“Oh my goodness.” you mutter as Abby’s jeep halts in the small parking spot right outside your home. Hi Charmful, I really love your amazing neighborhood! It is fantastic to see the passion you've put in this project for about 17 (!) years! What advice would you give to someone who wishes to start their own custom hood with many subhoods and stories, like yours? What are in your opinions some do's and don'ts (be it about technicalities, gameplay or even mindset)? Thanks in advance and I apologise if this question has already been asked :)

No! You are completely fine, I appreciate the question. Very few ever ask me questions on my tumblr anyhow. I just go around giving this advice every so often when I see it asked about how to start custom hoods on the big TS2 Facebook Group or the Sims 2 Subreddit, haha! So, going into your own hood/subhoods project sounds really daunting and it's not a feat for the impatient or those that have a penchant for serial restarting playstyle. 1. Grow it organically. If that seems too loose of a perimeter for someone, they can always use a structured BACC as a springboard. One of my favorite TS2 Twitch streamers, ChocolatCitySim has built her amazing custom hood and subhoods up from a BACC. Here is an album of my hoods and subhoods showing them in 2015 and 2022 and the progress it made and even at present they look different than they did in 2022. 2. Create a solid set of sims or families you want to be the foundation population. They could be founders, you could have a headcanon of why they moved to town, or how they fit into the lore of your custom hood. These sims you will play for a long time, hopefully enough to see their children's children and such. My best advice is aim for 5-8 families and then sprinkle in some YAs (if you add a Uni right off) and single adults that are ready to mingle. Add new families and sims as you progress and as needed to grow your population. 3. Don't be afraid! Why is this important? Because Kashmire wouldn't be what it is today if I had panicked at every glitch, accident, or unintended situation that cropped up. It has actually enhanced my hood lore as the years have gone by. It makes for a unique story twist or quirk when something happens and you have to interpret or explain it away into a narrative or hood canon. Don't be afraid to start playing before the hood is 'done'; spoiler alert: a custom hood is never 'done' it might have a good few years stretch of you not updating anything in it until you need it but if you are like me and get the urge to go ham on hood deco after 14 or so years, it's gonna always be in flux! Obsessing with getting a custom hood 'done' before playing it is the quickest way to burn out and abandon your goal. Also, don't be afraid to completely chuck stuff you have downloaded or built and are not feeling anymore. Or re-arranging entire sections of your hood. In real life, civilizations grow and change and seeing that progress in your own neighborhood can be rewarding! You can even send sims you aren't feeling anymore off to another place, or make them townies, or kill them off. I've never played in strict rotation, I've lost sims to glitches, and I've bulldozed more than half my original builds to try and build or download something better.

4. Back to the building of it, I wish I had done it sooner but it's helpful to kind of know what zones of your hood are. Commercial vs Residential, vs greenspace use. Use hood deco to build up parts to make it look busier if you are going for a more urban hood or subhood but don't have a lot of playable lots yet. If you aren't a builder, download lots, there are so many good ones out there! On the same note of building, try to have your basic necessity community lots in every subhood so the sim doesn't have to travel through 2 screens to get a cup of coffee or go to a gym, but you can vary those community lots unless you want to simulate a 'chain' (a chain of restaurants, gyms, coffee shops). Then, try to also have some unique places in each subhood. Places your sims might want to go to impress a date, or dancing with friends, fill a want that comes up less often. I could wax poetic about all the different lots around Kashmire but to not exceed a response character count, I shant. 5. A subtle thing you can do is develop an identity for your different areas/subhoods. You can do this with themes, flora, deco, and even the sims that live there. 6. Let the stories come naturally and retcon what doesn't work anymore. After playing for so many years in Kashmire, stories develop in a variety of ways--most have developed through the gameplay aspect itself mixed with being inspired by lots or poseboxes or just fun scenarios I want to try to play and execute. If you don't have a stellar memory like I do (which is how I keep everything in order) document your play through notes and pics! Even just putting up little blurbs on your tumblr with a few pics can help you start a narrative and then use it to go back to reference. If not here, any blogging site, a forum, or any other place you can post will do! 7. Be choosy with your cc. Things will come along you will WANT but do you really NEED it? This is a good rule of thumb for any Sims 2 player honestly. 8. MAKE BACK UPS. CONSISTENTLY MAKE BACK UPS OF YOUR HOOD AND GAME. RELIGIOUSLY STORE THEM SOMEPLACE SAFE because your heart will break if one day your SSD melts and all your backups were on it and you don't have an amazing computer wizard husband to save your custom hood's ass. People always ask me 'How have you played the same Sims 2 neighborhood for 17 years?!' and my answer: BACK UPS. That's all I can think of off the top of my mind. Aurora Bay BACC

Meet the settlers!

I wrote this post long ago, and now I'm finally starting to play in Aurora Bay. Some things changed, I switched maps from Belladonna Cove to a custom one, put in clay hair and, most important of all, I've found +50 new aspirations mod by Lamare!

Anyway, I still post this for the history's sake :)

Amelia Broadsheet - according to wiki, there's Lincoln's daughter somewhere, I couldn't resist the urge to make her.

She's Pisces, Knowledge/Popularity, her LTW is max out 7 skills, and her hobby is film&lit. She prefers writing, of course, just like her dad, she has a way with words.

Eric Mills - Knowledge/Family (I really got a LOT of knowledge sims, which is good for a bacc I guess). He's extremely shy, and in fact, just happened to live at the Aurora Bay as a hermit. He enjoys tinkering, but his LTW is to become the head of SCIA. For reasons.

Megan Walters - she's a big outgoing girl, who dreams to become a master-chef, she's a Family/Popularity sim, and her true passion is cuisine. She made a little garden to grow ingredients for her gorgeous meals.

Jonathan Morton - He's taken his brother to Aurora Bay in search for money-making opportunities, because he wants to become top-level businessman, as a true Fortune/Knowledge sim he is.

Bruce Morton - John's brother, he doesn't care for all the business opportunities, he is a Romance/Pleasure sim, and his LTW is to woohoo w/20 different sims. Doubt that it's gonna happen, but we'll see.

Luna Meyer - Idealistic and naive, she's a Knowledge/Popularity person, she wants to become a world's best ballet dancer. Her hobby is to make flower arrangements, and she also has a cat, Charles.

Randall Wright - he's a trashbag dad of two children, a Fortune sim, who wants for 100k $ to just drop on his lazy head. His hobby is to play poker.

Piter Wright - the only responsible person in his house, Peter is a Family sim, who wants to send 3 children to college. He's the only one who takes care of Polin, and the only one who's going to have a job in the household.

Polin Wright - she's still a child, although, she's not as pinky and flowery and princessy as her dad tells her she should be.

Hey! I hope everyone’s having a great holiday season so far!

I’m still on a bit of a Simblr hiatus, which will extend all the way to January since things are gonna be pretty busy and I don’t think I’ll have time to play. If you’ve sent me a DM in the last month or commented on my posts, I will be replying to everything in the new year!

I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things and resuming my BACC... it’s been way too long and I miss it! And so I think he’d get kinda nervous when you both see less of each other and when he gets busier

You can’t talk as much because of his crazy schedule and with lack of sleep, he starts getting more irritated easier during the little intervals of time you get to see each other

At some point he might snap at you, maybe for no reason at all, and you’ll snap back indignantly

Yeah you love him but you’re not taking any attitude

If things get really bad, he just shakes his head, saying he needs some air

You’ll both give yourselves some space, but eventually Hyunjin becomes terrified that you’re too angry with him to talk again

So he goes to find you and talk

You both hug it out and decide to spent the rest of the day together for more quality time

And it’s totally worth Hyunjin getting an earful from Chan the next day

OK back to fluff quickly quickly

On the days Hyunjin goes somewhere, you sometimes join him in the car ride, tho you’re always super careful to never show your face when he gets out

The thought is enough to make you swear by all you know to always treat him like a treasure

You also make a mental note to ask him sometime

Eventually, his parents realize you have pure intentions and they become so much kinder and warmer

They let you know how welcome you are to visit whenever you want, they offer to send you off with some homemade cookies...

And Hyunjin gets so emotional at the beautiful site in front of him that he bursts into tears

Which causes you and his parents to tease and hug him

if you’re thick, let’s just be clear that im making a statement on how you should NOT judge Jinnie purely because he’s good looking, appreciate his talent!

Now, Hyunjin is kinda tall compared to the rest of SKZ hah im joking of course so it’s pure instinct to want to steal his shirts

And at some point in your life, you stop realizing ‘hey, this isn’t my jumper!’ and just walk around in clothes that aren’t yours

And when this happens, three things follow:

You see a wild Hyunjin crashing through the apartment towards you, yelling happily that ‘that’s my favorite hoodie!!’ he tries to act like he’s angry and fails in 0.0000003 sec

He doesn’t slow down and freakin slams into you at full velocity, knocking you over or off anything you might be sitting on

He proceeds to tickle you mercilessly, until you either can’t breath and turn purple or until you commit an extreme act of violence in the name of self defense

Once this chaotic episode ends, most of the time with both of you are completely knackered and just lying on the floor

You both cool off by just cuddling and watching something on TV

Or reading something together!!!

I can totally see Hyunjin shoving one of his fav books in your face and insisting that you both take turns in reading aloud to each other

And you both react at the same time to shockers in the book, like you start crying together when a character dies who hasn’t had that traumatic experience or you both squeal with joy and hug each other tighter when something great happens

I really like your new hood. What kind of visual editing are you doing? Also, what exactly are the rules of this hood? I tried looking it up with the tags, but alas, it wasn't explained fully. Is this a Zombie Apoc challenge? I'm doing a variation of the one on MTS2, but it takes place in post-War California, circa 1939, if Germans invaded the US. Please let us know your rules for this hood! Thanks! child_of_air

Oh dear, this is going to be really long, sorry. :)

1) The pic-editing. I made a Photoshop action to do that. At first, I was going to edit pics of that neighborhood in a warm, low-contrast sepia-tone. Because I like sepia-tone. So, I fiddled with an existing sepia-tone action I had (one meant for regular photographs) to make it work with Sim-pics. It does everything non-destructively, with adjustment layers, so the original image remains intact "underneath." But then I decided that I wanted SOME color but still low-contrast and matte and kind of grainy. So, on top of the sepia-toning layer group, I plopped down another copy of the original image and set a "Soft Light" layer blend with the layers below to merge it with the sepia-toning. THEN I edited a "film" Photoshop action that I had on hand to make it work better with Sim-pics, then ran THAT on the copy of the original image. Again, it works via adjustment layers, non-destructively. Then I reduced the opacity of the "film" layer group and the second copy of the original image so that the sepia-toning below merged better with the added-back color, resulting in the kind of images I've been posting.

THEN I recorded ALL of the above into a one-click Photoshop action that'll work on most Sims-pics. It'll sometimes need to be further adjusted, especially if the original image is really dark, like an outdoor nighttime pic with little or no light source, but for many pics, it's just one click.

I could share the action, if anyone would be interested in having it or fiddling with it for their own use, but it is still dependent on the other two actions that I edited. I'm not sure how to share all three together since one of the dependent actions is bundled with about a dozen others. I don't know how to extract just the one. I suppose I could just share the whole bundle, though. It's a very nice bundle that offers lots of nice effects, actually! :) I'm pretty sure it's one of the hundreds of free ones my hubby has, since he has the ones he paid for in a different folder on the networked external archive drive... Well, if anyone wants it, let me know, and I'll look into it. :)

Now as for the rules....

There really isn't a hard-and-fast set, I'm afraid. I'm kind of making things up as I go along. Initially, this was SUPPOSED to be just a neighborhood to test out some of Sun & Moon's stuff and some playing ideas prior to using those things in another neighborhood I'm developing but where I don't want to experiment. Then it kind of took on a life of its own. *laugh* It has BACC elements merged with the "backstory" of an Apocalypse that can also easily be a "pioneer" or “homesteading” kind of thing with no apocalyptic undertones. :) There are also some elements of an "integrated" playing style. In its pure form that would mean that everything has to be "built" in-hood, with nothing just appearing out of the air. I don't want to go full-on with that -- too tedious and therefore un-fun, IMO -- but I do have some supply chains. More on that further down.

Basically, it goes like this: The end of civilization was coming (Plague, nuclear war, zombies, who knows? And who cares? :) ), and only one person seemed to realize it. That one person was in college at the time. So, rather than focus on his studies so much -- After all, civilization was ending so there goes that MBA and lucrative corporate career, right? -- he focused on making as many friends as possible and convincing them that, "Hey, world's gonna end, we need to get outta Dodge and make a new world." Slowly, he gathered a group of friends -- people who lived in the dorm, a few professors, hell, even a cheerleader -- who believed him and started to make preparations. Everyone else made fun of them, of course, but who cared about that? They were all gonna die or whatever. After graduation, they left, trekking out into the wilderness with (in my imagination) enough stuff like preserved food and potable water and seeds to plant and candles to burn and shovels and saws and stuff like that, to get them by for a while.

And sure enough, they were right! Civilization collapsed. Infrastructure was destroyed or became nonfunctional. Telecommunications systems were gone even if there'd been electricity to run such devices. This group of 16 is out in the wilderness, and other survivors/escapees/whatever are wandering around, too. But the core group has a collectively-agreed-up mission to work cooperatively to make a new and better and simple-living world: Peaceful, completely egalitarian, communal, a world where money and power neither exist nor are desirable, where everyone works together, willingly, for the good of the collective, a world living in harmony with nature. (Basically, my ideal world. *laugh* I really am a communist at heart, only without the oligarchical totalitarianism that modern attempts at communism have been corrupted by.)

At first, they all lived together in one place, sleeping in quickly-built, rough cabins, doing potty business in bushes, collecting rain water for makeshift showers, and eating food that they brought, that they grew/gathered, or that they caught. All the while, they were busy putting together the "raw materials" they needed to build individual houses to live in, each dedicated to a specific function that benefits the community as a whole, the fruits of which would be shared equally with the entire community. Each time a production goal was reached, one person/couple could move off the communal "raw materials" lot and into the lot that could be "built" from the gathered raw materials. And the community grows from there.

Meanwhile, there are those other folks, wandering around alone and frightened and helpless in the wilderness, having escaped whatever the disaster was that occurred. Sometimes, members of the community meet up with them while they're out scoping out the territory. Those poor souls can be brought into the fold as well, added to the communal lot and becoming contributing members of the community.

And that's as far as the "story" goes for now. :) Bear in mind that my neighborhood is age-modded with this mod, so my Sims have PLENTY of time to live out their lives. Not sure playing this way will really work with the standard-length lifestages. You'd have to figure out ways to speed things up rather a lot, I would think or else your founders will be dead before they can even earn a house, much less reproduce and stuff. :) But anyway, the "rules," such as they are, so far:

1) No careers. No vacations. No Uni after the initial "gather your founders" part, if you do that. No subhoods at all. And no money, so if you want to you can give your households a million simoleons because it simply doesn't matter.

2) No electricity. No indoor plumbing. (I intend to add those things as they are "earned," down the line, but only at the earliest when the first born-in-game generation are adults. Haven't figure out exactly HOW it'll be earned, though.) No phones. No nannies, repair people, maids, gardeners, etc., unless you want to set up some sort of in-neighborhood system for that. (Which is certainly doable; I plan to do it later, once my supply chains are in place and I'm looking for "employment" for new people.) No vehicles except "vehicle horses." (Only once you have a horse farm!) Use candles for light sources. Use only charcoal grills for cooking. (Unless you want to download an historical-type oven, but I'm trying to run this with less CC, not more, and I want there to be some big rewards for earning electricity.) Don't use an electric fridge. (I'm using this one.) Use an outhouse, not indoor flush toilets. Use mods so that water has to be gathered to use to fill bathtubs and sinks. Stuff like that.

3) I recommend using the Visitor Controller to ban all but playable Sims from every lot. Also ban mail and newspaper delivery. You COULD make the neighborhood from empty templates and no stealth hoods, yes, but then you're going to lose the "meet people by hiking" thing, which is how "new blood" gets added to this neighborhood. That function draws from the NPC household that includes things like the BV tourists/locals and the hobby leaders and stuff like that. If you use empty templates and whatnot, you won't have that.

4) Get yer founders. I did this via sending Komei Tellerman to Uni and having him focus on making friends amongst the dormies, professors, and Uni NPCs so that all the founders would at least have a strong relationship with him, if no one else, but you could just make a bunch in CAS if you’d rather skip that part. Or if you don’t have Uni installed, of course. :)

5) Build an initial lot to dump everyone on. (I teleported them with the Sim Blender, aged them to regular adults, gave them the extra want slots they should have as college graduates, etc., since they weren’t yet playables in Uni.) Include everything they need for basic motive-filling but not much else. (You could put a working stack of books somewhere if you want them to skill, but really? With no careers, skilling isn't really all that necessary.) There will also need to be ways to make/gather raw materials. Here's the layout of the one I made, with some useful links to stuff I used on it. This lot houses the founders, any new members added to the community, and ALL born-in-game Sims once they reach teenhood, until they earn individual lots.

Note: For me, I did not want kids on this lot. They have to wait until they earn an individual lot for that. So the only place to autonomously woohoo is the park benches I used as seating for eating. But, I have ACR set so that woohoo on sofas/park benches requires privacy...which is hard to get on a lot with no real walls and a bunch of other people living on it. :) If you DO want them to have kids, then they could woohoo in the cabin-tents, but ACR doesn't enable autonomous tent-woohoo, so...yeah.

Note 2: I let the communal lot run pretty much entirely on free will, only commanding certain Sims to do certain things at certain times. That way, the residents form their own relationships and either succeed or fail at taking care of themselves. They also develop different sleep schedules, which is nice for the player, less of them to keep an eye on at any given time. :) It's also easier to NOT micromanage 16 or more Sims at once, naturally. But this, of course, would be up to the player and how you like to play.

4) Earning a lot: The communal lot has choppable trees, the mining rocks from Sun & Moon's mining set, and Nixnivis's blacksmith station on it. I have fiddled with the trees and the mining rocks to make them autonomous, and the rule is that Sims can never be commanded to chop trees or mine ore. They must decide to do that themselves, so production is limited by how industrious your Sims are. Further, the mined ore has to be "refined" (into things like nails and other things that go into a house). For this, I use the blacksmith station, just having a person make that object's basic single horseshoe object as as "stand-in." (This isn't autonomous; it's one of the things that Sims can be commanded to do.)

NOTE: I could share the edited autonomized choppable trees if someone wants to use this idea; I don't think Beck would care. But sharing the edited autonomized mining rocks would break Sun & Moon's policy, so if you want that, you'd have to do the editing yourself. It's not hard, if you can run SimPE.

In order to earn each new individual lot, the communal lot must produce 75 bundles of chopped logs and 40 horseshoes. And each horseshoe “requires” 2 buckets of ore, so you need to keep track of how many buckets of ore you have in inventories and subtract out the appropriate number of ore buckets when a batch of horseshoes is made. (Just sell them "to the air;" money doesn't matter. Much of the crafting in this hood will work the same way, too, with "prerequisite" objects that need to be produced somewhere first, so get used to the technique. *laugh*) So to get those 40 horseshoes, 80 buckets of ore have to be (autonomously!) mined first. Once you have the required materials, remove them from inventories and sell them to the air. Then, you can build an individual lot and move whoever you want to own the lot out of the communal one.

(You might want to adjust the requirements needed for how you play. For instance, if you don’t want to go pure free-will, you should probably have much higher requirements. If you don’t age-mod, then you’ll want to adjust simply because you just won’t have time to earn lots with enough time left over for your Sims to have kids to keep the neighborhood going. So, yeah. That’s certainly not set in stone; it’s just what works for my set-up.)

5) Supply chains and stuff: Before you build your first individual lot(s), you're going to want to choose what that lot will be dedicated to, because that will dictate how you build it. My list of possibilities -- so far, that is; it's ever-growing as I get new ideas and figure out how to implement them -- is as follows:

Some of those are Maxis things. Some of them are CC. Some of them don't actually exist and I'm using stand-ins instead. (Like, for instance, candle-making. Sun & Moon's beekeeping set produces beeswax as one of its end products, along with honey. They didn't yet make a candle-making station, though, so in the meantime, I'm just gonna use the robot station or something and pretend. They can make toy robots that can be one-for-one "exchanged" for functional candles, which can then be distributed. It's easy to do because money doesn't matter.) Most of them have "prerequisites." I'm not going to go into how all of these will work because I'd be here for days, but I'll give you one example of a supply chain and its prerequisites and stuff.

Let's talk about the sewing supply chain, clothing and blankets and stuff being the ultimate end-products of that supply chain. In order to have new clothing and towels and quilts/blankets and other nice decorative things like that, first, at the very bottom of the "pyramid," you gotta have someone who'll grow hay. Because you can't have sheep (and other livestock) without something to feed them. And you can't have wool without sheep. (Or growing cotton or flax for linen or making silk or something, and if I can figure out how to make THAT happen, I will. I have an idea brewing for marijuana -- think hemp -- but for now...sheep.) And you can't knit a sweater or produce fabric without cleaning and spinning that wool into yarn/usable fiber/thread. And you can't have fabric without someone with a loom to weave it. And you can't have leather (for shoes and stuff) without someone killing some kind of animal (domesticated or hunting wild ones) and tanning the hides. ONLY THEN can you have someone making new clothing. And at each step, there's a kind of conversion. Like "1 spun basket of wool = enough yarn to make 1 sweater." So, you sell the basket of wool (obtained from the sheep farmer) to the air, then "spin" (via a CC spinning wheel plus an invisible sewing machine to make a few potholders or something as a "stand-in" for the process), then you sell those potholders to the air and use Beck's knitting ball to make one piece of clothing which can then be distributed and used to "buy" one sweater or whatever.

That's how everything basically works in a supply chain, some of which have more steps than others. Producing new clothing would be the longest one I've come up with so far. So, when building your lots, if you want to use supply chains at all, you must start out with the "anchors" of the supply chains you want to have. If you don't want to be that complicated, you could just pick randomly or pick whatever appeals to you.

6) Individual lots: Plop down a lot. On that lot, build a house but leave room outside for the lot's function plus the outhouse, the outdoor fridge, a well/water pump and a garden. (Eventually gardens can go away, once you have enough food-producers that can consistently produce enough to distribute amongst the population. But until then, folks will need to grow stuff.) The size of your lots is gonna depend on you and how you play. Me, I like smaller lots and I don't mind cramming large families into small houses...which suits a "pioneer" sort of lifestyle, anyway. So, my individual lots are no bigger than 3x3, and the house itself (they're all the same, just different colors, different furnishings, and oriented differently on the lot), for a child-producing household, is a 9x9 square with a 3-tile deep front porch across the front. Floor plan here.

7) Unlike a BACC where CAS Sims are “earned” by certain events, any new, non-born-in-game Sims have to be met via hiking. (It’s one of the possible outcomes of hiking.) It’s a substitute for being out “exploring” or “looking for wandering domesticate livestock to capture” or whatever. If a non-pet “someone” is met, that person gets added to the communal lot, joining the “queue” for an individual lot. (I just use the Sim Blender to teleport them into the communal lot and add them to the household.) I prefer to age up any children to teen and age down any elders to adults, but that’s up to you, of course.

Annnnnnd that's about it, really. I have yet to figure out exactly how the "economy" is going to run. At the moment, the individual lots are still producing stuff with not enough to distribute yet and I don't have any full supply chains yet...but I need to figure it all out soon. This was so important for me, for other kids watching, and for character development. Props to Andi Mack for continuing to be a wonderful step forward in children’s television. 1. Do you prefer to play the premade hoods or your own?

I like to do a mixure! Right now I’m playing a custom BACC and a mashup of Pleasantview and Strangetown, so I'm getting the best of both worlds. :)

2. Do you have a sim or a hood that you really love playing?

In my current gameplay, I absolutely love Nysa Wilde in my New Rosewick BACC. She's super cute and a lot of fun to play and I'm excited to see what her kids look like. I love alien sims though, so I might be slightly biased in that regard.

3. What kind of sim God are you? Do you like to control everything or do you let your sims follow their free will?

I definitely control everything. That's why I'm starting an ISBI in my BACC. It's gonna be so hard not to micromanage all of the Sims, but it will also be interesting to see what kind of stuff the uncontrollables get up to.

4. When did you start playing sims?

In the early 2000s. I don't remember exactly when. My dad got a copy of SimCity 2000 from a coworker and there was an ad for the original Sims game. My parents bought me the Sims Complete Collection at Costco a year-ish later, and then I bought myself the Sims 2 in my seventh grade year (so probably end of 2006), and I've been hooked ever since. TS2 is still my favorite version of the game though and I'll always play it. <3

5. How much CC do you have in your downloads folder?

As of right now, 869 MB. I'm trying to play without using build and buy mode CC, so that's all defaults and mods.

6. Is there a simblr you really admire?

Oh my gosh, there are so many. But my current favorite is @simprising because I love how she plays a completely CC-free game (she was the one who inspired me to go CC-free in my own games). And her sims are just adorable!

7. Do you follow other blogs/forums about sims outside of tumblr?

I do! I have an account on Boolprop (clicky!) and post links to my tags on there so that more people can see my stuff. I don't get comments on my posts though, so that's kinda unfortunate. I don't like double posting when I have something new to post, but if no one comments, I can't help it...

8. Do you enjoy reading other people’s legacies? Do you have a favorite?

I love reading other people's stories! I have so many favorites that I don't even know what to do with myself, but my top three are @simprising ‘sMoody legacy, @laenyrie‘s Covington legacy, and @lilsimsie's Huntley legacy.

9. Do you send your sims on vacations?

Not as often as my sims would like! I play on a laptop that gets a bit laggy on big lots, so I don't like to visit the vacation 'hoods often. I'm also too lazy to go through and makeover all the lots. XD

10. Have you ever gotten emotional over a sim’s death?

Not emotional as in crying, but I did have a mini-panic attack once because Mary Sue and her mom both died in a fire while Lilith was at work once. I just kinda watched it happen because I was in shock. Poor Lilith came home and her mom and grandma were dead. And the fire was still going a little bit, too! Now I make sure and add fire alarms to all houses.

My BACC Rules

Since @mackieblr asked and I’m not sure when I’ll be getting back to it, here’s what I’ve come up so far! It’s mostly inspired by @nepherists2-blog and @didilysims rulesets (I outright copy-pasted some part from theirs, actually, since it was originally just gonna be for my own eyes, haha.) A lot of it is quite vague in places so feel free to ask for clarification.

The main way mine differs from some is that it doesn’t use any lot-points, CAS points or sim multipliers, because I suck at keeping track of stuff like that! If I play one I plan on just adding sims when it suits me.

Also most of the “entertainment-y” careers take place in Downtown/The City. I don’t like how those seem to take place in lots of different unspecified locations so it makes sense to me that they happen in a bigger city. I included business here too since it seems weird to have a “business” career track when there are loads of player-run businesses. Same goes for culinary, I don’t like the idea of having it linked in to creating a player-run restaurant since they wouldn't be working at that restaurant, per-se.

So, that said, here’s my (very beta and poorly formatted) ruleset:

Starting Out

Start with a group of 8 single adult sims. They begin on a campsite or similar small settlement so that they can all get to know each other.

The Mayor: must be on the Politics career track, responsible for managing town funds

The Journalist: must be on the Journalism career track

The Architect: must be on the Architecture career track. it takes 5 “go to works” from the campsite to build a starter home.

The Mechanic: sim responsible for unlocking electricity & plumbing, but can then enter whatever career they fancy/is available

The Farmer: sim responsible for food supply and opening first grocery store

The Medic: must be on the Medicine career track. sim must learn how to make grandma’s comfort soup and can open a clinic that serves it. must study physiology

The Security: must be on the law enforcement career track

The Entertainer: sim responsible for opening first “entertainment” lot, most likely a bar or games site

General Restrictions

Electricity: (excepting phones) unlocked when The Mechanic reaches level 10 mechanical. Build a deco power station to celebrate this.

Plumbing: (must use out-houses) unlocked when The Mechanic reaches level 10 mechanical. Build a deco water tower to celebrate this.

Newspapers: unlocked when a Publishing House is built by The Journalist.

Cars: unlocked when a Petrol Station and/or Car Dealership is built.

Building: sims can comission a building by buying a draft from The Architect. Building restrictions are lifted completely when a Construction Company is opened.

Townies: unlocked when your architect has a construction company (career level 4) to build houses for them.

University: can be created once your mayor reaches level 5 in Politics and spends §500,000 to fund creation of the university. Can be a Maxis University or a custom one.

Downtown: can be created once your mayor reaches level 5 in Politics and spends §500,000 for transportation between the two locations. This can be the Maxis Downtown or a custom one.

Vacation Destination: can be created once your mayor reaches level 5 in Politics and spends §500,000 to build an airport.

Service Restrictions

Adoption: unlocked when an orphanage is built, or with a downtown connection

Pet adoption: unlocked when an animal shelter is built, or with a downtown connection

Grocery delivery: unlocked when the grocery store owner purchases a van (either the Landwhale or a custom delivery van). Cars must be unlocked first.

Pizza and Chinese food delivery: unlocked with an owned take-out place whose owner has a Smooga Mini. Cars must first be unlocked. (Pizza place/Chinese restaurant/take-out place is allowed to open without cars being unlocked, but no delivery is allowed until the owner has a car.)

Police: unlocked when a sim in law enforcement opens a police station (unlocks burglar alarm)

Fire service: unlocked when a sim who has studied fire safety opens a fire department, after there have been at least 5 fires (fire alarms also unlocked)

Garden club: unlocked when five Sims simultaneously have a gardening badge, with at least one of them having a gold badge. Also unlocks buyable fertilizer. Requires townies.

Other services may be unlocked with NPC Careers, if I add them. Otherwise, they’re added when a City Connection is added!

Career Restrictions

Basics

These are unlocked for one sim from the beginning. Once a specialist building is built, further promotions are unlocked and the job is open to the general public.

Politics: Unlocked for The Mayor. Opens for all when a Town Hall is built, unlocking promotions beyond City Council Member.

Law Enforcement: Unlocked for The Security. Opens for all when a Police Station is built, unlocking promotions beyond Desk Sergeant.

Medicine: Unlocked for The Medic. Opens for all (with a biology degree or who has studied physiology) when a Hospital is built, unlocking promotions beyond General Practioner.

Architecture: Unlocked for The Architect. Opens for all when Construction Firm is built, unlocking promotions beyond Head of Construction Company.

Journalism: Unlocked for The Journalist. Opens for all when Publishing House is built, unlocking promotions beyond Magazine Editor.

Extended

These are unlocked when certain conditions are met.

Criminal: Position opens for a sim who befriends a burglar. Unlocked for all when this sim builds a Criminal Warehouse. Promotion to Getaway Driver is blocked until cars are unlocked.

Education: Unlocked when first sim hits childhood. A school must be built as soon as the career is opened. High School Teacher is locked until first teen, and Guest Lecturer is locked until University is unlocked.

Paranormal: A single position opens whenever an alien abduction takes place, a sim is resurrected, death gets cheated, or a supernatural is created. Unlocked for all when a sim tops the career ladder and builds a Cult HQ.

Law: One position opens to any Sim who has studied couples counselling and has opened a legal office (can be a home business). Unlocked for all when sim reaches the top of the career ladder and opens a large public Law Firm.

Firefighter: A position opens for a sim who has studied fire safety after there have been at least 5 fires. A Fire Station must be opened in order for this career to be played. Sims on this career must follow a special ruleset.

Science: Unlocked to all graduates with a degree in Physics, Biology or Psychology when a Laboratory is built.

Natural Science: Unlocked for all graduates with a Biology degree when Laboratory gets a Natural Science wing.

Oceanography: Unlocked for all graduates with a Biology degree when Laboratory gets an Oceanography wing.

Adventurer: Unlocked for all when a Vacation Destination is added.

Military: Unlocked for when Military Base subhood is added. Sims must live at the Military Base and follow a special ruleset.

Intelligence: Once the Law Enforcement and Criminal careers are unlocked to all, this career is unlocked to any Sim who owns a telescope—bonus points if the Sim wears sunglasses— and opens a detective’s office (can be a home business). Unlocked for all when sim reaches the top of the career ladder and builds an Intelligence Wing at Military Base.

City Careers

These careers require a sim to seek their fortune in the big city, so Downtown must be unlocked first. While the city always needs more minimum wage workers and businessmen, Sims must meet certain requirements to be able to score a job in a performance industry. Alternatively, if a sim is “scouted” for a career (offered it by a Downtownie as part of the reputation system) they can enter regardless of their qualification.

Business: open to all

Slacker: open to all

Artist: requires maximum Arts and Crafts Enthusiasm.

Culinary: requires maximum Cuisine Enthusiasm.

Athletic: requires maximum Sports Enthusiasm.

Gamer: requires maximum Games Enthusiasm.

Music: requires maximum Music and Dance Enthusiasm.

Dance: requires maximum Music and Dance Enthusiasm.

Show Business: requires maximum Film and Literature Enthusiasm.

Entertainment: requires maximum Film and Literature Enthusiasm.

Pet Careers

Pets must have jobs matching their owners. Hpowever, if the owner of a pet retires or loses their job, the pet can still continue to work in their career.

Security (Pets): Open to pets whose owners are employed in Law Enforcement.

Service (Pets): Open to pets whose owners are employed in Medicine or Fire Service.

Show biz (Pets): Open to pets whose owners are employed in Show Business.

Taxes

Households are divided into tiers based on their total funds (check from neighbourhood screen):

Upper Class (net worth $100,000+)

Middle Class (net worth $50,000-$99,000)

Lower Class (net worth $25,000-$49,000)

Poverty (net worth below $25,000)

Each tier earns the city tax per week based on the number of sims in that household:

Upper Class: 1.000$/Sim

Middle Class: 500$/Sim

Lower Class: 250$/Sim

Poverty: 100$/Sim

Taxes are paid on the first day of the week, directly to the Founder, who manages the town’s funds. Use Pescado’s money order to send the correct amount to the Founder. The Founder’s income and the taxes come together into one big pool, and it will be up to them to decide whether to advance the town or build themselves a nice heated indoors swimming pool.

Which is your favorite Sims Expansion?

HARD QUESTION IS HARD! I guess it depends on the series tbh. For TS2 I’m always torn between Season’s and Apartment Life. Season’s was just revolutionary to me! The way the lighting changed per season and each season had a special perk? I was floored! Autumn wooed me with those golden tones ugh man! And getting to garden! But idk Apartment Life really did something for me - even tho I don’t play apartments as often as I’d like to! (That said maybe Free Time should be the other fave…….. Or OfB…. SEE HOW HARD THIS IS?

TS3 tho? Generations, hands down! Tho it’s tied for me with Uni and Island Paradise. But then again…… Supernatural………. and Seasons…… GAH!!!! I’m gonna say Generations, Seasons, and Uni. Generations just blew everything away for me. I love LOVE the teen age so having cute little things like prom and teen parties was the COOLEST and I’m desperately hoping we get something similar on TS4 cos it just adds SO MUCH dimension to the game!

As far as TS4 goes, for now it’s City Living and Get Together, which is like, 2/3 of their releases I know. But I feel like TS4 does so much more throwing out Game Packs and SPs as well that it’s almost hard to weigh these. That said, I’m a sucker for any city life and TS4 leaves me YEARNING for proper city living in my own real life. San Myshuno is gorgeous, I love the festivals, I love the apartment elements, everything is so cool to me! Get Together is similar! Windenburg is THE PERFECT aesthetic, all the new items are gorgeous, the new locations and clubs and alfjjfkafkjafj I just really love it!!!!!

What is your favorite thing about the Sims?

No matter the incarnation for me it all comes down to raising little families and worlds. I used to do a lot of perfect play and I still struggle to break myself away from being ultra controlling of my little pixel people. Mostly, I just love creating them and letting them live - make families or destroy them or forsake them all together. Businesses and trying to achieve their LTWs and climb to the top of the ladder. Especially now that I do BACC’s and round robin hood plays in TS2, I love seeing how families grow, who befriends who, how things are related. Like, in my hood Starryfay it was just crazy, seeing who fell in love with who and who wanted to kill the others lmao. I like their little lives, man.

What is your least favorite thing about the Sims?

For TS2, it’s just a matter of, you know, being dated. I wish we had tools like S4S that made creating recolors far less tedious. I wish it was easier to decorate as it is in TS4, too, lmao. I hate decorating in TS2 cos TO THIS DAY I’ve yet to really mess around with/figure out OMSPs and stuff lmaoooooo

I think with TS4 it’s the fact that we have so few traits - and I know there’s mods for that which I intend to definitely get and mess with some time, but it DOES make my sims feel a little more…. one dimensional I guess? Also lack of things like ACR and even the fact that in my experience there isn’t as much negative matters? Does that make sense? Like, with TS2 your sims can hate each other without you interfering too much but in TS4 I feel like I have to FORCE that?

CuriousB's desert terrain works for me, so I don't think it's the chipset.

Hmmm...Well, I had a look at the uploaded file, and it appears to be the right one. :\ I have no idea what’s going on. Give me a day or two and I’ll make a new file and maybe also make a high-res one, and then you can see if one or the other will work...

Sure! I still haven’t installed the game, but I probably will this weekend since we have no plans and it’s too darn hot around here to do much of anything outside. Maybe send me an ask or whatever with tips?

I both want this and also would be scared about what would happen if I put this on a commercial lot in my story hood. I have the original, but honestly I think I only used it once, in a Bacc household full of romance sims because I had a rule against TV and well, what else would they do on their days off?

HAH! Sex is better than TV by a mile, so... :) Anyway, the advertising on the thing is set so that if you use this on a community lot Sims don’t get overly obsessed with it so long as there are other fun things of equally-strong advertising around. That’s how I wanted it to be because it’s basically going to be an avenue for Sims to meet people in this wacko neighborhood, but I do want them to do other things when they’re on the lot where this will be, too.

But yeah, I suppose it has the potential to screw up stories. But it also might give you ideas, too. If you keep the characters for whom you have planned storylines away, others in the population might do interesting things to spark some ideas.

Heathen! Nah, I kid. I know he’s an acquired taste. You have to like Romance Sims, and a lot of players seem to not like Romance Sims. You also have to like Sims who aren’t conventionally beautiful. I like Romance Sims (They’re my faves, actually), and I like “ugly” but not deformed-looking Sims. So he’s totally win-win for me! :) I do change his outfit, though, because that pixel-man has very questionable fashion sense. :)

I also like Ben Long a lot, but he’s a Knowledge Sim and I find them rather boring in general, so when I play him, I have to do terrible things to him to make him interesting. :)

Never tried it myself, though from what little I've seen, it looks like something I could get interested in. All friends who have played it said Civ IV was better though. :P

I still haven’t installed it because there’s stuff for TS2 that I want to get done, and I know I’ll get distracted. But I’m really looking forward to trying it out. And as for the version...Well, Civ V is what was there at the shop. :) And for $5, even if I ultimately don’t like it it’s not like I’m really out much.

could be they have graphics chipsets that are defaulting to the maxis terrain due to inability to store it effectively in the graphics memory?

Apparently not in Jellybeanery’s case. :\ I’m still at a loss. If you’ve got any ideas about what else it might be, I’m all ears. Or eyes, as the case may be. :)

The light from the red district? :) No, you’re probably right, but...Geez, what color is the sun supposed to be in SimWorld? :)

Wow this is fabulous! So many objects that need to be recloned, but so worth it!

Yeah, there’s a lot of Maxis stuff that’s used outdoors that ought to be neighborhood-visible but isn’t. Especially when it comes to outdoor-type seating. And I don’t think the telescopes are neighborhood-visible, either, now that I think about it. Once you get used to doing it, though, it goes quickly.

usually they cry for sims they have memories of. like if the dead sim taught them to walk/talk, i've seen before that they cry sometimes even if theres no blood relation.

I’ve never seen that happen in my game. In this case, I know Steven taught Will to talk, at least. But, no mourning from him. Now I’m wondering if I’ve got a mod that’s interfering. Hmmm.....

A lot of Disney is overrated. Emperor's New Groove? Seriously underrated. But I got The Aristocats for my birthday as a kid and watched it probably 100 times at least, so it's near and dear to my heart.

I really don’t know why I never saw The Aristocats. I mean, I was a kid when it was made and all, but I only ever saw the older Disney movies from the 40s or so. (Fantasia is another favorite.) I saw the later Disney movies from the 90s and 2000s because I had kids then, so we saw them in the theater, and I got them when they came out on video, and they watched them ad nauseum. (And The Lion King is one of Ethan’s favorite movies; it resonates with him because he lost his dad at an age when he really needed one. So, we watch that one a lot and I bristle because of all the hyena maligning.) But I don’t think I’ve seen any Disney movie from the 70s in its entirety,

Now as for Emperor’s New Groove: I will argue (and HAVE argued) that it’s the best buddy movie ever made. Kronk and Eartha Kitt’s scenery-chewing (She did it SO well, always did) is just bonus.

Thank you so much for this, I might give it a go tonight! I surrounded my campsite with nengi's bigger bourgainvillas and it's been driving me crazy that they are invisible from any other lot ^__^

Good luck with it! I thought those bougainvilleas were already neighborhood-visible, though...Or maybe I made them so. I don’t remember... Anyway, let me know if you have any trouble!

What is this Enterprise show you mention? I am sure it does not exist.

I dunno, I heard a rumor about it. Something about a prequel sort of thing, only done way after the other shows were produced. Seems like kind of a dumb idea...

(Seriously, I really wanted to like Enterprise. I really, really like Scott Bakula. Quantum Leap is one of my favorite shows. And while I enjoyed a few of the episodes, the writers just didn’t seem to know what to do with any of the characters, especially the poor helmsman dude, which is sad because he was a very pretty black man. I mean, I don’t even remember his name... And of course they had to sex up the female Vulcan. *sigh* They get points for destroying Florida, though. No, I’m kidding. Well, sort of...)
