#and then the deadline also forces me to try to write it fast and short

There's always a danger of caring too much about a story, and then getting paralyzed by the need to do it justice, so it never gets written.
I've solved this problem in the past by writing stories so fast that I don't have time to get too invested, or writing stories that I'm not that attached to.
But maybe the trick is to love the story so much that I want to share it any way I can, even if it's imperfect. To feel that any version of this story is better than the story never getting written at all. To get out of my own way and stop worrying about what other people will think of my writing, or even what I think of my writing, and love the story for its own sake, love the readers enough to want to have the joy of sharing the story with them.
Maybe it'll work. Maybe it won't. But so far it feels like a much better approach.
#adventures in writing#i think inklings has finally born fruit for me#other years i've stayed far away from beloved story concepts#for just this reason#and then i mentally shelved most of those story concepts#recognizing i'd likely never write them in a way that lives up to my imagination#and that probably gave me the distance i needed to pick some of them up again#for one thing the short time frame of inklings forces me to get down to the heart of the concept to fit it into a short story#and the long development time means i've had time to figure out what the core of the concept *is*#what keeps this story lingering in my imagination; which means i know what the good parts are#and then the deadline also forces me to try to write it fast and short#because if i don't write it for inklings i likely never will#and that's a tragedy i want to avoid#having such a clear concept of the story's core#means i can put up with ugly haphazard drafts#because i know what the overall story feels like; i've had years to develop it#so instead of a bad draft proving a story's not worth writing#i *know* that the story's worth writing because it's stuck with me this long#so the ugly drafts are just the building blocks necessary to create the final product#of course the danger is that i'll put out a story and it won't be as cool outside my head#and people will hate this piece of my soul i've poured out to them#but if i love it enough maybe it'll reach that special status#where it means so much to me personally that the wider audience reaction doesn't matter#but before i worry about this i gotta write a draft first

Since I'm such a huge nerd for this, I've compiled a list of 10 different traits that characterize my #quirkiness:
Generic autism metaphors: I have trouble "processing" information and "reading" body language
Challenge-seeking (ex. I'm working on a new hobby called "jumping into the sea," which involves heading to the water's edge and just jumping into the sea)
Seeking solitude: I love sitting alone in a room and looking at my phone, but I'm not good at conversing with other people.
Stiff face: I wear my "poker face" on a regular basis so that no one can tell what I'm thinking, which is just as well, since I don't know what I'm thinking.
Prone to slow-mo replays: I will replay the same image or idea over and over in my mind in slow motion.
Probability scales: This relates to the player character in a video game, who has a constant probability of dying or winning, as time goes on. I'm like that.
Mechanical tendency: When someone else shows me how to do something, I will only remember the steps once or twice, and after that I have to write things down.
Good at making it: I do a lot of "thinking fast" and "critical analysis," and I tend to be an above-average manipulator. I'm very good at schoolwork, but I'm also very bad at it, because when I do it I don't do it well. I try to do my best when I need to get something done, which usually means I'm doing nothing, as I don't get anything done.
Determined: I tend to put things off until last minute. I hate making decisions and then have to live with them, so I procrastinate. When the deadline approaches, I start to hyperfocus and get a ton of stuff done in a very short time, and then I get high on adrenaline and accomplish the impossible.
Social outcast: I am very lonely in that I hate being by myself, but I hate being with other people, too. It's the worst of both worlds, where I need to have a lot of alone time, but if I'm alone for too long I get antsy and need to do something with other people, but if I spend too much time with other people my mental health suffers. I would rather be all alone in a room and be able to come out and talk to people when I feel like it. But in real life I'm forced to spend time with people and only spend the little time I get with them on Twitter. The result is that I end up feeling like a supervillain who is incredibly lonely but for mysterious reasons is unable to make friends.
Does this get closer to "quirkiness" or "strangeness"?

Let’s Strike a Deal
A/N: This is late, I know. If you have not realized from before, I’m really bad at meeting deadlines. Well, at least deadlines that I’ve created for myself to follow because I like to procrastinate things and frankly… what am I gonna do to myself? Band myself from tea until I’ve written a chapter? I don’t have the self control for that! And life is hectic. But you know, enough with my excuses and onto the story. Hope you enjoy. I always love feedback so please be sure to leave a comment! ALSO I wanted to give a TRY (key word) to first person. If I don’t like it... I might change it, idk. I should never write anything at 3am as per evidence below, especially without editing lmao
Pair: CEO!Tom x Reader
Synopsis: Y/N, the small town of Hawkshead girl trying to make her way in the big city of Westminster, London. Not as easy as she thought. When things start to take a turn for the worst one afternoon and only one man in the crowd of hundreds decides to help her, she does something rather uncharacteristic and gives her savor her number in case he could ever use help of his own. Course, she never expected for him to actually call her out on it.

My time was limited. There was nothing left that had to be done here or anything left to pack. Everything I’ve ever owned sat in a car on the way to my new apartment and last of the suitcases were in the bed of my brothers pickup at this very moment while I sat on the floor of my room. There wasn’t anything left for me here, I knew that, but it was still difficult to say goodbye to the place that carried so many of my favorite memories and the imprints of my childhood that still were splayed around the surrounding room.
There were two dents in the wall right in front of me from when I was ten and hit my head after tripping on one of my toys, thumbtack holes that littered everywhere above the bed from forts that I would make with my brothers and friends, nail polish that was spilled on the carpet from times when I was too distracted with talking than keeping the bottle up straight, my engraved initials on the windowsill. The memories that I had made in this room were countless and they were all absolutely priceless.
“Y/N!” I heard your mother call from the living room, her voice was slightly hoarse from held back emotion and it broke my heart to hear her like that. “You got to get going, dear! You’ll miss your train if you wait much longer to head out.”
Taking a deep breath and slowly standing from the, now old, bed I made my way toward the door, feet dredging behind me and scuffing the floor as I walked out. “I know, Mama. I’m just-” the words caught in my throat and I was at a loss. “I’m really going to miss you guys so much.”
“Oh stop it, you’re gonna make me cry if you keep on like that,” She said giving a tight hug before pushing me out the front door. “You are going to love it in London so much you’re not even gonna be thinking about us here, so get goin’. Your brothers already waiting for you in the car.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at her antics, “I love you Mama! I’ll call you when I get there!”
Jumping into the passenger seat of the truck, I waved final goodbyes from the window, dramatically blowing kisses as the car started to drive away.
“You better!” She exclaimed, watching as we pulled out and down the road.
“She is going to be a mess when I get back home. I can’t believe you’re going to leave me to deal with that alone!” Christian, stuck driving you to the train station much to his dismay, gave you a mocking glare. “After all the things I’ve done for your, this is how you choose to repay me? I’m pretty sure I’m getting the short end of the stick here,” he laughed humorlessly.
“Ahhh~” I cooed and smiled, “You’re only saying that cause you know you guys’ are going to be missing me so much!”
“Miss you?” He scoffed, “Yeah right. What we’re going to be missing is your baking. It’ll be the greatest blow our family has faced since 1824.”
I gave a scathing look, “And what, if I may ask, happened in 1824?”
“Don’t know, but something bad probably.”

I have never been so sore getting off of a bus in her life. The cheapest route to get to Westminster from Hawkshead was a train and 8 bus stops, totaling up to 10 or so hours in and out of vehicles. I groaned and stretched when my feet planted on hard asphalt for the first time in what seemed like forever. But, for all the soreness, I had made it to my destination with time to spare.
It was louder than I had imagined, crowded with traffic from all directions and people running any which way to get on with their lives. It was bustling and busy. Lively. Not exactly what I was used to which made me smile.
Wide.
I made it.
I only had a suitcase with me, the rest of her belongings would be delivered in a few days to the new apartment.
My apartment.
I was positively giddy at the thought.
It took a lot of self control to keep from skipping down the side walks while I somehow navigated the new scenery, but I managed to keep my excitement under wraps for the time being. Arriving an hour early gave me a bit of time to take in the bigger sites near by, like the Ferris wheel, the clock tower Big Ben, and my personal favorite- Westminster Palace and abbey. It was a dream of mine since I was little to see it in person, and now here I was standing mere blocks away from the grand building, elated and amazed.
Vibrating caught my attention and I barely managed to turn my eyes away from the sites in front of me to my phone, Kyra’s name popping up on the screen. My best friend and now room mate, Kyra Bardou, who was probably wondering where the hell I was now.
“Hey,” I drawled with an obvious grin I couldn’t even hide in my voice.
“Hey yourself! I’ve been waiting at the stop for 15 minutes with no sign of you only to learn you’re already in town and didn’t even bother to tell me!” She spoke so quickly I was shocked she didn’t run out of breath and laughed.
“I’m site seeing, sue me!” I turned and started making the slow walk back, “I’ll be back in a couple minutes, I promise.”
She only grunted in response and let me walk in a comfortable silence, letting me continue to take everything in while simply enjoying her presence on the line. It was the last few moments I’d get now, the last bits of my old life slipping through my fingers like sand in exchange for a new one.
And the chaos that comes with a big city.
Like robbers.
I couldn’t even let out a cry as I was shoved to the ground, my phone forced from my hand and my suitcase caught up in a strange mans arms. It took me a whole 5 seconds to get my bearings enough to yell at the man and give chase, shouting for help though no one so much as looked our way, just moved out of his.
“Stop!” I screamed, running but quickly losing him as he bobbed and weaved through the crowd skillfully. “Stop! Someone stop him!”
And this time, someone moved to action, running past me at an alarming rate and quickly gaining ground on my assailant before they both rounded a corner and I lost sight of them.
My heart dropped and I picked up speed again, hoping that I didn’t let them get far enough away for me to lose them completely, it would have been easy for them to get away from me here.
But when I turned around the block, I found the man on the ground with the track star of a man on top of him, already on the phone with I assume the police. I finally caught up to them and without thinking, hugged the man on the phone, a silent thank you while he spoke to whoever was on the line, before I gathered my things and hugging them close to me.
He smiled kindly, finishing the call and turning to me properly while still pinning the thief to the ground. “Are you alright miss?”
“Yes! Thank you so much, I’d have been completely lost without this,” I gestured to my luggage. “I can’t thank you enough for helping me get it back. I don’t even know how to get around town yet.”
He laughed and nodded. “So new to town then. It was my pleasure to help, though I was really just doing what anyone in my position would do,” he responded kindly.
Furiously I shook my head, “No, you didn’t. I don’t believe I saw a single soul other than you move to help. Unless you did but beat them to it at the last minute. Not that that it implausible, you are seriously fast on your feet.”
He laughed again and I noticed what a nice laugh he had, it was contagious and I couldn’t help but let out a chuckle of my own now that my adrenaline was fading bit by bit. “Yes, well- I do enjoy the sport.”
“Dually noted,” I grinned, jumping a little when my phone started to buzz in my hands. Kyra’s name popping up on the screen again. “Shoot!” I exclaimed and answered. I wasn’t even able to put the phone to my ear before I heard her shouting my name on the line. “Kyra-”
“Oh my god, Y/N! What the heck happened, I heard you shout and then the line went dead! Are you okay? Did something happen? Where are you?” She was speaking so loudly I had to hold the phone away from my ear a safe distance as she spouted one question after another at me without reprieve.
My rescuer across from me chuckled, overhearing my frantic friend. “I’m fine, someone tried to steal my stuff on my way to meet you. Luckily someone came along and helped me catch him, otherwise I’d have lost everything. But everything is okay now, we are-” I looked around and realized I have no idea where we were.
He seemed to catch on to my newest distress and whispered, “Tell them we are on the corner of Tufton and Bennett’s Yard.”
I nodded and mouthed a thank you, “ Tufton and Bennett’s Yard,” I repeated and she said she’d be here in a 10 minutes and to sit and wait before hanging up the phone.
I slouched on the wall of some building, letting myself relax. “Not to be repetitive or anything, but thank you.”
He just shook his head, “No need. You’re friend sounded pretty worried about you, it wouldn’t do well to let her stew in that worry longer than needed.”
“Yeah, it’s been a few years since we last saw each other. She’d be pretty upset if something bad happened before I could even move in,” I laughed, though it didn’t quite sound right even to my ears. “I’m Y/N, by the way,” I introduced and stuck my hand out.
He took it and gave a firm shake, “Tom. It’s a pleasure to meet you Y/N. Even in these less than optimal circumstances.”
“The pleasure is mine, I assure you.”
“Y/N!” Someone yelled, and we both turned our heads to see Kyra sprinting full speed around her car and at me. I stood and braced myself for the collision of her, and fell back against the wall with the force of her body.
“Holy shit, girl! You scared the hell outta me, you could have died! This is why I told you to call me when you first got into town, you always manage to get yourself into trouble like this. What would I have told your parents if something happened, huh? Huh!?”
I grinned and pulled back to get a proper look at her. Her black hair, normally frizzy was sticking out in every direction and her honeyed eyes wide as she scanned me over, running her hands over my arms for injuries. “I’m fine, Kyra. I’m sorry I didn’t call sooner, you’re right.”
“I know I’m right!” She shot back with a glare, “That doesn’t make me feel any better!”
“Well, there is a first for everything after all.”
Tom laughed hard at our back and forth, making us both jump a little and look down at him. Before I could even say anything, Kyra was down on his level with the thieves shirt in her fists and a scowl that would scare the devil himself on her face.
“Is this the bastard that did this?”
“Let go!” I shrieked and pulled her off, albeit with a little effort. “Tom called the cops and they’ll deal with this properly. Not you,” I said sternly. She just let out a huff of a response and pushed herself back enough to look at Tom properly.
She gave him a once over and held her scowl in place, “So you’re the one who saved Y/N/N?”
He gave a small, hesitant nod and gave me a nervous glance. I just laughed and stood back up, as Kyra launched forward to give him a hug. “Thank you,” she murmured a few times and pulled back.
“No worries,” he said, and looked far less distressed now that Kyra didn’t look like she wanted to gut him. “I was there at the right time is all.”
“Yes, well- That doesn’t mean what you did was anything less than amazing. My whole life is in that bag and in that phone at the moment. Seriously, if there is anything I can do for you in return it’s yours. Ice cream, some roller skates, a kidney. Just ask.”
Everyone laughed at that and he nodded with an obviously sarcastic “sure”, just as the police arrived to take the culprit and our statements. Kyra mumbled something about them being slow and went to the car for a few minutes to be out of the way.
15 minutes later, everything was settled and they took the man away. Leaving Tom and I alone on the side walk again while I settled everything in my case to be sure I didn’t miss anything and quickly scribbled on a stray notecard.
“I meant it when I said I owe you one,” I said and handed the card with my name and number to him. “Just give me a ring if I can ever be of any help at all and I’ll come running. Though, probably much slower than you did.”
He tried to decline the offer only once, but after some persistence he took it with another smile, “Thank you, Y/N. Hopefully this will not be our last meeting. And hopefully never again under such pressing circumstances,” he held out his hand, and I took it, returning his earlier shake with a firm one of my own and I agreed.
“Until next time then,” he said and left.
I barely was able to take my seat in the car before Kyra grasped my arm with a devious smile, “Y/N/N- Did you just give that guy your number?” My silence was answer enough and she laughed, “Girl! No way!”
No way was right, I thought with a small smile of my own as we pulled away and started home.

can you do a skz one where Chan is working hard for a comeback, doing a lot of writing, producing, ect. but then he gets a cold, (snz centered) but he refuses to take a break, so Felix has to force him to take a break. With lots of Chanlix fluff please. 🥺🥺 (p.s I LOVE your writing, you are quite talented, and just have a way with words. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ love you ❤️)
Thank you, this really means a lot to me considering that English isn’t my first language.
I alread wrote something similar. You can find it here.
It’s never this cold in Australia
 Fandom: Stray Kids
Sickie: Chan
Caregiver: Felix
 No one’s POV.:
Stray Kids would have another comeback soon, which left them with almost twice as much work as usual. Felix hated those times when they prepared for comebacks, not because he didn’t like to make new music, hell, he loved making new music, rather because Chan would always overdo it on himself and the younger could do nothing but watch the leader run himself into the ground. This time was no different and it had actually been a few days since any of the members had seen their leader apart from the dance practices they spent together. Not even Changbin and Jisung were allowed to stay in the studio with their hyung because after the songs were written and most lines were recorded, Chan had to edit them. Since the other two members of 3racha wouldn’t be able to help much with editing other than approving or disapproving, they were more of a distraction to the Aussie, so in hopes of not stressing him out more, they left him to work in peace. Maybe if there were no distractions, he’d finish faster and take the time to rest afterwards. However, assuming there were no distractions, was wishful thinking. There certainly still were distractions, the worst of them a headache that had started bothering Chan a few days ago. He wasn’t surprised at all, considering he slept even less than usual, spending day and night looking at his laptop screen. The Aussie was no stranger to headaches, often overworking himself. The only thing he was grateful for was that he hadn’t had a migraine yet like he always got them when he was too stressed and sleep-deprived.
As days passed, the headache wasn’t the only thing bothering him. After falling asleep in front of his laptop at the studio again, Chan woke up with a completely blocked nose. Unable to breathe through it in the slightest. The pain had shifted right between his brows, causing his eyes to water. The light coming from the screen in front of him didn’t help either and after saving all his open files, he closed the laptop. Feeling more exhausted than he had in a while, he dropped his head onto the desk and closed his eyes again. If he had the energy, he’d move to the couch at the back of the studio and allow himself a small nap. Not longer than an hour though because he couldn’t afford losing the time he needed to finish everything before their deadlines. He had slept just fine in his chair earlier but now it didn’t work anymore, leaving the Aussie to just sit with his eyes closed, head on his arms, as he started overthinking. Sure, the headache could be caused by exhaustion but now his nose was stuffed up and he felt so cold. If he could, he’d get up and adjust the air conditioning but getting up sounded way too tiring. Though Chan didn’t want to admit it to himself, he could tell he was coming down with something and the thought of getting sick stressed him out. What if he wouldn’t be able to meet the deadlines? No! He could! He had worked through illnesses quite a few times before, so why shouldn’t he manage to do that now?
He didn’t know how much time had passed but his phone started to buzz with a reminder that he had to be at the practice room within the next ten minutes. Groaning at the thought of having to move around and music blearing loudly, Chan forced himself up and tried to remind himself of the positive things. Maybe dancing would help warm him up and he wouldn’t feel so cold afterwards. Stumbling to the door of his studio, the Aussie braced himself against the door frame and drew in a shaky breath. His nose tingled, causing his eyes to water before he ducked into the crook of his elbow with a rough sounding sneeze. Chan cleared his throat, wincing at how raw it felt, and used his sleeve to dab away the irritated tears that had spilled from his eyes. Trying to pull himself together, he made his way to the practice room and occasionally rubbed his arms to generate warmth. His previously blocked nose had started to run and he sniffled lightly before pushing the door open and cringing at the bright ceiling lights. Most of his dongsaengs were already there, stretching or going over short sequences of the choreography that they didn’t feel confident in yet. “Hyung!”, Jisung yelled, jogging over and hugging the leader, “Guys, he’s alive! Hyung, I didn’t think we’d get to see you anymore.” Chan barely noticeably flinched at the rapper’s loud voice and hesitantly hugged back, grateful for some warmth.
After some more teasing about not having seen the oldest in ages, they moved on to practicing but it didn’t go too well for Chan. Just standing upright already made him feel lightheaded, so it wasn’t much of a surprise that the fast step sequences caused the oldest to stumble frequently. His head was thumping with the same beat blasting from the speakers as Chan braced himself on his knees panting. It was only now that he noticed how difficult it was to breathe through a nose that was stuffed up and somehow runny at the same time. The dancing also hadn’t done much to warm him up like he had hoped it would. Usually he’d dance in a t-shirt only but today, he wore a sweater over his t-shirt, not even taking it off after one hour of dancing when all of the members were drenched in sweat. To be fair, he was drenched in sweat too but at the same time, he still felt cold. Seeing how out of breath their oldest was, Minho announced they’d have a ten-minute break to drink something and catch their breaths. They all knew Chan didn’t like to be called out when he wasn’t doing as well as usual, so the others just went to drink something and chat with each other, while Felix made his way over to his fellow Aussie, lowly asking: “Hey, you alright there? You’re looking pretty tired.” – “I am, both. Just haven’t been sleeping much”, the older replied quietly, letting out a shaky breath as he sat down next to his bag. Uncapping his water bottle, he struggled it really drink something because he couldn’t breathe while there was water in his mouth.
Chan put his bottle back into his bag and closed his eyes, massaging the bridge of his nose, willing the headache away. “What are your plans for the rest of the day?”, Felix hummed, sitting down next to his friend. The leader shrugged, sniffling: “Jus’ goin’ back to the studio. There’s so much I still need to finish and I don’t nearly have the time to.” The younger hummed in acknowledgement, not pointing out how miserable the other sounded. Felix could tell Chan was sick, the fact that he never took off his sweater being a dead giveaway, the slight rasp and congestion present in his voice only a confirmation. There was something else the dancer knew, the older wouldn’t do anything different from when he was healthy, he’d still work as long and as hard. This was one of the things he hated the most, watching his friend suffer but not being able to help because Chan didn’t want help. Help in this case would mean standing between him and his work and the leader would never tolerate that. Right now, it almost looked like he was dozing of against the wall and Minho felt guilty as he had to call them back to practicing. Felix got up first, reaching out both hands to pull Chan up, smiling sympathetically: “You sure you’re up for more dancing?” – “Lix, come on. I’m fine, really. We nee- ne - we need hESH! *sniff* we need to get this perfect”, the leader replied with a watery smile, that Felix could tell was entirely fake.
He also could tell that Chan was really frustrated with himself. Most of the group already had the dance moves down, the only one still struggling was their leader. They knew the sole reason for his difficulty with the choreography was that he wasn’t feeling well, whether that meant he was sick like Felix claimed or just sleep-deprived from all the hours he had worked through the night. Since they had mastered the dance and knew Chan would master it too when he was feeling better, Minho and Hyunjin, who were in charge of their practice session, called it a day. They convinced Chan that it was only scheduled for two hours and that they had different schedules now. It wasn’t entirely true but they were certain the oldest would end up either hurting himself or fainting if he kept dancing. After their practice was officially over, the group dispersed and practiced the things they wanted to improve for their comeback, singing, rapping or secretly returning to the practice room after Chan went back to his studio. Felix had tried to convince him to come back to the dorm, to take a warm shower and eat a proper meal but the older was stubborn, almost getting mad at the boy who only tried to help him. It wasn’t like the leader didn’t want to take a warm shower to get rid of the sweat and the chill that had settled bone-achingly deep but he was already stressed enough as it was and he knew it would only get more stressful if he wasted time that could better be spent working.
At this point, Felix knew he wouldn’t achieve anything by pestering the older. He’d only make him angry and cause him to hole himself up inside the studio even more, so he relented and watched with a heavy heart as the leader shuffled back to the studio. From around the corner, he heard two painful sounding sneezes and sadly shook his head, walking off into the opposite direction. If he couldn’t get Chan to come home with him, he’d at least get him a fresh t-shirt and hoodie because if the older wasn’t already sick, he’d certainly be after sitting in a room with air conditioning, wearing his sweat-through practice clothes. Unsure about the last time the leader had a decent meal, Felix also took the time to make some soup, pouring it into a thermos and packing a bowl and spoon, so his hyung could eat it at the studio. He grabbed a big sports bag and filled it with fresh clothes, the soup and a thick scarf the older had bought him during the first winter Felix experienced in Korea. Shortly before leaving the dorm again, he remembered to also shove a travel pack of tissues into the bag. If only Chan would take better care of himself.
The leader sat in front of his laptop, suppressing the urge to cry as the screen blurred in front of him. By now, one of his sleeves was constantly pressed against his nose, either to rub at it as he sniffled quietly or to keep him from sneezing all over his keyboard. He couldn’t tell when exactly his nose had gotten so sensitive but it only took as much as one slightly too forceful breath to make it start tickling again, which in turn would make his eyes water more and cause him to see even less of the screen in front of him, yet Chan refused to admit that his attempts of getting something done were unsuccessful. The leader pulled both of his sleeves over his palms to rub at his itchy face, sighing in frustration. His breath started to hitch again and giving into the feeling this time, he simply kept his sleeves over his face, waiting. "h-hESSH! hISH’iew!” He sniffled carefully before he dared to remove his hands, instead swiping his sleeves under his eyes to dry them. When did he start feeling this bad? Sure, he had started to feel this cold coming on earlier, yet he never thought it would cause him more than some congestion. Blinking at his screen, his eyes instantly started to water again, still, he tried to work through it, determined he wouldn’t let a cold keep him from meeting his deadlines.
Chan had taken off his shoes after some time, pulling his legs closer to his body as he curled up in his chair, trying to stay warm. He had already adjusted the air conditioning when he came back to the studio but it didn’t help much. By the time Felix arrived to the studio, it seemed like the leader was staring through his laptop screen rather than at it. He also didn’t notice the younger’s arrival, startling when Felix appeared next to him. The dancer heard him mumble something incoherent, not understanding a word but frowning at how out of it the older was. “Sorry, what was that?”, he hummed, resting a hand on Chan’s shoulder. The leader cleared his throat before repeating: “I said, ‘s never this cold in Australia.” The younger was stunned, to him it felt pretty toasty in the small studio after the air conditioning had been completely turned off. Worriedly he pressed his palm against his hyung’s forehead, causing the older to shudder. He clicked his tongue, stating: “Well, I can tell you why you feel cold. You’re feverish, which I’m pretty sure you knew already.” – “I-I hhh… hh’HDJsHhiew!” – “Mhm, exactly my point. You’re sick and should come home to rest”, Felix emphasized. That seemed to wake Chan. The drowsy fog in his head disappeared as his eyes finally focused on his dongsaeng, arguing: “I can’t. There’s still so much to do, I’m not going to finish this on time. God, I’m already so behind with everything. The comeback is too soon. If I don’t at least finish another three songs tonight, it’ll be a disaster.”
Sighing, Felix turned his chair away from his laptop, so it was facing him instead. “Hyung, it won’t. I know it’s already great as it is and Stay will agree with me. There’s still enough time till the comeback and Binnie-hyung and Sungie can help you. Besides, I don’t think you’re going to get much done with a fever like this”, he tried to reason. Face hardening, Chan got out of his chair, voice raised: “How would you know if the time is enough? You have no idea how many more songs I still have to edit. Those people won’t be Stay anymore if I can’t give him the music they are expecting from us. I could get stuff done tonight if you weren’t distracting me from it!” Voice cracking and giving out towards the end, the leader dropped back into his chair. Tears spilled down his cheeks as he mumbled apologies over and over again. He had never meant to snap at the younger like this and he’d also never raised his voice at Felix like this. Biting his lip, Felix pulled himself out of his dazed stupor. Chan’s outburst had been unexpected but he was sure the older didn’t mean it, so he forced down his shaken-up emotions and embraced the other, who quietly hiccupped, wiping at his eyes.
“Ssh, you’re okay. It’s okay, hyung. Everything’s just a bit too much right now, hm?”, he whispered, running his hand through the other’s disheveled curls. Chan nodded with a wet sniffle, trying to fight back the tears that just continued coming. His bottled-up stress and frustration now bubbling over. Pulling him to his feet, Felix guided the older over to the couch and sat down with him after quickly retrieving the bag he had brought. He pulled out the tissues and handed them to Chan, who messily wiped his cheeks before blowing his nose, irritating it again. “hISH’iew!” – “Bless you”, the dancer hummed, handing him another tissue as the first was already soggy. He kept rubbing his friend’s back, hugging him from time to time as he waited for the older to cry his emotions off of his chest. It took almost twenty minutes for Chan to calm himself down again. He didn’t even know why he was so upset, mainly feeling emotional and sensitive from his fever. Seeing he was still shivering slightly, Felix pulled out the scarf he had brought with him and laid it across the leader’s shoulders before rubbing his arms up and down. The older closed his eyes and leaned against the back of the couch, clearing his throat repeatedly. “Does your throat hurt too?”, the younger asked quietly. Chan shook his head, rasping: “’s jus’ dry from breathing through my mouth.” – “Oh, have some water then”, Felix instructed, handing him the bottle from his desk. He didn’t fully believe his hyung, so he was going to find out the truth differently. Of course, Chan’s wince didn’t go unnoticed as it was obvious swallowing hurt him.
Rolling his eyes at the leader’s stubbornness, Felix handed him the fresh clothes. It took some prodding because Chan was feeling way too cold to take off the shirt he was wearing but he felt much more comfortable in his clean hoodie afterwards. The younger was now wrapping the scarf around his neck to protect his already strained voice from further harm, while Chan was already dozing off in his sitting position. Gently nudging his arm, Felix reminded: “Come on, we still need to go home before you sleep. Did you eat already?” The leader shook his head. “You can either eat a late dinner back at the dorm or I brought you some soup. You could eat here and then go straight to bed when we get back”, he offered. This time Chan nodded. Furrowing his brows, the younger asked: “Yes to which option?” – “Straight to bed”, Chan muttered, barely staying awake. Felix quickly took out the soup he had prepared, glad when he found it still steaming, and agreed: “You can you straight to bed but please eat this first. You can’t run on protein shakes, granola bars and coffee the entire time.” – “That works pretty well”, the older argued, blowing onto the spoon. The dancer rolled his eyes, muttering: “Well, that’s debatable.” They sat in silence, apart from Chan’s soft sniffles, as the leader ate the first warm meal he had had in a week. He didn’t want to admit it but the soup felt nice, warming his sore throat and his entire body from the inside. Plus, His dongsaeng certainly wasn’t a bad cook, at least not as far as he could taste with his nose blocked.
Felix packed up the things he had brought, while Chan saved his files and slid his laptop into his backpack, ready to let the younger take him home. Although the thought of leaving the building into the night didn’t seem too appealing, the leader reminded himself of the warm bed waiting for him at the dorm. A bit lightheaded still, he relied fully on Felix’ arm around his waist, guiding him home as his eyes fought to stay open. He got even more unsteady as his breath hitched and he gripped onto the younger’s shoulder for support. The dancer slowed down even more, steadying his hyung as he brought up his arm sneezing into the crook of his arm twice, almost toppling over. “Bless you. We’re almost there”, Felix promised, dragging a sniffly Chan down another block towards their dorm building. The leader looked dead on his feet as the light in the entrance hall of the building illuminated his face. The younger wince as he grasped just how much the older’s condition had declined since their practice in the afternoon. Quietly whimpering, Chan pulled his hood further over his face to block out the uncomfortably bright light that made his eyes burn and head pound. After what seemed like a whole journey, they made it up to their dorm, kicking off their shoes. As promised, Felix walked the leader straight to his room where all the older did was changing into thicker sweatpants before curling up under his blanket. Felix left the room for a few minutes and returned with some water and medicine, whispering: “Since you ate something earlier, you can take something for your fever and headache now. I’ll leave the water on your nightstand in case you get thirsty or your throat bothers you during the night.” With a grateful but hoarse hum, Chan took the medicine before curling up again and burying his face in his blanket. "hESH! *sniff*” – “Bless you. Do you want cuddles?”, the younger offered. Shaking his head, the older replied pitifully: “Don’t want to get you sick too.” – “I didn’t ask you if you wanted to get me sick, I asked if you wanted cuddles”, Felix chuckled. Letting out a shaky laugh, Chan admitted: “I-I guess I do.” – “Alright, scoot over. Don’t worry if you still feel cold, you’ll get your very personal Australian sun.”

RFA + saeran’s petnames headcannons
GENDER NEUTRAL
something small to start the blog off hehe~ here are the RFA’s and saeran’s (minus v because i literally haven’t played his route or looked at him HJGHGJ sorry-) favourite pet names to call you: (minor spoilers for saeran)
yoosung:
not gonna lie, poor baby yoosung is probably the one *being* called the pet names most of the time; but after a while he does start to get more comfortable and less anxious and flusterable (is that word? LMAO) when giving affection to the MC. he starts off very slowly, calling you the pet names when you’re both sleepy, or when you’re focused on a game with him, so you don’t notice it too much (though his face still reddens in anticipation to your reaction) and then pet names become a more natural thing for him, and just start slipping out- especially if you give him a positive reaction because he just wants to see you happy!
pet names include: - honey (delivered with a cheesy grin, he thinks he’s all smooth and classy) - bubby (literally just baby but with extra yoosung sweetness added - it started out as something he used in his sleepy voice and then you picked up a liking to it- it still kind of embarrasses him)  - birdie (likes the concept of you being all small and fluffy- *is small and fluffy*- yoosung’s version of the classic pet name ‘dove’) - snuggles (definitely WAS NOT the name of his old teddy bear that he MAYBE still keeps as a SECRET to cuddle when he misses you-) - his little pogchamp
zen:
pet name GOD - shamelessly started using pet names as SOON as you two hit it off, this man is a pet name machine he has TRICKS UP HIS SLEEVE. bro. he uses as many pet names as he can to figure out your weak spots and then TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THIS KNOWLEDGE. it boosts his ego to see you flustered because of him of course - though he wants you to feel special too! he has a few favourites listed here with special meaning~
pet name include: - babe/jagi/jagiya (duh bro?? its like canon or sum) - beautiful/handsome/gorgeous - whatever suits you most~ (NEED I SAY MORE? SOMEONE AS BEAUTIFUL AS HIM WILL ONLY BE WITH SOMEONE EQUALLY AS GOOD-LOOKING?? he also give constant compliments be warned) - cutie (wholesome zen moment) - good-lookin’ (said as he casually pulls you in by the waist to kiss your forehead, wow zen you’re so smoo0th) -  sexy (IT’S THE BEAST BRO)
jaehee:
unfortunately none of us have really seen jaehee’s more lovey-dovey side in the game - she probably prefers calling you by your name the most, and she speaks it almost like it’s a praise, but the odd time she calls you pet names just as a way to appreciate you, or to remind you that she cherishes you. does it very casually and naturally, she’s quite a steady-paced girl so she needn’t force pet names to come, they just do whenever the moment calls for it really.
pet names incluude: - love  - darling (you are dear to herr!! she’s so busy all the time - moments with you are cherished and precious - you’re like a pocket of hope and sunshine in such a grey world full of deadlines and schedules... someone she can truly relax with!) - beloved - dear(est) - sweetheart (BCS. YOU. ARE. SO SWEET! you’re always looking out for her and being so patient with her as she works - you have a heart of gold, and she admires how kind you are to the RFA members - she’s truly lucky to have won a place in your heart <3)
jumin:
this man. this man is so nonchalantly smooth. he doesn’t even know it - or maybe he does - you can’t tell because he’ll just slip in a pet name mid-convo and make you mELT. when he gets soft... pet names are maybe one of his favourite things to tell you, because he gets to show you his more vulnerable and affectionate sides. he uses pet names as a way to spoil you - and spoil you he does because HIS VOICE *IS HEAVEN*, and the light kisses and touches he places on you as he speaks to you so fondly are a BIIG BONUSS. it takes him a while to start using more ‘personalized’ pet names - he sticks to the generic ones at first, they’re classy and simple - but after a while he conjures up newer ones out of his sheer emotion for you - only to be used in private though.
pet names include:  - the usual at first, dear, beloved, honey, love - AND THEN BOOM: precious (you are the most precious thing in his life HANDS DOWN. gets so sentimental when he uses it aswell - will whisper it to you before bed or when he’s trying to comfort you - nothing in this world compares to how much you mean to him) - kitten (yeah you thought i would stop myself - no.) - mr/mrs/mx* han (after you get married he does this a lot in public - maybe to show off a little bit and see everyone’s surprised faces as he follows it with ‘dear’ or something - he isn’t big into PDA but he has his smug sneaky ways of letting you know that he is thankful to have you) - HIS prince/princess/your majesty/highness: (DUUUDE... he wants the BEST for you - you’ve finally shown him what the wonderful feelings of love do! you hold that power over him at least! ...will kiss your hand when he uses this)
saeyoung:
saeyoung has... stranger more unique ways to show you affection, and the pet names he uses do not escape his whacky tendencies - uses pet names as a way to put a smile on your face and to make you laugh, to see that cute bright smile on your face! of course though, saeyoung has a (small) share of pet names that are more sensical and have some sort of more obvious meaning behind them. he starts off using dumb pet names, then as he gets emotionally attached stops, then he accepts he loves you and starts using really cheesey pet names, theenn he regains some of his happiness with you and becomes more jokey again (WHEW!).
pet names include: (besides the normal boooring ones /j) - his star (you guided him to his happiness... you shone for him brightly when he had no shine himself - you cheered him up with your beauty and warmth - and you guys did kick ass stuff in his good end like it was a MOVIE or something – also spaaace??) - weird food names - starts off as honey and sweetie pie - gets weird fast... will call you his chip and his nurse pepper ( doctor is reserved for the drink - otherwise it gets confusing) - LOWKEY MAKES FUN OF YOU... if you’re short he’ll call you shortie - if you’re tall he calls you tallie (haha funny.) if you’re blonde he calls you blondie, and if you have freckles or dimples OR GLASSES - consider it your new name. also starts calling you after the things you wear - if you wear chains, he calls you chains, if you wear dramatic makeup, he starts calling you a diva - will call you noob i’m sorry - sweet cheeks (SEVEN WHICH CHEEKS-) - boople snoot (yes.) - his galaxy (the seven alternative to my world)
saeran:
okay so - it’s assumed that saeran is actually a DID system but i’m writing for good end saeran because um - lets be honest the alters were not the most healthy and probably wouldn’t have been doing any pet name calling (ray being too insecure, black suit saeran and unknown... being black suit saeran and unknown? it would have been sarcastic and mean)
after all of the hardships you guys had gone through... saeran was TERRIFIED that you would leave because why on earth would you want to stick by with him i mean?? all he had known his whole life is literally mistreatment he thought you were too good to be true. but you stuck by and you gave him what he had needed for so long - you always made him feel safe and he finally belonged somewhere, felt like the world wasn’t ALWAYS out for him, he could breathe easier now. very reluctant at first - messing up with you especially gave him paralyzing fear. but then you showed him such loyalty, he looked at you and saw that yes you made mistakes, that you were human, and you reminded him that it was okay to be human too. so slowly he trusted that you would accept him being affectionate back - he wanted to appreciate you like you appreciated him - despite all of the flaws he saw in himself constantly. (WHOO I LOVE SAERAN SO MUCH OMG CAN YOU TELL??)
pet names include: - angel (do i need to explain this?? you’ve saved his life - his future, everything. he sees you with a halo around your head constantly, even at your darkest moments, because he’s been there before too!) - flower (at first glance may seem like a cute thing because ray liked gardening - which sure part of it is that - but moreover he talks about your beauty when he uses this pet name, about how happy you make him, he sees you as someone delicate and gentle yet at the same time someone bold and bright - someone that the world NEEDS) - sunshine (you brighten his day, his month, his year, his life - aaand well a garden does need sunshine doesn’t it? you keep him going when he feels like giving up) - love and dear (too classic not to be included with a man that wore fancy suits JHGH)  - sweetheart/sweetie/honey (along with his big sweet tooth - he thinks you’re the sweetest person he’s ever met) - sugarplum (pls let me have this)
*mx is like m(r)s and mr but for non-binary folks :)

How an EP “Plans”
I thought I’d write something up to illustrate what it’s like being an EFP, since some of you aren’t aware of how the functional dynamics / overall behavior aspect of an individual type works. This is highly ENFP but also characteristic of an extroverted perceiving dominant.
Tumblr media
I host “high teas” in my home at least four times a year for my intimate friends. Thing is, while I love hosting teas… there’s also a certain amount of anxiety involved in having a ‘settled plan.’ The notion of planning things extensively in advance causes me stress, because there are so many decisions to be made. There are choices between types of mini sandwiches, on what kind of quiche to serve, which scones will best suit the rest of the options, on finalizing the desert options (and making sure not everything is the same color or all has dairy in it). Those things are fun, but also something you have to plan to ‘test run’ in advance, which means scheduling them in ahead of time with enough room to spare so if you hate one option, you can try another.
Whenever I am in the process of doing this, my lower Te feels “pressed for time.” I get it done in advance, but feel anxiety about an encroaching deadline looming ahead of me with “so many things to do to get ready!” I make a loose menu and look for options at the store a couple of days before the event. If I see something that would work better, I buy it. I wait until the last minute to do housework, to prepare the food, and to decide how to set the table, because… it just… works at the last minute. I’m a perceiving dominant. Adaptability, changing my mind, and ‘flying by the seat of my pants’ is how I roll. But the idea of setting a firm commitment, a date, and having it loom toward me gives me angst. And yet, it makes all my SJ guests feel safe, and gives them something to look forward to. I provide the necessities as my inferior Si dictates – pretty table, pretty food and plenty of it.
When I went to a Regency tea hosted by an ISFJ, she had planned it all down to the smallest detail with a spreadsheet where she crossed things off. She had chosen appropriate music and flowers for the occasion. She had specific ideas about how it should look, taste, feel, and be. And she was pretty chill about it, except at the last minute, because that’s when things can go wrong and J types can get more anxious, whereas an EP just goes “eh, it’s fine, we can use this other tablecloth. I didn’t want to iron the white one anyway. :P”
Tumblr media
I’ve seen this extend into how I handle my days, as well. I like to have a loose plan that I came up with myself (“I want to get these things done”) and then wing it as I prefer, prioritizing the “most important thing” (which is often my writing / editing). I can be flexible and adapt to unexpected circumstances, but I do like to feel some measure of control over my schedule. And it needs to be loose. I will  power through things at an incredible speed to get them done and crossed off my list. My ISTJ mother forced me to make a commitment yesterday in painting two walls in my room that I had been procrastinating about for months, because she wanted to help and only had a few hours to spare. So I had to make a commitment if I wanted assistance. Most people would dither around and take the weekend to paint a room. I got it done in 8 hours, all my furniture put back, and went to sleep in a normal, put-together space that kept me and my cats happy (my sinuses, not so much). I just decide on a whim to do something and power through it in little time. It’s a tert-Te super-power, like the time I decided at the last minute to make a friend a friendship album and got it done in 2 days.
I can frustrate other people, because I’m noncommittal, especially if it involves a long-term engagement. Always in the back of my mind is, “What if I get bored doing this for months on end?” If I join a Bible Study or a book club, I want to know when it’s going to end (6 weeks?) so I know where the escape hatch is. I can be “meh” if someone asks me to do something at the last minute, because I haven’t had time to mentally prepare for it, but I’m quite flexible in adapting when things go wrong. I just shrug and adjust my approach, the same as I would if I wrote myself into a corner in a novel and had to change everything two chapters back to make it work. I decided last week that chapter ten in my book was “dull.” I had one character with nothing to do, and not much of a preclimax, so I rewrote it. The character now accompanies another character on an ‘adventure’ that ties into the plot, but it rendered all that characters’ scenes in the next two chapters obsolete. It doesn’t bother me, though, because I can easily rewrite those two chapters to accommodate his absence, without hurting the overall structure of the story – it will be better as a result.
This is the strength of high Ne. Making it up as you go along, with confidence it will work, because it always does. It may not turn out how I planned it in the first place, but that’s fine because the plan was never fixed. I get things done in short energy bursts, but working on something too long bores me. Deadlines serve as catalysts for the final energy push needed to get me to finish something.
Being who I am also makes work easier. I have a job where it’s mostly doing just a few things here and there for days on end, and then a big ‘push’ right before an editorial deadline to get everything done. I do in 2 days what used to take an ISJ a week, because I work fast, I can rearrange an entire magazine as needed at the last minute, and work well right up against the deadline.
Hope that sheds a little insight into what it’s like to be an EP type.

Kai and 07: Flu Season
I return. The semester is over, my schedule is clear and I’m ready to fucking WRITE baby. This the next piece in Kai and 07′s story. I hope you all enjoy it.
CW: Hospitals, drugging in a medical context, dehumanization, slavery, institutionalized slavery, vomiting. (If I’ve missed anything let me know)
07 knelt on the bathroom floor, hands gripping the rim on the toilet bowl and sweat pouring down their face. They had spent the past few minutes vomiting out the contents of their stomach, bile burning their throat and mouth. They breathed heavily, eyes locked on the closed bathroom door. They had tried to keep quiet, but there was only so much they could do and a possibility that they may have woken master made them want to be sick again.
A minute passed and there was no sound of footsteps, no slamming open of the bathroom door and grabbing of hair as master dragged them into the living room to punish them for daring to make enough noise to wake him. Daring to be sick enough to be an annoyance.
They let out a sigh of relief, this was the second night in a row they had managed to not wake master, and they hoped that they wouldn’t need to press their luck for a third. Luck had never been on their side before.
With a low groan they dragged themselves off of the bathroom. Their legs felt like jelly and their head swam as they limped back to their room. A shiver ran down their spine and they hugged their stomach, wanting to rush back towards the warmth of their blankets while also wanting to avoid moving too fast and making any noise.
07 reached their room, walking in and closing the door softly behind them. They flopped onto the floor of the closet, their little safe haven, and wrapped the blankets around themselves. A quick glance at a digital clock that master had installed showed that it was close to 3 am. They groaned softly, another bad night of sleep. Maybe they could push their luck and change the alarm from 6 to 7. Master usually did not wake up until a few hours after them.
They reached for the clock, fingers hovering over the alarm setting button before pulling their hand back. It wasn’t worth the risk. Master had given them many gifts lately, if they were caught being lazy the consequences would be withering. They could tough it out, they had been through worse.
Another shiver hit them and they pulled the blankets tighter around themselves. All of their body hurt, and their stomach was churning again. They hadn’t felt this bad in a long time. But they would be ok, when they woke up they would be ok. They desperately, fervently hoped that they would be ok.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The alarm on the digital clock beeped noisily as 07 was ripped from their sleep. They were not ok. They were as far from ok as one could be while still being alive. Their head was pounding, their throat was dry and scratchy, and the mere thought of moving made their limbs ache.
The possibility that they were dying came across their mind. It didn’t seem unlikely at this point. A part of them were scared by the prospect, another felt like dying and letting this be over with wouldn’t be so bad. Another, smaller, almost utterly silent part wondered if maybe they could beg Master to take a day to recover.
No, no, no never no. Master may have been understanding and kind, but his generosity wasn’t limitless, it couldn't be. Asking for anything after being given so much would be nothing short of an insult. They couldn’t afford to do that, they wouldn’t be able to take a punishment. They just wouldn’t.
The alarm sounded again, the loud noise making 07’s head pound. They limply turned the clock off. A warm silence fell and 07’s eyes grew heavy. It would be so nice, so easy to just fall back asleep.
NO! They forced their eyes open and dragged themselves upright, legs shaking and vision swimming as they did. They...they had to get up. Had to work. Had to stay on Master’s good side. They could do this, they could do this.
Their steps towards the door were slow and shaky, each one feeling harder than the last. They pushed the door open slowly, stumbling forward slightly into the hallway. A draft blew through the house, sending another wave of shivers down 07’s spine. They warped their arms tightly around their body and made their way into the kitchen.
The kitchen sink still had dishes in it, remnants from last night. 07 looked at them hopelessly. They had left them there because they had wanted to go to bed a bit early, telling themselves they would clean them when they felt better the next day. Now the small stack of plates and cutlery looked like a mountain to climb.
07 stood in the kitchen, trying to psych themselves up. It wouldn’t be too much work. Breakfast could be quick, some toast and eggs. Master Kai had been busy the past few days, a big order for an important client as he had put it. A smaller breakfast wouldn’t be something he would mind. Then they could do all the dishes in one batch. That was manageable. Alright, time to g-
The sound of the refrigerator opening snapped 07 out of their thoughts. Their eyes went wide as they saw Master Kai rummaging through the contents of the fridge. They quickly looked to the wall clock. 8:15?! Had they really just stood there like a useless piece of shit for more than an hour? Their gaze snapped back to Master, who was pulling out an old box of Chinese take-out.
He glanced at them over his shoulder. “Morning, 07.” The greeting was quick, and Master was already leaving after grabbing a fork from the drawer. “Lotta work to do, I’ll be at the forge if you need me”.
07 watched gormlessly as Master turned the corner and disappeared. Their brain took a few seconds to process what was happening. They blinked once, then twice, and then felt their knees buckle as a wave of panic hit them.
They had just STOOD there! And did NOTHING! In front of their MASTER! They didn’t have breakfast ready and there were dishes in the sink and they had just stood around while their master was right there they didn’t even bow or respond to him an-
A fit of coughing knocked them out of their spiraling. The rough sound echoed through the empty house and 07 suddenly felt very cold and very alone. They took a moment to recover and pull themselves together. Well, Master was out at the forge and breakfast seemed to be...taken care of? That meant they could clean the dishes at least. And when they were done with that they could maybe take it slow, there wasn’t much to do and what housework was left was pretty light.
07 took a deep breath and walked to the sink. Their arms ached and their vision was spotty, but they had done harder work under worse conditions. All they had to do was wash the dishes and maybe vacuum or clean the windows. Nothing they couldn’t handle. They could do this, they would be fine.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kai brought his hammer down onto the hot blade in front of him, sending up a spray of sparks and finally molding it into the shape he wanted. He grabbed the blade with a pair of tongs and dunked into a nearby bucket of water, waving away the cloud of smoke that emanated from the cooling metal.
Last one for the day, not bad progress he mused as he set about shutting the forge off and putting his tools back into place. It would be close but he’d probably finish up by the deadline. Hopefully he would at least. Even if he didn’t he was on good terms with the client, he could probably get away with a slight delay.
It was getting dark. Winter days were short and forging in the cold of night wasn’t something Kai was interested in. He checked his watch...6:30 pm. It was a bit early for dinner, but he had skipped lunch. Oh well, 07 probably wouldn’t mind cooking a bit earlier than usual.
Even if they did mind they probably wouldn’t say anything. The thought bothered Kai. He was still getting used to the whole...having a slave thing. All that power over someone else, it made him feel...weird. He didn’t like it. He was an idiot who shouldn’t be given responsibility over a cactus, much less a whole entire person. Still, it seemed like 07 was doing alright so maybe he wasn’t doing too badly.
Cold air rushed in after him as he entered his house. A loud noise was coming from the living room, sounded like 07 was vacuuming. Kai shot a quick glance towards the floor. Hm, it seemed like 07 vacuumed the whole house. Much as he still felt weird about having them around, Kai couldn’t deny they were a godsend. His place hadn’t been this well kept since, well since he moved in fifteen years ago.
He should find a way to thank them for all their work. Maybe a gift of some sort? Some trinket to put in their room to add a bit of decoration. He didn’t know what their aesthetic tastes were though. They liked animals...maybe something zoo themed?
Maybe they wouldn’t mind hanging a sword on their wall. Everyone likes swords right?
Kai mused to himself as took off his jacket, hanging it over his arm and making his way into the living room. Sure enough 07 was busy vacuuming the floor, their movements slow and deliberate and their focus squarely on the task at hand. Kai stood back and watched them for a bit. They looked so intense, they always did. Like every small chore was the most important thing they would ever do in their life. It was endearing, at least it would be if Kai didn’t have…less than pleasant theories regarding where that attitude came from.
As Kai watched them he noticed something was off. At a closer glance their movements were less deliberate and more…sluggish. They were hunched over, their legs were shaky, and their face was scrunched up like they were in pain.
“Hey 07, you alright?” Kai asked, walking towards them. They didn’t respond, their gaze still on the vacuum like they were in a trance. “Hey! 07!”
07’s eyes shot open and they turned abruptly towards Kai. Their sudden movement caused them to drop the vacuum handle, and it hit the ground with a dull thud. They turned to look at the vacuum, then back to Kai, then back to the vacuum before their eyes rolled into their head and they crumpled to the floor.
“SHIT!” Kai rushed to them, kneeling down next to their body and placing a hand on their forehead. Jesus fucking shit they were burning up. His mind raced, what should he do. Fuck, what should he do. Maybe...fuck it, he wasn’t taking any chances. He wrapped them in his jacket and picked them up. They were light...really fucking light. Whatever, more pressing matters at hand.
He dashed to the front door, grabbing his keys off the hook on the wall. The driveway was clear, thankfully. He gently placed 07 down in the backseat of the car, strapping them down with the seat belts so they wouldn’t roll onto the floor. Kai jammed the key into the ignition, swearing heavily as the engine stalled due to the cold. Once the vehicle started up Kai all but barreled out of the driveway and began making a beeline for the local hospital.
The roads were empty and Kai drove as fast as wasn’t suicidal. Couldn’t get 07 the help they needed if he wrapped his car around a fucking tree right? Hahahahahahahaha.
Fuck.
Kai glanced at them in the rearview mirror. They were still unconscious, but it didn’t look like they had gotten any worse. Not to Kai at least. But then again what the fuck did he know? It was perfectly fucking possible that they were dying back there and he just couldn’t tell.
“Oh fucking...DAMN IT.”
He pressed harder on the gas, he could afford to go a bit faster. It was only a few more miles to the hospital anyways. The silence in the car was starting to feel suffocating, and Kai turned on the radio just to have some noise fill the air. The rest of the drive was uneventful, and Kai found himself pulling into the hospital parking lot sooner than he expected. Well, at least something was going well.
He unbuckled the still unconscious 07 and scooped them into his arms. The parking lot was almost empty, which meant the ER wouldn’t be too busy. Another lucky break. He entered the reception area, it was empty aside from the receptionist and one other person waiting. He walked up to the desk, clearing his throat to get the receptionists attention.
“Excuse me, I need help.”
The receptionist looked up from the file she was reading, startling slightly at the sight of 07 in Kai’s arms. “Oh, um, yes, how can I help.”
“They fell unconscious in my house. They have a fever. I think they’re sick.”
Brilliant observation genius.
The receptionist nodded. “Ok, one moment”. She made a call on the intercom and two nurses showed up with a stretcher. Kai gently put 07 onto it and they were taken away. He wanted to follow but was told to wait for a doctor to get him. He didn’t argue, best leave this to the professionals.
“Excuse me sir, if you wouldn;t mind there is some information I need to get down.”
Kai turned. “Oh, yes of course.” He sat at the chair in front of the reception desk.
The talk with the receptionist was a welcome distraction. It was all basic stuff, names, insurance, nothing that Kai couldn’t provide off the top of his head. He did get a strange look when he mentioned 07’s name, but the explanation of them being a slave seemed to clear that up.
Now all he could do was wait. He sat in the reception area, mindlessly looking through his emails and social media. The almost incomprehensible stream of advertisements, news, and shitty memes proved an effective distraction until he was approached by a doctor.
“Excuse me, Mr. Kai is it?”
Kai looked up, pocketing his phone and standing. “Yes, that's me.”
“Hello. My name is Doctor Graves. I have good news, your slave, 07 right?” Kai nodded. “Well all that's wrong is a case of the flu. It seems they passed out from exhaustion. They’re still unconscious but they’re stable. We have them on some medication and they should hopefully wake up soon.”
Kai let out a breath of relief. It was just the flou, they were fine. “Thanks doc. That's good to hear”.
The doctor nodded. “You know, generally speaking it's better to let slaves rest when they are sick instead of working them too hard. Even the common cold can be dangerous if left untreated.”
Kai raised his eyebrows, crossing his arms and frowning. “Hey! I didn’t do this to them”.
“I’m sure you didn't but…”
“Listen, I didn’t know they were sick. I’ve been busy and wasn’t paying too much attention. If I had known I would have told them to take it easy.”
The doctor didn’t seem convinced. “Be that as it may, I would recommend you pay more attention to them in the future. Negligence is the number one cause of death in slaves.”
Kai sighed, dropping his arms and slumping slightly. “Yeah doc, thanks for the advice. I’ll keep that in mind.”
The doctor nodded again. “I’ll have someone let you know when they wake up.”
Kai sat back down, placing his head in his hands. The doctor was right, he had really fucked up. How could he have just...not fucking notice? 07 had been suffering for what, three days? Forcing themselves to work while they were sick and he apparently didn’t care enough to even fucking notice.
God damn it. He knew he wasn’t cut out for this shit, he knew it. 07 would be better off with anyone else, someone fucking competent. Not his dumb ass. He let out another sigh, sliding his hands down his face and letting them rest in his lap.
Well, regardless of his lack of ability 07 would be with him for at least four more months. He was sure after all this shit they’d be counting down the days they could leave for someone even slightly qualified to care for another human being. He didn’t blame them. He wouldn't want to be stuck with him either.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
07 woke slowly, consciousness having to fight through a thick haze to reach them. The first thing they noticed was a strange beeping noise, followed by the stark whiteness of the walls. This...this wasn’t their room. Where were they, where was Master? What was going on?
Piece by piece their mind began to remember what had happened. They had finished the dishes and decided to...vacuum around the house. It took longer than they expected, the noise from the vacuum made their head pound and they had to take a few breaks to gather themselves. Then Master had come in from outside and then...then.
Panic hit them like a bullet, they had passed out in front of Master. Was he angry at them? Is that why they were alone in some strange room? What...what was going to happen to them. Their breathing grew rapid and shallow. The strange beeping noise began to grow faster and more erratic. What was that? Was it bad?
They heard voices and saw people that they didn’t recognize entered the room. 07 tried to shrink away, they didn’t want to be with these people. They...they wanted Master. The strangers got closer, crowding around them. They wanted to get away, but they couldn’t. They were trapped. They were…
They were on a bed.
A bed with walls that trapped them in and people were hovering over them, grabbing at their arms and chest. Panic gave way to desperation, and they began to struggle. They tried to flail, to get their arms away from the strangers’ grip. Despite their best efforts they couldn’t get away.
“N-no…” they began to beg. “Please...no. Please...don’t.”
The strangers wouldn’t let them go. They heard voices, words coming from their mouths but they couldn’t tell what they were. The fog of fear muddled everything around them.
“Please...please. Let me go. Please”.
They screwed their eyes shut, not wanting to see what the strangers might do. A sickening sense of familiarity hit them. It was going to happen again. It was going to happen again and they didn’t want it to happen again. They didn’t want to...to…
Their arms were let go and they felt a hand rest gently on their shoulder. They tensed, waiting for the grip to turn harsh or for it to start tearing at their shirt. Instead nothing happened. 07 opened their eyes slowly and turned to see...Master Kai?
Master Kai!
He gave a small smile. “Hey there 07, how are you holding up?”
They didn’t know what to say. Their mind was still hazy and the sudden shift from panic to relief had given them whiplash. But still, their master was talking to them and they needed to say something.
“I...I...good?”
They berated themselves internally. What a clumsy and stupid response. But Master Kai didn’t seem to mind. He never seemed to mind when they were stupid.
“That's good, that's good.” He let out a small chuckle. “You gave me quite a scare you know?”
“Excuse me Mr. Kai? I would like to speak to you about a few things before we discharge your slave.”
“Oh. Alright.”
The two men began to talk and 07 laid back, closing their eyes and drowning out what was being said. It was not the place of a slave to eavesdrop or insert themselves into their master’s business. Now that the panic had worn off they found themselves feeling rather tired. They still didn’t feel great, and getting to rest a bit longer would be nice. But they had to wait, they...needed Master’s permission first.
“Mmm...may...mmmm…”
Their attempt at a question limply railed off into soft mumbling. Before they could try again they felt Master squeeze their shoulder.
“Just rest 07. I’ll wake you up when we need to head home.”
07 was asleep before he finished his sentence.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kai pulled into the driveway with a relieved sigh. It was nice to be back home, Kai had never liked hospitals. He shut off his car and stepped out, walking to the backseat and pulling the still asleep 07 into his arms. He didn’t have the heart to wake them up when they had been discharged.
He entered his house and walked into the living room, only to be met by the lord wiring of the vacuum cleaner. Damn, that thing had been running for...shit 7 hours? Well there goes the electricity bill. The loud noise also had the unwelcome side effect of waking 07. They stirred in his arms, blinking blearily and looking around the room.
“Aw, piss.” Kai walked over to the vacuum, shifting 07 around slightly so he could turn the damn thing off. “Shut it will ya?”
“M...Master Kai?” Their voice was rough.
“Oh, hey 07.” Kai looked down to see 07 looking at him, seemingly still disoriented. “We’re back home, hold on, I'll get you to b-your room.”
07 simply nodded, closing their eyes again and starting to nod off. God they really were tired weren’t they. That or whatever the hospital had given them was hitting them hard. Either way they’d probably be out for another day. Maybe longer. Oh well, they had earned the rest.
Kai set 07 down in their closet...room...thing. This whole situation was still weird to him. He wanted to talk to them about maybe moving to an air mattress or futon at some point but that would have to come later. One thing at a time and all that.
He tucked 07 beneath the blankets, making sure they were wrapped up tightly. The blankets were thick, but it was still a cold night and that damn draft was still going on. Fuck! He needed to get that fixed. Ugh, tomorrow he was tracking down whatever hole in the wall was causing that draft and patching it with extreme prejudice.
He shook his head slightly and left the room, walking to a storage closet and pulling out an old space heater. He put the heater down in 07’s room, plugging it in and turning it to a warm but not sweltering temperature. There, now 07 should be comfortable.
Kai stood in the room and watched 07 for a few minutes, watching for anything that might be cause for concern. Aside from a few sniffles 07 stayed sound asleep and Kai decided he was just being paranoid now. It wasn’t anything serious, just a case of the flu. Bed rest and fluids, nothing more complicated. The doctor recommended they be given at least two days to recover, and he intended to make sure they took that time to rest.
Guilt hit him again. He shouldn’t have ever let it get this bad. He needed to be more attentive, be more aware. He needed to be better. For their sake. He wasn’t going to fail someone else again.
At least, no more than he already had.

HyunA Shares Thoughts On Working With PSY And DAWN On Upcoming Album, What Makes Her Happy, And More
HyunA recently participated in a pictorial and interview for the February issue of W Korea!
With her upcoming comeback just a few days away, HyunA expressed her regrets for not being able to drop her pre-release single “GOOD GIRL” in August of last year due to her struggle with vasovagal syncope. “I wanted to stand on stage, but my body wouldn’t let me. I almost went crazy,” she confessed.
HyunA also shared how supportive messages from her fans helped her take the blame off of herself. “Since vasovagal syncope is a condition where you can faint without any warning, it’s impossible to prevent. That’s also why I have a lot of wounds on my shoulders, the back of my head, or my face,” she explained. “While resting, I read the letters one by one. I resolved to show everyone that I could stand back up again even if it took me a while, so I think that’s why I was able to have a comeback right away like this.”
HyunA’s upcoming album features the title track “I’m Not Cool,” which was created with the help of PSY and HyunA’s boyfriend DAWN. On working on a track together with the “HyunA Team,” the singer shared, “It’s my first time composing a song in this way, since I’ve worked alone up until now. Looking back, it was like my homework. The guidelines were set for what had to be done by when so I would methodically work toward those deadlines, but this time we worked as a team in a relaxed and refreshing manner.”
Previously, HyunA released the song “FLOWER SHOWER” which PSY wrote the lyrics for and also co-composed. On working with PSY, HyunA revealed, “We get along really well. We also argue often but we make up really fast. While working on the upcoming album we communicated a lot. Sometimes we send messages like, ‘Alright player, it’s almost time to strike. How are you feeling?'”
HyunA talked about how she came to decide on a viper as the motif of the album. She shared, “The first time I heard the song, I thought that it sounded like a viper song. DAWN was listening to the song next to me, and he suggested the lyrics, ‘There’s no one more poisonous than me, I’m a viper.’ I liked those lyrics so much that I decided to go with the viper.”
Explaining about how the viper is alluring but also poisonous, HyunA said, “I think that kind of duality exists in me as well. Although I want to be nice, I also want to become a rebel on stage, and sometimes I want to act cute or sexy as well.”
HyunA revealed more about her orderly lifestyle as she explained, “I’m the type who can’t just coast through life. My yearly schedule is always filled, whether it be with lessons or other plans. I need to live in a systematic way in order to feel at ease. People always say that DAWN and I are two opposite people—one who is flexible and goes with the flow, and one who is the most methodical.”
Reflecting back on her first mini album “Bubble Pop!”, HyunA described how she felt at the time. “It was probably because of how much I enjoyed myself back then that I’ve kept wanting to stand on stage,” she revealed. “I was too young to even realize I was 20 at the time, and I just worked hard without knowing anything. When I watch those performances now, I look so healthy and full of energy.”
Although she’s known for her bold and daring concepts, HyunA credited it all to the support of the people around her. “When the people around me treat me well, give me choreography, and write songs for me, I work hard to not drop the ball and to live up to their expectations,” she said.
She continued, “There’s something my father often told me as a child. He said that I’m here because of others, and that others are here because of me. When I was little I didn’t understand what those words meant, but as time passed by those words soak into my skin in different ways. Whether it be 10 years ago or now, I think I try to work just a little harder on stage for the people who lift me up. It might be that the people around me are the ones who most want recognition.”
HyunA then opened up about the time when she first felt drawn to performing. “When I was in elementary school I didn’t have any talents and failed all my auditions, so my father suggested that I take up dancing,” she recalled. “While attending a dance academy I got the chance to perform on a small stage by the Dongdaemun Design Plaza. I realized when I stood on stage for the first time that there was a special feeling. The pleasant feeling of performing something I practiced, and the desire to do better the next time.”
When asked if people had any misunderstandings about her, HyunA responded that she takes everything in stride and accepts them naturally, adding that it wasn’t hard to rise above other people’s opinions of her. She reasoned, “I have plenty of good people around me. My fans are the best at this—whatever I do, they stand loyal by my side.”
HyunA also spoke fondly of DAWN as she said, “DAWN is someone who can’t be compared to anything else. He’s the driving force of my life and the one I love the most in this world. He’s also a friend I can hang out with and forget the passage of time because we just get along so well, as well as a rival in music who motivates me to do better.”
Emphasizing DAWN’s impact on her life, she added, “When I’m stuck in sadness he’s the one who pulls me out the fastest, and when I’m tired he doesn’t scold me and silently encourages me from behind. He’s someone I wouldn’t trade for the world, because I can’t even imagine a world without him.”
HyunA brought up the focus she places on her own health, especially while preparing for her comeback. “After dealing with my illness, I’ve started to check on my own health every day,” she said. “In the past I would be indifferent to myself and push through even when I wasn’t feeling well. These days I naturally ask myself how I’m feeling, or if I’m doing okay.”
Another question she asks herself is, “Are you happy?” HyunA said that she keeps asking herself when she feels happy so as to not forget the feeling. Listing the actions that bring her happiness, HyunA shared, “I like holding hands with DAWN and going on a short walk with him at the end of the day, I like spending the day at home with no incidents, and I like standing on stage.”
When asked if she has found happiness, HyunA answered, “I don’t know yet, but I think I know a bit about what makes me happy.”

Welllp These Are Books: the February 2021 Edition
Tumblr media
Most of my last month was spent on deadline and waiting for people to respond to my emails, which meant I did not have the time (or energy) to write much of anything, but had plenty of time to read, quite frankly, an absurd number of books. Some of which were very good, some of which were very cheesy, and some of which I have now told multiple people was quite possibly the worst book I have ever read. As always, though, what are my opinions if I am not sharing them with the internet? Ridiculous headlines, links, and those aforementioned opinions under the cut. As always, part two, feel free to send me any and all recommendations. It cannot possibly be worse than this one book. Seriously, you’ll understand in a second.
———
Quite Possibly the First Book I’ve Gone Out of My Way to Buy On Release Day Since Breaking Dawn, Which Says a lot About Me. As a Person.
A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas
Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can't seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.
The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre's Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta's orbit. But her temper isn't the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable, and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.
Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.
Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance-and healing-in each other's arms.
I’m not kidding when I tell you that I was counting the days until this came out. I was kind of indifferent to Nesta after the original ACOTAR books, but intrigued enough that I was like, I need to read this, and then I did read this and now I care quite a lot about Nesta. And how in love with Cassian she is. And vice versa. Because, let’s be honest, dude is in l o v e. There were some parts of the story I was not super into — namely, Ferye having to die in childbirth. Like, you’re telling me Cassian could have his guts hanging out at one point and we don’t know how to do a c-section? Nah, that ain’t it. Also, pregnancy as a storyline is not always my favorite thing, but more on that in a second. Also, also, here’s a bunch more words about ACOSF.
A “Huh, So That Happened” Sort of Ending. Which Was Disappointing.
A Vow So Bold and Deadly by Brigid Kemmerer
Emberfall is crumbling fast, torn between those who believe Rhen is the rightful prince and those who are eager to begin a new era under Grey, the true heir. Grey has agreed to wait two months before attacking Emberfall, and in that time, Rhen has turned away from everyone--even Harper, as she desperately tries to help him find a path to peace.
Fight the battle, save the kingdom. Meanwhile, Lia Mara struggles to rule Syhl Shallow with a gentler hand than her mother. But after enjoying decades of peace once magic was driven out of their lands, some of her subjects are angry Lia Mara has an enchanted prince and a magical scraver by her side. As Grey's deadline draws nearer, Lia Mara questions if she can be the queen her country needs.
As the two kingdoms come closer to conflict, loyalties are tested, love is threatened, and an old enemy resurfaces who could destroy them all, in this stunning conclusion to bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer's Cursebreaker series.
I loved the first book in this series. Absolutely adored it. So much so that I pretty quickly got the second one and read it. Enjoyed that on its own, but like I said in that one ask, I’m fairly certain A Curse So Dark and Lonely could have very easily been a standalone story. Should have been a standalone story? There was just SO MUCH going on here, and not nearly enough of it was resolved. Plot points just hung by the end of the trilogy, I was not ever entirely convinced Rhen and Harper were actually in love, let alone liked each other, and I thought Rhen got the very short end of an exceptionally cracked stick by the time the whole story wrapped up. Really, I think this  tried to do too much in not enough time and there should probably be another book. Also Lia Mara getting pregnant was dumb. There I said it.
Free Books On Amazon Unlimited That Were Better Than Expected, But Also Read Like Fic
The Bargainer Series by Laura Thalassa
Everyone knows that if you need a favor, you go to the Bargainer to make it happen. He’s a man who can get you anything you want … at a price. And everyone knows that sooner or later he always collects.
Callypso Lillis is a siren with a very big problem, one that stretches up her arm and far into her past. For the last seven years she’s been collecting a bracelet of black beads up her wrist, magical IOUs for favors she’s received. Only death or repayment will fulfill the obligations. Only then will the beads disappear.
But for one of his clients, he’s never asked for repayment. Not until now. When Callie finds the fae king of the night in her room, a grin on his lips and a twinkle in his eye, she knows things are about to change. At first it’s just a chaste kiss—a single bead’s worth—and a promise for more.
For the Bargainer, it’s more than just a matter of rekindling an old romance. Something is happening in the Otherworld. Fae warriors are going missing one by one. Only the women are returned, each in a glass casket, a child clutched to their breast. And then there are the whispers among the slaves, whispers of an evil that’s been awoken.
If the Bargainer has any hope to save his people, he’ll need the help of the siren he spurned long ago. Only, his foe has a taste for exotic creatures, and Callie just happens to be one.
No one is going to be able to convince me this wasn’t ACOTAR fan fic. I don’t care about timing or dates, or whatever. The similarities just...did not stop. In all three books, even. There were three books in this series, by the way. Most of which I really enjoyed. I read them all in like four days of email waiting, so they must have been doing something right. Des was a good love interest and I really liked the flashbacks in the first book. Also Callie didn’t super annoy me. That being said, whoever edited this book. Oof. Some of the prose was so goddamn cringe, I literally lol’ed. Right out loud. Every now and then it was like we had to be reminded that Des was a BAD GUY ™ but it felt very Edward “I’m a killer, Bella” Cullen, and Callie’s internal monologue was occasionally hysterical. Not in a good way. Also Temper was the worst. She was so annoying. Every time she talked, I was like, oh, her again. The first book was the best one.
HITTING ALL MY ROM COM BOXES! BASEBALL! ROMANCE! PINING! ONLY VAGUELY UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN THEY HAD SEX IN THE PORT JEFF DUGOUT BECAUSE I’VE BEEN IN THE PORT JEFF DUGOUT.
Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey
Georgette Castle’s family runs the best home renovation business in town, but she picked balloons instead of blueprints and they haven’t taken her seriously since. Frankly, she’s over it. Georgie loves planning children’s birthday parties and making people laugh, just not at her own expense. She’s determined to fix herself up into a Woman of the World... whatever that means.
Phase one: new framework for her business (a website from this decade, perhaps?)
Phase two: a gut-reno on her wardrobe (fyi, leggings are pants.)
Phase three: updates to her exterior (do people still wax?)
Phase four: put herself on the market (and stop crushing on Travis Ford!)
Travis Ford was major league baseball’s hottest rookie when an injury ended his career. Now he’s flipping houses to keep busy and trying to forget his glory days. But he can’t even cross the street without someone recapping his greatest hits. Or making a joke about his… bat. And then there's Georgie, his best friend’s sister, who is not a kid anymore. When she proposes a wild scheme—that they pretend to date, to shock her family and help him land a new job—he agrees. What’s the harm? It’s not like it’s real. But the girl Travis used to tease is now a funny, full-of-life woman and there’s nothing fake about how much he wants her...
Living her best life means facing the truth: Georgie hasn’t been on a date since, well, ever. Nobody’s asking the town clown out for a night of hot sex, that’s for sure. Maybe if people think she’s having a steamy love affair, they’ll acknowledge she’s not just the “little sister” who paints faces for a living. And who better to help demolish that image than the resident sports star and tabloid favorite.
Legit, I saw the description for this and I was like—did I write this? Kind of. (Shameless plug to read my own rom com, it also has baseball and pining) It didn’t matter, I loved it. Seriously, it hit all my rom com boxes: childhood friends, best friend’s sister, coming back home under duress, FAKE DATING and, let’s be honest, I am not immune to the use of “baby girl” as an endearment. Every time Travis called Georgie “baby girl” I was like, oh, ok, this is cool. It was cool! I only have two quips. One, that the fake dating didn’t last a little longer. The pacing of the story felt very quick, but that’s also this genre’s style. So I kind of get it. And two, that it happened in Port Jefferson, which is a town in Suffolk County that I have not only been to, but have spent significant time in. Meaning I could picture every single thing, knew exactly where they were and have used the exit on the Northern State Parkway that the final moments of the book took place at. The Port Jeff girls basketball team won a Long Island championship last weekend. In real life, not the book.
In Which Spinoffs Continue to be my Kryptonite. Especially Well-Written Ones
Mistletoe and Mr. Right by Sarah Morgenthaler
Lana Montgomery is everything the quirky small town of Moose Springs, Alaska can't stand: a rich socialite with dreams of changing things for the better. But Lana's determined to prove that she belongs...even if it means trading her stilettos for snow boots and tracking one of the town's hairiest Christmas mysteries: the Santa Moose, an antlered Grinch hell-bent on destroying every bit of holiday cheer (and tinsel) it can sink its teeth into.
And really...how hard could it be?
The last few years have been tough on Rick Harding, and it's not getting any easier now that his dream girl's back in town. When Lana accidentally tranquilizes him instead of the Santa Moose, it's clear she needs help, fast...and this could be his chance to finally catch her eye. It's an all-out Christmas war, but if they can nab that darn moose before it destroys the town, Rick and Lana might finally find a place where they both belong...together.
I mentioned The Tourist Attraction in my January list, and this is the second in the Moose Springs trio. And it’s so good! I wish people were all as nice to Lana as Rick was. It’s what she deserved! More small-town antics, more kissing, another moose. This one was just as cute as the original book, especially because it brought back original characters and Zoey and Graham were so goddamn adorable as a committed couple I genuinely feared for the state of my teeth.
Enjoy the View by Sarah Morgenthaler
Former Hollywood darling River Lane's acting career is tanking fast. Determined to start fresh behind the camera, she agrees to film a documentary about the picturesque small town of Moose Springs, Alaska. The assignment should have been easy, but the quirky locals want nothing to do with River. Well, too bad: River's going to make this film and prove herself, no matter what it takes.
Or what (literal) mountain she has to climb.
Easton Lockett may be a gentle giant, but he knows a thing or two about survival. If he can keep everyone in line, he should be able to get River and her crew up and down Mount Veil in one piece. Turns out that's a big if. The wildlife's wilder than usual, the camera crew's determined to wander off a cliff, and the gorgeous actress is fearless. Falling for River only makes Easton's job tougher, but there's only so long he can hold out against her brilliant smile. When bad weather strikes, putting everyone at risk, it'll take all of Easton's skill to get them back home safely...and convince River she should stay in his arms for good.
Wrapping up the Moose Springs trio, this one might have been my least favorite, but that’s not really saying much. Since I loved them all pretty equally. River and Easton’s banter was grade-A, top-notch, which is a one-way ticket to my reading-heart. Maybe part of the problem (I say problem like there really was one) was that most of the story took place on a mountain. I kind of wanted more small-town shenanigans, and updates on the condos and the state of the town and Graham being mayor. Still, this was very cute. I swooned multiple times. I’ll probably read anything Sarah Morgenthaler writes from here on out.
Seriously, What Is YA? Does Anyone Know?
The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh
In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to   seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans is a safe haven after   she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent in the middle of the carnival season,   Celine is quickly enraptured by the vibrant city, from its music to its fancy soirées and even its danger. She becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of  the group's enigmatic leader, Sébastien Saint Germain.
When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in Sébastien's own lair--the second dead girl to turn up in recent weeks--Celine battles her attraction to Sébastien and suspicions about his guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.
After a third murder, New  Orleans becomes gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the  loose--one who has now set Celine in his sights. As the murderer stalks  her, Celine finally takes matters into her own hands, only to find  herself caught in the midst of an age-old feud between the darkest  creatures of the night, where the price of forbidden love is her life.
Like I said last month, I put a hold on pretty much everything Renee Ahdieh had written in my library. And this was just as good as the last series I read. Her world building is just—chef’s kiss, gorgeous. I dream of writing this airy, magical way, that makes you feel like you’re in New Orleans. That being said, I do not know what kid is reading this because apparently this is YA and I had to read every single word to figure out what was going on. Now, I know there are two more books in the series, but this one felt like a lot of set up and I spent most of it being like...will this make sense eventually? It did, but only during a very rushed climax of final few chapters. The sequel isn’t available on Kindle at the library, and I haven’t bought it yet. So, that’s probably kind of telling.

But animal-loving Bree does become alarmed when she realizes how many islanders have been cut off from their beloved pets. Now it’s up to her to save as many of Little Bridge’s cats and dogs as she can . . . but to do so, she’s going to need help—help she has no choice but to accept from her boss’s sexy nephew, Drew Hartwell, the Mermaid Café’s most notorious heartbreaker.
But when Bree starts falling for Drew, just as Little Bridge’s power is restored and her penitent ex shows up, she has to ask herself if her island fling was only a result of the stormy weather, or if it could last during clear skies too.
I love Meg Cabot. That should be stated upfront and at the very beginning because for a very long time I have claimed that being Meg Cabot was my dream job. I’ve read pretty much every book Meg Cabot has ever written and was fairly certain I’d be into these once I did read them. Only I was...not. Not really. Everything in this book happened so quickly, I felt like I was the one in the hurricane. People were kissing and then they were having sex and there was a storm and pets and then—it was over? The pacing was all over the place, I had no idea why Drew and Bree liked each other, some guy kicked a dog at one point?? It was weird. Which leads us to—
No Offense by Meg Cabot
A broken engagement only gave Molly Montgomery additional incentive to follow her dream job from the Colorado Rockies to the Florida Keys. Now, as Little Bridge Island Public Library’s head of children’s services, Molly hopes the messiest thing in her life will be her sticky-note covered desk. But fate—in the form of a newborn left in the restroom—has other ideas. So does the sheriff who comes to investigate the “abandonment”.  When John Hartwell folds all six-feet-three of himself into a tiny chair and insists that whoever left the baby is a criminal, Molly begs to differ and asks what he’s doing about the Island’s real crime wave (if thefts of items from homes that have been left unlocked could be called that). Not the best of starts, but the man’s arrogance is almost as distracting as his blue eyes. Almost…
John would be pretty irritated if one of his deputies had a desk as disorderly as Molly’s. Good thing she doesn’t work for him, considering how attracted he is to her. Molly’s lilting librarian voice makes even the saltiest remarks go down sweeter, which is bad as long as she’s a witness but might be good once the case is solved—provided he hasn’t gotten on her last nerve by then. Recently divorced, John has been having trouble adjusting to single life as well as single parenthood. But something in Molly’s beautiful smile gives John hope that his old life on Little Bridge might suddenly hold new promise—if only they can get over their differences.
This isn’t a sequel SEQUEL, but another one of those “exists in the same universe,” or same town, as it were, and it was better than No Judgments. Molly and John actually had a few legitimate conversations before they started kissing. The conflict was still weird and sort of forced, this was not Meg’s usual banter (I fell like I can call her Meg at this point, y’know?) and, again, the ending just felt like it...happened. I don’t know guys, maybe I should just reread The Boy Is Back. Or that quasi Persephone-Hades series. It’s been awhile. On that one, at least. I read The Boy Is Back like six months ago.
ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING ROM COM THAT I CANNOT BELIEVE I FINISHED, SOMEONE GIVE ME A PRIZE FOR FINISHING THIS
Fight or Flight by Samantha Young
The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to   Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn't hell enough, a cloud of   volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to   Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an   arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from   under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava's ever had. And  that's all it was--until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.
When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb's orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he's stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart's in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she's made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn't quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her...
When I tell you guys that this was the worst book I have read in recent memory, I am not kidding. Might actually be the worst book I have ever read. Bar none. And that’s saying something because one time I had to read Ender’s Game in college and that, like, physically pained me. This was awful. Awful people. Awful plot. Awful resolution. AWFUL. Where to start? Well, I’m not going to apologize for spoilers, because God help us all, do not read this book. Ava has been through so many horrible things in her life it was like someone was trying to set a record. Bad parents, cheating ex-boyfriend, dead former best friend who was former because of the cheating ex-boyfriend. Naturally, this made her a control freak because—of course, or something. And Caleb! Oh my God, fucking Caleb Scott. The dickwad. I’ve never rooted for anyone to not get the girl more. When Ava “broke up” with him (they were never really together) I might have cheered. Shitty things does not give you an excuse to be a dick, and Caleb was a dick. Seriously, he started crying about how his ex-fiance KILLED THEIR BABY and I was like—this cannot possibly be a real book. It was! With lots of abortion opinions out of FUCKING nowhere, and weird possessive behavior from, like, every dude in it. Both Ava AND her best friend (not the dead one, a different one) got assaulted at one point. I kept reading solely because I was desperate to see how they rationalized Ava and Caleb getting back together at the end and they didn’t. He showed up on her flight when her boss came up with a fake work trip so he could sit next to her on the plane. What? WHAT?? It was so dumb. So bad. I can’t believe I read it.

a slow dance?
PROMPT :: Dance Me Into A Stupor
Rating: SFW || Barbatos’ Warning: Out-of-context spoiler for Belphie’s prompt
Words: 250-400 words per character
Characters: Demon brothers + MC / Gender-neutral Reader
Notes: This isn’t… my usual quality of writing but please be patient with me! I’m running late on a few school deadlines so I’ve crammed this a bit to keep up with the schedule. I hope everyone still liked this! And I’ll do my best on the next prompts (ಥ﹏ಥ)
LUCIFER
“So…”
“So…?” You asked, eyes staring at Lucifer’s for inquiry.
The two of you were on a firm waltz hold, the closed position led by the Avatar of Pride stood strong and proud in the middle of the ballroom. Diavolo’s lavish parties never get old in this part of Devildom.
You absolutely love attending such events, considering that a certain someone is always wearing those stylish high-class suits. So form-fitting and deliciously snug on the–
“Well,” Breaking character from his usual calm facade, the ravenet broke off eye contact with you, his voice laced with… guilt? “I suppose an apology is past overdue…?”
You blinked once.
Twice.
“Apology for what?”
He started at you for a few moments, bewildered at the nonchalant answer.
“My behaviour from our first dance, during the third day of the retreat in Lord Diavolo’s castle.” He explained briefly, the following words were chosen carefully, “I was quite concerned for my brothers’ well-being that I threatened you.”
Oh, that…
“You weren’t threatened at all, were you?” Lucifer grinned at you with a seemingly concerned face.
“I probably was,” You replied, but then sheepishly lowered your gaze in embarrassment, “But then I forgot about it.”
The dark-haired demon shook his head in affection, “What am I going to do with you..?”
MAMMON
Dances… aren’t really your thing. The first time you’ve danced with a demon here in Devildom, Lucifer was whisking you away with an unnaturally strong hold and whispering death threats above your head.
It’s the kind of thing that makes you not want to participate in the waltz. Ever.
That is, until Mammon, all in his glorious demon-form, walked up to you with that adorable blushing face. For a moment, he stood still. Hesitation is visible in his face and it seemed that he was struggling in forming cohesive sentences.
Does he want to…?
“W-Well, if ya a-ain’t got a partner like the loser Levi is, the Great Mammon is still w-willing to spare his first dance with ya.” He said to you, forcing out the words from his mouth.
Still…?
As if you can say no to Mammon’s roundabout way of inquiry. “I’d love to dance with you, Mammon.”
“Y-Yeah, of course ya do.” The Avatar of Greed huffed, offering his hand, “U-Unlike last time when… when Lucifer’s got all buddy-buddy with ya as if his stinky ass’ got a pact with ya.”
“Oh…” So that’s what this is about… With a slight giggle, you positioned yourself infront of him at a standard waltz hold, “If it’s any consolation… I was hoping to have my first dance with you, back then.”
Processing your statement, he remained silent and eyes were as wide as the full moon seen from the hall. The white-haired demon’s expression changed from surprise to doubt to happiness within a split second.
“Really?” He breathed out in disbelief, searching your visage for any trace of a lie.
“Yes.”
“Are ya tellin’ the truth?” Mammon’s grip on your hands tightened, as if he doesn’t want to let go, “Like, really???”
He laughed, a genuine one in a long time, and waltzed you onto the dancefloor all night long.
LEVIATHAN
Hand in hand with Levi, the two of you shared a moment under the moonlight as Lucifer forced the two of you ‘loners’ into participating at the festivities.
Levi kept his eyes down, seemingly more interested in the floor than dancing with you.
You can’t really fault him. Lucifer had dragged the whole house with him to this ball, and it was evident that the Avatar of Envy did not like the plan one bit.
You opened your mouth to break the ice but was cut short by the purple-haired demon, “Man, Asmo took the time to dress you up but your clothes are still all super long.”
“It can’t be helped.” You shook your head with a smile.
At least Levi is also trying to make conversation, rather than completely sulking at the situation you’re both in.
“We didn’t have the time to have it altered.”
“You know, in one of my favourite shoujo anime, ‘I’m a Cafe Maid But It’s A Top Secret Because I Am The Emperor’s Daughter Who Ran Away From My Responsibilities Because My Dad Is Forcing Me To Marry’,” He started rambling, a slight blush peppered his pale skin, “There’s a part where the princess slips on her dress and one of her suitors, a NEET gaming-addict who is also a shut in and doesn’t have any friends except for his pet fish, caught her and it’s so romantic–”
He stopped mid-sentence, foot slipping at the excessive amount of cloth on your fur coat.
“Woah, careful, Levi!” You caught him, one hand cradling him by the shoulders and the other stabilizing him from the small of his back to avoid a sudden fall. Levi held on to you for support, momentarily paralyzed.
“.…!” He met your worried gaze, his face heating up at your closeness and the warmth of your arms surrounding him.
“Are you okay?” You asked, holding him tight liken of a fragile porcelain vase that will shatter if you let him fall, “Did you hurt yourself?”
“I-I-I-I’m fine…”
Little did you know, his mind was already racing at the possibilities of him being in a shoujo anime with him as the princess and you as his knight and shining armour.
SATAN
Liken of a true gentleman that he is, Satan offered you his hand at the waltz the moment Lord Diavolo ended his speech. He brought you to the middle of the dance floor, leading you with graceful movements - with a fiery spark in his eyes. It’s as if the blonde is showing off his skills to everyone in Devildom.
Weird…
From the corner of your eyes, you saw Lucifer dancing, almost as gracefully, with a rather alluring witch.
Ah, Satan’s as competitive as usual, you thought to yourself, forcing yourself to not roll your eyes at the realization. That would be rude.
With his usual grin, he spoke, “You look amazing. The clothes Asmo picked for you fits you perfectly.”
E-Excuse me, what?
“T-Thank you.” You nodded politely at his words, feeling the rush of your blood on your cheeks.
Satan held you closer, whispering sensually by your right ear, “Your scent is different tonight, too. Something… mysterious.”
Woah–! “Aren’t you…”
The Avatar of Wrath dropped his tone, the type that sent chills down your spine, “You smell delicious–”
“Okay, what gives, Satan?” You pouted at his mischief, shoving him ever so slightly to regain what was left of your personal space. “What’s with all the super specific comments?”
He laughed with great amusement, surprised that you caught on to his jeers quite fast, “I get to see your pretty blushing face.”
“Not fair!”
“I’m not lying, though.” Satan’s expression changed, his visage now conveying a much more genuine smile, “I wanted to show you off to everyone, all in your blushing glory.”
ASMODEUS
Ever since the party started, Asmo hasn’t left your side. Much to Mammon’s absolute horror, the Avatar of Lust has kept his arms around your own all throughout the ceremonies.
He has been flirting with you the whole night with his usual string of compliments.
‘Your eyes gleam whenever you see him, as if there’s a galaxy bursting within them.’
‘Your lips were absolutely alluring, he’d spend hours kissing you and appreciating them as much as he could.’
‘The way your clothes fit your frame so delicately that he wants to ravish you while you–’
It was embarrassing to hear, given that there’s eight of you on the table and the peach-haired demon did not consider lowering his tone. Everyone in the table most definitely heard his soft yet aggressive comments.
It never stopped even until the two of you were dancing together in the waltz. Asmodeus held you in a firm hold, his natural beauty has always struck you whenever he’s this close, “Aren’t our clothes absolutely stunning?”
“They are, Asmo.” You smiled at him, only now do you ever feel the butterflies on your stomach at his words. “Your eye for beauty is unmatched.”
“Of course!” He swayed with you gracefully, his aura of sensuality piercing through the roof at the sight of him in his three piece suit, “This is a special night, I wouldn’t pass off the opportunity to show you off to the whole of Devildom!”
“That is so like you.”Giggling at his comment, you allowed yourself to finally relax and take in his praises. This intimacy is so much better than the earlier situation at the table.
“Come on, honey, give me a graceful twirl~” Asmo beamed at you, leading you into a twirl step with much finesse.
“And again!”
Wait-
“And again!”
“No-!” Feeling dizzy and slightly nauseous at the repeated spin, you tripped on your own shoes and find Asmodeus holding you stable. Sighing at the charming demon’s whims, you shook your head with a smile, “Asmo, this is a slow dance not tango.”
BEELZEBUB
The night is still young yet you sought refuge on the balcony, silently watching the moon from a nearby bench. Nights in the Devildom are often colder than the ones in the human world…
But then again, after months of staying here, how do you compare when traces of the human world get lost in your grasp every moment you spend down here?
You imagine the contrast of the bright sun during summers above and the dim light everyday here in–
“You look like you’re lost in thought.” A voice pulled you from your own thoughts, your head moving ever so slightly to confirm the person who joined you on the balcony.
It’s Beel.
“Ah, well…” You shrugged, rubbing your arms to stave a bit of the chill in the air, “I’m just a bit exhausted from socializing. Formal parties aren’t my thing.”
“It isn’t my thing, too.” The red-haired demon peeled off his coat, gently putting it over your shoulders and sat beside you, “I can’t eat all the food on the table. Lucifer is glaring daggers every time I try. He’s telling me that we’re representing Lord Diavolo’s name so I have to behave.”
You chuckled at his words. Lucifer sounds so much like a father to his siblings.
“We’ll get you some food at home. I’ll cook you some homemade–”
“Do you want to dance?” The Avatar of Gluttony asked you, the sounds of the orchestra from behind the two of you suddenly registering in your mind at the offer.
“What?”
He wants to dance?
“It’s just the two of us here…” He stated, holding out his hand towards you, “We can take it slow so you won’t get exhausted.”
You held his coat closer to you, the corners of your lips curling up at the saccharine proposal. “You’re too sweet, Beel.”
You took his hand.
BELPHEGOR
Despite the rough beginnings of your relationship with him, he tried his best to mend and gain your trust - this time, genuinely.
He’s always been so sweet yet there’s always a distance he’s kept whenever he’s with you. You can’t fault him. Perhaps the guilt of his past actions is always at the back of his mind…
You wanted to help him get past this. And the solution to your questions is today’s dance.
It’s your first dance with Belphegor.
Everything has been laid out perfectly in your mind. You’ll talk to him about it, he’ll answer you honestly and your relationship with him will be a lot stronger than before. Quite Disney-esque but you had to try.
That is… until he declared something that slipped your mind.
“I want to sleep.” He groggily announced, your dance slowing down much more sluggish than the actual tune of the waltz.
“Belphie, come on.” You tried to alert his senses a bit, hoping that he won’t sleep on you, literally, while the music is playing. “It’s Lord Diavolo’s birthday, we have to participate.”
The ravenet yawned, his hands slipping from yours, “The orchestra is playing lullabies, how can I not…”
“Stay with me!” With all your might, you tried to support Belphie’s weight, looking around to see something that would wake him up.
“Look, even Mammon is hitting it up on the dance floor…” Is he fucking dancing dougie… on a damn waltz?! This isn’t a dance battle, Mammon!!!
Scandalized at his inappropriate dance to a waltz, you shrugged it off, “Okay, we’re not watching him.”
“You’re as soft and warm as a pillow.” Belphie rubbed his head against yours, his body now shamelessly draped over yours while you struggled to lead him to the dance.
“D-Don’t you think this is a bit too close for a formal dance, Belphie?”
“Mnn…”
Very heavy!

Josh,
Sometimes it's really fucking difficult to not believe that the universe is personally biased against me. And I know that's kind of rich coming from the one of us that didn't get driven to suicide. But I just, I know you of all people would understand. I wish I had you to really talk to right now.
I'm gonna ramble because I just need someone to listen. But where to fucking start? Life right now is just spinning plates. On one day this week I found out a critical hospital referral I was relying on had never been made; I was rejected by yet another landlord for a house next year that I'd really been betting on; my supervisor met with and bullied me for a solid two hours and my one social event of the week got cancelled. So, that's about when it all started to get too much.
The doctor I've been seeing has been incompetent from the start and made so much work for me in the 6 months I've been in her care. Despite diagnosing my Potentially Life Threatening connective tissue disease, she never even named it in our appointments, leaving me to discover the true horrors of my body through playing detective with my blood results. Long story short, to be confident that I can go on a treatment for it without bleeding out, I need to see a geneticist. But despite agreeing that I should see one, she's refusing to refer me to one directly. Instead, she's referring me to a pain rehab clinic at a separate hospital and saying they can internally refer me to genetics. The wait on the pain rehab clinic? At least two years. Plus, of course none of this information was forthcoming and required weeks of emailing back and forth. So now I'm angry, anxious and stressed about my health. I want to make a formal complaint but I don't know when I'll find the time.
That wasn't even the worst thing, though. The worst thing was uni reminding me just one last time that it truly doesn't give a shit about its students and why I hate it to its very core. The final piece of work I have left to hand in is a research project that I've been working on all year. However, my supervisor is an utter cunt, and I don't say that lightly. He's incredibly narcissistic and rude for a start. For a presentation I had to do, he forced me to use his own slides without ever looking at mine. He once ended an online meeting because I misspoke when explaining a figure, telling me to call him back when I knew what I was on about because he "never forgets what he sees and doesn't want his brain soiled with incorrect information." Given he never remembers what we've spoken about from one meeting to the next, I call bullshit. Oh and this week? He asked me to explain a figure to him and when he said he didn't understand I asked him if he was looking at my screen share. He said no. I just despair!
To make matters worse, he's never fucking happy with me. He's made me start my work from scratch 3 times now and had a different problem each time. We're rapidly approaching the deadline now, so to get all the work done for the 3rd time I've been working 9am-5pm 6 days a week. Not that he cares. The results don't fit his hypothesis, so I must simply be incompetent. He even once had the audacity to suggest that I "didn't want to do the work" while looking through a 70 page document of my results, because I couldn't explain the findings of a figure I'd made a month ago off the top of my head.
In this weeks meeting, he again gave me an extortionate list of new tasks to do, while berating me at every turn. With a month left submit my thesis and my write up not started, I tried to explain to him that I wouldn't have time to complete the list. He just shrugged and said, "Well I think you should do it." And yes, this man is aware that I have been struggling physically and mentally recently.
I didn't know what else to do to make him listen, so I contacted the course supervisor (who I'd already briefly made aware of my issues with him). She told me to "quit" and "just get on with writing my thesis"... until four hours later after she had spoken to my supervisor and completely changed her mind. She video called me to tell me to do the work and I just broke down. I don't make a habit of ugly sobbing in front of people I've only ever met twice over Microsoft Teams, but this was a particularly bad day.
"Trying to do this work is going to destroy my physical and mental health."
"I can't do this anymore."
"He never listens to me."
"I've been working 6 days a week and it's killing me."
She didn't care. She told me that since my supervisor is an experienced professional, he must know how much he's asking of me and since he insists it's quick and easy stuff, it must be. This man has never done this analysis himself. He doesn't even know how; half the stuff one of his lab workers taught me and the rest I taught myself.
"Chill out" and "calm down" she told me, "do the work and if you have any problems ask John (the lab worker)"
By the time I pressed the leave button, I could barely breathe, let alone talk. I was just choking and sobbing and had snot pouring down my face. I was just so tired. So stressed. So... ignored. I didn't know where I would find the hours in the day, but I started by cancelling the trip to see my parents this weekend. To them I am not a student, and a student with health problems at that. I am simply a machine to use for free research.
I just wanted the stress to give me a break. I just wanted a break. I was genuinely afraid that my heart was going to stop from the stress alone. I didn't know where else to turn. The counseling service put me on a waiting list. My tutor told me to "just keep trying my best". My mentor told me to talk to my course supervisor. My course supervisor told me to work. A was busy revising for an exam the next day and I didn't want to bother him. So, I turned to my unhealthy coping mechanisms instead.
I didn't mean to do it as badly as I did. I just wanted to scratch my skin enough to feel it burn and give me something else to feel instead of the huge mass in my chest. But the scissors were sharper than I thought and when I looked down there were four long cuts that had gone through the skin and fat. I knew immediately I'd fucked up. There was no way those edges were coming together on their own. Honestly, I was just mad I'd given myself something else to do. So, I covered them with gauze and tape and kept on working. Because I needed to work. I needed to get it done. I would deal with going to the hospital later but I couldn't lose these working hours.
Once the blood was dripping from the gauze I finally, begrudgingly, went to the hospital. Honestly? They were surprisingly nice. They were understanding and they listened. I was so worried that they'd think I was some cringy emo kid looking for attention. I honestly felt like a total knob going there, but I didn't have a choice. I never felt judged or like they thought I was wasting their time or that it was all my fault. Of course, I know that it was my fault and I felt like a fool. But I also don't blame myself for becoming so desperate. At one point a doctor came in with a medical student who was visibly shy and embarrassed when examining me. I told her I had a place at medical school, so not to worry as I'd be in her place soon. And again, I was shocked because they didn't once tell me not to go. I thought they were going to say "if you can't cope right now, starting medical school isn't for you!" But they never said anything like that. Instead they were shocked I'd gotten in to such a good uni and seemed incredibly genuine when they wished me well.
Oh, and the wounds? Thankfully I didn't need stitches so I got them pulled together again with steri-strips. And in case you didn't believe me that I didn't intend them to be so bad, I nearly passed out three times after looking at them. So, I truly am a fucking idiot, Josh. Lesson learnt, I suppose. Though I'm still afraid what will happen next time I run out of options.
It's finally the end of the week now, but the universe still hasn't given me a break. My mum called earlier and told me my rabbit will be crossing the rainbow bridge tomorrow as he seems to have had a stroke. I mean, it's a small mercy that he's an old bunny and he's been unwell for a long time, so it's not a shock. But it's still so sad and I'll miss him so much. What really tops it all off is that I was going to see him this weekend until I had to cancel my trip home due to the workload.
Man, I just. Why does shit stuff seem to come so easily to me? It's difficult not to feel personally victimized when shit news after shit news lines up so well. I wish good things came as thick and fast. I hope to fuck my luck changes soon because honestly I'm terrified that it's taking years off my life.
Thanks for listening, Josh,
C

Yes, Sheriff || Chapter 1
Sheriff Carol Danvers takes her job of protecting the citizens of her small town very seriously — there are just some that she cares about more than others. A lot more, in fact, and she will take care of her sweet baby girl whether she likes it or not.
Tumblr media
relationship: Carol Danvers/Reader rating: Explicit chapters: 1/? length: 5,413 warnings: Dark Carol Danvers, coercion, manipulation, noncon and dubcon sexual situations, Dead Dove: Do Not Eat  additional warnings: open the read more and CTRL + F, search “content warnings” to skip to detailed trigger warnings at the bottom of the chapter.
This is my entry for searchforanotherway’s Onyx Night Challenge! My plan is for this story to span several chapters, so it certainly won’t be finished by the deadline of January 11th but I wanted to try and write a fic longer than just a oneshot. That being said this chapter can stand alone and doesn’t have to be read in conjunction with other chapters for plot coherency or effect. Oh, also please keep in mind that I’ve never written a reader insert before, so go easy on me if anything seems off!
Being the sheriff of a very small town and the rather empty surrounding county came with some very particular challenges Carol hadn’t necessarily expected when she signed on. Burgess was mostly concentrated in a small area where the main town was built, about three or four streets worth of businesses. Beyond that were what they jokingly referred to within the department as the Suburbs, mostly cute little farmhouses with plenty of space in between. Of course, the distance between plots hadn’t done them any good when the fire broke out about 6 years ago, before Carol signed on with the department, and had taken out 12 houses. 36 people had died, the fire was so hot and spread so fast through the 100 year old homes the volunteer fire department had barely been able to keep it from jumping the road.
Y/N’s parents, her only family, had been 2 of the casualties. She would’ve been too, had she not been spending the night at a friends house on the other side of the Suburbs. From what Carol had been able to gather, the young woman had just graduated from getting her Masters degree in library sciences and had intended to only move back home for a little while before moving to the city permanently. The death of her parents had destroyed many of her plans, especially when she had to deal with so much fallout from the insurance companies and lawyers. Luckily her family had owned the land her house sat on, the money from the home insurance had come through and y/n inherited everything. She’d rebuilt the house, smaller but just as old fashioned in design, and taken a job as the town’s librarian, enabling the previous one to retire (the woman had been older, didn’t actually have the education necessary to be a librarian and was happy to step aside so sweet little y/n could have the position).
Most of the town seemed to have a soft spot for y/n. When Carol first started, the entire population had been leery of her. She’d expected it, luckily, and wasn’t shocked by the reserved nature of the people she served. She was relatively shocked when they started accepting her presence, their topics of conversation ranging fromnow the town fair is very important around here so you need to handle it correctly—those townies will run amok if you’re not careful to do you think you could drive past the library this evening while y/n walks to her car? I get so worried when she’s out late like that with no one around. It was consistent that the townsfolk would find a way to wriggle y/n into conversation but they didn’t seem to know it was a collective issue; every person who asked her devote some extra attention to the young woman did so covertly, as if to prevent anyone from knowing. It was endearing and cute and Carol honestly didn’t have much to do most of the time so she didn’t mind the little side tasks.
The small town and county police department was made up of 90% locals who were happy to respond to most calls. They mostly dealt with domestics and property violations, occasionally some sort of larceny or robbery or breaking and entering calls. Wilson and Barnes were trained paramedics and dealt with the medical calls, luckily, although when she rolled into town Carol had forced all of her deputies to get certified in multiple emergency life saving techniques. The nearest ambulance dispatch was an hour away and she was baffled the former Sheriff hadn’t enforced even basic CPR certifications. Rogers, one of her two deputies, handled most of the domestics with Carol as his back up if necessary (it was almost never necessary, even if Rogers didn’t have that disarming Good Ol’ Boy Charm he had biceps as wide as y/n’s thighs and could handle most things on his own). Rhodes, her second deputy, was good for dealing with bored teenagers who liked to play at crime, breaking and entering and minor burglary, along with trespassing. Property violations and agricultural issues were big in a town like Burgess too, but Odinson (another transplant like herself) had grown up in an even tinier town devoted to farming and could handle such problems in his sleep. Pietro, the youngest and greenest in the department, handled what she considered the beat; traffic and parking violations, jaywalking that caused endangerment, vandalism, etc. Most of what came down on Carol’s shoulders were the big issues—the small amount of drug situations they dealt with, any prostitution or assaults. The other officers said they liked her to be open for those sorts of calls, which left her driving around on patrol at least 50% of the time with nothing to do.
It gave her more time to talk to locals than she expected, more time to subtly watch y/n than she could’ve ever anticipated. The more she watched her, the bigger Carol’s problem became; y/n was lovely and sweet and beautiful and Carol was finding that she had a crush on the young woman. Well, it might’ve started as a crush. Carol found herself very quickly falling down a rabbit hole of obsession and honestly wasn’t all that mad about it—the longer she watched, the more she realized how perfect y/n was, in general and for her.
Carol had embraced her bisexuality at a young age, had dated men and women over the years but never really found anyone to her liking. She had an incredibly dominant personality, both in general and in the bedroom and finding someone willing to unconditionally follow direction was hard. Moving to a small town had seemed like a sexual death sentence in all honesty, until she came across y/n. She was so small and demure, averted her eyes and blushed constantly under Carol’s strong gaze and said yes Sheriff when prompted with the most precious drawl. Carol could look down her nose at the woman, could imagine the way she’d feel slotted right against her chest with her head tucked perfectly under her chin, knew that y/n was just short enough that she’d have to stand on her tiptoes when Carol put her thigh right between those pretty legs and made her work for her orgasm, those tiptoes slipping for purchase while her pussy ground hard into her thigh.
It had gotten harder and harder to ignore, the all too carnal desires she had for the young woman and she was relieved when she decided there was no reason to ignore them. There was no reason not to take y/n as her own— she’d take good care of her, in every way, and love her so deeply that she’d never dream of anything else, never want anyone else. Carol was meticulous and careful and manipulative, even if she pretended not to be. It wouldn’t be hard to get her right where she wanted her.
The spark plugs in the glove box of her cruiser were a testament to that. It had been easily to quickly take them after the sun had gone down, Carol knew for a fact there weren’t security cameras anywhere nearby and there was no one around to see (usually the library was rather busy right up until close, but most of the population was at the high school football game a town over). Several of her officers were there too, Carol correctly assuming that it would be a slow night for calls. Peter Parker had offered to take the dispatch shift and run the receptionist desk so that the usual evening dispatcher, Wanda could attend the game too.
Carol sat straighter in her seat as y/n emerged from the library, taking the time to carefully lock the doors—first the door that led straight to the her help desk and then the double doors that opened into the main library, the entrances separated by a wall between the doors and a small hallway that allowed y/n a little bit of privacy in her “office” unless someone needed extra assistance. The keys went into her purse, exchanged for her car keys with a generous pause that made Carol cringe slightly; she wished y/n would have her keys ready and out when she left the building, the long hesitation while she stood alone in the dark was ample opportunity for a mugging or abduction. She’d impress the importance of being prepared and quick once she had an opportunity that wouldn’t betray the fact she’d been watching her from afar.
There was another uncomfortably long pause as she unlocked her car and climbed in, leaving the door open for an extended time while she settled and Carol was sure y/n didn’t lock the doors even once it was closed. It would evidently be a rather long conversation regarding safety. Carol smiled when the car didn’t start after several minutes and turned up her radio. Most of the townsfolk would call the non emergency line at the station when they had car troubles and Carol was nearly positive y/n would do the same. It took about five minutes give or take for her radio to crackle to life, Peter’s voice coming through.
“Sheriff, Rhodey, are either of you near the library? Y/n just called in from the parking lot, she just finished closing up the building and can’t get her car to start."
"I’m just across the street, actually— Coach Steveson asked me to make sure y/n got home alright since he figured nobody would be around because of the game,” it was true, Carol regularly got requests from different citizens asking her or the other officers to check in on people and y/n was one of the top requests, obviously, because everyone knew she was alone, “tell her to wait in her car, I’ll be over in just a second."
"Will do, Sheriff!” There was a click and crackle on the radio and Carol smiled; Peter made an excellent receptionist but his dispatch skills could use some work and professionalism, not that she really minded the candor.
She cranked her car on and reached into the glovebox to retrieve the spark plugs she’d grabbed earlier, glancing at herself carefully in the rearview mirror. Her hair was pulled back to show off her undercut, the front in a twist away from her face with some strands having managed to escape over the course of the day. Y/n liked the undercut, evidenced by how flustered the poor thing got the first day she saw it (actually that was the day Carol realized y/n wasn’t straight, the poor thing had been so caught off guard she’d stuttered and blushed and had 100% rubbed her pretty thighs together under her skirt).
She quickly popped across the street, spark plugs tucked discreetly into her pants pocket and pulled up beside y/n’s car. The door opened immediately, much to Carol’s displeasure; she was sure Peter relayed the message that y/n was to stay in her car. The order was likely too ambiguous and Carol would be more careful in the future.
“I’m so sorry to bother you Sheriff,” y/n started immediately as Carol exited her cruiser, “I hate to call but my car won’t start, I could pop the hood but I have no idea what I’m looking for."
She looked embarrassed, hands twisting together at her waist and Carol had to carefully arrange her features to prevent her excitement from showing, her demure little baby was so cute, "that’s alright y/n, I always want you to call if you need help. How about you get back in and pop the hood for me, I’ll take a look."
Y/n did so quickly before joining Carol at the front of the car, much to her amusement, "you go ahead and sit down, sweetheart, I might want you to try cranking the engine, okay? I’ll tell you when."
The pet name was easy to pass under y/n’s radar, the endearments a regular part of the small town life. Even Carol got called sweetheart and honey on a regular basis, but it didn’t stop y/n from blushing darkly all the way down to her chest. Carol carefully kept her eyes from trailing down the neckline of y/n’s sensible tank top (it was hot as hell outside and paired with a long, flowy skirt Carol was sure anyone would think it professional enough for a small town librarian) despite the fact she desperately wanted to know if the redness spread all the way to her tits. The young woman did as directed, quickly hustling around to sit in the driver’s seat with the door open.
It was easy to quickly reattach the spark plugs, just so that when the mechanic showed up in the morning they wouldn’t be suspiciously missing. She didn’t bother disconnecting anything else, instead staying ducked under the hood long enough to justify a good look around before standing straight and closing it.
"There must be something going on below the surface honey, everything up here looks fine,” she stated, walking around to meet y/n as she stood up, “why don’t I give you a ride and I’ll call Tony out in the morning to take a look."
There was a torn look on y/n’s face at the suggestion and Carol watched the gears turn in her head; leaving her car overnight in the lot wasn’t the problem, no one would tow it or anything, the problem would come in the morning when she needed to get back to the library to open. The blonde had already considered all of the options though and smiled sweetly when y/n hesitated.
"I’m just about to get off for the night anyway, we could swing by your place and grab some of your clothes and you can stay the night at mine, I can drop you over here on my way in,” she offered, enjoying the flustered way that y/n shifted on her feet, “I guess I could just drive around to come pick you up at your place before I start my shift…"
The sheer thought of inconveniencing the town Sheriff made y/n look like she might cry and she quickly shook her head, "no, no I can stay over tonight. I’d hate to make you go out of your way—no, thank you so much for the offer, it’s so kind thank you."
Y/n wouldn’t look up from her feet but Carol didn’t push, couldn’t push quite yet. Instead she encouraged y/n to grab her purse and held the door of the passenger seat open while the smaller woman slipped inside. She’d call Tony in the morning, say she couldn’t find anything wrong with the car but would you please take a look for y/n’s peace of mind. The mechanic would surely be happy to help and would make up some excuse for why the car hadn’t started so y/n wouldn’t get embarrassed over not being able to properly start her car.
The ride to y/n’s house only took about five minutes and she was quick to collect an overnight bag before running back out to the cruiser. Carol kept a very careful eye on her as she continued on to her own home, a good fifteen minutes further into the suburbs. She could tell y/n was confused, if Carol’s house was further than hers why couldn’t she stay at her own home overnight? It would’ve been on the Sheriff’s way into town, just a quick stop. But y/n was a good girl and never questioned those she considered superiors, instead just sitting in vague discomfort as they got farther and farther from her home.
Carol lived on what was considered the very edge of town, as a new addition to the population it was hard to get a place closer, but she appreciated the the isolation. Y/n waited until Carol opened her car door to do the same, shuffling nervously along behind her up the steps. The house wasn’t as nice as the one y/n had built but it was quaint and old and smelled like all of the old houses that had survived the fire.
"Here we go,” Carol unlocked the door and waived y/n inside with a pleasant smile, “I left dinner in a slow cooker this morning, give me just a minute to change and I’ll get it all together."
"Oh, Sheriff, I couldn't—"
"Of course you can sweetheart, I’d be insulted if you didn’t,” she joked with a smile, “you can put your stuff where ever, make yourself comfortable, I’ll be right back."
Carol could tell y/n had been expecting her to show her to a bedroom and pressed her lips together; y/n would be sleeping in her bed by the end of the night but the poor thing didn’t know that and wouldn’t know what to do if Carol instructed her to put her things in there. She changed quickly, into a pair of tight joggers and a slightly cropped workout top that showed her abs—she wanted to see what shade of red y/n’s skin would turn at the sight. Plus, she had aspirations of y/n riding the hard planes of her abdomen until she came and a short shirt would make that easier if she could make it happen, no matter how far fetched the hope.
Y/n’s eyes immediately dropped to the exposed skin when Carol returned and the blonde wanted to coo her face turned so red, it was so cute, her baby was so precious. She carefully pretended not to notice the staring, crossing into the kitchen quickly and checking on the crock pot of spicy pulled pork.
"I could put this over a salad for you or put it on a roll, which do you prefer?” She turned back just in time to see y/n’s eyes snap up from where they’d been locked on her ass and was unable to hide the that came over her features; teasing her at this point would be a mistake, but it was so hard not to, “come over here and I’ll make you a plate honey."
Y/n shuffled over, red faced and very obviously embarrassed to have been caught checking out the ass of the local sheriff, "just-just a sandwich, please."
Carol made sure to pull from the bottom of the pot, where the meat would be the spiciest for y/n’s sandwich before handing her the plate and grabbing a bag of chips to go with it from the pantry. Y/n dutifully went to go sit at the table, waiting patiently while Carol fixed herself both a sandwich and a salad. She didn’t bother to ask if y/n drank, pouring them both a large glass of the strongest red wine she currently had in the house (bought specifically for this occasion) and setting one down in front of y/n.
"This is my favourite wine,” she stated, looking to subtly manipulate y/n’s coming actions, “it’s a bit expensive but I haven’t had such lovely company over in a minute, might as well share it."
The wine was already poured, Carol’s favourite, and it was expensive; there was no way y/n would reject it now. The food was spicy, she’d likely drink the entire glass, and with her smaller stature would certainly not be entirely herself afterwards. And poor y/n played right into her hands, following the script Carol had written in her head to a T. She got flirtier as the meal progressed, as her wine disappeared, responding to Carol’s carefully probing words beautifully. The blonde was two seconds from stealing her off her chair to sit her right on her lap when y/n gave a little sigh.
"I think I drank a little more than I meant to,” the words were punctuated by a little hiccup and Carol cooed in response, immediately standing when y/n pressed to her feet.
She didn’t give the shorter woman time to move too far, carefully latching an arm around her waist and drawing her in close, her other hand catching y/n’s cheek gently to direct her gaze, “that’s okay, baby, I’ll take care of you."
Y/n took just a second longer to process than it usually would’ve taken before her cheeks darkened, her lips parting in surprise, "O-oh, I—"
Carol hushed her gently, her lips finding purchase against y/n’s jaw and running the length of her cheek to her ear, "you’re so shy for me baby girl, it’s so precious. I’ve always wondered if that blush goes all the way to your tits."
The tank top came off easily, y/n squeaking in shock but not fast enough to prevent her bra from following. Carol’s hands grasped her hips and she walked the smaller woman backwards until she could lift her to sit on the counter, her lips pressed hungrily against y/n’s own. Her skirt lifted easily until the fabric bunched at her waist and Carol pressed herself firmly between y/n’s thighs, happy for the extra bit of height. She wished she’d put on a strap on after changing, she could’ve slipped right into y/n’s pussy so easily at this angle.
"Wait-wait, Carol—Sh-Sheriff!"
"You’ll feel so good after this,” Carol’s lips trailed down her cheek, to her neck and down to her pretty tits, lapping at her nipple gently, “just let me…"
Her lips engulfed one of y/n’s nipples and she gave a deep, languid suck while the young woman on the counter writhed. One hand kept purchase on y/n’s back, a careful but firm hold to prevent her from squirming away while the other trailed down to her panty covered pussy. She was wet, a spot beginning to form on the fabric and Carol grinned. Her teeth scraped over y/n’s nipple, drawing a sharp cry from her and quickly slipped her fingers up into her wet cunt while she was distracted. Although it didn’t take long for her baby to notice the intrusion, her legs shifting and her thighs attempting to close even as Carol stood between them.
"You’re so wet, baby girl,” she cooed darkly, watching y/n’s face coloured with humiliation, “you want this so bad, don’t you? You want me to make you cum? Huh? On my fingers or my tongue?"
"N-no, wait,” her head spun as she reached down, grabbing Carol’s wrist in a weak attempt to keep her fingers from pumping into her cunt, “Carol, I don't—"
"When we’re fucking you call me Sheriff or Sir, do you understand?” Her thumb gave a rough pass over y/n’s clit and she jumped, a short whine escaping her even as her eyes started to shine with tears, “tell me you understand, y/n."
"Y-yes sir,” she hiccups slightly but was rewarded with Carol’s lips returning to her nipple, tongue laving over her sensitive bud forcefully enough that y/n tried to wiggle away.
Carol immediately withdrew her hand from y/n’s pussy and slapped her cunt hard through the fabric of her panties, earning a yelp and the blonde was forced to hold her hip tightly in place with the other hand, “you don’t try to get away from me baby, not ever."
It was easy to lift y/n over her shoulder, her baby screeching in shock as she was forced to hang upside down. The walk to her bedroom was quick and she tossed y/n onto the bed without hesitation, absently deciding to add more weight to her workouts— she liked manhandling her baby girl and some extra training might help it go smoother, especially if y/n decided to be naughty and needed a bit of extra restraining.
Y/n was still dizzy from the ride, too shocked to attempt to slip off the bed and simply not coordinated enough to try anything clever. Carol caught the edge of her toy box with her toe and dragged it over to the edge of the bed for easy access, slipping onto the mattress and covering y/n’s small body with hers. She quickly returned her mouth to the perky tits beneath her, lips latching onto the under stimulated nipple and sucking hard. Y/n whined him response, chest rising with each hard tug in attempts to lessen the pressure.
"I’m glad your pussy’s so wet,” Carol murmured after releasing the abused nipple with a pop, hand reaching over the edge of the bed to dig one of her smaller strap ons out of the box, “I don’t know if I have any lube."
She whipped her top off quickly after finding the one she wanted, followed by her pants. Forgoing underwear had been convenient and she quickly worked to attach the strap on around her waist. The moment y/n realized what was happening, her face scrunched and the tears came back with a vengeance. The no trying to run away rule was obviously immediately forgotten as she scrambled for purchase on the bed, her coordination nonexistent after the strong wine. Carol reached out and easily flipped her onto her stomach, subduing her flailing limbs with ease.
"What did I say about trying to get away from me baby?” Carol yanked the skirt down over her legs, catching the waistband of her panties in the same tug and shucked both articles across the room, “now I’ve gotta punish you before I fuck you, naughty girl."
"N-No, no! Wha—"
Carol slapped her hand down on y/n’s ass with enough force to make her shriek, the sound lighting the blonde’s pussy up like nobody’s business. She could feel her wetness dripping, the press of the strap on over her clit delicious. When she finished up the spanking, leaving her pretty ass red and raw and painful, Carol flipped y/n onto her back once more. The yelp she let out made the blonde smile, knowing that even the soft fabric of her sheets would feel like sandpaper at the moment.
"Awe, don’t cry baby, shhh,” Carol stretched out above her, letting the cock of her strap on drag against y/n’s wet little cunt in the process and wiped the tears away from her cheeks, “shhh, be a good girl now. You’re gonna take my cock so well, won’t you baby girl?"
"P-please, I don't—"
"You don’t what, baby girl? You don’t wanna take my piece?” Carol’s hand immediately found her wet pussy, scooping a good amount of arousal onto her fingers before bringing it back up to smear the moisture across y/n’s lips and cheeks, “this greedy little cunt disagrees. It wants my cock bad baby and who am I to deny this pretty pussy anything."
The head of the strapon nudged between y/n’s pussy lips, drawing a loud whine. Her knees drew up as Carol pressed deeper and deeper and the blonde was quick to spread her thighs wide, the muscles jumping as she pressed those pretty thighs flat to the mattress. When Carol finally bottomed out, y/n was whining and squirming, hands pressed against her taut abs. The movement chafed her raw ass against the sheets and the blonde knew the pain must’ve been a sharp burn.
"Is it a lot baby?” The blonde panted slightly, clit well stimulated by the strap on, “is that a lot for your little cunny? This is one of the small ones baby girl, you better get used to the stretch."
Carol withdrew and thrust in deeply before y/n could speak, repeating the motion roughly several times before she fell into rhythm pounding away at her pussy. Y/n wailed, her ass dragging brutally over the sheets with each sharp thrust and igniting a truly awful burn. The squelch of her pussy was obscene though and Carol shivered at the sound—she was so wet it was dripping out of her pussy, sliding down her ass crack and soaking into the bedsheets. Her mind might not’ve been entirely on board but her cunt was 100% involved, ready, and excited for the pounding even as her burning ass was rubbed raw by the bedding and the constant, torturous movement.
"God your pussys ruining my sheets baby,” she slapped at y/n’s clit several times in rapid succession, drawing a loud wail from her lips, “your cunts so excited to be fucked, so fucking wet its gushing. You’re gonna be a good girl and cum for me, aren’t you? Cum on my cock baby girl, cum on it!"
Y/n wailed in response, her little body pulling tight for several seconds before she came so hard her eyes rolled back and she shook. Carol fucked her through it with force, only stopping when the desperation for her own orgasm set in. She pulled her cock from y/n’s gaping pussy and removed the strap, dropping it over the side of the bed as she moved up her baby girl’s body until her cunt was positioned over that little gasping mouth.
"Mouth open, baby girl,” she ordered, hands digging into her hair to angle her chin up, “you’re gonna eat my pussy until I cum."
A small noise escaped y/n, some cute little grunting whine as Carol flattened her cunt over her mouth and thrust her hips forward. The drag was lovely, y/n’s open mouth warm and wet against her sopping pussy lips.
"Use your tongue,” she ordered with a small gasp, feeling her orgasm getting closer as her hand closed over the back of y/n’s head to keep her mouth pressed firmly against against her cunt, hips rolling swiftly back and forth as she chased her own end.
She moaned loudly when little kitten licks teased her lower lips, concentrating the movement of her hips to press her clit against y/n’s tongue. The drag was wonderful, a loud cry escaped her lips as she started to cum and she doubled her efforts, fucking y/n’s face brutally into the mattress until it abated. She let her weight rest suffocatingly over y/n’s mouth and nose for several seconds, lifting up just before she could start to panic.
“God that was even better than I could’ve imagined, you’re so good for me baby girl,” Carol slipped down her prone form, kissing her soundly but gently and licking the cum and arousal from her shell shocked face, “fuck, I knew you’d be perfect."
Y/n looked up at the blonde with big, wet eyes even as Carol continued to whisper praises against her lips. A hand had returned to her sopping pussy, Carol collecting her cum with taunting fingers before swiping the residual from her own messy cunt as well, bringing it up to y/n’s mouth. When her baby girl’s lips didn’t open she grabbed her jaw, squeezing with increasing pressure until her mouth opened and she was able to shovel the mix of their cum into her mouth.
"Swallow it down baby girl,” Carol cooed, hand sealing over y/n’s nose and mouth tightly until her throat visibly worked several times to swallow the load, “so good, so precious sweet girl."
The blonde’s eyes glanced to the bedside table and she sighed lightly, ignoring the huge wet spot on the bed beneath y/n and lying to her left on the mattress. She easily pulled the smaller woman on top of her, y/n’s little waist cushioned between her sticky thighs and her head rested perfectly between Carol’s breasts. She could see the bright red, chafed skin from her position and smiled darkly—y/n would feel it for days, everytime she sat would be a reminder.
"It’s gotten late baby, we should go to sleep. We’ll wake up early and go to breakfast at the diner before I drop you off at work,” her hands worked gently up and down y/n’s back with soft, sleepy touches, brushing the top of her ass with careful fingers.
“I—”
Carol hushed her before she could get a word in, “go to sleep baby, the alcohol in your system must be making you drowsy by now, especially after that kind of fucking. We’ll talk in the morning."
content warnings: alcohol consumption, nonconsenual vaginal fingering, strap on insertion and fucking, ass and pussy spanking, cunnilingus and face riding (is that what that’s called? i’m honestly not sure how to tag that), suffocation, and cum eating. hmu if i’ve missed anything.

How do you deal with your ADHD without meds?
With a combination of caffeine, compensatory strategies, and technology.
Many people assume that ADHD is the result of an over-active brain, but ADHD actually results from an under-active brain - the part of my brain that regulates my attention and cognitive resources does not run at full capacity, which makes it extremely difficult for me to properly allocate my cognitive resources and avoid distractions. My brain is like a boat with an under-powered engine - I can still move forward just like everybody else, but it takes a lot less force to make me drift off course. This is why ADHD is treated with stimulant medication. Stimulants “power up” the part of my brain that is lacking, so to speak, and allow me to regulate my attention like everybody else. Caffeine is a stimulant, and although it’s nowhere near as powerful as a prescription stimulant, it has a similar (but weaker) effect on me. So I drink coffee all goddamn day. I drink it to focus at work, and I drink it in the evening when I am blogging/writing fiction/working on art. Because of my ADHD, coffee does not make me jittery or prevent me from sleeping - on the contrary, it calms me down and helps me to focus. I’m fully addicted to it - I get wicked headaches from caffeine withdrawal if I try to go a full day without it - but for me personally, it’s worth it for the focusing effect.
I also have to purposely find strategies to work around my ADHD, which can mean adjusting my life in both big and small ways. I use a Bullet Journal to keep track of things, because I can customize it in ways that make sense for my life and my brain. All of my houseplants are cacti that thrive on neglect. I love dogs, and having a dog of my own is super important to me, but I don’t realistically have the ability to take care of a dog that needs hours of walks and exercise and grooming every day - so I have a small, anxious, short-haired chihuahua that sleeps most of the day and needs only two short walks around the block for exercise. On a more dramatic note, I struggle with punctuality and getting up in the mornings, so I chose a career and an employer where I have some flexibility in my start times and a fast-paced, somewhat unpredictable environment with a lot of ability to control what I do each day - if I had to work in a highly regimented, structured job with strict start times (teacher, lawyer, etc) I would flounder. My choice of partner is also important for managing my ADHD - I struggled a lot more when I had a very mentally ill partner who required a lot of caretaking, as this greatly increased the number of tasks I needed to juggle. I now have a very high-functioning partner who is happy to divide labour in ways that work for me.
I also take advantage of the technology that is available to me. I have a Google Home, which lets me set reminders and alarms verbally without having to actually stop what I’m doing to bring up an app and type something in - the device also tells me about public transit delays every morning so I know if I need to leave earlier, and it can locate my phone, which I am constantly setting down and misplacing. I use organization and to-do apps to make sure essential tasks are getting done, especially at work, and I rely heavily on Google calendar to map out deadlines and events. My bill payments are largely automated, and a lot of the essential things I need to buy on a regular basis (pet supplies, basic toiletries, etc) are set up to automatically re-order. Technology was meant to make our lives easier, and I try to use it to its fullest capacity to work around my ADHD. I can definitely still tell that I have symptoms, but at the moment, I am able to satisfactorily manage the condition without medication. This strategies may not work for everyone, but for me at least, they allow me to function at a similar level to my non-ADHD peers. Hope this answers your question!Miss Mentelle

"I think I'm in love with you and I'm terrified." For Supercat. 😊
Okay so this is an AU in which Kara’s a student at NCU and also the captain of the all girls soccer team. Cat is a single mother with a five years old baby Carter who loves Dinosaurs and Spaghettis. Also, Alex and Lucy are a couple. Hope you like it, it’s full of fluff.
“This day can’t possibly get worse,” Kara grumbles, carefully placing her coffee on the table before sitting down in front of it.
In front of her, Alex barely glances up from her laptop. Dark circles underline her eyes, she looks a little disheveled and her pale-blue shirt is crumpled, showing a little red stain near her collar.
“All things considered, maybe my day isn’t going so bad … you look terrible,” Kara frowns, tilting her head to the side. “When was the last time you took a shower?”
“Fuck off,” Alex groans, her fingers hitting the keyboard with a little too much force. The laptop is a little old and the keys make a lot of noise, especially under the older Danvers stressful typing.
Kara winces but decides against saying something. Instead, she simply grabs her cup and raises it to her lips.
“Ah, the Danvers sisters!”
She jumps in surprise and almost spills her coffee, catching herself at the very last second.
“Geez Luce! Don’t do that again,” Kara protests before looking up to greet one of her best friend. As soon as her eyes land on the younger Lane, her mind goes blank. “Uh …”
Lucy’s wearing her full business attire, a pencil grey shirt and matching jacket, a perfectly ironed white shirt and a pair of Louboutins. She’s perfectly put together, from the light make-up to make her skin glow to the way her hair softly flows in waves around her features.
“Damn girl, you look good!” Kara eventually smiles, finally recovering the usage of her voice.
“Why, thank you! It was mock-trial this morning,” Lucy replies, her smile a little smug and her voice lined with pride. “Hi babe. Still working on your paper?”
Lucy sits down next to Alex and drops a kiss on her cheek, earning herself a smile. It’s brief but it’s sweet and the older Danvers slows down in her typing. She seems to relax a little next to Lucy and even though she doesn’t stop writing, she seems a little more at ease.
“The deadline is tomorrow and I’m nowhere near finished,” Alex nods with a frustrated sigh.
“What do you need?” Lucy asks, stealing a sip off Kara’s cup.
“Hey, that’s mine!” Kara protests, retrieving her coffee and keeping it in her hands.
“I need Mrs Luthor to come down with a bad case of whatever disease will keep her in bed for at least a week,” Alex groans, sounding tired and a little whiny.
Kara shakes her head and gives her sister an apologetic look “Lena says her mom’s never sick …”
“I know! It’s so unfair,” Alex sighs again.
After that, she gets back to her writing and Kara and Lucy start up a conversation about the upcoming spring break.
---Kara’s strolling down the aisles of the supermarket, looking for Alex’s specific beers, when something crashes in her legs. She lets out a painful gasp before looking down, her eyes falling into a pair of sheepish, shy blue eyes that belongs to a very young boy.
“Whoa, easy buddy! Are you alright?” Kara asks, letting go of her cart to crouch down in front of the little boy. He doesn’t look much older than six or seven, dark blond curls bouncing around his face and there’s a few cartoon dinosaurs plastered on his navy sweater. “Are you hurt?”
The boy shakes his head no and then offers her a tiny, uncertain smile. Kara instantly returns the gesture, widely smiling at the boy.
“Cool sweater, by the way. I love dinosaurs,” Kara says, pointing toward the clothes.
That seems to do the trick because the next thing she knows, the boy is suddenly babbling about tyrannosaurus and velociraptors and Kara would have never thought, not in a million years, that someone so young could so easily cite dinosaurs species.
“Whoa, slow down kid. First thing first, what’s your name? I’m pretty sure it’s not T-Rex …” Kara teases and the boy giggles, shaking his head no.
“No, silly! I’m Carter,” the boy says with a grin. “What’s your name?”
“Very nice to meet you, Carter. My name is Kara,” Kara replies and very seriously extends a hand to him. He looks very pleased and takes it without hesitating. “Now, where are your parents? You look a little young to do your grocery shopping all by yourself.”
“I dunno,” Carter says and he suddenly looks a little afraid. “I wanted to see the stuffed pandas, but … I can’t find them.”
His lower lip wobbles and Kara can see the tears gathering in his blue eyes. She smiles and offers him her hand again “Well, let’s go find the pandas!”
Carter hesitates for just a few seconds before placing his hand in hers. Kara grabs her cart with her free hand and starts pushing. “Who’s doing the shopping though, if you’re only here for the stuffed animals? I’m pretty sure you don’t eat stuffed animals … right?”
Carter giggles again. “You’re silly! Mom’s buying the food.”
Kara laughs “Oh, I’m very silly, my sister always says so. Now let’s go find your mom and then we’ll ask her to show you the pandas. How about that?”
Carter nods, looking a little more peaceful now.
“What does she look like, your mother? Does she like dinosaurs too?” Kara asks, keeping an eye on all the women they cross path with. She figures the first panicked one she sees will be Carter’s mother.
“I dunno, she don’t talk about it much,” Carter shrugs.
“She doesn’t,” Kara corrects, absentmindedly. Carter glances up at her with a frown. “She doesn’t talk about it, not she don’t.”
He shrugs again and stays quiet.
“What’s your mom’s name?” Kara asks and when Carter looks at her, she sees the incomprehension in his eyes and figures he must be even younger than she first thought.
“Mom,” Carter replies, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. It makes Kara chuckle, lightly.
“Of course, my bad. So, what does she look like?” Kara pushes, because it’s a big supermarket and the aisles are wide and long. She doesn’t want to leave a panicked mom waiting.
“Like me,” Carter answers with another shrug and Kara thinks she might need to go to the cashiers and ask one of them to make an announcement.
She’s considering it when a shout echoes behind her. “Carter!”
Kara and the little boy turn around at the same time to see a woman run their way.
She’s small but fast, with short blond hair flowing around her features as her heels hit the bland floor tile and dressed in casual blue-jeans and a soft grey pull over, a purse hanging from her shoulder.
“Mom!” Carter says, letting go of Kara’s hand to run toward his mother.
Kara stays back and watches as the woman sweeps her son off the floor and hugs him tightly, a little desperately even. She doesn’t hear what Carter says to his mother but after a little while, the woman approaches her, the little boy still in her arms.
“Thank you, so much,” the woman eventually says and up close, Kara can see the hazel green eyes. They’re shining with relief and she sounds extremely grateful. “Carter says you were trying to find me …”
“It’s nothing, really,” Kara smiles and shakes her head. “I was about to head to the cashiers so they could announce it in the mic …”
“I’m really grateful you found him, I don’t know what …” the woman chokes on her words and hugs Carter a little more.
“It was a pleasure, we had some fun talking about dinosaurs and stuffed pandas,” Kara explains and she waves at the boy, who returns it with a grin.
“Kara like dinos!” Carter explains, one hand playing with his mother’s hair and the other waving in Kara’s direction.
“Does she, now?” the woman smiles, looking a little more at ease now. “I’m guessing Kara is your name?”
“Kara Danvers, yes. Despite the circumstances, it’s a pleasure to meet you and your son,” Kara extends a hand again. The woman’s handshake is firm, commanding but her skin is soft and warm.
“Cat Grant,” the mother introduces herself. “The little runaway here is Carter Grant but you probably already know that.”
“Don’t worry, he was a perfect gentleman,” Kara grins and she then starts to walk away. “Have a nice day, Miss Grant, Carter …”
“Don’t go!” Carter calls after her and Kara stops, not knowing what to do. She throws a helpless look at Cat and to her surprise, the woman is smiling.
“Seems like you got a fan, Miss Danvers,” Cat says before she looks at her son. The little boy moves to whisper something in her ear that has Cat nod. “How about we all go together for a coffee, a tea, or whatever drink you millenial like nowadays?”
Kara chuckles, a little surprised by the witty comment.
“Hm, I don’t want to intrude … And uh … I’m supposed to meet with my sister in a few hours,” Kara replies, looking a little uncertain.
“It’s just a non-alcoholic, child supervised drink, Miss Danvers,” Cat sasses, rolling her eyes. She looks amused now, despite the few traces of fear still flashing in her green eyes.
Carter is looking at her and his bright blue eyes are so full of hope she doesn’t have the heart to say no. She’s always been too soft when it came to kids.
“Alright, alright,” Kara relents, helpless in the face of Carter’s happy smile. “I’ll meet you in front of the supermarket in half an hour, I still need to do some actual shopping!”
Carter waves as she goes away and she hears him say “See you!” It’s the first time she smiles all the way through grocery shopping.
“Kara” Alex calls, looking up as her sister crosses their living room. “Is there something you want to tell me, about this babysitting gig?”
Kara narrows her eyes at her sister. “What do you mean?”
“Kara, you’re wearing a dress,” Alex gestures to her sister’s outfit with a knowing look in her eyes.
“So? It’s almost summer, what’s wrong with a dress?”
“Nothing’s wrong with a dress. Just, it’s not something I’d wear if I was on my way to babysit a five years old boy,” Alex retorts without missing a beat.
“Alex, leave Kara alone,” Lucy interrupts, coming out of the bathroom with just a towel wrapped around her body. “I know her crush is visible from space but it’s not a reason to tease her about it.”
Kara sputters and stammers incoherently as Lucy crosses the room and drops a kiss on Alex’s lips before disappearing in their bedroom.
“I do not … I’m not … it’s not … I’m … Whaaaat?”
“Your eloquence is … impressive,” Alex sasses, eyebrow up in a sarcastic call-out.
“I don’t have … it’s not a crush,” Kara eventually manages to say, not sounding very convincing.
“Sure it’s not,” Alex laughs, picking up her book from the coffee table. “Have fun babysitting, Kara. Let us know about that non-crush of yours when you come back.”
Kara wants to protest but then her phone chimes with a text and it’s from Cat.
The smile that graces her lips is so impossibly soft and sweet, Alex rolls her eyes and mutters something about Kara being whipped.
Kara doesn’t hear her, she’s too busy tying an answer.
“Hi buddy!” Kara greets the little boy with a smile as she steps into Cat’s penthouse. “Have you behaved yourself while I was gone?”
Carter runs to her and raises his arms for Kara to pick him up, so Kara does. He smells like kid’s shampoo and her smile widen when he burrow his nose against her shoulder.
“I missed you,” Carter mumbles, making Kara’s heart flutter with love and affection. “Don’t go again.”
Kara laughs and hugs Carter, bringing him back to the living room as she explains “Aww, but I had to go, my mom was missing me too. It was only gone a month and she was as happy to see me as you are now.”
“Did she hug you, too?” Carter asks, not letting Kara put him down.
“She did!” Kara says and the little boy looks a little lost, almost sad, so Kara rushes to add “She’s a grown up though, she doesn’t give as good hugs as you do. Your hugs are the very best!”
“You should stop spoiling him, you know?” Cat’s voice echoes from a little further in the penthouse and it takes a minute before she steps into view. Kara’s heart skips a beat at the sigh of her.
She’s wearing a strapless, deep-blue cocktail dress that hugs all her lines and her curves in every right ways and her hair is a little longer now, brushing her naked shoulders with every moves she makes. She fixing a pair of silver earing that matches her necklace and her smile is wide and soft when her eyes meet Kara’s.
“Hello Kara,” She breathes, the name rolling of her tongue. “I’m happy to see you again.”
“What, no hug? Pfff,” Kara manages to joke, making Carter giggle against her shoulder.
Cat rolls her eyes but her smile doesn’t waver.
“He has already had a bath, there was some chocolate incident this afternoon …” Cat explains, moving forward to cross the living room. “Dinner’s in the oven and I should be back a little after one, is that alright with you?”
Kara nods and tries to put down Carter again but he’s clinging to her like a koala, so she keeps him in her arms.
“No problem, enjoy your evening,” Kara replies with a smile.
She feels that familiar twinge of longing and jealousy in her stomach but she’s used to it. She knows Cat Grant is out of her league but every time she sees the CEO getting ready for an evening out, she feels it hurt a little.
“Kara, dinosaurs!” Carter suddenly comes alive in her arms and she puts him down on the floor.
“Whoa buddy, easy. I still can’t read your mind, you need to speak in sentences,” Kara laughs and Carter grabs her hand.
“I got new dinosaurs, come see!”
Kara throws one last glance at Cat, who waves her away with a soft smile, before she follows the little boy to his bedroom.
“How did it go?” Cat asks, stepping into the living room with her heels in one hand and her phone in the other.
Kara looks up from her book and smiles. “I struggled a little to put him to bed, he kept saying he didn’t want me to go again, but after a two stories, he was fast asleep. Otherwise, he was a perfect gentleman, like always.”She gets up and stretches, hiding a yawn behind the back of her hand.
“How was your time away with your family? You look good,” Cat says and Kara blushes a little.
“It was good! I spent my time sleeping, eating, reading and surfing. Coming back is a little weird, but I’m really happy to see Carter.” Kara explains, moving around to gather her belongings.
“You surf?” Cat sounds a little impressed. Kara nods and brings up her phone to show her a picture.
“Alex wanted to try her new camera, so here’s some proof,” Kara says, letting Cat have a look at the few pictures that show her riding a wave.
“Not bad,” Cat praises and she drops her heels next to the couch before moving to the liquor cabinet. “Do you want something to drink?”
“No thank you, I should probably go,” Kara shakes her head. “I have a game coming up tomorrow, I need all the sleep I can take.”
“Game?” Cat frowns, pouring herself a glass of whiskey.
“Soccer, Miss Grant. I’m the captain of the NCU all girl team …” Kara explains, not missing the glint of interest that sparkles in Cat’s hazel eyes. “You and Carter are welcome to come and cheer on us, if you want.”To her surprise, Cat jumps on the invitation “We would like that, yes, very much so. Text me the time and the address?”
“Sure thing,” Kara nods and she steps away toward the exit. “Good night Miss Grant.”
“Good night, Kara. Thank you for tonight,” Cat replies, softly.
“Well damn Kara, she’s hot!” Lucy whistles, eying Cat as she sits in the bleachers, Carter on her lap.
“Stop ogling!” Kara warns, through her gritted teeth.
She waves at Cat and waits for her to tell Carter where to look before waiving again. The little boy gives her a wide smile and two thumbs up.
“Awwww that boy is so cute!” Lena comes trotting to them. “I’m guessing this is Carter and the woman holding him is the infamous Cat Grant, Kara’s big crush?”
“I hate you,” Kara groans, hiding her blush in between her hands.
“Nah, you don’t. Now, where’s your sister? Coach Henshaw is looking for her,” Lena laughs, efficiently distracting Kara.
“She’s over there, I think she’s talking to Sam,” Kara waves in the general direction of her sister, who seems to be engrossed in a deep conversation with their new attacker. “I’m just going to go say hi, I’ll be right back.”
“Sure,” Lucy and Lena say at once, a knowing smirk showing on their lips.
“Shut up,” Kara groans before trotting up to Cat and Carter.
“Hi buddy! Hello Miss Grant! Thanks for coming,” Kara greets them with a smile, fidgeting a little with the hem of her white and blue jersey.
“You look very sporty, in this outfit,” Cat says with a mocking smirk but Kara notices she keeps glancing at her bare legs and exposed arms. Instinctively, she flexes them and watches as Cat swallows, hard.
“Go win!” Carter cheers and Kara laughs, leaning forward to drop a kiss on his forehead.
“Thanks buddy! See you!” Kara jogs away, back to Lena and Lucy and the way they knowingly waggle their eyebrows at her.
Her phone goes off in the middle of the night and Kara jolts awake, her eyes wide and her breath laboured.
Her first reflex is to stretch but her muscles burn in protest. She’s still so sore, recovering from the few unfair tackles she had to endure during the game. She eventually reaches for her phones and sees that Cat’s calling, at 3am on a Sunday.
“Miss Grant? Is everything alright?” Kara says, pressing the phone against her ear.
“Kara! I didn’t know who … else to call, I’m … sorry …” Cat sounds panicked and breathless and there’s only one thing that would cause such a reaction from her. Kara jumps out of her bed and starts dressing up.
“Take a deep breath, Miss Grant. Now,” Kara commands and Cat does as she said. Kara waits another handful of second before asking “What’s wrong?”A strangled sob echoes in the line before Cat comes through “I’m in the hospital, Carter started throwing up a few hours ago, he’s burning hot with fever and he has trouble breathing … I …. I didn’t know who else to … I’m sorry …”
“Where are you? Which hospital?” Kara asks, grabbing her car keys and her leather jacket before exiting her room. She’s as quiet as she can when she leaves the apartment she shares with her sister and Lucy.
Cat gives her the hospital’s name and floor.
“I’m on my way,” Kara says as she climbs in her car.
Something brushes against her cheek.
It’s soft, warm and very light but Kara feels it anyway. It starts again, stroking her skin with just a little more pressure and so Kara open her eyes, blearily.
She’s curled on the couch in the penthouse, Carter held tightly in her arms, and Cat’s leaning over them.
Kara’s still half asleep but she can see the softness in Cat’s hazel eyes, the tenderness in her smile and the affection in the way she presses her fingers against her skin.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Kara whispers, not wanting to wake up the little boy.
She slowly moves away from the warm body pressed against hers and stands up. Without asking, she gathers Carter in her arms and brings him back to his bed. She pulls the cover on him and drops a kiss on his forehead before returning to the living room.
“I’m sorry, I must have fallen asleep at some point and he decided to join me,” Kara explains, sleepily. She starts moving to gather her belongings. “I did put him to bed earlier in the evening but he kept waking up and asking for more stories …”
“It’s quite alright, Kara, don’t worry,” Cat gently says, waving away Kara’s apology. “He’s still having nightmare about the hospital trip and I’ve been told it’s normal, it will pass.”
Kara nods and rubs her eyes, trying to keep herself awake. She’s spreading herself thin lately, in between her classes, sports and the babysitting, not to mention trying to reign over her unrequited growing feelings for Cat.
“You should stay. You’re exhausted,” Cat says, stepping closer to Kara.
They rarely touch and Kara thinks Cat doesn’t like to be touched by anyone who’s not Carter. There has been a few times, like after the soccer game or at the hospital, where Cat had carelessly grabbed Kara’s arm or hand but it had been in the heat of some strong emotion.
“Thank you, but I’ll be fine. I’m not too far away,” Kara shakes her head no.
She stifles a yawn and then moves toward the door.
“Please, stay,” Cat asks again, her voice soft and almost shy. “There’s a guest room for you, it’s safer than for you to drive back to the other side of National City in your state of exhaustion.”
Kara has to admit, it sounds very tempting.
She’s tired to the bones and she knows it would take her too long to drive back, she wouldn’t get much sleep before she needs to get back up to go to her classes.
“You might be right,” Kara sighs and Cat chuckles lightly. “Alright, thank you,”
Cat doesn’t say anything, simply gesturing for Kara to follow her to the guest room.
“Alright, you have to tell her,” Alex says, closing her book with too much force. “This has been going on for almost six months now, you have to say something!”
Kara looks up from her bowl of cereals and frowns, looking lost.
“You know what I’m talking about, don’t play dumb with me,” Alex insists and this time, Lucy doesn’t swoop in to take Kara’s defense. The younger Lane, sat down next to her girlfriend, looks a little hesitant.
“Your sister has a point,” Lucy eventually sighs. “You’ve been pining for Cat ever since you’ve met her, it’s not exactly healthy …”
“Not you too,” Kara groans, putting more cereals in her mouth and avoiding looking in the general direction of her sister.
“Come on. You’ve been really sad lately, it’s like you’re nothing but the shadow of yourself and the only times we get to have you back is when you talk with Carter on the phone,” Alex says and despite the cutting edge in her voice, Kara knows it’s because her sister is worried about her.
“That’s not …”
Alex cuts her off before she can finish her sentence. “It’s the truth and you know it. Lena’s worried about you too, even though she doesn’t want to be the one talking to you about it.”Kara can’t help the feeling of betrayal that creeps into her heart. “Don’t blame Lena, we all know you’ve been neglecting soccer, the team, you barely manage to stay afloat with your classes …”
“Alex,” Lucy calls out, throwing a meaningful glare at her girlfriend.
“You’re depressed and I don’t like it,” Alex finishes, crossing her arms over her chest. The look in her eyes is full of worry and sadness, something like determination too. “Either you tell her about your feeling or you quit, but you can’t go on like this.”
After that, Kara burst in tears.
“You quit?” Cat asks, disbelief and hurt clear in her voice. She looks a little angry, Kara notices.
“I do, yes. I’m really sorry,” Kara amends, not meeting Cat’s eyes.
She couldn’t bring herself to talk about her feelings, too terrified it would cause Cat to take her distance and preventing her from seeing Carter anymore. Instead, she did as Alex asked and handed over her resignation letter. She’s heartbroken and feeling sick in her stomach but she tries to trust the voice in her head that says it’s for the best.
“Why?” Cat asks, her hands still holding Kara’s resignation letter. “Is it something I’ve done? Something Carter’s done?”
“Oh no, Miss Grant, please don’t think that. Ever,” Kara retorts, sharply looking up to meet Cat’s eyes this time, because she’s desperate for Cat to know it’s not their fault. “Carter is nothing but an angel and you’ve never said anything or done anything that made me feel uncomfortable or anything …”
“Then why are you quitting?” Cat asks again, a little louder this time.
“I’m …” Kara trails off, shaking her head. She can’t tell the truth, so she gives another form of the truth. “I’m behind in my classes and in my sport activities. I need to focus back on my Master and on the championship …”
Kara can tell Cat doesn’t believe her.
“That’s not it,” Cat counters, standing up from the couch and stepping closer to Kara, who takes a step back.
“Please, don’t,” Kara whispers, unable to stand being too close to Cat anymore. She’s nothing but agony, knowing she could never have Cat that way, and being too close only makes things worse.
“Kara,” Cat says, a little breathlessly. She steps forward again and invades Kara’s space, smelling like sandalwood and spices. It’s a little dizzying. “Why are you leaving?”
“I can’t …” Kara shakes her head again. Her already too fragile will is fading under Cat’s hazel eyes, melting like ice under the sunlight. “I can’t tell you that. Please, just let it go.”
“No,” Cat retorts, stepping closer again. She’s inches away now and Kara can’t think of nothing else but Cat. The tan on her skin, the hints of peach shampoo that waft everytime her hair moves, the sandalwood and spicy perfume, the golden freckles in her ever so green eyes, the faintest pink lipstick on her lips … She’s everywhere, unavoidable, unattainable.
Cat’s watching her with an unwavering look that makes Kara crumble and cave.
“I think I’m in love with you,” Kara breathes, the words escaping her lips before she can catch them back. She closes her eyes, knowing it’s too late, and finishes “And I’m terrified you won’t let me see Carter anymore, now that I’ve told you.”
For a moment, nothing happens. Cat doesn’t say anything so Kara keeps her eyes closed. She can’t bring herself to face the look of disgust or pity that’s probably etched on Cat’s features.
Soft lips suddenly land on hers, warm and a little inquisitive, demanding. Kara’s heart stops in her chest before it starts again, frantic and ecstatic. She answers the kiss without hesitating, drinking in the feeling of Cat’s mouth against her, tasting the notes of wine and chocolate and already learning the shape of Cat’s lips.
“Oh, you silly girl,” Cat whispers as she pulls back just a little. Kara opens her eyes, breathless and stunned. “I have dreamed of doing this since the moment I met you.”
Kara stares, unable to speak.
“You were standing in the coffee aisle of the supermarket and Carter called for you, asking you not to go,” Cat explains, dropping a kiss at the corners of Kara’s mouth. “You turned back and I just, I knew.”
Kara blinks, recalling that day in the supermarket, the way Carter had whispered something into his mother’s ear, the hopeful look he’d thrown his way afterward.
“You never … why didn’t you say anything?” Kara asks, hesitantly reaching a hand to brush away a few strands of Cat’s hair. Cat tilted her head into Kara’s palm.
“I’ve been such a coward, Kara. It’s ridiculous, truly,” Cat laughs a little. “I didn’t know how to keep you close without … so I asked you to be Carter’s babysitter. I started to go to all of my company’s events, event though I never did in the past. It was just an excuse to see you.”
Kara arches an amused brow. “That’s … quite an elaborated stratagem, really.”
“Tell me about it,” Cat laughs again, a little louder this time. “My favorite moment though, was when I got to steal a few minutes with you at the end of my night, before you left. I’ve always hated letting you go,” Cat says, looking a little sad.
“Why didn’t you say so? I hated leaving too,” Kara admits, leaning forward to kiss Cat again.
This time, she takes her time to truly explore the valleys of Cat’s lips, to discern the red wine from the strong chocolate and to tease with her tongue just enough to leave Cat breathless when she pulls back. Cat’s eyes are a little wide and unfocused after that.
“I … you’re so young and I’m … older,” Cat replies, suddenly looking very unsure, almost small. “I’m a business woman, a CEO, I have a media empire and a son … I also figured you probably had … someone in your life, someone younger. I didn’t think I had any chance at all.”
When Kara kisses Cat this time, it’s passionate and furious, full of passion and love. She’s not hiding anymore, not when she now knows she can have it all. It escalates to an open-mouthed kiss that leave them a little unsteady when they stop, all laboured breath and glazed eyes.
“Please, don’t go,” Cat asks, raising a hand to caress Kara’s cheek, pleading with her eyes.
“Oh no, I’m not going anywhere,” Kara smirks, eyes still a little hooded but her voice sure and strong.
Cat smiles in return and tugs Kara along to her bedroom.
“Where are you?” Alex demands, sounding very worried.
“Morning sis’,” Kara yawns in her phone, searching for a clock to see the time.
“It’s 2pm, not morning anymore,” Alex retorts. “Where have you been?”
Kara sits up in the bed and notices it’s not hers. She also realises she’s not wearing anything. Memories of last night flash in front of her eyes and she smiles, lazily so.
“Well …. I followed your advice and I went to see Cat to quit,” Kara replies, letting herself fall back into the pillow.
Alex doesn’t say anything for a while and then Lucy’s voice comes through.
“Since you didn’t even bother to send a text saying you weren’t coming back … Are we to assume you never left?”
“I never left, no. I … spent the night,” Kara giggles, feeling a little punch drunk with love.
“You go girl!” Lucy cheers, sounding genuinely happy. “Now, it’s all good and well but we do have a game in like one hour, and the team’s asking for their captain …”
“Oh crap!” Kara swears, scrambling up from the bed and looking for her clothes.
“Oh Kara, bring Cat and Carter along, it’s about time you properly introduce us,” Lucy says before hanging up.
Kara finds her underwears and her jeans and she’s closing the button of it when the door opens and Carter all but barges in, barrelling into her legs with a happy shout. “Karaaaaa!”
“Hi buddy!” Kara greets him, picking him up and holding it in her arms, despite the fact she still has to put on a shirt. “I thought you were with your father this weekend?”
“Mom come pick me up,” Carter shrugs. “Dad’s busy.”
Kara sighs and kisses the little boy on his forehead, not correcting him this time.
“Good morning Kara,” Cat says as she enters the room, holding a shirt in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other one.
“Oh my god, coffee, yes!” Kara perks up at the sight, it makes Cat laugh. “Also, as my sister so eloquently said, it’s not morning anymore and I am very, very, very late. I have a game in one hour …”
Cat looks a little dejected at this, so Kara steps forward and kisses her. It’s soft and tender, she still has Carter in her arms but it’s deep nonetheless.
“Wanna come with me? We could … go have dinner together afterward?” Kara suggests, eyes on Cat. “Also, my sister and her girlfriend would like to meet you.”
Cat’s eyes flash with fear but Carter’s already cheering, loudly “Yes! Soccer game and then spaghettis!”
It makes both women laugh with affection.
“You’re dirty,” Carter points out at all the grass and mud stains on Kara’s soccer uniform, scrunching his nose.
“It happens yes,” Kara laughs and kisses him on the forehead before claiming a kiss from Cat, who happily gives her and then scrunches her nose as well. “Alright, I can see you both have sensitive nose, I’m going to hit the shower. I’ll be back in a few.”
“Spaghettis!” Carter shouts after her, earning a laugh.
“You must be Carter,” says a woman with short brown hair as she steps closer. She’s also wearing a soccer uniform but it’s clean. She extends a hand to the little boy, who eyes her curiously “I’m Alex Danvers, Kara’s older sister. I’m the one calling her silly girl all the time.”
That does it, Carter instantly takes to her and shakes her hand. “Do you like dinosaurs too?”
“I do!” Alex cheers, a smile on her face as she looks up to Cat. “Speaking of it, I have something for you.”
She pulls of a stuffed dinosaurs from behind her back and Carter cheers, loudly.
“Very nice to meet you Miss Grant, I’ve heard a lot about you,” Alex eventually focuses on Cat, who looks a lot less comfortable than her son. “Don’t worry, I’m not here to give you a shovel talk or anything like that. I just wanted to say thank you.”
“For what?” Cat asks, a little confused.
“You could have let her quit, instead of making her tell the truth,” Alex explains, a soft smile on her lips. “She’s been … running away from good things a lot in her life and it was killing me to see her so miserable lately. I’m glad you’re in it with her.”
“Oh,” Cat breathes, a little taken aback by Alex’s speech.
“Also, if you ever hurt her …”
“Alex!”
Another soccer player jogs down to them, looking at Alex with a meaningful glare. “We said no shovel talk!”
“But, I’m the big sister it’s my …” Alex starts to protest, looking a little chastised.
“No,” The woman orders, before turning to the mother and son. “Sorry about that. I’m Lucy Lane, Alex’s girlfriend and Kara’s best friend.”
“Hello,” Carter says, looking up from his stuffed dinosaur. “You’re very pretty.”
Lucy is awed and Alex nods approvingly, a soft smile on her face.
“Did Alex say something?” Kara asks, a hand trailing down Cat’s naked waist.
“She tried, I think, but Lucy came and shut her down,” Cat giggles, the sound echoing in the room like a sweet melody.
“I knew she’d try,” Kara shakes her head and drops a kiss against Cat’s shoulder. “She’s always been overly protective.”
“She loves you, I can only respect that,” Cat whispers before closing her hands around Kara’s face to pull her in for a kiss. “Will you stay?”
“I don’t know,” Kara says feigning to think about it. “Carter’s bed looks really comfy, I might be better off there …”
“Silly girl,” Cat laughs and then breathlessly kisses Kara, tugging her down in the bed with her.

I Was Never Good at Waiting (Sugawara X Reader) Chapter 3
Tumblr media
- It was your last year in highschool, everything had been going smoothly until you got assigned the new teacher. Sugawara Koushi was handsome, maybe too handsome for his own good. Be he wasn't flirting with you right, teachers shouldn't do that....I guess we will see where this year goes.
Word Count - 3,163
----
Sunlight peeked through your blinds as the soft vibrations from your phone woke you from your dreams. Opening one eye you turned to look at the digital clock on your desk next to your bed. It was 6:00 a.m, time for you to get ready for the day. Lifting your legs into the air you rotated side to side, gathering enough momentum for you to roll yourself off the bed.
Soft padded footsteps echoed through the silent house as you meandered to the bathroom. You ran your hand over the wall a few times, finally hitting the light switch. The lights flickered on, your eyes burning at the sudden shift in brightness. You rubbed circles on them with your palms, fuzzy white dots filling your vision.
After the blurry vision dissipated you took a look at your groggy state. Most of the hair that had been inside of your bun had found it's way out, standing up in various directions. The underneath of your eyes were sunken and dark, but this was normal. Tired was just another word to describe your features at this point. Taking out your hair tie you combed through your nest like hair while turning on the shower, attempting to guide the temperature to a desirable position.
Stripping yourself of your nightly bedwear, you stepped inside and pulled the door closed. You recoiled as the cold water hit your back, cursing as you adjusted the temperature once again. Your morning showers were quick, only for the purpose of taming your bedhead, you showered at night for cleanliness. You ran through your morning shower cycle quickly before shutting off the water. You felt around for your towel, grabbing at nothing. You pulled open the shower door, glaring at the empty towel rod. You look in a deep breath, sprinting out of the warm bathroom and into the cold hallway. You b-lined for the linen closet, practically ripping it off it's hinges as you pulled something warm and fuzzy out of the dark hole in the wall.
After your refreshing, brisk morning run you towel dried you and your wet feet prints. You peaked out of the bathroom again, looking at the bright red numbers on your clock, 6:15.
Next you brushed your hair, teeth, and dressed yourself for class. Today’s dress was for the most part what you wore every day. A short sleeved light blue button up, a faded red tie (the same one you had received on your first day of first year), your tan plaid pleated shirt, black knee high socks, and to top it off the one thing you could change as you pleased. Most days you opted for the light cream colored sweater vest under your white school jacket, but today felt like a cream cardigan kind of day instead. Most likely because the news reports called for a rainy day today, but also because you wanted to mix it up.
Your makeup was easy to put on, your hair was just as simple. You had always liked leaving it down but always brought a ponytail just in case. The watch ticking away on your wrist read 6:45, your morning was passing by fast. You gathered your bag and coat before walking downstairs and laying them on the couch.
Pulling open the fridge doors you pulled out everything you had prepped the night before, all you really had to do was assemble it in your lunch box and you could leave for school. Once you finished that you put it all away and placed your lunch in your bag before pulling on your coat and situating your bag on your shoulder. Walking out the door you locked it behind you and started your walk to school.
Your trip was always the longest part of your day, you had chosen Sejoh because of the impact it had on your moms adolescent life, sure it was out of the way. But that's what legs and trains were for right?
It took you approximately an hour and fifteen minutes to get to the school from your house. In that time you would walk fifteen minutes to the train station, take two different trains to the station by the school, and walk another ten minutes to the actual school. As long as you were on time, the distance didn’t matter.
You liked to use the time for writing, mostly songs. It was a hobby only your friends knew about, they also were the only two who knew about the band you had joined last year. It was never an end game option for you, no career would ever come out of the group of ragtag college students who had formed the group years ago. But they were nice enough to let you sing for them when the original member had graduated and moved on from the dream. As long as you could come up with songs, and of course make the time for practice, well they liked having you around.
You would love to tell the volleyball club about what you did during your weekends away from the club and schoolwork. You probably would have if it wasn’t for the looming threat of every single shitty dive bar you performed at finding out that you indeed were seventeen (going on eighteen, that was important), and in fact not twenty one. But whatever, you were having fun.
You walked past the front gates and into the lockers at around 8:10, twenty minutes before classes would start. Siding on your slippers you placed your practice gear and outside shoes inside your locker. Today would be your first practice back, it was exciting to say the least.
“Hey, we haven't talked in awhile.” A sweet voice turned your attention away from your thoughts.
“Yoshiki, hi.” You looked the boy over in surprise, the morning fog still leaving your brain.
“So your homeroom teacher this year is Sugawara-sensei huh? He comes to my class after lunch for science. He seems nice, he made some really bad science jokes yesterday when he introduced himself.” Yoshiki laughed as he remembered the not so funny pun. It reminded you both of simpler, less uncomfortable times you both shared so long ago.
“I wish I could have heard them.” You giggled, mostly with Yoshiki and less at the statement. I felt nice to take in the easy feeling of being together again, even if it was fleeting. “He was pretty straightforward with the homeroom class. Probably because Yua wouldn’t shut up.”You walked with him down the hallway, his pace matching with yours as you talked.
“I could tell you some of them over lunch.” He paused as you reached your classroom door, his foot digging into the tile. “Unless things are still weird between us?” He couldn’t meet your eyes, his heart pounding in his chest. You had rejected him once, could twice be just as bad?
“Sure, that would be great. Since we ruled out the potentially dating option, all that's left is to go back to being friends again.” You let out an out of place laugh, your enthusiasm forced. You felt awkward, your attempt at mending the relationship uncomfortable to your own ears.
He on the other hand smiled, it seemed to be just the words he was hoping for. He gave you a brief wave before leaving for his own classroom.
He was right, things were still weird between you. But that's what happens when you fall in love for the first time, try to go on a date, and run away from said date leaving him alone, and then proceed to ignore his calls all winter break. The least you could be was give him a lunch period to feel things out.
You made your way into the classroom, greeting a few students before setting your things down at your desk. Yua and Hiroto were already sitting at their desks when you slid into your seat next to them.
“Good morning F/N-chan.” They greeted, the unity of their tone made you giggle.
“No coffee this morning?” Hiroto questioned as he looked at your usually occupied hand.
“I’m gonna try and quit drinking it so much, save some extra money...” You frowned already painfully aware of the lack of caffeination.
“You're like an addict!” Yua laughed, “I give you a week tops before you crash.”
“Thanks for the support!” You chirped, pinching her exposed arm. You shook your head as she hissed at the pain, the morning bell drowning out her cursing.
Sugawara walked in on cue holding a mug of coffee and a black binder. “Good Morning class.” He smiled as he set down the items on his desk.
“You look nice today Sugawara-sensei!”A voice spoke from somewhere behind you. You needn't look behind you, the high pitched tone was easy to pick out.
“Thank you.” He smoothed out his suit jacket, nodding in appreciation. His eyes scanned the room before landing on you. “L/N-san, will you come up and take roll for me please?” He gave you a sweet smile, wiggling the board your way.
“Yes sensei.” You moved your chair back and made your way up to the front of the room. He stood on the other side of his desk, reaching across to take the clipboard and pen from his hands.
“This one is you.” He pointed to your name and smiled sweetly,“Don’t forget this time ok?”
The class laughed at his teasing remark as you slid the pen out of his hand.
“Yes, sensei.” You mocked him in your head as you walked to the middle of the room looking around the class as you checked off the names. “Maybe if you didn’t walk into class trying to fluster me I wouldn’t have such a hard time functioning.” You finished and handed the board back to him, giving him a forced smile.
“Thank you, you can go sit down now.” He glanced up from his syllabus before sliding it out of your hand.
Taking your seat again he began the homeroom meeting for the day. It was the same information, just saying what events the school had going on, what the menu was for the day, and if any school deadlines were coming up. Then he broke the class up for independent study as he pulled students to the front for their daily college discussion. Next week this would become a weekly discussion as homeroom would turn into a study hall period for students to get help on school work.
You were waiting for your turn as the bell rang signaling for the classroom switches. You were a bit sad that you had been the only one left out for the day's discussions, maybe more so that you couldn’t talk to Sugawara.
Everyone waved a goodbye to Sugawara as he exited the classroom and your next teacher settled into the next subject. Class passed by as usual, your attention fading in and out as you watched out the window. The grey storm clouds had started to roll in as the sky darkened. The sun had permanently tucked behind the clouds around noon, the chill of threatening rain permeating the window next to you.
Before long the bell rang and students made for the cafeteria. As the crowd dispersed, Yoshiki peaked his head in at you and your group of friends.
“Hey, are you eating in here today?” He made his way over to your desk holding his own bento box.
“Yeah, you can stay with us if you want.” You beamed as he pulled a chair over to your desk and set his lunch down. It was cutely wrapped, the cloth around it was bordered with brightly colored dinosaurs, as he opened it so were most of the food wrappers.
“It’s my little brother's box I promise, he took my lunch this morning when he left. His cheeks tinted pink as he shook his head back and forth. He placed both hands over the box, covering it from view.
Giggling you placed a hand over his “It’s ok, dinosaurs are pretty cool.” He relaxed into his seat as you opened your own box.
“Oh Sugawara-sensei, do you need the classroom?” Hiroto asked as Sugawara walked over to his office door.
“No.You're fine to stay here, I have a few papers to grade in my office.’’ He paused on you, looking between you and Yoshiki.”L/N-san i’m sorry I missed you for our council time.’’ He rested his hand on the doorknob, squeezing it slightly.
“It’s ok Sugawara- sensei! The class is so big, I don’t know how you could make enough time for all of us in one day.” You waved your hand at the notion and laughed, he had no reason to feel bad. You had all year to college prep, one day wouldn’t set you back.
“I’m free after school if you want to wait in my office? We can run down your requirements before volleyball practice.” He shifted on his feet slightly, Yoshiki’s gaze heavy on him.
You agreed to the offer, thanking him as he disappeared into his office.
“Two days in a row, look at you!” Yua laughed as she slapped your back causing you to choke on your food.
“Yua-chan he’s our teacher!” Hiroto whispered aggressively as he handed you his water bottle.
“I know, it's just funny seeing how flustered she gets.” Yua winked at you, as if her flirtatious actions would justify the burning in your throat.
You passed the lunch period chatting amongst your friends, Yoshiki easing into the conversation as if nothing had ever happened. You were grateful for the new start, happy to have your friend back. As everyone finished their lunches, Yua and Hiroto waved a goodbye. They were on a mission to find the raccoon that lived by the track dumpsters, leftover food in tow. You and Yoshiki were left in the classroom, silence settling around you both.
“So, are you still doing soccer with Hiroto-kun?” You tried to fill the conversational gap, hoping it would disperse the awkward feeling around you two.
“Yeah, but they pretty much benched me. The new first years are really good.” He laughed, sounding sadder than he had planned.
You opened your mouth when the office door clicked  open and Sugawara peaked his head out.
“L/N-san come here please.” He waved a hand at you, disappearing back into his office.
You looked between the open door and Yoshiki before standing up. You turned to speak, Yoshiki already packing up his belongings.
He said a hasty goodbye, leaving before you could get a word in.
You watched as he walked out the door, turning back to the open office.
“Yes Sugawara-senpai?” You pushed the door open a little more before stepping into his office.
It was nicer inside then you had anticipated. He had one large window facing the courtyard, while the other 2 walls adjacent to the door were lined with rows and rows of books. A large dark oak desk sat in the middle of the room, free of clutter and debris. He had pushed a small black sofa under the window, it looked comfy and worn in. Like it held more stories then the actual shelves. But the most notable feature of the room was the abundance of small and large plants placed around the room. Some sat on the windowsill, others were placed between the sections of books on the shelves. The larger plants were tucked into the corners of the room, leaves fanning out over everything nearby. But one particularly pretty pink succulent sat on his desk, perfectly positioned to sit in the ray of sun that shined through the window. It looked like it was basking in the warmth, soaking up all the sun had to offer.
“Can you do me a favor L/N-san?” Sugawara questioned as your eyes stopped roaming. You landed on his hand, reaching out towards you, grasping something out of sight.
You reached out and opened your hands,“Of course Sugawara-senpai.”
He opened his hands to drop a few yen into yours. “I didn’t have time for lunch today, can you go grab me a hot drink from the vending machines by the south gym? You can get yourself something as well if you want. There should be enough money for two.”
“I may be late for class sensei…” You cupped the warm metal, how long had he been holding the coins? They heated the palm of your hand slightly, melding with your own warmth.
”It’s ok, just come in quiet when you come back.” He sat back down, picking up a red pen.
You nodded and smiled before running off towards the south gym doors. You would hurry, maybe if you ran you would make it back before the bell rang.
“Um, what should I get him?” You scanned over the drink options presented to you.“It is flu season, maybe something that will keep him healthy? But he did say he didn’t eat lunch, what's thick. What if he fails me because I got him something gross.” You were shaking your head back and forth, this was becoming much more tasking then it should have ever been. You pushed the green tea button twice, grateful he was kind enough to give you enough money for something as well.
The rain was starting to come down, getting heavier by the minute. You took the two hot drinks and ran for the main entrance, hoping the rain wouldn’t soak your cardigan too much before you made it inside.
It was a short walk back to the classroom, you could hear Sugawara on the other side, he had already started the lesson. Deciding to finish your own green tea in the hallway you emptied the container before heading inside.
You slid the door open just enough to fit inside, attempting to be quiet enough to not distract the classroom. Eyes were all on you as you closed the door and turned around to face your peers. Breathing stopped as they waited for their sensei to reprimand you for being late.
You walked over to Sugawara and handed him the tea before fishing his remaining change out of your cardigan pocket and rushing back to your desk, eyes on the floor as you sat down.
“Thank you L/N-san.”His smile was sweet and gentle as he turned back to the class. “So this diagram differs from the previous in what way?” He continued on with the lesson as everyone's gaze slowly started to leave you.
After a few minutes it seemed as if everyone had lost interest in your tardiness, almost everyone. Two pairs of eyes from the back of the room bore holes into the back of your head for the remainder of class, you didn’t have to turn around to know who they belonged to.

Alright... I see your creativity with these song fics (very good idea btw), so I'll indulge! Can you write a fic of "Sky Full of Song" by Florence and the Machine with Risotto and fem s/o? The song I believe is about a person's personal struggle with committing to things, and they're calling out to the other person to ground them, while the other loves them unconditionally.
Side note: Such a great writer requesting from me?! I’m honored! And nervous lmao. Thank you, I really hope this is good enough *crying emoji*
I noticed I changed the point of view out of the blue, and I apologize, I really have no idea why it happened, but I figured it felt good, somehow? More engaging? Sorry :c
SONG FIC: SKY FULL OF SONG BY FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE; RISOTTO NERO.

The first step to solve a problem is accept it.
(Y/n) knew this long before things got worse. She believed that maybe, if she managed to somehow commit to herself, she would be able to make the rest of things left to do. However, sometimes it’s easier to think about the solution or the plans than act, than make it happen. Because the will to accomplish them doesn’t come easily, or it comes and goes in waves.
At some point, it felt like there was no opportunity she could make all those things she once wanted, all her projects left unfinished; some started, some halfway through the process, some almost finished.
Frustration grew and grew until it exploded in a bunch of negative feelings towards herself, feeling like she was drowning in a cup. Maybe the problem wasn’t so bad or so big, but it was also true that during these blinding moments, one could see smaller problems as big threats.
And that’s why she ended up lying down in the roof of La Squadra's hideout. She wasn’t used to the silence that welcomed her there as she gazed at the stars that shine bright like everything was happiness and good things; she envied them for a moment, wishing she could be one of them or something else that didn’t had so many things to do.
La Squadra’s hideout wasn’t a quiet place, it never was and maybe it will never be; perhaps only in the moment they all stopped working there for any twisted reason. However, thinking about the future felt too overwhelming in the moment, and totally something (Y/n) didn’t needed to worry about at the moment, not with her problem.
Instead, questions and worries started coming; one after the other without mercy. All the things, the reports, the tasks, the social events, the laundry, the dishes to wash; everything that required some of that committing she lacked, and struggled to find, coming to remind her of her shame and pain and sadness but most of all, desperation.
The first step to solve a problem is accept it.
Then, if she knew and accept it what was wrong long before things got like this, why couldn’t she draw a line and start doing it?
If the first step to solve a problem is accept it, and she already accepted it, then where was the resolve to solve it? Wanting to do something is not equal to be able to do it —but for god’s sake, that was such a lame thing to say, more when it was about justifying her lack of productivity. (Y/n) was an assassin, one who knew how to commit to her mission if she wanted to have food at her table, clothes to dress on and a roof above her head; but that was long ago, and it’s been some time since Risotto Nero, her capo and secretly lover for some time now, sent her on a mission. It wasn’t clear if he was aware of her situation or if he was trying to protect her. Thinking wisely, the most possible option was the first, since Risotto had the capacity to distinguish between his relationships and job pretty good— the man had an absolute control over his actions, plans and team.
A control she desired to have.
And speaking of him, and almost like he could read her mind, the door to the roof opened and Risotto's tall and impotent form appeared; his eyes, burgundy and coal; bloody storm and void, glued to her form as soon as they spotted her. He bows softly, silently walking up to her and it’s in that moment when she notices how he’s not using his usual clothes but instead, he’s dressed in black shorts and a t-shirt with his favorite band logo imprinted in the front; realization hits her, then, and she remembers that shirt as their second date, when they attended a concert, that happened around his birthday two years ago —how he smiled so genuinely. As if for a moment they both were normal people, not a pair of assassins working under the most ridiculously powerful famiglia in Italy, almost like they were an important part of society.
“I’ve noticed you’re not doing well lately, (Y/n). What’s wrong?”
Always so direct.
She shifts in her place, trying to find the right words to explain, but finding a storm of ideas and feeling both in her head and heart; Risotto blinks, watching silently and when she’s starting to shift again, he looks away, speaking again so gentle and calm it feels like the strength of his voice is like a careless whisper.
“Don’t worry, I’m not intending to rush you.”
She nods, stopping and looking down.
Her mind wanders, thinking back to her problem, unaware of his eyes fixed in her again, taking in every single hair, every single part of her; the way her eyebrows twitch while she thinks, or the way her lips press together, the way her hands move; how she’s so natural and yet, it still surprises him. He’s amazed by every one of her features and the way she’s so her. He’s aware of his feelings, has been for a while now, and while some of it terrifies him, there’s no opposition, in fact.
Unconditional love. The affirmation in his head that he’s willing to lie and sin for her; to make the impossible. The utter acknowledgment that he’s head over heels for her. And the satisfactory knowledge that she feels the same.
“I need you, Riz. I need your help, please ground me. Teach me how to keep up with my obligations. I need to commit to them or else—“
“Tesoro,” he interrupts kindly, his hand reaching out to her, softly grasping her arm; the warmth feeling his skin transmits her making (Y/n) realize how distressed she is. The way he looks at her, one she only sees when he looks at her. It makes a warm feeling spread through her chest and her muscles relax with the afterglow of the intensity of his love and passion for her.
“You need to forgive yourself.” There’s a sense that maybe, and you assume it for his past, that he may have said this to himself some time ago, or maybe, with the recent losses of the team, maybe he was trying to make YOU stronger than him. Knowing him, there was no way he was forgiving himself for what happened to them. You could almost hear him say “The living must resolve conflicts with the living, not with the dead.”
You look worriedly at him, finding in his eyes the affirmation to your thoughts and inevitably feeling a pang of pain in your chest.
“We need to forgive ourselves.” You whisper and your voice sounds so tiny you almost feel like your words don’t hold strength but Risotto purses his lips together, nodding in the process.
“You’re right. But right now, let me help you; let’s… Heal together.”
You nod, bringing his hand to your mouth to kiss his knuckles and he shifts, wrapping himself around you, adding in a quiet, calm voice that soothes you. “For a long time, I forced myself to work on every mission and report, trying to ignore other things.” He pauses to clear his throat. “What I’m trying to say, (Y/n), is that committing to things and overworking are divided by a small line. Committing means knowing how to make things in time and form; overworking doesn’t respect this. Committing to things is based around the pleasure of being able to go to sleep knowing you have a part of the work done, and aware that you can finish it by tomorrow. However, if there’s a deadline, you commit to it, and work fast but make things right so you can have the satisfaction of going to sleep knowing you did your part. Committing has a correlation with your own dreams or the paycheck at the end of the month, if you want to think about it like that. The keyword to committing is satisfaction and resolve. It’s no easy to find both always, for certain circumstances can make you lose resolve, or straight out kill your interest.”
You listen intently, nodding every now and then even if you know he’s no watching you all the time, but finding comfort in the action.
“In the end, the first step to solve this, is finding motivation —and in the long term, keeping that motivation so you can get more things done, maybe even adding a few interests. In the end tesoro, you and I will make this together.”
You feel your chest tighten as you look from the city and the lights as the cars pass by, blinking back tears as you whisper back. “Thank you, Riz.”
Risotto hums and his voice rumbles through his chest. You lean against him, finally feeling that spark of motivation inside you. “You know, I miss working with you.”
Risotto circles your shoulders with one arm, “We could try and get some paperwork done before going to bed.”
