Since rewatching Psych, I've been thinking about how weird and arbitrary Shawn's interests are. Sure, late 2000's writing had something to do with it, and maybe a bit of Henry and Gus's influence, but hearing Shawn be so vocal about how he hates certain popular things or (more importantly) refuses to give them a chance BUT at the same time knowing so many pop culture references, it got me thinking.
What if the reason Shawn has so many pop culture references on hand is because of his eidetic memory, and he doesn't actually have as much of an interest in pop culture? Throughout the show, he actively avoids getting roped into big interests and franchises (see: comic books, soap operas, etc.) despite the fact that he genuinely seems excited once he's part of it. In fact, we don't get to see a lot of Shawn's interests at all unless it's based on an idea.
Take being a bounty hunter, for example. According to him, he's obsessed with the idea, but he doesn't make many references to an actual bounty hunter show or franchise. Instead, he just remembers the one bounty hunter he saw as a child and maybe references a movie or two. Because once he remembers something, he's never going to forget it, or at least not for a very long time.
That's why he thinks in references. Everything is a reference if you have a good enough memory. Everything reminds you of something. If Shawn hears someone make a Spock reference, it's in his repertoire forever. But he wouldn't be caught dead watching the shows or movies because that's just too much information. Why on earth would he endure that?
Of course, it also intertwines with his ADHD. He has bouts of energy and trouble focusing. He can't sit still to save his life, and he hyperfixates...or he would if his memory didn't make him averse to it. So if he doesn't want to hyperfixate on an information-based interest, then what does he hyperfixate on? Physical activities. Instead of learning about his favorite daredevil, he tries to be one himself. When he learns about oil rigs, he doesn't get a book from the library. He tries to find oil in his backyard.
This is also where he and Henry differ regarding Shawn's "potential." Henry is correct when he talks about Shawn's "wasted" potential, but he doesn't understand the toil of having this eidetic memory and ADHD. Here's what I think happened: Henry probably noticed Shawn's stellar memory at a young age, realized he has a gift, spoke with his wife about her eidetic memory, learned that you need to challenge your child's eidetic memory at a young age or it'll go away, started the hat game to make it fun and exciting, but then Shawn's ADHD appeared. Suddenly, it made him much harder to raise (because let's be real, Shawn was not an easy child.) Henry didn't know what he was doing anymore, and since it was the 80's, he didn't have the resources to properly understand his kid's behavior, so he tried to find a common interest, and started training Shawn to be a detective "because kids love cop shows." But Shawn struggled to stay attached to one single interest, and when he grew up, he stopped trying to articulate his problems because his mom (the only person who remotely understood his struggles) left, and he blamed his dad for it.
And academics? Those are a joke because what is the point of studying if he already remembers everything? Until, of course, he needs to apply it to a problem-solving test or writing an essay. Suddenly, he's memorizing a math teacher's answer sheet and copying Gus's report.
Yes, Shawn could have been a great cop. He could be an amazing scientist or anything really. He could have been a national spelling bee champion like Gus wanted to be. Even 15 years later, Shawn remembered exactly what word Gus messed up, how to spell the word, and what letter he made Gus slip up, but he didn't want to be on that stage with Gus because that requires so much learning. And so much time. And so much memorizing. And he refuses to sit still for that long when he knows that overloading his head is going to give him migraines.
Also his "I've heard it both ways" probably comes from the fact that people with eidetic memory can still make lots of mistakes if they don't actively commit something to memory. If Shawn only overhears something, he'll still naturally try to fill in the gaps like everyone else, but because he's so confident in his memory, he just believes what he remembers to be true, leading him to repeat incorrect information with confidence. That could also be why some of his references are incorrect due to mixed-up homophones.
Anyway, this post was supposed to be about how Shawn is just a walking movie reference because his memory won't let him forget quotes, but then I fell into a rabbit hole of the negative effects of having an eidetic memory as a child, and I am very passionate about how Henry actually tried his best, and people need to stop calling him a horrible parent. Love y'all. Let me know what you think.

... and more coming soon !
Tumblr media
note. i'm on my nth rewatch of cm and my comfort character has not had a single day of comfort so here i am. i like the idea of giving spencer the slowest burn of a love interest who has been there for him since s1. as the synopsis suggests, the updates will consist of moments that lead to the buildup of their relationship and not a proper overarching plot. this is really just me writing mutual pining fluff and some slow burn angst. things may not be chronological, so one update might be s1!sr and the next be s7 then back to s2 soooo yeah >_< when i've gotten into the swing of things, i'd probably be willing to take /suggestions/ on certain plots from the show featuring spencer and this yn. for now, i'll just open a taglist. just send me an ask or reply to this post. thank you !

That night was just like every other performance. It went well, the crowd had seem to love it, specially since it was packed. After the show, your body was aching and you were tired. You had been at the opera house since noon to prepare for the evening show. All you wanted to do was go home and rest, but you promised your friend you'd wait for her since her mother had called her over to 'entertain' a gentlemen who's asked for her.
Another thing about being a ballerina was to please the opera guests. Which were mostly men. It was always 'You be good to them and they'll confiscate you greatly'. For example, get better roles, more classes, get high quality shoes, costumes, make up or even a good work for the teachers. You basically had to do what they wanted no questions asked. That's why half of your classmates were very sweet to the patrons who asked for their attentions. It was the harsh reality, but what could you do? The men frequented and funded the opera. If they were to give a complaint to the owner or teachers. You can kiss your career and hard work goodbye for good.
You did have to entertain some guests, but everything changed when you had caught the eye of Thomas Shelby. Out of all the other women, he choose you. Since then, no other patron dared to ask for you. In a way, you were always reserved for Thomas. He was very generous to you. Often getting you bigger roles or better roles, good quality shoes along with clothes, more classes, even giving you extra money just for you to have. In some way, you couldn't help but fall in love with him. But at the same time you felt like you couldn't love him. Or at least go around telling everyone you love him, it was a secret of yours.
As you roamed around the back stage, seen the many patrons hanging around the other ballerinas. You were then pulled to the side by someone, once you saw who it was, it was the person you hoped wouldn't bump into. "Minerva." You said, nervously, looking at her. "Do you know why I'm here?" She asked. "Because you missed me?" You teased, but she rolled her eyes. "No time for games, I need the money urgently." She said, making you now nervous. "Urgently? As in tonight? Or tomorrow night?" You asked, but she cut you off before you could say more. "Y/n, I need to pay rent." She said, more sternly and serious. You looked at her, seen that she wasn't playing around. You let out a sigh. "Alright, you'll get it later tonight." You said, seen how Minerva was now more relaxed by hearing you say that you'll have the money later tonight. "Thank you." She said, about to walk away, but stopped and looked at you. "Don't forget." She reminded you and walked away. You couldn't help but sigh and leaned against the wall she had you pinned against. Now you had to find Thomas.
You first looked in the small ballroom, which was flooded with both patrons and ballerinas. Talking and enjoying the champagne being served. You analyzed the room, seen how the men were being very touchy with your classmates and how they'd giggle, as well as run their hands on the men's chest or arm. Deep down, you knew that they'd only pretended to like the men just so that they didn't have any problems. No sign of Thomas anywhere, then you spotted one of the girl's that lives with you. "Hey, have you seen Thomas?" You asked her. She thought for a moment. "No, I haven't. Last time I saw him, he went back stage." She said, you then sigh in annoyance. "Why don't you go with someone else." She suggested, then you let out a small chuckle. "Someone else? You know how Thomas would feel about that, they'd be a blood bath." You told her. "Anyways, thanks." You said to her, then walking off backstage to find him.
As you walked back stage, they were girls just sitting and chatting amongst each other. Avoiding the attention of the patrons. The more you looked around, you heard moans as well as other noises going on behind closed doors. As well as talking and so on. When you spotted a mirror, you stopped to fix yourself a bit, such as fixing your hair and attire to look presentable when you found Thomas. As you continued to search, you asked a group of ladies talking and asked if they've seen Thomas, again, no. So you decided to go upstairs to maybe see if he was there. You couldn't help but over hear a conversation going on with a group of gentlemen, about how he ended up loosing money. When you continued to way up the stairs, you then bumped into the man you were searching for. "Oh! Tommy, I was looking for you." You said, with a small smile. "Y/n, I was hoping I'd find you." He responded, while placing his hand onto your sort cheek to feel his skin against yours.
Tumblr media
You then pulled him towards the darker part of the stairs, where there was no light or prying eyes. Once you and him were alone, Thomas pulled your body against his, him wrapping his arms around your waist and your arms wrapping themselves around his neck. You and him then engaged in a kiss, it went from slow to desperate. As if he'd been craving to kiss you for the longest time, you couldn't help but moan against his lips, as his tongue rubbed against yours. Then you felt how he gently bit your bottom lip. Causing your whole body to burn up and the heat between your legs to get stronger. You felt how his hand began to run up your spin and touched feel the warmth of your naked back. After some kissing, Thomas then pulled you down with him. Sitting on the step of the stairs and you on his lap.
He pulled away, beginning to kiss your neck. Making you moan and quiver underneath him. You felt his hand other free hand going underneath your puffy long skirt. Feeling up on your thighs, caressing the soft material of your tights. It made you purr as you felt him touch and grab at you. It made you feel as if you were the only woman in his life, but you knew deep down that was wrong. but it didn't hurt to imagine that. You then felt how his other hand went underneath your skirt right onto your crotch area and ripped your tights apart. Exposing your now wet panties. Making you gasp. "Tommy! Those are expensive!" You whispered, still in shock that he'd ripped your tights, that you had been saving up to get. "No worries love, you know I'll get you new ones." He said, which was true.
You let out a small moan, feeling how his hand gently caressed the wet patch of your silky panties. "Excited already eh?" He teased, with a smirk. He then tore the tights more, to be able to have more access to the waist band of your underwear. Without a moment longer, he shoved his hands down your panties, beginning to tease your now needy and throbbing clit. Making you let out a slightly louder moan by his fingers gently rubbing your clit. You wrapped your arms tighter around his shoulders, digging your nails onto his white shirt as he began to thrust his middle and ring finger inside you. "Tommy." You moaned, as you closed your eyes, feeling his fingers pumping in and out of you as if this was the first time he's done it.
"Oh!" You whined, feeling your legs beginning to shake and sweat building up on your forehead. Just by him fingering, you were left weak. You then felt his fingers leave your now drenched cunt, making you whine in annoyance. Quickly Thomas unbuckled his pants and pulled out his now hard cock, out of nowhere, he thrusted into you. Making you throw your head back and let out an even louder moan. Without another moment, he began to thrust into you. You were basically holding onto him as if your life dependent on it. Thomas wrapped his arm around your lower half and held you in place. You felt his lips going right back to your neck, kissing and slightly biting onto your flesh. It's been forever since you and him engaged in this. You were too focused on the pleasure given and receiving, that you had completely forgot your whole purpose on why you needed Thomas.
All that could be heard was your moans and his breath heavying. Echoing on the empty stairs, basically giving away what we were both doing. But it was nothing that the others in the opera house haven't heard before. "T-Tommy!" You moaned, as your nails dug harder onto his shirt. Feeling how his cock was now slamming in and out of you. At a delicious and hard pace. You also felt how he rubbed your clit at a hard and pressured pace. Non stop, despite his hand getting sore. Your walls clamped around him tightly, making him groan. Knowing you were close to cumming and so was he. His pace got faster and hard, making you mewl and whine by the now. You then began to move your hips up and down as a way to help you and him reach your climate. You also felt his not so busy hand was grabbing at your breast, squeezing your soft flesh and pinching your nipple every now and then as a form of teasing you. A whole wave of pleasure hit your body like a train, you felt youself cumming right around him. Having you let out a pleasurable shriek. Feeling yourself nearly collapsing on Thomas. He then pulled out before he could cum inside you, instead he cummed right on your thighs.
Tumblr media
Afterwards, you back in the dressing room, alone. Tire and even more sore then before. You leaned against the wooden pillar. Thinking about the moment you and Thomas shared, it felt special during the moment, but afterwards, it felt almost wrong. It made you sad in some way, but there was nothing you could do. You then heard the door open, seen the ballerinas walking in, to get changed back into their regular attire. You met up with your friend again, who came up to you and greet you. You then helped her get out of her costume as you had small talk. "So, who did your mother find?" You asked, while unbuttoning her dress. "Yeah, an old guy." She said, with an annoyed look. "Old huh? Your mother has bad taste." You teased. "Right?" She said, as she began to undress from her costume.
"So, what did you do as you waited for me?" She asked. "Not much, just getting the money that Minerva needed to pay the rent of this month." You explained. "So, you spent your evening with Thomas?" She teased, while giggling. Making you roll your eyes. Then you spotted Minerva walk by. "Hold on a sec." You told your friend who was busy changing. You went up to Minerva, who was also changing. "Here you go." You said, handing her the small envelop of cash. She took it and began to count the money. "Thanks." She said, before you could walk off to change you were stopped. "Hold on." She said, then she handed you some money. "This is yours." Minerva said, while handing you the extra money you decided to leave in there. "Are you sure? I mean, that's for next months rent and-" You were cut off by her. "Don't worry about it, besides. You've earned it." She simply said, you hesitantly took the money. It was enough to buy youself some food or maybe those tights Thomas tore, youo gave Minerva a smile then walked off to get changed.
Tumblr media
The next morning, back at the house you and the rest of your housemates were having breakfast together. Talking and gossiping about last night and how it went. Until the door got knocked, Minerva want to answer it, as you all continued to eat, then you heard her call your name. You excused yourself from the table and went to the door entrance. Minerva had a small gift box in hand. "You called?" You asked. "This came for you." She said, handing you the box. You took the box and thanked her, she then left back to the dinning room. You looked at the box for a moment, then you opened it to see what was inside. It was a pair of tights with a small not on it. You took the note and read it. 'For you -Thomas Shelby' It a simple note, but it was sweet. You couldn't help but smile and your face heat up.

Hello! I wanted to send my appreciation to you as a longtime fan of OSP and Auroura! I am an English Major with ADHD and your content always makes me inspired and my English Lit. Brain very happy with how good your storytelling is.
My question is what stories inspire you to write or make you want to sit down and tell a story? Your content makes me want to work on my projects, but my Adhd only last as long as I am not disturbed (i.e. need to eat or get up and move). You have always been upfront about your Adhd so my second question is how do you keep focused on your story and not burn out? (Talking as someone who is writing a novel as their thesis)
You have been a great inspiration over the years and someone I look up to as a storyteller! I wish you focus and luck! => 💝
Woo! Interesting questions!
When it comes to inspiration, I haven't really found a pattern for what works and what doesn't. The majority of the time, only new experiences/stories I haven't seen or read before work for me - rewatches and re-reads, while much more comfortable for my brain, don't tend to translate into creative inspiration for me - but it's not like a specific genre, or even a specific kind of relaxation, consistently work for me.
The way my brain works is a bit "no take only throw", as it were. I want to just sit down and make solid, steady progress in a predictable environment with a routine, but what I need is to try new things, go outside, take risks - because all those things give me new material to work with and refill the creative gas tank. When I'm stuck, I can't just hit the gas and punch through the block - I need to back up and try a new angle.
The good part of all this is that whatever engine that's running my subconscious is actually pretty good at signaling what it needs. The ADHD brain will be repelled by activities that aren't working for it and drawn to the things it needs at the time, whether that's creative energy or exercise or cleaning or doodling or listening to music or suddenly binge-watching a show that's not even all that great, and once it's got what it needs out of it - whatever that is - it'll be repelled again, either spitting out a sudden burst of creative energy or retreating to its den to chew on whatever it got out of the experience for a more slow-building reward. Little bursts of motivation and creativity pop up all throughout the day, and if you can pivot to the activity in question - or at least note down the idea you just had - you'll be able to harness that pretty nicely.
This "system" really only works for me because I have an extremely unstructured schedule and nobody relying on me to be consistent moment-to-moment. If I'm following the creative needs of my inscrutable Better Writer In The Back Of My Head, I can't be worrying about things like a consistent lunchtime or classes or a 9-to-5. All of my observations are caveat'd by the fact that I am ridiculously lucky to have the kind of freedom of movement and schedule that I can focus entirely on getting to know my brain better.
When it comes to staying focused on any one project, I've reluctantly concluded that the only way to win is not to play. Creativity needs time and diversity to recharge, and when you stall out in any given work session, it's usually because you're out of gas. This is why I maintain several projects in varying stages of "for my eyes only"-ness - a sketchbook, private writing projects, patreon doodles, music practice; even in the large-scale projects like the channel and the comic I have multiple angles of attack at any given time, where I can as needed switch between scripting, research, drawing frames, storyboarding more plot onto the end of the comic's current draft and lining/coloring/background-ing the finalized pages of the comic chapters earlier. This lets me maintain semi-steady progress on average, even if any one facet of the process is left by the wayside for potentially even weeks at a time.
If you're working on one writing project, one novel, I'd recommend giving yourself some time to do small-scale side-hobbies. It won't feel like they're helping, but they are.
I've started to think of inspiration rather similarly to the way I think about nutrition and digestion. It's a somewhat arcane process that, despite being a part of me, I don't exactly understand what's going on under the hood. If you eat only one thing, no matter what that one thing is, you're going to end up sick because you're lacking all sorts of niche micronutrients. If you parcel out a specific space of the only things you're allowed to eat, you might not get sick (as quickly) but you're likely going to become increasingly miserable as you think of the things you're not allowing yourself to try, or slowly build up highly specific forms of malnourishment by avoiding certain things entirely. But if you start listening to your body and try eating what it says it needs at any given time - oh, I could go for a rice bowl right now, oh I don't think I'm feeling something sugary today, man I could really go for some grapes - you're likely to hit a broadly good balance of health because you're hitting a broad range of things your body needs, even if you don't know all of their names or calorie counts, and your body is putting those resources to good use without your conscious input. Between my brain and my stomach, I only trust one of those to actually understand what a stomach needs to do its thing - and between me and my creative brain, most of the time it feels like I just work here.
I hope there was something helpful in all this!

Good day, I was actually the anon who requested oshi no ko… I hope you enjoyed it cause I just recently rewatched it cause I couldn’t move past Ai’s death.
But can I have Yandere Aqua and more specifically if you are ok with it, with someone from his past life like his young intern. Like someone he had an attachment to as a doctor as they spent a lot of time working together and become really good friends despite the reader not really being into an idol stuff. So after his death, the reader naturally mourn him and left his hometown because of guilt of not being able to find his body.
So flash forward reader is now a certified doctor for stunt doubles and meats Aqua in a movie set. Seeing you, his once meek intern now a professional doctor brings feelings from him. You are his only connection to his past life as Gorou and he can’t seem to shake you off the emotions you bringout from him. He sees you as someone he has to control to protect you from harm and this leads to yandere obsession.
Thanks for reading my ask and request. Although thinking this more clearly, I feel like there would be a significant age gap between intern reader and aqua but The idea won’t leave my head so I hope you’re ok with it as long as both Aqua and Reader are legal adults
Oshi no Ko was literally so good! I cried at Ai’s death scene, it was so sad! (Then again, I cry at everything on TV these days lol)
I made Reader young at the start, but there’s still a large age gap obviously. Both are adults though, so it’s technically fine.
Title: To See You Again
Pairings: Hoshino Aqua x Reader
WARNINGS: Yandere themes, significant age gap (legal adults)
Summary: Aqua sees someone from his past life again after 18 years. It brings up some darker feelings.
“You know, I can’t really get into this idol stuff, but it makes me happy to see you happy,” you giggled.
Dr. Gorou couldn’t tear his eyes away from the TV, where a beautiful girl in a pink dress danced and sang on a brightly-lit stage. He gave a grunt of acknowledgment to show he’d heard his young intern.
At just 18, you were the youngest person working in the hospital. It was clear you weren’t aiming to be a gynecologist like Dr. Gorou was, but your hometown was a small one and there weren't many options to intern at.
You sat down on the bed next to your mentor, watching Ai blow a kiss to the audience, her eyes shining with emotion. Although you didn’t see the appeal in it, you understood that he had gotten into it from a young patient who had died. You couldn’t help but wonder if that death had scarred him somehow.
Scooting a little closer, you smiled up at Dr. Gorou. He looked at you from the corner of his eye for a moment, smiling back, before he turned his attention back to the idol on-screen. You stifled a sigh.
He’d never notice your feelings, would he?
—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aqua stood idly around, watching the other actors practice their lines together. He’d already memorized his part of the script- it was easy compared to all the medical terms he’d had to memorize in medical school.
“Quiet on set! Quiet on set!” Someone called out. The actors went quiet as a stunt actor got in place on set. Aqua watched silently from the corner he stood in.
The stunt double took a running leap through a glass window, taking the place of the main character, who had performed the scene just before this one. Suddenly, he stood up, clutching his leg and letting out a strangled cry. Sticking out from his thigh was a large shard of glass, blood beginning to seep through his pants.
“Cut!” The director yelled, leaping up from his chair. “Aqua, take him to the doctor on set!”
Aqua bit back a sigh. Why him? He walked over to the stunt double and offered him his arm to take. The stunt actor leaned against him, limping with each step and wincing in pain.
Aqua had never seen the doctor, but he knew where she was staying. He helped the man along the backstage hallway and to the office. He gave a quick knock and entered, helping the stunt double onto the bed.
Once he saw the doctor, his heart stopped.
You were older now, probably around the age he was when he’d died in his previous life, but it was unmistakably you. He felt an irresistible tug at his heart when he looked at you, reminded of your smile and obvious crush on him.
For a moment, he waited for you to recognize him, but remembered that he wasn’t the same person anymore. Of course you wouldn’t know him.
You had turned all of your attention to the poor stunt double in front of you, and Aqua was struck by the realization that you’d matured so much since he’d last seen you. You were a fully fledged doctor now, not just an intern.
He was surprised by the thoughts that crossed his mind. I’m an adult again, so surely she’ll recognize me and want me again. And even worse, the childish reaction he had when he saw the wedding ring on her finger. I knew her first!
Back when he was Dr. Gorou, he had specifically ignored your advances. He was too old for you in his 30s, he had thought. But now, here you were, and the roles had swapped. Now he was the young adult, and the attraction had taken hold of him. Maybe it was hormones or maybe it was the fact that he finally had something from his old life in front of him.
He spotted a photo on your desk and leaned in to inspect it. He was shocked by the image- younger you standing next to Dr. Gorou. He just about choked on his tongue asking, “Hey, who is this?”
You looked up from the leg you were tending and followed his gaze. A sad smile crossed your face. “Oh, that’s my old mentor. He was a kind doctor that went missing, presumed dead. I miss him every day.”
Take that, (Y/n)’s husband. He thought victoriously.
“When can I see you again, Doc?” The stunt double asked as you bandaged his leg, “Maybe at a bar, just you and me?”
Aqua felt red-hot rage shooting through his veins. How dare he?
You giggled your sweet giggle, the one he’d missed for 18 long years, and turned him down. He didn’t deserve your laughter or your kindness, and Aqua seethed silently from it. You had pined after him for so long, why had you moved on?
Maybe your husband had forced you into a relationship. Threatened you. That’s the only conclusion he could make from this situation. After all, you still had his picture on your desk.

Could you Write a fic Where Reader is at a lovejoy concert and suprise wilbur? Thanks :,)
“Do We Tell Them?”
Superstarbur x Female Reader
Warnings: Just some sweet adorable fluff for y’all :)
A lovely anon request! My first request for a fic vs. a headcannon! And let me tell you, dear anon, this idea is AMAZING! I’ve always wanted to write a fic involving the reader at one of Wilbur’s gigs, and I’m so glad I finally get the chance! Big apologies if this isn’t what you had in mind… :’)
Fic below cut!
I wink at Ash from where I’m standing, slipped between the barrier and the stage in a shadowy alcove. My view here is excellent, and Wilbur can’t see me. Perfect.
It was the band’s collective idea (minus Wilbur, of course), to sneak me into a gig to surprise my boyfriend. I’d been to a lot of them if they were local, snuggled into Wilbur’s sweats backstage and running to him for kisses when they were done playing, but I’d never been this close to him during a show.
While Wilbur and I had been together for ages at this point, we weren't exactly public. Sure, we’d run into fans while out on a date, occasionally getting stopped while acting like slightly more than friends, but to the fandom, it was all rumors. Rumors we were still debating when to confirm.
“I want to thank everyone for coming out to see our not-so-little band tonight,” Wilbur says, sweeping his chestnut curls out of his face as he prepares to end the show. “Your support means the world to us, and-“
His honey-brown gaze sweeps out over the crowd as he’s speaking, and I feel my heart catch in my throat as he looks directly at me, face giving away that my spot wasn’t exactly as hidden as I had hoped.
“Ok, which one of you guys did this?” Wilbur laughs, looking slightly sheepish as he turns his gaze on Ash, Joe, and Mark in turn. “Do we tell them?”
I’m dangerously close to the barrier where I know the fans could spot me, and from what I can hear, there’s a decent amount of confusion and concern spreading through the crowd.
“Fuck it,” Wilbur sighs, shaking his head as a rosy flush spreads across his face. “There’s no point in not telling you guys now- my bandmates snuck my girlfriend into the gig.”
A moment of dead silence and shock falls through the room before the audience erupts in screams and cheers. I take this as my cue, stage lights bright in my eyes as I walk towards Ash, who’s kneeling down to help me climb onto the stage.
I was expecting a hug or an innocent kiss on the cheek when I finally reached the center of the stage where Wilbur stood, not for him to pull me in with a flourish for a long, sweet kiss.
“This wasn’t how I expected to make our relationship public, love,” he jokes, fiddling with the mic stand to lower it to my height. “Wanna say hi?”
“Hello?” I say cautiously in the mic, mouth dropping open in shock at the cheer that erupts. “Is this what it’s like to be famous, Will?”
“Somewhat,” he replies, love shining in his eyes as he wraps an arm around my waist. “Here go all the fan theories about if some of our songs are about you.”
“Well, are they?”
“They will be.”
*I rewatched some of the videos I got when I saw Lovejoy live before I wrote this, and I feel like a transcript of what I was saying when Wilbur walked on stage is appropriate after this fic theme.
Wilbur: How are we doing tonight, Chicago?
Me, very high pitched screaming: OH MY GODDDDDDD!
Wilbur: Thank you for coming to my castle.
Me, in tears: THIS IS HAPPENING!
Wilbur: I built this. With my own hands.
Me, crying: I love you!
I’m past the point of being embarrassed. Drink water, stay safe, I love you all <3

wot rewatch (book spoilers edition) 2x8
So this post is gonna have some casting and location spoilers about s3, as well as book spoilers through book 14: a memory of light.
Thoughts about Egwene as the modern-age counterpart to Lanfear really get into spoiler territory because I think a large part of it is going to come out in Egwene's reaction to Rand moving on from their relationship vs Lanfear's reaction. Lanfear could never get over Lews Therin, but Egwene is going to move on and seek new paths and new relationships of her own. We will probably even (my guess) have Egwene be the one to initiate the 'final breakup' at the start of s3, just like she initiated the breakup in 1x1. I am definitely intrigued by the angle that they'll use for the breakup in s3. Maybe being able to protect Rand here in this episode is going to heal the part of Egwene that has been feeling so guilty over not being able/allowed to protect Rand in 1x8 and she might also then have some anger/frustration that Rand made choices that made it impossible for her to help him. And she wants a partner who isn't going to make choices like that on her behalf.
That they tied in Egwene's striving so hard at the White Tower in with her wanting to protect the people that she cares about also makes it easier for her not to go back to the White Tower next season (as I suspect that she will not; though we'll see - but I suspect that we'll get the arrival in the Waste in ep2 or maybe even the end of ep1). Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne have all seen that there is a bigger fight that needs them right now and going back to train at the White Tower might well be at the bottom of their priority list, even before they hear from Moiraine about what happened in Cairhien.
2. I also feel like the Ishamael-Mat comparison is kinda foreshadowing the Mat-All the Forsaken Who Are Jealous of LTT comparison that we get in a lot of the middle/late books, which we may still get when Sammael and potentially Demandred come into play. Unlike the Forsaken with LTT, Mat is not envious of Rand's high status and title. He doesn't mind being 'in Rand's shadow' and is baffled when Melindhra keeps trying to push him out of said shadow and into seizing the spotlight. He doesn't want it!
Hmm, Forsaken round-up/confirmations. Obviously, we have Lanfear and we had Ishamael. Lanfear will continue to be a presence in s2, I'm currently assuming.
Confirmed:
Moghedien - likely going to be involved in Nynaeve's plotlines, for the most part, I'm guessing. I think she may also take over at least part of Mesaana's plotline. Since all five of the ta'veren are acknowledged as important by the Shadow, she'll even be acting within orders to get obsessed with Nynaeve!
Sammael - Illian is in the picture; I'm guessing we'll get some strong Mat-Sammael compare/contrasts once he's 'on stage'. I'm wondering if Mat will actually be allowed to finish out the Illian plan in the show instead of being yanked away prematurely, and only going to Ebou Dar afterwards? I'm not sure how much we need Mat-in-Salidar in the show. Too soon to really speculate. If we have Sammael... I'm not sure if we get Demandred. They kinda fill the same 'niche' in the Forsaken ecosystem.
Graendal - she just needs to handle chaos somewhere; it doesn't have to be Arad Doman. I think @markantonys suggested the idea of her being the Forsaken who takes over Caemlyn, which is interesting! Both Rahvin and Graendal are big into Compulsion. Not having Rahvin does potentially mean that we don't get Rand balefiring him in order to bring back Aviendha & Mat (and briefly Asmodean, lol), which would be tough to lose. Though they could put that in somewhere else, against a different Forsaken. If they are keeping Rahvin, then Graendal might end up being the Forsaken that gets attached to bothering Perrin, narratively.
Almost certain:
Asmodean - training Rand. I'm hoping he lasts longer in the show than in the books, lol.
Semirhage - taking over Ishamael's place with influencing the Seanchan. But we won't get introduced to her until Tuon also arrives, I'm guessing.
Ishamael died here, so that does imply to me that we're going to get Moridin. I would guess in s5 or s6, to give the rest of the Forsaken time to play on the board for a long while.
Maybe:
The last spot is, for me, a competition between Demandred and Rahvin.
If Demandred - I'm hoping that the show does Taimandred. We haven't seen Taim on-screen, so there's plenty of time for Demandred to kill him and take his place. Taim essentially behaves obsessively jealous over Rand's status in the exact same way as Demandred, just with even worse vibes, lol. They can be combined.
otoh, they already have one of the 'incredibly jealous of LTT' Forsaken lined up for the show, so they might want to bring in another who doesn't really care much about LTT, and do Rahvin instead.
If Rahvin - then he'll go to Caemlyn, but I suspect he wouldn't go there until after Elaida & co have all left the city. Keeping Rahvin in would mean that we would probably be getting Rand balefiring him in order to bring back Mat, Aviendha, & Asmodean.
We do have a pretty healthy variety of motivations among the Forsaken that are lined up for the show, I think. In the books, Semirhage had an alliance with... Demandred and Mesaana, I think, but Mesaana is definitely out and Demandred might be as well, so she might be flying solo.
3. I really love the implication in this scene that Rand is going to potentially design the Asha'man uniforms based on what he was having the male Aes Sedai (including himself) wear during the War of Power.
4. Now that I'm rewatching, I wonder if we're gonna get Rand being treated as a political leader in Falme at the start of s3! Since it may be echoing how Tear was used in the books, as a fulfillment of prophecy.
I love my idea about Caemlyn subbing in for Tear, but Falme really does work for most of that. Maybe something more like... ep1: Falme; ep2: the first split, where Elayne and Nynaeve head off to try to hunt down... idk something, and the rest of the group heads east, ending up in Caemlyn where they meet Gawyn, Galad, & Elaida, ep3: the waste/rhuidean, ep4: tower coup, ep5: alcair dal & capturing asmodean; ep6: battle of two rivers; ep7: nynaeve vs moghedien; ep8: battle of cairhien & the door incident
5. The people of Falme getting saved by Rand in this way also leaves them open to the influence of Masema, who definitely looked like he was Finding Religion at the end of the episode. So Falme may end up being the headquarters of the Prophet of the Dragon. That storyline kinda dragged on in the books in a very annoying way but the bones of it are genuinely fascinating and I think there's a lot that the show could do with it. Because there are two main threads of people who are dangerous due to the Dragon arriving specifically -- there are the people who will hate and fear him but there are also the Dragonsworn who believe that his arrival has broken all previous ties and take it too far due to religious zealotry.
6. Lanfear's full plan, from what I can piece out and with some speculation:
a. Write out a prophecy in blood on the moondial and sell the shattered pieces to Doman, knowing that Moiraine is a likely buyer. She may have done other things to arrange said purchase as well. What I love about this is that it means that she was poking at Ishamael when she asked why he hadn't killed Moiraine, even as she was figuring out how to use Moiraine for her own purposes.
b. Set up an inn in Cairhien and arrange for Rand to stay there. Figure out a way into a relationship with him by taking advantage of his vulnerability. I'm even wondering if all of Rand's bad dreams this season have actually been Lanfear and not Ishamael. I'm pretty sure that the one in 2x6 featured a fake Ishy.
c. I think that Verin & Tomas have potentially been under Lanfear's orders for most/all of the season, given that Lanfear has been invested in Moiraine. And Lanfear being invested in Moiraine makes it... more likely that Selene being a Moiraine cosplay was 100% intentional on her part which is... fascinating. A fascinating look into Lanfear's psychology. I mean, she really did cultivate a very sugar mommy dynamic with Rand.
d. Get most of the pieces in motion... and then her plans get screwed when Barthanes's mom tells Moiraine where Rand went, and Lanfear gets stabbed and temporarily loses her boy. But it's okay! She can adjust her plans! (Theory: I think this is why she had Liandrin talk to Barthanes; she figured out what happened and wanted to punish the Damodred family for ruining her plans -- there really wasn't any actual way for Barthanes to even get to Moiraine to kill her, so that wasn't the real plan; I think it was petty revenge on Lanfear's part)
e. So, Rand goes to sleep and she's able to start working on him. She gets him to agree to go to Falme! Yes! She's so close to her Happy Ending with Lews Therin Telamon Rand al'Thor!
...and then Rand gets captured by the Amyrlin Seat of these new Aes Sedai and Lanfear needs to break her future devoted husband Rand out of jail, ugh, he asks so much of her. (secretly, she wishes he would ask more)
f. So, jailbreak time! With a brief pause to ship Mat Cauthon to Falme. With Lanfear maybe suspecting that Ishamael is wrong about Mat and that things aren't going to go how he expects. She uses Verin to make sure that Moiraine & co are going to go to the Waygate, because she's figured out exactly where she plans to dump Moiraine so that she can play her part of the plan.
There is also some speculation that Maksim may be a darkfriend as well. If he is, then he was also used as a pawn by Lanfear to get another Aes Sedai to help with the plan.
Lanfear also takes this opportunity to further poison the White Tower against Rand, by having his escape tied to a Forsaken rampage on the Foregate.
g. Lanfear has complete faith that Lews Therin Rand is going to successfully take care of Ishamael! That's her man! He can do anything! She just needs to clear the way for him and get him in the right place at the right time, and he'll do the rest. She even makes sure to deliver the Horn of Valere to some of his friends! He's got this in the bag!
h. ...then she makes the mistake of stopping in to say 'hi' to Ishamael and gloat about Rand being in Falme, tipping her hand and causing Ishamael's decision to release the rest of the Forsaken. Oops.
i. Well, Rand has been proclaimed the Dragon (yay!) but now the rest of the Forsaken are free and she's been told she needs to stay away from him (boo!).
j. ...time to come up with a new plan.
6. "I know who kills him. And what he uses to do it."
The wild thing here is that, iirc, it's his unhealable wound that kills Rand's body at the Last Battle, right? Which would mean Min's interpretation of her viewing was absolutely correct -- Mat DOES 'kill' Rand in this episode. It just takes a while before the death actually takes effect. So one of my theories -- that Mat was taking the place of Alivia in being the one who 'helps' Rand die -- that I dismissed because we're way too soon for that... is kinda true?
7. I have to admit, it confuses me when I still see people arguing that Mat is going to need to go to the White Tower to get healed from the dagger. The show made it very clear that he was Not Touching the dagger. His entire plan centered around using the dagger without touching it. And Mat has already spent a lot of time in the White Tower and worked his hardest to try to escape -- why would he go back? Plus, the people making these arguments already know that we're doing book 4 next season. Mat doesn't go anywhere near the White Tower in book 4. And his WT stuff hits some 'rule of cool' buttons but it's not... narratively important (especially if Rahvin didn't make the cut).
Going to Rhuidean and getting his medallion is key to Mat's future developments. And the show has put so much work into his relationship with Rand, so it just seems likely that they would want to build on that in s3 rather than abandoning it so that Mat can doink around the countryside with a variety of companions (it's so bizarre for me to see people prioritizing Mat's book 3 plotline over "Mat enters an alternate dimension to get a special medallion and special weapon that are key to his narrative" - but it's probably the same people who spend, like, ten books hating on the Wondergirls for not being grateful enough to Mat at the Stone of Tear).
8. I do think that we're going to skip Lan's bond having a stop-over at anyone else and have him go straight from Moiraine to Nynaeve. I feel like this stressful period here between the two of them in s2 was standing in for a lot of the tensions that they faced in the books (and that broke them apart in the books) but in the show they are now both on the same page -- they're both committed to "protecting Rand, guiding him" and we know that Moiraine approves of Nynaeve (and that LAN knows that she does) from the end of s1.
They may have some friction next season over the best way to help Rand, potentially, as Rand may be frustrated with Moiraine proclaiming him as the Dragon without his permission, but I don't think it'll get as bad as it does in the books (especially since I kinda feel like we might be 'losing' Moiraine at the end of the season).
9. The fact that we did not see Turak's room of curiosities makes me even MORE curious about whether or not a certain redstone doorway is there. That we ended the episode at the climax of the battle rather than getting any downtime after makes me feel like we are going to have at least one episode at the start of s3 where everyone is together so that we can establish the new group dynamics. That could take place in Caemlyn, like I've speculated, or it could take place here in Falme. They also might have left it open because they weren't sure if they could get this location back for s3 filming, so didn't want to commit to where the doorway might be located.
Given what Rafe & co have said about s3 being a 'closer adaptation' of bk4, I am leaning towards us getting a lot of those early 'book Tear' elements in whatever city we open with next season.
10. I suspect that we may get an Ingtar-ish storyline with a different character in the future. In the books, it is a cool moment, but it's cool because we had time to build up Ingtar's relationship with Rand and Rand was able to offer him a kind of absolution. If we hadn't needed to recast Mat and then restructure the entire s2 plotline, then maybe we would have had that kind of time, but that's the realities of working in television, especially in this, our time of Covid.
We've had a lot of complex Darkfriends on the show so far (while in the books, we only really get Ingtar and... Asmodean, I guess? Literally can't think of any others, lol) and so we might see this plotline pop up again once we have the time to spend with one of our mains bonding with a character who ends up being a Darkfriend.
Potential candidates: Lanfear ("Light help you, Rand al'Thor" - calls upon the Light to give him aid?), Asmodean, Liandrin (via her relationship with Nynaeve)
11. "Lanfear, Lews Therin, and Ishamael were inseparable before the War of Power" kinda implies to me that... Lews didn't meet Ilyena until after the War of Power had begun? I really am curious about what they're planning to do re: Ilyena. She was LTT's main focus in the books, but hasn't even been mentioned by name yet in the show. I mean, in the books, she was one of the classic Fridged Wives ever tbh, so I certainly don't mind some adjustments, but I am VERY curious. And with what the precise timeline of it was, in this version of the story.
12. I'm thrilled that Seta and Renna were killed off, tbh. I'm hoping it means that the second circus plotline is just as dead as they are. It was... genuinely one of the Worst Times that I ever had reading any PoVs in the entire series. But Egwene wanted to kill Renna in the books too! She only didn't because Nynaeve stopped her! And Nynaeve's not here. So all that felt pretty in-line with the book characterization.
And it gives Egwene a big moment here, which is good because... honestly, she doesn't do that much in TSR that I can think of? She... trains, mostly, lol. She doesn't get any huge moments like this, as far as I can recall. That is maybe the one reason that I can think of for sending the Wondergirls back to the White Tower, to give Egwene the Big Moment of her Accepted test. But Egwene's next big thing is really becoming Amyrlin, from what I remember. Am I forgetting some stuff from TSR or TFoH?
Rand has Rhuidean and becoming Car'a'carn
Nynaeve has Moghedien (and maybe Egeanin, if they do that plotline - they might have the Seanchan take next season or two off to 'regroup')
Mat has Rhuidean and visiting the foxes
Perrin has the battle of the Two Rivers
But Elayne is mostly Nynaeve's sidekick in Tanchico, from what I remember, and Egwene is mostly just tagging along with the Wise Ones and training. They can get some cool stuff out of her learning to be a Dreamer but there isn't really a 'climatic moment' in that in TSR or TFoH that I can think of.
(I wonder if the Birgitte bonding might happen next season? because they'll want to show Moghedien's threat level and what she does to Birgitte is a pretty good show of force)
13. Talking about how the Mat & Rand relationship is more complex than Mat & Perrin's -- this is very true to the books, of course, (until Perrin became Everyone's Closest Friend in ToM/AMoL) but it also feeds into Mat being a part of Rand's storylines next season (and probably all/most of s4) while Perrin goes back to the Two Rivers for most of s3. Mat and Rand's relationship is going to be more relevant, so it makes sense to load it up with more tension and more complexity. And given how close they've made Mat and Rand, I suspect that their storylines may dovetail even more in the show than they did in the books (and they already did a LOT in the books). And they might even continue to TALK about all the trauma that they have in common instead of being right next to each other and never having a conversation about it.
14. Mat being Rand's only hope being connected to the Horn and connected to the unhealing wound that will eventually kill him in Shayol Ghul... they really have twined Mat and Rand's narratives more tightly than the books did, which is delightful (especially with Mat being a Hero of the Horn in this version of the story, which means that Mat and Rand hang out together in TAR between incarnations).
It does make me very curious if Olver is going to exist in this version, since Mat is now not just tied to the Horn by ta'veren coincidence but by his own nature. Olver is kinda an easy character to cut, since he only ever does two things: a. gets Mat trapped in Ebou Dar so that he can get locked into his fate & b. blows the Horn in the Last Battle. If they're doing something different with Mat & Tuon, then Olver might not be needed for the first thing. And there's no reason for Mat not to blow the Horn himself in the Last Battle.
Narratively, because they HAVE been winding Mat and Rand's stories more tightly together, it would be pretty unsatisfying for Mat and Rand to separate in s4 (or s5?) and then literally never see each other again until they get a five-minute conversation in, like, ep 4 of season 8, so I suspect/hope that the show will find ways to let them reunite sooner than that. I mean, it was pretty damn unsatisfying in the books, let me tell you.
15. The show did such a good job setting up the Two Rivers storyline for next season, imo. I love that they put together Perrin's two "whitecloaks crimes" into the same issue and that Dain witnessed it first-hand instead of going after Perrin based on hearsay. I think we'll potentially see a real exploration of Perrin's guilt over Laila vs his inability to feel guilty about killing Bornhald next season. Plus adding Faile into the mix is likely going to make Perrin feel even guiltier (and I believe that Slayer is confirmed as well? It's gonna be busy in the Two Rivers for Perrin). I think we might get the 'trap' for Faile next season and it'll be what make Perrin realize that he has feelings for her but I don't think we're getting the quickie wedding. That feels WAY too fast.
16. It's hard to talk about Hopper's death without spoilers! Because this is very much not the end of Hopper's storyline. I'm expecting that Hopper is still going to be Perrin's teacher in the wolfdream, so we're probably going to see him just as much next season as we did this season, if not more. What a good actor in that dog, though, wow. Such a good start towards Perrin at the end. Hopper has been so delightful and I've loved what he's added to Perrin's storyline.
17. @markantonys did a really good post on the differences between why book!Mat thinks of himself 'not a hero' vs why show!Mat does, and I just want to link it here and co-sign. But that's really why this moment in the show, for Mat, works for me so well.
All of the characters, while they do have a core that comes from the books, are affected by the changes that the show has made. And Mat has been particular affected, because the realities of television impacted his character more than most due to the recasting, etc.
But even apart from that, Mat is different because he has gone through different experiences: he's known for over a year that one of them would be the Dragon so when he reunites with Rand, knowing that Rand's the Dragon, he's not going to have the same reaction that he did in the books because he has had time to adjust to the idea and it's not a nasty surprise.
Mat has a different relationship with heroism in the show because we lost our original Mat due to the shooting delays of Covid, and we had to leave Mat behind at the Waygate, meaning that he abandoned his friends out of fear. That profoundly changes his trajectory and means that a lot of work needed to be put into building his character back up again. Show!Mat NEEDS to be a Hero of the Horn in a way that book!Mat never did, because it provides external validation for him coming through the pain and loneliness and guilt and shame that he has been living in for the past few months.
18. After checking discussion on the subreddit, it is GENUINELY fascinating to me how many fans misremember book!Mat as getting his own past lives' memories rather than getting a mishmash of (mostly) war memories from the random people who visited the 'finn. I do think it's possible that this moment HAS been meant to replace that and Mat gets to use his own memories for all his general'ing needs, but it's also possible that these memories are going to fade after a while (and maybe that's the drive that makes Mat go to the 'finn, instead of asking for his memory-holes to be filled, he wants his past lives' memories back?). Mat does have some ancient memories that get triggered a couple of times in the early books (before Jordan was planning to send him to the 'finn, imo, and when Mat was going to be the one to go back to the Two Rivers) but those are not the same as the memories that the 'finn gave him.
19. We're also seeing a bit of LTT foreshadowing here, I think, in seeing how Mat remembering some of his past lives gives him access to fighting skills that he didn't have before. So when Rand starts pulling from LTT's memories, viewers can go back to this scene and connect the similarities.
20. Uno is Gaidal Cain! (from what Rafe has said in interviews) Good for him! I wonder if they're going to split up the 'dream conversations' next season and have Uno be the one who talks to Perrin and warns him about things, since they already have an emotional connection, while Brigitte is the one who runs across Egwene & the other Wondergirls (I absolutely do not remember the timeline of any of that, to be frank). I believe also, from what has been said, that this is not the final Birgitte actress, which is why they didn't focus on her much. Maybe we'll get Uno and Perrin hanging out in s3, and then Birgitte's storyline in s4?
21. I really am wondering how they plan to play out Rand's romantic situation in s3. There are still quite a few show-only viewers who are invested in Rand & Egwene as endgame, but also quite a few show-only viewers who clocked what a romantically-framed introduction that Rand and Elayne just had to each other. I don't want the show to rush Rand and Elayne's romance, so I'm still leaning towards them not starting anything next season, with the focus in the initial episode before they separate being on Rand and Egwene's breakup, and then Rand and Aviendha coming together over the course of s3 but... that really was a very disney-princess Romantic (TM) introduction shot, very "Eric meets Ariel" in The Little Mermaid (someone made the comparison using screenshots).
22. Did Suroth die? We don't actually see a body. This may be a situation where it was left ambiguous because they don't plan to have her in s3 and the actress might not be available when they do need their Seanchan antagonist again, so safest to leave her in a quantum state.
23. I am absolutely imagining the rest of the Forsaken watching Rand and Ishamael's encounter and then immediately fleeing once they see Rand take down Ishy, with Moghedien being voluntold to stay behind to talk to Lanfear.
24. Hmm, thinking about Masema. So Masema watches Ingtar get cut down by the Seanchan soldiers, he watches Perrin's friend Mat open the box to the Horn and then rush off to deliver it. And then he sees the dragon on the tower at the end. So he's seeing this huge difference between what a normal lord can do, and what was accomplished by the Dragon and his people. I'm not sure how in-depth we're going to be going with the Prophet of the Dragon storyline, but we definitely had seeds planted for it here.
25. We also seemed to have an interesting progression of who stands next to Rand, where, and when. Because first Rand is up alone on the ledge (while everyone has a group hug behind him), then we see Mat revealed to one side while Egwene steps up on the other. Then Nynaeve and Perrin join together, between Rand and Egwene. And in the final shot of them, we see that Elayne is standing between Mat and Rand.
I'm not going to put any particular meaning on any of that (at least at this time), just noting it.
It's a great shot.
26. I wonder if Ishy gave the others like, a short presentation on What This New Age Is Like.
That was such a good season of television! I'm really looking forward to what they're going to do with TSR, it's one of my very favorite of the books.

I understand why it happens, but it's kind of striking how quickly fighting vampires on Buffy goes from being something that only the Slayer can do at all ("she alone will stand against the vampires", as the opening narration tells us in the first two seasons) to something only the Slayer can do well (meaning that other people can try but they'll risk getting hurt or letting vampires escape), to something that only the Slayer can be trusted to do properly (even if it might seem superficially that other people are doing okay) and then finally to something so mundane that pretty much anybody can do it, with or without any special powers.
The pair of mid-season 3 episodes I've reached during my current rewatch (Gingerbread and Helpless) almost feels like the last time that the writers will really take seriously the initial premise that being able to fight vampires is not something anyone can be expected to manage if they just put a little effort in. Both of them feature as plot points the idea that being able to fight vampires makes Buffy somehow uniquely special (which is perhaps one reason why Faith doesn't appear in either one of them). And yet, if anything , they already feel a little anachronistic at this stage in the show's history.
In Season 1 or early Season 2, the idea of Joyce accompanying Buffy on patrol as a sort of impromptu mother-daughter bonding event would have felt ridiculous (and not just because Joyce had no clue that Buffy was the Slayer or that vampires even existed) and it's clear in Gingerbread that we're still meant to think that it is. But it's a little harder to accept that when we've seen Buffy going on patrol while casually chatting with Willow just a couple of episodes earlier, or when we know that Willow, Oz and Xander spent all summer fighting vampires without sustanining any significant injuries. If it's okay for them, why can't Joyce tag along while Buffy's on patrol? (It's presumably not going to lead to her trying to burn her daughter at the stake every single time.)
Equally, the test that the Watchers' Council subject Buffy to in Helpless -- in which she is robbed of her powers and forced to fight a vampire without them -- is meant to be cruel and arbitrary. But by Season 7 the writers will decide that expecting a bunch of teenage girls with absolutely no special powers to be able to fight vampires is, in fact, a perfectly reasonable thing to do. And as the show progresses, more and more people without powers will do just that. Indeed, the conclusion of this very season will upend the show's premise by having Buffy's classmates take on a small army of vampires at their graduation ceremony.
In fact, vampires as a serious threat at all become increasingly rare in the show, starting from around this season. This season's main vampire adversary Mr Trick has been relegated to a subordinate role after less than a full episode on his own devices, and this is a role he will only manage to keep for a few more episodes. Despite a fun first appearance, Trick has never really managed to make an impression in the way that the Master or Spike or Drusilla or Angelus did. I'm honestly not even sure when exactly Buffy first learns his name. This season's Big Bad, the Mayor, is the first primary season villain not to be a vampire, and in fact no vampire will ever get to play this role again.
(Vampires in general start to become so quotidian and non-threatening that by Season 7 the writers resort to the rather embarrassing measure of introducing a brand new special type of really dangerous vampire, with decidedly mixed results.)
I might be missing a couple of names, but I think the list below covers every single speaking vampire character that appears in more than one episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Darla (first appears in Season 1, last appears in Season 1)
The Master (first appears in Season 1, last appears in Season 3)
Angel (first appears in Season 1, last appears in Season 7)
Luke (first appears in Sesaon 1, last appears in Season 1)
The Anointed One (first appears in Season 1, last appears in Season 2)
Spike (first appears in Season 2, last appears in Season 7)
Drusilla (first appears in Season 2, last appears in Season 5)
Dalton (first appears in Season 2, last appears in Season 2)
Lyle Gorch (first appears in Season 2, last appears in Season 3)
Mr Trick (first appears in Season 3, last appears in Season 3)
Wishverse!Willow (first appears in Season 3, last appears in Season 3)
Tom (first appears in Season 4, last appears in Season 4)
Harmony (first appears in Season 1, first appears as a vampire in Season 4, last appears in Season 5)
Sandy (first appears in Season 3, first appears as a vampire in Season 5, last appears in Season 5)
And what's striking about this list is that we have, less than a third of the way through the show, already met almost everybody on it. The only two recurring vampire characters with speaking parts who haven't appeared at least once already as of The Wish are Harmony (who we've met, but not yet as a vampire), Sandy (who we'll meet as a human in just a few episodes), and 'Tom', a character so unimportant I had to look his name up on IMDB because it is never spoken in the script for either of the two episodes he appears in. (He's one of Sunday's goons who's later captured by the Initiative, if you were wondering.) More recurring vampires have already appeared for the last time than are yet to appear, with still a hundred episodes left to go.
Yet, at the same time, (unnamed, mostly harmless) vampires will actually appear in almost every episode of Buffy until the show ends. Season 3 is actually the first season of the show to feature a vampire on-screen in every episode. The season where vampires appear least is actually the first: there are four episode of Season 1 with no vampires at all, and only three other episodes where that's true (one in Season 2 and two in Season 4). Perhaps that's why Season 1 is able to take them seriously as an obstacle.
Buffy will continue to be a show where vampires feature heavily after this run of episodes, but it won't ever really be a show where the audience is expected to find them particularly menacing. Even in The Zeppo, the very first episode after these two, it feels telling that the supernatural threat Buffy is worried about Xander being exposed to -- and the dangerous enemies she and the other Scoobies fight in the background while we follow Xander around town -- are demons, not vampires. Because as much as the show wants us to think that Xander is the "Jimmy Olsen" of the group, by this point it's stretching credulity to suggest that even he would be seriously troubled by something as unimpressive as a mere vampire.

SINCE 2010 MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
The band sings in a line at the iCarly studio to do a soundcheck for What Makes You Beautiful. YN stands in the middle with Harry as they sing the chorus.
YN was honestly pretty excited to be on the show, she has a secret love for acting. She first dabbled in the art when her secondary school teacher encouraged her to audition for the school’s production of Grease. The moody teenager instantly thought it was stupid and embarrassing (thoughts she didn’t shy away from telling Louis when he auditioned). Even though she was against the idea of acting herself, she still went to go support her best friend as he tried out.
She instantly regretted it when the music teacher got all excited at the sight of her, over the moon at the thought of YN actually participating. So instead of telling the woman that assuming made one look like the first three letters of the word, she sighed and trudged her way up on stage to sing Hopelessly Devoted.
The next day, she furrowed her eyebrows at the girls who glared at her as she walked down the hall. One even had the nerve to bump harshly into her shoulder as they passed her. As YN was about to throw down her books and pull the blonde girl’s hair out of her head, Louis lifted her up and spun her around in a tight hug from behind.
“I can’t believe it! I didn’t think we’d actually get the parts! I mean, of course you did because even though I tell yeh your singing’s shit, it’s actually pretty good. Oh mate, this is so excitin’. S’kinda like our big break in a way. Just think, when we’re famous and all tha’, people are going to interview us here and—”
“Oi! Wait, wait, wait. What the hell are yeh going on about?”
“Did yeh not see the roster?
Next thing she knew, YN was shoving her way through the hallways to see that the cast list was hung up on the bulletin board outside the theater. Her eyes started at the bottom, hoping to see her name as Diner Girl #2 and praying it wouldn’t be next to the role she dreaded.
She scanned the paper until her name was the second from the top right under Louis’s. After following the dotted line to the right side of the paper, she nearly passed out to find she got the role of none other than Sandy.
She wasn’t blonde or skinny enough like the other girls who auditioned. She wore beanies, ripped jeans and eyeliner. She covered her body any chance she got and there was no way they were going to force her to wear a dress, even if it only showed her ankles.
After a few stern words to the music teacher and many words of encouragement (with reassurance of an understudy if YN wanted to drop out) back to her, she found herself secretly enjoying the role. She wasn’t scared to be on stage from being with her rock band for a little over a year, but she came to realize that acting wasn’t all that uncool as it was made out to be (not that she’d ever admit that though). If anything, it made her desire to be on stage grow even more.
So after the band finishes their song, the room claps and cheers in excitement. As they go about the scene, YN tries not to stare in awe at all the lights and cameras around her. It’s not like she hasn’t been exposed to this type of equipment before, she’s used to it now more than ever, but she’s just too caught up in her secret excitement of professional acting.
While the iCarly team goes to get sandwiches for the band, it was time for Gibby to occupy the band with his “sister’s” One Direction scrapbook. Even though her role and lines aren’t that major, she still tries to make her actions flow out naturally while simultaneously focusing on not messing up.
Harry turns to YN and asks, “Is there any water around here?”
“Um, over there.” She points over to the water bottle on Freddie’s camera equipment cart. Harry notices the decorations on the bottle’s pink covering. “Heh, handguns.”
After taking a drink, he makes a playful handgun motion with his hands. It makes YN shake her head with a smile on her face, her infamous eye roll coming out to make an appearance that he absolutely loves so much.
“And YN,” Gibby nervously coughs. “If you can just briefly mention how much you love Gib—erm Gurbie. I know she would really appreciate that.”
...
In their next scene, before they get ready to perform for the iCarly livestream, Harry sits on a chair in the middle of the room as he coughs badly with his arms over his stomach. YN stands behind Harry’s chair as she rubs his shoulders, pretending to comfort his sick form.
“I feel cold.” He coughs out.
“And thirsty.” He groans into his chest.
“Can somebody hold me?” Harry looks up and back at YN with a pouty lip.
YN, Louis and Niall all back away a bit with a collective no. It almost makes her give in by how good his acting is and the way his make-up was done makes his performance even that much more believable.
And when Louis suggests that Harry drink some more water, it’s eventually revealed that Carly has unintentionally given him jungle worms through her water bottle.
Gibby tries to keep his cool demeanor for the sake of impressing YN but he eventually just comically starts crying his eyes out in a seat at the corner of the set stage. YN’s grateful when the director yells cut! so she can finally let out a laugh at the sight.
...
YN stands behind the monitors with the rest of the band as they watch Harry act out a scene in Carly’s bedroom. He’s “bedridden” only for wanting to be catered to and pampered by Carly. It’s been such a fun experience working on a TV show so far and YN’s mood has been up on Cloud 9. Not to mention how Harry’s a better actor than she initially thought. She remembers him telling her all about how he played Elvis when he was primary school so that therefore makes him an Oscar award winning actor.
Just as her mind starts to wander into thinking of them doing other acting jobs further in their careers, her heart sinks a bit when she sees him reach out for Miranda’s hand and look at her lovingly. YN knows that it’s all for the scene, it’s all acting. She reminds herself that he’s not really infatuated with her and it’s all for a children’s TV show.
So why does she feel jaw lock at the sight of him smiling at the actress like that? Wasn’t that smile only meant for her as she says something witty?
She knows she shouldn’t feel this way about Harry, about her band mate in which she was not allowed to date under any circumstance under the band’s management contract.
It’s not like he feels the same way anyways. At least that’s what she keeps telling herself.
...
At the Groovy Smoothie, Liam talks about how the band might have to cancel the shows they have in San Francisco due to Harry being ill.
Sam is the one to point out that only reason he’s still in bed is because he’s merely acting sick just to keep being waited on hand and foot by Carly.
“No, that can’t be it.” Carly shakes her head dismissively.
“No, that actually makes a lot of sense.” YN points a knowing finger at the blonde girl.
“What do you mean?” Niall asks from her left.
“Sam’s right. If I was being treated the same way Carly has been treatin’ Harry, I sure wouldn’t wanna leave.” YN shrugs as she mindlessly plays with her pink straw.
“I know a way we can get Harry up and at it again.” Freddie smirks.
“Hit him with ol’ butter sock?”
“Sam!” Carly scolds her best friend.
“Did she say butter sock?” Zayn starts.
“Is that a sock?” Liam continues.
“Full of butta’?” Louis furrows his eyebrows.
Once the group decides that the way to get Harry out of bed is to think he’s being replaced in the band, Carly and Freddie get up to get more smoothies for everyone. YN takes the opportunity to slide into Carly’s seat and lean over to Sam.
“Hey, can I ask yeh somethin’?”
“Sure, what’s up?”
“So...” YN glances over her shoulder to make sure the other boys are too busy in their own conversation to pay attention to them. “How exactly do you use a butter sock?”
The laugh track plays and a smirk tugs itself onto Sam’s lips. She throws an arm over the pop star’s shoulder and lets out a content sigh, “Oh do I have so much to teach you, my friend.”
...
Harry sits in the iCarly studio in his pajamas and robe as he watches Gibby singing with the rest of the band as they rehearse What Makes You Beautiful with a horrified expression. It didn’t take that much acting on his part as he watches his crush’s hand be taken in Gibby’s, lifting their joined hands so she can give a twirl.
He can’t help his eyebrows furrowing at the sight of her smiling and laughing up at the ‘new’ band member. Wasn’t he the only one to make her smile and giggle while they’re performing? Wasn’t the silly interactions during a song solely meant for them two?
He reminds himself that it’s all for the scene, it’s all acting and nothing more. He keeps telling himself that he’s not actually getting replaced in the band by this guy, but it sure feels like it at this point as he watches his crush give the actor a playful roll of her eyes.
Once Harry hears his cue, he wastes no time standing up and snatching the microphone out of Gibby’s hand. After promising that he’s feeling better enough to perform for the live stream and leaves the room, the people in the room cheer at the success of their plan.
“I can’t believe that worked!” Freddie sighs out with a smile.
“Wait, what worked?” Gibby asks with a mix of confusion and hurt. Everyone falls into a comedic silence and YN puts a comforting hand on the actor’s arm, giving him a sad smile.
...
The last scene they have to film is the band actually performing on the livestream. The cast and crew members of the show are all on the studio set as they prepare for the shot.
As YN is getting some last minute touch-up on her makeup, she tries not to pay too much attention to the way all of the females are surrounding Harry as they chat amongst themselves. This kind of attention surrounding him isn’t new at all and she finds that that bugs her the most. She knows aside from her, Harry gets a lot of attention, he's able to hold everyone he meets in the palm of his hand. He has people wrapped around his finger the second he starts talking to him but in the best way possible. It’s a natural reaction that one has no other option but to be pulled into.
So why does this icky, itchy feeling scrap its way under her skin at the sight of him talking to her again? YN knows she truly can’t be mad at Miranda (and thanks to all of her media training, the actress doesn’t suspect a single bad vibe from her) but she has no one else to blame, no one else to point the finger at, and she certainly won’t be accusing herself for her own jealous feelings.
YN doesn’t want to think about how he might actually be developing a crush on the TV star. Was he merely acting while staring at Carly with heart eyes? Holding her hand with the same ones that would brush stray strands of hair away from her face when they were prancing around on stage? Or flash her a soft smile like the one he would give her when she ranted about a new song idea she wanted to write? She’s starting to doubt herself, she doesn’t know what to think.
But what she fails to realize is the fact that the same exact thoughts have been swimming around Harry’s head all day. YN doesn’t think much about the way she talks with the young actors from the show or the way she smiles brightly at something Nathan Kress said. She doesn’t what how his blood boiled at the sight of her hand on Gibby’s arm during their last scene or how she laughed, her eyes squeezed shut in the way he loves, at a joke the actor made after the director yelled cut!
So as the band waits backstage for their cue to make their way on the set to perform, Harry’s eyebrows shoot up when he feels a poke to his cheek, the same spot where his dimples appear when he smiles. YN feels the warmth in her chest come back when his dimples dig into his cheeks.
“Yeh did really good today,” YN whispers and he’s convinced she knows that flattery from her is his kryptonite. “To think that y’could’ve become a triple threat if yeh weren’t so shite at dancin’.”
Harry playfully pulls in his eyebrows and drags out a “Hey,” and it has its desired effect. Too cheesy to admit to himself, his knees go weak at the sight of her smile. “Heard we got the day off tomorrow. Wanna maybe go doing somethin’? Explore LA a bit?”
“Sorry, H but I can’t. ‘Ve already got plans with someone else actually.” And his heart sinks for the nth time today. He just hopes that it wasn’t any of the actor blokes from today.
“Oh, yeah. No worries. ‘Nother time then.” He gives her a tight lipped smile. She scrunches up her nose and looks forward as she hears their cue coming up soon.
“Yeah, this curly headed lad wants to take me explorin’ around LA. Just hoping he doesn’t take me bloody hiking. Me wee legs can’t go up them steep So Cal hills.”
Harry tucks his lips into his mouth to keep the silly, love sick smile from appearing on his face. All of the weight has been lifted from his shoulders at the realization that she was merely teasing him the entire time.
“But what if there was a trail he really wanted to take a look at? One he’s been dying to check out since coming to California?”
“Well he best be prepared to carry me the rest of the way down then.” She playful squishes his bicep through his blazer. “And by the looks of it, don’t think he can.” YN tries to keep her giggle as quiet as she possibly can when he hand teasingly reaches for the ticklish part of her neck.
There’s no trail he’s been dying to see and he certainly wouldn’t have made her hike with him if there actually was one. As long as he gets to spend time with her, whether that be walking along the streets of the city or wasting the day away in a hotel room, that was enough for him.
The two of them try to keep their smiles and glances at each other at bay as they perform the band’s first single on the iCarly set, hopeful that it will only add to the performance rather than having fans suspect anything more.

s1 ep 6 rewatch notes
[yeah i am still doing these essays, everyone copes differently OKAY]
I wish i had the words to convey my love for the Simon-Rosh-Ayub dynamic when they’re sitting on his bed trying to talk about his video, not the Kim K. video. it’s an instance of one of the things i ADORE about YR, namely, the importance of the love and support of friends - “the gang is back together”. contra a lot of the teenage and adult movies that put romantic love on a pedestal and everything else goes to the dogs.
That shot of Wille set against the sky when the Queen leaves = is it the apocalypse or is it heartbreak and i'm not the only one seeing the religious imagery right?
“we haven’t done anything wrong.” Simon’s moral clarity, his unbreakable backbone - it’s a moment where it’s obvious the Court has no idea who they are dealing with. I’m not sure Wille even knows then.
Frida doesn’t get enough praise for her acting. that side eye of August as they cross in front of him loafing on the picnic table: sublime.
Another parallel I hadn’t seen before: Sara dresses up before dinner; she likes the image she sees of herself in the mirror. She is “someone she is not”, according to Simon (later that night), but she wants that false countenance. In S2, that same move will devastate Wille. But we have another Sara-mirror scene, in S2. Leaning on the Wille-Sara parallel, there’s something being done here about becoming who you are through artifice (dressing up ‘in costume’) or through love (revealing your true self). August (as opposed to Simon, i think …) ends up being a false or traitorous ‘coming into self through love’ for Sara.
Related … when Sara went to see August to confront him about the video, i have retrospectively imagined her as having planned what happened. But if you look at the scene as it happens, both Sara and August seem to just be playing the situation as it arises. Sara starts off by not even intending to tell August, I think that was honest. When she then confronted him about the video, she first asks why did you do this to Wille and then, how do you have the right, you destroyed Simon? none of it is about her. it’s when August asks her ‘what do you want’ - that i think the idea comes to her. And i think that explains her face after she kisses August - her revulsion at herself. it seems like a situation that spiralled out of control very fast.
i can’t really talk about the Sara-Simon fight scene because it’s my Point of No Return in terms of “This is a nice program to watch of an evening” and “These characters have become my entire waking and sleeping existence, is there treatment for this.”
in the scene that starts with them sitting on the floor in Wille’s room, there is that tender moment by the door, and one of the top two kisses and hugs in the whole of season 1 and 2 combined, punctuated with the forehead tap. and i’ve always thought it so lovely until this time i saw the “red flag” - the towel hanging on the hook - and it reminded me of the red ‘flag’ we see in the locker room every other time things go south.
the scene with kristina and wille in the car starts simply with him saying, “WHAT?” which a) comes straight out of fanfic; b) is hyper-realistic adolescent approach to dialogue but also c) actually shows that they are really close. as in, Wille might loathe his mother by the end of this episode, but also he knows exactly what she’s thinking and they can just skip all the usual staging aspects of conversation. it links, i now see, to the book scene, where wille admits that he can’t just throw out everything he’s been taught, b/c he’s internalized it so well
when K is lecturing W about all the public attention he’s going to get now, and how it will be even worse, it’s the same shot of him looking out the car window wishing he could be literally anyone else as in the first few minutes of s1ep1, after the club fight. and we see his reflection in the window, so we get him 'in double' - who he is IRL, and who he is seen to be by the viewer. very clever. very clever.

Daily Journey : Day 1
Tumblr media
This tumblr started with me just wanting to share my coding journey in November of last year.
No pressure of wanting likes, followers or anything like that. Just share in a safe place.
And I understand that now that has changed. Now I worry about the reach of my posts, I worry about people thinking I'm a failure and that I won't get things and likes.
And all this is useless in my life. I don't have to show anyone anything and I don't need to be liked, etc.
And I don't want that for myself.
So I thought about keeping my diary about this stage in my personal life private, as I already do with my emotions/days normally.
But I also think it might be cool to have that record here.
So, for now I'm here and overcoming my desire to start a tumblr from scratch (I always start something from scratch when I want to feel free). Now this idea is not so cool in my head. But I love seeing my old posts that I was thinking about giving up and now I'm in a better place.
Anyway:
Notes on the first day.
In general, I was very anxious, insecure because I don't know how to socialize with strangers who don't know what they're going to ask me. I need to know what is going to be said or know the subject to feel good. But it was nice and fun, they made it friendly.
We introduce ourselves in a fun way to get to know each other.
We learned more about project delivery and the like.
We had a 30m class where we talked about web introduction. Like mozilla, url, domain etc.
+++ I know that on tumblr the post photo dynamic is different, but I want to keep it standard. So I will follow my rules, because this is my account.
If you are reading this post, I wish you to be well, have discipline and consistency to achieve your goals.
Update notes:
As they leave the classes recorded, I went to watch it now and found a lot of doubts.
1. I paid attention on the recording (I don't pay attention live, maybe this will improve and maybe not)
2. I wrote down the questions
3. I researched each one and left some to ask in class because they want us to do this.
And now I'm feeling productive.
I didn't let it pile up, I did what had to be done and I'm ready for tonight's class.
I think I'll set the default of my posts for after rewatching the classes.
Have a great night, afternoon or morning.

what's even more unexpected than a season 5 announcement, is me actually getting back on my bullshit and thinking about max's parents. (yeah, i just rewatched parent's day and, yeah, i got a little teary eyed, don't fucking look at me.)
it's canon that max's parents are inattentive to him; they "don't care" about him. it's popular for people to headcanon that they are also physically abusive to him (despite no evidence supporting this in the show), and i remember a while back seeing some theories that his parents are actually foster parents. over the years i've come to dislike these theories, the former having nothing to back it up and the latter getting under my skin because of how the foster care system is in real life--broken, with children often falling into the hands of horrible people. i've come to really dislike media feeding into that reputation.
in trying to come up with my own ideas for max's parents, i started looking into marital traditions and the views of divorce in indian culture. max states in "camp cool kidz" that his parents left their home country (although i'm willing to bet the reason he gives isn't entirely true, if it's true at all), so we can assume that they were married in india. i found an article by shibani joshi, where she talks about her experience with marriage and divorce. arranged marriage is a tradition in many indian cultures and, according to joshi, india has one of the lowest divorce rates, and divorce can bring shame to families, particularly to women.
in her story, joshi makes it clear that she wanted to put her children first; that if she was really going to go through with divorce, it wouldn't be until after her youngest turned 18. she was afraid of what her family would think if she and her now ex-husband divorced. because of this, i'd be hesitant to make a similar case with max's parents; i wouldn't want to potentially smear a cultural tradition and anxieties of a group of people. with how max describes his parents, i wouldn't feel good about it (or perhaps i'm overthinking it).
however, what if his parents wanted to avoid those traditions? before i turned away from this fandom, i used to headcanon that they were young and naive (barely 20) when they had max. i could still see that being the case; perhaps neither of them wanting to go through with arranged marriages, despite that being a generational tradition in their families. consider max's parents leaving india to start over somewhere in america, similar to how joshi describes her father starting a new life in america.
this inevitably takes a turn for the worst, as they are still in those young "finding yourself" stages of life and, on top of that, are trying to settle into a new life in a new country with a baby. the marriage gets strained, and as the two parents take out their frustrations on one another, max is often ignored as a result. "i'm busy, ask your father." "i'm busy, ask your mother." communication falls apart and max is often forgotten about at school, the parents spending more time blaming each other rather than comforting their child. one parent signs him up for after school activities he isn't interested in doing because it's cheaper than hiring a sitter and neither parent is willing to compromise on their work schedules. his parents aren't involved in any aspect of his life, unless they are called in for it (parent-teacher conferences, "max was sent to the principal's office again"), because they are too focused on themselves and their own lives not meeting their expectations. eventually, max learns that negative attention is better than no attention at all. emotional neglect is still abuse, even if it isn't immediately noticeable.
i highly doubt anyone is going to read this, but to anyone who does: what are your thoughts? i'm 100% open to constructive criticism (especially if i've stepped on any toes in regards to culture and traditions, it's the very last thing i want to do) and anyone else's takes on max's parents. i definitely have other headcanons, but if i'm really hopping back onto my bullshit then i'll most likely share them another day.

My Clara Rewatch, Episode 1: Asylum of the Daleks
I'm going to ignore the silliness in this episode in favour of focusing on Oswin. Fabulous Oswin.
(But for one second, can I just say about how truly silly it is that the Daleks have a parliament? They're Daleks, they have nothing resembling a democracy. Are we supposed to believe they held a Dalek election? And why do they have an asylum when they exterminate anyone, including other Daleks, who show the slightest sign of imperfection by their standards?)
Anyway...
(Also I hate that Amy and Rory have this divorce plot offscreen, and the minisodes don't count. Springing this on us and then resolving it in one single episode was unnecessary. I love getting to watch Amy prove her love for Rory, but we've had plenty of that in s6 and s7a to come.)
Okay now to the good stuff: Oswin.
Tumblr media
"Day 363. The terror continues."
Oswin has been on a Dalek planet for nearly a year and is still holding strong. It really speaks to the strength of her character. (Especially when you know...)
I love that Oswin is boarding up her little hiding hole with planks of wood, as if those will keep out Daleks. Bless.
Tumblr media
We're first introduced to Oswin with the song "Habanera" from Carmen, the opera. Now I'm no opera connoisseur so I'm pulling from wikipedia here, like a proper English major: "It is set in southern Spain and tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery gypsy Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties, yet loses Carmen's love to the glamorous torero Escamillo, after which José kills her in a jealous rage. The depictions of proletarian life, immorality, and lawlessness, and the tragic death of the main character on stage, broke new ground in French opera and were highly controversial."
I don't want to stretch too hard, but I think there are some obvious parallels to Clara's story in there, intentional or not. But I do think there's something to be said about how Oswin is dressed in that bright red and at one point has a red rose in her hair (oh hey the inspiration for my username!) in that classic spanish tango style. Maybe that was intentional. I mean, Eleven does call her Carmen at one point.
Tumblr media
If Clara were on GBBO, she'd lose in the first round.
But is it not absolutely precious that she finds a way to spin everything in a positive light? "Made another soufflé... very nearly." That wasn't even close, my dear. "They came again last night. Still always at night. Maybe they're vampires." She finds a way to turn the trauma of her life, barricading herself from the universe's most deadly killing machines, into a little fantasy (a fantasy within a fantasy, you might say). "Happy birthday, mum. I did make you a soufflé, but it was too beautiful to live." Does it need saying?
The connection to her mom is already being established. Is Oswin's mother still alive, and this version of Clara got to have more time with her? Or did she lose her mother young, too, and is celebrating her birthday as one other way to stay connected to her humanity, her home?
Tumblr media
Anyway, she sleeps in a hammock like a pirate. Hot. (And Oswin, like Prime Clara, likes to wear rings. Details.)
Tumblr media
Carmen. Oswin. Roses.
I think this is the first time we hear the start of Clara's theme.
"I know a Dalek when I hear one, yeah." So Oswin Oswald, junior entertainment officer of the starship Alaska, has encountered Daleks before. She's seen things, she's done things. Even if this is her first trip out on this starship, somehow she's encountered Daleks. That's pretty cool. Why has Big Finish never done a story about Oswin? Get on that, BF. Phone Jenna.
There's a flavour of Everything Everywhere All at Once with this intro to Clara, this idea of what other versions of yourself would have done in different lives, with different choices and opportunities. Prime Clara was an unofficial nanny who always dreamed of travelling, and then became an English teacher while getting to travel the universe with the Doctor. Oswin became an entertainment officer on a starship, in order to travel the universe. Victorian Clara was both a barmaid and a governess, and immediately jumped at the chance to travel with the Doctor. Common threads between our Claras are very obvious: she's a people-pleaser, she likes to take care of others and make them happy, and she wants to see the world, the universe.
(Tangent: Is "Oswin Oswald" her full name from birth? Or was she also a Clara Oswin Oswald who ditched the "Clara" and started going by her middle name?)
-
DOCTOR: How can you hack into everything? It should be impossible. You're in a crashed ship! OSWIN: Long story. Is there a word for total screaming genius that sounds modest and a tiny bit sexy? DOCTOR: Doctor. You can call me the Doctor. OSWIN: I see what you did there.
The shameless Doctor/Clara flirting has officially started.
Side note, I love how Oswin's hacking genius is explained in The Bells of Saint John soon after this. It's not just Oswin being an entertainment officer who also just happens to be a tech genius. There's a specific plot reason for it, and now I wonder if Victorian Clara ever demonstrated any uncanny abilities with early technology...
-
Oswin saving Rory and interacting with the Ponds is very important to me, seeing as they're my three favourite companions of the show. (Plus, the fact that she flirts with Rory shows she has good taste. That said, if she had flirted with Amy I think the fandom would have combusted on the spot. Speaking for myself, at least.)
Now I totally hate the "I was going through a phase" line because come on we're past the point of describing bisexuality as a phase but thankfully they later fixed this, to some extent, by making it hard canon that Clara is bisexual and identifies as such.
-
Unrelated to Clara, but I adore how when Amy is hallucinating the people-Daleks, she hears a jazzy version of "Together or Not at All". Murray Gold strikes again with the genius.
-
OSWIN: Do you know how you make someone into a Dalek? Subtract love, add anger. Doesn't she seem a bit too angry to you? AMY: Well, somebody's never been to Scotland.
Aside from how funny I find this exchange, I just love how the one emotion we definitely haven't seen Oswin express the entire time is anger. She's shown us plenty of other regular emotions (and in fact, love–when talking about her mother) but we haven't seen a shred of anger from her.
Which is really important for what comes next... the big reveal that Oswin has been fully converted–at least physically–into a Dalek.
Part of me wishes she hadn't been converted. Imagine if we'd gotten Oswin escaping with Amy, Rory, and the Doctor? I would've had my three favourite companions (at least, a version of Clara) interacting as a trio. She could've stuck around for a few episodes before dying in time for the exit of the Ponds and the intro of Victorian Clara. I would've loved to see Jenna play off Karen and Arthur face to face.
But I have to come back to the fact that it's so perfectly set up. Right off the bat, Oswin's situation doesn't make sense. The lone survivor of the Daleks, alone for a whole year, baricading herself from them with planks of wood and surviving off soufflés that aren't edible and we never see her eating them, with ingredients she doesn't have. Every time we see her interact with the Doctor, it's through a very Dalek-like lens:
Tumblr media
And of course, we can write that off the whole episode as this just being Dalek technology so of course it looks Dalek-like. But after the reveal, you realize that of course, this is her actual POV.
And most importantly, we need the Doctor to never know what Oswin looks like so that Victorian Clara's death, her repeating the iconic line, and the Doctor finding out her middle name all create that big gut punch moment for him. We as the audience know both characters are played by Jenna Coleman, but the Doctor isn't supposed to know. And when I do the next Clara episode I have a whole thing about why this is so important.
Tumblr media
This just about breaks my heart. She finally sees the Doctor has arrived and she immediately runs to pack her suitcase. She's so committed to her self-imposed delusion that she still, to this moment, believes she's about to escape.
"Rescue me chin boy and show me the stars."
Tumblr media
It's absolutely heartbreaking hearing her say "I'm hu–" and hearing the Dalek voice finish "–man". Genius, though. And then you hear a Dalek cry for the first time ever and it's so incredibly unsettling because they're the embodiment of evil, of hate, and crying is not Dalek. Sadness and heartbreak are not Dalek.
Oswin has been depicted as the exact opposite of Dalek. When she starts crying, it's the one time she says "exterminate", when she lets it in for the first time, and it's because she's angry about what they did to her. She spent a whole year hiding from the truth of the unbelievable trauma she's been put through, partly because it's too much to deal with, but also because if she lets herself face it she will feel that anger, and they'll start to win over her mind. Oswin lives in delusion to protect herself and her humanity.
"Eggs... stir... minate..." isn't just a fun twist. She turned "exterminate" into something as harmless as a soufflé recipe. Oswin took the one word Daleks use the most, the one that, on Doctor Who, is the epitome of evil, and turned it into something human, something positive, something creative (even if she sucked at it) and that she associated with the love for her mother.
Oswin spent a whole year fighting a full Dalek conversion, while the rest of her crew couldn't fight off a partial one, and she refused to let them turn her into a killer. The pure strength of her will is incredible.
Tumblr media
I just adore these shots of Oswin crying, finally accepting the truth of what happened to her. Jenna knocked this out of the park.
As I said, crying is not Dalek.
Tumblr media
And then she decides that no, she won't let in the anger, she won't let them win, ever. She'll save the Doctor, the biggest enemy of the Daleks, and die as Oswin, a human.
Then she says her iconic line, "Run you clever boy, and remember." She breaks the fourth wall which, correct me if I'm wrong, is the first time it's happened on the show, until Twelve comes in to make that one of his rare quirks.
Tumblr media
That's my girl.

Character Dive of Wednesday Addams, The conflict of Purposeful Miscommunication
So I had a college assignment about conflict and the questions ranged from the problem to the resolve. I choose the character Wednesday Addams as the subject of this because quite frankly she was the first to come to mind. If you guys would like to discuss this further I'm more than happy to (I literally rewatched Wednesday for the 4th time for this assignment to make sure I covered my bases :) please enjoy) P.s. I also just wanted to write about Wenclair :3
What is one example of a conflict situation you have seen in films, television shows, or books?    I live by the old saying, ninety percent of problems are caused or indirectly caused by miscommunication. There is so much truth to that statement. One of my favorite conflicting scenes in media came from the Netflix show Wednesday. The show follows Wednesday Addams, from the Addams Family, as she navigates through her journey of murder mysteries happening around the school and newly discovered abilities.     Wednesday is an interesting character to say the least, she’s portrayed as this very stoic and standoffish girl. Deeming emotions as nothing but a liability. While we follow the strange murders of a monster, we see Wednesday get increasingly driven to solve who is behind them. She’s stubborn and prideful, not wanting to let anyone have a one up on her.     Where this all comes to a head and where a lot of her inner conflict begins is when she tricks her roommate, Enid, into going to investigate a house that might have some clues. Both girls get ambushed by the monster while investigating, nearly getting killed. Obviously, Enid is angry by the events. Sparking an argument between the two, Wednesday not seeing the problem as they both made it out alive, causes Enid to snap at her. Telling her that she has tried so hard to be her friend, support her, stick up for her, and be there for her when she needed someone, but Wednesday is never going to understand that. So, Enid leaves, telling Wednesday that if she wants to be alone so badly, she can be alone.
How could you apply restorative practices in the situation?    Luckly for Wednesday she does begin to see her mistakes, even if she is very reluctant about it in the beginning. Enid, luckily being the more emotionally inclined girl that she is, does go out of her way to still check on Wednesday. Knowing that the stoic girl tends to sulk in her solitude, more so now a days with that monster coming around. Although both are still angered with one another they we can see that being away from each other is getting to them.     The girls up to this point have built a friendship between them, a trust that quite frankly Wednesday isn’t used to. That’s why it takes her almost losing another person close to her to realize that she needs people in her life. She cries, something she hasn’t done for years because that fear became so real then. She does care about the people in her life, she is just very reluctant to let them in. At one point the girls do resolve their issues, Enid taking the first step after hearing of the unfortunate events. She moves back in with Wednesday and the two talk about their differences as individuals, contrasting each other but do accept one another as friends. Slowly taking down those invisible barriers, one duct tape at a time.
How could being vulnerable, having an open mind, and considering others help with navigating the conflict identified in the situation?    In this instance we had a case of purposeful miscommunication, which is equally if not arguably worse than accidental miscommunication. The root of the problem though comes from a seed of mistrust in people that the person of target had no fault in. And that is just life sometimes, we carry bad experiences with us into new stages of our lives and hurt the people that try to help us. Having the chance to be vulnerable though and open to new ideas of repair with the right set of people could be a solution for the miscommunication.     This idea does tie back to opening that wound of mistrust, of being honest with the feelings that were buried so deep. It is hard for some people to achieve these steps, but they just have to see that there are people out there willing to take that extra for them. Whether that stems from respect or love, those people are going to be there for them, no matter what mistakes they make, no matter the type of person they are. But you have to meet halfway. Compromise, and respect one another’s individuality for we each have our own strengths in different categories of life.

I finally made it to The Lodge eps in my Emmerdale rewatch 😱
Some thoughts:
-eps leading up to the lodge -
First I know Rob had largely proven to not be trustworthy for Aaron at this point and I know Aaron has tons of history with Paddy but I don't know why he instantly believed Paddy about Rob. Aaron knew that Paddy and Chas were willing to do anything to keep him away from Rob couldn't that have included lying too? Paddy told Aaron that Rob tried to kill him and that he threatened Leo and Rhona which is true (to a point) but Paddy also really took no blame in his actions towards Aaron or Rob. Paddy also threatened Rob, tried to expose the affair to Chrissie (which would have also affected Aaron), and started telling Aaron's personal history to Lawrence who Aaron had just scored a business deal with. Aaron knew some of that was going on yet he didn't think to question Paddy on his accusations about Rob.
I never for one second believed Rob would try to hurt Rhona and certainly never Leo. There's also nothing that makes me believe Rob wanted Paddy to die. He easily could have let him die in the grain pit but didn't. He was watching Paddy closely and shut off the grain machine quickly when Paddy ended up in serious danger. He also started taking his jacket off (seemingly to jump in to rescue Paddy) before he heard Andy coming and knew he'd find Paddy. Rob is an idiot (too often) and when he is scared panics and lashes out like a caged animal. Paddy kept backing Rob into a corner and he felt like he had no alternative. I'm not saying that what Rob did was okay but I do think sometimes he acts first and thinks later like what happened when he placed a hit on Chas and then scrambled to call it off.
Some things I think people need to take into consideration when they watch the Lodge eps is by the summer of 2015 Rob had already had his relationship with Chrissie severely threatened multiple times. It was threatened by Lawrence when they first arrived (hence the break in that he staged with Aaron). By the threat of the affair getting out and everything with Katie. By Chas. When Chrissie found out about the break in and kicked him out and they were on the brink of divorce. Lachlan threatening to tell Chrissie that Rob and him lied about his suicide attempt. Chrissie making out with Cain. Cain threatening to expose the affair. All of which happened in less than a year.
So by the time Paddy starts leaving notes and showing up at Home Farm and threatening to expose him and Aaron Rob is terrified of the truth coming out. He knows all it would take is one more thing to push Chrissie over the edge and end it all. But the thing is Rob was never truly scared of losing Chrissie as a person. It wasn't like she was the great love of his life and he feared losing her like he did with Aaron when all the stuff with Rebecca came out. It was that Chrissie and Home Farm was Rob's perfect little facade. Living in that house, living that life, and playing the perfect little straight husband kept Rob from really having to face up to who he is.
-The Lodge-
Often when I see people talking about the Lodge eps all of the blame for what happened is put on Rob but the fact is Aaron is also somewhat to blame for what went down there. In some ways it's like what happened with Katie which is also always put on Rob when Aaron was also involved.
It was Aaron's idea to go to the lodge. Aaron was even the one who picked the location in some remote area away from everyone. It was Aaron's idea to secretly record Rob. And I can't help but wonder what Aaron's grand plan for it all even was. Record Rob and then leave first chance he got then take the recording to the police and or Chrissie? I didn't even see a car there for Aaron how was he planning on getting out of there quickly with the recording? I just don't think Aaron thought any of this plan through. Also was he planning on getting Rob to talk about Katie and going to the police with that info? He had to realize if he did he'd go down for his part in it too right?
---
I think one of the things that hurt Rob the most at the lodge was that Aaron turned on him in a way he never did before. Sure they'd fought and Aaron had been angry and even threatened him before but never like this. And no matter what happened between them before this Rob always felt no matter how angry Aaron got he still loved him. But the things he said and did at the lodge made Rob believe Aaron truly hated him. Which in a way was sadly ironic because I think the lodge was where Rob realized just how much he loved Aaron.
I don't know why Aaron acted like the stuff with Katie that Rob told him at the lodge was brand new information when Rob literally told him what happened back in March.
Rob (march 2015): "we got into this big row and she fell" he didn't out right say he pushed her but like he specifically said they fought which could have meant physically.
I really wish the show (and some fans) would stop acting like Rob intentionally killed Katie or that Aaron is blameless in what happened then. Aaron chose to have an affair with a married man. Aaron chose to go to Wylie's on Rob's wedding day and when Rob wouldn't chose him he messaged Katie to come there. The only reason she was even there was because of Aaron. And Aaron chose to help Rob cover things up.
I think Aaron initially brought up Katie at the lodge with the intention of getting Rob to say something incriminating on that recording but later (after he knew the phone was dead) kept talking about her because he knew how much it hurt Rob and Aaron was angry and hurting and wanted to hurt Rob too.
---
For as much violence as people seem to remember the lodge for things didn't turn physical until Aaron threw the first punch at Rob and then jumped on him and Rob mostly just tried to keep Aaron off of him. It was only when Aaron kept coming at him that Rob broke the bottle on his head and afterwards when Aaron was knocked out he checked on him and looked really worried.
You can tell how betrayed Rob felt as soon as he found Aaron's phone and I think it really caused him to snap. I don't think he knew what to think or do at that point. The one person he trusted before anyone else and the one person he really loved had stabbed him in the back.
---
The convo that Robron have while Aaron is tied up is so painful it's hard to watch at points.
Rob: "stop looking at me like that" when he took Aaron's gag off. He can't bear the thought that Aaron hates him and can see it on his face.
Rob trying to get Aaron to believe him that he wasn't going to kill Paddy and he didn't mean for Katie to die. Why would Aaron's opinion of him matter so much if Rob didn't love him?
I still have a hard time seeing how Aaron just completely turned on Rob and doesn't trust a thing he says anymore and just blindly believes everything Paddy said. But I think part of it is that Aaron felt betrayed too. He felt like he loved Rob and was starting to trust him again and then this all happened and so it all hurts even worse than it would have in the earlier days of the affair.
---
Rob: "If this comes out I lose everything. All I've worked for." Rob was never afraid of losing Chrissie only what she represented.
Aaron: "So this is about money" - Aaron doesn't seem to understand it's about so much more than that but also part of the reason Rob cares about money the way he does is because he's had to make it on his own for so long. Money isn't just about nice expensive things to Rob it's about stability and proving something. Rob is often motivated by this need to prove himself. To Jack. To Andy. To everyone who has ever thought less of him. Being the rich important (straight) man in the big house was like sticking it to everyone who thought he wasn't good enough.
Rob: "I wish that was all I cared about. Don't you see it's you. Falling in love with you ruined everything " - what Rob really means is: "I met you and you changed everything." He just wasn't ready or prepared to deal with any of that change yet and so he went kicking and screaming into it.
----
Rob: "Do you really think that i'm that selfish, that I'm that psychotic that I would actually kill someone?" Rob only asking because Aaron's opinion of him matters more than anyone else's
Aaron: "Yeah."
Rob: (crying) "Let's find out shall we." goes to get the gun
----
Aaron is so angry about what happened to Paddy he's tuned out a lot of what Rob is saying and it so it doesn't matter if it's true or not Aaron isn't hearing him.
Rob is forever tortured by what happened to Katie it's evident in how he talks about her whenever she's brought up and he's always maintained he never meant for her to die.
I like to think that Robron had a better convo about Katie later some time in 2016 when they were both in a better place mentally and could really hear one another because a lot of what was said in the lodge was stuff they needed to talk about.
-----
I don't think Rob ever planned on doing anything with the gun the only time he ever even points it at Aaron is when Aaron (lies) and says he doesn't love him. I think Rob only even brought it with him back to the lodge was because he was trying to do like he did with Paddy and scare Aaron. Rob at this point was hanging on by a thread scared that everything he thought that mattered in his world was about to blow up in his face. He felt like he'd lost Aaron for good just when he was getting him back again. He was scared of losing Chrissie and the security and heteronormativity being with her represented. Scared of losing his home when he'd already been through that before when he was younger. Of losing his job after he'd just been promoted no less and having to scramble to make it like he probably did in his early days away from Emmerdale. Most of all he was afraid of having to face his sexuality and of everyone finding out about all his secrets. He wasn't thinking clearly at all.
----
Rob: "I don't know what to do." - I don't think he meant about killing Aaron I think he just felt so lost and confused with all of it.
Rob: "And you say that I'm the liar."
Aaron "What?"
Rob: "You said you loved me too remember. You remember? "
Aaron: (crying)
Rob: "So you were lying then? if you loved me you wouldn't put me in this position"
Aaron: (crying) "Of course I don't love ya. How could I? Just look at ya. You disgust me."
Rob: (crying) grabs the gun
Rob finally realizing how much he loves Aaron and feeling as though he's lost him forever while he's standing in front of him with the gun crying and after hearing that Aaron hates him.
Tumblr media
Paddy literally showed up and entered the lodge without even telling anyone he was there and I definitely don't think Rob meant to shoot him and certainly not kill him. The aftermath of that was Rob panicking like crazy because he had just shot someone when he had already been losing his shit over Aaron and couldn't deal with yet another problem.
If Rob really wanted to kill Aaron he could have done it any number of times before Paddy showed up particularly when Aaron was unconscious. He definitely could have killed both Paddy and Aaron after Paddy showed up and he'd already fired the gun. Yet he took the time to help Paddy.
Rob crying in the kitchen in a blue shirt is so reminiscent of the scene in the 2017 ep when he's crying in the kitchen after Aaron finds out about Rebecca. 😭
Rob: "I'm not a bad person." - it's like Rob is always trying to prove that to people while still trying to survive in the only ways he knows how.
---
Interesting that one of the side stories in the lodge eps involved Lawrence trying to fake being straight (by dating Bernice). Considering that everything with Robron was happening in large part because Rob was also trying to fake being straight and afraid of losing Chrissie for that reason.
Rob comes home and and hugs Chrissie like a lost little boy because again Chrissie and Home Farm represent stability for him not love.
---
I have mixed feelings over Aaron outing Rob. I'm not saying it's okay to out anyone but at the same time I'm not sure if Rob would have ever come out if not for Aaron. I think at the least it would have taken Rob much much longer to come terms with who he is. After what Rob dealt with from Jack I think he felt so much safer hiding that part of himself to the point he couldn't even really admit to himself who he was. He wasn't ready to think of himself as anything but straight for a long long time. I honestly think the lodge, Aaron telling Chrissie, and Rob getting shot all needed to happen for Rob to finally wake up.
---
I feel like a lot of people remember the lodge for the violence and how it's like one of the worst times ever for Robron but when I watch I see just how much they still love each other even at their darkest point. It's obvious how much Rob loves Aaron here and how much Aaron still loves Rob. They spent most of their scenes during this crying and in pain that any of it was even happening. It was killing them both. And no matter what they both were saying especially Aaron the reason it all hurt him so much is because of just how much he still loved Rob.
I know for some Robron was over after these eps they just could never get over how Rob acted here but I really wish people would remember that Emmerdale is a soap and soap characters aren't always confined by the same set of morals and standards we are in the real world. Soaps are about drama and a character may do something horrible one week but be forgiven the next this is especially true when we're talking about more important characters who've been around longer and get more screen time. Most characters on soaps aren't meant to be just one way. It's why you have characters like Rob, Charity, and Cain who have done villainous things but aren't written as solely villains.
Rob did a lot of messed up stuff during his time on the show (especially during 2014/15) and there's a lot of his actions I don't agree with and I get that some people can't forgive him but at the same time he's one of my favorite characters of all time who I relate to a lot. I feel like a lot of people particularly those who hate him only see Rob for what's on the surface or only his mistakes they don't see the complex man he truly is. It's part of why I love him. Rob is such a multifaceted character where pain and trauma and fear play a big part of why he does the things he does. He's definitely hurt a lot of people but he also loves more fiercely than most of the other characters on Emmerdale. He'd literally die for the people he loves.
Anyway if you read down this far thanks ❤️ I just needed to ramble. It's been a long time since I've seen the Lodge eps and I had a lot of thoughts. These were some good Emmerdale eps but definitely not my fav Robron eps. I can't wait till I can get on to something a lot more fluffy. I'm missing my 2016 Robron.
