there is no point to 'self diagnose' yourself with anything if you have no incentive to seek medical assistance or atleast do any other forms of self help and inner healing. at that point you're simply looking for a label to identify yourself with as if it's a personality trait, and not an actual disability. it's trashy at best, anti recovery at worst.

Before you define yourself as being anti-self-diagnosis and pro-psychiatry or therapy remember,
to search about psychiatric hospitals and how is the treatment of the disorders outside the US, in third-world countries (like where I live),
listen to people traumatized by therapy, especially kids,
and if possible search up the about how's education of neurodivergences and the approach of neurotypical to neurodivergent people in countries other than US again,
acknowledge that MANY therapists won't respect you and your choices, and they don't need to choose for you what you should and shouldn't do about your life choices, it makes some people suffer,
the majority of doctors and a lot of people even neurodivergent ones won't respect your spiritual beliefs if they're about how your neurodivergence originated and it's wrong because it also hurts people, and in countries other than US there are more types of religions/spiritualities that don't see some things as a disorder,
and in the end remember that no it's not because they're doctors that means that they're always right or know about your brain better than you, you should explore yourself more.
Do it all with empathy, sympathy, and kindness

If you are a physically disabled peep who thinks pd folk are above mentally disabled folk in the struggle? Go fuck yourself and dont talk to me. (Second image example)
If you are a mentally disabled peep who thinks md folk are above physically disabled folk in the struggle? Go fuck yourself and dont talk to me.(1st image example)
Disability is disability. Diff shit, sure. But same stink and equally as valid. And yes I get peeps have fucked each other up before in the struggle for rights and humanity before. Which is exactly what Im talking about rn. Because its that punching down bullshit again. Walking over each other and then pointing out how "well were better than them atleast?" Shove it up your ass if you got one. Or any other hole. Im not picky.
Were in this shit. If we like it or not. And we gotta figure it out together. But youre scum if you think demonizing others makes you a punk. Or a real activist or whatever.
And yeah. That included self diagnosed folk too. Diagnoses are a privilege. Hard to come by. And sometimes very dangerous. And if youre a real one you know that.
So shut the fuck up and quit being assholes. Fuck the system up. Not each other.

Image Description: A pale woman in a striped pink and white tank top with darker pink tone pants stands besides a man in a wheel chair. She has a ponytail, is looking at him to her right with both hands raised in anger and with frown. Man sits beside her with tan skin, an uncomfortable frown, full body cast and neck brace. There is a text bubble leading from the woman asking "Why don't you just try harder?" (The words "try harder" is underlined for emphasis.) Text at the top reads [#mentalillnessfeelslike]. There is a logo at the bottom left for Mental Health America. And the artists watermark on the bottom right that reads [Gemma Correll]
Tumblr media
Image description: There is a plain white background with pink and black text. The pink is in a more elegant font. The top line is in pink and larger than the rest. It reads, "I AM SICK". The next line is in the smaller simple, black font. It reads, "I'm not stupid or mentally disabled. I'm not crazy. It's not stress, it's not in my head. I'm not causing this to myself. I'm not making it up. I'm learning about myself everyday. How well I deal with this sickness. I can still do things for myself. I like my independence, but sometimes may need your help." Then the font changes to an equally small pink, elegant font and reads, "Don't take that as weakness, or that I'm giving up. I'm trying the best I can." Finally, in the black font again it reads, "We all need a little boost from time to time, lend a hand. You never know how much it could mean."

Finally got a call back from the autism assessment people. And what do you know? They said that insurance wouldn’t cover it so if we want to actually get me in to get tested it’ll be 4,000 US$ out of pocket. My parents said we can’t afford that right now.
This is what we mean when we say diagnosis is a privilege. Because in the US, it literally costs thousands of dollars for them to even look at you. And even if you can afford that, or your insurance will pay for it (most probably won’t), you still have to deal with doctors who have a very narrow view of what autism looks like, both in how it presents itself symptom-wise, and in how the people who have it look physically. If you do not fit the stereotype of Smart, but Socially Awkward White Boy, there is a chance they will reject you outright.
“Diagnosis is a privilege” doesn’t mean that only privileged people get diagnosed, or that your life must have been easy and perfect if you yourself were able to get one. It means that not everyone with certain conditions/disorders/neurodivergencies is able to get diagnosed with them for a variety of reasons that don’t include “they’re faking it”. And that is literally just a fact.
Like, seriously, what do people who think diagnosis isn’t a privilege think getting diagnosed is like? Like, with some disorders it’s much easier. I was diagnosed with depression the first day I saw my first psychiatrist. But most of the disorders they always claim people are faking (autism, adhd, did) are actually very difficult to get diagnosed with just because it takes so long and can often be very expensive. Like, I’ve literally been waiting to get diagnosed for almost half a year. And now they say they won’t even try unless we fork over $4,000. People who are against self-diagnosis are so fucking dense. Like, what do you want me to do? Say I don’t have autism because I couldn’t pay them to check??? Cause only rich people can have autism I guess./s
Knowing that I’m autistic has helped me understand a lot about myself that I didn’t before. It has helped me realize that some of my weak points (not being able to work with vague instructions, being very sensitive to criticism, etc.) have a reason behind them and other people experience them in similar ways. I am autistic. I do not have any doubts about being autistic. And I do not have to prove to strangers on the internet that I am autistic before I get to talk about my experiences with it without being relentlessly scrutinized.
Edit: Been seeing some ppl talk about this phrase in a way I hadn’t before and I want to clarify: getting diagnosed is not always actually good, especially when you’re very young and you don’t get to decide whether you want it or not. What I meant in this post is that access to diagnosis is a privilege. Hope that clears things up if you had questions. This was mainly meant to demonstrate that ppl who are against self-dx need to get their facts straight. I’m not actually here to talk about the privilege aspect very much either (I didn’t realize there was discourse there), but in short: it’s complicated, but it is often a result of some privilege that ppl are able to get diagnosed, especially later in life. I also want to make it clear that it’s very valid to not want a dx. I actually went back and forth on it myself bc of all the fucked up laws and discrimination and stuff. (Which is yet another reason self-dx is valid and sometimes the best option) So yeah. Idk, just wanted to make it clear what I’m trying to say.

I really don’t think pro self diagnosers realize that diagnosis serves an actual purpose beyond slapping a label on an observed experience.
It’s not just something to call yourself or identify as, it has real effects on the world and life you live beyond simply getting to call yourself something.

On self diagnosis
I'm confused as to why the self diagnosis of a mental disorder is acceptable, yet self diagnosing a physical illness is dangerous. Why is it that people think of mental disorders as not dangerous and even life ruining if severe?
And why is the phrase "self diagnosis is the first step to a real diagnosis" so popular? It's not true. You don't self diagnose before going to the doctor's: you do your research and propose the idea of having said illness or disorder to a professional. Suspecting to have a disorder isn't self diagnosing, if anything this really shows how people always take everything to an extreme to prove their point.

My own sister is now telling me she's autistic based on tiktoks. Her reasoning -and I swear I'm not making this up- is that she goes to the gym. She's calling it a hyperfixation.
I've known this girl my whole life; she's the least autistic mfer I've ever met. But one of her friends showed her a tiktok once (I'm not kidding) and now she won't hear otherwise.
And this is the same girl who gets mad when I can't read the room. The same girl who gets angry when I meltdown. And she's calling herself "autistic" because she saw a tiktok with presumably a girl with a face full of makeup and six pounds of styling gel in her hair and thinks the chick is actually autistic like she claims to be.
I'm just so fucking angry and so fucking tired. Y'all "self diagnosis" assholes are so full of bullshit and ableism and you won't even acknowledge it

Probably the first bit of discourse that I'm going to post on here intentionally, but as someone who used to self identify as having did before I got a proper diagnosis, I really just wish people had the nuance to understand that you can assume that you might be dealing with something, but you are not capable of diagnosing yourself with a complex dissociative disorder the same way someone who is gone through 12 years of med school and a psychiatric rotation would be able to, and it really really bothers me seeing people trying really hard to push themselves into acting how they think someone with DID would actually act while ignoring that they have very textbook symptoms of things like a personality disorder or complex PTSD or even other dissociative and delusional disorders that simply are not DID.
I'm not saying that self diagnosis is always invalid, especially for things like autism where the majority of providers don't know the updated criteria for diagnosis and it's something that tends to not really go away or change, but there's a big difference between my partner who hasn't gotten into a psychiatrist self-identifying as autistic because it allows him to get the things that he needs to be able to function and someone who has access to psychiatrist but refuses to go to one or who does see a psychiatrist but refuses to believe them purposely trying to push a narrative so that they get attention online from a specific community.
I did that as a teenager. I used to and still do dissociate very frequently and whenever I was a teenager I thought that everyone with dissociations had dissociative identity disorder so I started making up alters like the way a lot of teenagers on tiktok and on here do, but unlike most of those teenagers, I was actually in psychiatric treatment and acting out this way didn't get me temporary Fame. It got me hospitalized, forced into a RTF where I was horrifically abused for a year, and then it caused me to go to foster care. It also caused years of not getting proper treatment because you can't get treated for what's actually going on with you while you're obsessed with a diagnosis that you don't have.
Self diagnosis and lying about my experiences and condition as a teenager cost me 2 years and 5 months of my life. People who are still doing this and encouraging it are feeding into ableism and they're making their situations worse.
If you want to diagnosis yourself with a debilitating mental health condition, eventually you're going to be treated like you have it. And I don't mean attention and Tik-Tok followers. I mean like, not being able to drive. Not being independent. Long term inpatient stays. Residential treatment facilities. Medication. Therapies. Debt. Facing ableism. Actual diagnosed disabled people seeing you as mocking them. Facing hate crimes. Having your life ruined and your rights taken.
Maybe you should consider just getting a real diagnosis instead. It's easier than leaving your actual condition undiagnosed and untreated so you can get the attention you think is trendy without trying to get better.
(And inb4 "waaaahhhhh not everyone can access services!!!1!!!" If you're not working and can't get workplace insurance, go to your local assistance office and apply for medical assistance, and then call the number on your insurance card to get on a wait list for a provider. If my broke, crippled ass can manage that, so can you. If you can't, get a caseworker to manage it for you. Google "mental health case manager" and find who's closest, they're county funded and their job is to help you get services. There's no excuse for being a burden on the system, those around you, and people with actual diagnosed disabilities.)

Hot Take:
There is a difference between mentioning that you might be autistic/etc and to please be patient and going all "I'M AUTISTIC (self-diagnosed!!!1)".
Doing research on a condition you think you might have and mentioning this is okay (such as, for example, saying "I might be autistic, please be patient with me"). Taking pride in this and treating it as if it's just as valid as a diagnosis, or pretending you know better than a doctor with a PHD (or just saying that self DXing is more valid than being diagnosed by doctors, or that professional diagnoses can actually cause you harm (My dude, do you even know how delusional you sound? Diagnoses exist so you can get help)), or that it's okay to "stop at the first step" and not actually seek the help you need.
I've seen way too many people, especially on Toyhouse and Tumblr, mention their "self-diagnosis" in such narcissistic and completely delusional ways that it just makes my blood boil. and yeah, I understand that some people can't get diagnosed because they're poor, but that's still no excuse to not actively seek help for what you have.

if anyone wants to explain self diagnosis to me, that would be great.
because self diagnosis does nothing, except for telling people you have a disorder
you cant get medical help for a disorder until you're diagnosed and offered a prescription
people will start to blame their mishaps on a disorder that they may not have
there are very similar disorders
people will convince themselves that they have a disorder, even after 3+ psychs have told them otherwise
a psych will know more than you, unless you too are a psych, which is why you should seek out someone who has been in the psychology field longer than you
"cant afford a diagnosis," but again, self diagnosis doesn't help you
"cant get a diagnosis because of where i am located" again... self diagnosis doesn't fix that
"cant get a diagnosis because of my assigned gender at birth..." like i said. it doesn't change anything
all you are doing with self diagnosis, is telling people that you have an undiagnosed disorder.
the only exception i could see, is if you're telling people you are not getting treatment for your selfdx disorder, but even then, that isn't much of an excuse, because this leads to blaming shit on your selfdx disorder. blaming shit on your disorder isn't a great way of looking at life, and trust me, even under treatment, i blame many of my faults that still come at me on my disorders. if you want to get better, you have to go for it. youre allowed to search up shit that may have suggestions to help those with the disorder you say you have, and you can try those out. because telling people that you aren't getting treatment for your disorder, can also allow them to be your walking mat, or excuse shit you've done because you told them you have this disorder, and aren't getting treatment for it.
tldr: i don't get the point of selfdx
if i missed anything, tell me. if you have a rebuttal, send an ask if you prefer to stay anonymous, or reblog with your response.

I don't know why these bitches act so surprised when they get harassed for dating a 15-year-old girl while being a grown-ass adult and their self-diagnosis doesn't work for shit. Do you think I'm not going to call you out despite you being a self-diagnosed ASPD dumbfuck? Bitch I thought you said you have no morals so when I treat you like you deserve to be then you bitch and whine? Also, you started spamming me with useless and pathetic attempts at harassment in my asks and comments because I showed screenshots of you being a disgusting bitch.
To the little piece of shit cum dumpster stupid ass incubator whore that's 15 but to be quite frank looks 30 at best. You send your pedophile boyfriend after my ass and have him change his profile layout because he got harassed and also because you're too much of a pussy and cock slut to have a conversation with me. I hope you rot, Even if you post an apology which, to be frank, is going to be mostly you whining and talking about how much of a “bigger person” you're being to get the air up your puss and cum filled battered abused cunt. How pathetic do you have to be to fake disorders for sympathy points when you get in trouble? I don't give a fuck if you're a victim you're still a piece of shit and I'll treat you like it. Fuck y'all feelings.
Also sending your friends to send me hate in my inbox when using anon is a low fucking blow. You must be a neanderthal to do that dumb shit. You also don't want to separate fiction from reality maybe because you're mentally slow.

Your bad experiences with doctors and/or lack of self advocacy in the doctors office is not a reason to support self diagnosis.
Like I fucking get it I complained for years about symptoms that were impeding my daily functioning and literally ruining my life and I wasn’t even diagnosed until like a few years ago. I’m still trying to get diagnosis for a handful of other lifelong things. I know it’s not always easy to get properly diagnosed. I know it can be costly. It can be time consuming. It can be a hassle and embarrassing and sometimes you’re just not taken seriously.
The difference is I wasn’t claiming to actually have any specific illness. I wasn’t pretending to be a spokesperson for people with any condition. I wasnt building a career or influencer profile on having any kind of illness. I specifically said that I was experiencing symptoms but hadn’t had a diagnosis when I engaged with posts or communities that I related to as someone experiencing symptoms of certain disorders.
It really isn’t that hard to have some respect for people and communities you claim to be a part of. Especially if you are profiting off of or benefiting from it in some way, whether it be monetarily or socially. And you can’t be upset when someone who spent years trying to get a diagnosis to get treatment for a condition that was destroying their lives gets miffed at you for claiming to have any kind of condition too because you read webmd and don’t plan to seek diagnosis because all you want is to tack the label onto your social bios or use it for your dumbass aesthetic.

Can someone explain self diagnosis to me?
Hello! You can call me Liv. Lately, the topic of self diagnosis has been appearing everywhere. Reddit, Twitter, TikTok, even this very website! I’ve seen people both for and against it, but neither side explain why they think that about self diagnosis. Remember, these are genuine questions, so please don’t get mad. Also, please forgive me if my phrasing on questions are a bit wrong.
So for both sides, this is your chance to explain your side. You don’t have to answer every question, as some of these questions can get pretty heavy.
Let’s start off with something light.
For both/neutral:
What is self diagnosis?
Why do you think it has gotten popular online recently?
For self diagnosed people:
Gentle reminder that you don’t have to answer all of these questions. These questions can get very heavy. If you start feeling bad during these questions, take a break. If it becomes too much for you, you don’t have to respond.
What condition are you self diagnosed with, if you are?
Why do you think you have that condition?
Why don’t you get a professional diagnosis or an evaluation?
I saw some self diagnosed people say they can’t afford an evaluation for their self diagnosis. Some medical insurance offer insurance for evaluations on disorders, depending on the insurance. If you said above that you can’t afford it and you have medical insurance, why can’t you use it? If you said that you aren’t self diagnosed, why do you think people don’t use their medical insurance? Please skip if you don’t have medical insurance or didn’t say that you can afford it.
I saw some people say they don’t have an official diagnosis because they aren’t easily accessible. I can agree that the wait lists for evaluations are very long, making it difficult for a diagnosis. However, I saw that a good chunk of self diagnosed people are still in school. In some states, if a teacher says that they suspect that you might be struggling due to a disability (diagnosed or not), they can sometimes bring the school psychologist to evaluate you based on educational need. It isn’t an official diagnosis, but if the hypothetical student is struggling, it might get them an IEP if the school district deems it necessary. There are also websites made and run by actual psychologists,(for example, ADHDonline) that can evaluate you for the condition you think you might have. You pay for it, and they ask you questions and you give each question answers. Some questions ask you about any symptoms you had in your childhood, your medical and developmental history, and other things asked in an actual evaluation. Some questions even have you write your responses. Then they send your answers to an actual psychologist that is running the website to look at, and they see if you might have the condition. If the test says you don’t have it, if the symptoms are severe enough, they look and see if you have a different condition. Then if the test comes back positive, they offer treatment like online therapy from actual psychologists. If you said in the above question that evaluations are hard to get, why aren’t you looking into other options? If you said that you aren’t self diagnosed with anything, why do you think that people don’t seek other options for diagnosis?
Some people say they didn’t get an evaluation because they don’t trust doctors. But these doctors spent years of their lives studying these conditions. They took tests on physical, mental, and developmental disorders. They had to pass said tests. They learned every symptom of every common condition, then they learned about other conditions with similar symptoms, and learned how to differentiate between the conditions. Once they passed medical school, they had to become a resident. They observed doctors in their chosen specialty diagnose people with conditions, and they learned how to diagnose people properly. People that self diagnose have not gone through the same training that doctors did. In the above question, if you said that you don’t trust doctors, why do you think you know more about your self diagnosis than a doctor would?
Some conditions share symptoms with other conditions. To give one example, autism can look like ADHD, Avoidant Personality Disorder, OCD, Schizophrenia, and other conditions. And some people with a condition like, for example, autism don’t even know about their own symptoms that are noticed by other people. How are you 100% sure you have the condition that you are self diagnosed with? Have you researched other conditions that are in some way related to your self diagnosed condition? If so, what makes you think that you don’t have these conditions? For people who aren’t self diagnosed, what are your thoughts?
How do your symptoms of your self diagnosed condition affect your life? Do they make your life more difficult in some way?
Have you told your family about your self diagnosis?
How can other people best make you comfortable?
Do you have anything else to add?
For anti self diagnosers:
Gentle reminder that you don’t have to answer all of these questions. These questions can get very heavy. If you start feeling bad during these questions, take a break. If it becomes too much for you, you don’t have to respond.
Why are you against self diagnosis?
Are you professionally diagnosed with any conditions (answering this question is completely optional).
Some people don’t have medical insurance, and are unable to afford an evaluation. For people who can’t afford evaluations for symptoms that are affecting their lives, what are your suggestions for these people?
Some people can’t easily get an appointment for an evaluation. I already named a few options in the pro diagnosis section, but I might’ve missed a few options. What are your suggestions for these people who are forever stuck in the wait list for an evaluation?
Some self diagnosers say that the evaluation process is sexist and racist. Statistically, women are less likely to get a diagnosis of a condition like autism and ADHD than men. People of color are also more likely to get misdiagnosed than white people. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? If you agree, what are your suggestions for women and people of different races trying to get an evaluation for a condition to make sure they get the help they need?
Some doctors give people the wrong diagnosis and give them the wrong medication. What are your suggestions to people that got a diagnosis for a condition that they think might be wrong? If the medication they were given was harming them in some way, what do you suggest?
Some people argue that a diagnosis will cause them to not be taken seriously and close doors that they would’ve had if they didn’t get a diagnosis. Statistically, autistic people are more likely to be unemployed than neurotypical people. Do you agree or disagree? If you agree, what are your suggestions to those people who had doors closed because of their diagnosis of people who fear that will happen if they get a diagnosis?
Do you have anything else to add?
To the people who have responded, thank you so much for your response!
Note: I edited the post a bit for clarification and better phrasing.
