Just a heads up that I might be out of commission for a while. I've managed to injure myself as a result of being sick, so my pain levels are at max. It's difficult to do much of anything comfortably, so being on my laptop is not high on my list of priorities. I'll try my best to work on some projects if I'm able, but in the meantime, I need to rest and heal.

DON鈥橳 FORGET ABOUT VCU
Richmond police assaulted peaceful students at VCU on Monday April 29th, 2024. The students were granted permission by the university to protest. The protest officially started at 5PM EST outside of the Cabell Library, but several students started as early as 8 AM. They called it the Palestine Liberation Zone. Hundreds of VCU students attended.

The protesters' list of demands from VCU. They were not going to leave until the University acquiesced.
At 8:30 PM EST, Richmond police arrived at the protest in full riot gear. The pallets you see were brought in by the students to protect the tents, and themselves, from police. The University called in the police.

At 9PM, the police were armed with riot shields and formed a wall against the students. Students used pallets, signs, and themselves to press back against officers. Some flung empty water bottles against them. One of the officers used pepper spray against the students. You can see several students in the windows in the library.

RPD are claiming that they did not use tear gas.
The police retreated and the students heckle and cheer in victory.

By 9:12 PM, the students were locked inside the library and their dorms by police in fear that they would join their fellow students. Here is a video from a student's POV inside of the Cabell Library.

Sanitation workers take away tents and anything that was left behind. Laptops, books and other school materials were thrown away in a dumpster or were destroyed. Several students say that officers were snacking on the food that was left behind.
Tumblr media
Past midnight, the organizers told the students to go home. The students in the library were let go after 4 hours of being stuck there. 13 arrests were made.
This is the University's response:

Is VCU providing safety to students in the form of riot police, pepper spray and tear gas? Almost all of the protesters were students of VCU, with maybe a handful of non-students joining in, according to a student who attends there. If the campus did not want disruption, they should not have given the green light to students protesting peacefully against genocide.
Here are several videos of the students being 'violent'

Contrary to popular belief, stuffed toys were not invented by or for Teddy Roosevelt in the 1900s. They existed before this, in different forms, for almost all of human history. However, well, toys get loved to death and are often buried with their people if they died young, or even in old age - or are so well-worn that the only surviving bits are the wooden or bone framing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The above dolls have stuffed and padded elements to their bodies, and survive from the middle ages, apparently. There's no dates attached, but they are absolutely beautiful examples.
Tumblr media
We cannot forget ragdolls, which were obviously popular, and definitely betray my example a bit too well, into the "this is a bit scary" realm. But these were toys, and they were loved dearly by their owners. We have to remain respectful of that.
The first commercial stuffed toy was apparently a stuffed elephant in 1880 intended as a pincushion, but often purchased as a toy for children. They also made others, such as the lion below:
Tumblr media
The next was a cat that is still a popular pattern today for toys - the Ithaca Kitty. Here are some replicas:

I've definitely seen a ton of these used as pillows to this day.
So, if you are writing or depicting history, don't be afraid of giving your kids a stuffed friend to love. They did exist before you think, and were much more popular than you would believe. They just often were not commercial, and were handmade by loved ones, or sold in small quantities, individually crafted by one talented artist.

The Barkley Marathons just had its first female finisher ever.
If you do not know what the Barkley Marathons is, then it is time you learn, because it is not just an ultra running race, it is INSANE.
But I'm so happy. They said it was getting less and less likely any woman would ever finish it (it gets harder each year), but now Jasmin Paris has done it.
Here are some things that make the Barkley Marathons unique:
The length is unknown. It's at least 100 miles, but who knows? Not even the participants, because they're not allowed GPS-trackers. There are five loops in total.
They're allowed map and compass. That's it. No GPS watches.
On every loop, they have to find about a dozen books, tear out a page that matches their bib number and bring them all back, or they don't get to continue onto the next loop.
There are only 40 people participating every year.
How to apply? I don't know. Most people don't. It's a secret to everybody actually.
The race fee is super low, but you have to bring a license plate and give to the race director as part of your registration
They don't get to know exactly when the race starts. The race director will blow a conch during a 12h window and then it's an hour until the start. Instead of a starting gun, he'll light his cigarette, and then the race is off.
The max amount of time is 60h, which doesn't give you time to complete the five loops and also catch some sleep in between loops.
It's been going for almost 40 years, and up until the 2024 edition, ONLY 17 people had finished EVER. That's how hard it is. Most years, no one finishes at all.
This year, there were five finishers, and like I said, for the first time, a woman finished. It's really impressive.
