had a trainwreck of an in person consult for my sleeve tattoo yesterday only made better by the itty bitty yorkie shop dog adoring me and sitting on my lap the whole time.
#also chatting with my partner after ofc i felt so much better tysm chris ♥#but yeah it was not great#it was supposed to be on friday#but she changed it last minute saying she was too busy can we do it the next day at 5 instead? yeah fine#kinda disappointing she didn't tell me in time to like do smth with friends i was invited to but had to opt out of bc of the consult#but whatever#get there early text her that i'm there. stand out side. in the rain. for 15 minutes. she didn't see the text. she didn't see me outside.#in fact.. she was in the middle of tattooing somebody. the client noticed me after 15 minutes and finally let her know.#she comes over all suspicious like. cracks the door and asks 'who are you?what do you want'#even after i say i have a consultation at 5 she didn't remember it was HER who had the consult. i had to rattle off all the details for her#to finally remember it was HER consult and say 'oh i completely forgot about that'#finally get let in and sit down and. she then spends the next couple minutes profusely apologizing to the other client. saying like#'ohhh im so sorry i completely forgot i had a consult scheduled.... i'll get this over with quick' which. well. :(#finally start going through it. she doesn't remember anything about the tattoo. not that it was a sleeve. not what elements were in it. :(#i wasn't expecting a sketch or anything but. even just having re-read the emails before the consult would have... been nice....#after she does that she says 'oh we didn't really need an in person consultation' which is also. :( because she suggested it.#i get a whole like 5 minutes to rehash stuff we already went over in emails including her not remembering i'd put down a deposit AND we had#3 sessions scheduled already.... and it needs another 2 sessions which i wish she'd told me about because she's booked so far out my last#session might not be until. may.#i didn't even get to ask any questions! i wanted to ask! like does she use saniderm? (i can't have that on my skin)#does she want other things for a tip than just cash? (absolutely not offering that now) has she dealt with KP before? are there any things#she wants me to bring to the sessions? (they're gonna be long)#and then i'm rushed out the door and sitting in my car in the rain and just absolutely fucking crushed#and feeling bad that i feel so bad because like. is it entitled of me to think that like.#maybe if u have a client paying u thousands of dollars to design & tattoo their sleeve tattoos.... you'd like.... treat them like a client#i was so excited about my sleeve i was so fucking psyched and now im. not. at all.#i'm worried about what if she forgets about my appts? what if she books over my appts like she already did with just my consult?#and i'm left hanging trying to get things scheduled in so so so so late like i'm some second rate flaky walk in....#i guess it could have gone worse

Don't worry, your argument seems very logical! I would most likely tend to your b) option as well.
It does not quite fit the topic, but it was also interesting how Five let Lila touch him in S3 despite of their conflicts, like the dancing/drinking scenes, or the visit at the commission. Five seems just so touch starved from all the years in the apocalypse, not only in a sexual way of course, but also in spending time with other human beings again and bonding with them. That's why I also like reading fics where he finally gets some love and affection. (Y/N the person you are, lol.)
The bathroom scene made me sick to my stomach 💀 I don't know why the writers pushed that creepy behavior of her that much, as a viewer it makes one so uncomfortable. I kind of feel bad for the actress, but she did a good job as a villain, though.
Oh, I didn't thought it might took Dolores years that she eventually talks back to him, but it makes sense.
Thank you!
I like that Lila is the first person Five lets in that way. They're very evenly matched and understand each other on a level the others don't really. They have great chemistry and if anyone was going to break down his conceit, it would be her. Don't get me wrong, I think him being drunk for most of it certainly helped, but Lila was the first person to just say: "hold my hand", and I think that's what he needs.
Honestly, from what I've read (though take this with a pinch of salt as I don't have complete sources), I think The Handler was originally intended to be a man, but once they ended up casting Kate Walsh and saw the creepy vibe she brought to the role, they leaned into it and adapted scripts for season 2 accordingly, so if this is true, the direction of the bathroom scene was probably guided somewhat by Kate Walsh herself in consultation with the director and probably Aidan Gallagher. I think the bathroom scene is definitely creepy, but you've got to remember that the Handler knew he wasn't actually using the bathroom, he was trying to read the fake file. I'm less creeped out by that than I am by the little touches and body language. She does such a stellar job and looks fucking amazing throughout. I kinda can't help but stan, as much as she terrifies me.
I actually forgot one piece of evidence for the Handler and Five having had a relationship: she tells Diego that she and Five have a 'colourful history' which could definitely imply more than the history we know about.

One Dance (Last Part) || Doctor Strange x Fem!reader.
Tumblr media
Word count: 7.6K WARNINGS: None? A/N: To all the people who's read part 1 and 2, thank you so much. I enjoyed reading your comments, I really appreciate the each and everyone of you. I really had a hard time writing this one. I tend to ovethink the character's emotions, making sure it's accurate and realistic, I lost a bit of sleep on this one. So many ideas just came in my head, which might resort to me writing one-shots.
PART I // PART II ***Strictly do not: claim, repost, copy, translate my stories anywhere else*** @poor-unfortunate-soul-85 @elicheel @vintageroses10 @sillyfreakfanparty @sherlux @padmesgreene @brucewaynescock @peachyrogerss @wow-life-love4 @geeky-politics-46 @hueanhdang @graniairish
"Um, excuse me? I'm looking for (Y/N, L/N)?" A young part-timer in a baseball cap asked the receptionist, a medium-sized assorted flower box in hand. It was filled with preserved white hydrangeas, lavender baby's breath and pastel pink roses. The other nurses and doctors turned their heads to look for you, it was probably the hundredth time someone's sent you flower boxes and other people are starting to get curious about the secret admirer behind it.
"Again? Give that to me. She's doing open heart surgery right now, I'll pass it on to her after."  Juliet, your best friend and the cardiac ward's nurse unit manager, reached for the box, being careful with it.
"Oh uh, and this too." The kid sets an envelope sealed with wax and slides it across towards your friend then left without saying another word.
Juliet's brows arched, feeling that that was weird. She took the envelope as well and went to the women's changing room where your locker is and left it on top of yours.
•••
You stood beside Dr. Blake, one of the main consultants in cardiology. You were performing this surgery under his supervision and he wasn't surprised when you needed no prompting about the delicate procedure of the coronary bypass.
The first three months were tough but after your emotions had settled, you wasted no time sticking your nose into research and books that you've put those feelings under the carpet, making yourself believe that you're finally free from the grief of losing your relationship with Stephen. And because you focused on your work, you’ve excelled in your profession at an alarming rate, very noticeable amongst your peers.
"(Y/N)!" Dr. Blake found you and ran to catch up, you turned around to see the man jogging towards you. You began walking again after he caught up, "So, do I have an answer yet?" He asked.
You raised your brows, looking up at the taller figure beside you, unsure of what he meant by that, "Answer to what exactly?"
"The New Year's Eve ball at The Peninsula Hotel?" He reminded you with a sheepish smile. Don was roughly the same age as you, a brilliant doctor like Strange was but minus the ego and arrogance.
Your eyes lit up as soon as you remembered, "Oh right! I'm sorry I completely forgot about that… I don't know, Don." You gave him an apologetic smile, "I agreed to work on one of the intern's research papers–"
Don clicked his tongue and stood in front of you, "(Y/N), it's only for one night, it won't hurt to come. Plus, I reckon your intern will go out partying and you'll be at home doing their work? Sounds unfair to me." He squints his eyes, tapping his chin playfully.
'Could Dr. Blake please come to Cath four please. Dr. Blake please come to Cath four.' The PA announced through the speakers.
"Think about it, you have one day left." He began to walk backwards pointing at you before running away to where he was needed.
You sighed and headed towards the women's locker. You fished your phone out of your pockets to find a text from Juliet, it said: 'Hey Miss Popular, I left yet another beautiful box of flowers over your locker, and a letter. If you're in the mood to spill some tea then I'm in my office. xo.'
You hurriedly enter the locker room to find the flowers there, as well as the letter. Whoever was sending you those were really persistent, you opened the letter carefully, not wanting to ruin the beautiful seal, you pulled the letter out and there was a message in the middle of the textured paper.
'At new year's eve, meet me at the rooftop of the Peninsula, 11.30pm sharp. No excuses.'
You chuckled to yourself, knowing full well about the identity of this person.
•••
You slapped the letter down on Juliet's desk before sitting down, looking at you surprised, "It's Dr. Blake."
Juliet's eyes flickered between you and the letter, eyes widening and snatching the letter to read it, "Meet me at the rooftop of the Peninsula, 11.30pm sharp. No excuses." Juliet gasped in excitement, "Oh my god! But how do you know?"
"He's been pestering me to be his date at the new year's eve party, even just a few minutes ago. Ugh." You combed your hair back with your hands before burying your face in the crook of your elbow, shaking your head at Juliet who had her lips pressed as if trying to prevent a squeal.
"(Y/N), you can’t stand him up, not when he made all of this effort. It boggles my mind how blind you are to his signs." She leaned back and crossed her arms.
"He's been giving me hints? I honestly can't tell, he's so nice to everyone. I can't tell the difference." You shrugged.
"Ugh… Jesus help me. Okay, first of all, his body completely turns to face yours when talking, two, he always drops what he's doing every time you need help and three, whenever you approach him and his friends, they leave, it's like they're giving you some alone time." Juliet said, almost growling, trying to get it through your dense head.
"And you know all of this because?"
"I'm very observant, love, there’s not a thing I don't know about what's going on in my ward." Juliet leaned in, narrowing her eyes at you, "So are you going?"
"Okay fine, only if you are!" You took the letter back and Juliet pulled a smile of success.
"Me? Miss out on one of the biggest parties in New York? Are you really my best friend (Y/N)?" Juliet blew a raspberry and waved her hands dismissively.
•••
The elevator doors slid open into the basement parking lot, the place was full since it's now the morning of the thirtieth. You just couldn't wait to go home and sleep, you've had two long operations and your body is knackered. You carried the flower box with one arm as you approached your car. Turning your head cautiously because of the random noises that echoed in the quiet space. You picked up your pace and unlocked your SUV, carefully placing the flowers on the backseat of your car.
You turned towards the driver's seat, then noticed a piece of paper that was pinned under the wipers of your car:
Of all the things  I can do on this earth, I just want to build a bridge from my heart to yours.
You read the note, looking around suspiciously before crumpling the paper and shoving it in your pocket. A lot of weird things have been happening to you lately, this one included. It feels like everytime you say you needed or wished for something, it coincidentally happens.
One time you were studying in the library, and quietly told yourself that you needed coffee when out of nowhere, a group of volunteers started giving free coffee for everyone. 'Take it easy.' Was written on the cup, as if reminding you to take a break from being stuck in a book.
The next one was when your car broke down and you had no choice but to catch the train instead. Something urgent came up at work and they needed you asap, you were running to catch the train, its doors almost closing when suddenly the electricity malfunctioned for a few seconds causing the train doors to reopen, giving you time to hop on, preventing you from being late.
The most memorable one was probably when you were out on a jog, feeling at your lowest after failing to save a patient, blaming yourself even if it wasn’t your fault. You were catching your breath, on the verge of a breakdown when a stranger came up to you and gave you a single flower, which was coincidentally your favourite one. She gave you a piece of advice, "Some things are out of your control." She said, giving you a comforting pat on the shoulder before walking away. A beautiful emperor butterfly landing on your flower shortly after.
You sat in your car in deep thought about the weird coincidences, "I just need sleep." You pinched the bridge of your nose, "This is nothing." You started the ignition and drove slowly out of the car park. The radio transitioned from white noise to clear audio as you exit the parking lot. Your phone failed to connect to your car again, leaving you no choice but to listen to what the radio has to offer.
'Cause after all this time, I'm still into you. I should be over all the butterfl–' You flicked the button on the wheel to change the station, you avoided listening to love songs because everytime, your mind lands back to Stephen and for the last eight months of putting your feelings aside and distracting yourself with work, you weren’t really a thousand percent over him– even though that's what you've been telling you friends.
'But if I let you go, I will never know what my life would be holding you close to me–' Flick.
'So tell me what I'm to do whenever, I'm missin' you? Tell me, do you love me? I, I–' Flick.
'Maybe it's intuition, but some things you just don't question, like in your eyes, I see my future in an instant–' Flick.
'So why does your pride make you run and hide? Are you that afraid of me? But I know it's a lie, what you keep inside, this is not how you want it to be.' You glared at the radio and slammed the off button, giving you serene silence. You released a heavy breath as you delicately stopped your car at the red light, feeling annoyed that the universe might be teasing you.
A convertible pulled up beside you, a middle aged man singing his heart away as music blasted from his speakers,"Although we've come… to the end of the road, still I can't let go, It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you!"
"Ugh." You rolled your eyes and banged your head on the steering wheel.
•••
You tossed and turned in your bed, trying to find a comfortable position, but still you couldn’t fall asleep. You turned to your side again, opening your eyes this time. In the corner of your room, you noticed the box full of Stephen’s belongings that you didn’t have the guts to return, scared that you might come back to square one if you see him up close.
You remembered standing at the landing of The Sanctum for who knows how long, carrying a box full of Stephen’s belongings. You could hear and feel your heart pounding in your chest and felt nauseous, trying to find the courage to walk up and knock at the door, but instead you left carrying the things back with you and now you’re wondering why you didn’t just leave it. Maybe because at that time, you wanted him to have a reason to come back to see you and fight for you, take you back. You had it all planned out in your head.
You came to a conclusion that he was probably mad at you that he didn’t find the need to take his things back, but you kept it anyway just in case and now here you are, eight months post parting ways and it’s still here. No calls, texts, no signs of taking it back. You thought to yourself that it was probably time, time to close the door and open a new one. Your new year’s resolution will be to throw his things away and truly free yourself.
Your hands slid under your pillow and grabbed your phone to text Don.
To: Dr. Blake Hey, just letting you know, I’d like to attend the new year’s party with you.
It hasn’t been a minute since you sent the text, and you already got a reply from the man.
From: Dr. Blake Really?! Oh I mean, awesome. I’ll pick you up at 8pm.  Wait. Why aren’t you sleeping after a night shift? Don’t reply and go to bed.
You giggled at his texts and left him on seen. You swiped back, scrolled all the way down your messages to find yours and Stephens, your thumb hovered over his name and deleted your messages and before you knew it, you fell into the rabbit hole of deleting everything that had Stephen in it.
•••
Stephen stood in front of the mirror, tying his tie without the use of magic this time, hair neatly styled with his signature grey streaks pulled to the side. It was New Year’s Eve, he and Wong had been invited by the Mayor to attend this year’s party after defeating Gargantos six months ago and America, being his sneaky side-kick, found that you were in the guest list.
Tonight is also the night that Stephen would walk himself back into your life, formally. It’s been him all along behind the scenes, making sure you had a great day. At night when you don't have a car to use, and you walk home alone in the dark, he stays close by to make sure you get home safe. He secretly buys you coffee when you’re at your favourite cafe trying to catch up on sleep during your break time. He was behind those reminders to take it easy on yourself whenever you studied, because he knew how taxing your profession can be. All of the things he took away from you such as security, making you feel special, wanted, he wanted to give back.
The day where you were contemplating whether to give his belongings back, he actually saw you from the window. He watched as you got folded by your uncertainty and walked away with the box still in your arms. He could’ve called you, yes, but he also wanted to give himself some time and make sure that his feelings for you were genuine. Hurting you twice was the last thing he wanted to do. If he was going to walk right back into your life, he wanted to offer himself to you fully, that is… if you still wanted him back.
Suddenly he heard a soft knock on the door, “Hi Stephen, it’s me.” America’s little voice said from the other side.
“Come in.” Stephen replied and turned around just as America entered his room, “How do I look?”
“You look really great! It’s weird seeing you and Wong all dressed up,” She laughed sheepishly and gave the man two thumbs up, “How are you feeling?”
Stephen paused to think of an answer, “Terrified.” He said nonchalantly. Outwardly, he showed confidence, unfazed by anything that may come his way but inside he felt like his own chest was going to collapse on him.
“You don’t look like it.” America furrowed her brows, “Anyway, I just came to tell you to break some legs!”
Stephen snorted while adjusting the cuffs of his sleeve, “Do you mean, break a leg?”
“You know what I mean!” America left his room complaining about the weird metaphor, her voice getting smaller as she got farther away, “Honestly, I don’t understand why you’d wish someone would break their legs… what if they actually break their legs?” Stephen shook his head and laughed at the kid whom he’s grown very fond of over the last few months.
•••
Back in your apartment, you also stood in front of your vanity in a black velvety manhattan slip dress that hugged your curves so beautifully. Your hair done up in a bun with curled loose hair falling at the side of your face. You decided to go for a natural make-up look to accentuate your red lips that matched well with your all black outfit.
Your doorbell rang and you walked towards your security cam, seeing Don on the other side. You opened up the door, plastering a smile on your lips as you greeted him with a cheek to cheek kiss, “Hi! Oh my god wow, don’t you look handsome.” You grinned and stepped aside to let him in, “Make yourself comfortable, I’ll be with you in a few minutes.”
“Thank you.” His eyes running over your figure from head to toe, “And you look good in that dress.” He complimented you as he walked towards your couch, observing his surroundings since it was his first time being there.
You ran in your bedroom to grab your purse, phone and wool coat, “Let’s go!”
You didn’t expect the car ride to be so awfully awkward. He would start a conversation and it would end abruptly, then you would start one and that ended abruptly as well. The music didn’t even help ease the awkwardness, you could tell he was feeling the same since his forefinger was tapping the steering wheel. Fortunately it didn’t take long until you arrived at the Hotel, Don asked you to stay put as he went around the car to open the door for you, offering his hand which you gladly took while he helped you to step out of his car.
He handed over his car keys to the valet and approached the staff accepting invitations from guests, “Invitations please.” She politely asked.
Don pulled his invitation from the inner pocket of his blazer, while you took your out of your purse, “Dr. Blake and Dr. (L/N)! Welcome, please head towards the elevator, the party is on the 25th floor. Enjoy your night.” She returned the invitations to the both of you.
Don offered you his arm before walking in, “Shall we?”
“We shall.” You laughed softly, and locked your arm around his, as you headed together for the elevator “So, What’s going to be your New Year’s resolution?” You whispered in the elevator filled with other guests.
“Hm, I think I’d like to focus on other things that aren't related to work.” He whispered back, slightly leaning his head towards you with a small smile on his lips. The elevator arrived at the floor, the music from the band could be heard from the hallway playing classical music. Don allowed you to step out first before you linked arms with him again, “What about you (Y/N)? What’s your New Year’s resolution?”
You took a deep breath as you began to speak, “I thought about finally opening a new chapter in my life.” You pulled a half-smile and dropped your gaze.
You walked through the tall entrance leading to the ballroom, the lights were warm and dimmed, purposely giving a romantic ambiance. You scanned the vast room from the top of the staircase and saw people mingling, some dancing to the music. Your eyes caught the familiar face of your friends sitting at a round table, your eyes lighting up when you saw Juliet waving at you enthusiastically.
You looked exceptionally beautiful tonight and turned a few heads as you walked past other guests. When you reached the table where the others were, Don pulled a chair out for you, thanking him as you took a seat, “Good evening guys.”
“Wow (Y/N), wow. You look so stunning I might cry.” Juliet wiped a fake tear.
“Oh speak for yourself Juliet, you look like a model.” You returned the compliment.
There were a few important people in the room and Don excused himself, “I’m just going to say hi to the hospital’s director, I’ll be back.” He squeezed your shoulder before approaching the circle of men chatting with each other.
“Sure.” You gave him a tight-lipped smile before turning your attention back to Juliet. The girls waited for the man to be far enough that he won’t hear your conversation.
“Sooo, are you going to tell us about the car ride on the way here?” Bea wiggled her brows at you teasingly.
“Please, don’t get me started. It was really awkward.” You hid your face in your hand, “We only had small talk, and that’s it.”
“That’s normal, I mean it’s your first time seeing each other outside of work and in a confined space.” Juliet warmly reassured you, glancing at your date from time to time, just like the other girls.
“Oh my god, look, he won’t stop looking in your direction, I say he’s smitten,” Rosie softly tapped the back of your hand. You lifted your gaze and met Don’s eyes, he smiled at you from where he is and you returned one to him.
“I can’t take this romance, I’m going to need a mega pint of wine.” Juliet jokingly cringed at the exchange of looks that was happening before her.
“Get up and socialise then, you aren’t in your office Juliet, you can’t sit here all night.” You teased her back, the others laughing with you after teasing her to get out of her seat and approach a girl that matches her type.
“Holy shit. No way.” Bea almost dropped her jaw, you followed the direction she was looking at and found Stephen walking in and standing handsomely in his well-pressed suit and tie. He scanned the room while readjusting the cuffs of his sleeves. The world felt almost as if it went into slow motion the moment your eyes locked into his blue ones from afar, your smile twitched as you felt the centre of your chest ache. The nerve of him turning up like this after eight months and looking fine as hell. When a female approaches Stephen, you quickly look away and start another conversation with the ladies, forcing yourself to smile and look unbothered.
•••
Stephen entered the ballroom with Wong following not too long behind him. His eyes surveyed the room, looking for you until he found what he was looking for. His eyes dilated at the sight of you, amongst other beautiful women in the room, you shined the brightest. He almost felt annoyed when someone took his attention away from you.
He caught you stealing glances at him as we walked down the stairs, chatting with another woman. The urge to walk over to you and drag you away to somewhere private was so strong, but he needed to find the right timing for that.
Once the majority of the guests had arrived, the programme began and dinner was being served, you were left with Don beside you as the girls left for their designated seats with their own dates. There were speeches and funny stories from the mayor and sponsors, “In this New Year coming, let’s live life to the fullest.” The Mayor ended his speech and raised his glass of champagne, “Cheers.”
“Cheers!” The crowd, including you replied, glasses clinking with one another. You cautiously looked around, it's as if your eyes moved on their own looking for Strange whether you liked it or not. And then there he was, seated at the front, drinking a glass of martini still looking at you with those annoying blue eyes.
The music began again, Don turned to you with a shy smile, “Care for a dance?”
“It’ll be a pleasure.” You gave him a sultry smile, taking his hand as he guided you towards the centre of the dance floor. You expected to dance under the slow music with your date however, the DJ changed the music into a party song as the band took a break.
“Alright, I’m ‘bout to fall asleep, let’s get some real partying started.” He shouted, hyping the crowd and began to play Low by Flo Rida. Don slowly turned his head towards you, clearly he didn’t expect this to happen either.
Don pulled a silly yet serious look on his face as he began dancing, using hip hop moves only an amateur would know how to do. He was clearly trying to make you laugh after picking up the drop in your mood, “Boots with the fur.” He sang and you threw your head back in laughter, covering your mouth with your hands as he made up silly dance moves in front of you.
•••
Stephen and Wong sat closer at the front where the special guests were. He wasn’t able to keep a conversation the whole night with other people since he was too busy keeping his eyes on you, waiting for the opportunity to catch your gaze once more, but as the night progressed, it never happened. He couldn’t even count how many dances he’s respectfully declined.
Stephen saw you on the dance floor, slow dancing with your date to ‘Lady in Red’, laughing along with whatever joke your date was telling you, “She looks so happy.” Wong, who was also watching, commented.
Stephen released an exasperated sigh, before taking a sip of his whiskey, his fiery eyes made it clear that he was jealous, “Yeah, she does.” He’s almost having second thoughts about approaching you.
Wong gave a look of concern towards his friend who was now in deep thought, “I’ve seen that look before. You’re contemplating.”
Stephen clenched his jaw and sighed once more, “I don’t think I can keep the promise I made to the other (Y/N).” He admitted, anxiously twirling his drink.
“I’ve been observing you the whole night Strange, there wasn’t a second where you took your attention away from her. Clearly you’ve found your happiness right there, are you just gonna let some other man take her away?” Wong asked, his tone serious yet soft, he didn’t want Strange to feel like he’s being lectured.
“And what if her happiness is the cost of mine? I don’t want to take that away from her.” Strange frustratedly replied.
Wong scoffed, “Then do the best you can to make her happy, show her that you’re worth her time. You can’t do that by sitting here and feeling sorry for yourself.” Stephen stopped swirling his drink and looked at Wong who shrugged at him, “Am I right or am I right?” Wong added.
Stephen drank the rest of his whiskey and stood up, straightening his jacket and walked towards you and Don with purpose. You saw Stephen heading for you and panic flashed all throughout your body. Stephen lightly tapped Don’s shoulder, causing the man to break away from you and face Stephen.
“Hi, Doctor Stephen Strange.” He introduced himself to Don and offered the other a handshake. Don’s eyes widened in surprise and took the man’s hand, firmly shaking it.
“Oh my goodness, It’s a pleasure to meet you Doctor Strange. Let me just say I love your work. I’m Donovan Blake.” Don smiled at Strange, clearly ecstatic to meet your ex.
Stephen glanced at you, “Thank you Doctor. How are you (Y/N)?” He asked you so casually that you felt the urge to slap him across the face.
“I’ve been well, thanks. And you Doctor?” You asked him back with a dead-pan expression. Don’s head turned between you and Stephen who was having a staring contest, noticing that there was tension present between the both of you.
“You two know each other?” Don asked innocently, looking at you this time.
“Yeah, old friends.” You quickly answered before something else comes out from Stephen's mouth. You could feel Stephen forming a smirk at how fast you were shutting him down.
“Mhm. Old friends.” Stephen agreed firmly, his eyes leaving you for Don, “I was actually about to ask if I could steal your date for one dance.”
Don opened his mouth to say ‘Of course’ but you cut him off, “I would rather have a drink-” You faked a smile towards Stephen, tugging your date on the sleeve to leave when you noticed Don giving you a confused look, “I mean, I don’t want Don to feel-”
“(Y/N), it’s okay. I don’t mind.” Don chuckled, “I’ll see you at eleven-thirty.” He lifted your hand towards his lips and gave the back of your hand a soft kiss in front of Stephen, who looked away and waited for him to leave.
At the same time, the song you were dancing to with Don finished and the band played a new song, “Alright folks, for those of you who want to fall in love tonight, this song’s for you. This is called, ‘Until I Found You.’”
Georgia, wrap me up in all your, I want you in my arms, oh let me hold you~
“Can I just say, that dress you’re wearing is stunning on you.” Stephen took delicate steps closer towards you, his warm hands splaying across the skin of your bare back, whisking you towards him, closing the gap between your bodies.
I’ll never let you go again, like I did~
You quietly gasped, a heady flush spreading all over your body. Your arms reluctantly wrap around his neck, stubbornly avoiding to look at the face you've yearned to admire for a long time. You swallowed the lump forming in your throat, “Thank you… you don’t look bad yourself.”
Oh I used to say~
You hear Stephen chuckle, his cheek pressed at the side of your head, “I see that you’re still trying to humble me?” His deep, lovely voice sent a thrill down your spine.
I would never fall in love again until I found her.
“Is it working?” You scoffed and asked in a quiet voice, trying your best not to sound nervous.
“Not really.” Stephen replied, “Because I think I'm making you feel nervous.” The air was cold and yet you felt heat exploding from the pit of your stomach rising to your face as you felt his solid gaze towards you.
I said, "I would never fall unless it's you I fall into"
He guided you into a spin and when your body crashed back to him, he held you tighter than the last. A combination of his alluring scent, the weight of his gaze, and the nonexistent distance between you is so overwhelming that it almost makes you dizzy.
I was lost within the darkness, but then I found her, I found you~
You took a deep breath after what seemed like forever, giving yourself to gather your emotions before you answer him, you tilted your head up and you lifted your eyes to meet his and battled them, “I’m not nervous.” You denied, forgetting that he was so much taller compared to you.
Stephen studies your face, lips twitching and whispers, “I am,” He drops his gaze to your mouth leaning in close enough so when he spoke, his breath would caress your lips. Jesus Christ.
You snapped your head away from him, feeling self-conscious that your friends might see how close he got; your breath getting caught in your throat, feeling ashamed that they might judge you for dancing with your ex-boyfriend.
Your heart was racing when you felt his lips almost touching yours, “Are you messing with me right now?” You were doing everything in your power to look at him unimpressed, but the fact that you felt intoxicated by him, leaving you craving for more, was leaving you feeling miserable.
“Why would I do that?” He asked, “Do you really think I’m only dancing with you for my own entertainment?” He gently put his hand down your arm, and you felt goosebumps forming on your arms, as well as shivers rushing up your spine. Eventually, he ended up taking your hand, putting it over his heart, which was rapidly beating in the presence of you.
You searched for Don who was casually chatting with other guests, feeling relieved that he was occupied. You were spun around, leaving you with no choice but to concentrate on him and his words, "Don't look at him, look at me." He coax gently, his voice dangerously huskier than before, "Do you still think I'm messing with you?" He pressed your hands harder over his heart.
Lord have mercy on my soul. You felt the rhythm of his heart against your palm, almost beating in synchronicity with yours, “I can’t- You can’t do this to me. This is unfair, Stephen.” You unravel your arms around his neck, you softly push him away while shaking your head.
His hands fell from your back, your skin missing its warmth in an instant while your mind fell  into a spiral of confusion with your emotions as you weaved through the sea of people, leaving him alone on the dance floor.
You rushed to the ladies' bathroom where Juliet followed soon after, "(Y/N), are you okay?" She frantically asked as she barged in, catching you attempting to calm yourself.
Your eyes burned with vexation, "I hate him– I hate how he makes me feel this way, I hate the way he looks at me, I hate how my body reacts when he touches me, it's like all my senses are betraying me and he knows it!"
Juliet could only watch you empathetically, she approaches you by hugging your side, "You never stopped loving him, didn't you?" She popped the huge question.
You nodded as much as you hated to admit, "Gosh, I feel like a hypocrite. I left him because he couldn't get over his ex and here I am on the same boat as him. Can't get over my own ex." You laughed, in ridicule at your situation.
"You're not a hypocrite, need I remind you that you're not stepping on anyone else's feelings? Because you're not, you're just confused," She lightly shook you, "Do you want him back?" Your friend asked yet another huge question, a question you haven't prepared an answer for.
You threw your head back, preventing your angry tears from falling, "My new year's resolution was to completely let go, but then he decides to show his stupid face in that annoying suit. Why am I getting the urge to slap him across the face?"
Juliet gave a look, finding your anger quite cute, "Because you think he's hot," You glared at Juliet, "and I think he is as well, but I've never seen you get so worked up over another man. You can't deny that you're still into him. Just face it and talk to Stephen and if he says he's still hung up on his ex then tell him, bye bitch, I got plenty of people lined up for me."
•••
You found Don waiting for you at the empty rooftop bar, though the fairy lights all around were on, there was nobody there but the two of you. Don was sitting at one of the sun beds, you smiled at him as you quietly approached and sat beside him, leaving your wool coat beside you.
"So, half an hour until the New Year, how are you feeling?" He broke the silence.
"Nervous but I'm looking forward to what it has in-store for me," You paused, "So why are we really here Don?" You asked, not wanting to beat around the bush anymore.
He chuckled, "Wow straight to the point— Well, I just wanted to tell you that I've had such a pleasure working with you these past three months. You're an amazing Doctor and you continue to surprise us with your passion and talent and because of that, I might’ve caught some feelings for you along the way." He worked so hard to find the right words and not stutter as you listened to him intently.
"So this is what it's all about, all the flowers and chocolates–" You chuckled but Don gave you a confused look.
"What flowers?"
"The flower boxes? You've sent like heaps of them, with notes of encouragement?" You repeat yourself.
Don shook his head, "I didn't send you any flowers ye—" His phone rang in his pockets, "Sorry, I got to take this, it's the hospital." Don stood up to take the call.
"Yeah, sure." You replied in a low voice, trying to put things together, you played with your fingers as you got lost in your thoughts. Don glanced at you several times and took a few minutes on the phone before coming back with a disappointed look on his face.
“(Y/N), I have to go. There’s been an out of hospital cardiac arrest, can we do a rain check?” He asked, reaching for his jacket that hung on a chair and apologised. "I'm so sorry.”
“It’s alright, I understand, go.” You held his hand and reassured him with a kind smile. Getting a little embarrassed, he replied with an apologetic smile. Your sigh was accompanied by the sting of cold air touching your skin as you sat in silence. As you stepped out of your chair, you found yourself looking at the spectacular view of the city from the balcony railing, everyone was awake, waiting for the new year to arrive. Your sentiments were enhanced by the view, the weather and the reset of the earth's orbit around the sun. Your mind’s feeling nostalgic about the good things that happened to you and you begin to feel grateful for meeting amazing people, including Stephen.
“I hope he’s got one hell of an excuse.” Suddenly, Stephen interrupted your train of thought, making you jump lightly and turn around, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” As Stephen continued to walk, he paused for a moment, hands in his pockets, and then he continued back to you.
“He does actually, out of hospital cardiac arrest.” You answered without looking at him and went on admiring the city while he was admiring you.
Stephen nodded, now looking at the sparkling horizon as well. Even though there was no awkwardness between you, the silence between you felt heavy, especially since both of you still have some things on your minds.
“(Y/N),” “Stephen,” All of a sudden, both of you spoke at the same time, causing you both to laugh casually, Stephen insisting that you go first.
“It was all you wasn’t it?”
“Can you elaborate on that?” The man asked with his eyebrows raised.
“The chocolates, the flowers, the notes. All the weird coincidental things that've been happening in the last few months. That was all you, wasn’t it?” You elaborated just like he asked and he nodded.
“Yes, that was all me– well this kid actually helped me– but I’m trying to make up for the things I wasn’t able to do when we were with each other,” he confessed, casting a quick glance at your face.
“Why? I didn’t ask for any-”
“Exactly, you didn’t ask but you deserve everything, little things or big, you deserve all the good- great things.” Although his voice was calm, there was a sense of passion in his delivery.
“I went to your place once to return your belongings,”
“I know.”
“I stood there for a while trying to find the courage to knock but I couldn’t,”
“I know.”
“So, I took them back with me, secretly hoping that you would at least send me a text or give me a call, maybe even show up at my door asking me to give it back to you, I kept it as an excuse for you to come back to me but you never did,” Your voice gave out as if you’re holding your tears back, because now you knew that he saw you but didn’t do anything about it, “And now you show up out of nowhere.”
Stephen dropped his gaze as you explained the reason behind your visit. Hearing the sound of your voice breaking and trying to keep a brave face was like a bullet to the chest, “The reason why I didn’t do anything was because I needed to clear my head. You of all people knew how messed up I was, you asked me to find my happiness, so I followed what you asked of me that night.”
There was a good reason why you kept your mouth shut; you did ask him to find out what makes him truly happy and that is what he did.
With his fingers running along the edges of your cheeks, he cups your face with his hands, his eyes glistening “I'm a huge asshole for hurting you the way I did, you; a beautiful, smart, kind… breathtaking woman, don’t deserve someone like me but If I could repeat it again, I would do the same thing and watch you walk away. Because I would rather have you feel upset than me trying to fix things at the wrong time and hurt you even more in the process.”
After placing your hands over his, you closed your eyes for a moment, savouring the sensation of his hand resting on your cheek, “So did you find it? Your happiness?” Your eyes fluttering open, you look up into his once again, unable to look away as you gaze into the depths of his eyes.
“Yes, I did find my happiness-” Stephen drew closer to you, he looked at you intently, tucking strands of your hair away from your face, your pensive gaze transforming into a smile as you let him know that you are genuinely happy for him. Something about his gaze has never been captured by you before. The longer you stand under it, the weaker your knees feel.
Stephen wipes a tear from your eyes as you whisper, "I'm really happy that you found what makes you happy, Stephen.”
“I’m looking at her right now.” He proclaimed in his deep voice that could melt ice bergs. Your eyes slightly widen in surprise, the knot in the pit of your stomach tightens as Stephen inches closer. Finding it difficult to meet your eyes as your lips constantly entice his attention, every second spent without tasting your lips was killing him.
"(Y/N)?" Juliet called your name and you pushed yourself free from Stephen's grasp. After seeing Stephen there and not Don, Juliet narrowed her eyes slightly. She also felt like she interrupted something, "Are you… coming back for the countdown?"
You look at Stephen who looks dismayed as he turns his back towards your friend, his expressions begging you to stay.
You cleared your throat,"Yeah, I'll be right there." You turned your attention back to Strange who stood still, rooted in his position, "I'm going to go back, it was nice seeing you, Stephen." You bit your lip, but Stephen said nothing, which prompted you to begin walking back and following Juliet.
It was a sharp sound of Stephen's rapid footsteps gaining momentum behind you which caught your attention, and you felt his calloused hand snagging your wrist, the next thing you know you're being gently pinned against the wall, "Stephen!" You blurted out of surprise.
It was like the whole world melted away as Stephen sealed your lips with his, the countdown, the fireworks all turned into nothing but background noise, the atmosphere became ethereal, heavy, and beautiful. Having tasted the taste of soft lips, his kisses began to become urgent; hot and consuming. It seemed like you were losing your grip on reality when he gently slid his arms across the back of your waist securely as your knees collapsed, closing the space between your bodies. His other hand supported the back of your head. It was just as passionate for you to reciprocate his kiss, your fingers digging into his broad shoulders with just as much passion. When Stephen reached the limit of his lungs, he was forced to pull away from you after missing the feel of your lips .
He kept that close distance, his nose lightly grazing your cheek, his breath heavy, "Come back to me. Tell me I'm not too late, please tell me you're not in love with someone else. I don’t want to fall in love unless it's with you, you're the one I want to share my life with. If you give me another chance I'll prove to you how much I love you, my words aren't going to get me anywhere so please, let me show you." Stephen pleaded and took your hands, squeezing it for dear life, scared that you would walk away, “I’m yours.”
You felt speechless, after all you've been through you're finally hearing what the words you want to hear from him. You've never seen him act this way, his whole demeanour screams that he was scared to lose you, again, "Are you really the same man who threw my feelings out the window? Because if this is a dream, then I don't want to wake up. I'll give you this as your one last chance, Stephen, it's a new year, we can start over." You whispered with a quivering smile, standing on your toes to leave a kiss on his cheek. After hearing the three simple words you said, Stephen slowly sighed with relief, and he embraced you with a smile that grew wider.
The two of you turned around and watched the fireworks lit up and brought colour to the night sky, "Now I have to think of a new, new year's resolution."
After removing his jacket, Stephen threw it over your shoulder and asked, "Why? What was it?"
"I was going to throw your things out in the trash." You casually admitted and the look on his face made your laugh, "What? It's taking up too much space. My mom thought I joined a cult."
Steve laughed sarcastically and squeezed your shoulders, "Wait till you tell her that a cult master is in love with you."
When you look up at him, you tilt your head teasingly, "Did you just say you're in love with me?"
"Oh shit, did I? Must've slipped." He hissed softly, "Can I take it back?"
"Sorry, no refunds."
Stephen asked for reassurance, "Are you in love with me too?" You managed to keep an innocent face, keeping your heart to yourself as you took Stephen's hand in yours.
The cold wind whipped against your arms and you brushed it off. "Oh, it's so cold, let's go in." You went to get your wool coat which you had left on the beds, Stephen eyeing you as you walked by him, still waiting for an answer.
"(Y/N)?" Stephen followed you inside like a puppy, "You're in love with me right?"

A Guardian in Gotham
Read A Guardian in Gotham on AO3
Masterlist
Written for Maribat March Day 19 - Guardian
Note: In this AU Master Fu gave out the Ladybug Miraculous to Marinette and the Black Cat Miraculous to Adrien before consulting the Kwami. Marinette turned out to be a true holder, but for the Black Cat Miraculous, not the Ladybug Miraculous. However, she and Adrien made it work and were able to defeat Hawkmoth anyway. After Hawkmoth's defeat she becomes Lady Noire full-time.
----------
Being the Guardian of the Miraculous was hard work. There were no family vacations, no sleeping in or going to bed early, no breaks. Marinette could not relax until Hawkmoth was defeated. Which explained why it was such a jarring change once the Miraculous Team defeated Hawkmoth.
Gabriel Agreste was behind bars. The citizens of Paris were free from the threat of akumatization. Tikki, Plagg, and the rest of the Kwamis went dormant in order to restore the damage done to Duusu's Miraculous. Marinette didn't exactly know what to do with herself. Suddenly it hit her that she was no longer the middle schooler who accepted the burden of Guardianship. She was in her final year of high school, nearly an adult. All around her, her friends were making future plans. Adrien was taking a gap year to help Emilie recover from her coma. Alya was accepted to a prestigious journalism program. Nino was DJing at one of the best clubs in Paris. Luka was releasing his EP. Kagami was training for the Olympics. Chloé took up an internship with her mother.
Marinette couldn't move on, the way all of her friends were able to. Marinette couldn't be a normal girl anymore. She couldn't go to university, start a family, live a normal life. She needed the rush of adrenaline that came from two little words - Spots on! or more recently, Claws out!
It was around this time that the Temple of Guardian got in touch with Marinette, offering her an opportunity to continue her work as a Guardian of the Miraculous. They send Marinette a box of old journals, dating back to the 18th century. The journals detailed the discovery of twin "wells of evil" located in the American cities of Gotham and Metropolis, then named Mortham City. The Masters of the Miraculous who made this discovery studied the evil and expressed the desire to find a way to remove it, but didn't have the chance to complete the task before the Temple of Guardians fell. When the Temple reappeared they believed that the Masters had managed to destroy the evil in Mortham, due to the reports of the city's recovery and renaming to Metropolis soon after, but were unable to destroy the evil in Gotham. The city festered, growing more and more troubled while Metropolis flourished. Marinette's task was to do her best to study and remove the evil in Gotham.
Marinette applied to Gotham University, feeling relieved that she might finally find her purpose.
----------
Marinette's dorm room at Gotham University was rather lackluster; it was the typical tiny, cramped American university dorm, complete with a stained carpet and a bathroom shared between six girls. Her roommate was a computer science major named Barbara Gordon. Barbara was older than Marinette, a senior while Marinette was only a freshman. It was a fluke accident that the freshman dorms had filled up before she was admitted. Secretly Marinette wished that she had been able to room with another freshman. Barbara was rarely in the dorm room, too busy with her coursework and her real friends to make small talk with her nervous roommate.
Marinette barely spent any time in her dorm room, either. She spent most of her time in class or at the library studying. Marinette had the ambitious plan of double majoring in both fashion and business, in order to start her own fashion company someday. Her classes overwhelmed her, and Marinette began to regret overloading her first-semester schedule. It gave her barely any time to work on her Guardian work, let alone join an extracurricular.
Marinette wanted to decorate the dorm and make it more of a home, but because of a plane delay, she ended up arriving at the university the day before classes started, giving her no time at all to go to the store and buy anything. Another unfortunate casualty of Marinette's late arrival was that she still hadn't figured out how Gotham's bus schedule worked, so she walked everywhere, even in the pouring rain.
Overall, Marinette's first week of classes was miserable. That was why Marinette was crying in her dorm room, alone, at six in the evening on a Friday night. It all started when Marinette saw a picture of her old class on social media. Alya and Nino were making faces at the camera; Marinette and Adrien were both grinning, Marinette's blue scarf wrapped around his neck; Ivan and Mylène were holding hands, staring into each other's eyes; Rose was posing, kissing Juleka's cheek; Alix was perched on Kim's shoulders; Nathaniel had his arm wrapped around Marc's shoulders; Max was holding up Markov so he could wave to the camera, Sabrina and Chloé were smiling, holding hands.
The photo had been taken years ago, on their first day of lycée. Marinette remembered it well. They had all been nervous about starting at a new school. There was no guarantee that they would all be in the same class. Max had calculated the odds for even half of their class staying together and it wasn't good. But that morning, when Marinette walked into her homeroom and saw all of her friends sitting there, she knew that it would be okay. Chloé revealed that she had gotten her father to provide a generous donation to the school to keep them all in the same class for the rest of their education. Marinette had been so happy to get to stay with her friends. Now she was on a different continent from them.
The tears started to fall, slowly at first, then more and more until Marinette was sobbing, face pressed into a pillow. How could she have made such a stupid decision? All of her friends were in France and she left them, all because she couldn't move on.
Two knocks on the door halted Marinette's sobs. "Babs? Are you in here?"
Marinette got up and opened the door, revealing a young man. He looked to be her age, tall, with black hair and blue eyes. "Barbara isn't here right now," she told the man.
The man blinked, looking at Marinette like she wasn't what he expected at all. "I guess I should have called her before I showed up. I'm Tim, by the way. I was just here to drop this off." Tim held up a container filled with chocolate chip cookies.
"I'm Marinette. If you want, you can drop the cookies off on her desk. I'll tell Barbara that they're from you, once she comes back to the dorm." Marinette wiped her eyes with her shirt sleeve, trying to get rid of the evidence of her crying.
"Are you okay?" asked Tim.
"Oh, I'm fine. Just a little homesick. Nothing to worry about."
"You should come with me to get dinner," offered Tim. "I was just about to stop in at the dining hall."
Marinette shook her head. "I wouldn't want to impose."
"It wouldn't be an imposition at all. I hate eating alone."
Marinette gave him a wary look. "I don't know you. Why would you invite me to eat with you?"
Tim shrugged. "You look like you could use some company, to take your mind off of your homesickness. Unless you want to spend the rest of your night crying in your dorm."
Marinette bit her lip as she thought it over. It would be nice to get out of the dorm and get something to eat. On the other hand, Tim was a complete stranger whose intentions Marinette still didn't trust. Then Marinette remembered the photo of her friends and made up her mind. If she couldn't have her old friends here in Gotham she would have to make new ones. "Alright. Just give me a few minutes to get ready."
Marinette threw on a pair of jeans, a Gotham University hoodie, and her sturdiest pair of sneakers.
"So what's on the menu tonight?" asked Marinette as they walked out of the dorm building to Tim's car.
"Uncertain. I can't remember the last time the dining hall actually updating its online menu. I was planning on crossing my fingers and hoping that they would be serving something edible tonight."
Marinette wrinkled her nose. "Is the food usually edible?"
"It's hit or miss. If you want, we could go to a diner instead?"
Marinette nodded. "I don't want to spend my weekend with food poisoning."
"Good choice." Tim turned the car around and started driving into the center of Gotham.
"Are you a senior like Barbara?" asked Marinette.
Tim shook his head. "I'm a sophomore. How about you?"
"Freshman. This is actually my first Friday in Gotham."
"Where are you from?" asked Tim.
"Paris, 21st arrondissement."
"That must be a pretty big change. What made you choose Gotham?"
Marinette shrugged, not wanting to give away her real reason. "I figured all the supervillains and Rogues might remind me of home."
Tim looked confused for a second before a realization passed over him. "I forgot about Hawkmoth. It was a big deal here in Gotham when he first emerged because the Mayor of Paris refused to allow the Justice League to intervene. All because he was worried about 'damaging the historic buildings of Paris'."
Marinette let out a bitter laugh. "That wasn't the real reason, you know. I was friends with Andre Bourgeois's daughter, Chloé. She says that he didn't want the Justice League to get involved in the fight against Hawkmoth because he couldn't merchandise any of the Justice League members. Ladybug, Chat Noir, and the rest of the Miraculous Team, on the other hand, never copyrighted their images. Paris used the Miraculous Team to bring in billions in tourism and Bourgeois never paid them a cent."
Tim looked surprised. "You sound like you know a lot about the Miraculous Team."
"I got to know them all pretty well. My classmates were known throughout Paris as the 'Children of Hawkmoth' - as if it was our fault that Hawkmoth targeted my school at a rate astronomically higher than the rest of the city. Of course, when it turned out that Gabriel Agreste's son was one of my classmates the nickname got a bit more personal."
Tim let out a break. "I suppose moving to Gotham makes sense when you've spent that much time in proximity to superheroes and supervillains."
"Gotham is an improvement to Paris under Hawkmoth. At least none one your Rogues can mind control." Marinette shuddered at the memory of her friends and loved ones turning against her due to Hawkmoth's influence.
Tim pulled into the diner parking lot. The pair got a booth in the back and put in their orders. Tim and Marinette spent the night trading stories of the most interesting Parisian akumas and Gotham Rogues.
Tim was enraptured. He told Marinette that for years it had been difficult for outsiders to get any reliable information about the Miraculous Team, outside of what Andre Bourgeois used for his tourism campaign. So Marinette did her best to share all the little details that every Parisian knew like the back of their hand: That Valentines Day was the worst holiday because all of the akumas were love-based. That they were trained in school to either lock their emotions down or let them all out, if they saw an akuma, to try and diminish the akuma's power. That Ladybug and Chat Noir, once they realized that their fanbase was primarily children, made it a point to never swear during their battles.
By the end of the night, Tim and Marinette made plans to meet up the following day. Tim promised to take Marinette out into the city for the shopping trip that her delayed flight caused her to miss. Marinette went to bed that night hopeful for her future in Gotham, a feeling she never thought she would have again.
----------
Over the next few weeks, things got better at Gotham University. Marinette started spending more time out of her dorm room with Tim, and eventually, with her roommate Babs and Tim's brother (and Bab's boyfriend) Dick. Tim became Marinette's lifesaver after he taught Marinette how Gotham's bus system worked. Marinette finally got around to decorating her side of the room. Her new style and color scheme (navy blue and sunflower yellow, Gotham University school colors) suited her much better than the pinks and whites of her high school days. Her productivity increased as she settled into the school, and Marinette found that she actually enjoyed her classes. It wasn't perfect, but Gotham University began to feel a bit more like home.
Most importantly, Marinette had begun to make progress on her work as a guardian. It had taken a whole weekend, but she eventually located the epicenter of Gotham's evil, a rundown tenement building in the heart of Crime Alley. The basement of the building housed storage units, one of which Marinette promptly rented. She set up her workshop there, bringing out the Miraculous Box so that she could consult the Kwami. Tikki and Plagg both woke up from their hibernation and Marinette got to work.
"I can sense the evil," spoke Tikki. "It's overpowering."
"It's like going from the Sahara Desert straight to the middle of the ocean," added Plagg.
"It does feel similar to drowning," Tikki agreed.
"Do either of you have any idea how to get rid of it?" asked Marinette.
Tikki shrugged. "I wish I could tell you how to defeat it, but it's unlike any enemy the Kwami of your Miracle Box have ever gone up against before. But look on the bright side, we know that it can be eliminating. I can only assume that the Kwami were involved when the evil was eliminated in Metropolis."
"The solution is easy. We cataclysm the evil," said Plagg.
"We don't know what would happen if we use cataclysm against something that isn't fully corporeal."
"Then we use Sass's second chance until we get it right."
Tikki brightened up. "Oh, that is a good idea - using second chance, not using cataclysm irresponsibly."
"See! I do have good ideas sometimes. We could also use Pollen's venom to freeze the evil in place and stop it from fighting back."
Marinette could listen to her two favorite Kwami argue forever. She had missed them terribly. But she had a job to do, so she interrupted their banter. "Do you think I should use Mullo to wield multiple Miraculous?"
Tikki shook her head. "You'll need at least one other person with you. If you get hurt, someone else will have to use second chance."
Marinette pondered that fact. "Luka's going on tour next month. He's stopping in Gotham for a weekend. Chloé is only an hour drive from Gotham, up in New York City, so she could be here any time. If we plan everything right, we could have the evil destroyed before the semester is over."
Once again, Tikki shot down Marinette's plan. "This is too strong for Luka's second chance or Chloé's venom. If you want to do this right you'll need to use true holders."
Marinette winced. Finding the true holder of a Miraculous was a near-impossible task. Of her entire Miraculous Team, only Marinette and Adrien were true holders. While the Kwami could sense a person's aptitude, they needed to be within fifty feet to get an accurate read. There was no way Marinette would be able to find the true holder of both Sass and Pollen. "Okay, new plan. What if I get Mullo to multiply myself and then have each copy of me take a different Miraculous?"
Marinette brainstormed with the two Kwami for hours, desperate to find a solution to the problem that had plagued Gotham for centuries. However, they still couldn't come up with a plan in which Marinette would be able to rid Gotham of the evil without enlisting the help of at least one other true holder. In the end, Marinette decided to take Tikki, Plagg, Sass, and Pollen back to the dorm with her, hoping that they might stumble upon another true holder.
"I wish we had a better plan," sighed Marinette.
"Keep your head up, Marinette. The only thing we can do now is stay positive and hope for the best," advised Tikki.
It wasn't a good plan, passively waiting for someone to solve her problem for her, but it was the only plan they had. Marinette had no other choice. If she tried to take on the evil alone, it would overpower her. It was disheartening. Marinette rode the bus back to her dorm. The streets of Gotham felt colder on the return trip.
Getting dinner with Tim was the only thing that could cheer Marinette up, so she pulled out her phone and sent him an invitation to meet up.
Marinette: Do you want to go get dinner? I heard the dining hall has vegetarian lasagne
Tim: Sure! Be there in twenty
Marinette put her phone away as she got off the bus and started walking towards the dining hall, dodging the sidewalk puddles that never seemed to dry. Even when it wasn't raining, Gotham was a dreary city.
Tim and Marinette chatted about their classes as they ate their food. By the end of dinner, Marinette felt a little better about her disappointing day. Tim could always lift her out of a bad mood. Marinette considered it his superpower.
"I'll see you tomorrow," said Marinette as she got out of Tim's car in front of her dorm hall. She expected to get to her room without incident, but as soon as she got into the relative privacy of the stairwell, all four of her Kwami were circling around her head, speaking in rapid succession, too quick for Marinette to keep up.
"I can't believe it!"
"You've got some luck, Pigtails!"
"This is great news!"
"I can't wait to meet him!"
Marinette blinked as she tried to make sense of the Kwamis' words. "What's going on?"
Pollen's eyes were bright. "Tim is my true holder!" the Kwami squeaked excitedly.
Marinette gasped. "Really?"
"He'll make a perfect Bee. He seems so smart and funny and considerate. I bet he'll feed me loads of honey and get fresh flowers for all of his rooms and be my best friend." Pollen sighed dreamily, pure joy in her voice.
"Pollen, have you ever had a true holder before?" asked Marinette.
"Of course. It's been a long time, though - at least a thousand years since my last true holder died. I missed it a lot. But now I have Tim!"
Marinette smiled, overjoyed that she finally had the means to complete her mission, that Pollen finally got to meet one of her true holders again, that Gotham might be freed from the evil that had loomed over it for centuries. Mostly, she was overjoyed that she met Tim all those weeks ago, that he took the time to get to know her, that he was there for her when no one else was.
----------
"So the Kwami are little gods?" Tim stared at Pollen with an almost scary intensity, as if he thought looking away might make the Kwami disappear.
Pollen flew up closer to Tim to explain. "The Kwami are linked to certain aspects of humanity: creation, destruction, intuition, protection, et cetera. We have a certain amount of control over these qualities. I am the Kwami of Subjection, of control and mastery. I can give you the power to incapacitate your enemies."
"Incapacitate them how?"
"Using the power of venom, you will be able to freeze your enemies in place."
Tim wrinkled his nose. "That sounds a little morality dubious. How do you know I wouldn't use it for evil. This is Gotham."
Pollen rolled her eyes. "You're my true holder, Tim Drake. I trust you with my entire being."
"What does that mean, for me to be your true holder?"
Pollen's cheerful expression turned sad. "Of all the Kwami, my powers are the most often exploited. The power of subjection, of complete and total control over your enemies, is corrupting. However, you, Tim, are my true holder. Your self-control is strong, I can sense it. You will not be corrupted by the power I give you. You will wield it fairly."
Tim glanced over at Marinette, and she gave him her most encouraging smile. "I need you, Tim. I've needed you for a while. First, as a friend, when I was at my lowest, and now as my partner. There's an evil that resides in this city, that I have been tasked with destroying. I can't get rid of it alone. I need you to help me."
Tim's eyes widened. "You mean there's a supernatural reason for Gotham's condition?"
Marinette nodded. "There's a well of evil underneath the city. Using the Miraculous, I can remove it. But it's too powerful for me to do it alone. I know this is a lot to ask, but-"
Tim interrupted Marinette before she could finish her sentence. "You know, Gotham is well known for its distaste for magic-users and meta-humans." Marinette opened her mouth to protest but was interrupted once more by Tim. "However, I trust that you want to do what's best for this city. I'll help you."
Marinette's face brightened. "Thank you! I have a plan but I still need to fine-tune the details. I'll get back to you as soon as possible. For now, you should take the Bee Comb with you. You'll need to form an emotional bond with Pollen before you can achieve peak performance."
"You seem to know a lot about the Miraculous and the Kwami."
"It's my job to be knowledgable. I'm a Guardian of the Miraculous."
----------
"So how does a girl like you become a Guardian of the Miraculous?" asked Tim as they ate their lunch in the storage unit after a long morning of pouring over plans.
"I was chosen by the previous master. It's a long-standing tradition that the Guardian can only be a true holder, because true holders notoriously incorruptible except in the most extreme situations. I was the only true holder that Master Fu knew of, other than himself, so despite my age and despite the fact that I wielded the Ladybug Miraculous rather than the Black Cat Miraculous, the Miraculous I was the true holder for, he passed the responsibility onto me."
"How old were you when you became the Guardian full-time?"
Marinette tensed her shoulders. "I was fourteen. Master Fu wanted to wait longer, but there was a situation. I lost my only mentor, with only a fraction of my training completed."
"That sounds rough," Tim's tone was sympathetic. He placed his hand on her shoulder to comfort her.
"It was difficult," Marinette admitted. "For the longest time, I was mad at Master Fu for waiting so long to start training me. It wasn't until I got older that I realized why he was so reluctant to start my training. He felt guilty for stealing my childhood away from me. The situation in Paris was bad and tough choices had to be made. I don't blame him, but there are a lot of things I wish had been done differently."
"I'm sorry that you had to go through that. I don't know what I would have done if I had lost my mentor-" Tim's thoughtful tone turned frantic. "Not that my experience with mentorship would compare to yours, because I wouldn't know anything about being a teenage superhero."
Tim's words were suspicious, but Marinette didn't have time to figure out what he was hiding. They had a job to do. "Well, it's time to get back to work. You need to practice using venom on non-corporeal objects. I want to see if you're able to freeze the wind."
"Sounds good, Bugs."
"Bugs?"
Tim nodded. "I figured you could use a nickname. Do you not like it?"
"No, it's fine." Marinette paused. "Actually, it's better than fine. I really appreciate it. Thank you, Tim."
"No problem, Buggsy," Tim teased.
"Okay, now you're pushing your luck," Marinette teased right back.
----------
Lady Noire and her partner Yellowjacket stood in the basement of a rundown tenement building in the heart of Crime Alley.
Lady Noire spoke the plan aloud, the rhythm of her words revealing that she had spoken them many times before in preparation for the event. "I'll start by drawing out the evil. As soon as it senses the power of destruction that I hold it will try and consume me. I need you to be ready to use your venom the moment it emerges. Once it is frozen, I will use cataclysm. Are you ready?"
Yellowjacket responded. "I'm ready."
Lady Noire closed her eyes and let out her breath in a drawn-out hiss. The shadows around her darkened and she let out a pained gasp as she fell to her knees.
Yellowjacket sprung into action. "Venom!" he shouted, thrusting his palms out to let his power fill the room. The whole room lit up with yellow light, bright enough to rid the room of all but the supernatural shadows.
The shadows, which had been growing exponentially, suddenly stopped dead in their tracks. Lady Noire got back up onto her feet, a vicious snarl on her face. "You have been terrorizing this city for centuries. No longer will I will allow this evil to haunt Gotham. Cataclysm!"
The shadows crumbled, leaving behind only natural darkness. The transformation disappeared from Lady Noire, leaving behind a girl, who gasped for breath. "Tim, we did it!"
"Pollen, buzz off," commanded Yellowjacket. He was so impatient to hug the girl that he had his arms wrapped around her before his transformation was finished. "It's over, Marinette."
The girl shook her head gently. "It's not completely over. The effects will surely linger - Metropolis still sees its fair share of villains - but it will be nothing like what it was before. I imagine the vigilantes that roam Gotham will have a much easier job, though."
The boy tensed up. "Speaking of the vigilantes that roam Gotham, I suppose there's something that I should probably tell you. I'm Red Robin."
The girl blinked once, a dumbstruck expression on her face then burst out into peals of laughter. "Just my silly luck that I ask a vigilante to be my superhero partner."
The boy grinned. "I am rather fond of your silly luck. It's what brought us together."

___________________________
Akaashi had been planning to propose to you for two months. Two very long months. Well he knew he was going to marry you about five minutes after meeting you. But technically, he bought the ring two months ago. He had it all perfectly planned out. In two days, he would propose in the place you two first met. He knew it was cliche but, the place you two met was slightly unconventional.
It was the parking lot in front of the local university library. He had actually gone in to talk to the administration and see if he could rent out the parking lot from them. The request was so odd, it took them a bit of time to respond. It actually worked out perfectly since they were closed this Saturday, so they agreed to let him rent it out for his intended purpose. The staff were quite confused as to why he would want that old parking lot until Akaashi explained. They hadn’t gotten enough funding to redo it in years so there were tens of potholes, cracks, and broken pieces of blacktop. The colored lines were fading so most people just guessed where to park. But that very parking lot was responsible for your meeting.
It was early spring, and there was still a chill in the air. Akaashi was running late to one of his classes and was weaving between vehicles in the parking lot to get to his car. You were busy walking towards the library with a book up to your nose. Multitasking you know? Akaashi didn't see you around one of the cars and obviously neither did you, too invested in your book. Like fate brought you together, you crashed into one another. You completely stumbled backwards, less than gracefully, sending your book flying. And fly it did, right into a muddy puddle.
“I am so sorry!” Akaashi bent down to help you up before retrieving your ruined book. He brushed off the cover and noticed the title.
“Shit, sorry I wasn’t looking where I was going.” You apologized and he handed you the novel.
“No, no, it was totally my fault. I was in a rush. I’m so sorry about your book. I have to say you have great taste in fiction though.” Akaashi laughed lightly.
“Oh um thank you. Again, I am so sorry for running into you, well, I mean I'm not, but, uh-that was totally my bad. I’m sure you need to get going…” You turned to leave before he grabbed your wrist while he reached into his bag to pull out his wallet.
“Please allow me to pay for it.”
“No, really it’s fine. You don’t have to do that. Totally my fault. I'm sorry.”
Akaashi opened his wallet and groaned, “Ugh god I am so sorry I only have my card. Here.” He scribbled on the back of a receipt and handed it to you. “This is my phone number, text me your venmo and I’ll pay you back. I’m really in a rush right now, sorry.”
“No it’s fine really! Um what’s your name if you don’t mind me asking?”
“Akaashi.”
“Great. I’m Y/n. Wish we could have met under better circumstances, but I’m glad we’ve met. I’d like to chat about your taste in books sometime.”
“Me too.”
Eventually, you texted him, but it had nothing to do with venmo. Instead you invited him out to coffee and you two just kept meeting. Akaashi felt bad each time that he hadn’t paid you back, but you reassured him it was fine and he could bring money next time. In actuality you were using it as an excuse for you two to keep meeting up. Until finally, neither of you needed an excuse to see each other. One thing led to another and two years passed. Now you and Akaashi were living together in perfect harmony.
Akaashi had contacted Bokuto before he bought the ring. Who better to consult about this than his best friend?
“OH MY GOD YOU’RE GOING TO PROPOSE?!” Bokuto yelled into his receiver. “About fucking time. Okay hear me out, spell the question out in fireworks. She can’t say no!”
Akaashi chuckled. “Well I was thinking of going for something a little more private and personal. And I don’t even know if she’ll say yes yet.”
“Keiji are you kidding? There’s no way she can say no. You two are so perfect for each other!” Bokuto was so excited for his best friend.
“I don’t know about that first part. I just know she’s it for me. I’m just glad I know her pinterest username. I think I’m going to start there.”
“I admire your resourcefulness. Honestly, I bet you could pop the question in a garbage yard and she’d still say yes.”
Then it hit Akaashi and he knew exactly where he wanted to propose to you.
“Hey thanks for the ideas Ko. I have to go right now.”
“But you just called?”
“I have to run to the bookstore right away.”
It was perfect. He would set the open ring box on top of the book when he got down on one knee, finally paying off his debt to you.
All he had to do now was lie in wait. Just two days. He could do it. It took everything in him not to tell you already. He tucked the book into the back corner of his t-shirt drawer along with the ring. It forced a smile on his face every time he got ready in the morning.
“Hey Darling, I’m going to head out real quick to pick up the new air conditioner, okay?” Keiji yelled from the back bedroom.
“Yeah okay sounds good. Oh wait- can you get take-out? I’m kinda too lazy to make dinner.” You laughed and he walked into the living room where you were sitting. A book sat in your lap. Some things just never change.
“Yeah of course. Panda express?” Keiji smiled at you.
“Oh god I’m so in love with you.” You replied. Akaashi scoffed and leaned down to press a quick kiss to your lips.
“Okay I’ll be right back!” You heard the clatter of his keys and the shut of the door. Your eyes cast downward back to your page. About five minutes later you wiped a bead of sweat from your forehead. ‘God it is way too hot.’ You stood up and walked to your shared bedroom to change into something lighter. Unfortunately, your favorite t-shirt resided in Akaashi’s drawer. You pulled the drawer open in search of the thin, white shirt. You fingered through the various fabrics until they touched something hard and smooth.
“What- is..” You pulled the novel out and saw the title. ‘Why would ‘Kashi hide this…Fuck what if this was like a gift for me or something?’ You thought. You already felt bad before your eyes scanned back inside the drawer. A little black velvet box sat in the back right corner. Holy shit. Your hands were shaking as you slowly grabbed the object and opened it. A bright diamond ring stared back at you. Holy shit.
“H-he was going to propose?” Shock filled your body and you backpedaled to sit on the king bed. You couldn’t think.
‘Maybe the ring wasn’t his? What? No that’s stupid. Well maybe it’s not an engagement ring?’ Your eyes glanced back down at the ring.
‘Nope. Definitely an engagement ring. When was he planning on proposing? Sure you guys had talked about getting married before but- he was planning it this whole time? How long?’ And then the worst thought filled your mind. ‘Holy shit. What if he’s angry at me? I totally ruined the surprise! Maybe I can put it back and pretend I didn’t find it? No, I don’t wanna lie to him! Oh my god what if I start off our marriage with lies! He’d never forgive me! And then we’d have to get divorced in our 40’s! Oh god!’ Before you could pull yourself out of your thoughts, the front door opened.
“Hey love, I forgot my phone!” Panic settled in your body and your hands scrambled to shove the ring underneath the blankets.
“Darling?” Akaashi walked into the bedroom and saw you awkwardly sitting on the bed. He chuckled a bit, “Love? What’s going on? Why are you sitting like that?”
“Oh- me? What do you mean? I was just relaxing.” You tried to block his view from the book by sitting upright.
“Did you finish your book? Why are you all sweaty?” Keiji noticed the anxious aura around you.
“Um well you see-” Come on Y/n. Think of an excuse! Come on!
Keiji raised his eyebrow suspiciously and started to lean over to see behind you.
“MASTURBATING!” You squeaked out.
“What?” Keiji started laughing.
“ I was- um masturbating. That’s why I’m all sweaty. Sorry. God this is so embarrassing you should just leave!” You nervously winced. ‘I’m so fucking stupid.’ You internally facepalmed.
“Um okay. I’m sorry I uh I’ll just get going. Sorry babe.” He flushed red and awkwardly started to shuffle out of the room before seeing the open top drawer. Oh fuck. He immediately turned around to you and sighed. He hung his head low and asked, “You found it didn’t you?”
“KEIJI I SWEAR TO GOD I AM SO SORRY I DIDN’T MEAN TO IT WAS JUST SO HOT AND YOU KNOW HOW I LIKE WEARING YOUR T-SHIRTS-” He collapsed into a heap on the floor and put his face in his hands.
“PLEASE ‘KASHI NO I AM SO SO SORRY PLEASE DON’T BE UPSET WITH ME YOUR SHIRTS JUST SMELL SO GOOD AND YOU KNOW WE DON’T HAVE AC! UM WE CAN PRETEND IT NEVER HAPPENED I MEAN I DIDN’T REALLY EVEN SEE MUCH-” You continued rambling before he got up and grabbed your hands. When you looked at his face he had tears in his eyes.
“OH GOD KEI I AM SO-”
“Why would I be upset with you, love?” Keiji smiled bitterly.
“Y-you’re not mad?”
“No, of course not. I’m mad at myself. I should’ve remembered you liked wearing my t-shirts.” He tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. “I guess this just isn’t really how I pictured this going. I’m so sorry.”
“No, Keiji, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault.” You profusely apologized.
“Wow this really brings me back.” He smirked thinking of your first meeting. “So, I take it as a no?”
“What? WHAT? NO NO NO!” You frantically waved your hands in front of yourself. “IT’S A YES! YES! Keiji, I am so in love with you baby!” You grasped his cheeks in your hands and sniffled.
“Really?” His eyes widened.
“‘Kashi are you kidding? Of course I want to spend the rest of my life with you! There’s no one else I want.” You reassured. Slowly he propped his right leg up and looked up at you while holding your hands.
“Darling...I’m so glad to hear that because I will never love anyone more than you. You’re all I want. Forever. Will you marry me?”
“Yes. Yes. Of course!” You buried your face into the crook of his neck and started bawling.
“And just so you know, I wasn’t planning on proposing in our bedroom. I was actually planning on proposing to you in a shitty parking lot.” Both of you laughed.
“Where we met?”
“Of course.”
“No, no, this was perfect too.” You grinned into his neck.
“I rented out the parking lot too.”
“You didn’t!” You shoved his shoulder in disbelief.
“I did. I was going to finally give you your book.”
“You’re such a romantic, Keiji.”
“And now your fiance.” Both of you couldn’t keep the smiles off your faces.
‘I can’t wait to spend forever with you.”
BONUS:
“CONGRATS YOU GUYS!!!” Bokuto hugged both of you. “Akaashi I thought you rented the parking lot for Saturday though?”
“Yeahhhh...about that.” “She found the ring early.”
“Oh shit. Sorry man.” Bokuto rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
“No Ko, it was actually perfect. I don’t really care anyways. As long as we’re together.” You leaned into your boyfriend, fiance, future hubby.
“What did I tell you, Keiji?” Bokuto cawed.
“Yeah, yeah.”
“So what are you doing with the parking lot then?” Ko asked.
“We’re having a panda express picnic date on Saturday.”
(A/n literally could not sleep. Just this on my brain at 2:30 am)

The Fugitives from the Fire: Chapter 5, Part 2
“Hey, madam innkeeper: where would you normally have been in the building?”
“……Since when did you get in charge of the investigation?”
As Sherlock took the lead, it seemed Gregson was displeased, but also no longer in the mood to put up a fight.
Hillary sniffed.
“I was always at the reception desk. I’m the only one managing the inn; I don’t have a single employee.”
“In that case, do you remember when these three men came to book their rooms? Or rather, at the time, had there been anyone with burns on their face?”
Sherlock was now diverting the conversation away from the case, instead attempting to verify if there were eyewitness accounts of the other fugitive. However, Gregson responded in a low voice.
“Holmes: it’s not going to work. We also tried asking her when we arrived at the scene back then, but it seems she has a strange policy of protecting her guests’ privacy, so she doesn’t check her guests’ appearances and such too closely.”
It seemed Hillary had heard him whispering, for she spoke up in defiance.
“You know, these parts are full of people with something to hide. I always make sure they pay up, but I don’t do such tactless things as staring people in the face.”
“Tactful, eh……”
Even Sherlock couldn’t stop himself; he cracked a wry grin. He didn’t know if it was an unwritten rule of the slums, but the innkeeper’s response was certainly a little too risky.
Nevertheless, at this point, there was nothing to be gained from laying blame on her. Sherlock continued.
“In that case, when the fire started, were you also at the reception?”
“That’s right. I wanted to stay there until the fire was contained, but a bunch of bobbies dragged me out at the very last moment.”
It seemed the lady possessed a truly dauntless spirit, so much so she had been willing to go down with her inn. That elicited something close to admiration within Sherlock, and he looked over the suspects.
“You mentioned ‘the very last moment’… That means you stayed at the reception until everyone had escaped?”
“Indeed: as the landlady, I have to ensure my guests are safe. Besides these guys, I definitely saw the ones from rooms 102 and 201 escape out the front door.”
“You’re indeed the epitome of a host.”
In his mind, Sherlock added this new piece of information on the guests’ rooms.
Excluding the murder victim, there had been five guests in total.
On the ground floor, rooms 101 (Jerry Dorff) and 102 had been occupied.
On the first floor, rooms 201 and 203 (Mike Myers).
Then on the second floor, room 301 (Bruno Campbell).
As he gathered the respective locations of the guests, the proprietress spoke up.
“Oh yes — earlier, everyone was talking about who had the chance to go up to the second floor, right? You’ll have to rule out Mr Jerry over there: for some reason, he immediately ran outside when the fire began. He seemed the very picture of alarm.”
“Hmm; this man, panicked?”
As far as he was concerned, people were free to run away in any manner they liked. But the gap between that and the taciturn, mysterious man before them made even Sherlock’s expression soften. It seemed Jerry had been strangely embarrassed by that reaction, deliberately clearing his throat.
Then, the detective turned to Gregson.
“Come to think of it, when you were going back upstairs, did you go past anyone? There must’ve been people rushing to escape.”
“I remember that: I passed by Bruno, Mike, and one other guest on the stairs. But is that important somehow?”
“If the killer had been among them, then he must’ve murdered the victim in the short period between the time you went downstairs to check the situation, and the time you returned to the second floor.”
Gregson groaned. “……Of course, that interval feels way too short. It didn’t even take me 30 seconds to go downstairs and back up again. So, that means……”
The locations of the suspects’ rooms. The escape route. The span of time until the victim had been murdered. Putting together all the clues they’d gathered by questioning the people involved, a single answer surfaced of its own accord.
“——It’s impossible for the killer to have gone upstairs and murdered him.”
Sherlock sounded as if he were pronouncing a judgement. Then, Gregson finally got his head around it — just like what a detective’s assistant would’ve done.
——“In that case, how did he murder the man in the room?”
“T-Then, the man in the room — how was he murdered……?”
Once again, the John in his imagination overlapped with Gregson. In theory, this ‘riddle’ had turned into something impossible to solve, and the assistant inspector was wracked with an anguish akin to agony.
However, that was a tale that only applied to ordinary people.
With his singularly transcendent powers of deduction, the consulting detective had already narrowed down two answers to this case.
Truthfully, right now, he could proceed to the solution right away. But for some reason, he didn’t want to do that. Surely, the reason why he was investigating the truth like this, was because he saw the figure of the man before him strenuously racking his brains.
As Gregson continued to despair, Sherlock Holmes placed a hand on his back.
“Gregson, do you have a moment?”
“……What do you want?”
He looked exhausted — but that was a weariness born from his own sense of responsibility, and even Sherlock refused to take a jibe at him now.
Gregson was shouldering a duty as a police inspector, so the detective resolved to use a little discretion.
“I want to talk to you outside for a bit.”
“…………”
Sherlock had said so in a serious tone, and Gregson didn’t put up a fight.
✦ ✦ ✦ ✦
Once they left the inn, an unnerving oppressiveness made their skin prickle: clearly, the locals’ anger had only intensified. Lestrade was trying his best to negotiate with and conciliate them, but it wouldn’t be long before their frustration boiled over.
Yet, even as they were caught in this race against time, Sherlock remained unhurried. On the streets to which filth clung here and there, he began to speak as if they were simply having a chat.
“First off, from the conversation earlier, we’ve eliminated the possibility that the culprit went to room 303 and killed him. As such, we have to consider a different tack.”
“A different tack?”
“What I mean is, the idea that he didn’t attack from the door — rather, the window.”
Sherlock proposed the theory he’d thought up at the start: that the man had been shot from the window. With this idea, they could break free of the ‘riddle’ created by the locked room — the murderer could kill the victim even without going all the way to the second floor.
However, Gregson shrugged in amazement, and explained in an indifferent tone.
“This might dispute the deduction you’re so proud of, but we did look into that as well. Firstly, for this method to work, there must’ve been two men in total: one to start the fire at the inn, and the other to shoot the victim from outside. But hiring another collaborator to silence an accomplice, or settle a falling-out, brings its own share of danger. In addition, in order to shoot his victim, a gunman would minimally have to be at the same height as him. There’s a brothel across the street from the inn, facing its north wall, and with three floors to boot, it fits the bill. But at the time of the murder, there’d been people on its second floor, and no one testified that they heard a gunshot. Hence, that explanation has to be rejected.”
Unusually, the inspector had discussed his view without a hint of his usual thorny attitude.
But Sherlock was adamant. “If that’s the case, then——”
——“If that’s the case, then how about something like this? Sherlock.”
His partner’s voice resounded through his mind. Now, the detective persisted in playing the role of an assistant, raising another idea to the inspector.
“From the street beside the inn, he could’ve aimed at room 303’s window and shot the victim. With that, he wouldn’t have raised suspicions among the people in the brothel.”
“……That’s rather cliché. There were officers outside the inn, so if there’d been someone with a gun outside, they would’ve arrested him long ago. Moreover, the victim collapsed a step away from the room door. If he’d been shot from the window, he would’ve lain there still. Even if he had then used the last of his strength to crawl all the way to the door, with that level of blood loss, it’d be strange that there hadn’t been a trail of blood leading from the window. As I said earlier, as far as I could tell through the keyhole, I didn’t see any marks like that.”
The inspector calmly refuted his theory, and Sherlock made the same troubled face as John always did.
——Then and there, he eliminated one of his two suppositions, and completely saw through the ‘riddle’ of this case.
“Is that so? Then I’m completely at a loss here.”
“Hmm, what’s gotten into you since earlier? ……You kept making deductions that were quite unlike you.”
Gregson had casually said something that, deep down, revealed a glimpse of his recognition of the detective’s ability. Unwittingly, Sherlock broke into a gentle smile.
But just as quickly, he replaced it with the troubled expression required of the fool he was playing. Sherlock put both hands behind his head, and looked up at the sky.
“Hey, Gregson. Somehow, we’ve been talking over and over and getting nowhere; so for a change of pace, how about a quiz?”
“Huh? You purposely brought me all the way outside, for a quiz?!”
Gregson frowned, but Sherlock continued without a care.
“Let’s say there are two children, A and B, and they’re friends. One day, the two of them play catch at a distance of about 20 steps away from one another. But although A can throw the ball to B, B can’t throw it back to A. Why is that so? In case you were wondering, the two of them have the same strength.”
“……Hmm.”
Gregson forgot about his complaints for a moment, and pondered.
“Did B sprain his shoulder?”
“In a quiz like this, that kind of reasoning’s rubbish, isn’t it?”
“There’s a wall between them.”
“Then A couldn’t have thrown the ball over.”
“……Another kid suddenly appeared and stole the ball.”
“You’re being a little careless, aren’t ya?”
It was unclear what the intention behind this quiz was, and to top it off, Sherlock had rejected every one of his answers. At last, Gregson raised his voice.
“Dammit, just tell me the answer already! Also, what’s the point of a quiz like this?!”
“Come on, now,” Sherlock parried. “I’ll give you a hint: for example, try looking at this building here.”
“Hmm……”
The detective pointed to the inn they had just stepped out of. Coincidentally, just like the one that had burnt down, this building also had three floors.
“What about it?”
“Man, you’re still as slow as ever. Look……”
Sherlock pointed to a window on the upper floors, and moved his finger between that and the window below it a few times.
Watching that action, Gregson seemed to have arrived at the answer himself.
“I see. So the children were standing on the upper and lower floors respectively, and leaning out the windows to throw the ball? Although it could be thrown from the floor above to the one below, it would be difficult to throw the ball back up in the other direction. That’s to say, the distance of 20 steps was not lengthwise, but vertical——”
Right then, as if a bolt of electricity had coursed through him, Gregson twitched. His hand shot to his chin; sinking deep into thought, he remained absolutely motionless, with only his lips piecing fragments together into clues.
“There’s only one way…… To be able to kill without going upstairs…… In that case, the position of the body…… And it ending up as a locked room…… But, such an extraordinary method –– is it even possible?”
At his final question, Sherlock grinned.
“I don’t have the foggiest idea what you just thought of…… But when you’ve eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” [1]
“………!”
Gregson looked at the detective, standing boldly where he was.
Whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
That was what he’d always maintained.
A suicide, or an accident. Pretending to be dead. Entering the room and murdering him. A sniper shot from the window. After carefully pursuing all lines of thought, in the end, only this solution remained.
In that case, it had to be the truth.
Could it be, that he’d started this entire conversation in order to guide him here……?
“……Hmph.”
At that thought, Assistant Inspector Gregson reassumed his usual, haughty attitude: the manner of a police inspector who saw the detective as his enemy.
“Let’s go, Holmes. I’ll tell you what I’ve deduced.”
——This is my case.
As Gregson strode away triumphantly, Sherlock chuckled.
T/N: Sherlock has grown so much..! (my /heart/)

Ok, I had told Tae_ree on ao3 that I was inspired by her story Cam Girl back in the day to barf out a little cam girl story of my own, which I then immediately abandoned. I looked and I wrote this on July 20, 2020. It's not a full story arc or anything, just a little snippet I abandoned BUT I had forgotten that actually this was a stepping stone to writing Amended and Meadow, as you'll see from some themes I repurposed. I thought I'd share even though this isn't really a complete story because I think it can be interesting to see how inspiration and ideas morph over time into something completely different.
Content warnings for this: nsfw, 18+ , cam girl, voyeurism, masturbation, I don't actually know anything about cam girls and I didn't bother to learn since this was just a little writing exercise, so there ya go...
Tattoo Artist!JK x Camgirl!Reader
He didn’t watch much. Well, he watched plenty of porn, but Jungkook didn’t follow live camgirls because seeing the show live made him feel… awkward. Nervous. It felt so intimate, to have a girl talking live to the camera, to be able to type in the chat and have her notice your comment. It made it feel too much like a living, breathing person --not that he didn’t think women in porn were real! But… it was an image he was watching. Something a woman had cultivated, edited, decided to share. A live camgirl was performing in a different way and…
Well, he just felt guiltier watching camgirls. So he didn’t watch them much. Maybe he’d tune in if there was one on, and then he’d feel too ashamed of his own… earnestness. Live cam girls were a level of intimacy that… that was cruel. That he wanted. Camgirls reminded him too clearly of what he didn’t have in real life, and that made him feel ashamed and pathetic and broken. And so he’d leave almost as soon as he started watching and go find some safe, static porn.
But there was one. Ashtoreth. He couldn’t resist her. He was pathetic, weak for this woman, and wound up making an account --which he never did-- just so he could subscribe and get alerts whenever she scheduled a show. Even just the act of getting an alert made him stiffen, made the blood start to trickle south, because he knew what was coming.
He didn’t know what Ashtoreth’s face looked like. And she often wore colored wigs, so whatever he did see wasn't identifiable She had a pretty average body, neither the fit nor voluptuous extremes that tended to dominate the suggested videos. She had a somewhat soft belly and hips and thighs. She had those stripes on the inside of her thighs, too. And a beautiful tattoo along her hip that he desperately wanted to see in closer detail. Her tits weren’t huge, but soft and squeezable and real. Sometimes she presented herself bare to the camera, other times tidy, and sometimes fully grown out. She said she felt like it was a matter of principle to create videos with natural hair growth, even if she preferred to be better kept because she often got horny and juicy throughout the day and it was easier for her to keep clean. That had fucked Jungkook up for a little while. It didn’t help that she had the prettiest pussy he had ever seen, beautifully shaped and colored, and even just tuning in to see how much he’d be able to see was worth the effort. And he liked the idea that she had principles like that.
In fact, he liked all the things she talked about. She was very personable, in a way that was horribly endearing. She played video games, which had actually been what struck him first; that was how he’d found her, because he’d seen that a camgirl was playing Overwatch with a vibrating egg in, and so he’d tuned in, and she was good, and it meant the next time he’d played, it had made him too hard to concentrate, remembering the way she’d whined and moaned and cum just after she’d won her match. Fucking dream girl.
She took suggestions of things to do from high donors, within reason. He wasn’t the only one that liked when she got sort of passionate and fixated on something interesting she’d learned and wanted to share. She spoke several languages and alternated between them --English and Spanish. She claimed to speak more Korean, but never spoke that on her cams, and Jungkook was far too shy to ask her to. It would do him in, but it was also his fucking dream. Did she really speak Korean? It seemed so unusual for a foreigner.
So he liked the things she spoke about too, he liked when she shared her interests, even though it made him feel guiltier because he knew he was looking for the wrong sorts of connections in porn. A cam girl was just performing. It was possible everything she talked about was fake. She was trying to earn money, after all. It funded the toys she bought, the pretty lingerie. People funded those things, all the men and women who tuned in to watch her tease herself into a whining mess and then cum all over the sheets. She’d taught herself to squirt on camera, even giggling at how unreliable it was. She’d just started doing some anal and admitted it made her nervous. She was just so sweet and sexy at the same time, and it all fed into this horrible, horrible fixation Jungkook had that she was his dream girl, even though he knew it wasn’t true and it wasn’t real.
And then at the end of a live, she’d curled up on her side, flushed, panting a little, hand lazily stroking her hip, and said in Korean, “By the way, I thought I’d mention here because my stats say I have a lot of viewers from Asia, but I’m looking for a tattoo artist and it’s hard to find. So if anyone knows a good one in Korea, let me know!”
Jungkook came on his hand. He hunched forward, spluttering and frozen. It had ruined his good orgasm, the shock --he always had good orgasms when he jerked himself off to watching her. He particularly loved after she came, the way she lay there and giggled sort of breathily and talked about the random things that came to mind. But he had not expected her to speak Korean for the first time. And he had not expected her to ask for tattoo artist recommendations.
He froze. He stared at the screen, grunting a little as his cock twitched. Should he-- no. He couldn’t. He shouldn’t. That would be stupid. And weird. And creepy. But like… what the fuck? Did she actually live in Korea?? Her profile didn’t give a location, but he’d always assumed the States since she spoke English primarily. Did… what… and she needed a tattoo artist…
“Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck,” he grumbled, grabbing a tissue and wiping his hand off. He couldn’t say anything. He shouldn’t.
But if he didn’t, her other followers would, right? Why was she asking for recs? She was setting herself up for harassment! She couldn’t just ask people who watched her pleasure herself for IRL recommendations!
Frantic with a need to protect her, it was perhaps the only thing that could have led him to message her.
GKtat97: hello. Are you sure it’s a good idea to ask for suggestions here? You could get bad guys answering
Ashtoreth: hello. Are you saying you’re a bad guy? ;)
GKtat97: no! I’m very serious! Be safe! But if you need a place my friend does really good tattoos in seoul. I don’t know where you are looking but I didn’t know you were in Korea
Ashtoreth: oh really? Yes I have moved a few times but I’m currently in Korea. Does your friend work in a parlor somewhere?
GKtat97: yes. Byeolbit Tattoo downtown. Whole studio of great artists
Ashtoreth: awesome, thank you! Have you had work done there?
GKtat97: yeah
Ashtoreth: cool I will definitely take a look. Thank you for the recommendation! What’s your friend’s name?
GKtat97: anyone there is good but my friend is jjk. If you ask for him, he’ll hook you up
Ashtoreth: excellent, I’ll check out his portfolio on their website. Thanks babe :*
Fuck fuck fuck, what was he doing? If anything, he should have suggested her to one of his friends there. Because what if she actually did follow up? What if she made an appointment and came in for a tattoo by him and he got to touch her… fuck, that was entirely unprofessional. He couldn’t do it. Maybe if she knew he was the one watching her, then he wouldn’t feel so morally conflicted, but there was no way he could tell this woman to her face oh yeah, that was me messaging you, I watch you finger yourself to get off. Fuck.
Well. It was highly unlikely she’d be following up, anyway. He comforted himself with that. Probably a dozen guys were messaging her now, trying to get her business so they could tattoo her body.
Ugh. She’d called him babe. He groaned and felt his cock twitch in pleasure just at that reality. She’d called him babe, this faceless woman with the beautiful voice and body. Fuck.
**
As far as he could tell, no one unusual had reached out to the tattoo parlor, though it was hard to really guess what that would mean. He’d idly flipped through the appointment calendar but of course it wasn’t like she’d make an appointment under Ashtoreth. No one had requested him out of the ordinary. And she’d done a couple more lives in the past couple weeks, so he figured that meant she’d decided to go with someone else. Which hurt a bit, sure, but he was trying to be an adult about it. After all, it was for the best.
And then during lunch, Mina popped her head back and asked, “Hey, there’s a woman who came by to see if you can do a consult…”
“Is she in the schedule?” Jungkook asked.
Mina made a face but admitted, “No… but that’s my fault. I’ve been trying to get something scheduled for her for a couple weeks now and forgot to write it down-- I’m sorry!”
Jungkook rolled his eyes and teased, “Mina, it’s the whole point of your job to write it down…”
“I know. I feel so bad. I’ll buy your lunch tomorrow. Can you meet with her now?”
“Fine.”
He shoved one final bite of food into his mouth, then went to wash his hands and rinse his mouth out so he wouldn’t risk sauce or broccoli in his teeth for a consult. He was still hungry but maybe if this went quickly he’d have time to scarf down the rest of it.
He stepped out to the front area where a woman sat in one of the chairs, looking a little uncomfortable actually. He thought it must be her first tattoo and that she was nervous; he got a lot of young women in for their first tattoo, a little butterfly or hummingbird on their ankle or wrist. She stood when he approached and gave him a rather dubious smile.
“Are you Jeon Jungkook?” she asked. In Korean, which was unusual but not unheard of for a foreigner. A young woman had probably come here to teach or something and learned the language, but she had a good grasp of it.
“Yes. Hello.”
“I’m Y/N,” she answered, shaking his hand.
“Nice to meet you. Sorry about the mix up--”
“It’s my fault!” Mina sighed dramatically.
“I’m sorry I’m interrupting your lunch. Should I come back another day?”
“No, it’s fine. What are you looking for?”
“Well, I um, I need one covered up and I was hoping to get something custom to cover it. I saw your portfolio and it looks like you’ve done that kind of thing before.”
He nodded, “Yeah, it’s not a problem. Do you have ideas?”
“Yeah… but I’m also kind of open… I’m not an artist, so…”
“Can you show me what you’re wanting covered up?”
“Uh, yeah…”
“We can step back here,” Jungkook offered when she seemed a little shy. She followed him back to one of the pods and leaned her hip against the table as if for strength, then lifted her shirt to show him a man’s name scrawled across her ribs.
“Is it ok if I examine it?” he asked her. She nodded and he sat on a stool to lean in close and look. It was not well done; if it was the man’s copied signature, he had an ugly hand, but the tattoos itself was also uneven, too shallow in some places, too deep in others. However the scratchy and loopiness of it would be pretty easy to design a pattern over.
“I can see by your face it’s ugly. I know. It was… complicated,” she admitted. “I keep it covered with make up usually but I want it gone.”
“That’s easy to cover,” he assured her. “What do you want over it?”
“Well, I thought-- I have this tattoo,” she told him, lifting the other side of her shirt to expose the flower design crawling out of the waistband of her pants over her hip.
Jungkook froze. She was talking but he didn’t hear anything she said because he knew that tattoo. This was Ashtoreth. He looked up at her face, frozen with shock. This was Ashtoreth’s face. How had he not recognized her voice? But she was speaking Korean and he’d only heard her speak it that once and he hadn’t expected this
“Will that work?” she asked.
“Sorry… could you repeat?” Fuck.
“If it can match this?” she asked him. “Except adding in some violets.”
“Oh. Yes. That’s not a problem,” he assured her. “Um, how big are you thinking?”
She motioned with her hands, then asked, “Am I going to die? I know rib tattoos are supposed to be pretty bad… But I’ve had a baby and I got this thing so I’m not a total baby…”
“You have a kid?” he repeated, then immediately cursed himself. Why did that matter? But it was a real thing about her and it was not what he’d expected.
“Um, yeah. Do you have kids?”
“No,” he said simply. And then because apparently he couldn’t stop himself, he pointed, “I guess he wasn’t a very good father, huh?”
She gave him a small laugh and a crooked grin that made his heart actually flutter and agreed, “No, he wasn’t. But I did get something good out of it, so that’s what I want to cover his name with.”
“Flowers?”
“Violets. My daughter with him is called Violet.”
“Ah. That’s… sweet.” He looked away from her, sliding over to the counter to get his camera. “Can I take a picture? I’ll draw a design and you can leave your email with Mina. Once we get that, we’ll make an appointment.”
“Ok. Yes.” She turned to the side and held her shirt steady for him to take a picture of the names, a couple so he’d be able to recreate it flat.
“Mind if I get one of that too, so I can remember it?”
“Do you want the whole thing?”
“No, just the top is fine, if this has all the style elements you want.” So turned and posed for him to get this second one, and he tried to ignore that he was sweating a little to now have personal photos of Ashtoreth. This wasn’t ok. It wasn’t ok. It was unethical. It was ok for him to tattoo her if she knew he knew, but otherwise it was unethical, right?
But he didn’t tell her. Because he was stupid and struck a little dumb by her. He couldn’t comprehend that he was seeing her in person right now, that he was seeing the tattoo up close that had factored into how many of his solo sessions now? And this other tattoo, that never showed in her videos! He knew something now none of her other viewers did.
She thanked him for his time and he promised to get her a sketch within a week and then she left. The whole exchange had been so… normal, compared to how he might have envisioned it.
She hadn’t been anything like he’d expected, but maybe that wasn’t fair. He tuned into her next live after debating it, but he couldn’t bring himself to miss it. He wanted to see if he could see traces of her bad tattoo, but she did a good job of hiding it.
Anyway, why should he be surprised that she had been polite and sweet and a little shy? Because he didn’t expert a camgirl to be those things in real life? But that came through in her cams and it was one of the things that had even initially drawn him to her channel.
It was different now though. She slid her fingers down her panties and he knew what her face looked like. She pressed her fingers into her wet hole and he knew she’d had a child. He knew her real hair color and her real eye color and the sound of her voice in person. Soon he would spend hours hunched over her body, etching something permanent into her skin that would hopefully please her, that all her viewers would see on her. How would she unveil it? Would she give him credit? She’d already been very excited about the design he’d emailed her.

“Are you sure about this? It’s only been six months honey.” Your mother looked at you through the screen and you felt your heart tighten. She had that worried look on her face, the one that tells you that she will respect your decision but isn’t too happy about it. She looked different too, the wrinkles around her eyes more pronounced as she frowned and you wish you could convince her of your decision.
“Seven, actually. I love him, mom. I thought you liked him?” She had been nothing but supportive of your relationship, trusting you to make the right decisions. It had been the two of you for so long when you were younger that it always felt weird that you were on your own now. When your father had passed away when you were starting high school, she had done everything in her power to ensure you never felt like you were down a parent. As a senior partner at a management consultancy, she had long hours and business trips but she always picked you up from school and often took you with her on her business trips. Her trips are the reason that by the time you finished high school, you had been to pretty much every major city in North America. Not to mention that watching her working is the reason you were so good at what you did now.
You remember when the first year after your father’s death you had to go to a father-daughter school dance and she donned one of his old suits to take you. You danced with her that night, surrounded by your peers and their fathers, but smiling at her as you nuzzled into her neck, her scent mingling with your dad’s on the clothes. You felt safe and you decided you never wanted to disappoint her. Maybe that’s where your drive to succeed came from - from ensuring that your mom, who worked long hours but still had a homemade dinner on the table when you came back from school, was proud of you.
“I do like him, honey. Namjoon is probably the best boyfriend you’ve had. I’m just worried you both are moving too fast.” She sighed as she sipped her tea. “He’s a rockstar, I just want you to be happy but what if things changed?”
“A rockstar?” You giggled. Sometimes you forgot that your mom was kind of old school, not beyond judging a book by its cover. “He’d probably die of embarrassment to hear you say that.”
“Y/N I’m just saying. Be careful with your heart.” Her voice was stern as she looked at you through the screen, her eyes narrowed with her warning.
“I know mom. I’m sorry. I trust him, you know. I don’t think I knew what love was till I met him. Having him around makes me feel safe, less lonely.”
“He’s still responsible for my daughter being in a cast.” After the incident, your mother had grown a bit wary of your relationship. She knew he was famous but she never realised just how many sacrifices the two of you had made to be together. You knew she was aware that Namjoon would never hurt you but you still felt bad that she was worrying over what was an anomaly. Speaking to Namjoon, you knew that something of the sort had never happened to him and his members, even to his other idol friends. The thought of it being such a rare occurrence had given you assurance and you hoped it would translate to your worried mother an ocean away.
“Mom! It’s not his fault. We’ve been over this!”
“I know, I know. I’m your mom. I’m just worried.” She sighed as she resigned from the conversation. You knew your mom had your best interests at heart but she didn’t know Namjoon like you did. She had met him twice over the screen and then had spent countless hours googling him and sending you clips of him breaking things with texts calling him out (“he better not be this clumsy with your heart”). You love her but you never know how to convince her that she had nothing to worry about. “Anyways, how’s my favourite son Harry?”
And so the conversation moved on from her qualms about your soon-to-be live-in boyfriend to your business as you told her about the plans you had for your company and talked about your friends. As you went to bed after hanging up, you looked at the empty side. It was the first time in weeks you were sleeping without your boyfriend but you were giddy as you thought about the morning when he would finally move in and you would never see that empty side again.
------------
“Baby why are all your shelves empty? Why have I never noticed this before?” Namjoon stood frowning in the kitchen with a box of his dishes and cutlery, something you made fun of him about since he notoriously lives on take out, as he placed his plates in the shelves above your kitchen counters.
“Really Joon? Do you know who you’re dating?” You giggled as you hopped off the counter you were sitting at and stood next to him. Reaching up to extend your uninjured hand as far as it could, you looked at him as you just about reached the bottom shelf. You were not that short but whoever designed this apartment thought the shelves looked extra elegant if they were extra high.
“Aw! You’re so cute!” He cooed as he patted your head condescendingly, causing you to scowl and narrow your eyes at him. Before you could retort, he put his arms around your waist lifting you so you were eye level with the shelves. “See? Now you can reach! Teamwork!”
You laughed as he put you down, turning around to wrap your arm around him. “Can’t believe we live together now,” you whispered into his chest as you felt him kiss the top of your head. Placing your chin against him you looked up, speaking in a hushed tone. “Promise me you won’t start hating me and my little quirks.”
“I could never hate you, as long as you promise not to get annoyed by me practicing in our living room.” Namjoon looked at you with a wide smile, as he cupped your face, capturing your lips in a sweet kiss. You hugged him as you looked across the kitchen island towards your large living room. The large shelf in the corner that once only housed only your books and vinyls was now filled with pieces of your boyfriend. The top shelves had his books with his own organization system (apparently organizing books based on colours was too chaotic for him) as his little collectible figurines stood at random places. Not to mention the tiny baby shoes he had added on one of the shelves (“They’re just cute! I’m totally not picturing a cute fat baby with your doe eyes!”).
You both had added another shelf near the balcony that now housed his extensive plant collection, in fact you had never seen this apartment more green, little plants scattered in the corners. In addition to your framed posters, there were now paintings from his collection, eclectic pieces that lit the blank white walls in color. You both had even moved the couch to the corner and added a mirror on the nearby wall that not only made the room look larger but would help Namjoon if he ever needed to practice his dances.
You sighed contentedly as what was once your home now became the both of yours, your hobbies and tastes intermingling in a perfect union. The den was now a studio, soundproofed and full of midi boards and amps - it seemed like a piece of Namjoon had a place in your home. The two of you had gone back and forth over where to live, whether to move into his house or buy a new place completely, but in the end you had decided your apartment would be best since it was close to both of your work places and because it housed the most memories you shared.
“Oh! Or we can buy a new place?” You looked up at Namjoon’s profile from where you laid next to him, you head in the crook of his arm, his fingers tracing circles on your skin, right above where your cast ended. You were both in bed, a few days after he asked you to move in together, eager to figure out where you would embark on your latest relationship milestone.
“What about here? I like it here. This is our spot.”
“Really you wanna move in here?”
“Yeah this is where we had our first official date. This is where we found out that Ken Burns documentaries make you fall asleep-” He grunted as you smacked his chest at his comment, laughing before continuing. “This is where I first found out how much I love your food. Heck, that living room was where I knew I was in love with you!”
“Oh? You haven’t told me that before.” The two of you turn on your sides to look at each other as you grinned at him in anticipation.
“Yeah it was like a few weeks after we became official. I came over and you were at the gym and when you came back we ordered like a massive pizza and you were so giddy while eating it, I don’t know if you noticed but I’m sure I had literal heart eyes.”
“You know you really like me and pizza together,” you joked as you played with the necklace he had given you, his hand coming to fiddle with the chain as well.
“What can I say? I like you covered in sauce.” He laughed as he held your chin and brought you in for a kiss, humming gently when you separate.
“Be honest though, you totally fell in love with me when I agreed to recreate that porn you like, didn’t you?”
“Ah fuck! You’re right, that’s like the number one reason we should move in here. This is where we found out calling me daddy makes you gag.”
“Yes I’m sure it was just calling you that and not your stupidly big dick.” You both broke into fits of laughter holding on to each other, falling back into the comforting silence, before Namjoon broke it looking at you with a smirk.
“So how about we break out that riding crop again? Hmm? Get you in some of that sexy lingerie?” He moved his arm lower from where it sat on your waist to your hips, his fingers playing with the waistband of your pajamas.
“But baby you said you loved my batman underwear,” you whined jokingly, giggling with your arm around his neck as you looked at him coyly.
“Honestly? I love you in anything.” He said earnestly as he captured your lips in a searing kiss, moving his body to lay on top of yours carefully avoiding your injured arm. “Or nothing…”
------------
The first week of living together was odd. The two of you had spent the month after deciding to move in together planning so much, even buying new furniture, but now that you were living together it was weird. It wasn’t a bad weird, in fact it was a very, very good weird. You and Namjoon had never lived with a partner before and much like when you first got together, it felt easy. Maybe it was practice from when Namjoon was over all the time, but it just felt so effortless being with each other.
You would be lying if you said your mother’s words hadn’t opened up an insecurity within you. You were messy, sure it was an organized mess, but you were messy. You tend to forget where you put things, and when you’re stressed even the smallest of inconveniences make you snap. However, somehow Namjoon just slotted himself into your life so seamlessly, you were finding it hard to believe how lucky you were.
On Monday, you came home and as usual threw whatever jacket you were wearing on the floor, he followed, silently picking it up and hanging it. Namjoon was organized and that made you remember where you left your keys on Tuesday, because now they were always in the cute little crab shaped plate near the foyer. On Wednesday you were infuriated with work and when you went to pee when you reached home, the toilet seat was up causing you to nearly topple in. But unlike usual when you would’ve torn whoever did that to pieces, you broke into a laugh, dialing Namjoon at practice and telling him you missed him. On Thursday, you had your doctor’s appointment to finally get the cast off, and when you returned home to excitedly show off your new arm, Namjoon frowned at the large scar before kissing it repeatedly and spending the night worshipping you. On Friday, the two of you saw the smog warning and donned some masks going to Yeouido Hangang Park, melding in with the mask-wearing strangers enjoying convenience store kimbap and beers as you read your book aloud to him, lounging on the sloping greens. That was also when he learned you didn’t know how to ride a bike, making it his responsibility to teach you.
“I still can’t believe you don’t know how to ride a bike!” Namjoon laughed as he held onto the handlebars. You struggled to keep the balance, your feet resting lightly on the pedals of the rented bike as he slowly pushed you.
“I skateboarded instead! You tell me that once you land an ollie!” you huffed, now pushing on the pedals, albeit gently. Namjoon found your hesitation adorable. He loved discovering these different sides of you. The fact that his always confident girlfriend seemed scared of something as simple as a bike when she was apparently doing tricks on a skateboard, made his heart swell. It was like you kept all your embarrassing secrets for him, you told him things that no one knew about you, and he couldn’t wait to discover more.
For Namjoon, moving in had been as easy as breathing, even though it had barely been a week. On Monday, he took a homemade lunch to work for the first time in a year. When he opened the box, the smell of your stew lingered in his studio and every time he returned from a meeting that day, the scent made him smile. On Tuesday, you came by his building to pick him up, waving excitedly as he wrapped up a livestream and tried not to giggle like a fool in love, which he very much was. Wednesday, he was having a tough time getting the new dance routine down, but then you called him out of the blue and it made his heart flutter, reenergizing him to finally nail the steps. When your cast came off on Thursday, he was again filled with guilt about his part in your attack, but your assurances helped him ease his mind. However, not as much as you screaming his name when he made you cum for the third time on his tongue. Namjoon had never felt so connected to someone before. Usually he would be scared to share so much of his life with another person, but with you he couldn’t wait. He felt extremely lucky just to be in your presence, soaking in the determined look on your face as he taught you how to ride a bike.
“Okay shit. Nevermind that’s really hot. Let’s go skateboarding next time,” he smiled at you mischievously, knowing that he was going to let go of the bike any second.
“I haven’t done that in ten - Oh my god! Don’t let go! Why are you letting go?” You looked behind you to see Namjoon put a thumb in the air in encouragement.
“You’re a big girl, you can do it. I believe in you!”
“I hate you! I’m gonna fall! How do I stop?!” You could feel the wind blowing through your hair as you steadily picked up speed, and you were terrified. How did you let your tree of a boyfriend talk you into this? There was a reason you had legs, why did you need these stupid wheels?!
“Just push the brakes and put your leg out.”
“Joon! Namjoon! I’m gonna fall!” You watched your life flash before your eyes as you cursed, falling on to the grass, your bike between your legs. Namjoon jogged up the few meters to stand above you, almost doubling over in laughter, causing you to cross your arms where you laid pouting at him. “Stop laughing at me!”
“Sorry! I just - you were going so slow! You literally fell in slow motion!” He continued laughing, even having the audacity to wipe a tear off his eye as you glared at him, before moving the bike and helping you up. “Come on up. There we go!” He beamed at you making it much harder to be mad at him when his eyes squinted in that adorable way they do when he’s extra pleased.
“If I break my arm again it’s your fault.” You leaned into him as he put an arm around you, the other walking the bike back to its station.
“Sorry, sorry! Okay I think that was enough practice. Let’s go home.” He pulled you closer, the bike now firmly locked and no longer charging him through the app. With your arms around his waist, you kind of felt bad giving up on learning so easily. He had seemed so excited when he suggested biking around the river.
“Sorry I can’t bike with you. I wanna share your hobbies!” You pouted, making Namjoon swoon.
“Baby we literally share like seven million hobbies. It’s okay if you don’t like biking. I hate all the Shark Tank episodes you make me sit through.” He laughed as you looked up at him, even with the mask covering half his face you could tell how his dimples would be poking through his cheeks at your comment.
“You said you liked them!”
“It was a month into dating you. I lied.” You rolled your eyes at his nonchalance as he smiled smugly. You knew he hated that show, he would always be getting up to go to the bathroom or get snacks during the pivotal moments. Well at least he was committed enough to not be on his phone when you watched together. Now that you think about it, he must really love you to sit through the marathon you had of it last month.
“So what else do you hate?”
“Arthur C Clarke. I don’t get why you love 2001 so much. It’s so pseudo philosophical and the sequels suck.”
“But the monolith Joon! The spark of curiosity and ambition! And like the combined consciousness! Come on!”
“Eh. Pretentious. Douglas Adams did it better.” He shrugged.
“I can’t believe you! Those are like two different concepts!” You laughed as he dissed one of your favourite books, enjoying his warmth against you as the two of you waited for the car to pick you up in the parking lot.
------------
Saturday would mark the first weekend of you both living together, and so it was time to celebrate. The two of you had taken the day off in preparation for the first party you would host together, in the apartment you lived together. Just the thought made you giddy. You walked around the grocery store, stocking up on snacks and alcohol as Hayoon, Namjoon’s favourite security personnel, helped you carry the basket that kept getting heavier. You still found it weird walking around with the 195cm, extremely buff older man, but with the attack still fresh in your head, it was comforting having the looming presence. You had noticed that people didn’t even look twice at you, when in the past your foreigner status would have had at least a few staring at you.
Thanking Hayoon for carrying your supplies and bidding him a goodbye, you walked into your living room to find your boyfriend dancing to music playing from his earphones. Somehow in the midst of cleaning and moving furniture to make room for the twenty something people you both had invited, he had started working. You couldn’t blame him when you yourself had taken the time in the car to answer a few emails. It gave you the perfect opportunity to share your present with him.
“I’ve got a surprise for you!” You walked over to block his view of himself in the mirror as he rolled his body to some unknown tune. It was quite funny watching his concentrated scowl turn into confusion, barely hearing you.
“Hmm?”
“Stop dancing! I’ve got a surprise!”
“Can’t stop babe I have to get this down before Monday.” Namjoon looked over your head into the mirror as he continued practicing his choreography, making you roll his eyes.
“Hmm maybe Kook would wanna go instead,” you said nonchalantly as you turned around and started to slowly back away, before Namjoon’s arm came around your waist, stopping you.
“Ah baby don’t do that. See, airpod out, I’m listening!” You grinned as Namjoon pulled his earphone out, stopping the music but continuing to dance.
“You know you look like one of the sims just dancing there without music,” you joked, giggling.
“Babbbbbe! Where are we going?” he whined.
“So you know how your favourite rapper is Nas?”
“Yes I’m aware.”
“I got backstage passes!”
“What? For me?” Namjoon stilled, a dopey grin on his face as you walked closer to him to show him the tickets on your phone. It wasn’t a huge present but when one of your clients had asked if you wanted to attend, you couldn’t refuse the tickets. It helped that your client owned the stadium the performance was at and had accommodated your special requests for privacy.
“And you get to watch from this barricade so you don’t have to worry about paparazzi or fans and you can just enjoy the show!” Namjoon’s heart swelled as he heard your words. You never failed to surprise him with how much you went out of your way to make him comfortable. Lately, you’d been making him want to declare your relationship to the world. It was a dumb fantasy and the two of you had talked (argued) about going public, but between the two of you it seemed that you were more against it.
“You’re coming with me right?” He put his arms around your waist, pulling you close to him.
“I don’t know, I know I just said you’ll have privacy but what if someone sees us together? Maybe you can take Yoongi.” You look up at him with a frown, your hands on his chest, as you assessed the different ways the concert could affect your privacy. He hated how you had to overthink such a simple outing, mirroring your frown as he reached to relax the crease between your brows before placing a gentle kiss on your lips.
“Shut up. I’m only taking you. The whole world can watch!” He grinned making you roll your eyes.
“You scare me with how easily you just said that.” You swatted at his chest. It really did scare you with how easily he’d been saying that lately. He wasn’t really an impulsive person, he usually thought everything through to the utmost detail and so his recent exclamations were worrying you. It’s not that you wouldn’t like to post one of the thousands of couple photos on your social media, it’s just you were worried about how toxic some netizens could be.
“Would it be so bad if everyone knew?” He pulled you closer, arms circling your waist as he pressed his forehead against yours, looking into your eyes with a little smile, wanting to play out his fantasy.
“Joon I’m not risking your career so we can go on a few dates.” You sighed, picking at his shirt at his chest where your hands laid.
“My fans will be happy to see me happy, baby.”
“Ugh let’s not argue about this right now. Do you like your surprise?” You put your arms around his neck as you peck his lips.
“Only if I get to enjoy it with you.”
“Yes yes I guess I’ll go see one of my favourite rappers with you.”
“I love you,” he whispered, bringing his lips to yours to kiss you gently. You returned it equally gently, getting lost in the warmth as he molded his lips to yours, tilting his head to get a better angle and squeezing your ass as he brought you even closer in his embrace. Before things could get heated, you pulled away, smiling as he followed your lips, eyes still closed. You pecked his lips a few times before moving away completely.
“Hey don’t let me distract you. Practice!”
“You’re such a tease. Meanie.” He pouted as you walked away with a wave in his direction, smirking at his petulance.
“Love you too Joonie!”
------------
Namjoon was drunk. He promised himself at the beginning of the party that he would stay sober to ensure his first party with you went seamlessly, but then the Ilsan boys showed up. The Ilsan boys were his high school friends, dubbed so by you. To say you liked them would be a stretch, since he always got too drunk when they were around, but he couldn’t help it. They made him forget all about being an idol and let loose. They were some of the few people beside you and his family that had that effect. Sitting on the couch that was pulled up to the window, he felt the alcohol race through his veins, and he was in his feelings. Beside him, Harry talked to Sehun, one third of the Ilsan boys as they talked about some tv show. He was happy, so happy he was smiling to himself as he rocked his feet on the ground, a beer in hand. He was happy and as he watched you across the room, he was also a little annoyed.
You were talking to Kang, another one of the Ilsan boys, as Jungkook stood with his arms on top of your head for support and Hoseok laughed at some joke you made. Before the party the two of you had decided not to be the couple that only hung out with each other, and since this party was literally just your closest friends, it was not that hard to do. But right now all Namjoon wanted to do was be petty and shove Jungkook off of you, wrap his arms around you instead and tell you how horny your skinny jeans were making him. Alright, correction. Namjoon was drunk, happy, and horny.
He bit his lip as he followed your curves with his eyes, watching the way your chest rose as you laughed, and the way your throat moved with each sip of your whiskey. Okay, that’s it. Screw the decision, he was walking over. Plus, he had stayed away for the past three hours, even had to watch you belt out his favourite My Chemical Romance song as you wiggled your butt, that had to count for something. He made his way to your little group, swaying a little as he shoved Jungkook a little too aggressively off you, making him protest over his spilled beer, before putting an arm possessively over your shoulder. He grinned as you leaned in, continuing your conversation.
“As I was saying there is no way Y/N is a sub. No fucking way!” Kang bellowed from where he stood. Namjoon’s brows furrowed at his comment. Why was he talking about his girlfriend this way? He felt an irrational surge of anger through him. He knew Kang was crass, his talks often devolving to his sex capades a few shots in, but did he really not respect Namjoon enough to be talking this shit in his own home about his girlfriend during their housewarming party?
Namjoon’s grip tightened around you protectively as Kang kept talking about your sex life. You only hummed, seemingly bored as you drank. Turns out you were playing a game, instigated by Kang of course, where you had to guess the other person’s kink, and if someone guesses correctly, you drink if not then the guesser drinks. Apparently you were in the spotlight for the moment.
Namjoon tilted his head, eyes narrowed at his childhood friend and raised an eyebrow. Kang, luckily for him, got the hint, shutting up with an apologetic glance at Namjoon. However, everyone else in the little group seemed to have missed this little interaction.
“I don’t know… I’ve seen hyung’s porn collection. He definitely has a daddy kink.” Jungkook scratched his chin as he slurred out the words, like he was trying to decipher a difficult math problem.
“Dude Y/N would rather puke than call Namjoonie daddy.” Hoseok laughed, wiggling his eyebrows at you with a knowing smirk. You laughed, a little too hard in your tipsy state, and Namjoon felt his blood run cold. You had definitely said those words to him, even pretended to jokingly gag when he brought it up the first, and only, time. He stood straighter at Hoseok’s comment. Had you told him about this? Why would you tell Hoseok of all people? You weren’t even close!
His jaw ticked as the group laughed, oblivious to the sudden hurt he felt. He felt exposed, naked and vulnerable, all because of you. He didn’t know if his feelings were elevated with the alcohol in his body, but he suddenly felt like he was losing all trust in you. You didn’t even seem phased, not noticing that his arm was no longer around you as you giggled at their antics.
“Okay. Time to reveal the winner!” You started, your arms wide and voice low as Jungkook used Hoseok’s chest as a makeshift drum, tapping at it lightly in a drumroll.
“Nope.” Namjoon couldn’t help but cut you off. There was no way you were sharing intimate details of your sex life with these idiots. He didn’t know how things worked in Canada, but here in his house he sure as hell was not hearing his friends talk about your kinks. He grabbed your wrist, taking the glass from your hand and placing it on the table before dragging you into the guest bathroom by the kitchen.
“Aww Joonie! Now I have to do three shots!” You pouted at him, oblivious to the storm brewing in his head.
“No.”
It was all he said before he crashed his lips to yours, taking your surprised yelp as an opportunity to roughly press his tongue to yours. He didn’t know what overcame him, he initially wanted to talk to you but something about the utter lack of remorse on your face snapped something in him. Oh those guys didn’t think you were a sub? He was going to prove them all wrong and make you beg for him while no one outside had a clue. It was his biggest turn on after all, to see you confidently striding through every room demanding respect and attention, only to turn into an obedient little girl for him.
He had been horny all night, rocking a semi every time he looked at you, and your little moans as you wrapped your arms around him now only made him harder. He kissed you with more force, removing your hands from around him and pinning them to the door behind you as his lips ventured down your neck to where your blouse started.
He let go of your hands, pleased to see them remain immobile against the door, and reached for your jeans, the same jeans that had been taunting him all evening. Kissing down your body, he pulled the jeans off your legs, turning you around roughly once you stepped out of them. With your ass in front of his face, he couldn’t help himself, biting at the flesh, smirking at your surprised yelp.
He stood up behind you, bending you over the sink. Pulling your shirt up and gripping your jaw, he placed the hem in your mouth. He kissed your neck, keeping his eyes on yours through the mirror as his hands pulled the cups of your bra down to grope you firmly. You didn’t know what had gotten into him suddenly, but you were not complaining, your shirt getting wet as did your panties. Wordlessly, he continued, his hands roaming your body to reach your heat where he didn’t hesitate to slide your panties to the side and thrust two fingers in, making you moan loudly at the sudden stretch.
At your moan, his lustful eyes met yours as he increased his speed, the sound of your squelching pussy filling the air. Namjoon couldn’t help himself anymore, he needed to be inside you, teach you a lesson for being so oblivious to him. Unbuttoning his jeans, he released his dick, already dripping with precum at how turned on he was at the prospect of one of your friends knowing what was happening behind doors. Without a second thought, he lined himself up at your entrance to plunge himself right to the hilt.
You moaned at the sudden aggressive move, your skin tingling with excitement to see your boyfriend this needy for you. Namjoon didn’t usually get this aggressive right off the bat, and his rare sexual desire made you heat up, mewling at the stretch. You braced yourself against the counter as you watched Namjoon’s face contorted in pleasure, his jaw tight as he rammed himself into you again and again, leaving your breathless and with your legs shaking.
“Fuck… I can’t believe we’re fucking in the bathroom… at our own party!” you moaned at a particularly hard thrust.
“That’s what you get for being such a fucking tease all night.” Namjoon leaned closer to speak in your ear, his chest molded to your back as one of his hands pulled your nipple while the other turned your head towards him, leaving sloppy wet kisses on your neck. You need more, needed to kiss him, needed his fingers on your clit, anything.
“Joonie…” you mewled, looking at him pleadingly.
“Ah don’t try to get all soft on me now baby.” He smacked your ass, aiming right where his bite mark was visible, making you preen. “Did you think you were funny telling Hobi how you gagged on my cock when I called myself daddy, hmm?” His hips moved hard, pushing you further into the sink, your walls clenching around him and you were sure your hips were going to bruise from where they slammed against the counter. Your skin was pebbling with goosebumps and you felt like you could feel every vein on his cock as he continued to move in you. With his hand on your jaw, he moved your face towards the mirror, enjoying the way your mouth was held open and eyes wide with want.
“Answer me baby. Did you like embarrassing me in front of our friends?” Namjoon knew he really shouldn’t bring his issues into the bedroom, especially when you allowed and trusted him with how you gave up control, but the concoction of hurt, anger and beer in his veins overrode his rationality.
You felt a wave of guilt wash over you at his words, finally realizing what had gotten him so riled up. Making eye contact in the mirror, you couldn’t tell if this was all part of a scene he’d come up with or if he was serious. Before you could say anything, he spanked you again, his thrusts slowing, but somehow getting harder. Although you were concerned, you couldn’t deny how you could feel your orgasm rising, your walls tightening around him.
“Do you like seeing me get hurt in front of my friends?” He gritted out, his gaze darkened.
“H-hurt?” you stuttered, alarmed.
“Yeah baby, hurt. You think I like you sharing our secrets?” He was back at your neck, nipping the flesh and soothing it with his tongue. “You think I liked you and Hobi laughing at me, pretty girl?” he sneered, but you could see past it. Behind the lust in his eyes, he was actually hurt, his eyes glistening, and although you were enjoying this sudden, surprise sex, your needs could wait.
“Joon… fuck… yellow. Yellow.” You grunted, despite your body begging you to let him continue so you could cum. Suddenly Namjoon froze, pulling out. His eyes softened immediately with concern as he ran his hands up and down your arms to comfort you.
“Shitshitshit sorry! Was that too much? Too rough? Are you okay? What’s wrong?” He spoke fast, trying to gauge your expression in the mirror.
“Are you okay? Are you actually mad about Hobi?” You turned around, cupping his face as you looked up at him. He sighed, biting his lip a couple of times and contemplating if he should talk about it now.
“Yeah. I’m sorry I just - it kinda fucked me up.” He averted your gaze, opting to look at the wall next to the two of you, and you felt your heart ache at his words. “Like I was pretty vulnerable when I shared that kink with you and I get it - it’s cliched and basic and you weren’t into it but I feel like you guys were laughing at me. I don’t like getting laughed at by my girlfriend behind my back with one of my best friends.” He looked at you towards the end of his statement, the fiery look back in his eyes. You knew he was mad, but truly he had no reason to be. In fact, thinking more about it made you sad that he would think that you would purposely kink shame him or laugh at him for any reason.
“I’m so sorry Joonie. It’s not even like that. I’m so sorry baby. Do you wanna talk about -” But before you could finish your sentence, he spun you around again.
“No.” He spoke firmly, lining himself once again, fully back into his dominant persona. “Much. Rather. Fuck. My. Frustrations. Out. Colour?” He punctuated each word with a snap of his hips, making you mewl, your earlier lost orgasm revving back up slowly.
“Green. Fuck Joon!” He bent you over further at your words, holding tightly to your hips as he fucked you.
“Tell me when you’re close, baby. You don’t get to cum tonight.” He spoke, his voice strained from his harsh movements. Oh, he must be really mad. Namjoon took pride in making you cum, often overstimulating you, but this was new. He’d never flat out denied you an orgasm before, and the thought made you want to cum even more.
“Joonie. I’m sorry. Please... fuck! You feel so good.” You mewled, looking at him with puppy eyes. You didn’t know how long you could hold your orgasm if he continued, the coil in your stomach tightening at his every move.
“No can do pretty girl you gotta learn your lesson.” He smirked, spanking your ass for good measure, the slap ricocheting through the walls of the small bathroom. You really hoped nobody needed to pee, glad that the music was pretty loud, you could almost sing along to the SHINEE track in the background.
“Please daddy?” You knew he was mad at you for this, but in your lust-addled, desperate mind you just wanted to do anything to please him.
“Fuck off! Don’t make me ban you from cumming all week.” He gritted out, almost panting with how fast he was going, chasing his own release as he spanked your ass twice.
“God. Oh my god, Joon!” You felt him get sloppy, almost on the brink of your orgasm. Namjoon could feel you tighten impossibly hard, and with one last thrust he pulled out, stroking himself before cumming on your ass with a loud groan. You whined, your head on your arms as you felt your orgasm ebb away, your clit throbbing in need.
Namjoon leaned next to you, catching his breath, as he looked at your wrecked state, legs shaking, hair a mess, your tits hanging out of your bra.
“Did you cum?” he asked, stroking your hair as you looked up at him.
“No…” He kissed you at that, gently and quickly.
“Good girl. Now let’s clean you up, we have a party to host.” He buckled his pants, as he handed you some toilet paper, fixing your shirt, and once you cleaned up, helping you put your pants back on. He was still hurt, but weirdly sated. He knew it would take time for him to get over this, but he still felt lucky knowing that you’d understand as he watched you fix your makeup in the mirror.
“Joon, are you still mad?” You spoke after a few minutes, voice uncharacteristically meek, making Namjoon wish he waited till after the party was over, so he could tend to you properly after being so rough.
“A little. It’s just kind of stings right now.” He spoke after a few beats of contemplation leaning against the sink. When in other relationships, he got used to just saying he was fine, with you he felt that he could be honest even if it hurt, and although he still felt somewhat betrayed, he couldn’t help himself.
“I’m sorry, truly. I swear it’s not what you think. We weren’t laughing at you, promise! I love you.” You looked at him with such sorrow that he almost felt stupid for having such feelings, wanting to pacify you, but he knew you’d hate it if he did so.
“Ah don’t make that face.” He pouted at you slightly, cupping your face in his hands.
“What face?” You ask, eyes wide, cheeks a little squished by his hands and he felt his heartbeat accelerate.
“That face! Makes me want to kiss you.” He whispered, before capturing your lips in a tender kiss, his thumbs stroking your cheekbones.
“Joonie… baby, talk to me.” You pleaded, you hands on his, but he just leaned down to peck your forehead instead.
“Shh, yellow on this convo for now. Let’s just go back to the party. I love you too, pretty girl.” He smoothed your hair once again, before moving to the door. He paused at your lack of movement, turning around to see you frowning as you looked at him. He knew you wanted to talk it out, it was in your nature to solve problems immediately, but Namjoon needed time. If he talked about it now, he would probably get angry, or worse start crying. He needed to think things through.
“Even when you’re mad?” you said quietly.
“Even when I’m mad. Now let’s go before anyone figures we’re missing.” He took your hand and walked you out, the party none the wiser of your little indiscretion. However, if anyone was paying attention, they would have noticed how off the mood was between the two of you, your smiles not reaching your eyes, and your cups always empty.
----------
You stared at the screen, the cursor blinking as you tried to put your thoughts together. This expansion into Japan was going to be the death of you. You had been working on the strategy for months now but nothing appealed to the board who never lost the opportunity to remind you of your age or lack thereof. With your combined shares Harry and you could technically override any of their decisions, but antagonizing the board further would only lead to more problems in the future so you just grinned and bore it.
You had spent all day at the office trying to figure out the new strategy to beat out the competing company that already existed in Tokyo to get sufficient market share to make the expansion viable. Siwon had been kind enough to be your scribe while you word vomited at him but as you looked at the page now it made little sense. You were kind of embarrassed that he had to type out this bullshit.
Frustrated at your lack of progress, you looked at the clock, and reading the 11:34 pm displayed there with a grimace as you stood up to walk to the kitchenette on your floor. Starting a pot of coffee you talked to yourself as you fidgeted with the cups, stacking them this way and that. You kind of wished Harry would’ve stayed late tonight to talk through the strategy with you but apparently Jen had been pretty annoyed with all his late nights so you had no choice but to do it alone. You didn’t mind it as much usually, you enjoyed the silence of the empty building, enjoyed filling it with your favourite songs as you worked through your thoughts.
Tonight however you were pretty annoyed to be working late. After the party, Namjoon had spent Sunday sulking about, still refusing to talk out what you thought was a minor issue of miscommunication. If you were being honest, part of your frustrations tonight might be due to the fact that a part of your brain kept pestering you with the same thoughts. Mom was right, you moved in and look, already not talking to each other. If you can’t resolve this tiny fight, how will you have a future? He’s probably sick of you already.
Trying to practice your coping mechanisms, you let the thoughts pass through your head. They were just negative thoughts, they did not define you as a person, do not react to them. You took a deep breath, focusing instead on the task ahead.
As you walked to your desk with your third cup of coffee of the evening and thought about your business plans, you started resenting your board more and more. It was one thing to want a flawless strategy but they failed to understand that there was literally no strategy in the world that would be as risk averse as they wanted. They thought you too impulsive, too bull-headed to do something that was low risk. They had the audacity to think that you were building all the riskiest strategies on purpose when in reality to get the outcome you wanted there had to be an equal amount of risk to go with it. Sighing, you started typing your thoughts, bulleted, on the doc as your phone rang.
“Namjoon?” you asked as soon as you picked up the phone, a bit surprised that this is how he was choosing to break his pseudo silent treatment.
“Just called so you’re not startled.” You heard Namjoon twice, once in your speaker and once from right in front of you. Regardless of his efforts, you jumped in your seat to see him standing in front of you. Holding your hand on your heart, you looked up at your boyfriend standing over your desk in a matching pair of grey sweats and sweater, a black mask under his chin as he looked at you with amusement at your reaction. It never failed to endear him how you were easily startled at the smallest things.
“Did you eat yet?” He asked as he leaned over the desk, his lips puckered. Sighing a yes, you kissed him, feeling your stress reduce at the touch, relieved that he seemed to be more open to communicating now.
“What brings you here?” You asked, reclining back in your seat as Namjoon pulled up a chair next to you.
“I just got done. Thought I’d pick you up.”
“How did you even know I was still here?”
“Boyfriend senses.” He winked, his arm resting on the back of his chair. You raised an eyebrow, skeptical, and really wishing he didn’t go all the way home to come back. “Fine. Siwon texted me. You know it’s bad form to worry your assistant so much he has to call your boyfriend for back up.”
“I’m sorry he texted you.” You leaned forward in your chair with a sheepish smile. Inside however, you were glad Siwon had given Namjoon a push to talk to you. Knowing Siwon you were sure it wasn’t a random concern but probably born out of your talk with him this morning.
He made a noise stating his displeasure at your apology and shaking his head, before reaching out to hold your hand where it lay on your lap. “So when’s this due?”
“Can we talk about Saturday night?” You answered his question with your own, dreading a mood swing, but impatient to explain your side and ease his worries. You really wanted things to go back to normal. Even though it had only been one day, you missed him. He had barely cuddled you in his sleep the last two nights, and you missed the intimacy, and as needy as it sounded in your head, you just wanted him to hold you.
He sighed deeply, leaving your hand to run his hands over his face. With his elbows on his knees, he hunched down, covering his face. He really should let you explain, but he was tired from practice and he didn’t know if he had the mental capacity to deal with an argument. “It’s okay. I’ll get over it.”
“Please. Let me explain.” You stood from your chair squatting in front of him and pulling his hands away to make him look at you. With another sigh of resignation, Namjoon nodded for you to continue.
“Hoseok doesn’t know anything. He said that as a joke randomly.” You spoke carefully, watching Namjoon’s eyes widen as he frowned. “Honestly he’s been your friend for so long I just assumed you told him that’s why he was looking at me like that. You know I didn’t agree or disagree. I just laughed because of the memory.”
Namjoon felt like an idiot. It was such a simple explanation. He was kicking himself for not thinking about this earlier, for spending a whole day avoiding you. As he looked at the earnesty in your eyes, he wanted to go back in time and smack himself on the head for making you feel guilty over this non-issue.
“I’m a fucking asshole,” he groaned, covering his face as he rolled his chair away from you in shame. You stood, walking over to him before pulling his hands away yet again, sitting in his lap sideways. His hands instinctively went around your waist, making sure you didn’t slip off.
“No I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have laughed,” you whispered, frowning as you put your arms around his neck, playing with the hair on his nape.
“I’m such an idiot,” he sighed, rubbing his hand on your thigh, his touch sending a comforting warmth through you. “Also, I’m sorry for earlier.”
“For what?”
“Not letting you cum.” He looked so devastated, his lips pulled down by his guilt as he stared at you, that all you could do was giggle. It was silly that he thought some of the best sex you’d had was bad just because you didn’t cum.
“It’s fine you were in your dom persona.” You smoothed his hair as you kissed his cheek, making him shyly turn away from you, before he looked at you with a determination in his eyes.
“No it’s not fine. In all the research I’ve done one thing they always warned against was domming angry or like using it to resolve issues or punish your partner in a way they didn’t know what started the punishment, and I don’t know what came over me. I was mad and it was unfair of me to use our kinks against you.” He ranted, his frown getting deeper as his grip around you got tighter. With all his goofy antics around you usually, you forgot how serious Namjoon could get, and although the two of you had promised each other to be honest, it was still jarring to hear his rant. It meant he had been thinking about his actions and it bothered you that he was feeling guilty. When he stopped to take a breath, you brought his lips to yours, kissing him with all the affection you could muster. It wasn’t hard - showing him you loved him. In fact, it was the easiest thing to do, as you let your lips assure him and ease the storm in his head.
“I’m perfectly okay Joonie. It was hot.” You chuckled as you broke away and met his gaze filled with adoration. You felt lucky to have him in your life, and although this fight didn’t seem to have lasted that long, you missed him. Kissing him at midnight in your office, you felt content, your stress from the day melting away at his touch.
“Still. I’m sorry. Let me make it up to you?” He said as he kissed you again. “Let’s go home, baby.”
You stood and as you packed your stuff, he clung on to you, nuzzling your neck, equally missing your touch. Although you were headed home, you felt it in his arms already.

All I Do Is For You
"Just one drink."
Ron Weasley was not having the evening he had planned out. He had gotten home earlier today, surprising his wife Hermione, excited to deliver her the news of his recent resignation from the Auror Corps. With his wife now pregnant, Ron thought it would be good to settle down into a less life-threatening job, so he had asked George if the offer to come work with him still stood. George had told him he could start as soon as the month was over, which left Ron at least two more weeks to resign from his post in the Auror office and meet up with his brother at the shop to discuss business.
Harry had, of course, expressed his sadness over the news, no longer having his friend as his partner, but he understood Ron's reasons entirely and reassured him of his support, wishing Ron luck in whatever new endeavors he decided to pursue in this new chapter of his life. Leaving Harry had been the toughest part of this decision, but Ron was absolutely sure of what he wanted, and that was a future with Hermione and their kids with a stable job to provide for them without worrying them sick if he was going to get back home everyday.
He arrived home with the biggest grin plastered on his face, almost bursting into the living room to wrap Hermione into a hug and twirl her around as he told her of his plans. The grin fell off his face as soon as he started rambling excitedly, and realized she wasn't grinning back. Instead, she was frowning deeper and deeper as he went on, looking at him disapprovingly, which Ron had to admit hurt a bit; he felt like he was back at Hogwarts, having told her he forgot to finish his essay with that sheepish smile he knew would get her to help him out.
But the words that came out of her mouth were even worse.
"You can't do that, Ron!" she exclaimed heatedly in that familiar bossy tone.
Ron was not expecting this reaction at all, and it took a moment to register what she had just said, but when he did, all he felt was confusion. It didn't help that his temper had started to rise.
"And why is that?" his voice already had a dangerous edge to it, as he tried reigning in his growing anger he knew would cause a massive blow up.
"You shouldn't make a decision like that just because of me!" she shrieked louder, clearly not trying to control her own temper. Ron knew it wouldn't be good for her or the baby if this situation got too heated, so he needed to try and calm her down.
"What do you mean?" he attempted to keep his voice neutral, only succeeding in hiding his irritation a little bit, but it didn't matter because Hermione seemed to be making no effort to avoid rowing with him.
"You should've consulted me first!" her words pierced him deep, and not just in volume, but the weight of their implication.
You should've consulted me first. Why? He was a grown man, capable of making his own damn decisions! Clearly, she didn't think so, if she thought he had to go to her every time he wanted to take a new step in his life. He thought she had seen him maturing, had seen the responsible individual he had become in all of their years since Hogwarts. They had been married for nearly six years now for Merlin's sake, and he was still being treated like a stupid toddler! All he wanted was to surprise her with a bit of news that should've sent her over the moon in elation; he was doing this for her and their baby. She should've been proud, not hacked off, snapping at him.
He couldn't take this anymore, he needed to get away before he said something he'd really regret.
"Consulted you first? Hermione, I-" he cut himself off before blowing out a large breath, rubbing his hair and his face in exasperation.
"I just th-"
He didn't let her finish. Instead, he quickly turned towards the entrance and told her hurriedly that he needed to be alone for a bit and promised her he would come back before their usual bedtime.
And that's how he now found himself in a little muggle pub in London, a distance away from the Leaky Cauldron. He knew Hermione wouldn't think to look for him here, and since she was pregnant, fast wizarding travel wouldn't be an option, so it would be a while before he was found. All the more time for him to blow off steam and sort out his emotions to confront her in a more level-headed way later.
He was finally served his drink, and was about to down it when a voice from behind made his body tense up.
"Ron?"
He slowly put the glass down before sighing, finally turning towards the source of the voice he'd recognize anywhere.
"Hey." His tone indicated he was still holding on to his previous irritation. But then he noticed her puffy red eyes, which meant she had been crying for a while now, and immediately all of his previous anger and annoyance melted away as he took two long strides, engulfing her in a comforting hug, She continued to sob on his chest.
"Shh, it's okay, it's okay, love." He attempted to soothe her by caressing her hair and back in that practiced manner he got from years of unwinding her. No matter how hacked off he may have been with her before, he never wanted to see her cry, especially if he was the cause, which was just ten times worse.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry, darling." She started to calm down a bit, her sobs subsiding, but she still struggled to get the words out through her hiccups.
"Love, it's okay, really."
"No, Ron, it's not okay, please don't downplay this now just because I'm a sobbing mess. I'm sorry for how I handled all of this. You have to know that I'm very very proud of you, and I'm happy beyond words for your decision, truly, I totally support you." He could tell she was trying to keep her voice steady, though it still came out a little shaky.
He gulped, knowing that there was a "but" in somewhere in there. "I believe you. I do," he breathed in and closed his eyes, cursing himself for sounding so pathetic. "So why did you react like that, then?" Ron tried not to let the hurt resurface, but he couldn't help it.
"Because…" He felt her pull away to lift her head from his chest, and he opened his eyes meeting her gaze. "Because I didn't want to feel like I was forcing you to make a decision you didn't want to just to make me happy." Her lower lip trembled and another tear escaped, trailing down her left cheek as Ron raised his right thumb to wipe it away before cupping her cheeks, which just made Hermione tear up more.
"Hermione, I'd never do such a thing, I can promise you that. I won't ever feel pressured into doing anything I'm not comfortable with. This decision came to me because I want to start a safer job for our family." As he said this, he moved one hand to her belly. “One that won't leave you and our kids worrying for me every day. It had nothing to do with me feeling forced to resign so you would be happier."
She was speaking very shyly now, as if she was embarrassed for being so emotional before. "It's just that you always said you wanted to be a part of the Aurors and you seemed so content with that, so I felt guilty for wanting you to have a less risking job. When you came home earlier so excited about it, I felt so overwhelmed by everything that it just came out all wrong when I tried explaining myself. I take back everything I said. You shouldn't have had to consult me for that. You're not a child, you're completely responsible for decisions such as this and I totally understand that."
"And you know I already forgave you," he offered her a smile that she returned. "I'm sorry, too, for leaving like I did, I shouldn't have done that." He looked away and tried not to think back to that time — he had already let that guilt go and both Hermione and Harry had forgiven him long before that.
She nudged his face to look back at her before speaking in a soft tone, "You don't need to be sorry for that. You did the right thing. Sometimes it gets to be too much and you need to step away and let your mind cool down a bit before you end up saying or doing something you'll regret. As long as you come back, I won't ever hold it against you."
Fuck, he loved this woman. She always knew just when to say the right thing to make him feel instantly better. He lowered his lips gently to hers as he tried to convey just how much he felt for her even after all their years together; he knew those feelings would never change.
She reluctantly pulled away as she whispered, "Let's go home," her voice laced with want.
He nodded, before remembering what he meant to ask her from the beginning, "How did you find me, by the way?"
She blushed then, like a kid caught with their hand on the cookie jar, before muttering, "I knew you wouldn't be in any places I was already familiar with, so I flooed George to ask if he knew where you might've gone, and he told me you came in here with him shortly after the war to talk about Fred. I jotted down the address and headed to Diagon Alley so I could get here through the Leaky and then took a taxi."
She was brilliant, and he told her so for only the umpteenth time, watching as she smiled in that way she did after a compliment to her intellect.
"Let's head home then, so we can dance to those Beedles you love playing on the radio." He gave her his trademarked lopsided grin that he knew left her feeling all hot and bothered.
"The Beatles, Ronald, honestly!" she exclaimed in a tone of mock indignation, but couldn't help cracking a small smile from the corner of her mouth.
"You know I love to rile you up." He winked to convey to her he knew exactly what the correct name was.
"Oh, yeah? Well, two can play that game," she bit her lip while grinning, something she knew very well left him wanting her immediately.
"Hermione…" He all but groaned her name, his body already responding to her.
"Yes, darling?" Her seductive tone paired with that endearment she knew drove him crazy was making it very hard for him to control himself out in the streets.
"C'mere," He growled, already stepping closer to her.
She shook her head and started backing away still biting her lip and giggling, clearly having way too much fun torturing him like that.
He wasn't having it, though. He grabbed her, making sure to be gentle, and started carrying her bridal style.
"Ronald! Put me down this instant! You're going in the wrong direction!" She tried sounding reprimanding through her fit of laughter but all it did was make him walk faster.
"Nope, we are heading to an inn nearby, because I'm not waiting to get home to have you. You've been very naughty, Mrs. Weasley." He knew she loved when he did his version of the "McGonagall voice."
"Oh, is that so? Then I suppose you will hand me a punishment?" She slid into the role of innocent student very well, even now.
He dipped his head to whisper in her ear, "It ain't a punishment if you enjoy it, huh?" Feeling her shiver at his tone made him want her even more urgently.
Before they entered the inn, he said, "You were actually right about one thing, love."
"Oh?"
"I was content with being an Auror. But I'm truly happy just being with you, no matter what my career might be. All I do is for you."
And he meant every word.
As Hermione beamed at him, already tearing up once again, she captured his lips in a heated kiss. Ron considered how incredibly lucky he was. He had survived a bloody war, went through so much heartbreak and grief, but now had a whole new journey ahead of him about to begin with the love of his life by his side for the whole ride. Because it never truly ends until it's all over.

Hi are you still accepting prompts? if you do here’s one: Hayes doing something special for Meredith’s birthday.. No pressure though take your time writing you are such a great writer💕
Celebrate - Merhayes
Thank you so much, that means the world! Hope you enjoy x
Meredith Grey had never been one to celebrate her birthday. Ellis had never bothered with birthday parties for her little girl, the day was never made a fuss out of. By the time Meredith had moved out and one to college, she didn’t see the point in celebrating it. It was only after meeting Derek that her own birthday began to have special memories attached to it. He’d pestered her for months about when her birthday was and was mortified when she at last told him and had found out that he was two months late. The date was now permanently etched into his brain and he made sure that regardless of how lowkey the celebration might be, Meredith would always celebrate another turn around the Sun. Ferry boats, dinners and long drives had become the tradition and Meredith found herself looking forward to it.
Since her husband’s passing though, Meredith had stopped bothering again. Whilst she made sure she went all out for her kids, she would stop her sisters and friends from doing anything that resembled celebration for her. Maggie had put her foot down and yelled when Meredith tried not to accept the present that’d been gifted to her though. Her kids would bake her a cake with the help of their aunt’s, with homemade cards and presents and Meredith thought it was perfect. That was all she needed for her birthday. That and a good surgery.
After six months of dating Meredith and having celebratedhis own birthday with her, Cormac was beginning to get curious as to when Meredith’s was. When he had asked her once before she just laughed it off, saying that he would have to find out himself. So, he’d een on a hunt to figure it out. It seemed that Meredith had briefed the entire hospital staff on not letting him know her birthday.
Hie’d asked both Amelia and Maggie multiple times but neither of them would let up. Amelia seemed to enjoy watching Cormac’s torture over not knowing the date whlst Maggie seemed pained that she couldn’t say anything, reminding Cormac every time he asked that she was not willing to face her sister’s wrath .
Cormac and Maggie were stoof across each other in the OR when he tried one more time. “You know, I wouldn’t let her find out that you told me…”
Maggie knew exactly what he was on about without having to ask. She just shook her head as she continued to work. “I’m the first person Meredith would come to if she found out that you knew. She knows that I’m terrible at keeping secrets. Remember when you two told me you were dating.”
It had be pure tiorture for Maggie not to say anything to anyone else. She was fit to burst with happiness for her sister but she hadn’t been allowed to say a word for three months. She’d spent way too much time ranting to Ameliia about why she wasn’t able to understand the reason that Cormac and Meredith wasnted to keep their relationship a secret. When the couple had finally told everyone, Maggie had felt a weight lift off of her shoulders and Meredith wsa pleasantly surprised at how well her sister was actually able to keep a secret.
“Why are you so desperate to know about her birthday, anyway?”
Cormac gave her a flat look, “She’s my girlfriend, Pierce. I feel like it’s something that I should know.”
“It’s not like you’re going to be able to do anything with the information. You know that she doesn’t like to celebrate.”
Cormac gave her a knowing look, “That’s because you’ve always given her an option.”
After a touch-and-go surgery, Cormac headed up to his office to grab some files before a consult. As he stepped into room, he felt shoe slid against something on the floor. Not the usual grip the carpet would give him. Looking down, he saw a small sheet of paper. As he picked it up to take it to the bin he saw some writing on it.
‘September 19th but I didn’t tell you -M’
Cormac smiled, he owed Maggie big time. Making a mental note of the date, Cormac knew it wasn’t one that he would forget anytime soon, he scrunched up the paper and tossed it into the bin. Plans began to form in his mind as he went about his day. He had two weeks and that was more than enough.
***
When September 19th rolled around, Meredith was treated to breakfast in bed courtesy of her kids with a side of birthday cake. Meredith arched a brow at the cake and looked at Amelia who just shrugged.
“It’s your birthday, you can have cake at 7am!” She defended quickly as the kids crawled up on the bed next to Meredith.
After opening her cards and presents and sending the kids off to school, Mer headed straight to the hospital. She had a whipple at 9 AM that she was looking forward and a fully booked day of surgeries after that. There was nothing more that she could have wanted for the day.
The entire day had gone by and Meredith thought it was strange that she hadn’t even caught a glimpse of her boyfriend. Even on their most busy days, they would end up finding time to at least have a coffee together but he hadn’t even messaged her. A younger Meredith would have worried that something had gone wrong, that he was angry with her for some unknown reason but these days, she was able to be a little more rational, if not completely. He must just be busy with consults and surgeries, or maybe the boys had something on that had slipped her mind when he mentioned it. Whilst Cormac didn’t know it was her birthday and she wasn’t planning on celebrating, it would have been nice to see him for a minute.
After getting changed back into her street clothes and grabbing her bag, Meredith made her way out of the hospital, ready to get home. She was a few steps away from her car when she felt a arm slip around her waist and a kiss pressed onto her temple.
“Sorry I haven’t had a chance to see you today,” Cormac’s Irish lilt immediately ebbed away any tiredness she had been feeling as she leaned into his side. “Forgot I had a meeting with Bailey this morning and then had back-to-back surgeries.”
Meredith took a second to breath in familiar scent of her boyfriend. It never failed to make her feel safe. “Was everything okay?”
“Mostly, got a 10-year-old boy in the ICU right now but Schmitt will page me if anything happens.”
Meredith suddenly realised that during the course of the conversation, Cormac had veered them away from her car. “Uh, my car is back there.”
Cormac have a light squeeze to her waist, “I know but I haven’t had a chance to see you today so let me take you home.”
“My car though…” She trailed off, not really bothering to put up a fight. Meredith had missed him wasn’t going to say no to being able to spend a little time with him on the drive home.
“I’ll pick you up tomorrow and you can take it home after your shift.”
“As long as you don’t mind…”
Cormac rolled his eyes at her, smiling, “I wouldn’t offer if I did, come on.”
As Cormac drove away from the hospital, Meredith leaned her head back against the headrest and closed her eyes for a minute. She slowly opened them as she felt Cormac’s hand rest on her thigh and gave him a smile.
“Wait, where are we going?” Meredith looked out the window to realise that this wasn’t the usual route home.
Cormac grinned at her quickly before looking back at the road, “Just thought we would take a detour.”
“A detour where?” She asked, slightly sceptical.
When Cormac didn’t reply, she decided to continue pressing for answers. “You know I have kids at home? Alone, right now?”
“Well, I know that’s a lie because I saw Winston before he left two hours ago who said he was going to your house to keep an eye on the kids.”
“Hmm…” Meredith both admired and hated how Cormac had an answer for everything. It was infuriating at the best of times but he was one of the only people she knew that could match her toe-for-toe.
After a while, Meredith saw that they were out of the city limits. “You know, if you don’t want to be with you just have to say, no need to drive me into the middle of nowhere to kill me and dump the body.”
“Oh ha ha,” Cormac laughed drily, “Like you would ever make it easy for me to kill you anyway….”
Meredith smirked at him, a wicked glint in her eye, “As long as you know.”
The car had now left the main road, and trundled along a dirt road, the only source of light coming from the headlights of the car. Meredith had no clue where they were or what was going on.
“Seriously, Cormac, where are we going?”
“Seriously, Meredith,” he jokingly mocked, “Can you be quiet?”
“Fine,” she muttered, crossing her arms over her chest.
It wasn’t later when Cormac turned the car engine off and turned to Meredith. “Come on,” he jumped out of the car and jogged over to her side to open the door.
Taking his hand to step out, she looked around. “Whe-“
“Don’t even finish that sentence,” He grinned at her, stopping Meredith before she had the chance to say anything else. “Just trust me.”
Meredith let Cormac take her hand and guide her. She wasn’t entirely sure how he could even tell where he was going in the dark.
“Are you taking me up a hill?”
Her question found no answer and all that there was left for her to do was to huff out a breath and follow Cormac. Eventually she saw some light up at the top of the hill and squinted, trying to make out what was going on. When they were finally close enough to make out what was going on, Meredith stopped in her track to take everything in. Trees were sparsely dotted around with fairy lights hanging from all of them. In the middle was a black pickup truck. The bed of it was covered with pillows and blankets with a picnic basket nested in the middle. Stretched between two trees was a canvas sheet, projected on it were the opening credits for ‘Maid in Manhattan’, one of the few movies that Meredith was able to time and time again.
“What is all this?” She turned to look at Cormac who had a sheepish look on his face.
“Happy birthday, Meredith,” his voice was a gentle whisper.
“You did this for my birthday?”
“Look, I know you don’t like celebrating it and I know you really didn’t want me to know but,” Cormac rubbed the top of his head, “You’ve survived so much, Meredith Grey, and that deserves to be celebrated. I deserve to have the chance to celebrate you. So, you can’t yell at me about this.”
Meredith stepped towards him, wrapping her arms around her neck, “How can I argue with that?” She grinned at him before pulling him in for a kiss.

i don't know what to be without you around
Fandom: Supergirl Rating: K Pairings: None A/N: I fully intended for this to just be a goofy headcanon and then WHOOPS it turned into Danvers Sisters feelings. (Not k*lex. If I see it tagged as such, ya get BLOCKED.) Short. 99% fluff. Probably contains spelling errors. You’ve been warned.
...
Then
Occasionally, Alex would regret all the time and effort she'd wasted focusing on the downsides of having been thrust into elder sibling-dom. Because while, yes, a lot of the changes that occurred in the Danvers household upon Kara's arrival were...not great...there were definitely some perks to having a sister.
Like the simple satisfaction of a perfectly timed, “Shotgun!” victory.
“What?” Kara protested, her yawn undercutting her indignation. “You can't call shotgun yet, we don't leave for another hour.”
“You snooze you lose,” Alex told her, giving her a pointed look as she yawned again. “Literally.”
Kara rolled her eyes and returned to stuffing pairs of t-shirts and shorts into her duffle bag. Alex did the same, surveying her own bag to see if she'd missed anything. Bug spray, maybe?
She turned to head out into the hall, but Kara stood in her path, wearing a sly smile.
Alex didn't like the look of it. Not one bit.
“What's with the face?” she asked, attempting to sidestep around her younger sister. Kara easily blocked her, and crossed her arms.
“Okay, you get shotgun,” she said. Alex blinked.
“Uh, yeah. I know. I called it.”
“Which means,” Kara continued, complete with dramatic pause for full effect, but Alex already knew what was coming. The second half of the rule...how could she have forgotten. How could she have been so foolish. “I get to pick the music.”
Alex groaned in dismay.
“Kara, no.”
----------------------------------
It would take them four hours to get to the Tuolumne Meadows campground. Alex sighed, and rested her head against the passenger-side window. That meant four rounds of Fearless, though it was more likely that Kara would just play the same five or six songs she'd been listening to on repeat ever since she bought the album.
“Can't we listen to something else? Please?” Alex begged.
Kara smirked, and turned the volume up.
But of course, her mom immediately turned it back down, giving Kara a stern look in the rearview mirror.
“Kara,” she said in a tone that suggested, knock it off.
Kara quickly cowed, retreating further into the safety of the backseat. “Sorry, Eliza.”
“Great,” Alex said, sitting up straighter in her seat. “Now get her to play something else.”
“Alex, just listen to your iPod, if you don't like Kara's music,” her mom suggested. Alex sank back into the seat.
“...It's not charged.” There was a snort from the backseat. Alex glared into the rearview mirror. “Because someone lost their chord and was hogging mine this morning.”
Kara shrugged, and smirked that same insufferable smirk.
“You snooze you lose.”
----------------------------------
Four hours and what felt like a billion playthroughs of “Forever and Always” later, they arrived at the campsite, the interminable car ride almost instantly forgotten as the rocky banks of the river came into view. Alex had been here before, years ago on a father-daughter camping trip, but it was Kara's first time. As they filed out of the car and began to pull duffle bags and ice chests from the trunk, she turned to gaze out at the trees, taking a deep, calming breath.
Alex joined her, and gave her shoulder a good natured nudge. “It's nice, huh?”
“Yeah,” Kara agreed. “It's...a softer kind of noisy, than Midvale,” she explained with a happy sigh. And then, after a moment, she said, “...Sorry for being a jerk, in the car.”
“It's fine,” Alex shrugged. “Here, grab the tent.” Kara lifted the gear with ease, and followed Alex over to a level patch of dirt. “I just don't get how you can listen to the same, like, five songs.” She gestured for Kara to dump out the contents of the tent.
“No super speed, Kara!” Eliza called from the car. “You'll kick up too much dust!”
“Okay!” Kara called back as Alex began sorting the pieces. Kara stooped to help her. “They're good songs. You listen to your favorites a lot.” And Alex had to pause and silently admit, that was true.
“Yeah, but not over and over,” Alex finally said. “I'd get tired of them.” Which was also true. She remembered liking that Fray song, once upon a time, but now, it just annoyed her, any time it played on the radio.
Kara shook her head at Alex’s remark. “I don’t. There's something new, every time.”
Alex glanced over at her, ready with a retort—how could there be anything new in Taylor Swift songs? Weren't they all just...basically the same thing? First dates at fifteen, feeling fearless in the rain at 2AM?
But Kara's eyes were bright behind her glasses as she enthusiastically went on. “Like, sometimes, I'll just listen to the rhythm, or the vocals, or I'll pick out my favorite sounds, and it makes the whole song brand new again.”
Alex narrowed her eyes. “So...it's an alien ears thing, or...?”
Kara considered the question as they continued to put the tent together—they'd located all the poles and stakes, and were maneuvering the tarps into place. “...Maybe?” She said.
Alex kept working on the tent, waiting for Kara to continue, perhaps offer some sort of additional explanation. When she didn’t, Alex looked up to see that Kara’s eyes were on the tree canopy overhead. Her expression was neutral, but Alex had come to recognize that particular look.
She was listening.
To what, Alex didn't know.
“Yeah,” she said after a time. “Yeah, I think it is an alien ears thing.” She smiled. “I like the way guitars sound.”
Alex might've teased her about that, if Kara hadn't sounded so achingly sincere. Did they have guitars, on Krypton? Alex couldn’t remember Kara saying anything about music from her home world. Alex knew it probably wasn’t the case, but she imagined it being a lot of...synth-y sci-fi stuff.
She considered asking Kara about it, but decided against it--sometimes, Kara would get...weird, about such topics, and they were having a nice time. Alex didn’t want to ruin it.
So instead, she feigned offense. “Well, if you like guitars, I don't see why you don't like my music.”
Kara emphatically shook her head.
“Your music is loud.”
Alex started feeding one of the poles through the tent material. “Um, yes? That's the best part?”
“Yeah, no thanks,” Kara chuckled as she hammered a stake in place. The repeated the process at each corner, and soon enough, the tent was upright, and ready for them to store their gear inside. “It's loud and it's so emo.”
Alex snorted, heading for their pile of backpacks and duffle bags.
“Okay, Miss 'Romeo save me I've been feeling so alone'.”
FWUMP.
A sleeping bag collided with Alex's right arm.
“That song is great!” Kara insisted, already reaching for more ammo with a wide smile.
“That's not even how the play goes!” Alex teased her. “Right? Aren't you like, the Romeo and Juliet expert?”
FWUMP. The second sleeping bag hit home, but Alex didn't care. She was having fun.
“That's not the point, and you know it!”
“See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns, see you make your way through the crowd--” Alex thought she was safe, as there were no more sleeping bags.
But Kara had found their pillows.
FWUMP. FWUMP.
She laughed again, careful not to let the pillows fall in the dirt. And she was just about ready to give Kara a taste of her own medicine, when she saw that sly smile once more.
Oh, no.
“Hey, Alex, if you hate the song so much,” Kara said with a knowing look, “how come you know all the words?”
Well, shoot.
“...Cause...you play it all the time. Obviously.”
“And you’ve listened close enough each time to learn all the lyrics?”
Alex scowled. “...I mean. It’s...it’s kind of catchy, I guess.”
Kara beamed.
“Ha! I knew—”
Alex hurled both pillows at her.
FWUMP!
----------------------------------
Now
Alex lets out a relieved sigh.
Kara is back.
Kara is safe.
Kara appears to be whole and...mostly healthy. Her sodium levels are low enough to give Alex some pause, and her right leg shows signs of muscle strain, but otherwise...
“Can I go home now?” Kara's voice is raspy from fatigue. Alex shakes her head.
“Not yet,” she says. “Sodium has to be administered slowly. It's gonna take a while.”
Alex expects some sort of pushback, or protest, but Kara just offers a small hum of understanding. She really is tired, Alex realizes.
“But hey, good news,” Alex adds with forced brightness, “you do get to eat in about,” she consults her watch, “fifteen minutes, or so. Anything you want. Me and Kelly are buying.”
This earns a groggy grin from Kara, and Alex stores the image in her mind, filed under 'reassurances that Kara is still Kara, even after...everything.'
“A dangerous offer,” Kara jokes.
“Well. It...would not be the first time we bought a mountain of food, to welcome you home,” she admits. Kara shoots her a sad, questioning look, but Alex pointedly ignores it. “So. What'll it be? Pick your poison.”
Her sister's brow furrows in thought. “Um. I guess...whatever will get here fastest?” she suggests. “I'm starving.”
“Ah. We all had a feeling you might be, so,” Alex scoots her stool across the room and extracts a plastic bag from under one of the lab tables. “Snack run,” she says, revealing the spoils with a flourish. Kara laughs outright. It's soft, but it's the strongest she's sounded since returning from the Phantom Zone.
“Thank you,” she says. But Alex taps her watch.
“Still have eight minutes to go,” she reminds her. Kara nods obediently, though she's already sifting through the bag.
“I assume the apples and olives are from Brainy,” she says.
“He swears by that combo,” Alex tells her. “Don't worry, I'm pretty sure J'onn put some actual sustenance in there. You know. Red Vines. Pretzels. The good stuff.”
“...What's this?” Kara asks, and Alex wonders if Brainy perhaps added other questionable food combinations, but the item Kara pulls from the bag isn't one of the snacks.
“Oh.” Alex rubs her arm, a little self consciously. She forgot she left that in there. “That's just...” She pauses. “...I saw that. While you were...” Alex tries to think of a good word for it, but there isn’t one. “...away. I guess I thought...that if I got it. It...was like a promise. That we'd find you. And I'd give it to you.”
The logic doesn't seem quite as sound, as she says it out loud. Regardless, it dredges up memories of awful days marked only by failure, frustration, and fear that they'd never find Kara.
She shakes her head, clearing the thoughts away, and continues in a lighter tone. “Because obviously, pot stickers would go bad, so. This seemed...less wasteful.”
Kara nods, still staring at the shrink-wrapped copy of Fearless (Taylor's Version). A wistful sort of look tugs at her features.
“I haven't listened to these songs in years,” she says.
And Alex can't pass up the opportunity to tease her. “Yes. It's been nice.”
Kara rolls her eyes, but she's still smiling. “It's a good album and you know it,” she says. She sets it aside and yawns. Alex notices that she's looking a little worn out, and she doesn't appear interested in the food anymore.
“You want to rest, while I order the food?”
“...Yeah,” Kara decides. Alex stands to collect the snacks and put them back on the lab table. Kara inclines her heard towards the CD. “Did J'onn put a stereo down here?” Alex gives her a look. “Wait. Of course he did.”
Alex takes the hint and grabs the CD, pulling off the wrapper before heading out onto the main floor. The mismatched selection of furniture is currently off to the side, having been cleared away for one of Nia's training sessions. Alex finds the stereo next to one of the lamps.
When Alex returns to the med bay, Kara's already nearly asleep, her breathing slow and steady.
Alex checks on one of the computers—everything is holding steady, and Kara's responding well to the sodium. She should be able to go home tonight.
It makes Alex sigh in relief once more.
Kara's safe.
Kara's healthy.
Kara's home.
Alex places the CD into the open tray. Checks the track list, turns it to one of the softer songs, and lets it play.
Kara smiles as the opening chords drift through the speakers.
“I like the guitar,” she says quietly.

NOTES: - Brought to you by the release of Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and the realization that the original album would’ve dropped at the perfect time for young, impressionable Kara to become a huge fan. - Title pulled from “Breathe” because WATCH ME repurpose select lyrics from love songs for platonic/familial relationships. - I want to say that Kara and Alex went to a MCR concert together...or maybe mentioned MCR? In the tie-in comic? I forget. This isn’t really crucial to the story, I just think it’s a fun aside.  - Apparently it’s National Siblings Day so...yay for good timing? XD

shuichi, keebo, fuyuhiko, kiyotaka, and izuru asking their crush to call them by their first name
Tumblr media
ahh, i had so much fun writing this !
yes, i know keebo doesn’t have a last name.
don’t judge me
he babie - mod kokichi
Tumblr media
[ S H U I C H I ]
- this !!! he was going to do this today !
- he talked to each one of his best friends individually to see what they would say
- and they all agreed with him that s / o was totally into him !!
- which is so good but,,
- how would he tell you ?
- would he write it out in a note and give it to you ? profess it loudly ? tell you in a quiet way ?
- he pondered this for the longest time
- in the end, he decided to do something subtle about the change in the relationship
- well, not really subtle, but it was the best choice that he could think of that almost couldn't end in failure.
- he got so excited that he could hardly wait !! so he decided that he was going to do his thing tomorrow !
- during the lunch break at school, you were sitting with him as usual
- kaede had been absent that day, and she usually helped you with your math homework
- maki and kaito decided they were going to pick up snacks from the vending machines, so it was just the two of you
- s / o : "saihara-kun, can you help me with my math homework today ? i don't exactly understand it,, "
- he fluctuated in his resolve for a moment, almost wanting to drop the subject all together and just help you with your math
- but he wouldn't allow himself to give up that easily, or else he had 03 friends who would personally seek the end of him
- shuichi : " hey, i can but, can you do me a favor ? "
- s / o : " i can do everything but help you with your math homework, saihara-kun. "
- shuichi : " can you, uh, can you,, canyoucallmebymyfirstname ? with, uhm,, without honorifics,"
- he spoke really fast, his words conjoined together and it went over your head for a moment
- s / o :  " h-huh ? why would i do that ? "
- shuichi : " well, we're close aren't we ? ah, nevermind, it's okay. forget i said anything. "
- you stayed silent for a little while, and shuichi was really starting to rethink his entire approach to this situation
- maki and kaito came back, munching on foods
- maki : " so ? how is everything. "
- s / o : " shuichi is going to teach me my math homework. "
- he visibly lost 05 years off his lifespan, but in a good way
- shuichi : " is it okay if i come visit you at your place today to tutor you, s / o ? "
[ K E E B O ]
( i changed it up a little for his, i hope that's okay ,, )
- he was always constantly learning about the world around him
- in school, he got really surprised to see the use of honorifics and last names
- in fact, he once called his teacher by their first name without honorifics and got detention for two days for that
- after that little mistake, he took it upon himself to learn what he didn't know about the japanese culture and their understanding of names
- while he believed the word of the internet and all of his sources, he felt like this kind of thing was better to consult a person who grew up in this society would be
- so he asked you, one of his best friends, about it
- you explained to him that first names were reserved for people you were close with
- and that honorifics showed respect for those of higher positions, age, or others
- he had asked a ton of questions that night, pretty amazed at how much knowledge you possessed on the subject and how well you presented it
- after that, he would come to you whenever he had a question about the japanese society that he didn't understand
- which was pretty often tbh he's an inquisitive boy
- after a few months of talking to you almost daily, he started to feel weird, like his circuits were heating up
- even though he knew it was irrational, he wanted to spend as much time as possible with you
- he wanted,, to be closer to you
- he consulted miu with this question, purely because she was the ult inventor after all
- she told him that he was catching feelings
-,,in miu's own way, but it was understandable
- he was a little surprised afterwords
- he was,, romantically attracted to you ? that's surprising
- he had to tell you, in a way he knew you would appreciate
- he texted you to meet him at the park immediately after his meeting with miu, and waited there for you to arrive
- when he saw you, he jumped out of the bench he was sitting at
- keebo : " s / o ! i have come to a startling conclusion, and i want you to listen to me for a moment. "
- you flushed up, telling yourself that he just forgot how last names work in japan.
- s / o : " ah, i'm listening senpai. "
- keebo : " i want to call you by your first name instead of l / n-san. if you,, if you want. "
- oh, he didn't just forget,,
- s / o : " that's pretty bold, senpai. and a little unexpected. "
- his gaze was unfaltering, watching you with expectation as he gathered his next sentence.
- keebo : " will you accept this change ? "
- s / o : " yeah. yeah, i do, keebo. "
[ F U Y U H I K O ]
- he really didn't give a shit about respect or anything like that
- of course, he never really used last names, either
- most of the times, he just called a person a curse word to refer to them
- well, that is most of the time
- and then you came by into his life, and he forgot all about that act of his
- he was never prim and proper, but he was respectful to you, which meant a lot coming from a guy who likes his persona of an asshole
- mainly, he followed your lead
- if you would call him a nickname, he had a nickname for you
- if you called him by his last name, he would call you by your last name
- but the thing is, you never went past the respectful way of referring to him
- so all of these nicknames and playful things he had prepared to call you were completely useless
- unless  you decided you wanted to be closer than just respectful friends
- if he did it, he felt like he was just going to sound like his usual asshole self and you wouldn't think much of it
- or worse
- you'd think less of him, and that's something he does not want
- so he waited
- and waited
- and waited
- until he literally could not wait anymore
- he paced back and forth in his bedroom, peko barely paying attention to him as she read her book
- fuyuhiko : " how do i show that bi-i, uh, l / n-san,, , that i want to be more than just typical friends with them ? "
- peko : " have you tried asking them ? "
- fuyuhiko : " asking them what ? "
- peko : " to call you by your first name and not your family name. have you tried that ? "
- fuyuhiko : " ,, peko, you are a genius ! "
- peko : " i know i am. "
- even though he was getting frustrated with the situation, it still took him nearly a week to get the courage to ask you
- and even then, it was only because it was the heat of the moment
- you'd been playing with him the entire day, poking his cheek or his shoulder and whispering " kuzuryu-kun, pay attention to meee "
- s / o, while poking his cheek : " kuzuryu-kun, kuzuryu-kun, kuzuryu-kun, kuzu- "
- fuyuhiko : " i'll pay attention to you if you call me by my name, geez ! it's annoying to hear you say " kuzuryu-kun " so often. "
- you stopped in your tracks for a moment, your face incredibly red and nervous.
- and then
- s / o : " fuyuhiko, fuyuhiko, fuyuhiko, fuyuhiko, fuyuhi- "
- ah, yes, true love
[ K I Y O T A K A ]
- he upheld standards really well
- okay, maybe not just " really well "
- he lives nearly every day of his life adhering to the rules, both of society and school
- so he took stuff like that very seriously
- in fact, you two knew each other for more than a year before he even started to get the idea of changing from just polite friends to closer than such
- the idea came to him while he was talking to you at the library
- taka : " ah, i think cereal is the most adequate food to eat for breakfast, what do you think s / - i mean ! l / n -san ! "
- you had flushed up red immediately, but not nearly as red as he was
- he could not believe that he almost screwed up like that, seriously
- both you and him pretended like that little slip up never happened for the entire time at the library
- and for the next week, it was back to normal
- well, as normal as it was going to get at hope's peak academy
- until one night, you finally texted him
- it was completely out of the blue at nearly nine pm, just barely an hour before he went to sleep
- s / o : " hey, remember that day at the library ? "
- he almost threw his phone, oh gosh darnit
- taka : " yeah, sure do. what's this about suddenly ? "
- s / o : " well, i just wanted to know,,, why did you almost call me by my given name ? "
- taka : " i was not thinking ! i apologize if i overstepped my boundaries, l / n-san ! "
- s / o : " no, just checking. well, its getting late, i should be going to sleep. goodnight kiyotaka. "
- after reading that text nearly a million times
- he finally came to the conclusion that yes, indeed, you did say that
-  and now he had to do something about it
- at school the next day, while walking to his locker, he saw you reading your textbook to get an early start for your language class
- taka : " hey, l / n-san !"
- s / o : " oh, ishimaru-kun ! hi ! "
- he sat down beside you on the bench, reading your book slightly
- taka : " i have a favor to ask of you ! please, refer to me as kiyotaka ! in the same context, i will refer to you as s / o ! ,,, if that is acceptable ? "
- s / o : " ah ! i can do that, kiyo ! "
- taka : " now, let's get to class, i don't want to be late. "
- s / o : " we have ten minutes before class starts. "
[ I Z U R U ]
- listen, i know the request said " shy boys " but izuru just got stuck in my head and wouldn't let me write this without writing him, so here he is
- first things first that he does not care about being proper
- literally, it mattered zero to him
- however, he still stuck to calling everyone [ last name ]-san, purely because he didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea about him or any of his friends that he talked to on a daily basis
- one time that happened with chiaki where a rumor was being spread that he was in a romantic relationship with her and she almost killed him on the spot upon learning of it
- he doesn't fear death, but he fears chiaki
- just a little bit tho
- so while it didn't matter to him, he still got used to saying it
- however, when you joined the group, he wanted to call you by simpler terms for a different reason
- he spent a long time trying to figure out what was wrong with him when he talked to you
- he would feel his face heat up, and it was significantly harder to think of words to say when you were around, even if he wasn't directly talking to you
- and dear god don't get near him or he felt like he was going to combust
- what the fuck were these feelings ?
- even though he was a mess inside, he kept it calm and rational to everyone else
- and by that, i mean he looked like he always did, uncaring about everything in the universe
- since he always seemed like he didn't care, you were known for messing around with him, or more specifically - his hair
- brushing his hair and braiding it seemed to be your favorite pastime
- during lunch, you would sit on the table while he sat down on the bench, and would just brush away with your soft pastel purple brush
- whenever you would, it took everything out of him not to curse at you for,,,
- he didn't know really why he felt like cursing at you
- there were just a lot of feelings in one body, something he wasn't used to
- one day was going very well
- you were idly talking between chiaki and nagito while brushing izuru's hair
- hajime was somewhere, probably retaking a test because he failed his exam last time
- you were humming, trying to pull all of his hair into a ponytail so you could make a few braids in it
- s / o : " kamukura-kun, can you push your hair from your face, i can't reach it - "
- izuru : " must you always play with my hair, s / o ? "
- s / o : " huh ? oh, yeah. yeah, it's kind of mandatory, kamukura-kun. "
- izuru : " my name is izuru. "
- wait, what was he saying ?
- s / o : " k-kamukura-kun,, , "
- izuru : " izuru. "
- you two went back and forth until you finally gave up, giving into his requests
- s / o : " geez, you're so,, ugh ! why do you have to have such nice hair izuru ? "

Liam meets with Luka again and learns a bit more about the other werewolf pack. The friendship is blossoming.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Thank you for dropping me off." Liam climbed out of the passenger seat of Savannah's car and closed the passenger door behind him. "Don't forget to text me!" The blonde yelled through the open window before she reversed her car. Liam waved at her and watched her drive away before he finally made his way to the front door of his house. Luka, Savannah, Maddie, and he had sat together in the bar and talked for a while until they all had to disperse in different directions. Maddie and Luka had matters to attend to in regards to business and coven, Savannah had plans with her friends later on but offered to drop Liam off. He had gladly accepted her offer since it saved him from riding the bus during summer. Would Theo or someone else had come to get Liam? Absolutely but his Betas were not his chauffeurs.
Liam unlocked the door now and stepped into the house. He heard the tv running, the bass of Mike's music coming from downstairs. As always, it filled Liam with the undeniable feeling of home and happiness. Here he belonged. He hung his keys up and walked further into the house. Theo and Mason lounged on the opposite ends of the couch; Theo with a book in his hand and Mason with his notebook. Corey sat in front of the couch table and solved a puzzle. Tim sat in one of the chairs and watched tv. "Hey, you're back." Mason checked his watch. "Way later than I expected you to be. So it was good?" The others stopped what they were doing and turned to Liam. Tim even muted the series he had been watching. "Mixed, I would say." Liam kissed Theo and then sat next to his mate. Theo licked his lips. "Have you've been drinking lemon shots?" "I'm concerned how you got that from just one kiss", Liam remarked. Then he decided to answer Mason's question. "First of, those Alphas really think they're something else. Something I'm not. I don't have enough millions in my bank account to ever have them accept me." "That bad? I'm sorry." Corey grimaced. His parents were like that as well and he despised them for it. "Most of them, yeah. But I met three people who are very cool. First of, Mase, were cheetahs and vampire are a thing." Mason squeaked and pushed his notebook out of the way. "Tell me everything!" "The hotel had such old Hollywood glam style. Not my chic but whatever. First I met Savannah. She's the cheetah. Alpha of a very small pack here in Seattle. Outgoing, very direct, and honest. She talked to me before I even entered the meeting room. Was her first time too. We kind of stuck together. Then we met Meadow, the vampire. She has been to meetings before but she does not like the Alphas. She has a human best friend and told me he also has some notes about the supernatural community. I invited the two of them here cause I thought you and him could maybe check your notes, combine them so to speak. He surely will have things you don't have and vice versa, Mason and Corey." "Great idea." Corey helped Mason with the Bestiary and he would also profit from meeting Asher. If Asher wanted to follow the invitation. Maddie had said it would not be a problem but Liam would wait for clarification from Asher himself. "You said you met three people. Who's the third?" Theo asked. "Luka. He's the only other cool werewolf I met. Also older than us but his pack is from around. They're more modern and open-minded. Like ours is." "Sounds good. All in all, it seemed as if the meeting wasn't for nothing." Mason smiled. "And vampires. Wait! How was she there? Can she walk in the sun? Did the other Alphas wrangle her into the hotel? Is she traveling in a coffin? Did she try to drink your blood? What was she like??" "Jesus, Mason." Corey shook his head. But Liam gladly answered every question his Emissary had. "I'll stay in contact with them", he finally ended and his mate, as well as Consultant and Emissary, voiced their agreement. "Liam?" Tim said shyly. "Didn't you put up a rule of not having strangers come to the house? When you said you invited the vampire and her friend here, are you not breaking your own rule?"
Shit. Oh shit.
Liam had completely forgotten about that rule. Yes, he had told his Betas not to bring strangers into their new home. And here he was breaking his very own rule. Great, Dunbar! "No...I mean...yeah, I did....But...." Tim got up to leave the room. "I mean, you're the Alpha and therefore it's your decision. You can do whatever you want. I just remembered the rule." He gave an insecure shrug and then left the room in the direction of his room. Liam huffed. "You forgot you had put the rule in place, right?" Theo guessed. "Yep." Liam closed his eyes for a moment and scolded himself mentally. Idiot! Idiot! Idiot! "I mean, you are the Alpha. We can still follow the rules but what you do is up to you", Corey suggested softly. Liam's eyes snapped open. "No!" He said sharply. "We're not running a pack like that! If rules are in place, we all have to follow them. Including me. Especially me." "Then you have to decide what to do with that situation. You could always meet with Meadow and her friend somewhere else", Mason suggested. "No. The rule made sense back then but not it's not feasible anymore. And I will tell Tim that."
The young Alpha got up from the couch and marched downstairs to his Beta's room. He knocked, waited a few moments, then opened the door. Liam peeked into the room. "Hey. Have a minute?" Tim had sat on his desk and now spun around in his chair, a mixture of shock and surprise written on his face. But then he caught himself and nodded. Liam walked in and closed the door behind him. "You can sit on the bed if you want." Tim pointed at said furniture piece and Liam sat down on the edge. He rubbed his palms over his thighs. "You're right. I set this rule and I completely and utterly forgot about it. Had you not said anything, it would have left my mind forever. I am sorry about that." "It's okay. As I said, you're the Alpha. You make the rules, you sure can break the rules." Tim tried his best to give off the impression it was really okay. But Liam was stubborn. "It's not okay", he stated calmly. "When I set the rule, it seemed reasonable to me and came from a place of being worried about everyone and our home. I wanted to be absolutely sure nothing could get to us. That was weeks ago. I should have kept it in mind and change it again after Ever cast the spell and we were more secure. I didn't. I fucked up and I am sorry about that." Tim opened his mouth to protest but Liam was faster: "I am grateful for you guys calling me out. Tim, you're my friend, my family, my Beta. You and the others absolutely should call me out when I do something wrong. I'm not perfect and I will make these mistakes. But only with this echo from you, I can improve and become a better leader. I'm not mad at you and you don't have to be afraid to speak up. This rule was okay back then but now is not anymore. Therefore I cut it. Gone! Just like that! thank you for bringing this up. I mean it. But what will never happen is that I set rules for you and then don't follow them myself. This is not the type of leader I wanna be. Okay?" Tim gnawed on his lip. "I would not care so much but this is the first house I am not judged and ridiculed in. I can be myself and I want to protect it as much as I can", he confessed. "So do I, Timmy", Liam promised him. "I would never let anyone in here I might consider not fully trustworthy." Tim considered. "So you trust Meadow and her friend?" "I do, yeah." Liam nodded. "Do you consider them good allies for the pack?" The twenty-year-old had to laugh. "My brain's not wired like that." Liam played with his hands. "Theo is good at that, Mason too. But I don't think strategically. On the lacrosse field, yeah, that's my jam, but not when it comes to people. I meet a person and I either like or dislike them. Maybe I trust too easy and maybe I will make a fool out of myself but then I have to take responsibility for it. I can't, I don't want to meet someone and be like Your name is what? Oh, you will be a splendid ally to my pack. This is not me and I will probably never get there. Hence why I keep Theo around", he joked at the end. Tim chuckled but then sighed. "I know what you mean. I'm not like that either. It would feel...I don't know...like..." They both thought about it. "Like using someone", they both finally said at the same time and this time they both laugh. "Mike is good at it too. To easily find out how people can be useful to him upon meeting them." "Maybe it's a survival tactic", Liam put out a theory. "How can you help me in my current situation to get a better stand and survive. Would explain why Theo is so good at it. He and Mike both needed to survive in a world that didn't want them." Tim raised his shoulders. "My survival tactic is not being seen or heard. Not draw any attention." "Well, I hope you don't feel like that anymore in the house or around the pack in general." Liam sounded like a father, he realized that himself. But wasn't an Alpha supposed to be a father sometimes? Tim shook his head. "Not always. But it's hard to unlearn what I learned for nineteen years. You know, you guys are great! You make me feel welcome! Don't think anybody else, please!"
He moved his hands around and knocked over a small can filled with brushes of all kinds. They clattered to the floor. Liam knelt and helped him pick them up again. "Didn't know you were painting, Timmy. Those are many brushes." His Beta turned a concerning shade of red and stuttered. "I...No...Not...Irgs. I don't paint! Pictures! I don't paint pictures!" "Then what do you paint?" Liam had never seen Tim being creative with brushes in any shape or form. From how his friend acted, one would think he was doing forbidden things with those brushes. "You don't have to tell me, of course. I'm just curious." You could basically see Tim's thought process on his face. Denial, fear, nervousness, fear again, shame. Finally, he pointed to the other side of the room. There was a large board with something tiny on it. Curiosity got the better of Liam and he stepped closer. Tiny little figurines were placed all over the board, along with trees, and various other little things. There was even a tiny truck looking amazingly similar to Theo's truck. And there was a car looking like Liam's. Wait a second. "Are those figurines of the pack?" Tim rushed next to Liam. "I can stop with that if you think it's weird. It's just, I like making those little scenes and take inspiration from real life." He gently pushed a tiny figurine in a blue jersey. A tiny Liam in lacrosse gear, Liam realized. "You've got to be kidding me! This is awesome! Can I touch it?" Liam was in awe. Tim blushed furiously but then gently placed lacrosse Liam on Liam's palm. The young Alpha turned the figurine to inspect it from all sides. For such a small thing, the details were incredibly detailed. "I make the figurines from a special clay and then I paint them. I hope you don't think it's weird. I am sorry if you do. I'm not a creep, I promise!" Tim almost stumbled over his words in his haste to get them out. "You make them? This is incredible, Tim! Why did you never show us this? That's not creepy or weird, this is fucking amazing! You're crazy talented." Liam could not stop praising the guy. And Tim beamed under the praise. Once he realized Liam did not find anything weird about that and actually loved it, he preened. "Does anybody in the pack know you're doing this?" "Mike knows." Tim smiled shyly. "But I made him swear he wouldn't tell a soul. Made him swear on something important to him." "Uh uh. What did he swear on?" Now Tim blushed again. "Our friendship." "Aw." Those two were cute and deserved each other. Mike because he needed a calm anchor in his life, Tim because he needed someone to speak up when he couldn't himself. "But seriously, Timmy, those are cool. I'm not going to say anything but if you ever want to share with the rest, I can already assure you, they will be as amazed as I was. It's a really cool hobby. I imagine it takes a lot of time?" "Oh, it does. But I like to modulate all the figurines and then paint them. It's calm work and I can think while doing it." Tim began chatting about his hobby. Now that Liam knew it seemed like a dam had burst and he could share it with the Alpha. Liam willingly listened.
****** "I'm glad you could clear the air with Tim." Theo pulled the covers back and crawled in bed. Liam was already under the covers and had scrolled through his phone but now put the device away to concentrate on the talk with his mate. "I'm glad too. It is important to me to get those kinds of replies so I can reflect on myself. I'm not doing everything right. But I'm working on it." "You're doing a lot of things already right. The things you're not doing right, well they partly make you Liam. Not perfect but human and very loveable." "How were you ever the chimera of death?" Liam teased and Theo smacked him with his pillow. Liam laughed. "I am trying here to compliment you and you do not appreciate it? You should be ashamed of yourself!" Theo wailed. Liam laughed louder. "Naw, you will survive that one, big boy. You know I love you." To prove it, he pressed his mate down on the mattress and kissed him passionately. Theo laughed into the kiss but returned it soon enough. "I know you love me", he mumbled after they parted. "And I love you, Lee." Liam was proud to hear that and he smirked. His phone chimed and he let go of Theo to grab it. "It's from Luka. He's asking if I want to meet up sometime next week. Cool." Liam already typed an answer. "You really like the three, right?" Theo mused. Liam looked up from his phone screen. Theo was watching him with questioning eyes but there was no sign of jealousy as he had shown with Scott in the beginning. He sighed. "I do. It's strange. They're all older than me and yet they never acted like they had to explain the world to me. Never a patronizing word, never telling me I'm still so young. I was just Liam and from the get-go, I was part of this little gang. I didn't have to prove myself to them. Because it felt like I had already proved myself prior to meeting them and they didn't even care. It was nice. I wasn't...." "You weren't the fourteen-year-old?" Theo asked amusedly and yet with compassion. "Yeah", Liam confirmed. "I wasn't even Liam the twenty-year-old. I was just...Liam." He fell silent for a few beats. "Doesn't mean I will leave you guys behind. You're my family." "Nobody's thinking that!" Theo furrowed his brows. "If we did, we would be bad friends and family members. We all are individuals outside of this pack and we all will make friendships without the pack being involved. If not, we would be one lousy pack. What we are is, happy you found people appreciating you and liking you for who you are." He reached out and pushed Liam's chin up so the couple looked at each other. "Liam, you have so many things going on for you. Your age shouldn't be one of the first things to notice." It was still strange to hear those things with such sincerity and Liam swallowed dryly. "What's the first thing?" He asked softly. Theo smiled lovingly. "Your good heart. And your eyes. Not because of their color - even though it's a beautiful color - but because they shine with such honesty and happiness." They stared at each other, Liam lost for words. He found his voice only after moments passed. "Were you always that poetic?" "You bring out the best in me", the ex-chimera replied and then kissed Liam deeply.
****** "Not to be pessimistic or something but would it not have been better to plant the flowers after the heatwave?" Liam stood in the open front door and watched Brett watering their plants. Nope", the tall werewolf replied and carried on with his task. "Because?" "Because I wanted to do it now", Brett simply answered. He gave Liam a cheeky grin. "That's reason enough." "Why would I ever doubt that?" Liam remarked teasingly. "Careful before I water you. You could use some growing", Brett teased back. The next moment, he was distracted by the red convertible oldtimer rolling into their driveway. The car was highly polished, not one speck of dirt to be seen, and it was sparkling in the sun. "Holy crap, that is awesome." Brett didn't even realize he was watering the ground instead of the plants, too busy staring at the car. It stopped in front of the entrance and Luka in the driver seat smirked. "Hi." "Hi." Liam laughed. "Nice car." "It's the pack car when one of us wants to go for a nice ride. Holden, a pack member, resto moded it but he lends it to everyone. Thought it's a nice day, why not take it?" He took off his sunglasses and seemed quite proud of his Beta's skills. Liam had no interest in cars but it was a pretty one and why not? He had no objections to driving around in this. Mike and Theo came out of the house. "Dude, that car is sick!" Mike jumped down the stairs and rounded it. Luka preened. "I'll forward it to Holden." Theo was also circling the car, as amazed by it as Mike and Brett were. Liam could only shake his head. Who knew those guys were such car freaks? "Luka, that one over there is Brett and that guy there is Mike. And that is Theo." "Nice to meet you." Theo was the only one to actually shake Luka's hand, the other two simply waved and then continued to fawn over the car. "Nice to meet you too", Luka replied. "You're Liam's boyfriend, right?" "I am", Theo proudly confirmed. "Bring him back in one piece." "I swear on my life", Luka promised in a playful serious tone. Liam grunted. "I can hear you guys! Theo, maybe I won't bring Luka back in one piece. How about that?" "As long as you bring the car back in one piece!" Mike cut in and made them all laugh. "Okay, now that some of my Betas embarrassed me in front of you, I'll get my sunglasses and we can go", Liam called out to the older Alpha and ran into the house and upstairs.
It took him a little while to find his sunglasses (he really needed to try and be tidier) but when he found them under some papers, Liam let out a triumphant cry and ran back downstairs. His Betas were involved in a conversation with Luka (surprisingly not about cars) which Liam now interrupted. "I'm ready." "Great. Hop in." Liam opened the passenger door and marveled at how smooth this was going. He somehow expected the door to get stuck because of age. But this car looked and felt like a brand new one. "See you guys later. Don't burn the house down", he joked. "Yes, dad!" All three Betas chimed in unison. Theo smirked and came to the passenger side to give Liam a quick kiss. "Have fun", he mumbled and Liam nodded. "Bye, guys. See you next time!" Luka called out before he started the car and soon they rolled down the driveway.
"You're one of the few people in this car to use the seatbelt immediately", he informed Liam when he turned into the street. The young Alpha looked down. "I do this in every car. My mother drilled this into me from a young age. I could not drive in a car without buckling up." "My mom was like that too. She always said just because were werewolves didn't mean we had to challenge fate. And she got mad if she saw one of us without a seatbelt on. Not just her own kids but basically everyone. There is a story where she refused to drive another Alpha's wife to the airport because the lady refused to put hers on. It's said they sat in the car for forty minutes until my dad went looking for them." Liam started laughing. "That's dedication. It's that the temper you were talking about?" Now Luka laughed. "My mom was stubborn. I'm too. And my sister is as well. Fun times during puberty, I can tell you. Good thing my dad was good at finding middle ground." "Your parents seemed like an amazing couple. Their personalities really matched with each other, from what I already heard." He wanted to know more about his new friend. And Liam wanted to share things about himself as well. He believed Savannah was right, this could become great friendships. "They were the perfect match even though their personalities were as different as they can be. But they balanced each other out. They were incredible Alphas for our pack." "You say Alphas. Were both real Alphas? Or just an Alpha couple?" Luka stopped at a crosswalk and let some pedestrians pass. "Technically, if you base it on red eyes and stamina, my father was the Alpha. My mother was a Beta but no one would have dared to treat her like one. Or like she was just dad's wife and mate. The way she cared for her pack, the way she made decisions, the way she spoke, she was an Alpha. There is so much more to an Alpha than red eyes. It's all about behavior and the relationship to the pack members." "I don't base it on the red eyes. Theo, he's also a Beta, but we call him Second Alpha. He takes over if I can't. We're the Alpha couple. Why should the color of somebody's eyes define their role?" Luka agreed with Liam's point of view. "There are some packs without an Alpha with red eyes. One Beta is in charge and guides them." "I didn't know that, that's awesome. But wouldn't that be an Alpha by conquest in the long run?" "Depends on how serious the pack takes it. Not all packs are focused on Alpha and Betas, some are more lenient. There are so many kinds of packs. Not just different species but different versions. There are also many Alpha Omegas around." "Alphas without a pack? So wolves with the Alpha spark." "Yeah." "Huh." Liam had never considered that. To him, Omegas had always been those wolves. With normal wolf powers. What were normal wolf powers? Betas? Liam guessed so. He never bothered to really make a distinction or think about what exactly Omegas were. "I kind of don't know a lot about the supernatural. I know how to fight and about several evil beings but all those connections between weres, species, what other magical beings are there, rituals, I know nothing about." Luka didn't take it badly. "At what age were you bitten?" "Fourteen." "You're twenty now. Which means I'm twelve years older than you. Trust and believe me when I tell you I didn't know that much more when I was your age. Plus I have the unfair advantage of being born in a werewolf family." He smiled impishly. Liam grinned. Yet he still insisted on his opinion. "I still think the first few years as a werewolf did not prepare me for that."
Thus he found himself telling Luka everything, from how Scott bit him to the hyenas. It was somewhat therapeutic to talk about all this with another wolf without knowing him beforehand. He didn't need to find periphrases for things, could tell it how it happened and didn't need to sugarcoat the events. He also could be as open as possible without having to worry about insulting some old friends. It had been the same with Byron.
He talked until they parked in the parking lot of the restaurant they had picked to grab something to eat. Liam didn't know the place but according to Luka it had delicious food and you could sit outside under trees so it would not be too hot. "See? That's the reason why teenagers shouldn't become Alphas", Luka said matter of factly and killed the engine. "I don't mean this condescendingly but it is what it is. Maybe if Scott had been a born werewolf it would have been different but I understand why this was all complicated. And why you didn't learn about the supernatural community. You had enough other problems to take care of." "I just wished I could have learned more. Maybe being an Alpha would be easier then", Liam mumbled. "Nah." Luka denied. "Becoming an Alpha does not mean you suddenly get access to this knowledge. It's not like a hatch opens and it's flowing into your brain. You have to make mistakes to find your footing as an Alpha." He unbuckled his seatbelt. "I was prepared to become an Alpha after my father's death for years. It could have become anybody in the pack but since I'm the oldest it was kind of expected for me to take over afterward. But it's not possible to really prepare someone for the weight we shoulder as Alphas. For the magnitude of responsibility settling in. It's something we just feel. And every Alpha has to find their own way to cope with that." Liam frowned. "How do I know I'm doing the right thing then?" Luka gave him a brotherly nudge. "I'd say you're on a good way already. When the first Alpha came to town, your Betas followed you into a potentially deadly fight. They were willing to die by your side. That's a type of loyalty you cannot buy or blackmail. It's loyalty coming from the soul and the heart. And it's only happening because an Alpha made the right decision for those Betas. You're young, Liam, one of the youngest Alphas I've ever met but you marched into the Alpha meeting without a care in the world. Do you think any of those Alphas would have done that at the age of twenty? From my point of view, you're doing absolutely great. Don't focus so much on being perfect and rather follow your heart and gut and you're set. You will be fine." It felt good to hear that. Byron told him that often enough but now a second experienced werewolf told Liam the same thing. He felt flattered. Those men saw him as equal, not just as a teenager. Saw eye-to-eye with him and respected him the same way he respected them. Enough to give Liam a soaring feeling in his chest. "Thanks." He clapped Luka's shoulder. "No come on, I'm hungry."
They exited the car and walked to the restaurant entrance. The hostess greeted them with a friendly smile and an even friendlier one when she got the first good glance at Luka. Liam was friends with Brett so this was not new to him. He was flabbergasted still. "How do you do that?" He had to inquire once they sat outside on their table and the hostess left to get menus for them. "Do what?" Luka acted innocently but his grin and the sparkle in his eyes betrayed him. The hostess came back and made a show to slowly put the menus on the table. She didn't pay Liam any mind and that was fine, he was mated, instead just gave Luka a coy smile. "Don't hesitate to ask me in case you need anything." "Will do. Thank you", he repaid her with a charming smile of his own and she left in a slow, seductive motion. On top of the menus, she left a little note with digits behind. "You barely talked to her and still got her number. Brett managed to pull this off as well. How? Not that I will ever need to try since I have Theo but how the fuck do you pull that off?" Liam could not find any satisfying explanation. Luka had gazed back at the hostess but now his head snapped back. "Luck, I guess. And charm, maybe." "Maybe, uh uh." Liam snickered. Luka had a certain boyish charm about him and that made him attractive. Not taking life too seriously, giving everything an easier vibe. Liam also understood the hostess because the deep green t-shirt Luka was wearing brought out his eyes nicely and accentuated his fit body perfectly. "I like sex. What can I say? Everywhere. No matter what country I am." Luka was not embarrassed to share this. "Have you always been like this?" "Frankly? Yeah. I always liked to flirt and when I was old enough to actually become sexually active, I saw no harm in there. I don't play. That's how my parents raised me. My mother always said: Go and have fun with whoever you want to have fun. But don't break hearts if you don't have to. Be upfront. If it's just sex, say it. Saves you and other people heartbreak. I always followed that. Yes, I had relationships but most of the time I have been single and had one-night-stands. Or several night stands. Whatever. The minute I'm interested in someone or in a relationship, I'm faithful. I can't stand cheaters." "That's the right answer. Sex is nice, with the right person even better, but I don't like players. Nice to hear someone having values."
Liam took a look inside the menu. Right on cue, a waiter appeared. "Hello gentlemen, I'm your server for today. Would you care for a drink?" The Alphas looked at each other. "Just water is fine for me", Liam decided. It was hot, despite the trees providing shade, and he would become thirsty, he knew himself. "Water is good", Luka decided himself and the waiter went to fetch their drinks. "You said no matter what country you are in. Are you traveling a lot?" Liam had picked up on that. "For work yeah." "What are you doing for a living?" "I deal in car parts for either oldtimer or pimped-out cars. Like the convertible. Holden is the mechanic, we work together. He screws the cars together, I contract the clients and the manufacturers. We have business all over the world since some of the parts are very rare. So I traveled a lot. For periods of time, I wasn't home for months. I never had my own apartment because it made no sense to pay for something I used. Tried it once and after weeks my landlord called and said he just wanted to check if I was still alive since I never came around. So I moved out again and if I stayed home, I stayed with the Alphas." "And that was okay? For you to be gone so long?" "My parents ket an open door policy. If something important came up, they called us home but aside from that, we were free to leave as long as we wanted. We knew we could always return to the pack house. No matter how late, even in the middle of the night, we were always welcome. We all made use of that rule over the years."
The waiter brought their drinks and took their order. When he left the two alone again, Liam raised his glass. "Good idea to meet up again", he praised. "Well, Savannah said it right, it's the beginning of wonderful friendships. So of course." Luka smiled and they clinked their glasses together. Liam took a sip. Perfect, cool water, he never drank anything better. He put his glass down again and savored the sip. "Uhm, I never got the chance to ask. How many Betas do you have? We're only talking about me." "I don't mind. You're good at telling a story and explaining things. Somebody ever told you that?" Luka had put his glass down as well. Liam made an incredulous face. "No. What would they? I'm kind of dumb." It had slipped out faster than Liam could have stopped it. Luka's frown was almost instantly. "What asshole told you that?" "No one. Life experience, if you will. I'm not the brightest." "You don't have to be a genius but you really don't appear dumb, Liam. Don't believe it when people tell you that. They're just haters." It had the same vibe as a worried older brother giving a stern talking to his younger sibling and Liam chuckled. He was a big brother but not a little brother and yeah he called Scott his brother sometimes but that was different. Maybe because Scott was only two years older than Liam himself. They came from the same walk of life, small town, maybe that was also a factor? Liam could not really put his finger on it but it hit differently with Luka. "Okay", he said to end this topic. "I will remember this talk." "Good", Luka looked stern but then he smiled. "To get back to the question, seven Betas. A few less than you have." He leaned back in his chair. "There is my younger sister Delaney. Younger by three years. An absolute firecracker. If she gets angry, if you piss her off, she will cuss at you and rant for hours if you let her. Especially in the background of a phone conversation. Very entertaining, if I'm being honest." Luka laughed. But the love for his sister was evident in his words. "Then there is Simon. He is...was dad's best friend. They've been to school and college together and he acted like some sort of advisor for the pack. Helped with international deals and connections. He's my godfather and like a second dad. I'm happy I still have him after I lost dad. It doesn't bear contemplating if he would have been also gone..." Luka trailed off. Liam managed a compassionate smile. "I am sorry for your loss. Losing somebody we love is never easy." He touched his collar bone where the Lion King tattoo was hidden under his shirt. Luka appreciated the sentiment. He continued his list on a lighter note. "With Simon came Holden, his son. Holden's just a few months younger than I am, we grew up together." "Holden's mom is not part of the pack?" "No. She never wanted to get married or have kids. Yet she married Simon and got pregnant with Holden. Weeks after his birth she handed Simon the infant and announced: I don't want to be a wife or a mother. Here's the child, I'll leave your life for good. He does not have to search for me, I want nothing to do with any of you. My lawyer will send you the documents where I signed my rights away and the divorce papers. Got her suitcase and left. From that moment on, mom and dad gave a hand to Simon. Holt and I basically grew up like brothers. He annoys Delaney the same way I do." Liam giggled. "Are younger siblings not something fun? I have a younger brother. He's ten but living at the lake." "Aw, they're so cute at that age. And then they start stating their own opinions and become brats." It was obvious Luka didn't mean a thing he said about his sister. They both began to laugh. "Holden's a great guy but he can be a hothead. Impulsive and very brash. Those are not his finest moments and we have to hold him back. But he's fiercely protective of the pack. Would do anything for us. Another one of my Betas is Sandro. Alessandro. My second in command. We met during freshmen orientation in college and clicked almost instantly. Have been inseparable ever since. When I brought him home the first time, mom looked at dad and said: Look, it's Luka in another body. Our parents often joked how they could each take the wrong son home and nobody would notice cause we're so similar. It's eerie. "
Their food came out and they interrupted their talk to thank the waiter and dig in before Luka resumed talking. "Sandro was human when we met but after a while, he noticed my family was hiding something. He confronted me and after consulting with my Alphas I came clean to him. Thank god cause when he was twenty-five, he go involved with a lone Alpha and said Alpha got a bit too excited in bed. Right before a full moon. Sandro showed up at our doorstep, bloodied and already on the verge of transforming. Dad took one look at him and dragged him to the basement where we keep a cage for those things.  I stayed with him the whole night and after that, it was more or less clear he would become part of the pack. Sandro helped me a lot after my parents' death. He took charge when I couldn't do it and held the pack together. That's why he became my second in command, just like Theo is for you." Luka drank from his water. "We have two other women in the pack. Bryn and Lynn. Laugh if you want, their rhyming names are a running joke in our pack. Bryn I know for almost her whole life. How fit are you in werewolf genetics?" Liam snorted. "That a thing? I'd give it a solid zero." "To keep it simple: The werewolf gene is dominant most of the time. Werewolf parents will have werewolf children. Even if only one parent is a wolf, the child likely will be one as well. The chances are even higher by born wolves rather than bitten ones. But if you have several generations of werewolves mixing with humans there is a slight possibility to have a human child even as werewolf parents. In Bryn's family case it was the opposite. There had been some wolves here and there, some of them had been in contact with my father's pack, but for generations, there were only humans. Until Bryn was born. Boom. Human parents with a werewolf baby." "You're kidding me!" Liam was amazed at how crazy nature could get. "Absolutely not. But her family knew about werewolves and so they knew the name of my father's pack. They grabbed their daughter and moved closer to us, showed up at our door, and kindly asked my parents to help them. To make having yet another child running around somewhat plausible, we started calling Bryn Delany's and my second cousin. We kept this til this day and mostly refer to her as our cousin. Lynn, on the other hand, was bitten after a night of clubbing and then left to die. Mom found her somewhere in the ditch and brought her home. We were not sure she would survive but that girl is tough as nails. Don't underestimate her." "She reminds me of Sadie. One should never underestimate Sadie as well. She will kick your ass and probably gnaw on your bones without ruining her makeup." "Somehow that description also fits Maddie and Savannah", Luka realized. Liam had to agree with that. "Anyway, you said you had seven Betas. One's missing." "The latest addition to the pack before my parents died. Will. He's Sandro's cousin, full-blood-related this time. They have been close while growing up and he visited one time. This family is good at picking up things and he got curious. We never got to explain to him everything cause a hostile pack attacked and he was wounded badly. Dad turned him in an attempt to save his life. It worked and Will moved to live with us. Funny enough, he and Holden clicked almost as instantly as Sandro and I did. They just balance each other a bit better. Hopefully. One's a hothead, the other is too cocky for his own good sometimes. I think the day these two linked, Simon's world kinda ended. He had several gray hairs more after that day. Lynn once kept a tally which one had to get bailed out of jail more often..." Luka tilted his head. "Huh, wondered what happened to that. I think I was the third place..." Liam smirked and Luka gave him an innocent smile. "I mean, we are all law-abiding citizens and never do anything wrong. We stick together and love each other, as a family should." "So do we. My pack and I. They're my family and I don't want to miss anyone of them." "Tell you what, Liam, why don't you and you pack visit us? We could have a BBQ party. Next Friday, is that good?" "That's a great idea. I'll check with the pack and text you."

When I started this story, I imagined how many chapters this might will have and thought sixty was a good number. Now we are at chapter 60 and this story is far from over. I can't believe that. It's absolutely amazing and I want to thank every single one of my readers for the support. You all are amazing! Thank you!!!
In regards to this chapter, I like the friendship between Luka and Liam. They both are on the same wavelength and get each other. And it was fun working out Luka's Betas. In the next chapter, both packs will fully meet each other. I am excited.

Fandom and Fanfiction Galore
Ship It by Britta Lundin
Aaaaaalrighty...so this was written almost 3 years ago hot out of ClexaCon 2018 and it is...an interesting one. I had and still very much have feelings about this book. Would I write my thoughts the exact same way today as I did back then...probably not! So enjoy this bit of a pre-pandemic pre-a-whole-bunch-of-other-personal-stuff-y’all-don’t-need-to-know-about me talking about a book I still don’t really know how I feel about! Enjoy!
This was another book I found because of the Queering YA panel at ClexaCon 2018. Being able to talk to Britta at the booth after the panel was awesome, because you could tell talking with her that she was a true fan. She knew what being surrounded by fandom was like and it made me pretty excited to read the book.
Unicorn Rating:
Tumblr media
Blurb: Living in the environment of fandom can be an insane experience in both good and bad ways. This book delivered a unique experience and look into fandom culture that was surreal to read about outside of fanfiction and tumblr.
Disclaimer: I will try my best to not spoil anything from the book, but my book loving rambles may give more away than a traditional review. Here we go! Ramble time!
Review:
I would say overall this book felt a little weird for me. I didn’t absolutely love it but I also didn’t particularly dislike it. It fell in a very ‘meh’ place for me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have good things to say about it, they are just slightly confusing things.
The plot was actually one of the things I liked the most about it. Even though it was a crazy unrealistic plot, it helped capture the absolute lunacy of being a member of fandom culture perfectly. Sometimes being a fan is a simple life of surfing Tumblr and liking posts but sometimes the craziest things happen and change your life forever. In this case the reader is swept up in this craziness with Claire and the unrealistic aspect of it all made it feel more realistic as counterintuitive as that sounds. That is what the fandom experience can feel like at times, everything makes so little sense it actually circles back around to making sense, but enough about that...time for some character rambles.
Now we have two perspectives explored in this book. That of Claire, the fangirl, and Forest, the actor who has never had to deal with fangirls before. Let’s start with Claire. I am of two minds on her. Part of me really doesn’t like her, mostly because she is a person that in real life I probably wouldn’t spend time around and, as I’ve stated in a previous review, I have a hard time separating myself from characters and remembering that they are only teenagers. Multiple times I actually physically facepalmed, while reading a hardback book! That isn’t easy to do, but I did it, because she was doing things that just seemed so illogical from my perspective. But I am an adult, so of course I have a completely different perspective than a teen who is away from home and feeling a little out of control for a plethora of reasons. Now the other part of me really liked her, strangely enough for those exact same reasons, she was so real that I went full ‘Mom’ mode and wanted to sit her down and have a talk about what she was going through before she did something she was going to regret. Even if I found the character to be unlikeable the fact I was still on her side and wanted to help her really shows the depth that was written into her.
Now moving on to Forest. Oh, Forest. He was a character that I was very intrigued by at first because his was a perspective I, as a fangirl myself, had never seen in a book before, but damn if he didn’t make it so hard to like him. Some of the things he said and did made me want to throttle him. I could excuse some of the stuff Clarie did because of her age and the craziness of everything going on around her, but Forest is an adult and should know better. He would improve and his actions would start to win me over, but then he would overreact to something and make me want to put on my throttlin’ gloves again. I felt like that Tyra Banks ‘I was rooting for you!’ reaction gif while I was reading this multiple times. Again, though, there were parts that I was glad Forest called Claire out on her actions when it was called for, but overall they both needed an intervention to have them sit down and just chill for five seconds.
I actually genuinely liked a majority of the side characters in this as well. I actually have less of the weird mental confusion when it comes to the side characters. Rico was cute and great around the fans. Jamie was a total asshat but he was written to be that way to foil Claire in her mission to make ‘Smokeheart’ cannon. One of my favorite scenes in the whole book was actually between Claire and the social media consultant, whose name I totally remember and am just choosing not to put in because I think that’ll be all avant garde...okay fine I forgot her name and I am not digging the book out to find it. Anyway...I can’t really go into detail about the scene because, you know, spoilers but it was so well done in the context of the story.
Now for the last big character I want to speak on, the love interest, Tess. Now I really liked Tess and even understood how she wanted to keep her nerdy hobbies a secret from her small town friends. I was lucky that I grew up in a family and a circle of friends that let me embrace my passions no matter how off-the-wall they may seem to others. Tess obviously didn’t have that kind of support but she was still so passionate just privately. I will say though, ironically given the title of the book, I don’t ship it. Tess and Claire definitely share an instant attraction and the chemistry is there but they have so much growing to do before they are anywhere close to having an actual healthy functional relationship. Maybe if we saw more of them it would feel more compelling but it just wasn’t for me.
So my final thoughts on this book are just...a little discombobulated. Part of me was really happy to read a book that portrayed a part of my life that is so hard to put into words at times. I have never been a rabid fangirl, but after Lexa’s death I had to try and explain my utter devastation to people who just didn’t understand why a fictional character mattered to me so much. This book captures at least a layer of the fandom experience in a way that I’ve never seen before. The problem I have in the end though is how problematic everything that happens was, and then the ending just felt so sudden. We didn’t see any of the characters address their issues on the page. I hope this review made some coherent sense, because this book still doesn’t really make sense even in my brain, but I need to wrap this up now.
Queer Wrap-up: Okay, so, for our rep we have a questioning main character who definitely has some queer tendencies, but overall her realizing her feelings took such a back seat to her mission to make a fictional ship cannon on a show that was already filmed it took away from the rep as a whole. It just felt like the focus was so split that the actual rep gets lost in the pages. There is no argument by the end of the book that Claire is queer, which earns the three unicorns on that alone, but some of the tropes that played parts in the book were just so cringey that I couldn’t rationalize giving it more than that. Even with a couple side characters who were revealed to also be queer they weren’t enough to cover for the less stellar parts of this book.

Okay, so if you couldn’t tell by that train wreck of a review this book just confused me. It kept me just interested enough to pick it back up after I’d put it down, but also wasn’t that bad. It lives in a weird oxymoronic vortex in my brain that honestly gives me a headache if I focus on it too much. There were aspects of this book that I did genuinely like but it all gets swirled together with the parts that made me put it down and need to take a break. If any of you want to discuss those more spoiler-filled aspects please send an ask and I’ll welcome you into the cyclical nature of whatever this book is doing in my brain. And as always if you want to read this but don’t want to spend the money without knowing for sure you are going to like it, go to your local library. You’d be surprised what they have on their shelves just waiting to be discovered. Trust me, I’m a lesbrarian.

death bed (coffee for your head) by Powfu for Drastoria?
I know that music has all this super sad background and that you would probably expect me to make Astoria die, BUT, as I always say here, nothing in this world will make me leave another child in the universe of HP orphaned, so, everything ends well at the end of this one shoot. I took a long time to write, mainly because I wanted it to come out the way I wanted, and I think I came up with something similar to my head Sad stories and fights are still a hindrance for me to write, but I am improving Thank you for sending! I loved this suggestion <3
''Astoria, I love you so much, which is why I'm writing this.
Last night after what your father said, after everything they pointed out ... I cannot arrest you, I cannot condemn you that way. You deserve so much, much more than I can give you. I wanted to be the man who will give you a family, a son, who will see you come in white and be waiting for you to be able to say 'yes', but it's not me. Unfortunately. It sucks that we met in this life, when I'm just a monster, just like your dad pointed out. That's what I am, after all. You always made me very happy, never doubt it Astoria, being on your side made every minute worthwhile, and for a few days I even thought I could leave it all behind. But I can not. It just doesn't work. As much as you say my past doesn't define me ... it does, Tori, he made me like this, he made me have the fucking Dark Mark on my arm and I can't get you sick with this shit. Don't blame yourself or lose sleep over this, you have a bright future ahead and you deserve to live the best life ever. Thank you for seeing me a little bit of the life I could have had, but unfortunately that needs to end.
I wanted to be the man of your life, like you were the woman of mine.
I will love you forever and ever.
Forever Yours,
Draco Malfoy''
She wanted to throw up, cry and scream all at the same time, lying on the floor while sobbing, watching the paper tremble in her hands, and the ink getting more and more smudged with every drop that fell.
Draco left her
Before she could think, before could reason perfectly, she was leaving the room, running through Greengrass Mansion, jumping the steps and barely seeing the path had taken to her father's office, opening a door with all her might, exploding in all its fury before the man could defend himself;
''He ran-away! Are you happy now? After you said all the things ... all that bullshit! He was just a boy! Coerced and afraid of having their parents dead! He was never a murderer, he never did me any harm, and now, because of that shit of yours yesterday, he found it safer to leave.''
"Well, it looks like he hurt you now" The man shrugged, still stiff and looking indifferent, which irritated her even more
''What ... Draco thinks he's doing me a favor, that you were right, that ... DO I LOOK HAPPY?''
''Don't you see the ruin it would take you? What would it do to your reputation? No one else would look you in the face!’’ Astoria snorted irritably
''And do I care about that?! Fuck them!, I DO NOT CARE. You can't meddle like that in my life, I'm not a child and I know very well who I choose to marry''
''You look crazy, do you see that? Screaming and doing all this drama''
''All this drama? My fiance left me because of you!'' The father finally seemed to feel something
''My fault? If he were a real man he would have hit the front, not run away like a coward! In fact, running away is the only thing the Malfoys know how to do. ''
''He knew it would hurt me, he knew that causing a fight with you would hurt me ... '' The man fought a battle with a daughter, one staring as angry as the woman
''You said it yourself ... do you look happy?’’ He raised a dark, defiant brow.
''I'm going after him'' She turned away, being stopped on the next step, feeling her father's hand on her arm
''Astoria ... ''
''No, he is my fiancé and I am going to marry him, whether you like it or not ... I always knew that people would talk about it and that they possibly came back against me, but my own family?'' She swallowed the ball that formed in her throat, with her eyes prickling ''I think you look a lot like the rest of the pureblood, after all''
It wasn’t very easy to find Draco, there was a world of possibilities where he could have hidden, and as far as Astoria knew him, he would have preferred a place she wasn’t aware of how to get there.
What made her travel to Scotland.
Being Pure Blood had its privileges there.
She had already talked to some people who might know about her whereabouts - even her in-laws (they wouldn't be ex, until she decided they would), but nobody knew anything. Nothing, until she presses one of his co-workers and finds out that he has taken a portkey for Scotland.
It was so obvious, and so stupid that she hadn't thought of it.
Of course, this was not a small neighborhood with few houses and few people to question about a handsome, tall blonde, it was a country, and it took a lot of effort to imagine where Draco would be hiding.
And so, she was going up to an abandoned and broken castle that was on top of a hill, in one of the cities in the interior of the country, feeling frozen by the wind that whistled in her ears, time closing over her head, and the houses looking smaller and smaller. But at least, she found him
"You idiot!" It was the first thing that came out of her mouth as soon as she opened the door to that old, dark castle with a smell of dust that would probably make her sneeze, managing to find him sitting in one of the most distant chairs, drinking something that looked like wine
''Astoria .. What the fuck are you doing here?'' She realized that there were pictures torn across the walls, in addition to broken silver, looking very familiar for some reason.
''What do you think? Marry you, idiot! Or did you think I would swallow all that shit and be quiet?'' The two were close, and as much as she missed him a lot, after all, it was almost two months hunting him around, her fury was first ''Do you think I care about any shit you did years ago? During a war!? I do not. And it annoys me that you make that decision without consulting me or asking me what I think about everything my father said, and if you want to know, I think it was great nonsense.''
''You do not understand? Astoria, you deserve someone better than me, someone who can- ''
‘’-I want you, is it hard to understand? Did the Dark Mark melt your brain by any chance?'' Her heart was pounding, so nervous and happy to have found it, and alive. For a few days, she really thought she would have lost him forever, far beyond mere rejection.
"No, and that's why I'm giving you a chance to run a long way"
''I did, and even then, I ran to a fucking hill behind you. I think that says a lot'' the man denied, pacing and messing with his long, light hair.
''I cannot arrest you''
''It was never a prison, I'm here of my own free will, I'm old enough to make my own choices, I'm not a slob like you and my father seem to believe'' Draco looked at her as if he had heard the greatest offense in the world, grabbing her shoulders and vehemently denying
"I would never think of that"
''Is what it seems. You think I have no right to say who I should or shouldn't marry, whether or not I should stay by your side, which is my decision, only mine! How many times do I need to say that what you did or did not change what I feel? I like you Draco, I love you, we all have a past, and you've changed’'
''How are you so sure of that? How can you not even imagine that I can succumb to the darkness again?'' She already wanted to cry, exhausted from all that, needy with the whole situation and possibly getting sick from the drastic temperature change
''You could have done anything that day, you could have acted in many other ways, but you just preferred to do nothing and go away, afraid of hurting me ... Would you do that if you remained on the side of darkness? Would you care that much?'' Astoria stared at him, letting the walls fall completely, tired '' You said you couldn't be the man of my life, that you couldn't be the one waiting for me at the altar, that you wouldn't be the father of our son, but. You can be all of that, you are already the man of my life Draco. Every time .. '' She let herself cry, biting her lip before continuing ''All the times I thought you could have died, that you would have really abandoned me, that I would be without you .. I wouldn't even update imagine without being able to wake up by your side, of not having your love notes hidden by the house, of being alone.''
''I just don't want to hurt you, Tori, I could never do that to you'' When she think back to that night, she would remember there were tears in his eyes ''I love you so much, so much, that if necessary, for protect you, I stay away''
''You're already hurting me, and you're already getting away and proving to me that this is not what I want ... When I asked you out the first time, you asked me if I wouldn't mind the looks, and I said not. And Draco, I didn't change my answer'' The man wiped away her tears, smiling sadly in her direction
''I was thinking it was for your good'' Astoria denied, finally hugging him
''It wasn't ... I need you here with me, I want you here'' Then, without even realizing it, she continued; ''How will I raise a child on my own? He needs a father to teach him how to fly''
''What?!'' Draco pushed her away, eyes bulging and squeezing the woman's shoulders, looking like a white paper.
''Oh .. right, I forgot to mention that I'm pregnant'' Astoria smiled awkwardly, a little waryly, before being pulled back into the hug, feeling his chest tremble in a silent cry, which obviously caused your.
In the end, Draco was the man who had seen her come in a white dress, who had become her husband and who was the father of her son.
He was her man, always had been, regardless of anything.
And there was never anyone who made her change her mind.

Ignite (Avengers/Bucky Barnes Fanfiction) Chapter 1 - Everyone Has a Beginning
Tumblr media
Hello!
I am going to start off with a little sidenote before we get started here. I started this as a side blog so it is not my usual writings (I usually write kpop ff) but I have been feeling the Marvel writing vibes lately so thought that I would put myself out there with what I've had in my google docs so please be kind.
Also, I appreciate constructive critisism, it helps me write and mold my characters/ideas and I also just love hearing what you think. I'm a bit rusty right now with my writing and there may be times where things aren't consistant with updates cause I'm getting back into school soon, but here we go!
Sincerly, Doctor Stark
Oh, I almost forgot...
If you have seen SHIELD you know who AIDA is but in this story she is the equialent of FRIDAY.
Also you'll see that my OC has the same power as Quake/Daisy Johnson because I was like "WHAT POWER COULD MY CHARACTER POSSIBLY HAVE?!"
N/N = Nickname
Warnings: None...some language?
"AIDA, if anyone calls please just send it to voicemail...I really don't want to hear from the New York Times for the...." I stopped as I set my keys on my kitchen island, "AIDA?"
"Doctor Stark, it seems that my security protocols have been over run," AIDA finally replied, "I tried contacting you but it seems that he has also managed to cut into my communications."
By now I had noticed the figure that was sitting on my couch and I cautiously approached my living room like I was entering the room with a wild animal.
"Should I try to see if I can get through to Mr. Stark," AIDA questioned.
"No," I said as I finally made eye contact with the man on the couch, "He came all this way instead of fleaing the country immediatly...he has questions. You won't hurt me, will you Bucky?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me back up for a moment and introduce myself, my name is Y/F/N M.I. Stark aka N/N Stark better known as Doctor Stark. For the longest time I was just Howard Stark’s genius daughter who people barely remembered existed. I rather liked it that way though, while Tony spent his time in California soaking up the sun, partying, sleeping around, getting kidnapped for 3 months, doing some work on the side, and now becoming Iron Man (have no idea how Pepper does it)...I spend my time in New York between working at Stark Tower and doing some side consulting in DC and some...other business that takes place during my consulting. But other than that, I tend to stay in the shadows. Well, I used to be able to stay in the shadows. Then of course Tony decided that be would become Iron Man and I become someone that everyone had questions for but they weren’t going to get answers from.
Currently I live in New York just outside the city which has its perks; I have a decent sized house customized for my own needs, a yard, a pool, a fence (iron with perimeter security), a gate for my driveway, and neighbors that I can chat with.
You know, feel normal even if it’s just for 5 minutes.
Downfall is the commute. But since I am one of the owners of the company, being a little late isn’t that big of a deal for me unless I had something planned.
Now, even though Tony was Iron Man I couldn’t blame him completely for all the calls I get now. Now after the powers that I now have had been seen during the whole drone fiasco at Stark Expo. And that is something that should really be explained...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ever heard of an Agent Peggy Carter? She’s a wonderful woman and a close family friend, so close in fact that growing up I started to call her Aunt Peggy; after my parents died and Tony just about completely separated himself from the fact that he had a little sister who was 15 and in college, I could always count on Aunt Peggy when I needed someone to talk to. But as we know, a good Agent keeps her secrets and only reveals them when the time is right.
By the time I turned 21 I had completed my PhD in biomedical engineering and electrical and computer science as well as a doctorate in biochemistry (7 years of college and sleepless nights, taking more classes than I probably should have, but I did it). At the time I was just getting myself acquainted to my new office space at Stark Tower (during that time I only occupied the 80th floor) and my research and projects at a slow pace.
“Don’t feel like you have to run,” Tony said only half paying attention to me, “Start slow, you know Stark Industries just as well as anyone, you’ll be running the tower before you know it.”
I had to admit that he was right; I had been in Stark Tower thousands of times it seemed but this was new for me. But then Aunt Peggy came along and gave me that extra push that I needed.
She had said she had an office warming gift for me; what I wasn’t expecting was the almost 30 boxes of old files, some dating as far back as 1939.
“Your father was a great man, a fool at times, but a great man,” she started, “Throughout his career as both the founder Stark Industries and of SHIELD, meticulously hid his files and personal work in different places. He once told me and Edwin Jarvis the location of all the information and who to give it to should something ever happen to him.”
“Shouldn’t this be going to Tony then?” I questioned, “If this is his work then-“
She held up her hand and I stopped, letting her continue. “I remember one very particular evening when your parents had invited me out for dinner. You had just gone off to college...his little girl.”
I snorted trying to imagine my father gushing over his kids like any regular dad would and in my head it just wasn’t happening.
“He didn’t show a lot of emotion because he wanted you two to be able to face the world as it is...but for him it was hard seeing his little girl off to college even earlier than most dads would. But we did have a conversation that leads to the elephant...or should I say boxes in the room,” she said as she walked over towards them, “He said that both his children were born protégées, both were born to carry on what he had started. However, while they both possess the talents to change the world, one is more so the leader and the other the backbone.”
She opened the box in front of her that had a large ‘(Your Initials)’ written on the front of it. “He said, First born or not, had he not felt like Tony had the potential to lead, you would have become the head of Stark Industries,” she said, pulling a book from the box and holding it out to me, “Your father believed that you are the backbone to the very company that you stand in today, which is why I am now giving you these, just as he asked...keep them safe.”
And in Aunt Peggy style she left me to soak in the information that she had just told me, and to move the boxes to a room that only I could get into. I spent every waking moment going through the boxes, sorting them, trying to find what had gone wrong to make him tuck certain things away.
I found some items that I wondered why he even kept. Was it a reminder not to mess with it? A way for someone to know what to do should they see one? I didn’t know but it was staying under lock and key, that was for sure.
The book that Aunt Peggy had given me was essentially a journal, maybe even a diary, whatever you want to call it, it held the detail of things that had gone wrong, things that had gone right, and the one that she had given me wasn’t the only one. In the same box with my initials were more journals, just like the rest and there were almost 3 exclusively for Project Rebirth…
I don’t know how long I went through the boxes labeled ‘Project Rebirth’. The story of Steve Rogers, of Captain America was regular bedtime story for me.
My mother once said I should stop asking him for Captain America stories and at 5 years old it was the first time I had really seen my father get defensive about anything.
“If she wants to hear those stories then I will tell them, Maria,” he said.
But reading how long he searched the frigid waters, hoping for a signal to find his friend, I now know the look I saw behind my father’s eyes...sadness and grief.
For a time I stepped away from my file room, my workload getting heavy, ideas that my father thought of being brought to life but in a new and better way. As my projects expanded, my need for space grew, and to everyone’s surprise I now took up 5 floors in just five years, and with lab assistants and AIDA to help with the calls, I got a chance to finally step back into my file room.
I had barely touched the files over the last 5 years, but what I can say is that there was one box that I was avoiding. It was a wooden box, nothing intricate about it. It almost reminded me of my mother’s old jewelry box, a gift passed down in her family. But this box was odd. There was no mention of it in any of the journals, no note, nothing.
So I had to take my life into my own hands at that point and I carefully opened the box. When I opened it I gave a sigh of relief. Carefully cradled in the box was a vile of purple liquid, and of course, now that I have gotten past a close call with a heart attack, I found a note...taped to the inside of the lid.
“Out of the many things that I have come across in my time...blah blah blah speech about his accolades...while Dr. Abraham Erskine created the Super Soldier Serum for Project Rebirth, it was not the only serum that he created. The Terrigenesis Serum was created to react with the body’s own DNA and essentially bring forward any supernatural abilities that might be laying dormant within someone, should they have them.”
I stopped and ran my hand through my hair. They didn’t know when to stop, did they?
“Should you find this one of 2 things can be done; hide it or take it to SHIELD and only if they know what A21K609S means, are they to know about what you have….I suggest you start with the top.”
For the longest time I hid the Terrigenesis Serum, we didn’t need someone with superpowers who might be unhinged, running around.
But after I had started consulting with SHIELD for a few years and when Tony got kidnapped...my emotions got the better of me.
And I went to Fury…
He knew what the code meant, he questioned me over and over again telling me that there was a chance that I could die.
“IF YOU DON'T HAVE SOMEONE DO IT I'LL DO IT MYSELF!” I remember screeching at him.
I was taken to a lab and strapped down on the bed, since no one knew how the serum would affect me, on the screen of one of the computers I saw that Fury had pulled up the old file that SHIELD had on the serum.
I remember seeing Natasha up in the observation room looking down at me. By then we had become friends and by the look on her face I could tell that she did not approve of this.
But it was too late now…
The purple liquid traveled into my body, making me feel like every vein and artery was being shredded as it circulated. I couldn’t even tell if I was screaming, I knew my mouth was open but I could hear nothing.
I felt hands on me as the lab assistants and doctor who had been permitted in the room tried to push me back flat on the bed but there was this loud bass like noise and the hands were gone and everything went black.
When I woke up a few hours later the only person in the room with me was Fury.
“What’s this thing around me?” I asked looking purple, glowing substance around me.
Fury took a pen and threw it at the substance and it bounced back. “Some sort of shield that surrounded you after the serum took hold in your body...I suggest you try and figure out how to make it go away.”
Closing my eyes I tried to tell the shield that I was fine, I was safe, and that it could come back to me. It took a good hour but I figured it out and finally Fury was able to undo the straps that were holding me down to the table.
“So what? I’m some sort of human shield?” I questioned as a lab assistant came into the room and cautiously lifted the head of the bed up so that I could sit up. I finally got a good look at the room; equipment was knock over and strewn around the room, there was broken glass in the observation windows, and there were cracks in the walls. I gulped upon seeing this. “Did I do all this?”
“Vibration manipulation,” he replied, “Congrats Doc, you created a small earthquake right here in this lab. Not to mention you scared the hell out of the SHIELD science division when they got blasted back from that force field. But either way...looks like we have some work to do.”
TO BE CONTINUED...
