Chapter 22 - This Was Not the Spa I was Looking For

Uuuhhh, I don't even know what this was. I had an idea and then this other idea fought the first one and won? so, it's completely different than what I had in mind, but ya know what? its written and done.

There is slight SLIGHT angst, but everything is good in the end :)

f1 Y/n L/n and Max Verstappen are out of the Belgium Grand Prix after the Red Bull of Verstappen hit the back of L/n. The latter skidded across the track before rolling over. L/n will be looked over at the medical site, especially after her last DNF back in Japan.

Once again, you were hanging upside down, in the rain. But thankfully, this time you were conscious and talking.

You pressed the button that immediately went to your panicking race engineer.

“I’m fine Mitch. Stupid rain. This was definitely not the Spa I was looking forward to. You tell my asshole of a teammate that he owes me.”

You switched your radio off before Mitch could reply. You were fuming as the marshals were trying to get you out once again. Your race suit was becoming wetter and wetter by the minute. Your back ached as you tried to move.

So, how did this all happen?

You had been able to get around Max, per team request to make way on the track that was a little less rainy. Apparently, Max thought that you were trying to get the jump on him and completely rammed the back of your RB20, sending you flying. It was definitely a mirror reflection of Azerbaijan 2018.

How you ended up rolled over once again, you didn’t know. Maybe your car just didn’t have great balance when it came to kerbs and getting rear-ended.

In a few minutes, the marshals were able to get you out. As you stretched when you got out, your eyes landed on Max’s RB20 with its nose crumpled and wheel hanging off. You smirked under your helmet.

“Serves him right.”

You two were doing amazing that weekend. Max had gotten pole once again, and you were right behind him. Except that Charles was so close behind Max most of the race. Mitch had given you the 2-1 and had told you that GP had also given the Dutchman the same order.

There was still time for you to have given the position back, but you were quicker on the slicks. You could have easily brought home another 1-2 race.

But now Charles would probably get his third win of the season because Max was too selfish.

You watched as he climbed out of his own cockpit and your blood began to boil. He not only ruined his race, but yours as well. Your arms were crossed as you stood in the rain. Replays of the wreck were playing on the big screens, just for your enjoyment.

The longer you watched, the angrier you got.

A push to your arm brought your eyes from the big screen to the Dutch driver.

“The fuck was that?” he angrily questioned.

Your eyebrow raised under your helmet. Although you were shorter, you knew how to throw your weight around. So, you shoved his shoulder back.

“Me? The fuck was that with you Max. I was given priority! This was your fault!” you shouted, earning looks from the marshals around the two of you.

Max just glared. “My fault? That was clearly a rookie mistake.”

He pushed you again.

You let out a dark chuckle. “Rookie mistake? No Max. That was a you mistake.”

Your pointer finger dug into his chest, earning you another shove. One that sent you to the ground. You were now down, looking up at Max as he glared down at you. Tears welled up in your eyes as you watched him stalk away.

A marshal was quick to help you to your feet. Max didn’t ride back with you to the paddock and walked the entire way. You, however, took advantage of the ride back and immediately tried to hide inside your drivers room when you got back. You kept your helmet on the entire time and wanted to refuse to go to the medical room. Mitch was adamant about you going since the last time you were bruised pretty badly.

She made sure it was quick: just a check over. After, your race engineer left you to yourself. While you undressed and peeled off your wet race suit, your mind started swimming.

Feelings of guilt and anxiety were building in your core. Soon, you were beginning to sob as you sat on your little bed. Really, all you wanted to do was curl up and sleep, preferably with your boyfriend, who was all the way in the Ferrari garage.

Your sobs quieted down as your eyes began to droop. Taking a nap right now seemed to be a good choice as you lied down on the small bed, curling up in a ball. A nap would keep you safe from whatever was going on. You didn’t have to deal with anything if you were asleep.

Right as you were falling asleep, Max had just gotten back to the garage. His helmet was in his hands and his eyes were to the floor, missing the disapproving looks from everyone. On the way back, he had time to think about what he had done.

Yes, he knew that you were given priority, but didn’t know exactly why. You didn’t seem faster on the slicks or were gaining. He didn’t expect you to go around him like that. And now looking back, he could see that you were making a way for him by getting rid of some water on the track so he could get more grip.

What he didn’t expect was a shove to the back and a punch to the face. He barely had time to turn around before he landed on his ass on the concrete of the garage. He was so taken back that he really couldn’t understand what was going on.

All he knew was that his face hurt, his ass hurt, and his pride hurt.

How could he have done that to you?

When he got his bearings, he finally saw a certain Monegasque be held back from jumping on him. Spits of French and English were thrown at him, and he deserved it. Once he was back on his feet, Arthur took two handfuls of his race suit and pulled him down.

There was hardly a height difference, but right now Arthur looked a lot bigger than Max did.

Arthur leaned close to Max’s face.

“How dare you? You know that she would do anything for you and what do you do to thank her? You push her down. You break her down. You blame her for your mistake.”

Silence was all that Max could offer.

Arthur scoffed as he let go.

“You’re no better than her parents.”

With that, he left and walked toward your room. He harshly pushed the door open, only to find you sound asleep, oblivious to the world outside. Arthur turned off the lights before gently climbing into your bed. He didn’t know how the two of you had fit, but you did.

He guessed that you must have sensed him as you turned over and dug your head into his neck almost immediately. Arthur pulled out his phone before googling flights back to Monaco, back to home. He’d keep you in his pocket if he had anything to do it.

Max had gotten a long talking to after everything was over. Christian probably screamed at him for over an hour, plus what GP and then what Mitch had to say after. He had wanted to apologize beforehand, but it seemed as though Arthur didn’t wat Max near you within a 25 foot radius.

And when the Dutchman thought he could speak to you at the hotel, he had to find out the hard way that you had left that afternoon to go back to Monaco before the second Italian Grand Prix. Max huffed as he thought over what he should do.

Just as you had anxiety and guilt about the incident, Max dubbed his as 10 times worse. This was it. In the past, everyone told him that he always messed up teammates for other drivers. That’s why Daniil didn’t work out, or Carlos, or Daniel, or Pierre, or Alex, or Checo. One way or another, Max always fucked it up.

Well, that’s what his mind was telling him.

And he didn’t want you to just be another name to the list.

So with phone in hand, and pilot on call, he made the executive decision to fly back to Monaco. He knew exactly where your apartment was, since you gave me the address when you first moved in and a key for emergencies.

When he landed, he went straight to the grocery store. Knowing that you had the cooking skills of Arthur and Charles combined and the pickiness of Lando amplified, he guessed that you and Arthur probably haven’t had dinner yet. So, he grabbed ingredients to make pizza. Simple enough.

He drove to your flat and was suddenly enveloped with fear. He hit his head on the steering wheel once he parked.

“I’m so stupid,” he whispered to himself as he gazed at the lights on in the windows. His head was still on the wheel as he turned to look down. What he failed to notice was you looking through the window.

“Cheri? Is everything alright?” you heard Arthur call out from the kitchen. You two had just burnt some pasta while trying to make dinner. You gazed down at the familiar car parked in front.

“Cheri?”

Now Arthur was close, also looking out the window.

“It’s Max.”

The Monegasque scoffed. “What’s he doing here?”

You hummed. “He’s probably wanting to apologize. I know what he’s like. Thur, he didn’t mean it.”

Arthur’s eyes changed from cold to understanding. He had heard enough stories from his own brother along with gossip in the paddock about Max’s childhood (or lack thereof).

He huffed once before saying, “Go to him and then invite him up.”

He watched as your eyes lit up, before you placed a kiss on his lips. A smile formed on his lips as he watched you slide shoes on and go out the door. Arthur turned back to the kitchen. He guessed he needed to clean up before you invited thee Max Verstappen into the house.

Max was so caught in his head that he missed you peering in. Only when you slightly knocked on the door, did he jump. He accidentally pressed the horn, making it echo down the empty road. He quickly unlocked the door, which let you slip in.

His blue eyes gazed into yours before he started to cry. You looked at him with a frown on your face as he tried to desperately wipe his tears. He took many harsh inhales, trying to get his emotions under control.

Max expected you to yell, scream, and hit at him. Yet, you gently placed a hand on his back and started to comfort him, like he’s done many times before.

You let him cry and cry until he was ready to talk.

“I’m such an asshole,” was the first thing that escaped his lips after his sobs started to break.

You chuckled. “I could have told you that.”

Max’s lips curved upwards in a small smile before going straight once again. He took another shuddering breath before continuing.

“I don’t want to repeat the past. I am so sorry for what I did to you, that was unfair of me. I wanted to apologize before you left, but I was too late. And I didn’t want to end today without apologizing to you. Because I don’t want you to be another teammate that I failed.”

He turned to you, eyes still glossy with leftover tears.

You leaned to give him a hug across the dash, one that he was thankful for.

He was the first one to part, still wiping at his eyes. You only gazed at him with compassion. When he was done sniffling, you started to talk.

“Max, look at me please?”

He turned his head so his bloodshot blue eyes could look at you. He looked utterly exhausted and your heart broke. If he was anything like you, you knew how much guilt he was carrying.

“You’re not, we’re not, going to repeat the past. I just need you to understand that I am your team player. And when I’m given a team order, I will follow it every time.”

Max’s head nodded in agreement.

“I’m sorry.”

“I already forgave you before I left the paddock. I heard Christian yelling at you.”

A snort left his nose. “It was probably for the best.”

The car was filled with a comfortable silence before Max broke it.

“Did you and Arthur have dinner yet?”

“Max. What do you think?”

“I’m going to take that as a no. Good think I bought groceries. Seriously, I am getting you and the Leclercs cooking lessons for Christmas.”

“I’m not that bad.”

“You almost burnt down my entire kitchen.”

“Not on purpose.”

HORANGI HEADCANONS

Every single thing i'm gonna write down here is how I personally picture Horangi and, as i said in my pinned, if you don't like it scroll away, bye bye.

• He is an idiot, not in a bad way, but in a genuine way.

It's not like he is dumb or something, but he goes on with his days by core memory and that only, this leads to something happening every five - ten minutes or so.

• This man is the definition of feral and they send him on the field like he's a wild animal ready to take down anyone.

He has fun, let's be real, he finds it funny when he hit targets and put down enemies even at hands in hands combat, he lives for it, also he's always ready for a fight, both on and off the field, big grin on his face.

• He lives to scare people.

The dark rituals skin? Yeah he asked for it and i picture the red parts to be reflective so they're only visible on certain lights. Tecnically speaking, i picture it to be good when they need backup or snipers looking over them at nigh, practically he walks around the base in the middle of the night with it on just to scare the shit out of whoever cross his way in the dark.

• He knows he's pretty but the mask stay ON.

Let's be real here, the man know how pretty he is, i picture him using his look to go away with things before joining the army, or before they ruined his face. He still thinks he looks good, but part of his brain refuses to take the mask off not because he's scared they cpuld find him in the base, but because he hates to see the looks of pity of the poeple when they see how he is right now.

• Your food? Nop. HIS food.

If you eat something different than what je's eating be ready to say gpodbye to it 'cause he will definitely ask for a bite, and it's never just a bite. Never. He knows how to do the puppy eyes and knows how to use them.

• He never spoke with anyone for a whole year.

I picture him not knowing any english when he joined and, while he was still learning, he never spoke or never answered to anything in a whole year, both because he didn't know how and because he kinda felt bad not being able to speak correctly. When he started tho it was the end, man never shut up.

• He's tiny.

Listen, i get that canonically they did him almost the same height as König, but i can't help to picture him being like 1.75/1.80 max. And compared to others? He is indeed tiny. Once König picked him up like it was nothing and he never recovered from that.

• Bisexual king.

He's way too chaotic not to be a bisexual, idk what else to say about this.

• His ringtone is a nightmare and once Oni fought him to change it.

His ringtone? Ring ding dong by shinee. Not because he actually likes it, but because he knows how mad people gets when it starts ringing and they can't so nothing to shut it down. He even dance on it just to piss the others off even more.

• Other than that? Man lis a metalcore baby.

He loves it, he lives for it, he knows every band on this planet, he just really likes it. Sometimes he even listen to deathcore or heavy/nu metal, but metalcore? You can find him knowing every word of every song possible.

•Feral, but he gets hurt pretty easily.

Listen, he loves to piss people off, but he also keeps reminding them how much that's his love language and how he keeps doing it cause he loves having them around. When they look genuinely pissed off? This hurts him and he goes days without doing anything because he really thinks people actually hates him, he's hurt by it and it took the same person to say out loud that they care about him to stop the bad thoughts he has.

While being free and creative you could also be stubborn and harsh which in time will dwindle your creativity. At your best you have many skills, talents, ideas. At your worst you are the conflict between earth and air. Insecure and at times not compatible with yourself. Open yourself up do not keep shutting yourself down.

Fandom Events in 2023

I made it to a wrestling show! Since they never go near me and my life is what it is, I really can't manage more than one a year, and I've got to be lucky to get that to work, but this was a big deal and I'm so happy that I could make it happen!

ALSO I MADE UP A FUCKING PAIRING AND GOT IT TO THE #1 FOR BOTH PARTIES INVOLVED you know what this counts as an event LMAOOOOO i'm thinking no one should actually have this power

Upcoming Projects

If I ever stop bemoaning my perceived lack of skill, I've got 2/3 of a fic that Vamp prompted dialogue for, largely me writing something fluffy and saccharine because she was trying to write smut and we were both trying to write out of our wheelhouses lol

Writing reflection

Well! 2023 was quite a year, honestly. I was going to be like OH HOLY SHIT about my word count but when I took our collabs, it dropped so fast, so that's good, I guess (???). I'm still so happy I discovered wrestling, because it's been easily 12 years since I had this amount of creativity for a single fandom. And this year I really stretched out and started writing new stuff within the wrestling fandom! That's exciting (depending what you followed me for, I suppose LOL).

But more than anything else, this year I looked at what I wanted to write and said, FUCK IT, I'M WRITING IT. And I started dropping horror shit I fully expected that no one would read, because I didn't think people came to fandom for spooky stuff??? And lo and behold, y'all really showed up for those fics! I'm forever grateful you saw me writing absolutely batshit horror and were like yes, Katy, we will also read this creepfest. So much love.

I also tried to write more smut, which I am not particularly adept at, and also some darker themes. I do try to write lighthearted things, haha, but my own mental state has been not stellar, and I think that tends to come out in my fics. And I started writing femslash, which this fandom needs so much more of! So. All in all, a real banger year for me in fandom. I'm pretty proud of a LOT of the fics I wrote this year.

And, obviously, 2023 would not be complete with me mentioning that Vamp and I produced an epic shit ton of words together, and MORE IMPORTANTLY had an absolute blast in doing so. What a whirlwind writing together has been!!! I think we've really gotten to this point of just great flow, and I'm super proud of how we work so well like we do. We DO HAVE SOMETHING ELSE COMING but we've been "planning" it since August and haven't written it yet, so HAHAHA. Anyway. Expect that in 2025, or something. ;)

Captain's Quarters were colder and darker than the rest of the ship. Not the most suitable place for reading or working, and clearly not the default mode of the room. Though, maybe the Captain dimmed the lights for a reason.

He was sitting by his desk, half laying on it. Was he sleeping? Just resting? Max has seen someone write while sitting like that.

He cleared his throat. "Captain, can we talk?"

The man half jumped off his chair, spooked by the sudden question. Yep, he was sleeping. "I- wha-", he looked around and spotted the vicar. "Max? Yeah, sure, everything alright?"

"I'm fine, thank you."

"Good. That's good," he said quietly. "Sorry, I, um, must've fallen asleep while reading something."

"I have to admit, that doesn't sound normal, Captain. Are you alright?"

"Yes." An answer said too quickly, as if it's always ready to be used in conversations like this. He was clearly not alright, but would definitely do his best to hide it.

"It's just-", Max paused, looking for the right words, "You seem to, well, take miss Leonora's task more seriously than you usually do."

"She lost her husband, surely we should help her find some peace by finding his flask."

"There's something else, I can see it's bothering you." The man tried to keep his face as blank from any sign of emotions, but Max could easily see through him. Captain might have had different problems than his old 'flock' had, but he was still a human who needed help, too. Maybe even more than ever before during their travels. "Opening up may help."

"You sound like my therapist back on Earth."

"You had a therapist?"

"I-" he shook his head. "Forget I said anything about that."

"If you had one, then you surely know talking to someone would help."

"It's nothing, really, don't worry about it." He turned away to face the window and took a deep breath, assuming Max would stop at that. Was he staring at the starry sky behind the glass, or at his own, barely visible reflection, showing how sadness was slowly showing itself on his face.

"You can trust me."

"Law, you won't quit, will you?"

Max smirked. "No, I don't think I will."

He sighed and sat on the desk. "Fine. You win."

"It's for your own good."

"Yeah, yeah. Um." He paused for a moment, wondering where to begin. "Remember back in the beginning, you asked why I've decided to help Phineas instead of turning him in, and I replied that it's because I have...family on Hope?"

Max nodded. "I must admit, I thought you were joking back then. Not that I think so now."

"Don't worry, I'm not surprised..."

"Please, continue."

"Yeah, well. Um." Tobias covered his face. "Sorry, I...It's hard to talk about this, I haven't really um, mentioned this before. Not that I don't trust anyone, it's just that I..."

"...don't want to bother anyone even if it's something important? It shows."

"Smart ass. Though, that's why you're cool. You know that, right?"

"Stop trying to switch the topic, Tobias."

"Fine, fine. Ugh." He closed his eyes. "I took it too personally because it reminded me of how my wife is still back on Hope." His voice cracked, hands cletching into fists to hide their trembling, as he continued. "It felt like a punch in the gut, that I'm here and Klara's...not." He wiped a tear off his cheek and added quietly, "I miss her so much."

"I'm so sorry. I-" Max looked at him. Seeing him like this, sobbing and trembling, curled up like a sad teacup canid, wasn't something he had expected to see. Thank Law I closed the door... He walked to the desk and gave him a hug. "I shouldn't have brought this up. I'm so sorry."

"It's fine, it's..." he sniffed, "I um...think it helped a bit. Maybe even feel better now..."

"Can you stop lying about your feelings for one moment?"

"No...maybe..." Tobias muttered. "Phineas called yesterday and complained about how I still haven't made up my mind about skipping the Hope. It's not that I don't want to, it's that- well, I'm afraid of what I'll find there."

"Did you ask Phineas about her?"

"After we left Edgewater, yes. He said that according to the ship logs, everything's fine. She's fine." He took a deep breath to calm down a bit, and to stop thinking about all that could've gone wrong. "But still, I'm...I don't think I'm ready..."

"Then we'll go when you're ready."

"Thank you, Max. You're an amazing friend."

"You're welcome."

"You, um, think we could...well. Talk like this more often? I think it made me feel better, honest."

"Of course," Max smiled, "Now sit here while I get you some water."

Ok me and a friend got talking and. heres (some of) the things I personally would do if tasked with rewriting Mystreet.

[very brief mentions of Katelyn, Garte + the Lycan parents :>]

Im totally stealing this idea from @bread--squid--uwu but Aph's name is Aphrodite now. Makes sense with the guys all being into her, still keeps the nickname, makes sense for Sylvanna etc

Reducing the ages. It makes noooooo sense to me that theyre all like, 35. They're fresh out of college, like 21-23.

Magic would either be a big part of the world building or removed entirely. Not a fan of the soft magic system. If removed, Lucinda would be a more like, herbs + the moon kinda witch you know? She also likes DnD

knowing more about peoples backstory! Laurance in particular has such little clarification on his family and upbringing

We get to know about all the shady goings on of the Ro'Meave household because theres no way Garte is a good man i do NOT trust him

Katelyn + Travis don't get back together

Aphmau goes to a different college to the others and meets Aaron (max of 2 years older) there because I'd personally like it more if the rest of the group didn't know him beforehand! That way Gar and Laur are able to be upset with the idea of him. I like the idea that they get so in their own heads that they plan out a whole argument that Aaron just. doesn't take the bait on at ALL and they realise that maybe theyre in the wrong for jumping to conclusions.

The ultima Werewolf thing would have to be totally revamped idc. I dont remember how its explained in the show, but I like the idea of it being a curse on the family possibly by Lucinda's ancestors. (Melissa + Lucinda could have a moment too!)

KC has like a common Japanese name because it reflects her fear of being forgettable (?). Also she is actually asian

CHARACTERS HAVE LAST NAMES. Except for Lucinda because again, I want the magic to be more prevalent and I think its cute that shes kinda the odd one out

Zane is Autistic and its discussed! I want Garroth to learn to respect his boundaries

On the same note, Garroth and Zane actually make up. I think Zane and Laurance being worsties is fun but the brothers need to be on neutral ground at LEAST.

Aaron is introduced early on. I don't really care how, but him being introduced half way into season 1 is partly the reason Aarmau is so rushed

People have identities. Not everyone needs an exploration or a label, but at the very least, Katelyn is Bisexual throughout the series and Garroth, Laurance, Melissa, Lucinda and Teony are some flavour of gay

Teony is more relevant. she doesn't have to be in the main group but I'd love to see her more like she works at the mall or smthn

The Garroth/Laurance/Aph dynamic changes majorly. They still constantly are trying to one-up each other by sweeping her off her feet but its more playful than anything serious. They get super competitive abt it but its still a but of fun. Whether she likes either of them isn't important. What is, though, is that Gar + Laur are absolutely unknowingly competing for eachother's attention. Maybe theres a cringy little moment where theyre like, "Well I would take her to get SUSHI!" "well I would- wait I LOVE sushi!" you know what I mean? also they actually have a conversation about the kiss at the play instead of just incoherently screaming (theres also some of that tho)

The Lycan family dont get a redemption arc

Dante and Aphmau need something because they could be sooo good but their dynamic is lacking so theyre cousins now. Maria and Sylvanna are sisters or something i dont know.

Also, Gene doesnt have that weird thing going on with Aph in high-school. He's now her friend who gives her a twix sometimes and hisses at Ivy

Totally biased but Id really want Garroth and Laurance's queerness explored. If its a first for either or both of them, how they feel about it, how they're navigating it. I want them coming out to not be a big deal but I want it to be a realisation.

I dont remember who came up with this but Laurance had Cadenza dye his hair ginger for a while because he wanted to feel like part of the new family? adorable. love it. Also Caleb doesnt exist purely because he throws a wrench in the adoption thing

The street has a name. I dont care what but it has a name

Id do something different with the maid cafe, not sure what yet. I dont think Aph would own it, though.

Aphmau's character is more of what it was in season one. Like the girl you call when youre drunk at 2am and she makes sure you get home safe and then brings you sweets kinda vibe? shed get you out of a tough situation

Aaron + Aphmaus relationship is a more relaxed version of what it was in season one, too. They can be romantic or platonic, but they like watching movies and teasing each other not. doing whatever they do in s3 and onwards.

what are yalls thoughts on legally defining rape as penile penetration (in the uk), having it so only men can be legally rapists? (and your thoughts on people advocating for this to be changed? like do you think this is good or bad?)

"The Sexual Offences Act 2003 says that someone commits rape if all of the following happens: They intentionally penetrate the vagina, anus or mouth of another person with their penis. The other person does not consent to the penetration. They do not reasonably believe that the other person consents."

even though it happens less often, what abt women-to-woman rape and woman-to-man rape? cuz from my understanding it would be considered sexual assault, which has a max sentence of 10 years as opposed to rape w a max sentence of life, OR it would be assault by penetration defined as, "when someone puts an object or any part of the body other than their penis (for example fingers) into another person's vagina or anus, without the person's permission" with a life sentence.

couldn't this skew the UK's data on which sex is the primary rapists as only men could be? or would it be okay cuz we could still see the primary/majority sex of sexually violent criminals?

but back to the original question, it feels iffy to me cuz rape is definitely like considered worse, like in this that I linked, there's a FAQ part w the question "What happened to me doesn't fit the legal definition of rape. Does that mean it wasn't as bad?" and Rape Crisis repeatedly states throughout this page that they use "words that are meaningful to the victim or survivor, not just legal terms," so is there a case to be made that legally it should reflect that (like the word rape being more meaningful in expressing the severity than assault)?

and alternatively, is there a good reason to have only males commit rape and have "assault by penetration" seperate (even tho it's the same max sentence )?

also kinda side note: to my knowledge either sex could be charged w statutory rape.

omg hello!! i'm honoured... mini commentary under the cut ↓

starting off by saying that this fic exists almost entirely due to max's tweet during the red flag in brazil :]

what i set out to accomplish characterisation-wise was conveying that max 1. is obsessed with/"misses" lando (general knowledge) and 2. reluctantly respects oscar (not necessarily mutual) while keeping in mind that under no circumstances can he admit either, even to himself

i was mildly concerned about wrangling maxf pov because i'd mostly only written lando so far and max just has this baseline bitchy self-deprecating twang that lando is inherently exempt from by virtue of Making It, so to speak. not proud of how much quadrant i watched to ~get in the zone~ in fact the first third of the fic is just op flexing(??) that they watched the world's smallest car video lol also the concept of a flavoured air sponsor is CRAZIE to me and i felt like max would've had a real "man... guess this is my life now..." moment about it, hence the inclusion!!

the references to renault sport training camps are based on canon events. in my ignorant outsider opinion they are exactly as questionably run as the team itself <3

ah what else... ok there is sooooo much i cut last minute because i felt it didn't serve the narrative lmao. like at any given moment i have 1 million things to say about the tasty fraught maxf/lando/oscar dynamic but not everything needs to be said HERE, you know? for this story in particular i had to axe way too many lines about max's f3 season because if u think about it there is um actually no need for this man to be reflecting so deeply on his professional failures while tugging oscar's dick! he can a little tho. as a treat

As promised in my last post, I have The Goods (aptly titled “the TC Toxic Masculine Character Write-up”), starring the three darkest/most villainous roles of Tom’s career and what frameworks of toxic masculinity they communicate something about.

Analysis below the cut for courtesy.

Let’s start with the one everyone knows. Lestat de Lioncourt. He is an overwhelming, overzealous, grandiose being. His masculinity has little respect for anything outside of its purview.

This is a man who wants, and in following his wants so indulgently alienates his life-partner. He never really stops to listen to Louis and his feelings, and defuses conflict with short-term solutions. Goodness, he baby trapped Louis and used the family structure to keep him locked in their relationship. He’s dismissive and short-sighted, the very definition of “here for a good time.”, a whirlwind romance that takes and takes.

His selfishness is a defining character trait, one that the socialization of men breeds into a great many people who don’t know how to give themselves to another person in a sincere way. He fancies himself a provider, he is the particular head of the household whose notions of what is the correct time to have (ie. A good one, quit moping about the people we just killed) dictate the family unit. It’s smothering and it ends up doing damage that goes unresolved within the confines of the movie. The toxicity at work is unmitigated selfishness and so-called solutions that alienate the people around him, the inability to sincerely engage in dialogue for more than a few moments at a time.

Then we have Vincent from Collateral (2004). The aspirational masculine. Competent, handsome, calculated. The picture of cool and improvisational, Darwin, I-Ching, whatever man. He’s an absolute animal, and quite frankly, the kind of man who uses Old Spice.

His masculinity is a projection of confidence and security, the kind that strips away joy and concern and leaves a cold, focused fury in its wake. Mean-spirited in a lot of ways, he comes down on Max for every human reaction he has in a very snarky; I-don’t-know-what-the-big-deal-is way. His coolness is what many men aspire to, and just as it is for those men, it’s fake! He’s a goddamn hypocrite is what he is. His nihilistic outlook has held him back from being a happier person, someone who has an active role in his own fate. The standard parts that are supposed to be in people aren’t in him because he’s convinced himself it doesn’t matter. And guess what? It matters, it all freaking matters.

Vincent is a man composed of great envy. To quote a prior discussion I had with @power-chords on Vincent and use their awesome term- it’s not just a facile nihilism, but a facile masculinity. His whole debate with Max, his growing belligerence is the crescendo of something, a funhouse mirror where the reflection doesn’t match the man but the questions ring out for him anyway. “What the fuck are you still doing driving a cab?”, as in, “You could have been doing something else with your life if you could just see that you have a choice.” It’s substance that Vincent lacks. That substance is having the emotional intelligence and fortitude to feel and not lock it to a place where no one will ever see. This bestows upon that masculinity a fragility that is felled by a few well placed blows in one night. I’ve known a lot of men who fell apart under the weight of their feelings because they were convinced that within the context of being men that they didn’t matter. That it’s a conquest and a barrier to their goals- their perceived limitations of what they can do. It’s those limitations that are toxic, not the feelings themselves. Being confronted with that sends the stack of dominoes tumbling one by one.

Finally. The most personal example of the toxic masculine. One Frank TJ Mackey of Magnolia (1999) fame. We all know a Frank, or worse yet: some of us have BEEN one (not me tho, y’all be easy!). The kinds of things this man says, we’ve all heard it before from self-important wannabe messiahs among their big-bro-little-bro think tanks.

Everything he preaches, from the bioessentialist man drive. It’s evolutionary, anthropological, biological. That kind of bullshit, it’s ‘animal’ in the imagery, to the way that he engages with women and manipulation. It’s the kind of insecure masculinity that takes the debate stage and wins because it’s the crassest, loudest voice in the room. Frank’s the kind of guy who hangs in the same circles as your Jordan Petersons and your meninists. The leather cuffs and vests and scorn for the nice-guy.

His anger is jealousy and ego, not being enough and crafting a larger than life persona, a gimmick to drown out any notion that he’s not “man enough.”- because that’s what it all comes down to. He became the ‘man of the house’ after his father left and cared for his mother for the rest of her days. He was the one by her bedside and tending her emotional needs, and the late Mrs. Mackey still wanted her husband. The kind of complexes that creates in someone whose notion of masculinity is characterized by the father figure who often used the word “cocksucker” and left one day… Yikes. I’m not saying anything that folks on here haven’t said in more well-formed ways about him, but what’s apparent here is that he doesn’t want to ever experience that feeling of not measuring up, not being man enough again.

He's punishing all women for something his mom did in a sick delirium. He makes them ask what they did wrong because he’s projecting his own questions of what he did wrong to make his mom not want him in the end. He’s built his whole identity around it, and when even the proximity of that feeling approaches he blows the fuck up. He’s pathetic, he’s fragile, he’s feeling, and everybody’s got to bear the brunt of it when you press the button. He wants to seduce and destroy because he can’t build his self-esteem any other way. Anger and uncontrollable emotion simmering beneath that intense restless energy. It’s scary and uncomfortable and downright absurd.

I mean come on, respect the cock? Really? This is the masculine that tries to convince you of its merit and it’s skill when really? It’s just an attempt to feel better about itself at YOUR expense. And other men buy this shit too because they’re in the same emotional place! Don’t buy what he’s selling, because he’s a fuckin scam artist.

All of these different portrayals capture something real about the psyche and socialization of men, and god I find that so compelling. I feel like I’m putting this all in a jar and shaking it to see what happens. I applaud this man’s talent for moving along the spectrum in different, distinct ways to communicate the same concept. He captures it and just, relays it back to us in ways that evoke discomfort, dread, and laughs because this is so, so silly.

lumax: i know the end (this whole song gives season 4 lumax and their back and forth: max knows she has to go and she won’t let anyone else die and lucas knows too and they both just have to accept it. idk i cry if i think about them during this song.)

mileven: punisher (this one is all about meeting your heroes/meeting someone and feeling like you’ve always known them, depending on what angle you look at. the duality works well with the duality of this ship)

jancy: halloween (i’ll be whatever you want!!! works so well with the state of things in canon in this ship!!! but also there’s something very sweet and patient and loving about this song that fits them)

elmax: graceland too (it’s a love song about freedom and girls and also knowing you would follow someone wherever regardless babes)

jopper: smoke signals (do i need to explain this? no? good.)

steddie: chelsea (“so long prison boy” OBVIOUSLY but also “spit the blood back, i’m amazing that you’re alright!!!” and the idea of being forced into a role of leadership when steve and eddie were the only two who just happened upon this shit and didn’t actively start asking questions. i have a lot of feelings about this song and them.)

ronance: garden song (it’s just the vibes i think. and also just the idea of growing up and dreams becoming reality, framed with this idea of the world ending but still building a home together. idk man)

harringrove: demi moore (the simplicity of the song, the fear of being alone that surrounds billy and steve, and just the overall imagery gives me the vibes)
