Say their name.
CW AND TW: CHILD DEATH
Say.
Tumblr media
Their.
Tumblr media
Name.
Tumblr media
Nex Benedict was a indigenous trans nonbinary teenager. Their head was beaten against the floor in a bathroom stall. Less than 24 hours later, they died, most likely from undiagnosed head trauma. Conservatives say they want to, "protect the children", where was the protection for Nex? That's the thing. There wasn't any. Nex died. And many more trans, queer, and nonbinary minors will if we don't step up and do something. What happened to Nex has and will happen to queer folk around the globe. Say their name.
Edit: I didn't expect this to get much attention, but thank you everyone. What alot of people, "forget" to mention was that Nex was two spirited, which means they were indigenous. The fact that I wouldn't have heard about this if I didn't have Tumblr is absolutely revolting. News needs to be covering this. But what are Republicans doing? Sucking their thumbs and crying about how, "trans people shouldn't be able to piss". What are Democrats doing? Twiddling their thumbs and groveling to an old geezer that somehow falls up the stairs and supports I$r3@l. It's disgusting and America needs to do better.
Edit 2: Any and all hate/saying that Nex Benedict wasn't murdered (they were) will immediately get deleted, just because you don't like trans people doesn't mean you can be an whiny little bitch. A child was murdered. This has nothing to do with politics, a child was murdered.

"'I grew up a queer teen on the fringes, and didn't feel like the world was made for me,' [New Jersey librarian Jenna] Ingham tells Yahoo Life. 'The goal is to be there for the teens, to make them feel seen, to make them feel valid.' Because, Ingham adds, "When you see yourself reflected back at you in the book, you feel like there is a place for you.'
"...'I had a teen tell me I was the only adult in their life that respects their pronouns,' Ingham shares. 'I recently had a trans teen come out to me. I had only just met them, but after 25 minutes of conversation they felt comfortable. I believe I was the first person they said it out loud to.'"

I’m sorry if this seems rude but since no one’s talking about it and your blog is one of the most popular I follow, I ask you please share this:
KOSA is an internet censorship bill that has a very high chance of being passed in the US Senate this Monday, February 26. This censorship bill will force people to upload their govt IDs to access the internet and tell parents everything their child is searching. Not only is this a horrifying invasion of privacy for everyone, but especially queer minors whose only safe spaces are online LGBTQ+ communities.
If you live in the US, call and email your senators. Here is a post with one-minute scripts to use. Go to badinternetbills.com where there are some resources, including a petition to sign against it. Even those who don’t live in the US will be impacted, as this bill will cause a global change.
This bill will do irreversible damage to the internet. Please do your part: call, email, sign, and don’t stop talking about KOSA!!
the advancement of kosa physically breaks my heart. please guys, this will kill children.

as a neurodivergent, disabled and LGBT teen, the internet means so much to me and has taught me so much, it has also lead me to meet some amazing individuals who i'm so glad are in my life to this very day. without the internet, i would not know who i am or if i ever was going to exist in the first place. that is how much the internet means to me.
this bill, KOSA, will limit that. this bill will make it so i cannot get the valuable information i need and will not make me able to see my friends EVER again, this will also happen to many others if this bill does pass. this bill does more harm than any "good" it is trying to do. this bill will destroy the internet and many lives in its footsteps, this CANNOT happen.
there is still time to act and to push forward. 2 senators have spoken up about their concerns which is AMAZING, this means our voices DO matter and are getting heard. we can still do this. it may be hard, but pushing forward is our option. we can do this.
CALL YOUR SENATORS, CALL YOUR LAWMAKERS, AND IF YOU CANNOT CALL YOU EMAIL THEM. SPAM THEM SO THEY KNOW HOW UPSET YOU ARE. LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD AND KNOWN. STOP KOSA.

The murder of Nex Benedict makes me so grateful that my child's school, even in one of the most conservative areas of this state, is committed to protecting and supporting their students.
My child is non-binary and has their preferred pronouns and gender identity on official school records, including with the health office. They are allowed to use any bathroom they choose, regardless of how the bathroom is gendered. They were allowed to choose which locker room they use. At their band concert last night, students could wear any dress-code approved clothes they chose; a male-presenting student would have been allowed to wear a black skirt or dress. A few female-presenting students wore the black dress pants/white dress shirt/black vest and tie combo. My child feels as safe at school in their gender identity as they do in our home.
My student's school has been commended for their academic excellence, with their successesful programs being implemented elsewhere because of it. Their approach to supporting and protecting their Queer students should follow likewise be promoted. This is how you protect Queer kids. I hope Nex's school and the students responsible for this crime face the appropriate consequences

Hey, IT'S PRIDE MONTH.
The only month that ain't only for straight people to enjoy out of 11 others.
Yet yall are complaining about the pride flag being infront of the Whitehouse this month?
WHEN 11 OTHER MONTHS THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PRIDE FLAG THERE.
It's not against the law to support gay people. If it's really against the law to put the flag out front, then fuck America. IT'S RIDICULOUS THAT IT'S ILLEGAL TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.
Why does flag day have to be in pride month?
America has how many holidays where they flaunt the goddamn American flag?
Memorial day, veterans day, 4th of July, AND EVERYDAY OF THE GODDAMN YEAR.
Yet the one month where we display the pride flag, there has to be a 'holiday' in it for the American flag specifically?
'Yea, it's pride month, and yea, we made it illegal to display the pride flag because there's a holiday in pride month for the American flag. The American flag can NEVER be secondary to any other flag! And it's disgusting how the pride flag is displayed more than the American during a month that's about the pride flag, because we need every two damn seconds for the Land of the Opressed, Home of the Ongoing Queer Genocide!'
I refuse to accept 'Flag Day' as a legitimate holiday. It just exists to fuck over gay people during the only month we have to display our colours.
Oh golly jee! The American flag was made! Let us have ANOTHER American holiday to flaunt our diminishing human rights and dying democracy!
Yea, even the pride flag and other flags don't have a holiday to celebrate the damn flag being made. You guys just need to be important all the time, don't you? Nobody else at any other time!
'But, so many men died so we can display the American flag! There were many wars fought for our independence!'
Yea, 'men', totally. First correction, 'people'. So many people fought so we can 'have independence', that you are currently stripping away from us.
Do you think the American flag is the only flag that people died for?
So many people also died for the pride flag. We have been fighting for our rights for centuries. Yet we're not allowed to display a flag that our ancestors, our trans sisters, our lesbian queens in history, have fought relentlessly and given their lives for us to have? We're still fighting for that flag. CHILDREN have died, and are DYING for our pride flag; for our rights. Children that didn't even offer their lives, instead they were taken unlawfully. Yet, people who kill them are 'good Samaritans'.
After the hell we've been through, we can't have ANYTHING?
Yet, you can have everything?

KOSA is back on the floor again, people!
on the fourth of september, senators will decide whether or not they want to ruin the internet. you will be able to help make sure they don't.
call your senators and make sure their phones are ringing off the hook. if you need a script, there's one on badinternetbills.com i think. tell them you hate kosa, you dont support any of the bills that are trying to mess with the internet, and frankly, you think it will hurt lgbt kids.
how do you make sure they listen? why, i'm glad you asked! put their election on the line. tell them you wont vote for them. tell them that the people you know in their state wont vote for them. make sure they know that they rely on voting to have this power, and if they get voted out, its over.
this bill (and other bills on badinternetbills.com) have the potential to decimate all fandom/internet culture on this site and many others.
it has the potential to decimate the lgbtq community in rural areas.
please, help make sure it doesnt pass this time. it was brought up twice in recent years, and both times, people raised hell. so do it again.
thank you.
EDIT!:
the date of september fourth is INCORRECT! i was given crap information. however, i cannot find the actual date. if anyone knows what it is, please reblog this, add it in comments, whatever. thank you!

We left Twitter!
At It Gets Better, it's our goal to foster safe spaces for young LGBTQ+ people to meaningfully connect with communities of support both online and IRL.
Unfortunately, Twitter/X is no longer a space where we can safely and effectively do this work, so we are pausing all future content on the platform.
BUT, to the 187,000 folks who joined our movement on Twitter/X:
You can still find community at itgetsbetter.org and on all other social media platforms, like here on Tumblr, plus Twitch, TikTok, and IG @ItGetsBetter AND our new Spanish-language IG @itgetsbetterespanol!
Let’s keep queer joy front and center, together. 🏳️‍🌈💜🏳️‍⚧️
