Hehe, I know you all have been waiting for this this~ ANOTHER MIRACULOUS REWIEW, So without stalling let's do this, today I'll be reviewing the Seventh episode of miraculous season 5 Passion

We start of the episode as Marinnete tells alya that she now is in love with a furry, Marinette, I really don’t care about you or your mental state, but seek help pls

For some reason Alya don’t believe that Marinette is in love with cat boy, she points out that Marinette was in love with Adrien just yesterday, ok fair point.

But Marinette points out that being in love with sunshine boy made her lost 15 miraculous, other fair point, but why is Marinette love life the biggest topic now? Shouldn’t it be like idk, GETTING THE MAGICAL JEWELS BACK? WAS IT TO GIVE THE LOVESQUARE SOMETHING TO DO? NO BECAUSE MARINETTE CHANGES HER MIND JUST TWO EPISODES LATER, SO THIS WHOLE DARE I SAY “ARC” IS COMPLETALY POITLESS, no really, what Marinette being in love with Chat Noir influence on the story? It is just a bad excuse for Marinette to be sad in “transmission” NOTHING ELSE, don’t you think it would be a better reason if, idk MARINETTE WAS SAD ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE? Let’s summarize really quick what has happened to her just this season, lost all 15 miraculous, a couple of people lost trust on her (like andre mr damoshit etc,) practically killed monarch (which is a problem cause if he dies they will never find out who he is and the miraculous will be lost forever) and Felix, A black belt in martial arts, a manipulative, power hungry, adult hater, who Marinette has no idea what he can do, and who has the most powerful Miraculous of all time. I THINK THERE’S A BUNCH BETTER REASONS TO MAKE MARINETTE SAD, BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LETS GO WITH SHE GOT REJECTED BY HER CRUSH, I’m gonna need therapy after watch this aren’t I?

Marinette: loving Chat Noir IS a good idea, Chat Noir is cute, very handsome, super competent, doesn’t even annoy me anymore, and turns out he is really cool, and on top of that he’s in love with me so it’s perfect!

Mari about the “super competent” thing… I got some bad news for you.

Also, if Marinette fell in love with clChat because of that, WHY DIDN’T SHE DID THIS BEFOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Do you guys realize how out of nowhere this is??

The scene cuts to Adrien and… wait are those PAJAMAS?

WHO ARE THOSE PEOPLE AND WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO THE ANIMATORS??? YOU CAN’T TRICK ME, THE REAL ANIMATORES NEVER WOULD PUT MONEY ON A LITTLE DETAIL THAT BRINGS MORE IMMERSION INTO THE STORY

Then there’s 30 seconds long scene of Adrien simping over marinette, and Plagg asks why isn’t he simping over Ladybug, Adrien then tells Plagg that if Ladybub don’t want to be with him than he is gonna flirt with someone else, nice try writers, but after season 4 you just CAN’T make me like this Character again. Also, one episode after we find out that Ladybug is actually blind Adrien don’t want her anymore? That's racist

Adrien then goes to the kitchen where Gabriel was making pancakes, Nathalie freaks out for some reason and they start arguing but it least like 5 seconds. Nathalie then sits down to eat with Adrien, but he is late to school so he goes get his backpack.

But then A DISABLED PERSON ATACKS GABRIEL AND IS ABLE TO IMMOBILIZE HIM.

WOW! WHAT A SCARY VILLAIN!

Nathalie talks a little how Gabriel lost himself, that he was doing it for love but now he is just crazy bla bla bla

But Gabriel tells Nathalie that they two are going to die if he doesn’t do anything, which is a good motivation for a villain they both are gonna die, and Adrien will be alone. That’s actually pretty good, a point for you writers.

Adrien: did you see the ring Nathalie is wearing? I’m glad she and my dad are getting along so well,

Adrien: a ring! How about I give a ring to marinette?

Plagg: ugh don’t tell me you’re gonna propose to her

Adrien: that would be over reacting.

Adrien, did you even hear yourself? YOU MEET A GIRL AND FELL IN LOVE WITH HER IN THE SAME DAY (origins part one and two) IF THIS ISN’T OVER REACTING, THEN I AM NOT A PV SIMP.

The scene then cuts to Nathalie whining about Gabriel, and then she opens a safe and takes a cell phone out of it? like I understand that the videos were supposed to be a secret but OMG WOMAN, PUT THEM IN A PENDRIVE, CELLPHONES ARE EXPENCIVE.

Video of Emelie: I’m counting on you Nathalie, I know it won’t be easy to convince him to stop chasing after the miraculous, but you have to, for Adrien

Nathalie: I’m sorry, I failed you...

No, you didn’t, BECAUSE YOU DIDN’T EVEN TRIED, SINCE SEASON 2 ALL NATHALIE DID WAS ENCORAGE GABRIEL TO KEEP THIS UP, THIS WAS THE FIRST EPISODE THAT SHE SAIS FOR HIM TO STOP, SO DON’T COME AROUND WITH THIS BULLSHIT TO ME.

Man, it was it was so much better when her reason to do this was because she was in love with Gabriel. It wasn’t good but AT LEAST IT WAS BETTER THAN SHE DOING THIS BECAUSE SHE’S AN HIPOCRITE

Adrien then shows up, see that Nathalie was clearly crying, asks if everything’s ok, she says yes, and he completely accepts it and asks advice for his love life, what a good stepson!

Adrien asks if he should write a poem to Marinette but Nathalie just gives some exposition about her backstory and kick him out of her room

Apparently, Nathalie Gabriel and Emelie hunted artifacts around the world which sucks? Like a lot? Like It was foreshadowed before that Gabriel worked with this stuff (Shanghai special) but like, they three never showed any fight skills, AND gabriel or Nathalie don’t have any magical artifact outside of the miraculous, so w h a t ?

The scene then cuts to Gabriel talking to his dead wife for the million time and NATHALIE SHOWS UP TO HELP HIM? W H A T???????? WHY?

Nathalie then says to Gabriel akumatize her just so the scene cuts to Adrien day on school, because that’s much more interesting

Adrien then runs into marinette, and he tell Mari that Nathalie is dying, and she tells him “Oh don’t worry bout that” and he gets happi and simps for the billion time, ok that’s not exactly what happen but is almost sooooooo

Plagg then tells sugar cube that everything is bad and that if they fall in love they might reveal themselves to each other, like he has a point, Adrien would be stupid enough to do this, and after he did it would take just a bit to marinette do the same, and then the series would end, oh no! what a tragedy!

But Tikki says “no u” and starts saying how of a loser marinette is that she can’t confess to a boy, and that this would never happen.

WASEN’T THIS SUPOSSED TO BE THE OPOSITE??? TIKKI ALL WORIED AND PLAGG JUST CHILLED? PLAGGH ALWAYS SHOWED THAT HE WAS JUST A CHILLED GUY THAT CARED BUT DIDN’T SHOWED OFTEN, HE SHOULD BE CALMING TIKKI DOWN, AND WE WERE SHOWED A MILLION TIMES THAT TIKKI FREAKS ABOUT ANYTHING, JUST LOOK AT PRIME QUEEN, THERE TIKKI FREAKS OUT BOUT MARINETTE ACIDENTLY REVEALING SHE IS LADYBUG, AND DO I NEED TO COMMENT ON CHAT BLANC? TIKKI SAW THAT THEN ADRIEN/CHAT FALLS IN LOVE WITH MARINETTE IT MIGHT LEAD TO THE END OF THE WORLD, DID THEY HEADCANON THAT KWAMIS CAN SEE WHILE TRANSFORMED AGAIN OR SOMETHING??????????

With Nathalie, she asks monarch to give her the power to never miss a shot, also the goat, and somehow she uses the genesis and get the powers of 5 more miraculous, WHICHOUT MONARCH TRANSFERING THEM, W H A T ?

About the desing.

Pretty good! Thought I have some, problems with it, first of all, shorts? Really? Wouldn’t it be a Brazilian time better if they put pants instead??? Also, why the purple skin? Is she still in love with Gabriel or she just like purple? Purple isn’t good for camouflaging; I’m just saying that someone that is a “hunter” should use a less attention caller color pallet. Anyways, I’ll give her a 7.5 Mrs. afton

Safari then creates an illusion of timetagger to distract the heroes, huh clever plan, the class gets an akuma alert.

WHO IS FILMING THIS? WHY IS THE PERSON SO CLOSE TO THE AKUMA? I can’t believe the writers really forgot that he wasn’t real and that there was no way an illusion could film a video.

Marinette: finally! I get to see chat noir again!

Safari then uses her power and uses the venon to track down the two idiotic heroes

Ladybug then in a SERIOUS FIGHT, while fighting an EXTRA HARD AKUMA that they WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO DEFEAT WITHOUT BUNNIX LADYBUG CASUALLY ASKS CHAT NOIR ON A DATE.

Safari then paralyzes ladybug, thank you safari thank you so much, thank you for SHUTING THIS SIMP UP.

Safari tries to paralyze chat but he CATACLYSM A VENON BULLET? WHAT? LIKE I GET THAT THE CHAT MIRACULOUS IS MORE POWERFUL THAN THE BEE BUT, WASEN’T CATACLYSM SUPOSSED TO DESTROY PHYSICAL THINGS ONLY? THAT MAKES THE CATACLYSM OVERPOWERED! WHAT ELSE CAN IT DO?? DESTROY LIQUIDS? DESTROY SOUND? DESTROY AIR? WRITERS, WHAT THE HELL? Just because of that, for the rest of the reveal you shall be called OP-noir

Op-noir then runs off with ladybub on his arms in a pretty neat chase sequence, WHICH IS RUIN BY A BUTT JOKE. Writers, remember that point I gave you? Well, I’m taking that back.

Op-noir realizes that safari was Nathalie and run off to the sewers. There he tries to escape the bullets and realizes that he is about to transform, he then admits that he is just a foolish kitty without ladybug, and then surrounded, and with what he thinks would be his last words before the end of the world, he apologizes to ladybug for not being a good hero, neither a good partner, and says that he failed.

Man like it’s true but- now you’re making me feel bad for salting you, GO GET SOME THERAPY KID.

But really I love this scene, the way chat tries to figure out what to do and still is funny, he talking to ladybug statue about how he’s nothing without her, he acting like a human being after a really long time, and I absolutely loved op-noir “last line” look I always said that I would never change my mind about Adrien being an asshole after the events of season 4 but- this scene alone, made me change my mind, Adrien, I shall give you one more change to prove you are a good character, pls don’t waste that, also pls don’t simp I can’t take it anymor-

Adrien than detransform because apparently “the bullets can only chase after chat noir, and now that he detransformed the bullets stopped” ok kinda makes sense but, what about plagg? Shouldn’t the bullets like, chase plagg or something? Wha?

Adrien makes a plan, if he couldn’t use his miraculous, he could borrow ladybug’s for a while. Like I like when Adrien thinks for himself instead of just being a ladybug puppet but- this plan is pretty dumb, safari could just make the bullets chase mister bug and lady shit instead, WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT OF COURSE THAT NEVER HAPPENS BECAUSE THE PLOT ARMOR IN THIS SHOW JUST ISN’T BIGGER THAN ASTRUC’S EGO SO SAFARI NEVER THINKS OF THIS. Fuck off

Plagg then takes off marinette earrings and for some reason she unfreezes? Whaa? In “evolution” the same thing happened with bunnix and she wasn’t unfrozen, well I can give this a pass, this show was already headcannon by the writer’s multiple time, WHAT I SHALL NOT GIVE A PASS IS THOSE TWO TALKING WITHOUT RECOGNIZING EACH OTHER’S VOICE-

WHAT? THEY ARE LITTERALY ONE WALL APART, THEY SEE EACH OTHER EVERY DAY, MARINETTE KNEW HIS SCHEDULE FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS, ADRIEN CONSIDERES MARINETTE HIS BEST FRIEND EVER, AND THEY JUST, why? Just why? Why do I do this to myself?

Adrien then remembers about Nathalie and asks ladybug why they couldn’t make a wish to create a better world, but ladybug explains that if they do, there will be a price to pay.

AND THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT, ADRIEN BEEING HUMAN, HE CARING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT ISN’T HIS OWN ASS. Ok a couple more of those and I might consider you a good characters Adrian. Adrien? Idk

Also master fu is an idiot, WHY THE HECK DIDN’T YOU EXPLAINED THIS TO HIM? THIS SHOULD BE BASIC, DID YOU REALLY JUST TOLD HIM “Hey man that terrorist over there want u magical balls because they grand wishes Aladdin style” AND THAT’S ALL? W H A T ?

They transform and go fight safari and ladynoir simps… again… I can’t take it anymore… I’M GETTING VACATIONS.

They broke safari’s crossbow but there was nothing inside, so there’s another chase sequence. Where they break every object with her but find nothing.

Mister bug then uses his lucky charm getting a bottle of perfume which leads them to the Agreste Mansion.

Mister bug then purify the akuma and fixes the city. They then part waste and the scene cuts to marinette talking to alya, and she starts simping over mister bug…. That’s it all confirmed my vacation are next month, I’m gonna go to liberty.

The scene then cuts (THANK GOD) to Nathalie Adrien talking, Adrien apologizes because he thought was his fault Nathalie got akumatized, Nathalie says it wasn’t his fault, Adrien then hugs Nathalie, and says that he will always be there for her, Nathalie then hugs him and says that she will also always be there for him.

Ok I gotta admit this show is shit but that was beautiful, see writers? Make us like tha characters and we will feel emotions, the clime was ruined in the end but I do not care, this episode had a lot of emotions, and DRAMA, the two things I love the most, along with LOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, this was episode made me not hate Adrien, Nathalie as a villain was cool, she was an idiot but still cool. This by far is the best episode so far, AND FOR MIRACULOUS EXTANDARS? IT WAS AMAZING! I’ll give this episode a 6.8/10 not perfect (there was a LOT of simping) but pretty good.

So I'm pretty much in a permanent identity crisis (joys of moving countries ever 3 years growing up) and I feel that Maxwell Lord line so hard. Except for me it was my accent.

I constantly get asked 'where are you from? No, where are you REALLY from?'

And even when it's complimentary, it's really quite...degrading, I guess. I got asked to repeat phrases a lot because my accent was 'cute' and I just wanted to crawl into a hole.

So basically that's a long winded way of saying that the way Pedro played Maxwell Lord and the backstory he was given were a really great way to give the character some nuance, because if I had a villain origin story, that'd be it.

I’m really sorry you’ve gone through that. People can be very insensitive to differences, especially when you don’t want to stand out. I’m glad you’re not a villain. 🥰 But I’d understand it if you were!

Pedro definitely played very well being someone who didn’t want to stand out, and why, in a very sympathetic way. And how much that decision affected everything else in his life. He has beautiful sensitivity to these issues.

I hope his performance inspired people to be more accepting of differences, and of their own selves.

A Review of Exaltation

They hate each other so much, lmao.

The loss of faith in Ladybug is really emphasised, I’m glad that the plot didn’t just go forward without mentioning the social ramifications of losing the Miraculous Box. The masses of Paris never had much of a role before, aside from being fearful civilians or supporters. In this season, however, they have gone from side-characters and scene-fillers to having voices of their own. Realistically, of course, people will have contentions with Ladybug. Jalil’s own little sister risking her life for what appears to be a foolhardy mission for Ladybug would irk his nerves. I didn't expect this, but I'm glad the writers wrote this in.

It’s symbolic that Lila’s avatar is the one reading the criticism.

Again, Chat Noir seems to have vanished.

This Jeanne d'Arc design is very eye-catching, but she looks far too old here. Jeanne d’Arc died at 19, and she’s immortalised as a fourteen-year-old. This Jeanne looks middle-aged. Far too grisly.

“She’s afraid of her feelings and running away by inventing new ones for someone unavailable.” There you go, they acknowledge it in the show, twice.

Doom-scrolling. This is a criticism on social media.

“If you ride horses, you would know it’s a trap.” This suggests that Adrien rides horses.

Scene of Félix and Adrien playing polo in London, when?

Oh, that is terrifying. Reminds me of the nightmare 2D sequences from The Prince of Egypt.

There a scene in the second Origins episode in Season 1 where Adrien is asked who was the first president of the 5th French Republic, and Adrien answers “Everyone thinks it was de Gaulle, but it was actually René City before the first elections.” A repeat of that happens here, where Adrien, or Chat Noir, is asked a question and he answers it while disapproving the common myth. Reminds the audience that no matter how he acts, Adrien is smart.

A lot of Season 1 callbacks, from villains, action sequences, to little moments like these.

Pharaoh is held in constraints of his own powers. He doesn’t control the truth either, the Book of Ma’at does.

This is a pretty cool sequence. I don’t know it its true or not, but the animation style is pretty neat. Looks like a moving tapestry.

“Missed again! How did they do it?” By attending their history classes.

No matter what else changes in Future Paris, I’m glad they kept the Louvre.

Bunnyx cameo.

Whoa, the new Cataclysm music? It sounds neither triumphant nor villainous. Just - here and ready to blast.

Since when did powered-up Ladybug have extra hair ribbons?

Monarch knows clearly that he’s the villain, no matter how well-intentioned his motives are.

The fact that Ladybug is a good person and does good things is an ultimate truth.

At least Jalil is willing to admit to his mistakes.

Might this be the first time that Gabriel leaves his lair without a single word of taunt or swearing revenge. He approaches Nathalie’s bedroom, and simply apologies. That single statement packs quite a lot of heat and history behind it. Despite gaining so much ground, winning so many new advantages, Gabriel doesn't feel an inch closer to victory.

This is a sweet story, touching on France's history of contention with the English, the idea that love and understanding can overcome differences. The oil paintings used to illustrate the story is inspired. But I really hate it whenever any media tries to absorb some real-world figures or mystery into their lore. George Washington was actually a child of Athena, the Stonehenge was created to fight aliens, Jack the Ripper was actually a demon slain by our hands. The Hell they are. I cannot accept that Sun Wukong was a normal man using a Monkey Miraculous, or that Mulan used the Dragon Miraculous to win her wars. Jeanne d’Arc is the only past Ladybug Holder that is an actual person, I think, and it’s just very strange to claim that her power came from Miraculous jewels. Pushes the suspension of disbelief even further.

Adrien gets his own Kwagatama, finally.

Pick Up The Pieces

Endeavor x The Consequences of His Actions is my OTP

“My name is Toya Todoroki.”

You’re in a medical tent near the woods outside the Gunga operation when Dabi’s broadcast starts. Your injuries are minor, you’d only come to drop off another hero who wasn’t so lucky and are about to run back into the fight when your phone goes off with a special message. Like everyone else you watch in shock as the villain explains his tragic beginning and the man he blames for it, but of course you have more reason than most to be horrified by this reveal. You want to believe your daughter’s origin is still a closely-guarded secret, but it wouldn’t take much digging to discover it if someone were motivated. All you can do is stand there and pray someone will cut the feed before he can drag your family into the mess, and for a moment you dare to hope when it seems like his story is winding down.

“Oh, and how could I forget the cherry on top? After everything, the old man never learned his lesson.” Dabi holds up a picture and your heart stops. “This is Hikari, his newest kid. Her mom’s another hero named Barricade. Wonder if she would have gone through with it if she knew what happened to his firstborn.” Every face in the tent turns to silently gawk at you, you’re going to be sick.

“I…have to go,” you announce to no one in particular. Someone finally calls your name but you ignore it as you sprint into the forest with a knot of cold dread in your stomach.

You have enough sense to immediately shut down all your social media and then disappear for a bit. You’re a minor enough hero that the scandal would have blown over soon enough if not for everything else involving Endeavor. It takes three days and a lot of effort on your part before you work up the nerve to sneak into the hospital, but it’s worth the trouble. You visit your friends first, who are all happy you’ve come to wish them well but pointedly avoid looking you in the eye or acknowledging the infant on your hip. It’s one uncomfortable meeting after another, but you power through them. Your status as a hero allows you to stay past normal visiting hours, so you hang back until you’re sure a certain family of civilians have gone home. You don’t bother knocking before you open the door, your heart lodged firmly in your throat.

“Hey, Todoroki.”

You think he might be asleep until he slowly turns to look at you. “I didn’t expect you to come.” His voice is rough. Hikari’s slept through most of the day but immediately perks up when she hears her father’s voice. She reaches for him with a little whine but you glance nervously at the IV and face mask he’s wearing. “It’s fine, really,” he insists, and you cross the room to carefully pass her to him. “I’m glad to see you,” he murmurs to her and her toothless smile is so innocent it sends a real, physical pain to your chest.

Neither of you speak for a long moment. “Enji, what the fuck,” you finally blurt out. “I knew there was something bad with your kids, but I never thought…” your voice cracks. “You destroyed your son and then he came back to destroy everything! I don’t even know how to process that, but now he’s dragged her into this.”

“If I’d thought for even a moment he was still alive, I would have found him,” he muses weakly. He’s not defending himself, it’s nothing but wishful thinking from a broken man. It sounds like Endeavor, the strongest hero in the country, is on the verge of tears and it leaves a sick feeling in your stomach. “I would have saved him.”

You shake your head. “I don’t think you could. Maybe someone else, but not you.”

The two of you fall into an extremely uncomfortable silence while you watch Hikari play with the toy she brought along, a little stuffed gorilla he’d given her a few weeks ago. She smiles up at her parents and babbles out nonsense, and in your heart you know you’ll never forgive Dabi for involving her in his revenge.

“If you’d known, would we have had her?”

You shake your head. “I wouldn’t have gotten so close in the first place, she wouldn’t have existed at all.” That thought hurts more than anything else, and you take a shuddering breath.

He lets out a deep sigh. “I appreciate that you brought her here, and I understand if you want to cut ties after tonight. I won’t fight to see her, I have no right-”

You snap. “Are you kidding me?” Your voice is shrill, it takes every ounce of self control you have to keep from screaming at him. “This is your daughter, Todoroki! It’s your job to pick up the pieces and fix this for her. You are going to clean up your mess and drag that lunatic off the streets, kicking and screaming. You are going to be involved with your kid and not screw it up this time. You are going to prove that you’re not the same dumpster fire you were back then!” You grab the collar of his shirt, pure anger written on your face as you consider whether to punch a hospitalized man. “This is your responsibility, I’m not letting you off the hook so easily. You understand that?”

He almost looks relieved at your outburst more than anything else. “I do.”

You calm your shaky breath and release him. “Good. And don’t you dare assume you can get out of this by dying. You’re in it for the long haul.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” Maybe it’s just a trick of the dim light, but you’d swear there’s the slightest ghost of a smile on his face. “I’ll make sure to call you once there’s a plan in place for our next move,” he promises, and you look forward to it. You stay until Hikari tires herself out and falls asleep on his chest, and you move carefully to take her back.

He offers you the stuffed gorilla when you prepare to leave, but you shake your head. “It’s her favorite. I think she’d want it to stay with you.” You give him a sharp glare, you’re not going to coddle him because of his injuries. “Get out of here soon so she can have it back.”

“Thank you,” he calls out softly as you shut the door to his room behind you. You’re not looking forward to what lies ahead, but there’s no avoiding it. The sooner this fight comes, the sooner you can end it and make things better for the future.

I'm still planning on doing most of the challenge too eventually since I made a list with books that are already on my list. But I have to take a break with reading for a while since I'm so busy so now it won't be until next year. I always like seeing your reading updates though. I'm almost done with Songbirds and Snakes since I wanted to read it before the movie came out and I saw that you didn't enjoy it much at all lol. I think it's okay but pretty much had to speed read it. It seems a little bit long to me but I also don't usually read that kind of genre. very glad (and relieved) to hear that at least someone enjoys my reading updates!!! i think i just felt awkward cause i don’t see anyone else updating their posts for the reading challenge, but i have to remind myself that it’s just a silly little number, and no one minds that i’m still doing it - certainly not the hosts! i think if i committed myself to the challenge more in the beginning (i didn’t start till mid september, and read lots of different books between the ones i put for the prompts) i would have gotten the challenge done sooner, but even then! it’s just a fun way for me to nail off books that have already been on my tbr, and that’s all that matters 😊

i actually wrote a review on tbosas! reading it over … yikes i was kinda harsh lol. i think i was just never inclined to read it in the first place, and so i went in with already not looking forward to it. now that the movie has come out, and people are analyzing the story and the parallels to thg (@jeanmoreaux is FANTASTIC at finding meaning in text) my main gripe is that no matter what, i couldn’t - and wouldn’t - root or sympathize with snow. i think i was always satisfied with just accepting him as the villain in thg, i don’t need his sob story. since i couldn’t get into his character, it made it reeeaally hard to enjoy his pov for 500 pages. i didn’t really like lucy gray, didn’t like the inclusion of songs, and felt odd about the whole ‘the hanging tree’ origin.

idk. maybe it’s just me, and i can see and respect other people liking the book, but it just wasn’t for me. i would agree the movie looks good (and i wouldn’t be against seeing it)

ok I lied i’m pretty sure this is my number one. it’s wonderful and I never fell for a story so fast. i’m slowly reading the webnovel alongside it, but considering the comic will be updating for ~10 yrs, (and yes i’m keeping up with it!!) i’m lowkey worried it might have a sad ending which i really don’t want (all i want is for kim dokja and his friends to be happy). if i say anything else this will get too long. it’s (i think) the only non-romance on this list.

Please Don’t Eat Me!

this isn’t really a healthy romance...which is expected from the premise + chapter 1... it works bc both leads know that their relationship isn’t normal. It’s good to read as a romance and thriller.

also i really love this story. it’s very interesting to think about bc while the female lead had reincarnated into a novel, she never finished it. and the og novel isn’t a romance at all. the readers have no idea what originally happened except for what the fl describes, and she doesn’t know the full story either. very mysterious

and the male lead is probably one of the most clever and scheming characters i’ve ever read about. as the og protagonist he would’ve been so overpowered

and the art!!! it really makes the story seem more terrifying and shows what the fl really feels through the screen.

the female lead is very cool and very smart. i think the title of the story is also cool bc most ‘villainess’ stories involve someone reincarnating into an og villain. but in this case, she was originally seen as a villain (not really one), then really became a villainess in her 2nd life. tho even then, idk if she is a villainess. she’s a protagonist who does bad things, and opposes another ‘villainess’.

The Villainess Flips the Script! / I Will Make an Effort to Change the Genre

i love the plot. and this trio’s interactions are very fun to read!! the og main character (the child) and the female lead make this story with reincarnation much more interesting :D

Love this one especially bc it isn’t an isekai, there’s no regressor -- just a romantic fantasy where the fl is trying to live her best life with her son. She’s pretty cool. And...I like the ml. His interactions with his son are ironic and sweet as well.

it’s very funny,, the misunderstandings are hilarious but its also frustrating. bc there’s a lot the couple needs to ‘overcome’/get approval for that they don’t actually need to. also i love the male lead’s family.

i love them so much. there’s a special place in my heart for sweet romances. i don’t even know if these two will end up together but they’re so sweet and kind. it feels very episodic (so far), which reminds me of a lot of manga i used to read as a preteen. maybe that’s why it almost reminds me of Ouran High School Host Club. it’s pretty chill compared to the rest on this list, which is nice to read for a change.

Last year my best friend and I came together to cheer up our bed-ridden friend by throwing our own Oscar-esc ‘DnD Awards’, celebrating the last year of our campaigns and the adventures we had along the way. We did research into Oscar Categories, we cast votes and heavily debated who should win and finally, we presented over Skype and gave GIFs as trophies. Here’s the categories for your own.

9-1-1 REACTION

This reaction is for the season 5, seventeenth episode titled "Hero Complex" which originally aired on May 9, 2022. The episode was written by Stacey R. Rose and Kristen Reidel and directed by Marita Grabiak. Spoilers ahead!

We start this episode with a villain origin story! We see a little boy with serial killer tendencies on a school bus cicra the mid-90s. When the bus driver has a heart attack and crashes the bus, little Norman Bates jumps into action and saves the day. His rescue efforts garners attention from the local press. He's also awarded a key to the city as well as a $50,000 check for college. Throughout all of this, we see him soaking it all up. We then flash-forward to the present and see adult Jonah Greenway (Bryce Durfee) reveling in the attention he receives as a paramedic. Somebody has a hero complex! Oooooh, that's the title of the episode! Cue title card!

The funeral of Claudette Collins (Vanessa Williams) happens and May, Athena, and Bobby attend. May is clearly shaken by the death of her former coworker/nemesis. Athena and Bobby try to console her but May believes that Claudette shouldn't have died. You know who else doesn't think Claudette should've died? Henrietta Wilson! Hen also attends the funeral and does some sleuthing during the repass which takes place at Claudette's home. Side Note: We learn this episode that Claudette Collins leaves behind a husband and a daughter which makes her death even more heartbreaking. Anywho, Hen learns via the medicine cabinet that Claudette had high blood pressure. She presents this information to her bestie Chimney and heavily insinuates that Jonah may have been involved in her death. What I love about this scene is that Chimney doesn't question Hen. He doesn't doubt her claims. Instead, he believes her and tells her that they need more proof.

Hen and Chimney head over to the 118 and wait for those on duty to be called out to an emergency. THey then sneak into Bobby's office and locate the paperwork for two emergencies that were handled by Jonah. Hen reads about Perry - the spider-sitter from a few episodes ago - and this is where we the viewer are reminded that Perry coded and was quickly revived by Jonah prior to being loaded into the ambulance. To further cement that something ain't right about Mr. Jonah Greenway, Hen and Chimney learn he's been with several other fire departments across the country, including Chicago, Dallas, Denver, and Miami. Why all the hopping around, Jonah? Suspicious indeed!

After leaving the house, Hen starts to think maybe she is reading too much into things but thankfully Chimney is there to reassure her. Something is definitely up with Jonah aka Monday and he needs to be stopped before someone else ends up hurt. Or worse. I am so glad Chimney is back because I've missed this partnership and friendship so badly. Hen heads home and catches Karen up on what she's been investigating. We learn that Hen talked to someone at the 122, the house that Jonah was relocated after Chimney came back. The person tells Hen that while responding to a call involving a fender bender, the driver went into cardiac arrest and died while under the care of Jonah. Karen points out that there's a pattern here and here is yet another person who has chosen to believe Hen rather than doubt her.

Hen and Chimney head over to Buck and Taylor's place and ask to see the news footage taken during the call center fire. When Taylor plays the footage, Jonah can clearly be seen in the background injecting some kind of drug into Claudette's IV. When Buck and Taylor ask what is going on, Hen and Chimney ask that what they are about to tell them is off the record. They go into detail about everything concerning Jonah and Buck starts poking holes into their accusations. This seemed very out of character for Buck. Usually when it comes to this sort of thing, he is very quick to get on board. I'm usually a huge Buck fan but he really annoyed me in this scene. Thankfully Taylor is on Hen and Chimney's side and she thinks that Jonah may be a serial killer.

Hen and Chimney present the video to Bobby and Athena. Athena posits that maybe Jonah is some kind of angel of mercy but Hen believes something deeper is going on. She believes that Jonah is bringing their patients to the brink of death only to use his skills to bring them back. Jonah Greenway is playing God and Hen is not here for it. Meanwhile, Bobby learns that an investigation has been opened regarding Claudette's death and Jonah has been placed on light duty pending the results of said investigation. Fearing that Jonah might come after her and the people she loves. On the way home, she receives a call from Jonah and he insinuates that he's gonna do something to get back at her for not giving him a chance. She makes a call to Karen and tells her to get her mom and Denny out of the house. Karen puts two and two together and realizes that if Jonah is coming after someone Hen cares about, it's not her or Denny or her mother - it's the person whose place he could never take. Jonah is going after Chimney.

Hen heads over to Chimney's place and finds the door to his apartment open. When she goes inside, Chimney is nowhere to be found. When she goes to text him, Jonah comes up behind her and drugs her. Hen wakes up in Jonah's apartment and finds herself bound in a chair. On the other side of the room, she sees an unconscious Chimney connected to an IV. Jonah taunts Hen by telling her that she messed things up for him and that they were supposed to be on the same team. Using drugs and a defibrillator he purchased probably off the dark web, he administers something via Chimney's IV that causes him to flat-line. Hen starts to freak out and I imagine this had to be her worse nightmare come to life. Having the means to save someone you care about but not having the power to do so has to be a horrific feeling. Jonah uses shock paddles to restart Chimney's heart and if it wasn't apparent before, this man is a psychopath.

Hen pleads for Jonah to let Chimney go and instead he stops CHimney's heart again and then shocks it back to a steady rhythm. Poor Chimney - he's been through so much just this season alone. He did not deserve this. While Jonah talks to Hen about her needing a new partner, Chimney regains consciousness and starts slipping his hands out of the restraints. While Hen continues to vamp, Chimney presses a button on the heart monitor to make it look like he's flat-lining. When Jonah goes over to investigate, Chimney uses one of the shock paddles on him which knocks him out. He then falls off of the table he is on and crawls over to Hen. The two of them are so grateful to be alive and this moment further cements their friendship.

The cavalry shows up thanks to Karen and Maddie and Jonah is arrested. One of the best moments of the episode was seeing Bobby going into Papa Bear mode and punch Jonah in the face. I know I get on Owen's case for always using his fist but this is out of character for Bobby so I didn't mind it as much. Bobby is clearly rattled by nearly losing two of his paramedics and blames himself for hiring Jonah in the first place. Athena calms him down and reminds him that he didn't know that Jonah was a homicidal maniac. She also assures Hen that Jonah is going to jail for a very long time. Hen and Chimney are sent to the hospital for observation and both are happy to be alive. I'm so glad this nightmare is over and I hope we never have to see Jonah Greenway again.

There are only two other story arcs in this episode and one of them involves Eddie returning home to Texas for his father's retirement celebration. Eddie has a very strained relationship with his dad and resents him for not being around when he was growing up. Let me just say, it was so nice to see Aunt Pepa and Eddie's abuela. I have missed them and I love how supportive they are of Eddie and Christopher, even when Eddie's parents aren't. Eddie is intent on making it through the celebration with no drama but things take a turn when Eddie's parents tease him about the time he wrecked the dad's truck when his mom went into labor. All of the resentment Eddie has for his dad finally bubbles over and he rips into him about how he was never there and how it was Eddie looking after his mom and sisters. Clearly this conversation is too much for the elder Diaz to handle because he starts having what I thought at first was a heart attack. Eddie recognizes the symptoms immediately and asks him flat out if he hasn't any heart stents. Ramon Diaz admits to having three heart stents put in and the rest of the family, including his wife, are shocked. He then admits that pride was the reason why he kept this from his family.

Eddie realizes he and his dad actually have more in common than they realize. They both hide things because they fear the people around them will think they are weak. Eddie opens up about the time he had a panic attack while shopping for a suit for Christopher. Eddie tells his dad that he's spent most of his life trying not to be like his father but all he wants now is to just be a better person for his sake and Christopher's sake. Ramon commits to wanting to be a better person as well, including a better father (and hopefully a better grandfather) to Eddie and Christopher. I really liked this storyline because one thing this show does better than Lone Star is we get to see the familial relationships more. I like Eddie's family and I love seeing their culture displayed openly and proudly. I hope we get to see more of them, especially Aunt Pepa and Abuela.

Finally, let's talk about Buck and Taylor. Now I'm someone who has vehemently defended Taylor in the past mostly because the 9-1-1 fandom as a whole loves to laud Buck for the very things they condemn Taylor for. However, in this episode, what Taylor does is indefensible. When Buck makes her promise to not say anything about the Jonah Greenway situation, I kept thinking to myself, Buck you should have been more specific in your wording. When Taylor got that look on her face, I knew she was about to go behind Buck's back and do something shady. And sure enough, she did. Adding further insult to injury is that just a few episodes ago, Buck and Taylor had a very raw and honest conversation about Buck cheating on her. Taylor tells him to never lie to her again and she turns around and does the same thing to him, albeit there was no cheating involved. A part of me wonders if Taylor did what she did to get back at Buck after seeing him talking to Lucy last episode. Whatever her motives are, I feel like Taylor's days are numbered. One thing Buck thrives off is trust and that is something Taylor has violated in a major way. Ugh - Taylor! I was rooting for you! How dare you! Learn something from this.

Well, that's the end of the episode. What an incredible penultimate episode! The back half of season 5 continues to not disappoint. I'm so happy that Jonah finally got caught and Claudette's death was avenged. Kudos to Hen and Chimney for putting their partnership to good use and saving the day and further proving that Hen was right to not trust Jonah. Unfortunately this episode isn't without casualties so to speak. I honestly believe that Buck is going to break up with Taylor. I don't see him being able to continue having a relationship with someone he doesn't trust. Also, I'm now worried about Bobby. First last week's fire had to be very triggering for him. On top of all of that, he feels responsible for hiring Jonah in the first place. Bobby places so much pressure on himself and some would say rightfully so considering he's the captain. I just pray we don't see him relapse. He's been sober for about two years now since he lost his sobriety. This show and Lone Star loves to have their addicts lose their sobriety for some reason. I really, really hope Bobby talks to someone whether it be Athena or a professional if he considers drinking or using again. I'm really worried about how this season is going to end but I guess I have to wait a week to find out. Until next time ...

Oh no! That would’ve been a very short secret Santa! I’ll tell ya, I always have to triple check I’m on anon and am very careful when coming onto your blog, not wanting to like something and give myself away lol! I’ll definitely try and remember to send ya a pick of self titled when I can!

TPWK is my baby on fine line, she just means so much to me and I love how fun it seems live! Hope one day I get to hear it live same with lights up! I think I’d probably cry! I did have a favorite in the band, yes! It was Louis I’m pretty sure, it’s been so long now but I think I was drawn to him because his personality and he was a goofball. I think to this day I’m still a Louis person. I just love him so much. And then H and Niall I adore them as well! I dont keep up with Liam much other than following him on insta and same with Zayn but I try to check in on them every now and again and see what’s going on and try to listen to whatever new music they put out!

I do the exact same thing with Stardew!!! I start a save, play for awhile and then I kinda lose the fixation I had on it for awhile and I try to pick it back up but I’ve got no idea what I was doing/planning on my farm or in the game! That’s what’s going on rn, last time I played I just remember trying to marry Harvey but I’ve got no idea what else I was doing. I think I’ve only married Elliot and Shane! But I want to explore all of the characters as partners in separate saves of course but I think it’s fun to know like everything! George and Evelyn are great picks! I think I’d have to say Linus is my favorite non-marriageable character.

Oh, yay! I’m glad you saw the trailer and are excited for it now! I’ve been trying to keep up on the updates for that game because I love Stardew so much and ConcernedApe is such a cool guy I know the game will be amazing. I think one of the cool things about him is that he made most/all of the Stardew on his own and that just blows my mind. He also is very communicative with his community and makes his game easy to add mods to like he talks to people who make them I’m pretty sure to figure out how to make the game easier to add their mods which I feel like you don’t see a lot. One thing I love about Stardew which isn’t a big thing is decorating my house and seeing what looks like the house in Haunted Chocolatier gets me excited to decorate that big place!

Yoshi gang!!! He’s just a little guy!!! I always try to pick my characters just based off like if they’re just weird little guys and I think yoshi and dry bones definitely are! And I wish Monty was in like Mario kart and other party games that he isn’t in cause I just love him. I wish I had more to say about them but I’m not very knowledgeable in Nintendo characters if I’m honest!

Capitalism definitely plays a factor in declining media and it’s a just awful. It’s also my villain origin story. I think postcards and letters would be such a fun thing to send especially to friends even if they are nearby, I mean why not you know? And thank you! We definitely should be collecting things to show off! I can’t stand like minimalism because I’m always like but what about all the trinkets and fun stuff!!! I want someone to walk into my home/room and know so much about me like know what I like and just say like “oh what a cool little thing! Where’d you get it?” I love going to estate sales/garage sales and thrift stores and trying to find weird little things to put up.

That’s such a good sudden skill to have! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that! I used to know how to use photoshop like the basics but it’s been a long time since I’ve had access to it and I’ve forgotten a lot of it cause my memory is just awful. I’m all about vans! Me and my dad always say the crazier the pattern the better! I just think they’re so cool! Those are sick! I’ve wanted to get into platform shoes a bit cause I’m on the average height side and I’d like to be taller! Can’t wait for you to get those, you’re gonna absolutely rock them! That’s a good pick, I was thinking about getting something like that when I’ve got the money just because I like to know I’ve got room for everyone buuut recently I’ve been looking more into trucks! Volkswagen van is the dream though for sure, my dad used to have one and both of us are so bummed he got rid of it years and years ago cause they’re so expensive now. Crochet is a great answer! I’d love to learn how to do that too! I kinda knew how as a kid but that was like 10 years ago.

I’m glad you had an okay day yesterday! I’m a bit of a fan of gloomy days but they do go by slower for sure. All the new pictures of Louis have definitely been highlights! I always adore when there’s an influx of content like this and can interaction. His connection to fans really is like no other and it’s part of why I love being his fan. Like a lot of artists say what he does but it’s just different with Louis. You know he means it when he says he needs us and we need him and all that. I’ve never been a fan of someone and felt that connected but also separated (in the way of like he’s famous and I don’t know this man and I’m just a fan) from an artist which is such an experience but I love it.

Do you enjoy more bright colorful colors or more like cool and toned down colors? Or a mix? I like to think I like a mix!

Do you have a favorite restaurant/place to eat? Mine is a little mom and pop shop but I haven’t had it in so long!! It kills me cause their burgers and onion rings are the best I’ve ever had! And then for like special occasions my family will go to a hibachi place and it’s always so incredibly good!

Stardew should have, like, a recap mode where it gives you a short intro. on what you were doing previously so you can get right back into it lol!! That would be so helpful cause my memory is shit when it comes to remembering what I did last, but I don’t wanna start a new save cause I really liked what I was doing in that original one!! Linus is… a character to say the least lol!! He really is an interesting one!! I feel you on the decoration!! Honestly, I can’t with for Niall to release information about his third album/tour!! Heartbreak Weather (album) deserves so much better than what it got because of the timing it came out!! Hopefully that doesn’t happen with this upcoming album!! Same with Zayn and his new music coming!!

Speed Round Answers!! Crazies thing done to my appearance? To be honest, nothing really lol. I’ve never dyed my hair before, though I would love to!! I’d say if I could right now, I’d chop it off to my shoulders and do, like, a side-shaved look!! Idk how it would look on me, but I’d probably go in that direction!! Morning bird/night owl? I’d say back when I lived on campus, there was this sushi restaurant about 10 minutes away and we would always order from them on Fridays when my roommates and I craved it!! Might have to pass by sooner than I think!! Hibachi is always a good option too!!

so the first couple times the whole ~cheating~ thing happened she didn’t know. like she actually was a victim in the situations they came onto her and she responded in kind and then later on down the line found out they was with someone else too but word got around and the story got changed she got painted as the bad guy ‘the other woman’ and after a while of being ostracized bc of it she just developed the attitude of like ‘if everyone thinks i’m this way i might as well be” BUT she does have like a don’t ask don’t tell policy so she can be SUSPICIOUS of someone having a partner nd if no one says anything explicitly it’s fair game 🤷‍♀️ she likes having plausible deniability but she won’t actually get with anyone she KNOWS is in a relationship all this to say she was never actually gonna sleep with hobi her friend just pissed her off

anyway idk where this story came from at all or why 💀 but it did nd idk i just like the idea the theme i kinda kept of doing bad things but not being a bad person bc tbh i just love villains like if i’m watching something 9/10 imma like the villain more than the good guy nd i think it’s easy to label people as one way or another but in all actuality humans are very three dimensional creatures like in this case oc may have been in the habit of hooking up with people in relationships but that wasn’t like her main MO it was more like if it happened it happened type of thing but even so it doesn’t change the fact that she’s kind, supportive, a loyal friend and prone to giving people the benefit of the doubt she has a sense of morality albeit a bit skewed nd just like she ain’t the antagonist she was made out to be ya know?

The Great Anime Rewatch of 2022 - Part X

Uchouten Kazoku seasons 1-2

First watched: 2013, original airdates Rewatched: July 2022

I still can’t believe this was animated by PA Works. It’s kind of hard to specifically pinpoint the reasons why I like Uchouten Kazoku. The first and obvious answer is the titular family, who have great chemistry and genuine love for each other. The chaotic situations they find themselves in are entertaining and vibrant, and there is tension in the more dangerous scenario. Yasaburo is a likable and enjoyable protagonist, though it’s a shame they got rid of his gender fluidity after the first few episodes. There’s also Benten, who has such presence, bending most of the cast and the scenes to her will. She’s fascinating to watch.

The second season doesn’t quite do it for me in the way the first season does. I think that’s mainly due to a shift in focus from the Shimogamo’s and a darker tone. It introduces more characters and doesn’t necessarily excel at juggling them all. It also decided to get rid of the villains by way of a deus ex machina, so that wasn’t cool. It’s still got a lot of charm and heart, and the team poured their love into it. Someone else can talk about Uchouten Kazoku much better than I can. I’m really glad I revisited it.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha Movie 1st & 2nd

I’ve got a lot of nostalgia with Nanoha. I was introduced to it back in 2007-2008 from a bunch of people on a forum. I always thought the mecha elements were super cool, and enjoyed he devices. I drew the characters so often I knew every detail of their designs from memory. In the interest of time (and better animation), I opted for the films. So how’d they do?

1st - The music is great. The pacing is wild. Precia still fucking sucks. In the end, I finished this movie without being entertained or engaged very much. If you take away the uniqueness of the sci-fi elements, then you’re left with a rather standard story that doesn’t do much for me anymore.

2nd - Holy shit this movie is two and a half hours long. Within the first ten minutes we’re already wasting time on recapping. But after that, this is more like it. I was much more invested. It got rid of the stupid masked man story element that I never liked in the original TV series, though it failed to make Zafira anything more than just a counterpart to Arf. The biggest downside is that my old love for the series never fully returned.

Seven Arcs continued to milk this franchise as recently as 2018. If they continue to do so, I may just have to sit it out from now on. However I’ll always appreciate Nanoha for launching Mizuki Nana into superstardom.

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni & Kai

I used to love Higurashi. When Gou was released in 2020, I was excited to watch, only to drop it at eight episodes. Was it the adaptation itself, or had my affection for the franchise dissipated?

The answer is: my affection for Higurashi dissipated. Completely. Turns out having poorly drawn and animated children make crazy faces, scream bloody murder, and mutilate each other isn’t scary anymore. If anything, the most unsettling thing about it is how the show revels in the torturous situations it puts its characters in. The comedy sections are terribly annoying and unfunny, too. Higurashi is comprised of two extremes with little to no middle ground. It doesn’t work for me.

Kai works much better for a few main reasons:

1. we now have a core objective. 2. there’s a middle ground between the horror and comedy. 3. instead of the question being “who will die and how?” it’s “will the party succeed?”

It doesn’t really do any of these things well enough for me to care. But Kai is much more watchable, and has a broader and more genuine emotional spectrum. Being a direct sequel, the same things I hate about the first season still plague Kai: most of the school life scenes, its dreadful sense of humor, and unintentionally hilarious/cringe worthy facial expressions.

Revisiting Higurashi was disappointing, but it was important in making me realize just how much my preferences in horror have evolved. If I want something that actually scares me, I’d reread The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, or replay Nier: Automata, or reread Ito Junji’s Uzumaki- no no no nope not that last one, nope. I don’t think I can go there again. Just like how I will not touch the Higurashi franchise ever again.

Only Yesterday

English dub this time. (Does Dev Patel not have a standard American accent? His British sticks out like a sore thumb, and I don’t think his voice fits the character.)

I think I was too young when I first watched this. I can appreciate it more now, but it still doesn’t grip me the way some of Takahata’s other films do. I find the narration and dialogue focusing on processes and farming to be incredibly dull, and some of the scenes feel too long. Also, everyone in Taeko’s family treats her like absolute garbage, FOR WHAT? I’m surprised she didn’t grow up to be more damaged.

The final scene is absolutely beautiful, though. Takahata’s work is always focused and dedicated to the human life—how different people and experiences shape us, what they make us feel, and how we process those emotions. His films cover a broader emotional spectrum than most directors could dream of. I may not love Only Yesterday, but watching the physicality of these characters is such a masterclass in visual language. Show, don’t tell.

Perfect Blue is still unsettling and scary as it always has been. With the way idol culture and worship has only escalated since the rise of social media, this feels even more icky and relevant. I can’t imagine what Perfect Blue would’ve been like if had been made today, and if Kon would’ve survived.

Summer Wars

Since Summer War’s initial release in 2009, depictions of the internet and avatars is no longer a unique concept. By now it’s become rather tired, and several sub-genres are identified with the concept. But Summer Wars also revolves around a disgustingly large family with too many characters who simply exist for the sake of existing. It was an unfocused narrative that provided little to interest or entertain me. And the romance? Kill me.

Hosoda Mamoru’s work doesn’t nearly work for me in the way it does for a lot of other people. I absolutely abhor The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and thought very little of Wolf Children. I remember nothing about Bakemono no Ko, but I have it rated as a 6. After watching Belle, which had the EXACT SAME OPENING SEQUENCE from Summer Wars, right down to a big ass whale, I think his problem is that he’s trying to do too much in his films. There’s so much extraneous, irrelevant nonsense that’s an absolute waste of the audience’s time. Things happen way too conveniently. The content of the film does not justify the length. Film is a medium where less tends to be more, and simplicity is often best. Hosoda Mamoru is a director with a vision, but he is not a competent storyteller. His work simply isn’t for me.

“but I thought about how I needed to say this”

a.k.a. yet another meta dissection of The Apology. I actually wrote most of this up on Friday night based on the original Japanese (@pikahlua has an excellent translation up here, and I also used @hanashimas’ translations as a reference as well), but I wanted to wait until the official release, though that turned out to be a mixed bag to say the least lol.

I would also recommend reading @pikahlua and @class1akids’ breakdowns of this scene (here and here, respectively), because they are excellent, and because if any scene deserves to have as many meta breakdowns written about it as possible, it’s this one.

anyway so here goes.

Caleb did a more accurate job with this than the fanscan, even if he did try his best to take us out of the seriousness of the moment by throwing in that swiss cheese line lol. anyway so there are two things I want to talk about here. the first is the line about Izuku not remembering, which I thought was a nice touch. of course he doesn’t remember what Kacchan said back then. he wasn’t exactly in the soundest emotional state after seeing one of the people he cares about most taking a near-fatal blow that was meant for him. I’d be shocked if he remembers anything about the aftermath (including the way he flew into a mindless rage afterwards) right up until the point when he entered the OFA Interstellar Party Void with Tomura. anyway, so I thought that was a nice callback.

and speaking of emotional states, the other thing I wanted to talk about is the part that Caleb got right which the fan scanlation didn’t. “but I had more to say.” in other words, “stop trying to win on your own” wasn’t just a one-liner; it was meant to be the beginning of a much longer speech. “there were other things that I needed to say.”

like, can we just stop and talk about that for a second. because basically what this means is that in that instant, when Kacchan pushed Deku out of the way and got impaled, his one and only thought was that he needed to apologize to Deku. his life was presumably flashing before his eyes, he had no idea if he was going to survive or not, and the only thing on his mind was how urgently he needed to make things right with his former childhood friend.

moving on!

so I have a confession to make, which is that I am relieved to see Katsuki describing this as the reason why he bullied Deku, as opposed to Horikoshi trying to retcon it into some sort of “secretly he was just trying to protect him and keep him out of harm’s way because he was worried” thing, which ngl would not have gelled very well with me. the thing is that I’m really not a fan of the whole “Kacchan Did Nothing Wrong” mentality that some fans seem to have. like, I have seen all sorts of convoluted attempts to find excuses for Katsuki’s shitty behavior, but in my view those attempts undermine what I love about his character in the first place. Katsuki is such a great character specifically because he is not perfect. his redemption arc is so compelling because he was such a giant asshole at the start. he was completely at fault, and he acknowledges this, and takes full responsibility for it. and that is fucking fantastic.

his arc is so great because it doesn’t rely on garnering sympathy by giving him a Tragic Past, or by trying to foist the blame for his behavior over on someone else. it’s an arc that acknowledges that redemption isn’t something you achieve by making people feel sorry for you; it’s something you have to earn by actively working to change and do better. and by forgoing the “misunderstood/tragic past” route, Horikoshi is making a statement that anyone can go down the wrong path, but that more importantly, anyone can also choose at any time to turn away from said path. there is only one requirement for doing so, and that is realizing that you’ve done wrong, and deciding that you want to change.

anyway, so in chapter 284 Kacchan of course had that whole speech about Deku not taking himself into account, and mentioned how that made him want to keep his distance. and a good chunk of fandom took this to mean that Katsuki’s bullying was actually a misguided response to Deku’s reckless tendencies -- sort of an “if I show him how weak and powerless he really is, I can get him to accept the reality that he’s quirkless, and that being a hero will just get him hurt or killed” type of thing. and I won’t lie, for a good while I was wondering myself if Horikoshi was really going to go down that route. and like I said, I am honestly relieved that he didn’t. not only for the reasons stated in the previous paragraph, but also because the message that would have sent -- that there are certain circumstances in which bullying can almost be excused because the bully had Good Intentions and was just trying to save the other person from themselves, and so it Wasn’t That Bad, Actually -- is all kinds of fucked up to say the least. so yeah, I’m glad we ended up steering well clear of that.

(ETA: this post was long enough already so I edited out the 3 additional paragraphs I originally wrote analyzing the dialogue from 284. but just to be clear, I’m not trying to imply that Kacchan worrying about Deku’s recklessness is a retconned thing that Horikoshi only threw into the story recently, because there are multiple instances throughout the story where he clearly is worried and in total denial of it. but I firmly believe those feelings are not what led to the bullying. they’re two separate things. Kacchan worrying about Deku is what prompts him to yell at him in chapter 1 when Deku comes to save him. but it’s not what incited him to burn his notebook and taunt him earlier in that same chapter. that action had a much meaner and more selfish motivation behind it, and I’m glad Horikoshi didn’t try to change it up last minute, because it wouldn’t have felt right.)

thankfully as of this chapter I think we can safely cross that out as a possibility, as we’re given the true explanation straight from Katsuki himself. and the truth is that he bullied Deku out of insecurity and jealousy and fear and intolerance. there was nothing noble about it. there were no good intentions concealed in his actions. there are no justifications given, no excuses offered, and no mitigating circumstances to be considered, other than the fact (which neither he nor Horikoshi bring up) that he was and is still a child, and that children make mistakes.

it’s an explanation that challenges many of fandom’s ideas on who is and isn’t eligible to be redeemed. there is no Ozai in Katsuki’s backstory. there’s no great tragedy that he spent a lifetime trying to rise above. the only villain in Katsuki’s story is Katsuki himself. the only darkness that he has to overcome is his own. and it’s challenging, because I think many people believe the only way someone can be redeemed for doing bad things is if bad things happen to them in return. but what Horikoshi is saying here is that that’s not the case. bad doesn’t erase bad. and the one and only way to truly earn redemption is by doing good.

and that’s what makes this such a phenomenal scene for me. by not shying away from Katsuki’s flaws and failings, and having him take full responsibility for them, Horikoshi keeps the apology from being self-serving, and underscores the true depth of Katsuki’s character development. the level of self-awareness he has here is something most people can only dream of. which is very fitting, as that’s perhaps the most important takeaway from his character arc -- that it’s only by acknowledging your own weaknesses and flaws that you can learn to overcome them and reach your full potential.

one last thing to point out here, which is that in the panel where Katsuki finally acknowledges his terrible treatment of Deku, Deku is not even visible. instead, Horikoshi drew the panel from a perspective that makes it appear that Katsuki is addressing this particular line not just to Deku, but to all of his classmates.

again, he shows him taking full responsibility and admitting his wrongdoings in front of the people whose opinions and approval he cares about most. and just to clarify in case there’s any confusion from Caleb’s translation, Kacchan’s wording makes it very clear that he wasn’t just “mean” to Deku, but that he full-on bullied him (he uses the same verb -- “ijimeru” (苛める) -- that he did back in chapter 284). there’s no attempt to downplay his actions here.

moving on now, this chapter also reaffirmed another thing about Deku and Kacchan’s relationship which I was glad to see revisited -- Kacchan’s unwavering belief in Deku’s ability. this is one of those paradoxical things about their relationship which I’ve always been fascinated by, but which is also kind of hard to explain, because I don’t want it to come off like I’m trying to put a positive spin on something which was unequivocally awful. like, please don’t think I’m trying to say that Katsuki’s bullying of Deku was in any way a good thing. but that being said, there’s also a strange irony at play here, which is that Katsuki’s jealousy and insecurity also betray the fact that even at his very worst, he never once underestimated Deku. he has always believed in Deku’s strength, even when that strength pissed him off and made him afraid and uneasy.

no one else -- not All Might, or even Deku’s own mom -- believed from the get-go that Deku could become a hero. but Katsuki never once counted him out, even when he was calling him a pebble in his shoe. he confesses here that even though he “tried to act superior by rejecting [Deku]”, in truth he was never able to shake the feeling that Deku was above him. long before he ever understood the concept of “win to save”, he knew instinctively that there was a strength in Deku’s heart that couldn’t be measured, and which had the potential to surpass even his own strength. and I’ve always felt that this was so important, because it’s the one aspect of their early relationship that hinted that on some level, however subconscious, Katsuki held the same type of faith in Deku that Deku always held in him. it was one of the few things that hinted at there being a possible path towards reconciliation one day. and it paved the way for the most important shift in their relationship to date, when Katsuki finally realized who Deku got his quirk from, and responded not with resentment or spite, but with acceptance.

moving on, I also really love the way we see them portrayed at the different stages of their childhood throughout this speech, and how it perfectly lines up with the dialogue. from small children (when Katsuki talks about his insecurities first manifesting), to middle schoolers (when he talks about the bullying), to high schoolers (when he talks about the past year and everything he’s learned at U.A.). Horikoshi really didn’t have to go that hard, but he did, and that’s why we love him.

and then we finally get to That Part.

where do I even start with this there are so many things omg.

the bow. this is the one and only time Katsuki has ever bowed to anyone of his own volition as far as I recall. and this absolutely is a bow, just to be clear, even though his form is straight-up garbage (very Kacchan-esque, with his feet and arms spaced apart because he’s still a punk after all). this is Kacchan showing more humility and respect than he’s ever shown to anyone else in his entire life.

regarding “Izuku”, I actually have mixed feelings about this to tell the truth. I think it was a good call here because it was incredibly effective in setting the tone and showing just how serious Kacchan is. however if he continues to use “Izuku” rather than “Deku” from here on out, that would give the impression in hindsight that all his past usage of “Deku” really was meant as an insult, which would undermine some of my favorite scenes. I would really like to believe that since DvK2 or thereabouts, Kacchan has (mostly) been using “Deku (affectionate)” rather than “Deku (useless loser)”, lol. but if he switches to the “nicer” name on a permanent basis following his apology, it implies that the previous nickname was indeed being used cruelly. and so honestly I hope this was just a one-time thing, because I do think that in Katsuki’s mind, the name “Deku” hasn’t been meant as a slight to him for a long time now.

“my truth/this is what I truly feel” -- the word Katsuki uses in Japanese is honne (本音), and if you’re familiar with the concept of honne/tatemae, that’s the same “honne” he’s talking about here. it means that he’s casting aside all of his walls and facades and expressing what he truly feels. and of course, one of the fascinating things about Katsuki’s character is that he’s the exact opposite of most people in that he chooses to put his meanness on full display to the public, and ironically it’s the kindest parts of himself which he tends to keep the most carefully guarded and hidden away. this also means that while his rage and anger are very often insincere and put on just for show, those relatively few occasions where he lets his humanity truly shine through are pretty much 100% genuine, as is the case with this one here.

and Deku’s face says it all when it comes to how powerful those moments can be as a result.

and this, right here, is why it wasn’t enough for Katsuki to atone solely through his actions, and why he needed to actually say the words as well. it’s not that the words are more important; obviously the actions are far and away the most important part, and carry far more meaning. but the reason why Katsuki needed to say the words as well is simply because Izuku needed to hear them. needed to, and deserved to, because this is one of the most important people in the world to him.

and so he deserves to know that the relationship isn’t just one-sided, and that he is just as important to Kacchan as Kacchan is to him. he deserves to know that Kacchan understands how horribly he treated him, and that he’s sorry for it. and he deserves to know that Kacchan, without any expectation of it changing their relationship -- meaning that he will continue to feel this way regardless of what Izuku says or does from here on out -- cares about him. now more than ever, with AFO out there doing everything in his power to make Izuku feel as alone as possible, this is something that he really, really needed to hear.

so this part has some interesting wordplay which neither Caleb’s translation nor the fan scanlation was really able to get across. basically, in the Japanese version, when Katsuki talks about “those ideals”, Horikoshi uses the kanji for “ideal”, but pronounces it as “All Might.” obviously the meaning of this isn’t too hard to decipher, as we all know how much both boys admire All Might. to them, he absolutely is synonymous with the Ideal. so this is a way of showing that respect they both have towards him, even as Katsuki goes on to point out the one fatal flaw that All Might was never able to overcome.

and speaking of interesting wording, as others have noted, at this point in his speech Katsuki switches from “temee” (which he was using earlier during the “your strengths and my weaknesses” part) to “omae” (“omae” being a less insulting word for “you”, though still very manly and tough-sounding), which is definitely a big deal. though fwiw this is not the first time he’s used “omae” for Deku (he switches to it briefly right after DvK2, when he tells Deku “you had the strongest guy lay the groundwork for you -- don’t lose”, and then later when they’re walking back to the dorms and he says he’ll learn and get stronger by watching everyone around him just like Deku did). it’s definitely a good choice on Horikoshi’s part though, as it makes this last part of the speech sound more earnest and sincere.

just a quick note, he does indeed use a plural pronoun here, as in “the obstacles that you can’t overcome, we will overcome.” but as @pikahlua pointed out, the “we” here is ambiguous -- it could either mean “we” as in class 1-A -- “we will overcome them for you” -- OR it could mean “we” as in all of them -- class 1-A and Deku. “we will overcome them together.” idk about you, but I know which one gets my vote.

anyway, and so this is the line that finally wins Deku over and allows him to let go of his fears, however briefly. what I love about this is Kacchan’s utter conviction. one thing that Caleb’s translation doesn’t quite get across is Kacchan’s use of the word morenaku -- “without exception” -- when he talks about how they’re going to save everyone and win. it echoes that same sentiment he showed back during the Joint Training arc -- that it’s not a perfect victory unless they save everyone. every last person. and he explicitly lists Deku among their number, just so there can be no doubt.

and what’s so wonderful about this though is that the two of them are finally approaching that point where they’ve both caught up to each other and are finally starting to level out. Deku is a full-on badass, and Kacchan is out here talk-no-jutsuing with the best of them. the two of them have been chasing and chasing after each other this entire time, and now they’re finally just about ready to meet in the middle at long last, with each of them fully embodying both of those two crucial aspects -- win, and save.

just about. because Deku still needs some help catching up. but seeing as help has already been offered -- and accepted -- I can’t imagine it will be very long now, and I can’t wait to see him finally overcoming those fears and doubts with his friends by his side. it’s going to be such a powerful moment.
