Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: How to Train Your Dragon 2

(*screams in insanely high frequencies*) HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 IS ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS DREAMWORKS HAS EVER MADE AND SOMEHOW EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST AND I AM IN SHAMBLES EMOTIONALLY AFTER WATCHING IT BUT I NEED YA'LL TO LISTEN TO ME AS I SCREAM ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT THIS FILM IS TO ME OK?

Woo, ok, calming down a bit. But can you really blame my excitement? How to Train Your Dragon 2 is just... so damn good, it is so damn good ya'll. It takes everything the first movie did, the characters, the story, the animation, the music, and just... perfects it. It is an utterly fantastic ride from beginning to end and it is one of the main factors as to why I am so utterly head over heels for this franchise (well, it and Race to the Edge, again go watch it, its good).

We return to Berk five years after the first movie, with Hiccup under pressure from his father to take on the mantle of chief. However, danger soon arrives in the form of Drago Bludvist, who is amassing a dragon army. While searching for Drago to try and reason with him, Hiccup reunites with his estranged mother, Valka, who, much like him, has a deep affinity and respect for all dragons. From there, well, damn a bunch of stuff happens, in a story that just flows so well and just... slams you with so many emotions, from sheer joy and wonder to crushing despair and grief. It's a roller coaster, to say the least, one that is utterly captivating and at times, utterly heartbreaking. And I adore every last second of it.

Our returning characters are all fantastic, as usual. I especially love the arc Hiccup goes through here, because while the first movie was in ways, a coming of age story for him, this one truly is, with him struggling to figure out who he really is and who he's meant to be. It's a beautiful narrative about responsibility and leadership, one that Hiccup and Toothless experience together in such a beautiful, parallel way. As for our new cast, we have Valka (who I'm in love with btw) and she's just delightful. The way we get to see her bond with Hiccup and rekindle her relationship with Stoick is absolutely beautiful (AT LEAST UNTIL THE DAMN MOVIE TEARS THIS BEAUTIFUL FAMILY APART WHY CANT THEY HAVE ANYTHING NICE FUCK).

However, I do have to say that the weakest link in both this movie, as well as the next installment in this series... is its villain. The first movie didn't have much in the way of an antagonist, and I think it worked well in its favor. Because HTTYD antagonists... are kind of mid to lame. Drago Bludvist is certainly on the more mid side; he's just... ya know, a bad guy. He isn't really a compelling foil to Hiccup, just some crazy guy who wants to use dragons to conquer people and uses violence to get his way. He's not especially interesting, despite his rather cool design. He's just... there.

But that one minor point aside, everything else about this movie is utterly fantastic. The animation is somehow even more stunning than the first, with so many new dragon designs to see and an even wider world to explore. The flying and fight scenes are so mezmerising to watch, and the music FUCKING GOD don't get me started on this score. It is utterly HEAVENLY, just like the first movie's (also For the Dancing and the Dreaming has me in shambles, I'm still crying, don't look at me). What kind of insane magic Dreamworks used to make this movie look and sound as good as it does? The world may never know.

So yeah, this movie clearly has a major soft spot in my heart. I watched it when it first came out in theaters and absolutely loved it then, just like I do now. Every time I review it, I fall more in love, especially now that I've seen the tie in shows, I can appreciate how they led up to this movie and what details were thrown in that to make them serve as something of a prologue to 2.

As for the movie itself, its such a masterful work of art, one that I'll gladly return to over and over again. Aside from Prince of Egypt, it's probably my second favorite Dreamworks movie overall. And considering some of the other contenders on this list, that's saying something. I love it to pieces, always have, always will. It's wonderful.

SS is done.

The most standout part: I got the Rhea S rank. It was good. I support it, but I wish there was a gen version and also that it was available on VW. My general impression is that VW actually gives you more chances to ask after and worry for Rhea (plus Claude is a rather meh romance option), so it would be great if I could get with her there too.

In general, I wish VW and SS were just one route. Both have some nice small details, but given how similar they are, I feel like you'd get a better experience if they were just combined.

Checking my VW endgame notes, it seems VW gives you info dump about Agartha, which definitely feels missing in SS, and SS gives you a bit more detail about Byleth's deal from Rhea, which adds some nice details on the Rhea relationship front. Seriously, they should have just combined them.

(Hilariously, Catherine's endcard outright contradicts the paired Rhea one. They are incompatible, but I got both. Additionally, Ingrid's card seems to be written for Crimson Flower, since it mentions Galatea being "seized" and Ingrid needing to push strongly to be allowed to govern it, which comes across weirdly as a post-war in the Byleth-led United Kingdom, especially since the other Lions kids I recruited all got their lord positions without any apparent fuss.)

Overall, not much else to say about SS. Final take: SS and VW are really obviously the same route, but even though SS was supposedly written first, VW feels marginally better in its focus and I enjoyed it more. However, the Rhea stuff specifically is good, and I wish I could get it on VW. Yup.

Final save file time: 95:19. Minus the VW playthrough, it's 44:07, so a bit faster. Specifically post-route split, it's 20:16, so it seems like the part that I finished faster was actually just Academy phase, possibly because I just didn't care much for the BE kids.

Liveblogging notes:

Looking closely at the battle selection screen, it seems Shambhala is at the very eastern tip of the Empire. There's a bit of mountain that stretches down from the Throat across Airmid River, and it seems to be there.

Narration calls it a "sprawling underground city."

Thales was kind of a chump!

Ah, I just realized I forgot to check his X description blurbs. They probably weren't too interesting tho.

The Agarthans are super mad about living underground and not having "light." Thales also name drops Agartha in his battle line vs Seteth and in the cutscene afterwards. Aside from their ability description, I think this is probably the first time their proper name is mentioned. But we uh, don't seem to discuss this much?

Small scene with Nemesis's coffin is missing, I think. Well, obviously because he's not the final boss now. iirc the scene immediately after the month change, with everyone freaking out over Rhea is new instead. It's a little weird because iirc VW gives you more opportunities to express concern for her. Here, the Rhea focus feels a bit less supported.

Seteth didn't realize you already knew that Rhea is the Immaculate One (which you did, btw).

Seteth "long ago" lost the power to change form, but "it seems" Rhea has not. My dude, did you not know... He does confirm that he's also a child of the goddess, which Rhea keeps hidden in VW. Flayn is also counted as one of the children of the goddess, even though she's more like a grandchild. It's a general term for dragons.

Seteth and Flayn press Byleth about taking over as the leader of Fodlan in some capacity, now that Rhea's future is uncertain.

We find the Sword and Bow of Zoltan in Shambhala. I was wondering about whether these things existed, since Zoltan is a dude that got namedropped in a small quest item description a while back. I also have an Axe of Zoltan though I can't remember exactly where I picked it up. No spear?

Just noting that you use Arcane Crystals to repair magical weapons like the Bolt Axe, Mythril to repair sacred weapons like Cichol's Spear of Assal, and Umbral Steel for relics. Mythril is also used on forging the rusted weapons that require A+ professor rank. iirc they're legendary weapons from other games or something like that. Smithing Stones are for normal weapons of all rarities.

On VW, this month was about Nemesis appearing and us going to fight him, but here on SS, that doesn't happen, so the explore dialogue is all about Seteth telling us that we should become the new Ruler of Fodlan and us taking the month to think about it. Everyone around the monastery comments on this, how we should think about it carefully, how they believe in us, how they're thinking about the future, etc. It's... hm. I think it's okay, but it really highlights how much Byleth has not been setup for this role At All.

They're a mercenary who became a teacher via nepotism and while we do things in the story that you could probably read as proof of Byleth's ability to lead, they don't really feel that way, especially since Seteth can end up spending half the war refusing what we suggest. Byleth is also just... not a real character. So them becoming the big deal leader is kinda... yeah.

Anyway, I accidentally ended the month early. But whatever.

Before you tell Rhea your "decision," she gives you exposition about how she made you and Sothis's crest stone is in you. She wanted to see Sothis again and thought she could regain everything she had lost.

Sitri was Rhea's 12th attempt. She "grew up" without Sothis's consciousness and fell in love with Jeralt. But when she gave birth, the child was not breathing and she herself was also "in grave danger." Sitri told Rhea to take the crest stone from her and put it into her baby. Otherwise, both would have died.

Byleth is suggested to be able to house Sothis's consciousness because they have both the crest stone and a body born from a parent with Rhea's blood.

Rhea is aware that Sothis gave you her power and disappeared, which means Rhea's dearest wish did not come true, but she's accepting of that. She basically entrusts Fodlan and the future to you.

And she just flips out in the middle of that.

"White Beasts" appear all over the monastery. They are from priests and knights that Rhea shared her blood and "stones" with. Tho given how JP plurals work, it's impossible to tell if Rhea is meant to have one crest stone or several. Demonic Beasts also run in??

Enemies are Frenzied Church Soldiers with minor crests of Seiros, Altered Golems, White Beasts (cardinal that has transformed and gone mad due to the rage of the Immaculate One) with Blest Crest Stone Shards (bestowed by a saint and wielded as a weapon), and the Immaculate One herself. She has a crest stone of Serios, can recover HP when near a White Beast and is described as having been driven to an uncontrollable anger due to the power of the goddess.

This battle was annoying because of the Classic setting. The whole business with Rhea having a private army of people whom she shared blood with is, hm. But I get the feeling this was done purely to explain her battle having the same mechanics as with Nemesis and the 10 Elites. It's... an interesting tidbit that these cardinals and such exist, but kinda weird that the crest of Seiros is actually this common, especially since they can ALL presumably pass it down to their kids, and I would expect Rhea had done this for more than just one generation.

(funny concept: after a thousand years of Rhea just sharing her blood all over, a good three quarters of Fodlan has some Seiros crest blood and it manifests pretty much at random in people all over.)

Anyway, final blow by Flayn.

OK, enough screwing around. tbh I do like Rhea, so there's some emotional resonance in everyone being very worried about her and having little voicelines about how they want to pay back the debts they owe to her, and her sadness and suffering and all that. It's not the worst.

She mistakes Byleth for Sothis when collapsing in the cathedral.

They did make a mistake: Rhea transforms in her dressing gown without the mantle or headpiece, but she changes back in full archbishop regalia.

The post-battle exposition exposition is kinda... ah yes, all nations in Fodlan are gone, but you see the Church is leading people toward a new... nation? How does this work. Sorry, but I don't see a religious government (??) as a good thing.

Rhea says she had a vision of flying free and speaking with Sothis while near death. She's happy she survived... so am I.

Rhea's wish was for peace, but she admits fault in propagating a false history and deceiving the faithful. And she did a bit of forbidden experimentation on the side, obvs. We forgive her tho.

I wish there was a gen way to save her, without the romance. It's such a good coda, honestly, without the marriage.

I wish Byleth was a more concrete character. Not necessarily a super detailed one, but with at least some grounding traits.

Still, Rhea romance scene is pretty good. WAY better than Flayn. Why can't I do this on VW..........

Endings: Ashe takes over Gaspard as the new lord. Galatea was "seized" what the heck, though Ingrid did rule it. Felix still ended up Duke Fraldarius. Sylvain talked his way into peace with Sreng, good on him. Lindhart "escaped the Empire" but went missing. Dorothea fled with her troupe to a secret location. Petra went to Brigit. Caspar fell on a battlefield. Bernadetta because seriously ill and lived as a recluse. Ferdinand returned to his territory but went missing. Catherine became Guardian of Zanado, but why was she shaking up with MY wife in solitude? Because in the ending card with Byleth, Rhea is still archbishop and assists the leader of the new "United Kingdom of Fodlan." Shamir became Robin Hood. Alois became captain of the knights. Seteth became very tolerant lol

Wanted to let you know that I LOVE the conversation with Desire in Here there be dragons (which, btw, the title, the meditations on how to make the map infinite again in the face of like, current small/limited-world angst, woven together SO well). First off, excellent emotional beat, of course it would be Desire themself who could make Hob most clearly go "forget what everyone thinks is reasonable or possible for me, I *want* to understand wtf is happening right now". But honestly just kinda delighted at the other viewpoint into the Endless family drama about, apparently, this whole entire universe's existence.

Like, the whole multiverse premise (if I read it right), of a world in which Dream comes out the other side of being able to pursue what he wants AND change, AND do what he needs to do without self-destruction, the idea that he chose to do this so that he could have a universe within him where those two versions of him were one and the same, and maybe even possibly help bridge gaps between those versions of him in other realities? Fantastic.

But like, having Desire there for it for a bit also brings out some of the inherent comedy in the situation too because like. It is Just Like Dream to be on a universe reset and go "what would it take to make a universe where I circumvent the most tragic aspects of [canon events]" and to (somehow) go "ah yes, clearly the only solution for this problem is that we all be sea creatures". I just love love the irritation in Desire here as they all regain broader understanding/consciousness of their function and take a new form and then look around at this universe with new eyes and now have the context to go "Yo, Dream, what - and I cannot stress this enough -- the FUCK?"

Idk, it was just such a fantastic little extra moment of levity I was reading into the wonderfully somber vibe of some of these moments that is just so fitting for all the characters involved.

Ahhh hello hello! I am SO so glad you liked the fic, I've got a lot of feelings about the "change or die" aspect of Dream, and how that's his tragic flaw is that he either CAN'T change or can only change very slowly! He's set himself in a fixed narrative and, because stories are all he is, he doesn't have the authorial power to change it!

But you know who WOULD? Daniel.

I've made a big point to say that Daniel DOES NOT appear in Here there be dragons, because he doesn't! But there's another reality out there where everything proceeded according to canon, that Dream prepared his elaborate suicide attempt, that Daniel Hall the child became the vessel for Dream of the Endless and meanwhile Morpheus was allowed at last the chance to rest. Leaving behind people who loved him.

And what if Daniel, who was once human, who has a spark of human imagination and free will in him, decided to try and change that? There are countless aspects of Dream of the Endless, of which Daniel is only one, so what's the creation of one more? All that's needed is for someone to dream it hard enough. Say, someone like Hob, grieving his friend? Someone like Death, grieving her brother? Dreams only need a little push to become new stories. Stories very easily become reality.

Daniel doesn't appear in Here there be dragons because Daniel, in another time and another reality, is tapping his fingers together and wondering why the FUCK everything turned out sea monsters, but this is the most successful iteration of Morpheus-merged-with-Dream to date, and so he's just. Not going to poke at it too hard.

(The difference is the satiation of hunger and longing. Being allowed to be monstrous in your wanting. Being encouraged to be too much!)

(In another reality, Desire is HATING this entire thing because the thing that's allowed their least favorite sibling to actually grow and flourish as a creature? Is fulfilling his DESIRES? Is indulging his WANTS and his HUNGERS? What the FUCK, Daniel? Daniel shrugs. I don't know why you're so upset, he says. Look how much happier this other version of Dream is!

I don't care if he's happy, Desire says, I want LEGS again.)

The Trouble with Dragoni Children Fanfic(Sneak Peak 2)

Uh so here have some fluff I think we could all need it, Survival Shipping Kiddos along with Misako and Wu Kiddos

BTW you might wonder what does an Oni Pup Look like and I've taken the liberty to draw Lucille,

It was now 24 hours since the pups had been born, Garmadon sat on the couch one of the 3 squeaking and fussing, he cupped a hand around the pup as Vinny bustled around the Kitchen preparing their bottles.

He carefully unlocked the safe pulling out the dark matter they'd retrieved, he pulled on the gloves to carefully put a drop into the formula turning it a dark shade of purple, as he put the vial back, capping and shaking them as he walked to the living room,

"Here test since I can't, please" as he carefully took Lucille from him Garmadon taking the bottles and testing each,

"Yes, they work," he said offering one back to his husband for Lucille and then offering the two bottles to Christina and Fern,

The pups nuzzled them before latching on quick guzzling,

"Woah they eat fast" Garmadon heard Vinny say stupefied,

"Because Onis are a warring species you eat as quick and fast as possible or you starve, that starts from Birth," he responded blunt,

Vinny looked a bit saddened at this as Lucille kicked the empty bottle away he started carefully rubbing her back

"Yeah, but I wish they'd slow down. Hopefully they know it is safe here."

Fern kicked her bottle away, letting out a loud belch, making both parents stop before Garmadon actually started laughing Vinny soon followed

"Oh I think they know,"

Nobody in the Monestary had been allowed near the nest room after the eggs had been laid, Wu in dragon form sensing immediately when someone got within 500 feet, instantly going on the attack. His primal instincts kicked in, he didn't even recognize his students,

"It's been 4 months, how much longer until they hatch" Kai sighed nursing a bruise from being tail whipped by the angry Sensei wincing as Zane dabbed ointment on the nasty wound,

"Any day now, a few days after their hatched, he should revert back-" Misako stopped perking up as a soft crooning filled the Monestary "or right now excuse me"

Lloyd met her near the wing only family or the Partner in Misakos case had been allowed near, as the crooning announcement call continued it meant they were hatching

Misako took the lead, going into the sight of the dragon now stood off the nest eyeing the ornate eggs,

"Hello Wu, is it time?"

The dragon bowed his head, finally spotting Lloyd and nudging him closer

"I think he wants you to watch closely and be the first as their older sibling," She murmured Wu's strange purring seemingly confirmed her theory

He crept close his keen ears picking up chirping then the first pip, the green ninja felt like a little kid as the dragonlette smashed the ornate Egg to smithereens landing on their back

"Well hello there" he actually laughed, he could've sworn it smiled back they were a beautiful gold in color with a white mane

The second egg didn't make a sound, so they focused on the hatched Dragon, Misako looking to Wu, who allowed her to get close

" may I pick them up just to check them over and make sure they are healthy?" She asked and chuckled as he nudged her closer as if to say

" they are yours as well you have all rights to pick them up"

She carefully reached in and picked the serpant up looking them over

" looks like we got that daughter" She laughed" I think we settled on Yoko didn't we?"

He bobbed his head as Lloyd grinned gently petting her

"Hello, Yoko."

It was another about 5 hours before the second egg pipped however after 10 hours they grew worried it was well into the evening and even Lloyd eyed the egg with concern

"Mate I'm going to need to break the egg open all right?" She asked

He gave a huff and grabbing a butter knife using the blunt side she carefully cracked from the pip point, prying the top off

To their absolute astonishment the little dragon was asleep, they blearly blinked up at them looking annoyed she got a spit of smoke to her face Lloyd's snickering could be heard

" yeah little sibling I'm pretty sure that's how we all felt when we were dragged into this world" he joked as he peered in as his youngest sibling curled back up trying to go back to sleep

"He's not going to be too happy about this we can't keep carrying them around in their egg they have to come out" Misako snorted to Wus chortling laugh

She reached in and lifted the other who refused to unfurl out they just glared at her as she took a look saying

" another boy for the Garmadon family...explains the attitude"

Lloyd and Wu both gave her a look she just smiled as he furled himself around her shoulders she smiled as he went to sleep

"And this one will be Chikao"

So I finished reading all three of the Strahd stories written by PN Elrod and I have a lot of thoughts (btw I call her version 'Caretaker Strahd' and consider him a different character to 5e Strahd)

SPOILERS FOR THE STORIES UNDER THE CUT

strahd is so definitely a gamer, I could totally imagine him showing off his setup and pc if he lived in modern times

he'd have those cool ones that flash when you type on them and really expensive gear too, he's somehow found out how to play video games despite computers not even being invented in his time

That thing he does where he possess someone else is SO UNDERUSED omg, what are the limits? Can he possess wolves and bats if he turned into them first? Possess dire wolves?? Dragons???

since vampiric charm in 5e only works on humanoids I'd assume that his version of it also only works on humanoids, except that he was able to possess another vampire in the same way so maybe his works on undead too

WHICH MEANS HE CAN BUILD A FLESH GOLEM AND POSSESS IT

fanfic where Strahd builds a mecha and kicks ass

i'd imagine his first mecha would be a robotic version of himself that uses the weird potion as fuel so he can go to other domains (and also has a self destruct button to avoid another 'Azalin's ANGY' incident

his second one might be a giant wolf with him in wolf form piloting it with the magic ball, because a four legged mecha is easier to build than one with 2 legs

also I can't shake the thought of him asking for Barovians to pay taxes in the form of blood donations

I mean for one thing he wants to survive and not let people know he's a vampire but come on are you going to eat your townsfolk when you run out of prisoners?

it's slightly better when he says that he can use his mind control powers to make them forget that he drank from them but stillllllll :(

according to Azalin the most experimentation he's done about going into the mists is the thing with holding a string and running in, and tbh that's like the only thing I agree with Darcelus on

like dude you've been alive for hundreds of years and you're too horny about some redhead to investigate wtf is going on?

makes you wonder how much he knows about the sunlight burning him as well

if I were a vampire I would be testing this out every day and try to develop some kind of sunlight proof outfit to go outside with, and if people ask what I'm wearing I'll just say I have a skin condition

OH and since people are bound to take notice of his mechas he's building, maybe he can excuse this by saying he needs blood to power his mechas

so now he doesn't need to bite his villagers :D

and about the way he can make an outfit that sunlight proofs him- I have an experiment in mind. If he can metabolise, then he can cut pieces of his hair and put them under sunlight and look at them under a magnifying glass to see how they burn. And he can slot materials such as cloth etc between the sunlight and his hair to see if it blocks out the sun, and maybe he leaves it there for a few hours to see if it ACTUALLY blocks out the sun and isn't just burning there but slower

maybe the vision part will be harder to do since IDK if UV ray resistant glass even exists here, but maybe he just casts a spell on the costume so he can see out of it

and he can just put on an entire suit of armor over it assuming it's cloth and then he can go out in public in daylight- he doesn't need to breathe so suffocation isn't a problem

alternatively he can hide his ridiculous clothing by casting disguise self but he probably has already solved that problem

i sure hope vampires don't sweat

I don't think they do but if he does, I don't think he'll like it one bit

I lowkey headcanon him as autistic because he's good at keeping a straight face, hates being social (to the point where he will throw letters at people from the shadows rather than talking to them directly), once stared for ages at a wall because he was angy, identifies with animals more than people, and idk he probably has some sensory issues from how strongly he reacts to certain smells

or maybe I just can't feel pain idk lol

i wonder if Sergei and/or Tatyana were polyamorous, he sure as hell never asked them first

wonder how much it would explode his head if it turns out centuries later that they were poly all along and he killed Alek and Sergei for nothing

Strahd said that kissing women felt nice but he doesn't really want to do it because he hungers for blood and he has to repress it, why does he hunger for people aside from Tatyana it seems?

hmmmmmm I have never ever seen ANYONE react to a person irl like how Strahd reacts to Tatyana, and it seems like I'm not the only one who finds it sus. Not just like in 'gee you really shouldn't be this obsessed over a girl' kind of sus, sus to the point where people theorise that she's a succubus or something. SO I'm thinking, does Strahd look inside and wonder why he's so attracted to Tatyana? like... he's not very curious or scientific the way Azalin is, so he probably didn't investigate it and he isn't the introspective type AT ALL so there maybe isn't a lot of looking into it that he did

my headcanon is that something happened between him and Tatyana in another life, maybe he was already cursed from there or something

because his crime wasn't that bad in comparison to other darklords.... killing two people vs mass murder

crack theory- Tatyana is a darklord as well and stuck in the same domain as Strahd, in a past life she cast a spell on him that made him fall in love with her madly, but her curse is that he will never be able to be with her and that she won't recognise him from the past life

because ngl her situation seems worse than Strahd in some ways

still I would REALLY love to know if there was any more background to Strahd's obsession over her other than 'tatyana's hot'

just scrolled to the top and remembered that since Strahd has some sick writing skillz, he would make an amazing youtuber as well

he'd be able to write something like the DSMP for money and entertainment purposes

that is a cursed line why did i write that lmao

I don't think he'd be a streamer since he seems to love his privacy and his autobiographies seem reserved for meeting people he really trusts and showing them his life story without having to sit down and explain it through because he hates social stuff

Azalin said that Strahd had a weird/ random sense of humor so I would really like to see how he responds to memes or if he would make them

Strahd REALLY goes out of his way whenever possible in his autobiographies to be like "actually no I'm not that nice, I'm doing this semi nice thing because of xyz" to the point where I'm suspecting he's trying to cover up the fact that he cares about stuff more than he actually does but he's trying to be intimidating

he obviously feels emotions and is sad about Sergei and Alek but he's an emotional repression person and probably tries to hide ANY kind of pain that isn't Tatyana related

each of amaya's deaths explained ( cw for the discussion of well. death. wounds & a mild case of what might be considered body horror ).

death 01 - praeto.rium.

yeah so laha.brea absolutely killed amaya . they were already extremely tired when they confronted the asci.an. usually they would have even tried to run away but the thought of leaving tha.ncred to his fate terrified them. but they just stood no chance. not after having to fight their way to gai.us first, losing the group of mercenaries they came in with ( personally I go with the old 8 man number - a dedicated group of 7 other people meant to help amaya reach the ulti.ma weapon while a bigger group was meant as a distraction ). the fight took quite a toll on amaya so it is no wonder they became slower & slower while fighting lah.abrea. even with their full strength amaya doubts they could have defeated him... they absolutely remember him as a terrifying force of nature. staring at his face they felt the same kind of fear they felt during the calamity. just 'this is something I cannot survive' but they have to. for than.cred. & yet. they die. not nearly die. they die. their heart stops & they fall to the ground motionless. while the cutscene shows hydael.yn saying smth along the lines of 'do not give up, look to the light for guidance' or smth, amaya does not hear that. they, for just a moment, feel as if they are laying on grass, looking up at someone in a white robe, with long white hair. they cannot properly see the face, it is a blur but they have this deep feeling of knowing this person... they also had a short memory flash before them of a stern looking man rolling his eyes at one of their antics & them laughing. the first time amaya glimpses into az.em's life. & then they wake up again, wounds painfully forced to heal quickly & an unnatural surge of energy. I also think forcing lah.abrea away from thanc.red's body is the first time amaya uses dynamis. they are lucky their revival took him by surprise because they still wouldn't have defeated him ( how, they don't even have an aura.cite ). their soul does look different after prae. there is a stagnancy to it. something's just a bit off & to this day amaya has nightmares about it .

death 02 - final steps.

( tw for possibly the most violent death described here )

so. final steps. yeah... that was a mess & a half. when nid.hogg transforms into a more humanoid form & uses the stardiver looking attack... he hits amaya. it is on instinct & probably something amaya may have learned from y'sht.ola but they try shielding the ishga.rdians & alphin.aud from the attack - one of the last times until the end of shb that amaya uses something akin to white magic in regards to others. but that is where they make a mistake & the lance goes through them. the big scar on their side is from that incident, basically that whole part of their body was ripped open. amaya did not even scream because the shock took over. they remember collapsing & the fear they felt when nid.hogg turned towards the city... turned towards so many people they loved. that fear is what they remember the most. the panicked thoughts going "nono, i cannot loose them too" because they already lost haurch.efant & ysa.yle. because they still have not found all the scions. they are probably dead for a few seconds before hraesvel.grs eye & what I would assume is dynamis again, start doing their work. it probably looks terrifying but the dragon's eye rebuilds & closes that wound with magic ( & it is visibly magic, not flesh but glowing strings, it takes months in the hospital for it to fade to normal flesh & skin, leaving a massive scar ) - the side effects of this death are that amaya has now a more draconic nature - a dragon could easily comment on it how amaya isn't a heretic like an ishg,ardian who has partaken in dragon blood but something else. their scales have hardened & their color is similar to that of the great wyrm. btw amaya flinched for a while after estin.ien joined the scions & whenever he used stardiver. their body remembers & does not like that memory. but they are getting better with it, maybe in the future they can even pick up the lance again.

death 03 - at the edge of the universe.

it's not end.singer that kills them. it is zen.os. that fight left them so terribly tired ( & hurt, a slash across their chest ) but mostly just. tired. burned out. but in a strangely good way - amaya feels peaceful when they lay there. they do think that it be a shame if they died, they finally want to live, want to see their friends again, want to discover more of the star... but if this is it then maybe, this is not too bad. they drift off & two things happen. because dynamis works strangely, it manages to form az.em's conscious into its own separate thing for a bit. & az.em uses creation magic to give amaya the choice of what they want to do: amaya dreams of a life where things went better. where their fiance did not die during the calamity, where they live in the shroud a quiet & happy life. but... amaya constantly has the feeling of forgetting something. they set the table for far more people & when asked they laugh & say 'well the others are surely coming for dinner!' 'who are the others?' 'oh you know the twins and... and...hah. who else...' that is the moment amaya realizes this is a dream & that they can make a choice... allow it to consume them, to let the dream guide them into the aetherial sea & towards rebirth ... or to choose life. & amaya decides to live. I like to think the second thing that happens during that time is az.ems conscious looking for ha.des & hy.th - if their souls stayed close to UT to watch over the wol -. they'd use that chance to say their final goodbye, knowing they will most likely never meet like this again. but yes. those are the three times amaya died. they don't like talking about it - except the last one. it is a more intimate & private memory so not something they casually mention but they would tell the scions. that amaya's love for them made them choose life.

Though when he meets you for real, he's shocked seeing that you were human and how nice you were.

But he quickly recovers, turning his charm back on as he asks what made you have a change of heart.

You just say "well I told my fellow witches that maybe we shouldn't torture cookies who are alive....apparently they didn't like that".

The goodness in your heart outweighed the evil and restored your humanity. And this impresses Rougefort and...sorta makes him question his own morals.

Alas he's too stubborn to change his way of life. Though you can understand he's but a simple cookie with admiration for jewels.

Almond

He heard rumors of a "peaceful" witch gaining the trust of other cookies.

Interesting, indeed. He had to see this for himself. So he tries gathering all the info he can about your location.

When he finally meets you, he's impressed seeing you were human, baking some cookies and setting them free instead of leaving them to die in the oven.

Of course, he's gonna interrogate you (since your kind committed heinous crimes against cookies, he'll treat you no differently).

But you could see his expression soften as you explain how you didn't want the cookies roaming your town to live in fear anymore.

Usually he's a tough almond to crack, but he's glad you abandoned your evil ways.

Spinach

During her usual travels for fresh produce, she stumbles across a gardenful of ripe veggies.

But as eager as she is to take some for her market, she sees your witch hut beside it and freezes in fear.

"Oh dear, you can take some veggies. I don't mind." She hears your voice behind her and almost screams.

Though you gently reassure her that you won't eat her, but she's understandably hesitant to step in your garden.

So you pick the veggies yourself, asking her which ones she wanted and chopping them up to put in her basket.

Although still baffled by your kindness, she expresses her gratitude before leaving.

If any cookie asks where she got these veggies from, she'll keep it a secret.

Knight

"A witch!!! I do not fear you! En garde!"

It's natural for Knight to go on the offense when he sees your kind. But he's confused when you try explaining you have no plans to eat him.

Not wanting to be tricked, he has Dragon's Tail summon the fiery beast...only for you to calmly dispel it with your magic. Once again, you tell him you just wanna talk.

Finally, he bites. "Fine, Witch. Do you wish to form an alliance with us?"

"That's what I'm hoping to do."

"Even though you risk betraying your people?"

"Already doing that now. And I don't regret it."

If he meets you again, he'll still refer to you as "Witch" instead of your name. But with each visit he speaks less scornfully.

Chestnut

He saw you emerge from your hut while on his usual routes.

But as he wondered why you looked more human that witchy..

That's when he accidentally ran over a sharp rock and fell off his tricycle. His cries of pain alerted you to his presence.

He was obviously terrified when you approached him, but you reassured the young lad you weren't gonna hurt him, taking him and his broken tricycle back inside.

In no time at all you repaired it, while he sat in front of the fireplace, feeling happier and content.

While he never understood why you helped him, he was certain your name will appear in newspaper headlines pretty soon. He couldn't wait to pass them out.

Walnut

Being the nosy cookie she is, Walnut heard about your existence and vowed to find you first.

This could be the case of the century! She can already see the headlines: "A Witch Shows Sweetness to Cookiekind!"

It doesn't take her long to find your hut, and when she does she's a bit scared but eager to learn more about you and why you're so kind to cookies.

Though your answer is rather mundane. You simply had good morals.

Yep. That's all it is.

But she smiles and takes notes anyways before heading back to town, excited to share her discovery with Almond.

How... curious. Someone like you, Zhongli should have met you long, long ago. Something about you stood out to him immediately, alerting him to the fact you weren't completely human.

Sometimes you would bring him small gemstones as a gift, even before the two of you started dating. Sometimes, he had no idea where they were from, as the gems you presented weren't native to the area or sold at the stores nearby. No, he knew every stone in Liyue, and this was not one of them.

The god of Geo was amused, to say the least. You were interesting and your habit of pulling gems out of seemingly nowhere was the first he had ever seen. He originally decided to simply sit back and watch, observing you quietly as you went about your business.

Eventually, Zhongli watched you feast upon a precious gemstone, his eyebrow rising in intrigue. Finally, with a soft and curious expression, he sat down across from you, a pot a tea set between, and asked you what exactly you were capable of.

And so you told him. You told him about your abilities, the dragon form and the human one, and the gems that sustained you. He was quiet, his hand pressed against the tip of his chin as he listened intently. He said nothing, only occasionally humming and nodding to show he was still listening.

Zhongli's eyes twinkled like molten gold as he gazed at you, delight evident across his handsome features. He was right in thinking you were an interesting being, but his curiosity was far from satiated.

What did your dragon form look like, he wondered, asking you with genuine interest. He wanted to see it, to praise your abilities and form to the fullest of his ability. When you did show him, he smiled widely and humbly, nodding and calling out how interesting you truly were.

You were a gorgeous creature, really, and your form suited you well.

His next question was about the gemstones you ate. It made sense to him now how you were capable of locating them so easily, but he wanted to know more. When you told him they sustained you, did you mean like food sustained a human, or did it prolong your life to the point where you would be on par with an adepti?

When you changed to your dragon form, Zhongli enjoyed sitting beside you quietly. The wind felt nice with his beloved by his side, and he felt joy in knowing you allowed him to see you in both forms of your truest self. Perhaps, if you didn't already know the truth about him, he would show you his form as well.

Yes, there was nothing that sounded nicer to him than flying through the orange-tinted sky at sunset with you, celebrating your love with the beauty that was the truth behind the both of you.

Oh, pretty gem! That was his first thought, honestly. He wasn't overly concerned with where it came from or how you got it, he just thought it was pretty and wanted to tell you. Well, for a moment at least.

When his mouth finally caught up with him, it was nonstop questions. Where'd you get it? D'you have more? Could he maybe pawn one off to try to get some cash for the tavern?...

Venti wasn't overly concerned with it, but he could tell you aren't completely human. He didn't know what you were, but it certainly wasn't human. Well, as long as you keep spending your time with him, it didn't matter to him what you are.

Doesn't mean he didn't have his suspicions, however. He knew he'd hit the nail on the head when he asked you if you could fly and you stiffened up slightly. He laughed gleefully, yelling out a loud, happy, "Gotchu!"

There was no escaping it now, you had to tell him. But his attention was fully on you, listening to every bit of information you had for him.

You really could fly? How fun! The two of you had to do it together sometime, he wasn't taking no for an answer. Whether he was simply gliding along by your side or floating on the wind, he enjoyed looking down at the world around him with you. Honestly, it was one of his favorite ways to spend the day, even more so than napping under the tree at Windrise.

He thought it was pretty cool that you ate gems, honestly. Sometimes, when he brought out an apple to snack on, his face would light up with mirth as he pulled out a snack for you too. Don't be fooled, however, as he sometimes would try to trick you into taking a bite out of a regular old pebble instead.

As flighty as he seemed, however, your secret was safe with him. You knew about him, after all, so if you didn't want anyone but him to know, they wouldn't. He could promise you that.

He knew. There was no escaping his diligent, sharp eyes, no truth he wouldn't be able to scour from you. Despite not being one himself, he knew mortals, and you were no regular mortal.

You were different, but it wasn't really his concern. When you did finally tell him about it, he simply hit you with a basic "I know". It shocked you, honestly. How did he know?

When you told him about what sustained you, he didn't react. Why would it matter to him what you ate? Every creature had something they needed to sustain himself, and he was no different. It wasn't any of his business.

He didn't mean it when he said he didn't care, not really. When out walking, he'd keep his eyes out for something to bring back to you. Would cor lapis suffice, he wondered, deciding to pick some up to bring you. He was sheepish, claiming he only did it because he wanted to thank you for spending your time with him, but you could tell what the real reason was. And you were touched he would go to such great lengths to get something so precious for you that you could easily get for yourself.

The first time you showed him your dragon form, he was really and truly touched. The idea that you would show him something so deeply personal and special struck a chord with him, making his heart feel light and fluttery. When doing so, he reached out to touch your face softly, his eyes gentle as he looked at you in all of your glory. A silent thank you for your trust and an unspoken "I love you."

If you were small enough and not worried about the locals seeing you, he enjoyed the idea of sitting atop Wangshu Inn with you, the sunlight warming your faces. The two of you were both considerably special creatures, not fitting in with the world around you. He took comfort in that, as he took comfort in you.

The moments he spent with you, in dragon form or human form, meant everything to him, and he appreciated the deep level of trust you put forth, enough to bring tears to his eyes... when you weren't there, of course.

Perhaps it was true that the two of you were not like the world around you. One creature who ate dreams and another who eats gemstones. Truly, there was no place designed meant for you. But that was... comforting. The two of you were able to find such a place in each other, and really, that was all that matters.

I’m going to say that Cole becomes more human but before that process, he was invisible to the eye but almost always around you doing little helpful things all around you

You would eventually figure it was him after hearing other peoples little surprises

He never goes about telling you while he was more spirit because his crush on you felt more like a need to help or a safe space where he wouldn’t feel so out of place with those around him

Once becoming more human however he was still trying to trail behind you and do little things but this time you would see and remember him more often he was baffled but liked the compliments you gave

He started feeling sicker around you in a “funny way” face would heat up and would want to see how soft your hands were, he explained this to Varric, and with a chuckle, Varric gave Cole ‘the talk’

Before ever making a move to truly confess he would talk to you in riddles saying how “he feels light in your company like he could fly but also never wanted to leave because the sight of her eyes was better than the sky”

If you ask him who this “He” is he would point hesitantly to himself. Hopefully, you reassure him with a smile.

The Waifus (Kyle, Reverto, Cheval, Alwin, Lilia, Ena, Kayna, and Avinia) With An Elder Dragon S/O That’s Injured

Kyle

-At first, Kyle would thank “Nah, not Y/N. They’re too strong.” But then he sees the way your limping, and then notices all the arrows pierced into your side. He doesn’t have to be a genius to know that hunters did this to you. Kyle would be rather peeved at both parties to say the least

-He tries his best to patch you up and get the arrows out. As he does this, the hunter scolds you. Kyle tells you to be more careful. Yes, this boy is scolding an elder dragon and you find this highly amusing. If anything, Kyle was worried this mistake might happen again, so he continues to berate you for being so careless and to pay more attention to your surroundings. Don’t worry, it’s only because he loves you.

Reverto

-Reverto would see the gashes and immediately recognize the marks of a great sword. As a hunter himself (also a great sword fan), he would feel incredibly guilty. Why? He would think. Why couldn’t he have realized there was a quest to hunt down an elder dragon? He should’ve paid more attention in order to protect you better.

-He would tell you all those as he tried to clean your wounds. You wouldn’t be able to communicate, but your gaze was loving and understanding. In fact, Reverto was torn between continuing or giving up on hunting. You would scold him elder dragon style if he spoke about giving up his profession, which would put the hunter in his place.

Cheval

-Cheval was nearby when he heard the monster roars and elemental blasts. A couple minutes later, when you returned to camp, he was horrified to see all the burns and scratches. He immediately wanted to go out and kill this monster for what it did to you. However, your pitiful whines begged him to stay and not go out for revenge.

-Of course, he would comply to you. He would stay with you and do his absolute best to nurse you back to health. However, there was still anger burning within him, but at your majestic sight the rider forced himself to swallow his rage and focus on what was really important.

Alwin

-Alwin was yet to tell anyone what you are and what you could do, however, when you stumbled near the entrance of Rutoh covered in scars, he had to assure the people that everything was all right. The wyverian didn’t even worry about what happened, that’s because all his worry was put on you.

-After getting you away from the village, he would tend to your wounds while telling you to watch out for yourself. Alwin cares greatly about you, no matter what form you’re in, and he doesn’t want to see you get hurt. The wyverian would be smiling though while he gave you a piece of his mind and gently patched you up.

Lilia

-The guilt Lilia would feel after knowing that it was HER hunters that harmed you would be indescribable. She’s been very busy and all one of her Guild members told her was that an elder dragon was spotted. So, she told some hunters to take care of it. Seeing you injured after she left Lulucion to go look for you made her feel terrible.

-The commander would treat you while begging you to forgive her. Of course, your response is just a bunch of licks and cuddles which makes her smile slightly. At this point, she would feel a bit better, and would promise to pay much more attention to her work.

Ena

-Ena’s heart would break when she saw you hurt. Even more so when she finds out you fought off a monster to protect her. You guys were out walking together when you suddenly rushed ahead with a growl, startling the wyverian slightly. Coming back covered in scars made her feel a little bit honored and guilty.

-However, Ena was still a little bit afraid of your elder dragon form. She would use every ounce of her strength to force herself to tend to you. You weren’t scary, like the others, she would think to herself. To make her more comfortable, you would cover her with licks and nuzzles.

Kayna

-Inviting hunters to Mahana was a mistake, and Kayna knew this when she saw you hurt. Of course, hunters couldn’t stop themselves from going after an elder dragon. She would give both them and Chief Gara a piece of her mind. In fact, she would practically snap at everyone as she gathered stuff to take care of you.

-Kayna would be angrily rambling to you about their incompetence as she treated your cuts. You would be amused by this and would nudge her to try and make her feel better. It would work slightly as the rider laughed and nudged you back slightly. However, she would still be pretty pissed.

Avinia

-Avinia is a protector at heart, so seeing you hurt made her feel like she failed somewhere. You were truly one of a kind, and she allowed you to get hurt. Avinia would recognize the wounds being from a barioth that must’ve attacked you as you made your way through the canyon. That would almost make her feel slightly guilty as she looked at Frostfang.

-The rider would clean up your wounds to help them heal faster. Then she would make you promise to not go anywhere without her there to shield you. She would feel a little ridiculous, saying this to an elder dragon. However, the Kuan rider cares about you and wants to be certain that she did everything in her power to assure your safety.

"Aurene," Sanne calls out. Her voice echoes in the crystals and the Mists draw their invisible pull. She feels them wash her magic, bump against it, making her skin tingle. It almost feels like when Bear first reached out to her and it brings back memories of early exploration of the Spirits' guidance and conversations with them. "I don't think we've met before, but I came to see the Scrying Pool."

"It draws you too, norn?" Aurene says, in a voice of gentle wonder.

"It does. I'm a shaman, though not an ordained one. If there is such a thing as ordained shamans with the norn." Sanne shrugs. "I was curious. And please, call me Aisanne. Norn feels- Too broad?"

"Alright, Aisanne." She turns her crystalline head to Sanne and Sanne swears her eyes go a bit wider. "So you're the famous Aisanne!"

"The famous Ai- what?" Sanne blinks in utter confusion. "I'm glad I'm famous and I know the Spirits sing only praise for me but, I'm just- Where have you heard of me?"

"Braham mentions you more than he would like to admit," Aurene giggles. Or Sanne thinks it's a giggle. "It adds up. Golden hair, connection to the Spirits. All you really lack right now are the birds, from his stories."

"They're around here somewhere, I'm sure," Sanne stammers, blushing and clearing her throat. "I lose Gemma anywhere that's decently snowy. Braham mentioned my name to an Elder Dragon, heh."

Bear's paws. She looks down and puts a strand of hair behind her ear.

"He likes you, little norn," another, colder voice adds with glee that doesn't seem as genuine as Aurene's. A shiver runs down Sanne's spine, though she tries her best to hide it.

She will not forget that voice anytime soon.

"I think I remember you too. You were with the Champion?" Jormag ponders and Sanne's hands shake a little. They're contained; she really shouldn't be scared. Yet she's scared, her gut tightens and she cannot show it to Jormag of all beings. Of all dragons.

"What does it do for you?" she asks, scowling.

"I'm just trying to remember! Is that not allowed?" Jormag asks back.

Sanne wants to bark out a firm NO but her pride is a dam she cannot cross. This creature's minions killed Kiaran, her aunt, her cousins. Their blood is on Jormag's hands. They were, or were going to be, all sensible, good, strong norn, and they cut them down just like that.

She remembers their pyres. She remembers her uncle trying not to cry as they burned away his family's bodies. She remembers Jormag's face in the cave and still feels the ice she fell on when her legs refused to carry her.

Now, this creature wants to talk to her. Remember her. Almost feels like blasphemy.

But she stands. She stands before them dressed in warm fur and with a long braid, straight and with a scowl. She wishes she had tattoos, and a little idea forms. When this alliance saves the world, when Jormag is dead, she'll get a neck tattoo for all to see, pain be damned.

No other norn of her blood will fall under Jormag's paw again, Spirits as the witnesses.

"If you want to remember me, remember me by my name," she says. "Aisanne Bjornsdottir."

"Bear's daughter," they say. "I'd introduce myself but you already know who I am, Aisanne. I'm glad to see you stand a little stronger this time."

Sanne sits by the Scrying Pool. "I didn't come here to make smalltalk, Jormag," she says, taking her boots off. "There are more interesting things to me right now than you."

Jormag makes a pleased, non-committal hum and Sanne's skin itches with the need to get away. Yet she doesn't, and soon, the voice that speaks is a rough scrape that belongs Bangar.

"A show, Warmaster?" he rasps out, thinking he's funny. Probably. She doesn't speak evil-charr-imperator-dickhead.

She's naked like a babe, but she doesn't give two shits about it as she squints at him. "Not for you, you ruin," she says in a sing-song voice and takes a dive in the Scrying Pool.

Thoughts on Dark Fortress #2

(This post is under a cut due to spoilers.)

So late with this one! some stuff irl was keeping me really busy and hyper-distracting me lately, but it’s finally over now so I’m back on my bioware bullshit. :D

Overall there were a lot of beautiful or awe-inspiring scenes in this issue, and a lot of great, meaningful / poignant character interactions and moments between characters. It’s pretty impressive actually how much was able to be packed in. I posted some of my favorite panels here. also omg! the action sequences! the big reveal! the ending!! woww

cool scene-setting, panned out shot of Neromenian and behind it, the Dark Fortress, to immediately pull you back into the world and ‘where we left off’. the combination of ruined dead trees, red lights, lightning and fire/smoke is very atmospheric and hints at what’s ahead

“From this... city, if we can call it that” is a sick burn and reminds you that the Qunari are technologically more advanced than most of the rest of Thedas, from their cannons to their aqueducts

more individually distinct Qunari soldiers, sth I again appreciate

! last issue there were big ‘You haven’t seen the last of Tractus!’ vibes, naturally, but I didn’t expect him to escape by stabbing and killing the Qunari using a chair-leg..!!

the last panel on the first page of Karasten is really good. the way it’s colored, the way it’s lit, the light and shadow, the fiery backdrop, cinders floating, the details of his expression.. 👌 it also makes me think to the possible future, to DA4 when mainland Thedas may be continuing to face the entirety of the Antaam

in Vaea’s acrobatics scene on the bridge, I know rationally that she’ll be fine but couldn’t help but worry for her. again I like how they don’t shy away from showcasing Vaea’s specific abilities. also the attention to detail - you’d think some rocks are just some rocks, but it highlights the risk she’s undertaking that if she falls it’s into rough seas which could dash her against the jagged rocks :’S. Vaea, gooooo!

Fenris’ “Enterprising girl” line has big “Clever girl” meme energy :D

my heart can’t take Fran and Autumn leaning over the edge after Vaea in worry ;; or Aaron looking back in concern over his shoulder ;; or Fran’s tender reassurance ;; or Autumn’s Worried expression ;; the care and bonds which have grown between this group of characters ;;

notice Aaron starts drinking when Vaea’s away from them and they’re beginning to grow worried about her safety. the poor man’s nerves and stress levels

Fran touching the vegetation while she’s considering if she could use her magic to open the entrance from the outside is a nice touch

did Marius leap in front of Fenris and Fran there when the entrance opened?? damn, he’s quick. and the three of them look all scary and formidable here ready for combat. notice how the curve of the door and the spikes that go into the ground, and the composition of this panel, make it look like they’re standing in front of an opened dragon’s maw? ‘teeth’, a rumbling ‘roar’.. some nice foreshadowing here.

the reunion panels are so cute. Autumn’s lil tum as she jumps and Fran and Fenris’ lil smiles of relief and at Autumn’s reaction to seeing Vaea, then a rare happy beam from Aaron.. feel.. the love ;__;

red lighting in the tunnel sets a dangerous, dramatic build-up mood

👀 more info on Fenris’ past, on the specifics of the process which gave him his markings. in the panel where he says that it took a long time, his shadow on the wall behind him reminds me of the shadow of his past that has dogged him for so long :(

discussion of the process shows the power difference between blue and red lyrium. blue lyrium took a long time, red lyrium is almost instant

Autumn is such an intrepid little explorer and alert scout, tail and ears up, head forward. good girl!

“I just... worry about you, my girl” ‧º·(˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )‧º·˚ I’ll be so sad if these are death flags for Aaron and he doesn’t make it out of here. also note Fran in this panel, who recently had to kill her own father and is still dealing with that, watching the strongly paternal moment between Aaron and Vaea :(

love Vaea’s faith in Aaron and her sense of humor. also I don’t know why, maybe it’s because Vaea met Sebastian, but her “Maker, no!”, although in a completely different and light-hearted context, reminds me of Sebastian’s “Maker nooo!” at the end of DA2 hh

the reference again to Hawke, who Fenris saw haunted by what they tried to do - save their mother - and couldn’t :’(. also with the shadow in this panel, here’s another person struggling with the shadow of his past qq. this is later emphasized again in Aaron when he continues to talk about his past and in the panel is a chain and manacle. smart visual metaphors, a must in the comic medium with limited space

mushroom skull 💀🍄

“It isn’t about what I’ve done. It isn’t about my failures. Or my choices. It’s about their impact” - he’s misty-eyed here as he thinks back to Ostagar.. does this line btw seem almost meta to anyone else btw? :D it feels like a meta reference to the experience of DA players and PCs, who are always having to deal with the impacts of their choices

I wanna point out that I was right on reading issue #1, when I said “I’m positive that in panel 2 here, it’s the exact moment when he sees Cailan die” ;;

So Aaron is also a veteran of the Battle of Denerim

reference to the Hero of Ferelden - “Those were someone else’s battles”. I’m being captain obvious here but I can’t help but [heart pitter-patter] at any and all references to the HoF

I like the.. parallel? is that the word? Aaron’s stories were him trying to inspire people to make a change, or him trying to convince himself of that. and now here’s Vaea, inspiring Aaron with her words in these panels. the little guys can make a difference! in the world of Thedas, you don’t need to be a big bombastic hero or a Player Character to have an impact

lmao Fenris right on cue. the moments of humor/light-heartedness are nice because they break up the tension and are sprinkled throughout without derailing build-up or taking away from dramatic story impact. yknow?

👀 lore-drop! so ancient elven arcane warriors used lyrium-infused swords. this seems to confirm the sarcophagus is an ancient elven artifact, no? makes sense, wasn’t it said that the sarcophagus’ design was based on the architecture/outfit-design type elements of a specific faction, and that this was done intentionally? it looks kinda ancient elfy in make, right? also about the lyrium-infused swords of the arcane warriors, well well well.. remember that the Evanuris and the ancient elves mined the bodies of Titans for lyrium, for power and to use as a resource. here’s an example of that use

lore-wise what are the implications here? when Fenris’ ritual was being undertaken, the sword and the sarcophagus were bombarded with magic, fire spells. in this one they aim to have the dragon bombard it with fire-breathing. is it just fire that makes it work/powers it, or is there magic in dragonfire, in dragons? it reminds me of “Your heart beats with the old blood, as well. Where do you think it comes from? It sings of a time when dragons ruled the skies. A time before the Veil, before the mysteries were forgotten. Can you hear it?”

and separate to the above, some speculation based on the cover of Issue 3: the piece of metal looks like a broken collar coming off Shirallas, like the one there was on the cover of Issue 2 coming off the dragon. also he’s all bulky now with draconic talons/claws (reminds me of in-world legends of Reavers who dug too deep of their own power after drinking dragon blood and whose bodies consequently began to manifest subtle reptilian traits actually). I’ll be interested to see what results of this allusion between Shirallas and the dragon!!

R-r-r-rewatch thoughts for The Mandalorian S2 Ep2

(or Chapter 10 as they seem resolved to call it)

- can I just express my joy for a moment that in one episode we get peli, the answer to my pleas for female representation in the ‘sketchy middle aged car mechanic’ niche, and a female alien designed with no consideration towards sexiness. (I mean I’m sure there’s someone. There is always someone somewhere on the Internet, is the bitter truth history has shown to us. but it’s not the intention behind the design haha)

- they do take great pains to deliberately show you boba’s armour several times both in the recap and in the episode itself, so never despair he is very likely still on his way onto our screens once more

- this dude holding the baby hostage wanting specifically the jetpack in exchange is the one (1) break this whole episode gave din lol

also the Patented Mando Finger Curl of Stress while he talked softly and calmly to not promp this asshole to make a sudden move... the most endearing character tic, I love my space cowboy dad so much

- fun continuity detail: din is all out of whistling birds now, and you can see it here!

I wonder if he could still use the same mechanism with different ‘ammo’, it’s just not as effective? from the way the armorer spoke whistling birds seem quite rare and it would be an inefficient use of beskar if that’s the only thing it can be loaded with

- I love how after the last episode, a 50 min epic with a bunch of original trilogy significance and impressive technical achievements and exciting character reveals, I was like ‘yeah okay I suppose that is quite interesting’, and this mess/comedy of inconveniences is the thing that fully makes my brain tip into the obsessive ‘BABY AND DAD SHOW!! BABY AND DAD SHOW!!!!!’ mind state lol

- ah the traditional ‘mando trudging slowly but steadily through the desert’ montage we all love to see (I hope this is going to be a Thing for the second episode of every season from now on)

Also I assume his suit has some sort of temperature regulation built in and that’s how he didn’t, y’know. die under the blazing desert sun

yodito’s look in this scene tho... he’s like ‘we’ve Seen some shit lady’ (actually I think he’s staring at ‘dr mandible’ like O___o. it’s been a long day for a lil boy)

you get to see dr mandible’s cards a few times, so I assume anyone who knows the rules of... sabacc? probably? could figure out beforehand that he was in a bad spot. (the star wars fanbase is one of those where I KNOW the rules exist somewhere, and I know people who know those rules exist too)

- that sound the baby keeps making -- the ‘boo-a’, sometimes with a p-sound at the end -- if that’s the precursor to him saying any variation whatsoever of ‘dad’ or ‘papa’ or ‘baba’ or even ‘buir’ or anything, I will die. I will sink to the ground in a heap and never get up (the way he keeps seeking out gaze contact with the helmet and seems perfectly satisfied with it too... fasdhfaskdjhl my FEELINGS)

- it seems confirmed in this ep that the mandos who died on nevarro did so while holding off the enemy so the rest(probably especially the children) could get away; some of them appear to have escaped. which I guess is a small relief

I like that her firm nod after Peli translates ‘her husband has seen them’ lets us know she understands... basic? is that the common tongue thing in star wars there’s just so many to remember across fandoms lol? perfectly well, even if she can’t speak it.

- mando might be running low on ammo for the pulse rifle, if the fact that he hasn’t replaced the missing cartridge on his... bandolier belt thingy is any indication

ETA: actually ignore me this has been a thing since the literal first episode of the show my brain just had a hiccup lol

- so baby seems to use a little bit of the force to pull the eggs towards him -- I wonder how often he ‘taps into it’ or if it’s always ‘on’ in the background for him. if so I guess there’s no wonder he’s so hungry (but also... kid you can’t end this lady’s entire family line like that one cat who singlehandedly made extinct a whole species of bird! D:)

- din so rarely gets openly angry, he just gets passive aggressive and grumpy. and that’s probably not the healthiest way to deal with things but I love him

- frog lady reacts so strongly to when din sends the ping when nothing else woke her up, I wonder if she can hear more frequencies than a human

proof nr 1508 that din does not starve this baby you guys, he even has his own little tray just the right size for him! as it happens the baby simply seems to prefer eating things that are... still alive in some capacity. which, uh. maybe they can invest in some form of non-sentient crickets or something for him to hunt down and.... oh dear

By the way I finally managed to put into words why the Razor Crest -- and particularly the way it keeps getting beaten to hell and back and patched up again -- is so symbolically important and meaningful to me in this show in this post over here! it’s always a great relief to me when I can finally understand what the hell I’ve been going on about all this time and this was one of those lol

- honestly if it weren’t for frog lady and (more importantly) the baby I think there’s a slight chance din would’ve gone ‘well I had a good-ish run of it for a while there’ and just let the ice claim him haha

- “Why don’t you come over here and give me a hand. Make yourself useful” This is the one time in the episode I think he crosses the line into just being a dick for a moment (but noticeably the baby isn’t just a little hurt at this reaction, he’s clearly surprised and confused, which means this really does not happen often. after the time mando’s been having recently I guess a moment’s snappishness is understandable haha. he does follow up right after with being much more responsive and attentive when the baby toddles away from him, so it feels like it’s going to be okay)

also the ‘boo-ap’ sound is there again when he’s trying to get din’s attention. just sayin’

when din comes over to see the footprints baby makes a declarative little meep like ‘see??? I did tell you!’ haha

- it is very funny that mando is using all his technology meant to track down dangerous bounties in the grungy depths of the criminal underworld... to find a naked lady just chillin’ in a hot spring

cue the ‘father is evil?’ memes fsadfda. actually the funniest thing about this moment (apart from the fabulous finger acting) is that din actually snatches a few eggs out of the baby’s reach more subtly right before, and that baby only whines for ALL OF ONE SECOND before he goes to sniff around for other food possibilities fkadfhjkds. from my experience with human children he’s a lot less prone to tantrums. yodito doesn’t get mad, he gets even

- baby running towards din through the hatching spiderlings like ‘DAD I FUCKED UUUUUUP’, din’s little strangled ‘ngh’ sound as he picks the baby up and watches all the creepy crawlies come out... *chef kiss* impeccable

(that little ‘ngh’ and the soft shocked ‘ah ah AH!’s from when he goes flying at the beginning of the episode... pedro pascal and his voice work for this character gives me so much life. in some ways din has this sort of dignity and grace and in other ways he uh extremely doesn’t. he gets to be cool but also vulnerable in ways a lot of male main characters don’t and it’s probably why I love him so much)

btw here is that moment when din moves to hold the baby tightly against him with both hands as the big spider appears, because it gets me right in the heart... it such an instinctive thing of holding on to the dearest thing you’ve got before something bad is about to happen

this FUCKING SHOW has just WEAPONIZED putting in small details everywhere to convey the love and tenderness and attachment felt by a little muppet doll even where only weirdos like me will frame by frame their way through the video to see it I am so MAD

- frog lady going ‘fuck this’ and bounding along is e v e r y t h i n g

- din is an amazing shot, though, he doesn’t seem to miss a single one in this whole scene (then again there’s something to shoot at basically everywhere one can take aim so lol)

baby hiding behind/half hugging din’s boot as he tries to get the doors closed hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I can’t breathhhhheeeee

honestly every single one of the baby’s proximity seeking behaviours in this ep has me on my knees

- it’s very unfair to play the heroic happy mando music like everything is going to be fine and then have a huge fuck-off spider drop down from the ceiling and break it off mid-tune, the mandalorian, you have trained me in certain ways and now do you betray me??? how can I trust again

- the camera work in the scene with the new republic guys gives such a good sense of the discomfort of being judged from on high by someone or something you can’t really see -- the glare of the lights blocking out everything in the shots from din’s pov makes it feel like a tense interrogation (the new republic dude who is actually dave filoni has such a look of fondness as he watches din tho it’s kind of sweet)

- ...oh no I think baby was actually considering munching on that dismembered spider leg YODITO NO JUST EAT YOUR KRAYT DRAGON BABY

- hngh this is a weird filler episode and it has my entire heart. I suspect we might get some episodes of a more stationary baby between active ones like this -- you can tell a little bit in this episode that especially having him running around fast is quite difficult to have look natural, they likely save that effort up for when it best serves the narrative
