I feel like BFRB’s are REALLY common despite being so stigmatized, and I wanted to see how many of you are out there :)

dear skin-pickers, nail-biters, people with dermatillomania/trichotillomania, people with any kind of skin condition or BFRB:
you are not dirty. you are not gross, disgusting, or unclean for it. you are not less worthy of appreciation or affection. you are not less beautiful. you are not weird or disturbing for it. you deserve every bit of love there is to give. i see you, i know you, i understand how hard it is to stop. everybody who has, i'm so proud of you. everybody who can't, i'm on your side, and you will get there someday. every single one of you deserves all the love in the world and i am sending as much of it as i can to you now <3

Who’s your favourite oc? And what makes them your fav?
Matillo! I've drawn him the most, he always has different hair and such but he's always him in my brain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was originally a vent character I drew that was the embodiment of my struggle with trich/dermatillomania (symbolized in his fingertips and scars on his shoulders, his hair in most drawings is not his own) He's a betrayed man who refuses himself to be close to anyone again, undying, a bit of a monster. He wallows in his own pain and suffering and it's definitely to avoid being vulnerable addressing any of it. He's basically my one bad boy. I mean monster kind of literally, he's kind of like a Cronenberg monster. His flesh can flay itself, unfurl and consume other organisms. He's my favorite because he comes from my really raw, angry, worst years of my life and is a good reminder in a way of how far I've come! He's my safe spot to put all my anger from trauma into. He'll be happy again someday, I've been thinking of this recently.

a tip for people with trichotillomania: if youre looking for an alternate activity to replace hair pulling, you should consider getting into textile art, something like weaving - especially forms of weaving that you can do anywhere:
crochet
lacemaking (crochet, but smaller)
hand weaving
weaving on a hand loom
ive been struggling with trich for a long time and none of the many alternate activities and stim toys ive tried have helped or stuck for long - but weaving has been a huge game changer for me because by weaving i'm giving myself the "pulling" sensation that i'm seeking without pain or shame, PLUS i get the satisfaction of having a lovely art piece at the end!
despite what the internet will tell you, weaving is actually very cheap and easy to pick up if youre physically able to do it, have access to some kind of yarn, thread, paper, or grass, and if youre willing to make mistakes.
this fall/winter im planning on making a guide on how to get started weaving for beginners, and i'll post it on here when i do. in the meantime feel free to send me questions and i'll respond when i can :)
terms to google if you're interested:
weaving in the round
picture frame loom
peg loom diy nails
diy friendship bracelet cardboard loom
basic crochet chain (you'll probably want a video for this, it's hard to communicate crochet through words or pictures)
other forms of textile art that might help:
knitting
sewing (clothing, stuffed animals, curtains, bedding...)
embroidery (you can make patches!)
rug making
quilting (most people nowadays use a sewing machine, but you can do it by hand too!)

Shoutout to people with trichotillomania. People with bald spots. People with patchy or no eyebrows. People with thin or no lashes. People with sores on their faces, their scalps, their legs, their arms, or everywhere. People who pull consciously, subconsciously, or both. People who can't swim or wear certain clothes because of trichotillomania. People whose trichotillomania causes them pain. People's whose trichotillomania doesn't. People who pull 24/7, people who don't or barely pull anymore. People who want to get better and people who don't. People who visibly have it and people who don't. People who are open about their trichotillomania, and people who aren't. You're doing amazing however you handle it. You are beautiful regardless of your hair and how you feel about it. You are beautiful regardless your urges. You are beautiful and worthy of love. I'm proud of you.

I am an ouroboros
~ A poem about mental illness, healing and snakes
Inspired by the works of @headspace-hotel and @tamiscolaris
~
I'm not really sure the point I'm trying to make in this; it's more an exploration of my own mental health, how I view it, and, in turn, how I view myself

as an autistic person with OCD, sensory issues are a whole other hell for me.
It’s washing the dishes with gloves and a face mask so the smell and sensation doesn’t make you want to throw up
It’s the feeling of wanting to rip every item of clothing off your body and hover in mid air so nothing can touch you
It’s having to sprint to the bathroom after touching a piece of old chewing gum stuck under a desk because it’s like you can feel the bacteria slowly crawl up your fingers
It’s using half a tube of hair gel just so that there isn’t a single strand touching your neck or face
It’s having a screaming crying panic attack because there’s too much noise
It’s scrubbing your face raw to remove makeup because even if you’ve washed your face five times it still feels like it’s there deep in your pores
It’s washing your hands after the shower because they “feel dirty”
It’a individually plucking every single hair of fuzz off the side of your face with tweezers until your skin burns
It’s wearing clothing inside out all the time because of tags or seams
It’s feeling sick because you ate something with the wrong aftertaste
It’s clawing off your own skin with your nails because it has to be smooth with no scabs
My rituals, compulsions and routines dictate my life, and it really fucking sucks sometimes. To all my friends out there having a rough time, my heart goes out to you. You’re not alone.

happy disability pride month to people with BFRB’s (body focused repetitive behaviors) like dermatillomania, trichotillomania, nail biters, etc
BFRB’s are so hard to spread awareness and positivity for because, at least for me, mentioning skin-picking, hair-pulling etc can often just be triggering 😩 but know there’s no shame, and they’re SO much more common than you think. I have so many ADHD friends come up to me later and say “YOU have trich too??” and like. It’s so nice knowing we’re not alone in this, it just doesn’t get talked about often.

shoutout to ppl with trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder). love yall. remember you’re valid whether or not you have significant/noticeable hair loss and whether or not your hair loss is easy to hide. you’re valid whether you choose to hide your hair loss or not. you’re valid no matter what you look like. i hope everyone reading this who pulls their hair can get to a place where their pulling does not cause them any distress. sincerely, someone with trichotillomania

bfrb's are so funny, like "you perceive a flaw? make it worse." ok cool, thanks. impeccable logic there. this will absolutely not cause potentially life long problems.

Idk where else to put this but I just need to let y'all know. If you have any BFRBs, I really can't recommend NAC enough. I have trichotillomania, dermatillomania, and dermatophagia and they have gotten SO bad recently. Especially the trich. My psychiatrist said he saw a study that said taking N-acetyl cysteine or NAC tablets help, but none of his clients have tried it so he told me to let him know if it works.
I've only been on them for 3 weeks and I have seen such major difference, I'm pulling and biting and picking way way way less frequently now. Sometimes I feel like I go a whole day without it. I feel like I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. It's a supplement so you don't need a prescription, I got a bottle for $8 at The Vitamin Shoppe. I take 1200 mg daily but I see some people say they need to take 1800-2400 for it to help.
After feeling out of control for so long I feel like I'm finally gaining some semblance of control back and I feel a lot happier and more confident. Now I just have to wait for everything to grow back lol. But please look into it if you haven't found anything else that works!
