Any of you fellow Dracula fans also producers, film crew, etc. like me?

I'm writing a Dracula movie which, slowly but surely, I will direct - and I can't be the only one on set who is "Totally Normal" about JonMina.

If any of you Dracula fans are filmmakers - or know people who would love to help - hopefully we can make a Dracula feature film together that finally does the book (and fandom) justice!

That's fair, you're allowed to have that opinion but I'm going to be very blunt, I find a lot of the criticism leveled at LXG over its use of Mina to be a little hypocritical.

let's be real, a lot of you all in the Dracula fandom like to ship Jonathan with Drac, or with one of the three suitors without any regard to Mina's half of the relationship, but I notice as soon as anyone tries to separate Mina from Jonny some of you guys have a problem.

To be quite honest I don't think the Dracula fandom actually believes Johnathan or Mina's relationship is that sacred and untouchable, they just have a weird bug up their ass about LXG having them divorce. And it's fair if you don't like LXG, it's not for everyone but no one is telling you you have to be part of that fandom if you like Dracula. I get it, we all love Johnathan, but it feels like the idea that Mina can exist as a character outside of him in any context is one a portion of the fandom struggles with.

But I've seen people in that same part of the fandom be largely accepting of seeing Johnathan without Mina or worse, they're fine with Mina being reduced to a background character with all of her personally sanded down to "Johnathan's wife." I just feel like the criticism for how LXG handles Mina is never actually about MINA it's about Johnathan and that makes me reluctant to take it in good faith. I don't personally care what your ships are, have at them and have fun, but maybe also stay in your lane and don't get your panties in a twist because some other writer wanted to do something else with the characters.

Hey, I have questions...

Since the whole Dracula hunting squad has a thing where they know shorthand with the Harkers starting first (cause I think they learned that the Count Dracula can't read shorthand), do you think that later on Alucard, who is Count Dracula, would learn shorthand?

Also do you think young Quincey Harker also was taught how to make shorthand? To continue the tradition...

There also is the fact I was wondering if Alucard would go back and read all the journals that the group made? To learn about the viewpoint of the other people and learn from his mistakes. Or maybe he does not....not wanting to relive everything that happened. But there is also would he have the opportunity to read the journals or one of the Hellsing group (like Abraham, Arthur or Integra) would try to stop him?

There also the question of if the group was okay with the fact that Abraham van Hellsing brought Count Dracula to England? Like maybe he could try and escape from the prison.

Hope a lot of fanfiction comes out from the Dracula Daily emails. Like, all these people are reading the story, there’s sure to be more fanfic and fanart and just general fandom things. And we’re really hopeful and excited for this!

Love to be on a website where I can join such hit 2022 fandoms as "century old public domain novel being read very slowly" and "half-century old mafia film that does not actually exist."

I am back

So, my previous blog @scarlet-for-me-scarlet-for-you became the next one in the long line of the Mysterious Gothic Disappearances of the Dracula fandom. I already had a different blog tied to that email get deleted and restored and lost a sideblog this way, so I suppose the likeliest explanation is that it was related to problems with the email address somehow. So I decided to make a new address specifically for this tumblr and start the whole thing anew. I, unfortunately, am not done with my Dracula obsession, but feel more confident to post more of my own takes on it.

In other words

Fact: The earliest reliably dated use of the phrase “fucked up” appears in the court records of a US Navy court-martial case from 1863; the way the phrase is used suggests that its meaning was already well known at the time, but this is the first known printed record of it that we can confidently put a date to.

Additional fact: Bram Stoker’s Dracula is set in 1897.

Conclusion: It would not anachronistic for your Dracula fanfic to have a character describe the Count as a fucked up old man.

I think it’s fascinating that the original horror of dracula is kinda lost on us because our cultural well has been poisoned. I don’t know any 6-year olds who can’t tell you vampires are EVIL or are unfamiliar with the name dracula.  Reading the first chapter and seeing Johnathan, our beloved, think about asking his new friend COUNT DRACULA for help is comedic! Of course he’s walking into danger. We’re genre aware. 

However, also while doing dracula daily, there’s a new kind of horror. Both the prolonged no knowing when the next entry will drop but the sadness and horror of having to sit with the characters and wanting so desperately to give our heroes a metaphorical rosaries to protect them. We know this is a sinking ship full of vampires, we know how dangerous the situation is, how woefully unprepared everyone else is.

Which brings me back to how the dynamic has shifted, and I think unexpectedly so. Originally, dracula’s horror comes from the audience being basically London. He is scary because it’s unnerving to discover what new and terrible calamity is coming. What new powers and murderous feeding will come next? Who exactly are we locked in this room with? Will we make it out alive? But now, the horror stems from the audience being the Transylvanians, desperately longing to catch Jonathan before he gets to the carriage, begging him to turn back now. We are condemned to watch the ship as everyone gets picked off one by one. It’s a different but equally visceral kind of horrorshow.

It just occurred to me that, assuming Bram Stoker's Dracula takes place roughly in the year of its publication, John Harvey Kellogg is coicidentally about the same age as Abraham van Helsing, and now there's a crackfic I'm genuinely upset I'll never have time to write.
