Why I think Ray suggests threesomes to get Sand to actively choose him over others, an unnecessary analysis:

Sand is actually the first one to mention threesomes when Ray interrupts his date with Amm. I actually don’t think Ray was suggesting anything sexual when he invited them over to swim and drink, he just didn’t want to be alone:

But Sand drags him to the side and questions his motives:

Sand isn’t interested in a threesome. Once Ray convinces Sand to hang out with him, we see Sand send Amm on her way. And we spot a very smug Ray on her way out:

Ray learned two things here - 1) Sand doesn’t want to share and 2) Sand was interested enough in Ray to want to be alone with him.

There was no reason at this point that Amm couldn’t have come with them just to hang out, Ray didn’t seem to mind. So that told Ray that Sand was at least somewhat attracted to him - and attracted enough for Ray to be chosen over a one night stand.

Moving on to Ray’s jealousy. The next time he suggests a threesome is with Mr. Freddie at the Halloween party:

This is a clear attempt to break any chance of a hookup taking place, clearly not a real proposition. He wants to make the two uncomfortable and probably hopes that Sand will behave the same way he did before - as in wanting nothing to do with a threesome and pushing the extra party away.

Here Mr. Freddie removes himself from the situation, but I think Ray’s intentions are clear. And we get another parallel with Ray’s smug look at Mr. Freddie as he leaves:

Lastly, we have the camper with Nick. This one is especially funny because of how uncalled for and out of the blue the suggestion is… it’s the middle of the night, Sand and Nick had been asleep, they’d also made it clear to Ray that they were NOT hooking up.

Yet, Ray still asks them for a threesome after pushing his way between the two:

The juxtaposition of suggesting a threesome and then immediately turning your back to and freezing out the third party cannot be ignored:

It was clear this was another attempt by Ray to get Sand to choose him. Even though it was unnecessary to do so in this moment.

In short, Ray is a big baby who doesn’t like to share but uses the fact that Sand doesn’t like to share to push the right buttons to get the outcome he wants:

You know what absolutely kills me about this? Sand doesn't even look surprised. He isn't teary or wide-eyed. It's a look of pure disappointment. The kind that says he knew this would happen from the start, and he's utterly powerless to stop it.

While seeing Sand breaking down in tears would have been devastating, there's something very achy about this reaction. It's hard to put into words.

I love that Sand is trying so hard to move on but also can't because he sees how much Ray is hurting himself and, at his very core, one of the reasons Sand loves Ray is that Ray needs him. It's the Ray wants to be taken care of and Ray needs to be taken care of and Sand loves that about him. Sand knows he loves that about him and he hates that he loves that about him but he gives in again and again to trying to save him from himself.

But, in the end, it's Sand who leaves with Nick and leaves Ray alone on the couch because he is not going to be trapped by his own heart, he is not going to give knowing that he will get nothing.

Sand might love Ray, but sometimes he doesn't like Ray very much and he is willing to act on that. Which is very, very important.

(Cheum tries to call Ray out as a bad friend but Sand is the one putting in the work to actually help, support and stop Ray from running his own life. Sand sees Ray as a whole person, as the entirety of himself, in a way none of his other friends have ever bothered.)

I was trying to figure out why this scene had so much power to it and I realized this is the moment Ray figures out Sand’s feelings for him. It is so beautifully written and executed… I have so many thoughts on this:

Firstly, Sand is the one to bring up the elephant in the room that is RayMew. This is not surprising, given Ray’s lack of accountability and avoidance of serious matters.

What IS surprising is Ray’s immediate reaction to this - he completely discredits the seriousness and validity of RayMew’s relationship to Sand:

“… we need to see if it’s gonna work.”

He’s (consciously or unconsciously) trying to reassure Sand that he’s not entirely unavailable - that him and Mew are just “trying things out”. That there’s still room for Sand and this thing between them.

He follows that discredit with a comment that can be read as direct criticism and comparison of Sand’s own “just friends” boundaries during their time together:

“At least he let me cross that friend zone line.”

At least HE did, at least HE let me try.

Sand returns this thinly veiled snide comment with a double entendre of his own:

“Good. You can finally end the secret crush.” To which I don’t think Ray picks up on Sand’s true meaning until Sand finishes with “Such a waste of time, right?”

THERE. RIGHT THEN. THAT MOMENT is when Sand’s true feelings finally become clear for Ray.

Because why would Ray’s secret crush be a waste of time if it worked out and he is now with Mew???

Sand is talking about himself… and Ray knows it.

You can literally see the lightbulb moment clear on Ray’s face. Sand likes him, Sand has a crush on him, Sand doesn’t want them to be only friends, and possibly never did.

But Ray didn’t know that before, how could he? And how unfair that he finds out now, finds out RIGHT as Sand is telling him that he’ll end his secret crush on Ray, and that he’ll let Ray go now that Ray has Mew?

All of the times Sand said he would never take Ray as his boyfriend or lover - insisted that they stay friends and nothing more. Possibly even hurting Ray with these words during the brief time when Ray was properly trying to move on from Mew.

And now that the man Ray has loved for years is giving him a chance - now that it’s seemingly too late, Ray is figuring out that he was wrong - that Sand did want him, like him, love him.

You can see the wheels turning in his head - trying to figure out his next move - and in that moment, he can see himself in Sand. Because at the end of the day, Ray understands loneliness and rejection better than anyone.

And so finally, he decides to next ask Sand the question he wishes someone would ask him:

“Are you okay?”
