↳ user there’s probably a technical term for what her position is and i just don’t know it, but bc there’s so much going on around the track at any given moment, sometimes the press and other media workers are focused on something or someone else, so she’s hired on by mclaren to specifically focus on mclaren to make sure that there is content for mclaren or mclaren sponsors to use. she’s not just lando’s photographer, she also takes photos of oscar, the pit teams, and the other staff that work in the garage, but she was hired on when lando started so her portfolio is pretty full of him. hope this helps!

In 2019, when you took on the job of being McLaren’s lead photographer, you hadn’t expected it would garner you the amount of attention it has, or that it would slingshot your career to levels of success you never could have anticipated, or that you would get a best friend out of it.

When you first met him back in those early days, you’d thought Lando Norris was an arrogant, pretentious, self-righteous prick who thought he was hot shit because he was a Formula One driver. However, he’d quickly proven you wrong when he’d admitted to you that a lot of the confidence was an act━ carefully constructed to hide his insecurities about his performance both on and off the track.

“I mean, we’re drivers, yeah?” He’d said. “But we’re also actors. We’ve got these personas that we have to uphold even out here on the paddock, and I’m always worried I’m not playing the part well enough.”

It hadn’t made a lot of sense to you then, you thought he was pulling off the persona of Total Douche remarkably well, but in Shanghai, things changed.

After the Chinese Grand Prix, things were dour. Lando had DNFed━ the first in his Formula One career━ which contrasted greatly with his previous accomplishment of P6 in Bahrain. Carlos Sainz hadn’t been doing very well, either, and it didn’t paint a very pretty picture for McLaren so early in the season. You’d thought he’d throw a hissy fit, tear Daniil Kvyat apart for his role in the crash, or at the very least throw some shade his way, but he hadn’t done any of that. He’d accepted his fate with grace, joked to the media about how boring the race had been because of what had happened, and then gone on to congratulate Carlos for at least finishing.

What was even more shocking, was that despite his disappointment and the frustration he must’ve been feeling, instead of going back to sulk in his lonesomeness or drown out his feelings with booze and loud music at some club, he’d comforted you later that evening.

The morning of the race, as you’d been getting ready in your hotel room, you’d gotten a text from an unsaved number admitting to you that they’d been taking part in a months-long affair with your boyfriend but had been previously unaware that he was already taken and therefore wanted to let you know to clear their conscience. You’d managed to hold yourself together then━ mostly because you’d already done your makeup and, quite frankly, didn’t have the time to sob it all off and then attempt to salvage it━ but as the day drew to a close and the adrenaline of the race and its excitement wore off, and with nothing else to keep you distracted, you were struggling to keep yourself composed.

Lando had somehow noticed in that weirdly perceptive way of his that something was off, and he’d sat with you, asked what was wrong, and listened when you━ through tears━ explained the situation to him.

“He sounds like a total fucking muppet,” he’d commented after you’d said your piece, and he’d done it with such a deadpanned expression that it had startled a genuine laugh out of you. Because yeah, you’re (now ex) boyfriend had been a muppet.

After that━ and after all the rom-com and ice cream binging you’d both done in his hotel room afterward much to the chagrin of Lando’s nutritionist and the displeasure of his PR officer━ you’d rescinded your initial judgment of him. He was significantly less dickish than you’d originally thought, and it let you finally understand what he’d meant when he’d talked about putting on a persona.

The cocky, know-it-all prick that Lando pretended to be half the time was all just an act to hide his overly self-critical nature fueled by his insecurities.

By the end of the season, he’d gained a little confidence of his own and had subsequently toned down the assholery when he no longer needed to “fake it til he makes it,” and you were calling him your friend.

It’s 2023 now, and he’s since been upgraded to best friend status━ a role he takes very seriously, and constantly reminds you of.

“I’m your best friend━” case and point, “━you have to come to Bali with me. Literally, like, what am I gonna do without you there? Do you expect me to just go by myself? What if I get lost? Or what if somehow the mafia, who have unknowingly had a hit out on me for years, track me down there and I’m kidnapped and ransomed off for billions of dollars? What will you do then?”

“You just want me to take pictures of you,” you answer, rolling your eyes only because you know he can’t see you through the phone.

He gasps in mock offense. “I cannot believe you think I value you so little! I want you to take pictures of me and be here to help me make fun of awkward tourist spray tans so I don’t feel like a total asshole for being the only one who laughs.”

You laugh at that. “Well, unfortunately laughing at bad fake tans doesn’t pay the bills.”

“But taking pictures of me does.”

“Yeah, when McLaren is paying.” You turn back to your laptop, a photo put on pause mid-edit splayed across the screen. It’s of Lando, as most of your photos tend to be despite your attempts at keeping things even between the McLaren boys. It’s the last of the images you need to send over for their 2023 sendoff, and when it’s finished you’ll officially be without work for a painstaking two months. “I’m on break too, technically, until they need promotional shit for the new season.”

He huffs, and you can almost imagine the childish pout on his face. “What are you even doing, then?”

You hesitate, not because you don’t want Lando to know about your winter plans, but because you don’t really know how he’ll react, which means it could be anything between genuine happiness for you and congratulations, or abject horror and feigned screams of anguish. He’s always been dramatic like that, but even more so now that he’s comfortable enough with you and himself to have crawled a decent way out of his shell.

Even still, he’s your best friend and it would make you a pretty shitty person if you didn’t tell him.

“Believe it or not,” you start, wringing your hands together, “but Manchester City actually hit me up with an inquiry. Asked if I’d be interested in working with them on a project documenting their training throughout the winter months. I said I would love to.”

He pauses for a good long moment, and you prepare for the screaming, but all he says is━ “Man City? You traitor. I thought Man United was our forever!”

“Be so fucking real right now, Lando Norris,” you answer, laughing as you do so. You’re relieved, at least he hasn’t gone the feigned anguish route, but you also can’t tell if he’s happy for you or hiding his true feelings behind humor like he’s prone to doing. “You know damn well you only watched them for Christiano Ronaldo and he hasn’t played with United since 2009.”

“Technically he played for them in the 2021-2022 season,” he grumbles.

“Yeah,” you deadpan, “and he was dogshit. We both agreed to pretend it never happened.”

He groans, “I can’t believe this. My day is ruined and my disappointment is immeasurable.”

“Oh, get over yourself. It’s only for the winter. I’ll be back in McLaren Papaya by February when they need me snapping shots of you and Oscar next to the new livery,” you promise.

The reality is that it’ll probably be sooner. McLaren has always been good about getting you back at HQ pretty quickly, either to get some snapshots of the beginning of Lando and Oscar’s pre-season return or to just capture some material of the engineers at work to promote their readiness. You understand why they can’t keep you around all year━ no Lando and no Oscar means no you━ and with the sheer amount of content you capture and edit for them throughout the season, they’ve got enough to last them the handful of weeks you aren’t working.

Unfortunately, you aren’t working with a driver’s salary to keep you sustained over the break and rent certainly hasn’t been getting cheaper. In past years, your bank account has been chirping with crickets when you’ve returned to work after the winter, and that was before your landlord had decided to make your life a living hell.

You have an important job, but it’s by far the most important, and sometimes sacrifices have to be made. Working in sports media taught you that early on.

“Who knows?” Lando’s voice snaps you back. “Maybe Jack Grealish with his perfect hair and perfect calves will steal you away and you’ll be in sky blue forevermore.”

You laugh, “Jack Grealish is a happily taken man, and although he does have perfect hair and perfect calves, I’m more of a Haaland girl anyway.”

He guffaws. “I can’t believe I’m hearing this. You’re so far gone that you already have a preferred player. Jack Grealish is England’s poster boy! Everyone loves him whether they like City or not!” He heaves a dramatic sigh. “Christ, I can already feel you slipping through my fingers. I give it a week over there at Etihad before you call me up telling me I can find a new best friend because you’ve replaced me with Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez.”

“For someone who supposedly hates Manchester City, you’re certainly well-versed in their roster.”

“Well duh, I need to know my competition,” he says, like it’s obvious.

“Ah, yes,” you snark back sarcastically. “Because you, a Formula One driver, have to be worried about the football players of Manchester City.”

“Apparently I do if you’re calling yourself a Haaland girl now!”

You burst into cackles and he’s following shortly after with chuckles of his own that eventually peter out into a comfortable silence. You are really going to miss him for the few months you aren’t working with him.

The Formula One schedule is so jam-packed across the season that it typically means you’re getting to see him every day for an hour or two at least, if not for the entirety of the time he’s at the track. You follow him and Oscar to their sponsor obligations, their interviews, and everything in between. It’s honestly rare if you’re not getting a moment to goof off and dick around with one another━ and it’s even rarer for you to not actually see one another face to face in passing at the very least.

The off-season is your least favorite time of the year for this very reason, and though it makes you feel a bit full of yourself to think so, you imagine Lando doesn’t enjoy this time of year much either for the same reason.

“I promise I won’t replace you with any of the City boys,” you say after the silence has stretched on a moment longer.

He huffs again, but you can envision the smile tugging at his lips. “I suppose even if you do, I’ll just show up to a match and steal you away again.”

“As if. Have you seen Grealish’s calves?”

Wriothesley Headcannons (Best friends to lovers) (any gender reader) PART 3

In celebration of the upcoming winter solstice, your school is hosting a school-wide dance. A prom, you could say.. Every student is asked to bring a date of their choice and to celebrate and enjoy the shortest day of the year! (I got this idea from chinese culture because I'm half chinese. We celebrate winter solstice as a way of gathering family before chines New year!)

You being your usual gorgeous self (slayed), had a infinitesimal large amount of suitors asking you out. Of course, you were flattered. You had even had to empty out parts of your closet for the amount of gifts people had got you in hopes you'd accept their hand.

(Let's set the scene) It's the week before the dance, and you are with Wriothesley, relaxing together on his bed, bonding like usual. Your toying with a confession letter from one of your suitors. You've been trying to ignore Wriothesley's unusually intense gaze on your hands for the past few minutes.

"Y/N, who could've caught your eyes for you to reject everyone from your large pool of....suitors" drawled Wriothesley.

You leaned your tired head on Wriothesley's comfortably large shoulders (best pillow), sighing "My gut keeps telling me that I haven't found the person I want yet".

"At this point you might as well go to the dance with me" teased Wriothesley, his stupidly deep and attractive(!!!) voice quietly flowing into your ears.

(Oh dear) you could help but freeze in shock at his words, a fiery blush working its way up to your face. In this moment you met his gaze, and he looked the most handsome he has ever looked. Ice- blue eyes blazing, his strong body right beside you, his calloused yet gentle hands on your hands.

"Oh, Wriothesley, your such a trickster!" You tried to laugh off the rapid beating of your heart, but your half-assed attempt to hide your attraction hasn't gone unnoticed by Wriothesley.

"Oh? Dear Y/N, why so nervous? After all, we are just "friends" aren't we?" He chuckled.

Your mouth goes dry as your heart races. Suddenly, your brain cells started vibrating and working as hard as they can to compute an answer. You then realized it. YOU. LIKED. WRIOTHESLEY. YOUR BEST FRIEND???? (OMG CONFESSION TIME???)

"Well, I wouldn't be opposed to going to the dance with you. You're the only male suitable in this entire school" you tried to ask nonchalantly, bit that was difficult due to you being a blushing mess.

Wriothesley suddenly gets up from his bed and you can't help but notice how fucking hot he looks in a tuxedo(that's y'all school uniform ;]). "May I offer you a hand, and a heart, Y/N?" He proclaimed softly, only for you to hear.

You can't help yourself anymore "Wriothesley, I don't want you like a best friend. I want to be more with you. I want to see you everyday and have my day light up. I want to spend everyday and every moment with you." You confessed passionately.

You close your eyes in nervousness and open them up to see Wriothesley's shocked face.

"Oh, wow, I mean. I knew you liked me, I just didn't expect you to be so...bold. so unlike you....I like it~"

You got up and bowed to Wriothesley dramatically, before speaking "You may have my hand and my heart, Sir Wriothesley. I'll gladly go to the dance with you" you spoke in a cheeky tone. You could help but smile as you saw his eyes light up like a thousand suns.

VERY RARELY... i try to respond asap to anyone who asks about translating (i LOVE TRANSLATIONS) but other than that i feel very shy about replying to comments LOL 😵‍💫😵‍💫 even though i love when authors respond to MY comments...

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

for a while i wrote a lot of "missing scene" wangxians where it's just like a moment or a handful of moments in the middle of the action, and i think all of them have implicit angsty endings: because they're just a missing scene, and there's no continuation, you understand that "having that conversation"/"kissing or almost kissing then" changes nothing in the greater arc... wei wuxian still gives jiang cheng his golden core, is still reviled and then killed... etc... but definitely the angstiest fic i've written remains flightless bird which cair read and then immediately blocked out of their mind forever

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

MOST Of my fics that aren't the above missing scene fics are happy endings. some faves include no other waters and to be a good companion, both post-tyk happy endings; at least in this lifetime, my most recent take on mdzs happy ending; a lot's gonna change, a wedding fic which was written in honor of most beloved friends mary + aubrey's actual real life wedding (and actual real life happy ending)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

not really lol probably once a year i'll get a rude comment that i immediately delete and go "? lol" about. i was NOT victimized by shino which >:/ okay... excluding me...

9. Do you write smut?

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written?

ive really only written one crossover (atlas: wangxian + hualian) which got it all out of my system. crossovers are hard to do well especially when all the things i'm into are in world structures that can't easily overlap

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

no fics "stolen" as in reposted wholesale (TO MY KNOWLEDGE?) but definitely i used to notice some plagiarism here and there when wangxian was really popping! mostly specific turns of phrase/passages but sometimes whole concepts. also one time i tweeted a funny hualian thread about hua cheng purring and then a couple days later i decided i want to whip it up into a fic and then like 3 hours after i posted the fic i went and checked the tag (these were the days that you could check the tag more than once a day) and someone had posted their own fic that was just beat-for-beat my original thread. uncredited obviously. lol

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

YES AND I ACTUALLY KEEP A CHERISHED SPREADSHEET OF ALL THE TRANSLATIONS!!!! like claire, mostly spanish/russian/chinese. most exciting tls for me personally are the persian and turkish ones

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

NO!!!!!!! I'M TOO UNRELIABLE AND OVERPROTECTIVE!!!!!!! every time zoë and miriam or fey and fer talk about how much they love co-writing i'm like omg. wish i were constitutionally capable of doing such an activity. but i'm not

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

THE SCHOONER WINDFALL OF OCRACOKE ISLAND!!!!!!!!! ROLL THE CLIP!!!!!!!!!!!!

no uhh idk passions come and go! once i get Particularly Into a ship i'll come back and read fics for it years later... every ship fills a different niche in my heart...

15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

also inception au wenzhou fic but that feels more likely to be finished... maybe one day...

precision + beauty of language; i am really funny; i'm good at choreography

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! i like it the most when i personally can understand it LMFAO but like really well-written bilingual writing where you DON'T have to speak the second language in order to get the gist of what's being said - either bc of elegant/subtle translation in the narration or bc of context - is sooo good and so hard to do well

OR i love lianzi's approach to translation in her shl chinese restaurant au (ONE OF THE FUNNIEST FICS OF ALL TIME) where some of the text is written in chinese and you hover over it for the english translation

19. First fandom you wrote for?

technically les mis but that doesn't count. jojo's bizarre adventure

20. Favorite fic you have written?

ummmmm mmmm hmmmmm hmmmmm. at any given time i mostly like my most recent fics the best but i do think our eyes on the road is particularly enduring - i love a lot of the landscape writing i did in that one, i think i captured the vibe of "late winter in new england" particularly well!

What are some of your favorite fics? It doesn't have to be aot or something you've written

omg tysm for this question I love talking about my fav fics ESP BC SO MANY OF THEM ARE NON AOT 🙈🙈 I had to go to my ffn favs for this hihi

so this is list is home to the fics that I have truly idolised, read repeatedly and tried to emulate in some way or another in my own writing journey:

1. Heartbeat by letmeannoyyoutoday. U must have heard me screaming about this fic before. It is god tier, the angstiest, the most painful Sasusaku you can imagine. There isn’t even smut in it but still I’m rendered a sobbing mess everytime I read this story. And I read it every fortnight or so, I swear. canonverse. sasusaku get married.

2. The most dangerous things by Childoftheashes. Man this fic is the tastiest thing in the ichihime fandom istg. Ichigo is unapologetically horny and bossy and slutty and I love everything about it. Orihime is absolutely clueless and drives him up a wall and it’s literally completely smut! This author is one of my smut senseis. I also really love "chasing paper tigers like dreams" by her.

3. Sometimes I think the stupidest things by starsinew. Ok I’m sorry for putting this here bc this user doesn’t have this fic up anymore (I managed to find the epub and thank fuck for that) but I had to talk about it bc this fic changed me on a fundamental level. I fell in love with it so much, even to this day I look back at it with an education lens as to how to write smut. God tier. I hope this author is well and living their best life.

4. Friends with Benefits by confused panda bear. Syaosaku, card captor Sakura. Again a story that doesn’t exist anymore online but I still remember some of the dialogues bc they were so iconic. Definitely a primer on smut writing for me. I invite you to check out their other stories tho they’re literally the harugou mother, birthing the most insane crackship in the free! fandom and getting everyone else drunk on it thanks to their god tier writing.

5. Clarity by randomteenager — angsty but silly gruvia. i love it so much.

6. Seeking Ginny by Casca. Harry/Ginny fic with heavy emphasis on Ginny's personal growth.

7. How to Coexist by Spoilerarlert and also washed up and rundown, I haven't finished it yet but fuck its amazing so far. Both are modern AU stories, one in NYC and the other in Chicago. I can't recommend this author enough, they have a very original and compelling style of writing.

8. Little Beast by herblacktights. This is my fav modern au, high school eremika. If you haven't heard me raving me about this fic already then ur obviously new here. ITS AWESOME! go read it now

9. Dog by Ackermom. floch x eren at it's unhealthiest best. canonverse. This author is one my favs actually, I devour ALL of her work, no exception. I also really enjoyed her reibert fics.

12. For everything there is a season by SouthSideStory. If y'all are sasusaku stans then you know SouthSideStory already. She's phenomenal. This one is angsty sequel which delves into Sakura's feelings post miscarriage. I highly recommend the prequel as well.

13. Fool for you by Hand of Destiny. Syaosaku. Card Captor Sakura. Syaoran is a business mogul from a very traditional Chinese family. Sakura is an innocent girl who decides to try giving the escort profession a go. God tier, I swear. It also has a sequel!

starting to post some of my abandoned wips so i dont feel like i completely wasted my time. If anyone wants to take this idea and run for it, PLEASE go ahead!

this was going to be a modern Zukka AU taking place during Ghost Month in Taiwan. Also trans Sokka. There were a lot of moving parts that just didn't come together. It drew inspiration from Druck Season 3 and also Marry My Dead Body somewhat

Zuko was going to slowly fall for this guy he met but actually it turns out he's a ghost and now they're attached. That was gonna be a Huge Reveal lol. Ghost Month is coming to an end but now Zuko is in love and can't lose Sokka so he agrees to a ghost marriage. They maybe live happily ever after? I hadn't had it all planned out lol.

Character backgrounds:

zuko is half-Taiwanese (his mom is from Tainan but his dad is a famous Japanese businessman). He’s run away from home w Iroh so they live in a little place in like Sanchong or st bc it’s really the only area they can afford

Iroh owns a bubble tea shop that’s quite reputable in the community but it’s really no big deal at all bc there’s thousands of them around

Meanwhile Azula lives w her dad in that corkscrew apartment building by Taipei 101. You know, the one that EVERYONE knows houses all the rich and famous ppl in town and has a specific elevator dedicated to bringing your car up to your living room

Sokka and Katara are half First Nations Canadian and half Indigenous Taiwanese- probably Paiwan. because how awesome would that be. They came to the city for college but stuck around. Sokka worked at a math cram school and Katara works in a medical clinic. Her dad is super proud!

Sokka died tragically recently in a car accident

Katara lives in Ximen with Suki who does ballroom and is a personal trainer by day. She’s Sokka’s ex AND Katara’s ex lollll

Suki is Japanese

Aang originally came from Nepal to study in college but he stuck around to work for a big international NGO. He has a big sheepdog Appa and Momo is a cat. It’s a nightmare for his landlord. He lives in Da’an near the park, which is great to give Appa space to play

Toph is Chinese. She grew up in Xinyi with her parents, rich Chinese businesspeople who moved permanently to Taiwan right before Toph was born. She ran away from home during college and is living with Aang right now

ok the beginning of the plot outline:

It’s Ghost Month

Zuko is kind of a depressed weird stoner. Lives with Jet, Haru, and Song in a flatshare.

Haru is actually super gay

So Zuko is dating Jin and is soooo not feeling it.

Goes to G Star? one night, hangs out outside, feels a tap on his shoulder and looks over his shoulder. It’s sokka asking for a lighter and zuko is so intrigued by him

Zuko starts cancelling plans w his gf just to hang w Sokka who is super mysterious

Like Jin was gonna come over to have sex but Zuko really doesnt want to but then Sokka ends up coming over and theyre gonna watch a movie together omg?? But then suddenly Sokka is gone.

All his guy friends (Jet, Haru) are way more into girls than he is

Zuko has a party, invites Sokka. Sokka shows up with Katara and Zuko is like omg ew he has a gf

Weird and distant the whole party

Ignores Jin and she gets wasted

One of Haru’s friends tries to dance w him and he gets super weird

Has a weird panic attack, goes to get high alone

Comes back out when everyone is gone, Sokka is still here cleaning up

They kind of have a moment, Sokka sees how fucked up he is

“I didn’t know you had a girlfriend?” “You mean Katara? Katara is my sister.”

They stare at each other quietly for a minute and ALMOST KISS but then song comes home fighting with her boyfriend omg. The moment has been ruined it’s over now, noooooo

Nobody else up to this point has seen or interacted with Sokka (other than Katara but Zuko didn’t interact with Katara either)

I am having the most miserable Chinese New Year 😭. On the evening day 2 my entire family got infected with the flu

(not covid. Just regular flu. Which is also just as bad??? It's covid without the fever, but with dry cough and sneezing 😭)

And to make things worse, today we had a Cyberpunk Red Zoom session planned... and I didn't want to skip it...

In my fever induced confusion, I made exceptionally bad choices 😭??

I chose my Netrunner's elder half brother over the crew again 😭. I KNOW. I said I cut ties with father and Arasaka... but big bro doesn't have anything to do with this 😭

I panicked when his psychosis got triggered 🥲. I can't let my only brother go. I didn't want MaxTac to hunt him down 🥲

My party was yelling at me/my Netrunner to run. Even our DM was hinting I'm making a bad choice...

But I chose to burn all my ram shutting down all the cameras in the building and blocking outside communication so no one can call MaxTac 🥲

Then I ran after my brother trying to stop him 🥲. My stats are horrible. I forgot that without my ram I'm defenceless against an Adam Smasher level NPC 🥲

I told my friends to just let me die. But my friends said that as their characters, no way any of them would leave me 😭

I feel so guilty now??? Omg 😭. This is the first time I heard Exec use the F word (friend) and it's cos I dragged everyone into my family drama 😭

Rockerboy is my Netrunner's bff. He ran after her and got mortally wounded after taking a hit for her 😭

I managed to save and stabilise him, but now my own character is about to become mortally wound cos I overloaded her by forcing her to quickhack without ram 😭

We cut the session short cos our DM has to attend a reunion dinner... but my Body stat isn't high 🥲. I don't think I'll survive the death saves next session 🥲. This is how I die I guess 🥲

#my friend is pissed at me cos her Rockerboy told my Netrunner to run... if I listened... at least only one of us will die #but now both of us may die if my brain burns out from the overload and if my big bro reaches us again and finishes her Rockerboy off 🥲#can you blame me tho?! he's my Netrunner's best friend! 2gether the Series (Thai)

I guess a lot of people hate this and don't think the leads have any chemistry at all? But I actually loved them. It's not a hot-and-heavy kind of chemistry; it's very sweet and kind of innocent, but not facile. On the other hand, they were all I liked about the drama.

Ai Long Nhai (Thai)

This is the most ridiculous drama, and it brings me so much joy. Nothing hurts, everything is beautiful. Nhai is a precious scatterbrained bean, and Ai falls in love at first sight. All of the things about Nhai that drive other people crazy just make Ai go all fond and soft. I smiled so much watching this that my face hurt.

A League of Nobleman (Chinese)

Good but definitely felt like it was missing scenes. OT3 Lan Jue/Zhang Ping/Wang Yan!

Bad Buddy (Thai)

Wow this is good! It's Romeo and Juliet with some West Side Story thrown in. The actors are fantastic, and watching how they progress from sort-of-enemies to committed boyfriends is wonderful.

Bed Friend (Thai)

OMG Uea the sharp-edged traumatized bean, and King green-flagging all over except for that one moment where he needed to have his head flushed in a toilet for reacting in the absolute worst way. I love this show A LOT. It's not a perfect rendition of a young man who has suffered a lot of abuse in his life, but it handles that element really well (therapy and medication FTW), and the romance is sweet and sexy.

Between Us (Thai)

I liked the first half a lot, but didn't like Team very much after they got together. His personality/behavior changed; he was, IDK, tougher? earlier, which I liked a lot more. However, I LOVE Win so much I can't even.

Bad Guys (Korean)

There were several moments when certain things almost made me nope out (Oh Gu Tak’s entire self; my overwhelming desire to cut Jung Moon’s hair so that his one eye wouldn’t be perpetually covered up; the detective lady whose name I never bothered to catch), but I was so glad I finished it. Park Hae Jin in eps 9 – 11 blew me away; and the ending was kinda dark but in a way that was so satisfying.

Be Loved In House: I Do (Taiwanese)

Not my favorite Taiwanese bl, but not bad.

Beyond Evil (Korean)

Wow, so much going on. The characters developed beautifully, even though Juwon went through a bit of a bratty phase. I loved the mystery.

The Blood of Youth (Chinese)

I loved this so much. THE FOUR WAY BROMANCE omg. And the way the ML slowly but surely dismantled the villains' plans! He met every set-back with a “well, that’s unfortunate, but I can fix it.” It was great, even though the romance they shoe-horned in for the ML was annoying.

Dangerous Drugs of Sex (Japanese)

I watched this because I was curious. It was... Hmm. Well, all I can say is, if you too become curious, make sure you pay attention to the reasons it's 18+, and then assume it's going to be even more f*cked up than it sounds.

Dr. Romantic 2 (Korean)

Honestly I watched this for the Seo Woo Jin whump (Ahn Hyo Seop does suffering so attractively), but since doctor shows otherwise make me nauseous I didn’t watch the last couple of episodes. But I really liked the various relationships among the different characters.

Duoluo Continent (Chinese)

Watched this for Xiao Zhan. I’ve never watched anything like this outside of having caught a glimpse of the Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh cartoons my kid watched, and it was...different. The FL was so irritating, but I wasn’t burned out on this kind of FL yet when I watched this so it was fine.

En of Love: Love Mechanics (Thai)

Too short! The fact that is was remade with most of the same cast and an expanded story makes this one feel almost like a pilot. It was definitely good enough to make me track down the longer version (which I'm currently watching). YinWar are really engaging actors.

Fish Upon the Sky (Thai)

Same actors as in Never Let Me Go, but this one is a comedy. The main character is a high maintenance nerd who goes through a glow-up that almost no one really notices (because he's STILL a high maintenance nerd) except the guy who has had a crush on him forever. Of course it's a guy he thinks is terrible. I loved it. Which is weird because I generally hate comedies.

Handsome Siblings (Chinese)

I enjoyed it mainly because it’s ridiculous.

He is Psychometric (Korean)

Super cute, comfort show. The twists and turns were great. I loved the characters. Side note: the actor who played young Kang Sung Mo did an amazing job. I actually had to stop at one point and Google the cast to make sure the show hadn’t somehow managed to make the older actor look like a teenager because the younger actor absolutely nailed the older actor’s take on the character. (Turns out the younger actor is the ML in The Uncanny Counter! In which I also love him.)

Healer (Korean)

OMG I love this show. So much. I even loved the romance. I wrote a post about it. (Did I go looking for Ji Chang Wook’s filmography after watching this? Yes, yes I did.)

HIStory 4: Trapped (Taiwanese)

Getting into bl drama is a lot like getting into bl manga/manhwa: requires accepting that dramas with action/mystery/SFF are few and far between. (I would also add "dramas with adults" but there seem to be more and more of those these days.) This was one of the first bl dramas I found that wasn't just a romance, and I was SO EXCITED. It's a little cheesy, but I loved it. The cop/mafioso romance (which is also a grumpy cat/sunshine puppy romance) between the leads is a lot of fun. And it has what might be my absolute favorite side pairing: the always-smiling assassin and his adorable tiny cop boyfriend (a sunshine velociraptor/sunshine puppy pairing, if you will).

Hotel Del Luna (Korean)

This show is amazing! Jang Man Wol stewing in rage and ennui for a thousand years only to have everything turned upside down by a stubborn, good-hearted puppy-man who she ironically stuck herself with. The slow, heartbreaking, breath-catching reveal of Man Wol’s past. The range of creepy, sad, funny, heart-warming ghost stories. The characters. The production quality! Ah, so good.

If You Wish Upon Me (Korean)

Another OMG I LOVE THIS. Ji Chang Wook is so good at “sweet, tough, vulnerable, and a good guy despite being raised by wolves” characters. I did cry semi-regularly due to the nature of the setting, but while I usually avoid things that make me cry, this was good crying. And so worth it. Also, the FL is a hoot, and a BAMF when she takes on the ML's abusive ex.

The Imperial Coroner (Chinese)

Adorable nerds falling in love over corpses in ancient China WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE.

Jade Dynasty (Chinese)

I get why people don’t like this, but I did. It was a silly, sweet, fun story and it only required a time commitment of an hour and some.

Joseon Attorney: A Morality (Korean)

I wanted to like this more than I did, because Woo Do Hwan. Loved him. Favorite part was when he was imprisoned and being tortured and someone came to visit him in his cell and he was fidgeting and fussing with the filthy straw while he talked with them. Like. Oh honey. WTF are you doing, just have a good cry and take a nap before your next torture session my babie. But I got kind of bored? As soon as we found out what happened to his sister I gave up and fast-forwarded through the rest so I could at least see what happened.

Jun & Jun (Korean)

I had to be in the right mood to watch this (open to a silly office romance with ALL the tropes), but when I did finally watch it I loved it. There is second (and third) lead syndrome, but all three of the men in love with Lee Jun are likeable, and I honestly would have been happy with Lee Jun choosing any of them. Also, Lee Jun is the most precious bean.

Lawless Lawyer (Korean)

I struggled through the middle of this. I’m not a huge fan of how in Korean shows everything always goes to absolute shit for the main character(s) mid-way through. I mean, I don’t mind that element of storytelling in general; it’s the way it’s so devastating in so many of these shows. This one hit me when I was in the wrong frame of mind, I think. But I’m glad I stuck it out because the way the villain was ultimately taken down was fantastic.

Love and Redemption (Chinese)

OMG LOVE. Serious, serious love. I wrote a post about this.

Love by Chance (Thai)

Ehhh. I ended up fast-forwarding through all of it except the Ai/Pete stuff. That is a great relationship, though. Pete has internalized politeness to an adorable degree, and is sweet despite having been badly burned; Ai went from "uninterested in dating anyone at all but assumed straight" to "oh I'm in love with this guy? I must be gay. Cool."

Love for Love’s Sake (Korean)

This was a sweet show. The concept was clever, and the way it held onto its secrets until almost the end worked really well.

Love in the Air (Thai)

I tried watching this about a year ago - first Thai drama, first bl drama - and I got through the first arc and quit, and didn't go back to bl or Thai dramas for literal months. It was mostly due to the production quality, the cheesiness, and all of the pouting Rain does. But I went back to it recently, after watching A LOT of Thai bl, and I actually love it? Still cheesy, still wishing they could have invested in a boom mic, but I can handwave that now I guess. I really, really love the second story arc, about PaiSky. Sky is a great character, and Prapai goes through character growth! Starts out a pushy, cocky playboy who thinks it's cute to stalk the guy he likes, ends up being a compassionate, responsible boyfriend.

Mad Dog (Korean)

MORE LOVE. This was the kdrama that caused me to fall down the rabbit hole of kdramas in general. I’ve watched this three times. The found family element, the character journey that especially Kim Min Joon but also Choi Kang Woo go through – help, so good. And what a great introduction to Woo Do Hwan. I wrote a post.

Maiden Holmes (Chinese)

This is like...if your favorite, heart-warming, Jane Austen-inspired romance drama was a mystery set in ancient China and had cool fight scenes. Comfort food.

Manner of Death (Thai)

This is barely a bl (very few bl tropes); it's more of a mystery with romance between the two leads who are both guys. Very good, if a little cheesy in places. And let's not talk about Tan's marriage proposal because wtf dude.

Memorist (Korean)

I watched this early in my exploration of kdramas and didn’t like it for some reason; I fast-forwarded through a lot of it. But I think I might have just not been in the right mood before, because I tried it again and it was excellent! The twists and turns of the mystery, the way things that seemed unrelated turned out to be all connected, was awesome.

Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice But To Kiss! (Japanese)

This was adorable! The main character had a lot more layers than I expected, and his love interest was so sweet.

My Beautiful Man (Japanese)

Two high school boys with problematic behavioral issues whose issues complement each other. It's unexpectedly charming and touching, and I'm really glad there's a sequel!

My Roommate is a Detective (Chinese)

If you want a bromance where you can easily ship the male leads, and has some whump, and you don’t mind cheesiness: here you go!

My Lascivious Boss (Vietnamese)

There's not a lot of Vietnamese bl out there, and I wanted to try one. This one is good; not the greatest acting, but still good. Also, the episodes are so short, so it's a quick watch.

My Tooth Your Love (Taiwanese)

One of the main characters is a dentist, hence the absurd English title. I'm not good with any dentistry situation so I admit I watched a couple of seconds here and there through my fingers, but it's really just a lovely romance. I can't remember where I read it, but this is a good description (paraphrased): the leads woo each other with plushies and naps.

Never Let Me Go (Thai)

Rich high school student's dad is murdered in front of him, and has another high school student, who has never bodyguarded before ever but his dad makes him do it because his dad is kind of a jerk, assigned as his bodyguard. Weird premise, EXCELLENT delivery. The actors who play the boys have great chemistry, and make the characters feel very real.

The Novelist (Japanese)

I don't even know what to say about this drama? It's a bit like those weird little Indie films from the 90s. Like, it's pretty good, but it's also...something.

Numbers (Korean)

I really liked this until the last episode. It fizzled out. Is there supposed to be a second season or something, maybe? IDK.

Oh No Here Comes Trouble (Taiwanese)

Oh this was GOOD. The title and ML's hair cut (yes I judge) made me think it was going to be silly, and there was silliness but there was also a lot of depth and emotion. ML's family situation is a traumatic running thread. The mysteries are clever and fun but heartfelt and sad too. It was just so good.

Old-Fashioned Cupcake (Japanese)

Oh this is so sweet! It's based on a bl manga I haven't read yet, but definitely will because this is just the sweetest, warmest story.

Our Dating Sim (Korean)

Very good, very sweet. I really felt for Gi Tae, waiting so many years, and then hiding so much anxiety.

Sell Your Haunted House (Korean)

Oh this is so good! A great supernatural show, with a great FL, and the FL and ML become besties rather than romantic yay.

Semantic Error [TV show] (Korean)

I watched this because I’d heard of the manga, though I absolutely wasn’t expecting to actually get sucked in like I did. Excellent show. Another one I wrote about.

The Sign (Thai)

I loved this so much!! Action, crime, reincarnation, mythology, romance, humor - there’s so much going on and I enjoyed all of it. The last two episodes used some hand-waving instead of explaining things, but I’m not mad. Billy and Babe had amazing chemistry, too.

Together with Me (Thai)

I couldn't get Manner of Death at the time, but everyone keeps talking about MaxTul, so I watched this. It's not bad.

The Uncanny Counter 1 (Korean)

The first kdrama I watched! The only reason it didn't cause an instant obsession with kdramas is because i started watching Love and Redemption after and that was 59 episodes of blissful hyperfixation. But I love the supernatural/superhero/semi-religious? aspect, I love the different families that the ML has/finds, I love the whump.

Under the Skin (Chinese)

So far this is the only modern Chinese drama I’ve been able to finish. The mysteries were good, the relationship growth between the two male leads was compelling! Good stuff.

Unforgotten Night (Thai)

This show is really pretty terrible. I'm incapable of not laughing when the soundtrack cuts to a track of ~Italian mafioso music every. single. time that Kamol comes on screen. But it's gone so far past terrible that it's come out the other side, and I kinda like it.

The Untamed (Chinese)

First east Asian drama for me! I watched and rewatched this show multiple times in 2021, and without it I don’t think I would have explored [read: become obsessed with] east Asian dramas. I’m still in the fandom and reading the fic and watching the FMVs and etc. I cannot quit WangXian.

Until We Meet Again (Thai)

This is an amazing drama. Romeo and Juliet, but make it a modern bl college story with reincarnation, and the reincarnated Juliet has PTSD from his past life memories. Excellent storytelling, acting, everything.

Watcher (Korean)

Ooooooh this is so good. All of the characters are so compelling, and the overall story kept me engaged. Also, Seo Kang Joon: yes.

Why R U? (Thai)

This is kind of terrible, except that ZeeSaint as Fighter/Tutor absolutely sizzle. I also loved watching Fighter figure out his sexuality via 50% dialogue and actions and 50% Zee's incredibly expressive face.

Word of Honor (Chinese)

I watched this after watching The Untamed, and was kind of meh about it. But then after I’d poked around cdramas a bit, I watched it again and loved it. IDK what happened, but now it’s a fave.

You’re All Surrounded (Korean)

Ok, the FL in this is terrible. So annoying. Despite that and some of the other things that didn’t quite click with me, I was unable to drop it because I NEEDED to find out how Eun Dae Gu’s story would end (very satisfyingly actually!).

Movies:

Long Time No See (Korean)

I love this so much! Assassins; cool fight scenes; traumatized lead; murder boyfriends! UGH it's so good.

The New Employee (Korean)

Not bad. Not great, but not bad.

Pipeline (Korean)

NGL, I watched this because I wanted some Seo In Guk whump. It definitely delivered! It was a fun, fast-paced story, with very little character development and a very underused villain, and really good action. I turned my brain off and enjoyed it. The only thing I couldn't help mentally griping about was the complete lack of ear protection in most (all?) of the drilling scenes. They should have all been partially deaf, good grief.

The Yin Yang Master (Chinese)

Wacky and good!

The Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity (Chinese)

Less wacky than the other one, but also good, and the bromance!!!

🍋This inspired by @eroslove88 but their fanfic was really horny and I wanted to write one that is more wholesome lol- since I feel like it fits Xiao more.🍋

So summary -

Xiao moves to a new school as a transfer student and the teacher makes him sit next to y/n (SHOCKER!!! OMG!!! SUCH PLOTTWIST!!!DRUMROLL)

So they befriend Xiao.

Xiao speaks Chinese and English and y/n wants to learn the language so they can speak Chinese with him. They have been friends for some time now.

Y/n and Xiao sat in the library. Xiao had gotten a Chinese translation book and he was teaching them some basic words, because y/n begged him a lot of times and he got annoyed so he decided to finally agree.

"So now that you know the basics, try saying something..." He said pointing at the book in front of them.

"But I can't..." Y/n whined.

"Hm. Then I will just leave." He said with a stoic expression.

"Nonono!!!" Y/n exclaimed. "Please okay...uh can you start by saying something?"

Xiao sighed."你很笨."

"Oh uhhh...I have no idea what that...means" y/n looked dumbfounded

"You will figure it out someday." Xiao looked at the ceiling.

Y/n looked through the pages, trying to figure it out.

"You are dumb...? HEY!" Xiao chuckled.

"Yeah. Good job."

Y/n punched his arm lightly.

"Okay, okay. I will try to say something...你好你好吗?"

Xiao nodded. "我内心快死了"

"oh what did that mean, did you uhhh say you are doing good???'' y/n smiled awkwardly.

"No, I said I am dying on the inside" he said, with a deadpan expression.

"Ouhhhkayyy." Y/n smiled awkwardly. "Glad I am making you feel that way"

"Next. Go. Say something again." Xiao crossed his arms.

"Okay, aaa uhhh???...我很臭 ?"

Xiao chuckled. "Yeah, that's correct."

"Really???" They smiled.

"It's true that you are...smelly." Xiao laughed a little.

"WHAT NO I TRIED SAYING THAT I AM HAPPY, NOT...SMELLY!!!" They covered their face with their hands.

"Well at least you were honest". Xiao smiled.

They chuckled. "Whatever...say something more complex, I like listening to you speak."

"Alright, this is going to be the last thing for the day because It's getting late and I have to go... Okay, this one is more complex I guess. 我爱你 "

...a very small hint of a blush appeared on his face.

"Ohhh what did that mean?" Y/n said, they were completely clueless.

Xiao pretended like he was coughing.

"I will uhhh tell you some...other time. I have to go. Bye."

'hm. Why did he leave so quickly was it something dumb?' they thought to themselves.

Grabbing all their books, they left the library,very confused.

(The next day)

"Xiao!" They waved at him.

"Hi" he nodded.

"Thanks for the lesson yesterday." They smiled.

"I wouldn't call it a lesson...but no worries." He said with a stoic expression.

They took a deep breath in.

"I just wanted to say one thing before I go off for class...I learned it yesterday. 我也爱你 " they smiled.

The realization hit Xiao.

"So you...did translate what I said??? Forget it, I just uhm wanted to say something different...since you wanted something more... complex" He blushed a little.

They chuckled. "Yeah...whatever you say. Still I appreciated it."

They kissed his hand and ran off to class.Xiao just sat there flabbergasted, until the bell brought him back to reality. He smiled to himself a little and hurried towards his next class.

Chapter 4

I have focused this chapter on MC and Jakes building relationship, how they both deal with their feelings for each other.

MC and Jake arrived back home when her phone started to ring, when she pulled it out of her pocket it was Phil. She paused for a moment deciding if she was going to answer or not.

MC: what?

Phil: Why MC? Why? Why did you destroy the apartment? I really want to work things out with you

MC: Go to hell Phil

MC put the phone down and went to put her stuff in the guests bedroom, Jake had put her cases on the bed for her to unpack. After a couple hours of getting things in the right place it was finally time to relax for the night.

Jake: How about we order Chinese for dinner?

MC: that sounds amazing, you order and I'll go get us some beers

Jake: okay, I'll find us a movie to watch

Jake placed the order and then started to look for a movie to watch, MC had gone to the shop to get some beers. When she got back Jake had picked out a movie for them to one of their favorite's IT. 30 minutes later the food had arrived Jake went to grab the food while MC grabbed a couple plates and 2 folks.

They both sat down, watching the movie and eating Chinese food after the movie had finished. MC cleared the plates while Jake moved the takeout containers.

Just as MC had grabbed 2 more beers MCs phone rang again she picked it up and it was Phil again.

MC: What the hell!! Why do you keep phoning me? We are over

Phil: I love you MC, I promise I have changed I've turned over a new leaf

MC: in the space of a couple hours? Just leave me alone

MC hung up the phone putting it back in her pocket, Jake had come back from putting the rubbish out and he noticed MC looked upset.

Jake: Are you okay?

MC: just my dumb ex boyfriend that won't get the hint

Jake: Do you want me to talk to him?

MC: it's okay, but thank you that's so sweet of you why couldn't I have found a guy like you instead of Phil

Jake's cheek started to turn a little red, which MC noticed. She giggled at his cuteness and she walked over to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. They both looked deep into each other's eyes and their lips came closer together. Before they knew it their lips had locked with each other's Jake pulled away from MC.

Jake: I'm so sorry MC I didn't mean to I..I..

MC: No it's…it's okay y-you don't have to say sorry

Jake: I am truly sorry MC

Before MC could reply Jake had gone into his room and closed the door leaving MC all alone in the kitchen.

Jake's POV

How could I be so stupid why did I have to kiss her soft lips? She's just got out of a relationship. She's your friend, you dummy, she's not interested in me. Why would she not go for computer geeks?

She will never want to be alone with me again, not after what just happened, I will understand if she wants to move out. I mean why wouldn't she want to stay here with someone that goes round kissing her.

Okay come on Jake just get some rest and everything will be fine in the morning. I hope I do really like her. From the first day she came into the shop and my eyes looked up and saw her walking towards me.

The next morning MC was first to wake up. She went to shower after she finished and went to make some coffee.

MCs POV

Why did Jake react like that? I do really like him, did I not kiss him well? Oh god what if I kissed him really bad and it made him feel sick. How can I look him in the eyes after that he's probably freaked out and he doesn't want to face me.

I can't say I blame him in a way I know I wouldn't find it pleasant if someone kissed me really bad. Omg what if he wants me to move out? And that's why he hasn't come out of his bedroom yet?

Come on MC you can brave this and just ask him if the kiss was really that bad, but what if he says yes it was bad. Okay, okay the only way to find out is just ask him that would be the grown up thing to do.

Lost in her thoughts MC didn't hear Jake coming out of his room, he lightly brushed past her causing her to jump. Her heart nearly jumped out of her chest and she got goosebumps all over her.

Jake: Sorry MC did I make you jump?

MC: it's okay Jake, I was lost in my own little world

Jake: I'm going to be working late tonight I've got a stock take to do

MC: oh okay, well if you need any help just let me know

Jake: I will do thank you

Jake grabbed his coffee and left for work leaving MC shocked not really knowing what just happened. Had Jake completely brushed off what happened last night? Was he too embarrassed to face her? All kinds of questions ran through MC's head.

MC kept herself busy for the rest of the day finishing off some last minute tweaks to a project for work. She put her laptop away and sat down on the sofa out of nowhere her phone buzzed.

Jake: Hey, are you busy?

MC: No, I've just finished doing some work. What's up?

Jake: can you come down to the shop this stock take is driving me nuts, plus I would like to talk to you

MC: be down in 5 minutes

MC leader forwards trying to work out what it was Jake wanted to talk about, putting her phone back in her pocket she made her way down to the shop.

When MC arrived in the shop Jake was up a step ladder with a clipboard counting and writing down the stock. She wasn't quite sure what to do so she just stayed near the door waiting for Jake to finish.

Jake: Hey, there you are thanks for coming to my rescue

MC: no problem what do you need me to do

Jake: can you put this onto the computer for me while I finish up here

MC: sure no problem I can do that

Jake: thanks MC you're a lifesaver

MC took the clipboard and went into the back office and started to put all the information onto the computer. After a couple hours all the information was now on the computer Jake had just finished.

Jake: Finally finished, thanks for doing that for me

MC: Do you need me to do the other one as well?

Jake: It's okay it can wait till tomorrow

MC: Jake? Can I talk to you

Jake: Sure what's up?

MC: about What happened last night I am sorry if the kiss was bad… there I said it

Jake stood frozen for what felt like hours just looking at MCs face, he walked over to her and ran his hand across her cheek.

Jake: MC the kiss was amazing. I shouldn't have acted like that. It was wrong of me. We are friends after all.

MC: I guess you're right

Jake: it's late why don't you order some takeout and this time let me pick up the beers it's the weekend after all

MC got up from the computer and went back up stairs to order the takeout, her mind was still going crazy by what Jake had just said to her.

MCs POV

I just can't work that man out. He kisses me I try to talk to him, he tells me the kiss was amazing but he just wants to be friends? If that is truly what he wants then I guess I have to go along with it.

I pull my phone out of my pocket and use it to order some takeout, this time I pick Italian as it is my second favorite food. I placed the order and put my phone down waiting for Jake to return.

Jake's POV

What the hell was all that about? Why did I tell her I just wanted to be friends? Jake, you are such an idiot. I do this everytime I like a woman. I just end up pushing them away and I end up broken-hearted.

Now I have to tell her how I feel even if she rejects me. I have to tell her it's now or never. But what if she starts to hate me? What if I tell her my undying love and she turns me down completely.

do you think any of them speak another language?

Well, as I said in my au or whatever we want to call it Vinnie was born in Italy and Italian is his native language so there's that. His voice also sounds a bit different when speaking Italian because of different pronunciation. He doesn't have an accent though. I guess that is as good time as any to say all the nationalities I gave him over the years that I no longer headcanon: Polish - no reason, just total self-indulgence, German - because he's often angry and German sounds so angry when you don't know the language, Finland - I think there was something about me thinking that Finland is a country with cold temperature? And you know, he's always cold...? Something like that. Tbh, Finland as far as I know is a pretty cold country soo... that was actually my longest nationality headcanon for him besides Italian but I moved on from this. At one point I also made him French and I would have stayed with it but you know why I didn't? Because in that one episode To Paris with Zoe Blythe was trying to learn French and she wanted the pets to help her but none of them knew the language and once I remembered that I was like "omg, I can't make him French, he didn't know that language in this one episode!!!" Yeah, I normally ignore canon whenever I want to but for some reason my mind told me I can't ignore this one fact. So then I was like "Ok, what's a language that is most similar to French? Italian, duuuh!" plus I saw this one post on devaintart which also made him Italian and so his nationatility was cemented. Anyyyway, now that I finished talking about my man of choice...

Just like Vinnie moved from Italy to America so did Sunil from India so Sunil natively speaks Hindi.

Penny can speak a bit of Chinese but just that, a bit because she's learning. She's committed to learning more but not that committed.

Minka knows a good chunk of Spanish, enough to feel comfortable if she went to Spain but not well enough to know everything of course. She likes the language so she just kinda speaks it sometimes for the fun of it so her friends picked up a bit but nothing worth mentioning unless it's Russell. She kinda infected him with her enthusiasm and he began learning it so he's not half-bad either. It's just something he does when he has nothing better to do. And it's Russell so you know he's quite engaged.

Aaaand that's all I think.

I just found your blog (I am learning Chinese so I keep getting the blogs of other language learners reccomended) and while scrolling through it, I ran across that other ask about being a speech pathologist. If you don't mind a question from an absolute stranger - do you happen to have a book rec for understanding American accents & pronunciation geography? I'm a native English speaker, but my foriegn friends keep asking me English pronunciation questions and I can't answer them - I generally want to answer "well, in some cities they say it that way, but in other cities they say it that other way, so both are fine". But their textbooks say it has to be one way, and that just confuses me so much. (one recent example was when to pronounce "the" as "thee" vs "th-uh" "Th-uh apple" and "thee apple" Both sound natural to me but "th-uh apple" is my normal. But apparently that is "wrong" for most of the USA?) I'd like to get a better understanding of what defines mainstream English and what parts of my own speech are a geographic quirk.

Also, I feel like the thing making my friends sound foriegn isn't pronunciation details like that, it's more rhythm and tone or something, but I don't have the vocabulary or background knowledge to figure out what part of their speech sounds off or how to fix it, so if you have a rec for a basic "how speech works" book I'd love that too. (I'm not asking for a book that will magically give me all the knowledge of your profession- that is obviously impossible. But I'd like to learn at least a little since I get asked these types of questions so very very very often and I feel like I am generally exceptionally unhelpful, to my dismay. (I have tried some random linguistics books and they were a) very dense and difficult and b) not really covering what I was looking for.)

Any advice is appreciated! (But there is absolutely no urgency and it's not very important, so don't feel obligated to like, do research or even reply if you can't think of something appropriate for laymen off the top of your head.)

I have also come across foreign speakers who were told they Had To Pronounce Things This Way, but in my experience, if they get snippy with me about it when I tell them that's not true, then I will send them to videos or TV shows to show real speakers pronouncing it a variety of ways. Once I sent a friend an Appalachian accent video and she couldn't understand it at all which was funny.

When I was in grad school, unfortunately the only real resources we had were for AAE (African American English) dialect, because my field has a horrible history of diagnosing Black children (especially boys) with language disorders for "incorrect grammar" that was really just a dialect. This was really the only dialect we studied.

But really, in my experience with intermediate+ English learners, they are VERY aware that words have multiple pronunciations. I mean, especially in Chinese, they should know that's true because those with Taiwanese and Beijing accents can struggle to understand each other (for just one example). Also, many of my Chinese friends learn British English, and are very aware that different English-speaking countries have different vocab and pronunciation.

I also agree that for the most part, if non-native speakers are difficult to understand, it's less about pronunciation of individual sounds, and more about the flow of the sounds together. We combine sounds, we skip over some, we connect them, and also - especially for tonal language speakers - their intonation doesn't sound natural and it throws native English listeners off.

But unfortunately I don't know of any good accent book resources. But to help you search yourself, the Normal (white i mean what) dialect is formally called Standard American English in educational settings. If you google that you might be able to find some books on it. This also goes for Standard British English and Standard Australian English.

I haven't watched them but WIRED on youtube has a whole set of videos about a US Accent Tour lol You could check those out?

OKAY OKAY get ready for a lot of short stories about what I've been up to LOL:

Last night Jayson & I got into a fight when I got home after work, because we were supposed to go to the speedway today since they have a monster truck event, and he said not to bother buying him a ticket, since he doesn't want to go even though he knows how excited I am for it. So after our fight about it, I reach out to my friends that are going, and asked where they are sitting, so I can try and get a solo ticket near them. BUT by the time my friends answered, all the tickets were sold out, so I can't go :( Which made me yell at Jayson more lol. I went to the casino to watch Tyler's band play, and hung out with his step-son, Gage, for a while. My friends invited me over to play on their bouncy castle, which I might do tonight after Jayson & I get back from seeing Barbie.

The day before that, so my bday, I didn't do much lol. I napped for most of the day, and only worked like 3 hours max haha. After work, I went to my parents and had dinner with them, and then we went out for ice cream & tried a new ice cream place. It was very yummy. The ice cream place also sells banana milkshakes, which is rare, so I texted Collin to tell him (since he loves banana milkshakes), and then texted Tyler to let him know they have tiger tail ice cream (as that is also somewhat difficult to find). My parents bought me The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Oathbringer, which are two books I very much wanted :3 I immediately started Oathbringer lol. Then I came home & fought with Jayson and then felt sad for the rest of the night.

The day before that, so Wednesday, after work I went to Dan & Ally's, as Ally & Mik had a "surprise" planned for me for my birthday. The surprise was decorating the house, as you can see (at least a bit) in my pinned photos. We drank all night long, and did some shrooms, and I got way too drunk lol. I guess Isaac wanted to tattoo "23" on me (which given his 19 tattoo... makes sense), but didn't, for whatever reason. I do not remember any of that though LOL. I didn't fall asleep until like 4am.

Tuesday was a peaceful night. Bought some joints, and went for a walk at sunset to have a smoke. Ended up swinging on a swing set for way too long, it was so much fun omg. I highly recommend!

Monday night I went over to Tyler's after work, and we hung out in his "man cave", trying to find one of those silly hotdog/weiner cooker things to buy. We watched some food show too that he likes, and he was telling me about how he wants to open up a place that only sells philly cheesesteaks (and was quite shocked to hear that I had never tried one). When I got back, I was mad at Jayson again, because he didn't bother asking where I was or why i was out for so long or who I was with.

Last Sunday, Jayson & I went to the beach for the day, and I got very very drunk - I did not realize how much drunker you get in the sun lol. We have a beach tent, so I laid in that for most of the day, as the beach was semi-flooded so the sand was more mud than anything & the water was very cold. I also burnt half of my body (the half that was not quite in the tent). Jayson & I picked up chinese food on the way back in, and then I drunkenly (or exhausted from the heat) passed out on his bed for a couple hours LOL.

And Last Saturday, I impulsively drove almost 2 hours away to go to a bar that Tyler was playing at, and stayed until he left (so like 3am). Drove back in an awful storm, the highway was flooded, and the lightning was literally blinding. Very scary drive, but made it home safe (and so did he). And I had fun! Some boys hit on me at the bar, which was really funny to me. The one was like "come here often?" and i was like "I cannot believe you are trying that line on me". I told him no, through laughter, and that I came to support the band, as I work with the drummer. And his whole attitude changed, which was equally funny to me. He was like "Omg you know the band?! Can you ask them to play more Tragically Hip next time?! Please please please!?! I'll owe you my life!!!" Very funny!

And yea! That's been my week! Tonight we have to start watching Cleo, Jayson's step mom's cat, for the week while his parents are at their cottage. And we are going out for dinner & to see Barbie, like I think I already said.

I play badminton :) and something that's really funny is I'm exactly the same height as a badminton net & it's great for checking if they set it up properly hehe. and hey am on reserve team for my uni! am a very very valuable member actually. they can always count on me to lose a few games and make any supposedly easy matches more interesting. (am kidding lol I love my team. they're genuinely so wholesome and lovely. they're like my life support right now so all the kudos to them)

ooh hmm. I don't know I can't pick!! I love most weathers and will romanticise any and all of them as long as a few day's passed. recently though I think I'm craving those really cold but really clear days with the wide blue skies and wispy clouds. reminds me of winter 2020 when I was doing nearly nothing but hiking around a lot

[Found Chatlog] The Hacker.

This interview originally took place on January 28th, 2023.

The phone screen whirs to life to reveal… quite a peculiar place. Darkness creeps at the corners of your vision, and everything in the room is tinted slightly green with the night vision feature of the camera. One by one, some notable features become clear as the camera slowly adjusts to the dim light.

One- a stack of takeout boxes and bags that teeters ever so slightly to the side, but balanced with enough precision to remain standing for… who knows how long.

Two- a cat tree with various tattered felt rats and strings with bells on the end hanging from the ballasts of the fortress, obviously well used.

Three- an electric keyboard in the corner of the room, dusty with manila folders propped up where sheet music should be.

Four- a desk with two monitors and a high-backed swivel chair (what’s on the monitors is unclear, as they’re too blindingly bright to be picked up by the camera.) It’s facing away from the computer. It’s also occupied! She has picked up on the camera recording her a while ago, curiously following the lens with a catlike quirk to her lips.
