I am gonna dig Bram Stoker up and smack him in the back of the head for forcing me to read (and re-read, and re-read, and give up on) this sentence with my own brain:
“That is much, my dear, ever were there that which I do not see.”

Potential Character for Mrs. Kelsey and Tumblr 5/31/2023:
Professor Abraham Van Helsing, Monster Hunter and Learned Man:
 What he’s from: “Dracula”.
Appearance: (See above).
Background:
A polymath of great skill, Professor Van Helsing became interested in fighting vampires when one of them killed his son.
He ultimately became involved in the events of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” when a former student of his, Dr. Seward, contacted him with regards to an ex-girlfriend of his, Lucy Westenra, who was suffering a strange disease. Van Helsing was able to tell the girl was suffering from the visitations of a vampire, and began trying to keep her from being claimed. Unfortunately, a servant stole the gold cross he urged Lucy to wear and Lucy’s mother cleared out the garlic he placed around the room and opened the window to let in fresh air.
Ultimately, Lucy died, and became a vampire. Van Helsing helped his allies (Dr. Seward, Lord Arthur Holmwood, and the cowboy Quincy Morris) bring Lucy peace. Afterwards, they began working against the vampire who Embraced Lucy, Count Dracula. Part of this involved Lucy’s friend, Mina Harker (the wife of solicitor Jonathon Harker, who Dracula had engaged in purchasing property in England), who Dracula had apparently developed a fascination with, and who had developed a telepathic link with him.
Ultimately, he and the others fought Dracula and destroyed the vampire’s Brides (as well as Dracula himself), saving Mina from becoming a vampire.
How he is like me:
We both are kind, knowledgeable (in my case, with fan fictions), and want to help others (for example, I sometimes get worried about my peers at Inspire, especially when they freak out).
Character Discussion with Kelsey: 6/4/23:
What’s wrong with them?  Can I help them if possible?
Having no control over someone’s actions and/or abilities to calm themselves down can cause you to come off as being rude or not caring when it’s actually the opposite.
Is it fair to say that Michael would prefer everything to be calm and quiet with everyone in an happy mood all the time?  If the answer is yes then you truly worry about someone and wish they weren’t going through whatever they are going through.  You can relate, but sometimes not being able to help them might get you frustrated as well (as in you might fixate on your own moment of frustration and voice your own moment of frustration)
When someone is going through a moment of frustration at Inspire, it is ok to say “I’ve been there before and it just takes time to be able to control your emotions over a situation that you aren’t able to control with your words (i.e. asking for a break or being able to say this is too hard I need a minute)
Does Van Helsing get frustrated with those he tries to help that aren’t aware of the vampire’s that are out there preying upon people?
“If he does, he likely keeps it to himself”
Unfortunately for Lucy, it seems like a series of unfortunate events led her to become a vampire and there was nothing any one could really do about it

Academy's Undercover Professor sort-of review?? Lol (Part 1) (because there's a photo limit apparently)
A few days ago, I binged another manhwa in two days. What do I have to say about Academy's Undercover Professor? MC IS SO DAMN HOT???? AND BADASS??? SIGN ME UP!
(Kind of out of context spoilers if you didn't read it and plan to? Like, just screenshots of MC? But I also comment them, so expect spoilers there lmao)
Tumblr media
He's DAZZLING
Tumblr media
Scary bastard
Tumblr media
Low bun, yes sir 🫠 he's sad here, but he's so charming... hot damn
Tumblr media
And his internal monologue is funny lmao
"Shounen protagonist," says the MC about a Harry Potter-esque character. Literally, the adventures of that trio really give me a Harry Potter vibe
I mean??
Tumblr media
Look at that kid lmao dollar store Harry Potter at your service. Like, at this point, the similarities are funny to me
Tumblr media
If I had a nickle for every time a fictional character borrows Moriarty’s name, fully knowing who James Moriarty is, I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot, but it's funny that it happened twice. Albeit, Klein only used the Moriarty part. The first name was stolen from Sherlock in his case
Even so, I bet Rudiger is not the first nor last character to do this. I fully endorse it heh. It's amusing to me
Tumblr media
EPIC PANEL! SLAYYYYY (literally)
Tumblr media
Professor Rudiger Chelsea, please have some mercy on us poor folk 😢 you're just too stylish
Tumblr media
Yassss king! Be an underworld kingpin slayyyy <33
Tumblr media
Majestic. Absolutely majestic man.
WAIT WHAT, 10 PHOTO LIMIT?? I HAVE MORE SCREENSHOTS, I'm making a part 2 lmao
ANYWAY, you get the idea. I am infatuated with this man. Nothing unusual.
Storywise, the twists and turns are really entertaining. I looked into the novel, if it was worth a read after LOTM. A lot of reviews aren't that kind, citing it is repetitive and cliché, but if it's done right, I enjoy that type of stuff. So I'm letting it marinate a bit, so it can have a good translation lmao
I adore smart, badass MCs, so this seems like my cup of tea. It's really interesting how we're 60 chapters in and we still don't know Rudiger's real name, only past fake identities. And those identities are impressive! He's like a jack of all trades, it keeps things interesting
Also, the fact that he needs to be cautious on multiple fronts really adds a bit of anxiety in the mix, it keeps me on my toes.
(His poker face is hilarious lmao)

Continuing from yesterday. Van Helsing's repeated insistence that they made The Right Choice! is entirely for the sake of stroking the men's egos.
"So far," he said, "our night has been eminently successful. No harm has come to us such as I feared might be and yet we have ascertained how many boxes are missing. More than all do I rejoice that this, our first—and perhaps our most difficult and dangerous—step has been accomplished without the bringing thereinto our most sweet Madam Mina or troubling her waking or sleeping thoughts with sights and sounds and smells of horror which she might never forget."
It's just so obviously for the men's sake over Mina's!! Now, you may say "hey bastard! he's expressing concern for Mina here! what do you mean?" I'll tell you what I mean. This first and perhaps most difficult and dangerous step had no need to be so difficult and dangerous. What keeps them from breaking into the house in the daytime? Nothing, you'll see that it's nothing. VH agreed to Quincey's insistence they act at night because this presents another opportunity to whack his sexist message into their skulls:
"See! You are all shaken and put off by the dilapidated building, but just think how poor weak feeble Madam Mina would suffer had we brought her along!"
Her alleged weakness is leveraged to make the men feel all the stronger for braving a fucking haunted house.
The trauma that VH claims Mina would suffer for the rest of her life if she so much as heard a peep of their manly work is the trauma that Jonathan already suffers. "But he's cured, right?" Not how PTSD works. He was relieved to finally understand that his experiences were real, but that was only the first step to recovery. Imagine how Jonathan feels being told that if he is honest with his wife, she will become like him but with possibly no chance of recovery! After all, she is a woman and he is a man.
"So I shall go, if I may, and cheer myself with a few happy words with that sweet soul Madam Mina. Friend John, it does rejoice me unspeakable that she is no more to be pained, no more to be worried with our terrible things. Though we shall much miss her help, it is better so."
Mina is being kept here. To play fucking cheerleader for this old man. He is keeping her close so he can go to her for comfort, for reassurance that he isn't a thick-headed Dutchman like Renfield said. You are a thick-headed Dutchman, VH. It is not about her safety! She'd be sent home if that were the case! No, it's about tradition! It's about chivalry!
"I agree with you with all my heart," I answered earnestly, for I did not want him to weaken in this matter. "Mrs. Harker is better out of it. Things are quite bad enough for us, all men of the world, and who have been in many tight places in our time; but it is no place for a woman, and if she had remained in touch with the affair, it would in time infallibly have wrecked her."
Jack, I will kill you. I'm going to "infallibly wreck" you, you bastard. VH and Jack's repeated insistence on defending this stupid decision is unlike Jonathan's attempts to convince himself that he agreed to the right thing because oh no, they are not uncertain at all. They are patting themselves on the backs. They are Mrs. Westenra gloating about throwing out the garlic flowers. "I did not want him to weaken in this matter." Please, Jack, I would like him to weaken in this matter. These two only make each other worse, someone please separate them indefinitely.

I see literary analyses that immediately equate blood sucking and transfer to sex (a view that I find too limiting tbh), but none so far that mention “Seward sucking VH’s wound to save him” incident, which I see as a failing on their part.

van helsing is the unexpected audience surrogate. my man read the diaries and letters of jonathan and mina & immediately went "i love you, i would risk my life for you, you're so cute together, you're my children, let's be friends forever"... just like we did. and if we came face to face with these characters now, after following their stories since may, would we not also go "it's such a pleasure and honour to finally meet you, i feel like i know you already"? :')

Van Helsing: what must I do to convince you that the dead woman you loved and whose head I wanted to cut off is in fact a child-eating monster?
Dr. Seward: professor, you're my best friend, I respect you, but you sound like an insane person.
Van Helsing: let us break into Lucy's tomb, and you'll see that it's empty!
Dr. Seward: that doesn't prove anything! Maybe some perverts stole the body, you don't know...
Van Helsing: I found a child in the graveyard!
Dr. Seward: put that thing back where it came from, or so help me!
Van Helsing: well, we don't want the cops to think we kidnapped it, and we don't want to tell them that we were graverobbing either, so let's take the child into the city and drop it in the middle of the street as soon as we hear a cop coming.
Dr. Seward: that's the first sane thing you've said all night.

dracula, sept 7: "...the husbandman he pull the ear and rub him between his rough hands, and blow away the green chaff, and say to you: 'Look! he's good corn; he will make good crop when the time comes.'" I did not see the application, and told him so. For reply he reached over and took my ear in his hand and pulled it playfully.
Van Helsing setting himself up to make an 'ear' joke for his own amusement? He's metaphoring about pulling a "ear" of corn that will be fruitful given patience, and when John says he doesn't understand yet, he takes the opportunity to pull his ear :3

Van Helsing's reluctance to kill the 3 weird sisters is tied with how much he misses Jack in this moment. Because when they had to stake Lucy, they promised and committed to beheading her corpse together. When Van Helsing proposes their partnership, he says:
And if I work—as work I shall, no matter trust or no trust—without my friend trust in me, I work with heavy heart and feel, oh! so lonely when I want all help and courage that may be!" He paused a moment and went on solemnly: "Friend John, there are strange and terrible days before us. Let us not be two, but one, that so we work to a good end. Will you not have faith in me?"
And its true. When Jack works alongside Van Helsing, he does seem to be more confident, more sure of himself. The burden doesn't seem so heavy. They've relied on each other, almost exclusively, since Lucy's second death. When Van Helsing was conflicted about Mina being used by Dracula to spy on them, it is Jack who is able to counsel him and give him strength.
There is an irony in the fact that they promised to be there for each other, against these strange times, only to be separated by necessity. Initially, the plan was for the doctors to kill Dracula once his boat entered Varna. But everything changed and they had to split the Harkers, in doing so they split themselves.
And it does wreck havoc on Van Helsing's mind. He becomes laconic during his journey to the castle. In between trying to stay sane, trying to keep Mina safe, and trying to most importantly, do the right thing....he misses him. When the professor writes here:
"Oh, my friend John, but it was butcher work; had I not been nerved by thoughts of other dead, and of the living over whom hung such a pall of fear, I could not have gone on."
He IS working with a heavy heart, and he IS lonely when he desires all the help and courage that he would get. Even with Mina's wailing guiding Van Helsing to finish his work, his mind still drifts to the confidante he once had, and who knows when or if he would ever see him again. And that is the very definition of yearning.
