What Makes a Story Satisfying?

This is of course only my own point of view, but it’s an idea that came to me recently. Like: why are some stories so satisfying that we love to read, hear or watch them over and over, and others aren’t?

A good, if not perfect way to make a story satisfying is a plot twist. In order to work, it must fulfil these prerequisites:

happen towards the end of the story

be wholly surprising, even better if “magical” (supernatural)

be connected with love / affection

lead to happiness / fulfilment

Good examples

In Beauty and the Beast, the magical moment takes place because Belle is wholly unaware of the nature of the spell that is being lifted. She is stunned and in awe when everything changes, and so are we.

In Snow White, the dwarfs and the prince do not know that the heroine is not dead but under a spell. Much of the happiness of the finale comes from the fact that her reawakening is a total, wondrous surprise for everybody involved.

In Cinderella, nobody was expecting that the heroine would have the second glass slipper at hand which would identify her as the right girl.

In The Little Mermaid, we do not expect that Ariel’s father will relent at last, much less that he has the power to give her a human form.

In Moon Knight, in Episode 4 Marc finds his alter ego Steven, and despite their earlier bickering they form a strong bond and, in the last two episodes, resolve Marc’s internal trauma together.

In the first classic Star Wars film, Han Solo comes back at the last moment to save his friend Luke. In The Empire Strikes Back, Leia can feel where Luke is so that they can rescue him. In Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader unexpectedly chooses to save his son in the end at the cost of his own life.

In The Last Jedi, Kylo / Ben kills Snoke in the throne room scene instead of Rey. This leads to a dramatic scene in which both young people fight the Imperial Guards together, effectively showing that together, Light Side and Dark Side are invincible.

The first season of The Mandalorian ends with the redemption of Greef Karga, the shady leader of the bounty hunter’s guild, after the mysterious child has healed his deadly wound with the aid of the Force.

The Book of Boba Fett ends with Mando’s unexpected rescue through Grogu, who stops the rancor’s aggression by influencing his mind through the Force.

I am also a huge fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, among other things because its episodes kept surprising the viewer with unexpected, often sudden plot turns. Other Star Trek shows are much more predictable, which is why I usually can’t enjoy them.

The Netflix show Sex Education has some surprising developments and some satisfying ones, but I can’t think of a single one that is both.

The novel (and musical) The Phantom of the Opera ends with the bad guy / protagonist unexpectedly having compassion with the heroine and letting her go after she showed compassion to him in the first place, something he had never known before.

Bad examples

The awakening of Sleeping Beauty is not a surprise for the characters, again leaving the story without the surprise effect.

One of the reasons why I am not a big fan of the Star Wars prequel trilogy is its lack of surprises.

In The Phantom Menace we learn that the handmaiden Padmé is in truth the Queen Amidala of Naboo, but this is not a supernatural turn of events. Qui Gon is killed by Maul, without an explanation except for what we can make of it: young Anakin will be trained by the less experienced and mature Obi-Wan. This is never said anywhere however.

Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith (although I find the latter a small masterpiece) also do not offer real surprises. As fans of the saga, we knew what would happen - Anakin would sire children, then turn to the Dark Side and Palpatine would take over the power over the galaxy.

Rogue One also does not offer any development or plot turn which we would not have already known or expected, and the end is depressing.

In The Clone Wars, the only unexpected development is Ahsoka leaving the Jedi temple; which is only sad and further emphasizes the moral decline of the Jedi Order.

In Ahsoka, Sabine does manage to master the Force in the end, but it leads to an open end.

Ben Solo’s ultimate redemption in The Rise of Skywalker, the only positive aspect to this atrocious movie, is not a plot twist. It happens step by step, not suddenly, and all except but the most dense of viewers already knew or highly suspected that it would happen.

In the tv show Obi-Wan Kenobi, we have Reva’s final decision to not hurt Luke after all: but since this comes out of nowhere, it falls flat.

The Mandalorian season 2 leaves a bitter aftertaste: Luke coming to Mando’s and his friend’s rescue is cool to look at, but it leads to the worst end possible - he separates Mando from Grogu, when the show made it clear from the very first episodes that these two belong together.

And now we come to the really boring part.

The Star Wars sequels, Loki, The Bad Batch, Ahsoka… all these stories offer no twist and no resolution. They introduce characters which we get attached to, and then don’t seem to know how to finish their arc.

Which leads me, in turn, to interpret why most of the latest Disney Star Wars stories suck.

They lead to no end.

There may be some surprise here and there, but it doesn’t have that twist that leaves you with that “Wow” feeling. The heroes are not saved by magic and love and they don’t find fulfilment. All these stories want is for us to continue watching, hoping that some further development will finally give the characters we have grown to love closure.

The problem is that - we don’t live forever, dear Disney studios. Neither do you.

“Stop making Star Wars political”

Shut the hell up and this is why.

The original trilogy was created around the time of the Vietnam War and a lot of it is a commentary on that. George Lucas himself has outright said that the rebels are based on the Viet Cong, a group that fought during the War, and the Empire is essentially powers such as Britain and America. The stormtroopers even have the same name as Nazi soldiers, and the costume design for Imperial officers was based on Nazi officers. It pretty much makes the OT an anti-fascist story which is, OMG, political. Yet the same people who complain about politics in Star Wars love to call this trilogy the best one yet.

Now to the prequel trilogy, which is where George Lucas wanted to explore how democracies become dictatorships and it was created around the time of 9/11 (with the exception of TPM obvi). Anakin’s famous line “if you are not with me, then you are my enemy”, is taken out of George W. Bush’s speech where he says “either you are with us, or you are with the enemy”. The Trade Federation having a seat in the Senate despite being a corporation (not representing a group of people), is essentially commentary of how corporations buy the government and abuse their power like how the Trade Fed. did by invading Naboo. There are also so many scenes throughout the trilogy showing the Senate’s incompetency and corruption which leads to them not caring about the Republic, e.g. when Queen Amidala goes to the Senate asking for help on Naboo, but nobody even gives a sh*t and she’s left on her own. Palpatine even takes advantage of Naboo’s crisis, using it to convince the Queen to make a vote of no-confidence so Palpatine can take on the role of Chancellor.

In contrast, the sequel trilogy has barely any political themes, apart from Canto Bight and young people (Kylo Ren) falling down fascist pipelines. Yeah, it doesn’t have the best story (however I do love TLJ), but it is the least political trilogy. Yet because it involves more than one woman, one gay kiss (that can conveniently be cut out from the film) and people of colour, this is the only trilogy in Star Wars that is criticised for being “too political”. Not because it has political commentary, but because it has people. People existing isn’t f*cking political, it’s normal. You and I could walk into any public area right and we wouldn’t be just seeing crowds of Luke Skywalkers, Han Solos, Anakin Skywalkers, etc. We’d be seeing Leia Organas, Finns, Rey Skywalkers, Poe Damerons, etc etc.

At least in my opinion, to say that Star Wars shouldn’t be political is an insult to George Lucas because he made it as a commentary on politics and the world. Star Wars will always be political, I mean it’s about WAR for God’s sake.

If you wanna know more about politics in Star Wars I definitely recommend searching up articles on Google, it’s actually so interesting and when I first started reading about it I was fascinated as so many things in Star Wars have some sort of political theme/message to them.

The easiest answer is the most obvious one: "why no, master yoda, i most definitely am not fucking general skywalker's brains out in secret at every available opportunity we are totes just friends i mean why would you even ask that?!?!! 😇"

BUT TO BE MORE REAL, Padmé tells so many lies for someone so devoted to truth, democracy and freedom. Most of them are lies to herself, though, so I suppose that's the difference. Just a few examples:

She literally has a public persona. That's like... a professional lie. Amidala is the public face that she crafted first for her role as Queen. When she became a Senator, she just adapted it to the culture, conventions and quirks of the Galactic Senate as opposed to the Royal Court of Naboo. As much as she wants to do good, real, important things with her public service, so much of politics genuinely is about optics. It's an aspect she's had to focus on since she was a teenager. I think in some respects, the Amidala persona is a self-protective measure. Imagine if your every decision, down to your new haircut or who you had dinner with last weekend, had the potential to be scrutinized and criticized by the media and the public? Would that not make you want to hide your real self away from the world? That way, when she gets criticized, it's Amidala they're criticizing, not Padmé. Of course, in reality, it's hard for her to separate the two, so the criticism ends up being taken personally too, but hey... no one's perfect, even in their lies.

She tells herself that she is important, that she's essential to making her people's lives better and to protecting democracy. I don't think this is a lie born of arrogance. It's more of a necessary one to motivate her in light of lie #3 (below.) But she's isn't someone who got into politics for power or fame. She's not in it to amass great wealth. She truly wants to help people and make the galaxy (or at least her sector of it) a better place. Although she wanted to settle down into civilian life after she finished her term as Queen, she bought into the lie that "the galaxy needs you!" and she's just kept serving because if she doesn't do it, then who will or rather, who will do it RIGHT?

Sometimes (aka very often), she denies her own feelings or desires because "doing her duty is more important" or "she owes it to Naboo/the galaxy." I think this is a central tension for her in AOTC. She is clearly wrestling with what she perceives to be her duty to the galaxy versus her almost overwhelming desire for Anakin. She managed to hold out on that for all of what... two weeks? Even though I do think Padmé is a person who makes emotional, snap decisions when people she loves are involved, going from "don't look at me like that" to "I truly, deeply love you" in the space of two weeks is like... next level ridiculous. Unless she had been denying that part of herself for years. Of course, Anakin himself is quite the temptation (and I will not wax effusively on about all the reasons why she loves him here), but I don't see another reason for her to make such a quick reversal (other than it being necessary to the narrative LOL.) I think of her like a dormant volcano. She has all that hot passion and emotion under the surface, like magma. And when she let Anakin kiss her at Varykino, that was like the first crack in the surface that let a little of that magma escape. After that, a full scale eruption was inevitable.

Kylo has been the ruler of the underworld for centuries and since the titans fall by the hands of the gods. His family become the new rulers of Olympus. His grandfather had become the God of lighting and his wife Padme, Kylo’s grandmother become the Goddess of women, marriage, and childbirth. They had two children Luke and Leia, twin gods. Luke the God of Light, music and prophecy. He wills the sun and enjoys playing the lyre. Leia the Goddess of wisdom, courage and inspiration. She was quite the strategist in battle, and she was quite the warrior herself and in battle she has her wise owl by her side, she just couldn’t strategist to fall in love with Han, the God of commerce, thieves and travellers and he had a quick wit. The wit that won Leia’s heart and was the result of their son’s birth from their love and here he is, Kylo the God of the dead and ruler of the underworld. A lonely life as he seeks lovers with nymphs which bring him no love as it is just hollow until one fateful day, he hears something above on the Earth, he knew it was something big that he needs to know what it was to prepare for a large amount of dead mortals. He wasn’t expecting to see and fall in love with the Goddess of spring and innocence, Rey.
