52. Marriage of Convenience 94. Hair Brushing/Braiding

Is it bad that my first thought is actually inspired by the Ob*kin fic Their fragrance came from you? There's a whole thing about Tatooine marriage braids that my mind immediately jumps to lmao

I think... let's say modern AU. Anakin is a single dad, has been for a few years. Padme died in childbirth, and while her will was made out in favor of Anakin and the kids, the executor of her will was her lawyer-mentor, Palpatine, who couldn't touch the trust funds set up for the twins (which are very large, and will become available when they turn 25, but can only be accessed for education costs before then), but did manage to somehow take almost all the liquid assets left for Anakin in bogus fees.

Anakin's still got the house, but as time passes, he's having more and more trouble with paying the property taxes. He's still managing, but the money Padme left for him is slowly dwindling, and the kids are going to start costing more as they get older, and he's already got Ahsoka living with him (she helps out with the kids so he can work, coding from home, since he's paying for her college tuition; she doesn't have to pay rent since she's a commuter student, and she's got a partial scholarship, but that's still a few thousand a year coming out of Anakin's pocket to put his little sister through underrad). Obi-Wan offered to help, but Obi-Wan lives on the other side of town and even tenured professors don't earn that much, compared to Coruscant's standard cost of living, especially since Obi-Wan adopted recently, a little girl called Reva, and--

Anakin's struggling financially, basically, which isn't a new circumstance, but he really doesn't want to lose Padme's house. Worst comes to worst, he can probably sell it back to Sola so it stays in the Naberrie family, and she'll let him keep living there, but... that's not a sure bet. The Naberries are comfortably wealthy, but it's still an entire house.

Rex, a college friend of Anakin's that went to the same aerospace program, comes back to town. He was on a military tour overseas, but got honorably discharged due to a head injury. Anakin offers to let hm sleep in the guest room, since Padme's house (it's still Padme's, in Anakin's mind), is a lot bigger than Cody's apartment, even if there are toddlers at large. Rex initially promises that he'll only stay long enough to find an apartment of his own, except he overhears Anakin on the phone with Obi-Wan about the finance stuff one day, and reaches out to a few people who have been in town more consistently for a better idea of what's going on without getting too deep into Anakin's business.

Rex manages to get a job locally; there's an airfield for hobbyists a few miles out of town, and the place is looking to hire a new engineer on staff to do repairs and checks on the small planes they keep on site. He starts making noises about moving out, and then, 'subtly,' suggests he just stay at Anakin's place and pay rent.

Anakin does not like the idea of Rex paying rent; friends don't do that! Anakin isn't going to make Rex pay rent in Anakin's home.

They don't talk about it for a few days, and then there's... IDK a night 'off,' where Obi-Wan or Sola or Aayla or Beru takes the twins for an evening, and Ahsoka goes out with friends, so Anakin can take some time off from being a Dad and just Relax.

He and Rex break out the wine, get tipsy not truly drunk, and Rex pokes at the 'just stay here' option again. The house is closer to the airfield than most apartments, and Rex can help take some of the weight off of Anakin and Ahsoka's shoulders with regards to childcare! Even if Anakin won't accept him paying rent!

Anakin argues this. Anakin's kids aren't Rex's responsibility, and Anakin doesn't need his charity (which is, of course, how he views Rex's suggestion). They go back and forth on the topic a few times, and then Rex throws out something about getting married 'for lower taxes' and 'it's not rent if it's my house too, right?' and it's. It's a joke.

Except they're both still thinking about it the next morning, with faint (but not faint enough) memories of a tipsy kiss before bed, and--

Months pass with the two of them circling around each other and Rex never quite moves out, and tax season rolls around, and Anakin is stretched so thin, even with all the cuts for children and covering a dependent's tuition and so on.

Rex quietly floats the idea of a convenience marriage again. It doesn't have to mean anything, if Anakin doesn't want it to. It's not an insult to Padme's memory, just a way of keeping her children in the house she chose for them. And it's not charity, because Rex will get tax cuts too, and better health insurance once Anakin can put him on the family plan he's got. It won't do anything for this year, but by the time the next year rolls around, Anakin will have less of a problem paying those taxes, even if that promotion he's been hoping for doesn't come through.

Anakin, eventually, agrees.

Just four months later, they tie the knot. It's a small ceremony, more than just a courthouse and a paper, just to... well, Anakin wants Rex to have this. Leia and Luke don't entirely understand what's going on, but Ahsoka told them that it means Rex is going to be staying for a lot longer than they originally planned, and they're pretty excited about that part. They're four, and 'Daddy's friend that we like a lot is staying' is pretty clear.

They don't have a 'traditional' wedding night, because they're still both looking at this as a platonic thing (it won't stay that way, but it still is for now). They do share a bed, because someone is sleeping in their guest room (IDK who, maybe a guest was too drunk post-wedding to get home and they just offered the room). Anakin's hair is long enough for an evening of people and, importantly, sticky toddler hands to have tangled it. He washes it out, comes to the bed, and looks so tired--because he had to wash the toddlers first--that Rex offers to brush it for him.

It's intimate. Gentlemanly, but intimate. They go to bed with warm cheeks and pounding hearts, and eventually, one of them rolls onto their side to cuddle.

Neither of them get much sleep that night.

What would you say to people who think padawans are child soldiers trained for war ?

What other blogs (and I) have already said a bunch of times - that based on Lucas' canon (6 movies + TCW):

1) Jedi training was more focused on diplomacy and such before the war than it was on combat prowess, and you can see evidence of that in Ahsoka's ability to teach a course on politics to a bunch of Mandalorian kids who are her age or older and who are receiving what looks like top education (the Duchess' nephew/adopted son is one of them so it's clearly a good school) or in Obi-Wan's duties with Qui-Gon. Sure, they're ready to pull out the lightsabers at the drop of a hat, but they're both ambassadors, and they spend a lot of the movie trying to impress on people that they're really not meant to be soldiers. What they really do is protect Padmé and give her leverage with their involvement, but she's the one who has to ultimately confront the Trade Federation and force them to comply. There hadn't been a galactic-wide war in like a thousand year, ergo Jedi training was not tailored for war for about a thousand year. If anything, Geonosis showed the Padawans and the Knights and the Masters were absolutely not trained for war.

2) That even during the war, the grown-up Jedi are evidently doing their absolute best to take care of the Padawans. They pull Ahsoka from the front when she makes bad decisions (the Lightsaber Lost episode) and it's not like all the Masters we know about wouldn't immediately jump in front of a blaster bolt for their Padawans (which is what Depa or Jaro DO end up doing for their apprentices, btw). It's not like they could just leave all the teens at home (they likely would have all sneaked out to go fight along with the other Jedi anyway lmao) when there aren't enough Masters or Knights around in the Temple to protect them there either. It's not like they could just leave the Padawans in untrained limbo for the duration of the war - when training in the Force is crucial at formative ages. (Also, we actually do see younglings who are old enough to be Padawans but aren't fighting: the kids who got kidnapped and hunted for sport by Trandoshans. Meaning that a) the Padawans going to war really isn't a matter of the Jedi being happy to throw their kids at the enemy, or they'd have sent O-mer, Jinx and Kalifa too - it's a matter of students accompanying their teachers, because really what else are they gonna do? and b) that Force-sensitive kids are never safe from the perils of the war even if they don't fight in it - so again, might as well keep them within sight)

3) That if you make the argument that the Jedi use child soldiers, then Naboo and Alderaan are on the exact same level. But it's a really bad faith argument to pretend that Padmé's position in TPM was the movie wanting us to see the Naboo government as a messed up child soldier situation, or that Bail and Breha were irresponsible for allowing Leia to join the Rebellion at age 15. And if people agree to be consistent on that one (again, as silly as it is to condemn either the Organas or the Naberries) then the Jedi are by far the more responsible and healthy system. Padawans have the supernatural abilities to outsmart, outrun or outfight a lot of potential threats, including trained warriors or droids. They are not like kids from the rest of the Galaxy, nevermind like kids from the real world.

4) That Padawans fighting in the war wasn't really something we saw in the movies (except on Geonosis, but again they're woefully unprepared for it and they didn't expect that level of aggression on Dooku and the Seps' part). It was the product of the out-of-universe reasoning that if you're going to animate and produce shows for kids, they're going to wanna see kids. My younger brothers and cousins's favorite episodes are probably the younglings eps, because duh.

Ultimately, it all comes down to whether or not people are criticizing the worldbuilding (they can dismiss my first three arguments as not good enough and continue to think the Padawans' situation is messed up, it's totally fair) or are saying that the story itself was condemning the Jedi for 'using child soldiers', in which case I think it's completely unsupported by anything in the movies, shows, or behind-the-scene comments.

No but seriously I cannot get the idea of the clones as space cowboys out of my head.

So here's an idea I have to continue the saga of Cal Kestis and the clones.

After the clone wars end, the nightmare doesn't fully end for the clones. They don't have any rights, they're not considered citizens, they only have each other as a people, and public opinion of them isn't very high.

Mandalore doesn't want them. They're not welcome on many planets, despite the clones giving everything to protect them.

Sure Palpatine is dead, order 66 has been stopped in its tracks. And the jedi order, while dealing with horrendous public opinion, still stands.

But then there's the Koboh system, largely unexplored and uninhabited except by a few prospectors and raiders. As long as you contribute, you're welcome there.

So what do many clones do? They move to Koboh.

Obi-Wan and Cody take Cal (12 years old at that point) and bring him to Koboh. Several members of the 212th like Waxer, Boil, and Wooley went with them. Along with the bad batch (hunter, crosshair, tech, wrecker, echo, and 12 year old Omega), Fives (because he's not leaving his Podtwin Echo), Jango & Boba Fett, Bly & Aayla Secura, Shaak Ti and several cadets of varying ages, Plo Koon and his wolf pack, Commander Mayday, and Greez Dritus.

Together with Doma they build the Ramblers Reach outpost to a lively little town where the community thrives.

Meanwhile Fox escapes to Alderaan with his corrie brothers. And he gets to live out his life with the Organas and their adopted daughter, who calls Fox buir.

Rex lives his life on Naboo, aiding Padmé in the fight for clone rights in the senate and setting up a system where he finds suitable planets for his vods to inhabit.

Anakin and Padmé are still married, they live on Naboo with the twins, Luke & Leia, and with Ahsoka. Who is adopted into the family as Anakin's little sister. Anakin never goes Darkside.

Meanwhile Cal, Boba, and Omega live out there best lives on Koboh creating mayhem and being around so many of their bavodu'e. The sheer chaos these three can create is known planet wide.

Obi-Wan and Cody enjoy their married life. Cody, along with several ex commanders and Crosshair have taken the responsibility of town protection on them.

Hunter hunts with Mosey when he can.

Wrecker watches the gremlin triplets, which doesn't really work because they rope him into things. But it's still better than when Fives watches them. We do not talk about the Rancor incident.

Bly & Aayla marry and have a few children of their own.

And that's what I have for now..it's almost 2 am, I need sleep.

Romance: While Ahsoka experiences various connections throughout TCW, the most notable is with Lux. However, this romance primarily serves as a vehicle for her character development. Lux provides her with insights into the Separatists' perspective on the war and later the Death Watch. While Ahsoka does express interest in him, it's not in a deeply romantic sense. Leia Organa

Character: Leia, our first main character introduction, immediately captivates with her compelling beginning. She's taken captive but never succumbs to fear, displaying strength and resolve. Her resilience shines through as she becomes one of the Rebellion's leaders, commanding respect from all quarters. She remains unyielding in her role, displaying a fiery temperament and quick wit reminiscent of her father, while proving to be even more resolute than her brother, a Jedi.

Romance: The iconic romance between Leia and Han Solo portrays the smuggler and the princess in a refreshing light. Instead of conforming to outdated stereotypes, Leia wears the metaphorical pants in their relationship, with Han providing unwavering support. He respects her position and authority, saving personal matters for their private moments. The dynamic is built on trust and mutual respect, avoiding the cliché of a one-sided romance. Notably, this is evident in Return of the Jedi (ROTJ), where Leia gets shot, and Han's caring demeanor is juxtaposed with his trademark smirk as she reveals her weapon. Hera

Character: Hera serves as the capable captain of the Ghost and its crew, supported by her right-hand man, Kanan, and the astromech droid, Chopper. The Ideals of Rebels' Story and Its Setup Points:

Both the Star Wars Prequels and the Original Trilogy are anchored in the theme of battling oppressive regimes striving for absolute control. The Prequels delve into how this oppression came to be, forming a pivotal narrative standpoint. In contrast, The Clone Wars (TCW) primarily focuses on world-building, offering in-depth explorations of various factions and societies within the galaxy. While TCW provides a comprehensive view of the galaxy during a civil war, it doesn't follow a single large crew's story.

On the other hand, Star Wars Rebels (SWR) places a character-driven focus at its core. Unlike some other Star Wars media, such as movies, series, or shorts, SWR doesn't extensively explore different locations or delve into background storytelling. Instead, it prioritizes character development and episodic narratives.

To clarify my previous statement, SWR serves as a bridge between Episode 3 and Episode 4 of the Star Wars saga. It fills in the gaps, revealing the journey and sacrifices necessary to achieve freedom. The series commences with Ezra, a newly-minted Jedi Padawan, in a galaxy where Jedi are hunted down. He joins the nascent rebellion, which is just beginning to take shape. Ezra represents a glimmer of hope in a desolate world, even as forces of darkness attempt to extinguish that light.

This underscores the significance of SWR. Episode 4 depicted the Rebellion in its full-fledged form, with a substantial crew and support from multiple fronts. The Jedi aspect is exemplified through Kanan, who embodies the essence of a true Jedi. Ezra, too, matures into this role over time. Kanan's journey is unique; he was in the midst of his Padawan training when Order 66 unfolded. He never completed his training in the traditional sense and couldn't fully embrace the Jedi rules and traditions, which often felt restrictive and suffocating. Unbeknownst to him, his love for, attachment to, and bond with his lover, Padawan, and the rest of the crew went against traditional Jedi norms. However, this deviation allowed him to learn things the Jedi should have known centuries ago. As for Sabine, her character's growth and journey revolve around taking responsibility for her past mistakes and evolving into a stronger individual. Her journey includes abandoning the Imperial Academy, which produced weapons harmful to her people. This decision placed her family in jeopardy, with the majority of Mandalorians harboring animosity towards her. Despite these challenges, she emerged stronger with the support of those around her and a willingness to confront her past without forgetting or ignoring it.

The relationship between Ezra and Sabine in SWR was intentionally left ambiguous, making it challenging to definitively categorize. While the series provides hints through Ezra's statements, it remains open to interpretation. The internet, as expected, has embraced the ambiguity and given rise to various interpretations, showcasing the power of fan engagement and ship culture.

Ezra and Sabine, Examined from Every Angle:

This section breaks down how each of these interpretations aligns with the characteristics of these relationship types.

Siblinghood

Individuality: With Siblings, there come different personalities. One can be chaotic and the other calm. That’s what we see in that case what can be considered normal in a family. You have the artistic child with her younger brother being more traditional and following his father.

Birth Order: This being one of the strongest arguments with this relationship. It’s for many great to see nonblood people considering each other as found family, where in situation where one lost their family or their family was not good, there are still others that are as close as those you share blood with.

Conflict and Love: This is more of a thing that can be seen with the training of the dark saber, in which the one sibling, who is good at something, that they consider their specialty, having to have share it with the other, as they see it being taken away or provoking the other as they think they are better at something.

Shared Memories: Both have abandonment issues over their family, and they share a lot of missions together.

Complex Emotions: Once again going back to the dark saber training, you could interpret that scene where Ezra is saying that Sabine at least still has family, while he has only one family left, that she is not respecting

Character Development: This can be interpretation for the end of rebels

Realistic Dialogue: A lot of people regard them bickering as sibling bickering

Backstory: In the start, it is implied that with Zeb, she is one that takes him under her wing as a older sister role

Conflict Resolution: They talk to each other

Evolution: It can be them growing older and seeing each other as equals

External Influences: within the ghost crew, they consider each other as family. Hera especially, so its easy to take this as it can be seen that every member implies it for themselves.

Platonic Soulmates

Unique Bond: They are not really romantically nor as siblings introduced in season 3 and 4

Common Values: Both want to free their respective people, destroy the empire and find a place in the galaxy.

Unconditional Support: Within the end, Sabine never states to be romantically involved but she does stay on Lothal, keeps his memorable things in check and waits from him to return.

Enduring Relationship: Both are willing to entrust each other to a lot of things and giving each other the chance to make things happen.

Conflict Resolution: They talk.

Growth Inspiration: Within the season 1 and 2 where Ezra constantly flirts openly to Season 3 and 4 where it is not seen as a romantic way.

Non-Romantic Nature: Barely Romantic gestures of touch in the traditional sense or talking about the feeling to each other, but in a respectable comrade way.

Emotional Depth: Their connection through their past and need to make better of their mistakes while helping each other out of those.

Shared Moments: Their missions

Respectful Boundaries: With Ezra stopping the flirting to concentrate and help Sabine

External Influences: The ghost crew being a close family through common goals and connection gives them a more bigger leeway

Romantic

Chemistry and Attraction: It is clear that Ezra still has an crush on Sabine, with him meeting her for the first time, being enamored with her beauty. Their chemistry is working and expendable. Sabine later is more open for more.

Character Development: From the young kid who has a crush with no real idea to an jedi that keeps it low to fulfill his duty, Ezra evolves within 4 seasons to a more mature way of admiring Sabine while having respect for her. Within the episode where Kanan and Sabine

Conflict and Tension: From the end of rebels, where Ezra sacrifices himself to keep his loved one self but leaving Sabine alone and confused to Sabine not listening to him when he tells her to or when she does not give him a lot of decision power over her.

Communication: Sabine not being able to trust anyone really to her getting the closest to Ezra for even supporting him on way to dangerous missions and Ezra

Shared Moments: From the intimate closeness of holding him by his waist to fly to safety, to him keeping her steady on the loath wolves and both refusing to let the other get hurt.

Individual Lives: When it comes to Krownest, Sabine splits up for a little while, when Ezra takes on other missions. They know when they have to do something alone and they have their own bigger problems in the end.

Trust and Vulnerability: Within the later seasons (3 and 4) Sabine opens up to Ezra about her own Demons and gives her full trust to him. Both can depend each other’s live on the other. But when it comes to

Intimacy: Sabine has no problem holding Ezra closer while Ezra still gets flustered a bit(speaking escape Jetpack scene). But other than that they have no problem being closer.

External Influences: Both Chopper and Zeb have been making fun of Ezra and Kanan is aware to some known extend as he has to be the done calming Ezra down, when Sabine is in a Dangerous situation.

Conflict Resolution: On the battlefield its Sabine being the aggressor and Ezra the shield. With other conflicts, it is that Sabine needs time to herself and Ezra worrying but respecting her needs.

Long-Term Compatibility: Sabine cannot imagine a life without Ezra in it and Ezra has stated that he wants to come home to her (as well as the others).

Realistic Challenges: Sabine knowing that 10 years have gone by since Ezra disappeared and still being ever so loyal to him. Ezra, while knowing Sabines competence, still often not wanting her on solo missions.

Romantic Gestures: The Birthday gift from Sabine. The consistent support of Ezra.

Character Flaws: The way they cannot see other one in pain and taking full front and lying in front of the other.

Resolution: They give each other full trust on the final mission with Sabine on her way towards him.

My Version Of Season Three

If I was the one writing Season Three, this is what I'd do:

Din's quest to bathe in the Living Waters would be the end goal of the season.

Throughout the season, Din runs into various Mandalorians and somewhat accidentally ends up convincing them he should be Mand'alor. (bonus points for concealing him having the Darksaber until after his followers have sworn to follow him).

First Episode, Din goes to Nevarro, to get IG-11. Greef is being harassed by the pirates, so Din decides to help his friend, as shown in the show.

Second Episode, Din goes to Tattooine to talk to Peli. Afterwards, he goes to Boba and talks to him. This leads to an emotional scene wherein Boba talks about Jango and what he told Boba about Mandalore. Possibly even with a Jaster reference.

Third Episode, Din searches for the parts for IG-11. While he's doing so, he gets caught up in helping someone and meets another Mandalorian, someone from the True Mandalorians perhaps, to give Din another perspective on Mandalorians. Possibly Kal Skirata or Walon Vau? Neither are stated to be True Mandalorians but Jango had to know them somehow to recruit them for the Cuy'val Dar, the trainers on Kamino. They could direct Din to the surviving clones for help.

Fourth Episode, Din finds and befriends one or more of the remaining clones. Perhaps not Rex, seeing as he's likely to have a big role in Ahsoka, but maybe Wolffe. Some kind of adventure ensues. This could be used to help set up Ahsoka, if necessary.

Fifth Episode, Din runs into Axe Woves and Koska Reeves, them having left Bo Katan after she failed to get the Darksaber. They go on some kind of mission/adventure (maybe helping that Mon Calamari/Quarren couple run away?).

Sixth Episode, Din finds the Covert, hiding somewhere not full of monsters. Paz decides to accompany Din on his quest, out of a brotherly feeling of 'I hate this little brat but I can't let him go get killed'.

Seventh Episode, Din and his assorted Mando buddies go to Mandalore, where they find Gideon's base. The episode ends on a similar cliffhanger to the actual seventh episode, except if someone is killed off, it's done much better than Paz's death was.

Eighth Episode, Din and co battle Gideon and manage to defeat him and his troopers, reclaiming Mandalore. Din bathes in the Living Waters, redeems himself and adopts Grogu. The episode and season ends with Din being declared Mand'alor.

(way too many) thoughts on the ahsoka show

It was fine? I was really afraid there would be something I hated. And there was nothing I hated. Sad but true that that’s the bar for new SW material atm.

I really liked ep5; ep5 will probably get a rewatch. I liked the casting. The visuals were pretty cool. Huyang was a treasure.

So we’re really going with “the Force is in everyone so everyone can use the Force if you just try hard enough”? I… kind of hate that. That somehow feels ableist of me to say. But this is a heckin fantasy universe I feel like some people Really Are That Special, y’know?

Exception that proves the rule: A Force-less Sabine is still VERY SPECIAL. In Rebels, she can hold her own in a fight just as much as Kanan or Ezra. She’s extremely competent without the Force. She’s somehow less competent in this show

She really is just the worst here in ways that I do not remember her being in Rebels. I guess arguably Ezra was the one with Terminal Protagonist Syndrome in that show? And she caught it from him before he left?

I feel like what this season WANTED to be about – and honestly it’s the lowest hanging fruit possible for a show titled “Ahsoka” – is the tension between Ahsoka’s past / her relationship with her master and her future / her relationship with her apprentice. But I don’t think they actually hit a balance there, because they just did not make her relationship with her apprentice very compelling. Three reasons for this:

1. My bias. There are very few things that start with “Ahsoka &” that would get my attention more than “Ahsoka & Anakin.” Feel like I’m not alone on that one tho

2. Established canon. It’s already an uphill battle because Ahsoka and Sabine don’t have much of a relationship in Rebels. I’m honestly not sure they ever have a conversation. I remember Sabine being like “wow she’s cool much cooler than my idiot adopted brother”, and maybe that would be a place for a mentor figure relationship to start, if Sabine weren’t already DROWNING in mentor figures. It’s not that they have nothing in common, they are just straight up not a focal point of Rebels S2.

Hey you know who canonically has latent Force abilities? And maybe needs some training? And whom Ahsoka would have a Complicated feeling about without even needing a prior established relationship? Someone with mutually incompatible daddy issues? Someone deep enough in the cultural zeitgeist she literally would need no introduction?

Yes I KNOW it’s never gonna be canon and I should just go back to AO3 but it’s RIGHT THERE HRRRRRGGGGHHHHH

3. But a lot of the issues with Ahsoka & Sabine as a focal point are of the showmakers’ own creation. You’re telling me they have a relationship now? Fine, CONVINCE me of that:

First they shoot themselves in the foot by not giving us any information about how Sabine became Ahsoka’s apprentice originally. Why did Sabine want to become a Jedi when she didn’t want that in Rebels? DID she want to become a Jedi? What did she want to learn from Ahsoka? Why did Ahsoka decide to take an apprentice at that time and not any time before or after? How did she feel about it? And why pick Sabine, who is, and this is true, Not Very Good at the Force? Who approached whom, or did they run into each other accidentally? I suppose answering some of these questions might require answering “where was Ahsoka between 3 BBY and 4 ABY?” and they aren’t ready to do that yet, but guys. GUYS. If you’re trying to tell me how Ahsoka and Sabine fix their relationship, you gotta tell me why I care first.

I know I'm harping but I really cannot emphasize enough that "fuck it I'm gonna go round two on Found Family" is an arc-defining character beat for both Ahsoka AND Sabine and the fact that the audience doesn't get to see it really makes me question whether the powers that be themselves know what it looks like

Then we get vanishingly little information about why they broke up, and all of it is provided by Huyang. And what I’m picking up from what we have is “Sabine got too Revenge Quest-y, and Ahsoka got nervous.” I don’t even know where to begin here – maybe with the fact that if Sabine decided to go on a murder rampage, she wouldn’t need the Force, lol. We know Sabine’s family died, she wanted to go to Mandalore, and Ahsoka didn’t want her to. So… did Sabine go? How did she end up back on Lothal? Who left who? Was Ahsoka worried for Sabine’s safety, or that she was getting too Dark Side-y, or both? What juicy terrible intergenerational-trauma-driven things did they say to each other when they broke up? I want to compare and contrast this with Ahsoka leaving Anakin, but I do not have the information to do so because there are zero details and the info we DO have is from ANOTHER CHARACTER. Again, if this season is about this relationship, TELL ME WHY I CARE.

To me this is the same cardinal sin as Picard S1 – implying that some really interesting stuff happened when the audience wasn’t watching, and that it explains why the characters are behaving the way they are, and then… not disclosing that information. EXCEPT PICARD GAVE US MORE THAN THIS fjdghjfghjkhkd

I was not on Tumblr when I was watching Picard S1. Probably for the best.

But okay, they have a history, the show is gonna be about them, sure let’s move on. AND THEN THEY SPEND LIKE HALF THE EPISODES NOT EVEN IN THE SAME GALAXY. The time they do spend in the same room is 75% generic sniping. As someone who came into this way more invested in the Ahsoka & Anakin relationship, ep5 was very much NOW BACK TO THE GOOD PART

And the couple of beats they do have together have me going HUH? After ep2 I spent most of a day debating myself on whether there’s a missing scene, between Sabine getting stabbed and waking up in the hospital, where we see Ahsoka actually REACT. On one hand, Ahsoka would be upset, maybe we as the audience can fill in the gaps and we don’t need to spend time on it. On the other hand, maybe we do, tho? At the time I was thinking about how we haven’t seen Ahsoka truly emotionally vulnerable since TCW with the exception of “Shroud of Darkness” and maybe “Twilight of the Apprentice.” She has a very normal range of emotions, and she expresses them in very controlled ways, and I just wanna see what she looks like when that breaks down, ya know? What’s weird to me is that in ep4 when Ahsoka thinks Sabine is dead we do get this beat; she gets Real Mad there for a second. So maybe what we’re learning is it was a double beat and they should have cut the stabbing thing entirely I mean come on they had to have known they were gonna catch flack for that. Then again, having that moment shows the audience that Ahsoka does give a shit, more than she wants to admit and more than she typically shows Sabine, which is a fun compare/contrast with Anakin, and it might have given me a better understanding of the relationship if it had come earlier.

The other big beat is Sabine deciding to help the baddies. That is just such a devastatingly terrible decision. So bad, in fact, that I feel like we’re supposed to be drawing parallels to Anakin. Their whole “screw over the galaxy to save one person” thing. Except 1) Sabine is not Anakin and 2) in order for that to be interesting, Ahsoka needs more information than I think she has. She knows Padme died around the same time Anakin totally lost his shit, and that’s about it. Which is actually a fun little thought experiment: what assumptions does Ahsoka make about the causality there? The only people who could have given her more intel are Palpatine, Obi-Wan, and Vader – unlikely. So IF the show is about the lines between Anakin and Ahsoka and Sabine, Sabine’s choice here could be central to that, and crucially to Ahsoka’s understanding of that, except it’s just for the audience I guess?

I do really like that Ahsoka’s extremely chill about what Sabine did, though. Ahsoka “Eh Shit Happens” Tano. Somehow her lesson from all this is “masters support their apprentices literally no matter what. Citation: Mine did.” That’s an unhinged take and I expect nothing less from my blorbo.

WHICH IS WHY WE SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST GOTTEN A FLASHBACK TO THE SITUATION IN WHICH AHSOKA DIDN’T SUPPORT SABINE HRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

I realize that I’m really tearing into this thing pretty much just for not being something it isn’t. Like, it’s not BAD. But maybe its weaknesses stem from not committing to being about any one thing. It’s kind of about intergenerational trauma, it’s kind of a Rebels Part Two, it’s kind of a Filoniverse installment, it’s kind of a worldbuilding exercise. And that’s not necessarily too much material for an 8-hour show. It’s more like the powers that be DECIDED that was too much material.

Can we please just fire Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy now. I'm so tired of Padme and Naboo erasure. Both of them are important to Star Wars! And I hate the foreshadowing of the ST. The ST should've never happened at all. Screw JJ Abrams and Rian whatever his last name is.

ANYWAYS, the Jedi Order is reborn, and Luke is guiding the new Jedi. The New Republic has formed, and the galaxy is recovering from years of darkness from the Empire. What are sequels again? Idk. Sequels don't exist. I just see a new golden era in the galaxy.

Part I - Dave Filoni I will say Dave Filoni under the direction of George Lucas gave us amazing stuff-- Ahsoka Tano, Rex, Fives, Echo, Jesse, expansion of Order 66, the Clone Wars themselves. But him on his own? Not so great.

Ahsoka's walkabout in s7 was boring, the two sisters had potential but blundered in the execution. The BadBatch arc in s7 featured super amazing Anakin, and I did like the whole 'rescue Echo' plot line, but the Bad Batch as a TV show… I have some criticisms of it.

I like the ' what happens to the Clones after the Empire forms? They've served their purpose-- are they still relevant?' story line. It would be a great one to explore with normal clones. In fact, following Cody around, a clone who did participate in Order 66 and had his mind taken over, would've been a novel experience.

Instead we get genetically enhanced clones who don't have programing chips cause they're special snowflakes and don't partake in Order 66 bc they're special. Getting to see their side of Order 66 really brought nothing-- it's the same as the Jedi. Why are the clones turning against the Jedi? No one knows! It's rinse and repeat watered down version of ROTS, and i'd much prefer watching that movie over the first two episodes of TBB.

I will also give credit-- Dave Filoni and Favereau gave me The Mandalorian. A side character who doesn't know he's the main character just trying to make his way in the larger GFFA. He's a normal guy with a job. Then new dad has to deal with his adopted kid having Wizard powers. ME Likey. It's similar to Andor in down to earth, not life and death, Jedi/Sith fate of the Galaxy type of thing. It's what normal life would've been like in GFFA.

Third season and some of second season haven't felt like that though. Din keeps meeting all these famous people that are tied of in the 'Fate of the Galaxy' --Bo Katan, Ahsoka, Boba Fett, Cad Bane, Luke fucking Skywalker-- instead of more normal people. I do appreciate the smallness of season 1-- we had Peli, and Omera, and Karga. Characters not known to the larger galaxy, but still important in their own right.

Part II- Female Characters

Star Wars has never appreciated or loved it's female characters with the exception of Princess Leia. Original Trilogy follows Luke-- male character, who with the help of an older male character, goes and finds another male character pilot to help them infiltrate a small moon space ship full of male characters.

There are exactly TWO female speaking characters in A New Hope and one gets kriffed off to 'enhance male pain'.

Now, by nature of the story, Padme Amidala get shafted before she was even ever named or created -- Luke was raised by his aunt and uncle so something must have happened to his mother. She is 'unknown mother' defined only relationship with her son and then later to her husband.

It's not until the Phantom Menace when she gets her own storyline, that is little to non effected by her relationship to Anakin. She's a queen who has someone invade her planet, and with the help of two Jedi and the Gungan People, saves the day.

Anakin helps of course, by first winning them enough credits to get off tattooine, and second by blowing up the control ship, but both situations could be solved without Anakin. He becomes the unnecessary character-- his introducution is so low-key you don't realize the story is about him until Revenge of the Sith. He's a supporting side character in both Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

Both prequel movies that don't feature Anakin as protagonist or antagonist are hated by a large majority of SW fans, and usually because of the crime of not being perfect. Jar Jar Binks is just as annoying as C-3PO imo, but because the protagonist of TPM is Padme Amidala, the movie is hated, as opposed to ANH which features Luke.

Padme's fate was written before she even had a chance to exist, and therefore has no agency. I've seen others label her as weak, pointless, lame, because she dies of a broken heart, 'oh why didn't she live for her children' SHE DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE OKAY. George had already killed her by then, she can't live for her children when the author has decided otherwise. The nature of a prequel is it must narratively co-exist with the story already told. Padme must die or be removed from the picture so that Luke can be raised by his Aunt and Uncle. Anakin must fall to the Dark-Side so that he can be Darth Vader and do a heel-face turn at the end of ROTJ. the end has already been written. The beginning must fall in line.

Getting back on topic. Fathers are mentioned in The Mandalorian- which makes sense since it's about a Father and his Son. oh wait that's seems that's what Star Wars is about. Prequels were Anakin picking which father-figure he wanted to follow. Luke saving his Father. Din Djarin adopting a son with magic powers.

But Bo-Katan mentions her father TWICE and her sister doesn't even get a mention. Even though Bo was there at Satine's death, and the reason Bo left death watch and stood up to Maul. When Satine died, Mandalore split and fractured and any attempt of restoring mandalore just resulted in more fracturing and shattering.

In Obi-Wan Kenobi not mentioning Padme was criminal. The whole reason Anakin fell was to save her. Her daughter and son were featured prominently and her name didn't come up once besides two vague mentions.

SW needs to treat it's female characters better. Right now Leia is still the only one that's almost universally loved by the fans. Even Bo Katan has issues. By not acknowledging her past and mistakes and death watch , instead of making her a stronger character, the writers have made her weak. Making mistakes and learning from them and growing from them are what causes her to be relatable. So far, Mando S3 has been rushing her redemption process. They're having her reunite Mandalore, but she hasn't atoned or made up for her failings in the past.

It was her involvement in Death Watch that lead to her sisters death, and the writers essentially ignoring that and trying to hide it is lazy and the antithesis to character growth.

Part III - Disney's Anti- Prequel campaign.

The sequel trilogy… is problematic. While trying to emulate and give us the 'star wars' feeling again, all the films did was undermine the finale of the original trilogy.

What was Darth Vader's return to the light for if we're just going to bring back Palpatine? What was the point of Luke's rejection of the darkside and declaring himself a Jedi in the face of evil itself, if we're just going to have him become a hermit on a planet because he gave up? What was the point of the Alliance to Restore the Republic if we're just going to blow it up because it's corrupt?

The problem with trying to avoid the prequel trilogy is the sequel trilogy just became the prequel trilogy. Hear me out.

We have a corrupt Republic that is destroyed by an Empire. A Jedi student falls to the Dark Side and serves the Empire. A desert dwelling person with magical powers is told that they are the key to saving the galaxy. Am i talking about the Prequel Trilogy or the Sequel Trilogy?

The difference is the prequel trilogy was planned. From start to finish, no half baked retconning or switching directions (both original and sequel trilogies suffered from this) George Lucas had the entire prequels laid out. Their largest crime I believe is in writing/dialogue-- not the plot. It's complicated-- how does a republic turn into an empire? How does a Jedi Knight become a sith? How does the Jedi Order become extinct? Through War and Careful Planning. So while the prequels are not perfect, their world building brought much needed light and explanation to the Original Trilogy. It answered questions, but the answers were not what everyone liked.

They wanted the Republic to be conquered by an outside Empire, not for it to be one and the same. Fans wanted Anakin to be strong and heroic, and not a man who is crippled by self-doubt and his greatest failure is his greatest strength- his breath and depth of love.

The sequel trilogy should've been the struggle of not repeating the same mistakes. Of avoiding the past not repeating it. Of Luke not giving up and not becoming Obi-Wan. Of Han not becoming Qui-Gon Jinn or Ben Skywalker not becoming Darth Vader. Or Rey being her own self and not being Luke 2.0 aka finding out that her grandfather is evil just like Luke found out that his father was evil.

Star Wars is was the first to suffer from Disney's new nostalgia machine where live action play by play of beloved animated movies are created without souls; and sequels that are just the same story retold with the next generation. 'Happily Ever After The End' no longer exists, the hope of a happy ending destroyed with the next sequel announcement. Where does it end Disney? When you've wrung the last love and enjoyment out of your original titles? When consumers no longer go to the movies to see your new Frankenstein movie? When catering Fan Service is no longer profitable?

Disney's addiction to sequels and reboots found it's first home in Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and continues in the rest of the Star Wars universe. What is Boba Fett if not a sequel to Mandalorian? What is Ahsoka if not a sequel to Rebels? What is Obi-Wan Kenobi if not a sequel to the Prequel Trilogy? What is Andor if not a prequel to Rogue one?

The Mandalorian didn't start out that way. Was it in the same universe? yes and so by nature it makes it a sequel. But there were new original characters and an original story. Now it's become a sequel and a prequel; the connecting link instead of a stand alone.

So yes anon, Padme and Satine deserve better. But you know what? We deserve better too.

My Modern Clone Wars Bad Batch AU

Aka I just needed a place to brain dump.

Shaak is the ultimate clone mom. She had some of the the eldest of the clones except for Rex and Cody since Jango was unknowingly cheating on her before the divorce. Yes, they were married in the AU. IT JUST MAKES SENSE OK, CLONE MOM AND CLONE DAD. After the divorce, Shaak has a few more boys through embryo adoption of the embryos Jango didn’t let any other of his surrogates/baby mamas use.

Rex and Cody raise their younger brothers that make up the 501 and 212 on screen. Jango visits occasionally but has his own reasons for liking or not liking them.

Boba lives full time with Jango, but he’s not related to the others. Cue the loneliness and slight resentment- there are definitely a few restraining orders here and there.

The most-visited of Jango’s boys is clearly the Bad Batch. He doesn’t like the twins (Tech and Crosshair) but he has high hopes for Hunter and likes Wrecker enough (but does think he’s a little dumb and clumsy, little does he realize Wrecker is intentionally doing that in order to not have to leave his other brothers). Being the excellent dad he is (sarcasm) Jango’s logic is that a kid of Hunter’s would be ✨perfect✨. What he didn’t account for is for Omega to be a girl, so he automatically doesn’t like her and leaves Hunter with three brothers and a newborn.

Then he tries the same trick with Rex and decides Tup isn’t good enough either.

Neither Hunter nor Rex tell their brother/sons who the mom is, although they both know and resent Jango for taking advantage of them like that, because that’s basically what he did.

On thé non clone side of the world, Qui-Gon raised one foster-to-adopted son named Obi-Wan who fell in love with his high school sweetheart Satine and has a son named Korkie. Also in the family is a refugee named Anakin and his mother Shmi.

Well, Qui-Gon has a habit of just adopting random children so soon Anakin has a sister named Ahsoka, and her best friend’s name is Barriss. Barriss happens to be Luminara’s adopted daughter, and Luminara is Shaak’s best friend.

PHEW.

Ahsoka: *raises her arms while hopping around to be seen despite being in a group of 5* oh, yes yes, me! I have a question!

Obi-Wan: Yes, Padawan-not-mine?

Ahsoka: Okay so if we made a humanoid pyramid, would you end up at the top, or Anakin.

Obi-Wan: …why couldn’t you end up at the top? Wouldn’t that be lightest near the top? Anakin would be near the bottom.

Anakin: *long gasp* Did you just call me FAT??

Obi-Wan: Ani. You’re a giant in comparison to literally everyone else here.

Anakin: *gasps and turns to Rex to ask for defense*

Rex: *stepping back with hands up* Listen. I’m not. A part of this.

Cody: I am. You’re massive, Skywalker.

Anakin: *turns to Obi* Why is your commander so mean to me?

Obi-Wan: *deep sigh* He’s mean to everyone equally. Except Wooley. I’m pretty sure he would like to adopt Wooley.

Cody: Bold of you to assume I haven’t already said the adoption vows. He’s my baby. I birthed him myself.

Ahsoka: Why did you say the adoption vows if you birthed him?

Cody: Backup plan.

Obi-Wan: *more sighing* Ahsoka, why do you want us to make a humanoid pyramid?

Ahsoka: Oh, I don’t. I just bet Bariss twenty credits I could distract you all with the dumbest thought that came to mind and it would work :)

Anakin: Well. She got us there.

Funny OT AU fic idea I just had:

Rex figures out that Luke and Leia are Anakin’s children very quickly after the first Death Star is blown to bits.

He uses the following details to support his determination:

Luke’s last name is Skywalker. He has Anakin’s lightsaber. He can wield the Force. (Luke is the easy one to figure out.)

R2-D2 is particularly protective of both Luke and Leia.

Only one other person ever achieved the combination of stubborn forthrightness, boldness, and (almost reckless) unconventional leadership that Leia possesses.

It takes about ten seconds into one mission planning session with Leia for Rex to flash back to 501st shenanigans and crazy Jedi General schemes.

Absolutely no dead Jedi can come back as a Force Ghost fast enough to stop Rex from immediately adopting Luke and Leia and telling them all about the stupid shit that Anakin got away with during the Clone Wars.

And then Ahsoka finds them. She verifies Rex’s claims and then proceeds to go, “OMG, I’m your Aunt Snips. Neither the Jedi Council nor Master SkyGuy can’t stop me from looking after you now! We’re going to get into so much trouble together.”

Vader’s reveal to Luke on Bespin becomes even more hilarious. Vader expected many reactions — except the one he got. Luke has heard all of the tea and knows all the embarrassing stuff that Anakin did in front of the 501st and Ahsoka. Vader was not prepared to get ribbed as hard as he did as Luke buys time for a rescue from Leia and Rex.

And Han gets trolled hard as soon as Rex figures out that he’s into Leia. (Someone has to make Han’s life hard when he’s trying to pursue Leia romantically. Bail and Anakin aren’t there to do it, so Rex and Ahsoka have to team-up.)

Also, it makes Luke and Leia finding out they’re twins extra funny. It isn’t some big reveal by Obi-Wan as a part of explaining destiny and a greater purpose. Nah, it was a clone with a finely-tuned “Skywalker is about to do something crazy, reckless, bold, and possibly stupid” sense who told them.

Came up with a Miss Congeniality AU today, with a bunch of input from @whymylifewrites, who actually did suggest the main ship to be Quintress, which I just lost my mind about, because yes.

(I'll integrate most of her comments into the post naturally, but a few took the form of a Q&A that I left as separately indicated.)

It would be so easy for Dooku to be the Pageant Coach.

Dooku: Of any girl I've ever taught, you are truly unique. If I ever had a daughter, I imagine she would be a lot like you. Ventress: [smiles] Dooku: Which is perhaps why I've never reproduced.

Just imagine him doing a Judgmental Pose when he looks Ventress up and down. He can do a lot but they are going to need quite some foundation to cover the facial tattoos.

"They're cultural! Those are allowed!" "They're identifying marks that would have been a scandal in the state pageant; people will wonder they hadn't heard about them already."

As far as 'why is Ventress in the FBI' goes... I think she was a recruit from like. People they arrested. Like she was such a good criminal that they offered to pay her to stop crimes with them instead, and now she's the only person that can pass for young enough to do this undercover work. Quinlan almost definitely recruited her.

The pageant director needs to be Evil and Woman and Femme so I guess Miraj Scintel. The host isn't in on the crime, so... I would have said Obi-Wan but he's already got a role. Other options are Mace or Bail, so I'm going with Bail.

Ventress goes in expecting airheads and instead gets blindsided by shit like "Oh hey, we just looked up New York's arrest record" and "Massachusetts graduated Summa Cum Laude and is expected to be a Senator less than ten years after she finishes her law degree; also she put off her wedding for this since contestants can't be married.

(Listen. Padme's from Martha's Vineyard. I declare it so.)

Ventress befriends: New York - Bo-Katan - they spar at least once, and it's flirty until Bo mentions her girlfriend back in the city Mass. - Padme - they get into really long arguments about government overreach and law enforcement; put off her wedding for this Nevada - Ahsoka - baby of the event (just barely scraped by as old enough), jokes about biting people. Her pageant coach is her adoptive brother, Obi-Wan; her talent is acrobatics or aerial silks Louisiana - Aayla - baton twirler Texas - Fennec - Ventress's roommate, and also very much emblematic of the movie quote about how "This is Texas, everyone has a gun." Illinois - Bly - first trans contestant, flirty with Aayla

Other contestants: North Dakota - Barriss - her talent is piano Alabama - Steela - violin Montana - Riyo - talent is opera singing

Bo would also be a decent Main if not Ventress. She's the New York Lesbian, I've decided. She is doing it purely for the scholarship money. Satine didn't pressure her but I think she trained Bo and was the one who suggested it as an option for College Things.

I think Ventress deserves to make creepy comments about how to Do Crime that all the other girls look at her like ??? for, except Bo. Bo thinks the comments are Entirely Reasonable And Normal.

Bo adds her own comments and Padme looks on in mild disappointment. Ahsoka asks clarifying questions. She wants to be one of the big kids and Fit In.

Ventress: Nah, that wouldn't work, you need a higher quality wiring if you want to short-circuit that alarm to break in without alerting the cops. Padme: ...I mean I know why I know that. Why do you know that?

Barriss does not at all know or understand what kind of company she's fallen into

Ventress and Bo have extensive criminal records. Padme's fiance is an electrical genius who likes to watch youtube videos about how to Do Crime Things because he fantasizes about being a Leverage character. Ahsoka's ready for anything. Steela's done a lot of Macgyvering nonsense, she gives me A/V club vibes. Aayla's a kickboxing teacher.

Barriss is just. Here.

Ventress is getting a very skewed idea of what beauty pageant contestants are like.

Whymylife said "ok all of this is perfect but anakin fantasizing about being a leverage character when ventress is as close to a real life leverage character one can get is so so funny to me"

Padme decides she has to introduce them. I think Ventress want to noogie him.

Dooku introduces Ventress to Ahsoka because he knows Obi-Wan through the pageant circuit.

whymylife said "i was wondering how like, the anakin and obi-wan and ahsoka situation is. like did anakin move to mass for college or something and meet padme there? was padme's involvement with the pageant what inspired ahsoka to do it?"

Which yes, I'm a-okay with that.

Initially I said that, honestly, the only part too complicated to keep is Aayla and Quinlan, because they could have theoretically just asked if he could get his little sister to wear a wire.

HOWEVER there is room for PLOT

Aayla doesn't have any kind of security clearance, so they still need an actual field agent to send in. Quinlan spends the entire op dodging Aayla and trying not to let her see he's here and supporting her competition.

Aayla wants nothing to do with this FBI nonsense, and so Quin is like "No, my little sis is 100% not an option. We have to stick my rival/crush/work buddy in the heels instead."

Bly and Aayla almost kiss during the girl's night out, but then one of them vomits or faints like Rhode Island in the movie. They share some hot chocolate after the climax when post-bomb cleanup is happening (they're just sitting on the steps, a little torn up, hair in disarray) and Their Shoulders Are Touching.
