TOP 30 BL'S OF 2023

It's that time again! The end of 2023 is here, and 2024 is upon us! Once again, we were blessed with some truly amazing BL series and I have tried my hardest to rank them all. I could only narrow it down to 30 this time cuz there were so many good ones. If a BL is not listed, it probably means I haven't watched it yet, but it is likely on a "for later" list.

GOD TIER 10/10

1. The Eighth Sense (KOREA) Absolutely ADORE this series, it was so well done. Beautiful filming and locations, each episode felt very different in terms of setting, the pacing was nice, and the chemistry was really good too between the main pairing. It was great to get some nice kissing moments as well. Def. one of the best KBL's I've seen ever and easily fits into my top 5 BL's of all time.

2. I Cannot Reach You (JAPAN) One of Japan's best series imo. Very cute storyline, I found both characters extremely likable and fun. I love their cute friendship and subtle build up. I really enjoyed watching this one.

3. My Personal Weatherman (JAPAN) Another great one from Japan, with lots of high heat scenes. Parts of the storyline were a little confusing to me at times but I think a change of scenery could have benefited the series, but regardless, I still really enjoyed it week to week.

4. Kiseki Dear to Me (TAIWAN) Probably my favorite Tawain BL ever after We Best Love. I mainly just loved the chemistry between the two couples, they were both really fun to watch and had wonderful chemistry as well as lovely kissing scenes. Def excited to rewatch this one in the future.

5. Our Dating Sim (KOREA) It's hard to believe this was from 2023, but I recently rewatched the whole thing and it held up! It was a very fun and cute series, and the build up with the main pairing was so well done. It really felt like the writers took their time with this series.

TOP TIER 9/10

6. Stay With Me (CHINA) Shocking to see a chinese series on this list, but this is one of my all time favorite BL series. Some people might argue that it isn't BL, but I highly disagree. We got a few "cheek" kisses and most romantic scenes were heavily implied but for me, it was still worth the watch. The ending was rough to say the least, and I really hope we get a season 2 to sort of rectify that, but regardless, I really loved it.

7. My School President (THAILAND) Another series that feels like it was SO long ago, but is def. at the top of my list for Thailand. Gemini/Forth's chemistry was on point and I loved the cute moments and subtle build up in this one.

8. A Shoulder to Cry On (KOREA) My only critique with this series is the lack of a kissing scene. I know for some people that isn't important, but to me it is and I was a bit frustrated to get nothing after such incredible build up, but regardless, the series was really nice and I loved the tension between the main two characters.

9. City Boy Log (KOREA) This one is still ongoing and not quite a BL series technically, but its scripted, and we get lots of BL moments, so I will count it in my list. I am loving the web style filming of this series and both couples a lot. I hope the main pairing gets the opportunity to be in an actual series together.

GREAT 8/10

10. Utsukushii Kare 2 (JAPAN) Sadly haven't been able to see the movie just yet, but the 2nd series was pretty well done. Not as enjoyable for me as season 1 but I still really enjoyed watching the main pairing navigate their relationship.

11. Never Let me Go (THAILAND) One of the better series from Thailand this year imo. I really liked the chemistry between pondphuwin and the episodes were packed with some pretty interesting storylines and build up, it was very fun to watch.

12. Ameiro Paradox (JAPAN) I've seen some people hate on this series, but personally I loved it. I found the chemistry between the leads to be super strong and I loved the build up to them recognizing their feelings. The kissing scenes were great as well. There were a few blah plots but overall I really enjoyed it.

13. Moonlight Chicken (THAILAND) Something about this series felt a bit more mature to me and it was a nice change from some of the cheesier bl's that try so hard to be funny? I really loved all the pairings in this series and the storyline was nice.

14. Tokyo in April (JAPAN) For me this one started out great but then kinda lost me near the end. I did love most of the storyline but other parts were super frustrating to watch. I enjoyed the manga a bit more I think? But still, it was nice.

15. Bed Friend (THAILAND) Loved this one on first watch but on rewatch it was just okay for me. I think some of the plots were just over-dramatic and too depressing. But the friends with benefits plot was well done and the chemistry between the main two was really strong. It was fun.

16. A Breeze of Love (KOREA) I might have enjoyed this one a bit more had I seen the eps slower. Because I binged it's hard to get a good grasp on it but I did really like it. I liked the chemistry between the main couple and there was a sweetness to it I enjoyed.

17. Love Class 2 (KOREA) I think I slightly preferred the overall storyline of season 1, but in this one I preferred all the couples. For me that was the biggest draw. It was a tad bit confusing at first, but then it started to come together near the middle. Not the absolute best from Korea but enjoyable.

Good 7/10

18. Bump up Business (KOREA) Great chemistry between the leads but unfortunately the plot fell a bit flat for me. I feel like they could have done so much more with it. The kiss was also extremely weak, but that was expected. It was a nice series to binge, but not one of my favs this year.

19. Destiny Seeker (THAILAND) Parts of this one were really odd and I think part of my issue was having wonky subs, but regardless, I really enjoyed the series and especially the chemistry between the main pairing. Loved watching their story build, their banter was so fun. I also liked the side pairing but wish they had a bit more focus.

20. Why R U Korea (KOREA) This one did not remind me of the OG at all, which is fine, but overall I found this series to be a tad slow. There were good and bad moments.

21. Love Mate (KOREA) Some of the KBL's this year get a bit confusing and I mix them all together... this is one that sort of got lost in the shuffle for me and I would need to rewatch to give a better opinion on it but I know I did enjoy it.

DECENT 6/10

22. HiStory 5 (TAIWAN) Sadly didn't enjoy this season of HiStory as much as past seasons but it was okay. I think it had some good moments but overall left me a bit underwhelmed.

23. The New Employee (KOREA) Didn't love this one as much as others have seemed to. I didn't find the chemistry to be that strong and I also am not fond of office romances, but it was okay.

24. Dangerous Romance (THAILAND) This one was forgettable but again, had some enjoyable moments. I think I liked it more in the beginning rather than the end.

25. If It's With You (JAPAN) Sweet series that simply just fell flat for me because it just felt too short so I couldn't really get invested in it. But it was cute.

26. My Story (FILO) This one was good, I liked both pairings a lot and there were some decent kissing scenes, but there were also a lot of cringey moments and moments I had to fastforward. For The Philippines I think it was one of the better series this year, but it's not at the top of my list.

27. Sing My Crush (KOREA) Another KBL that is so quick that you can binge in one night... this one didn't deliver for me as much as it did for others. The chemistry was good and it was sweet but I just found myself a bit bored of it. Still cute tho.

28. The Director Who Buys Me Dinner (KOREA) The plot is weird AF and I am not a big fan of like historical past lives romance type of plots but I did enjoy the chemistry between the main two. It might be a bit higher if the ending wasn't so weird...

29. Starstruck (KOREA) Another KBL that is a bit forgettable to me but from what I remember I enjoyed it.

30. Bon Appetit (KOREA) See above. lol.

Honorary mentions: These were good but not quite good enough for my list. I liked them but had small issues with them. Either cheesey or boring plots, or the chemistry was lacking for me. Also they are in no particular order:

1. His Man 2 (KOREA) - Not BL at all, but a reality series which was AMAZING. LOVE LOVE LOVED the ending pair... but couldn't put it on the main list because it's not scripted.

2. Minato’s Laundry 2 (JAPAN) -season 1 was amazing, this one didn't hold up. Hated how awkward they were as a couple and it just felt too unrealistic to me. Regardless, i still love the chemistry between the main two and liked seeing them again.

3. Hidden Agenda (THAILAND) - love joondunk and wish they would get a better storyline. This plot was all over the place but the chemistry was there. The kisses were top tier!

4. Only Friends (THAILAND)- i did love the messiness of this one and there were some fun pairings with hot scenes, but overall I felt the SL was a bit chaotic and some characters never really grew. I wish they had leaned into the sexy/messiness of it a tad bit more tbh.

5. Stay by My Side (Taiwain) - cute but a bit forgettable. I did enjoy the chemistry a lot in this one tho.

6. You Are Mine (Tawiain) - same as above, except the pairing wasn't as exciting for me.

7. Our Dining Table (JAPAN) - i know everyone loves this one and it was very cute and sweet, but a bit too slow for my taste.

8. End of the World With You (JAPAN) - some interesting plots and fun to watch, but overall a bit messy and problematic at times? lol.

9. Til the World Ends (THAILAND) - see above.

10. Jack O Frost (JAPAN)- decently cute series but the tone of it was a bit too depressing for me.

11. The Day I Loved You (FILO) -started great but was too emotional/sad for me after a few eps in.

12. Unintentional Love Story (KOREA) - seems a lot of people loved this one but it wasn't really my cup of tea. I found the plot very slow and the main couple was kinda bland imo. But I am willing to rewatch it and give it another chance soon.

13. Between Us (THAILAND) - technically this started in 2022 but it finished in 2023, so I'll include it. It was okay but not great. Much better series for bounprem but still found myself a bit bored.

Watched these ones in 2023 but they didn't make much of an impact in me. They had good and bad bits but to me, mostly bad. lol (No particular order)

Apollo:

Favorite thing about them: I know it kind of applies to all the MCs, but he is sooo... cringefail. And I love that about him. Like idk he's just so sweaty and vaguely unwell all the time and I think it's charming that he's constantly convincing himself he's Totally Cool Totally Fine Just Absolutely Fine. I also like that he can't help but be kinda mean. Not that he is a mean character, just that he has the most shit-tier filter when it comes to talking to people. I love how often he says shit he shouldn't to people, it's funny as hell to me. I love him Least favorite thing about them: He's really boring until Spirit of Justice. At least to me personally. He's like cardboard in AJ, and I don't... care about his arc at all in DD lol. Spirit of Justice may have slapped another backstory onto this bitch, and while it's silly, I think it works the best because now at least we have SOME understanding of his background. And I like his dynamics with the Khura'in crew a lot. Favorite line: idk... I don't really pay mind to people's lines. But the bit in Turnabout for Tomorrow where he says he finally trusts Athena is fun. I also like that bit in 6-5: "If you committed a crime, you'd better be ready to do the time. Be you a priest, a saint, a queen or a god." That goes pretty hard. Like bro he fucking rules during Turnabout Revolution it's crazy, he's the star of that trial for sure. The star he should've been in this trilogy all along. brOTP: Him and Athena are iconic together. I like him and Trucy for sure, but Athena really brings out some great stuff in his personality. They are so damn funny together, and you really get the impression they care about each other a lot despite the constant teasing and the rivalry. OTP: I generally don't ship Apollo with anyone because I headcanon him as aroace, but if I was going to pick a ship, I like Justicykes, I admit. I think it could be a cute ship and they already have a terrific dynamic together. But yeah. nOTP: Since I already said Nahyuta/Apollo when I did Yuty's, I guess barring ships like him and Trucy which are a given for me, I don't really care for Klavier/Apollo because I feel they have no chemistry. Like. At all. Like for anything KRKJFN The writing between them in AA4 is so Nothing to me, so idk, I just don't see it. It's not a bad ship and I understand why people like it, but it didn't click with me-- but it probably also didn't click because I don't particularly like Klavier to begin with. I don't think he's very interesting. Random headcanon: Uhhh idk! Let's see... I do headcanon Apollo as a trans man, and since I also headcanon Yuty as trans, I guess like... I like the idea of them playing games as boys when they were kids because they don't have the language or knowledge to understand why neither of them are particularly happy with being viewed as girls, so it was a little secret thing that they encouraged for each other because it made them happy. They understood when no one else did. And then they reunite 15 years later, see the other has transitioned, and thinks, "That explains a lot" lol. Unpopular opinion: His SOJ backstory is stupid as fuck but I actually also think it's great and the best thing they've done with his backstory so far, especially since they have continued to not tell Apollo and Trucy that they're siblings (though yes, I know, the ending of SOJ implies Thalassa and Phoenix are finally going to tell them). It's the first time I had a good grasp on his background, and I think his dynamic with Dhurke, Nahyuta, and Datz is legit great. Song I associate with them: I don't think I've ever thought about it. Everything is Fine by Qbomb could be good for him, but it's also very intense, probably too much even for him. But I'll go with that. Favorite picture of them: I love his grin, it's adorable

Athena:

Favorite thing about them: Her personality!!! I love how bombastic she is, I love how much emotion they put into her animations and everything. I love how much she cares about people, she's so ride or die and hardworking even when people underestimate her or look down on her. It makes her a really endearing character. I worried if I'd like her when I first started DD, but she's honestly awesome. She's my favorite protag from the new trilogy, though Apollo is not very far behind. Least favorite thing about them: I wish she wasn't so young sometimes. Like I find it weird that the newer games veer so much towards people becoming lawyers fresh out of high school, and even for someone as smart as her, I'm just like... you can't make her 20 at least or something? And I feel like the only reason she's even 18 in DD is because the assistant characters have to be a teen girl. Like. Yknow lol.

I also thought it was kind of annoying how 6-4 kept pushing her being a kid when basically nobody ever talked to her like that before. It felt like they just needed more conflict so threw in suddenly everyone being like "she's just a little BABY GIRL who doesn't KNOW NOTHIN" and I thought it was a touch lame. But not too intrusive, really. At least someone started recognizing she's young as hell, lol. Favorite line: Everything she says is iconic. How am I supposed to pick. Yeah I honestly don't know lol brOTP: Her and Simon are legendary together. Their dynamic is so fuckin funny and endearing to me. It's one of the highlights of DD and the highlight of Turnabout Storyteller. I never knew her and Blackquill were connected before I played DD, albeit I basically never saw anything new trilogy content so it surprised me, but I love them. The siblings of all time OTP: Justicykes, I guess? idk. I don't really ship for her. I'm not even certain what my headcanons for her sexuality are to begin with. I could see her as a lesbian, but I could see her as pan, but I could see her as aro, so on. Her and Juniper is cute too, I just feel like their dynamic isn't fleshed out enough, but that's kinda par for the course in DD. But I can vibe with it. nOTP: Her and Blackquill romantically. Like sorry, but you have fundamentally misunderstood their dynamic. I feel strongly about that. I can't explain it, but it really feels like it misses the point of their dynamic and what makes the dynamic great, but idk. Also it's just Weird for a lot of reasons. Random headcanon: (guy who makes every character he likes trans voice) I Think She's Trans. Also love her being taller than Apollo, I'll go with that hc like the rest of us. Unpopular opinion: I dunno. I think she's a mixed bag to a lot of people because of how DD pivoted so aggressviely away from AA4's vision and direction, which makes it tough for me to determine what an unpopular opinion with her would be, beyond that, like, she really needs her own game. I'd say DD is her game, but we need one where she's in the driver's seat and leading the story on her own. I don't want to see Phoenix or Apollo helping her anymore I'm sick of it KRKF

In your opinion are Taylor’s self-written songs usually better than the ones she wrote with co-writers?

I think it really depends. I joke a lot about how I want her to work with more no-men who will edit her work, but if I’m serious about it I think it’s more WHO she works with and under what circumstances. Other than folklore, I don’t actually know how much she balances that workload and creative contribution and collaboration with the people she works with. and on top of that, sometimes a writing combo produces absolute ass and other times it's one of my favorite songs she's ever written, so it's really hard to make a generalization like that. she actually doesn't write as many songs all by herself in a locked room or whatever as much as people think.

Let's take Lover for example because it's very interesting to me:

-of the 18 tracks, she is the sole songwriter for only 3 songs; Lover, cornelia st, and daylight. Right off the bat, i'm 2/3 for enjoyment, mayyyybe 3/3 if i'm feeling generous, but both daylight and lover are mid to me, cornelia st being the strongest of this trio imo.

-There are 3 main songwriting groups she works with on this album. Joel Little is Group A. Jack Antonoff and friends is group B. And, rather forgettable, Louis Bell and Adam Feeney are Group C. Lets break down the track listing by those subgroups + her solo work.

Group A: The Man, MAATHP, YNTCD, ME!

Group B: Cruel Summer, The Archer, I think He Knows, Paper rings, DBATC, London Boy, Soon You'll Get Better, False God.

Group C: IFTYE, Afterglow, INTHAF

Solo Written: Lover, Cornelia St, Daylight

This is a great example of how difficult it is to say who produces the best work and who produces the worst with her, and if she's better off with co-writers or not. lets get into it.

For group A, i think pretty widely we can agree she didn't work with Joel Little again after this for a reason, so that's perhaps the only simple answer which is that their creative collaboration, for whatever reason, was extremely unsuccessful. However, that's Mr. Pure Heroine producer himself so a good example of how it might not be HIS fault that the songs were bad. nor her fault either, but proof that she alone cannot carry a song to success despite a co-writer, and proof that a cowriter can't save a shit song. he's clearly capable of creating incredible work, and so is she. just only with the right creative alchemy and chemistry which he and taylor clearly did NOT have.

Group B, Mr. Antonoff a troubled figure in my eyes but here really shines. the only song's i don't like in this group are Paper Rings and London Boy, which are also not top tier songs for most swifties and the genpop. not as hated as i hate them, but certainly not top performers. that gives jackie boy a 6/8 hit ratio which is pretty good, AND some of those songs are some of my favorite taylor songs of all time. now the question begs why are these such smashes and creatively compelling songs, and other (ahem later) work so lackluster? i don't know of course, but this might be a good example of how the alchemy and chemistry might be there, but as I said before circumstances are also key. at this point, several things have happened. since their first collaboration on 1989, jack has branched out and produced several genres of music for other artists and has grown his toolset, experience, and his confidence. also, this is taylor and jack's 3rd record together, and their rapport and shorthand and creative energy has likely strengthened and electrified by now to a very goldilocks zone you could say. both of them not exactly on top of the world so they still have something to prove, and they're at a point where they likely understand each other and are energized by each other, but aren't comfortable and complacent. it's hard to say definitively if thats true, but that's certainly how it can be positioned and how the quality of the output can be explained. once again, circumstances and timing!

Group C is very interesting, as i only like one of the 3, INTHAF, however it's weighted so heavily because its, imo, one of the most beautiful, interesting production wise, and completely original works taylor has ever made. This is perhaps a good example of something else that i wish taylor would do more, which is take creative risks and work with people who encourage those risks. Afterglow is more run of the mill for her, so we'll throw that one out. but IFTYE and INTHAF are both very outside the box for her. IFTYE is sung in a predominantly spoken word way, verrrrrry conversational, often speaking off beat. and maybe the only song similar to it is TIWWCHNT, but even then, the cadence is way more freeform and reactionary on IFTYE. while i find that song unsuccessful, that same freeform songwriting structure works WONDERS for INTHAF. the song is more of a 3 part poem, with a repeating single phrase but no real chorus (which she talked about being challenging for her when writing this song), and for miss pop formula that's a bold move. the whole song was an exercise in distilling a song down to only what is most necessary, forcing her to be incredibly purposeful and thoughtful with every word. again, some words are also sung on the downbeats, but they flow seamlessly because the instrumental of this song is just stunning and perfectly paired. also EXTREMELY out of left field and experimental for her. it has steel fucking drums!!!! which you typically find in tropical/Caribbean music which could not be further from her sound. and a trumpet solo!! which comes off almost jazzy that pairs so well with how the lyrics are also that kind of meandering, unstructured jazzy freeform for her. but the real killer is how for once, she holds back lyrically when it comes to scene setting. she's very reserved in what she shares and then lets the instrumental tell the story too. she gives you some information that the song starts with the story of children, but the children's choir comes BEFORE the lyrics start to already lay that thematic groundwork. they carry through the song and at the end, the children's choir doubles as further scene setting for the church where the subjects of the song get married. but even then, before the lyric about church bells comes in YOU HEAR ONE RING IN THE SONG!!! she's purposely holding back lyrically and letting the instruments fill in the gaps of the story, which is a method of songwriting that is almost cinematic in how sound effects and sound scapes tell the story just as much as the lyrics do. it's a great challenge for her as a songwriter and really pushed her creativity, forced her to think differently about what a song can be, and imo it produced phenomenal and completely original (for her) results. Clearly Group C challenged her and pushed her in new directions. the downside of that is with taking creative risks comes a high chance of failure, and while the other 2 songs are not failures totally, they're much less successful. but that's important still!! pushing her is important and it's the only way we get to great creative work that is new and exciting and important, so to me, the failures of Group C are worth it for the delicious success of INTHAF.

As for her solo work, i will say i enjoy Cornelia St. a lot, and Lover and Daylight are ok, but imo they're like almost fully baked. there are aspects of all 3 of them that could be pushed juuuuust a little further towards greatness. clunkiness that could be cleaned up, metaphors and turns of phrased that could be polished just a bit more until they really shine. compared to all 3 groups, clearly her solo work is better than Group A, and some of Group C, but i think falls short of a lot of Group B.

idk. on the whole, i guess i can conclude that her solo work these days, while some of her best work, doesn't seem to quite reach the greatness of work she's collaborated on that truly shines. so to make a broad statement yes, i prefer when she works with someone even just a little bit. i think she has raw, incredible talent and a great mind, but i love even more when people bring out new sides of that mind and that talent and show how much she can do, or help her trim the fat and show us the most seasoned and delicious work she has to offer. but as evidenced by Lover, it's not as clear cut as just she needs to work with someone and those will be better songs always. who and under what circumstances are going to be important and unfortunately impossible to predict. i can only hope that she will take away from folklore's insane success, combined with how it was entirely collaborative in a way she hasn't been in a long time, that creative collaboration that pushes her is a good thing. and she'll try to do more of it because midnights is incredibly creatively stagnant and stale. maybe her partnership with jack is getting stale, too complacent and they know each other too well. comparatively, her work with Aaron on Midnights are the best songs on the album imo. someone new, fresh, from a different world and someone who has the chemistry and alchemy that are hard to find, but the newness of their relationship clearly challenges her again. maybe that too will grow stale and she'll need fresh blood, and so on and so forth. i don't think that's her burning through people or that means she can't write songs on her own, of course not. i just tend to see creative work as greater than the sum of it's parts. it's about all these factors, some intentional and some accidental and circumstantial, coalescing together to produce something truly amazing, and there's no other way to do it. unfortunately it can't be replicated or turned into a factory line. there's an elusive magic to it, lightning in a bottle is how a lot of songwriters refer to it when a great song comes together in the studio. and all i hope for is that no matter how big her ego grows or how comfortable and easy working with the same people over and over can be, she remembers how magical it feels like when she manages to catch it and she will never grow tired of chasing it.

Mini Review - The Blackening (2023)

i really like it (high tier?) 🤔

Quite a Black-ass funny-ass horror, but much more of an interesting Black movie than a horror. Like, the main horror is in the racist murderer at a cabin in the woods. Like,... I'm not even gonna explain that. You either get it or you don't. Which brings me to the main thing I wanna say. This really is for Black people. I wouldn't recommend it for people who aren't in some way "Black" (biracials, getcha ass in here).

I'm serious when I say this isn't for Euros. Like, y'all really shouldn't* watch this unless you were out of the blue invited by Black people or are yourself very involved with Blackness in some way. (whatever dafuq that means) Should full-on Euros who have no actual exposure to Blackness see this movie? Absolutely not. Everything's dangerous in the wrong hands, and some of y'all asses are gonna do the absolute wrong shit with this. Intentionally or not.

for the African Descended

Y'all, this some shit. God damn. So glad I just happened to see this in a small theatre filled to a third with mostly Afros. Got to enjoy the reactions almost as much as the movie. Is it great, though? As a Black movie, yeah. As a horror movie, nah. As a Black horror, yep. As a Black comedy horror, hell yeah. And to be real, I don't think non-Black reviews/opinions/criticisms should even be taken into account for this one. Like, I read 7 recent reviews on Letterboxd before getting to Darryl Buckhanan's and seeing all the convincing I needed. This ain't for everybody. And I'm glad it ain't. Let ma ass be. Real talk,... how many o'y'all would'a failed that shit? 💀

Real talk, I didn't trust this movie to not be for Euros because of the director (Tim Story). Here me out! Of his 23 movies listed on Letterboxd, I've only seen five: Barbershop (2002), Fantastic Four (2005), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Think Like a Man (2012) (they just had to put Rihana’s abuser in this 🙄), and this one. While I enjoyed all of the other four, I 1) haven't seen his other Black-casted works and 2) strongly suspected Shaft (2019) of being made for Euros everytime I saw its preview in theatres. Never bothered to confirm that suspicion, but I don't feel the need to. Fortunately, that review convinced me of this one and I saw it yesterday.

Side Notes:

Would not recommend watching 3Peat Presents: The Blackening - Uncensored before the movie if you're already interested. If you ain't, then go ahead and ask yourself if you want a feature length film inspired by this 4 minute Comedy Central skit. (the answer is yes)

On chapter 22 of Chevalier's Romantic route (aka about to finish the route as a whole), so im going to give some notes, as a sort of review. I may at some point make a youtube video actually reviewing all of the route (as well as my process making the rewrite), but for now this is what you get

(HUGE Spoilers for Chevalier's route ahead, you've been warned)

Their first interaction is awful. That hasn't changed at all from my first review at least.

The following interactions are also very bad since Emma is, you know, deadly afraid of him. But I like seeing Emma being encouraged by Clavis to challenge him.

Gotta be honest, Clavis is the biggest highlight in this route, every time he appears it just makes me love him more (yes, i am biased, why do you ask?)

Cheva's actions and the justification for those are sometimes just... so dumb. Prime example is the ball when he just... humiliates a 17 year old and her father and proceeds to justify it by saying that "they ended the conversation" and didn't let him finish. Like bish, u /srs or /j, i hope its the latter.

The "you are a person" bullshit. Ho-ly crap, Emma you don't need to "fix him", my gods.

Speaking of Emma, I got really mad at her not actually reading the covenant?? Like, I would get it if it happened in other routes, but with Chevalier?? Girl, if you mean to actually give a shit, do things that actually SHOW that you give a shit. Show Chevalier that you actually care about choosing a king (the son of a bitch has been telling you that the belle tradition makes no sense to him, and that he would become king either way, show him that he cannot talk to you like that), and show me, who already knows you're going to end up toghether, that you are fit to become a queen. Training? Sure, that's important, but you are responsible for a whole ass country, PLEASE give me a sign that you have some qualities at least, I beg of you.

On that note, dont you dare tell me that Chevalier never said that Belle (position) was useless from the very begining, i absolutely do not buy it.

Gotta be honest, Chapter 14 (the battle in the village) has to be one of my favourites of this route. Emma realizing that THIS is war, that THIS is King Chevalier's future, is absolutely magnificent. Splendid turning point.

What a shame the conflict is resolved in the WORST WAY POSSIBLE LITERALLY FOUR CHAPTERS LATER, OH MY FUCKING GOD WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT JUSTIFICATION. "I remember the names of those who proved their worth to me" AND????? HOW DOES THAT EXPLAIN WHAT YOU CAUSED??????

The sword to the throat scene was very good tho. Very nice.

The dramatic route was good. Not perfect, I abhor how the clause 99 issue was handled, but other than that not bad.

Also Clavis being in love with Emma in this ending 😙🤌 Sublime, their chemistry was top tier (either that or im a simple simp, which yeah, true, I love my purple leopard)

As for the romantic route, as far as I've read its pretty good. Im not a huge fan of Rio as a secondary love interest, but it makes sense, and I like how he (finally) accepts that Emma is in love with Chev and he reciprocates those feelings, and is willing to stand back and let them be happy (if only Chev himself will admit it)

ALSO THE STAB?!?!??! THE WAY MY MOUTH DROPPED, I PREDICTED SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPENING BUT I WAS SO SHOCKED.

Overall, it wasn't as bad as I remembered it to be. Still bad, VERY bad at points, but I grew an appreciation for it.

Dear Mr. Meta,

Apologies for the length of this "ask," but I've got some things to say/ask to you.

I'm new to Tumblr and wish to say Thank you for being a fun and insightful look in the DB franchise with info and arguments I find thought-provoking. While there are posts that I don't entirely agree with (2 people who don't agree on everything, what a twist!), I respect your stances and don't want to add to the large pile of vulgar insults and hot-headed messages I assume you receive constantly. So thanks for being one of my first bloggers that I follow.

Another, but much bigger thank you to you (as well as to other Tumblr people such as Chestnut Island, SweetEscape Artist, etc.) for opening my eyes to the under dog of the DB series: Krillin. I now have a new mad respect for the man that I never would have imagined to come from me. Now realizing the hardships he went through, the power and skills that are overlooked by most fans, and his essential personality to the core group, I can safely say that I am rooting for him more than the Saiyans (not that I hate the Saiyan characters, but now see they hog the character spotlight, considering they are Toei's bread butter)! Furthermore, how have I been so blind to the greatest ship of this series: K18? They are just so well put together and their moments together make my heart flutter. Just a new found respect for aspects and characters I now have.

Finally, my "ask." For my first ever ask, I want it to be fun. Mr. Meta, alongside Krillin, who would you want to team up with him in a hypothetical scenario/movie/series arc but said partner must be a character that is not from Dragon Ball, but instead any other franchise. For example, my dream team up with Krillin is with the mutant who is the best there is as what he does, but what he does isn't very nice: Wolverine. The reason why: Perhaps some intriguing chemistry between the warrior monk and immortal mutant, the possibility of the two sharing their hardships and find comfort that they are still alive despite the lethal and emotional damage that have been inflicted upon them over the course of their lives. But really, it's mostly because I want to see a short hero team up. Wolverine is 3 in taller than Krillin, but it's not that big of a difference; just give me these two short bad asses kicking butt, working together, and one of them mentioning that being taller is overrated. The what if team up can be with anybody, not just Marvel. What is yours? P.S. I hope my ask let's you know that there are individuals who value your opinions and not just bash them. Here's to enjoying Dragon Ball and saying what comes to our minds, rationally of course.

1. Ah, well, thank you. And welcome. Hopefully, you find your time here enjoyable. 2. Yeah, the hyper-focus on the Saiyans can get a bit old at times. Especially in side media now where even some of the weaker known Saiyans are just elevated to god-tier power with the blink of an eye, and the human characters typically only get involved as jokes or to take on throwaway villains that they realistically are far stronger than now. But I’m happy if any of my posts have helped you appreciate these characters more. :) 3. If I absolutely had to choose: Probably Peter Parker. Those two are a lot more alike than people realize, and seeing that come into play and seeing them interact would be interesting. But it’s not really something I’ve given too much thought, tbh. The more I deep Thor Love and Thunder…the more upset I get. So I’m giving my gripes and thoughts. I’ve seen L&T twice now and this second time actually made me upset because it’s good but I can see the potential this film has to be better. Spoilers below…

The first issue.

I’m tired of Thor trying to find himself ….enough is enough, it’s been 6 films please I’m tired. Let’s have a conversation and story about Thor accepting his role as King bc he honestly said f it, Val you take it with her having no prior qualifications (I know she “ran” New Asgard during Infinity War/Endgame but that happened off screen soooooo where’s the proof). Thor more or less abandoned the people who he was trying to protect in the previous films. He ended Ragnarok becoming King and accepting that even though he didn’t really want to be king (rather didn’t like the way the monarchy was previously ran). We had a whole movie about Thor becoming and accepting the King role for him to not be King…alright Marvel. Also while I love Thor becoming a dad at the end of it, the abrupt-ness of it just doesn’t sit right. How is Jane going to tell Gorr and say Love will be looked after knowing she’s dying without even discussing that with Thor…now Thor is a single unprepared father, who not even 30 mins ago was having a midlife crisis about not being able to find himself. Lastly, you can’t tell me that from Endgame, everyone else (of the OG3) gets a happy-ish ending where they get to “settle down with their partner and family” and all Thor gets is a dead ex gf and a adopted child that he necessarily didn’t want….pleaseeeeee make it make sense.

Second complaint.

The romance element of the film should have been like Netflix’s Someone Great in a sense where the “former couple” is cool with not being back together. Where they loved each other and now it’s time to move on…and *cough cough* looks at Marvel, it’s okay for couples to break up and move on. Because no 1. Jane and Thor do not have the chemistry that screams couple…it screams coworkers. And no 2. Thor spent the precious film flirting with Val. Yes I’m a thorkyrie/thorval shipper but based on the interviews, the deleted scenes, Chris and Tessa’s chemistry in Ragnarok, and Tessa’s acting skills in general, you can’t convince me they wouldn’t be a good couple and that their “romance” wouldn’t be more compelling juxtaposed with Thor wanting to help his “first love” who is sick bringing up old relationship wounds. They also just suit each other, like very complimentary in the same way as T’Challa and Nakia maybe (idk most of the original MCU couples from phase 1 & 2 are not good together at all…just my opinion). Also don’t give me any bs about her being bi, she can still be bi, date women, be with women, and still end up with Thor. Like come on LGBTQ+ representation is more than just gay and lesbian couples. What would have been more compelling was Thor has this ex gf, Jane, who comes back into his life who he didn’t really have closure with who is also dying from cancer who helps him see that he truly is not lost because while he has lost he has also found in the group of people he met in Ragnarok and a connection with Valkyrie.

Third grievance.

JUSTICE FOE GORR. We should have seen this man causing absolute carnage. How is it this man named the God Butcher but we don’t see butcher not one God? This movie also had the potential to clear up some confusion about the tier levels of Gods. Bc Thor is a Norse god but also not a god but an Asguardian alien. The Eternals are the base for the Greek gods but then the Eternals aren’t real. Then the Egyptian gods are actual gods that use humans as avatars. Like let’s unpack that a little bit. Maybe Gorr going on a quest to kill all the gods full serial killer vibes presented like a True Detective or 48 Hours-type thing and Thor and co find out about these different levels of Gods through their murders or takes some time to give exposition about the gods helping clear up and connect the “Cosmic” sector of the MCU phase 4.

Sn:Also what happened to the piece about if a God loses their followers they perish? Am I making that up or no?

Idk. I’m just talking randomly and needed to get that off my chest.

And I didn’t hate the film by any means, it just could have been better. It was a group project where everyone didn’t pull their weight and ultimately turned in an okay project that actually had a lot of potential. The plot was missing character development and the character development was missing plot. What we got was good but there was no purpose for anything cohesively. The film just had a lot going on to and when trying to fit everything in it lost some of its direction. This movie told the right story the wrong way.

I try to keep anime off my main blog, but I need to tell you about three animes that make me absolutely feral.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Attack on Titan, and

Trigun Stampede

FMAB is so highly praised within the anime community and its not hard to see why. It could easily be an action/power-up anime, but it's not. There's so much more that I don't even know how to describe it. It has some of the best female characters I've seen in an anime. It covers grief, loss, war, and more. There is romance but it somehow adds to the story instead of making you cringe away from the show in horror. The story as a whole had me constantly surprised with its reveals. The comedy isn't overdone and never feels forced. And let's just say there's a reason it's my number one and many other's number one as well.

Attack on Titan is probably easier to understand the why behind it. Isayama has irrevocably changed how I see both other shows and the world. I watch shows now in a light that might not have been there, but Isayama changed my brain chemistry and now I can't unsee it. The show started out simple and it could've easily stayed there, but it didn't. Not even halfway through Season 1, we get a part of the story that we never expected. Fast-forward to Season 4 and we learn something that has forever changed how I watch every show from here on out. It went through an animation studio change for the final season and the new studio has delivered a more faithful manga-to-anime adaptation compared to the original studio. The animation through all four seasons is just amazing.

Trigun Stampede was one of the hated animes of 2023, for no good reason!! The animation is above god-tier for being fully CGI (don't knock it 'til you try it). The amount of DETAIL that goes into every action is fucking insane. Studio Orange paid homage to the original 1998 anime while also planning on making a more faithful adaptation. I saw two tumblr posts by someone who analyzed that Vash got animated using proper gun safety and how good of a marksman he is. It's something that could've been glossed over, but Studio Orange said "fuck it" and gave us GOD-TIER animation.

Yeah, more animes than those have made me cry. I cry over Kakashi's backstory in Naruto, but it doesn't give me the absolute need to scream like the three above do. When I say I go absolutely feral over those three animes, I mean I get this pressure in my chest that I feel like I need to scream from how fucking good they are.

If you're thinking about getting into anime, I cannot stress these three enough to at least have them on your watchlist.

oohhh girl another one: TOP FIVE PERIOD DRAMAS (film or tv!!)

Oh that's such a tough fucking GET. but ok. These are my unbiased faves (I will unfortunately be excluding the terror from the running, because it should go without saying that it inherently takes the No. 1 slot- not just for Jared Harris reasons, but for historical accuracy and for Gothic Lit soulmateness), and for the sake of sanity I'm gonna put a cap at period past 100 years (because otherwise it would be way harder for me to choose with stuff like the shape of water in the running- I'm strictly going with the definition of taking place 100 years in the past or more and with the emphasis on fictionalization. ok. lets go)

5. Sense and Sensibility Oh I fucking love Alan Rickman. I always have. I also love Kate Winslett and this adaptation has some lovely nuance to it that I just adore. It's not as overt in its conflict as Pride and Prejudice is but it's beautiful in its nuance regardless. Just a lovely fucking time. 4. 1917 Look. I'm a Tolkien hoe. I was and still am obsessed with LOTR and the beauty and destruction that it embodies as a work conversant with Tolkien's own war trauma. I love that. I have also seen a fair number of war movies, but without a doubt, I don't think a single one of them has been conversant in the beauty and horror of war that inspired writers like Tolkien and C.S. Lewis and T.S. Elliot like this. None of them match this. Not to mention the masterclass in editing and long-form shot filmmaking this is. It's fucking beautiful top to bottom, and the fucking night window scene still gives me fucking chills. 3.BBC Jane Eyre Amazingly I only watched this one a couple weeks ago. Previously I did not know about it, but since I've been on a period drama bender for the sake of my own writing research, this one came up, and I really couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Toby Stevens as Mr. Rochester. I did not think that anything could blow the more recent adaptation of Jane Eyre out of the water, but color me surprised, Toby blew Mr. Fassbender out of the water, and color me surprised!!! I fucking ADORED Ruth Wilson in this as well!!! Honestly she and Toby had so much chemistry that it literally is still making me go insane thinking about it and I have to stop. Honestly I'm having a hard time placing this at no. 3 it really should be no. 2 but I have to have some principal about this.

2. 2005 P&P Look. I hate to be a basic hoe but this movie has always fucking bewitched me body and soul. Is it the best technical adaptation of Jane Austen? Probably not. Is it the most cinematically artful and do I also love Kiera Knightly and Matthew McFadyen? yeah. Also the hand touch is literally the most important maneuver ever committed to film and I will die by that. The way that has provided inspiration enough for an entire lifetime is unquestionably vital.

1. Black Sails What can I say? I love boat boys. Especially Pirates. I have been a pirate bitch since POTC2 came out and I saw it in Las Vegas with my dad, but what Black Sails did for me as a combination not just of literary characters but actual historical pirates, and the queerness among them, is literally fundamental to me as a person. Not to mention the writing poetic, poignant, and god tier, with an extremely socialist bent that I think gets missed in a lot of pirate media that really just... makes my fucking heart sing. Also Toby Stevens covered in blood Hot. And it's FUCKING FUNNY!!! Will never forget that painting debate scene ever in my life. She has it all and I will never forget her ever in my life.

he’s big, strong, a finely tuned machine built for taking hits and giving them back like a bullet but your rejection makes him pout.

there’s a twist of pain in your chest when he gets like this, but he needs to rest.

despite everything, he acts like its just been another day, but it hasn’t even been two hours since his last fight. theres a bruise painting his lip, another one against his brow, red splotches litter his sides and stomach but he shakes your prying hands off thick wrists, fingers hooking into your waistband and pulling them down to your thighs. he looks up at you with the biggest puppy dog eyes ever. waiting for the okay he knows is inevitably going to come.

“fine, but if i see you wince, we’re stopping.” you sigh, smiling at the absolute beam of teeth and curled lips he gives you.

he’s so fast, peeling off every bit of clothing you had worn tonight. he had to have you, needed it like he needed that win.

a win that he already has, now he just needs you.

you cant deny that his excitement isn’t making you wet, he’s like a god above you, vying for your attention and body. he was truly glorious tonight, muscles taut and coiled as he bounced along the white canvas. biceps curled and ready for his opening to land one of his signature right hooks. he takes every hit against his body like it’s nothing, completely unfazed by his opponent. at one point during the match he taunted them, dropping his arms and baring his teeth, just waiting for the fight to truly get good. it makes you squirm, he could be so intimidating, watching like a predator for any opening, any hole in the opponents defense.

your body flushes in memory of watching him land that final hit, he sees the way your thighs squish together. groaning at the thought that your body was responding to his advances, surely knowing by memory how good he fucks you.

your bo always looks so strong and powerful. no matter where he is, whether he’s fighting or when he’s trapping you against those strong arms.

it makes you sigh at the pure determination he’s dripping in, rolling your eyes as he gives you a once over, wiggling his eyebrows at you, torso stretching to reach something from the bedside table, canines flashing as he shows you his newest trophy. its a devious look, proud eyes glinting down at you.

Drivers License and Detour by @gyukult is sweet and tender and just a fantastic coming of age story. The reader has been in love with her brother’s best friend, Park Jimin, for almost all of her youth... but what is going on in his head?It’s a tender story that really warms the heart. AND I am happy there is more coming. I would read about these two all day. She published the second part and oh my gosh it’s so incredibly perfect I could scream. This was just such a beautiful journey every step of the way.

Milestone by @1kook is probably one of the first brother’s best friend BTS fics I read and it is amazing. I adore it so much. Because Jungkook is your brother’s best friend he is there for every milestone in your life. But you’ve both grown up now and neither of you are kids anymore. It’s hot. Like really hot. Dialogue and set up are so sharp and fast paced I really loved every second.

Young God by @njssi is scorching hot smut with complicated feelings and warm revelations. You think it’s going somewhere and then it goes somewhere else and honestly it is so awesome the whole time. Jungkook was always your brother’s sweet little friend, but he’s returned determined to show you that he is all grown up.

Tease by @caiuscassiuss floored me. I loved it so much! I spent the whole story just squealing happily about everything. This story has it all. It’s scorching hot. It’s enemies-to-lovers. It’s Taehyung. Jungkook’s sister and Kim Taehyung do not get along AT all—so she decides to bring him to his knees by making him desperate for her. It’s a wild and completely awesome ride.

Wasabi by @ironicarmy is a classic. Hobi is a bad boy that Namjoon vehemently refuses to let near his precious baby sister. But love is too strong a force and soon Hobi and the clever object of his desire decide that some things are worth fighting for. It’s a really sweet story of facing challenges and relying on the people you love. Warm and fuzzy feelings abound, but it’s also super hot.

Forbidden by @btssmutgalore is a masterwork blueprint for this trope. Hobi is a carefree player who falls brutally for Taehyung’s sister. They two of them eventually give in to a VERY steamy series of secret encounters and feelings get very involved. This is hot, suspenseful, and emotionally satisfying. Excellent characterizations as well.

Prohibido by @personasintro is an office AU with a twist. Namjoon is not only her brother’s best friend, he is also her boss and the two of them have incredible chemistry. Watching them pretend that they’re not insanely attracted to each other is so endearing and hot. Reader is convinced her feelings are one-sided. It’s lovely and fun. Definitely a slow burn, but worth it.

Strawberry Kisses by @kimnjss is a fic that I devoured in one sitting and then re-read again immediately. Jeon Jungkook is a player who matches with a girl on a dating app and has no idea she is the sister of his revered mentor and close friend, Min Yoongi. I laughed. I cried. I GASPED OUT LOUD a bunch. It was a whole thing. This is a hybrid social media/written AU and it’s pretty much perfect.

Tempestuous by @ppersonna is so special to me because it was written at the very beginning of my friendship with Lindy. She was looking for requests and I was quick to request my favorite trope. Lindy is bae now and this fic she wrote is marvelous. You are forced to spend the weekend in the same house with your sexy arch-rival Taehyung who just so happens to be your brother’s best friend. Naturally snarky hotness ensues.

Off Limits @floralseokjin is basically a famous entry when it comes to this trope. It’s a Jin fic and Miss Jordan writes EXQUISITE Jin characterizations. There is a hint of mistaken (or unknown) identity in this one which makes it even more fun. Sparks fly between you and a devilishly charming Kim Seokjin at a party. You don’t find out until later who he really is—and why he’s off limits.

And finally I’ll recommend my own Brother’s Best Friend fic All I Want for Christmas is You featuring a charming Taehyung who falls for Jimin’s sister. Jimin basically blackmails his best friend into escorting his sister to several holiday galas. Tae and Jimin’s sister have never gotten along, but they soon discover (through multiple pranks and mishaps) that love (and desire) are out of their control.

Not Your Fairytale by @yeojaa is incredibly sweet and tender. Erin really does emotion so well and her Yoongi characterization is honestly so nuanced and brilliant. This story is about a girl who had her heart broken and instead of canceling the cake tasting she scheduled with her philandering ex-fiancé, she wrangles the tsundere best friend of her brother to pretend to be him.

Brother’s Best Friend by @bts-hyperfixation is a short and sweet moment between two people who have been fighting their attraction for each other. It is so hot and delicious I tell you. You’re in trouble and the person you call is probably the person you shouldn’t—but you aren’t the only one willing to take a risk tonight.

Off Limits by @kaddiiction will break your heart and put it back together again. This one was recommended to me by a reader and I cannot thank them enough. It is fantastic. Jimin is a player but he crosses the line when he begins a liaison with his best friend’s sister. Still there is far more to this situation—and Jimin—than meets the eye.

Orectic by @gimmesumsuga is one of my favorite fics of all time. It is a hybrid fic where the reader is a cat hybrid and Hoseok is the brother of her best friend who comes to stay with her while her bestie is away... It is so tender yet SO HOT. I’m telling you I cannot even keep count of how many times I have read it.

Theophany by @ilikemesometaetaes was a JOURNEY. It made me so emotional. Like the story centers around art a lot, but let me tell you, this fic IS art. Jimin is just the man of my whole dreams in this piece as the brother of a former best friend with an irresistible allure. It is a coming of age story with the most beautiful twist. AND THE LOVE SCENE—oh my gosh I screamed it was so good. This story is just so so good.

Run by @neonlights92 is Jungkook’s story in the mafia universe I am COMPLETELY OBSESSED WITH. You don’t have to read the whole series to understand it (BUT YOU SHOULD). This is best friend’s brother meets arranged marriage and honestly it’s fantastic. Jungkook doesn’t do love and affection and being forced into an arranged marriage with his sister’s friend who has always had a crush on him is just a blow to his freedom... or is she? GAH! This story—like all the stories in this universe—is superb.

The Magic to Happiness by @readyplayerhobi is a best friend’s brother meets teachers AU meets Hogwarts AU. Now... all of those are top tier tropes so finding them together is like winning the lottery. Hobi was once just a skinny kid who had obvious heart eyes for you (his sister’s best friend) but now he’s tall and confident and really attractive. The magic of this story is evident in every word of the sweet relationship that blooms between these two.

Problem with You by @monvante is so sweet and kind of hilarious. I giggled so much! Jungkook is your best friend’s brother and he is kind of too perfect and too handsome and he’s always around and you hate him and he hates you... Right? When you cross paths with the infuriating Jeon Jungkook at your best friend’s wedding, you discover that you may have been wrong about a great many things.

Show Me Yours and I’ll Show You Mine by @ktheist is so so SO fabulous. I was obsessed with this (now complete) series from the very first installment. You and Tae are besties who have know each other since you were little kids, but lately Tae’s older brother Jin has been lookin mighty fine. Just how far can you push him till he breaks. like i don't even know what there is to say? ik i just said i think prefer platonic bau relationships but they're honestly the exception. they're just all over each other constantly and always the other's top priority. they have such undeniable chemistry that i can't even try to justify it, it's like trying to explain why the sun rises every day. like im sure there are people who can explain it better than i but i just witness it and accept it for the truth that it is

what is a question i frequently find myself asking is at what point do they progress in their relationship? there are just so many different options and so many opportunities for pining and longing but also comfort and love and i just cant decide when what happens.

like in season one they're CLEARLY in the flirty stage. at least morgan is, anyway. spencer meanwhile is still figuring things out and not letting himself get his hopes up about morgan, thinking that he's just a naturally flirtatious person so of course he's gonna act like that. it doesn't mean he likes him, right? so derek's puttin feelers out and spencer's insecure and that's where things start to get complicated for me.

do they work it out? does spencer have that realization that derek's liked him this whole time? or does derek, sensing spencer's hesitation, read that as genuine discomfort and decide to back off (which then just affirms spencer's suspicions that derek never liked him in the first place and then they're back at square one all over again).

there's something so tragic about two people clearly in love dancing around each other endlessly, never quite settling. but thats so homophobic to me personally ajdhlsdg i want them to be HAPPY

Casting Starkid in Heathers: Crack Edition

So you know that one Tumblr post that suggests that if Starkid ever did Heathers they should replace the Heathers with the Josephs? Yeah, we’re casting that production. Changing some of the names around for comedic value/ to genderbend. Let’s do this!

VeROBica Robert Sawyer: Robert Manion. One of our two resident Starkids who stan Heathers hardcore. Honestly how could I not??? He’s the fan the Starkids took in, so the backstory kinda parallels a bit. He’s got the badass himbo vibes necessary for the role. It just fits.

Jason Jamie Dean: Mariah Rose Faith. Gotcha! I know I used Jamie’s name but only because it really fit. Anyways, it’s the other hardcore Heathers stan! Can you just imagine the POWER behind Mariah as JD??? Listen, if this isn’t Mariah’s role I don’t know what is. And her and Rob have such good vibes together! Their Seventeen cover? Iconic. And her cover of Meant to be Yours is UNREAL!!!

Heather Chandler Joseph Richter: Joey Richter. The Josephs get to keep their last names. Why? Because why not! Listen, it was hard to choose between Joey and Walker for who would take on the ICONIC Chandler, and it honestly could have been either. In the end, though, I just think Joey could handle Chandler’s part in Candy Store better, and also I think Walker would make a better Duke than Joey- more detail in the Duke explanation.

Heather Duke Joseph Walker: Joe Walker. Listen, if any one of those three could pull off Duke it is Joe Walker. I have no clue why but I think Duke’s vibes may be a mix of Umbridge (AVPT) and Joey’s Dick (MAMD)??? MAMD also played a large factor in why Joey was Chandler and Walker was Duke. I don’t know if we should be exposing the world to this chaos, but here we are-

Heather McNamara Joseph Moses: Joe Moses. It’s the soft smol Joseph! Listen, I am a HUGE vibes person and I have no clue why but I get all the McNamara vibes from Joe. I know we’ve seen him primarily in very comedic roles but I feel like he would absolutely CRUSH Lifeboat??? Anyways I need it.

Martha Martin Dunstock: Jon Matteson. Listen, we have all seen what Jon can do with anxious, loveable characters. He breaks our hearts, and we love him for it. Plus the chemistry with Rob is so there! Like, they’ve got the same vibes for that friendship. And can you imagine Kindergarten Boyfriend (Girlfriend in this production)??? U g h

Ram Sweeny: Jaime Lyn Beatty. We’re keeping the name. Anyways, I came up with the duo I wanted for Kurt and Ram before casting them in the specific roles, and then I considered both of those people’s chemistry with Jon. And Spadattimy will ALWAYS be iconic so I went with Jaime. I am so here for Jaime playing a himbo. Jaime can do whatever the fuck she wants. She is god tier. The woman has range. But this was also mostly to do with her chemistry with Kurt and Martha.

Kurt Kate Kelly: Angela Giarratana. I mean, COME ON! Jaime and Angie as Kurt and Ram??? Yes please! You have to remember that Jaime was the one to bring Angie into Starkid, even though on social media Angie appears to be closer to Mariah. So Jaime and Angie are good friends. And the himbo vibes those two could radiate for these roles... it would be nothing short of iconic. Kurt and Ram are kind of the two majorly comedic roles in te show, so it’s only fitting they be filled with two of Starkids most notorious comediennes. And they could pass for a lesbian couple.

Mr. Sweeney/ Others: Corey Dorris. Listen, I don’t have much of an explanation for this. Just vibes. We’re going purely off of vibes here. And also dad energy.

Mr Kelly/ Others: Jeff Blim. Yeah, again, it’s just vibes. All vibes. And also we’re finding a dad for Angie’s character here. You gotta try to at least match the chaotic vibes Angie gives off.

Mr. Fleming/ Others: Curt Mega. If this was a regular production of Heathers, I’d say Jaime. But this isn’t Heathers. This is Josephs. There was no reason to genderbend. Just sheer vibes alone brought me to Curt. I don’t know, she radiates the same vibes as Duke Keane, so here we are. Also I love Curt and I wanted him in this cast. There is that.

Anyways this just lives in my head rent-free so I figured I’d share! Feel free to add to it!

Nevertheless, The Finale (Review)

(We could have had this. We could have had it. God, this hurts to write.)

Crash landing.

That’s what comes to mind as I watched the final scene in episode 10 of Nevertheless. We’re here. We made it.

But not for the better. At some point, the engines burst into flame, the wings fell off, the pilots jumped out and we, the viewers, were forced to put our heads between our knees and endure the worst kdrama ending I have ever seen with my own two eyes in recent history.

If you’re reading this and haven’t seen the finale yet, I am warning you now: SPOILERS AHEAD.

For the last time, let’s get into it.

This is immensely painful to write. I don’t know what happened in the writers room between episode 9 and episode 10, because, how we came to this ending makes no sense. None at all. I spoke at length about it another post a couple days ago regarding the spoilers photos that were leaked; the writers, after having established so much growth in episode 9 for Na Bi, surely weren’t going to just throw it all out the window for episode 10, right?

Yet, here we are. That’s exactly what happened.

First off, I want to talk about the visual elements in this episode: it sucked. Normally, Nevertheless cinematography is top tier and always praise worthy and, here, it felt off to me. I wasn’t drawn is as I usually was. Also the pacing dragged for the first thirty minutes as we see Na Bi and Jae Eon deal with aftermath of their “breakup”. It’s not until almost halfway through the episode that it finally picks up with the destruction of her sculpture.

Jae Eon finds out and vows to help her rebuild it and then leave her alone afterwards. He makes a comment on how she’s at her prettiest when working on her art. Once it’s finished, he leaves her alone, as promised.

Okay. Good. So far, so good.

And then, we hit the café scene with Do Hyeok. And my stomach dropped. All that nice, comfortable, affectionate energy that was building between them vanished. Na Bi speaks about her sculpture and how her assistants really helped her (speaking clearly about Jae Eon).

And I knew. I knew how it was going to end. And so did Do Hyeok. He doesn’t know that Jae Eon is one of her assistants, but I think he guesses by the way Na Bi talks. Na Bi thinks the whole experience was terrible but from the way she talks about it, Do Hyeok points out “maybe you were actually enjoying it the whole time.” Seeing his cheerful smile drop was just crushing.

Oh, Do Hyeok. They did you so bad in this episode.

(And WTF do you mean she was actually enjoying it the whole time, writers?! She was freaking miserable for FIVE WHOLE EPISODES. What toxic BS is this? Sweet Jesus, I wanted to punch something so bad.)

And my outrage at how off the chemistry was between Na Bi and Do Hyeok; it was just so wrong. It felt so forced.

And then hits just kept on coming. Na Bi brings out the butterfly pendant and puts it on. God, please, no.

And then. Do Hyeok returns for his second confession scene. And, hoo boy, what Na Bi said made me almost have a stroke:

Do Hyeok: “Do you still like Jae Eon?”

Na Bi: “Yes, I think I do. I know he’s not someone who will make me happy. But, I was really happy with the moments I spent with you, Do Hyeok.”

What.

Na Bi knows that Jae Eon will not make her happy. She was really happy with the moments she spent with Do Hyeok. But she still chooses Jae Eon.

Does not compute.

No tears from Na Bi and Do Hyeok as they say goodbye to each other. A simple thank you from Do Hyeok and he walks out, flowers in hand.

Your childhood best friend who has been loving you unconditionally just confessed and you can’t even muster some tears as you part ways. Like I said, something is wrong here. Seriously wrong.

(I had to pause the episode and go for a walk around the house to clear my head when I saw this. Like, writers, how the hell does that make sense!)

Na Bi even admits in her confession to Jae Eon that she hates him. But then proceeds to ask him out.

And that’s it. They go on a date, wearing their respective colors (gag me, please), and that’s it.

Or, is it?

Because this show is always good with details. And I noticed something interesting at the end, when they’re walking along, holding hands.

Na Bi and Jae Eon walk by a restaurant and Na Bi spots Do Hyeok sitting inside. He’s clearly talking to someone, but we don’t see who.

And, interestingly, Na Bi’s hand almost slips out of Jae Eon’s. There’s a curious expression on her face as she cranes her neck to see who Do Hyeok is speaking with. It’s just a brief moment before Jae Eon pulls her away to continue their walk, and she resumes her hand holding.

So. There’s that. A potential set up for a second season. I don’t know, don’t ask; nothing’s been confirmed. We’ll see.

I have to say something - this episode was utter BS. Something weird was going on behind the scenes here, and I can prove it.

If you watched the preview, like I did, you might have been mistaken in the belief that Na Bi and Do Hyeok were clearly endgame. Why?

Because she accepted his flowers. The preview shows her walking inside the art gallery holding them, resulting in the lovely photos of them smiling brightly at each other in the above screenshots (the first two). But in the actual episode itself, Na Bi doesn’t accept the flowers and we don’t see the scenes I just talked about. It just cuts straight to her reunion with Jae Eon.

Do you see what I’m getting at? This isn’t some conspiracy theory. What was shown in the preview and what was shown in the actual episode was completely different.

They changed the ending. It’s the only thing that makes sense. Do Hyeok and Na Bi were going to be the endgame, and someone forced them to change it to Jae Eon and Na Bi instead. Perhaps for a setup for Season 2 or someone important really, really wanted Song Kang to get the girl this time.

If it’s setup for season 2, especially coupled with the last scene that suggests that Na Bi’s and Jae Eon’s relationship isn’t going to last (and it’s not, especially if the Fanfic writers have anything to say about it), I’m all for it. Because that means Na Bi and Do Hyeok are endgame. I’ll suffer through another ten episodes if it means that, long as the same cast and team return.

If not, then, this is the ending. And it’s terrible.

I know it hurts. But, I just want to remind everyone that this is just one chapter in Na Bi’s life and nothing between her and Jae Eon are guaranteed to last. I wrote a post some weeks ago how, if they really wanted to make these two endgame, then the writers needed to do the work. Show the characters working through their issues to become healthier, happier people and convince me that they could be a solid couple in the long run.

None of that happened in this episode. Or any of the other episodes proceeding it. Na Bi and Jae Eon spent five episodes just staring at each other and not talking, and then suddenly, a last minute redemption. If there is not going to be a second season, then this is the cheapest, most cop out ending for a kdrama ever. And it really hurts because they really set a high standard for themselves.

Nevertheless promoted itself as a hyper realistic show that wanted to be different from any other kdrama and instead ended up with the most cliche, disappointing finale I have seen in recent memory. What a failure. There needs to be a second season to redeem this dumpster fire of an ending.

Well, that’s all for now. I’m going to watching some other stuff to cleanse this from my memory.

I have two more posts planned for this show and then I’m out for good or until they announce a second season. First post - as promised, my character analysis for our “heroine” Yu Na Bi. I wanted to wait until the series finished to really get a take on her character and, well, I don’t think I’m going to be nice.

And the second post will be an overall review/analysis for the entire drama. All of it; the themes, the acting, the direction, the music, the plot, the writing; the good, the bad, the ugly.

My condolences to everyone who stuck it through from beginning to end. I’m really sorry you wasted your time.

Ok this is gonna be long. I’ve literally been slowly working on this for… too long. I’m just in a mood to have a long discussion about ships. I’ll be looking at canon and not, so bare with me. I don’t ship all of these personally. I’m mostly just picking the most popular ones. I chose to leave out a few that I just don’t want to talk about. I tried to keep this loosely chronological, but that quickly went to hell. None of this is meant to be hate towards anyone’s ship, just my personal opinions on each of them.

Canon:

Scott x Allison: True Classic

Scallison is so sweet as it is truly the epitome of young love. Romeo and Juliet, except Romeo is even more of an idiot and Juliet is a badass who dies for a cause. They’re moral and ethical codes are both highly valued by themselves, even if they don’t align with others very often. They loved with everything they had. They were beautiful. We’re they soulmates in the end, or just the first love who will always hold a special place in your heart? Who knows, but I’ll always love these immature kids who thought their love could change everything.

Stiles x Lydia: The Long Awaited

Stydia is as slow burn as you can get. Unfortunately their actual getting together was slightly rushed in my opinion. They didn’t have time to find their own as a couple because Stiles just wasn’t in the show enough at that point. I know the reasons behind it, but it did leave this couple at an awkward stage of official-but-not-shown. The idea that Stiles loved her as a kid, immature and infatuated, and he saw her for who she really was, will always be cute. Then they grew, changed, became friends, and found other people. Them finding each other later on, having real love that’s developed slowly, is a wonderful arc. Though, a part of me will always believe they should have pursued other story lines in the wake of Stiles’ absence from the plot. They’re finally together! …but we don’t get to see it.

Jackson x Lydia: The Image

Oh Jackson and Lydia. Honestly, I love them. Their connection at a time in their lives when they couldn’t open up to anyone else, just hits me right in the feels. I mean, god that HUG. You know the one. Always brings me to tears. I’m so sad their relationship was almost entirely depicted during Jackson’s kanima time when he couldn’t think nor truly act for himself. Those small moments of scared vulnerability when he wanted to protect her from himself… I’ll miss these two. They deserved to find other people and remain life-long friends. I loved their moment in the last episode. I wish they’d gotten to see each other grow. Also they had such bixbi solidarity vibes, and I’ll die on that hill.

Scott x Lydia: Leaders

Ok, I’m gonna be honest here. I ship it. The power couple they would have been?? Also them coming together after they lost Allison would have actually made sense. A part of me kinda wishes the writers had moved on from Stydia as a romantic relationship and leaned into them growing as friends and Stiles moving on from his childhood crush. Scott and Lydia actually would have had good chemistry. They were both very headstrong heroic types, but Lydia would have balanced Scott out well intellectually. They had the history, and I think it could had worked if they wrote it right. Plus, Scott and Lydia would have been a better endgame that Scalia.

Scott x Kira: New Beginnings

These two were adorable. Kira was a badass, don’t get me wrong, but she let herself be soft in a way Allison was always afraid to. This couple was truly Baby. Absolute dorks. I can definitely see the lasting quality between the two of them. They saw things very similarly, and had a ton in common. I do think Kira deserves more characterization outside of their relationship, like more of her friendship with Malia. Overall, her departure from the show will always be sad to me. It was bad writing. Scott was over her far too quickly.

Aiden x Lydia: Pretty People Herd

I honestly didn’t see much between these two other than mutual attraction. The best thing to come out of this relationship was Lydia’s line, “You’re not just a bad boy, Aiden. You’re a bad guy. And I don’t want to be with the bad guys.” Good character development moment.

Ethan x Danny: Step to Redemption

Danny really was the thing that made Ethan look outside of the pack for what he really wanted out of life. They had a few cute scenes. Gotta love Danny’s final remarks, “Dude, it’s Beacon Hills.”

Allison x Isaac: Unexpected Rebound

Ok, I like these two. Isaac could match Allison’s snark in a way Scott couldn’t. They both fought the progression of the relationship slightly. They didn’t expect to fall for each other. They were less willing to let someone in close. I’d love to have seen more… but unfortunately their time was limited. On a side note, sometimes their relationship did feel like ‘we both are in love with the same guy, let’s cope with each other’, but I find that completely valid. I’ll talk about Scallisaac later though.

Stiles x Malia: Anchors

Ok but, them <3 I love what they did for each other. Stiles was able to help Malia connect to her humanity and other people. He never tried to isolate her in their relationship and encouraged her growth. Malia offered Stiles the emotional support he never asked for. She defended him, fought for him, and loved him fiercely. Stiles needed that so much after season 3. I think they were a love that wasn’t meant to last, but the impact of it was forever. I wish we’d gotten to see a real end for them where they agreed that they needed to grow as individuals but would always still care.

Liam x Hayden: Three’s a Pattern

These two’s characterization stopped whenever they had storylines together. Their relationship was built on Scallison references. Hayden’s character could have been interesting, but they never really gave her a moment to shine. Liam has the worst plots when they revolved around her. Cute couple, poor writing.

Derek x Braeden: Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girl Boss

Derek deserves to be happy so much. Kate and Jennifer were just... jeez. Him and Braeden were cute and deserved more screen time. I think her intensity allowed for Derek to let go of control a bit more comfortably. Let Derek Be Soft. Anyway, love them.

Corey x Mason: Gotta Have That Rep TM

These two could have been cute if they were shown for more than two seconds at a time. I highkey forget Corey even existed all the time. Kinda just felt like a relationship to fill TW’s gay quota.

Jackson x Ethan: The Callback

Honestly? Loved them. Loved the chemistry. Loved the dynamic. Best twist. I know it was probably written in like that because Colton came out during his time away from the show, but it absolutely fit his character. Jethan is top tier.

Melissa x Chris: BAMF Parent Duo

Ok, so like, Melissa deserved this plot. She deserved someone to care about her. However... what the hell? Chris? In canon, his wife died like 2-ish years prior? His daughter died 1 year prior?? Is Chris really in a position to pursue a new relationship?? Also, like, Scott and Allison dated and loved each other up to her death. Kinda weird to have their parents hook up. I don’t hate it, but I don’t ship it…?

Scott x Malia: Lead up? What’s lead up?

These two came out of nowhere I stg. Like, 6B really tried to tell us this was something that had been slowly developing in the background? Also, I understand that they are their own people, adults, and completely in charge of their own romantic pursuits: but did Scott seriously never call Stiles? Like, Malia wasn’t just his first girlfriend. She was his first. Like, dude that’s your best friend?? Not even a head’s up? No, ‘hey would this bother you?’ Oof. Plus Malia was way too chaotic for Scott. She existed in gray morality that always prioritized her immediate circle, and Scott was a very black/white type of heroism. I just didn’t feel like they fit.

Non-Canon:

Scott x Stiles: Childhood Best Friends

Ya, sorry, I don’t ship Sciles at all. I get it. Like, I totally understand the ship, and I mean no judgment at all. I just see them as friends. I really value good male friendships in media because I feel like we don’t get enough, and I always liked these two.

Stiles x Derek: Enemies to Lovers. 100k. Angst. Hurt/Comfort.

God these two really are what fanfiction was made for. I could write a much longer discussion about Sterek, and I probably will eventually. I’ll try to keep this brief. These two weren’t always on the same side, but their approach was the same. They were very similar at their core. Plus, wow the chemistry. This should have been canon. Jeff’s a coward.

Allison x Lydia: Powerful.

This ship is so great. They really had a great dynamic, and a romantic plot would have easily fit the established narrative. Lydia’s confidence in herself and Allison’s confidence in her own abilities crossing over to each other because that’s what the other lacked? Iconic.

Danny x Jackson: He Gets Him

Danny really saw Jackson for everything he was and still cared. I wished we’d gotten to see more of them. I want more background with Jackson’s eventual coming out and his friendship with Danny. Like, they ended up dating the same guy. What did Ethan have to say about that??

Stiles x Jackson: Bastards

Ok these two had a super fun dynamic. The asshole-energy between them was, great. The snark was always so entertaining.

Melissa x Noah: Family

How were these two not endgame? Their sons were practically brothers already. They had amazing chemistry. The flirting? Not to mention, their timeline would have made way more sense. Missed opportunity.

Chris x Peter: The Opposite of Love is Indifference, Not Hate

Ok so like, this was definitely one of those ships that I had absolutely no knowledge of before I was pretty into the fandom. Like, this was not something I would have guessed just after watching the show. That being said; my god the chaos alone…

Scott x Isaac: The Disaster Duo

Okay ya I love these two. Two dumb asses who act like idiot puppies. Such a fun dynamic. Plus?? Chemistry??? Hellooo

Scott x Allison x Isaac: Three Heads Are Better Than One

This ship is definitely one of my personal favorites. I very rarely poly-ship. I just feel like most of them are just love triangles with an ‘easy solution’, when two of them have no real connection. That is so not the case here. I feel like all of them have such great chemistry with each other. They also have a great dynamic as a group. Season 3A was really just Scallisaac rights.

Stiles x Isaac: I Hate You, jk…Not Really

Ok I loved their banter, but I really just don’t see this ship. Idk, I don’t personally ship it. Would have loved to see their friendship develop more tho.

Erica x Allison: Duo that would stab you with a stiletto

I don’t ship it, but I do wish we’d seen them become friends. I feel like they had a very artificial ‘girls fighting over a boy’ dynamic? They could have been such a badass duo.

Stiles x Erica: Batman x Catwoman

Ok I’m not sure exactly how to express my feelings for these two so bare with me. OMG I love their dynamic so much, and they are sooo cute. Their energy? Amazing. Chemistry? Great. History? It’s there and has so much potential. 10/10. Love them. But, no, I don’t ship it lol. Just really love their friendship, but with the underlying history of crushes.

Boyd x Erica: Was This Not Canon?

How can anyone not love Berica? Ugh they are adorable. These two deserved so much better.

Boyd x Cora: Survivors

Honestly I don’t really see it? Like they definitely had a connection, but it never felt romantic. I really feel like they just had to lean on each other and bond to make it through captivity, and it just lasted.

Boyd x Erica x Cora: The Pack

I literally learned this was a ship a couple days ago. Similar feelings towards this as Bora, but with the added hesitancy of we never actually saw Erica and Cora interact.

Cora x Stiles: Slow Build Up

These two were clearing being lined up to be a thing before Cora ended up leaving. I can’t say I’m disappointed they never happened. Kinda felt like they just wanted to straight-code Sterek.

Cora x Lydia: Mean Lesbians

Not much interaction to actually go off of, but yes I 100% support. They have very different approaches to problems, which is fun. Very ‘opposites attract’.

Malia x Kira: “Maybe you could date the coyote?”

Another one of my favorites!! They really complimented each other. Also, how full circle would they have been? They were introduced in back-to-back episodes. Malia stalking her as a coyote? The line from Kira’s dad about dating it? It would have been so funny if that ended up happening.

Malia x Lydia: Beauty and the Beast, but make it wlw

These two were fun. I liked their friendship, but I don’t really ship it. Though, rip Stiles that would have been hilarious.

Parrish x Lydia: The Cop and The Minor

Must I say more? Like, Parrish’s character, so sweet and big rule follower, did not make sense for what went down with Lydia. I love Parrish, but the dynamic just felt off. It didn’t feel consistent with the rest of his characterization.

Parrish x Stiles: The Cop and The Minor, but gay?

Ok, same reasoning as above, but also they had absolutely no connection romantically.

Scott x Theo / Stiles x Theo: Sometimes The Villain is Hot

Ok I’ve put these together because I have the same opinion for both. I don’t ship it. Neither had any rebuilding of trust, and Theo really hurt both of them. I just don’t really think they work.

Mason x Liam: Sciles Puppy Pack Edition

Similar to my feeling about Sciles, I just don’t ship these two. They had a good friendship, from the little we saw of it.

Theo x Liam: Anchors 2: Electric Boogaloo

Another personal favorite! I really don’t even understand why this didn’t go canon?? The elevator scene was just, so intense. They helped each other grow in 6B, and I really loved their dynamic. They should have hooked up.

Parrish x Laura: What’s canon?

I’ve seen this in fanfic a lot, and I actually really like it lol. I thought I’d add it in here because I do love the creativity of fandoms.
