maghen avraham synagogue in beirut, lebanon. it was completed in 1925 on the ruins of an older synagogue that was destroyed in an earthquake in 502 ce. it's the only surviving synagogue of the 16 which were in beirut.
lebanon's jewish community consisted of musta'arabi jews, who went to present-day lebanon after the jewish-roman wars and had been "arabized", and expelled sephardic jews, who integrated into musta'arabi communities. the synagogue gradually fell to disuse as lebanese jews began to flee the country after the 1958 lebanon crisis, 1967 war, and later the lebanese civil war due to worsening conditions and reactionary antisemitism.
wadi abu jamil - beirut's former jewish quarter - was caught up in the civil war, as it stood between largely muslim and largely christian areas of the city. the neighborhood and particularly maghen avraham along with the remaining jewish families were famously protected by the PLO at the time, which lead to israeli suspicions that there were "palestinian weapons" hidden inside of it (there weren't); culminating in an israeli bombardment damaging it further in 1982.
it was restored with assistance from lebanese-jewish diaspora in 2010. (chairs were installed in 2019.) beiruti jews who immigrated to montreal, quebec reconstituted themselves into a congregation of the same name.

The dehumanization of Palestinians goes BEYOND the things we usually see, such as racism and Islamophobia.
It’s also the tokenization, treating Palestinian bloggers as “inspiration” for an OC, the parasocial relationships people are starting to form with more well-known Palestinian bloggers, and NOW polls on who the “worst” Palestinian is. Even people who’re supposedly ally’s to the freedom for Palestine movement are voting because of quote on quote “curiosity”.
You don’t have to be outwardly racist to dehumanize someone. Dehumanization involves stripping a person of their humanity and turning them into whatever caricature you think fits them best, whether it’s to sell an agenda or treat them as a source of entertainment.

TIL In an epilogue at the end of the original 1931 Dracula film, Dracula breaks the fourth wall and taunts the audience, saying vampires are real and to be afraid. In a 1936 re-release, this was censored by the Hays Code, out of fear it would encourage belief in the occult.

i want to reiterate i don't think israeli hostages have had the time of their lives and i don't think this ordeal was fun or easy for them but looking at how israeli hostages have been released by hamas and how palestinian hostages have been released by israel is a really dark-sided reality check on just how low the standards for israel have been to meet a basic threshold for humanity and yet it still failed

Reminder to be kinder to Palestinians on this platform (and in general tbh). They deal with a lot of hatred, insensitive comments/questions, and a lot of things in general both on this platform and in real life. They're human beings. They have emotions too. Please be kinder.
My heart hurts every time I see Palestinian creators here deal with so much negativity and having to constantly remind people that they're humans too. Again, please be kinder. Stop dehumanizing them.

If I ask nicely will people reblog this and tell me what their most common breakfast is? Not your favorite necessarily, just what you have for breakfast most frequently? 🙏🏽

You have to recognize your capacity for harm. You cannot omit the harm you've done to others to remain "good." Anybody can be a bigot. Anyone can be an abuser. Anyone can harm anyone at any time even those who have been harmed themselves. The world is not made up of victims and villains only, this is life, not a Saturday morning cartoon and you are a human being who can or maybe even has hurt others and you HAVE to acknowledge that to learn to be better.

Today marks one year since the devastating war in Sudan erupted. An estimated 15,000 people have been killed, and another 8.6 million forcibly displaced, in what the U.N. calls “one of the worst displacement and humanitarian crises in the world — and one of the most ignored.” The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, have both been accused of war crimes as the conflict shows no signs of abating. Widespread sexual violence, indiscriminate attacks, targeting of health facilities and the restriction of aid have left communities across Sudan shattered with dwindling resources to support them.
