to me, the funniest thing about “that’s rough buddy” isn’t the fact that sokka says something patently insane with zero context seemingly out of nowhere, or the fact that zuko clearly doesn’t know how to respond. it’s the completely incorrect use of the word “buddy.” zuko would obviously like to be friends with sokka, but sokka is not, in fact, his friend. this is the most time they’ve ever spent together, and it’s because zuko invited himself to tag along on sokka’s suicide mission. at this point in the episode, sokka still hates this guy, perhaps less than he did a week ago, but he still hates him enough that he didn’t bother forcing zuko to stay home, which means he still didn’t really care whether or not zuko lives or dies. which, considering that he had tried to kill zuko multiple times in the past, is not all that surprising. this entire episode is essentially just zuko forcing his friendship onto sokka while sokka is legitimately too depressed to care. so when zuko calls sokka “buddy,” there’s a spirit of dogged optimism characterizing that epithet, because in no possible realm would sokka consider zuko his buddy at this point in the episode. and that’s something we miss when noting the iconicness of this exchange, simply because, by the end of this episode, they are buddies, so in our minds looking back on these lines, the implication of friendship doesn’t feel out of place at all. and really, it isn’t out of place, but only because zuko’s tenacity and determination (in this instance, his determination to befriend sokka) has always hugely outweighed his ability to read the room.

sokka is absolutely the kind of guy that requires head scratches. at the end of a long day there is no better way to unwind than lay on the sofa between zuko’s legs, with his back to zuko’s chest while he runs his fingers through his hair. there’s something so calming in receiving scalp scratches, it instantly flips the switch in sokka’s restless brain and he usually ends up dozing off in the movie’s first 20 minutes. whether it be zuko’s hands running down his nape or skirting along his temples, there are very specific patterns sokka likes, and he’s also rather demanding and strict with the grades he gives zuko’s scratches (cause you know zuko is competitive af and never misses the chance to strive for a full 10).

sokka is also the biggest back stratches enjoyer. some nights he drops on zuko’s chest and requires back scratches like an overworked, petulant panther; zuko will nose the crown of his head, place a soft kiss there, and gently start scratching warm expanses of skin, feeling the muscle in sokka’s back gradually relax and distend. it’s a soothing activity for both of them, because sokka’s happy sighs and his grounding weight, the awareness that he’s safe in zuko’s arms is also comforting for zuko.

I think it’s so funny during the exchange on the balloon when sokka is like, “yeah being good at war seems to run in the family,” and zuko gets all defensive and goes, “hold on, not everyone is like that!” and at first sokka thinks he’s talking about himself, but then zuko reveals that he’s talking about his uncle. and sokka just has to sit there mentally calculating whether it would be a good idea to bring up the fact that historically, his uncle is great at war. if i had to attempt to transcribe his inner monologue in that moment it would just be “don’t bring up the dragon of the west don’t bring up the dragon of the west this guy is willingly sacrificing his life for your self-indulgent suicide mission you need him on your side don’t bring up the dragon of the west…” at which point he then looks back up at zuko and says thru gritted teeth, “haha yeah. no, cuz like, totally. for sure.”
