my blorbo (to use the term) did do all the stuff you're accusing them of. if you ignore it you're mischaracterizing them. however they aren't a bad person and if you think that then you have a simplistic + incorrect understanding of the text and its themes. however they are an asshole. if you dont understand they're an asshole then you are ruining all the interesting textures and flattening the blorbo to a bland cookie cutter doll. you also must have a comprehensive blorbo-focused knowledge of the text and its setting and the context needed to fully understand why the blorbo did all these things. you must understand the difference between explanation and justification and the blurred line between them. NUANCE I WANT NUANCE but agree with me. or introduce different points of view nonconfrontationally. these are my proclamations as blorbo king

I've said this to a couple people already, but I'm actually really interested by Felix's crash alibi. The description of Lacrimosa tells us what he told to the police the morning after the crash:

And I'm assuming his story here is that he was driving drunk, got into a wreck, and after he came back to consciousness he spent the whole night and morning looking for Edd & Molly in the woods, and when he couldn't find them he went to the police. Which is actually a really strong alibi to explain his behavior and the huge gap of time where he was unaccounted for. Like, it's suspicious, but short of uncovering buried remains that the police don't know exist, there's really nothing that can disprove it. It's very difficult to say that isn't what happened.

Which I really like, because I think it lays the groundwork to explain why Felix has gotten away with so much for so long. A really common complaint I hear about The Walten Files is that people don't find it believable that all this could happen, all these missing people and mysterious circumstances, and seemingly no one in Brighton cared, and Felix was never indicted. But as I suspected, the series is already starting to put forward explanations that are believable and that can facilitate the future circumstances we've already gotten a taste of.

the thing is. ryne was not suicide ideating solely because thancred was a bad guardian to her. that was a mindset she had literally as long as she can remember, one that was beaten into her by ran'jit and vauthry telling her that she would be better off dead. thancred (due to his trauma + emotional constipation + daughter-based trolley problem) does not manage to heal this mindset in her by the time we meet them in 5.0 (to be frank this would be an uphill battle for most caretakers, even ones who don't have the significant enotional shortcomings thancred has), but what does allow her to stand up to ran'jit is the freedom thancred provided her. she isn't sure if she deserves to live, but she wants to live in the world that she has traveled in. she doesn't want to be put back in that cell. she doesn't know if she's perfect, if she's the "best" minfilia, but she wants to see the world and live as part of it, even if it's scary, even if she hates herself and thinks she's worthless. she wants to see the sky and the trees and to help the people she loves. certain parts of ryne's arc hit me really hard (as someone who was a suicide-ideating teenage girl, and is now... no longer a teenage girl) and this sort of... "incomplete" personal resolution works for me. she managed to scrape out the smallest handhold of wanting to live, but it's enough. it's enough to keep her from giving up on her life. the smallest handhold is enough to hold onto, always. that's the miracle. "to live is to suffer", to quote hydaelyn, but "wanting to see what tomorrow will bring," to quote gaia, is enough. the vast majority of people who attempt regret it, and are glad they failed/didn't go through. you don't need to be convinced your life has worth in order to keep living. this got off-track and a bit personal hahaha, but she's my daughtermelon and her story hits hard. im glad she's happy and thriving, and so is thancred (another person who hates themself and wants to die but refuses to do anything but survive), and so is ryne.

I accidentally stumbled upon this elderly gay man's website last night, it's been active since the 90s and has pages talking about his personal life as a gay cowboy it's super interesting! he has webcams running on it that refresh every minute or so and pages about his experiences with HIV and cancer - he also has a massive archive of gay magazine scans (18+) from the 70s up to the 90s! 

this stream has been an absolute treat!
