Reddit and Twitter need this most but I won’t, because reasons

I have said before I don’t think ALL the Camry and Sydney hate is racially motivated but PLENTY of it is. It’s Richonne 2.0. This isn’t new to me.

There is the outright racist coded comments like claiming Sydney has to be a lesbian, has to be asexual, looks like Kendrick Lamar (yes, it was said), along with the inability to ever empathize with her character.

But I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about unconscious bias with people who don’t get that they feel the way they do because Sydney is black. So anyone reading this may want to take a moment and honestly examine what I’m saying.

Unconscious bias is, for example, the thing that leads doctors, sometimes even black ones, to presume that black people don’t feel pain in the same way whites do. It’s not necessarily malicious intentional action or obvious hatred towards us. It’s subtle perceptions that change how one views the nature and capabilities of black people while still being able to be friends with them, respect certain qualities about them, and maybe even at times be allies. But there is always something different in perception that is so invisible that you aren’t aware of it.

I've seen it in white people, strangers and acquaintances, making assumptions about what I’m into or should be, what my education and earnings are, and who I should be friends and lovers with. It’s the thinking we can always handle anything and not be burdened. It’s what is happening a lot with Sydney, especially with Carmy.

People are allowed to not like the ship. They don’t have to. I’m not going to assume everyone who doesn’t is racist. But for anyone who doesn’t I think it would be beneficial to examine a few things.

Viewing the first scene between them, how would you interpret Carmy’s taken aback, entranced, nervous reaction to seeing her? To me it obviously says attraction and surprise. If there is another explanation I’ve never heard it. People just gloss over that interaction and I think it’s a tell. It shows that people may not be able to see him showing signs of attraction to her because she doesn’t look like who you would expect him to be attracted to.

2. How would you explain the way Carmy is constantly looking at Sydney closely like he doesn’t look at anyone else? When we see her from his perspective she if glowy or hazy or out of focus. We don’t see that with any other characters he interacts with aside from that finale flashback with Mikey. He doesn’t look at Sugar like that. Syd is the only one who gets special framing. If you’ve never noticed, why?

3. If you think Syd could be a lesbian or asexual, why her and not for instance Tina, or others on the crew? Sex isn’t referenced a lot so why is it not being referenced with her any different than it not being referenced with others? Often people assume a woman who dresses tomboyish is just that. Why can’t that just be her style? I have plenty of women friends that are straight and sexual with a similar style.

4. Could you imagine the scenes with Syd and Carmy if a man was in Sydney’s place? What would you think of the vibe?

5. Could you see Ayo in the Claire role?

6. Could you see Jeremy and Ayo playing love interests in a totally different show?

7. If Molly Gordon plays Syd could you better picture her with Carmy?

8. When you see a dark skinned black woman in a couple with a white man IRL does it make you especially take notice or feel it’s a bit off?

9. Does the thought of Sydney and Carmy kissing or being intimate make you have an extreme reaction like eeew or gross? Maybe not so extreme does it make you feel awkward to think about it?

10. Do you often compare their relationship to siblings?

11. Can you recognize the Syd isn’t into Marcus romantically and has other options?

12. Can you only envision Sydney alone and not needing romance because her career is all she needs?

13. Do you think maybe Carmy could find her attractive if she looked more glamorous?

14. Could you more easily see Carmy into Syd if she was played by Zendaya or someone that looks similar?

15. Have you never seen a couple that looks like Syd and Carmy?

16. if you saw the Emmy magazine photo shoot did you not perceive the touchy pose with Ayo and Jeremy as sexually suggestive and think it’s an impossibility?

17. How do you think Clairs would react if she saw all of their interactions?

18. Is it easy to view Sydney as having complex motivations and emotions at the same time? Can you possibly see that she’s jealous of Claire because she distracted Carmy from business AND because she has feelings for Carmy? Is it possible to think she can view Carmy as a boss, mentor, and someone she is attracted too and that’s hard to process?

All of these things may not apply to your perception but if any do realize these are very common examples of how unconscious bias plays out when thinking of black women, especially in storytelling. This is a lot of what has historically been seen with similar ships and IRL mixed couples. That’s not to discount the numerous white man, white woman ships that people don’t like, but these things are consistently present with black women and white men presented in the media and celebrity couples. There is always more scrutiny with these pairings.

You may not have a context to understand that. You may have never been questioned in this way. You may be angered to think it’s possible this is a role in how you are viewing things, but it’s the truth based on lived experience and observation. It’s worth examining.

I’m not here to be hostile, I’m just trying to voice in a gentle way what so many here already know and you may not be aware of or ready to think about.

I’m not going to argue with anybody about it but any intelligent, respectful dialogue is welcome and encouraged.

I love your art and your mind set of just messing around to make cool stuff. but I’ve also seen you love been to at least one convention (I didn’t scroll far enough to see more about conventions) and I wanted to ask. How you did it? I really enjoy making art and I would love to make it a career so this boils down to :

how did you do it? And how can I do it too?

not just like first steps but what happens after that? I’m young enough that if this doesn’t work out I have plenty of time to look into other careers before worrying about paying for rent or necessities with money from my future occupation. I know that everyone’s experience is different but I still hoping you can give me a somewhat clear answer.

Hello there! Thank you for your message.

These questions are large and hard to answer. Being more specific in your questions helps. "How I did it" is very... large in scope. That question could be answered just by saying, "I did it by never wanting anything else and never losing sight of my goal." But that doesn't help you much. So I'll just try to touch on some key points and contexts.

I'm 32. Only in the last couple years has my practice been enough to make a living doing it. I've always wanted this and literally everything I've done in my life has been to get here. I've worked two jobs my entire working life (age 19-now): retail/customer service and art stuff on the side. Because of the pandemic, I got double unemployment and stimulus checks, which became my initial investment into merch and savings safety net to get started. I started therapy to address my fears of asking for help, my negative self-talk, and catastrophic thinking. (Therapy has helped me with my art so much.) Then I was laid off for real in 2020 and hit the ground running with art. I split rent with roommates, I live very very cheaply, and art is my passion. If art for a living is what you want to do and you're happy to make lots of concessions to get it, this career works. It takes a while to get momentum and regular sales/attention-- just don't quit. The more stuff you do the more people will recognize you and like your work.

It would be dishonest to not address my privilege here, too. My parents have always emotionally supported my practice, my friends too, and I got to go to art school with no debt. I did outside of school art mentorships. My art education experiences taught me a lot of art techniques and self-employed skills and that only happened due to the support of my folks. I had resources a lot of people don't. (Which is why I want to help new artists learn this stuff as much as I can; not everyone is as lucky as I am.)

My advice for you if you want to do what I do, which is being self-employed making and selling art and art merchandise for a living:

Get used to making concessions right at first. Your art career will probably not start out gangbusters, so get used to low sales and saving money and working hard. Make things within your means and grow from there.

Fuck around and find out. Try making merch, try making videos, try things you see other artists doing, try everything and see if it works for how you like to make stuff. I learn so much from YouTube, to be totally honest. Artists are good sharers.

Follow a shit ton of artists and see what works for them. Join artist groups and ask thoughtful, specific questions to learn from those already doing it.

Learn how to write about your art. Write about why you make it. It helps make it more compelling to others. "How to Sell Your Art Online" by Cory Huff is a good book to read for tips on this.

Develop a healthy relationship with art-making. If you sit down at a blank page and it terrifies you: address that first. Don't try to start a business if you're still struggling with making art regularly.

In fact, don't start a business until you're really ready. Art comes first. You can easily do art and build skills and do commissions and run an online shop along with working a job that pays bills reliably while you grow into the artist you're meant to be.

Don't pigeon-hole yourself into only one channel: don't JUST apply to cons, try street fairs too. Don't JUST sell online, get your work into cafes as well. You'll see which routes are more profitable/worth the time as you try them out. Eggs in many baskets, you know.

There's probably a whole essay I could write on this. And you're right--mileage varies between person to person vastly. The part of the world you live in, your access to transportation, education, your mental health, what type of work you like to make, etc. Art careers almost never look the same 1:1 even in fandom spaces like furry/anime. If you're self-made, it will reflect that.

I recommend the YouTube channels Rafi Was Here, Robin Sealark, Cat Graffam, and the website The Abundant Artist (again by Cory Huff) for more resources.

Don't be afraid to take leaps of faith. Try everything. Be true to what works for you and what doesn't feel sustainable. Be authentic with your art and stay true to your interests. And good luck.

Ayo random question cuz I’m so interested: what exactly do you head-cannon is Warrior’s past? (If you don’t then just ignore me :D)

so full warning here i have never played the hyrule warriors games bc they're not my thing (i have played fe warriors bc robin my beloved <3). i dont know any of the canon so this is pure headcanon fuckery:

-> warriors is highly based on midshipmen who were young officers in training aboard navel vessels usually from upper class families. except he's army so i call him a middleman instead bc i dont have a better alternative XD

-> he (like all/most of the links) is orphaned. he was old enough that he vaguely remembers his parents but young enough that he couldnt tell you anything about them.

-> from the orphanage, he was adopted by a noble family (which i havent come up with a name for yet). he has four adopted siblings who are all the biological children of this lord and lady

-> despite being adopted young it was always made clear that he was specifically adopted out of charity to make the family look good. warriors spent most of his childhood being paraded around as the poor orphan commoner who is learning how to be a proper gentleman and never as an actual son/brother

-> he is not close to any of his family and in fact resents his adopted father. his adopted mother never really had much to do with him and neither did his siblings so he just has a vague distaste for them. he does not speak to them of his own accord but the child in him still wants to please his adopted father so he is still involved with them

-> he grew up receiving an education and was held to much stricter standards than his siblings. he received very little praise for his efforts and was spared very little affection so he always worked himself to the bone for any scrap of it he could get. as a result hes extremely well read and quite good at math

-> at 14 he was sent into the army as a middleman. his father claimed it was because he was the only one of the children who would do well there. he excelled there if only bc he was finally somewhere he could receive the recognition he so desperately wanted/needed.

-> he did not have an easy time making friends bc he was a bit of a kiss ass and did not/does not know how to form and maintain valuable close relationships

-> warriors doesn't really know the difference between genuine affection and being praised for his usefulness. it's not difficult to take advantage of him by inflating his ego

-> he sets impossible standards for himself (some of which were forced upon him) and practices a lot of self-loathing when he feels as though he's failed

-> he refers to his adopted father as his "benefactor" but will call him father in passing

-> he doesn't write home

-> warriors saw his first battle at 16. he killed his first enemy at 17. he still has nightmares about both

-> we're getting a little fucky with ranks here but he *is* an officer. specifically a captain which is company grade. he likely commands small units on the battlefield but mostly up until the war of ages worked as a liaison. i think during the war he was given much more responsibility but his rank stayed the same bc chaos. he regrets every person who ever died under his command :(

*Lucifer is aware of his existence and sends him to Earth to be away from the wrath of his 'uncles' in heaven.

*Damian is actually pretty old, much older than he looks but Lucifer made it to where he never questions why he doesn't age physically, and he doesn't remember his parents and always assumed he was an orphan.

*Damian is my OC/MC Astra's work bestie, she is not aware that he is Lucifer's son until she meets Lucifer and makes an educated guess. This is why she doesn't have much drive to flirt because she feels it'd be inappropriate of her lol

*Damian's powers are similar to Lucifer's where his voice carries the most power but it's normally in the form of music/singing. (lol I'm making him sound like a siren) This works on Earth too, which is why each of his performances with his band members tends to be successful due to his influence. (He isn't aware until he goes to hell)

So that's the rough of his design for WHB

Domani's redesign doesn't stray far from her original OC design, except for hair color and length.

Now for WHB I had to change her origin a little. I wanted to have a reason for her to meet Lucifer since we know that he fell AFTER Solomon. So I went with the angle of Domani being a human/dragon hybrid. She can travel between the dragon's realm and earth by her powers and a crystal that's embedded in her wrist given as a gift by the elder dragons. Her human mother died of natural causes, but the village she lived in that worshiped the dragons was aware of Domani's existence and treated her with high respect almost out of fear of angering the 'gods' they served.

During the massacre that we read in the event chapter, Domani senses trouble, but by the time she arrives back to her homeland, she witnesses the carnage and learns her father did not survive as well. As she buries everyone and gives them their proper goodbyes, this is when she runs into Lucifer who realizes there's still someone alive other than the two dragons he sent away.

They have a brief meeting, and he tells Domani what has happened and that it would be dangerous for her to stay as Michael may also kill her or capture her to find the dragon's pearl that Gamigin has. Lucifer is unaware of where Gamigin and Serenade have landed but advises Domani to go search for them as they are the last living dragons.

Because of Domani's powers and lineage, she's able to locate the two of them, but for my lore's sake...after years of searching, she finds young dragon Gami after OG Gamigin has dissapeared and passed on his identity. She is able to indentify him, and introduces herself. He is able to tell she is part dragon by his senses and he is aware of the crystal in her wrist and who it belonged to based on the elder's teachings. From there She, Gami, and later Jjok live together and that's when they find Lucifer.

Here's the rough facts:

*When Lucifer fell, Domani was out looking for Jjok because the three of them got split up somehow during their errands. So when Jjok and Domani return to the house to see an injured Luci, she recognizes him and helps.

*During the first year of Lucifer living with Domani, Lucifer starts to grow fond of Domani romantically, though he isn't sure to act on it, feeling it would only end in sorrow.

*Domani is the first to confess to Lucifer, who first turns her down silently, trying to save her heartache. Though, later he finds her again and finally admits his true feelings in a roundabout way.

*The four of them live happily for the next year as a family. Then the scene where Satan shows up happens. But there's one problem...Domani is not there because she's off in the forest...checking on...

DAMIAN (how is this possible?)

Lore about Damian's birth:

Lucifer and Domani did have intimate moments together, neither of them knowing that because of a "miracle" basically the magic of the crystal and Lucifer being neither angel nor devil this caused the pregnancy. Domani did not tell Lucifer or the others about Damian, who was born while still encased in his embryo sac with a protective layer (like an egg but without a hard shell) he continues his growth in a nest Domani made for him deep in the forest away from anything Paradise Lost that could bother him. She uses the crystal by pressing it against the egg and chanting an ancient mantra that helps him grow with each passing day.

Now that you know that

*When Satan is confronting the crew like in the event story, Domani does her daily routine and comes back to all of the commotion. But she showed up at the worst time...when Michael had appeared.

*She rushes immediately to protect Gamigin, Jjok, and Lucifer, jumping in when Jjok is about to get shot with Michael's light. She's hit in the shoulder which takes a good chunk of her out, before Lucifer can react. She didn't die immediately due to the powers of the crystal in her wrist, but she was bleeding out quickly.

*This is the part where Lucifer decides to choose to reside in Hell as the new king of Paradise Lost like in the event story. Michael returns back, betrayed and upset swearing that it's Domani's fault his brother lost his way and he vows to sever that "issue" in hopes of Lucifer returning.

*Lucifer and Gamigin can heal Domani from the brink of death but she still needs rest. This is when she tells Lucifer about their son and his whereabouts.

*Lucifer retrieves Damian from his hiding spot, seeing that he has emerged from his egg sac appearing to be the age of an infant (around human size of a 1 year old)

*Lucifer does not want Damian living in Paradise Lost, for he feels it will be too dangerous. Satan who's still there for the moment volunteers to watch him, saying Gehenna will accept Lucifer's son.

*Lucifer is the one who named him Damian btw

*Lucifer makes the decision to leave Domani and Damian under Satan's care, based on Jjok's recommendation that Gehenna would protect them. (but tbh Paradise Lost would be safer)

*During Domani's stay in Gehenna, Gabriel and Raphael attack Gehenna at the same time, and Raphael finds Domani, having instructions to kidnap her and bring her back to heaven.

*Neither Gabriel nor Raphael are aware of Damian nor do they even care to sense him. But they are both confused when they feel "their brother's presence" near but ofc Lucifer is not there. They ignore it and head back to heaven with Domani.

*Satan immediately alerts Lucifer, who isn't mad at Satan directly, but he is dissapointed with himself for not protecting Domani more viligantly. But he does find Damian, and from there states two things.

-His son will live on Earth, he will not remember anything that causes him pain even if it's his parents

-If he finds a way back to Hell, he will inherit his birth right as his son

With that he sends him off to Earth and that's where Damian lives out as an adult, being adopted by many families.

-The families that adopt Damian and those who encounter him or hear his voice all forget who he is after 10 years. The cycle repeats itself when he speaks to them again, if even.

--this rule does not apply to Astra because she is the daughter of Solomon

---this is how he able to stay on Earth for years without being questioned about why he never ages (if you are wondering about how he's able to work and do things in the modern world, that's Satan's doing...he frequents Earth to check on him, and indirectly makes it where no one really checks for things like that. this detail i'm still working on lol)

Domani's Angelfication:

Raphael keeps Domani for himself because he knows Michael would just kill her. Instead he decides to experiment on her, and try out angelfication just out of a whim, "if she dies she dies" sort of thing. To his annoyance she doesn't, but adapts as an angel, thus why her appearance changes drastically. But during this change her memory is wiped from the shock and she forgets Lucifer, Damian, and who she originally was. The crystal that was in her wrist was given to Damian who still has it (it's hidden in the nape of his neck under the skin)

The three seraphs decide to use Domani as a weapon, and she does it quite well. Being that she is part dragon she can lay waste to thousands of devils at a time.

When Satan and the other kings hear about this new terrifying angel, the one most surprised about it is Lucifer, seeing what his lover has become.

Now that Domani is an angel she looks at him with cold eyes, she doesn't even remember poor Gamigin or Jjok who are now fearful of her.

She is the only angel that is able to visit Paradise Lost, but she is unable to harm Lucifer, Gamigin or Jjok. It's not that she can't...she emotionally is unable to follow through, part of her old self fighting back.

Domani does overcome the memory loss, but this is after Damian now an adult makes it back to Hell because he came looking for Astra as a request from Minhyeok (more about that later)

It seems the family reunion is as before, but it's not all that it seems. Domani did overcome the memory loss, but only during a battle. She ended up protecting Lucifer, and she gets injured...badly...by Michael.

Domani died that same night in Lucifer's arms, but her soul was able to find rest in crystal in Damian's body. Gamigin explains that she is alive only in that state but her physical body is no longer in existence.

Lucifer has convinced himself that he saved her and that she visits him often, but this is all part of his hallucinations in order to keep sane.

Damian's role after what happens with his parents:

Damian is tasked to help Astra break the contracts, but at the same time he stays in Paradise Lost often visiting to make sure his father is doing okay, but finds it painful to be around him due to the continued hallucinations and Lucifer mentioning Damian's mother.

He seeks revenge against the seraphs, but that is on the back burner, he first helps Astra and intends to keep his promise to Minhyeok, to make sure Astra is okay, safe, and will eventually return to Earth if she wants to.

GEEZ this is long I'm sorry. I just had to ramble.

That's pretty much how things are going here. It's angsty as fuck, but character development amirite?

I'll probs draw Damian and Domani in my own style later when I feel like doing so, but this is my ramble for both of them. There are most likely MAJOR flaws in logic, but I'll straighten that out as I go.

He cannot risk anybody finding out about you, especially the survivors at first- he does not trust them to not use you against him.

You're literally his little ray of sunshine, he happily educates you about different things, feeds you, bathes you, reads you bedtime stories, learns to play different games with you, and just tries to raise you to be better than the horrible human beings who used to infest the earth.

Now I mentioned already that he literally adopts you as his own, but if you were to actually refer to him as your parent? He would cry, he won't tell you that but still.

He also does have some helicopter parent tendencies, as much as he tries to show an 'I believe my kid needs to be independent and tough' face, he would lose his shit if you got injured in some way.
