"Hollywood—all the joys of the petty community life of 'Main Street' with an additional coating of gold dust thrown in for good measure! "I am not going to describe any of the widely heralded Hollywood parties with unmentionable details, nor am I insinuating that Hollywood is a 'wicked city'—it is not even that—it is merely and imitation gilded hell of a make-believe realm. Nothing but sham—sham—and more sham. "Hollywood—one continuous struggle of nobodies to become somebodies, all pretending to be what they are not."

Uprooted
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐; my favourite kind of fantasy - classic fairytale with a side of 'dont worry about the details' and 'you gotta believe in the heart of the cards!'
Oh?? 👌😉😏
a really sharp, quick-witted, and willful female protagonist going 'fuck it!' every few chapters or so and doing something crazy (crazy fun) to drive the plot forward, off a new exciting cliff
a soft magic system that really shows off in the best light what makes soft magic systems so valid. its all about the metaphors!! you have to measure the chocolate chips with your heart!!!
nature is so magical and beautiful and deadly. specifically if you treat trees bad they will form a sentient vengeful forest to raze your civilization to the ground and salt the earth with your bodies
kasia. i love an atomic blonde unkillable bad bitch with the strongest queerplatonic vibes with her best friend from birth
a CLASSIC grumpy 'beastly' male love interest. he seals himself away in a lonely tower, makes girls hang out with him for 10 years at a time, and unironically calls himself 'the Dragon'. he even has the audacity to be offended that everyone thinks he's creepy!!!!!!
No.. ❌🤢🤮
if you like having explanations for how magic works and any semblance of a hard magic system in your fantasy, put this book back. 'round here we operate on Vibes Only, babey!!
similarly, if your love language is words of affirmation and/or you think that fanfic-style romance plotlines should stay in fanfic, this romance is Not For You. this is not a judgment, only a warning
Summary: Agnieszka loves her home in her little village in the valley - you know, except for the evil forest simply known as the Wood that's been around as long as there have been people in the valley, with terrible creatures and sentient walking trees. And the century-old wizard known only as 'the Dragon' living in the tower overlooking their land, who takes a young woman every ten years to serve him. But what Agnieszka dreads the most is that her best friend, Kasia, will be chosen next, and that Agnieszka is helpless to save her. Until the day of the choosing, when the Dragon picks Agnieszka instead.
Concept: 💭💭💭💭 I've never gotten along that well with a book blurb, but this one does its damn job - gives me enough plot premise to get me interested without giving it all away, and doesn't make me feel like I've been lied to once I start the book! some stories really don't do what they say on the tin, or take ages to get there at all, but Uprooted starts off exactly at the spot the blurb said it would - with a girl, in a valley, scared of a terrible wizard, about to be whisked away to a tower.
Execution: 💥💥💥💥💥 This story is EXACTLY what it says it wants to be, down to the cadence of the prose - a Polish folklore-inspired fairytale. The rhythm of Novik's narration even fits right - one day I'll get the audiobook for this and get to hear it the way I read it in my head, like a grandmother's bedtime story with twists and eddies and crescendos at the all the right bits. I was in love with the aesthetic of every character, they fit perfectly into the backdrop of what this story was.
Personal Enjoyment: ❤❤❤❤❤ This book aligns to my tastes much the same way An Enchantment of Ravens does, and shares of lot of the same elements without ever feeling derivative - smart girl meets magic boy, causes all kinds of irreversible political upheaval, and lives happily ever after being just as they are - a Girl with The Audacity. its a tale as old as time, and i'll hear it told just as often
Favourite Moment: you know its a good book when you really can't choose a favourite moment - one that comes to mind is agniezska choosing to save sarkan from being grafted onto the heart-tree in the Wood instead of setting fire to it. the 'fuck it!' energy agniezska brings to her moments of crisis is SO good, plus the motif of her always reaching out to sarkan to cast magic together - 'hey real quick, cast a spell with me while you're being pulled into an evil magic tree trying to twist your magic and life force against us. couldn't hurt, eh?' and then it WORKS
Favourite Character: now yall know i love a sarkan-esque character - pathetic wet cat men who are so offended by their own squishy feelings are a great time! and kasia is SO bad bitch extraordinaire, her and agnieszka's love for each other literally makes the plot go - every time, every time without hesitation she puts herself as the last thing standing between agnieszka and the Wood. but agniezska herself is really Something. the way she uses magic, her connection with nature and her refusal to be anything else than what she is - a grubby young woman who wields kindness as her weapon against the world, who holds onto her humanity with both hands and teeth - she shapes this fairytale to be the story she wants it to be, one of connection and empathy. and im still thinking about her introducing the lord of the whole valley to her mother 🤣 power move!!

The temeraire books are mediocre and that’s because Naomi Novik hadn’t yet discovered that her books thrive when there are a minimum number of men involved

find myself thinking that part of the appeal FraPru as a ship has to me is in regards to their shared weird gender issues and how it relates to them both having been subject to the gendered violence of performing the chivalric roles of both "knight" and "maiden" at different times through their lives and shared history

Note
Naomi Novik can be categorized after she apologizes for giving us the most unnecessary het romance in Uprooted, because I literally rolled my eyes when the Dragon shows up at the end of the book again. Agnieszka and Kasia were a much more interesting relationship, didn't care about the Dragon at all.
Bruh I literally read the interior flap of the book and went "Ah cool it's a beauty and the beast situation" like... you didn't think they were gonna get together in a curmudgeonly Howl and Sophie way from the start?? Like... I don't mean to say you were setting yourself up for disappointment but...

The Origins of Anya's Name
*Spoilers for Mission 11*
Thanks to the CDA discord for inspiring me to write this.
As someone who shares a name with our beloved main character, I am just now realising that I have taken for granted how 'Anya' goes through several different spelling presentations in the manga. Blame the people in my life who constantly mispell it, which has densitised me to all the versions.😂
So, I know none of you asked for this little etymology lesson, but here you go anyway 🥰
Tumblr media
P1: Anya
'Anya' is the Anglicisation of both 'Anja' and 'Ania'. (It is, in my biased opinion, the best version.)
P2: Anja
Anya with a 'j' (still pronounced as a 'y') originates from Germany. On reflection, it's interesting that although SxF is set in a German-adjacent country, we never see this version.
P3: Ania
In the early chapters, many of you noticed that Anya's name was spelled "Ania" on the front of her door. This is actually not a spelling mistake, because "Ania" originates from Eastern Europe (e.g. Poland or Russia, but I lean towards Polish explanations because that is my ancestry).
The interesting thing about this version is that "Ania" is actually the diminutive of "Anna". Eastern European names tend to have a 'formal' version (the name on legal documents), and the 'diminutive' version, which is essentially a nickname that close friends or family would use.
In Polish, other examples of diminutives would be:
'Olka' for 'Aleksandra' (sound familiar?)
'Basia' for 'Barbara'
'Kasia' for 'Katarzyna'
'Joasia' for 'Joanna' (sometimes people will also use 'Asia' - pronounced 'Asha') - As a side note, this sounds a bit familiar to the previous incarnation of Anya's design, which I believe was 'Ashe'. Perhaps Endo just really like diminutives. Perhaps it's a coincidence.
I also think it's interesting that Yor carved this version first. I'm wondering if it relates somehow to Yor's background, for example if her hometown was bordering an Eastern European country, or if she knows anyone with this background.
Tumblr media
If I were use the information from Mission 11 to create a hypothesis, it would be that Anya (the character) likely originates from a Polish/Russian/Eastern European country in the SxF world. I think because Endo has used diminutives for other characters (e.g. Olka), a country like this likely exists in this world.
(I've actually HC'd this for a long time, I've just never had a chance to bring it up...)
Secondly, because the name 'Ania' is also used by friends and family, it is also possible that Anya doesn't know that her formal/legal name might actually be Anna. I would like to believe that in Anya's pre-lab life, she learned that her name is 'Anya' because the name was spoken by someone who loved her.
I'm not sure why the scientists at the lab called her 'Anya' instead of her lab number: perhaps the lab is not located in her home country, and therefore the scientists wouldn't know that the actual origin is 'Anna'. Or maybe they use her diminutive because it is a manipulative tactic to get her to comply with their demands (by appearing more 'friendly'). Who knows.
This could potentially make the reveal of her past that much more heartbreaking, as we don't know yet how she ended up in the lab.
Finally:
I've seen so many more hypotheses and theories from this chapter, so feel free to add them on! Thank you for reading and letting me share my piece.

trying to find a book i've read a while ago (translated from polish) about three teen classmates zosia kasia and a third girl, and it deals with some difficult themes
zosia is a daughter of two doctors and parents expect her to become a doctor too
kasia is from an abusive (?) family trusted with money for some class event but she spends them on clothes alcohol something encouraged by her friend who's clearly a bad influence
third girl is depressed and that's honestly all i remember
i can't find this book by the descriptions but i'd like to reread it

So, hi! I hope this message finds you well!
I know you might’ve moved on from the AoS fandom, but I’ve come from your TikTok, and I love your May & Daisy edits! The fics that accompany a few of them as well are simply glorious! And the captions are mini fics in and of themselves as well so they’re lovely (if heart wrenching at times) to read, too!
I was hoping, if you wouldn’t mind, could you rec some of your favourite May & Daisy fics? Doesn’t matter whether it’s complete or how long it is :)
Thank you for your time! And for your wonderful edits and works!
Have a nice day/night!
thank you so much for your kind words anon, they really do mean a lot :))
as for maydaisy fic recs, boy do i have some for you!!
now for the sake of not making this post too long here are some of my favourite maydaisy authors:
Book_freak I don't think we can talk about maydaisy fics without mentioning them; of they're 90 or so maydaisy fics, you're bound to find your cup of tea!!
PanicMoon15 for when you need a little fluff and lightheartedness. also, they're Baby Mine, Rest Your Head Close To My Heart series? a must read, no one does AU like they do.
cassiopluto for when you want something a little darker and want to read some insanely good writing <3
daisyqiaolianmay they have so many good fics to choose from and I think I mention The Framework later in this post, but others worth checking out are A Daisy By Any Other Name  and The Parts That Make A Whole Series!!
Inkquillery i can't express in words how beautiful her writing is, all of her maydaisy fics are such joys to read <33
marvelthismarvelthat would've ended up listing all their fics in the following section so I listed them here. they write so many cool concepts it's hard to summarize them, but each and every one is incredible
agentmmayy a lot of sweet philindaisy content as well as a handful of maydaisy angst bcus sometimes that's just what you need.
here are some more specific fics that I (obviously) love:
It’s a Long Road Out to Recovery From Here by PanicMoon15 I enjoy most fics that deal with their relationship post the season 2 finale, but this one is quite something else. the writing and the themes and the characterization and just omg I cannot stress how good this fic is!!
Hold Her Close by StillTryingToWrite I'm a sucker for character studies and introspections and this one is just so beautiful.
silent secret sacred ground by Inkspinner a post-coulson's s5 death fic that is just so sweet and so gentle and I lose my cool a little whenever I think about it.
In Kasias' arena, no one wins… by Axolotl7 read this so long ago but I remember it being just jawdroppingly tragic and such a cool concept. insanely vivid writing <3
Mother’s Day/Father’s Day Series by agentquakingskye philinda becoming grandparents?? yes please. this series is so fluffy and so happy and even if you aren't into daisy x sousa, i think it's still worth reading.
Exposure by agentquakingskye now this isn't maydaisy focused, but they do have quite a few scenes and honestly, I'll take any opportunity to recommend this fic because oh my god. life-changing, I'm telling you.
and if you're into AU's that deal with baby/younger daisy some of my favs are:
from your head down to your toes (and your tiny nose) by agentmmayy of all the "daisy getting turned into a baby somehow" fics, this one is my absolute favourite. sadly I think it was discontinued but I think it's worth reading the 18 chapters posted!
Just a Walk in the Park by Bdoyle1807 I remember lovinggg the dynamic between May and (a much younger) Daisy in this and I'm pretty sure I read it in one sitting so.
The Framework by daisyqiaolianmay such an interesting take on the whole Framework stuff, I can't recommend it enough.
honestly, despite going through my bookmarks pretty meticulously, I'm probably missing some I would absolutely recommend as well, but I hope you find something you like out of the ones listed :))

That thing about Netflix, the BBC, and ITV all considering banning corsets from period dramas is making me think again about an interview I read a while ago with Louisa Jacobson, which really struck me at the time: she mentions that she asked the costumers to tight-lace her at her first fitting, and then was stuck with that throughout much of the rest of the filming of season one. Apparently the corset was so tight it bruised her ribs.
I have two points to make about this, which are:
a) The costumers should have never let her do that. I do not know who was doing this fitting, but considering the fact that she plays a main character on the show I assume it was either Kasia Walicka-Maimone herself or a very high-up assistant, and the fact that they did not point out to her that lacing down to a rib-bruising extent would be uncomfortable and unsafe is completely ridiculous. Costume designers wear a variety of hats, but one of their roles is to create garments that will be functional on set and on screen, and I would consider this to be acute incompetence on the part of Walicka-Maimone and her team. (We know from behind the scenes photos that they also do not have her wear a chemise or even a tank top underneath her corset, which only furthers my opinion of their basic incompetence in clotheing actors comfortably and responsibly.)
b) Which leads directly into my other point, which is that the problem with the myths around corsetry--that corsets are, fundamentally, meant to be uncomfortable, and that their primary purpose is to decrease the waist measurement--are not only annoying historical inaccuracies but are causing active damage to actors. If actors--many of whom already have very little body fat to begin with--go into costume fittings expecting to decrease their waist measurement and costumers are too uninformed and incompetent to counteract this, then of course they are going to be uncomfortable. (I am specifically mentioning actors and costumers here, but there could certainly also be influences from directors and other people involved.)
I feel like this is a case where historical accuracy in costuming is not only a matter of aesthetics and authenticity (both of which I think are very important), but also of very basic and practical comfort and safety of actual people playing these roles. If costume designers don’t understand the form and function of historical clothing and undergarments--including not only corsets but also things like hip and bust padding that create shape and form (and tiny-looking waists) without tightlacing--then they will (and do, apparently) put actors in danger of not just discomfort but actual injury.

Kasia tried to warn him he was gonna die. Izek immediately was blinded by rage and did not listen to her. (And then got killed by the party, with Kasia landing the final death blow)
If you wanna read more in depth about it I have it underneath.
For background: Kasia is a priestess in the Church of St Andral in Valaki. She’s lived in the town for most her life, and totally doesn’t harbor secret confusing teenage crush on Izek, shut up. As the party has interacted with Izek and made their life in Valaki rather hellish, the party eventually meets with Fiona Watcher, who tells them of her plans to help keep the guards occupied so that the party has ample time to take care of Izek.
Kasia, being a little baby who didn’t quite understand, did not realized that he plan was to kill him. She realized this way too late into the agreements and had no real opportunity to voice her concerns over actually murdering someone. (she accidentally killed someone like 3 days ago and about got really freaked out ok)
Our halfling rogue also did not trust Fiona’s plan and refused to follow it, so Kasia felt a little emboldened to maybe not act as Fiona’s puppet.
The distraction was going to be letting loose the sabertooth tiger from Rictavio’s wagon. She went to see Rictavio directly and asked him if he knew about the plan/was a part of it. He said no; so she warned him that Fiona was looking to cause trouble using his tiger and he should get it out of Valaki so that he and the tiger can be safe from her machinations.
The party was not happy with her upon learning this, but ultimately had to agree to give her one opportunity to try her best to convince him to leave Valaki. She said no one else need follow her, and that she’d take full blame/fight Izek herself if he refused.
So during the festival of the Blazing Sun the group went about causing their own chaos to distract the guards and try to take care of Izek. Kasia snuck up to him and pleaded as best she could.
(I rolled very VERY poorly on persuasion - not that I think my DM would’ve actually ever had Izek be swayed by her, but hey I tried)
But Izek does not listen, and instead is absolutely enraged by her presence (she has been antagonizing him quite a lot, being annoying/in his way, or just straight up down to fight at any moment, so he really does not like her) and so he fights.
Our party does manage to paralyze him with a poison we crafted and then kill him. Kasia herself was the one to deal the killing blow. And so there she kneels in the rain and mud with his dying corpse in her arms.
“You should have just listened...”
She cries over him as the party proceed to kill the Burgomaster and meet the brides of Strahd (and Escher). She is traumatized by her first intentional kill.
The party leave Valaki

@honorhearted
five days hence the awful night of terror finds the small company nearly rejoined with the larger. washington's detour to meet with the order with a limited routine had resulted with a three day's parting between the two and the survivors of the encampment had required at least a day's worth of respite. the storms and wounded had also provided delay as a march had been commenced. most soldiers remain uncertain about the circumstances of the cursed night, the human mind always seeking out logic to make sense of horrific truth. a surprise attack. the storm distorted what they'd seen. all rational which remains uncorrected. they, aside from tallmadge as the general's other council were not present, do not know washington's reasoning for detouring their path, are not to question it and are fancy to the idea the attack has forced their hand to regroup rather than continue with whatever plans their general held previous. what is noticed, even discussed within hushed tones is the strange group which has joined them.
the pastor easily mingles, prays with men among the trees on the sabbath as they lack any formal house of worship in the field. but the girl, seemingly privy to council's with washington remains upon the fringes of camp. distanced from the men whose gazes linger long enough to unsettle. when she is seen about tallmadge's orphan boy seems to mirror her, finding all manner of questions to present her with and the woman always halts her actions and humors him when she can. he hasn't told anyone about her powers and she wonders if the boy, upon reflection, refrained because he suspected that no one would believe him or was aware enough to fear that someone would. clearly, he was not fearful of her, of this she was thankful. the day prior she had approached the boy herself when she'd witnessed a soldier shove him harshly, kasia having the boy fetch the book he'd been regaling her about so that she might read it to him. and if the soldier had seemed to lose his footing and fall face first into horseshit sometime later it certainly wasn't her doing. except that it very much was.
she's with the boy again now-- a day's journey toward washington's larger encampment suspected-- in the woods a distance from the soldiers and auggie excitedly asking her some query while tallmadge seems to remain upon the fringes. she's sensed him the whole time watching them, though kasia is unsure if he realizes she's aware of him. she has half a mind to call out some comment to tallmadge before she's stopped in her tracks by something a few meters in front of her, arm reaching out to tug auggie to sudden halt. "auggie, i need you to stay right here. do not move, do you understand?" her tone has an edge to it, one which grows more tense when she repeats herself. "auggie, do you understand?" when she finally gets a nod from the boy who seems alarmed by her tone though not unwilling to listen, kasia's face turns in the direction she knows tallmidge is in. looks directly at him. "you need to come here but be careful where you step." she pauses as a wind seems to sweep through the woods, leaves kicking up and strange wooden bundles and white rocks appearing in five distinct areas. "don't step near those alters."
Tumblr media
"i'm going to go over there with mr. tallmadge, auggie. just stay here." she instructs, moving away from the boy once she's sure he will listen and meeting the man in the center of where the alters seem to perimeter. there's dead birds at the foot of trees, now visible from their point of view and a dead baby goat laid out by what seems to be some kind of makeshift map of the area made with rocks and burned paper that seems to have blood drops on it. though burned, it's distinct enough to recognize that it's a map of the land and that markers were placed where the larger encampment was and where the attack happened.
"don't touch anything. this is--- dark magic." there's something in the way she bites out her words, with an ice that speaks to her disgust as she kneels down and observes. "this place has been touched by the devil." someone had committed a dark ritual to devine the camp's location and she suspects to send those enthralled vampires toward them days prior. someone that was in close proximity to where they were headed to meet washington's forces, all implications of which were concerning.
"i can't be certain they are not still close or alerted to us finding this already." there's a growing unease in her speech, in her whole demeanor which is foreign to the confidence she's presented herself with these last days and she realizes, as she looks in auggie's direction and back toward the morbid display on the ground that she's feeling some level of fear. there's too many variables at play and they are so wholly exposed. she does not like this. she doesn't like it one bit.

Magical Forests: A reading list
The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet’s word is law, Immanuelle Moore’s very existence is blasphemy. Her mother’s union with an outsider of a different race cast her once-proud family into disgrace, so Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol, and lead a life of submission, devotion, and absolute conformity, like all the other women in the settlement. But a mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood surrounding Bethel, where the first prophet once chased and killed four powerful witches. Their spirits are still lurking there, and they bestow a gift on Immanuelle: the journal of her dead mother, who Immanuelle is shocked to learn once sought sanctuary in the wood. Fascinated by the secrets in the diary, Immanuelle finds herself struggling to understand how her mother could have consorted with the witches. But when she begins to learn grim truths about the Church and its history, she realizes the true threat to Bethel is its own darkness. And she starts to understand that if Bethel is to change, it must begin with her.
Uprooted by Naomi Novik
Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her. But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.
Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh
There is a Wild Man who lives in the deep quiet of Greenhollow, and he listens to the wood. Tobias, tethered to the forest, does not dwell on his past life, but he lives a perfectly unremarkable existence with his cottage, his cat, and his dryads. When Greenhollow Hall acquires a handsome, intensely curious new owner in Henry Silver, everything changes. Old secrets better left buried are dug up, and Tobias is forced to reckon with his troubled past—both the green magic of the woods, and the dark things that rest in its heart.
The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert
Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: her mother is stolen away-by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.” Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother's tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.
