(yes this is about the recent haikyuu magazine that revealed suga contacts him regularly to chat about volleyball and their friends🥹)

yeah yeah yeah tanaka is a good upperclassman beloved by (most of) the first-years BUT. can we talk about how tanaka has so much respect and admiration for asahi, daichi, and suga???

suga: man he's so talented and good at this i'm not even in his realm of awareness

kageyama, completely lost in the sauce: oh no i gotta apologize to my senior setter cause he's more experienced than me and he knows how to talk to people

i know that we love to talk about how much kageyama learned from suga, but it's important to remember that it went both ways, because suga learned from kageyama as well.

when we first meet suga, he's (quietly) shouldering the blame for asahi and noya leaving. kageyama shows up, and suga's relieved that there's a setter better than him because he won't have to handle that responsibility of guiding the ace, of getting the ball to his spikers. he thinks that maybe he can fall back into the shadows, because karasuno has a genius setter now, so what use would they have for a regular one?

and yet.

kageyama wants to fight suga for the position. "the gap in experience between us isn't that easily overcome!" "suga-san, you better not be doing this to give me the position." he knows he's good. but he still respects suga, as a senpai, as another setter, and kageyama knows that he has shortcomings in areas that suga excels at.

and he says as much to suga. and suga promises to fight him for that starting position.

by the time the shiratorizawa match comes around, suga has gained so much more confidence. but he admits that he's still scared of being blocked and he does not have the same unwavering faith in his spikers (in himself) that kageyama does. he acknowledges that it is a relief having kageyama there.

and yet he steps onto the court anyways.

because suga doesn't give up. even when he's scared (not anymore).

and what happens is this: suga goes to spike (something he is terrified of) and tendou blocks him. and suga simply promises to do it again. and when the time comes, suga runs forward without hesitation, and tendou leaps to block him, because to him, the ball has to be going to suga.

(and then it doesn't, and tendou realizes he was wrong, and suga's smiling and promising to do it again.)

when we first meet suga, he's relieved that there's a better setter than him.

in a few months' time, that is no longer the case.

Look me in the eye and tell me atsumu wouldn't be the kind of guy to not understand why he feels a certain way towards you, you can't! His whole life he's had medicore social skills, and I hc that he's never really dated anyone before, so romantic relationships are an untouched territory to him. It's gonna take him a few reality checks from osamu to realize he likes anyone, even better if the person he likes is just as clueless.

Not in a professional setting. More in a "my friend said you could help me learn this recipe, can you pleaseee teach me" way. And he reluctantly agrees and he looks fine as hell cooking that you're barely learning how to make the actual meal. Better yet? "I don't know how to do this" "oh let me help you" And then he comes up behind you to guide you better.. chest against your back and everything (you're not learning anything)

Everyone knows you're childhood friends and everyone knows there must be something between you. But neither of you act on it until one day you're asked out by someone and sugawara finally realizes "if I don't act quickly I will lose them" so he shows up to your house dramatic as hell in the rain and kisses you until you stop considering any other guy at all

☆ Tooru - rivals/enemies to lovers

You can't look at a guy who's this competitive, cocky, and petty, and not think he'd make a perfect rival love interest. Not only would he drive his opponent to do better and discover crazy things themselves (make them have a very dramatic realization moment), but the tension after either of them win is insane. He's like "I'll get you next time, be ready." And they're like "yeah sure pretty boy" and people have to stop and stare. The sexual tension is crazy

☆ Kiyoomi - reluctant friends to lovers

He doesn't want anything to do with them. At least for the first few times they meet. They follow him around like a lost puppy, looking for something or asking for instructions. And he's very cold to them on purpose, hoping they'd just leave him alone once he answers their questions. But then they start waving at him when they're standing with their friends, bringing him snacks he didn't ask for, speedwalking to catch up with him before he leaves, and he seriously has to reconsider why someone he saw as a pest is slowly growing to become a source of great comfort to him.

☆ Issei - best friends to lovers

It's essential to imagine being close friends with all of seijoh 4 and being especially close with issei to fully enjoy this. Since you're used to oikawa flirting with you here and there, and makki + issei himself always teasing you, it's not easy to tell when exactly his flirtations cross the line between platonic and romantic. No one is surprised when you start dating, actually they probably had a bet going on about it, and not much changes in your dynamic other than the fact that you and mattsun now kiss instead of joking about it.

this has become a pivotal part of his character in my head kuroo tetsurou doesn’t know Anything about astrology but uses it to insult people and thinks he’s so fucking funny. the extent of his knowledge is the names of the signs and that’s all he needs does he know anyone’s sign? no he doesn’t need to the jabs still land he’s a Master instigator.

bokuto buys a lottery ticket doesn’t win anything complains about it over lunch kuroo raises an eyebrow says “it’s cuz you’re a sagittarius” goes back to eating. it only works bc he’s so quick with it yaku gets pissed off starts yelling in the locker room kuroo elbows lev “pisces men ammirite?” eyebrows exaggeratedly high head tilted dramatically turns away starts tying his shoes. akaashi’s talking about a restaurant he went to - the atmosphere was great but the food was just okay - kuroo scoffs “that’s such a virgo thing to say” kejii blinks flips him off keeps talking. kenma forgets his keys at home locks himself out calls kuroo “you’re such a fucking capricorn” hangs up immediately . one day at practice everyone’s off their game he calls a huddle stands with a hand on his hip looks around “guys. is it because mercury’s in retrograde?” Dead silence coach nekomata puts his head in his hands and ends practice early. kuroo meets oikawa for the first time 10 minutes in interrupts him mid-sentence finger in the air smirk on his face “i bet you’re a leo moon” “What. is that supposed to mean.”

it’s mostly for the bit though kuroo doesn’t believe in astrology by principle like “i am the master of my fate” or whatever But. but. he swears up and down he doesn’t trust geminis. daichi introduces him to sugawara (gemini sticker on his phone) kuroo narrows his eyes in suspicion no wonder he’s so good at volleyball. he claims his lack of trust is cuz koushi cheats at monopoly (he does) but no. gemini.

Low key writing an iwaoisuga fanfic in which modern day 29 year old elementary school teacher accidentally breaks a thousand year old spell sealing away the demon king and his knight and now he feels morally obligated to watch over them because Oikawa is 100% down to destroy humanity for sealing him away and Iwaizumi might just let him because he’s kinda pissed too, and Suga doesn’t want that to happen. Luckily after 1000 years Oikawa’s powers are coming back slowly so Suga has time to convince him to not kill everyone and wow them both with the concept of a grocery store.
