Summary: What are Touya’s kisses like when he’s in a relationship?

Warnings: Kinda heavy mentions of insecurities, some suggestive themes but nothing major

Pairing: Dabi (Touya Todoroki) x Gender Neutral! Reader

- I’m not gonna lie, your first few kisses with Touya were very messy and chaotic. I am a firm believer in the inexperienced Touya agenda, and because of his lack of experience, his kisses ended up being very needy, aggressive and sloppy until you showed him what you liked and helped him find better ways to kiss you

- This was not only because of his inexperience, but also because at first, Touya’s kisses weren’t loving like they are now. He still had his walls up when it came to you at first, and though he was starting to let them down, he was still guarded at the time and kissing was mostly a display of base-level attraction and neediness rather than the love and trust he now feels for you

- Now, however, every kiss you share with Touya feels as if he’s desparately, wordlessly pleading with you not to leave him, trying to prove his worth to you with every kiss. And that’s because he is, honestly

- Touya’s beyond petrified of you leaving him, and this is one of the only ways that he allows this insecurity that he typically keeps locked within him show through to you

- When Touya kisses you he also has a tendency to hold on to you really tight, like he’s afraid that somehow you’ll slip through his fingers if he lets go (because he kind of is, like I said before)

- He typically prefers to have one hand cradling the side of your face and the other wrapped around your waist when he takes his time sharing passionate kisses with you, but as long as he’s holding you in some way, he’s typically not too picky

- Obviously his kisses are always very hot, and I mean that literally. Touya can’t really feel anything in the bottom half of his face, so when kisses start getting more intense he’s prone to getting warmer than usual in the bottom half of his face because he literally can’t feel his skin heating up and he just gets too into the moment

- If you have a problem with it just let him know and he’ll take a moment to regulate his temperature, but if you like it, just don’t say anything because he has no clue he does it until you tell him lol

- Touya’s kisses taste like mint most of the time, and that’s because whenever he goes to see you, he always pops a breath mint in his mouth just in case you two end up sharing a kiss (or many)

- His diet is pretty all over the place and mainly consists of whatever’s easiest for him to get ahold of and cook on the fly, so wants to make sure that his diet never gets in the way of you enjoying his kisses and he always keeps his breath nice and minty fresh for you :) (even though he secretly hates the taste of the breath mints lol, he only eats them for your sake)

- When he’s not kissing your lips, Touya’s usually kissing along your neck, or surprisingly your hand

- He thinks neck kisses are really hot, and he really enjoys both giving and receiving them. Whenever he has access to your neck he definitely takes advantage of it lol (and he always makes sure to wear clothes that give you access to his neck whenever you’d like for the same reason)

- Hand kisses are typically reserved for when he’s feeling incredibly soft and loving, the rare moments when Touya feels completely at peace

- Moments like when you help bathe him in the evening after returning from a long, brutal mission or when the two of you finally get a chance to sleep in and relax together on your rare day off, he’ll take your hand and gently press a kiss on the back of your palm or on your wrist as a sweet, loving gesture

- Touya will absolutely never admit this to you, but you make him the most flustered when you press kisses to his nose. It’s so gentle and pure and the gesture always catches him off guard and leaves him a flustered mess, sputtering and struggling to get words out, though he’d be beyond embarrassed if you ever called him out on it

- But in all honesty, Touya’s just happy whenever he receives kisses from you or gets the opportunity to kiss you in general. He still has no clue how he got so lucky to have someone as amazing as you in his life, and he cherishedsevery single kiss he shares with you in hopes that he’ll never have to say goodbye to the precious kisses you share together <3

A/N: Y’all I swear I am working on requests I have in my inbox as well, I’ve just been super busy and life’s been really hectic recently! Somtimes the heart just wants what it wants, and in this case all my heart has wanted for the past few days is Touya Todoroki (and Rody Soul lol, so be on the lookout for some potential headcanons for him in the near future) so I just had to write these lol. I have a really busy week coming up, but after this week’s over I should have some more time to write, so hopefully I’ll be posting more often again after this week! I have a few angsty/comfort requests that are gonna take a while to finish so now I'm taking a break by writing slightly shorter HCs of the brothers and nowdateables, I've had these asks sitting in my inbox for so long-I am genuinely sorry ;-;

Characters: Lucifer, Mammon, Levi, Satan, Asmo, Beel, Belphie, Diavolo, Barbatos, Simeon, Solomon, Luke

Warnings: Just mild cursing

Lucifer:

-Lucifer feels pretty neutral about tattoos in general

-Since they have been popular for a long time now, it wouldn’t be his first time seeing a human with a tattoo and honestly has no impact on him at the beginning of the programme because it’s just a quirky human thing y’know

-Demons can technically get tattoos but there is no point since many of them can shapeshift anyway and their human forms can have any number of oddities such as piercings or tattoos

-It's mostly a human thing, turns out we started the whole 'injecting ourselves with ink to see how it goes' trend and kinda ran for the fields with it-demons and angels don't really see the appeal

-Once he warms up to you, if you explain the reasoning or meaning behind it (whether you had it in memory of someone or just because you liked the design) he might actually appreciate it a bit more

-At the end of the day, he thinks it adds to your character and it also indirectly tells him something about you in general, which is a subject he is more than just a little interested in

-He doesn't understand it but he thinks it looks good on you and if you like it then who is he to judge?

Mammon:

-Honestly, he thinks it's one of the coolest things about you, even though he'd drop dead before admitting this to your face

-Even if it's a really simple, small tattoo he's going to internally fawn over it because, in his eyes, it makes you look badass af

-Lowkey offended you've been hiding this from him for so long

-Actually, you might just persuade him to get one himself and knowing him, he would totally go over the top with it

-I mean, think about it, if he hasn't already Mammon is definitely the type of person to get sleeves of tattoos and look hot whilst doing it

-100% would get matching tattoos with you, would not even hesitate and it seems like a good idea except you'd inflate his head bigger than it already is so-

-Is a dumbass and would probably try to colour in the tattoos if they are accessible to him at any given moment and he happens to have sharpies on him

Levi:

-You know, funnily enough, I think Levi would look really good with tattoos, especially if he got some that were related to either his sin or water

-But an MC with a tattoo would absolutely amaze him since it definitely gives off protagonist vibes and he will probably find a way to relate you back to almost every anime he's ever watched that happened to have a character with a tattoo in it

-Honestly, he'd be more than willing to listen to you about the meaning or origin behind your tattoo/s if you feel like disclosing it to him (or if there is a meaning) since you often listen to his rants without a second thought and he wants to return the favour

-Actually, you might encourage him enough to get his own

-But I wouldn't count on it for the foreseeable future, he was kind of put off by what sounds like a painful procedure and thought of his brothers never letting him hear the end of it

-Also, he is part of the military and I like to think that, for disciplinary reasons, members might have a strict dress code (then again they are demons so probably not)

-Either way, he likes tattoos and even though he gets a tad too excited when you start telling him about your own and might ask some personal questions, he has good intentions

Satan:

-Kinda in the same boat as Lucifer though don’t tell him I said that

-He has many human acquaintances and seems to be on good terms with many of them so it’s more than likely he has met several people with tattoos in the past

-He didn’t expect you to have any, naturally but when he finds out about it, he’s pretty chill though he might try to make small talk and ask what it symbolises, etc.

-Sometimes, if you’re sitting close to him whilst reading or something, and your tattoo is accessible (like on your forearm) then he might trace it with his own hand absentmindedly

-Weirdly enough, I also think he’d like seeing his pact mark somewhere near your tattoo-there’s no real reason for this I just thought he’d be into that

-I think maybe sometimes he uses the physical appearance of someone to judge and analyse them as if he was Sherlock Holmes so that might happen during your first couple of days in Devildom 😭😭

-Other than that, he doesn’t think about it or bring it up all that much. He’s usually too distracted by your annoyingly attractive face y’know

Asmo:

-You already know where I’m going with this one

-There’s no way in Hell that Asmo is not the type to flirt and use your tattoos as a reason for that

-This might not sound right but, like Mammon, I also think he’d have a tattoo if possible though definitely not whole sleeves. More like small tattoos on his ankles or wrists

-He would definitely get tattoos for the aesthetic rather than the actual meaning behind it because he wants to look good for his Devilgram story and the tattoo needs to fit whatever theme he’s obsessed with

-But when it comes to you, no matter what tattoo or how big or small it is, he immediately finds it endearing

-Whilst his brothers are mostly in the neutral zone about this kinda thing I feel like Asmo would 100% encourage and support you getting one even if you don’t have one already

-And then obviously, all further shopping trips and the type of clothes he’s gonna get you will be altered with the tattoos in mind in order to show them off as often as possible

Beel:

-I just hope you don’t have a tattoo of a certain type of food anywhere on your body because that might trigger him

-Especially at the beginning, he’s already watering at the thought of eating you so a tattoo of a burger or something would not help

-Otherwise, he also sort of falls in the neutral category when it comes to tattoos

-After all, he didn’t start hanging out with you because of your accessories, regardless of how cool they are

-Then again, he is interested in you and therefore, once you’re more comfortable with each other, I see him as the type to ask quiet but sweet questions about any tattoos you might have

-Like he might talk about his past and then conversation may lead to you getting that tattoo in the past for whatever reason

-Just really little things that he’ll remember and then surprise you with next time you talk

-Also, he’d be hesitant to get one himself but he’d look good with it. Like really good. Just wanted to point that out

Belphie:

-He sort of hated it at the beginning but that’s only because he hated you 💀

-Once he stops acting like a little bitch he becomes a lot more neutral about it

-Or at least he says he’s indifferent towards it but you’re starting to think he’s lying because every time he falls asleep now, his head happens to lean against your tattoo

-He still likes his pact mark better

-I like to think that Belphie would also look good with tattoos but I really don’t think he’d get any just because he couldn’t be bothered

-If you like talking about yours though, he encourages it because your voice whilst you speak about anything but especially if it’s about you puts him to sleep like nothing else (in a good way, he loves it)

-Might also have tried to colour your tattoo in but not because he’s an idiot. He’s just a mischievous little shit

Diavolo:

-Naturally, he assumes it’s part of human culture and will be as interested in it as every other aspect regarding you

-In fact, you could probably feel him marvel at your tattoo from miles away and he always compliments it if he happens to pass you by in the corridors

-Though he was definitely confused about it when he first learned tattoos were a thing, he didn’t really get it but it doesn’t matter!

-He would sympathise if he learned that getting one hurts quite a bit but eventually he’d convince himself he’d want to get one himself

-And he’s dead serious about it too but thankfully Barbatos puts a stop to it by reminding him that maybe the future ruler of Devildom shouldn’t go too crazy with tattoos

-He might get small ones to match with yours but either way he will be fascinated by the meaning behind yours (if there is one)

-I’d see him as the type to also trace it with his hands but out of curiosity on how it feels more than anything and he always asks first cuz polite prince things yk

Barbatos:

-He gives off this air of aloofness which you interpret as disinterest when in reality it’s politeness that is holding him back from asking you about it

-Of course, unless you bring the conversation to focusing on your tattoo, he feels he has no right to comment (this tbh would include stuff like dyed hair, piercings, etc.)

-And obviously, being the mysterious butler he is, he’d much rather hear you talk about yourself so the meaning behind your tattoo is a perfect example of leading the spotlight away from him

-Still, he can’t say he doesn’t find your tattoo/s endearing but I believe that is simply because he finds all of you endearing so eh

-Though you noticed that whenever your tattoo is on display in public he does tend to stare at it sometimes when he is not need by Lord Diavolo

-He’d also be the type to trace it, I think. It feels like it would relax him or something idk, maybe I’m pulling at straws here

-He’s probably not overly fond of tattoos in general but honestly you rock everything you wear and that includes tattoos so he’s not complaining

Solomon:

-He’s just annoying bruh

-Like, he does not understand personal space (something that even Mammon has understood to an extent) and will ask as many personal questions as possible within a 60 second interval

-Obviously he backs off and apologises if he makes you uncomfortable but he does the thing where he clearly stares at something without saying anything

-And you have to ask if he wants something and then he goes “How long have you had this tattoo for?” Or something similar to that

-And that’s another thing-the questions he asks about it are so bloody random. Like “What nationality was your tattooist?” And “What was the weather like when you got it” which is just weird

-I think he’d have a couple of tattoos of his own but I don’t think you’d be able to tell them apart from the dozens of pact marks he has with other demons

-He won’t talk about his but if you’re willing to talk about yours without shutting him down then he’s all ears

Simeon:

-See I’m conflicted about this

-Because as an angel, I don’t think he’d be particularly supportive of tattoos mostly because he would maybe think that they are staining your beautiful skin or something

-But on the other hand, he’s down bad for you and for some reason, tattoos look a lot better on you than they do on others he’s seen

-Of course, he’s very complimentary when he first met you about it and asked small, polite questions but never intruded unlike a certain someone *coUGH COuGH-solomon-COUgh*

-Once the two of you grow closer, his curiosity might might get the better of him and he would feel more comfortable talking about stuff like that in general

-It was kind of a big thing about you at first but the more time he spends in your presence, the more accustomed he gets to it-meaning it no longer stands out to him all that much

-Will probably stare as well but unlike that embarrassing sorcerer, he actually would get pretty flustered about it

Luke:

-He’s never seen a tattoo in his life

-He’s quite young and hasn’t had many interactions with humans before ok, give him a break

-You were the first person with a tattoo he’s ever met and he is confused beyond measurement

-“Simeon why does the human exchange student have drawings on their skin?”

-He doesn’t want to be rude obviously but he questions it the same way most children would 😭😭😭

-He doesn’t think it’s bad or anything but it’s kinda like tasting a new type of food and trying to decide whether it’s good or not

-He’s very curious about it but Simeon told him not to ask anything personal unless you gave the green light for that to happen

-Obviously his whole reaction would be what you would expect a child’s to be, a lot of staring but it’s not malicious and he’s definitely all about finding out more about it if you’re willing to tell him. He does think they look good on you

Gotham

- Considering the canon (that I ignore mostly because it's done so poorly) that hes got a split personality he's talked to, it probably wouldn't go well? Lots of animosity. Like a dog growling at its reflection.

- IGNORING THAT THOUGH. He'd start quizzing him and giving him riddles since this is obviously a fake. A trick someone is playing on him.

- if he found out it was real, he'd be super apologetic and calling him Mr.

- oh god does that mean there's actors for penguin and zsasz as well? They must be more pleasant than the on screen counterparts, at least.

60s

- Between Edward's riddles and puns and Mr. Gorshins stand up, the crime fighting duo is going to be seeing double! But this isn't about them.

- given this riddler is kind of a cinemaphile, there would be so many acting questions. Favorite movie? Who is the most famous person he's worked with (besides him, obviously)? He's quite good at acting and impressions himself, as Frank Gorshin would already know.

Zero year

- Get fucked, Edward, you have no VA or actor. That will however not stop him from harassing the writer and artist. His plan was failproof! How did this GUY beat him? And he can't just read who Batman is because then it'll be like he couldn't figure it out on his own. Ugh!

- He is going to red marker a copy of Zero Year showing every unflattering panel. See that expression where it looks like he has a double chin? That has to go, fellas!

- He tells them to do a better job next time. Because there WILL be a next time. He's simply the best riddler there could be! And no, not with the mohawk, get that out of here.

BTAS

- Civilized conversation after a brief "How strange, you can imitate me- OH-" Well, perhaps you should have pushed for more riddler episodes. His brilliant mind should be on display after all!

- sorry its been...... its been how many years since the show has been on...? Of COURSE he knew that. It was just a surprise hearing it. Right now.

- well. Other than that, he's going to ask about the family, his husband, as is only polite. Then about the other voices. Working with them and-

- sorry, joker is luke skywalker?

Telltale

- It should only make sense that his voice actor should be so skilled with a long variety of credits. Perhaps he has this skill as well and he didn't even realize it!

- German is a surprising accent he didn't know he could do. That will definitely come into play at a later date if he needs to hide his voice.

Arkham

- He can't handle this. The realization he's just pixels in programming- He's so much GRANDER than this! Yes, yes, you've done a great job, whatever, he has much more concerning things to deal with. He'll spare you, Wally, simply because without you his voice wouldn't be.

- this ultimately turns into him becoming the nastiest virus that figures out how to spread to any device that can access wifi. In this new world, there's nothing he can't see or control...

2022

- honestly I think he'd be terrified. Who is this well-adjusted man with his face? He's an ACTOR? People pay to see this face? His worthless, disgusting-

- wait he has fans?

- it all goes downhill from there. Abduction, probably like when Joker abducted Mark Hamil in that one special.

- He will flip when he finds out Paul Dano wrote his origin comics. Someone who knows him so well better than ANYONE else on this wretched world.

i ought to get better at writing down my thoughts so i actually remember them. anyway, it's kashiwagi time again. strap yourselves in cause this is going to be very long & punctuated with discord screenshots

i've discovered recently that people seem to like it when i lay my thoughts out on him, which is honestly wild to me but here we are. like i say, i'd like to put my ideas somewhere i can actually access them somewhat easily instead of peppered randomly through two or three discord threads and my own tumblr tags, so this post will probably function as my own personal meta archive for him, because i'm allergic to tables and spreadsheets and i don't really want to rely on google drive any more than i am already.

(speaking of google drive, i have a repository here of most of kashiwagi's audio files. refer to the readme document for the reasons it's not all of them for now)

>the basics?

i'll start with his age because that's at the forefront of my mind at the moment. i like to think he's in the ballpark of 10 years older than kiryu and nishiki, which would put him around six years older than majima, two years older than adachi, and 13 years younger than kazama. thusly, with a calculated birth date of around 1958, discounting birth month, he is (approximately):

30 in yakuza 0 (1988)

37 at the start of yakuza 1 (1995)

47 through the rest of yakuza 1, after kiryu gets out on parole (2005)

48 in yakuza 2 (2006)

51 in yakuza 3/when he "dies" (2009) (also goes grey around this time, maybe the year before)

61 in yakuza: like a dragon & gaiden (2019)

66-ish in rgg8 (2024).

(this list has been incredibly helpful to me actually because my original thought was that he was eight years older than the boys... that would put him at the same age as adachi, which i'm not a huge fan of)

next up, sexuality - i think he's (almost) exclusively attracted to other men, with yayoi being an exception that proves the rule.

however, my idealised "ship" "timeline" for him is that he's with kazama until kazama gets naded, then does some FWB shit with majima until he himself "dies", then somewhere down the line after opening the bar ends up in a slow-burning "friend"ship with adachi, because who better to take out for dinner than the strapping old geezer in the glasses who serves you drinks and keeps a watchful eye on your extensive tab?

next, i think he's definitely nd. which is something you can say for most characters in this series in some way, but he has an interesting relationship with food (not just limited to what he eats, but how), is shown infodumping on several occasions, hardly if ever switches up what he wears (at most, colours), flat affect/resting bitch face/autism stare, hires extra staff at his hobby bar so that he doesn't have to speak to his customers as much, and behind his intimidating mask he has this awkward kind of energy that reminds me a lot of my own experiences with being a bit not-normal. he probably has an oral fixation.

also, sort of crack but also not, i enjoy the idea that he's light sensitive (or at least moreso than kiryu is):

>the meat

he is very highly strung - we see this on multiple occasions. he seems visibly less so after "dying" in 2009, so i'm chalking it up to the stress of having to run things as someone who has the right mentality for leadership (the other patriarchs call him "soft" in y3 for trying to resolve conflicts rather than fostering them) but just doesn't enjoy doing it. he does exceptionally well as kazama's number two, but in yakuza 0 while kazama is in jail, and in yakuza 2 after kazama dies and he inherits the family (and clan captainship), he seems very stressed out. i absolutely think that his reputation for lashing out and his "violent" disciplinary methods are due in part to stress shortening his fuse (with the latter also being learned behaviours from kazama - an old school yakuza & assassin). age and the experience of staring death and a CIA attack helicopter in the face also definitely play a part in mellowing him out.

on kazama, i'm shamelessly stealing inoue's reasons for joining the shinsengumi and applying that to kashiwagi, because, while i don't really think of them as the same guy, there is absolutely a reason they chose him specifically as inoue's bakumatsu face claim. i don't have many ideas as to what kashiwagi did before swearing up, but he's a man of debts and undying loyalty, so i believe kazama must have saved him or turned his life around in such a way that he felt he could do nothing but pledge himself to him. i also really enjoy the idea of kazama having given him his scar, but i'm not 100% on how that might have come around either.

to extrapolate even more bullshit headcanon from insignificant canon details, i think in the 80s he was a beginner hobbyist keyboard player. mostly looking at the judgement cinematic where he's not plugged in and playing a little out of sync BUT still doing whatever fucked up fruity little dance he's doing. the presence of the piano at survive makes me think he got a hell of a lot more into it in his newfound free time, as something else to keep his hands mobile as he ages and recovers from getting shot up by a heli. also, still love the little anecdote we get from iroha when she says he's good with his hands.

in a one-to-one phone conversation with kiryu, his younger brother figure, he calls daigo (with whom he is on a given name basis) 六代目

that moment near the start of y0 where he stares down at kiryu on the street from the family office window

i don't think any of his suits were fitted correctly until kiwami 2 because his jackets ENGLULF him on PS2 & PS3 and he's straight up rectangular in kiwami

fills an empty bottle of high-end whisky with pish to make his bar look more expensive and comes up with an elaborate cover story to stop people from buying it

the way he acts towards his direct authority figures

Baths!

I am obsessed with the idea of baths. (Like, I literally wrote my longest and most involved Starmania fic as a pretext to get Cristal and Johnny in a bathtub.)

But since there are NEVER ENOUGH BATHS, here's some more, in a form that's too disjointed to make it to AO3 for the moment:

I like the idea that there's no running water in the tunnels ("ça c'est la seule chose qu'on a pas") or at least, not enough to go around. In any case, the Zonards definitely don't have access to like, regular showers.

But there are public baths, and so the squad makes a trip after hours like three times a week to one of them for a shower, and sometimes when they have more time a full scrub and soak, and in the meantime they use something else at the hangar for their daily ablutions (or don't, Johnny is a dirty rat boy who probably juste dunks his head in freezing rain water in a bucket once a week and we like that about him.)

But when Cristal joins the gang, somehow she doesn't find out about the baths trips. Maybe Johnny is called away just after he brings her to the hangar, and he tells one of the Etoiles Noires, like "Hey, you get her settled around here, okay?" but the Etoiles Noires decide not to tell Cristal, sort of as a hazing thing -- they can't be thrilled about her arrival, it's their way to make sure she won't stay too long.

Or perhaps Sadia makes a point to keep it from Cristal, thinking it'll discourage her and she'll run off as soon as she's experienced the smallest inconvenience.

So anyway, the only thing Cristal sees in terms of hygiene is everyone chewing toothpaste tablets and splashing themselves with water from a rusty pipe once in a while and she figures, fine, alright, she knew they did things differently in the tunnels, she can tough it out. She doesn't really understand how they're not all *more gross* than they look, or how they can keep their hair as clean as it (mostly) is with the way she sees them deal with it, but she puts it down to experience, and anyway it's not like she can ask them why they don't all smell rank. (It's not like Johnny seems to mind that she's a bit funkier than she's used to these days.)

But it does wear on her anyway, never feeling clean, being self-conscious about how she looks and smells. After like 10 days or so, Johnny comes back from somewhere and finds her soaking wet, teeth chattering, lips blue, as she tries to wash herself with buckets and a trickle of water that's coming from a hose, and he's like, "Wow, you really hate the baths that much?"

And Cristal goes still, like, "Wait, BATHS??" and they figure the thing out.

Johnny noticed she never went with the others on their excursions but he figured she was just shy or uncomfortable being naked in front of relative strangers, or that she was too afraid someone would recognize her, or that her standards were too high and she thought it would be too gross there or something. (Which seemed strange to him because it's not like she's complained about any other aspect of her new life, but who knows... Sometimes people are weird about this kind of stuff. He has his own issues about the baths so he wasn't about to ask.)

So anyway, Johnny goes a little nuts when he finds out his Etoiles Noires did Cristal so dirty (lol, get it?) and summons them to get to the bottom of it. Everyone is very sorry because honestly, Cristal isn't nearly as bad as they thought she would be, but it got just a bit too awkward to bring it up now that they'd lied to her for a while... So anyway, they apologize, and Johnny commands the most remorseful of them to take Cristal to their usual baths once night falls and stand watch outside while she does her thing, to make extra sure no one else comes in or Sadia doesn't try to mess with her again. (He can't go because he's too busy doing... something else. This is why this story is not a real fic, lol.)

And so Cristal goes to the baths with Ruby the Etoile Noire who lends her her kit and shows her how to use the communal showers and then how to turn on the steam room and where the little pool is for afterwards, and Cristal is able to take an actual warm shower for the first time in like 10 days, and the water pressure isn't amazing, and calling the temperature "hot" would be pushing it -- this is still in the worst part of the tunnels, after all -- but it feels like HEAVEN. She washes her hair like three times in a row.

And then she goes into the steam room, and down into the tiny little pool thing that's just big enough for her to let herself float in, and she revels in the privacy and quiet of it -- it's the first time she's been truly alone since she went down into the tunnels on that fateful Friday afternoon. Her whole body goes lax. The only thing missing is...

And then, of course, Johnny shows up!

Maybe he's actually deathly afraid of water and that's why he never goes usually -- maybe he has some water-related trauma, maybe like, his mother drowned, or tried to drown him in an access of madness. Or maybe on the contrary his mother used to bring him to baths just like this one, and the memory is too painful now, idk. In any case, he never ever goes, but he wanted to make sure Cristal was okay, so he comes in to check on her.

And she convinces him to join her, which is not too hard probably because 1) NAKED and 2) ALONE. She brings him back to the showers and "helps" him "wash" until he's all clean and pink (and desperate) and then they make good use of every horizontal (and vertical) surface in the joint (and rinse everything real well afterwards, they're not savages) and then they hang out in the pool and get to touch lazily and cuddle and talk in half-whispers even though they've got more privacy than ever before.

Eventually though they have to get out because the baths are about to open to the public again and they have to get Cristal back to the hangar before she gets spotted, but after that they make a habit of it -- Cristal joins the Etoiles Noires every time they go in a group, and once a week she stays behind and Johnny joins her and they have a little date night.

(And of course because I'm me, I can't help but think about After, once they've run away somewhere together. Maybe they're in the East, and they've also got a huge public bathing culture, and once in a while at night Johnny picks the locks and they slip in and relive their wild hangar days.)

Definitely something that should be mentioned more in canon comics so let’s use this as a manifesting moment by detailing it out 🤭

Right off the bat, I have to make it clear to absolutely everyone that Barry is 100% a Trekkie and Hal is most likely a Star Wars fan. And while we’re on the most heated sci-fi debate, I’ll add that once Hal and Barry became friends and Barry learned more about the Green Lantern Corps he undoubtedly introduced Hal to Star Trek and successfully convinced him that it was the superior sci-fi franchise, we stan two Trekkies 😜

Now then, I don’t think Hal would be very into book series or fantasy in general but he’d definitely have a particular interest in the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy and I think he’d try Game of Thrones and The Witcher because of everyone’s recommendations but would probably not like it very much. He’s the noble-type though and would be pretty easily convinced to read the Lord of the Rings books (including the Hobbit and Silmarillion) because of the nobility of the characters and story. Same reasoning goes for Donita K. Paul’s DragonSpell series. He’d also probably be into the writings of Henry David Thoreau, Ernest Hemingway, and Raymond Carver, not hugely into them necessarily but if he was super bored and he had access to their stuff he’d dig it haha. His favorite poem would also probably be Tennyson’s In Memoriam A.H.H.. I don’t see him being too into podcasts, but he’d definitely like rock bands like Foreigner and AC/DC. He’s also definitely into movies more so than tv shows and would love movies like The Right Stuff, Top Gun, Braveheart, The Patriot, John Wick, most blockbusters classics really, and probably anything with Bruce Lee haha. He’d probably think anime/manga was for nerds until someone pointed out that Dragon Ball Z was, in fact, an anime then he’d realize they can be pretty cool hahaha. And with video games, I’d say he absolutely doesn’t have the patience for long form RPGs but can probably be convinced to play some FPSs with friends like Call of Duty and Halo lol. Basically, this was a long way of saying that Hal is probably more sporty, not in an obsessive fan of sports way, mind you, just that he participated in mostly sports growing up and even as an adult probably prefers hanging out playing baseball with kids (Adams’ GL run has an adorable scene of just that) rather than watching/reading/listening to anything so essentially he’s just not very media-obsessed; he’s a doer! He also probably wouldn’t participate in the fandoms of any of the media he does consume because he cares more about engaging with the media itself rather than about others’ thoughts and feelings on it haha.

Onto Barry, honestly, Barry is kind of tougher for me to figure out purely because I feel like he and I are very similar so I’m inclined to list basically all my favorite things and my thought processes haha, but I’ll try to avoid doing that 😝. So, like I said, Barry is definitely a Trekkie, the Federation’s belief in preserving alien lives and lifestyles plus its dedication to exploration and science all appeals to his inner nerd. He probably loves the shows For All Mankind, The X-Files, and Bones because of their science-y natures (he definitely introduced Hal to For All Mankind and it’s one of the shows they watch together haha). We all know he’s a huge comic book fan (shout-out to Pre-Crisis that had him reading Golden Age Flash comics 😜), but I’ll also add that I think this love of Golden Age Flash, thanks to his mom, would have led to his own love of Greek and Roman mythology once he realized where the idea for Jay Garrick’s helmet and shoes came from! A love of mythology would eventually lead to a love of ancient western philosophy and writings then to Medieval romances like the Arthurian legends and the works of Chaucer. Old English stuff would’ve crept in there too starting with Beowulf. He was an old soul from a young age so all these things would’ve caught his eye on trips to the library and the old-fashioned romantic notions and chivalry has definitely stayed with him. All this appreciation for much older works would then slingshot back around to him loving and appreciating more modern works that took heavy inspiration from all this older literature like The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, the Percy Jackson series, the Harry Potter series, the Codex Alera, and the Dresden Files, oh and all the detective novels, just all, from Doyle, Christie, Poe, Hammett, etc. then when he found foreign detective fiction he’d go mental and just read them all haha. He’d also probably read the Remo Williams and Jack Reacher book series and convince Hal to do the same! I’d say he’s also into old movies and classic tv shows because they all make him feel good with their sweet morals and happy endings. He’s probably not much of a gamer except for the ones with good stories, he’s too interested in learning new things to just watch someone else play though, if a game’s story interests him then he’s definitely playing it himself. Mass Effect is probably one of his secret favorites. He’s super into podcasts, anything informational and/or scientific, probably conspiratorial and/or true crime stuff, too, if for nothing else than to help him get inspiration on how to approach his own cases, he may even try and solve some cold cases that he hears about (he’d probably stumble across Black Box Down then convince Hal to listen with him haha). He definitely grew up with both the Pokémon TCG and show and was actually aware that it was an anime so is likewise somewhat into other very popular anime/manga like Naruto. Music would be jazz (he’d try and fail to get Hal into it, too, see: New 52 Flash’s Annual #2), 60s rock like the Beatles and the Monkees, and probably 80s pop like the Culture Club, oh and Air Supply (which is also Hal’s guilty pleasure band hehe). He likes sports a lot, both playing and watching, but was still more likely to be found reading/watching/listening to something rather than playing; still, the same way Hal can be convinced to play a video game in order to hangout with friends, Barry can be easily convinced to join in some sporty endeavors if it’ll mean bonding with a friend or loved one. Finally, like Hal, I don’t see him engaging too much with fandoms, he’d probably try when he was younger but wouldn’t find too many people who were into the same things then when he did find people things would devolve into arguments instead of just joy for whatever the thing was so he eventually would resign himself to just enjoying the thing itself, our Barry is a soft boy 🥹. He likes discussion though so once he found people who were his safe space they wouldn’t be able to get him to shut up hahaha.

I was just going to name a few popular franchises that each would be into, but then I started thinking about mediums and how they’d appreciate different ones and then… all this came out lmao 😅😂. I apologize for the long walls of text! Just remember: this is your fault 😜

(Note: forgot to say, Barry would 100% be into Jurassic Park (books and movies) and would convince Hal to read the books (he definitely already watched and loved the movies)!

Yes I stayed up late reading Insects and Pyre until I fell asleep with my phone on my face and woke up early to finish the fic. And OMG IT'S SO GOOD. It's interesting to read Dabi wanting to do what's right even when he wants something else so strongly, knowing that he would canonically choose to take his revenge and do whatever he needed to do to get there. I had to remind myself a few times that he's not a villain in this story lol. I also noticed how you said sutures instead of staples in this fic, probably because he wasn’t on the run and had access to proper medical attention instead of having to staple his seams together himself or go to an underground doctor for it.

I already LOVE the idea of Moth! Tomura before reading the fic, but him as a god as well? OBSESSED. It's sad how he's been locked away on his own land for centuries by people who stole what belonged to him. Ngl I wouldn't have minded if he did end up killing everybody in his forest (except Dabi ofc) and took back what was his. And the fact that he gave up after so long was so sad :(. Poor baby just wanted his land back but instead settled for making his cave as similar to what he used to have as possible.

Tomu had been alone for most of 300 years and fell in love with Dabi in just a week. And Dabi, isolated even when he was in his village and who had never loved anyone romantically, absolutely fell in love with the god who treated him better than anyone had in a decade.

Even though Tomura stopped Dabi from feeding the runestone and trapping him for another year, still let him choose whether he wanted to sacrifice himself and save his village or not. Since he had been watching Dabi since the start, I think he understood him enough to know what he truly wanted, and that it wasn’t to die for the people who had treated him unkindly all his life, especially Endeavor. He wanted to save Dabi just as much as he wanted to free himself and was willing to hold back his revenge just so that Dabi could escape with Rei and Fuyumi. The way he was so desperate for him not to sacrifice himself was so bittersweet and I think I died a little when Dabi kept asking him to stop because he knew that he couldn't do it himself.

Istg I wanted to kill Endeavor when he stabbed Dabi when he tried to burn the plant. I mean I kind of expected it (since nothing ever goes my poor baby's way), but I was still pissed and was so glad that he got to kill his father in the end. But him burning his arm off probably wasn't the best thing to ever happen to him, though.

The way Tomu was so scared of losing Dabi is honestly heartbreaking. Poor baby has been alone for so long and has had all his land stolen from him and was terrified of losing the one he loved too. It wasn’t a huge surprise when he made Dabi immortal. Him giving up his vengeance showed just how much he cared about Dabi. He chose to save him even if it meant forgiving the ones who kept him trapped for centuries. Dabi was definitely in love with him after that. He has never had anyone love and care about him so much in so long that getting so much of it after a decade probably had him hooked immediately.

Why did Dabi grow wings after becoming immortal though? I figured that it was because it was Tomura who gave him immortality but it wasn’t said that he had the fur around his neck or the antennas. I’m also curious how you would picture Tomu’s actual God form? It’s mentioned that gods take on and mimic forms of animals, but I wonder what his godly one would be like, and also Dabi’s?

Anyway, this is such a precious fic and it’s totally going into my bookmarks folder. I’m definitely going to cherish it and read it again soon. My fav scene is obv when Tomu stopped Dabi from touching the stone. The Firefly’s tears broke my heart and the scene’s just so emotional but adorable all at the same time. Another masterpiece!! <3

As for Dabi's final appearance, the wings are an aspect of godhood. All gods in this world have wings in some form or another to show their divinity. Dabi's took on the appearance of a firefly's (hence the lack of moth ruff) because that's the form Tomura was thinking of when he bestowed him with his aspect. However, Dabi's body and his magic were still tied more used to being mortal, since that's the form he's held all his life, and that just tried to restore him as much as it could to the way he was before. He managed to fix his missing arm in his sleep, and over the years if he wants to he will be able to grow back his skin and take away his scars as well as change the appearance of his wings, but he probably won't much, his lover is already accepting of his appearance, that's gonna help him accept it a lot more too

Kenjaku & His Emotional Attachments: An Analysis

Kenjaku is a character with a lot more emotional depth than a lot of the fandom tends to give him credit for. He's peculiar in the sense that he's an incredibly charismatic and lively character who seems to push back against any notion of being close to someone.

I joke with my friends sometimes that Kenjaku is a Tsundere™ but I do think that holds some weight to it. Not in the traditional meaning of the word, mind you, but I have noticed that his words don't always align with his actions

In his battle against Choso, he refers to Yūji as a "thing" and claims he doesn't have any real plans for him. Despite this, not only did Kenjaku go out of his way to kill the ones who ordered Yūji's execution, he personally thanked Sasaki for being kind to "his son."

We see the same treatment extended to Tengen. He refers to her as an "it" or a "thing" just as he did with Yūji, but as soon as he's alone with her after defeating Choso and Yuki, he refers to her as a friend

Angel, in a previous chapter, refers to Kenjaku as a social chameleon with a forked tongue —

— and I think that's spot on. Kenjaku is a people person. He's not just the manipulative villain pulling the strings from behind for his own curiosity. He actively enjoys living, and I imagine that same zest for life extends to people as well. He almost reminds me of Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist in that aspect. He isn't a good man, but he is nice and honestly very likable.

He has more layers and complexity to his emotions than people give him credit for, but I think part of it is because he himself is so adverse to getting close to people. He's charming and can be polite, but we haven't seen him make any real, deep connections with his current allies.

I think he's scared in some way. He gets connected to a few people without meaning to, namely Yūji and Tengen (who he obviously has history with) and it seems his knee-jerk reaction is to deny that he actually cares for someone, even if it's a twisted version of love

He may have been burned in the past and, as a result, puts up walls to ensure he doesn't get hurt. That, or perhaps he realized getting attached when you're essentially immortal, is foolish, or maybe he really has lived so long it's harder for him to access those emotions

That aside, you can't convince me that a character who is steeped in depictions of motherhood and fertility wouldn't have an attachment to the one child he personally carried and birthed. It might not be a conscious decision on his part, but he definitely feels something for Yūji

Gege always goes the extra mile to humanize his villains. They're treated as real people who, despite their crimes, are still capable of feeling and of having some positive interactions with others. Kenjaku is no exception.

He's still deeply threatening, powerful, and villainous while showcasing a more human side to himself because at the end of the day, that's what he is: a human.

Lo and behold, half-naked agent and half-naked Fawn get found by the entire team and half the fucking Proctor staff, as well as the SECOND-IN-COMMAND OVER THE ENTIRE ADVOCACY LOCATION THEY WERE AT.

Needless to say, Freja had a lot to say. Both in the room and after.

I was rewatching the 4.1 trailer again (I just keep going back to it again and again because it's so good? The music?? The characters??? I WANT TO PLAY THE ARCHON QUEST RN SO BAD guess who'll be counting down days and then hours and then minutes until the update haha....)

So! My observations! (in brackets are what should be the timestamps of what I'm referring to/quoting, fyi):

(0:26) I can’t be mistaken, that voice in the beginning is Neuvillette's, and he says "I will arrange false charges against you so that you may secretly investigate inside the Fortress." What made me confused initially was, The Neuvillette— The Chief Justice— was pretty much doing something against the "laws he holds so dear" (not that I'm saying he's "stone hearted" and all that most assume of him, it's just that it feels wrong, to me at least. Neuvillette as I perceived was someone who would uphold the laws, but never at the cost of an innocent's life and yeah, yeah I get the whole deal with Navia's dad is contradictory, but look at Childe's case Neuvillette apologised to the unconscious Harbinger: "I am sorry. I believe Neuvillette is being wronged with the whole "Melusines can't be trusted! The same goes for Neuvillette!" like no, just no... But then the Melusines were 'born' from an Abyssal Monster aka Elynas....

Additionally: (2:55) Lyney asks "where did you take my siblings!?" Siblings, as in plural, perhaps the other orphans from the House of the Hearth who might have been sent to infiltrate the Fortress of Meropide??

(3:00) "Since they have no way to dispose of the leftover remains, they have ways to transform them into other forms and keep them in the Fortress forever" words by Wrio which hints that the "siblings" (if not someone else) Lyney mentioned might have been dissolved which is very scary since it means that this Primordial Sea water is now rather... accessible if I must say. (Like initially, I didn't care... not that I actually didn't, but morelike "meh, it would be taken care of by the traveller" because! that place where Traveller found the Primordial Sea water, it was like a tiny lake thingy, so I was thinking it wouldn't suddenly multiply and flood all of Fontaine... right?)

(3:06) Wrio is running away from a flood of Water of the Primordial Sea in the Fortress (it's kinda blue-purple, beautiful, glowy liquid so it's definitely not just some crack in the wall), whiiiiich kinda pretty much tells us of what was flowing in those pipes someone tells us to stay away from (I mean what else would be in pipes? Some kind of gas? Okay. The Primordial Sea water? Heck, yeah.) Okay, moving on,

(3:06) Neuvillette enters the Fortress and boom—(3:28) Neuvillette using what looks like a great amount of power (or he's just simply impressive in whatever he does... okay jokes aside,) to dispel the Water of the Primordial Sea.

So, Neuvillette is able to dispel the Primordial Water, but (3:55) it also looks surrounded at the same time??? And is that Furnina's voice? (If it is, it makes me wonder if she will be alright because I've been getting anxious from her lines (3:18) "Who are you? What are you trying to do? Please don’t kill me, I'm beggining you..." She's the Hydro Archon, for her to feel threatened, it's worrisome...) and what does it mean: "you will see much in the human world from the delightful, to the depressing... And one day, when you have dwelt among humanity long enough, you will be placed to bring judgement over all, as the spokesperson for Fontaine's past"?

Honestly, the more I listen to it, the more it makes me feel it isn't Furina's voice. But anyways I'll just consider that it could be her and will present to you 3 possible explanations for that dialogue (I could be horribly wrong):

One: it was Furina and she said that to Neuvillette (in the scenario where she must exhaust her powers to somehow prevent the Primordial Sea water from dissolving her people)

Two: it was said to Neuvillette but by the Previous Hydro Archon. It makes sense, him being (speculated, though at this point its basically a fact) the Hydro Dragon and having existed prior to Furina and alongside the previous Hydro Archon. And the part, "placed to bring judgement to all, as the spokesperson for Fontaine's past", could refer to him becoming the Chief Justice, someone who upholds the law as well as have memory of Fontaine's pasts

And lastly, the third possibility: it was said to the Traveller by... someone. The traveller is someone who isn't bound to the laws of Teyvat, and essentially, Irminsul. And tampering with Irminsul would have history changed, but the traveller will know (as we've seen with the whole Greater Lord Rukkhadevata and The Balladeer stuff). The traveller is essentially a witness (if you want to know more about this, I suggest you could watch this video if you had time to spare: the video). But if it was told to the Traveller, the whole judgement thing doesn't work out... unless the traveller of course decided to rebel against Furina because of her "failing to take action as an Archon", unlikely if I must say... (but then again, we did kind of rebel against Ei in Inazuma, but that would be repetitive too).

Sorry for the long rant hehe...

imma be real with you chief, i don't think its useful to make any kind of concrete predictions, esp lore ones, based on trailers. genshin trailers are notoriously cut v misleadingly, just to hook you with shock value. they put together visuals that have nothing to do with audio, like they'll show u boss battle with dramatic music and audio is gonna be like "oh no!! Traveler is DYING, someone help!!!" and then turns out audio is from joke part of the quest where traveler pretends to drown

that said, i think we'll get info on Neuvillette and i personally think its connected to former hydro archon and the fact that like half of oceanids left fontaine bc waters are "corrupted". idk if he existed before furina did tho. bc he's mentioned to appear about around time furina does, by the Narzissenkreuz director frex, who calls him "new Iudex" at the moment of time when furina builds opera house. so he was AT LEAST not a public figure before. and from that trailer audio about like living among humans and making judgement, it might be that he only appeared when furina became archon.

So I Finally Read 'Quest For Lost Powers' (Commentary Part 1; Prologue)

I knew this book existed for about a few months now, and only now have I picked it up.

I actually don't touch the Ninjago books, cause I just assumed they were all supplemental. But no, there's some canon content in these books apparently. There's The Dark Islands, which I haven't read. And there's Way of the Departed, which I DID read, but is very questionable if its canon or not.

This? 100% it's canon apparently.

Ngl, even if this ends up being the best book ever made, I can't help but hate this book because of what it represents.

Because it's promoting the idea that you have to pay money for a book to understand the context of a TV show. When you could very easily just make this canon knowledge that is VITAL TO THE PLOT, IN THE SHOW. It's not hard!

Or at least, make it a special! Like an hour long special. Like Day of the Departed. I may not like Day of the Departed, but people have better access to viewing that for canon context.

(I mean, it's harder to find in English because... ghosting a canon event, but you know what I mean)

Half of the fans of Ninjago don't even read the books. Because they're usually not necessary.

In my opinion, people who see the show should be able to get ALL the context and plot points they need IN THE SHOW. And the book/other content is purely optional if they're still hungry after dinner. Like dessert.

(My GF had no access to Day of the Departed, so she just jumped right into Season 7. So she missed context on how Cole became human again. So she just assumed it all happened off screen.)

This book's existence contradicts that idea, and I don't like that. Regardless of the book's quality, I don't encourage this to keep happening.

And honestly, I hope they DO make a special of this book. Because stories like this were apparently not good enough for the show?

If you don't read this book, you go from 'the ninja sacrificed their powers' to 'the ninja can still use their powers no problem'. Before I even knew this book existed, I thought it was just a hibernation of their powers that got awoken in time. Like they said in Crystalized.

This kinda goes for my ideas on my Crystalized rewrite, Crystalized Redemption, I don't even like that the thing they had to sacrifice was their powers in the first place. It was overdone in the show and at that point there was no stake to them losing it. Plus their powers kind of burdened them with ninja responsibility for so long that it seemed like a happier ending for them to lose it. (Except for Kai and his whiny self) Plus the lore reason why they lost it was just... left field. Out of nowhere. They literally just CHANGED the established lore rules on how the Golden Weapons work, just so the ninja didn't DIE. Because had they not changed the rules, that's what would've happened.

Yeah I'm definitely changing that in the rewrite to not break rules just to make the happiest ending possible. You want to open the door to a happy ending? You gotta have the key to that fit in the lock. You don't just smash the door down.

In fact, in my first outline, they don't sacrifice their powers at all. BUT since I now know THIS book exists, (Thank you Discord for telling me) I have to read it to question whether or not I SHOULD have this book be canon with the rewrite logic, because that's what the show did.

Also, if you need a BOOK to explain an aspect of a show's finale...

Tells me you screwed up your finale.

This is also kind of experimenting people's reactions to me doing this. Because I WAS thinking about it for the show. There have been so many reaction channels on YouTube reacting to the show lately, and that's awesome, but the problem with me doing that is that I have already seen the show. Multiple times. So I thought "How about instead I did commentary?" That would definitely set me apart and gain a POV of the show from someone who actually grew up with it, AND can point out some little details you notice the more times you watch it.

I miss illustrations for books. Books with no pictures just make the story lost for certain people. But no art is ‘professional’ or whatever.

Kai’s… I can say for sure that’s not how Fire works. The core of the flame is hotter than the outer flame. Yellow is usually the COOLEST flame color, temperature wise. So the orange is the hotter part.

It looks cooler this way though.

I like it whenever the scar is visible. Scars tell stories with your characters. So they’re very interesting and I don’t understand why people don’t like drawing scars on characters.

Wu does not respect privacy.

They remained silent, meaning they didn't want to tell anyone what happened to them.

So instead Wu found a loophole and wrote a book about it.

So now the whole world knows!

Except those who don't read these books. Then yes, it's silent and you have no context.

[Their journeys were very different, but all of them were filled with danger, adventure, and excitement.]

As in, we didn't think these stories were worthy enough of animation.

So exciting that we didn't think this needed to be in the show.

I mean, Way of the Departed is called 'not canon' because it's 'too graphic'. And... can see that.

But for those who read the Sailor Moon books. You know they tear people's faces off ALL THE TIME. And the shows almost never do that.

Yeah the Sailor Moon books are actually kinda violent. Especially compared to the shows.

Okay. I’m gonna like these illustrations. I know I’m very sarcastic, that’s just who I am, but this art is actually great. I love how this looks.

more Minecraft au thoughts:

ayato definitely gathers lots of flowers and/or refuses to live anywhere but a flower forest biome. (<-biased headcanon. i do this)

his house is ornamented with diamond blocks (he likes the color) but when he actually has to mine anything himself (rare) he has to borrow tools because he forgets/doesn't want to carry them on him. this makes him very easy to trap in cobweb traps. i think at least once per week yae miko tricks him into falling into a simple cobblestone box or black concrete box and he has to beg Thoma to come let him out.

prefers the diamond sword that he carries with him to be unenchanted which is lucky for him because it makes it much easier to replace (he has a large chest full of emeralds in his house and he can just go to Zhongli's beautifully cultivated/restored village and trade with them to get a new one). he has to replace it often because other players steal it from him when they kill him kind of like a kill count. yae miko has two full large chests full of unused unenchanted diamond swords

he likes building and designing and landscaping and making his house look pretty and he gets very sad when it gets attacked by creepers so now it's surrounded by cats

wait no because i do the same thing 😭😭 I love the flower forests, or the flower plains. they're so pretty/

These headcanons are so fun and in character for him honestly, I adore them--

He probably bothers Thoma into gathering resources for him, since he prefers the building aspect a lot more over the exploring aspect. Thoma has links with like every group in the server, so he's able to get tons of stuff easily by trading for the hundreds of stacks of items that Ayato has suddenly decided he doesn't need (until the next day when he changes his mind and asks where it all is-- oops). Ayato really has no interest in the exploring or fighting aspect of the game, he just likes having valuables at his disposal and occasionally standing near spawn and starting arguments when he gets bored. If he wanders off on his own, expect to see a death message within about ten minutes. he tends to multitask while playing and often just walks into ravines or goes afk somewhere silly so he can go get a drink or snack and gets killed by mobs.

Thoma is totally the helpful friend on the server, gathering any resources anyone needs - if someone sends a message into the group chat asking for a couple of logs at 2am? he has two stacks of every type of log for them. He keeps the donation bin at spawn fully stocked, and is one of the few people that Capitano allows to approach his castle (since he helped plant the farms inside)

Ayato probably builds a super lovely and gorgeous house for Ayaka based on her favourite novel at the moment - it's super detailed and pretty, but she politely turns it down in favour of the giant chaotic block that she shares with a bunch of the other girls in the server - they all like to pool resources and have so many pets that the server lags a little when loading them all in. Every pet has a different collar and name tag, they're so extraordinarily loved, it's tradition that when one of the inhabitants comes home from a long journey, they feed each and every single pet. it spirals out of control pretty quickly. They also have an automated defense system across their very pretty front yard, that will trap and kill anyone or anything that dares to cross. You have to go a couple of thousand blocks out from spawn because their group has strip mined EVERYTHING.

Though the bonus to this is that Sucrose is in good with that clique, and so they have access to all the resources they need to build fancy contraptions for the whole server to use - exp farms, automatic fishers, elytra launchers, automatic furnaces and brewers, everything! They often team up with Albedo to find ways to streamline tedious processes - though if you travel out far enough, you'll find their testing ground, a huge flattened-out desert biome with failed machines all over it that they just never bothered to clean up.

My journey through Homestuck Act 2 (Part 1)

Splitting these into parts so these posts aren't toooo long. (This goes to page 002284, about where the towel falls on Dave's head).

-Did we... need a walkthrough of Sburb?

-Okay, actually this is pretty good exposition.

-As much as one generally doesn't know what they're getting into when they read this, I do really like how willing the comic is to establish very quickly how mind-bending it is. Looking back, I think I might've appreciated reading it when I was 14-16 (2015-2017). Alas, twas not to be. Before I stop writing this note, I would like to make note of what I did get into when I was in that age range. I got into surreality and weirdness in media. This was the time I watched Serial Experiments Lain. This was the time I got into art video games, like The Beginner's Guide. It was also when I discovered the wonderfully weird world of Adult Swim. However, a lot of that energy was also dedicated to surreality in filmmaking, which was heavily dominated by very poor understandings of morality, due to not only the mindset of the time, but also the mindset of the priveleged men who made these films, most of which were dominated by the ideas of Sigmund Freud. Let me ask you this. If instead of getting so invested in art cinema as a teenager, I spent that time reading Homestuck, would that have been a more positive force on my life? That remains to be seen.

-I love treating the ominous blue jester like they can definitely be trusted

-Wait. Is the implication that we, the readers are the blue jester? What are we?

-Why am being LECTURED by the narrator. Stop being MEAAAN

-It's honestly kind of sad how John just wanted to play a video game, and now the world is ending, that that him playing it is what is specifically ending the world.

-woah, time traveling messages, or something.

-Earlier I questioned the use of the walkthrough. However, I think it's important to understand this comic as a comic written as though it were a video game. You cannot understand what's going on if you read this like you would an issue of Marvel. You actively must shift your mind that with which you would approach a different medium in order to make sense of it. So, a walkthrough to help understand the mechanics of this story is unsurprising.

-wow, my apocalypse is pretty good, but my neighbor has an apocalypse+ subscription. I'm thinking of getting one for myself, but it's just so pricey you know?

-This is like if Jorge Luis Borges attempted to write the Bible

-I was a bar code once.

-Rose is just intelligent

-The use of multiple types of grist, and most importantly, Rose's response to it show an interesting parallel with the fault in one's approach to understanding something. On a proper game walkthrough, you would see a system such as grist typically get its own section as a means of understanding of the base mechanics of the game, especially if the game doesn't explain it for you. However, due to the extremely restrictive nature of the opening of Sberb, Rose cannot figure out the very base mechanics of the game, focusing instead on how to use those mechanics to succeed. In this way, Rose cannot understand Sberb because she does not have access to the experience and thought process of better understanding how it actually works. Think of it like school, and how oftentimes, they teach how to do well on tests, but fail to teach the very ideas, concepts, and ways of thinking that they are supposed to. Sberb is a game based on complicated systems, and yet those who do well are rewarded for making logical leaps, not actually understanding Sberb. (Note from later on that I thought of. The above methodology is essentially how John already behaves, reacting to whatever he has in his hands, or captchalog for that matter. Rose on the other hand, is better at understanding systems like Sburb overall, which shows the dire nature of the situation when Rose is thinking more like John)

-Oh, Rose is PISSED

-It is nice to see the characters act like kids again, even if for a moment.

-Wait, the blue jester isn't a communication device?

-or IS IT!?

-I.... have been spelling Sburb wrong, haven't I? Eh. I'll leave the misspelling up for authenticity.

-that car better come back

-oh-no... I've forgotten about GG. That's not good. I hope I don't have to go back through the old messages.

-I do not like TG

-The second person narrator changing is a bit weird. It sort of begs the question of why even have a second person narrator. I'll see how this goes though.

-tfw bags exist in Homestuck

-I was about to write a rant about Rose's captchalog being inconvenient to use because it autobalances, though using my brain has allowed me to realize that that like gives her more selection options in the long run, so its a moot point.

-this eldritch deity list is ever so slightly tedious.

-Also, I'm gonna make note of the summoning ritual, as this is another example of a system of thought that our main characters do not seem to understand. I'll likely note systems of thought in the future, since they seem to be the building blocks of the series.

-Okay, this is hilarious

-Wait, why was this game STILL IN BETA!?

-I can NOT believe they brought back the piss apple juice joke from the beginning that was initially just a reference to the movie Little Monsters

-OH GOD, he's doing to Game Bro what I'M DOING TO HOMESTUCK

-Oh my goodness, a game based comic inside a game based comic. What'll happen next?

-I... do not like this section

-Wow. Homestuck. Homestuck jokes about Homestuck. Homestuck.

-shut up. Shut up. SHUT UP!

-Another observation I think is important. If you understand the base rules of the comic, you don't really seem to need to recall everything that happened up until now exactly. Here's where we see the benefits of understanding the system the comic operates on. The question here though is this: To what extent can one keep this system in their head, and how useful will it be once so much happens in the future?

-I am not amused by the medium

-I love how obscure this piss joke is, and thus far, it is one of the primary recurring gags in the series.

-Wait, I thought the strife deck lets you have that item infinitely, but I guess I'm wrong? What's the point then? Is it just a talent box?

-Dave should have used the hash map that pushes inhabited boxes over in the event that two inhabit the same box... it's been a bit since I took data structures, though you could probably gather that from my take on stacks and queues from the last part.

-wow, dave being VULNERABLE

-Quick observation about time in Homestuck: Time is pretty loose in this series, at least in act 2. The very basis for a lot of the motivations comes from something that will happen in the future. Our interactions with Dave are in the past. What Homestuck is communicating to us as the readers is to not be quite so concerned with time dilating or shifting around, but rather to pay heed to time as a construct, for what is time but distance?

-Thus far, Rose is DEFINITELY my fav character. Who knows how long it'll stay that way once GG (whose real name I do know but shhh authenticity) and the trolls come in, but I'm liking her thus far.

-note to self: write long take on labrynthian setting design if it continues.

-it's stupid how the bronze not copper joke got a chuckle out of me.

-From what I can tell from the series thus far, and what I know of it going forward, every aspect of every character's life is going to become horrifyingly relevant to lore, so every detail feels like horrifying foreshadowing.

-another interesting aspect of the writing style is in how such aforementioned details are brought forth. Think about adventure games, and how there's always a bunch of stuff to click on/interact with that aren't story relevant, but contribute to the tone and atmosphere of the game. For Homestuck, the work needs to reproduce that in order to match the tone, but must do so without the reader's choice. So, we're left with information that both is and isn't relevant simultaneously.

-Rose's relationship to her mother is... interesting

-WORSHORSHOR SAUCE!? EEYUK! I HATE WORSHORSHOR SAUCE!

-So, it's interesting how the parents are portrayed in this series in that they are effectively dehumanized into strange entities whose reasoning and mind cannot be understood. For John's father, this made for goofy hijiinks, but for Rose's mother, it's different. Rose's mother is in some way, eldritch. I'm not exactly sure quite where I'm going with this in total, but I think it's important to remember that the system that the world of Homestuck operates on is more or less the system that the minds of the kids operate on. This means that the much different systems the parents operate on is objectively false, and therefore something about them is incomplete.

-The youth roll is an example of the above concept.

-I like how Dave and GG actively get along

-Dave hates dogs. Evil. Did everything wrong

My thoughts thus far are this. I think we've definitely hit the point post inciting incident where the story is slogging a little. Right now the story is taking off, but it needs to move somewhere while still introducing the rest of the characters, and that takes time. It's normal for stories to slow down at that point. There is still so much to be revealed of layer two. By the fractal theory of storytelling, we are only at about the end of act one of act two. That being said, I think act two is demonstrating the importance of systems and understanding of systems within Homestuck. This is revealing the mentality with which I am approaching this series. I'll also say that I'm enjoying meeting the characters and getting to know them. If anything, it could be worse. It could be a 1960s-1980s art film. Anyway, looking forward to the rest of Act 2.

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

He wants two things from his partner in crime, he wants to do flashy phantom thief crime stuff with them, and he wants to cuddle with them in a soft bed when the crime is over for the day. So ideally he'd have a secret base in like a cool forest or something where he can just chill and hang out and access to a town or city for crime, though likely it would be more of a driving distance then a walking distance, can't be too careful! Beyond that lots of sugary sweets and games and fun things to do and also several horses.

If his partner in crime refuses him or doesn't like the crime, then he switches to the domestic ideal completely. Wants them to look pretty and snuggle them and see them in soft comfortable clothing and maybe sometimes make him food and wash his hair and just all this gooey domestic bliss that he will DENY that he wants to his DEATH BED. Maybe even eventually some children when he's older, he thinks that might be fun, but definitely not yet though. Also they have to become a member of DICE, they don't have to go out on missions, but they have to be a member. Also more horses.

Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

Yes, absolutely, 100%, unless it's other members of DICE and even then it's still maybe a little jealous just not a lot. He tries to hog up as much of his partner's attention as possible along with using his own reputation to secretly drag down yours, he doesn't want you to have friends and loved ones outside of him and DICE because he doesn't think they deserve you, thinks there boring and lame. If you're good and give him lots of attention and is made the priority he can tolerate his partner having a few friends outside of him and DICE as long as he can monitor it, though he doesn't get why his partner puts up with outsiders.

If you ignore him or chose other people over him however, then the jealousy really spikes and prepare for escalating pranks and social sabotage. He's totally going to get anyone you start dating to break up with you one way or another and make all your friends believe some nasty rumors. If this goes on for too long he might start getting desperate and that's how you end up tied in the trunk of a stolen car though whether its a fake kidnapping so he can swoop in and save you to earn favor or a real kidnapping depends on his mood.

Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

Shockingly for the king of masks himself he's really not that different. Maybe a bit more serious, a bit more regal, bit more clingy, bit more entitled, but all and all it's still that same Kokichi as before.

Naughty: How would they punish their darling?

He much prefers to reward good behavior then punish bad behavior as he knows its a much more effective method of conditioning but when he does need to punish he does not hesitate. While he prefers the easy way he loves the game of the hard way, the back and forth, will against will, it's entertaining as all hell to him to see his partner's ingenuity and deception in full swing.

For the actual punishments he enjoys psychological punishments, commenting on your bad behavior with a snide mocking voice as he picks apart every mistake you made. Very much like he's talking down to a child as he explains that you can't lockpick with a single bobby pin you need two or showing how much of your great scheme was all actually planted by him in the first place. Then leave you alone with your thoughts in a silent but comfortable room with no distractions. Though within a few hours to at most a day he'll happily flounce right back in with that same old excited grin as he drags you out to binge a new anime like nothing happened.

He really doesn't want to chain you down or lock you in a single room for very long though, that's boring! He will if he has to though, don't make him feel like he has no choice but to have to restrain you to properly teach you.

His favorite punishment though involves a game of chess. No fancy rules, no fairy chess like he makes you play for kicks when he's bored, just plain chess. Throughout the match he'd psychoanalyze his partner's playstyle as he wins over and over again. Explaining how they are like their playstyle and that's why they never win, and until they can beat him at chess, they have no shot at getting away. Kokichi is a grandmaster though, so don't expect that to be easy.

He doesn't mock you for losing, or make jokes as he observes how your playstyle reflects you, he just wins over and over calmly as he explains your every flaw in how you plan and maneuver around the board, might even praise you occasionally for your improvement and for clever thinking even as he checkmates you again. All to try and show you that you can't win against him but you can be on the winning side with him if you just listen to him, that he can lead you properly.

He's not trying to hurt you, he's trying to teach you where your shortcomings are by showing you the gap in strategic almost militaristic at times leadership between the two of you along with just generally improving your rational thinking. Plus it has the bonus effect of distracting you because humans are inherently competitive and time spent studying chess maneuvers to try and prove a moral point against him is time not spent trying to escape.

Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?

Ideally none, he wants to have a partner not a toy. If you're good the worst you'd probably get is a tracker and he reads your texts messages under the guise of it being his job as a leader to keep an eye on his subordinates, maybe the occasional day where you're not allowed to leave the house and have to snuggle him all day.

Though if you're bad you'll find yourself in a locked house with a strict schedule with him controlling the food you eat and the clothes you wear with no outside contact beyond DICE who definitely will not help you beyond making you some food or bringing you a new board game.

Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?

Unique: Would they do anything different from the classic yandere?

Kokichi even as a yandere does not kill and avoid serious physical harm if at all possible, not only does he find that too easy and distasteful, it's against the rules of DICE and as such he will stick to it. Minor harms on the table though if someone who has a crush on you steps on a thumbtack covered in lemon juice that's fair game.

Wit’s end: Would they ever hurt their darling?

He prides himself on his control so it would take a LOT to drive him to do more then like tackle you into hugs which definitely bruises your knees as you crumple from an Ouma Missile. However if you pushed him for enough with escape attempts or attacking him and he feels like it's the only option he will hurt his partner in crime. It will be very precisely done though, less lashing out at his partner and more calculated incapacitation. He would REALLY prefer his partner in crime in one piece though so even then it would take a lot of pushing after that to do anything truly permanent beyond small scars after it's healed. It would take a will of pure stubborn iron to not have caved to some degree to him and DICE though.

What We Do in the Shadows: Go Flip Yourself (4x08)

I mean... absolutely hilarious in every way.

Cons:

This episode was relatively light on Guillermo, and I kind of missed having the Guide around, but honestly I don't have much I can really complain about! Oh, I guess even though Young Colin Robinson isn't my favorite part of the show, it was a little odd that he wasn't around for this, considering that it seems like the kind of boring show he'd be into as much as Lazlo. No acknowledgment that he also lives in the house was kind of odd!

Pros:

I just... I don't even really know how to articulate the cleverness of how this episode was framed and scripted and edited. It immediately sent me back in time to being a kid and watching shows on TLC, remember TLC? My favorite was Clean Sweep. Obviously now all this kind of thing is on HGTV which I don't really watch much of, but I still recognize the trappings of the genre. The editing, the logos, the way they'd show a misleading preview clip from the next scene after the commercial break, the intro song with the attempt at being bad-ass, played over clips of comically small renovations and stock footage of demolitions, the style of the interview, the moment of decision where we cut back to earlier moments of the characters considering their changes, the big "reveal" and how obviously disappointed they all were, the post-credits scene they all film for the purpose of getting like $1,200... I could go on and on. It all felt like a spot-on parody of something I wouldn't have even said I knew much about to begin with.

And then we get our plot twist, that Bran is actually Simon the Devious, who has created the entirety of this TV show, gotten Lazlo hooked on it, all to gain access to their home in Staten Island and steal back the cursed hat. I'll admit that the final scene where all this is revealed was a little less funny to me than all the parody stuff that came before, but I also think it's what will make the episode stick in my head later, and cement itself as a hilarious half hour. The sheer lunacy of the plan really shines through when you remember that the hat these two have been fighting over is in fact cursed and makes everything immeasurably worse for whoever has it. Simon immediately flies into a wall in bat-form once he has it. I feel like Simon's whole plan really speaks to the nature of vampirism in this world, the way you have infinite time to make some truly weird decisions and just run with them for as long as you need to. The gag where he lists all of his crew, the various vampires we've met in the past, really worked for me, as did Simon's continued disdain for Staten Island.

As far as our core cast, I love how even when the episode is focusing on this larger meta gag, we still get to see our favorites playing out their familiar roles. Guillermo is attempting to be devious and get something that he wants out of the bargain, once it's clear the vampires won't be saying no to the renovation, but in typical sad sack fashion he doesn't actually get the renovated room of his dreams. Nadja gets over-excited and acts impulsively, actually killing the co-star of the show before things get started, and has to use her hypnotist powers to clear things up for the crew and the viewers at home.

Marwa gets a prize for being the smartest: since she now likes whatever Nandor likes, she is really excited about Nandor's new wish for a "man cave," which Nandor definitely thinks is a place where he gets to hang out and get fucked by his guy friends, which is hilarious and perfect... anyway, she gets the "man cave" all set up and then locks herself alone in there, because since Nandor wants time alone in this room, so does Marwa. Honestly, that wish is the gift that keeps on giving. What you've basically got now is a setup where Marwa and Nandor have the exact same desires, but Marwa is just... much smarter than Nandor, and therefore is going to get her way more and more as time goes by. Genius! I love it!

As is always the case when I'm trying to write about this show, I really could go on and on in praise of its comedy, but describing jokes is never as funny as experiencing them yourself. So I'll just leave by saying my favorite gags were: Vampire Elvis, always a classic, and Lazlo's delivery of the words "New York Citayyyyy."

Can't wait to meet Guillermo's special friend next week!
