A character analysis of Boston and Ray Ep. 6

This episode reveals a bit more about Boston’s character, and while it doesn’t justify his actions (because your past doesn’t have to justify all your present decisions, especially in fictional characters) we’re able to better understand his impulse to “humble” others when it seems to him like they’re finding their own way.

We learn that Boston’s mother remarried, and flew to another continent to start her new life. And while I don’t want to make assumptions, something about Boston’s politician father (who calls him only to speak about his campaign and winning over young people) encouraging his son’s impulses to toy with the emotions and bodies of others may have had something to do with it. Boston, time and time again tells Nick that the potential of the public finding his sex tapes (with other men) would be a burden to his father’s career. We don’t know if Boston has come out to his father, but the ultimatum that Boston must graduate or be sent back to New York to live with his mom shows his father’s willingness to get rid of a son that may not fit his public image. Boston is a talented photographer and someone in the demographic he wants to target; why so eager to send him away.

In the next scene, while comforting our favorite crazy lovesick puppy, he tells Nick, that the reason he doesn’t make lasting relationships is because he knows he has to leave anyway (and some more be about how he’d be a better photographer abroad). Maybe it’s because of the pressure he feels from his father, but Boston believes that there’s no place for him permanently anywhere. No one has chosen him for an “unconditional forever love” and no ever one will. He’s had no power over that. If my assumption that Boston’s father already knows of his son’s sexuality, and is slowly freezing him out and that Boston knows this already, Boston’s view of his future in Thailand, one that will always be queer, must be bleak. His own father, a popular candidate elect, does not want him. This loss of control triggers him. We see Boston seek control of potential rejection in the way he pursues his flings. He prefers Nick over all his other flings because he’s confident that Nick will always choose him no matter what selfish things he says. He’s envious of Mew who’s constantly chosen and pure, of the perfect Top who rejected him and has his life together, and of Ray and Sands budding relationship. He believes he’ll be left alone again, so he sabotages externally against anyone’s progress.

It’s what makes his scenes with Ray that much more interesting. Because Ray is just like him, except he sabotages internally. 

We were introduced to Ray’s family background a few episodes back, and the toll it took on him emotionally, physically, and mentally. His mother was a young and talented actress who married rich, and whose light was dimmed in that marriage. And whether it was resentment over her lost career, Post-partum depression and an uncaring husband, or just a worsening addiction that was left untreated, she died alone drowning herself in alcohol. We know that Ray did not receive much affection from his mother and that his father was just as neglectful. Ray has learned to use money to buy emotions, companionship and intimacy. Unfortunately, he seems to be following in both his parents footsteps. 

There is a theory going around that Boston has had a secret unrequited crush on Ray. And while I don’t think there’s a lot of evidence that supports this ship, it’s a plausible theory. However, the way he constantly goes back to Nick when he needs comfort and conversations, other than just straight sex, says the opposite. I think a better conclusion would be that Boston finds comfort in Ray’s lack of growth and misfortune. After all, they’re very similar. Leftover, abandoned, rich kids that were never chosen. I don’t even think he had any ill intention against Mew when he slept with Top or even with Ray. I think deep down he’s secretly comforted by seeing Ray heartbroken. It makes sense that he was triggered when he saw that Ray might have found someone to help him come out of that misery. He doesn’t provoke Mew or Top the way he does Ray. Maybe it’s because Ray doesn’t see how similar they are. Maybe it’s because Top and Mew see right through him. 

Mew’s role in their friendship is also really interesting 🤔. Ep. 7 might give us inside Mew’s thoughts and actions. Is Mew manipulating his rich friends to get his dream career and partner or is it all all a grand plan to help heal the lives of the people he cares about most.

Overall, I love how real the show feels. The discussions of drugs in Thailand’s queer community, of privilege and class struggle, it all feels incredibly genuine. It’s hot and steamy and we’ll written. Like we CAN have all of these things at once! The growth that I see in BL/Queer (the slash is necessary) content gives me hope. Please give the lesbians (AprilNamchueam) more screen time plsssssssss 😩.

RayMew

I honestly don't understand what is happening anymore. We saw Ray starting to move on from mew, we saw him in a bathtub with sand and now he's going to be with mew?? Like what is happening here?

I loved the fact that they were always just friends, never more than that and now that is ruined. Now we have these two disasters together, and they both don't even like each other like that. Mew is clearly using ray as a rebound and ray thinks of mew as his safe space. Let me elaborate on that.

RAY'S FEELINGS

No matter what is shown it is clear that the only reason ray cannot get over mew is because mew is his safe space, he knows mew, mew has saved him once before, and no matter what he says, mew has never really tried to stop ray from drinking. Yes mew may make some comments or some snide remarks, but he never actively tries to stop him. So for ray, mew is someone he knows, someone who is safe territory.

Ray also has a little bit of an obsession with mew, he is the only one ray has thought in terms of dating. So, it's no wonder that he jumped straight into dating mew.

MEW'S FEELINGS

Mew is ...... idk what he is doing, he knows something was going on with sandray, he knows that ray has an unhealthy obsession with him. He also has no romantic feelings for ray, so I don't get why he is doing this. The best thing for him would have been to get drunk with cheum, april, and ray, shit talk top and then move on.

Now he is also going to get influenced by ray's bad habits and get into another mess.

ep 6 was to much drama (in the best way). like i was gagged 99% of the time. part 3 didn’t help either, cause ray just went ham and started dog pilling on everyone and they mama. mew outing top for cheating while pining him down and kissing up on his neck, CRAZY!!! p’jojo and the crew were insane for this one

Sapphic Summaries Part One: A series where I recommend my favourite wlw media

Today I would like to acknowledge a medium of content that I feel is overlooked which is audio dramas specifically a recent favourite of mine which is Starship Q Star which you can listen too on Spotify.

This is the description:

When a tone deaf space agency sends the “first all woman and non-binary crew” on a PR mission to Mars, they inadvertently end up the last six humans in the universe. Lead by Co-Captains (and exes) Aurelia and Sim, STARSHIP Q STAR follows this extremely queer crew on their quest across the galaxy to find a new home.

My Opinion:

This show is hilarious and chalk full of messy queers, complex relationships and extreme horniness. Also there's Bob and I love Bob. Its humor is on the same wavelength as the Harley Quinn animated show and as a fan of that show I think anyone who enjoys it would love this. Its wacky and you never quite know what's coming next but it always has a satisfying pay off and I can't wait for season two. So if you too are starving for wlw content give this a try I promise it won't disappoint.

Dean stood at the top of the church on October 26th, 2008, getting prepared for the day’s sermon as usual; he had been on edge for days, trying everything in his might not to call Castiel to make sure that he was okay.

Castiel was an angel, after all; a tricking, pie-stealing, trust-breaking, barbarous hedge-born joitheaded liar of an angel, that is, and Dean was sure he would be just fine without him or Sam nearby to help him. Flipping through his bible to some of the tabs he had out in his bible to be able to find what he wanted to say, Dean heard the front door of the church push open.

Listening closely, the eldest Winchester quickly realized that it was just his brother who had decided to show up a tad early for the sermon. Dean listened as his brother’s footsteps came closer and closer to him, stopping right beside him just as he found the page in his bible that he was searching for.

“What’s up, Sammy?” The priest asked, tilting his head slightly in his brother’s direction. “Cas asked if he could come to see your sermon, since he’s, uh, picking up his books later on,” Sam informed him, though it seemed by Sam’s hesitant that he already knew what the answer to that question was going to be.

“Tell Mr.Novak that there are other churches across town that he may enjoy more,” Dean hummed with a sarcastic smile, still feeling rather upset by the whole ordeal. “Dean, you can’t keep running from-” “Castiel can fuck off, okay, Sam?” Dean snapped, frowning as he pretended to flip pages in his bible again. “Now if you would excuse me, I have things to do, Sammy,”

Dean felt a little bad as Sam sighed and turned away, disappointment radiating over him as he dragged his feet and retreated back to the house. The man could hear the back door slam as he turned another page of his bible, and he tried to remind himself that Sammy was upset with him too and needed a way to express that without too many repercussions. Despite the guilt hanging over him, Dean quickly got the rest of his planning done and stood beside the door to begin greeting guests as they flooded in.

Most were old voices, people who has helped raise Dean and Sam and aid their father in learning how to raise two children on his own, people who had brought the young boys meals when they realized their father left them home alone, just in case they hadn’t eaten in a few days.

Despite this, there were one or two new voices who dropped by to check things out, one has just moved to the area and the other just trying to figure out their religion or what they did and did not believe in. In both cases, Dean welcomed them with open arms and greeted the rest of the usuals before making his way back up to the front to begin the sermon...

So, funny story. Mine and Jill’s bed frame cracked last night so I’m gonna need you to not ask any questions and give me the money you owe me from that bet you lost about that guy at the pool.

His attempts at not looking startled most definitely failed, his large grip almost stuttering to stop whilst mixing pancake batter in a too small container. Chris quirks an eyebrow at his sister who looked far too pleased from her barstool throne. He ponders a moment about the bet, only recalling because he still felt the heat in his ears from embarrassment as he lost when some asshole couldn't flirt to save his life and get with some pretty and well-meaning lifeguard the last time they were on vacation. Personally, he thinks both Claire and Jill set him up to fail, though he never raised such an opinion and instead agreed to eventually pay off the money he owed and now it seems his dear little sister wanted to cash in on the most awkward of times.

Resuming his cooking he hums in what he hoped was a patronizing way, though the tone didn't exactly match the slight amusement dancing in his eyes. "Go fetch my wallet. Go ahead and order whatever brand you like using my card." He wasn't going to deny her, not when he did technically owe her, and it wasn't like he was poor, the truth of the matter was that he had more money than he could possibly spend, buying a bed frame for his sister and best friend?? The least he could do.

"Try to get one that's more sturdy, Claire. Our family has a way with breaking furniture. Don't forget I also still owe you guys a coffee table.."

Wolf and Griff - High functioning

(post 2.1 quest) unexpected

Alright, so by now we’re all aware that the hand placement in the group picture represents relationships/connections between the characters, right! Okay! Now the problem is, we haven’t seen Mew and Sand interact in the trailer but yet Mew is holding Sand’s arm in the picture!? What could this mean? Well I for one think Mew is the actual shit stirrer here, like he’s just too innocent, it’s suspicious. Especially when the type of people he surrounds himself with are all mess and drama (except for Lookjun’s character, she’s an angel). So what if one of the ways Mew stirs the pot is by purposefully making Ray and Sand meet. Like to make Ray get over his crush on Mew, cause there’s no way he doesn’t know, he must know?!. And one of the scenes where SandRay are fighting could be when Ray finds out about this.

Overall I think this tiny detail is part of the overarching plan that Mew has to get revenge on his friend(s) or whoever. His face looks all innocent and cute, but I see evil in those eyes.
