Trans Horror Authors
My January reading challenge is to read a book by a trans author. Luckily, there are many out there to choose from! Here are some who write in the horror genre, because that's my area of expertise. If you know of others, whether in horror or other genres, reply with your recommendations!
In no particular order...
Caitlin R. Kiernan
A genderfluid Irish-American paleontologist who also writes spectacular cosmic horror, what's not to love? They've been repping queerness since the 80s and have a robust library to choose from, so you're bound to find something you'll like!
Poppy Z. Brite
Billy Martin, whose work is published under the name Poppy Z. Brite, was a big name in the Gothic horror scene of the 1990s and continues to be a frequently-recommended author, although he doesn't publish as much horror these days.
Julya Oui
A Malaysian trans woman and prolific short story author. She has several collections out that you can browse, if short stories are your speed! Maybe start with Taiping Tales of Terror, which draws heavily on her native folklore and influences.
Rivers Solomon
A nonbinary, intersex Black author now living in the U.K., Solomon has three books out and they all look spectacular. Their books lean more toward sci-fi/fantasy, but their newest title Sorrowland looks to be pretty solidly Gothic as well.
Gretchen Felker-Martin
Trans woman, film critic, and unapologetically outspoken. Her best-known book is Manhunt, a post-apocalyptic horror tale that doesn't pull any punches. She's got another new release slated for 2024 to keep an eye on.
Hailey Piper
One of the most prolific authors I can name off the top of my head, Hailey also has several novellas out in the world + a few novels. If the intersection of queer fiction, body horror, and cosmic horror sounds like your thing, you can find something in her backlist. Also she's here on tumblr, go learn more at @haileypiperfights
Eve Harms
A bit of a new player on the field, but well worth checking out. Eve is a Jewish trans woman. Her debut novel, Transmuted, is a breathless body horror romp. She also makes a bunch of handmade zines, which I just think are neat :)
Natalie Ironside
One of Tumblr's very own better-known names, Natalie is queer, disabled, trans, hilarious, and author to at least three novels I can think of plus some other stuff too - go scope her out on @natalieironside for the details.
.....I know I'm missing a ton of people but these were the first ones that came to mind. I have to get back to writing, but I hope this inspires y'all to pick up a book you haven't read yet, and to add to my list down in the notes.
Happy reading, y'all :)

As you might expect from a couple of queer indie authors, Fell & I are going hard on the sales and promotions for Pride Month! I'll try to summarize as succinctly as possible, and remember that you can always click the links for a full synopsis ;)

✨ A short and sweet sapphic contemporary fantasy read? My novella Worm in a Jar is pay what you want on Gumroad all month, so you can download it free if you'd like!
✨ A not-romantic fantasy novel with queer trans protagonists, about a demon and a demon hunter who must team up to prevent an imprending wave of violence? Our upcoming collab, Hierarchy of the Unseen, comes out June 21! It's up for preorder now, and available as an ARC on Netgalley :)
✨ The above, and also deals and/or supporting queer trans authors? This month, we're running a special offer on Patreon: all new & current patrons starting at the $4 tier will receive a free paperback of HotU (in addition to the ebook downloads, early access to our work, behind-the-scenes exclusives, and more already offered to patrons)!

This is ur local skimbly telling you that if you're comfortable reading academic style writing, you should really really really pick up Dr. Jules Gill-Peterson's 2018 book Histories of the Transgender Child. She explores the history of trans youth in the US through the 20th century, with open acknowledgement of both intersex medicalization and the racialization of pathology in terms of both intersexuality and the trans experience, and is openly critical of our medical framework of identity, with the historical reasoning to back this up.
From her site:
Histories of the Transgender Child is the first book of its kind, uncovering a century of the hidden history of transgender children. Shattering the widespread myth that today's transgender children are a brand new generation, Jules Gill-Peterson shows how modern transgender medicine, as well as the very concept of gender itself, depend upon the often invisible medicalization of trans and intersex children's presumed biological plasticity.
Through a trans of color critique of medicine and its archive, Histories of the Transgender Child shows how the medical model built in a racial divide through plasticity, by design disqualifying black and trans of color children from access to care and support, setting the strict gatekeeping boundaries of the medical field that have harmed trans people for decades. The histories of trans children Gill-Peterson has brought to light open up an array of possibilities for reimagining today’s clinic by learning to listen to what trans children know about themselves, grounding medical care in the recognition of their selfhood, and critiquing binary models of transition and dysphoria.

Seeking beta readers for a queer fantasy romance novel
Tumblr media
Fell A. Marsh's Taker of the Third Path follows Linmiru, a hedgewitch led by his god to an abandoned inn at an ancient crossroads. His task there is to meet the next person to take the overgrown "third path."
Months pass, and a growing connection with one of the inn's guests leads Lin to question his devotion to destiny—but the fate of the world rests on his prophesied meeting with the taker. And when the day finally comes, Linmiru must confront the reality that nothing at the old crossroads has been as it seemed.
If you're into character-driven fantasy, romance that explores darker, heavier themes, queer and trans characters, and some unique and vibrant world building, you'll probably love this book as much as I do!!
No experience required—the goal here is to get authentic feedback from real readers. All you need to apply for a free copy is a love of fantasy and/or queer romance and the willingness to give your honest opinion! The beta reading period begins later this month, so get in while signups are still open!

sometimes it does make me sad that cis allies sometimes feel like they cant write about trans characters because they think they'll fuck it up or not present it well enough- because i get not wanting to offend anyone, but you can just educate yourself on the topic and get input on how to write about a trans person from trans people
trust me it helps to normalize this kind of thing, don't go into writing or presenting a character who is transgender without throughly educating yourself on the topic and how to make good representation, but dont be scared of writing about someone who is different than you just because its something unfamiliar to you. MAKE it familiar to you, ASK trans people about representation, TALK to trans people about their experiences, READ stories about trans character written by trans authors- theres so many different ways to do so and go about it, BE OPEN TO FEEDBACK!!!
being trans will not become something "of the norm" if its only trans people writing about it

just finished poppy z. brite's "exquisite corpse" and it absolutely wrecked me. was especially really, eerily compelled by the abusive and tense relationship between luke and tran.
they are both such fascinating and honest characters. i've met them, i've known them, i've loved them, i've been them. so i had to sketch them out.
i really loved the book but it is incredibly graphic and is probably the most objectively vile thing i've ever read. it's a book about two gay serial killers, the runaway who gets caught up with them, and his abusive ex-bf-turned-abrassive-niche-radio-host.
but, it is also such an honest and compelling exploration of queer relationships, of desire, of mortality, and of the social impact of HIV/AIDs. also the prose is bone-chilling, beautiful, and gruesome while still feeling very down-to-earth and real.

If you liked the All Our Hidden Gifts trilogy by Caroline O’Donoghue, try The Scapegracers series by HA Clarke
They both include:
covens of teenage witches, some of whom are queer
said covens using their magic to take down the patriarchy
quirky little shops where they get help with their magic
