What if Aang and Gyatso ran away together, allowing them to avoid the genocide but still confront Azulon twenty years later after Aang has mastered every element and win the war? 80 years later what would the world look like, and (in this unlikely AU scenario where all the rest of the main cast is still born) how would Sokka, Katara, Toph, Zuko, Azula, etc be different?

I mean it wouldn’t take aang 20 years to master every element he’s literally a prodigy. he mastered all four elements by the time he was 13. but yeah. if gyatso had found him in time. oh man. the inherent tragedy of poor timing, magnified by one hundred years. it’s unclear exactly how long after aang getting frozen sozin’s comet arrived (it was within the same year, but certainly not on the same day, as natla suggests), but it was probably sometime between a few weeks and a few months later. so I don’t think aang would’ve been able to prevent the initial attacks on the four temples, but obviously there would’ve been survivors who weren’t at the temples at the time, since yknow. they’re nomadic (natla also has them conveniently gather for “the great comet festival” as a way to explain why they were all killed at once but like. they weren’t. that’s not how genocide works). and so if aang and gyatso were together, away from the southern air temple, during the attack, that would definitely spur aang to fulfill his responsibilities as the avatar. he’d still feel the same crushing guilt, the ignorance of not heeding the threats of war, the responsibility on his shoulders of repairing his culture and ending an imperialist regime before it’s too late. but obviously, to a far less extreme extent, and with gyatso there to guide him, instead of temporally displaced and utterly dispossessed and bereft of his mentor, with no air nomads (besides appa) left. there would still be air nomads immediately after sozin’s comet, who were eventually captured and executed (or forced to hide and assimilate, hey ty lee’s family) over a century of imperialist conquest and violence. but if aang never time traveled, he would have still defeated sozin at the age of 13 and ended the war under a massive time pressure. roku would still be on his ass trying to get him to correct his mistakes, and aang would still feel the crushing burden of being just one kid tasked with saving the world from disaster.

so based on aang’s lifespan as indicated in lok, the next avatar would be an adult from the southern water tribe by the time the rest of the gaang are kids. and maybe the avatar is kya (im not gonna do the exact math here, because who cares). and kya is tasked with maintaining balance in a world where there are fewer air nomads than there should be, but due to aang’s influence, there are far more than there otherwise would be, as he spent the rest of his life ensuring that the world was a safe place to live in and keeping the rulers of the fire nation in check. and the world has never really forgiven the fire nation for what they did to the air nomads, but the extent of their imperialism was never fully realized because aang stopped sozin before he could oppress and attack more populations. so kya is constantly working with various nations and peoples to maintain balance, but she’s basically just a diplomat because aang did most of the work of putting out fires and now she’s just facilitating and ensuring that the peace he established continues. so she has time to like. start a family. and sokka has a complex about being the nonbending son of the literal avatar (and hakoda’s like “try being the nonbending partner of the literal avatar” but it doesn’t really make him feel better because that’s so obviously not the same) because obviously he can develop a complex about anything (still a much better complex to have than his actual deal, tho, so we’re counting this one as a win) and katara has a complex about having to be the best waterbender ever because her mother is the avatar. and their home life is kind of unstable because their mother doesn’t have a lot of time for them, but she’s still a very loving parent and eventually she takes them on trips with her and they love being able to see the world and help their mother with her diplomatic duties (katara is very justice-oriented, sokka relishes in getting to help kya with the more administrative and bureaucratic side of politics). so it’s better.

katara and sokka meet toph on one of their diplomacy fieldtrips, since the beifong family is incredibly powerful in the earth kingdom, and as much as they try to hide toph’s existence from the world, it’s kind of hard to ignore a whole twelve year old girl in a fancy hanfu just running around your mansion. sokka and toph immediately get along, and she takes him to the earth rumble where he becomes obsessed with the entire spectacle of it. katara finds toph kind of obnoxious, and is glad for them to finally leave gaoling. then of course toph stows away with them, and sokka has to somehow keep that a secret from both katara and kya until the beifongs come aknocking like “did you by any chance KIDNAP OUR DAUGHTER?!?” and toph’s like “NO. I KIDNAPPED MYSELF.” and katara is just so fucking fed up with the whole thing someone please return this tiny aristocrat back to her mansion dear GOD. but ultimately toph is just so cute that she gets her way and kya agrees to show her the world before then returning her to her family (at which point toph assures sokka that she will simply run away again). toph is just so happy to have relative freedom that she doesn’t even mind that katara is [checks notes] bullying her for being blind. and so she kind of just tags along on their travels throughout the earth kingdom. but then, once they go back home, she realizes that there is simply no way that is agreeing to live in the south pole, so she and sokka reach a compromise and she moves in with suki on kyoshi island, who sokka goes to visit all the time.

oh yeah. he obviously knows suki. their introduction is far more formal, what with them actively knowing the avatar will be visiting them in advance, and he doesn’t antagonize her (he also doesn’t need to learn any grand lesson about patriarchy since gender roles were not being reified by colonialism in this world. fwiw) but he still asks her to teach him what she knows (even though he did receive formal training from hakoda as a child, not for any life-threatening purposes, just because it’s a part of their culture) because he’s obsessed with learning every single thing he can about the world. suki finds it really cute that this nepobaby is so humble, and they have a fun time getting to know each other without the threat of war looming over their heads. yue similarly gets to know sokka on a diplomatic trip to the northern water tribe and there’s immediate chemistry and they’re infatuated. but obviously she’s also engaged, which is an issue. since there’s no siege, both hahn and yue survive and eventually get married, which is as tragic for yue as it sounds. eventually yue gets so sick of hahn that the next time she sees sokka she’s just like fuck it and just straight up enters her infidelity era (which is fully morally justified btw). sokka knows that if anyone ever found out that the princess of the northern water tribe was having an affair with the avatar’s son, it would cause an international scandal, so he’s incredibly careful not to do anything that might expose them. and it’s very bittersweet, but it is what it is.

haru and jet’s respective villages were never occupied so they both grow up in pretty normal households. haru is still kind and brave, and jet is still obnoxious (sorry), and katara is still infatuated with both of them, but jet never like. tries to kill sokka or flood a village, and she never helps haru liberate a prison camp, so they kind of just have normal teenage relationships that last for a brief while and then end naturally. of course sokka still cannot stand jet, but it’s purely vibes based so he just chooses to ignore him while katara sews him the ugliest hat you have ever seen in your life. and eventually haru and katara will reconnect when they’re slightly older and get into a more serious relationship. because they’re cute together. also they meet aunt wu and the events of “the fortuneteller” just play out exactly as they do in the episode. idk why but that’s important to me.

as for azula and zuko, they both grew up hearing from their father that “the fire nation was robbed of its glory and humiliated by the avatar, and that one day it is their destiny to take back their honor and finally realize sozin’s vision, restoring their glorious bloodline to the true throne once and for all.” and ursa’s always like “oh well you know your father has fanciful notions because he was descended from the firelords, but that’s a totally outmoded system of government, and ever since avatar aang instated a republic, the quality of life for all of our citizens has improved tenfold. that’s just evidence-based data talking.” so zuko believes ursa, because she’s nicer to him, and azula believes ozai, because he has his claws in her. kya knows that ozai and the rest of the old royal bloodline still pose a threat to the stability of the fire nation and the world at large, so she is always attending to that family just to ensure that they’re not doing anything insane. and sometimes she takes her kids along with her. and well. for one thing, a better-adjusted sokka hanging out with azula (still being abused, albeit to a lesser extent) is kind of just amazing to me. she explains why the fire nation is ontologically superior and that’s why they’re being nerfed by his stupid lib mom and he’s just like “you’re so smart so how are you so stupid.” he’s deeply enthralled by her cognitive dissonance and just her whole deal in general.

meanwhile katara is infatuated with zuko, and ursa, who immediately adores katara because she’s such a cute and friendly girl, is kind of quietly encouraging him to date her, because the waterbending prodigy daughter of the avatar is really an ideal match for her son. and zuko really likes katara too. they get along really well, and they agree on a lot, are both really passionate about similar things, and go on fun little adventures together, and help each other with their bending, and make each other laugh. but every time katara tries to kiss him he interrupts her by being like “does your brother think im cool?” and katara’s just like “what.” until eventually even she realizes that the idea of actually dating this boy is simply impossible. and for a while she’s crushed that the guy she likes is obsessed with her stupid loser brother (can you imagine anything worse. truly. i cannot) but eventually she comes around because she’s always wanted a gay best friend who she can carry around in her pocket. and then she makes him go shopping with her and paint her nails and go to plays and at first he’s like “this feels kind of offensive” but eventually he realizes that even though she IS stereotyping him he actually DOES really like all those things so he’s just like FINE. I GUESS. katara meanwhile is trying to oh so subtly figure out whether or not sokka even knows that zuko exists and sokka is just like “oh yeah he seems nice enough. his sister though. well she fascinates me.” and katara is like “what the fuck nooooo” but then sokka keeps talking and she realizes he’s discussing her like an abnormal psych case study or something he would dissect in a lab and she’s like “oh. okay. thank god he’s not into her. he’s just some kind of freak.”

katara crowns herself queen of the gays and vows to zuko: “i am going to get my brother to fall in love with you if it’s the last thing i do.” but all of katara’s attempts to make zuko attractive to sokka backfire because she’s exclusively making him do things that she finds attractive and sokka simply has the exact opposite taste. he goes to katara like “i don’t know why i never noticed it before, but zuko’s vibes are kind of rancid. he even kind of reminds me of that guy jet who sucked so bad.” and katara’s like FUCCKCKKKKCK. eventually katara is out of options so zuko’s just like “fine i guess i can’t sink any lower..” so he just knocks on sokka’s door and when sokka opens it he just gets on his knees and clasps his hands together and goes “pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease just one chance PLEASE” and sokka is just like “ummmmmmmmm???? lmfao???? okay….” and goes on a very awkward date with zuko where all he does is just answer every single one of zuko’s somewhat invasive questions about his life in the most detached, impersonal way possible and then at 9pm on the dot sokka yawns and is like “wow im so beat…. this is my bedtime so. goodnight” and zuko is just like scribbling down in his little diary “sokka goes to bed at 9pm on the dot every night because he is regimented and responsible…” sokka gets home and katara’s like, eyes all sparkly “how did it goooo???” and sokka’s just like “man. i don’t know how i didn’t see it sooner. i thought azula was a freak, but zuko is just as much of a freak, if not more so! i definitely need to go out with him again. he’s such a fascinating test subject.” and katara is just like “fuck my life why is he like this.” and then goes to zuko and is like “yeah!!! sokka said he had sooooo much fun!! he really wants to see you again!!” and zuko just lights up like “REALLY??!!?” and katara just doesn’t have the heart to tell him the reason.

anyway. katara and sokka travel the globe. katara establishes some water tribe healing centers in other parts of the world, works as a liaison between the air nomads and the southern water tribe, gets back together with haru, goes on countless adventures, and builds a beautiful life for herself. sokka starts attending ba sing se university because he’s sick of people assuming that his diplomacy skills are purely due to nepotism. so he decides to major in polysci so that he can point to his degree as a qualification. but pretty quickly he realizes that polysci is a stupid field of study and everyone in his classes (including the professors) are completely incompetent and have no actual field experience. so he starts taking different classes, shopping around to figure out what it is he really wants to study. turns out that a lot of different subjects interest him, and maybe being a diplomat isn’t his only possible career. he spends a good decade in academia, just contributing research to all kinds of different fields. then he gets sick of academia and goes into engineering. he starts working with an inventor in the earth kingdom (the mechanist) and basically revolutionizes technology. then he’s like “im sick of inventing cars and computers and smartphones and falafel” (his most important invention) so he goes back to his physics research. but then he gets kind of sick of how insufferably arrogant physicists are so he’s like “maybe it’s time to revisit my favorite case studies” and goes back to the fire nation. katara tags along purely for damage control.

sokka, katara, zuko, and azula are all having dinner together. azula was eventually able to extricate herself from ozai’s abuse and moved to a more rural part of the country to heal. she got really into spiritualism and started working with air nomads taking care of sky bison. zuko moved to a different city in the southern fire nation where he became a herpetologist who primarily works with dragons, and also got really involved in theater. by the time sokka and katara revisit them they are both really happy and thriving. sokka has even read some of zuko’s plays, and has to admit that they’re quite good. which is disappointing, because he was hoping to use them as case studies in his research. at some point during their dinner, zuko’s like “i can’t believe we used to date. i must’ve been so annoying back then, i don’t know how you even put up with me.” and azula’s like “hang on. no. you weren’t dating sokka. i was dating sokka.” and they both stare at each other and then turn to look at sokka for like five minutes of total silence. katara gets so fed up with this that she just bursts out, “NEITHER OF YOU WERE DATING SOKKA. HE WAS USING YOU AS DATA FOR HIS ABNORMAL PSYCH PET PROJECT.” another five minutes of silence. and then azula is just like “oh that actually makes perfect sense. in hindsight that really explains a lot.” and zuko’s like “but kataraaaaa why wouldn’t you TELL meeeee” and katara’s like “well i didn’t want to hurt your feelings and destroy your ego forever. but now that you like. ride dragons for a living i figure that you’ll be fine.” and zuko’s like “yep. haha. im fine! totally fine.” he wasn’t at all living under the illusion that sokka was returning to him after all these years because they were going to reunite and get married and ride his favorite dragon into the sunset forever. his ego definitely isn’t destroyed by this fact at all. he’s sooo good don’t even worry about it. sokka’s just like “well anyway, im very glad that you both seem to be doing a lot better now. that’s really great news. big mazel to you both. okay bye.”

anyway. as for kya, she lives a long and happy life, and is so proud of both her children. she dies at a very old age, completely content. the next avatar is of earth kingdom heritage, of course. and it’s mako :)

I hate myself for thinking this but, what if MC finds out she’s pregnant and the first thing in her mind is that she’s fucking up Cove’s future. So instead of telling him she just breaks up with him and shuts herself away from him so he can’t convince her that they’ll work it out. Now Cove has no clue why the love of his life just broke his poor heart. Skip to five years later, Cove comes back to surprise visit his dad but surprise there’s MC, Cliff and a little five year old boy that looks way too much like Cove. Like I’m talking copy and paste that’s a little Cove

oh my fucking god.... i. pls i have some thoughts but also OUCH. BIG OUCH

mmm i'm not gonna make a full fic/detailed post... maybe later if we're all itching for some angst or i'm up for causing more heart ache n then i am very much open to expanding on this (already thinking abt cove getting to know his son.... omfg my heart HURTS)

but i wonder how MC "gets away" (for lack 'a better words) with not telling cove about the kid.

because i can tell you right now, cliff and kyra can't know about it and keep it a secret. not for 5 years at least.

so does she beg everyone in her family to keep it a secret? i think that's the best bet. moms would really prefer Not to keep it a secret, but they also can't force you to tell cove...

but i also don't see them letting 5 years without cove at least knowing, go by either... they'd try to keep the secret, but seeing cove's sad face would break them quickly, if not instantly.

also your friends!!! god, they can not keep a secrete to save their life, especially that big. so you can tell them, but expect the news to find its way back to cove in about.. mmm... 4 hours? so yeah....

anyway!!! lets say that your family kept the secret...

i think your son would eventually start asking about his dad. he sees how you and your family react to him, hears all the mumbling about how he looks so much like... "cove"? when you think he's in the other room.

and he sees how sometimes you look sad and how you slowly and tenderly run your fingers through his hair. and how sometimes you tell him "yknow, daddy has hair just like yours."

and when he asks why you're sad, if you respond with something along the lines of "you look just like your dad, thats all."

or even if you say that in response when he asks what his dad looks like (if you haven't shown him pictures), or if he overhears you saying he looks like this "cove" guy

you notice he starts looking at himself more often... maybe even asking, "does daddy have green hair like mine?" "are his eyes really blue, just like mine?" "does he wear glasses too?" and still in awe that he and this man he's never met, but already seems to adore him (as much as a toddler can adore someone they don't know), share the same features.

and if you show him pictures of cove, which i hope you do, but if you don't, don't worry because your son will probably realize "he has green hair like me!!!!" and he'd either run up to enthuse about it or run up to ask him if he's his daddy bc they have the same hair color... or just call him daddy n if anyone tries to argue about it, wdym?! they have the same hair color, what more do you need?!

so hopefully, cove is the only man with specifically seafoam green hair. otherwise, you're shitting yourself every time your son runs off to meet his green-haired-brethern

anyway. I think all your sons questions, and seeing pictures, knowing that he shares so many traits with cove, and seeing you miss him.

oh god, seeing you sad would make him insist so so much on seeing cove.

"if we meet daddy, will you be happy again?"

also can't believe I almost forgot.. your son being sad about not having a dad, and being jealous of other kids for spending time with their dad, etc.

he'd ask you questions about why he doesn't have a dad, n if he does. why isn't he around? and a real heartbreaker.. does daddy hate him? does he not love him? is that why he isn't here?

so I guess that means it's time to go back to sunset bird! and finally explain why you moved away n never looked back, and why you don't talk to anyone but your parents from back then...

now I won't get into everything right now (im a fuckin liar. I can feel a tangent coming on)

but I wanna talk abt how cove would feel, just a bit, and how I think your future with him would look...

I think at first, he'd be really shocked, seeing this carbon copy of his much younger self. the only thing telling him that his 4-5 year old self didn't jump out of one of his many childhood pictures,

is any birthmarks or beauty marks that maybe you have, or the boys hair being curlier than his, or his skin tone, or maybe he has your nose. whatever it is, he knows he's looking at the imperfect combination of you and him.

(cove's heart is beating outta his chest right now, n you're lucky he only stumbles instead of fainting, because this really is a shock... but that deeper part inside of him, that egotistical, primal almost, part of his heart swells up at the thought, the reality. that his son looks mostly, if not entirely like him.)

but after shock, he's sad. I think he'd be really sad, because he realizes that this is why you broke up right? and no matter how in control of your emotions you think you may be, your wide eyes show how afraid, nervous, and sad you are. he knows. he knows without even talking to you and it hurts

and after he gets past the anger and confusion stage, maybe even in between in fact- which would be more natural since, I think he'd feel this all at once but that's besides the point

he'd be really sad he missed all his sons milestones. walking, first words... God he probably dreams about it (when he does eventually fall asleep), and now his heart is tugging at the seams and the seams are RIPPING.

he also starts thinking about how hard it must've been doing it by yourself. and going through all that without him, your partner.

but maybe you didn't rely on him like he relied on you? maybe you didn't trust him like he did you, maybe you just... didn't need him. like he needed you.

you did break up afterall, and you never let him know about the kid until now, so maybe you thought he'd be a failure of a father and nipped it in the bud before disaster struck...

but I also think that's where anger comes in. because you didn't tell him. he didn't have a choice at all.

he knows he had a tendency to hesitate or run away, but he thinks really hard about it, and he knows he wouldn't have ran away from this.

leaving you alone would scare him a lot more than being a father. being a bad or absent father would scare him a lot more than trying to be a good one. knowingly abandoning a life he helped create, would scare him so much more. he wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise.

so while he gets it. he doesn't get why you didn't try.

and if you explain that you worried about ruining his future, he's so upset and so mad because how could you make that choice for him? how could you take on the burden alone?

this is also where confusion merges in, because while the answers are so obvious or easy to guess, he just can't believe it. he doesn't wanna believe it...

now about your future...

cove still loves you. he's loved you his whole life, it's hard to stop even 5 years later... and seeing you, it makes his heart throb because he's dreamed about this for many nights.

you broke up with him without giving any answers. you even up and moved by the end of the week so when he tried to give you space, before talking to you, it was too late. your room was pretty much void of every sign of life.

you took all your treasured items, your clothes- spare some youd been meaning to get rid of, your pictures, your hobby items. everything. he's surprised you didn't just take the bed and frame.

he's surprised you didn't just carve out his heart n take it with you, because if it's still in his chest, why does it feel so hollow?...

it'd take a really long time to even think of a romantic relationship. if at all. maybe cove's even accepted the break up at some point, depending on how long you'd been together. but if you'd been together since you were 13, it's a hard pill to swallow. bc you can put up with his angsty teenage self, what changed...?

I think seeing you be a parent, and so adored by your son, warms up his heart. makes him fall in love a bit at the sight.

it's not instant, he's getting to know you again. and getting to know this life that he didn't even know was waiting for him.

it's a good 2 or 3 years of figuring out this mess until it becomes something that makes sense. or as much sense as it can make. and if there's still something there, no matter how miniscule. it will catch fire.

now about the kiddo... he's so scared. and I hope you took a few days of talking with cove, and prbly cliff n Kyra bc they have a lotta feelings n thoughts on this too, before you try to integrate cove into his life.

it's small. cove meeting you at the park, and either your son is asking cove a billion questions (both abt why the sky is blue, and awkward questions abt why he wasn't present before...)

or he's trying to drag him on the monkey bars (doesn't work, cove's feet are on the ground still....)

or he's sitting silently on the blanket, reading, occasionally showing cove his favorite scene of the picture book or making him pronounce a word

but it does get bigger, it becomes lunch-n-movie dates, spending the night at your house (at your son's insistence. prbly bc he didn't want him to leave after a fun day), then cove taking him out alone..

it's a lot. and sometimes it feels like you're going backwards or that you're not moving at all because it's hard, for awhile. and even though his dad is on speed dial, there's not enough information he can give cove in how to take care of and deal with a kid he just met a few months ago.

especially a kid who already has a bit of personality, is hell on wheels (like most 5 year olds), possibly has many questions n sometimes problems with cove suddenly being here... it's a lot. n cliff can't help with any of it really.

he does get comfortable, eventually. although there's still times when he's sad, sometimes even angry about what happened, and all he's missed out on, he's so so happy to not miss out on anything else.

hi lol this is like my first request ever and i’m nervous but i was hoping you could write abt the reader being like the son/adopted son/protege of catwoman (or harlivy) and he’s stealing something from a museum by himself but nightwing just so happens to be visiting gotham for family dinner or wtv, so they’re both in the museum but a security guard gets close so they end up in a very small supply closet or wtv yknow? like a forced proximity type, i also won’t mind if it does get spicy towards the end <3 tysm

You and Dick Grayson were in a supply closet, nothings wrong with that right? nothings wrong with being hiding in a supply closet with a superhero right? nothings wrong with being in a close proximity with the said hero right? so close that you were able to breath into his neck, so close that his back is against you chest.

Nothings wrong with this is what you keep telling yourself.

Just a while ago you were stealing a precious jewel from a museum owned by some criminal you bothered not remembering the name, you were on your way out after grabbing the jewel when Nightwing came trying to catch you, and now you're both hiding in a supply closet with guards patrolling outside.

"Hey you really like the position we're in huh buddy?" Dick muttered while giggling, You had no idea that your boner was pressed against Dick's ass.

"I-uhh... I can't help it y'know, I mean with a ass like that who wouldn't pitch a tent." You made a flirty retort to which earned a chuckle from the other man.

"Well what can I say? I've got the finest ass in Gotham." Dick leaned his head on your chest and looked up, you both kept eye contact with each other (or mask to mask stare?)

"Not just Gotham, I'd say the whole world." You chuckled as you both kept looking each other, his hot breath on your face while you breath down on him too.

a short silence came as both of you stare at each other's face, You were feeling hot and Dick's breath on your face doesn't help your painfully hard boner.

"Why don't we make our time here worthwhile? from what I can tell the guards are still searching the area." Your voice was breathy, Dick could tell you were at your limit, so he decided to tease you, he pressed his fat ass further onto your crotch earning a grunt from your mouth.

"Well let's make our time worthwhile then Mr. Thief." Dick stood on his tiptoes to place a peck on your lips.

You unzipped your pants and the hard meat slapped Dick's spandex suit making quite a noise.

"You should keep the noise to minimum Mr. Thief, You wouldn't want our little session to end early do you?" Dick smirked as he felt the hot big rod pressed against his clothed behind.

"Oh baby I'll keep quiet until I fuck you dry, now lick this." You shoved two of your fingers in Dick's mouth, he happily sucked and licked your fingers.

Dick unbuckled his pants so you would not have to tear his suit for access, as soon as Dick's pants were lowered you hurriedly shoved one of your finger in his hole.

"Damn baby your quite eager." You chuckled as you felt Dick's hole clenching.

"Haven't had action for a long time." Dick answered with a small laugh of his own. He groaned every time he felt the finger massage his inner walls.

Owen is trying to lead everyone and failing every chance he gets. they find a skull with Apo's horns and mourn. a year later Owen returns to the maze after someone told him there is a chance Apo might be alive. He finds Apo! And then gets all his memories back. Including ones about killing Rasbii's sister! He then KILLS APO. BECAUSE APPARENTLY HE THINKS ALL DEMONS ARE EVIL. AND THEN GOES BACK TO THE CLEARING AND KILLS RASBII. But she does get to stab him with a poisoned wooden spike. Owen then gets found for his crimes after killing more demons and is forced to have lava rise from the ground up as hes locked in the same prison Apo was. In his final moments he heard and felt memories of his time spent with his best friends before taking his final breath. None of them escaped the maze. Truly the most tragic of trios. Also outsiders smp is really cool.

thinking about how the three of the biggest relationships in bucks life are pretty significantly tied to helicopters/helicopter crashes,,, (partially inspired by this post by @maygrcnt)

taylor kelly: met her when her news helicopter crash. not the first person he seriously dated but definitely is the most serious romantic relationship he had yknow. can’t forget the whole couch metaphor arc.

eddie: i mean it’s pretty self explanatory but eddie’s helicopter crash when he was in the army caused him to be discharged and forced to be reliant on his family again, which is what made him move to la, where, of course, he met buck. they’re literally thee most important person in each others lives. they’re besties. coparents (when the only help eddie’s had as a coparent is shannon, who left (no hate to her it’s complicated shit and she did die but still she did), and his parents, who were controlling and not what either of them needed and also just generally really shitty to eddie at the time (ESPECIALLY re his parenting). and then buck comes along and like within a year he’s like i trust you with my life and my son and my sons life! after everything!! and puts buck as chris’ legal guardian in his will—) n e ways yeah that but also eddie’s ptsd related to the whole helicopter crash incident was super significant later in their relationship too bc eddie was at his lowest point (a place he’d been before but back then, his wife left him and his parents actively made everything worse instead of helping) and buck just like. steps in WITH eddie and gives him what he needs and like takes care of eddie and chris in they way they both need instead of forcing them into what he thinks they need like eddie’s parents did. yeah. and eddie actually did some healing then unlike the last time. so eddie is easily the most important and serious and intimate (like platonically but also Not) relationship buck has ever had, more so than any of bucks gfs.

and then tommy comes around!!! a fuckin helicopter pilot. he and buck first meet not necessarily in a helicopter crash but in a helicopter. in an emergency situation. and they draw SO MANY parallels between tommy and eddie and taylor (he and eddie have a lot in common like with the whole army and martial arts stuff and they get really close really fast and then BUCK HIMSELF drawing the taylor parallels. literally biting at my enclosure.) and wow! look at that! they kiss (and soon start a relationship) and tommy is literally not only the first man buck has ever kissed, but also the catalyst for buck realizing he’s bi. (or, at least, that those feelings bucks had for men in the past (cough cough eddie) are like mushy romantic/sexual/Very Not Platonic things.) literally even if they just kissed that once and had no relationship past that it’s still a massively impactful (non)relationship for buck!!!

and somehow. somehow the most important relationships in bucks life are all connected to helicopter crashes/emergencies. and they’re only characters who have such big connections to said helicopter crashes/emergencies. and they all have relationships that are incredibly important and impactful to buck. this is literally canon.

Blows my little lore kazoo <33 Here’s my star hc family tree and silly star forms of everyone! Plus the original chart from 2019 when I first had this stupid idea for them all to be related which has since just. Dominated my personal star lore. It was supposed to be a fun au idea and then it got out of control the drama was just too much fun <33 More details under the cut about everyone!

- So first I gotta talk about dark stars real quick, in my lore they are a species of star and not just one guy

- Darkstars can not have parents, they are created from the shadow of millennium stars

- essentially what happens is when a millennium star is born, a Darkstar is created in its shadow to help maintain balance between light and dark forces of the universe. They are as pure light magic and as pure dark magic as any stars can possibly get.

- The Darkstar who begins the whole family tree IS the dark star from Bowsers inside story, his real name is Aludra. The Millennium star who he was created with is Prankstar, his real name is Capella

-THEY ARE NOT RELATED. I just wanna say that hear the deal with dark and millennium stars is less like a ‘these beings are twins’ thing and more like a ‘you are cosmically tied to this being by the strings of fate’ deal

-Without getting into Aludra and Capella’s complicated lore and more into the messed up lore of the history of dark and millennium stars, TLDR: Aludra was the star’s leader and Capella was his jester. They were in a secret relationship while Aludra was married to another star (the marriage had been arranged by the council)

- Aludra and his wife have 3 biological kids: Boomer (yes, the boss from mario rpg), Eldstar, and Smithy

- side note: star children are not made through. Yknow. They are made through a magic wishing ritual it is very easy and you don’t even have to see the other parent for it to happen. Also Eldstar and Smithy, those are not their birth names, they are titles earned later on, lots of higher stars have them

-Aludra also raises the next darkstar born, her name is Umbriel and Capella raises her corresponding millennium star, his name is Vesper. They are largely unimportant rn but just. That’s who they are

-Aludra is sealed away, his children fight for the throne, the Eldstar wins

-He then gets married to Mamar and has his four sons: Skolar, Kalmar, Muskular, and Klevar (again, I promise those are titles not their birth names)

-Lady Misstar wanted in on the high life and so started pretty much dating all of his sons at once, girl wanted the benefits of dating what are essentially star princes, good for her

-Fuck around and find out though, she has Twink pretty much on accident

-Star law says that stars are not allowed to have children with one another unless they’re married (a law made by Aludra to try and stop the overpopulation problem). but Klevar does not want to marry her

- so she does what any gaslight gatekeep girlboss would do, she lies to the stupidest of the children and says it’s his and she marries Muskular instead.

- he’s just happy to have a kid, he knows that ain’t his boy but he’s happy :]

-Twink is sent down to Starborn valley for his younger years just like any other star, no special treatment for him

-BACK TO THE SMITHY SIDE OF THINGS and oh this is where it gets complicated and ridiculous truly

- after his brother takes the throne, Smithy goes to him and has the idea of making vessels for stars, big metal bodies to keep everyone safe as stars are vulnerable little things. I mean just look at them

-Eldstar approves and they make the factory

- at first the factory is filled with volunteer stars who want to help but as progress is slow, they leave, Smithy is spiraling into madness

- well the factory needs workers, Eldstar starts letting his brother use children to work there

- Smithy has hundreds of kids with hundreds of other stars, he also takes orphaned stars to work the factory. Most die.

-They also serve as the star’s army, conquering more land and defending the haven

-He also forces his brother Boomer and his son to help him. Boomer’s son, Punchinello, would eventually flee the factory and hide on earth, settling in there

- Geno is one of his kids, he’s part of the latest and last group of kids. He’s towards the middle of the group

-Geno also flees the factory after realizing his father is out of his mind. He flees in one of his father’s wooden prototypes and dumps it on earth before hiding in space

-The Eldstar eventually finally realizes this has gone too far and tells Smithy to shut down the factory program, which Smithy retaliates by destroying the star road

-SMRPG happens. Smithy and his kids go to jail, they were bad

-at this point in personal lore/lore with my buddy, they are out of jail and the kids are all living together and patching things up

-there is also another darkstar, that’s Nebula, poor Yarid has been raising the damned thing

-also Yarid’s boyfriend. Yeah, we made him up sort of on accident. We had a list of canon characters. And we were gonna give him a boyfriend from those. Then we made Misha on accident and their interactions were nice so he got the role instead. Twas an fun surprise

-I think that’s mostly everything other than talking about Estelle, Castor, and Constella

-but essentially they were told by the higher stars. Oh hey, do you want a kid? We’ll let you have one without getting married, just for you because you are so special but don’t tell anyone they’ll get jealous :)) and then took their kids and put them in the factory

- also yes, all five of the axems were born at the same time, it was a terrible surprise. Their father had a meltdown. And they really did just name them each a color

-Also Trickstar is not on the star chart bc his title is a lie he is a comet not a star

-I THINK THATS EVERYTHING. HOPEFULLY

okay so about genuinely good writing (although I'm generally a stephenie meyer apologist about her writing so take this with a grain of salt) but I actually think the passage in eclipse where jacob is like, “if you had met me first and edward never moved to forks we would have fallen in love and made a life together” and bella is like, “yknow yeah you're probably right” and pictures the children she would have had with jacob. and idk I just always thought that was such a fascinating end to the love triangle. admitting that a life with jacob would have been effortless had she not met edward. (and low-key I wish there was some kind of fic where this did happen and then edward moved to forks when bella was in her forties because THAT would be a better love story than twilight just based on how creepy it would be)

SM has talked about this too; she has a bit in her Eclipse FAQ on her website that makes it pretty clear that Bella does not have just "love him like family" feelings for Jacob:

Bella does not fall in love with Jacob in Eclipse. Bella falls in love with Jacob in New Moon. I think it’s easy to understand why this fact doesn’t occur to her. Bella has only fallen in love one time, and it was a very sudden, dramatic, sweep-you-off-your-feet, change-your-world, magical, passionate, all-consuming thing (see: Twilight). Can you blame her for not recognizing a much more subtle kind of falling-in-love? Does this love devaluate her love for Edward? Not for me. For me, it makes that perfect true love stronger. Bella has another option. She has a really good one. An option that’s easier in many ways, that takes nothing—like her family, present or future—away from her. She would have love, and friendship, and family—an enviable human future. But she chooses Edward over all of this. This makes it real for me.

But then she goes and make Jacob her future son-in-law so like, IDK. Weird choice, there.

Anyway yes I agree that were was something really beautiful and bittersweet about the realization that she could have had a happy life with Jacob. I particularly remember, "I could see years passing, and meaning something as they passed, changing me," which is a stark contrast to the frozen existence of the vampires. . . and then she chose to also force Jacob not to age by having him imprinting on an immortal half-vampire and again I'm left scratching my head.

I still think Jacob/Bella got away from her in the middle books; that she found herself more interested in them, in him, than made sense if she wanted to stick to the E/B, Jacob/Renesmee ending and then had to scramble in her edit of Forever Dawn into Breaking Dawn to try and get that genie back in the bottle and it just . . . never quite worked IMO.

and yknow when i say that koryak should've lived and him and garth should've become besties i don't mean that they would have a perfectly healthy cute brother relationship. i mean they should've trauma bonded aldhg

garth and koryak are two very different people, who lived very different lives, and have very different opinions of arthur. if the two of them were forced to bond in any capacity, it would be messy and petty! koryak would continue to be upset that arthur wasn't there for him in his youth and jealous that he raised a kid who wasn't even his. and if koryak stuck around, we'd see more negative emotions from garth ie him being upset/jealous/worried that arthur now has another biological son. it wouldn't be rational from either side, and garth would definitely try his best to be nice, but both of them have reasons to not like or trust the other.

that being said, at the core of it, their emotions stem from the same issue. they both just want to be arthur's son. and while i do think it would take a lot of time, eventually they'd be forced to see the other's perspective and realize that the other is just as jealous as they are. koryak may have missed out on having a bio father in his life but... so did garth. garth worries that arthur doesn't see him as a true son but... so does koryak. yes, they've had very different upbringings, but they also have the same fears and worries regarding arthur. and personally, i think it would've been more interesting to see them reconcile and bond over that.

maybe koryak would be brave enough to ask garth what his childhood was like under arthur's care. maybe garth takes the time to ask about kako or his culture. maybe he even tells koryak the truth about what happened with jr. maybe koryak starts to get upset on garth's behalf that arthur raised him but didn't even see him as a son, and had the audacity to say it to his face while trying to kill him. maybe garth gets upset on koryak's behalf because arthur keeps pushing him aside and treating him like an untrustworthy stranger.

and yknow maybe they never become friends or talk to each other... but they still understand each other, they still yearn for what the other had, and they're increasingly more disappointed in how arthur treats his family. i think that would've been nice and more narratively satisfying than koryak dying.

yknow. while theres obvs a whole host of deliberate references saltburn pulls from mythology and classic literature, theres a lot of more contemporary, probably unintentional parallels i noticed could be drawn as well! (mainly my own faves bc my favorite hobby is projection)

so, in no particular order:

saw 2004. this ones a bit of a stretch but i mean, cmon. homoerotic bathtub. also the twist villain (ish), themes of vouyerism, playing games with peoples motives, pitting people against each other and exploiting power dynamics+dirty laundry. and the class disparity between the two love interests (yes saw is also a gay romantic tragicomedy to me. sorry)

dark shadows (the movie not the show) oliver is very vampire coded (i need to make a whole separate post abt that tbh) so hes barnabus collins. pamela is the redheaded dr. cotton whose overstayed her welcome. "the eggs are made for you. everything else is on the side"🤝"we dont have horses. we have a chevy". tragic gothic murder-(almost)-suicide romance. ig this makes felix josette, venetia carolyn, and farleigh the spooky little kid who can talk to ghosts,,,,,? eh yea ok its not a 1:1 ratio

hereditary. elspeths scream finding felixs body in the morning. the tendency to just fully suppress trauma until its impossible to ignore at which point it spills out in the most ghastly ridiculous ways. the undercurrent of intergenerational mother-son trauma. the way they both seem to juggle two focuses at once, one focus being interpersonal dynamics, the other being class commentary (or supernatural horror in hereditary, though id argue saltburn succeeds at this where hereditary falls flat) also the twist that its not in fact the family thats scary and culty and weird and ultimately the biggest threat, but an outsider (hated that twist in hereditary, loved it in saltburn)

sucker punch. again the theme of vouyerism! also consent, sexuality, and hypersexuality, getting by on charisma in a losing battle when surrounded by those with systemic power over you (farliegh ily mwuah), the fine line between desire and glorification and dehumanization, and how it forces the audience to do the uncomfortable work of reconciling our desire to take the eroticism presented to us at face value and sexualize the characters and their relationships, with the power imbalances and therefore inherently dubious consent between them (and us, the audience)

a girl walks home alone at night. this ones mainly just the title, but again i just really like the subversion of expectation that oliver is gonna be the one helplessly sucked into this whirlwind of danger, when in reality, hes the threat. and both the cattons and we ourselves as the audience wholly underestimate him due to the implicit biases it forces us to reconsider

the hunger games. more vouyerism, the way it catches the audience in wanting to focus on the romance because its comfortable and what we're used to, rather than actually look beyond the surface and engage with the power imbalances, particularly the classim and racism commentary. also that scene where oliver looks out the cab window and sees saltburn for the first time reminded me a lot of peeta and katniss looking out the train seeing the capitol

euphoria. ik yall noticed the jules and felix parallel w the angel wings, and duh jacob elordi is in both. but can i also pose that they both have themes of coodependancy and love as addiction and favorite persons and not loving someone as a person but simply loving to be loved. and also body glitter and cocaine

ok please know I’m with you on the obvious of. Yes Mia is ollie’s daughter. really don’t want this question to be taken as a question about that

Why do you think ollie can be somewhat cagey about calling her his daughter? Do you think he’s reluctant to put himself in that relationship because he’s not sure what Mia wants from him, or more because he’s feeling insecure in his ability to be a father after the whole death and resurrection

i mean u did answer ur own question very well here, but to expand on the two points i believe to be most to true character,

ollie doesnt have a great track record with fatherhood, he's already messed up more than he ever wanted to, and though he has since reconciled and made up for those mistakes, he is terrified of repeating them. To quote connor, he's a "wanna-be dad" he loves to take care of kids, thats a through line in pretty much every single era of his, whether its his own like roy or connor, or those he just comes across, like onyx, the kids at the youth centre, even marianne, etc, but as you said he IS insecure in his ability. It is especially hard with mia because, and this leads into the second part;

TW FOR TALK OF CSA

mia does not have a good experience with father figures, or even older men in general, hell just men in general. But for this specifically, her father raped and abused her for years, then when she got out of that, the next adult figure she found, her pimp, did the same. Even AFTER ollie finds her, the other older man she meets is stanley, and she lets herself feel safe there, then he turns out to also want the same thing everyone else did.

ollie is acutely aware of all of this, and he doesnt want to force any kind of expectation of familial dynamic on her, nor does mia expect anything like that. in mia's mind, at least in the beginning, if she does not go to school and help around the centre, she will get kicked out. this of course isnt true but to her she needs to be useful or they'll have no reason to keep her there. she's so unused to father figures just wanting to keep her safe that she instinctually develops a crush on ollie, assuming thats what he wants her there for. this is not the makings of a quick and easy father adopting daughter scenario.

every time mia is hurt, or ollie screws up, he implodes in on himself, its a repeated thing in the run, he shuts down, he doesn't believe in his ability to keep mia safe, but its still better than the alternative.

later on in the run, as mia gets more comfortable, its harder to explain why that relationship never develops fully other than winick just didn't have the chops to write it. but i will say, even with connor and roy's relationship with him very much being father/son, they call him ollie more than they ever do dad. so yknow. take that as you will

that... that could actually be a legit idea.

like imagine, Alden gets up on Fitz's case because Fitz is really just not in the mood to date anyone, he doesn't want to. It's not something he's interested in, and literally everyone is chill about it except the adults, who think that the Golden Vacker Child(tm) should really be getting along and finding that perfect bride. Alden's worried that Fitz is still hung up on Sophie, which would be bad because Sophie's an awful genetic mistake and would be bad for their family's reputation. Della's worried that her son is abnormal, or there's something wrong with him. The grandparents are all asking about children and dating and matchmaking and whatever and Fitz just wants none of it.

And so, Linh kind of just presents the idea. At a winnowing gala she was forced into a dress that itches and burns on her wrists, that makes the water louder and hurts her back and her shoulders. She's sitting next to him at his gala, because really, she's the only one who knows him. No one else cares about anything but the idea of a golden child, a perfect husband, and Linh is simply a friend who just happened to be on the list.

"Fitz," she says, one day, when he's halfway to tears over the fact that his dad came by and half-ordered him to start dancing with his matches. "I'm on your list. You can dance with me."

He takes her gloved hand, and she pretends she can't feel the water in his blood pulsing through him with every heartbeat. That she can't understand the dangerous whispers of the sweat on the back of his neck. Because, firstly, that's odd. Secondly, none of her business what his water is up to.

"My parents have been literally shoving me towards marriage, too, and I literally would rather die. Like, honestly."

Fitz laughs, like, "Me too."

She thinks on it for a moment. "Fitz," she says, "What number match am I, on your list?"

"A hundred and seventy," he said, pointing at the ribbon with the numbers on it. "And that's if and only if my dad's okay with me marrying a twin. I think he'd kill me for it."

"My dad would kill to have me marry a Vacker," Linh answered, simply. "But we don't have to get married. We just have to occupy our parents' minds long enough until they can't push us into it, anymore."

Seventeen year old Fitz squints at sixteen year old Linh. "What?"

"I'm saying," she said, her voice getting a bit gentler. "We fool them. You're like, my older brother who cares too much and it comes out in angry ways, sometimes."

Fitz chuckled, almost sadly. "You're the most powerful hydrokinetic the world has ever seen. You're so impressive, it's scary. And you're also like, Biana's friend. I can't date you."

"I don't want to date you," Linh said. "You're not my type. No one has been, so far," she said, her voice getting a little quieter, more embarrassed. "It's weird, I know."

Fitz shook his head. "Not weird," he said. "I know exactly what you mean."

"I suggest," Linh said, a tentative smile forming on her lips, "That we, like. Fake date? Friend-date? Tell our parents that we're head over heels for each other, just to keep them occupied in their own ideas of who we are, but just," she smiled, there. "You like baking, right?"

Fitz nodded.

"We can bake together. Dex has been meaning to get me into movies lately, anyhow. He mentioned you liked some series called Harry Potter?"

Fitz smiled, just a little. "Yeah," he said.

Linh sighed. "I care about you, you know that. But it's not a lovey-dovey kind of way. I don't tend to care about people like that. And it sounds like you don't either."

Fitz nodded.

"So," she said, a smile forming across her lips, hopeful and excited. "Baking date, this sunday? Just for fun?"

Something inside Fitz relaxed, his heart and mind stopping churning.

"Linh," he said, "I think you're the best person in the whole world."

The hydrokinetic giggled, and it sounded like she'd relaxed some, too. "Well," she said, "I don't think I am, Fitz. But I'm glad you're up for enjoying my company."

OK I JUST NEED TO TALK ABT CHLOE BOURGEOIS AGAIN NO ONE LOOK AT ME

seeing chloe be SO casual about being akumatized despite the implied effects it has on people is REALLY fucking funny and good but consider my very cool very nice very epic alternative of chloe choosing to dwell on negative feelings JUST to get akumatized because that's the ONLY time people will actually worry about her and treat her like a victim/real person, even if its out of DUTY like ladybug and cat noir. not just akumatized bc she wants to be a bully and then have all the other villains treat her like a nuisance for no fucking reason

you can even keep her being super casual and happy about being akumatized, it fits within this entire thing too, shes happy because people are gonna be forced to pay attention to her one way or another

then realizing that it's not enough because everyone knows she's being this rotten and getting herself akumatized on purpose, so she resorts to straight up becoming a villain because negative attention is still attention in the end ???

chloe as queen bee finally seeing one of her heroes treat her (albeit reluctantly since. yknow, marinette) like a human being with potential. and then wanting to become a better person as a result, but not being able to progress as fast as she wants to bc you just cant undo all those years of bullying in a second. and changing for the better takes so much effort and time too. THAT mixed with marinette and her PTSD being unable to reconcile with the fact that chloe, the person who made her life so awful as seen in derision, is TRYING to be better, leading to ladybug

chloe as miracle queen AND queen wasp still being effectively manipulated by monarch because "hey, another deeply insecure and damaged child, just like my son! lets take advantage of that". like. they had the set up already, with chloe wanting to trust ladybug and rejecting a goddamn akuma bc SOMEONE finally trusted HER to be more than a shitty rich brat. EVEN if ladybug wasnt gonna give her the bee miraculous anymore, chLOE STILL MADE BABY STEPS INTO BEING A BETTER PERSON????

you can still keep lila and monarch's constant manipulation, getting chloe to be worse and straight up hate ladybug, its the perfect set up. idk why they just had to retcon or forget everything they had for chloe in the first seasons????????

like, this season was really good at giving marinette more depth, taking some aspects that were played for fun in the first seasons AS SERIOUS THINGS NOW, like her out of the blue obsessive nature that EVERYONE (me included) complained about. a lot of the episodes are really well written and theres ACTUAL ADVANCEMENT in plot and character dynamics but chloe is straight up STUCK as the mid arc villain whose dialogue has been demoted to "i hate the poor and i hate the planet and i love the sound of my own voice" with zero depth whatsoever????????????????????????

love your thoughts about how people are giving regulus sirius' traits! i also feel like there's this drarryfication of jegulus happening in the fandom right now. i've seen so many posts lately being like "how did i never ship drarry, they are literally jegulus" or "same ship, different fonts" and i just... disagree? completely? like, yeah, there are similarities obviously but if you actually think about it just a little bit further than the surface level "potter boy dates slytherin who at one point was a death eater" they're entirely different

Hey there hayati <3 i told myself "keep this short" but ended up writing an entire character analysis so please excuse me for this. I highlighted my key thoughts with bold, if you dont want to read everything.

Tbh I haven't seen as much "drarryfiction" of Jegulus, but maybe that's because I barely engage with the Jegulus fandom at all anymore, so I don't see it.

There are some similarities, and I do like when people draw parallels (especially seeing how Draco is a Black as well), but not beyond anything superficial.

Drarry is by far much more nuanced and developed than Jegulus (it wasn't always like this, I remember when Drarry was also unbearably cringey and obnoxious - sadly most people remember them by that - but it's gone a long way since). James and Regulus have the potential to be even more than that, but from the fics I read, the fandom still has a long way to go with them.

Draco and Regulus are actually more similar than most people think, I wish people would let Regulus be a snobbish, arrogant, cocky jerk like Draco is allowed to be in Drarry. But I also think that Regulus would be so much smarter than him (I mean-- it took Draco a whole year to figure out how that closet [forgot the name] he let the DEs through worked, he's not exactly bright, yknow what I mean?; while Reg canonically figured out the Horcrux thing by himself, the only person other than him being Dumbledore and his 'gang').

Also while I do think that Regulus is much more arrogant and self confident than most portray him to be, it would be in a radically different way from Draco, who was raised as the only long-awaited son by Lucius and Cissy, who obviously spoiled him into oblivion. Reg on the other hand had a stricter upbringing, I think he would be more elegant about it, less "my father will hear about this" and more "do you know who I am?". I think he wouldn't necessarily go out of his way to "bully" anyone, but if someone looked at him the wrong kind of way, he would hex them on spot.

Another key difference is that Draco, the way we see it, was very much pressured and forced to take the Mark. I don't think he was willingly seeking out any "power" beyond simple school bullying. Reg, on the other hand? And that's one of my biggest pet peeves - how in so many fics Regulus is literally forced to take it by Walburga and Orion. While from every existing implication in canon, it's pretty clear that he was actively seeking out some kind of power in the war (in combination with the desire to provide security and safety to himself and his family).

But overall, I think the main difference between Drarry vs Jegulus is in Harry (vs James), not in Draco. Harry comes from the muggle world (vs James who comes from a known pure blooded family), from relative poverty (vs James who comes from riches), from an abusive home (vs James whos the only one in his friend group w a stable home life), from a position of having the "chosen one" title shoved down his throat without asking (vs James who seeks out glory). Harry is very introverted (James is loud and confident, surrounded by people), Harry is not very good w people (James is the life of the party), Harry just wants people to leave him alone in peace (James led all of his friends to join the Order and fight in the war). Harry was forced into the life he had while James chose it. In a way, Drarry both were forced into their fate, while in Jegulus they both actively chose it.

James -and maybe its an unpopular opinion but- is also a very underdeveloped character, even more so than Regulus (he was written for years as a side character with Lily to Wolfstar, and hasn't gotten any "main character" spotlight up until recently, so maybe he just didn't have the time yet?). He is often reduced to being the "golden retriever mum friend" (?) and often feels like a supporting character, even in fics where he's supposed to be the main lead character/narrator? (what?)

In this sense I do wish Jegulus was more like Drarry because in the latter, I feel like at this point in fandom, after so many years, both Draco and Harry get equal amount of attention to their issues. In Jegulus it feels like...James is just kind of there to be Reg's therapist? He is there to "fix him" while getting nothing in return?

James' main negative traits, in my opinion, are that he is very hypocritical, self-righteous and also the only one in his circle with the real privilege to see the world as strictly black and white (which in canon also eventually leads to his death). I think Regulus and Lily are both good for him in the sense that they force him to see the world in a more nuanced light. I want to see Jegulus where just like James explains to Reg "hey those words your mates are using? thats not cool", Reg also, in return, explains to James "hey people arent just bad and good, its more complicated than that".

Moving on, I also think that while Drarry is a proper "enemies to lovers" trope, Jegulus aren't really enemies right away. They do have negative opinions of e/o at first, but it's deeper and more personal than that. In James' eyes, Regulus is his best mate's little brother, who stands for all those things that hurt Sirius; in Reg's eyes, James is the guy who took Sirius from them.

This is another trope I hate in Jegulus fics - how James seems to like Reg straight away, while Regulus is wary of him at first - if anything, it would be the OPPOSITE. I can absolutely see Regulus interacting with James one-on-one for the first time and being like "hmmm Sirius might be onto something with that Potter guy" but James would NEVER like Regulus right away, it quite literally goes against everything he believes in.

This is why I think Jegulus is good for James (better than any other ship), because it's the ONLY dynamic in which he is forced to face himself and everything he was raised on and kind of re-evaluate his world view. I absolutely see James and Lily (in a reality where Jegulus is a thing and Lily find out about it) sitting down and Lily being like "hey you sure you're not doing the exact same thing you told me I was doing with Snape?" and James absolutely freaking about about it.

bonus rant feat. snape:

(and when you think about- yes, Jegulus and Snily actually have a whole lot of common. I already said this one on here and was absolutely butchered for it but I will say it again - Snily and Jegulus are awfully similar. James(/Lily) ignoring how all of Regulus'(/Snape's) surrounding and close friends are pure blood supermacists and wannabe death eaters; James(/Lily) ignoring how despite Reg(Snape) suffering, he is insistent on staying in the same place he is in (his family) and not changing anything to get out; James (Lily) justifying Regulus'(Snape's) bad deeds by telling himself that he had (has) a rough childhood and he "can fix him"; James (Lily) ignoring Regulus'(Snape's) hostile behavior towards his (her) friends in favor of a "better" version of Regulus (Snape) that only exists when he's alone with James (Lily); James and Lily both ignoring every red flag in existence until they are forced to look at the actual Dark Mark on their arm.

Regulus is actually more similar to Snape in a lot of ways than the fandom would like to admit - Reg would dislike him at first out of a "who does that nameless half-blood think he is, challenging me like that" place, but ultimately, I think they have more things in common than apart. Both followed the Dark Lord seeking power only to later turn on him, both had people they still cared for on the other side (Lily; Sirius), both had the "young mad scientist" vibes (seeing how Reg found out about the Horcruxes, I assume he was also messing with Dark Magic and spell creation at a young age like Snape))
