My Manga Yuu Wish List

With the appearance of Yuuka Hirasawa in Savanaclaw Manga replacing Yuuken Enma from the Heartslabyul Manga, it's safe to say that we might expect more Yuu in future manga installments. So, today, I have a wish list for the next future Yuu.

Now, to premise this: This is a wish list. Thus, this might sound very self-indulgent. These are just my opinions and you guys can agree or disagree with them. I'm open to further conversation. And because this is very self-indulgent, I realized after writing this that I may or may not make Yuu the main character. What I'm saying is that I may or may not give my choices of Yuu a bigger role than in the game. Like, some have an entire character development for a one-off mc. This is what happens when you daydream about the plot too much lol. All the Yuu here are first-year age, or at least around that, like Yuuken and Yuuka. So, unfortunately, there are no adults or tiny children.

So, without further ado, here's my wish list for future Manga Yuu for each Episode.

Octavinelle Arc

Once the Discord group I'm in is talking about some reader expectations on future Manga Yuu. Someone sent an ask to my friend saying that they (the asker) want an overweight Yuu to show that you can be happy even if you're overweight. Now, there is no problem with this and it is a good message. However, I don't think it suits the story of Octavinelle.

Like, if I have to guess this Overweight Yuu plot, is that Yuu was also bullied because of their appearance but managed to come out as a happy child. This is a great message. But, here's the thing: Azul is already happy. Yes, he's no longer a chubby octopus, but he's now a happy teen. If this is about self-acceptance, and both Overweight Yuu and Azul are comfortable in their own path of happiness, then what is there to challenge? What does Overweight Yuu bring to the table other than representation (and possibly pandering wokeness)? Again, I’m not saying Overweight Yuu is bad, I’m all support. It’s only the matter of execution. And we’re living in a timeline where “representation” in media being more important than storytelling, you can’t blame me for having fear of the worst.

We need to go back to Octavinelle Arc. The main story the Octavinelle is Azul scamming many student is signing a contract, making them his servants, and it's up to Yuu to save them (well, mostly your close friends). While body image is a struggle for Azul, that's not the main conflict of Octavinelle. Azul was bullied as a kid and that resentment kept growing along with his skill. When he becomes, basically, above everyone else, he uses that power to scam people. In short, Azul is a bully victim who becomes a bully. And that's the key. Azul is doing all of this, working hard to be better not because he wants to be better, but as an act of revenge toward his bullies first and foremost.

That's why I don't think the Overweight Yuu and the self-acceptance theme might work in terms of narrative.

But that’s not saying we can’t have an Overweight Yuu. However, the overweight-ness is not the main focus. What I think might be a good theme to challenge Azul is revenge and redemption.

So, I offer a Former Bully Yuu.

Just like how Yuuken is the calm leader compared to Riddle being easy to anger, and Yuuka hardworking compare to Leona's laziness, I offer someone who switches roles: Azul previously was a bullying victim now become a bully, and Yuu who was a bully once but now defends those in need.

I imagine Former Bully Yuu as someone who looks tough, maybe part of a gang once, but turns out to have a heart of gold. Maybe something happened that made them stop their bullying and actually try to be good. Or maybe they're still struggling to mend their mistake but people still see the bully in them. Going to Twisted Wonderland might be a blessing because they can start a new leaf with a brand new image. They might even have a closer bond with Deuce for their similar past. And if Deuce said he can relate to Azul, the Former Bully Yuu can do too.

When Octavinelle Arc starts, Former Bully Yuu knows the signs almost immediately and maybe even call out at Azul's behavior. Thus, there's a conflict between the two main players and Former Bully Yuu becomes determined to save their friends.

This actually might also open the possibility of having Yuu that's not a good kid in the beginning. Yuuken and Yuuka are good kids, but having an actual (albeit former) bad Yuu as an MC gives a chance for an unlikable protagonist who actually grows through the story even if it's just in one manga.

For this Yuu, I actually prefer if they're a female for a few reasons. One, because Yuu can be any gender, and two, I just really want a really bad bitch. I've seen so many good girl Yuu in the fandom, so why not a former bad girl Yuu. And just, really, I want to see a woman make mistake and actually own it unlike many modern 'strong female characters'.

Scarabia Arc

Same as the previous section, someone sent an ask to my friend that they (the asker) want a hijabi Yuu. However, once again there's nothing wrong with this request, like before, what does this bring to the narrative? What does Hijabi Yuu bring to the table other than representation (and possibly pandering wokeness)? Also, Najma doesn't wear a hijab, so why not Yuu too?

When we talk about hijabi, we often connect it with religion. But Scarabia Arc is never about religion. Scarabia Arc is about rebellion and freedom, of a servant challenging his fate and authority, to topple down he who basically owns you. What can Hijabi Yuu challenge from this?

But there is another, more disgusting, way. That Hijabi Yuu is struggling with their religion, thus wanting to break free just like Jamil. I sincerely hope that this is not the route they're taking. Going down this route feels like you're mocking us. While I'm not a Muslim myself, growing up in the country with the largest Muslim population, I know how important religion and tradition are for us. My friends are not oppressed by their religion. They are proud and this is their act of being fateful to God.

The bottom line, like Overweight Yuu, I don’t want Hijabi Yuu to be there just for representation brownie points, but has a bigger role. We can still have Hijabi Yuu, but their hijab or being Muslim is not their main trait.

Going back to Scarabia Arc, I think we can play around with the idea of freedom. Technically, we're not challenging Jamil's concept of freedom directly but opening another window. However, I do admit that this is a tricky arc to tackle. So, I kinda offer two routes.

Going down the classic route, the first one is the Rich Kid Yuu.

Listen. I'm not a rich kid myself, so I can get this wrong.

I actually imagine Rich Kid Yuu is born into a prestigious family, maybe even a billionaire. Rich Kid Yuu is the heir of this company thus they're raised to be the next leader. They attend the best school, has many tutors, and is living to their parent's expectation. However, the stress finally caught up to them and they realized that "Wait, when can I take a break?" and seeing other kids their age they wondered why can't they be free like them with no rules and responsibility. Going to Twisted Wonderland is their escapism and dream come true.

Yes, this is similar to Riddle's story, but that's why it might work. If Jamil wants to be free from being under Kalim's shadow while Rich Kid Yuu is freed from their family ties. They understand where Jamil is coming from for while they don't share the same background, the longing for freedom is mutual. However, I also imagine Jamil sees Rich Kid Yuu the same as Kalim, albeit less annoying. So how do we challenge Jamil?

I think it might be more efficient if Jamil meets someone from the same level. That's when the second option is here. Coming from the opposite spectrum is Poor Kid Yuu.

Now, this is closer to home. While I myself is not living in poverty, my family once went through some financial trouble. But I might get this wrong as well.

Poor Kid Yuu might be similar to Azul but at least they're not doing it out of spite. Poor Kid Yuu was born into a poor family or a working-class or family with lots of debt, thus money became sacred to them. They're the type who would count their blessing and a hard worker in school, the top of the class because they're aiming for the scholarship. I think they might be the ones who would actually panic and try to find their own way out of Twisted Wonderland, every day wondering what's their family's fate.

This is where Jamil got challenged. Jamil is tied to his role as a servant while Poor Kid Yuu is tied to their financial problem. Both want to be free from that, but Jamil picks the rebellion road while Poor Kid Yuu picks the peaceful hard work road. Maybe, instead of Jamil being challenged, Poor Kid Yuu is the one getting their ideal challenged. With force, Jamil can secure a brief victory while the years Yuu has spent these years and no result in escaping poverty. Being a good guy, Poor Kid Yuu proves their resolve, choosing the long hard yet truthful way than cheating their way to success.

For this one, any gender is fine. Actually, it might be stronger if we have a female Yuu for the Rich Kid Yuu. Mostly I want the "girlboss who actually does girlboss stuff and deserves the recognition" representation.

Pomefiore Arc

Outside of Octavinelle and Scarabia Arc, I haven't really seen any hardcore speculation for Pomefiore Arc. I think the first choice would be a manager since we're entering the idol/school festival arc. I actually agree with this one. Having a Manager Yuu might actually give Yuu a chance to participate the practice even more than in canon. Like Vil giving Yuu the responsibility in the schedule, their diet, and the accommodation. Which means, we'll be getting a Yuu who is more mature than the rest, someone who has the skill and experience in group management.

But let's also see what Pomefiore Arc is about. Outside the school festival, I'll be taking one of the main elements, which is looking for (social) validation. Like, comment, subscribe, kudos, bookmark, and reblog. Everything us content creator is, like it or not, striving for. Our relationship with our followers is precious to us. But it can backstab you. You'll be looking for their validation and the parasocial relationship will grow. At least that's what I went through. Vil is also the same. He needs social validation, he needs that beauty rank to see what's his worth. The thing is, he knows his skill, he knows what he's capable of, but what is the use if nobody is there to support you? We often say that we draw/write/create content because we love it, but we also want to be recognized so it doesn't feel like we're talking to a brick wall.

I want to offer two Yuus. The first one is the Struggling Content Creator Yuu or maybe just CC Yuu for short.

This Yuu can either be an artist, a writer, a YouTuber, a Twitch streamer, a vlogger, a blogger, anything. They are a content creator on the internet. But note the 'struggling' part. Before going to Twisted Wonderland, CC Yuu is hitting rock bottom in their craft, like having a writer blog, a burnout, declining subscribers, anything. Or the opposite, they're striving in their craft and they're the internet darling, to the point of parasocial relationship with their follower and want to please them. Basically, Yuu is your young content creator. But, I'm going down the rock bottom CC Yuu.

Basically, CC Yuu has been wrung dry. They have no more content and the thing they used to love feels like a chore. Maybe they didn't get much like or reblog, making them feel like they're talentless. And going to Twisted Wonderland just make that feeling worse, because not only do you have a real celebrity like Vil, who seemingly can do anything perfectly, as the only magicless kid in this goddamn school, they're useless.

I imagine CC Yuu as someone who is bitter and jealous (once again going down the Yuu not being the best kid route), who looks down on themselves and wants to quit. This might be the only Yuu in the list who I think might actively hate a character, in this case, Vil, for a personal reason when Vil doesn't do anything wrong. Just standing next to him cause irritation in them because he's oh so perfect. I mean, don't we all when we first play TWST? Don’t we all hate Vil because he’s a mean girl?

The overblot was a slap for them, showing that Vil also went through the same struggles. Maybe post-Overblot, CC Yuu and Vil can have a talk and CC Yuu just vent and Vil understand them, maybe contacting people he knows that might help boost. CC Yuu is clearly not cures from their burnout, but the feeling is starting to grow. Maybe they could grab the pen again when they go home...

I know this is not every content creator’s struggle, but you can’t really just pull every artist problems and put it in a character. That’s why I’m more focusing of the burnout from the lack of follower response and jealousy of Vil who looks perfect.

On the other side of the spectrum, we have the classic Theater Kid Yuu.

This Yuu is very loud, very obnoxious, sometimes overconfident, has an infectious laugh, looks like a goofball, and you'll either like them or hate them. Theater Kid Yuu stands in the spotlight and likes to be at the center of attention. The theater has been a large part of their life, maybe to the point it's his basic personality. Their goal is to make everyone smile, to leave a lasting impression, so nobody forgets about them.

But I also imagine Theater Kid Yuu being the kindest of them all. Being in the theater can develop one’s attention to detail, especially subtle gestures. They could decipher when someone is sad, angry, or happy. If irritation appears on people's faces when they're around, then Yuu would slowly pull themselves away.

They're also very open to criticism since that's a way to grow in their craft. However, that would also mean they would also take hateful comments. Theater Kid Yuu would still take it with a smile. They will take those into their self-reflective moment and try to find a way to make the bonds less hurtful.

With this, I feel like Theater Kid Yuu will be the first one to notice Vil's struggle. Being in the entertainment industry is almost the same as theater, thus they vaguely know the routine. They would notice Vil keeps asking Mira and Vil first crumbles when Neige performs. Theater Kid Yuu will try to be friends with Vil, because they are kind and no actor can perform without their crew, thus Vil should have someone as well.

For these Yuu, I don’t have a preferable gender. I’m more used with male for Theater Kid Yuu, but anything is fine.

Ignihyde & Diasomnia Arc

Now you must be wondering why I lump these two arcs together. Well, not only because Diasomnia Arc is still ongoing, most of the Yuu that I pick for these arcs can somehow be switched around. One of the themes I decided to pick for these two arcs is the concept of time and family. Both Idia and Malleus struggle with the loss of (or in the process of losing) someone they are close. Idia lost his brother and to this day still being haunted by his death. Malleus is in the process of losing Lilia, who had been with him since he was a kid, and Yuu, while their meeting was brief left an impact on them. There's also the concept of time with Idia losing the time of being with human Ortho and Malleus racing against Lilia and Yuu's time. Because of these elements I'm focusing on, I'll combine the choices of Yuu I want.

Starting with the easy ones, we have Orphan Yuu.

Orphan Yuu is someone who had lost a family, usually parents. They're living with some relatives or are adopted. Maybe they have a younger sibling who is still alive and they take the role of the main caretaker. With this premise, Orphan Yuu is a kind, loving person who will take care of many they hold dear to their heart. They can cook and clean, a perfect house husband/wife. Their strength is their kindness.

When they're transported to Twisted Wonderland, their first thought is "is my family going to be okay?" Similar to Poor Kid Yuu, Orphan Yuu is one who will do anything to get back home, but they're conflicted. After many overblot, they realized that maybe these kids need a friend who will take care of them. So, they become their safe shelter, opening Ramshackle's door for the weary souls.

Orphan Yuu understand Idia's grief and Malleus' fear. They might be the only one willing to be on Malleus side, even during overblot, but will try to save him as well. They adores Ortho and scolds Idia for his "not so big brother actions". They dote over Grim and is furious to the point of nearly punching Idia when he was taken, only to be stopped by Rook and Epel. "I don't want to lose him too," Orphan Yuu said and Idia gets it.

While there's no preferable gender, I'm leaning toward male for this one, mostly because I really like the kind big brother archetype. And come on, we need at least one very pure guy in this school of villains.

The next one is the classic Sick and Dying Yuu but let's just call it Ill Yuu.

This is actually kinda tricky so I'll keep it short. Mostly because this is also connected to the world-building of Twisted Wonderland. We know that Riddle's mom is a doctor, but can she cure an otherworld common cold? This can open a chance for exploration in in-universe healthcare. But, let's just say, they're no cure for whatever illness Ill Yuu and, as previously said, they're dying. Thus, I can see Ill Yuu as someone who cherishes every second of their life. They want to do everything they can before they die, especially in this other world. They're kind to others because they want to be remembered dearly. They never use their illness as an excuse for every inconvenience but takes full responsibility for their wrong action, making them a very admirable kid.

Ill Yuu might be more effective for Diasomnia Arc, but I don't know if we combine it with Lilia losing his magic, it'll be too repetitive for the plot. For Idia, maybe he can see Ill Yuu and think back to Ortho and his sudden death. Maybe Idia can help in granting Yuu's wishes and make sure Ortho become close to them because nobody should leave the world without anybody holding their hand and whispering "goodbye". Idia won't go through a painful loss again. At least this time, he can prepare in losing a friend. The grief can come later.

No preferable gender for this one.

Now the last two types are even trickier to pull off and can honestly make or break a story.

The third Yuu for this is Apathetic Yuu.

Now this is actually pretty tricky to pull. There are many 'calm, cool, and collected' anime characters, we even have some in TWST in the form of Silver and Malleus. When I say it's tricky because I don't really want a badass Yuu. I want a Yuu who has a straight face. No witty comment, no secretly a genius, no manipulative attitude. They're just there, existing but without any emotion. Apathetic Yuu is struggling in finding their feeling again that once died. No hobbies, no interest (or maybe they have a special interest but they don't look like they're smiling). It's like they're an empty shell who is somehow still alive.

So, why put this type in a story where family love is strong? Well, like Former Bully Yuu and CC Yuu, this can be Apathetic Yuu's journey in emotional growth. Seeing how Idia and Malleus are willing to do everything to keep their family alive might stir something in them. Maybe the moment when Grim was taken and Ace and Deuce got hurt was the first time Apathetic Yuu ever widened their eyes in shock. At first, maybe they felt scared by this sudden emotion, but with reassurance from Lilia, since he's the most mature, Apathetic Yuu learns more. I don't have any preferable gender for this type since we can pull blank-stare characters in anime.

The last one is actually a type I'm actually excited about. I'll be calling it Desconstruction Otome View Yuu or Otome Yuu for short.

Okay. Hear me out.

You know about the whole "many people think that TWST is an otome game" and we often joke how "characters forget that they're not in an otome game"? Let's take all of those and put them in Otome Yuu.

This Yuu is ecstatic to be in Twisted Wonderland, especially for the hot boys. For every interaction they have with the boys, they take it as a romantic gesture. They're sighing and blushing. They're treating this as an otome game, knowing all the strategies and sweet actions. Heck, maybe make them an otaku, but I doubt Idia dares to get close to someone as forward as Otome Yuu. But really, they're just very naive and innocent. They mean no harm but can come off as annoying.

So, where does the deconstruction happens? Well, I can only see this work in Diasomnia. With Malleus being the poster boy, thus the main "love interest", Otome Yuu pursued him the hardest. It'll depend on Malleus whether he's comfortable or not. And when the a quarter way has passed, Otome Yuu (and maybe Malleus) think that love might solve their problem. So, they kiss...but nothing happens. Malleus is not cured of whatever crisis he's having. Lilia is not no longer dying. Everything is still a mess. And that's when Otome Yuu's rose color glasses started to slip off.

Like Former Bully Yuu, CC Yuu, and Apathetic Yuu, Otome Yuu has a chance to grow. To learn to read the situation and don't just carelessly see this as a romance game. Not everything can be solved through the power of love. I feel like they might get into an identity crisis and have heavy self-reflection. Looking back to many of their- interactions with the other boys and point out whether they are times when the boys are uncomfortable with them. Otome Yuu started to respect them, not as romanceable characters or potential boyfriends but as actual people who have a life outside of them. They become humble, more understanding, and less naive. And when Malleus goes overblot, Otome Yuu is there not to save him as the climax in their romance route, but as a friend who is ready to risk their life for him.

That's the deconstruction. The otome route is my biggest fear when Yuuka arrives. But at least at first glance, she doesn't seem to be someone who is overly romantic. So, if we ever have an MC who is very romantic, I kinda want to see them not getting the boy of the chapter. Again, TWST is not an otome game, so why are we treating it as one?

This Yuu has to be 100% female. While I don't mind male Yuu and taking the hopelessly romantic gay route, but as I said, this is a deconstruction of the otome genre, thus I'm leaning toward the female Yuu. But also, I really want to see a male-female friendship that doesn't end with romance.

Conclusion:

Like many, I have a wish list of what I kinda want for future Yuu in the manga adaptation. A lot of you probably won't agree with this list, but that's the point of a wish list. It is something I kinda want to see, but I'm not sad if they don't come true. I'll be looking forward to Yuuken, Yuuka, and any future Yuu in the next installments. Remember, all Yuu matters.

Vargas will personally request Soni to bring Lukas (and any other fighting types that she might have) with her to the Vargas Camp. I just know it

Note: For the sake of keeping this spoiler-free for the future, I'm just going to have Lukas here. As with all events in TWST, this is non-canon as I cannot figure out how to implement them into the story. This is written for fun, I hope you enjoy it!

When Soni gets to the outdoors in the event itself, she is thriving in this environment.

She's been on a journey for years in the wilderness and has been freer there than she'd ever felt in her life before in the city; her dad, Zavier Monet, somewhat taught her the things that a Trainer needed to know for the outdoors

Basically, she was ready to rumble in the wilderness

With the tent being set up in a few minutes, Lukas is already putting together the firewood and such; Soni's already got a roaring fire and food is being prepared

Everyone there is just like "How are you this fast-?"

Soni's living her best and in the early parts of the school year, her Pokemon had hunted wild game for them to eat.

When the Curry is cooked with all the fixings, even though the others ate their fish dishes, it smells really good

Ace sneaks over to get some before Deuce does the same; Soni knows how much those two love food, so she unconsciously made extra just for them and for Grim's unending hunger

Lukas brings them back to their groups with a huff; he carries Grim by the scuff of his neck to prevent him from eating everything

Soni begins to do her job for the event with Rotophone, although Coach Vargas is focused on trying to spar with Lukas who is amused by the challenge and goes to assist Soni

Keep in mind that the others don't have their Pokemon Partners with them, so Happiny, Morpeko, etc. are not here

When Ace goes missing, Soni's immediately like "Oh Arceus, why do I have a bad feeling about this?"

Even when everyone says that it's fine, Soni has an inkling about what will happen, but she's not buying it

Just like in every horror movie, when Leona and eventually Deuce go missing, Soni's like "Okay, let's move closer so we don't die in the woods and reincarnate into Phantumps."

When that one unknowing soul asks her what Phantumps are, despite everyone else looking at him like an idiot:

Soni: "Oh, they're cute little Pokemon that are Grass and Ghost type. They're created when spirits enter stumps and as per usual, they are possessed by the souls of children lost in the woods."

That Poor Unfortunate Soul: "Oh."

Soni: "If you hear the sound of a child in the woods, there's a good chance that it might be a Phantump or another Ghost Pokemon. Adults who get lured by their cries get terribly lost."

Everyone realized that they were in the middle of a forest with little to no help: 😨 "WHY DID YOU ASK THAT?"

Soni: "Phantumps are honestly quite cute-"

Everyone: "THEY ARE THE SPIRITS OF DEAD CHILDREN-!"

Soni: "Exactly, which is why it's cute that whenever they find friends, they get super excited."

The way that Soni says it so calmly too just makes them think, "Dammit, why is it so terrifying?! Is this really common knowledge?!"

Not exactly, but you're not wrong, mob students.

Eventually, when Soni gets taken away, everyone's terrified about what happened because how in the world did she get captured?!

Lukas is ready to pummel someone, although he doesn't really listen to the remaining students until Jack spoke up about needing his assistance to find his Trainer and to help her

Lukas agreed as that had been the one thing that he'd been training for as long as he had been with Soni

Speeding through to the reveal of Coach Vargas, everyone was doing the headcount and discovered that Deuce was actually missing

Soni brought everyone went into the mines, although she was ready this time around to do some battling if something truly terrible happened.

Then the monster appeared.

Soni has Lukas do the most in destroying him through close range while the others helped out in deterring the monster.

Deuce was on the verge of too much Blot and Soni made sure to record what happened because this couldn't be a coincidence at this rate

The first Overblot Monster she ever encountered was in this cave and now this one?

When the monster was defeated and Soni showed all the evidence against the skeptical Coach Vargas with pictures and video to match, that's when things got serious

Soni defended Deuce's absence because if he hadn't tried to hide, the consequences would've been disastrous for him; she's not hiding the fact that he could've died

Even with the Headmaster and the evidence, the training camp was over and the others were safe

In the end, Deuce was subjected to recovery due to what happened

The other Heartslabyul students who were on the trip gave him time to recover, thus leading to him just staying in Heartslabyul

Ace and Soni did their best to comfort him with lessons that he missed while taking care of him alongside Happiny

Soni: "Here's your favorite, an Omelet Rice Set with a Side Salad, Mixed Berries and Nuts, and some simple Egg Drop soup topped with green onions."

Deuce sees the food and swallows his saliva: "P-Prefect, you don't need to do this."

Happiny climbs up to Deuce and taps his face with her hand: "Hap Happiny!" No, let Mama do this for you!

Soni: "You were literally stuck there for a day or more without food or water. If I have to feed you by hand, I will. Unless you want Happiny to do it."

Deuce fed himself the food- it was delicious as always

Ace and Grim were in classes for once doing notes because Soni told them to do so since she was in charge of Deuce's recovery as a request from the Headmaster himself

One of the very few times that she willingly took on the job without complaints

Just everyone helping Deuce and making sure that he'd be okay from this experience

...is stoked to have an excuse to get out of Heartslabyul for a night. He’s had it up to about here with Riddle’s dumb ol’ rules and curfew~

Wants to have a competition to see who can stay up the latest (Ace insists that he will win).

Will eat all of your snacks, no doubt about it. Keep your chips and popcorn out of his reach if you want anything to share with the other boys!

When the time comes to pick a movie to watch or a co-op game to play, Ace will call first dibs. He thinks that he has great taste!

Wins almost every single card and board game you play. Ace has an amazing memory...and some tricks up his sleeve that you don’t know about!

In truth or dare, he always picks dare. Ace is also a little shit about it and teases anyone that picks truth (especially Deuce).

Snores loudly in his sleep and kicks Grim by accidentally while he’s turning over.

Deuce Spade...

...tags along with Ace because a sleepover sounds really fun!

Brings a chick plushie with him. Deuce says it was a gift from his mom when he got accepted into NRC and that he calls it Peko-chan (Ace is rolling his eyes and calling it lame).

Gets emotional and sniffles loudly when you watch a movie, no matter how light hearted it is.

Tries to eat and move around with food as little as possible; Deuce is afraid of spilling something and ruining furniture if he doesn’t tread carefully. He doesn’t want to mess up your home!

Not the best at any card or board games, but he tries his best and has a lot of fun while playing. In a pillow fight, however, Deuce’s delinquent side comes out and he just goes nuts on his friends, letting pillows fly.

He ends up falling asleep around the same time as Ace! All that bickering must have tired the two of them out.

Jack Howl...

...is concerned that the sleepover will disrupt his otherwise productive Saturday.

At first, Jack tries to sit in the corner and study, but he’s constantly distracted by Ace and Deuce disagreeing about what movie to watch while Sebek tries to get them to calm the hell down (by shouting, which only further escalates the situation). Jack has no choice but to put his books down and join in on the chaos fun!

He’s a little grumpy, sitting there with arms crossed and staring intensely at the others doing...whatever it is they are doing. However, as the night passes on, Jack finds himself laughing along to a silly movie and munching on popcorn.

Hands down, the pillow fight champion.

He tries to get everyone to go to sleep at a reasonable time, but to no avail. They end up talking late into the night, while Jack mostly responds in grunts and terse comments.

Because of his sensitive wolf ears, Jack cannot fall asleep until Ace, Deuce, and Sebek have (otherwise their arguing would keep him up). Ultimately, Jack is the last to bed.

Epel Felmier...

...is over the moon and the stars to have an escape from Pomefiore, even if it is only for a single night!

As soon as he’s through the door, Epel slips into his rough country accent. He shit talks complains about his life in Pomefiore to all of his friends.

Dumps out a bag of fancy looking bottles, tubes, and tubs, telling everyone that they are a nighttime skincare routine that Vil insisted he bring with him, or else he would not let Epel leave. The boys spend a while picking each item up to observe (Sebek), sniffing them (Jack), and slathering samples on their faces (Ace slapped some onto Deuce, Deuce retaliated).

Refuses to pick truth; ALWAYS goes for dare.

Epel’s got about a hundred and one urban legends and myths to share from his home town--but the scariest story he knows of, Epel insists, is about a wrinkled, naggy hag that haunts the halls of Pomefiore.

Happily accepts Ace’s challenge to see who stays up the latest, only to be one of the first to fall asleep.

Sebek Zigvolt...

...was hesitant to join the sleepover to begin with. The only reason he’s here is because Lilia commanded him to “liven up” a little and to “enjoy his youth”.

Tries to control the situation but not his volume. He forces himself between Ace and Deuce to get them to stop their arguments.

Definitely the “mom friend” of the group. Sebek reminds everyone to not eat too many snacks (”You must have proper food!”) and to brush their teeth and wash their faces before retiring for the night.

Takes the conversation a little too seriously, often interrupting a story to give his two cents or to question a logical fallacy. (”How does a headless horseman even see to begin with?!”)

Counters every single one of Epel’s scary stories with a long, drawn out speech about one of Malleus’s virtues.

Falls asleep once the problem children (Epel, Ace, and Deuce) have. His voice finally quiets as he drifts off to dream land.

" Please marry me!" Epel said, " Darx I challenge you for the bride's hand,"

" Don't look at someone else. Please marry me!" Ace shouted, " Darx I will defeat you,"

"Please... choose me as your marriage partner," Riddle offered, " Darx I shall put a stop too you,"

" Your beauty, I want to be your servant of love forever," Rook smiled, " And I shall rescue you from this brute,"

Far out at sea loomed a dark storm cloud that slowly made its way towards the island of Night Raven College. A figure sat on the back of a mighty griffin in the eye of the storm, it groaned, cried as it tried to thrash against reigns. The man growled as he sharply pulled on the reins.

"Quiet pet, I hear that there is a beautiful maiden at Night Raven College. And from what I've seen on the magical, she is quite the sight," The figure sighed, " Though I wished she had more of a presence, instead of uploaded photo's from this Cater guy."

"Master, can I come with you this time?" Inir asked excitedly, " I promise to be careful this time?"

"I have a feeling you to come for other reasons," Y/n sighed.

"N-no," Inir stuttered.

"You want another playdate with Ortho don't you?" Y/n smirked at her newer creation.

"No- yeah, but he's so fun to hang out with and I promise I'll be careful and try not to break myself like last time," Inir begged.

"Inir you broke yesterday from the game of tag, and I spent all night gluing you back together, and I had to reapply the marks that keep you together," Y/n yawned as she took a sip of coffee.

"PLEASE!?" Inir begged.

"Morning Ace-san, "Inir greeted.

"Oh Inir, I see y/n put you back together, " Ace smiled.

"yep cause she's the best, " Inir smiled.

"Morning," Yawned a tired Y/n.

"Wow you look awful today, did you get any sleep?" Ace asked.

"No, and I didn't feel like arguing with Inir today. Have you seen Idia or Ortho? " Y/n sighed.

"Yeah, I think-"

"Inir!" Shouted a young voice, and a flash of white and blue.

"There he is?" Y/n yawned.

"Hi, Ortho, " Inir Smiled as she hugged to robot boy, " is Idia outside today?"

"No, just me, but I saw that you were in school so I came over to play some more," Ortho said with a cheery smile, " If that's okay with Y/n, "

"Just please be gentle, I don't think I can handle another all-nighter to fix Inir," Y/n said tiredly.

"Okay," they both said as they ran off.

(Location- courtyard)

"Are you sure you're going to make it through the day?" Duece asked with a worried tone as he helped Y/n walk straight.

"I can't fall behind-behind on.. on the," Y/n nodded off.

"Prefect Y/n, what in the world happened to you," Said a very smooth voice.

"Oh no," Y/n groaned as she looked up to see Vil staring down at her.

"Y/n have you slept at all, you have bags under your eyes, and your skin looks all dried up," Vil said as he poked and prodded at her face.

"I had to put Inir back together, so no sleep," Y/n said simply.

"Oh no, you shouldn't push yourself. You'll ruin your health," Rook gasped at the sight of Y/n's tired face.

"Epel please Take Y/n back to her dorm to get proper rest," Vil said simply.

Epel nodded and Helped Y/n back to the ramshackle dorm to rest. The moment Y/n rested her head she was out like a light.

The night quickly came and Y/n found it hard to sleep knowing that her sleep was very thrown off, so she decided to take a night stroll around the school. As she made her way to the main route of the great 7. As she walked past the statues she noticed a familiar shut-in heading her way.

"Oh, good evening Mr. Idia," Y/n smiled as she curtsied slightly.

"Ahh! O-oh it's you Y/n. good evening, but what are you doing up so late?" Idia stuttered.

"My sleep is completely out of wack, so I'm just walking around. What are you up too, must be something important," Y/n wondered aloud.

"I've ordered my favorite manga's newest print... along with the spacial mini colored papers, but why is it not delivered by the release date!?" Iida ranted.

"M-Manga? Is this related to the anime thing you talk about?" Y/n asked.

"Manga is the book version of anime," Idia explained.

"Oh, well sorry to hear that, it must be a good piece of literature," Y/n frowned for Idia.

"It's a shame as an otaku to not get it on the first date. There's nobody around too, I'm going to the shop," Idia sighed.

But suddenly lightning flashed in the sky and a strong wind blew past Y/n and Idia.

"...ound you...," said a distant voice.

"Eh?" Idia and Y/n gasped.

"Just now... someone's voice?" Idia wondered.

" I finally... found you... My Bride!" Said a tall man with a black blindfold over his eyes.

"GYAA———!!!!!" Idia screamed while Y/n gasped in shock.

"Grim, GRIM!" The fairy trio shouted.

Grimm gasped awake and quickly glared at the three.

"What?!" Grimm groaned.

"Y/n's missing! and the ghost has invaded!" Zephyr shouted as three ghosts appeared.

"Whoa!?" Grimm screamed.

" You dirty rats! What are you doing here!" One of the ghosts shouted, " This mansion is the Masters' reception hall. It's off-limits for outsiders!"

"Master?! Reception hall??. I don't get it, but it's my dorm. The outsiders are you guys!" Grimm growled.

"If you won't go out, you'll be in trouble," The ghosts glared, " Go out now or you'll be hurt!"

The Ghosts quickly tossed Grimm and the other creatures out of the dorm. Grimm growled as he ran over to the headmaster's office to report the incident.

"Your dorm got possessed by ghosts with white hats?" Crowley asked.

"That's right! They appeared and suddenly said that the dorm was theirs! They said something about a master too!" Grimm growled.

" Master... ah, I get it! There was nobody in that dorm last year so I let it be, but... It seems like he has come this year again," Crowley sighed.

"Again?" Vinca asked.

" The ones who chased you out was Darx's vassal" Crowley groaned.

"Darx? Who's that? I don't know if I'm supposed to be congratulating or scared," Grimm wondered.

" It seems like she was a princess of a country that was destroyed long ago. Darx is currently the world's most powerful wizard and a very narcissistic one too. He travels the world in search of a perfect partner to bear his children, wanting powerful children. He had many weddings, yet his brides always go missing after a month. Sometimes he rests at Ramshackle Dorm as appointed to be their basecamp. It's an honor for that place to be recognized by a powerful wizard," Crowley explained.

" It's not the time to brag! Chase those annoying ghosts away quickly!" Grimm growled.

" It's too annoying to chase them... ahem! Don't you think it's pitiful? Let's just leave them alone, plus I don't want to get on Darx's bad side for no good reason. besides no bride will be found here," Crowley laughed, " It only affects Ramshackle Dorm. And they'll go away after a few days. Stop those useless protests and just freeload on your friend's place for 2-3 days, wait where's Y/n?"

" Headmaster—!!!!!!!" Ortho and Inir cried.

"Oh, Ignihyde's Ortho Shroud-Kun and Inir of Ramshackle. What are you two in a hurry for?" Crowley

"It's a problem... my brother and Prefect Y/n were taken by a strange man!" Ortho cried.

"What?!" everyone gasped.

"Right Check out this security video," Ortho said as he projected a video.

"Hey! Please don't hack the school's security system!" Crowley scolded.

"shh, be quiet and watch the video!" Inir shushed.

"So that man is," Grimm gulped.

"Yep, that man is Darx, and he found a bride!" Crowley gasped.

"And the Bride is Y/n!" Ora gasped in horror.

"Well she indeed a beautiful maiden and a powerful witch on top of that, fitting his criteria," Crowley mumbled.

"Yep, she is also kind and caring. Dame you Darx, what precise eyes you have!" Inir growled.

"Anyway, it seems like we have trouble, If she's chosen to be Darx bride, then that means," Crowley gasped.

Suddenly they were interrupted by all the commotion happening in the halls. They ran out to see what was going on, and to find the halls were overrun with ghosts and monsters. All the students ran out of the school to the track field, the only safe place for the student body.

"Isn't it Ace and Deuce, did you come to the sports field to evacuate too?" Riddle said simply.

"You guys got chased out too?" Deuce asked.

"Yep looks like Darx is up to something," Vil sighed in annoyance.

"Wait Grimm, Where is Y/n?" Azul asked.

"She's been taken by Darx!" Inir cried.

"What?!" everyone gasped in horror.

"It's true," Ortho said as he explained what had happened last night.

Bring on the Mania! pt. 5

For the next two hours, they played various board games. Although there were some they had to stop halfway, such as Twister. Whenever Amane would hover one of the boys, he would gently nip on anything he could get his mouth on. This caused them to either; shudder under him, or lose balance and fall. They finally stopped when Amane tried to nibble on Epel's neck, the said boy knee him on the gut out of surprise. Lisha couldn't stop laughing at him.

Another was Old maid. Ace and Grim kept on cheating, which resulted in an argument; it would have gone physical if Valerie hadn't slapped them in the back of their heads. She then scolded them like children. They would have protested if Lisha wasn't in front of them, glaring and waiting for them to give her reason to peck them.

So here they are, playing monopoly with Ace, Jack, and Sebek taking the lead. Valerie and Deuce were tied, with Epel behind them and Amane and Grim in jail.

"This game sucks!" Grim cried out in frustration. "This isn't fair! I am the great and powerful Grim! How could I lose so many times!?"

"Not my fault you suck so hard." Ace snickered at the enraged monster.

"It's just a game; no need to throw a tantrum." Sebek remarked. Grim growled in response.

The fae took the dice, and it rolled into a four, making him ahead of everyone else. The game continued with no more complaints, but an occasional grumble from Grim. It ended with Jack being the winner.

Amane covered his, mouth letting out a yawn. All these games were boring him; he needed excitement, something to get his blood pumping. He glanced at the pillows, then an idea popped in his head.

"Hey Val, could you get me some water?" He asked the girl when he saw her standing up.

"Sure, Amane."

He smirked internally. He waited till Valerie was a few meters away from him.

Then, he struck.

The young brunette stopped in her tracks when she felt something soft collided with her back. Behind her, she could hear the cackles of a demon.

"Aw, what's wrong Vally? Can't take a hit? I know you were pampered by these boys but to this extent? Damn." He jeered, unaware of the petrified looks the rest of the boys had.

"Amane, you shouldn't have done that." Jack hissed. He cast his eyes to the girl, who slowly turned to face them.

Amane waved his hand dismissively. "Oh, it's fine. She can take it; it's just a pill-OW!"

The hetero-eyed male was suddenly knocked down to the floor. He painfully sat up and rubbed his face; it felt like a brick hit him. He looked down; it was the same pillow he used on Valerie. Slowly, he lifted his head.

Valerie had a soft smile on her face; that completely contradicted the look in her eyes. There was a fierce glint; excitement and viciousness danced within it. Then, she spoke in a soft but firm voice.

"I accept your declaration of war."

The poor man felt two pairs of hands grab his arms, dragging him all the way to the other room. On the way, he saw the rest of the guys carrying dozens of pillows in their arms.

"You boys better get ready. Cause when I get like this: mercy doesn't exist."

Her words left a cold feeling within their bodies. It sounded so sickeningly sweet it could have been poison.

They finally let Amane go once they deemed themselves secured and scolded the demon.

"Are you insane!? Do you realize what you did!?" Ace screamed at his face. Being shorter, he grabbed his shirt and brought him down to his eye level. Letting Amane get a clear view of his aggravated cherry-red eyes.

"U-Uh...W-What did I do?" Amane stammered.

"Throwing that pillow at her!" Grim snapped.

"I was joking-" The incubi tried to defend himself but was cut off.

"Joke or not, she will finish what you started; and she'll make it as painful as possible." Epel shuddered.

He just stared at them bug-eyed. "What's with you guys? It's just Valerie."

"You don't know Valerie as we do." Sebek chimed in. "To her, this is a declaration of war, one that she will win."

"She's always been competitive; she never goes back at a challenge. No matter how impossible it seems. She's stubborn like that." Jack added.

"Valerie will do whatever it takes to win. She isn't above using physical pain to get it." Deuce explained.

"You saw the way she dug her nails into you to comply with her demand; that should have been your warning." Deuce looked at him expectantly.

He thought back at times when she did that, his body went rigid. The boys nodded knowingly when it all clicked to the midnight haired male.

"Valerie may appear harmless, but she's just as dangerous." Jack continued.

"Oh fuck, what are we going to do?" Panic set in Amane's voice as he thought of dozens of ways that Valerie could torture them.

"Only thing we can do." Ace announced, picking up a pillow, cocking it like a gun.

"Try and survive her reign of terror."

They armed themselves with as many pillows they can hold and slowly creep back into the lounge. Sebek peeked inside, noticing the girl wasn't there; he signaled the rest to follow him.

"Where is she?" Asked Grim.

A sweet giggle answered his question and formed a circle.

"Alright, come out, Val!" Epel hollered. That just earned him more giggles. Everybody raised their pillows, trying to anticipate where she might strike.

"Is she always like this when someone challenges her?" Amane hissed.

"You're lucky a food fight didn't happen today." Sebek shuddered. "It happened last week. So many were lost."

"Ehhh!?"

"He meant that they were in the infirma-RY!" Deuce clarified when a pillow hit his face, hard.

Panic surged through their bodies. Shit, it's starting.

"Ready yourselves! We've got a war to win!"

As soon as those words left Epel's lips, small pink and brown blurs zip through.

Grim was their first target. Lisha swooped to the ground and grabbed the cat monster by her talons.

"GAHH!!" She threw him high enough for Valerie to get a clean hit. The poor monster crashed into the wall, unconscious.

Amane froze in shock at what he witnessed. "Oh, shit."

They scrambled for cover, realizing that their current position left them open. Unfortunately, Valerie was faster.

She nimbly moved her way to Epel, the said boy raised his pillow to strike her, but she threw one at his face. Valerie delivered a swift jab on the gut, causing the boy to clutch his stomach in pain. He didn't get enough time to recover when Valerie smacked a pillow across his face. Just like that, he was out.

Sebek charged at her side, holding his pillow high. However, Lisha flew right in his face, obstructing his view. Sebek could taste Lisha's feathers in his mouth, prompting him to spit some out. Unfortunately, that gave the girl enough time to land a direct kick to his chest. Once he fell on the ground, Valerie dropped another pillow on his face and stomping her foot on it.

However, she was oblivious that Ace and Deuce were at her sides, steadily moving towards her, and prepping their pillows. While the girl continued to stomp Sebek's face, all with a cute but sadistic grin on her face.

A firm but soft force repeatedly hit the opal-eyed girl. Both Heartslabyul students managed to successfully land blows on the girl, while Lisha kept Jack occupied.

"Ouch! Lisha! Not too close to the eyes!" Jack lifted his pillow to shield his face from the strix's wrath.

Valerie winced under hits; though they weren't hard, they were enough to make her head a bit dizzy. Gritting her teeth, she seized both pillows shocking, (and scaring) both boys. She harshly pulled their arms to the opposite directions, making them bash their heads together and fall unconscious.

She stopped to catch her breath when a cruel ache suddenly throbbed a the side of her head, and the next thing she knew, she was on the floor. She hissed from the impact, glancing up she saw Jack glaring down at her.

Apparently, Jack used the Aduece duo as a distraction. The wolf beastman managed to knock Lisha off somewhere far away. The strix wasn't harmed but tired and dizzy from flying circles around him. He snuck up behind her and bashed her head; the force was enough to knock her down.

The girl rolled out of the way; she sprang back on her feet before Jack could smash another pillow on her. Valerie dashed behind a chair. But not before nabbing two pillows.

"Hiding in your hole, Rabbit?" The wolf taunted.

"Better than foolishly getting myself killed." The girl retorted. She peeked over the chair to see Jack watching her. They held their gazes, waiting to make a move.

Out of the corner of his eye, Jack spotted Amane snaking up to the girl. He made no sound and done a decent job getting closer to her.

Closer and closer.

Without even looking behind her, she chucked a pillow at the incubus; the force was enough for him to topple over. Unknowingly for him, he stepped on a cushion prompting him to slip and fall unconscious.

And once again, he was a lone wolf.

Jack bit his lips in irritation at Amane's sorry attempt for an ambush. Whatever happened to that fearsome demon two hours ago?

His ears twitched and muscles tensed up. Something wasn't right. He quickly swerved to the right, narrowly avoiding a kick to the face from the tiny girl.

She landed with a heavy thud on the ground. Valerie wasted no time in grabbing as many pillows as she can; throwing them at the charging wolf. The large male simply dodged them and tackled the girl. He brought her arms above her head and pinned them.

Valerie felt his hot breath on her face. Jack's face was awfully near to hers. His expression was contorted into a sneer, a deep growl rumbled in his chest. His grip on her wrists tightened as if warning her to remain docile.

'As if.' Valerie responded with a glare of her own. She wrapped her legs around him and pushed herself up to nibble on his neck.

Jack could feel a wildfire spread across his face and an uncomfortable feeling forming in his shorts when she rubbed her chest on his own and gave his neck tiny licks. The action alone made the male above froze, and loosen his hold on her.

Snatching her wrists away, Valerie wrapped her arms around his neck. Fingers lightly skimming across his skin, she could feel Jack shivering under her touch before finally found the spot. She dug her fingers harshly on that spot.

The boy above stiffen before his body becoming slack and falling on top of her. Judging by the soft snore, it looks like she found the right pressure point.

Valerie gently lifted his body enough for her to roll out. She gave herself a good stretch before surveying the entire scene and dead bodies before her.

"I win."

A/N: Sorry it took so long to write, I got caught up in school. This also my first attempt to write a fight scene, I hope this was good.

Chapter 21 and 22 Reread

This has been quite delayed, yes. Part of it has been lack of time and headspace, part because I find the initial memory very upsetting and there’s a lot of sad through all of them.

Chapter 21

I have thoughts on the carrion bomb, but they deserve a spoiler post for other things.

Khiaz is grotesque and the only reason she’s not at the top of the hate list is because Kujen exists.

But as a Shuos, she was the heptarch’s property. There was no one she could appeal to.

There’s a lot of in-your-face atrocity in these books, but there’s at least as much that’s quiet and just as terrible.

I need to check this event against timeline. Jedao was just made brigadier-general. He already has a plan that involves planting the idea with Khiaz that he’s terrified of death, which is pointed to as motivation for Khiaz to agree to consign him to the black cradle. But that also implies he already knew about the black cradle at this point? Or did he only have ideas that were more vague and was hedging his bets?

She peeled back one glove and stared at the veins, and the scar across the base of her palm.

Given the context, I think this scar is from a prior suicide attempt.

People knew now that she wanted to sleep with another soldier, forbidden though it was.

Huh. I think I missed some of the implications here orignially. But now I think this bit isn’t about Khiaz directly, but her ratting him out by wearing that uniform and what she let everyone at the party think was going on.

Good on Gized for being angry and protective here, particularly in spite of the fact it’s treasonous in the heptarchate. It’s one of those little notes that, with the right prompt, more people could likely be recruited to the rebellion cause. But Jedao is so scared of having his plan exposed and feels so isolated, I’m not sure he lets himself see these things.

Fangmoths.

Fox-and-hunters - a board game or possibly card game.

The scene with Garit :| Jedao was both cognizant of the audience and trying to encourage the outcome where he was NOT told to move ahead with shooting through children and invalids. We see here both that the Lanterners were responsible for disgusting actions themselves and that the Kel protocol and anticipated heptarchate ‘public opinion’ see no issue with what Jedao is ordered to do. All that would have mattered would have been if there was ‘tactical difficulty’.

We also learn Jedao had always wanted children. There’s also some additional information of allowing only ‘the most glancing affairs’ and avoiding forming attachments.

He had a two day and sixteen hour blackout of memory. Disassociation-based amnesia? And it puts a lie to what he told Cheris about remembering every terrible thing he’d ever done.

Hellspin Fortress - Jedao can’t recognize the corpse that seems to be Gized. Given some things in NG and in HS, I have some suspicions why that is, when he does put names to others. Also, more disassociation here I think.

The Hellspin massacre was planned and not spur of the moment. He’d planted ‘bombs and logic grenades’ during prior inspections in preparation.

The hint is there with his perspective on the Deuce of Gears on his Patterner 52 that signs of a ‘healthy ego’ he displays as expected by the Kel, may largely or entirely be a front. The myth of General Shuos Jedao as they thought he was.

He was suicidal again here, in addition to being largely blank on the emotional front. He ultimately didn’t kill himself because it would have meant the massacre was pointless.

Kujen must have arranged for the moth to put in at that station for repairs. He’d noticed Jedao hacking into things. And here we have confirmation Jedao had learned about Kujen and the fact he was immortal, but that he did not know HOW he was immortal. He’s already a brigadier-general, so this is after the thing with Khiaz. Hmm.

”If you wanted to backstab Khiaz, you should have stayed attached to her office. I mean, from all reports she was very fond of you.” His smile widened when he said that.

Kujen is such utter garbage.

Kujen has realized numerous things: that Jedao wants to bring down the calendar/heptarchate, that he’s been looking for allies, and that he has dyscalculia.

”Nine hundred years ago I invented an allied branch of math to make the mothdrives possible. No one else has successfully pulled of a major calendar shift.”

Jedao thinks of how Kujen came up with remembrances accompanied by ceremonial torture. He realizes at this point that ‘torture had been a design parameter, not an unfortunate coincidence’.

Jedao was good at a lot of things in Academy, such as languages.

Kujen’s voice softened. “You’ve been fighting alone for a long time, Jedao. You never got close to anyone, no affairs that last longer than a couple of weeks. <snip> But I’m better than nothing at all. We can do this together. You won’t have to be alone anymore.”

Did I mention that Kujen is GARBAGE?

”Just what is it that runs in your veins, Jedao?”

I think this is at the crux of a lot of stuff with Kujen in respect to Jedao. He’s bored and fundamentally, he doesn’t GET Jedao. I think it fascinates him on some level, while on another, he wants to make Jedao like himself.

Jedao makes a very hasty decision in this chapter, which I think is a combination of him thinking he can hopefully out maneuver Kujen, but also wanting to not be alone in this, because he IS in a very bad state mentally and prolonged isolation is not good, nevermind all of the other issues he’s struggling with mentally and emotionally. It has made him vulnerable and I’m not sure he recognizes it at this stage.

Hellspin was 3 years after meeting Kujen.

The Aughen ‘heretical faction’: they fought honorably, made few demands, and mainly wanted to be left alone. Some Kel even became sympathetic and some failed their formations. ‘After every battle she ended up executing cowards and deserters’. Jedao thinks of how formation instinct would have gotten more scrutiny if the Liozh were still around when it was brought up, but later, there were not qualms.

The Kel virtue had been loyalty. Formation instinct deprived them of the chance to choose to be loyal.

He’d thought about going over to the Lanterners, but them using children as shields ended that plan. He thinks also of the Liozh, who’d explored the idea of democracy, but wonders if Hellspin is actually what triggered that.

Jedao does recognize that the challenge was really: ‘Creating a functioning, stable, sane society from the heptarchate’s ashes.’

Cheris thinks Jedao provoked the attack from Kel Command because they realized he had someone who could handle high-level calendrical rebellion. I think it was Kujen who was provoked.

Yeren taught Jedao a lot of card tricks. Also she is apparently a second year, while the other two are first years.

Jedao created a game where you scored points by maniuplating people into, for the most part, ‘small’ heresies. These include inverted flower arrangements, which despite being a small phrase suggests she really bad things about any creative expression in the heptarchate.

The heptarchate’s laws were becoming more rigid as the regime became ever more dependent on the high calendar’s exotic technologies.

Even at 18, he recognized that.

Yeren’s very good at hacking.

Ruo liked fruit candies.

I think it’s notable that Jedao’s reaction to Ruo’s death was to immediately distance himself from it, even though as we can see shortly after, being known as the creator of the game didn’t actually get someone in trouble. That wasn’t his motivation. I think this ties back to numerous other things we see from him.

The scene with Sereset tells us that Ruo’s suicide was a catalyst to a plan to bring down the heptarchate. But that Jedao had originally planned to pick a track that made use of a gift for languages.

Jedao’s looked at the ‘numbers’ of heptarchate atrocities and really focused on them, not just blown them off as statistics: Her imagination wasn’t large enough to encompass the deaths, the cities unmade and the books smothered into platitudes, but that wasn’t any reason not to try.

”It wouldn’t be short and it wouldn’t be pretty and you’d end up as much a monster as they are, but maybe it would be worth it to tear the whole fucking structure down.”

HMM. Okay, he knows the black cradle can lead to immortality here, but not how. Knows there needs to be a reason for the heptarchs to want to bring someone back over and over.

Because she had been weak; because she had wanted to talk. She wouldn’t make that mistake again.

This is another very sad scene. He didn’t want to be alone. We see over and over in the books, in so many ways, he didn’t want to be alone. That’s how Kujen got to him. Because what shouldn’t have had to be perceived as a mistake was one, when it was made again with Kujen.

Sensor Sweep: Hammett, Hernstrom, Heinlein, Haggard

Comic Books (Paint Monk): Copyright. Public Domain. Cease & Desist. Not the words one would normally think to associate with a battle featuring Conan of Cimmeria and yet here we are. Now that the smoke has cleared, Ablaze is finally able to deliver translated versions of French Glénat’s Conan comics. Let me see if I can sum it up succinctly. In Europe, most of Robert E. Howard’s works are in the public domain. In the United States?

Publishing (Kairos): There’s a shortage of paper, because it comes from China. The two largest printers of magazines and books in the U.S., Quad/Graphics and LSC Communications were going to merge last summer, but something got in the way. Now, LSC Communications has filed for bankruptcy. The second largest printer, Quad, has shut its book printing facilities entirely. In some regions, major distributors have shut down or disappeared, while although others, like Ingram, are still operating, although with reduced staff.

New Releases (DMR Books): The next DMR Books release is The Eye of Sounnu, the long-awaited collection of Schuyler Hernstrom’s stories from Cirsova magazine. Today we reveal the incredible cover by Brian LeBlanc (who also did the cover for Renegade Swords.) The title of the collection is taken from the cover story, “Gift of the Ob-Men,” which previously appeared in the first issue of Cirsova, as well as the free anthology The Infernal Bargain and Other Stories.

Hard-boiled Fiction (Elgin Bleeker): The Hammett novel, which I posted about (here), is a complicated yarn of murder and political corruption. Nick Beaumont is an advisor and right-hand man to Paul Madvig, a political power broker. In the book, Hammett showed the strong ties between the men who were long-time friends. A lot of that was lost in the 1942 movie starring Alan Ladd as Nick and Brian Donlevy as Paul because the story needed to be trimmed down to fit a movie’s normal running time. (There is also a 1935 version starring George Raft and Edward Arnold, but I have not seen it.)

Pulp Science-Fiction (Adventures Fantastic): OK, I’m gonna do it. With the exception of some of the novels, I’ll be looking at the nominees for the 1945 Retro Hugos, which are awarded for stories published in 1944. I’m going to start with the novelettes. I read “The Children’s Hour” earlier this week as a possibility Henry Kuttner birthday post before the Retro Hugo shortlist was announced. Might as well tackle it while it’s fresh on my mind.

Pulp Fiction (Dark Worlds Quarterly): Edmond Hamilton was a Science Fiction writer who is loved for his Captain Future novels, his Star Kings and any number of other Pulp stories. He was an important innovator of the 1920s and early 30s, as well as one of the best writers of Superman comics in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. But there was this time when Ed wrote Mystery stories for money…Hamilton was one of the first SF writers who tried to make a living writing only Science Fiction and Fantasy. He succeeded for the most part but there were lean years in the Great Depression when he turned to Mystery fiction.

Fiction (Jon Mollison): Is now really the best time to write a post-apocalyptic novel? It is if you know what you are doing. And as a writer, let me assure you – I know what I’m doing. The sad fact is that we already live in a post-apocalyptic world. Sooner than expected, we’ll be tasked with finding a path out of the relative doom that follows the American Empire. And fiction can help us do that. If it is the right kind of fiction.

Fiction (Track of Words): Black Library’s Siege of Terra series reaches its halfway point with Saturnine by Dan Abnett, a 500+ page beast of a book in which secrets are revealed, big names start to fall, and the stakes – somehow – get even higher. Having taken Lion’s Gate spaceport, the traitor host marches on the fortifications of the Lion’s Gate itself while simultaneously driving at the Eternity Gate spaceport, stretching the loyalist defenders to breaking point. With battles raging on multiple fronts and resources dwindling, Dorn faces impossible questions of compromise and sacrifice, as he searches for a strategy that might tip the balance in his battle of wills and wits with Perturabo.

Warhammer (Warhammer Community): This is Warhammer’s biggest plastic monster yet… it towers over a regular gargant and easily stares Archaon and his three-headed mount in their many faces. It’s festooned with details that mark it as a creature of the Mortal Realms, including trinkets from across the various factions and bits of monster – presumably to snack on after battle.

D&D (Boggswood): Both before D&D was written, and long afterward, Dave Arneson stocked his dungeons randomly and he devised different methods and applied different ways to do this. Monsters, for example, he stocked through a random “Protection Point: system. Gold he rolled dice for and items he created random tables for. The best early example is his The Loch Gloomen stocking list from 1972, reprinted in his First Fantasy Campaign booklet.

History and Writers (Frontier Partisans): H. Rider Haggard, an Englishman who had worked for several years in Natal in southern Africa, created one of the the quintessential Frontier Partisan heroes of fiction — white hunter and adventurer Allan Quatermain, hero of King Solomon’s Mines and a whole series of what Deuce Richardson calls “exotic adventure fiction.” A hunter of wild game and hidden treasures; a “Man Who Knows Indians” (or, rather, African tribesmen); an English gentleman by heritage and termperament, yet one who sought out the wild places of the earth to wander.

Fiction (NC Register): The unmistakable features of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle looked down upon me from an impressive Victorian town house. Below a larger than life portrait there was a sign; it announced: “The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre.” I made a mental note, intending to visit what I assumed was a place dedicated to the memory and literary legacy of the creator of one of literature’s most famous figures: Sherlock Holmes. It was then that I noticed another sign. It offered “services” and other activities: the building was a center for spiritualism — necromancy by another name.

D&D (Jeffro’s Space Gaming Blog): I just had no interest in running a game featuring kobolds and goblins like happens so often when you run Keep on the Borderlands by the book. But you know, with three healing spells at first level for each cleric, high powered rangers and paladins holding things down, and with enough money in the game that the fighting-men can afford plate armor now… hoo boy, they can hold their own up against some pretty tough opposition. Tougher opposition means bigger payoffs– a tradeoff that seems quite satisfactory, at least when the players are winning.

New Release (Amazon): A resurrected sorcerer grants the wishes of the desperate men who have returned him to life—but in ways none of them anticipates. A prince makes a bargain with a barbarian criminal to travel into a lost world of violence and sorcery to save the life of a woman who may already be dead. Marauders who attack a city devoted to a great goddess suffer her strange curse when she answers the pleas of her dying priestess. The last survivors of an ancient continent confront evil at every step as they march beneath skies of endless darkness to reach the haven they hope will lead them to safety.

Art (DMR Books): “Legacy Circle members of the Robert E. Howard Foundation have something to look forward to: The Challenge from Beyond Drafts. In 1935, fan publisher and future DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz wanted to celebrate the third anniversary of his Fantasy Magazine. He asked five prominent science fiction authors and five prominent fantasy authors to collaborate on two stories, both to be titled ‘The Challenge from Beyond.’

Louis L’Amour (Paperback Warrior): Deemed “America’s Favorite Frontier Writer”, Louis L’Amour’s chronicle of the fictional Sackett family was a bestselling series. Beginning in 1960, the 17-book series is still held in high regard with fans of the western genre. While Barnabas’ son Jubal is mentioned in these books, it is explained to readers that he was a loner and distanced himself from his family. Jubal was obsessed with exploring the far west and walking “where no white-man had ever wandered”.

Fiction (Fantasy Literature): Of the nine books that I have read over the last year or so from Armchair Fiction’s current Lost World/Lost Race series, which runs to 24 volumes, no fewer than three of them have involved the discoveries of hitherto unknown civilizations far beneath the Earth’s surface. In Rex Stout’s truly thrilling Under the Andes (1914), three unfortunate Americans go through a hellacious experience at the hands of a lost race of Incas beneath the mountains of Peru. In S. P. Meek’s The Drums of Tapajos (1930), a quartet of American adventurers discovers the descendants of both the 10 Lost Tribes and Atlantis, uneasily coexisting both inside and beneath a mountain in the Brazilian wilderness.

Heinlein (Pulp Net): As a young science-fiction fan, I read several authors, and would often gravitate to a particular author at a time, reading almost everything they did, before I moved on. Often I wouldn’t follow on their later works. One of these authors was Robert A. Heinlein (1907-88), one of the “grandmasters” of science fiction, and sometimes referred to as the “dean of science fiction.” Like many SF authors of the time, he got his start in the pulps, and was successful in leaving the “pulp ghetto” for better-paying markets, such as The Saturday Evening Post, and original books.
