Mumbo didn’t know much about his species or heritage (long story that i’m sure you can fill in yourself) that made S8 as surprise to everyone including him.

Really he should’ve figured it out when he would randomly get shorter or taller growing up or on hermitcraft (although that did happen less as he got older) that he chalked up to just inaccurate measurements

Or the fact that he once just woke up with bird wings in S6, he honest to god just thought he was really tired and had been around grian too much

Or the fact that when he’s hungry he’ll look more like the animal he last ate, but to be fair no one noticed it either, since it was only really subtle changes, that went away before anyone could really care about the situation

Or the fact that during halloween he didn’t make a costume… like he didn’t realize till after S8 that everyone else just made their costumes. i mean it was the same season he made a working feeling ai in a night, so being good enough at redstone wasn’t the issue (he just set a repeater at the wrong time)

but either way, he’s having fun purposefully shapeshifting to mess around with people. being just a tad taller than anyone remembers, looking more and more like the person he’s conversing with until they notice (he’s done this to iskall more times than either of them can count), or the running experiment he has going with his totally willing and knowing and consenting participant scar, where he pretends to be a different species everytime he sees him (so far he’s been an avian, an enderman, a warden, a vampire (no clue how he got away with that one), and a snail (grian’s idea)).
