Greek Mythology PSA

As much as I love Achilles and Patroclus from TSOA: Achilles is NOT someone to idolize.

The story of Troilus was an extreme reason: when he turned 20, he would supposedly touch the wall of Troy and it would save this. Athena told Achilles this and he went to ambushed Troilus by the well, in fact pulling him by the hair off his horse.

But Troilus was extremely beautiful- so much so that he was said to be the child of Apollo. Achilles was overcome with lust and tried to make advances.

Troilus escaped his grasp and ran to his fathers temple for shelter. There Achilles caught him again, had his way, and beheaded him.

ACHILLES WAS A GROWN MAN AND TROILUS WAS SAID TO BE A CHILD, MOST SPECULATED TO BE AROUND 12.

Was he a great warrior? Yeah. Was he a murder, r**ist, and p3do? Also yes.

Why are there so little stories about Apollo and Hyacinthus?

Look, I hung back and let these Greek myth retellings character assassinate Apollo, but now they're advancing on my boys Dionysus and Perseus and I'm not gonna stand for that. The absolute disrespect to a god whose majority of followers were women and to a Greek hero whose whole motive to go on a quest was to protect his mother from a marriage she didn't want.

The gall, the audacity, the gumption, the complete and utter willfully ignorant misunderstanding of these characters. There are plenty of other male characters to turn into two-dimensional misogynist caricatures. Do those. Try Agamemnon for the fiftieth time. You could actually manage to strike a few points of accuracy there while blindfolded.

Everyday I am mad that there is a not a Greek mythology show that’s in the format of The Office / Modern Family. DO YOU KNOW HOW GOOD THAT WOULD BE

Like c’mon. You’d have Hera and Zeus as the parents. And then you have all of Zeus’s kids. You’d have the younger gods, Hermes, Dionysus, Apollo and Artemis as the teenagers and then Ares, Athena, and Hephaestus as the young adults. And then you’d have the six kids of Kronos as the uncles and aunts. And Kronos is just this really annoying racist grandpa who thinks that Titans are better than gods. And Rhea divorced him years ago but they all still come to family reunions. Hermes annoys the heck out of Apollo (stole his cows when he was a baby in the myths). And Artemis only hangs out with Aunt Hestia and Athena. Hermes and Dionysus would be chaotic brothers. And Athena and Ares play brutal Monopoly/Risk games. And Aphrodite is the matchmaking MILF who married Hephaestus for his money but is actually sleeping with Ares. And everyone knows that Zeus cheats and Hera constantly tries to sabotage him and his kids. Maybe she constantly tries to murder him, but it never works or something-

BUT EITHER WAY I WANT IT. Like Hollywood makes a hundred terrible movies a year. Just scrap those and use the money make this. Please.

And it doesn’t even have to be set in modern day. You could do it in ancient times too. It doesn’t matter. Just make it. PLEASE I AM BEGGING

This is a quick PSA,

I see a lot of people in this fandom using Roman sources like Ovid to make conclusions about Greek gods.

I’m not here to be mean, but rather to remind y’all that Roman sources on mythology are valid, but only when discussing Roman mythology itself. It is not a viable source for Greek mythology.

And therefore, not a viable source to justify Rachel’s portrayal of the gods, considering she is using Greek gods set in Ancient Greek times.

If you want to discuss accuracy and provide insight in LO, please use Greek sources and also sources in general instead of just saying something.

I honestly will doubt an argument without a source. People are too comfortable spreading misinformation about greek mythology so please provide a source.

I want to start reading books what do you recommend?

I don't know what you're looking for specifically so I'll make a big list of advice, just read the parts you care about and have fun :)

•For some advice!•

NEVER be afraid of looking something up. That's how you learn. I spent most of my time learning English by just looking up whatever I didn't get, and now I'm a fluid speaker with a vocabulary big enough to match my ego.

This is personal but god stay off tik tok or "booktok" or whatever I promise your'e not missing out on anything please save yourself PLEASE

•Where to get books?•

Go to your local library and be very very nice and polite to a librarian and ask if they have any book recommendations or ask if they happen to have books about something that interests you and if you find something then get a library card and borrow them and be careful with them and bring them back on time. This has been my library PSA.

•Book recommendations for starting out•

Okay if you're Just getting into reading books at ALL then I'd recommend these book series meant for teenagers to young adults:

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children

What if circus performances were real? But with time travel and monsters and war.

Artemis Fowl

Do you wanna see a capitalist child exploit the fairy world for money?

Percy Jackson

Okay you probably know this one. Greek mythology is real and it's coming to get you. Probably the funniest narrator I've ever seen. God Percy is so cool I wish he didn't go to hell all the time

Skullduggery Pleasant

Jazz music. Skeletons. Mystery. Throw fireballs at stuff until you figure your life out.

•My personal favourites•

These are mostly pretty easy to read fiction, but uh I'm not gonna recommend Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin to a beginner

Coraline

Charming protagonist, creepy yet intriguing, god i love Neil gaiman

Six of Crows

Heist! Really cool magic system! Teenagers with invariably fucked up backstories! Gang violence but like for good reasons (probably)

The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet

Basically the opposite of star wars when it comes to world building (it's really good). Cruise through space and have fun reading about the bird people.

This Is How You Lose The Time War

I'm still crying. Time travel war spy love story. Poetic about finding ones humanity again. Made me a bit deranged. Might contain the meaning of life.

And most importantly:

DISC WORLD.

This is not longer a recommendation. I am making you read Disc World. They don't have to be read in order, but I suggest starting with Colour Of Magic. Really and truly some of the best books ever written. Fantasy and stretching magic rules until they break and shattering the fourth wall so the characters can pop in for some tea. Why not. We have imagination powered dragons and turtle powered planets. C'mon

Interaction PSA: On Verses & Verse Building!

-- Info pertaining to verses, AUs, verse-buildings, crossovers, etc. This series of PSAs is meant to accompany & further elaborate on some things in my updated rules. I link to them throughout not as required guidelines, but what I hope are helpful snippets for those looking for the best means of interacting! --

♥ I love verses. I love verse-building. I love AUs. That's it, y'all. That's the post. (I"m technically kidding, but it could be.) I love playing in other peoples' verses, I love people jumping into my verses, I love building a verse with a mun whether it's based on a series of canon-divergent what-ifs or taking our muses and throwing them into the setting or situations of another fandom we both enjoy... you name it.

♥ I am happy to write all the threads, in all the verses, all the time. I like having multiple things going on. I have verses that are spin-offs of other verses that only explore a minor deviation in the original premise of the verse. When I say I want to explore our muses in every possible scenario, I mean it - so if you're ever torn on options for a meme, or you've got a "well... we could do this, but we could also do this," situation, there is a high probability I'm just going to send you the "both is good" meme and ask what we're calling both of them.

Seriously. I have enough threads in enough verses going on with @climatact that I had to put together a thread directory. And I love every single one of them.

♥ Exploring canon-divergent "what if" scenarios is my favorite. Off the top of my head, some of the verses I've helped create or been a part of have been based around questions like these (shoutout to those reading their questions or ones we've discussed here, y'all know who you are):

• what if robin had found her way to the north & joined the donquixote family after aokiji sent her on her way from ohara? • what if bellemere had lived, nami had followed in her footsteps to become a marine, law & corazon had had more time together, and their search for a cure had taken them as far as the east? • what if law had stayed with the donquixote family (willingly or not?)

tl:dr; i love them. ask them. let's build verses from them!

♥ Other things I love building verses off of? Shared interests, tropes, and favorite fandoms.

we're watching the Percy Jackson show and i have thoughts... But I'm gonna rant under the cut cause they're not nice thoughts lol

Mandatory psa... This is my own personal subjective opinion! If you love the show and disagree with me, that's fine, i'm glad you like it, we're allowed our own oppinions. Don't be a dick, move on and have a great day!

My main issue with this show is with the director to be honest. The actors are ok, they're not gonna change the world with their acting but it's fine, they're good enough. But the pacing! The pacing of the whole thing is absolute shit!

Every episode is the same. Maybe 5 minutes of the gand walking around until they find either a god or a monster. The next 20 minutes are spent at a table (literally, there's always a table) while the god/monster tells them the story of why they're angry or wants to kill them. While the camera just pans from one face to another. And then the last 5 minutes of the episode it's a fight that gets solved either with more talking (including shots of each character's face) or with a "battle" that's one single move from the gang where they kill the monster in 5 seconds or the god just suddenly decides to help with no effort. Then the final couple of seconds are a clifhanger that does not get resolved in the next episode (what the fuck happened with the chimera in episode 4?!)

That's it, that's every single episode... what the fuck happened to "show don't tell" ?! Rule number one of visual media?!

There's this one bit in episode 5 when Percy and Annabetha re in the love tunnel thingy and Hephaestus' story is being shown in a cool fun animation on the walls. And instead of the camera focusing on that, we're just seeing Percy's face as he (quite expressionless) says "my mom told me this story", and other things we already knew.

Somehow they managed to make the show feel rushed, having so little time with each character (some barely in shot... I'm thinking of Timothy Omundsom ans Hephaestus), while also making it feel so boring and slow because they do nothing other than talk. It feels like they're just reading a big mythology book, when they're supposed to telling a story about these characters.

The plot in itself is fine I guess, nothing too original but that's not the show's fault. I admit not having read the books, but again, my problem isn't with the plot or even the characters. But it you're telling a story that is sort of known (you know the greek gods are not exactly an original thought), then perhaps you should focus on telling the story in a new, fun and innovative way. Having the characters literally sit around and tell the story to the viewer is NOT an innovative way of doing it. Especially when it's about greek gods and stuff...

I'm gonna finish the show, we only have 3 episodes left, but damn I'm disappointed. I had very high expectations because of Jonathan E. Steinberg and some of the cast... but it's just simply not a good show. It might eb a good adaptation, I don't know, I haven't read the books, but the way is written, directed and filmed... it does not make good television. In my opinion.

#my mom and i individually came to the same conclusion: this show feels like it was written by the people who wrote supernatural lol #and as someone who loved supernatural for a long time... i say this NOT as a compliment #that was a big messy rant #might be full of typos and sentences that don't make sense #i apologize but i don't really care #it's more for me than anyone else lol #angel talks #personal #my own personal opinion!!!!! don't get angryyyyy don't come at me lol #percy jackon and the olympians

I have a Masters in Classics and I dare not touch anything about Greek mythology on tumblr because over half of it is people trying to make their headcanons canon, uncited nonsense, and straight-up making shit up, all of which ends up becoming my job to clear up for a lot of clearly passionate but misguided college kids. Remember kids, don't just believe it because it's on the internet and sounds cool. Always look for cited sources and check reputable sources to see if they lend any credence to the claim. This also extends to pinterest, twitter, and most other social media platforms.
