I drew this cute little wolf spider the other night really quickly after reading WAY too many "kill it with fire" comments... sometimes they get tiresome. I'm sure many can relate.
I know this isnt my typical style but this was done quickly to convey an important message.

City Lights: Chapter 1
The horizon was illuminated with light. It was the illusion of sunrise that cast only shadows in its fallen wake. Alleyways spit what was left from the depression of the day down over his head. It left its mark in the form of a dark halo. A smoke ring of shadow that only he could see. That only he could feel. And it was this reason, this one reason as to why Hellboy was now leaning up against the brick of an abandoned building down town. It was safe this time of night, night crescendoing into the sins of morning. No one would see him, never mind notice him. Bright red skin barely showed up as dark maroon in these hours. He leaned back a little deeper into the clay of the brick. It scratched the fabric of his brown duster and he let out a sigh. Despite this, he was careful. He only watched this world from above, scaling rooftops out of sight from mortal eyes.
It was around this time that he saw her. He saw her every morning around this time. She walked the same path, traveling the same way. She was a tall girl, dark hair and dark eyes. Eyes that always looked tired, eyes that always looked sad. He had noticed her only now, and no other time before. She was the only human that he had seen during these hours besides the waitress that paced back and forth in the twenty-four hour diner window. He never bothered to catch her name, he had to be inconspicuous. He had to remain a shadow.
But today was different. At first he thought it were another illusion caused from the city lights and the evening fog. But his eyes did not deceive him. Misty wings cascaded down her back. Not quite white but a dirty grey. She didn't seem to notice them though they seemed quite long, the ends brushing the pavement as she walked. Just as she had the day before, she entered the diner. Normally, this was the time that Hellboy headed back to the Bureau and yet today, he sat on the edge of the abandoned building and listened.
She walked to the middle booth, small hands opening the diner window as the waitress walked over to her. "What'll it be today, June?" June? Like the month, was that her name? He smiled at the simplistic beauty of the name.
"Oh, just a chocolate malt shake, please." June was polite while she stared at the seat across from herself. Her dark eyes seemed more sad now than when he saw her walk in. It dawned on him and Hellboy frowned. Loneliness. She was lonely.
"So help me, Juniper, if that's all you eat." the waitress warned. Juniper? So her name was Juniper and June was just a nickname. Juniper like the berry, like the herb. Rustic and sweet. Slightly tart, he wondered if the personality was to match. Juniper shrugged her shoulders, begrudgingly so.
"Can I get an order of chocolate chip pancakes with whip cream and fresh raspberries?" Now that sounded delicious. The waitress nodded, accepting the order and disappearing to the back. Juniper sat alone and this killed Hellboy. If only there was a world where it would be okay for him to walk in there and join her. As he watched, the wings did not dissipate. And still she did not seem to notice. Was this only something he could see? And if so, why?
It wasn't long before the girl, Juniper paid for her meal and left. He watched as she laid her money on the table and pulled the napkin underneath. What was she doing? Hellboy jumped to the next rooftop with ease as he watched her turn a corner. That's when he heard a sound. It was the most painful wail he had ever heard. A cry that cut him so deep in his soul, he reached up and wiped the tears from his own eyes. He looked over the edge of the building as she leaned back against the building parallel to his. Tears crowded her dark eyes. What had happened? What had gone so wrong to cause this woman so much pain? He wish he knew.
Juniper pulled out the napkin from her pocket. At first he thought she was going to use it to wipe her eyes until he saw it. The metallic glint of metal in the moonlight. Jaw tight, teeth locked as he watched her roll up the sleeve of her jacket. The flesh of her forearm was a shade or two lighter than the skin of her face. Hellboy wasn't sure he could stomach this let alone allow it to continue. He barely knew this woman and yet he felt compelled to save her from this darkness that now loomed over her. The wings that once appeared as mist now began to grow more solid and bright. As if she were an angel. Golden eyes widened. Hellboy jumped from the rooftop, landing on his feet to which she did not take notice. She pressed the sharp side to her wrist. The faded glow from her wings showed the scars to which illuminated her skin. Much like the city lights casting an illusion of sunlight on the night sky.
"Stop, kid." he called to her. She paused, beads of ruby red dotted her wrist. She looked up at him. He could now see that her eyes were a very dark grey. Charcoal. She didn't scream when her eyes fell upon his fallen demonic form. She didn't gasp and try to snap a picture. She only paused before she closed her eyes, the metallic glint shifting in movement once more. "Juniper, please stop." He crouched down to her level as she sank down the brick wall to the wet asphalt. He reached out, gently laying his hand on her forearm. Fingers delicately splayed across the base of her arm closer to her elbow. The metallic glint of the knife, her left hand gripping the handle and the ruby red beads that now were trailing down her silk flesh in small rivers of red were all still exposed.
She looked up at him, "You're... Hellboy." Her voice confirmed in affirmation, not shock and not surprise. Perhaps it was the crimson of his flesh that gave himself away or maybe she had recognized his muscular demon shape from the news. And still, her saddened charcoal eyes look at him with zero judgement. And still, her hand calmly continued to pull the metallic glint across her skin.
"Yeah," he said before moving his other hand over her own, halting the silent slaughter of self destruction. "Please stop." Still, she looked at him. Sad grey eyes hell bent on this. Why this? Why her? He knew nothing about her. Nothing. Maybe she did deserve it, but then again he couldn't see any reason in her eyes to do such a thing.
Juniper paused momentarily, letting go of the knife handle. She felt dizzy and not just from the loss of rubies. The loss of her heart which was captivated and stolen by the demonic public enemy. With good intentions and poor public execution stood Hellboy. Golden eyes of reason stared back at her. He had answered her cries when the church only seemed to respond in silence. Stone walls, stained glass and hymns of silence only left her with more questions. She sat back in defeat, letting the knife fall from his hand into her lap.
"Thank you," he said as he removed the metallic glint from any light source. Its sins tonight did not deserve to be illuminated. Reaching back, the sound of torn fabric brought attention to Juniper's fading grey eyes. She was in and out of awareness, whether it was from shock or blood loss, he couldn't tell. Maybe it was both. She tuned in momentarily to watch him tear a piece of his black shirt and wrap it around her arm. Effortlessly cradling her in his arms, her wings which had returned to the shimmer of dirty, grey mist brushed against his flesh. It left a dusting of glimmering powder which gave the small spot on his red skin a pearlescent hue. Hellboy knew not what this was, or what this all meant. But he was sure his father and Abe would want to know. And perhaps they would have the answers he needed. The answers she sought.

“I want to be defined by the things I love Not the things I hate not the things I’m afraid of not the things that haunt me in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.”
Hey fellow swiftes! I’m a poet and I wrote this inspired by the genius that is our queen and my brutal battle with Lyme Disease, with a dose of Khalessi, this is my story through metaphor. Let me know what you think🫶 I present to you my midnights✨
Darkness and Fire
When I was just a girl
The world revovled in the palm of my hands
Every direction I went
Was filled with loved ones andfriends
At the height of my success
I shared all of my best
Ensuring they too were equallyblessed
The darkness settled in so young
First it took my legs then my lungs
I looked around for hands to hold
A caring thought, some words of gold
But silence is all I found here
With no gifts to give
I watched my worth disappear
The few the real the steady
Their light means more than it all
As they held me so close
Throughout my greatest of falls
I hit the rocks
With a blinding blow
Somehow still surviving
With jagged breath I whispered slow
I can not, will not, must not go
I want to lay here in the blackness
And forget that I was abandoned
In this deepest darkest hole
to the universe I demanded
I beg of you to vanish, let me go..
But my lights of love glowed aroundme
And swiftly spoke right back
Strong and clear I heard them say
Now it’s time you must attack
We won’t leave you on the ground
But instead reset your bones
With no one else around
We will carry you home
Get ready for combat prepare
for the fight
Create that heavenly life
That you dream of each night
Where you are safe and healthy
Happy, free, and loved
These will be your gifts
Bestowed from above
Let go of the hurt you carry
Karma will deal with those wrongs
I know how you are weary
and the battle rages on and on
But you were forged from
burning flames
Remember how you fiercely blaze
You must get up now from that
cold floor
Stand once again so tall and brave
Cleanse yourself in this hurricane
Find the peace you’ve been
Searching for
Return atop that majestic precipice
And release again your mighty roar.

Symptoms that aren't talked enough about with fungal infections/autoimmune diseases are derealization/depersonalization, nightmares, hot flashes, brain fog, body aches, memory loss, fatigue, anxiety, IBS, general gut/digestive issues, growing food intolerances, etc. Just because you don't have the most common symptoms doesn't rule out some of these diseases.
And I always recommend getting a second opinion if you have even the slightest hunch that your healthcare provider may have misdiagnosed. It's your body and your health, so listen to your gut.
My mom and I had all of the symptoms listed above, and more. One doctor diagnosed us with anxiety, her reason being "well, my son has some of those symptoms and he has anxiety." Anxiety, depression, and even mood swings can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying condition, which was the case for me and my mom. We chose to find help through a different healthcare provider who dug deeper. She found borrelia burgdorferri (lyme), candida, mold, blastomycosis. My mom had so many I can't remember them all (damn memory loss lol.) Since we had untreated lyme for such a long period of time, we still have toxins that are either still in our system or trying to get in, so we're still on treatment. Anyway, just watch out for sneaky symptoms like the ones listed above. A vast majority of healthcare workers care about your well being and would either recommend you to a specialist or would be willing to dig a little deeper into the root cause of your symptoms. At the end of the day, do what you feel is best for your health and well-being.

Chronic Pain Awareness month 1 am musings
A friendly reminder that doing anything fun in a disabled body takes SO much planning... (bathrooms? stairs? water? contingency plan for overheating? getting ADA seating wristbands just in case I can't be on my feet for a whole show? masks? profilactic COVID nasal spray? snacks? ear plugs?)
But most importantly HELP.
My people are so often silently caretaking and making things easier on me as I move through a day, even when I "seem fine," to save my limited capacity for as much joy as I can (read: standing, able bodied ppl loveeeee to stand lol).
Pacing, lots of water, breaks, stretching, sitting things out to rest instead, and slow-but-steady reconditioning are what makes doing all of the things possible for me right now. I am relieved to have figured out how to live better in a body that is often hostile over this last year or two, and am grateful af for my community, but DANG it's a lot of work to be alive and thriving under capitalism.

Realizing now that I have Lyme disease, it leaves a lot of questions. Maybe this is what has been causing my fibromyalgia? Maybe that extremely rough psychological stuff I’ve been dealing with lately are related? Learning about Lyme is like a lightbulb going off…
2 years ago I found a bullseye rash, never saw a tick and was treated with doxycycline. Lyme can become chronic in some people and you can have what is called a resurgence which is what I am dealing with now. I don’t believe I got a new fresh tick bite.
Lyme disease can cause so many symptoms that look like other disorders and is not easily detected on blood panels and other testing methods. I was tested over a year ago and since it was negative I assumed that meant I didn’t have the disease. Well now I know that is not true. I have questioned since then if lyme was a possibility… like I can’t even tell you how many times it crossed my mind, but since I’m not a doctor, I just kept pushing it off and saying well my doctor told me I have fibromyalgia… I do but there’s a reason for it!!
The good thing that comes out of this is antibiotics can help me greatly and if things start to flare again, I know what it is and can ask for help!
When I was at the hospital the doctor asked if I wanted to be part of a Lyme disease study they are doing through Dalhousie University and I said YES OF COURSE! So now, like I always do, I will become an advocate for this disease.
My message for everyone is simple:
1. Please be careful and check yourselves for ticks! I know it’s easy to forget especially since they can be the size of a grain of pepper but do everything you can to avoid this disease can I can tell you, it is absolute hell! Nova Scotia is dealing with a really high volume of tick bites and Lyme now and also other bacteria borne illnesses are popping up too. I witnessed at least half a dozen people at the ER in Lunenburg yesterday who were there for them as well! It is truly rampant and I share this as a warning.
2. Never stop fighting and advocating for yourself. I know that also isn’t easy especially with our crumbling healthcare system but if you believe something is wrong, don’t stop asking questions! Don’t stop looking for an answer! Listen to your body and trust yourselves!

I’ve been using my CPAP a lot more and it’s helping me sleep better. This is a nasal mask, which I’m using because my nose is sore from the other mask. I have 90 stops of breathing per hour and actually have to use my CPAP a lot. Sleep apnea can be very dangerous if you have many apneas (aka you stop breathing). From headaches to strokes and even death. It’s no joke. But I do look funny!

After so much love for my wolf spider, I have decided to start a small cartoon drawing series called "Love for the Unloved." Featuring different animals and fun facts.
This is "Big Mama" and she would like me to tell you a bit about Opossum. ❤❤
Fact - Opossum RARELY are able to get rabies. This is due to their super low body temperature. The rabies virus can not survive these low temperatures.
Unsolved Mystery - Opossum eat ticks! There have been several studies on this. One study took Opossum and introduced ticks to them. The Opossum ate them all and got their fur shiny and clean. Another study took 30 Opossum out of the wild and studied their stomach contents. No ticks or tick larvae were found... so in conclusion... more studies need to be done on this to have a true conclusion. 😂

Hi, this is a little hard to say on here but in March I was diagnosed with stage three leukaemia which is why I haven’t been writing as much as I used to and why I had my hiatus through March. It’s been very hard on me which goes without saying lol and is a huge bummer after recovering from Lyme disease, good thing there’s free healthcare in Canada! This is your sign to get that mole or lump checked out and be aware of cancer symptoms so you can catch it early on with you or a loved one. It’s unpredictable and cruel and I pray that none of you will ever have to endure it. I will still be writing but I likely won’t be able to publish my fics as fast as I used to so I kindly ask you to be patient and this is likely the only time I will speak on my illness until I get any big updates. Thanks for reading.

Since there's been discussion and concern about ticks on some of my ecology posts, here's my quick and dirty Informative Post about ticks. Please note that this doesn't get into "what to do if a tick bites you" which is already widely covered by reputable online sources that know more than me. Anyway:
Ticks can give you loads of diseases besides just Lyme disease. Don't mess around with them, basically.
Some people think "a short lawn will keep away ticks." This is FALSE—you can still get ticks from short grass and you still need to be aware of them in a mowed lawn
Some areas have way more ticks than others and this can be very localized (they tend to like valleys and wet areas, and need a supply of hosts)
More wildlife doesn't mean more ticks necessarily, a wide variety of wild animals also eat ticks
the thing about opossums eating lots of ticks is actually a myth that got started by one badly designed study, though. Don't worry opossums, we still love you
Ticks do not "jump" onto you and they do not descend down on you from trees. They hide in grass, bushes and other low-to-the-ground foliage and wait for warm-blooded creatures to brush against the foliage. You get ticks by brushing against weeds and undergrowth. This means that a scrubby, overgrown field poses significantly more risk than a mature forest that's relatively clear of undergrowth (in general). If a tick gets on your head, it usually crawled all the way up there
Yes, ticks usually don't immediately bite you when they get on you, instead they will crawl for a long time trying to find a good place to bite. This means if you check regularly you can often get them before they bite you.
Check yourself for ticks when you come inside from being outdoors. They like to bite in sheltered places, so that means hair, armpits and nether regions in particular. A mirror helps but also use touch, if you feel a weird bump that's like a pimple or a scab, that may actually be a tick. It's not weird to ask "hey is this a tick?" if you feel something on the back of your head
however it's a good idea to check regularly when you're outside too. If you brush up against bushes, just give yourself a quick once-over to see if you have picked up anything. I do this habitually all the time. If you feel a Weird Itch do not ignore it
Wear long pants and socks if you're going to be wading through weeds and brush. Light colors if possible, so you can see them if they're crawling on your clothes. Time to invest in breathable fabrics!
Minimize the amount of wading through weeds and brush you do though, especially around wet areas. try to big step through it instead of just cutting/crashing through it
You can also get ticks if you have pets that go outside, bring one in, finish feeding and then fall off onto your furniture or something. Ticks can also stick around in your laundry or on your shoes (I found one on the outside of my shoe just a couple days ago).
bug spray is a good idea, use it
Dry ice attracts ticks, bc it's pure carbon dioxide which is what ticks use to find hosts. You can make traps for ticks using dry ice. Dry ice on a camping trip=bad idea.
I will add more stuff if I think of it but this is what I have right now
