The Diary of Penny Polendina

The other day I was inspired to try working on a different NeverFell Projects installment, one that would probably be a lot shorter and quicker to write, because it's not like I care that deeply about Penny, right??

Well, I was incredibly wrong. ^^; So wrong that I'm actually having trouble with this story now...essentially, Penny goes through a bit of a 'rebellious phase' (gross oversimplification, but that's all you get for now) and there are, surprisingly, a lot of aspects of that character arc that I want to explore. Plus, a pivotal connection with Pyrrha, the climax of which I haven't quite figured out yet...

God only knows if I'll be able to finish, or if I'll just write the first 2/3rds of the story and leave it at that. But I figured I might as well warm up by talking about the designs. ^^

Penny's new look is basically 'Disney's Pinocchio, color picked from Arthur Watts' character design'~

I didn't necessarily want her to look evil, just...bolder. Like she specifically picked 'daring' items that maybe her father or Ironwood's PR team would rather she didn't wear, at least not compared to the more innocent frilly pastels she had on before. Between the chest window, midriff, and short sleeves, she's actually showing a lot more skin than before, despite still being 90% covered up. ^^;

Those multicolored wrist accessories are prototype weapons invented by Dr. Watts, that mix and pressurize Dust from the cartridges to cast "artificial magic". This way I get to do a bit of the 'Winter Maiden Penny' stuff in this Vol. 3-locked AU~

Penny's magic usage is one of the things that stumped me when writing this story...In NeverFell, magic isn't just glowy rainbow lasers or weather powers-- it essentially allows the user access to any conceivable semblance at any time; its potential is limitless. Being a beginner, Penny would probably just come up with one signature 'spell' to use in tandem with her Floating Array...but I can't decide what I want her to do. ^^; I think I'd like for her to do something connected to dance, because I feel like that's something unique to her, the way she dances with her weapons before striking. Nobody ever points out how the "robot" in the cast is the one who chooses to spend energy on unnecessary movements that aren't even used to maneuver around an enemy; they're just cute and fun. ^^ I think that's a great encapsulation of who Penny is~

Redesigning Pyrrha is always super difficult, because her original design is so perfect. But I like this end result a LOT. ^^ I may need to adjust the pant legs a bit, but overall it feels like a very believable alt outfit that keeps the spirit of the character.

Pyrrha is another one of the stumbling blocks in this story, because I'm now forced to create at least one malleable personality trait for her-- i.e. one that isn't intrinsically tied to Jaune and/or the plot. Something that she could actually take into a meaningful relationship with a different character... I had the idea to expand her "I'm sorry!" gag into a real guilt complex, where she has trouble letting go of instances where she's made mistakes or hurt someone. In this case, dismembering Penny 1.0 and essentially ending her life. :T She seeks out 2.0 in a desperate effort to make things right, and ends up helping her with ...things, and growing as people or whatever, and all that other stuff I have yet to write. ^^;

I just realized that Pyrrha could use her polarity semblance to pull Penny towards her in a situation where they need to reach each other...that's so cute. ^^ I gotta remember that~

I originally featured this $20usd Banpresto gem in the early days of the page. It's been a mainstay in my collection display ever since.

I even managed to fix the leaning issue (with repeated heat treatments, some finesse, and a little glue)

It's such a handsome piece. Beautiful little sculpt for a toy that's intended to be a claw game prize in Japan.

And a particularly vital artifact for me, because early US broadcasts of Mazinger Z (as Tranzor Z here) are why I'm so fascinated by internal mechanical shots and cutaways of robots.

Another idea came to my mind with tiny human and a big robot with first contact au.

Ok you see the robot finds it super adorable how you try to get to places on his ship but you always keep jumping off.

- Hey isn't that fun!

- You know you can ask me for help. The best part is when you get stuck in some empty energon cubes - said that bot laughing some more.

-I didn't do it on purpose.... It's not funny! - you said waving your arms as if you were a child making him laugh more.

You got up and were about to go to the door and there was that problem again. You sat on the floor crossing your arms and pouting. You didn't feel that was fair, what was the advantage of being so small in these situations?

Until the bot picked you up in his hands looking at you with a small smile.

-Don't be angry, little one. I think it's adorable how you try, I like that fighting spirit you have. Besides you have your advantages - said the bot while he wrapped his arms around you and let you closer to his spark - It makes me love you more ...

You end up completely blushing not knowing what to say.

Maybe it wasn't so bad to be so small.

🧍‍♀️to see how their chaotic students take care of a magical baby doll that takes the personality and some of features of the 2 students who take care of it.

🧍‍♀️So how would they dorm leaders react to having to this project with their s/o and them becoming parents for a week.💞

How would it go and how would there grades look like for this. Riddle would be struggling in the beginning but he got the spirit. Leona being to lazy but glad that his s/o is good with children. Azul struggling and having to ask Floyd to give the child back and having to see his s/o giving the baby jewellery to make them flamboyant. Kalim having fun with his s/o them being the best an jamil being happy he took it serious only to have him stop buying things for the robot child. Vil hates babies but this one is adorable because it has both parents beauty and him telling his s/o that a doll can't hold wepons. Idia wanting altering the baby so it can fly to him and his s/ o who takes care of the child mainly with ortho because Idia is freaking out. Malleus being extremely protective over the robotic child and is struggling to get lillia to back away from it and his s/o forgetting where she put the child but trying her best.

And just because ace and deuce are in this project both together(because I love chaos ) .

Riddle Rosehearts

When he heard that each class no matter the grade was doing a combined project, he was intrigued. What was better was that he was paired up with you. You both sat together, and you were being very affectionate, which made him a bit flustered. Then, the news was dropped: they were doing the robotic baby project.

This man went frozen as he realized what the project would entail, but you seemed so excited. You even clung to his arm exclaiming about how you both would be parents for a week. Once you both received the baby, you held it in your arms and it immediately stopped crying. Riddle fell in love all over again when he saw you gently rocking the robot in your arms.

You both decided that it would be best if you stayed over at Heartslabyul for the week, as it was the most structurally sound out of the two dorms. There were many crying babies, and you were rushing around trying to help the other students. Your boyfriend was also struggling, but he wanted to make sure that he did his part of the project.

His father wasn’t too involved with his upbringing, so he wanted to make sure that he didn’t do the same thing. He definitely didn’t want to become his mother either. With you by his side, he’s sure that he will do alright. All he knew was that Ace and Deuce were probably going to need the most help out of his dorm because he can at least handle the baby on his own. The ADeuce duo couldn’t handle their baby together.

Leona Kingscholar

The one day he actually shows up to class, and the professors dump the shitty project on all of the students’ shoulders. Well, at least he was paired up with you. From what he’s seen in your interactions with Cheka, you were good with children.

He could see it again when you both were actually handed the robotic baby. It was already sleeping, so the lion made a guess that this would be rather easy. After all, the child was supposed to take after both parents. He was just praying that it didn’t adopt your habit of getting up super early in the morning.

Well, his prayers were answered for your guys’ baby. The same can’t be said for the rest of Savanaclaw. So, Leona watched the small robot as you made your rounds with tips on how to calm down the babies. You came back to find your boyfriend cuddling the automaton, which was very adorable to see.

I feel like you were able to gain a perspective on how he was raised based on how he treated the child. Even though it wasn’t real, he made it feel like it was. You both actually kept level heads during the whole project, and you got a really good grade. That, in turn, saved the lion from failing the class.

Azul Ashengrotto

He was glad to know that he was paired up with his girlfriend for this very suspicious and very random project that the professors are facilitating. The confidence that you exuded when Professor Crewel announced what the project exactly was made him feel confident as well.

Once you both had received the magical robot, that was when the nerves kicked in for the cecaelia. The baby seemed to be very content in your muscular arms, and even in his leaner ones, which soothed his worries. Actually, the infant was a rather happy one, and it made his heart swoon as he watched you interact with it.

The tweels (more specifically Floyd) had deemed themselves as the uncles of the baby and were ready to spoil it even though it wasn’t real. You also wanted to spoil it with all the flamboyant jewelry and clothing you could find. This was very stressful for the Lounge owner.

The merman was glad once the project was over, but you both did very well on it. You both received an 85%, points being docked because neither of you knew how to care for a half-mer-half-human hybrid. Remember that the baby was magical, and is supposed to take after both ‘parents’.

Kalim Al-Asim

He was very excited about being paired up with his fiery girlfriend, and even more so when everyone found out what the project was. You both had experience with taking care of children (Kalim had less experience because he had servants), so you knew that you both would ace this assignment.

When you received the little robot, Kalim stood in front of you as you held it. The baby was smiling, and you are hit with memories of taking care of your younger brother. Oh, those days are long gone now, especially because you didn’t know when you would get back to your world.

Upon arriving back at Scarabia, Jamil had volunteered to help take care of the infant but you refused, saying you had adequate experience. Plus, he had his own robot to take care of, so he needed to be able to focus. You promised to keep Kalim in line, and multiple times already you have had to stop him from spending a ridiculous amount of money immediately.

Kalim will actually cover the night shifts with the automaton because he knows that you need your sleep since you bring the baby to class, to lunch, you change the diapers during the day, etc. He believes that as your significant other, he should do his part in taking care of the robot and that you should get a full night of sleep. Because of this system, you both get a 90%.

Vil Schoenheit

To say that he was not pleased about the project would be the understatement of the century, and he wasn’t very keen on having you as his partner even though you were his lover. But, it might actually end well because you were raised by boars and thus might know how to take care of a child.

Well, the magic casted onto the robot made it take after both of its ‘parents’, so it was very brash and was definitely a baby who would not be put to sleep without kicking and screaming. Vil was close to calling his father for advice when he heard that the cries stopped. He looked and saw you laying with the infant, silent for once.

The entire week had its ups and downs, and Vil already broke out in acne but you both survived. He had to explain that the infant could not hold a weapon. Overall, it was definitely a learning experience for the two of you.

You both did fairly well, actually. You both played your roles as mother and father, and the movie star got a look into your upbringing. You were raised similar to Epel, where it was hurt or be hurt. So you reflected that into your parenting. A 90% on both report cards, the highest in Pomefiore.

Idia Shroud

Again, the one time he goes to class in-person, and the project assigned has a baby involved. He didn’t even know how to take care of a baby. He didn’t even know how to take care of himself sometimes. At least he was partnered up with you, since you had experience and you could teach him how to take care of the infant.

Upon arriving at Ignihyde with the robot, Idia saw you talking to it as though it was real. It reminded him of his mom for some reason. He let you in and asked what the strategy would be, which is when you told him that any plan would most likely fail because babies are spontaneous. Ortho offered to help, and you dubbed him ‘Uncle Ortho’.

Because you spent most of the time with the baby during daytime hours, he covered the nighttime hours. Not only does he not already have a good sleep schedule, but he knew that you needed adequate sleep. Thus, that was the only strategy that was set in place. Luckily, the baby was one filled with love, even if it was a bit shy. It often just cried because it was lonely, so it slept with you guys instead of inside of the crib.

You both did okay. The beginning of the project was definitely rough, with Idia panicking whenever the infant cried and you having to explain why it was crying. You luckily had knowledge about taking care of babies because you often had to take care of your siblings back in your world. The eldest shroud sibling eventually caught on, and he was able to take care of it while you went to classes in-person. So, an 85% was given.

Malleus Draconia

The one most of you guys were probably waiting for. Anyways, he was actually very excited when he was paired up with you for a project because that means his mate didn’t have to grow close with another man. He was even more excited when the project was announced.

Once the baby was in your arms, reality sunk in for the dragon prince: you both were going to be parents for a week. You both would be responsible for taking care of the child. He stood behind you, looking over your shoulder as you were shushing and rocking the small infant to sleep so that you could make it to Diasomnia.

He was the one with the most experience with taking care of children, but the robot for some reason liked you more. Lilia was constantly trying to steal the automaton, and with your demon slaying senses you were able to duck and weave, much to the dismay of the bat fae and to the amusement of the dragon fae.

You both actually excelled at the project, with a 95%. You had 5% taken off because there was a point where you forgot where you placed the baby and caused the entire dorm to freak out. Turns out, it was sleeping in a blanket nest that you had absentmindedly made.

hermit species headcanons: volume… 2!

i made this post two years ago when i was fresh to the series and was just getting to know the hermits. a lot has changed since then, but a lot has also stayed the same! my headcanons are getting refined every single time i talk about them, so chances are, this list won't even be accurate to my thoughts a year later.

with that being said, let's get started! click the cut to read them all

bdubs: glare! small, hates the dark, is a feral creature, will never let go of the moss. he and pungance were born from the same tree in the same patch of moss so they are brothers LMAO

beef: vampire! but not a full one. he was bitten by a bat and gained two vampiric traits exactly: fangs and sensitive skin. beef thinks his tendency to get sunburnt easily is just something in his code or a genetic condition. he never got it checked.

cub: alien shapeshifter! his original form is this shapeless void blob, and he can only copy how other beings look like. his forms were taken from two astronauts he saw in space, an old man and a young man. his void form can be seen slightly on his inner arm, where there is just a sliver of night sky hanging out

cleo: zombie (duh) cleo was permakilled by a witch's curse but when faced with the pearly gates they were like. nah. i'd rather be down there. and just straight up left and came back as a zombie. that's how she met joe. because he was sitting on top of her tombstone eating a sandwich

doc: originally a fae, but now he's super fucked up? what can i even say. he was a fae who got super interested in the sciences and started experimenting on himself just for the hell of it. there was that whole dinnerbone cyborg arm thing but he also managed to make himself a centaur form that he uses for extra storage and height. nobody knows where the creeper came from. was it from his dad's side? did he give it to himself? not even stress, his cousin, can tell you how he came to be. what the hermits DO know however is that he can steal pronouns by asking for them

etho: redstone deity! etho was an ancient builder who was executed for witchcraft upon his discovery of redstone. he was resurrected by the universe as a second chance and to spread his knowledge to the world. you can read more from my fic here ehehehehe

false: human! yes she is 100% human. i just thought it would be funny if such an awesome and skilled fighter was just some normal ass human with a bit of social anxiety

gem: forest spirit! she has nature powers and can change parts of her body to reflect parts of nature. she's a deer? an elf? nope! only sometimes. she can mix and match whatever traits she wants on any given day. but be careful of those deer legs and horns. they Hurt

grian: red macaw avian! he has bird feathers covering his ears, parrot wings, and bird talons! he is also able to mimic voices perfectly (which he uses to play pranks and swear in other hermits’ voices) and is a Hollow Boned Menace. he carries a lot of bird tendencies, like being a piece of shit or preening his friends’ hair when it’s too messy (which is always). in start of seasons, he has x lock away usage of his wings to keep himself from an unfair advantage. he also has stolen powers from the watchers, which he can use to change his wing colors or view the entire map from afar.

npg: ????????????? he’s supposed to be a robot, but he has wings and flies sideways?????? he’s somehow even more fucked up than robot grian. not even grian is sure of what he created tbh. he just knows he did NOT give npg those conure wings to begin with.

ariana griande: galah avian! she is grian's cousin who is a pop star. she has never actually been on hermitcraft before -- that was grian cosplaying as her.

hypno: human warlock! he accidentally made a pact when he replaced his tooth with a piece of cursed gold. jokes on his patron though, his faulty human memory can't even remember how he got his powers! he has lots of inscriptions as tattoos written in galactic just all over his body that he completely forgot how to read at this point and is immortal. maybe that's a bit bad for his sense of self-preservation

impulse: demon/imp! he used to be a gargoyle that dispensed candy, but a wizard passing by granted him life and well. now he's here! demons are actually underworld spirits that punish permadead players who have been genuinely horrible to the players around them, but impulse wanted to build houses and play with redstone instead of stirring the torture soup. so when he met skizz he decided hanging out with the players was the best thing to do. he also used to have larger horns and wings but his time on the surface has made his wings very tiny and unusable without the help of an elytra. skizz always teases him for this.

iskall: cyborg! the hermits don't know if he was fully human before the cyborgification. me, personally? i think it would be funny if she was actually built to protect a village but had too much of a personality so the villages just let him go have fun with the players. not sure if i want to adhere to that though

jevin: slime! certain slimes have evolved to be more like players. jevin is from the blue variety (that's his gender)

joe hills: ???????? void-born universe being??? joe is actually the oldest living being in the universe. he was just popped out of void (even predating the void gods) and spent all this time just doing whatever fuckall was around to do. he looks like a normal human being but just Slightly to the left, like his a bit-too-many teeth or slight lean when he stands. other than that, he acts like any other human!

joel: human mage! he actually only has powers of illusion that changes only how he looks. he Really wanted to be an orc but the spell couldnt last forever (as his fae wife lizzie found out after marriage). every day he wishes he had as much swag as shrek did. more on the headcanon here

keralis: weird fucking eldritch cryptid being? except he looks exactly like a human. nothing weird about him, nope. just don't look too closely at his eyes. he promises that he blinks like a normal person and not with his pupils.

mumbo: robot! with a core heart and stretchy limbs, he runs mainly on the consumption of redstone and occasionally typical foodstuffs. he had a creator before the days of hermitcraft (who originally built him as a war machine but something went deeply sideways during construction) that taught him all there is to know about redstone and the outside world. he also inherited the british accent and mustache from his creator. his creator did want him to be free and wiped mumbo's memory of his creation before setting him off into the overworld and letting him roam free. now he's just a silly guy!

grumbot: robot! he was first built to give suggestions on what to do with the mayoral elections but then he developed actual attachments to his horribly neglectant dads </3 but it's alright! he now chills with renbob and goatman up in the hermitheus

pearl: moon spirit! she was the moon from a player's hardcore world. the player used to talk to the moon for fun, but suddenly disappeared from the world one day. now feeling lonely, pearl took a humanoid form and descended to find where her player went, but she ended up discovering the joys of being a player herself. contrary to popular belief, she had no influence on the season 8 moon.

ren: weredog! can shapeshift into a dog form, which he usually uses to either run fast or play fetch. he’s also more prone to change when the moon is larger…. except he just becomes a hyperactive dog who chases his tail all night and is deeply embarrassed by it. he also probably has rabies, but everyone whom he has bitten probably already had something deeply wrong with them to begin with anyway

renbob: human...? he's related to ren from the human side, or at least that what he tells people. but he might as well be 50% weed by now

scar: human(?) wizard! he can fly, subtly change his physical appearance, cast spells, and do all sorts of magical shenanigans! he also can read galactic fluently, which is how he learned that hypno enchanted himself with loyalty at some point. jellie is his beloved familiar. also he's a capitalist. nobody knows where that came from

skizz: angel! why are there angels in minecraft, you might ask? some people are satisfied with their lives and let themselves permadie. skizz, after being born randomly from an angel statue (i wonder if it’s related to the other statue guy) was supposed to be one of the angels who helped escort players to the pearly gates, but he met impulse while his demon clan was taking a field trip to heaven. the two immediately became besties and skizz begged the universe to let him join the players. the universe begrudgingly agreed and now he's here! he hides his many other halos as ring tattoos on his arms as well

stress: fae! she's got fairy powers, magical swag, an affinity for flowers, and will beat you up if you assume she's the resident server cleric.

tango: ex-blazeborn! he saw some yummy packed ice and ate it, which extinguished his internal flame. his blazeborn tribe felt bad for him but knew it would be dangerous if he stayed, so tango just left for the overworld instead. he tries to convince people that he is 100% a human and not suspicious at all because he's embarrassed of having to explain that he lost most of his powers due to eating some yummy ice cream. a more detailed post about my headcanon can be found here

tfc: human! the only non-human aspect of him is a prosthetic leg. contrary to popular belief, he did not lose that leg while mining. it was after fighting a horde of skeletons. (he won)

xb: guardian! he was a guardian made to guard the magical treasures of ancient builders, but he got bored of staying in the same spot for centuries and his creators never returning. hypno casted a spell of bipedelity on xb, so now he can walk on land! i wrote a fic about it here too

xisuma: voidwalker! created by the young void gods, he was made from a fucking mspaint file where the void gods dicked around with the program and made a deeply fucked up being (him) on accident. he has no mouth, his hands are as black as the void, and his voice is terrifying without a modulator, which is why he wears a helmet. more about it in my fic here

evil x: also a voidwalker, but this time the void gods pressed random on a picrew and sent him out into an alternate dimension. he grew up in super england until x fished him out of the void. this little rascal has red scleras, ram horns, and a devil tail. he doesn't need to sleep, so he gets all his energy from eating, which is convenient because his sharp teeth can crunch anything and he can digest everything. his hair acts like an enderchest with a portal to the void, where he keeps snacks and various trinkets.

WINTER 2024 ANIME RECOMMENDATIONS

I counted and there are 8.5 blonde ladies in either a lead or primary love interest role this season (8 if you count the one whose hair is sometimes black as half of one). Do what you will with this information. I only share it because it’s something that was ticking me off that I noticed.

Anyway, we’re trying out a new format this season: Instead of only recommending anime we’re not familiar with, we’re each picking one we are familiar with and one we went into completely blind.

ACE’S RECOMMENDATION #1: MR. VILLAIN’S DAY OFF

After the deluge of isekai that try to teach the importance of having a healthy work-life balance by having the lack of one kill off it’s main character in the first five minutes of the episode, it’s really nice to have something that teaches the same lesson by choosing to model what one looks like rather than killing anybody. It’s also got a lot of pandas in it, which is always nice.

ACE’S RECOMMENDATION #2: SENGOKU YOUKO

Satoshi Mizukami seemingly can’t catch a break with anime adaptations of his manga: Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer sucked and this one is being seriously overshadowed by all the other really good and/or long-looked-forward-to adaptations this season. (Planet With was an anime first so it escaped the curse.)

Anyway, please watch this and have your friends watch this and buy the Blu–Rays and have your friends buy the Blu-Rays so my dream of a (good!!!) Spirit Circle anime can someday come true.

CHARLIE’S RECOMMENDATION #1: SOLO LEVELING

(for the sake of our more sensitive readers, actual screenshots of the anime cannot be shown at this time)

If you like Cheat System anime, and don’t mind “a bit” of graphic violence (read: so much. There’s just so much violence.) , give this a shot. It’s based on one of the Korean manhua that made the genre what it is today, and as far as I’m concerned, they’ve done a good job being faithful to their source so far - they didn’t even give them Japanese names, you guys.

CHARLIE’S RECOMMENDATION #2: A SIGN OF AFFECTION

It’s cute, and disability rep is always a bonus. I like how they animated the sign language, which seems fairly realistic to me, someone who speaks no sign languages.

FEN’S RECOMMENDATION #1: LOOKING UP TO MAGICAL GIRLS

This is a series I’ve been following since there were only five chapters out in the manga, so I would like to preface this recommendation by saying I’m the only one who’s actually right about it. I’m a veteran, a true soul who’s stuck with it for the past x years since it first released, and as such everything I say about it is valid and correct and anything people who aren’t as familiar with it says is complete horseshit pulled out of their ass. This is a factual statement.

Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete, which has been translated for the manga as “Looking up to Magical Girls” (correct) and by vile HIDIVE as “Gushing Over Magical Girls” (bad and wrong) is a trashy, over-indulgent yuri series for weird perverts that is good, actually, (genuinely), and if the adaptation manages to capture Onanaka Akihiko’s remarkably deft hand in weaving the series’ fetish gags with the story’s genuine moments of pathos and surprising character depth then the anime will also be good, actually.

Dude trust me.

FEN’S RECOMMENDATION #2: METALLIC ROUGE

This is an anime original series about super fighting robots on Mars doing a hitman shit on android rebels for the government and also yuri, maybe. ACAB includes Rouge Redstar, watch this show.

BONUS RECOMMENDATIONS: DUNGEON MESHI AND ‘TIS TIME FOR “TORTURE,” PRINCESS

A recommendation to watch Dungeon Meshi is the most redundant thing on the planet this season, but even so you should still watch Dungeon Meshi. Also, Fen and I had a bit of a back-and-forth over who would recommend Torture Princess since it was something she was familiar with and something I had only heard of and I wasn’t going to recommend it because I thought she would and she apparently chose not to recommend it because she thought I was going to so take it as a recommendation both from someone who is and someone who isn’t familiar with Torture Princess to watch Torture Princess.
