If I had a nickel for every time the DCAU put Bruce and Dick in a love triangle (with each other’s love interests), I’d have two nickels, which is two too many.

Harley Quinn Headcanon AU #1
Tumblr media
After getting arrested for the FINAL time and completing her sentence and therapy and bill of sanity but on lifetime house arrest ( which after covid make me realize how bad prisoners have it as well and they need to iellegalize house arrest and prisoner being locked in their cell for 12 plus hrs a day because it's inhumane and cruel torture. but imma staybwithin the canon of the batman beyond 2.0 comics For the sake of context)
she decided to wrote a memoir on her life.
it was titled "The girl with a Clown tattoo".
Harley when she met the joker was so enamored with him she decided to get something that she felt would represent he love and how she felt about him and she got a tattoo thaw as located on her left shoulder.
The book was more about her life than it was about the Joker. she write about her childhood, and her life with the joker and away from him as well.
she didn't feel like she had the right to speak on behalf of him because his story is his story, and this is hers.
One of many detalls, she dies give light to, one detail she did mention is that out if their decade together she only sound about 5 years of actual time with him because of getting arrested and breaking up (however brief) .
and their sex life waist normalize most people sex life, th joker since wants emotionally available like most they ahd sex every once in a blue moon. (5 times total). yes they kissed and held eachother like a couple at times
but thats what started all of their fights was harley pushing for affection at a depth he wasn't able to Gove her.
( I dont feel like Harley would actually do this. It seems so pretnciosu and shallow and OOC for her but I was musing if she were to because im sure anyone would be curious ambit her rletaonship with him and want some "dirty details" but she's not greedy or atentionseeking so this just fantasy 'what if')

I’m not sure if this is something you’ve talked about before so sorry if it is, but I’ve just been reading a bunch of your Bruce and Dick centric posts and was wondering,
They are mutually codependent and there is SO MUCH genuine love there is between them, but obviously their relationship leads to a lot of hurt on both sides (I feel that Dick gets the shorter end of the stick there but anyway) and one of if not the main point of contention in their dynamic is the fact that Dick wants freedom and autonomy in a way that Bruce fears because of his own insecurity about Dick and his trauma regarding having a lack of control.
Do you think there could ever be a situation that would make either of them (personally I’d say likely Dick because again, in their dynamic Bruce mainly acts however he sees fit in order to keep Dick with him rather than anything else) permanently cut off their relationship? Either totally or just in a personal sense while still working together professionally as heroes.
Then as a follow up, if their relationship was cut off, how do you think this would affect both characters (and possibly how it would affect Dick’s dynamic with the Titans, considering how a big issue with them is how devoted Dick is to Batman)?
I was gonna say I can't think of one but then I remembered the Batman Beyond Comics!
But even the Batman Beyond comics where Dick and Bruce are estranged, they aren't able to provide a reasonable explanation for why Dick abandoned him.
In one of the two fates, Dick gets shot by the Joker
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman Beyond (2010) Issue #4
Which is not a great explanation because I know for a fact the cape is bulletproof because I've seen bullets bouncing off it. But also the purpose of Batman Beyond is that Bruce is alone and no longer Batman but the city still needs a Batman. Therefore Terry becomes Batman. If Dick stayed as Nightwing, then there really wouldn't be a need for Batman because Dick would just become Batman instead or pass it on to someone else. Bruce would still have his emotional support system and that can't happen. So the best writers could come up with to create an abandonment scenario is the bulletproof cape isn't bulletproof.
But even though Dick completely cuts off Dick, Bruce says in the continuing Batman comics in lieu of apology something along the lines of "you're still my heir, Dick." to which Dick just walks out and Bruce feels depressed. He could've taken Dick out of the will or cut him off too but until his death he kept waiting for Dick to come back even if he never admitted it. So yes, Dick is more likely to abandon Bruce under the extremely worst made up and not logically circumstances because even in the most nonsensical scenarios, it's impossible to write a comic where Bruce abandons Dick.
The second reason Dick leaves Batman is because Bruce slept with Barbara but worse tried to use that to prevent Dick from marrying her. Barbara explains the story to Terry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman 2.0 Issue #28
Now this, this is the believable part. Not Barbara cheating on Dick with Bruce but what comes after -
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman Beyond 2.0 Issue #28
It's Bruce using other people to get Dick to stay single. Bruce's attachment issues are out of this world.
He promised Barbara not to say anything and the second she left he ran to Dick to tell him everything first!
Even after Barbara cheated on Dick, which still isn't believable, it can be excused for a night of passion where she was aching and missing him. But what's Bruce's excuse? He missed Dick too but he has no love for Barbara and much more clear-minded. He slept with her knowing that Dick would eventually find out one day and he used that knowledge as a weapon to keep Dick from getting married. Bruce and Barbara both know they don't love each other and Bruce could care less that she's pregnant but the potential of manipulating Dick into staying single was evidently too good to pass up.
Literally why Bruce???
But putting aside how both of these circumstances technically shouldn't happen for the sheer reason that it doesn't make sense for them to, the only answer for when Dick would abandon Bruce or vice versa is never.
But let's say it did happen and something went so egregiously wrong that Dick left him. How does that affect relationships? One answer - everyone would unilaterally side with Dick. When Bruce fired Dick, Superman was ready to fight him (verbally). But if Bruce had done something so horrible as to get Dick to actually leave him forever, given how Dick sticks with Bruce through everything and is canonically stated as Bruce's confidant, then at that point Bruce has become irredeemable.
It's not a surprise at all that no one, absolutely no one, stays with Bruce in Batman Beyond. He's completely alone with no family or friends. Because if Dick refuses to stay with him, then who will?
But one thing always stays consistent no matter what happens between Dick and Bruce. Whether it's the past, present, or future because even if Dick abandons Bruce for reasons undefinable - Dick will always come back for the kids.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman Beyond (2012) Issue #23
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman Beyond 2.0 Issue #2
So no, realistically there isn't a circumstance in which Dick would abandon Bruce. In fact during Batman/Nightwing: Bloodborne, Bruce gets infected with a killer virus so Dick takes a vaccine that's been completely untested - purely experimental - and undergoes a blood transfusion with Bruce to save him.
Tumblr media
Batman/Nightwing: Bloodborne
"I've got nothing to lose."
Dick would give up everything for Bruce. Their blood transfusion gets interrupted halfway when villains try to kill them but Dick fights off like 50 people while having hallucinations, pain, and a high fever from the killer virus but he'll do anything if that's what it takes to save Bruce.
That kind of devotion doesn't die easily. They're both equally unhealthily overly attached to each other.

you know i often see people throwing around the claim "joker r*ped/sa'd barbara in tkj" (mainly to shame people for liking the joker or batjokes) even though alan moore has dedunked it at some point. like the only piece of media i can think of with joker as a rapist is the azzarello graphic novel which is shit and doesn't need to be accepted as canon. i know it's kinda of a touchy subject but i'd be interested to hear your thoughts
Well. You've pretty much said it, to be honest.
Even a cursory Google search will reveal that Azzarello's Joker (2008) is a one-off, non-canon story. The just as much stand-alone sequel, Batman: Damned has a grieving Harley Quinn almost force herself on Bruce, and yet I haven't heard people say Harley is a rapist. Hell, didn't Batman and Harley Quinn (2017) have Harley and Nightwing sleep together... with pretty dubious consent on Dick's side? And yet fans are able to acknowledge that these are not canon storylines and that the writer matters a lot-- in the case of the latter, it's co-written by Bruce Timm, who is infamous for his shitty portrayal of female characters (also see the animation Batman: The Killing Joke, in which Barbara very assertively has sex with Batman, because that's of course the only way a woman can exercise power). Actually, Barbara's character has suffered so much... there's even Batman Beyond 2.0 #28, in which Bruce apparently got Barbara pregnant, Dick's girlfriend at the time.
But we all dismiss these storytelling choices because we know they're idiotic. They go against the core of the characters, simple as that. Why is Joker not allowed the same? While what he canonically did to Barbara in TKJ was horrible, rape did not happen, and that's a fact. Any other implications of sexual assault can only be connected to Frank Miller's writing in the TDKR series (not canon), or that horrible (and again, not canon) book adaptation of TKJ by Christa Faust and Gary Phillips. Unfortunately, there are always some writers who think that it's just darker and grittier and cooler, more shocking to have Joker attempt rape or resort to sexual means of intimidation; though it's funny how it happens that these are also generally controversial writers for their sexist depictions of women.
But we do know why Joker is not afforded the same kind of treatment as other characters who got butchered by out-of-character stories, canon or otherwise. He's become the punching bag of the DC fandom; it's so easy to proclaim loud and proud these days how much you hate the Joker and want him dead. If you're an anti and looking to feel morally righteous and signal to your echo chamber how good and pure you are, it's a low hanging fruit to latch onto Joker and criticize him for all he's done. The problem, of course, is when these people start attacking actual, real-life fans over their fictional preferences, shipping or otherwise.
But to give a more general conclusion, and my actual opinion on the matter: Joker is a master manipulator. His main schtick is literally getting Batman to kill him by orchestrating all manner of situations; he manipulates his doctors, his henchmen, he manipulates Gotham itself through the media on countless occasions. The very reason why he did what he did to Barbara in TKJ was to manipulate her father into having a mental breakdown. Joker picks people to break and then breaks them psychologically, that is his MO. What he wants is to expose the people around him, he wants to show that deep down, everyone is rotten.
It probably becomes obvious why rape is inconsistent with this mindset. Joker isn't the kind of monster to make things happen by brute force, he's the kind of monster to manipulate people into the worst versions of themselves and then laugh at them as they hate themselves for it. He'll murder and torture and imply any manner of atrocity to make that happen, but the source of his glee is seeing people fall into the same dark pit, devoid of humanity, he's chosen to live in. (And don't even get me started on the fact that Joker was canonically shown to have been a victim of sexual assault himself as a child, in Batman: Streets of Gotham. As an adult, he's depicted as gruesomely taking revenge on the man who did it. Something tells me there's more than one reason why Joker would not resort to rape, and it goes beyond MOs or agendas.)

This is a friendly reminder that RWBY Beyond is extended universe and not part of the main series and so the writers' choice to put important things - like Yang and Ruby addressing what happened in V9 - is quite a bold move. Like, I'm still expecting everything that happened in V9 to NOT get glossed over in V10, because I don't want to have to do homework and get subscriptions and watch YouTube videos in order for the main show to be even sort of close to good.
And before anyone comes in talking about 'they have no time anymore' and 'they need to use V10 to tie off all these important threads' etcetera, they made their own bed. Like maybe RWBY Beyond wouldn’t have to include conversations that should be in the main show if the writers hadn't wasted their time on things like Jaune angst 2.0 or Little/Somewhat or getting their stuff back from a raccoon or unnecessary exposition on where the gods came from. The writers have NEVER been good at managing their time, and it results in things like them trying to do damage control in the silly extended content shorts because they forgot to write Yang to be a caring sister in the main show.
And then fans turn around and are like 'I can't believe that people are complaining that Yang comes across as a bad sister in the main show, didn't they see how she cringed when Ruby was in danger in the second Batman crossover side movie? Didn't they see the follow-up short to Sun and Neptune's mustache adventures?"
Say it with me; the main show ought to be able to stand on its own as a good piece of media without expecting fans to do homework.

Tools of the Trade Part 1: Nightwing's Costume
Tumblr media
Nightwing has used six main suits over the years, as well as several up-armored variants. In general, his suit is a tri-layered, insulated, Nomex/Kevlar body armor. Most versions can heat up in the cold, resist bullets, resist flames, and electrocute enemies. Certain versions of the suit also included a glider function, such as the second blue/gold suit worn in the 1990s. The third version, which was blue/black and included the fan-favorite finger stripes, was made of "a controlled photo-chromic fabric" which could shift the colors of the suit from blue to navy for increased stealth capabilities. Nightwing also possesses up-armored variants of his traditional black/blue suits, seen in situations when he was facing threats of immense power, such as in Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day, and Convergence: Nightwing/Oracle. In a potential future in Nightwing: The New Order, Nightwing also designed a more high-tech, armored version of his suit. Most versions of his suit, including the original, the fingerstripes, and the New 52, use gauntlets to carry Nightwing's gadgets.

In the two DC events Dark Knights: Metal and Dark Knights: Death Metal, Nightwing wore specialized suits. The Rebirth/Infinite Frontier era version of the suit is reminiscent of his black/blue fingerstripes suit, but no longer uses gauntlets to store his gadgets. This incarnation includes an in-suit defibrillator, as well as a small backpack for Nightwing's sticks and other gadgets. The Fingerstripes 2.0 suit is similar, but has been upgraded by Mr. Terrific to be thinner and have more resistance to bullets and knives, as well as an in-suit glider.

Future State: Nightwing #1
Later on in the Future State timeline, Dick escaped Gotham and joined his old Titans friends. During this time, the years of trauma, from the death of Batman to the collapse of the Titans Academy weighed heavily on Dick, and he switched to a modified version of his second blue and gold Nightwing suit, which included a combination of his and Deathstroke's mask, as well as a gun.

The Mask:
Nightwing's domino mask attaches to his face with an adhesive, and has a built in radio, thermal vision, self destruct, night vision, and build in protective lenses. The mask of the red New 52 version of his suit could also pair with a syringe in his glove to perform chemical analysis.

BATMAN BEYOND/TERRY McGINNIS; a reading list
Tumblr media
So, you're interested in the Batman of the future! A series which takes place in the far off year of... 2039? Listen, the original show came out in the nineties, you gotta give it some slack.
Hopefully here I've compiled a nice list of the comics, as well as any extra appearances of Terry, Batman of Neo-Gotham.
Who is Terry McGinnis?
Terry McGinnis is our seventeen year old protagonist. He meets Bruce Wayne after the old man helps him in beating back a gang who take after the late Joker, and in helping Bruce into his manor discovers that he was formerly Batman. After his father's murder, Terry steals the hi-tech batsuit in order to hunt down the people responsible for his death. In doing so he sees Gotham for how corrupt it really is, and becomes the Tomorrow Knight and Batman of the future.
Where to start?
The best place to start is with the 1999 animated series of the same name. It takes place firmly in the DCAU, alongside Batman: The Animated Series and The Adventure continues, Superman TAS, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
The show goes over three seasons, with cameos in a spin off called The Zeta Files (which only ran for a season) Static Shock (ep, Future Shock) and Justice League Unlimited (The Once and Future Thing; part 2, Epilogue) and a movie, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.
While the cameos are more optional, you don't really need to watch them, though Epilogue is treated as the 'end' of both JLU and Batman Beyond. ROTJ also has two different versions, a censored and uncensored one.
You can watch it on WatchCartoonsOnline, though I'd be a little careful with using that site. If you also have MAX, it should be available for streaming on there.
Comics wise, I apologize for not putting individual issues. I've also included links to readcomicsonline for each comic.
DCAU Tie-In Comics
These tie in directly with the show, and as far as I know, were released at the same time.
Batman Beyond I
Batman Beyond II
Superman Adventures #64
Unlimited and 2.0
The unlimited and 2.0 comics take place post show, and are in the same universe as the DCAU so I personally consider it canon to the series.
Batman Beyond: Hush Beyond (2010)
Batman Beyond: Industrial Revolution (2011)
Batman Beyond: 10,000 Clowns (2012)
Batman Beyond Unlimited
Batman Beyond 2.0
Justice League Beyond
Justice League Beyond 2.0
(and optional, the Superman Beyond comics. I think Terry only has some cameos, but it's always fun to hang out in the world a little bit with different characters)
Superman Beyond 2011
Superman Beyond 2012
N52 Futures End and Rebirth
Futures end is... personally, I'm not a fan. While Terry isn't Batman for the entirety of 2015, 2015 takes place in the aftermath of futures end, while Rebirth is the aftermath of 2015, only a few months later.
N52 Futures End #1-17 #18-30 #31-48
Batman Beyond (2015)
Batman Beyond Rebirth
Neo-Year
A reboot of BB, Urban Legends #7 and Neo-Year set off as Terry's own personal sort of 'year one' as Batman, one without Bruce. I'm personally highly enjoying it so far, and I feel like it does treat his character very well. Neo-Gothic is currently on-going.
Urban Legends #7
Batman Beyond: Neo-Year
Batman Beyond: Neo Gothic
Optional Individuals and Cameos
Batman #700
Superman/Batman 2010 Annual #4
Milestones 30th Anniversary A story with Static and Terry
Batman 2016 #135
Countdown #21 (Just a brief cameo)
Justice League vs The Legion of Superheroes #3
Batman: Beyond the White Knight
This is as comprehensive of a list as I can get, including almost every appearance of Terry's that I can think of. I hope that this helps anyone who is interested about Terry, he's personally one of my favorite characters and I think he's really fun and compelling.
