Asuka being revealed to be a boring guy that liked math is just hilarious.

He’s That Man, The Gear Maker, The Devil, and the man who had a hand in destroying Japan. He kickstarted The Crusades, indirectly causing the deaths of over 6 billion people worldwide.

And he likes making buckwheat noodles using Rube-Goldberg machines.

Asuka could probably be distracted by a crossword puzzle that he would find on the floor.

He turned himself in to the President of the United States and leaked that he did so to the local news.

He went and started a podcast on the moon after he removed the Seed of Adam from Sol’s neck.

He has a clone of himself for some reason.

He put his soul into a homunculus of what he looked like during his time in the Gear Project so that Sol would recognize him.

He turned Sol’s girlfriend into a Gundam because she had super cancer.

Asuka’s both the best and worst wingman you could ask for.

The fan base didn’t have so much as a face or a concrete name besides “That Man” for a decade.

He had cat ears in Xrd and that was never brought up again.

Asuka’s just a fun guy to think about!

The Contestants Are Here!

Thank you for your patience, I'm now ready to announce our contestants for the Obscure Character Showdown! There are 300 characters, split up into 6 groups of 50.

Here's how the schedule will work: Day 1 is Group A Round 1 Part 1, Day 2 is Group A Round 1 Part 2, Day 3 is Group B Round 1 Part 1, Day 4 is Group B Round 1 Part 2, Day 5 is Group C Round 1 Part 1, and so on and so forth until we reach Group F Round 1 Part 2, and then the next day we'll fold back over for Group A Round 2. I'm splitting up the rounds because tumblr can interpret posting many polls at once as spamming, and each group contains 25 polls, so. 13 one day, 12 the next.

I expect to start polls by Wednesday, May 31, but I may be a little later than that. I'll keep you updated.

The polls will be tagged with 'obscurecharactershowdown,' 'obscure poll,' and their group letter and round number.

Under the cut is the groups and matchups. Thank you all for your submissions, and I'm sorry if your submission didn't get in! If it was a submission for your OC, a mythological figure, a Real Life Thing, an album character, a commercial character, etc, then you may not be out of the running yet. Be patient, I have something else I'm working out!

Please don't come into my inbox, replies, dms, etc, and tell me that a character I chose isn't actually obscure at all. No one's media experience is universal, and from my own experiences, I picked to the best of my ability.

VC Silly Headcanon Friday - Holiday Gift Edition

Bringing this back because why not? This is a game where I ask a question and you share your fun or silly (or depressing whateves) VC headcanons about it! You can share in the comments, reblog, make a post and tag me (or not), send it to my ask box, whatever makes you happy! This is just for funsies!

What is the most fun Christmas/Holiday gift your favorite vampire has ever received? Not necessarily the best gift but the one they definitely had a blast with and really enjoyed!

For example, I believe in the 80s Daniel made the mistake of getting Armand a label maker for Christmas one year, and for a while there, everything on Night Island suddenly had a label on it. Daniel even awoke one night to find his coffin labeled "Beloved." At least it helped organize the boxes and boxes of stuff Armand had in the cellar?

I like to think one year at Trinity Gate, Armand got Louis a Blackberry and it was the first cell phone he didn't immediately "lose."

For Daniel, I think one year (maybe 86?) it was a motorcycle, given to him by Armand because he thought Lestat's was cool and he subsequently took it all over the place (sometimes with Armand). And then later, after his sanity started to return, it was an iPod that he could use to listen to music, help block out noise (in his head and otherwise), and enjoy radio shows/podcasts. It helped him come back to the world and get acquainted with some of the technology and stuff that he'd missed.

But enough about my headcanons!

Whenever You Are

“Merry Christmas… wherever you are… whenever you are…”

That’s what the voicemail left in his inbox or the card tucked into Fili’s luggage always said. It had started as a joke that first year they were together. Kili kept getting time zones mixed up, but he was always amused when Fili was a day ahead of him or a day behind him. That first year Fili had been in New Zealand while Kili was in Chicago. Kili had called and left that voicemail on Christmas Eve, but it was already Christmas morning when Fili listened to it two hours later.

Fili had teased Kili about it. And then it became their thing. And it always made Fili smile.

Neither of them were particularly attached to celebrating holidays or special occasions on the exact date that they occurred. If they celebrated Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, or anniversaries a few days late or even, once, a few weeks late, they were perfectly content. But when they did get to spend holidays and special days together they always took full advantage of them.

So Fili chose to work holidays for the extra pay. He had even come to enjoy airports on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. His flight crew often wore festive hats or pins on their clothing, passengers were often cheerful and sometimes there were even decorations or Christmas trees in the terminals. There were plenty of people who were disgruntled about their holiday flights or angry about delays due to poor weather patterns, but that was always the case and Fili chose to just ignore them because there was little to nothing he could do to improve their moods. He could only do his job. He could not change the weather, magically fix broken de-icers, or take 3 hours to fly what took 9 hours.

This Christmas he was in Bruges, France. They had landed yesterday evening and had used their last bit of energy after the long flight to explore the town that was festooned with Christmas lights, music, and festivities.

Now, the next morning, someone had pushed open the curtains of the bunk room that the airline supplied for its flight crews. Narrow single wide bunk beds lined the two walls and there were chests with available locks beneath the bottom bunks. This room, unlike many, had a coffee maker and Gina, the head stewardess, had waked them all with the scent of freshly brewed coffee.

“Highlander Grogg,” she informed him when she set the sterile white mug down in front of Fili. The mugs in the kitchen he shared with Kili never matched. Each was full of character, some had even been repaired with lines of gold after they had been dropped or knocked over. “Decent coffee in the morning is my Christmas gift to all of you.”

Fili nodded his thanks and reached for the mug. The blanket was still up around his ears and half covering his head. He only managed to sleep in these places with the help of noise canceling earbuds and having the blanket covering his face to block out all sight and any sound that was not taken care of by the earbuds. Somehow he had managed to sleep in a time before cell phones, earbuds, audiobooks, and podcasts, but he could not remember how. He sipped the hot coffee and groaned in appreciation. “Best. Christmas. Gift. Ever,” he informed Gina.

The rest of the crew readily agreed from their bunks or the couch near the door.

This yearFili found the card tucked into his folded undershirt. The cover of the card was decorated with a glittery Christmas tree surrounded by gifts and woodland animals. Fili was going to have glitter trapped in his chest hairs for days. That knowledge came from experience. A previous year had involved an even glittery-er card that had been folded into his underwear.

Even though Fili knew what the card was going to say he smiled when he read it. The words were in Kili’s nearly illegible script.

Fili tucked the card inside the cover of his book so that it could join the rest of the cards in the memory box in the back of his closet.

One last walk through the city left them all with the taste of Christmas carols and twinkling lights and a dusting of snow on their minds. As beautiful as the city was, it could not compare with the view Fili knew was waiting for him when he landed at his home airport. This year he and Kili would actually spend some of Christmas day together and that made the day just a little bit more special than usual because there would be leftover Christmas ham to eat, cookies to be munched, and blankets to be cuddled under all without the expectation of having to get up and do anything productive for the next few days.

Kili was standing outside the Arrivals door when Fili finally deplaned nearly 12 hours later. He was wearing a pair of fuzzy black earmuffs to keep the cold at bay.

Fili dropped his bag and hugged Kili. This was home. As nice as their apartment was and as much as he liked all of their things, this was the part he always missed the most and anticipated the most when he finally came home.

“I missed you,” Fili said into Kili’s hair.

“You were only gone two days,” Kili teased, but he tightened his arms around Fili and did not pull away when Fili’s freezing nose brushed against his neck. “Are you sure you don’t just miss Franz?”

Fili snorted. “He’s still a kitten.”

“And that means you can’t miss him?”

Fili hummed in response. “Maybe just a little.”

“Ready?” Kili asked when Fili loosened his grip.

“Only if I am promised dinner, a shower, and cuddles—not necessarily in that order.”

“That I can promise.”

Fili stowed his bag in the trunk while Kili started getting the car warmed up.

“I got you something,” Fili said when he climbed into the passenger seat, his coat on his lap.

“But there are already presents under the tree!” Kili protested.

“This is for the tree.” Fili held out the small, neatly wrapped box. “Open it.”

Kili pulled the ribbon and popped the tape that held the cardboard box shut to reveal the Christmas ornament that Fili had brought home. Kili lifted the twig reindeer from the box. “I know just where he’ll go.” Then the reindeer was stored away and they were on their way home.

Ah sure. Herbalism is both a science and an art. No two herbalists practice in just the same way because the thinking processes & healing philosophies differ from person to person. So, I can recommend a few beginner-friendly books (though some are dense) which I personally found very useful in my own journey.

(Normally, I am primarily a book learner. But, as guided by my herbal coursework, I was encouraged to also learn about the herbs through direct experience and studying a variety of traditions & other herbalists. Herbalism is not properly studied when you just experience it on paper, I realized. So, I would recommend a similar thing for beginners: learn botany, plant identification, forgaging, gardening, medicine making, safety precautions, how to research herbs properly, and different traditional medicine systems [such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Unani-Tibb, Caribbean Bush Medicine, Western Herbalism, etc. It's especially best to understand how a certain herb was used on the land which it's native to]. Podcasts and articles can be good resources too. Most of all, deeply testing and experiencing herbs one-by-one is crucial in my view).

Behold, the king of online cartoons

Ex-Hanna-Barbera whiz Fred Seibert blazing a trail with YouTube network

A couple of times over the years, then-USA Today’s entertainment and tech reporter (and photographer) Jefferson Graham was nice enough to feature me in an article about the cartoons I was producing. First time was in the late 90s with “Oh Yeah! Cartoons,” but in 2015, with streaming video finally reaching the mainstream press (Channel Frederator actually started in 2005) and Graham’s animator son joining our network, he revisited.

LOS ANGELES — Fred Seibert wants you to have his card.

And his phone number. He even won't mind if we print his [email protected] e-mail address right here in USA TODAY.

Seibert, 63 is the online toon king, with 400 million views monthly to his Channel Frederator network on YouTube, but he's never sure where his next hit will come from.

So he's always out there looking, at schools, industry gatherings, book signings. You name it.

Next weekend, he'll be at the Vidcon convention near Los Angeles, a gathering of folks who make their living off YouTube, which is where most folks see his online `toons.

"I have no ideas," he says. "But I recognize talent."

That's for sure. Seibert, then president of Hanna-Barbera's cartoon studios in the 1990s, is credited with discovering Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the Family Guy, fresh from college, when he hired him to work on Hanna-Barbera cartoons.

For Seibert's "What a Cartoon!" series for the Cartoon Network, Seibert hit ratings gold, signing up the creators who churned out hits like "The Powerpuff Girls," "Dexter's Laboratory" and "Johnny Bravo." Their series debuted as shorts for first for Seibert's series.

He still serves as executive producer of "The Fairly OddParents," a TV series he began producing in 1998 when it debuted on his "Oh Yeah, Cartoons," series. It's been running ever since on Nickelodeon.

Seibert's biggest audiences, however, have come from online, to the tune of some 1.9 billion views for 'toons like the Bee and PuppyCat and Bravest Warriors.

We had Seibert as a guest on our #TalkingTech podcast in June. At the time, he was averaging 300 million monthly viewers to the Channel Frederator network. Now he's already up to 400 million monthly viewers, and predicts he'll top 700 million by year's end, and 1 billion by 2016.

The reason for the massive growth is that unlike before, when animation was targeted just to young kids, either for Saturday morning TV, and kid-based cartoon TV channels, anyone of all ages can view `toons online.

Seibert's Cartoon Hangover, a Frederator section where he shows the best of his `toons, bills itself as the channel for "cartoons that are too weird, wild, and crazy for television."

“Bee and PuppyCat,” about a young woman with a hybrid dog-cat, is written by Natasha Allegri, a woman in her 20s, about a character in her 20s, and thus, obviously not targeted to the traditional animation crowd.

"No matter what your interest online — whether it be anime, or science fiction or comedy cartoons, there is a place for you," Seibert says. "TV has a tough time supporting the sub-genres. Online is all about sub-genre."

Channel Frederator is what's known as a multi-channel network. Cartoons run on YouTube, but his network promotes them, sells ads and distributes the proceeds to some 2,000 of his video makers.

Through Frederator, the channel makers learn about which color to make their thumbnails to find larger YouTube audiences (he recommends yellow) and which keywords to use in the descriptions ("funny" always works, he says.)

"We give them the tools to grow their performance," he says.

Dominic Panganiban, a 24-year-old animator from Toronto, joined the Frederator network in November, and has seen his subscriber base grow ten times since.

He had been working with Full Screen, another multi-channel network that works with YouTube creators to help them monetize their videos and attract larger audiences.

"Frederator was a better fit, because they cater more towards animation channels," Panganiban says. Because Frederator attracts folks who enjoy cartoons, "I have more potential here."

By being part of the Frederator network, Australian animator Sam Green says he's learned about how to better promote his cartoons, and gotten access to a database of free music and sound effects to use in his cartoons.

He too has seen a spike in traffic.

Being with Seibert "helped me move from my mother's garage to affording my own apartment in the big city," he says.

How did the traffic for both creators go up so dramatically?

Seibert promoted the cartoons to his audience. With 2,000 cartoon makers, that's a lot to choose from. He says he'll plug as many of them as "show an interest" to growing their audience. He looks for people who post new work regularly, stay in touch, and ask "what we can do to help them more."

And despite the massive online audience, Seibert isn't making money yet, and doesn't think he will for another three years.

"Our cartoons are 3-4 minutes long, and the average American watches 6 hours of TV a day," he says. "We have a long way to go to even that out."
