The Sunshine Court spoilers
I feel like I haven't seen anyone really talk about this specific scene yet but something about it really gets to me like imagine going through hell and back to be the best only to hear that these other guys are enjoying themselves and have, y'know, basic things like autonomy and somehow managed to be nearly as good. Jean starting to realize maybe everything the Ravens did was for nothing and genuinely wanting to know why he had go through all that but the Trojans didn't and is it unfair? did he just waste 3 years of his life? If everything was rewritten could love have coexisted with being the best?

Outside POV is my absolute favorite so seeing Jeremy's reaction to watching the foxes tear through his second in the nation team as if they were toddlers and being in awe of them and jean watching the match on tv being so sure they would lose only to turn the tv off and on and off and back on again because he literally cannot believe what he is seeing is everything I could have wanted and more.
But also the scene with the newscasters at the raven v foxes match nearly broke me because everytime I read that scene I think of the millions of people who watched riko come at neil and andrew protect him in live time and all of the analysis that would have happened in the talk shows and online and the fact that we actually got to see that really puts all of the events of the books into perspective

I just. I’m never going to understand Kevin’s happy ending being that he ends up with Thea
Thea, who shows up after Kevin makes the terrifying decision to announce part of the abuse he suffered on television in a way that for the first time directly implicates his abuser, and is speaking in a way Neil describes as “angry and mocking” about what Kevin just did
Kevin says “If you’re going to believe me, you need to see Jean first” and Thea does not deny needing to be convinced. Meaning the implication is that Thea is fully aware of the extent of abuse the normal Ravens dealt with, and when hearing that her ex who escaped in the middle of the night did so because of a severe injury given to him by a teammate her reaction is to show up and need to be given a reason to believe him, the abuse victim, and she’s clearly angry at him the entire time she’s demanding evidence of his abuse
There also is an implication with how she talks that she is angry Kevin did not tell her these things himself, even though, again, her reaction was to get angry at Kevin and need to be given a reason to believe he actually was abused
And it’s been confirmed that Thea will always view herself as a Raven, the thing Kevin risked his life to escape, and that she views Kevin’s life of abuse as “no harm no foul” because the abuser died and the horrific physical and mental injuries didn’t stop him from playing the sport
I just. How is that a good ending for Kevin? That he escaped an abusive cult and spends the rest of his life with someone still connected to the cult who views the direct abuse he got from the cult leader as basically a wash because he’s still playing the sport and the cult leader is dead now?
I mean just have it be like Allison or Renee where he marries a woman he meets after the books end, someone who represents the future he chose and not the abusive past he had to endure and then escape. I just don’t see how him ending up with someone who thinks the cult he barely escaped from with his life was ultimately not that bad and she’s proud to have been a part of it is in any way happy for him.
It just feels like Kevin is never actually going to be able to escape his past and he’s going to spend his life with someone skeptical of his experiences after spending years with the Foxes and specifically Andrew whose views are “you are never at fault for what other people did to you, you can always move forward, it’s never too late to leave and be happy, there will always be someone who can see what happened to you and believe the best of you and want to support you moving forward”
Why make him a fan of the Trojans, whose culture is the exact opposite of the Ravens, and not at least pair him off with someone there? Have one of the women they play against in that game approach him with compassion like Renee does to Jean? Suggest that she’s happy to support him in any way he needs and then show him calling her a few times in the background of other scenes?
Also the extra content I just
Tumblr media
Kevin keeps an apartment right near the place he was abused his whole life
He has a daughter he forces to play Exy even though she doesn’t want to, that she views it as being forced into a life she never wanted but ultimately it’s fine because she meets their expectations. Like that just sounds like Kevin physically and mentally goes back to the place he was in before and does to his kid some of what was done to him, that he makes his child so miserable she becomes an “emotional nightmare” but it’s written off as fine because she plays well, similar to how Kevin having no choice in life and being treated horrifically was ok because it made him play well

I think my favorite part of TSC is that we get the counterpoint of Jeremy's POV.
Not only because it's funny (it is) or because I love Jeremy (I do), but because it drives home the themes of AFTG in a way that Neil or even Jean's POVs cannot.
With Neil, we get the upperclassmen, but for the most part everyone he interacts with is so steeped in the mafia plot and the ravens, but also just so much abuse that we as the readers get kind of stewed into seeing things from Neil's perspective. It's why we have to remember that Neil is an unreliable narrator. (It's not a bug, it's a feature btw; I love Neil's batshit view of the world)
But with Jeremy, it gets thrown into stark relief that it does not have to be like this. The Trojans practice, and they go home. Exy is not a metaphor to them, or a lifeline, or an obligation; it is an activity. They have lives. They have friends outside of Exy, something Neil does not have.
So, I watch a lot of college gymnastics. I love the sport, but (like all sports), there is the looming specter of abuse. Every year, it seems like another coach is discovered to have abused their athletes. Weight tracking, emotional abuse, physical abuse and intimidation. Its something you weigh when you're a college sports fan, knowing on some level that this thing you enjoy on some level enables this.
And it makes me think of the line in TSC:
“What we don’t understand is how a grown-ass man took a bunch of kids and turned them into monsters for sport.”
Because this is what Neil's POV can't give us. Neil, and Kevin and Jean, the stakes are higher because of the mafia plot, it's true. But SO MANY OTHER ravens were just normal kids who got destroyed so some adults could make money and have a little bit of glory.
And, to be clear, this isn't a place to be like “and this is why I don't watch sports” because it's EVERYWHERE. In music, TV, school theater and choir- anywhere there is a power dynamic, there is the potential for abuse.
And by providing the counterpoint from the Trojans, it becomes even more apparent how unnecessary it all is.

thinking about mafia!soap ):
he's been working all day kooked-up with his computer as he types away on a project for Price. some trojan horse virus that he wants to slip into some politicians computer, something that should be simple and easy for a man of his talents, and yet he finds himself struggling anyway.
the only thing that gets him through his long day is you. you've been working a long and grueling shift and sending him texts about it whenever you have the chance to. the man could listen to you ramble all day, even through his phone. it's no surprise that you get off of work before him as you were lucky enough to work the day shift, and your constant texts begging him to come home has him tempted to toss his work aside and worry about it the next day. but that's something he can't afford.
You: babyyyyyyy come homeeeeeee
Johnny <3: can't come home quite yet, babe.
You: but i miss you ):
Johnny <3: i know, but you've gotta be patient. i'll be home as soon as i'm done here
silence. complete and utter radio silence. it's gotten to the point where Soap is checking his phone every few minutes or so just to see if he's missed a message, and yet there's nothing. worried he's upset you by his simple text, he sends you another one, one that doesn't give him a response either. it eats at his mind for a good thirty minutes. there's the code in front of him, the countless lines and lines of it, and then there's his stupid fucking phone that wont buzz as much no matter how much he'd like it to.
until it does. and not in a simple text, but a call with your name and picture popping up on his screen. immediately he answers it and raises the phone to his ear, and he prays he hasn't upset you by staying late at work again.
"babe, everything alr-"
"johnny..."
you all but moan his name, and it sounds so temptingly sweet rolling off of your tongue like it always does. but there's something more to it than that. no, he can hear your breathy sighs and that needy strain in your tone. he swears that if he focuses hard enough, there's more than just microphone static vibrating through the speaker.
"i'm trying to be patient but i... fuck, i miss you so much baby. tell me you'll be home soon?" you ask breathlessly.
as you speak, Soap imagines the show you're putting on. bare naked, sprawled out on his side of the bed to breathe in the scent of him while you touch yourself. he can hear the faint buzzing of your vibrator teasing away at your clit, touching you in all the ways that he should be touching you right now. and maybe you're trying to stuff your fingers inside of your aching cunt where his cock should be, where he should be. at home, in bed with you, fucking you into the mattress until you've both forgotten your shitty days at work.
"i'm headed home right now, doll."
his work can wait until tomorrow. he's got more important matters to tend to.

Niel Josten barging in Los Angeles, plucking Jean off from the Trojans, having a Thai dinner date while conspiring with his Mafia boss uncle against the Moreau family, gaslighting the fbi into believing him and Jean are best buddies and played dress up during his time in Evermore, being there for Jean upon hearing about his sister and then transporting him back while also having arranged a side quest to dispose off the piece of trash namely Grayson is so babygirl of him . I missed this orange cutie patootie so much. <333

It's so funny seeing the Trojans response to learning more and more about Evermore and the Ravens as outsiders with zero knowledge about the mafia involvement because they're all just like "yeah that's definitely just cult?? Are they okay over there??" Because it's such a normal response from normal people. While the Foxes (being all from broken homes with trauma) and knowing about the mafia involvement are like "yeah that tracks, they're still crazy but makes sense".

(Full TSC spoilers, as in to the end of the book) The contrast of Jeremy’s biggest concern is caring for his team, making sure his queer inner circle are healthy, okay, having fun and passing classes vs. Jeans biggest concern is the literal mafia debt, serious major trauma, PTSD and learning how to live again is just perfect.
It shows really beautifully in Jeremy’s approach to helping Jean. Jeremy seeks to know, to get Jean to open up and admit what happened. And hey it eventually works. But in comparison that never happened with Neil. The foxes knew to not pry and because Neil was able to integrate into the foxes without being an issue like Andrew is that was okay. There was more concessions, understanding and leaving things be.
I do wish for many reasons Jean stayed with the foxes if only because they fundamentally get it. But at the same time no it wouldn’t work, they’re pack bonded and Jean sees them as something he can’t be apart of.
A quote that stuck with me:
“That’s not fair,” Jeremy said, and when Jean opened his mouth to argue, added, “to you or us. For someone who seems so sure of what he deserves, you don’t seem to give any thought to what anyone else does. You’re forcing us to hurt you without giving us any say in the matter.”
And yeah that’s why it’s important to shove Jean more than one might with Neil or Andrew. Andrew is violently firm with his boundaries, Neil says he’s fine when he’s not but he can cope under high stress environments and has worked on accepting help. Even if that help is calling Andrew, running and exercise (fun fact exercise is a great ptsd trigger management tactic, peak the anxiety to bring it down through physical activity).
Jean doesn’t have boundaries, will not speak up at any point when something upsets him, puts himself in harms way constantly because he doesn’t have any self worth. Understandable given what he’s been through. And for Jeremy to feel he can help he seeks to know to understand - which isnt helpful! And that’s acknowledged at the end of the book!!! (Nora I love you)
Jeremy wants to put it into context, he wants so desperately to be told what’s going on, why Jean has this reactions, that it’s important to talk. But for someone who’s learned to stop biting back, to be quiet to have no harm come to them? That’s not going to happen easily. Jean does give ground and I really appreciate seeing him set boundaries too gosh. Him saying what he will and will not talk about, reaffirming that again and again throughout the book is perfect. And for Jeremy, Cat and Lalia to respect those boundaries too, or mostly. There are points when I think they shove a bit much but this book isn’t about perfect responses. It’s a queer household taking in an extremely traumatised person and learning how to support him while he learns how to exist.
Oh and also the power imbalance that exists accidentally by Jean not having context for what Jeremy, Cat and Lalia have been through too! He’s picked up there’s something but he’s always the one being pushed to talk about things, but he knows it’s not appropriate to pry about those things with them. It’s neat.
The coaches responses are interesting too. From the shoving Jean towards the water (I wanted to punch them omg /lh), to civil conversations, to showing Jean a Raven thing and just not understanding his response.
It’s nice to see how much the Trojan’s don’t understand, they don’t know how to respond, they have no idea what’s sensitive and what’s not. We love the foxes for how understanding they are and seeing a contrast of a privileged team is awesome to see.
I’m excited to see Jean and Bee’s sessions. Adore the book and Jean’s unhinged out of pocket self<3

seeing how mostly normal, mostly well adjusted people react to the reality of the aftg universe is just such a goddamn gift
like the foxes truly just rolled with the punches. blood pouring out of Neil’s locker? sure. Neil actually has auburn hair and blue eyes? welp. what are you gonna do. still hot. Kevin has mafia ties? I guess that’s fine, he can stay. trying to fight the literal fbi to get your friend back? all in a normal day.
then we finally get to see from the Trojans some absolute GEMS.
“literally the most awkward way you could’ve worded it” at the way kevin says things as facts but really just sound like weird dialogue out of a b-movie thriller sometimes
Jean’s teammates being absolutely outwardly thrown by the scars on his body, screaming “what the fuck”
The “you know that’s not okay, or normal right”s
I love seeing the new perspective on the universe we’ve accepted as truth in these books
We live with the foxes for three books and they have all been so beaten down and lived in dark worlds that they’ve all learned to roll with the punches and punch back. Learning the new layer of how fucked up the world can be isn’t shocking to them, just an adjustment
The Trojans are gonna ask why you need to throw that punch or tell you that you shouldn’t have to take a punch either. And it’s not really a cult, right? No one could turn these kids into monsters for a sport, could they? I can only imagine what’s going to happen when they learn that jean was literally sold to a separate mafia family to pay off his own mafia family’s debts. that he was given to Riko like a pet.
The foxes have always watched the shadows across the room and waited for the ways they’ll change shape.
The Trojans are learning that the monsters under the bed are real and closer than they ever thought

Observations from completing the Sunshine Court
Jean Moreau is the saddest girl in the world.
Jeremy is Richard Gansey III and I want more explanation on his backstory. Tell me how his mom sucks NOW!
Nora Your telling me Jeremy was never blonde? I don’t believe it. Your fucking with me
Jean is actually so funny. The drama of his descriptions. Like this man has the longest laundry list of trauma yet a sugary drink is the worst thing to exist ever. That’s very French of him.
Jean did have a crush on Kevin comfirmed (still holding onto blind hope that kerjean could be canon)
I think it’s safe to say the Trojans are the queerest team in the league. Cat and Lila are queens and I love lesbians, Xavier is a king who respects boundaries, Nb rep and polyamory. Nora you’re treating us.
The fact that Jean was so upset about their heights
Idk why sports anime mafia au is the best setting to explore indoctrination stalkholm syndrome and extreme trauma but fuck it where here, we ball, and I’m not okay
I always forget how unhinged Neil is and seeing him from an outside perspective did not help
Neil’s also a king who respects boundaries but like in an unhinged way
I too would put a hit out on a rapist if I had the means
Jean had a little sister 🥺 I will never recover from this knowledge
And We thought Neil had compartmentalizations skills, fuck me.
I never realized the symmetry between Neil and Jean and their twisted fate. I’m very glad that Neil got to have a part in this book and hopefully a part in jeans healing.
I need book 2 NOW Nora!
