There once was a truck in Nantucket
Whose creative design team said, "Fuck it!"
They made it a box
Whose gas petal locks
And real trucks from sand had to pluck it

Shadow puppets (Gale x Tav)
Tumblr media
Drawing by me, full pic here
Shadow puppets
A/N: Soft Gale x Tav, around 900 words!
“That’s an owl bear! How did you manage to make an owl bear, Gale?” you whisper yell at him as you get even closer to the wizard.
You’re both lying down next to the fire you made earlier. Gale’s hands are extended towards the hidden sky, the soft shadow cast by his fingers is moving over the wall of the cave you had camped in. You were now so close you could feel his shoulder moving against yours while he played with his hands, a smile adorning his lips.
You were transfixed by the simplicity and beauty of the shadows, and you had recognized the silhouette of an owl bear. Gale kept moving his fingers, making it look like the owl bear was licking its beak.
“How do you do it?” You move your eyes to his hands now, curious about how he had positioned them. You hear a little chuckle coming from him, and feel his breath on the skin of your face before hearing his voice, softer than you had ever heard it before “I am merely moving my hands, there’s no magic in it”.
You glance at his face, he seems to be focused despite his words “Gale, I think you have a gift for this”. The wizard looks at you now and presses his lips together before speaking again “Let me tell you a secret, I managed to do it by mere chance” he smiles at you and looks back to his hands, his eyebrows raising as he opens his mouth once more “Look! It’s getting furious, whatever did you do to anger it?”
“This” you mumble at the same time you raise your hand towards his while observing how your shadow joined the owl bear form. And then, you move your fingers so it looks like you’re flicking its head, a soft giggle leaving your mouth.
Before you have time to react Gale grabs your hand firmly, moves it so your palm stays open and your fingers spread. You can feel his soft skin as he guides you. With one hand he starts to gently caress your arm, the long fingers of the other one intertwining with yours.
You feel goosebumps on your skin and hold your breath, your eyes focused on the shadows your hands are creating. It’s beautiful. The way you can’t really say which fingers are whose, his two hands now encasing yours. It’s sensual. The way you can feel how his breath hitches when your palms press together. It’s erotic. The way he murmurs against your ear “We are designing a flower with our hands, with our touch” as his body presses against yours and the shadows forms a blossom of entangled fingers. It’s arousing.
You both start to move your hands, a soft pinch here, a bold caress there. Your heart is beating fast, you can feel it on your throat and your ears, your face gets warm and your breath quickens. You can’t look away from the shadows of your joined hands, playing with each other’s.
“Gale, this is beautiful” you manage to gasp out the words, and for once, you don’t hear his voice replying to you, just a hum that makes his chest vibrate.
Then, you finally look at your hands suspended in the air. His fingers are so alluring, you can’t resist the sudden urge to kiss them and with your fingers grasping his own you bring his hands down. Towards your face. Towards your mouth.
He can feel your hot breath on his fingertips, and he doesn’t dare exhale the air in his lungs, afraid he might break the spell you find yourself in. His eyes are fixated on your glistening lips. He feels as if time has stopped, and wants nothing more than for you to continue, to feel your mouth on his skin.
Gale can feel his own lower lip trembling in anticipation, his rib cage feels like it will explode any minute, something inside wanting to burst. It’s a sensation nothing like the one that that damned orb creates. He wanted more, he wanted more of that agonizing feeling. He desired to get addicted to this anxious warmth inside of him.
And then, when your lips touched his fingers, his eyes flicked to yours, a loud gasp escaping him, and as you looked at him with a glowing gaze he launched his whole body towards yours and captured your mouth with his own.
He could feel your heart on your tongue and it made him even more ravenous.
He needed more, the taste of you intoxicating him. Your lips overpowered his senses, he felt numb and alive at the same time, so so alive, in fact.
His nose moved smoothly along yours while your tongues moistened each other. He found himself unable to open his eyes when he separated briefly from your face, his lips pecking yours one, two times, before speaking “I hope I’m not wrong at assuming you wished for this as much as I did”
You opened your eyes and looked at his closed eyelids, then to your shadows, your bodies so close it was all a big dark spot on the cave wall. You felt like you were one, and it made you smile softly against his lips. You squeeze his hand still intertwined with yours and speak in hushed tones “You assumed correctly, Gale, now, I would gladly take a bit more”

Rewatching Lockwood & Co one of the smartest choices I think the writers made in adapting the novels was to show Lockwood on his back foot, visibly shaken, struggling. It doesn't happen often, but when it does it's that much more effective.
The entire Winkmans arc, from him trying to charm his way out of the situation and realising that he has drastically misjudged how people outside of his world react to his slick polished posh charm and that Lucy might be killed because of it you see the panic set in.
That's something that I think the series really excels at is showing that for all that they have brought up in a world where they are fighting on the front lines, they are still children who need protecting even if they don't realise it.
this is never more evident than his panic attack after the undercover agent is killed (in so far as he knows) because of his actions. that the cordial rules of polite society in so-called civilisation where killing a DEPRAC agent would simply never happen because you wouldn't be able to get away with it, their status protects them.
The idea that all the iron, salt, and silver in the world means nothing to Winkmans, that youth, money, power, status--none of those things can protect him. He has no defences for that kind of attack.
That is the most vulnerable we have ever seen him, when he can't breathe and he can't think and he just completely overwhelmed by what just happened because up until that point I think he really genuinely felt like he was in control. it's the shocking realisation that he has so much less power, and so much less control over what happens once he's outside a very specific sphere.
Lucy on the other hand never had any illusions about how much power and control she doesn't have and about the people around her. she learned at very young age that nobody else was going to stick their neck out for her and it was her job to keep herself and her friends safe. and she doesn't trust anyone to follow any kind of rules of supposed civilisation because she seen people at their worst and she presumes the worst of everybody at all times because that's been her life experience up until that point.
What I find most fascinating is Flo because she is both an observer with a foot in both worlds and also the most pragmatic, practical, level-headed person in the entire series. she is even more so than Barnes & Wade the only one with a truely healthy perspective. and I really love her scenes with George on the boat and we wouldn't have got that if it weren't for the television series and I will forever be so incredibly happy that we got telly!Flo and telly!George.
I am dying to learn how and when Lockwood decided to channel all of his energy and all of his intellect into that slick public persona and shell of confidence. who taught him that? who taught him that that was the way to achieve what he set as his goals? there has to been an example in his life and it doesn't have to be a positive example but a really strong example that he is following. and that has got me thinking more and more about writing something set pre-series.

lacy oh lacy [i just loath you lately]
name; lacy oh lacy [i just loath you lately] relationship; akutagawa ryuunosuke/nakajima atsushi rating; teen and up audiences word count; 3,236 summary;
“Don’t sacrifice yourself for me,” Atsushi replied rather seriously, and upon Akutagawa looking over at the white-haired teen he noticed the somber expression over the other along with his ombré eyes trained on the ground.
Ryuunosuke stayed silent as he allowed his fingers to slightly fidget with the bandage on his arm. It was wrapped too tight, as always. The weretiger was always afraid of Ryuunoske bleeding out should he tie the bandages too loose.
“Weretiger.”
“Say it.” Atsushi interrupted as he looked up at Ryuunosuke. His sunset-coloured eyes peered into Ryuunosuke's coal-coloured ones. “Say you won’t do stupid shit like that and get yourself hurt.
Ryuunosuke just stared at the younger with his determined gaze. There was something almost comical about it, however, there was also something… almost beautiful about it. And oh, Ryuunoske hated that too.

________________________________________
“I hate you so much,” Ryuunoske said with an exasperated sigh as he allowed Atsushi to roll his eyes as he wrapped his arm in a bandage.
“I’m not the one who told you to dive in front of me.” Atsushi retorted sharply as he snipped the bandage with a careful claw before retracting it.
“You would have gotten hit,” Ryuunoske replied simply, however, they could both hear the underlying tone underneath his words—something about how Dazai-san wouldn’t like his prized knight to be scuffed by a nobody ability user.
“I have regeneration abilities, genius,” Atsushi replied with a sigh before tapping Akutagawa’s forehead. “Did that ever cross your thick skull?”
Ryuunoske stayed silent at that rebuttal, simply letting out a sigh as if he still couldn’t believe he was in the weretiger’s presence.
“Guess not,” Atsushi replied in a bland tone as Ryuunoske did everything he could not to send a tendril of Rashomon at the weretiger.
Oh, how he hated him.
Atsushi let out a sigh as he looked over Akutagawa with a calculating and firm gaze before his eyes slightly softened looking at the older.
“At least I know that you’re all better if you’re about to attack me.” Atsushi teased with a slight snort causing Akutagawa to furrow his thin brows.
“How are you so certain I’m about to attack you, Weretiger?” Akutagawa retorted as Atsushi let out a soft hum.
“Your finger is fidgeting. I know you’re considering using Rashomon to shut me up.” Atsushi said in a confident manner as he pulled himself off of the ground and grabbed the heap of bandages from the floor.
“I’m surprised you picked up on that,” Akutagawa responded as he let out a soft cough. “Perhaps you don’t just have a spiderweb and a marble in that head of yours.”
Atsushi let out another chuckle as he turned back to face Ryuunosuke with his hand on his hip. “Your vast amount of ways that you call me dumb never cease to amaze me.” He said with an eye roll as he walked back towards Ryuunosuke and sat beside him with a sigh.
“Akutagawa?”
“What.”
The way Atsushi’s mouth was curved in a frown, however, the edge of it slightly twitched. The way Atsushi’s eyes held so many emotions. All from guilt, anger, annoyance, and… care.
He cared.
Ryuunosuke wasn’t sure just how much but… the weretiger was never good at hiding what he thought. He hated that too.
The ravenette swallowed hard before nodding his head. “Okay.”
“Okay, what?” Atsushi retorted sharply.
He hated Atsushi’s sharp tongue too. Hated how the younger ones always had a savvy or stupid response. More so he hated how Atsushi’s tongue could either deliver the softest and most genuine words that affected whoever was on the receiving end with such… brightness. With feelings that didn’t feel deserved but he appreciated nonetheless. Ryuunosuke hated how Atsushi’s words would sound like poison at times. How that tongue could cut through anything with little thought until after the words had been spoken.
Just like bullets on skin. Just like scars on skin except these hurt more. They healed just fine as well.
Like mentor, like protege, he supposed.
God he hated linking the weretiger to Dazai-san.
They truly were nothing alike but his brain couldn’t relay that message to his consciousness.
“I promise I won’t do stupid shit to get myself hurt at your expense.” Ryuunoske coughed out as he realized that this was the second promise he made to this brat.
He hated that too.
“Good.” Atsushi simply responded as he laid his head back against the couch, perhaps waiting for Ryuunoske to leave. He didn’t though, instead he looked at the younger and the conflict of emotions on his face despite his eyes being closed.
He really wore his heart on his sleeve.
Ryuunosuke stared at the scar on his neck. An imperfection on his smooth pale skin. He hated that he was the cause of it. He hated the way it got on there. He knew Atsushi was thinking the same thing as he let out a soft hum before speaking.
“You’re staring at it again,” Atsushi stated simply.
“And you’re thinking of our encounter with him.” Ryuunosuke countered as Atsushi froze a bit. Atsushi opened his eyes with a sigh as he stared at the ceiling before looking at Ryuunosuke.
“Because I couldn’t save you,” Atsushi mumbled softly as he looked at the ravenette, small tears pickling in the corners of his eyes. “And for the life of me, I still can’t figure it out.”
“Figure out what?” Ryuunosuke asked his thin eyebrow carefully raised.
“Why you did it,” Atsushi whispered as he sat up and looked at the other. “Why did you save me…? Why did you allow me to escape without you?” Atsushi asked as his lip slightly twitched in nervousness. Scared of the response he would get.
“I-“ Ryuunoske started before Atsushi interrupted, blurting out in embarrassment.
“I understand if you did it because of Dazai-san’s approval but.. I-… well… I would have assumed you still would have tried to save yourself instead… Even if it hurts I understand if you-“ Atsushi blabbered on as he squeezed his own hands to keep them from fidgeting.
Another thing Ryuunosuke hated. He hated how Atsushi was so quick to doubt and so quick to come up with excuses to combat reality.
“Shut up for a second, Jinko.” Ryuunosuke interrupted and he harshly took Atsushi’s hands in his own in response which shut the younger one up immediately.
It was an odd feeling.
Atsushi’s hands were warm in Ryuunosuke’s cold ones. It felt odd for both of them. For Atsushi it felt almost like touching a corpse… and in some strange lapse of judgment… he found it comforting.
As for Ryuunosuke. It felt wrong to touch Atsushi. This wasn’t even in an intimate manner or even friendly but it felt weird, almost as if Atsushi’s skin burned him. In more ways than one.
“I didn’t save you because of Dazai-san,” Ryuunosuke said as he squeezed Atsushi’s hands. However, the younger one raised his eyebrow in confusion.
“I thought..”
“You thought wrong,” Ryuunosuke interrupted gruffly as he let out a sigh. “At first… I did so because of Dazai-san but now… it feels.. wrong to imagine you in my position. It makes my skin crawl to think of any sort of scar from that idiot. To see you be in harm's way.”
Atsushi simply stared at Ryuunosuke with a confused case as he opened his mouth to let out a sharp retort before he closed his mouth.
“What exactly are you saying?” Atsushi asked after a while before Ryuunosuke rolled his eyes in a frustrated manner, abandoning holding Atsushi’s hands to give Atsushi’s tie a slight tug causing the other to yelp softly in surprise.
“I was wrong, there is less than a cobweb and a marble in that brain of yours,” Ryuunosuke mumbled as he pulled Atsushi slightly closer to him, a firm grip on his tie. Atsushi narrowed his eyes on Ryuunosuke as he scoffed slightly.
“Then explain it to me since I’m too dense to understand.” The weretiger said in an exasperated sigh before Ryuunosuke rolled his eyes.
“I saved you because I… care about you, brat.” The ravenette hissed out as he took in the shocked look on the weretiger’s face. His ombre eyes widened in a comical fashion.
“I…”
“And I couldn’t allow Fukuchi to snuff out your life in such an unfavorable manner and should anyone else try to break you down or hurt you in such an unfavorable way I won’t allow it.” Ryuunosuke blurted out as he tightened his grip on Atsushi’s tie, pulling him closer so their noses slightly brushed against each other, taking note of Atsushi’s flushed cheeks. “Not because it’s because of what Dazai-san dictates or wants… but because I need you here still.”
Atsushi stayed silent as he let out a soft chuckle, his eyes slightly flickering in a bit of amusement before a careful eyebrow was raised.
“I take it that means you aren’t going to fight me in six months’ time?” Atsushi had the balls to tease before Ryuunoske scoffed in an annoyed manner before carefully crashing their lips together causing the younger by surprise.
Atsushi didn’t even think or care to pull away. Instead moving to wrap his arms around Akutagawa’s shoulders to keep himself steady as their lips pressed together. It was odd, despite his weird feelings toward the mafioso, that Atsushi felt comforted by the fact that his first kiss was shared with Akutagawa, of all people. The only thing swelling in his chest was an embarrassing amount of butterflies that he wanted to suppress but instead made his cheeks grow warmer as he kissed Ryuunosuke. His eyes slightly drifted closed as he felt a careful hand cup his cheek and slightly stroke it in response.
As for Ryuunosuke, this also felt a bit odd. This was his enemy. So why on earth was he holding him in such an intimate position and keeping their lips pressed together? And why on earth was Atsushi just… letting it happen? Ryuunosuke let out a slight huff in response against Atsushi’s lips before he slightly pulled away.
“Of course, I’m going to fight you in six months. Don’t be an idiot.” Ryuunosuke replied in an annoyed manner as Atsushi let out a flustered chuckle before cocking his head to the side.
“Does that mean I can report you for abuse?” Atsushi replied snippily as Ryuunosuke rolled his eyes again and crashed their lips together in a much harsher manner as he pushed the weretiger against the couch with a huff.
“God I hate you so much, weretiger,” Ryuunosuke mumbled against Atsushi’s lips as the other let out a muffled laugh against his lips.
“I can tell.” The brat teased back, slightly gripping the back of his coat. Ryuunosuke slightly pulled back and saw the expression on Atsushi’s face, his slightly dazed smile as he looked up at the mafioso with an expression that should never be directed at someone like him.
Ryuunosuke let out a sigh as he placed a soft kiss on the side of Atsushi’s mouth, causing the other to let out another chuckle of surprise. “I can never rationalize when it comes to you.” He mumbled against Atsushi’s soft skin. It felt almost like lace, soft and gentle.
“Is that a bad thing?” Atsushi asked softly as his eyes peered up into Ryuunosuke’s darker eyes that softened as he placed a kiss on Atsushi’s jaw before placing one on his neck.
“Yes,” Ryuunosuke said in an annoyed manner. “I hate that you’re taking over my life like this. I loathe your entire existence.”
Atsushi let out another hum as he let his eyes slightly flutter closed, his white eyelashes slightly getting caught together. Ryuunosuke let out another sigh.
“It’s not fair.”
“What’s not?”
“You.” Ryuunosuke admitted as Atsushi’s eyes opened again, his eyes growing concerned as Ryuunosuke brushed back his uneven and dumb bangs. The weretiger’s eyebrow slightly raised in confusion as Ryuunosuke shook his head, carefully tucking the longer bang behind his ear. It was too large of a chunk though, so a lot of the silvery strands still fell out of place.
“How am I not fair?” Atsushi asked growing a bit defensive before he sucked in a breath. “If you go on about Dazai-san I will kick you out-”
“It’s not just about him.” Ryuunosuke rolled his eyes as he looked into Atsushi’s softening eyes. “I hate how jealous I am of you and your relationship with him yes but… I hate that I’m jealous of the little things that you do. I hate how I try to scrutinize you with my eyes but instead, they just end up… finding things that I… tolerate about you.”
“What do you tolerate about me?” Atsushi asked with a curious gaze as he gently pushed a bit of Ryuunosuke’s hair out of his face.
“Your sharp and foulmouthed tongue still allows you to bring people up rather than cut them down. Your confidence when you forget about your past and upbringing. The way that you’re still determined to help and save people… no matter who it is. Your soft, lacelike skin that doesn’t feel like a corpse nor is stained with blood…. Everything.” Ryuunosuke breathed out as he looked down at Atsushi’s flushed cheeks, his eyes growing wide again as he let out a soft breath.
“I…”
“I hate how you poison me. Your actions feel like poison because they seem to… genuine to be real.” Ryuunosuke sighed as he rested his forehead against Atsushi’s, closing his eyes as he spoke.
“And I hate that scar on your neck,” Ryuunosuke concluded.
“Akutagawa, that’s rude, you’re the one who put it there,” Atsushi said with a growl as he looked away,
“I hate it because I put it there. I hate it because you weren’t able to heal it and I for the life of me cannot figure out why.” Ryuunosuke sighed as he opened his eyes again, slightly pulling back from the younger, watching the conflict behind Atsushi’s eyes.
“Neither can I.” Atsushi breathed out as he looked at Akutagawa.
“I don’t hate it because it’s an imperfection. I hate it because it doesn’t deserve to be on your skin… It doesn’t disrupt your lacy skin… but I despise how it got there.”
“I can say the same for yours,” Atsushi said softly as he brushed gentle fingers against the long and clean scar on Ryuunosuke’s throat. In a moment of hesitance, he carefully leaned up from the couch and placed a soft kiss on the scar causing Ryuunosuke to jolt in surprise.
“Sorry,” Atsushi said as he pulled back before Ryuunosuke shook his head.
“No, It’s fine… you caught me off guard.”
“A first?” Atsushi teased with a grin as Ryuunosuke rolled his eyes once more.
“Hush, brat.”
Atsushi let out another laugh as he slightly leaned his head back against the couch. Ryuunoskue watched the younger, wanting to find something he hated or found unappealing about the weretiger at that moment. Instead, he found nothing. He was staring at the boy as he felt his cheeks grow a bit warm and his eyes slightly softening. God, he was divine. God forbid he admitted it out loud though. The weretiger would never let him live those words down.
He just had… so much life to him. In every subtle movement. The twitch of his mouth as his rosy lips spread into a smile. His eyes crinkled in delight as they seemed to shine so brightly, even without his beastly ability. The way his hair bounced despite his poorly cut bangs, the white shade of his hair looked brighter and reminded him of a cloud. His nose slightly scrunched up whenever he was displeased with something or simply whenever his face scrunched up reminded him of a cat. Atsushi just was completely full of life. It was odd for Ryuunosuke to know and to see. Everybody he knew always had something devoid of life that would stop them from appearing like this.
Sure, Chuuya-san’s blue eyes crinkled in delight at times and he had a confident smirk that displayed on his face whenever he was pleased with the work Akutagawa did but… there was always that sense of underlying sorrow. The sorrow of his loss in the Port Mafia with the death of his many friends and the betrayal. Gin’s smile was pretty and often as carefree as it could be but was often hidden as a result of her position in the port mafia. There was also a hesitance to it. Tachihara-kun’s eyes held a sort of mystery before they were taken, but they never conveyed his true emotions… usually at least. Not to even discuss the lack of humanity and false warmth in Dazai-san’s eyes whenever he was facing him which simply got replaced whenever he looked at the uptight blonde or Atsushi himself.
They were all different though. None of them compared to Atsushi, especially considering the fact that the boy was so full of energy despite all that he had gone through. Obviously, there were times when it faltered and his pleasant expressions were replaced with anger, annoyance, sadness, or guilt but… it just made him feel more real the way that he wore all his emotions to the fullest.
“Akutagawa.” Atsushi interrupted as Ryuunosuke snapped out of his thought process to look down at the weretiger.
“What?”
“You’re staring,” Atsushi said simply as he carefully propped himself up on his elbows, a lopsided grin forming on his face. “And as much as I’d like to continue kissing you… Kyouka-chan will be home any minute and I think it’ll be better if she doesn’t catch us like this.”
Ryuunosuke sighed as he obliged, carefully pushing himself off of Atsushi as they both rose from the couch, Atsushi walked the older to the door as the ravenette stepped out of the dormitory to look at Atsushi.
“Hey, Akutagawa?” Atsushi asked as the latter hummed in response. “What are we?”
“The same as what we’ve always been,” Ryuunosuke stated with an eye-roll as Atsushi crossed his arms with a raised eyebrow.
“I don’t think enemies make out with each other on the said enemy couch.” The weretiger stated bluntly as he narrowed his eyes at the other. Ryuunosuke sighed in response before responding.
“I guess you have a point.”
“Then…?”
“Consider us the opposite of enemies if it pleases you,” Ryuunosuke stated with a cough as he turned to leave. Stopping when Atsushi grabbed his coat lapel and crashed their lips together. Ryuunosuke was slightly caught off guard but he carefully kissed Atsushi back, allowing his eyes to flutter closed for a second before pulling away.
“So does that mean we’re the best of friends?” Atsushi teased as Ryuunosuke rolled his eyes.
“I think I prefer enemies if you’re going to state it in that grotesque manner,” Ryuunosuke responded snippily with a slight purse of his lips causing Atsushi to let out another laugh.
“Glad to hear so, I guess,” Atsushi said with a lopsided grin as Ryuunosuke allowed a small and faint smile to play on his lips.
What was Nakajima to him?
A foe? A trial? A begrudging partner? His replacement? A sin?
A divine? (Perhaps not that one.)
A brat? (Perhaps that one.)
He wasn’t completely sure. However, Ryuunosuke could say that it was simply complicated.

@olivepdf made a gorgeous little bingo card for joe and nicky bc we lost the sun/moon bracket this fandom needed some good mobilizing in these trying times (no new set photos or announcements) so i sat myself down n made a little thing for it.
for ‘meant to find each other’
“Why do you always come back to me?”
Joe hasn’t even looked from scrubbing at a spot on his counter, but he senses Nicky freeze. He adds hastily, “Not that I mind. Just, I’m sure Andy or Nile would love to see you. Booker maybe not so much, you did traumatize him that one time.”
“Well he shouldn’t have fought me,” Nicky says. Joe smiles.
Something heavy gets set gently on the floor and a chair at the kitchen table scrapes over the tile. Nicky always lets out a quiet, involuntary sigh when he sits, as if he hasn’t been able to for a very long time. Joe wonders if he knows that about himself.
“You’re easier to find, for one,” Nicky finally answers, once Joe’s nearly forgotten his initial question, content to enjoy Nicky’s silent presence. Joe gives up on cleaning away what must just be a discoloration of his countertop and turns to look at his guest.
Nicky always goes transparent in the moonlight. The beams from the window are cut up by Joe’s curtains and one side of Nicky’s face and his entire right arm is nearly invisible. The rest of him is solid enough that Joe wants to reach out and touch him. Which he knows better than to do.
“Well that’s a little disheartening,” he says, tamping down his worst, most self-destructive impulse. Nicky smiles.
“Yes, you really should get better at hiding from the non-human entities that visit you from beyond the veil,” he says. Joe laughs. Nicky leans toward him ever so slightly, unnoticeable except for the way his face has suddenly lost just a little more definition.
“I’ll work on that,” Joe says.
“Not that you would be able to hide from me,” Nicky says, in a tone that Joe thinks might be trying toward smug, though it doesn’t quite reach.
“That’s what you th—” Joe barely starts before Nicky cuts in.
“You’re like a beacon. Like the sun, if I’m imagining it correctly, brighter and warmer the closer I get.” Joe braces both hands on the counter behind him just to keep from reaching for Nicky. Nicky turns his head a little, cutting off that much more of himself.
“You’re imagining it correctly,” Joe says after a minute. His voice has gone soft without conscious thought and he clears his throat a little. “Is that true of all the souls that come back?”
Nicky looks at him again and cocks his head to the side, bringing more of his face back into the shadows for Joe to see it. There’s genuine confusion in his expression, likely because he did technically answer this question already, but also something fond and amused and affectionate.
“Funnily enough, I haven’t really got much data on that front,” he says. Joe scoffs and turns away to pick up the counter sponge and rinse it properly, hiding his smile at Nicky’s tease. “Most of the souls I touch tend to, you know, stay dead. Otherwise I’d be really bad at my job.” Joe shakes his head.
“Ha ha,” he says, deadpan. He’s still smiling. “So why do you think I get the special reaper-summoning powers?”
“I don’t know,” Nicky says. His voice ticks up half a pitch. Joe’s heart ticks up half a beat. He puts the sponge away and turns back.
Nicky’s hiding in the moonlight and Joe wants to drag his chair back from the table so he can see his face. Whatever expression he has that’s making him hide. How many more centuries will he live wishing to reach for the thing that could kill him.
“Nicky.”
He sees the shape of Nicky’s head turn, though, moments before the name passes his lips. The one hand he can see tightens into a fist on Nicky’s thigh. Joe wants to tell him not to go. Badly.
“I have to—” Nicky starts.
“What’s the other thing?” Joe interrupts, taking a step toward him
“The other?” Nicky asks, staying in his seat though the edges of his form are starting to blur.
“You said ‘for one,’” Joe says desperately. “What's the other thing?”
Nicky bends down to lift his scythe and for a moment his entire body is visible. For a moment, Joe can see the resigned sadness on Nicky’s face.
“Stay out of trouble, Joe,” he says. Like he does every time. Since the first, last, only time he whispered, I cannot keep coming for your soul.
It’s always the last thing he says, always the last word because he’s just a bastard like that, and he’s gone before he’s even finished standing. Joe stares at the empty chair, blinking through sudden tears, imagining that he can still see the faint outline of Nicky’s moonlit form.
There’s never enough time. For two immortal beings, they never have enough time. Joe wonders what’s worse. Seeing the wretched look on Nicky’s face when he has to collect Joe’s soul for however long his death lasts. Or feeling the wretched pull of his own heart every time he has to watch Nicky disappear.
Walking over to push the chair back into its place at the table, Joe takes a steadying breath and consoles himself the same way he always does. Always has for centuries. Nicky will be back. At the very least, Nicky will be back.
After all, Joe's very easy to find.

I've seen you mention you have steter drafts a few times--are those still on your radar?
first, blessings upon you for asking, anon.
second, they are not not on my radar. my writing brain decided to take most of 2023 off and I'm trying to coax it back to life with some old drafts of things, the various steter projects included (there are five of them, in various states of WIP).
I am a chronic out-of-order writer, so they all have some degree of notes to turn into actual scenes, dialogue to turn into actual scenes, plotholes to spackle, etc, some much more than others. but I still very much like all of them and have no intention of abandoning them. hell, I think they all have bits that I'm proud of.
so I can't promise when you (or anybody) is gonna get to read them, anon, but I will say that knowing somebody wants to is the greatest encouragement a writer could ask for.

Patience is a Virtue
Rating: Explicit - No Archive Warnings
Fandom: Hatchetfield Universe - Team Starkid
Relationship: Ted Spankoffski/Bill Woodward
Summary:
Ted cocked his head to the side, a teasingly innocent look on his face, “So? What?” “So,” Bill started, attempting to ignore his mocking. God, that man knew how to rile him up, “you need to stop.” “And if I don’t?” “Ted, if you don’t stop–” “What? What’ll happen?” Ted smirked, crossing his arms in front of his chest. Bill sighed sharply out of his nose, trying to keep his cool. Trying to ignore that heat inside him was pooling into one area in particular. “I’m gonna…” he searched for the words. God, he knew what he wanted to do. But was Ted in the mood? “Do something to you.” That only made Ted roll his eyes and smile wider, his sly grin only fueling the burn inside Bill. “Oh yeah, Bill? What’re you gonna do?” He taunted him, got right in his face. There, Bill got his answer.
yeah this is smut based on “I’m gonna…. do something to you!” – “Oh, yeah, Bill? What’re you gonna do? ;)))"

Shameless Self-Promotion Time in honor of Trigun Fanfiction Appreciation Week (@trigunfanfic)!
As it happens, I have exactly seven Trigun fanfics, and while I don't intend to promote them all in chronological order, today is a day of beginnings, so we will start off with the first one I wrote.
Wishing on Shooting Stars
Words: 1,682
Status: Complete
Rating: Teen
Relevant Tags/Warnings*: Vash the Stampede, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, Meryl Stryfe, Milly Thompson, Ambiguous Relationships, Fluff and Angst (but mostly fluff), Wolfwood and Vash Suck at Emotions (platonic), Slice of Life, Canon Compliant ('98/manga, though if you allow for Milly instead of Roberto there's nothing keeping it from being Stampede)
Summary: As the gang settles down for the night, they notice a meteor shower, but Vash has very different associations with shooting stars than the rest of them.
Once a year, I try to write a handful of short stories based on a prompt list, and when I got to the prompt "star," my first thought was the scene in the manga with Millions Knives celebrating as the debris from the fleet rains down around him during the Great Fall. I got to thinking how deeply that must have affected Vash, how something so beautiful and wondrous would likely have completely different connotations for him, and I wanted to explore that.
So I did. And I brought his friends along for the ride.
One of the things I still really enjoy about this story is the third-person limited perspective focusing on Vash. Since he spends a chunk of the story pretending to be asleep, a decent chunk of it is told through what he hears rather than what he sees, and how his own thoughts and memories interweave with those sounds.
I love the interplay between the characters here. I tried to capture their unique voices and tones despite how little action takes place in the scene.
I hope you will love this story, too.
*We all know some AO3 tags are added for fun/shits and giggles, so I'm just listing some of the basic ones that might be of use to people when deciding whether or not this is for them.

(Part 44)
Me, to myself: I just think the series was better when I posted several times a week because the pacing felt more natural, and it translates better when people binge it.
Also Me, holding two jobs and a bat: If you try to post once a day again, I will disconnect your head from your shoulders—
@bruciemilf guess who’s back
Anyways, folks! :D So I'm thinking of a new upload schedule where I spend a bit preparing the next ten or so parts then post it all in two weeks? I think that would be fun (and much better for my creative process.)
I’ll be posting the next part very soon :) But it's going to be drastically different from what I've done before. Let’s see if anyone can guess why.
Yada yada don’t die LOVE Y’ALL

It's weird sometimes to look back at around this time in 2011, and writing crackfic with Loki and Darcy bonding over being adopted and him just like showing up in her apartment unannounced and the two of them watching How To Train Your Dragon. because, you know--crack.
There's an epic fuckton of me rambling about STUFF behind the Read More, about Thor, about Loki, and about the process of writing Simple, Not Easy and the delight of seeing where the characters have ended up in canon in the 10+ years since.
When I started writing Simple, Not Easy, all I had to build on was the Thor movie and the Avengers trailer and the comics. okay and the encouragement of folks on livejournal particularly from the Darcy community and the kinkmeme folks actually.
So yeah, my Loki killed people and was scary as fuck. But he also did things like bring the statues of Alice in Wonderland in Central Park to life to fight the Avengers just for the lolz.
But what's been interesting is seeing the Darcy and Loki that I saw in my head and whose speech patterns I had mimiced and wrote insane and silly and heartbreaking and stubbornly genuine appear in these little flashes in WandaVision and Loki.
They're just these little moments where I'm like you know what, I did a half-decent job, building off of not a heck of a lot, but still somehow being true to their voices.
that doesn't happen all the time. in fact it's pretty fucking rare to see the characters 10+ years later and still recognise them.
But that's part of why Thor is my favourite MCU movie. Because all of the characters really strongly drawn with unique voices, and excellent storytelling where you knew who these people were from the first second they showed up on screen.
Like, specifically look at Jane Foster who is like 'look at him he'll be fine. you go take him to the hospital, I'll stay here and SCIENCE'. I mean we're not even getting into the part where you do not go out into the middle of the desert in New Mexico and drop somebody off in the middle of the night and then come back for them later because coyotes and coyotes and also other things but mostly coyotes.
But the biggest thing I love about the movie is that it's about ego death. It is only when Thor loses everything that he begins to genuinely change. And it's not because of Jane, or even midgard itself. It's because when Loki tells him that their father is dead and Frigga will not end his banishment, Thor accepts responsibility for his actions and it sets in that he has lost everything and that he deserved it for breaking the hardwon peace with Laufey because he has grown up on epic tales of his father's prowess as a warrior and completely missed what Odin was actually trying to teach him about the horrors of war.
The humility that he displays, the empathy, is completely new. Because the guy who was banished to Earth was banished for a very good reason--he was a complete douche canoe. Total spoiled dick and he wasn't ready to be king. He really wasn't, and the way Loki went about trying to prove that was the worst possible way he could have and everything rapidly spiraled out of his control until it became something too big and it began controlling him instead of him controlling it.
But at the same time you have Loki also going through a form of ego death because he finds out that not only is he not who he thought he was he's not what he thought he was. He's not even a person, according to the way that the æsir view jötnar. and you know that internalised self-hatred is on its own pretty dangerous but when you weaponise it and decide to commit genocide then yes it's absolutely right for your father to be like WHAT THE FUCK because he saw everything. I don't think Loki really processed the fact that his dad saw absolutely everything he had done up to an including Thor's death at the hands of the Destroyer and it was only by accepting that he had treated his brother pretty much like shit and bore some responsibility for what was going on and then sacrificing himself for others that made Thor worthy.
And that's what the series is giving Loki the chance to discover: what it's like to act selflessly. He genuinely puts Sylvie's well-being above his own. He acknowledged the importance of the lives of all of the people in the TVA and his responsibility to them because of the results of his actions.
He's owning his shit. He's doing the work.
And as someone who spent a huge chunk of autumn 2011 writing Loki coming to a place where he was able to actually own his shit, and accept responsibility for his actions and even entertain the idea of change, it's really cool seeing that even though I took a vastly different road to get there, I was on the right track.
(and okay yeah like at least 50% of the story is also about Darcy and Clint figuring their shit out and then start banging like a screen door in a hurricane which obviously is not the way the movies went. But again I was working off of the 2 minutes of Clint Barton that's in Thor. To be fair, there's more character development for Clint Barton in those two minutes in Thor than there was in the entirety of the Avengers. and the only thing that actually redeemed bringing in the storyline from Ultimates to bring in his family just to fridge them was the way the Hawkeye series made them into real people instead of your average superhero tragic backstory.)
anyway I know that the current generation of Loki fans almost certainly have never heard of Simple, Not Easy and they sure as hell haven't read it and why would they? It's not cool or sexy or even particularly violent. It's ridiculous and cracky and has Loki shape shifting into a baby sloth and falling asleep while hugging a bottle of Goldschläger like a teddy bear.
But I had a moment, after the drunken singing on the train, where I thought yep. That's my Loki.
This moments are precious and rare and really freaking cool when they do come along.

The stress was beginning to seep in. Your eyebags becoming more visible by the day. No one could tell you were more tired than the past week.
You were more quiet and less aggressive in your talking. You seem to have lost your spirit in a way, but of course, the man in the mask figured it out.
Ghost eyed you on the other side of the room. You were bobbing your head, nearly falling asleep before being shaken awake by the slight fall of your body.
You were being distracted by the lights and paid no mind to Ghost's wandering eyes.
It wasn't until around 2100 (9:00pm) when he knocked at your door. You weren't asleep yet. Your light was still on.
Opening the door you asked, "Is something wrong?"
You hadn't changed out of uniform and still seemed out of it.
"Why aren't you asleep?"
"Why are you awake?"
You snapped back at him. You weren't in the mood. You've been tolerable all day, no arguments or fights, but it's clear he came to ruin that.
He stared at you in silence. The mask made him more intimidating which caused you to fess up.
You ran your hands through you hair, frowning in disgust at the knots in your hair.
"Just some family problems is all."
"Losing sleep over your family?"
You sighed, "What do you need?"
"Need you to sleep so we could complete this mission."
"I'm not broken, I can still do the mission."
Silence permeated the hall, other than the occasional fizzle from that one light the base swears isn't broken or haunted.
"Can I come in?"
The door widened a foot further, allowing the masked man inside. You didn't understand why you would let him in. You don't let anyone in your room, at least, not for silly matters like this.
He followed you further into your room after shutting the door, and settled on the side of your bed. You didn't have time to question it before you fell.
Collapsing on the spot, Ghost caught you before the ground could do actual damage to your body.
I guess the sleep had caught up to you, just as Ghost had caught you.
Sleep truly is not for the weak. Stay healthy, guys.

@raedear had some thoughts abt dark!joe this morn and i havent written something for the boys in a hot minute so yk. friendship r whatever.
no graphic violence but warning for blood mention. under cut:
Nicolò doesn’t realize until he kisses Yusuf.
When he was a boy, he used to sit at his window and stare at the moon. Unable to sleep throughout his childhood (well into his adulthood, as well, though he masks it far better now), he watched the moon rise and hang there in the sky as if from a rope, then slowly descend should exhaustion not claim him before the day claimed her. His mother, seeing him still awake far later than he should be, always said he would go moon-blind. With the darkness of the night sky as his background, the only point of true light being the curve of the moon’s hanged head, one day, she said, the rest of the world might go just as dark around him. Nicolò doesn’t think she meant the smoke.
Nor does he think she meant he would still have a moon to trail behind in his arc across the Earth.
Moments ago, Nicolò called him that. His moon. The light that rises during his darkest moments, but never sets. Always present, always bright. Yusuf rather likes the comparison. The moon is lovely. Perhaps he’ll repeat the words back to Nicolò some day, perhaps it will seem an act of devotion to echo him. Yusuf will remember.
Never has Nicolò put much mind to what the moon might be like where he to reach out and touch, but it happens that he is cold. Not to the tips of the fingers Nicolò has lighted on his jaw, no, his skin is warm. But there is a chill in the dark eyes that watch him as he draws back, one that he should have perhaps seen before. Despite having kissed him less than a breath ago, there is suddenly before Nicolò a pane of smooth glass. A mirror.
“Nicolò,” Yusuf sighs, not unlike the sound Nicolò made himself when their lips finally brushed, before he kissed Yusuf with true abandon. But this close, Nicolò can only see his eyes. And they remain cold.
The moon never warmed him like the light of the sun, still Nicolò kept him like a lover.
“Do you want me?” he asks Yusuf. There is a spark there, life where there was nothing in the blink of an eye. This close, Nicolò can feel the twitch of Yusuf’s hand. He knows which side he carries his dagger, has seen him draw it often enough.
“Of course,” Yusuf says. His voice, too, is different. There is no repetition here, the surface of the mirror splintering with true desire. The thing on the other side pressing through to reach out.
“How?” Nicolò asks. Yusuf’s fingers are familiar on Nicolò’s jaw for the fact that they fall exactly where Nicolò’s still linger on Yusuf’s. Nicolò wonders that he’s never noticed before. His touch always returned in replicate, a false confidence of imitation lacking all the humanity of sweet uncertainty.
“However I can have you,” Yusuf says.
Someone said that to Yusuf once. Not Nicolò, but someone else. Yusuf did not need to pretend to see the romance of those words, though his partner then cannot have known truly what he was asking. Yusuf could not have known truly what he wanted. But regardless, blind devotion always sets in the ear like beauty holds in the eye. To never be undone once one decides to appreciate it. Nicolò might appreciate this.
“And how would you have me?” Nicolò whispers. Another spark. Yusuf is light as he watches Nicolò back.
“I would carve you open to bury myself within,” Yusuf whispers. Nicolò breath catches on his throat.
Yusuf has done it before. And before. And before. And was that the moment Nicolò went blind? To see the blazing bright of him set against the darkness of the day as Yusuf blistered warmth up from Nicolò skin in every split of his blade. Comparing to the moment of their lips meeting, Nicolò would call forth that life of him to keep away the chill emptiness he saw at his kiss.
“Where?”
Pale as he is, Yusuf once told Nicolò he could see the blood rushing just below the surface. The travel of it in his veins. He knows where to cut to bring it welling to the surface, fast and flowing and free of its prison under the skin. He is hungry. And Nicolò, maybe, is asking what Yusuf has always wanted to answer.
When Yusuf draws his dagger, Nicolò doesn’t flinch away. It gleams in the night, a sharp shiver of reflection, though Nicolò cannot say exactly which light it’s catching. His fingers do not tremble on the ties of his clothing. Yusuf’s do.
His eyes are pools of darkness and the night is cold around them. On the night of no moon, he still bends over Nicolò as he falls to his back. Blinded, Nicolò closes his eyes.
