He looked away again as he twirled the flower in his fingers. “You know when we were talking last week, I told you about why I agreed to the engagement with Frigga?” “About the future? “Yeah, and I said that I’ve been trying to figure out what direction I wanted to go?” “Yes.” “And who I should do it with?” Rosalind stared at him, unsure what he was trying to say. Marcus turned back to them, took up Rosalind’s hand one more time in one hand, raised it to his lips, and kissed it. His own hands were trembling. Finally, he held out the camellia to them with his free hand and asked in the quietest voice they’d ever heard from him, “Will you marry me?” (Blood and Thorns, Chapter 17)
Alright, one more painting to go after this one and all 18 chapter paintings will be uploaded! It's really amazing to me that I finished such a huge project, each painting represents approximately 15-20 hours of work, more in some cases, and once the last chapter's is uploaded, I will have an update of the cover too! Maybe I'll have some fan art after that, we'll see, but my work ism going to be primarily focused on Blood and Thorns and its universe. But!! Maybe I'll do some drawings about the other characters or towns.
✨✨✨
If you like this, please reblog (it really helps artists out!!), leave a like or comment (I love hearing your thoughts, it keeps me drawing), and follow me for more (I update at least once a week) 💖

Come along with me to Ozelea, a world bursting with magic and drama! I'm building the world that these characters live in, and you can learn about it in Blood and Thorns: https://pinkchaosstories.tumblr.com/bloodandthorns

I hope you find that home soon.
Hugs! Juno <3
Juno, you're literally the sweetest for this ask. Thank you!!
I have 4 main characters in Blood and Thorns, and they're all my children and I don't have a favourite (def. lying).
Tumblr media
(Left to right: Rosalind, Marcus, Razi, and Frigga - chapter 13 of Blood and Thorns)
Frigga Thorneheart is the main character of the first book, and she's just the sweetest, femmyist lil thing. Physically little, she's like 5'2" lol. And she's supposed to inherit leadership of her coven, but she really doesn't want to. She wants to frolic in the grass and make flower crowns and do lesbian things! She's a prodigy and studied Illusion magic when she was away at school (which is thought of as very complicated and niche in this universe because of how it interacts with the brain), but she also picked up a herbalism hobby, surprise surprise. Unfortunatly, she's a people-pleaser, so she has a really hard time voicing her needs to anyone, something I have never ever ever had an issue with myself. Wouldn't know anything about that, nope. 😬
Razi Wood is the other main character and Frigga's love interest. So butch, so hot, makes incredible bread. She's non-magical servant, so Frigga's falling in love with her is sort of a bad idea. But Razi's a charmer, she's got the rizz (as the kids say apparently?), and she hates the bourgeoisie which is probably the hottest thing about her honestly. She's independent and lives by herself in one of the servants' quarters at Thorneheart Manor because her father passed a few years ago, but she's also guarding a broken heart and using that independence as a shield. Let's just say: trust issues, but we see some character development in the first book when she makes her decision. Razi is probably the best point of view to write from because she really is no-nonsense and doesn't put up with rich-people's bullshit, an attitude I admire and hope to exemplify one day.
Marcus Magnus-Monroe is the non-magical son of the coven's benefactor and is the person Frigga gets forced into an arranged marriage with. He doesn't know that, and if he did, he'd immediately call things off. He started out as an uncomplicated guy, and he's the sort of character you don't see very often because he had a wonderful childhood growing up, his parents were both great people and treated him so well, and he doesn't have any real trauma from before the age of like... 20? He's thought of by his social circle as a bit of an airhead/bimbo, and he got that reputation because of the way he behaved from the age of 20-23 (party boy, chronic man-hopping, here for a good time), but after his mother's passing at 23, he calmed down (after being smashed for a year) and got into the Family businesses. He's just a sweetie, the truest incarnation of the Golden Retriever Bisexual Boy there is, and he's so much fun to write.
Rosalind Bloodswell was the last character to be created for Blood and Thorns, and their creation fundamentally changed the story because they quickly became way too interesting for their own good. They were originally going to be a man, but I ended up putting them in the NB category for a lot of reasons. They're the Heir to Frigga's Family's Enemy Family, the Bloodswells which is a clan of necromancers. The family isn't popular, but not because of the death magic. They're thought of as conspiracy theorists, which Rosalind has done their best to distance themself from. They're the quiet, withdrawn type, the dark horse of the story, but behind the prickliness and the concrete walls they've constructed to keep everyone out, Rosalind is a sappy romantic that has been in love with a certain Golden Somebody for years. Rosalind is the reason Blood and Thorns has become a series rather than a one-off book, and out of my shorts, 90% of them feature Rosalind in some way.
This group of characters occupies approximately 90% of my brain's ram. A lot of that has to do with the fact that they embody two of my favourite relationship tropes (femme/butch and sun/moon), but I think it's such a fascinating group of opposites that I can't help coming back to them over and over! I just finished the second draft of Blood and Thorns: Restructure, which centers on Rosalind and Marcus the way that the original one focused on Frigga and Razi, so after I take a little break, I'm going to write the first draft of the third one: Blood and Thorns: Otherworld - which will feature the four of them equally (I hope). I'm excited to explore different aspects of these characters (Rosalind alone, Frigga when she was at school) as well as dynamics between characters that I've barely been able to glimpse at (Razi, the anti-bourgeoisie commoner, will have to team up with Marcus, one of the richest men in all of Ozelea (the country), and Frigga's friendship with someone we know very little about from school).
Thanks for giving me an excuse to gush about my kids! I hope you enjoyed <3

They slowed, and the world began to slowly fade back into place. The realization of what they were doing and all the reasons they shouldn’t be doing it rushed back into the forefront of their mind and Rosalind broke the kiss, though they didn’t retreat their hands. This was wrong, they reminded themself of all the reasons they hadn’t expressed their feelings for him for all those years, not least of which being that he was still fucking engaged to their coven’s future Heir. They shakily released his shirt collar, suddenly overcome with hesitation and doubt, but they didn’t remove their hand from his shoulder. (Blood and Thorns, Chapter 11)
This one is from one of my favourite chapters, and I've been sitting on this painting for a long time! Rosalind was an unexpected favourite of mine, and they're the reason I've started expanding my world from just a one-off book to a full-on series! Blood and Thorns has a sequel that I'm working on editing right now, and I have a third book planned that I'm going to start sometime in the next few months. Who knew that nonbinary witches with social anxiety would be such a heart-stealer? 🩷 (I did, I knew it the second I decided on their concept).
💋 If you like this, please reblog (it really helps artists out!!), leave a like or comment (I love hearing your thoughts, it keeps me drawing), and follow me for more (I update at least once a week) 💖
✨ Come along with me to Ozelea, a world bursting with magic and drama! I'm building the world that these characters live in, and you can learn about it in Blood and Thorns: https://pinkchaosstories.tumblr.com/bloodandthorns
👀 Available for commissions! For more information, please check out my post here: https://www.tumblr.com/pinkartwitch/739257460225916928/novas-art-commissions

Find the Word Tag
@mama-ivy tagged me approximately two weeks ago, so I'm finally doing it 😓 It's been a busy week or two and also health. Thank you for the tag, I'm so excited to play!
For these sorts of tags, I tend to sort through Blood and Thorns... but I've done it for a hot second, so, to keep it interesting, maybe I'll use its sequel as a little sneaky peeky - it's only in its second draft, so the writing's going to be a bit rough, but I'm just so anxious to start sharing it 🩷
Uncomfortable Rosalind was still having a hard time looking at the light sizzling in Frigga’s hands, the uncomfortable feeling of their brain being about to sneeze from before assaulted their consciousness again but more fiercely now. “Yes, these were in the circle’s dome, keeping it up for us.”
Follow “It takes as long as it takes, Marcus,” they rubbed at their temples and crossed their other arm over their abdomen, a swell of pain erupting there. They tried desperately to smother their reaction to it, but it was too intense. They knew Marcus saw it and they knew it would only make him more stubborn, but they weren’t going to cave like they’d been forced to yesterday. They took a deep breath, and then another. Finally the pain began to withdraw, and their hands at their temples trembled in relief. “I won’t make any promises. If I find a lead, it will be followed up on.”
Creature The voices of a dozen creatures screamed from their beast’s maw, waiting for Rosalind’s direction. Nightmarish couldn’t begin to even describe it; it glowed with a faint red aura and its sharp fur stood on end. Blackened ectoplasm dripped from its jowls and off its body like thick streaks of grease, puddling on the floor around its claws. It stood up to Rosalind’s hip, a bit smaller than it should have been, and they brushed their fingertips over its back, coating their fingertips in the cold, oily substance. The dark hue began to run up their right arm as if black ink had spilled into their veins. As their skin darkened, they became more in tune with their hound, hearing what it heard, smelling what it smelled, their every thought became its thought.
Surface Marcus rolled his eyes, his grip on their shoulder tightening. “That doesn’t mean you have to torture yourself now. You’re pushing yourself too hard, you keep doing this and you’re going to get seriously hurt.” Rosalind stood and patted Marcus on the shoulder. “Hasn’t happened yet, my love,” they said quietly, their irritation seeping into their tone. They set off for the library, steadying themself on nearby surfaces, and saw that Marcus wouldn’t let it go. He’d already asked them three times this morning to stay home, and all three times Rosalind had brushed him off; they couldn’t give him ground, not today. It was too important to get this done. If they weren’t there to see the evidence, they’d have to rely on second-hand accounts and that wasn’t acceptable. They trusted Ophelia to take thorough notes, of course they did, but it would never be the same as being in the room with the magic themself.
Stay tuned for Blood and Thorns: Restructure next year 💖
The words I pass on are: Sparkle, screen, scent, and swell

Heads up, 7 up
tagged by @at-thezenith - you're a doll 💖
rules: post 7(ish) lines and tag 7 people
From a WIP that I might post in parts - it's a bts from my main work Blood and Thorns
He saw Rosalind was putting distance between the two of them. Marcus had come to their home today for this very reason, to see if there was something he could do to get Rosalind to let their guard down. He’d been prepared for this possibility, though he hadn’t expected it to go quite so far, he was still engaged to someone else after all. “I get the feeling Frigga isn’t happy about it, like it’s not something she’s doing of her own free will.” Rosalind smirked. “You know she’s exclusively interested in women, right?” Marcus’ eyes widened in surprise. “Oh, what? Really? Did she… did she tell you?” “No, Marcus, it’s incredibly obvious.”

♟️Characters as Chess Pieces Game♟️
I'm making a new tag game, fellow writeblrs, and I'm going to tag a ton of people :P
Which of your characters would be each piece and why? You don't have to go by any kind of standardized symbolism if you don't want, it can just be vibes.
♔King: Theodore Magnus-Monroe - he isn't involved in the story much, is the money behind the queen, but is undoubtedly an important member of the community.
♕Queen: Sapphire Thorneheart- she is a powerhouse, highly influential, and sort of terrifying. She's well-known and respected, but she will not hesitate to defend her territory.
♖Rook: Razi Wood- A reliable person who sees the world in a straightforward way.
♘Knight: Rosalind Bloodswell- The wild card, they see the world through a unique lens and makes unexpected moves.
♗Bishop: Marcus Magnus-Monroe- Easy to overlook and forget but you definitely shouldn't because he will end the game if you let him.
♙Pawn: Frigga Thorneheart- This was the last character I'd decided on, and it might be unexpected, but Frigga is a people pleaser and at the whims of her queen. She takes small steps, and because of that people are quick to disregard her, but once she get to the end of her rope, she will grow and change into something formidable.
I tag: @juno-freehugs @mama-ivy @aalinaaaaaa @pb-dot @at-thezenith @holdmyteaplease @mjjune @darkromanceclh @jolovesfandoms @asterhaze @orbwrapsupreme @sehnxsucht

Oh goodie...
I'm gonna write a new scene for B&T, a book I THOUGHT was complete... chapter six is getting a refresh, but you know what? It'll be good to give Theodore and Marcus some time together because we only see that once near the end and it's not the easiest conversation. I have a side-fic with a bit of them talking, and we see more of them in the second one, but it'll be nice to inject some healthy parent-child relationship, just to show how fucked up Sapphire is. :)

Blood and Thorns - Chapter 15 (Part Two)
Chapter 15 (Part 1): Plans and Prayers (Read Chapter 1 (part one) here) - (See here for a complete list of chapters)
The plan would commence in three days. Normally the coven would meet for the full moon, but with Rosalind’s succession ceremony only a week away, the coven’s regular meeting had been cancelled. This was their only opportunity, but due to the current astrology it was a good one. Their power would be most effective between 6:43 and 8:11 in the evening, so Rosalind would come by the house at 6:00 to set up the circle they would engineer over the next three days. They explained to Razi her part: she would be responsible for physically protecting themself and Frigga during the ritual. While the contract was being broken, they would not be able to break concentration or else the two of them would be injured and the ritual would fail. Being disturbed by outsiders could mean disaster, so Razi would be their bodyguard.
An additional complication was the ritual needed to take place in Thorneheart Manor to give Frigga the best chance at making it through this in one piece. Sapphire would need to be kept away from them. If she happened upon them during the ritual, it would be nothing short of deadly, so Frigga would set up an evening for her family and the Magnus-Monroes. Not only would it keep Sapphire away, but it would also keep Marcus busy as per Rosalind’s request. In the meantime, she would keep her head down, do her best to be obedient, and rest. The rest of the spell elements were actually not too difficult to figure out. Siphoning spells weren’t a beginner technique by any measure, but this type of spell was exactly the type of magic Rosalind had been working with for the last decade. Necromancy was basically a form of energy transformation, and Rosalind was particularly gifted in the art of energy manipulation, so both witches were confident it would go smoothly.
They spent three days preparing themselves. Razi did her best to not let Frigga out of her sight lest something happen that would reduce her magical potency, but it was difficult with her increased workload. Even if she couldn’t be personally present, she made sure to keep track of where the witch was at all times and made sure her meals came back finished. She had to be as healthy as possible to have the best chances and Frigga was still in quite frail condition. So Razi did her best to protect and care for her love, to be a sturdy foundation in a rocky situation. Arranging the meeting to distract her aunt was not difficult. The two families hadn’t met since the engagement fell through the week before and, as usual, Theodore was delighted to have them just as she had predicted he would. The man was nothing if not generous.
Rosalind was making preparations too. When Marcus had mentioned he and his father were having the Thornehearts over the next evening, they had brushed it off without a reply. They were, even in that moment, engineering the exact circle they would use for this to be as safe as possible. They thanked their family guardians Marcus was so magically illiterate that even these basic sigils were lost on him. The only time they suspected Marcus was on to them was when Rosalind was making plans in case the worst should happen. They’d tried to brush it off as another thing they had to get in order as a new Head of Household, but it was clear Marcus didn’t completely buy it. This man wore his own emotions on his sleeve but he was also starting to be able to read Rosalind abnormally well. Rosalind hoped to keep him in the dark a few days longer. They’d tell him after. Probably.
They decided to indulge themself, despite their better judgement, and have Marcus over the night before. They should rest, they should sleep and take it easy, but they just needed the comfort Marcus brought, hoping his presence would calm their trembling hands. Rosalind tried to keep conversation minimal during Marcus’ stay, tried to enjoy their time together without ruminating about the following evening. They weren’t successful, their mind kept spiralling, rehashing the plan, revisiting contingencies, re-envisioning all the horrifying ways the ritual could go wrong. When Marcus was about to leave the next morning, Rosalind was flipping through a book they’d come to rely on during their studies on energy work. It wasn’t that they expected to find something new but that the book itself was familiar and grounding. In their private quarters they were sitting in their armchair next to the window. Marcus was in the process of getting his things together, fluttering around the room. “You know, if this is going to be a regular thing,” he wondered aloud, zipping his bag up, “I should probably have a set of my things here.” Rosalind looked up to Marcus from their book having barely heard him. “Hm?” “I should have things here so I don’t have to do this every time.” He looked at the witch, a smile on his face though his brow was knit together somewhat. “Oh,” Rosalind replied absently with a slight nod and looked out the window. An image flashed through their mind, this time what might happen if, gods forbid, Marcus got in the way of the ritual, and their stomach churned slightly. As their mind played that horrifying visual over and over, Rosalind was startled by Marcus gently tugging the book from their hand. He set it on their side table, and pressed a kiss onto their knuckles. His lips were so warm against their chilled hands, Rosalind couldn’t stop staring at him, but the witch winced when they realized how obviously they were trembling. The man would have noticed it too, and when his eyes opened and looked into theirs, Rosalind saw he was worried. After a quiet moment, the man spoke, his voice quiet and sad, “Please, what’s going on? What are you not telling me?” Rosalind cursed internally, looking quickly away from him once more. They had tried to keep the walls up, walls indestructible for everyone except this man in front of them. He seemed to not even be aware there were walls these days. With his hand gripping their’s, Rosalind’s heart begged them to tell him the truth. “I…can’t tell you, Marcus.” His face immediately shifted from concern into something more grave. “Why not?” Rosalind braced themself locking their eyes to the floor. “I can’t tell you. I’ll tell you tomorrow, I promise. I need you to trust me.” Marcus didn’t reply immediately, and Rosalind thought he would keep pressing and try to make them tell him anyway. Their shoulders tensed, their teeth ground. But instead he grabbed their other hand, both of their hands were more obviously trembling now, and placed another kiss on their forehead. “I do trust you.” Rosalind released the breath they’d been holding, pulling Marcus in for a hug, relieved he was letting it go. “Thank you, my love.”
///
Frigga had arranged to go on a walk on the afternoon before the ritual and Razi was just relieved they’d have an afternoon together before this went down. The groundswoman had led the two of them to the forest’s edge where they’d visited on their very first afternoon together. They sat in heavy silence. While Frigga had tried to explain what was going to happen, it was all still too dangerous for Razi to be happy with the plan. She was doing her best to be strong, but she was terrified. “You better survive, Frigga,” Razi said tensely, ripping out a nearby weed and tearing at it with absentminded fidgeting. Better this than trying to whittle something and slicing part of her thumb because she was distracted. The witch smiled sadly. “I have to do this, Raz, you know that.” Razi nodded. “I know. And I’m real happy you’ve a chance. ’S just you people and your magic are terrifying.” Frigga chuckled darkly. “I know.” The larger woman threw the shreds of plant matter before resting her hands on bent knees solemnly. “I feel like I’ve pushed you into it,” she confessed with a wavering voice. The wind shivered through the trees and Frigga reached for Razi’s hand, squeezing it tenderly. “Honestly?” She looked into Razi’s eyes. “You’re right, if you weren’t in my life, I probably wouldn’t be doing this. I’m so grateful you are.” Razi immediately pulled Frigga into a hug, but they were unstable so the women fell in a pile, Frigga on Razi’s chest. The witch moved to get off her love, but the woman held her fast, so Frigga settled down on top of her. Razi wished they could stay like this longer, wished she could hold this tiny woman in her arms, and wished that the only thing the witch needed protection from was pirates and werewolves, not shitty aunts and shifty vampires. “I wish I could do more t’ help you,” she admitted. “I feel useless.” Frigga gripped at Razi’s shirt hem in return and shook her head. “This wouldn’t be possible without you.” No more talking, not right now. Words meant nothing when their whole world could fall apart in a few hours. They held each other, softly weeping for each other, and Razi whispered a desperate prayer in her heart. If there was a god that could help, she begged they keep Frigga safe and for this to go off without a hitch. Eventually, they went back inside for Frigga to get dressed up for the dinner she was to miss. As they rounded the last corner to the house, she downed a potion she had crafted the night before; it would temporarily give her an elevated temperature to make her “sudden illness” appear as convincing as possible. It wouldn’t actually make her feel sick, but it would make her feel hot to others’ touch. Doris greeted her at the back door. She mentioned offhand to them that she was quite warm and was ready to get seated in her usual amicable, sweet manner, and the performance had begun.
They couldn’t make any big moves until Sapphire was out of the house. Razi rushing servants away from the magical studio’s wing would be so incredibly suspicious that it had to be done at the last minute, but she did start to redirect a few people towards the opposite end of the house with chores she "needed some help with” for a couple of hours. It was maddening, every tick of the clock rang in Razi’s ear. It was 4:30, Sapphire was due at the Magnus-Monroes by 5:30 which meant she would be leaving in about half an hour, leaving Razi about an hour to get that wing of the house clear. Rosalind would arrive shortly after six, allowing enough time to set up the space, and at 6:43 the work would commence. Hopefully Frigga would be free from her contract by seven. Razi was in the kitchen when Doris rushed in asking for some ice water and chamomile, Lady Frigga had fallen ill and would be staying behind. Razi set out to gather the items requested when Stephan walked into the kitchen. “Miss Wood, the Lady Thorneheart has requested you.” Well, shit. Razi’s heart stopped but she kept her face neutral. She knew Sapphire was incredibly perceptive, suspiciously so at times. It was crucial she not be in this house longer than necessary. “Yes of course.”

Blood and Thorns - Chapter 7 (part 1)
Chapter 7 (Part One): Parties and Invitations (Read Chapter 1 (part one) here) - (See here for a complete list of chapters) **Updated with minor (though important) changes April 30 2023
Just a quick Author’s Note: if you’ve read B&T on other platforms, you might notice these parts going forward will be different. I’m currently going through another round of editing! Thank you everyone who’s read any part of this and please leave your feedback/comments and/or like/share/reblog/etc. 😘
The Magnus-Monroes hosted the engagement party a week after Frigga’s birthday. It was small, just the coven members and their families, and much more relaxed than the formal ball had been. It was a calm environment, the witches mingled easily, mostly talking about their own magical work or some work that was going on as the summer solstice neared. Frigga and Marcus were arm in arm, accepting congratulations from different members, and Frigga was in a good enough mood that evening that it was almost nice. Everyone had something to say, mostly about how good the match would be for everyone and how they were relieved for Marcus to finally settle down.
In between the well-wishes, Marcus would lean into Frigga and crack some joke or make an observation. After Victoria Bloodswell had politely and somewhat coldly congratulated them, he took the opportunity. “That woman is almost as scary as your aunt. If I didn’t know better, I’d say she’s turned into a ghost herself. Should we ask the Blackwoods to hold a seance the next time we need to hold a business meeting?” He stuck the tip of his tongue out and winked.   Frigga giggled, lightly slapping Marcus’ arm that linked with hers. “Shush, she’s just like that. She’s not my aunt’s biggest supporter.”   “Really? I had no idea! I thought she constantly looked like she was trying to explode your aunt’s brain telepathically for fun,” Marcus teased.   Anyone who saw Victoria Bloodswell interact with the Thornehearts would see the bad blood. Something about leadership being stolen from her family, blah blah blah, generations ago founders did a thing, et cetera. It was all very abstract, and Frigga wasn’t sure there was any truth in such claims as the family had never been able to produce sufficient proof to back them up.     She briefly looked around the room, taking in the scene. Who hadn’t they spoken with yet? They’d seen the Morgansons and Cromwells, Ophelia and Aphrodite Rynauld were in a lively conversation with Morgan Blackwood about something, and the Downspires were in the middle of searching for their youngest daughter who, Frigga was pretty sure, was hiding under the table with Leland in the opposite corner of the room.   It was cute, actually, Leland’s friendship with Celeste. She was about a year older than him and was quite gifted. Leland had some kind of crush on her. Frigga couldn’t blame him, she was a cute kid, and it was honestly good for him to be around someone his age who was magical. He wasn't very interested in the comings-and-goings of the coven, so being around Celeste was a good way of getting him involved in the group’s social life.   A small exploding noise followed by surprised yelps and coughing of two small children captured Frigga’s attention. She quickly glanced at Marcus, who nodded and released her to investigate in the other corner of the room. She was readily joined by Sapphire as it sounded like Leland might be hurt. But when the two children crawled out from the table they were uninjured. Leland was covered in some sort of neon blue dust, like it had exploded in his hands. It painted the entirety of his pastel blue button-down, his palms heavily coated, most of his face, and some even settled into his mop of short red curls. Celeste giggled, less heavily affected though was decorated with a significant coating of blue down the front of her pink dress and in her black coiled buns as well. “Something magical happened!”   Sapphire and Frigga looked from Celeste to Leland who laughed in a carefree way, who was starting to get to his feet. “She was showing me her conjurations, and I wanted to try!”   “Wait, Leland, did you do that?” Sapphire asked breathlessly, grabbing a napkin from the table they’d crawled out from under.   “Yeah, it didn’t go very good! It exploded!”   The room froze when everyone heard Leland’s explanation. And then Aurora Morgansons began to excitedly clap closely followed by the rest of the guests, and Frigga and Sapphire gathered Leland up in a big hug, his aunt planting a kiss on his cheek much to the young boy’s obvious embarrassment. He had finally confirmed it: he was a witch and Frigga was ecstatically proud of him.   Once the applause died down, Frigga took her brother to get cleaned up while the party continued on, more excitedly and energized than before. It was rare a youngster would be confirmed around so many people, but everyone had been privileged to see it. It was a happy thing.   She carefully led Leland to the nearest powder room and had him sit on a chair after making sure he wouldn’t accidentally ruin it with the blue dust. “Hang on, I’ll get us a towel or something.”   “Sure, thanks Frigga.” The young boy peered around the room curiously, his legs kicking the seat.   She found a rag, dampened it, and pulled up a stool next to him to start working on the stain. “This is exciting, huh?” she asked cheerfully.   Leland shrugged. “I guess, but I don’t think it matters.”   His sister frowned and looked at his face. His complexion matched hers, pale skin littered with freckles, but he had their father’s brown eyes. He looked a lot like their father, actually. “What do you…why do you say that?”   Leland laughed, as if the answer was obvious. “Auntie already said you had to be the next heir, right?”   Frigga shrugged, rubbing forcefully at his shirt sleeve, checked to see if she was making any progress, and winced slightly because there was absolutely no change at all. “Sure, but that doesn’t mean anything at all. Magic isn’t just for coven work, my magic helps me too!”   Leland rolled his eyes. “But auntie is going to make me study more. I already get so bored. It’s borrrring!”   The stain wasn’t coming out. Frigga scowled at it, her nose wrinkling in frustration. “Yes, it can be. But,” she paused and looked at her brother, a mischievous smile on her glossed lips, “there’s lots of things that make it fun. Want to see?”   Her brother grinned and nodded furiously. Frigga sat up and looked around the room for inspiration. It was a small room, painted soft pink with white crown moulding, shiny marble tiles, and wall-length mirrors. There was also a large painting in an ornate hardwood frame hung on the wall behind the pink velvet chaise Leland was perched on. The painting was of a woodland scene. Someone had fallen asleep in a pasture and was surrounded by all sorts of small animals. It was perfect. Frigga focussed in on a small rabbit in the front of the painting, pointed a finger at it, and released a soft burst of energy at the painting.   It impacted, bursting like fireworks, and suddenly the rabbit began to animate, jumping out of the painting and around the room leaving footprints of blue sparkling light behind it. Leland shrieked with laughter, and Frigga couldn’t help but smile at the boy’s reaction. She pulled a few other creatures from the painting, a bird, a mouse, had them join the rabbit in running around the room and under the chairs, one even hopped into Leland’s lap. His eyes were huge with wonder, and when he went to pet the rabbit, it and the other animated creatures dissolved into white light, reappearing back in their original spots in the painting.   Leland burst into applause, and Frigga nodded in a smug bow. “Why thank you, sir!”   “Cool! Why don’t you do that all the time?”   “There isn’t a lot of practical uses for this kind of illusion, but sometimes if I can’t sleep, I animate a few of the angels on my ceiling to dance for me.”   “You think I can do it too?”   Frigga nodded, picking the rag back up to half-heartedly wipe at the boy’s mussed up face. At least that was coming out though it still left a small tint of blue behind. “I think you can do anything you want, Lee.”   He looked down to where she had scrubbed at his shirt. “You can’t use magic to clean it?”   Frigga sighed in frustration as she finished wiping his face and started at his hair. “No, you can’t clean magic stains out with magic. Or anything it seems. I think you’ve gone and changed the colour of the fabric itself, but I don’t want to mess with it until you’re not wearing it anymore.” She grinned and leaned in close, as if to tell a secret. Leland mirrored her. She whispered, “Wouldn’t want to accidentally explode you.”   Leland cackled. “I don’t think you can do that, Frigg!”   She crossed her arms, a brow raised comically high. “Oh, you don’t do you?”   Leland rigorously shook his head. “Nope!”   “I think I could!”   “Nu-uh!”   “Uh-huh!”   And they had about ten rounds of “nu-uh” and “yeah-huh” before dissolving into a fit of giggles. Frigga knew she was going to be missed if they were gone much longer, but it was nice to spend time with her brother away from it all. And honestly? It was nice to escape from all the social chess she’d had to play all evening. When the siblings calmed down, Frigga sighed. “I think we should be getting back.”   Leland groaned. “It’s boring, though.”   Frigga smiled sympathetically as she stood to hang the rag on a nearby towel rack. “Yes, it is.”   “Isn’t it your party?”   “It’s still boring. And stressful. Just be thankful you don’t have to deal with coven stuff.”   “Why?”   Frigga thought for a way to phrase her complaint that wouldn’t turn him away from magical practice generally. “I love our members, of course I do. And the magic we do is so much more powerful than any one of us can do on our own… But I’m not fond of all the social duties that come along with it, let’s say that.”   Leland nodded solemnly. “Yeah. Do you think Gertrude will make me a cake when we get home?”   Frigga chuckled as she held her hand out for Leland, offering to help him from his seat. “Maybe. Like a birthday cake?”   Leland took her hand and jumped up from his seat. “Yeah, but for magic-day.”   Frigga took a deep breath, steeling herself against the thought of returning to the party. But her chest softened with a thought. “I think I know someone that could do that for you, Leland.”

Blood and Thorns - Chapter 11
Chapter 11: Poetry and Pining (Read Chapter 1 (part one) here) - (See here for a complete list of chapters) **Updated May 2nd with a new location
**Content warning for this segment: Sexual Content
For a full week following their mother’s trial, Rosalind had been confined to their library entirely. There was so much to do and many affairs to arrange. It made their head spin and they wanted more than anything to escape the mountain of paperwork requiring their attention. They had been frequenting the Magnus-Monroe mansion to escape the endless drama, but in the week following the trial, sneaking away had been made impossible. It seemed like everyone needed them for something.   Everything will ease up after the ceremony, they told themself. It can’t be much worse than this, and everything will calm down afterwards. Rosalind had been raised for this, and the newfound responsibility suited their detached demeanour. They weren’t usually one to let stress get to them, but this was on another level, and it had been mostly unexpected. On top of the ceremony, there was also the matter of their mother’s fate to weigh on their mind. Without Rosalind’s assistance, the investigation would have had very little solid evidence, so the fact they’d let the Blackwoods in and shown them exactly where to search? They didn’t regret their actions but while Rosalind didn’t have what one might call a loving relationship with her, they still felt a weight of responsibility as the one to have sealed their mother’s fate.   They’d try and visit father’s grave sometime this week, it’d been a while.
There was also the matter of their family’s estate affairs and reputation. It didn’t escape Rosalind that their contribution to the hearing could be misconstrued to be seen as their attempt to gain power early. Whether or not it was their intention, it was how the situation had squared up. The fact was the Bloodswell family was known, now infamously, for their drive for power, and it stared them in the face. The drive had skipped Rosalind, it seemed. Those suspicions would have to be addressed after the ceremony. For now they’d numb it with tea, though gods knew they’d been tempted to dip into the family’s saké stores, even with the guaranteed hangover.   Oh gods above, they’d have to socialize. Rosalind was not fond of the idea, but for the sake of the Bloodswell family and their own reputation, it was vital to play the game for a bit. As little as possible. Regardless, it was Rosalind’s time to take up their new position as head of the family, an eventuality realized far too soon for their comfort.   A week after the trial, Rosalind was shut in their library when a servant knocked on the door. They had been at it for a few hours and were deep in their work, so an interruption wasn’t welcome. Until they saw their visitor. The servant led him in and to Rosalind’s relief, it was Marcus.   They had become strange friends over the last few weeks. During Rosalind’s visits to the library, Marcus would join them if he was in, which he always was. His father usually brought him along to important coven or estate business, but lately Marcus would escape to favour his visits with Rosalind. The two of them would have tea and conversation, maybe exchange a few flirtations, who’s to say really. It was harmless, the man was engaged and probably not interested anyway. Besides, Marcus was not famous for being interested in non-men, regardless of his fiancé, so a goodnatured compliment or a soft brush of shoulders was merely some fun, Rosalind argued.   Argued. With themself.   But when Marcus walked through their library’s door, Rosalind felt nothing but sweet relief, like a weight had been lifted off their shoulders, like they’d been shut underground for years and was finally seeing the sun.   It was more like Marcus skipped through the door, excited he’d actually been allowed in. “Hey Sir Bloodswell,” he teased as Rosalind stood to greet their friend, linking hands. “Or, would it be ‘sir’? I guess not, huh.”   Rosalind smiled, squeezing Marcus’ outstretched hands fondly. Gods it was refreshing to see somebody they didn’t have authority over. “I’ll have to settle on a proper title soon. It’s good to see you, my friend. You’ve no idea.” They bade Marcus come and sit down in the chair next to theirs.   Marcus happily plopped down next to Rosalind. “Yeah, of course. I missed you coming over, gods everything is incredibly dull without you!”   Rosalind’s ears flushed a little at the flattery. “Yes, how dare I be responsible for my family’s affairs? Shame on me.”   Marcus laughed, and Rosalind was struck by the man’s smile. He was beautiful in an unconventional way. Angular, but soft; feminine, and yet still distinctly a man. The two of them were complete opposites, in aesthetic and personality, but Rosalind was comforted by Marcus’ utter lack of reliance on them. It was refreshing to talk to someone like a person and not like they were playing a game of chess. Marcus didn’t need yet another acquaintance, his family was involved in almost every business and social circle in Honeyshore, and he’d already gone without their company for years. Yet he still chose to spend time with them, and there was no one else Rosalind had missed more this last week.   They conversed easily for a while, a servant serving tea and light refreshments a few minutes into the visit. Marcus complained about his own duties and let Rosalind vent about their new responsibilities. They managed to avoid the topic of Victoria Bloodswell for quite a while until Marcus brought up the last week’s meeting about an hour into the visit.   “I wanted to say,” he started tentatively, “and you don’t have to talk about this but I just wanted to say, about last week,” one of Rosalind’s brows raised, “I thought it was incredible how you handled that whole ‘your mom’s a traitor’ thing. Sorry, I know, sore topic but I think you looked so… regal.”   Rosalind looked at the documents on the table, gathering their thoughts. Regal, huh they thought to themself. “I was merely doing what was right,” they replied softly with a shrug.   Marcus put a hand on Rosalind’s fondly, earning back their gaze. “Yeah, I know you want to appear like you don’t give a shit and trust me, it’s a good look,” they both chuckled. “But you handled it with honour and dignity. You were beautiful.”   Rosalind was taken aback. How does one respond to that? And why was Marcus’ hand on their’s such a distraction, hadn’t they gotten over this yet? They decided to try and lighten the sudden serious mood that fell over the two of them, attempt to steer the conversation away from their mother. “It seems my reward for that good deed is mountains of documents that won’t actually matter in a year, as well as all the migraines they’ve gifted me.” A look of sudden worry flashed across Marcus’s face. Oops. “Not right now, just generally,” they added hastily and motioned towards the documents with a vague gesture.   Marcus looked at the piles with an uneasy smile. “Maybe I could do something to help?”   Rosalind shook their head, painfully aware of Marcus’ hand still on theirs. “No, it’s all my burden to bare, I’m afraid. But you know what would improve my mood?”   Marcus’ face lit up. “What’s that?”   “Why don’t you read me something?” Rosalind rose and walked to the book shelf. “I haven’t been able to pick up a book in a week, if I look at more paper I feel like I’ll die.”   Marcus laughed in reply, and he moved to the other side of the table to sit on a simple bench closer to the bookshelves. “You’d think that’d help you with your necromancy but you already look dead so sure, why not?”   Rosalind chuckled softly, trying to hide it, and picked up an old volume from the shelf. They were paler than usual it was true, but for their pride’s sake they’d demand penance. “That’s just rude, sir.” They took a seat next to Marcus on the bench he was sitting on, shoulders brushing together. “Read me something exceptional, poetic genius, and I’ll exonerate you.”   Marcus smirked as he received the book and thumbed through it. “Hm, yeah.” He paused, contemplating his choices, an index finger on his lip. Rosalind tried to fix their eyes on Marcus’s, but their gaze kept coming back to and lingering on the finger at his lips.   And their heart skipped a beat. And then another.   Marcus’s pensive face lit up in a lighthearted grin. “Here, this is actually one of my favourites!”   He began reading, and Rosalind’s fate was sealed. The peaks and lulls in Marcus’ voice entranced them, and if Rosalind had wanted to leave this visit with their little secret intact, then asking Marcus to read had been a mistake, perhaps the biggest mistake they’d ever made.
When, in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope
 With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
(Like to the lark at break of day arising
 From sullen earth) sings hymns at heaven’s gate;
For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings
As Marcus’ voice sang out the verse, Rosalind’s gaze was captive to his lips, their breath stolen away. The way they moved had Rosalind charmed, and they couldn’t remove their gaze. They barely heard the man speaking, instead their mind was far away, imagining against all their judgement what those lips might feel like, taste like, what they might be capable of. It wasn’t like Rosalind to let their imagination run wild, but with their lack of sleep? Hardly surprising.   What was surprising, however, was the man had stopped talking altogether a full minute previous and Rosalind had been caught staring longingly at his lips.   A flush spread across their own complexion as they realized their mistake and as they realized they’d been caught. Rosalind froze, horrified. Their face burned crimson with humiliation, their heart rate quickened, but they refused to meet Marcus’ gaze. Instead, they ripped their own away and looked down to the floor. He’d been looking back at them for what felt like an eternity and didn’t look away when Rosalind did. Shoulder to shoulder, Rosalind felt Marcus shift slightly, as if he was leaning in towards them.   But Rosalind stood up quickly, inwardly cursing at themself, and stepped to the window a few paces behind their armchair. How stupid could they be? This man was engaged to the coven’s heir, what were they thinking, staring at him like this? How obvious was that? How desperate must they be? A blind man could see that pathetic display and while Marcus wasn’t a genius, he wasn’t stupid. There was absolutely no possible way this would result in anything other than humiliation, of that Rosalind was sure. Fuck, they were already humiliated, and it was nobody’s fault but their own.   They stood in front of the window, their back to Marcus, struggling to gain composure, to keep embarrassment at bay. They dared not look back. Maybe they could change the subject, pretend to have a headache or something, there was still a chance to pretend that didn’t just happen. Every second of silence was making it worse and, despite all of Rosalind’s intelligence, their frantic attempt at finding a sensible excuse was coming up empty.   They heard footsteps; Marcus was walking over to them. Rosalind’s shoulders tightened, they shut their eyes. He stood just behind them, and his soft voice melted the witch’s resolve. “Rosalind?” He sounded… they didn’t know how he sounded, feeling his body’s heat and smelling the man’s cologne had stunted their thoughts altogether. Woody and earthy, a hint of some exotic spice floating on its edges. They knew it well. Rosalind hated that they knew it so well; it always made their body warm, their breath falter, and their heart flutter.   Rosalind tried to form an answer, tried to think a solid thought at all, but their struggle flew out the window when they felt Marcus’ hand tug at their arm, asking them to turn around. They did, eyes cemented to the floor, desperate to avoid facing their mistake. They’d shown weakness, they’d shown a crack in their resolve, their feelings had been plain and Rosalind was embarrassed. They’d kept this secret for so long and one simple, idiotic mistake had been their undoing.   Before Rosalind could say anything, Marcus pressed his lips to theirs, his hand still resting on their arm. Rosalind’s mind went blank with shock. They breathed him in, weakly moaned, and placed their trembling hand on his cheek. When Marcus deepened the embrace by wrapping both arms around their waist, Rosalind slid an arm over his shoulder, pulling him closer. The pair stepped back a half-step, pinning Rosalind between the man and the window and they pressed their body tightly to his. Marcus was warm and astonishingly soft, just as Rosalind had always imagined.   He gripped their waist firmly, the action almost felt possessive, like he was confident in this decision, like he’d decided before all this started that they were his. They were all his, but how could he have known that before their amateurish mistake? Marcus bit at their lips hungrily, and it was all Rosalind could do to grab at his lapels, trying to anchor themself from getting swept away.   A rumble of satisfaction sounded from Marcus’ chest, and Rosalind really could have died from happiness at any point.   They continued to kiss and touch, not saying a word opting instead to use their lips to much better purpose. The two of them lost all sense of the world around them, or rather, they became the world to each other. But Rosalind pulled back hesitantly after a few moments, one arm wrapped over Marcus’ shoulder, the other hand gripping his shirt. This was wrong, they reminded themself of all the reasons they’d kept themself from expressing their feelings for him for all those years, not least of which being that he was still fucking engaged to their coven’s heir. They shakily released his shirt collar, suddenly overcome with hesitation and doubt.   But he didn’t move away. Rosalind met his gaze. Their heart stopped, Marcus seemed nervous, hopeful, his cheeks were flushed and he was looking at them like they were about to put a curse on him. Their stomach churned as they realized that he thought they were going to push him away.   Rosalind did not want to push him away. This was a bad idea, they knew there could be serious consequences, consequences they’d spent years heeding. Their hands rested on him, shaking almost imperceptibly. Gods, they just fucking wanted this man, and Rosalind couldn’t find it within themself to hold back anymore. Maybe they would face consequences, but they’d loved this man so much for so long and, if they were going to do this, they were going all-in. Rosalind looked back up into Marcus’ eyes, their own flashed with new resolve.   Fuck it.   Rosalind flung their arms around his shoulders and tugged Marcus back in. This time the intensity of their embrace dominated every touch, every movement, every inch of them. They weren’t going to hold back or smother their desire for him anymore.   He smiled into their kisses, his every touch as hungry as their own. Marcus kept his arms around Rosalind’s waist, and when they reclined against the window pane, Marcus pressed a leg between theirs, taking the opportunity to get as close as possible. When they gasped slightly it seemed to send Marcus into a frenzy and he began trailing kisses over their jaw down to their neck. Rosalind swore quietly as Marcus nipped at them. They knew this would only end one way and they didn’t care. A hand went from Marcus’ shoulder to his hair, pulling gently but decidedly, earning a particularly potent bite and a deep moan from the man. Rosalind’s head fell back a bit with a soft moan of their own and exposed more of their neck for Marcus. An arm remained at their waist, the other hand trailed downwards, down Rosalind’s sides, gripping at their hip. Their breath began faltering, becoming ragged, and they pressed into Marcus’ touch.   Their body was warming and tingling, and while they were doing their best to keep quiet, Rosalind couldn’t help the gasps and soft moans. His teeth on their neck and the press of his body to theirs overrode their ability to make decisions. They let their instincts make those decisions for them and before they could question it, their legs were wrapped around him, their hands were wrapped in his long tresses, and through fabric they felt that Marcus was just as excited by all this as they were.   “Ros,” he said with a deep, rough tone. “Rosalind, I… can I-”   “Yes,” They cut Marcus off. His widened eyes met theirs. It made Rosalind grin wickedly, an expression they rarely affected. If he was surprised by this modicum of enthusiasm, he’d be getting the surprise of his life if this continued. “Unless you’d like to stop.”   The look on Marcus’ face sent a shiver down their spine. It was the look of a man who’d just made a decision that would change their life. He lured them away from the window, tugging them towards the chaise lounge by the empty fireplace. “I wanna make you feel amazing,” he murmured as they stood by the chaise. He ran his hands up their arms to their tie and loosened it, granting him more access to the witch’s neck.   Rosalind wanted to reply but couldn’t because he was kissing them again, so they nodded into the kiss. Marcus gently but decisively pushed them down onto the chaise, but hesitated to follow for a breath. He looked them over, admiring the fruits of his labour most likely, so they took a breath to do the same.   They finally allowed themself to entertain the thought they’d had the first time they’d met after returning home all those years ago without smothering it: He was so beautiful, it broke Rosalind’s heart, and here he was looking at them as if they were responsible for directing the moon’s phases.   But then he followed them down, climbing on top of them and reunited their lips. They wrapped themself around Marcus again. Oh gods above and below did they want this, they’d ached for this so much for so long. Marcus smelled divine and was wonderfully warm on top of them, but they wanted more.   Their hands reached to Marcus’ shirt, unbuttoning it quickly, not ceasing their impassioned kiss. As it came apart, Rosalind slipped their cool hands under the fabric and ghosted over the exposed skin, lightly scratching at it. Marcus shivered softly, nipping at Rosalind’s bottom lip. He wasn’t strong or particularly well-built by any means, but that didn’t matter to them. All that mattered was him, the beautiful man on top of them, and Rosalind knew right then they wanted more from Marcus than they had ever allowed themself to acknowledge.   Marcus’ hands wandered down Rosalind’s torso to their belt. At his touch, their hips jerked, moving to meet him. Marcus smirked, their lips still fastened together, and moved to Rosalind’s shirt buttons. They instinctively reacted, seizing his hands to pull them away. They hated themself for it, especially when Marcus lifted away to see what was wrong, but Rosalind wasn’t ready for that. They were already feeling so vulnerable, and by the gods, they wanted him and wanted to share everything with him, but they just couldn’t yet. “I-I’d like to keep that,” they whispered tensely. “I’m sorry.”   Marcus nodded with a fond smile, unbothered. “Don’t apologize. I want you to be comfortable.”   The panic in Rosalind’s gut settled, relieved they hadn’t just ruined the moment. “You’ve made me incredibly comfortable,” they slyly teased.   Their heart fluttered when he leaned in again, pressing a kiss to their jawline.   “I’d like to think there’s room for improvement,” he murmured as a hand stole to their pant fastenings and slipped a finger under the waistline, but he made no further move, “If you’d like.”   Rosalind met that touch with enthusiasm, their hands returning to his chest to pull at his shirt collar. “Marcus, fucking yes.”   Marcus’ lips were immediately back on Rosalind’s neck, his hands furiously undoing pant fasteners and pulling them down. He trailed kisses down Rosalind’s slender body, avoiding the area they’d been sensitive about, his hands gripped at their hips. Marcus knelt on the floor in front of the chaise and brought those hips to the edge of the seat. He pressed kisses into Rosalind’s thighs, lightly scratched down Rosalind’s sides. They gasped and melted into the chaise, unable to hold themself up anymore. It was too much for Rosalind to process, and their hands found a new home in Marcus’ hair, pulling softly. “Fuck, you’re beautiful, oh my gods,” he prayed, murmuring against their skin.   Rosalind glanced down at the man nestled between their legs, not knowing what to say. But the look on his face implied there was no reply needed. He was looking over them, mouthing at them as if Rosalind was the most delicious dessert he’d ever come across and he was starving. Marcus pressed another kiss into their thigh, his face near to Rosalind’s centre. His eyes met theirs one more time, looking for permission while a finger curled around the waistband of Rosalind’s underwear.   They nodded, lifting their hips slightly, and off it came. The pain of vulnerability Rosalind felt was held at bay by the heat in Marcus’ eyes. He wrapped one arm under and around their thigh steadying them, his other hand reaching up to Rosalind’s slit, thumb gently stroking the outer lips. Rosalind’s mind was screaming, they hadn’t really been able to believe this was actually happening but they sure as hell could now. By no means was Rosalind unpracticed in sex, but there was very few times they could recall just a simple brush of fingers being so electric, so erotic, their vulva pulsed in anticipation.   He gently moved his index finger, parting their folds, and, holy hell, they were slick. They squirmed at the sensation, it was light and teasing and entirely on purpose. He was enjoying seeing Rosalind squirm, that much was clear, so they pulled at his hair, silently begging him for more.   “How do you want this, Ros?” Marcus asked, still gently teasing their labia and ghosting a thumb against their clit.   They groaned lightly. It was exquisite agony being touched in this way by this man. It had been so long since they allowed anyone near them, they’d almost forgotten how they liked this. Almost. It didn’t matter what he did at this point, Rosalind just wanted him any way he’d have them, but the man was waiting on an answer. “Softly to start, harder later on.”   “Gentle first and then rougher?”   “Yes.”   “Can I…go in? Would you be alright with that?”   Rosalind held in a whine, although barely. “Fuck, yes.” He could go in with anything he wanted, honestly, they were his to do with what he wanted at this point.   He didn’t seem to have any patience left with the way he started lapping at their clit, it was soft but eager in a way that shocked Rosalind. Their mind went white, eyes rolled back, their hips instinctively raised to allow Marcus as much access as possible. It was unfathomable, the man had clearly done more reading than just poetry. They made a mental note to ask him about that later but no talking right now. They couldn’t even if they wanted to.   True to Rosalind’s request, Marcus was torturously gentle to start, but as signs pointed to his partner getting impatient and desperate, he piled on the pressure, taking their clit between his lips and pulling gently. A broken gasp escaped the witch and their thighs tensed around Marcus’ shoulders. He chuckled and teased them, “Looks like I’ll keep that little move on standby. Thought you said you wanted gentle?” but he thankfully did not stop what he was doing.   Rosalind groaned, close to their finish, but their body ached for more. They’d been utterly ravaged by pleasure, had already abandoned their sense of pride, but they just wanted more of him. Marcus seemed to have been enjoying himself so much that he might have forgotten there was more ways of driving them to insanity than this. “M-Marcus,” Rosalind stuttered, enjoying his quizzical hum in reply. “Can you use… fuck, can you use your fingers?”   He didn’t answer, remaining preoccupied with stimulating Rosalind’s clitoris with his tongue. He flashed a look up to them, mischievous and cocky. He was teasing them again and Rosalind really didn’t have patience or pride enough for it.   “Please,” they begged.   He’d gotten what he wanted, the look melting from mischievous to indulgent, and he shifted slightly. “I wish I could have this as a picture for later,” he breathed as he ran a digit between the folds of their entrance. “You’re sublime.”   They were pretty sure they were already flushed, but Rosalind’s flush deepened at the compliment. They covered their eyes with a palm, softly chuckling. “I’d be pleased to refresh your memory, if you have the need,” they flirted, somehow managing to sound coherent.   Rosalind heard him snicker as he ran two of his fingers through their wetness. “How generous, I’m going to take you up on that for sure,” he flirted back before pressing in with just his index and accompanying the new sensation with a rough tug at their clit.   The sound Rosalind made would have normally been humiliating; they abandoned their volume control and cried out in a slew of curses and prayers to their family’s guardians they were pretty sure Marcus would have no idea of. They’d prayed for years that their feelings would fade away, and for years their prayers had gone unanswered. They’d never been so grateful. Rosalind’s breathing was haggard, their lips were parted, and their hips pressed into Marcus’ touch, begging him to go deeper, spasming lightly. When he crooked his index finger, stimulating the front wall within, another moan escaped Rosalind’s lips followed by Marcus’ name.   He seemed to enjoy that, they heard him moan from the floor and mutter, “You sound like a fucking angel.”   Rosalind let out a breathy pant. “Marcus, I-I’m really fucking close, holy hell. Please don’t stop whatever you’re doing, don’t stop.”   He didn’t, he kept at it as if it were the only thing left in the world to do. How the fuck was he so good at this? Marcus added his second finger a few breaths later, something in Rosalind’s mind released, his name becoming a rhythm on their lips, over and over, which moved without their direction or intervention. Marcus was exquisite inside them, and if this was a fever dream, Rosalind did not want that fever to break. How many times had this exact fantasy plagued them at night? How many times had they wondered what this would be like? Countless. No, if it was some kind of delusion, Rosalind wanted nothing to do with ending it.   Another minute of Marcus gently stroking Rosalind’s front walls and his tongue attacking their clit without mercy, and Rosalind met their end with a gasp. They clenched around Marcus’ fingers which slowed but did not stop, stroking them through their orgasm. Their mind went silent, their body stiffened, but soon enough, Rosalind’s body relaxed and they slumped slightly, the tension leaving their body. It was at this point Marcus withdrew his fingers, gave each thigh one last kiss, and made his way to sit next to Rosalind. They looked at him through heavy lids and their hands slid from Marcus’ hair to rest on themself. They were still speechless and breathing heavily, but their exhausted face wore a bewildered smirk.   They took a second to consider how they’d ended up here, how they’d gone from talking about their tedious responsibilities to having Marcus’ fingers inside them. They still weren’t quite sure how it had happened, but they’d meditate on it later. Marcus placed a chaste kiss on their cheek, but Rosalind pulled him in for a deep kiss instead. They were never going to get enough of him, and they were pretty sure Marcus didn’t mind, not with the obvious erection he was hosting. The kiss was slow and thick like honey, all the sweeter for tasting themself on his lips. Rosalind meekly brought a hand to Marcus’ cheek and said the only thing they could think of, “Marcus, holy fuck.”   He chuckled in response. “Yeah, you too.”   “I didn’t do anything. You worked me over like a fucking piano. What the hell.”   He chuckled softly, and Rosalind saw he wanted another kiss, but they needed to sit up first. They shifted, letting him settle a bit, and rested their hands on his chest before granting him the kiss he’d wanted. He was being so sweet despite his arousal, the man must have been uncomfortable. A thrill sent up Rosalind’s spine as they started trailing their hand downward, and the witch couldn’t help the wicked smile when he swallowed dryly.   He looked unsure what to do next, as if he was uncomfortable asking something of them, so Rosalind would make their enthusiasm plain. They grabbed at his jaw with one hand, brushed the other against his cock through his trousers, and captured his gasp with their lips.   His hips subtly bucked up and he whined,  “Fuck, Ros, it’s not gonna take much, but y-you don’t have to, I just wanted you to feel good.”   They laughed softly, biting their lip with a sly smile. “I feel fucking great.” Rosalind then shoved Marcus down where he’d laid them earlier. It caught the man by surprise, seeing this sudden shift from them, but Rosalind wasn’t going to let him think they’d be doing this with any hint of disinclination.   His erection throbbed beneath their hand. Seemed like he’d received the message.   Rosalind undid Marcus’ pant fasteners and tugged down, peering up for consent. He nodded, his hands reaching to touch any part of Rosalind within reach, resting at their waist. They freed his cock, and it was clearly a relief. It was already so hard and wet, and much different than what they’d handled before. “You’ll have to forgive me,” Rosalind smirked apologetically, their volume low. “This is somewhat new territory.”   He looked surprised but not disappointed. “Do you want me to show you?” Marcus offered. “I told you, I’m already so close, gods Ros, I’m gonna explode from just you touching me.”   Rosalind nodded, and Marcus took their hand in his. He treated it reverently, brought it to his lips, placing a tender kiss on their knuckles, and Rosalind’s heart skipped several beats.   When they did touch his cock, tentatively wrapping around him, he bucked up into their grip. He was so stiff, so hot in contrast to their cooled fingers. Marcus used his other hand to tug Rosalind down for another kiss and then moved his hand on top of theirs, showing them the grip and speed that felt best. Rosalind was a quick learner and this task was simple enough. Their other hand rested on Marcus’ chest pressing short, black-painted nails into the skin softly. They’d noticed how much he enjoyed that earlier.   He had been right, it hadn’t taken much. Rosalind was grateful for that because it had been so long since they’d done this, they didn’t want to keep the man waiting due to their lack of experience. When Marcus was pushed over the edge, the witch smiled into their kisses and eased their hand’s movement. He was moaning and gasping, and Rosalind wasn’t sure who had enjoyed that more. They almost lost their balance when he pulled them into his lap, urging them to lie down on top, but they didn’t need to be told twice; Rosalind was delighted to be held, happy to have something stable to anchor themself to, and they rested their head on the man’s shoulder.   How… how had this come about? Their mind had gone silent in their pleasure, but it was coming back to life, much to their annoyance. They tried to enjoy the comfortable silence, to enjoy Marcus’ hand at their waist and the way his exposed skin felt on theirs. They tried letting their breath even out for a few moments, to appreciate their own scent intermingling with his, but an uncomfortable realization crept in.   “Uh, Marcus.”   “Hmm?”   “We’re in the library.”   “Oh yeah.”   They both shifted and sat up, surveying the absolute mess they’d made of each other; Rosalind’s neck was covered in bruises, and their usually sleek, straight hair was fluffy, Marcus’ shirt unbuttoned and very wrinkled.  Marcus laughed, embarrassed. “I’m sure glad nobody else uses this room, huh?”   Rosalind glanced to the window and said a silent prayer of gratitude that Marcus had moved them away. They hadn’t even thought about it. They felt a twinge of embarrassment, how could they have gotten wrapped up so quickly? And how long had they been at it? They looked for a clock and saw it had been about two hours since Marcus had arrived at the manor, and they had expected to leave for some minor to-dos in town around this time. It’d be fine if they were late for once, they supposed.   Or didn’t show up at all.   “Can I ask a question?” Rosalind asked as they shifted to pick up their abandoned clothing. They both started putting themselves back together.   “What’s up?”   “Where… where did you learn that? I’m astonished you were familiar with this, um, configuration at all.”   Marcus burst out laughing, doing up the last of the buttons on his shirt, but then undid the top one again and reclined on the chaise. “Yeah, I guess it’s shocking huh. People like to assume my interests, I guess.” Sitting up on the chaise, fully dressed, he motioned for Rosalind to join him so he could fix their tie. Marcus had made an utter disaster of Rosalind, but they didn’t mind at all.   “Sorry, I didn’t mean to,” Rosalind replied, sinking onto the seat, allowing Marcus to tie their tie for them. “People talk, and I try to ignore it, but you…”   “It’s an easy assumption to make, I wear women’s blouses regularly for goodness sake.” Marcus didn’t take himself too seriously, and it was one of his best features. “And I wear a little bit too much pink for people to take me seriously when I say I’m interested in all kinds of people, not just men, but I saw a girl for a while a few years back.”   Rosalind raised an eyebrow. “Really? Why don’t I remember? Wouldn’t people talk about something like that?”   Marcus shrugged. “You might have been at school. I was sixteen, I think. Maybe everyone thought I was in denial or something, figured it wouldn’t last. But it’s not my fault she moved out of the country and I had to go to school.” He sighed wistfully.   “I’m sorry, that must have been difficult.”   “My turn to ask a question,” Marcus grinned, and Rosalind felt a slight knot curling in their stomach. They knew that mischievous look well. “Was that your first time with a man?”   Rosalind thought about their answer because it was somewhat complicated. Well, it wasn’t. “Yes,” they admitted. “I…don’t have much experience in general, but…Sorry, was it obvious?” They winced slightly.   Marcus shook his head, his hand cupping their cheek, and kissed their forehead. “No, not at all. You said you weren’t familiar, and I was surprised.” They shifted and they tried to reel in their self-consciousness. Marcus pressed his forehead to theirs. “You were perfection itself,” he affirmed softly, earning a gentle smile from Rosalind who leaned into Marcus’ palm.   “That’s high praise.”   “You deserve it.” Rosalind closed their eyes, enjoying the closeness. They could have cried, when was the last time they had been vulnerable with anyone? They couldn’t remember, so it being Marcus of all people, the man they’d pined after for years, the man who could have anyone he wanted, the man who was so sweet he might as well be an angel? They were having a hard time believing this was real, even now.   “Rosalind?” He prompted quietly.   “Mm?” They opened their deep, brown eyes and looked into Marcus’ greys.   He’d become serious, though not grave, and Rosalind felt like they were seeing his walls come down too.   He took a breath. “I think… I think I’ve wanted you for a while. You’re extraordinary. And fascinating. And wonderful, and I…”   Rosalind nodded softly, lifting their hand to place an index finger on his lips, not only to shush him but also to simply touch. “Me too, for much longer than I care to admit.”   They stayed close, enjoying each other’s presence and warmth. Rosalind felt so exposed, so vulnerable, but here with Marcus they felt safe. They spent their whole life around people who needed their approval and around people who depended upon them; they had no choice but to protect themself using harsh boundaries. Rosalind kept everyone at a distance, so it was a relief to lay their cards out on the table, to be honest for the first time in years.   But, unfortunately, there was an obstacle. Rosalind’s eyes shot back up to Marcus nervously. He tilted his head with confusion as they backed away slightly with a huff, and tension returned to their shoulders. “Now what, Mister Magnus-Monroe? What shall we do about that engagement of yours?”   He bit his lip and his knee started bouncing. “Oh yeah. That.”
