How is this real

it's a fun hc of mine that during dick's robin days, he went through the "omg i wish i had a cool secret language so i can have secret conversations with my friends" phase all kids go through. but one of his closest friends at the time also happened to be the batman, a guy with possibly the most bizarrely diverse arsenal of skills in the world. bruce sees the merit in the entire idea of a coded language to communicate rudimentary information when they can hear but not see each other. so why not make a code built on bird vocalizations? it's pretty much incomprehensible to anyone without a trained ear or comprehensive knowledge of birding and impossible to even passably mimic without proper training, so while the chances of interception are high, the chances of someone understanding it enough to interrupt during the middle of a bird-convo and feed false information are not.

it also, batman and robin come to realize, feed into the "holy fuck our vigilantes are cryptids" idea. bird sounds that come from seemingly no determinable location (ventriloquism) come to mean batman and robin are nearby. to the goons of gotham, bird song becomes inextricably connected to getting your ass kicked by the dynamic duo. the real reason why criminals don't operate during the day is because they get skittish and jumpy about if the sounds of birds chirping are real birds or some masked vigilantes lying in wait to rock your shit, and it's just easier to commit crimes during the night when all the birds are asleep so you know for sure.

ornithologists have boards on their bedrooms dedicated to the bird-bats of gotham. they've written dissertations.

the bird language becomes a bit of a batfamily bonding connection. teaching each other how to do different clicks and whistles, making up slang so bruce and barbara can't complain of clogging up comms with non-mission relevant talk, searching up birds to associate them with different people, psychologically terrorizing the criminal populace of gotham by chirping at them...

how the bird code works is that there's a bird assigned to each one of gotham's major heavy hitter criminals and vigilantes, and a few assigned to heroes out of the city (by which i mean the ones the bats associate with often enough to have a sign to address by). the only birds i've got so far are the robin (for robin. self-explanatory) and the glistening-green tanager (for the joker). i only have one for the joker bc i wanted to reference this hc in one of my fics and so searched up green birds to find the most eye-searingly annoying-to-look-at green bird i could find, and the glistening-green tanager was the closest one to fit the bill.

Are they friends? Enemies? Do they even recognise each other as birds?

Two new MLP OCs! I’m trying to get back into the habit of following daily drawing prompts (I’m over on Sketch A Day) and these two were for “chirp” and “song,” respectively.

Robin Chirp (she/they) works as a tap dancer. She adores music and is often displays her talents at parties, though she is humble and rather innocent. She is constantly fixing her floating bow tie with her wings.

Songbird Soirée (he/him) is an event organizer for musical ensembles. He is stubborn and technical, but always stands up for his daughter, Robin Chirp. Yes he is wearing pants and glasses. Most ponies assume he is an ignorant prick.

Tim: "Man I'm really conflicted on Bernard getting possessed by Dionysus a couple times every week now."

Annie (Hagen): "Yeah, sharing a body with Matt is hard sometimes but a God is such a huge difference in scale. I don't blame you for being scared of him."

Tim: "Oh I'm not scared of him, I'm just worried how me being Jewish might affect this. Like if I date a Greek God is that sacrilegious?"

Annie: "THAT'S what you're worried about???"

Tim: "How could I not be? Bernard's soul is tied to him! When I die am I gonna have to go to the Greek God afterlife or the Jewish one?"

Annie: "Can't you just ASK him?"

Tim: "Think I can get a Persephone deal?"

Annie: "TIM!"

disney princess steve harrington except it's set in regular old hawkins and robin somehow got turned into a Robin so he's just chanting "boobies" at this bird that keeps pecking him

You know what I want to see more of in fics?

People completely misunderstanding Tim’s thought process and personality.

Oftentimes in the comics he’s either a) completely oblivious to how his actions come across to others because his social awareness is nil, or b) he becomes aware of someone’s impression (usually by them loudly accusing him of it) but doesn’t argue the point because it’d either be too much of a hassle to dissuade them, or any attempt to explain would lead to more questions he doesn’t want them to ask. Questions whose answers are too close to Robin. Tim cares way more about protecting Robin and Bruce’s secrets than he does his own reputation.

robin williams is my inspiration for my whole entire future plans and career, he is my favorite and i look up to him with all the utmost adoration i can <3

I appreciate it! <3 I made the ghost!robins theme specifically for the zine, so I haven’t had the time to really build it up yet, but it’s essentially the concept of the robins if batman Didn’t Get There in Time, so now before passing on, they’ve latched themselves to the gotham vigilante in hopes that he can solve their respective cases.

I also find a bunch of kids poltergeisting wayne manor to goad the batman into helping them very funny. not to mention the sense of commitment bruce would have toward bringing them closure, since he never really got that after his parents’ deaths. so batman DOES end up having robins in this universe, but rather than working with him in the traditional sense, they would probably specialize in recon/information gathering, general spying activities, and tampering with whatever they feel will make the mission go faster so that batman can go back to solving THEIR case instead of whatever the riddler has going on any given day.

plot-wise, I haven’t really settled on the robins’ causes of death, but probably in the ballpark of: dick’s failed confrontation with zucco, jason’s confrontation with joker (for catherine, because of her apparent death, or for sheila, for blackmailing her…unsure. comics are complicated), tim being caught in the crossfire of a battle while trying to get evidence of batman, and steph most likely as a result of cluemaster. there are little hints to those in the newspaper headlines in the drawing!

Alfred and Babs/Oracle are also alive in this au! no huge changes for them, although I do think babs would be absolutely exasperated at being asked to modify some of her tech to detect paranormal activity (what is bruce thinking??) before realizing that. oh. no yeah there are Ghosts Here. I thought you finally lost it my bad

alfred is just. he’s seen enough. I doubt he’d believe bruce’s suspicions at first but he spends enough time around the manor to notice when his cleaning supplies keep scooting away from him every time he reaches for them. he can’t see them so he just kind of has to scold the air to stop messing around.

so yeah that’s kind of all I have for now? this au has really been growing on me and I’d love to make more for it in the future! thanks again for asking, and I’m glad you liked my art! :D

I start tomorrow morning. 28ish hours a week, grocery stocking, $16/hr. About five months of 20-30 daily applications, and I finally got something. It caaaan be done. Aaahhhh!

honestly haven't been all that active anywhere lately! irl stuff and also interests largely shifting from fandom to more oc-oriented things.

got a job! lost said job! got in a really fuckin' rad dnd campaign that occupies my every waking thought nowadays, lovingly tending to my pc and the party she's a part of (art to come soon here, probably! i've got a lot of it!)

that said, i'm also coming back on here later today/tomorrow to post other art i've done in my absence, including commissions that have been completed (and if any are still interested here, they'll be open again about the same time!)
