Murphy’s Law

There is an adage known as Murphy’s Law that states "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." The wisdom of the adage has been proven since time immemorial, and hard experience demonstrates that its application is universal, and it certainly applies to the operation of naval warships.

Surface warships have operated in close formations since the age of sail. While those close formations have a strategic purpose, there is also a downside. Close formations introduce the prospect of collisions. Before the inventions of radio, radar and electronic navigations systems collisions were often caused by fog, bad weather, human error, incorrect communications or any of a myriad of other things. One tragic example of a collision caused by human error involved a five-year-old destroyer that was pulled out of Mare Island Naval Shipyard’s reserve fleet in September of 1950. She had been built at the end of World War II and was placed in reserve as part of the massive drawdown following that war. When North Korea invaded South Korea the United Nations initial response was to recommend a naval blockade, but this strategy quickly morphed to active “boots on the ground” combat when President Truman was stunned to learn that demobilization had progressed to the point that the assets needed to impose a naval blockade did not exist. Recommissioning Frank E. Evans was part of a massive response to the outbreak of the Korean War.

The USS Frank E. Evans (DD 754) was equipped with all the latest communication, navigation and radar systems allowing her to serve with minimal casualties and with distinction through the Korean and Vietnam Wars until she met her fate at the hands of human error nineteen years later. Following a deployment to the Vietnam War the Frank E. Evans was assigned to the South China Sea as part of a Southeast Asia Treaty Organization exercise. During the exercise she was to operate in formation with a multinational fleet including the light aircraft carrier Her Majesty’s Australian Ship (HMAS) Melbourne (R21) of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and four other escorts: the US destroyers; the USS Everett F. Larson (DD-830); USS James E. Kyes (DD-787) , and the frigates Her Majesty’s New Zealand Ship (HMNZS) Blackpool (F77) and Her Majesty’s Ship (HMS) Cleopatra (F28). In the dark of night on 3 June 1969, the Frank E. Evans was ordered to a new escort station from in front of the MELBOURNE to the plane guard position behind the Melbourne.

Captain John Phillip Stevenson of the Melbourne was extremely sensitive to the dangers inherent in maneuvering ships in formation as five years earlier the Melbourne rammed and sank the RAN destroyer HMAS Voyager (D04), when the latter altered course across her bow. Eighty-two of Voyager’s personnel were killed. Captain Stevenson dined with all the escort captains and emphasized the importance of turning away from Melbourne’s bow when shifting stations from ahead to astern the carrier. Despite that warning, when the Frank E. Evans was ordered to plane guard position at 3 am her bridge personal turned her to port directly into the path of the Melbourne. The Melbourne sounded collision alerts and notified the bridge of the Frank E. Evans, but it was too late. The 22,000-ton Melbourne rammed into the 2,200-ton Frank E. Evans amidships. The force of the collision rolled the Frank E. Evans 90 degrees over and sheared her in two. The bow section then rolled upside down and sank in minutes while the stern section remained afloat. Seventy-four of Frank E. Evans crew were killed. Undoubtedly, many were spared because the stern section remained afloat.

The Court of Inquiry that followed became a bit of a circus as blame for the collision was placed on both ships, but there were charges that the American Admiral chairing the inquiry steered it to that conclusion. Whatever the conclusions of the Court of Inquiry 74 men died on a calm clear night when a state-of-the-art warship equipped with every navigational system available was turned directly into the path of another.

a/n ⁀➷ I wrote this about two or even three years ago... so i'm sorry if this meh but tbh i don't want to change anything either (maybe i'll do a new version some day) After watching „Gifted" I got the idea to write this „short story", I didn't take into account any temporal things like Mary's age.

They always tell you that you will find happiness.

Someday, one day, you will find it.

But I didn't find my happiness. It found me.

I wasn't looking for it, quite the opposite, I was done with it, I had agreed never to find it. I was ready to live my life without "happiness".

As terrible as it may sound, I had resigned myself to it. It was just the way it was.

At least that's what thought.

But anyone can be wrong sometimes, right?

It was June 16th 2017. My car was packed with all my belongings. The move was spontaneous, but never had I regretted it. It was a small thing that had made me do it. It was something so unimportant that it had not been or wouldn't ever be understandable to others.

It was a feeling, one that told me I was home now.

A place near Tampa, Florida. Small and beautiful, just as I had always wanted it to be.

The ocean was calming. Some days it was gentle and still and other days it was like a raging storm. One could think that the sea imitated our moods.

I lived in a bungalow among many others. It was so different, so new and it felt right. My life was simple and my heart was happy.

The days were the same, had a good rhythm and yet were never boring.

One day I met a little girl. I was going to hang up my laundry on the sunny side of the house to dry, when I tripped over a stone at the edge of the path between the bungalows and my laundry spread all over the ground. I had just been about to pick them up when a small hand handed me a shirt that was lying on the grass.

"Hi, I'm Mary." she said with the sweetest smile. Mary couldn't have been older than eight years old and yet she seemed much older to me. She told me that she lived in the house right next to me.

At that point, I had only lived there for a few weeks.

Mary told me that she lived with her uncle and was already going to university because she was gifted. We had made ourselves comfortable on the patch of grass next to the little path and the words just bubbled out of her. Mary looked so happy and joyful as she told me all the crazy stories she had already experienced in her short life.

She told me that she and her uncle had been watching me when I moved in. I had to giggle at the thought because I had seen them peeking through the window and it had been a really cute sight. She had her head propped up on his and I could see her talking energetically to him.

When Mary had left, she also left behind a cheerfulness that filled me throughout the whole day.

I saw her uncle often at the small bar in town. It wasn’t any hangout for old alcoholics; the bar had a certain charm. Everything was full of decorations and colorful lights. There were all kinds of pictures and all kinds of people.

But he was just sitting there at the bar with a beer in his hand.

He looked so utterly complete, as weird as that may sound. And even though his shirts always had a slight trace of oil, he looked attractive and not shabby. Maybe it was just those light oil marks that made him so interesting to me.

I had never been an extrovert. I prefer to be to myself rather than in a huge crowd. That's why I never approached him. Not because he was always surrounded by people, actually the opposite was the case, he always sat alone on the same bar stool. But the way he sat there gave off a quiet aura and I didn't dare to break into it.

Until one day, Mary had knocked on my door holding the hand of a very attractive guy, with light traces of oil on his shirt.

He had a crooked smile on his lips and looked a little insecure.

"Frank wants to ask you something." she had said, grinning at me and giving her uncle a warning look. „Yeah?" i smiled at her and then her uncle.

That had been the beginning of something beautiful.

When I think back to the time when I thought I was down on my luck, I have to smile. Happiness has found me. And it came with such force of which I could never have dreamed of. I did not find happiness. But happiness found me.

And in my case, it came in the person of a drop-dead cute, gifted little girl and her incredibly attractive, adorable uncle to find me.

If you ever doubt that you have lost happiness, always remember: It has not forgotten you, it is just waiting for the right moment. And when that time comes, you will be fully taken by it.

"Lillie? Is there a God?" she asked softly. Mary, Frank and I were snuggled up in a blanket on the beach, looking out into the setting summer sun.

I lifted my head from Frank's shoulder and looked down at her. "What do you think?" I asked her.

"I don't know." she said, shrugging her shoulders.

"You don't have to know. You have to feel it. If you can feel it in your heart, then he exists.“ I said, opening my arm for her, „Everyone has to decide that for themselves."

She snuggled into my arm, and I gently stroked her blonde hair. Frank's strong arm was wrapped around my shoulder as he kissed my hair.

"I think he brought us together. Like a family." she whispered looking up to me and Frank.

My little piece of bliss.

Band of Brothers Ages: IRL vs. Actors

Did you know that according to a 1947 study, almost half the men who served in WWII were still under age 26 by the end of the war?

What this is : A (very long) post comparing the ages of the actors in Band of Brothers vs. the IRL figures they are portraying.

Background: Did I need to do this? No. Did anyone ask for this? Also no. Did I do it anyway? Yes.

Disclaimers: This is SUPER approximate for the most part. I based IRL ages off of D-Day unless otherwise noted, and actor ages off of January 1, 2000, the year filming took place (the latter is where the most variation will be because I didn't try to figure out what month filming started). I also didn't fact-check birthdays beyond googling. Most are sourced from the Band of Brothers and Military Wikis on fandom.com, Wikipedia, and IMDb.

One Wednesday evening Pattie, George and I went to Hollywood’s Western Recording Studios at the invitation of Frank Sinatra. We watched him work through his session. Afterwards he took us all out for dinner on Sunset Strip and we had a fascinating time listening to his stories and gags. There’s an evening I won’t forget!” - Mal Evans, The Beatles Monthly, January 1969 “[W]e went along with his road manager, Mal Evans, and we went to the recording studio, and in the studio itself, it was — they had a full orchestra, and we went upstairs to the control room, where Frank was, and the engineer, and the producer, and Frank said hello to George and me, and then he said he was just going to go down into the studio to record. So this was really exciting, and we were looking through the big glass window, looking down at him there and the orchestra, and he sang ‘My Way.’ [gasps] This is absolutely wonderful, this is incredible. So he came upstairs, listened to it, we all listened to it, and he said, ‘That’s it, we’re going out for a drink now.’ And it’s as if he had done it just in one take. Who knows, you know, whether they’d done it a few times before we arrived, I don’t know, but in my mind, and George’s, he’d done it in just one take. So it was supreme, it was fabulous. And then off we went to a club, and there was this long table where Frank sat down. George was about to sit next to him, and one of his big guys said, ‘No, no, no, you can’t sit next to Frank.’ So George had to sit a couple of chairs away. I was at the other end with somebody from New York with a very strong accent, and they all had their own bottles of various whiskey in front of them. Sinatra went on to record a cover of George’s song “Something" in 1970, calling the Harrisong “the greatest love song of the past fifty years.” “‘They all say that "Something” was inspired by Patti [sic - Pattie] but it wasn’t really,’ George confides with an impish chortle. 'She was my wife at the time, but when I wrote that I had Ray Charles in my head. I always imagined Ray singing it, and eventually he did record it. There was a period of time when that became a Muzak tune; you’d hear it in elevators and I started feeling a bit embarrassed, but now I’m back into it and so happy to have written it.’ ‘Sinatra was doing it for years,’ he notes slyly, 'so now I always think of Frank Sinatra when I’m doing it.
