fic recs: archive edition 23

Well, everyone. It's mid-season hiatus time. Three long weeks (well, two and a half by the time I'm writing this) until our blorbos return. But do you know what you have time for during this hiatus? Reading some long fics!

I'm going to recommend one 90k and one 150k fic today. Both are absolute staples of 911 fanfiction, in my opinion, to the point that when I recently saw someone comment that they didn't know one of them I was genuinely surprised and a bit envious. To be able to experience these for the first time again would be amazing! So if you haven't read them yet, go forth and enjoy, and if you have, now is an excellent time for a reread!

Your Fingerprints Smeared on My Heart (Lead Me Back to You) by @letmetellyouaboutmyfeels Or, the cowboy reincarnation fic. In 1880, Evan Buckley is sent out west to oversee his family's railroad project, and meets Eddie Diaz, a cowboy who resents the way railroads and other modernities slowly are making his job impossible to do. In 2018, Evan Buckley walks into the 118 firehouse and meets Eddie Diaz, new recruit. Do I even need to introduce this more? The gilded age, soulmates, and a wish to find each other in every life - what more could you ask for! 88.5k words, rated E

tell me about despair by @hattalove Or, the unrepression fic. Eddie is trying, he really is, to tick off all the boxes of what's expected of him, but it turns out simply existing can be too hard when your heart actually wants to live. But both falling apart and healing happens in increments, and sometimes confronting yourself in the process of getting better can the hardest thing you've ever had to do, but it's worth it for the way you can breathe more freely afterwards. Not enough good words exist to be said about this fic. Eddie's journey to accepting himself is anguishing and makes me cry, and is so, so good! I can't accurately describe this fic, so if something about this doesn't sound appealing, rest assured that is my fault and not the fic's! 148.9k words, rated M

He presses Buck’s head down to where it was resting on his chest, and wraps the arm he has under Buck around his waist. He holds Buck by his bicep with his other hand to pull him closer to his side, slides a leg between Buck’s thighs, and manhandles Buck so Buck is laying half on Tommy’s chest, half pressed against his side. “Just want to hold you, kid.” * In which Buck and Tommy cuddle. category: the most underrated fics that have never once left my mind since I first read them and I genuinely think about at least every few weeks in no particular order

(disclaimer that this list does not include a great majority of my beloveds' works but that's because I picked at random from the list of at least 30 that I've compiled over the past few days)

Buck’s voice rings softly in the quiet. A casual lilt on his tongue as he says his name.

“Hm?”

“Tell you something?”

Shrugging, Eddie keeps his eyes fixed at the ceiling above him.

“We got time.”

“I’m good at multitasking,” Buck says, and Eddie can practically hear him shrugging over the phone. “I did all the cooking after I put Chris to bed, and then I got up a little earlier to get the cleaning and laundry done. It was nothing.”

Eddie’s starting to suspect he’ll have to wait for Buck to come back to make him understand that, actually, it kind of was everything.

It’s something about the way Eddie phrases it. Something about the combination of his words and the way he’s staring down at the floor, and the flush in his cheeks and the way he’s fidgeting. Buck thinks, abruptly, he’s going to ask me on a date.

“Well I - wanted to tell you first, and I need someone to watch Chris, anyways - I know he’s getting old enough now he doesn’t like feeling like he’s got a babysitter, so I was hoping - sorry. Not the point. Uh. I have a date on Saturday.”

Just as abruptly as his own hopes had come soaring up above the cloud cover of his own unawareness - they go crashing back down to the floor - to the basement, and into the mud. “A date?” Buck rasps out.

or - the one where eddie decides to start dating again, buck figures out his own feelings just a minute too late, and then he spends a week going through the five stages of grief

"Buck!" Eddie yelled as he turned his key in the loft door and dumped his suitcase inside.

He immediately got a startled "Eddie?" in response, and thank God for that because if Buck had been out running errands it would have been the last damn straw. But he was here, where Eddie needed him to be, and pounding down the stairs from the stupid platform thing he had instead of a normal bedroom. "Is everything OK?"

"No! You won't answer your goddamn phone and my house is full of bees."

There’s a flicker of something across Buck’s face, but he quickly goes back to grinning. “You just want me at your beck and call.”

“Maybe I do.” Eddie shrugs. “You owe it to me.”

Buck sighs, as if put out, but Eddie can see the glimmer of amusement in his eyes. “Okay, then what's it gonna be?”

Eddie hums thoughtfully. He takes his time trying to think of something good. “What about-” he starts.

And that’s the moment Buck licks his lips and Eddie’s eyes dip down to them. And before he knows what comes over him, before he can think the words through, they’re out of his mouth.

“A kiss,” he says.

Buck blinks at him. Eddie blinks back.

“You want a kiss,” Buck repeats, eyebrows rising.

“Oh no, we’re not doing this.” Chimney pops a bubble with the gum he’s been chewing as he moves one of his fingers back and forth to point between The-Man-who-isn’t-Buck’s-man-he’s-just-The-Man and Buck. “You didn’t drag me to the gym just so you can ditch me to fuck some guy in the showers."

Buck lowers his voice, leaning forward as if trying to make the words’s journey shorter between him and Chimney so they can’t escape and reach anyone else’s ears,“I wouldn’t fuck him in the showers.”

Chimney’s response is wordless in the form of an eyebrow raise.

“Not anymore, okay?” Buck clarifies, rolling his eyes. “That’s not who I am now."

(spoiler alert: Buck does fuck the guy in the showers. but that comes after nicknaming him Big Beautiful Brown Eyes, finding out his name is actually Eddie, becoming his best friend, and falling madly in love with him.)

The A-shift works 4/20, Buck gets accidentally high, and Eddie suffers.

When Buck tells him that he’s engaging in a “year of possibilities” in which he isn’t saying to no anything, Eddie isn’t surprised. It’s exactly the kind of thing Buck would get himself into to break this slump he says he’s been in. He’s changing his life, or so he says.

The man — and it is Eddie Diaz, Buck can’t not see it now — blinks, and in a split second his expression shutters closed. “Buckley.”

The 118 is a close-knit family. It’s not surprising given how much time they spend together: endless hours at the firehouse, barbecues on the weekends, the occasional night at the bar. They’re a family, yes… but Buck and Eddie don’t have to tell them everything. They’re allowed their secrets, really, and it’s not… weird. Really, it’s not. It’s just that sometimes the 118 asks too many questions, and sometimes there’s just no good (or clear or logical) way to explain. Exhibit A: How Buck ended up in Eddie’s bed during a sleepover (and how he’s been sleeping there most nights since). Or: Buck and Eddie comfort each other with cuddles, hugs, and kisses (platonically—or so they think).

Buck was supposed to come home in a couple months, pretty close to Eddie's birthday. He was finishing his tour with the Navy and then they'll get their happy ending. That's how it was supposed to go.

Then two officers showed up at Eddie's door with a flag and thanking his husband for serving their country.

And everything changed.

There's silence on the other line for longer than it's normal and Buck is about to check if Hen hang up on him when someone finally speaks— and Buck suddenly feels sick to his stomach. "Okay." Says the voice that is certainly not Hen's. The voice that's been haunting Buck's every dream for forever. "Eddie?" Buck chokes out, stuttering and hoping to God it's not him. "Yeah…" Of course it is..Buck looks up at his ceiling again, cursing the damn universe and its awful sense of humor. He's sure its laughing at him at this point. "Why? D-Did you mean to call someone else?"

or: Buck's date cancels but he has already made the restaurant reservation, so he decides to call Hen and ask if she'd like to take Karen there. He dials the wrong number. It all works in the end.

honorary mention to famous buck au bc it might not fit in any of this categories but it's still one of my fave fics i've written:

Buck hesitates for a few seconds and then Eddie sees the exact moment he decides 'fuck it' as he straightens in his seat. "There was this guy in high school. He was my best friend." Wait. Hold on. Eddie freezes. Is Buck— Is Buck talking about him? or: In which Eddie finds out years later that his unrequited feelings for his high school best friend were not actually unrequited, Buck is stupidly famous now and they pine. They get there in the end, they just need to get their timing right. Inspired by the prompt: “you’re famous and just got asked if you were ever in love this should be good– WAIT WHAT."

Slowly, Buck sipped at his coffee and turned around. Bobby was still hovering outside of his office, frozen with his door on the handle. Eddie was stopped halfway up the stairs. Chimney and Hen both had death grips on chairs as they stared at him. Ravi just looked…confused.

Insecurity flooded Buck in an instant, bitter in his mouth and tight around his chest. He gave a nervous laugh and held his coffee up, as if it could fend off whatever was about to happen. “What, uh…what are we all staring at?”

Eddie’s expression was slowly morphing into one of irritation and Buck watched Hen’s face go carefully neutral. She cleared her throat. “Is that a new hoodie?” she asked, her voice far too casual.

“Uh…no?” Buck frowned. “Pretty sure this is the same standard issue hoodie that all of us got.”

“It’s not,” Chimney blurted, and Hen elbowed him in the ribs.

“Is this about my fashion choices,” Buck laughed. “I know it’s a little baggy but come on guys.”

“It’s not…not about your fashion choices,” Hen said carefully.

Buck stared at everyone, all frozen in various expressions of confusion. “That’s really cryptic,” Buck replied, taking another sip of his coffee. “This is about the hoodie?”

Everyone nodded.

Rolling his eyes, Buck put his coffee down and tugged the hoodie over his shoulders to hold it out in front of him. “See!” He exclaimed. “Standard issue…” he trailed off, staring at the back of the hoodie. Emblazoned on it in big bold letters was KINARD.
