Workshop Work- How to Give Feedback
Tumblr media
A while back, I wrote a post here about the sense of community we share in this little slice of internet we’ve carved out for ourselves. And then @abelzumi wrote another one more recently. In my post, I touched a little bit on how to give effective feedback, but it’s been long enough that I want to take the chance to expand on some of the things I said there, and add new ones.
In the fair-workshop channel of our discord server, people have the chance to gather and share their designs, and receive feedback on them before submitting to the fair. Which is great! It creates a sense of togetherness where you can help each other improve upon your ideas, and uplift and encourage each other to become better designers.
Funny enough, it shares a lot in common with creative writing workshops. A bunch of people bring to the table their own creative art, and offer it up for constructive feedback. Unfortunately, a lot of issues can arise in creative writing workshops, and similar issues can be found here as well. That’s why I wanted to talk about some general guidelines to give more effective feedback- and also how to receive it.
1. Assume good faith
This is the first one, and by far the biggest. It’s also the one I see the least often. Yes, it’s hard to interpret tone over text, and none of us really know each other, so it can be hard to tell where someone else is coming from. But... just assume they’re coming from a place of helpfulness, even if it might not seem like it. The chances of someone purposefully and maliciously attacking you or your design are incredibly slim, and it’s much more likely that it was simply a misguided attempt to offer helpful criticism. The best thing to do is assume it was an honest mistake rather than escalating.
2. Be mindful of the goal
What is the ultimate goal of giving feedback? In my interpretation, it is to offer the recipient information that will allow them to make the best possible version of the card they want to make. This seems obvious, but it’s easy to slip past it and offer feedback that turns the card into the one you would make. Instead of giving direct suggestions about what they should do, instead point out your reaction to the design, and some possible avenues they could explore. Keeping in mind what the creator wants from the design is the best way to make sure everyone walks away happy. And if you’re not sure what the creator’s intent is...
3. Ask questions
Feedback is not a one-way street! Ask the creator for clarification- “What’s your intent with this design? What parts are you willing to change, and what parts are non-negotiable? Where did you get X idea from?” Asking these questions can open a dialogue with the designer, and make sure you are helping them work towards a design they can be happy with. Without asking questions, you fall into the trap of #2, where the feedback you offer is simply what you would do if you were trying to make a card similar to theirs. While that sometimes works out, it’s a practice we want to avoid.
4. Don’t present opinion as fact
Look, none of us have a PHD in Magic-Ology. Including the Judges. That means that any feedback that is offered by any of us is simply an opinion. Unfortunately, I find a lot of people will present that opinion as fact, ie “This card shouldn’t do X”, instead of “I feel like this card doing X doesn’t make sense from my perspective.” The designer of the card has final say in what they do, and presenting your opinion as though it is an immutable truth that must be obeyed is a surefire way to create tension.
5. Be positive
There is ALWAYS something good to say about a card, and it’s usually a good idea to start and/or end with those positives so that the designer doesn’t feel like you’re just insulting their card (and by extension, them). If you are unable to find something positive to say about a design, then it might be best to avoid offering criticism as well.
6. Be specific
One of the most common reactions to a design I see is usually something along the lines of “This is broken.” And that’s... not helpful. To anyone. All it’s going to do is make the poster feel bad about their design, without offering any suggestions for how to fix it. Instead, maybe try “This is a cool design, but it might be too cheap for the mana cost”, or maybe “Looking at this card, how would you feel if your opponent played that against you?” Being specific as to what aspect of the card you’re referring to not only helps the designer understand the feedback better, it also helps them feel like you’re not ragging on their design as a whole- just one or two aspects of it.
7.  Arguments ≠ Discussion
It can be hard sometimes to offer up a design that you put your whole heart into, only for people to start pointing out its flaws. However, that is what you are agreeing to by posting your design in a channel designed to help you workshop it. If someone offers feedback that you don’t agree with, don’t argue with them or try to attack them. Just graciously accept the feedback, and then silently decide not to incorporate it into your design. If you feel someone is being needlessly malicious, then alert a judge or moderator rather than escalating the situation yourself. However, going all the way back to rule #1, try to assume the best of people- usually if you post a design and someone comments on it, they really are trying to be helpful, even if it comes off as abrasive or rude.
Anyways, I know this was a bit of a long read, but thanks for sticking around till the end. I really do love this community a whole bunch, and I want to see it prosper and grow. There’s obviously no such thing as a community that is 100% devoid of conflict, but we can get as close as possible. Y’all are the best.

APHRODITE MESSAGES 💌
Hi!
Let's dive into your messages from Aphrodite
Intuitively pick a pile 👇🏻 and check the corresponding message to it! & I hope you enjoy the reading
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PILE 1
1212, " I am sexy, I am divine", "affirm"
Y'all are fucking kings and queens and princesses. Just shut up, y'all pretty (inside out) asf.
PRIORITISE YOURSELF AND YOUR NEEDS.
Y'all be settling for bread crumbs and shit but stop! Like self worth where?
Stop hurting yourself for petty things/people and start to enjoy life. Celebrate yourself.
You could have a talent for natural healing powers so make use of it. The upright Queen of Pentacles can also signify someone involved in a nature religion such as a white witch. It can be an indication that you may have an interest in or a natural talent for Earth magic such as creating potions using herbs.
Connect with Aphrodite if you want to add more peace and calmness into your life. You might also have some (green flag) suitors that want to make you theirs.
" Confident " for some it is asking you to be more confident while for some it shows that you are confident in yourself & your abilities
Hope the reading helped. This is a general reading so Only take what resonates. bye see you next time!
PILE 2
"pours out their heart to us"
A change is coming your way.
What change you may ask,
You are now on the verge of releasing all that has been holding you back, you are now realising the value of something (your own worth, value of a person, time, effort, anything) and this is going to bring in a new flow of motion.
New love, new feelings or new passion could be anything but it's good!
You might be going through some tough times but you are very brave and standing high. And this new thing is your reward for trusting the universe. Keep slaying and working hard💪🏻
Hope the reading helped. This is a general reading so Only take what resonates. bye see you next time!
PILE 3
Y'all could be feeling tired, disturbed, pissed at everything (or something specific) we actually have very similar cards to pile two.
you have a new opportunity being presented to you rn / soon. this opportunity is brought to you by the divine itself. GRAB IT BITCH! this thing is important for you, it has a potential to grow and get big/ successful. depending on what the thing is it will show you its benefits/pros. it will likely bring you in contact with the right people/ your soulmates/ soul family.
how will you recognize it though? one sign could be your desire for wanting to go for it, you could be naturally talented too.
another message could be that you need to give out to people, help people, be a provider. this could be you providing guidance to people or money or hope/motivation, basically anything.
for some who have been thinking about sharing content online, this is your sign to do it! (and tag me/jkkkk)
Hope the reading helped. This is a general reading so Only take what resonates. bye see you next time!
PILE 4
Y'all seem confused and stuck? Like everything "looks" alright but doesn't intuitively feel right. You are unsure if it's you whose the problem or the other thing, something around those lines, yk?
not here to scare you but yall better be careful. Your intuition is on spot especially with that one thing/person.
If something/someone is giving you weird vibes and you can't figure out why then it's the universe trying to speak to you through your intuition. your intuition needs to be addressed, try to dig in deeper with "why" you've been feeling so.
Just be a Lil cautious, that's it ig.
Hope the reading helped. This is a general reading so Only take what resonates. bye see you next time!

A Semblance of Direction: How do we create that surprise?
Tumblr media
When discussing with the other judges this week, I was hard-pressed for a good example, as were we all. This is slightly more difficult than I anticipated, even though the concept feels like it can be simplified: have something in the art direction that’s not on the card. But to make it funny, surprising, a twist, recontextualized, etc., that barrier can feel difficult to scale.
So, here’s my art direction for a card example that I came up with. I’d like you to read it, then guess what the actual card is before clicking the readmore. Following that are some ideas that can hopefully guide you even more.
Art direction: Far in the misty hills, a statue of a monk in a horse stance has been overgrown by the forests, and we're seeing a moment of the clouds parting to let the diffused sunlight shine on this ancient, massive relic. In the foreground, a young child mimics the pose, with all the adolescent confidence she can muster. Following her is a djinn monk, scrolls laden across their back, looking up at the statue forlornly.
Mood: History, from two perspectives—mourning and hope.
Got it? Alright, here’s the card:
Tumblr media
Maybe what you expected, maybe not. But my process was pretty muddled even though I was happy with the result. The card came to my head first, and then afterwards, I thought about how to evoke the mood—or rather, how the different moods could be evoked.
Let’s rewind. Remember Unbounded Potential? I talked about that card specifically because it could have had two different moods. On the one hand, this hopeful side of things could be portrayed, but on the other, it could have been a Phyrexian card. We’ve been over that—and that’s how I made this example. The obvious possibility could have been a whirlwind of magic surrounding an Ojutai monk as they’re digging through scrolls and learning powerful spells. Taking that obvious mood, I chose to go a different route. Emotionally, the past icons and the future potential mastery are conflated, depicting possibility rather than action.
Does everything have to be that complicated? No, heck no. One small detail can make it all the better. And you don’t have to play to those expectations, either. If you’re an established MTG player, and you saw the card Harmless Offering without seeing the art, you could guess that the card’s art was actually depicting, perhaps, a cursed doll being given to a collector, or a goblin falling for a poorly-made booby trap designed to look like a sultry goblin bar wench. And that mindset is ultimately detrimental—because tropes are your friend. Understanding tropes can help you subvert them.
Perhaps, try this: Design your card normally, and think about what a player might expect from the art. Then ask: what other angle could there be? What would be an image that fits this card that runs against expectation? What action is being depicted, and what action COULD be depicted?
I actually want to talk about Innistrad’s Ancient Grudge for the umpteenth time. Imagine that the flavor text had ended with: “If there’s anything a werewolf hates, it’s a collar.” But, the wolf isn’t wearing a collar—they’re destroying Avacyn’s symbol. That card could have depicted the literal collar being torn off, but the choice was to turn the symbol into perhaps a metaphorical collar. Could there be metaphors or images that you can turn into art? Take your card as it stands. What’s the non-literal meaning of your text? And how does that change the mood?
If there was one piece of advice I could give, it would be: take what would be obvious, and make it more abstract. Maybe it’s funny! Maybe it’s darker. Maybe it’s metaphorical. Maybe you can depict something abstract, like World-Weary. After all, your goal is to create a feeling. Bring something beautiful, shocking, hilarious, strange.
So, why is this important?
My ultimate goal is to challenge you to think outside the box. Consider that the worlds of Magic are complex and strange, just like the real world. Adding non-linear, abstract, or twisted imagery creates both complexity and depth. These dimensions are what make sets come alive. Players who have that deep connection can more fully integrate themselves into your universe, whatever that may be.
Thank you for reading. We’re glad to have you in this universe. - @abelzumi

special thanks to these pez dispensers for accompanying me during my stay at the hospital. glory to canada
#theodore tugboat#theotug foduck#theotug george#theotug emily#stanza halifax#<--- don't expect this to be a big AU in this blog because TUGS is the main focus regarding boats. I just wanna draw gijinkas#senjart#sorry for not answering the asks guys. I got admitted into a hospital since tuesday and just got released yesterday (laugh track)#anyways about the show. theodore tugboat am I right#like I've said before it doesn't hit me as hard as thomas or TUGS#like it's not as character heavy as ttte#or as worldbuilding heavy as TUGS#but it's like.... a really fun relaxing show. super good even#I'd usually roll my eyes at overly nice protagonists but theodore is an exception. he is my friend. my pal#maybe it's just my affinity for shows with talking vehicles but erm.... robert cardonna you've done it again#the show doesn't have big explosions or bombastic events unfolding#the episodes have this very quiet and soft narration by danny doherty. no loud sounds or weird wacky silly sound effects in a bwba fashion#also everyone is nice to each other in this show which surprised me lol#because I've grown accustomed to the british-style verbal battles between sudrian engines#and the typical blink-and-you-miss-it dark comedy quips from top hat and zorran#theodore tugboat: what a peaceful day at halifax :) we talked about our problems properly and learned more about the world#TUGS: what a peaceful day at vaguely san francisco :) only 2 trampers died instead of the usual 5#I recommend it if you want a show that's easy to digest and easy on the eyes/brain#some episodes have characters that should've been switched to make it make sense#like harbour fools or even bumper buddies#I eventually got used to it#and there's not much worldbuilding going on. not my hugest complaint since it's still a cute show#there are also a few inconsistencies here and there... not to mention the episode order that kind of confused me#the side characters haven't grown much on me but I guess it just doesn't hit me YET#it's still good. I'll give it an 8/10

Joining the Family
Tumblr media
I mentioned in the contest post that this week’s contest is a little tough. Designing a common is harder than it looks, because you need to keep the card simple enough to understand at a glance but unique enough to not be redundant in the set. Designing three color cards is also kind of tough, since you want to at least try and make sure all three colors are represented in some way. Doing both at the same time might just feel impossible. But I’d like to break down your options a bit. Here’s some different ways to make 3-color cards simple.
A 3 color card
Might as well start with the obvious one. You can just make a card that costs three colors. In Alara there were a few of these, for example Waveskimmer Aven. If the card itself is simple, then there’s not much of a problem. It’s very rare for cards like these to need to be 3color, but they should at least feel 3 color. A creature with trample and vigilance could be mono-green, for example, but trample feels very red and vigilance very white, so you can make it 3 color. One big issue this can have, though, is that getting all three colors is kind of tough, which is why we don’t see cards like this all that often. You can maybe offset this by have a very high cost, like 6 mana, so by the time it comes out you’d hopefully have found your mana. But there’s other options, too.
Alternate costs / in-hand abilities
Basically all of the three-color sets we’ve seen do this. Alara had cycling, Khans had morph, and SNC had... whatever you call that weird 2 mana fixing effect on cards like Spara’s Adjudicators. This has all of the benefits of the above, but also gives players something to do if they don’t hit their colors. In the case of morph and the SNC cycle, you also still can get the full card’s effects later on. When making a card like this, try and think about what situation players would be in when they need to use this cost. A cycling cost that still requires all colors isn’t that much of an alternate cost, and one where the cost is higher than the card itself would only be useful if you’re really behind, which might not be great. Also, make sure that the effects still need the right colors of mana! If the ability has an effect, then it has to cost the right color/s of mana.
Hybrid mana
Everyone loves hyrbrid mana. Famously Alara had the blade cycle, which required one of one color and one of two other possible colors. In SNC, we had (at rare) the cycle of cards that could cost three colors, one color, or a combination between, like Jinnie Fay. While I love that concept, it’s probably too much for common, unless maybe the card itself is very simple. Possibly the most difficult part about designing hybrid is remembering that they aren’t actually both colors. They are either color. For example, Jinnie Fay has to be design in such a way that it doesn’t do anything green can’t do on its own. The other colors are more like suggestions. If you’re doing something like the blade cycles, then you need to think about every possible way to cast it and see if any of those combinations break the color pie.
Colors in the abilities
I purposely phrased this contest to allow cards that are three colors in identity not in color. That means that cards that are monocolor or colorless but have the remaining colors in their text box somewhere. Way back even in planescape they had cards like this in the battlemages that they brought back again for Alara. There’s a lot of different directions to go with this. You can check what mana the card was cast with, you can provide abilities that require colors to activate, you can even let it add mana of other colors. My biggest warning when making cards like this is to think about how optional their abilities are. If you have a creature that has powerful abilities when cast with other colors, then when you’re color screwed and it’s a vanilla 2/2 for 4, is it worth even letting a player play it like that? Giving a player a reward for going 3 color is great, but make sure that the baseline isn’t so bad that it effectively can’t be played without it.
~
There’s the ones I could think of off the top of my head and over the course of coming up with this contest. If you think I missed one, feel free to design it and submit it, I’m looking forward to it! The submission box is located >>HERE<<.
