I lost one of my chickens :( she was caught and carried away by a fox... I’ve been growing complacent about my chickens’ safety I think because we’ve only had one other attack before, a goshawk that swooped in abruptly (unsuccessfully), but no fox sightings nearby so I’ve been assuming Pandolf was a great deterrent. Which he is, just not foolproof. I’ve talked to some people in town about this and they were pretty philosophical about foxes stealing chickens, like “it’s the tribute we pay to woodland animals, it’s just a few hens here and there.” I don’t begrudge the fox for being a fox, if anything I have a renewed respect for foxes because everyone I talked to proceeded to give me their best / worst fox stories, and most of them involved foxes outsmarting humans (learning people’s habits / timetables, opening latches, faking a limp...) Still I feel terrible for my hen, she was only three. RIP Cordy :( You’ll be remembered fondly... (except by the cats.) I feel bad for the other hen too, who just lost her pal!
When I said that last thing, one of my neighbours jumped on the opportunity to try and convince me again to accept a rooster from him. He had a rooster baby boom last summer and I’ve been telling him for months that I don’t need a rooster, I don’t want to raise chickens I just want eggs, and his new argument was that a rooster would protect my hen (or if it comes to that, would heroically sacrifice himself rather than let the hen be eaten—I’m sceptical...) I asked around for a young hen but there aren’t any to be had in this season, so my remaining one is going to be alone until the spring, and my neighbour said she’d get stressed and male company is better than no company. (I wish I could ask my hen what she wants! Maybe she’s penning A Coop Of One’s Own as we speak.) I said the rooster was more likely to stress her out and harass her and he said nah they’re free ranging all day, it’ll be fine, and he’s young so your adult hen will boss him around. I was like, but then will he be any good at protecting her? etc. etc. and after a while I caved in.
When I told her about this on the phone my mum sighed “you’re terrible at saying no”—excuse me, I said no so many times and the guy just kept ploughing on until he could foist a rooster upon me. I’m good at saying no, other people are terrible at hearing it! I reassured her that I had only agreed to take the rooster for a short probationary period, and if he bothers my hen too much I’ll drive him back to his native farm. My mum was like “Drive him back? look I’m sorry I raised you as a city kid but there’s no need to waste gas on driving a rooster around, I’ll have no qualms about wringing his neck for dinner if he’s more trouble than he’s worth.” The rooster’s fate is not sealed though, if he is anywhere from vaguely useful to not actively problematic I’ll keep him, so we’ll see...!

The Gales pt 6
Kindle and Tohru, like many of the founding families will be aging into elders soon. It will be sad to see them age up, but first, we must celebrate their grandchildren's birthdays.
Little Anil got the clumsy trait while little Zeru got the loves the cold trait. I'm so glad that the Gale's second generation of kids are aging up becomes I'm excited to pair them up, lol. Soon the family welcomes the next grandson Titan to the family.
Now with three boys, Jon and Aqua will have to work hard on selling honey to make sure they can save enough for their boys to establish a decent household of their own when they reach the age to move out. I was excited to make Jon a beekeeper because it's my first time using that set from the sun and moon factory. I just hope it makes them money.
Meanwhile, since the status change I allowed Kindle and Tohru and the kids live in the main house, but eventually they will switch probably after the two teens leave the house. Kindle has started the basket weaving profession which I have fallen in love with.
Ivy is already helping with the household in preparation of running her own home, and Marco is practicing his romancing skills.
And now my lovebirds have aged up into elders. No more kids for them, but their family line is large and they honestly deserve a break.
While the two teens will make raising the two toddlers much easier in their golden years.
Aww...the kids are so cute!
Aqua has came a long way in learning to cook. She barely starts fires anymore. She is also mainly in charge of the store and Marco helps out as well.

One of your mid-week tasks to complete with Seokjin was to make some traditional kimchi, and before you had started, you were already excited. Actually, you found it quite coincidental that this would be assigned to you. When the cameras were off, Seokjin had led a bored atmosphere into an in-depth conversation about food. You learnt quickly that it was just one of his better traits; always feeling the need to lighten the mood.
To spread the added seasonings evenly, you’d poured the masses of chopped vegetables into a larger bowl of the floor. He slid his hands into plastic gloves and used all the strength of his arms to begin to churn the contents. As Seokjin began to act as a human whisk, you added additional ingredients to enhance the seasoning you’d already added. Picking up two chopsticks, you selected a small radish slice and fed it to him, “How is it?”
His playful moaning and emphasised nodding earned a chuckle from you. However as you were laughing at his honest reaction, you noticed his face begin to fall and almost twist in agitation. You watched as his arms begin to slow in their process, and so reached for the box of gloves to help him out, “You don’t need to worry, I’m okay!”
You frowned and swatted the air to make him remove his hands, “It’s fine, let me have a go.” He retracted his hand from the bowl and you plunged yours in their place. As you continued to stir, you looked up habitually to see Seokjin smiling, seemingly adoring you, “What?”
Seokjin’s smile softened as you picked up on his diverted attention, “You’re just... sweet,” you puffed a strand of hair away from your eyes, and watched it continue to fall back down as you pondered on his words. The rustling of his glove led to an uncovered hand reaching out for your face. As you paused in your churning, Seokjin pushed the loose hair behind your ear and admired your blushing cheeks, “There you go. Shall I have a turn now?”

As mildly introverted people, it had taken a little more than a few hours to fully open yourself to Yoongi’s company, more particularly to make any conversation you shared less awkward. After reverting back to childhood memories and a mutual love of the same films, Yoongi was quickly warming up to your presence.
It was strange to have to fake romance with another idol, especially with so many cameras. Kindling chemistry made your task much easier. Several days into your ‘marriage’, it was clearly time to shop for food items and other essentials, and as hesitant as he seemed, you were determined to make shopping as enjoyable for Yoongi as you could.
Without asking, he offered to push the trolley around the store and followed you diligently as you conferred on what to buy. At the very end of your journey, you spotted a large pack of bottled water that would easily have been enough for the rest of your time together. You shuffled and leaned down to the bottom shelf where the pack sat and slivered your fingers underneath to lift it, “Do you want some help with that?”
“Nope,” you grunted, struggling to lift it any further than a centimetre from the shelf. It was heavier than you’d anticipated, “actually, yeah.”
You grunted as Yoongi came to your rescue. He pulled up on the plastic packaging and aided you in placing it in the trolley, “Move your fingers,” he said. You looked at him strangely, and he smiled at your knitted brows, “they’ll get crushed! Move them!”
He jokingly scolded you, prompting you to tease a pout, “Don’t look at me like that!” He smiled, dodging your eye contact, “I’m only looking out for you.”

To wind down one evening, you made a joint effort to create a mini campfire in the yard. A small firepit, wood blocks and marshmallows was just enough to make a winter evening in the countryside more enjoyable.
On the backyard sofa, you reclined next to Hoseok. A blanket draped over your legs, but that along with the fire wasn’t enough to warm you up, “Are you cold? Here, take my jacket.” Hoseok offered, unzipping his branded winter coat.
You leaned away from him, rejecting his offer, “No way. It’s below freezing, keep it on. Could we share? Instead?” You nodded towards the blankets that kicked over both of your laps, and began to divide them more equally over you.
“Come a bit closer,” Hobi insisted, lifting his corner of the fabric to invite you under. You smirked at his natural generosity, and it wasn’t until he met your eyes that he noticed, “or morph into an iceberg if you’d like. Really, let me keep you warm.”
To add performance for the hidden cameras in the garden, you rested your head slowly on his shoulder. Hoseok, without much pause, slung his arm around you and shuffled his hand against your thick cardigan, “Comfy enough?”
You nodded in satisfaction, “Perfect!”

For a segment in an episode, you and Namjoon had chosen face masks as an activity to complete. As a self-proclaimed skin care fanatic, you were more than excited to pamper the man who had quickly become a close friend of yours.
To emphasise the couple chemistry, Namjoon sat opposite you, crouched onto a small wooden stool identical to yours. His chestnut hair was pushed back, tucked away under a bright yellow headband, exposing his tanned forehead to your silicon brush, “Let me know if it tickles too much.”
Your prewarning was met with a dimpled smile as you started to spread the cleansing mixture across his risen cheeks. Rose pink clay pleasingly matched his dark eyes that could only focus on you. As you carefully distributed the face pack over his skin, you couldn’t help but grin at his widened eyes that followed yours so diligently, “You know, the more you look at me like that, the more I’ll have to believe you have a thing for me.”
Namjoon giggled softly, looking away from you for the first time since you’d begun, “What if I did?”
You looked down at your lap, flattered at his response. If you’d learnt anything about Namjoon in the past few days, it was that his tone of voice changed when his sincerity was meant to be heard, “Well then, that’s something for us to discuss when there isn’t a camera across the room.”

It had been a while since you’d spent so long away from your dorm and your members; you couldn’t help but feel slightly homesick. The kind of homesick that kept you up at night was the worst. To stop you from stirring around in the sheets and waking Jimin, you hung your legs over the side of the bed and stared into the blackness.
“Everything alright over there?” A sudden, raspy groan startled you. Jimin had followed you in sitting up in his place, rubbing his eyes that were still adjusting to the darkness.
“Hmm? Yeah, just a little homesick. I didn’t mean to wake you up.” You whispered, wrapping the duvet over your legs. The night camera should’ve stopped filming a few hours ago, but Jimin and you still weren’t close enough to be completely open around one another.
Jimin’s fluffly morning cheeks fell at your confession, “Can I help at all? I really hate to see you down.” He spoke softly, and yet you knew he meant what he said. For someone you’d known for less than a week, his compassion was surprising but sweet.
You stuttered, looking for any way to tell the time. Midnight was far behind you, and the summer sun was yet to rise, “Don’t worry about the time. Whatever I can do to make things better for you, I will.”

Filming such a programme in autumn had its benefits in what activities it made available. In addition to it being your favourite season, you’d learnt that Taehyung grew up in a similar setting to you. Daegu suburbs hid many roads that led to farms and orchards, where both you and Taehyung had spent many hours picking harvestables and chasing younger siblings.
As the director had learned of this shared memory, she organised an opportunity for you to recreate your childhood together. An apple and pear orchard waited on the outskirts of Seoul for you, “If they’re big enough, I can make you an apple pie?” Your promise to Taehyung had spawned a determination to make the most of a chance you hadn’t had in years.
After your basket was near enough full with apples, you’d spent your remaining minutes searching for larger ones to pluck. The perfect green apple hung just a bit too high for your grasp, and watching your struggle, Taehyung approached you from behind, “Need a lift?”
As you nodded, Taehyung squatted to wrap his arms around your legs and raise you up to the branch where you were able to take the apple that had caught your eye. Placing you back on your feet was less successful as you stumbled upon meeting the ground. A small shriek led to his hand catching your back , securing your balance. A heavy sigh of relief hooked a smile, “You didn’t think I’d let you fall, did you? I’d never let you get hurt when you’re with me.”

When your time together with Jungkook was coming to an end, you chose to spend a night at a karaoke bar. As you both owned the title of main vocalist in your groups, friendly competition couldn’t be missed.
To make it fair, you agreed on the same ballad to see who could score higher, and your winning score of 96 was enough to induce all of the excuses from Jungkook, “I let you win to ease you into the competition! Good luck in the next round.”
Many different verses and choruses later, and the tie between you was clear. To finish the hour you’d paid for, Jungkook suggested a ballad duet. You took the red lyrics and he took the green. The enchanting mixture of melodies coated the room with a romantic aura; you couldn’t help but switch between the lyrics and Jungkook’s eyes.
“That was really... something.” A shy grin closed the music as you returned your microphone to it’s slot. From award shows and concerts you’d attended before, you knew well that his vocals were stunning. But if you knew that yours could match so well with his, you would have suggested a karaoke much, much sooner.
“It really was. Maybe we could slip into a studio sometime? I heard you write songs.” How he’d heard that was unknown to you, but you were more than glad that he did.

“Alright! Everybody in the car!” your dad Patton calls, loading the last suitcase in the trunk. He invited all the other sides to come with you on a little road trip to a nice place with lots of forests and mountains. You’re all going to have to squeeze into the minivan for a few hours and hope you don’t drive each other insane.
Logan gets in the driver’s seat because he doesn’t trust anyone else to navigate and Patton takes shotgun. You sit between Virgil and Roman and Remus and Janus take the back.
“Can I have the aux cord?” Roman asks.
“Absolutely not,” Virgil grumbles.
“Why not? You’re just going to have your headphones on the whole time anyway,”
“Well yeah but you’re also going to be singing really loud-“
“Not to worry everyone!” Patton pulls out a pack of CDs, “I brought my best collection of road trip music that I’m sure all of you will like!”
“Great job, Roman, now we’re stuck with dad music,”
“Hey! My dad has decent taste in music!” you say.
“Of course he does, Y/N,” Janus chuckles.

You’ve been on the road for a while now and everyone’s mostly settled down. Virgil’s looking out the window and hasn’t spoken much more. Roman’s chatting with your dad and occasionally Logan will add something in. Janus has been fairly quiet as well but tries to keep Remus entertained enough to not want to jump out of the car.
“Hey Lo could we make a pit stop?” Patton asks.
“No. We’ll get there faster if stay on the road,”
Virgil slips off his headphones, “Come on man, really? We won’t even take that long,”
“Alright, fine,” everyone cheers and Logan pulls into the next gas station.
Remus climbs over everyone and starts shrieking and running around the parking lot, “Hey guys, you ever wonder what would happen if you drank gasoline?”
“NO,”
You and Patton go in the store to grab some snacks while the others have stretching and bathroom breaks. You pick out everyone’s favorite candy and chips and put it in the basket. Logan’s patiently waiting outside the car for all of you to come back.

A couple more hours pass, and it’s starting to get dark. You’re beginning to get suspicious about what’s going on because it wasn’t supposed to take this long.
“How are we not there yet?” you ask.
“I promise you, I have followed every direction exactly. We will be there soon,” Logan replies.
“But Google maps said it was only going to take three hours…and it’s been five,”
“Nonsense. Maybe it wouldn’t feel like five hours if we hadn’t stopped,”
“Dude, it was only fifteen minutes,” Virgil points out. “Maybe they’re right. The GPS could’ve glitched or something,”
Roman bursts out laughing, “Ha! I can’t believe you got outwitted by a map!”
“I did not!” Logan pulls over so he can investigate. The GPS appears to be working fine, the battery is charged and it’s connected to the correct satellites. Why’s there an issue?
Janus coughs, “Would this be a good time to tell you that I switched the location at the gas station?”
“You did what?!”
“You are so stupid!” he cackles. “The town I switched it to has the same name but it’s in a completely different state! And you fell for it!”
“But Janus…” Patton looks at him disapprovingly. “I thought we agreed we were going to have a good ol’ family vacation,”
“Come on, it’s funny,”
“I’ll say!” Remus laughs. “We’re in the middle of nowhere! Let’s get naked and run into the forest!”
“NO,” Everyone scolds in unison.
You open the window and look around, “What are we gonna do, dad?”
“I don’t know honey,”
“Do you realize how far we are from civilization? Do you expect me to sleep out here?” Roman yells at Janus. “I refuse to get my beauty rest on mud!”
“Suit yourself, mud beds sound great!” Remus grins.
“Alright, enough,” Logan turns off the car and opens the door. “The situation is far from ideal, but we can figure it out. It’s pointless to drive to the nearest hotel, so I suggest we camp out here tonight and drive to our real destination tomorrow morning,”
“Camp out?! But we didn’t even bring tents!” Roman objects.
“No, but we can make them. We have blankets and can find some large sticks,”
Virgil’s eyes widen, “You’re kidding right?”
“I’m completely serious. I have read quite a lot about basic survival in the wilderness. I’ll take care of building a shelter and how about the rest of you work on making a fire,”
“Um…I don’t think any of us know how to do that,” you mumble.
“Simple. Find some rocks and a variety of sizes of sticks and logs and we’ll light a match to it,”
“Where are we going to get big logs from?”
“I brought an axe,”
“Excuse me?”
“I like to always be prepared,”
You and Patton set off to get the wood, since surprisingly he knows how to chop things. You find a small tree and he starts cutting it down and you gather some other sticks.
“I’m so sorry this happened honey, I know you were looking forward to this vacation,” he sighs.
“Dad, it’s okay,” you smile. “I’m still having fun and we’ll still be able to go to the cabin tomorrow, right?”
“I hope so, kiddo,”
When you go to meet everyone else, Logan and Roman have created an extravagant campsite. Roman insisted on making it look amazing even though Logan was only concerned about the essentials, but it certainly paid off. There’s a few mini tents set up and the start of a small fire.
You and Patton lay down the logs you cut on top of the kindling and help the others finish setting everything up. Remus refused to help make a tent since he wants to sleep straight on the dirt, Janus is starting to look a bit uncomfortable, and Virgil looks very uneasy.
“Hope you’re happy, Janus. We could literally die out here,” Virgil sneers.
“I’m actually…not,”
“Well…good!”
Janus winces, “I didn’t mean to ruin everyone’s vacation. I just thought it would be a little funny…”
You walk over to him and sit next to him, giving him a smile, “It was funny. But I’m glad you’re apologizing, I know you don’t do that much,”
“Who said I was apologizing? I’m just sick of seeing everybody upset,”
“Sure,”
“Alright everybody!” Patton shouts, getting everyone’s attention. “We’re all set up and got our fire! You know what that means!”
Virgil shakes his head vigorously, “Oh no, please, no-“
“CAMPFIRE SONG!!” Patton grins. “Let's gather 'round the campfire, and sing our campfire song! Our C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E S-O-N-G song!”
“You’re going to wake up bears of something!”
“And if you don't think that we can sing it faster then you're wrong! But it'll help if you just sing along!”
Roman and Remus join in, “C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E S-O-N-G song! C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E S-O-N-G song! And if you don’t think that we can sing it faster then you're wrong! But it'll help if you just sing along!”
You nudge Logan and Janus, “You gonna join?”
“Of course,” Janus rolls his eyes.
“You know I don’t sing, especially not ridiculous songs like this,” Logan reminds you.
“Come on, please?”
All of you stare at him, “Fine. Just this once,”
Everyone joins in this time, the night completely quiet except for your voices, “C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E S-O-N-G song! C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E S-O-N-G song! And if you don’t think that we can sing it faster then you're wrong! But it'll help if you just sing along!”

Chapter Three: The Beautiful Music We Used to Make
March 19th, 6:27pm
“Tae, I need an opinion,” you shouted from the bowels of your closet. “Can you come here a minute?”
You were digging through your unbelievably small collection of cocktail dresses trying to pick out something professional, but still flattering. There was no way you were going to attend this event without looking your absolute best. You already had the most gorgeous plus one ever, but it would take more than the great Kim Taehyung to make you feel confident in the presence of your ex-fiancé.
Min Yoongi.
You tried in vain for many years to forget about your failed engagement to him, but it haunted you nonetheless. Case in point, this fancy university function to honor Min Yoongi for his recent contributions to the Music and Performing Arts Department. Because of his generous donations, they were able to purchase a new grand piano and upgrade the stage and orchestra pit in the auditorium.
I guess becoming a successful musician is worth ending a five year relationship after all.
You swallowed the bitter thoughts and pulled another dress off the rack. Taehyung popped into your closet and actually felt the angst seeping out of your pores, and it aggravated him to no end. The breakup with Yoongi almost broke you, and Taehyung did his best to keep you in one piece. It was difficult from afar, but he managed to keep you focused on school and other things until you were healed enough to move on.
He hated that Yoongi kept slipping back into your life, and he wasn’t about to let this opportunity to confront the guy pass him by. He’d insisted on accompanying you to the event, and he intended to put every other man in the room to shame with his charm and good looks, including Min fucking Yoongi.
Taehyung took in the desperation mounting on your face and he decided to step in and help the damsel in distress before him.
Prince Taehyung to the rescue!
“Ttalgi,” he said softly. “Get your shoes on. We aren’t going to find what you need here. For an event like this, you need something special. Come on, let’s go.”
“Where are we going?” you pouted. “It’s already 6:30, Tae. Where could we possibly go at this hour to find clothes?”
“Omela’s, of course,” he grinned. “Where else?”
March 19th, 7:07pm
“That one,” Taehyung breathed out sharply. “It’s perfect.”
You glanced down at the glittering black gown you were wearing and you pursed your lips doubtfully. You’d tried on at least three other dresses, but for some reason, Taehyung was convinced this dress was the winner.
It was beautiful, you had to admit. The slinky material was accented with delicate beadwork and sequined appliques which wrapped up one side of your body and dipped down the other. The slit across your thigh was just revealing enough to still be in good taste. The halter top was a little dated, but Taehyung argued that vintage looks never go out of style.
You turned back around to face the mirror and your gaze met Taehyung’s in the reflection. The confidence etched across his features calmed your anxiety little by little. You twisted back and forth to inspect the different angles of your body and you had to admit, the dress looked pretty good on you.
“Oh, you look gorgeous, honey,” a sweet voice piped up from the racks. “Absolutely beautiful.”
You and Taehyung looked out across the cozy vintage stores and saw a lilac bun of hair bobbing between the aisles of clothing. Omela’s was a jewel of a store located just beyond the hustle and bustle of downtown. The big display windows housed a hodgepodge of mannequins adorned with eclectic vintage clothing from many different decades.
Ms. Omela herself was the very definition of eclectic, always dressed in mismatched clothing from various different styles. She just wore whatever made her happy, and Taehyung absolutely adored her. You stopped in when you could, if only to say hello to the bouncing ball of sweetness that was Ms. Omela. She emerged from between two racks of clothing carrying two more dresses, but when she saw you, she set them aside.
“Now that’s the one, isn’t it?” Ms. Omela sighed happily. “Oh, Taehyungie, isn’t she just a vision?”
“She certainly is, 아줌마 (ajumma/auntie),” Taehyung breathed out, his eyes boring into yours in the reflection.
“Thank you, Ms. Omela,” you replied sweetly. “I’m so glad you were still open. I didn’t realize I needed something this fancy until this afternoon. Bless you.”
“You know I’m always here, honey,” she cooed. “Besides, it’s always a treat when I get to see my favorite customer.”
She leaned over to pinch Taehyung’s cheeks and he blushed under her praise. The old woman had a soft spot for him, and he worshiped her. His love of vintage clothing was kindled in this very store on one of his visits to see you when you were both still in college. He’d seen a shirt in the window and once he got to the second rack in the store, he was hooked. They’d become fast friends and she never hesitated to set items aside for him, knowing that he’d love whatever she found.
“By the way, Taehyungie,” she remembered. “I have a few things you should look at.”
She disappeared through another set of clothing racks and made her way to the back of the store, and Taehyung stepped forward to pull you into a back hug. You both looked at each other in the long mirror and you leaned your head against his broad chest.
“So this dress, huh?” you murmured. “You really think this is the one?”
“Totally,” he replied while placing a kiss on your exposed shoulder. “You look stunning, babe. I can’t wait to see his face when you step in the room.”
“I’m not ready to see him,” you whined slightly. “It’s been almost 10 years, Tae.”
“I’ll be right there with you,” he assured you with a kiss to your temple. “Don’t worry. We just need to figure out which item is his.”
“It’s probably the kazoo,” you scoffed. “You know Yoongi and his musical instruments.”
Ms. Omela waddled back in with a large duffel bag. Taehyung stepped forward to take it from her and she patted his cheek lovingly. You smiled and stepped back into the dressing room to change out of the dress. By the time you exited, Taehyung was already in the room next to yours trying on the clothes she’d brought him.
“I can’t believe you still have this shop open, Ms. Omela,” you grinned. “How do you manage to collect all this amazing clothing?”
“My son, gods bless him, is to thank for my success,” Ms. Omela frowned. “Sometimes I think that he suffers through his terrible corporate job just to keep me happy. Ever since his father died, he’s made every effort to keep the shop open for me. I keep telling him that we should just walk away and let it close, but he refuses to let my utopia die.”
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that,” you said. “You’re lucky to have such a devoted son.”
“I really am,” she sighed sadly. “Thank you for saying so, sweetheart. You know, Taehyung reminds me of him so much. Maybe that’s why I love to see his smiling face.”
You smiled earnestly at her and thought of the joy Taehyung brought into other people’s worlds. There really was no limit to the golden effect he had on them.
“Ms. Omela, I think I’m going to take this dress,” you told her. “Do you have any accessories that would go with it?”
“Of course, dear,” she squealed. “I always have accessories for every occasion.”
She wandered off to gather up some items for you to peruse. You could see her small hands reaching up and pulling items from shelves and baskets throughout the store, and you couldn’t resist smiling at her enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Taehyung emerged from the dressing room in a deep green suit with golden accents. The matching silk shirt underneath made his caramel skin glow in the shop’s soft lighting.
“Wow,” you gasped. “You look amazing, Tae.”
Taehyung struck a pose and flipped his hair out of his eyes dramatically. When he shifted his eyes to meet your own, he smirked and lifted a flirty eyebrow at you. You rolled your eyes in faux annoyance and smiled at him. The man could probably make an old paper bag look good.
“Oh, Taehyungie,” Ms. Omela cried out from somewhere in the shop. “You look divine, my love.”
“Thank you, ajumma,” he called out. “You always know what will look good on me.”
She emerged from behind a large rack of coats with a small basket full of glittering goodies, which she handed to you before stepping forward to get a better look at Taehyung.
“I knew that suit was for you,” she breathed out happily. “The moment it came in, I set it aside, knowing you’d come back in for it. I’m so happy you like it, sweetheart.”
After selecting a beaded clutch and matching jewelry, you and Taehyung bid Ms. Omela goodbye, promising to stop back into the shop before he left town. You noted that Taehyung was also sporting a few more bracelets on his wrist that weren’t there before. The woman spoiled him rotten.
Spoiled brat. Gotta love him though.
March 20th, 5:47pm
“Stop messing with your dress, ttalgi,” Taehyung commanded. “You’re going to ruin the beading if you keep twisting it like that.”
You couldn’t help it. You’d only been in the university ballroom for ten minutes, and you were already a nervous wreck. Everyone was automatically charmed by Taehyung, and you were happy that the attention was on him and not you. You just couldn’t get your mind off of Yoongi and his imminent arrival.
This was a bad idea.
You had strategically placed the five unclaimed items in your clutch along with your wallet, phone, and lipstick. It was an odd assortment, but you had a feeling that you would be leaving without one of the items tonight. The conversation in the room suddenly rose in volume and your heart dropped in the opposite direction.
“There he is,” you whispered unknowingly at Taehyung, who immediately scowled at the entrance.
“Min fucking Yoongi,” he growled. “I should wipe that fucking smile off his face.”
You released a shaky exhale as you took in the overall appearance of your ex-fiancé. He looked glorious in his crisp black suit and silky ash gray hair. He was accompanied by a bodyguard and his manager, and he made his way through the room shaking hands with the administration and meeting other important figures from the university.
“Damn,” you muttered sharply. “Why does he have to look so good?”
“You look better,” Taehyung insisted. “No one can compare to you right now, babe.”
You nodded at his comment, but it lacked conviction. You were entranced by Yoongi’s subtle grace and the enigmatic smile he gave everyone in the room. It wasn’t a big smile, just a slight pull on the corners of his lips. It was his polite smile, his professional smile. Only a few people ever saw his real smile.
I used to be one of those people.
The president of the university stepped up to the podium and properly introduced Yoongi, citing all of the wonderful contributions he’d made to the university over the years. Yoongi stepped forward and spoke a few words to the crowd, but his composure slipped slightly when he locked eyes with you from across the room. Taehyung must have noticed because he chose that moment to slip his arms around your waist and lean his chin on your bare shoulder.
“Yeah, he saw you,” Taehyung gloated, while kissing your shoulder. “How could he not when you look this incredible, babe?”
“Tae,” you hissed quietly. “Stop.”
“No way, babe,” he chuckled darkly. “If you want to talk to him, this is the best way to get his attention.”
The speech ended, the applause resounded, and everyone was encouraged to enjoy the open bar and hor d’oeuvres.
“I’ll be right back,” Taehyung suddenly announced. “Meet me on the balcony in a few minutes. I want to take in that amazing view with my lovely soulmate before we head out for the night.”
With that, Taehyung wandered off, leaving you alone at the table. You grabbed your drink and made your way onto the large balcony overlooking the city. The twinkling lights were indeed breathtaking, and you released an airy sigh as you focused on the horizon point between the city and the night sky.
You leaned on the ornate metal railing and swept your gaze across the dazzling view. From this perspective, you saw beyond the subdued university buildings and the monotonous drone of academia. The landscape dipped and revealed the lush wooded area surrounding the university grounds. Just past the trees, the horizon was speckled with multicolored lights from the rest of the town. Your entire field of vision was consumed by the twinkling lights, resembling an intricate galaxy of stars.
The gentle breeze whisked across the balcony, ruffling your curls away from your shoulders. You closed your eyes and leaned into the calming zephyr, hoping it would sweep away the anxiety building in your gut. You couldn’t understand how the tension on the balcony felt stifling, but it was steadily growing with each passing moment.
“Hey, stranger,” said a deep voice behind you. “Long time, no see.”
Yoongi.
That voice was unmistakable. The gravelly rumble, the delicate timbre, the playful bounce of his words crushing you under a mountain of anxiety. What exactly do you say to someone you once saw as your happily ever after?
He pulled up on the railing next to you and let out a breath full of an emotion you couldn’t quite place. You turned slightly to look at him and immediately regretted that decision. As soon as his eyes caught your own, he unleashed a devastating gummy smile which made your knees weak.
How does he do that every time?
“Can I just say that you look amazing in that dress?” he grinned. “I don’t know where you got it, but it suits you perfectly.”
“Thanks,” you grumbled. “Taehyung picked it out.”
His expression shifted to annoyed at the mention of your soulmate. The two of them never really got along, but they put up with each other for your sake. Now that you and Yoongi weren’t together, there was no hiding the displeasure in either of their eyes.
“Ah, yes,” Yoongi scoffed, scrunching his nose slightly. “The infamous soulmate. I remember. I guess it makes sense that you ended up together. I never could compete with that asshole.”
“Yoongi,” you admonished. “It was never a competition. Tae and I aren’t together like that. We never have been.”
“So you say,” he muttered coolly. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little jealous right now.”
“Of what?” you snapped. “You have nothing to be jealous of, Yoongi.”
He nodded at that, then turned to look out across the landscape. After a few moments of awkward silence, you decided to broach the topic of the evening.
“So,” you started simply. “How have you been, Yoongi? I know you’re doing well career-wise, obviously. But what about everything else?”
He smiled softly and let out a sigh.
“Always concerned about me,” he chuckled. “I always loved that about you. You never hesitated to think about my well-being.”
“Someone had to,” you challenged. “You were always so focused on music, you would forget to take care of yourself. I worried about you. I still do, if I’m being honest.”
“You do?” quipped playfully. “Why is that, pretty girl?”
You buckled slightly under the pet name he used to call you, but you were determined to address the issue at hand before you lost your nerve.
“Because despite everything that happened between us, I still care about you, Yoongi,” you admitted freely. “I will always care about you, even if you don’t feel the same way.”
His grin evaporated at that, and he furrowed his brows slightly. With a huff, he reached over and put his hand on your waist to pull you closer. Your breath caught in your throat at the proximity, and you released a small gasp as he leaned forward to rub his nose against yours.
“It was never about that,” Yoongi murmured quietly. “I always cared about you. I still do. I just couldn’t give you what you wanted, what you deserved.”
You trembled slightly as his fingertips wandered up and down your sides tracing over the curve of your hip and then up to the swell of your breast. Your resolve was weakening under his expert touch, and why wouldn’t it? The man knew every inch of your body and knew exactly what buttons to push to turn you into a whimpering mess.
“Yoongi,” you whined softly. “Please don’t do this to me.”
“Do what?” he teased lightly. “I’m not doing anything to you...yet.”
You reached up and stopped his hand from moving any further. You couldn’t allow Yoongi to ruin you yet again with his touches. You’d come too far and there was no way you were regressing back into the mess you used to be.
That’s over for me now. I’ve moved on.
“I can’t let you do this to me again, Yoongi,” you explained firmly. “The last time I did, it almost broke me completely. I won’t put myself through that hell again.”
His face softened and he nodded in understanding. He reached up to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear and noted the glossiness of your eyes. He winced slightly and you saw him gulp in response.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I really am. I wish I could be the man you want me to be. I just can’t. Not when I’ve come this far.”
“I know,” you replied softly, reaching out to hold onto one of his belt loops. “I’m really proud of you, you know? You’ve done some amazing things with your music.”
“Thank you,” he smiled genuinely. “That means a lot coming from you.”
You hesitated, but felt like you needed to say one more thing before you lost your nerve.
“He’d be proud too, y’know,” you ventured. “If he was still here, he’d be over the moon for your music.”
Yoongi stiffened against you and let out a huff of warm air. He knew what you were talking about, but you couldn’t tell whether he was comfortable talking about it. He pulled away slightly and your heart broke when you saw his glistening eyes.
Oh no. I’ve gone too far.
While you were both still in college and still figuring out what your futures would be, Yoongi’s best friend was involved in a horrible car accident which left him partially paralyzed from the neck down. They’d both been music performance/production majors: Yoongi, the pianist and his best friend Dae, the percussionist. After the accident, Dae fell into a deep depression knowing he’d never be able to play an instrument properly again. He tried to regain his strength through physical therapy, but in the end, his desire to make music just died along with his desire to live. After a year of despair, frustration, and overwhelming anger, Yoongi found Dae in bed, overdosed on his own sleeping pills.
Needless to say, the whole thing wrecked Yoongi. You stayed by his side, trying to ease the pain of his loss, but it didn’t do any good. Yoongi withdrew into his work, determined to succeed at music, no matter the cost.
You suddenly remembered what Yoongi was always telling you when you begged him to take a break.
I can’t take a break right now, pretty girl. I don’t have a second to waste. I need to do this before I can’t anymore.
Yoongi cleared his throat and shook off the discomfort at the mention of Dae. You thought Yoongi might be retreating again, which you couldn’t blame him for. Dae would always be a tender point of discussion, and you felt bad for even bringing him up. You started to pull away, but he reached forward and grabbed your hand, entwining his fingers with your own. He pulled your hand closer to his lips and placed a gentle kiss against it.
“You’re right,” he sighed heavily. “Dae would probably be talking shit about the stuff I’m writing now, but he’d still like it. He was a bastard sometimes, but a supportive bastard nonetheless.”
You both chuckled at that, and then you settled into another moment of silence. Yoongi was one to break the silence this time.
“I’m sorry,” he pouted. “I was fucking horrible to you after Dae passed. You didn’t deserve that, especially from me. I couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was slipping away from me. There was just this big black shadow following me around and it didn’t matter where I went or who I was with, I couldn’t get rid of it.”
“It’s ok, Yoongi,” you soothed. “You were in a lot of pain. I just wanted to be there for you.”
“I know,” he admitted sheepishly. “But it was definitely not ok. You were so patient and loving and I treated you like shit. I neglected the one person who was trying to make me happy in the midst of all that pain and angst. We just kept going back and forth and I figured it was better to stop everything before I ruined your life completely. It was a shitty thing to do, and I should’ve been a better person for you.”
“You’re better now,” you reminded him. “Are you happy with your life, Yoongi?”
He looked you in the eye and gave you a lopsided smile. You knew that smile. It was the smile he gave people when he wanted them to believe that he was fine when he really wasn’t. You weren’t falling for it, and he knew it. He rolled his eyes at you, knowing that you were calling his bluff.
“I’m not unhappy,” he admitted. “I love my job, and I love the freedom that comes along with it. It does get a little lonely sometimes, but I deal. The hardest part is dealing with writer’s block. I’m actually in the middle of a block right now.”
“You? Blocked?” you teased. “The unstoppable writing machine is blocked? How is that possible?”
“Don’t tease me,” he whined cutely. “It’s a serious condition. I have a deadline coming up and I’m just stuck. Nothing sounds right and my mind just goes blank when I try to put beats together. It’s so frustrating.”
“I know,” you agreed. “Remember what Dae would do when you got stuck? He’d start banging on everything in the studio trying to inspire you. A random smack of a chair or the reverb off of the cabinets would catch your attention and then you were off and running like a madman.”
You both cracked up at the memory. Yoongi flashed another gummy smile at you and you felt blessed to be in its presence.
“I remember,” he chortled. “There was even that stupid purple kazoo he brought in once. He swore that even though he didn’t play a wind instrument, he could still outplay everyone in the building.”
You froze as he guffawed at the ridiculousness.

Yoongi caught on to your sudden stiff posture and the panicked look in your eyes.
“Hey, what’s wrong, pretty girl?” he asked, eyes full of concern. “Was it something I said?”
You flashed him a look and tried to swallow, but your throat was inexplicably dry. You gulped down the rest of your drink and set the glass aside on a side table on the patio.
“Stay here,” you pleaded. “I have to show you something, but it’s in my purse. I’ll be right back.”
“Ok, I’ll wait right here,” he agreed, although still concerned about your shift in demeanor. “Are you sure you’re ok?”
“Yes, I promise,” you replied shakily. “Just wait, give me a minute.”
You rushed back inside and grabbed your clutch. Taehyung was talking up your friend Gina in the corner, so you dashed back to the balcony without a second thought. Once you reached Yoongi, you thought it prudent to explain yourself.
“So, I have absolutely no way of explaining this, so please don’t freak out,” you prompted. “I found this in a box in my apartment, and I didn’t know it belonged to you until just now.”
You opened your purse and pulled out the purple kazoo. Yoongi’s eyes lit up with recognition and his jaw dropped.
“What the,” he sputtered. “Why do you have Dae’s kazoo? Do you have any idea how long I’ve been looking for that?!”
“I don’t know,” you admitted. “Like I said, I have absolutely no idea where it came from or how it came to be in my possession, but here it is.”
You handed him the kazoo and he took it gingerly from your fingers and just held it, his face full of wonder and disbelief. His eyes watered as he looked at it, and you tried to soothe him by rubbing his arms.
“This is the last thing Dae ever gave me,” Yoongi explained. “He’d left it in my studio and I took it to his apartment the night before he...the night before he-”
The words caught in his throat and he took a deep breath to combat the onslaught of tears pushing at the back of his eyes. You pulled him into a gentle hug, hoping to assuage his grief, if even a little.
“We talked for hours that night,” Yoongi croaked into your shoulder. “He even played on this stupid thing for me. Before I left, he handed it over and said I should record some kazoo for my next track. He said it would be the next big thing in hip hop.”
You continued to rub soothing circles on his back, but Yoongi just kept trembling in your arms. If you’d known how emotional this whole thing was going to be, you would’ve waited until you weren’t around crowds of people to unveil this sensitive information. Yoongi took a deep shaking breath and shuddered against you. He clutched at your back briefly and then slowly pulled away from your grasp. He pulled the silver pocket square out of his lapel and wiped the tears from his face.
“I’m sorry, Yoongi,” you murmured softly. “I didn’t mean to upset you. I just realized what it was when you mentioned it, and I thought you would want it.”
“I do,” he sniffled. “I don’t know why you ended up with it, but I’m glad you were able to bring it back to me. Thank you, pretty girl.”
“Don’t mention it,” you smiled. “I’m happy to help.”
“I just wish I had something to give you in return,” he sighed. “But I don’t have any-”
Yoongi suddenly paused and cocked his head sideways at you with a perplexed look on his face. He pulled up his sleeve and undid the cuff links holding his shirt together. He unveiled a bracelet of red silk thread woven around a silver eternity symbol. He pulled the adjustable strings to loosen it and then slid it off his wrist.
“I found this in my accessories collection the other day and I’ve been compelled to wear it every day,” he told you. “I don’t know where it came from, but every time I look at it, I’ve thought about you. It’s the strangest thing.”
He pulled your wrist up and adjusted the strings so the bracelet fit snugly against your wrist. He grinned at the sight and pulled your wrist to his lips.
“It suits you,” he murmured against your wrist. “It’s like it was made for you, pretty girl.”
Your cheeks were dusted pink at his words, but you returned his smile anyway. His eyes traced over your face as though searching for the answer to a question he had yet to ask.
“I can never apologize enough for what happened between us,” he proclaimed. “But just know that there is not one day that goes by where I don’t think about you. I know I made my music career a priority, but that was only because I was afraid of losing it like Dae. If the tables had been turned and I was the one who had ended up in his position, I don’t know if I would’ve survived either. Music is everything to me, and the thought of losing that terrifies me, even now.”
“I understand,” you sighed out sadly. “I just wish that losing me scared you just as much. Our relationship suffered because of that fear. I was ready to spend the rest of my life with you, Yoongi. It just sucks that you didn’t want the same thing with me.”
His hand twitched against yours and he seemed to hesitate for some reason. He suddenly released a huff of breath and licked his lips.
“Fuck it,” he whispered.
Yoongi leaned forward and captured your lips with his own. The Universe stood still for a moment and you melted against his chest. The kiss wasn’t harsh, but just firm enough to give you butterflies and make your knees weak. You leaned into the kiss and pushed back just enough to elicit a needy hum from Yoongi.
You parted your lips and you felt Yoongi’s tongue sprint forward into your mouth, taking complete control of the kiss. The heat levels increased between you, and your mind flailed uselessly against the magnetic pull of Min Yoongi. Awash in a torrent of longing and nostalgia, the two of you sunk into an all too familiar passionate embrace. He pulled away from your lips, too soon, and leaned his forehead against your own.
“Music may be my first love,” he admitted openly while sinking his fingers into your hair possessively. “But I swear you will always be my last. No one will ever compare to you, pretty girl. Many have tried, but none of them even come close to you. If I couldn’t make a relationship work with you, then there is absolutely no hope for anyone else. I would rather go the rest of my life loving you from afar than trying to fake it with someone else.”
“Yoongi,” you gasped. “Please don’t say that. That sounds so lonely. I don’t want to think about you being all alone. It hurts my heart to hear that.”
“I’m not alone, pretty girl,” he assured you. “I have my music, and let’s be honest. With my busy schedule, a relationship isn’t going to be a real possibility for a very long time. I have no intention of slowing down any time soon. I’ll worry about that when the time comes. Until then, I have my memories of you to keep me smiling every day.”
He reached down and pulled your wrist up to run his fingers across the infinity bracelet. You watched as he traced out the never ending loop over and over again.
“That’s what this is, pretty girl,” Yoongi murmured softly. “Let this be a reminder that no matter what, my love for you is infinite. The memories of what we shared will always be a comfort to me, even when darkness falls.”
“How can that be enough?” you insisted. “They’re just memories, Yoongi.”
“Hey,” he said while reaching up to hold your face between his glorious hands. “Just knowing that you don’t hate me and that you still care about me is more than enough for now. I promise that if I ever need more than that, I will be giving you a call. Not as an ex, but as a friend. Before anything else, we were friends. I’d like that to still be true, if you’re willing.”
“Of course,” you breathed out in relief. “I would love that.”
You wrapped your arms around Yoongi’s neck and he returned your tender embrace. You both sighed out happily, and then you heard approaching footsteps menacing across the balcony.
“Well, well, well,” Taehyung drawled. “If it isn’t Min fucking Yoongi, my old nemesis.”
“Kim Elizabeth Taehyung,” Yoongi gloated cheekily as he turned to face him. “Still with a flair for the dramatic, I see.”
“Hey,” Taehyung shot back angrily as he pointed a long finger at you. “Only she gets to call me by that name. That is a soulmate trademarked nickname.”
“Ah yes, how could I forget?” Yoongi teased. “My pretty girl and her annoying soulmate, always joined at the hip, even from far, far away.”
“She isn’t your pretty girl anymore,” Taehyung reminded him. “You lost those privileges a long time ago, or don’t you remember breaking that pretty girl’s heart into a thousand pieces?”
Yoongi winced at that, but you rubbed his arm reassuringly. You glared at Taehyung who only smirked back at you triumphantly. He noticed your sudden tenderness toward Yoongi and his smirk morphed into a confused pout.
“That’s enough, Tae,” you announced. “Yoongi is not my enemy, nor is he yours. Back off.”
Taehyung recoiled slightly and ruffled his hair, trying to shake the confusion out of his curling tendrils. He shifted his weight to his other leg and looked Yoongi up and down, as if to assess any changes or hidden transformations he’d missed earlier. With narrowed eyes and a brief lift of his chin, Taehyung glanced back to your softened gaze.
“We don’t hate him anymore?” Taehyung questioned carefully. “Are you sure?”
You leaned over to kiss Yoongi on the cheek, drawing a flash of red across his cheeks and ears. You grinned at his embarrassment and shook your head at Taehyung as his jaw literally dropped in astonishment.
“No, we don’t hate him anymore, Tae,” you continued. “We’re good.”
“Oh, thank the gods,” Taehyung breathed. “Finally.”
Much to your surprise, Taehyung stepped forward and took Yoongi’s hand in his own. Taehyung’s boxy grin made an appearance as he shook Yoongi’s hand and started talking a mile a minute. Yoongi went into mini panic mode with Taehyung’s abrupt advance into his personal space and he shot you a questioning look. You just shrugged.
“Can I just say that your last album was fucking incredible?” Taehyung blabbed. “I mean, your beats are fire, man, and don’t even get me started on those lyrics you write.”
“U-umm, thanks, man,” Yoongi stuttered. “I worked really hard on them.”
“We totally need to hang out sometime and just shoot the shit, y’know?” Taehyung persisted. “I would love to sit down and just watch you work. I bet it’s amazing.”
A deep voice broke up the love fest erupting all over Yoongi.
“Mr. Min,” his bodyguard announced unceremoniously. “It’s time to go. We have that flight in the morning, sir.”
“Yeah, ok, I’m going,” Yoongi assured him. “Just give me a second.”
You and Taehyung both looked at Yoongi and giggled at the awkward tension that dispersed now that the guard had intruded on Taehyung's moment of fawning over your ex.
“I gotta go,” Yoongi shrugged, while handing both you and Taehyung his business card. “But let’s catch up when I get back. I have to do a small promo tour over the next few weeks, but I’d love to get dinner with you guys when I get back.”
“Oh, I can’t,” Taehyung pouted. “I don’t actually live here right now. But hey, if you ever need a new marketing guy, let me know. I would quit my job in a second to work with you.”
“I’ll keep that in mind, Kim,” Yoongi chuckled, shaking Taehyung’s hand again. “Do me a favor and take care of this pretty girl for me. I know she’ll be in good hands if she’s with you.”
“Of course,” Taehyung breathed out. “It’s my mission in life to keep her safe and happy.”
“Then she’s lucky to have you,” Yoongi said with a grin. “Very lucky, indeed.”
He turned to face you and you couldn’t resist the puppy dog look on his face. You leaned over and offered him one last kiss on his pouty lips.
“I’ll be fine,” you told him sweetly. “We’re fine. Go on and break through that mental block of yours. I’m sure you’ll figure it out before you know it.”
He pulled the kazoo out of his pocket and unleashed yet another gummy smile.
“Now that I have this,” he mused. “I’m sure something will come to me. Thank you. I mean it.”
After giving you one last gummy smile, he turned away and walked over to his bodyguard, leaving both you and Taehyung on the balcony. Taehyung put his arm around you and leaned his head on yours, deep in thought.
“Everything went well, I’m assuming,” Taehyung casually commented. “You both seem to be in a good place now, better than you were before at least.”
“Yeah,” you agreed. “Better than you anyway. What was with that full blown fanboy you busted out on him? Stan much, Tae-bear?”
“Come on, ttalgi,” he retorted. “The man is a musical genius. You cannot deny the man’s talent. I would be remiss not to recognize and respect the full power of Min fucking Yoongi.”
“Are you ever going to stop calling him that?” you giggled.
“Never,” he proclaimed. “That will always and forever be his name. Now, I say we take this party elsewhere. You look too damn good in that dress to waste away in your apartment.”
“Fine,” you sighed. “What did you have in mind?”
“Bar?” he suggested. “With karaoke? I’m buying.”
“Who could say no to that?” you gushed. “Lead the way, Elizabeth.”
You linked your arm in Taehyung’s and made your way out of the ballroom, your steps a little lighter than they were before.

The Curious Anecdote of Joseph Spry and the Painted Cabinet
Mr Joseph Spry’s trouble began with an empty corner in an otherwise pleasantly cluttered room, and while it was at last remedied, interceding events rendered the whole affair so remarkable that he, unable to resolve the sequence to his own satisfaction, proceeded to inflict it upon the ears of anyone near enough to listen, that sharper minds than his own might tug a thread of truth from its fantastical tangle. Perhaps a sympathetic pair of eyes may yet do that which remains undone.
Spry was a button carver by trade, who spent many hours hunched over a cramped work-bench awling and whittling pretty wooden fasteners for the frugal aesthetes of the world, and as such was a dear admirer of ornamentation; There was nothing that pleased him so much as a painted lintel, illuminated book-binding, or (indeed this should be no surprise) a button without function. It was this sense of inborn taste which rendered bare walls, floors, and windows a great distress to him, and the northeastern corner of his Spitalfields workshop proved especially vexing. It was not merely bare and absent of dressing, but to his mind aggressive in its emptiness, a space not of nothing but consuming, as though were he to stand in it, the corner might leech all he though admirable in himself, those impulses whose sum rendered his a life worth living, and all sense of character, until he lost colour and substance altogether and crumbled there into an unassuming heap of dust.
But he tried not to consider this too often.
Still, the notion crept and writhed in the dimmer corners of his mind and on darker nights, and he determined the simplest course of alleviation for his current distress was to fill the corner with something winsome, though he might allow its having some other use besides beauty. After he had earned an especially high sum in carving forty-eight identical rosette buttons for a stout old gentleman of a literary persuasion, Spry sought out a furniture-seller to spend his fortune. There he found a cabinet, large and varnished to the deep and pleasant amber of Oloroso sherry, its three doors painted with twining golden vines that appeared to shift as though stirred by a gentle wind, and though he feared this would cost him dearly—perhaps more than he had earned in his recent commission—Spry was determined to purchase this cabinet. So affected was he by its exquisite manufacture that, when his breathless entreaty as to its cost received a gruff response of a mere six shillings in reply, Spry did not to much voice his concerns as prematurely employ a death-rattle.
“Six shillings? Sir, is there some defect?”
“None at all,” the shopkeeper assured him, “save that it’s big and more trouble to keep about than it’s worth. I’d been of a mind to chop it to kindling if no-one asked after it soon.”
The idea of an axe coming anywhere near the cabinet’s shining walls struck Spry with a cold and precise terror; his remaining discourse with the furniture seller was brief, and the cabinet was to follow him home in the care of one or two of the furniture seller’s large and identically stone-faced apprentices. Behind its right door the cabinet was lined with small drawers, and these Spry used to store paints, brushes, and delicate tools of his trade; behind the left were a number of shelves upon which he laid some personal effects—his cravats, linen cloths, washing-powders, and so forth—and thrilled to have his home so well and handsomely ordered. The middle compartment of the cabinet he seldom opened, for it was a yawning, dark space, and Spry determined from its condition that whatever had previously installed itself in his corner had now resettled inside the middle cabinet, where he might at least keep it behind a door. Thus the cabinet took its place in the once-dreadful corner of his workshop, and for a time Spry was well pleased.
After some weeks, however, items which he had kept in the drawers or on the shelves vanished, and in their place appeared object of whose provenance he had no understanding of whatever. His embroidered muslin shirts transformed into plain linen with extraordinarily long arms; his coloured cravats became black socks; in the drawers all his fine brushes and pigments disappeared altogether, replaced by a pistol, a tin of pastilles, and a miniature portrait of a pretty young woman in a blue gown. While he had no doubt these were dear and useful to some body, Spry rued their presence in his home, for how was he to make his livelihood with these trifles? He ruminated on this trouble and paced a circle through the sawdust of his workshop, until the third door—the middle door, which he had so dutifully kept shut and undisturbed—burst open, producing the upper half of a long-armed gentleman. The man had a hard and beautiful countenance, which brought unbid to Spry’s mind the realisation that even in this age of great learned men casting the golden light of science into the dark labyrinth of superstition, there were unknowable things in the world.
Spry stared for a long while at the stranger, who duly stared back. His dress was military, but not of any regiment Spry recognized, and his fears were quite realised when the gentleman said several words which Spry did not directly know, but which by their timbre and velocity he believed he understood; this gentleman (this French gentleman, it must be said) was bewildered in equal if not greater measure by his present circumstances as Spry was, and without repeating any approximation of the Frenchman’s remark, as the phrase has no place in decent literature, he was not entirely pleased about them either.
“I cannot blame him for his distress,” Spry thought, “but neither can I allow gentlemen from foreign parts to come into my rooms unannounced and just as they please!” With this resolution in his mind he strode the two or three paces’ distance between himself and his cabinet, hoisted the Frenchman by the collar of his coat, shoved him bodily back into the cabinet from whence he came, and shut the door, with the added precaution of a chair to hold it closed. At once he hoped that to be the end of the matter and strongly believed it could not be, and it was the latter inclination which proved true; in such time as a gentleman might, once thrown back and fallen, stand upright again, there were three sharp knocks from within the cabinet. Spry leaned nearer the door.
“I have no interest in letting you back in, sir, your presence is a great inconvenience to me. You are both an enemy of my country and an uninvited guest, and I will have neither.”
“Vous avez mes affaires! Mon pistolet, mes chemises… Ma petite Jeanne!”
“Your affairs are none of my concern! Find another way into England, if you are so intent upon it.”
At the mention of venerable England there was such a prolonged silence that Spry was certain the Frenchman had gone away, and his beating heart began to slow again, though he still stood petrified, pushing the chair against the cabinet door. Once more there was a knocking.
“I have told you already, you cannot come in!”
“J'ai des boutons, des pinceaux, des autres choses... Avez-vous perdu des boutons?”
Spry opened the door a crack and peered through the gap into the darkness of the middle cabinet, and was shocked to see it was not dark at all. Instead it was as though a window led from his little room in Spitalfields to another, splendid place, a library or gentleman’s study from what he saw, as the wall behind the Frenchman seemed entirely constructed of handsome bookshelves lined with marvellous tomes bound in crimson leather. Near the periphery of his view was a tall window sashed in blue with golden trimmings, and before the window sat two armchairs, positioned that one might read a book or watch the scenery at one’s leisure. At once he understood the urge to crawl from one side of the cabinet to the other, and it took a great deal of his will not to throw the cabinet open and do so. The Frenchman, stood with expectant eyes in the center of the scene, would have prevented him had he tried. In his hands was a basket, strangely plain and rough amid the room’s splendour, in which he had placed Spry’s possessions; Spry thought he must have taken it from the kitchens of such a fine house, and took offense that the Frenchman did not think his belongings worthy of a carved casket or box, of which he was certain the gentleman had many. Spry stepped back from the cabinet with a scowl and a sour heart, and determined to return the Frenchman’s things to him in at least as insensitive a fashion. He at last decided to bundle everything in one of the man’s own shirts, and with this industry completed moved the chair out of his way entirely and opened the cabinet.
The Frenchman was nowhere to be seen, though the basket sat in plain view. Was this some trick? Spry untied his bundle of the stranger’s possessions and removed the pistol, an instrument which he had never before had, and hoped never again to have, occasion to use.
“Hello? Monsieur, are you there?” No answer came. From the room beyond Spry could hear the sea, and smelled orange blossoms faintly on the wind. He was no larger than the Frenchman, of that he was certain, and if that gentleman had managed to crawl from his end to Spry’s it would be the simplest thing in the world to travel the opposite way and set foot in the wonderful library, if he wished to. Yet he did not; without any reason he could readily explain, he only set down the pistol and the bundled shirt, took the basket of his own things, and retreated, closing the door behind him. It closed with a strange finality, the click of the hasp heavier than it had been before.
After he had shut the door, he swiftly threw it open again, and found the cabinet empty, not in a vast and dark fashion as it had been, but only mundanely empty, and though he pressed every inch of the back panel it would not yield, nor did he find any means to open some secret door which he had not accounted for previously. Spry tutted to himself and thought, for all his not inconsiderable virtues, he had understood, and would persist in understanding, nothing. He set about counting his paintbrushes.

On Tokyo
Everything here seems to function as it was meant to. Trains, traffic, pedestrians. Despite 13 million people inhabiting metropolitan Tokyo, I witness no jay walking, no traffic jams. In five days, I literally hear someone honk their horn once. Everywhere I go people seem patient, waiting in single files lines, for restaurants, for elevators, for buses and trains. When the train arrives, notoriously on time, the train car aligns perfectly with markings on the ground, the commuters quietly stand in two single file lines on the side of the car doors until everyone exiting has deboarded, then enter themselves, quickly, orderly. On the escalators, everyone stands to the left, so those walking more quickly have free passage on the right. On the streets, everyone walks to the left, keeping to their own lane, staying off the raised yellow tile navigation system of lines and dots for the blind, a kind of braille for the feet. The whole of Tokyo seems like a well-oiled machine, each denizen aware they are a cog in a larger system, willing to play their part.
I count five pieces of trash on the ground in five days of walking my way through Tokyo. Despite walls of boarded panels covering up construction, not a single one is grimied with the familiar markings of a graffiti tag. I see no homeless people, except for a small tent city under the train tracks in Shinjuku. Each denizen has a large cardboard box, taped into perfect orderly rectangles and squares of varying sizes with thick blue tape. Pairs of shoes sit neatly outside, even the homeless feeling enough dignity not to sully their makeshift home with dirty shoes.
Every toilet has a bidet. Most have heated seats. Some of them have “privacy” buttons where the sounds of chirping birds or crashing waves will play loudly enough to hide whatever squeeches and pffts want to work their way out of your body. Even in train stations the toilet paper is so often folded into neat triangles, I wonder if it’s an anonymous origami gesture from whoever peed there before. Every seat is clean and dry, the floor of every stall without a single stray piece of ply.
I never see a single Japanese person in yoga pants or casual “comfy” clothes. Everyone looks like they have a stylist. Perfectly manicured and coifed, fashionable, in sync with the latest trends, attention paid to every inch of their look from the tips of their nails to the lace lining on their ankle socks. I feel self-conscious of my messy wave of curls, the stray frizzy hairs out of place, the bra strap occasionally slipping into view. The masses of passerbys – both men and women – create a dizzying scape of haute chic, a magazine spread come to life, each individual worthy of their own page. Some are more alternative, gothic punk, “kawaii” cute, Anime cosplay, Lolita-esque life-sized dolls with contacts to make their irises the size of a cartoon. But everyone – everyone – looks to have thought carefully about their look for the day.
I am astounded by the attention to detail. In the fashion, the interior design, the service, the food. Every plate, every chopstick, every corner of every room, every morsel of every meal, the size of the ice cube, the shape of the cup, the type of flower in the vase. It all seems chosen, intentional. Remarkable, more for what is not there than what is – the finesse is in the editing, the negative space. Everything is an elegant composition. An homage to efficiency. Even the signage in the public bathrooms, perfectly clear instructions in any language, to sit, not squat, to put toilet paper in the toilet and everything else in the trash. The organization of the train station, each car of the subway, each exit of the station, with its own number, so you know where to stand, where to walk, to exit closest to your destination. Someone has thought about this in advance, someone cared deeply about my experience of the bathroom, my experience of the train. In Shinto, the Japanese religion, everything has its own spirit – the trees, the rocks, the leaves – every object meriting respect. I can feel the dignity with which objects are treated here, the care with which they are imbued. It makes me want to slow down and pay more attention to the details in my life, to have fewer, nicer objects, worthy of my care.
We, too, are treated with the same dignity and care. Everywhere we go we are greeted with the utmost courtesy and respect. Everyone wants to please us, to make us feel honored. We are thanked and bowed to so many times entering and exiting an establishment, I feel awkward and embarrassed by the attention. They bow and I bow back and they bow again and I bow again, unsure when we can politely stop. Almost everyone is incredibly kind, helpful. But almost no one is friendly. There is so much respect I feel trapped behind a wall, simultaneously welcomed in and completely shut out.
I get frustrated by the persistent pleasing. When I ask our travel guide for advice on what to do for the day, she doesn’t give me a straight answer. She is shy, uncomfortable giving her opinion, searching for clues of what she thinks I want her to say.
I get exhausted by the intensity of Tokyo. The nonstop onslaught of people, places. The streets show no letting up, no reprieve. Buildings are stacked 9 levels high with businesses, neon signs in foreign symbols piling on top of each other, stretching into the sky. Shops and restaurants upon shops and restaurants, packed with people, ten story fashion malls seemingly on every block, with sprawling basement food halls hawking perfectly curated bento boxes, wildly expensive single pieces of fruit, beautiful pastries, gleaming sushi, slices of marbled wagyu, yakatori skewers, tonkatsu, onigiri, karaage, donburi, mochi, and on and on. More shops and restaurants fill the train stations, floors of underground malls beneath the tracks. Vending machines line every spare inch of street side real estate, a brightly lit convenient store on every corner, all busy inside. The constancy of the commercialism is crushing. I can barely breath.
Until we step inside and off the streets. The whirring of the city in unceasing motion quiets as the door shuts, giving way to an oasis of calm. Inside the restaurant, or teahouse, or bar, with just six seats, maybe twelve, it is jarringly serene. Like the clothes they wear and the food they serve, the design has been flawlessly fashioned. A single flower arranged inside a bud vase to arch perfectly over the bar. A shelf with perfectly arranged sets of cups, liquor bottles placed side by side, an exacting two inches apart. A set of rattan baskets, one arranged neatly by my seat as a receptacle for my purse. I am greeted kindly, in sync, by all of the staff. Then it is quiet, no music, perhaps a few hushed voices, speaking in low conversation. Time stands still inside. Tokyo, outside of this one room, ceases to exist. Here is serenity. I could stay for hours, barely remembering there is anywhere else.
For a while I’m grateful for the respite. To know that whenever I need, there is a nearby establishment I can escape into for a moment of peace. But then even the quiet begins to suffocate. If outside is chaotic order of overwhelming magnitude, inside is delicately crafted, oppressive calm. Though seemingly opposites, they are but versions of the same strive for perfection, two different expressions of the same exquisite restraint, varying functions of the same set of rigid rules. I want to scream. I want to throw my beautiful plate of pea tofu with sea urchin foam and a single curled carrot strip at the walls. I want to claw my way out of the suffocating precision and tear my hair and jump up and down headbanging to Rage Against the Machine. I suddenly think I have insight into the high rates of suicide, the infamous lack of sexual desire, the fascination with violent manga and tentacle rape porn. I think I get the escape into virtual worlds, the otaku obsessionism, the gritty shibari/BDSM scene. After only a few days I need an outlet for my individuality, a place to express my energy, a way to kindle my life force before it quakes beneath the conformity.
In the middle of all this, I find myself eating a 14-course meal at a restaurant called Inua that won best new restaurant of the year. Each dish is spectacular, creative, colorful, beautiful, an homage to the nature from which its components came. One dish – a sort of savory sweet fruit rollup created from local plums, laid like an artwork on a piece of honeycomb inside a wooden frame, baked with edible flowers and a variety of herbs – somehow tastes simultaneously new and familiar, exotic and comforting. It is so beautifully plated, so magical and delightful and whimsical in concept, so confounding in its flavors, it awakens all my senses and reminds me how exciting it can be to exist in a human body that is able to see and smell and hear and touch and – above all, in this moment – to taste. To taste! I am so humbled by the dish and the experience the chef created for me in this bite of food I am moved to tears.
I find myself at TeamLab: Borderless, an immersive digital art museum filled with wide halls and hidden rooms of moving images. Ceiling to floor digital sunflowers, a parade of traditionally-drawn 6 foot bunnies I can follow across the walls of the entire exhibit, a room filled with lanterns that grow brighter or dimmer based on the proximity of its viewers, fields of digitally lit lily pads, floral tigers and elephants stampeding by, screens of digitally dripping water that change their flow pattern when I interrupt them with my hand. It is a maze of art work that responds to me, knows that I am there, is changed by my presence, allows me to become part of it. I watch a four-minute experience known as the Cave Universe, a dance of birds flying in such dizzying immersive beauty that I feel like I’m doing somersaults, turned inside out, unsure which direction is up. I lose my balance, assure myself I haven’t done any drugs. It is so thrilling, a rollercoaster ride standing still, I watch it at least four more times.
I find myself in the middle of Tokyo’s busy streets, six inches off the ground in a red and yellow go cart, wearing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle onesie. It is the most fun way I’ve ever explored a new city, wind in my face, foot on the gas pedal; there is an immediacy to the experience I immediately love. Plus, we are clearly bringing joy to hundreds of pedestrians as we whiz by. They are waving, taking pictures. I feel adored. Like I am famous. I am delighted seeing their demeanors change, serious grimaces and blank stares breaking out into huge smiles, excited eyes, when they see us pass. Hordes of school girls make heart shapes on their heads for us to mimic back, business men in taxis roll down their windows to say konichiwa. It is the first time I feel a bridge to the Japanese people that isn’t completely shrouded in politeness and etiquette.
Thankfully it isn’t the last. We bond with our bartender in the tiny ten seat bar, one of 200 in the Golden Gai. He speaks almost no English, but he pours good Japanese Whiskey, and he smiles and makes charade-style jokes like we’re old friends. The chef at our Michelin starred sushi restaurant stands in front of us and makes us nigiri piece by piece, telling us about a day in his life, waking up at 4am to go to the fish market, living on three hours of sleep per night, smiling and laughing, eating up our experience of his meal like we eat up his fish, clearly devoting his life to the thing he loves. The owner and waitress at the neighborhood soba shop teach us how to slurp soba and ask our help translating a few lines on their menu, giggling at the fact “beefsteak plant” actually means “shiso leaf.” But so far these experiences have been the exception rather than the rule.
The language barrier certainly makes things challenging; not many people speak English well. But it feels like it’s more than that. I have a sneaking suspicion that, like most everything else here, the distance is intentional. We are here, as tourists, as their revered and honored guests, and they our venerable hosts. It is not lip service – service is an art form here, completely genuine, a great source of pride. The formalities, they are the tools of the trade, a signal of how seriously they take their hosting, how important the exchange. And yet, I can’t help feeling the politeness is also obscuring something more. What? Whatever the “real” Tokyo might be? I am not sure. All I feel is the wall. This sense there is something else I can’t yet see, some way I can’t yet connect. It leaves me feeling lonely. Isolated. Hungry for meaningful interaction. Yearning for depth. I am craving authenticity. Personality. Someone more themselves than they are pleasing. Someone who will tell me like it really is. I can’t help but wonder what this city would be like if I had a way in, someone who could show me behind the courtesies…because there must be something behind the courtesies...right?
Perhaps the next time I am here, for I feel fairly certain this won’t be the last. Until then, we board a train for the countryside, leaving Tokyo behind….

Decorating tips for broke witches
I received an anon the other day asking me if I had any tips for bedroom decorations for broke witches. These are inexpensive things that I look for to decorate with in pretty much any room of my house, but definitely my bedroom!
Baskets
I love buying baskets. They have a warm earthy look to them that makes any room feel more cozy and homey. I rarely (if ever) have purchased a basket full price at a store. The thrift stores in my area always seem to have them and every time I’ve gone to a yard sale I’ve seen them. I don’t think I have ever paid more than $2. Usually they run under a $1.
Here are a few ways that I use them:
electrical cords: I have a basket designated for my iphone and ipad chargers, my amazon kindle charger, headphones. pretty much anything that involved electrical cords so that I know where to find them when I need them
stacking: personally I like the stacked look. it brings height (if that’s what you are looking for) and fills a space while still being aesthetically pleasing
use them!: also they’re useful?! I grabbed one of mine sitting on a shelf the other day and went out to my front porch to collect blooms from my hanging flowers
Candlestick holders
There’s something about a candelabra or single candlestick holder that can really raise a witchy atmosphere. I recently saw a cute taper candle holder at Yankee Candle Co and it was $40 and I was just omg NO. The ones shown above are gorgeous and suit my needs just fine. All were purchased at yard sales. I often don’t even have candles in them, but just sitting on a book shelf or side table with a few other items creates such a good vibe. And these are easily attainable for broke witches! Check thrift stores, yard sales, or even the dollar store. Watch for sales at craft stores if you see one you really want, most stores have a 40%-60% off coupon weekly that you could use to get them for less.
The thing about candelabras is that they really suit any decorating style because they come in all different tones of metal or glass or ceramic. So just keep your eyes peeled for ones that suit your style!
Candles and Books
These have always been great things to use for decoration. Go to thrift stores and if you happen upon a yard sale look for these two things. I can tell you right now, books are one of the hardest things to sell at a yard sale so they are usually very cheap. Same with used candles. Say they burnt a candle once for 20 mins and then it sat on their mantle for two years, they just want to get rid of it now. I recently got six slightly used various sized pillar candles for a quarter each!! Screw spending upwards of $6.99 at the store!
For books, you can certainly look for old style ones with the hardcover that is cloth, they are usually a solid color and look really nice stacked on a table with a candelabra beside them. You might pay a bit more for them, but they should still be rather cheap. But if you can’t find that here are some things I would look for with modern books:
ideally books on the occult or witchcraft
nature or animal reference books
front cover/spine color: if you can envision the color scheme you want in your room, try to find 5-6 books where if you were to stack them, the spine colors would work well together
Sticks
This is a found item that is great for decorating. I have a large clear vase with branches sitting in it. I used wine corks and pine cones to fill in around the base of it. The “flowers” are fake ones from a craft store and I just glued on to spots on the sticks. I think it would look good even without those. But this is very versatile! Because if you are a glamorous witch or maybe a more gothic witch, you can change this up in whatever way suits your style!
Here are some other stick ideas that I have not done yet but I am very interested in! Here’s a stick pentagram on a bedroom wall. This looks like branches fastened to a wall that you can hang necklaces from. And there are two versions of a hanging stick pentagram where you can hang herbs or dried flowers from: one and two.

Lastly, I just wanted to share this post again because it is also an awesome bedroom decoration. It can be used for hanging pictures, or spells (it could be a visual, decorative grimoire) or I recently started using it to dry herbs! It looks very nice and is so useful!
My sister made this by purchasing an old large picture from a thrift store (maybe $3-$5?) She pulled everything off of it and just kept the outer frame. She then spray painted it teal (there are chips in spots now where you can see the gold frame that was underneath but I like that look!) She bought chicken wire (very cheap!) and stapled it to the back. I looked at it and cannot tell if she used a staple gun or not. If a frame is thin enough (the one in the link is fairly thin) you should be able to use a regular stapler. BUT!! if it won’t work, using a staple gun is easy! I recently purchased the cheapest staple gun I could find at a hardware store, I think it was like $8.99. I am by no means a tough person, I am petite but I have used it for a couple projects by myself and it is very manageable! So please don’t let the idea of a stable gun scare you away. In fact I fixed one of my bird feeders with it and I can tell you, the more I’ve used it the more empowered I feel because I am not relying on my husband to fix things for me!
Important Note
I just wanted to tell everyone, that I am not the type of person that haunts these places. I do not constantly go to thrift stores and yard sales. I know there are some people who check them out all the time, but that is not me, and yet I have found so many wonderful things! So I just wanted to reassure you that I’m not telling you that you need to go crazy and spend all your time looking for deals. However, please keep them in mind as a resource. I have found many inexpensive decorations in my life and I don’t go to thrift stores/yard sales every weekend. So you can find these deals too as long as you try to make it to these places every once in awhile. I hope this helped!

Illusions part one

Tentatively, Maya poked her head out from her crouched position behind the bank counter. Her ears twitched slightly, listening for the footsteps of any potential customers. Gradually, the thump of heavy approaching footsteps came within earshot. There they are, she grinned mischievously. She ducked back down to her previous position behind the counter. In a small puff of smoke, her appearance changed.
Maya, now taking the form of a Growlithe, emerged from her hiding spot to greet the two Pokémon approaching the bank.
“Morning! How can I help you two today?” she asked.
The taller of the two, a Togekiss named Dulce, responded, “Good morning to you too, Maya.” She proceeded to tip her satchel upside down, unleashing a cascade of Poké onto the counter. “We’re just here to drop off our haul.”
Maya’s eyes widened. “Where did you find all this?”
The other Pokémon, a Phanpy named Chamomile, chimed in, “A new dungeon popped up. We investigated it, of course,” she puffed out her chest with pride, a confident smile on her face.
Tail wagging, Maya took out Dulce’s and Chamomile’s shared bank box meant for their exploration funds, and unlocked it with one of the many silver keys she kept stored away in a hidden compartment. With one paw, she swept up the large pile of Poké and herded it into the purple container. Closing the bank box, Maya returned it to its original spot behind the counter.
Reverting back to her original form, Maya leaned against the counter. “Are you two going to the bonfire tonight?”
Nodding enthusiastically, Chamomile responded, “Of course. Pixel says they have some new ghost stories to tell.” The quadruped turned her head towards Dulce. “How about you?”
Dulce cocked her head slightly, contemplating the question. She sighed, shaking her head. “Sorry, I don’t think I can make it. I promised Bloom that we would tidy up the Archive tonight,” she said with a rueful smile.
Chamomile nodded in understanding. “That’s cool. Don’t worry, there’s always next time!”
With the matter settled, the two Pokémon waved their goodbyes to Maya and set off towards the Falling Petals Café. Maya leaned back on her haunches, looking up towards the midday sky. The bonfire, huh? I wonder what stories Pixel will tell tonight. They usually consist of a bunch of Pokémon camping in the middle of nowhere where no one can help them. For some reason, the woods they’re in are always inhabited by some mysterious monster that kidnaps most of the campers until it’s then taken down by the lone survivor. I hope tonight’s stories shake things up a bit.
Noon turned into evening, and the shadows in the town square extended until they met, partially blanketing a section of the intricate mosaic that covered the center of the square. Each minuscule stone in the non-shadow covered section was tinged a deep gold by the sunset’s glow. Maya watched this endless dance between light and shadow.
She stretched and yawned, arching her back after a long day of sitting still. It’s been quite a slow business day. I think I’ll close up early. With that thought, Maya leaped over the counter, landing with a flip on the mosaic that had been warmed by the sun. Relishing in the pleasant heat of the tile, Maya sauntered off towards the base of Moonlight Hill.
Passing by the old berry farm, Maya spotted Flynn out in the fields, harvesting numerous summertime crops. Taking care not to trample Flynn’s pride and joy, Maya approached the older Pokémon.
The Zorua nodded her head in greeting. “Evening, Flynn.”
Glancing up from his work, Flynn responded gruffly, “Evening.” With that, he returned to his endeavors.
Maya trailed behind him, attempting to make small talk with the Camerupt. “Are you coming to the bonfire tonight? I have some great illusions planned!”
Without missing a beat, Flynn responded while shaking an oran tree so that the berries may fall into the baskets on his back, “Yes, I’ll be at the bonfire. I won’t be staying long, however.”
Puzzled, Maya stopped in her tracks. “Why not?”
This time, Flynn turned around to answer her latest question. “Haven’t you paid attention to the weather reports? The storm’s coming.”
Maya’s ears pricked up in apprehension. “You don’t mean...” she trailed off, her unspoken words understood.
Flynn nodded in confirmation. “That’s right. Marlow predicted that the Eternal Storm would hit tonight, and that it should last till the end of the week.”
“Oh,” was all Maya could say in response, her previous joviality squashed by Flynn’s words.
Flynn’s eyes softened in understanding. “Sorry, Maya.”
Lifting her head, Maya flashed a cheeky smile, undeterred by the ominous weather forecast. “You know what, Flynn? It’s alright. All of us at the bonfire, we’re going to have a great time, storm or no storm.”
Flynn nodded slowly, “Just be careful. I’d feel awful if any of you got caught in the downpour.”
Maya waved a paw, trying to ease Flynn’s concerns. “Don’t worry. We’ll be sure to get indoors before the rain starts.”
The Camerupt visibly relaxed, his worries seemingly eased at the moment. “So be it. Just let me put away my things and I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
Eyes twinkling, Maya responded, “Alright! See you in a bit!”
With that last statement of exuberance, Maya bounded away towards Moonlight Hill’s base.
Reaching the small campsite, Maya took a seat on an ancient log, the bark peeling away in several locations. It seems no one else has arrived yet. I wonder, what form should I try to amaze them with tonight. Amaura, no. I’ve been doing that one a lot lately. Solosis, no. I need to perform one that’s a lot more advanced. Her features lightened up, clearly pleased with her answer. That’s it! I know just what I’ll do tonight!
A few minutes passed as Maya waited. To her surprise, Flynn was the first Pokémon to arrive.
Curling up near the fire pit, Flynn unleashed Flamethrower, lighting up the kindling that had been prepared for such an occasion.
Letting out a small wisp of smoke, the Camerupt rested his head on his forelegs that formed a makeshift pillow. In a few minutes, a steady stream of snores erupted from the now sleeping Pokémon.
He’s asleep. I should probably transform now while no one is watching. Focusing her mind on the form she wanted to present, Maya, with much exertion, created the illusion of a Lucario. There we go. Her false Lucario self grinned in delight at her accomplishment.
By the time the sun’s last rays shrank away from the horizon, Maya could see through the dark blue of night the other bonfire attendants gathering towards her current location.
Chamomile and Pixel arrived together, with the Phanpy carefully balancing a tray of cups on her back, while Pixel held a small bag of marshmallows between their beak.
Maya strolled over to them, smiling widely. “Evening, you two! Chamomile, what’s in the cups?”
Setting down her tray, Chamomile responded, “Oh, you know. The odd assortment of juices. Oran, pecha, rawst, cheri.”
Maya gestured a paw towards one cup of cheri juice. “May I?”
“Of course.” Chamomile nudged the cup towards Maya with her trunk. “Enjoy! Pixel made them!”
Maya lapped at the sweet scarlet concoction, a few droplets running down her muzzle. She used one paw to wipe away the red beads of juice.
Pixel floated towards Maya’s illusionary blue self, eagerly trying to gauge her reaction. “Well? What do you think?”
“It was great!”
Pixel beamed, clearly pleased with the praise. “You’re quite welcome. Maya, it seems you’ve challenged yourself by taking on the form of Lucario.”
Smiling sheepishly, Maya replied, “Yeah, I decided to do something special for tonight’s bonfire. Well, what do you think?”
“It looks amazing, Maya!” Chamomile said, already digging into the bag of marshmallows.
Pixel nodded in agreement. “Indeed. You’ve improved.”
Letting the illusion fade, Maya settled back on to the log, cup beside her. “Now,” she gestured towards Pixel, “what’s tonight’s story going to be about? Ghosts, ghouls, Pokémon lost in the woods?”
Pixel shook their head, a smirk plastered on their face. “Oh no,” they began. “Tonight’s story is a bit different.”
Maya gulped. Oh snap. What do they have planned?

Pesto, ciabatta bread, sliced mozzarella, basil, sliced tomatoes, pepper, we added some charcuterie cuts also. Fruit bowl of oranges, strawberries, apples Pre Dinner Snack The cone artists ice cream truck Unicorn Cup Sunday Dinner Flatbread pizzas and corn on the cob side fruit Monday AM We had toasted everything Bagels with Smoked Salmon, cream cheese, dill, and capers We also cut up a watermelon � !
We packed our favourite night time drinks like jack, rum, tequila and mostly mixed with mango juice and Minute Maid fruit punch. There is a freezer so bring ice!!!!

A Coffee Guide For The End Of The World
End times. The fall of man. Dark fates foretold in ancient scriptures, intuited by man, writ large across our modern skies. Now more than ever it’s important that we prepare for the coming end of days. If you don’t have your ducks in a row by now for the basics of disaster preparedness then do yourself a favor—turn off your computer box, stop reading this article, and get yourself to the nearest general store for basic supplies.
Are you ready? Read on.
If you’re anything like me, you’re already well-equipped to deal with the coming onslaught of emergencies headed our way, both man-made and God-sent. But with the basics out of the way, now is the time to wonder: do you have enough coffee and coffee-making essentials stored properly to survive in your basement, first floor, second floor, garage, office, vehicles, and emergency bug-out bag? If the answer is no, this is your listicle.
I have extensively researched this topic over countless sleepless nights, and created some brand new tips on how to keep up your supply of delicious coffee in the dark days before us. Coffee will serve so many purposes after the fall of man. Whether to remind you of the comforts of the before-times, serve as goods for bartering, or merely to put some pep in your step while you’re out patrolling the perimeter, you’ll be glad you took our advice.
A proper prepper stores the perfect water.
Your hot water tank will be a go-to for emergency water when the wells run dry and the aquifers are tainted, but a 55-gallon drum of emergency water is an essential now, before civilization comes crashing down around us. Since you’ll be using at least some of that water for coffee, ensure that your 55-gallon barrel lifesaver is treated for both safety as well as maximum brew potential.
Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood and Dr. Christopher H. Hendon have written Water For Coffee, a Sprudgie Award-nominated book which we recommend adding to your basement analog library (because when the grid freezes up and the cloud goes *poof*, your Kindle will be kindling).
We asked Mr. Colonna-Dashwood, a UK Barista champion and World Barista Championship finalist, for his tips on storing water for coffee after the apocalypse. He offered some recommendations: “A food-grade water container, precise scales to .2 of a gram, our book, [and] a calculator to figure out the sums and a selection of mineral slats to add.”
“The water should be distilled to start with,” Colonna-Dashwood added. That means if you’re collecting rain water, you’ll need to plan ahead. An AeroPress for every disaster kit.
In terms of size, functionality, durability, and ease-of-use, the AeroPress should be thought of as the de facto Proper Prepper brew method du jour. An AeroPress can fit in your bug-out bag, it’s lightweight, and can be used to store all kinds of things when not being used for coffee brewing—gold nuggets, human teeth, or whatever passes for currency in our darkest timeline. Most importantly, in my opinion, is the AeroPress’s ability to brew at lower temperatures. Boiling water will be a luxury, or in the worst cases, a necessity for killing toxins that have leeched into your water supply from the ruined world above. Boiling takes a good deal of fuel, and any steps one can take to lessen the impact on your limited fuel supply should be considered. With an AeroPress, you’ll only need to heat your water to 180 for a decent cup of prepper brew. That’s good!
But perhaps the best part is that the AeroPress is a relatively inexpensive brew method to stockpile. Hoard some now while paper money still has value, and spend the money you’ll save on preparing a full-size aquaculture system for your tilapia farm—a fabulous source of renewable protein and fertilizer.
Consider your coffee options.
Sure, keeping a healthy supply of whole bean stored in your basement freezer is a fine idea—just tape over that one-way valve to avoid freezer burn. When the grid inevitably collapses, transfer the goods to your deep-dug root cellar. When the time is right, you could use a quality hand grinder to grind your stash, but that’s only if you have the strength of heart, spirit, and body…not to mention the appendages necessary for such a task. No, friend, it just wouldn’t be prudent to put all your eggs in the whole bean basket.
But what about storing green and roasting at home? A vocal faction of preppers believe that storing green coffee, then pan-roasting it, is best for maximum storability and use as a bartering currency. My belief is that one should prep for practicality and convenience without sacrificing too much quality, so I believe that while green coffee is arguably the best way to ensure the freshest possible prepper product, the amount of time and energy required to roast and grind the coffee is impractical and inconvenient. A home roaster might prep this way, but the Average Joe should heed my recommendation: pre-ground coffee, nitrogen flushed, and stored the best way possible will yield the finest results.
The market for this kind of coffee product is moving quickly. In the past, we’ve written on Sprudge about Perfect Coffee, which was acquired last year by Blue Bottle. I support and recommend getting yourself a month’s worth of pre-ground Perfect Coffee for the end of days. Store the pre-ground bags in a ziploc bag with hand-warmers, and vacuum that sucker. When the sun goes dark and you’ve got little hope left, you’ll be glad you don’t have to hand-grind a freezer pleaser, and instead can use the best pre-ground this lonely, dying planet has to offer.

A proper boil.

If the internet is down, which it probably will be, use your HAM radio to announce your current and best profiles. (HAM will be like Twitter, Slack, and Snapchat all rolled into one after the world ends.)
In Conclusion
In the prepper economy, coffee is good as gold. But all the coffee in the world won’t mean a thing if you aren’t prepared in advance. Make the necessary purchases now, while the internet is still up and functioning, and be sure to invest in a renewable and refined source of water collection above all else. Now is the time to prepare for the end. Because after all, you never know when today is merely the day before…
