modern ellie head cannons!

- Ellie would definitely do photography, i mean we SAW photos of dina in her art room and around the house, the photograph of her, Jesse, and dina, i think she'd LOVE to do photography! just as a fun hobby. she definitely has one of those small 60 dollar grainy cameras that she carries around, snapping pictures of anything

-speaking of photos, she definitely would snap pictures of you! she would hang them up around her room, next to her bed or in a small little frame. Like, you standing in the kitchen, sleeping, if you play an instrument, studying, kissing, anything.

- I also think she LOVES hiking, camping, anything involving the wilderness. She could definitely live out there if she wanted too.

-again, topic of wilderness, she probably just grabs random animals and bugs. Like those people who are genuinely NOT scared of the everglades, shes just casually picking up a snake and grinning like she won a TROPHY.

-this might b a reach but, since shes an artistic person, she would probably be super good at makeup. not that she wears it as often, and if she does its just black eyeshadow, maybe blush and her brows. but theres definitely been a few times shes done your makeup and its turned out BETTER then you can even do it.

- her artistic talent has definitely lead to her doing super cute projects, gifts, and activities. Her gifts are 80 percent of the time hand made. she could definitely make some really nice rings, necklaces, everything out of random stones. she would come across something on pinterest and save it into some folder which is filled with things.

- facebook user.

-now if shes working i feel like her jobs could really vary. definitely not a barista because she doesn't like coffee, she prefers tea for sure, but she's definitely in something more artistic or musically involved. Like a record shop, guitar center, book store, maybe a pottery shop where you can MAKE your own pottery, or a jewelry store.

- her room would be a mess. jewelry everywhere, clothes tossed around, random shit tapped to her wall, anything you can think of its THERE.

- a million people have said it before but.. she shit posts like, crazy. She might have a main account for her instagram and she either shit posts to her main story or close friends. OR she has a private spam account, mainly used for stirring shit up with people.

-shes a tea girl! like sweet tea, iced tea, chamomile, green tea, chai, anything TEA wise. she owns it. she probably has some dumb cup specifically for tea, like cups from Spencer's.

- i feel like shes a collector, like bottle caps, pennies, gems, or guitars (if she has that money, but she's definitely broke.)

- definitely a stoner

- as stated like way before, she likes the wilderness, she would LOVE the beach.

- has a old vans shoe box, filledddd with shit from you if youre the gift giving type!

- wears vans or converse, but doesnt even skateboard, just likes the look.

- nails are constantly painted, dark, earthy colors tho, she wouldnt have long nails either, theyre trimmed short because, 1. she hates the feeling of long nails, 2. playing guitar with long nails SUCKS. 3. 🏳️‍🌈

| ❀ | loser!ellie who took you out for sushi as the first stop on your date, to which she graciously paid for even with you fighting to put your card down on the table first. she looked so adorable with her little california roll, and even cuter when she accidentally got too much wasabi in a bite and was fiending for water while simultaneously trying to play it cool in front of you. you just laughed which immediately made her feel better about the whole thing.

| 𓆣 | loser!ellie who then took you to your town’s expansive park to walk the dirt trails and just talk. neither of you had ever gotten along with someone so well, the conversation was absolutely effortless. you talked about all your interests, funny life stories, your fears, and so much more. ellie listened attentively with nods and affirmations throughout which made you feel so cared for, something most girls on dating apps could never do. you extended the courtesy back and ellie told you all about her own stuff, including her obsession with space, to which she pulled out her favorite book on the topic to show you. space had never really piqued your interest before, but when it was coming out of the freckled girl's mouth, it seemed like the coolest thing in the world.

| ❀ | loser!ellie who sat next to you on one of the park’s wooden benches. time had flown by and neither of you had realized until your head was resting on her shoulder as the sun set in front of you. the orange cast hit her auburn hair just right and it looked like she was practically glowing. you couldn’t help but stare at her beauty which she noticed and with a concerned look questioned if she had anything on her face. you informed ellie of the trance she had put you in and she blushed the color of your pink nails just before leaning in to give you the most tender, loving kiss you’d ever received.

| 𓆣 | loser!ellie who couldn’t stop kissing you once she started. your lips remained locked with hers for a solid 5 minutes, lips puffy and saliva exchanging, until the sound of a dog barking a few feet away broke the exchange. the energy had shifted in the best way possible and the both of you quickly opened up about how much you liked one another. one thing lead to another and suddenly ellie has out her pocket knife and is carving an E + R (reader) into the wood of the park bench. how lesbian of you guys ♡

| ❀ | loser!ellie who didn’t want the date to end and you were right there with her, so you somehow found yourselves in an empty parking lot at 9:00pm, drinking slurpees while she tried to teach you how to skate. it started off as a real attempt with her teaching you the basics like where to put your feet and the importance of bending your knees. after about 4 different falls onto the dirty asphalt you gave up on your genuine pursuits. discouraged, you sat right down on the board, knees up, before ellie gave you a push and you rolled across the lot. she was laughing her ass off and you were too until you hit a bump and tumbled off.

| 𓆣 | loser!ellie who bolted into the CVS the parking lot belonged to and bought a bunch of unnecessary first aid items for the small cut on your knee. she came back out of the sliding doors and you died of laughter as she pulled out a box of peppa pig bandaids for your skating “injury”. ellie insisted you needed to be taken care of though, so you let her do her thing and she finished it off with a small peck to the cap of your knee and one on your forehead.

| ❀ | loser!ellie who spent the trip back to your place with one hand on the wheel and the other on your thigh, driving you absolutely wild. you almost had to remind yourself that this was just the first date.

| 𓆣 | loser!ellie who had been parked in your driveway for 10 minutes already but continued to stall your departure with more of her shenanigans. soon she ran out of things to say though and leaned over to kiss you goodbye. this goodbye turned into more and you ended up in her lap before the night was over. it wasn’t until your back hit the steering wheel making the car honk that you finally exited the vehicle.

You still weren't used to this, any of it, and nights like this one reminded you of that fact. The wind caused a whistling sound against the windows that frightened you awake when you were on the verge of sleep. This was nothing compared to the creaking sounds of the old farmhouse that only seemed to happen when you were already paranoid. It helped to have Ellie with you, her presence alone calmed you, made you feel safer. You were safe though, safer than you had been in months. It was just going to take a while to get used to that off-putting feeling of security. You laid awake with your eyes open, staring in the dark at the cracked window that was causing the noises.

You squinted at it, wondering who had left it open and why you'd let yourself get so startled by something as silly as wind blowing through an open window once again. Staring at it wouldn't make it close though and you pulled yourself out of bed to shut it. The moment you brought the window down the noises stopped, leaving the room almost unsettlingly quiet.

You turned around then, spurred on by the silence to face the bed again, searching the cream colored sheets for any sign of Ellie. Your heart beat could be felt through your whole body then. She couldn't have gone far, only an hour ago you were laying side-by-side, sharing body heat and exhales.

"Ellie?" You said into the empty room. It was dark but you knew the layout of your farmhouse well enough to get to where you were going.

You creaked the door open, looking down the short hall to the bathroom. It was slightly open, enough for you to tell no one was inside. You continued out, heading to Ellie's dedicated art room. You'd found her here pretty late in the night a few times before. It happened especially when she was far away in her head. She would lose track of time while hyper focused on her art. Most of the time you let her just until you felt yourself getting tired, then you would finally interrupt to take her to bed with you. You would stroke her hair as she fell asleep, staring at her peaceful face in the darkness. It worried you sometimes, how quiet she got.

Walking in you were met with many versions of your own face. Some pinned in place on the wall and some leaning against it, stapled to canvas. She loved to paint and draw you, it was a love language of sorts and you grew to appreciate it more than anything else. You couldn't imagine a more pure

deceleration of love than to create art in another's image. You felt butterflies every time you thought of her admiring you in that way, so intimately. The room was messy with miscellaneous items, strewn all over the floor and collected in crates with no obvious organization. it had been like this since you found the place, she never took the time to sort through all of her things, and put them where they should be. Still, you never took it upon yourself to touch anything in that room. it was her safe place and you wanted to keep it that way.

The next place to check was downstairs. As you traveled down, felt the air grow colder. You shivered at feeling the coolness on your bare legs and arms, it made you want to hurry back to bed. Not without Ellie though.

"Ellie?" You called out louder than you had before, stepping into the dining room.

Ellie's plate was still there from dinner. She always forgot to clean up after herself but you didn't mind doing it for her. after all that time, you both spent surviving it felt good to live. To have dirty dishes and laundry to be annoyed and not wounds that required stitches and left deep scars. You grabbed the plate and brought it to the sink, placing it as quietly as you could. You were starting to get nervous now. Your chest feeling tight as you wandered. She had to be here. Nothing bad was supposed to happen to either of you while you were here, she promised you that.

The living room was left. It was your favorite part of the house so far. You'd put so much effort into decorating it. Putting things together as nicely as you could like you'd seen in magazines from before. Ellie thought it was a bit silly how much effort you put into getting everything together but in the end she was able to appreciate it too, mostly because it made you happy. She loved seeing you happy.

A sigh of relief passed through you when you saw her. It felt like something heavy had been lifted off of you and you were endlessly grateful.

"What are you doing in here? I was looking for you." You told her. She was standing near the window with her back to you. Her short hair still a little messy from being in bed. When you were close enough you reached up to run a hand through it which caused her to flinch away from your touched. Shocked, you took a step back, your lips parted in confusion.

"Ellie, look at me." You said to her softly. You gave her about half a second before your hands were on her shoulder, pulling her to turn and face you.

When you did your saw how wet her face was by the moonlight pouring in. Her cheeks were reddened and her eyes glossy and darkened like a pond at night. You could tell she'd cried, hard, even if she hadn't noticed it herself. Aside from that you noticed the distraught look in her eyes as she looked at you. More accurately, looked straight past you.

"Come sit with me, okay?" You said to her, grabbing a trembling hand to guide her over to the couch with you. She let out a shaky breath, almost getting a word out but failing miserably. You rubbed your thumb over her knuckles to let her know that it was okay. That she didn't have to say or do anything.

"Just breathe for me, I'm here, you're safe." You reminded her. Her eyebrows were still drawn together tightly as she looked down at her hands, they were still trembling quite a bit and just the sight of them seemed to upset her. All you could think to do was grab them in your own to keep them steady. She was warm to the touch.

You wondered what was on her mind then, what she remembered that pained her so much. You probably couldn't even begin to understand. You let her rest her head against your chest when she was able to. You brought a gentle hand to hold her there, stroking over her hair soothingly as she let her tears fall silently without trying to stop them. She had seen things that changed her, things she wouldn't tell you about because she didn't think you needed to know. You never pried, only listening when she needed you to. She had done things that she hated herself for and sometimes you feared that you'd never know why. You weren't scared of Ellie, not once had you ever been in all your years of knowing her, but you were starting to think that maybe she was scared of herself. She knew that the destruction that she was capable of left no room for forgiveness. Still, even with all that she dragged herself through, nothing compared to what she was forced to be witness to.

It was always worse each time she had to feel it all over again.

It made her whole body ache and grow numb all at the same time. A sick feeling formed in the pit of her stomach that stopped her from being able to breathe correctly. She'd cry out for someone to save her, for anyone to take those memories back so she could finally relax after all this time but no one could. Her fists would never unclench and the heavy metal chains of revenge were unmerciful and stronger than she could ever hope to be. Her redemption would never come as long as she was like this, no matter how much she laid awake at night hoping to move on from what she's done, she still lusted for the same brutality that broke her down into what she was now.

She listened to you hum to her and whisper sweet words. As she tried to slow her own breathing down, she followed the lead of yours. Calm and steady.

"You're okay, we're okay." You told her. She tried her hardest to believe you. Focusing on your voice and the delicate feeling of her hands on her, she melted down into something more manageable. In and out became less of a challenge and more of a natural bodily function. She slid her hands under your shirt, resting there just to feel the rise and fall. With her eyes closed there was finally darkness and nothing else.

"I'm sorry I'm a mess." Ellie finally said when she felt like a person again. The sun was rising now. You almost didn't respond, you hadn't heard her speak actual words in hours. The bright feeling you got just from hearing her voice broke you out of whatever haze you were in.

"You're my mess." You said looking down at her fondly. Her eyes were so sincere as they gazed into yours. Like your souls were touching somehow. You couldn't imagine feeling like this with anyone else. Ellie was strong. The strongest person that you had ever known, but she was still human, fragile under her exterior. When it slipped you always wanted to be there for her.

"We're gonna be okay soon." You promised her, placing an innocent kiss to her freckled cheek. She sat impossibly close to you, your skin starting sweat against hers but you both couldn't care less. It felt right.

She wasn't sure yet how soon "soon" would be, and neither were you. All that she hoped was that she'd last that long with her rage sitting dormant.

My dms are open! If you have ideas and want to do them with me feel free to reach out! I am open to trying other fandoms other than what I have listed, so feel free to suggest things. If I don't know the fandom/haven't finished whatever it is then I will let you know. If is your decision from there whether you wish to continue or find someone better suited.

Communicate with me! I will not know what is going on if you don't communicate. If there's a scene you want to do, if you have to be offline for a while, etc don't be afraid to talk to me! I will do the same.

I welcome any and all identity headcanons except if you make gay characters straight. I often headcanon characters as trans myself.

I am open to ship suggestions, I will tell you if it makes me uncomfortable but if you suggest an obviously problematic ship I will simply block you.

I prefer long responses, but I will try my best to match whatever length you use.

I will not play abusive characters if they are a main character. If they're a side character that is fine, but if they are a main character I won't do it.

I do not have triggers but if you're going to include something that could be triggering please warn me first, it makes me uncomfortable when those kinds of things are suddenly sprung on me.

If you do not follow these rules you will be given a max of three warnings before I will just block you and/or stop replying.

It is true I have read all of moon knight comics. It is also true I have a serious memory problem.

BUT. General consensus, and I agree 100%, is that you need to read the Lemire x Smallwood run.

I'm going to be controversial. Start with Ellis (see long rant below to see why). 100% read Lemire. If you read nothing else, read Lemire. Then read Mackay.

I also recommend you pick up and read some of the original stuff, just to see where it all started. There's a lot of it. It suffers from old comic book syndrome, but some of it is really quite good and beautiful.

If you REALLY want to know more... Here's a Brief Timeline!

So the first Moon Knight was in Werewolf by Night, in which he was hired to hunt down Jack Russel.

They liked his character and design and he got his own comic!

This is the Moench run collection that spanned from the 70s through the 80s.

Then there was a long dry spell. LONG dry spell. He popped up now and then in the background and various other one shots.

But then Huston got his mits on him in 2006 with "The Bottom"

This is actually where I started because it is the more modern run.

However, this period is also very rough. He's called Schizophrenic, they use outdated terminology (Multiple Personality instead of DID). It highlights the crazy aspect and is very violent oriented.

But it's also a little fun and there are a lot of good classic moments found in these runs. You are also going to start finding some pretty amazing artwork in these runs (Deodato!)

The Huston and later Benson runs (The Bottom, Midnight Sun, God and Country, Death of Marc Spector, and Down South) are a good look at how messed up Marc lets himself get. Full of angst and him pushing people away. You don't see a lot of Steven and very little Jake in these. Marc is crawling through his mental health issues and you also get a look at his relationship with Marlene.

NEXT: 2009. The Hurwitz runs! (Shock and Awe, Killed Not Dead, and Shadowland.)

This run was actually pretty good. If memory serves me well (and it doesn't), I enjoyed the stories that were told here. You get a more messed up Marc, but Marc was TRYING. You see him struggle with his mental health and struggle to do good.

PLUS. Shock and Awe has THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ART. I loved the design of his suit and it showed peak Marc Spector fighting style of "I'm just going to throw my body at things until they don't get back up". You also get to see him interacting with other Marvel characters (Avengers, Captain America, Punisher, ect.). This is always interesting because they don't know what to do with him. You start to see the ableism set in and how much he's not just fighting himself but he's also fighting how others see him.

NEXT UP: 2011. Bendis. "The Heroic Age". This man nearly ended Moon Knight. It was bad. IT WAS SO BAD. No one talks about this run. It didn't happen. Skip it. Don't even pretend to buy it. If you want it, steal it. Get it from the library. Don't waste your money.

Bendis labled Moon Knight a Psychophrenic lunatic, sent him to L.A. to work on a 'team' then messed up his whole characterization and everything he stood for. It was bad.

NOTICE THE GAP HERE. NEXT RUN WASN'T UNTIL 2014!!!! That's how bad Bendis fucked up.

Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey took Moon Knight over in "From the Dead".

The story here is seriously lacking, but the art is amazing. This is ALSO where you are going to meet Mr. Knight for the first time and he is glorious.

Ellis is known in comic land for writing some of the darkest Punisher content that Marvel put out. He's known for blood and guts and violence. So… just keep that in mind.

But here we see someone that refuses to acknowledge who he is. There is no Steven Grant, no Jake Lockley, and he refuses Marc Spector. This is a man that had a serious mental break and is clawing up from the mudd and trying so hard to fix himself by not being himself. One might even say he's in a dissociative state this whole run.

Next we have "Dead Will Rise" by Brian Wood and Smallwood. It follows where Ellis left off and you start to get some of that Delicious Smallwood art. The story does pick up a bit here, but it's still very ambiguous and barely holds the Moon Knight title.

You see, Bendis really fucked up things and they didn't want him to be seen as "That crazy guy" anymore. So they play it safe and you get more of the original supernatural stuff that happened back in the day with Werewolf by night.

"In the Night" is next in this series by Cullen Bunn and Ron Ackins. Again, art is pretty good here and you start to get some of the old Marc Spector back in this. He crashes more vehicles and you see his reckless style start to creep back in. Story is still barely there, but it's descent. Again, we see Marc start to decline in mental health. He's alone, he's destructive, he's violent.

NEXT UP: 2016. ENTER LEMIRE. Bless this man.

Lemire saw the Smallwood art in "Dead will Rise". Smallwood loved working on Moon Knight.

But Smallwood is a busy man in the comic universe. Lemire knew Smallwood was going to struggle to keep up with the schedule. And Lemire had a hell of a story to tell.

THIS MAN. He broke his story up into three other parts and hired three other artists that had VERY unique and distinctive styles.

This let him break his story up so that you knew each part by the art!!

WTF. When the story was important and back on the main plot, Smallwood would come back in and tell it with his smooth and amazing art.

Then as the series progresses and gets more and more into it, you see all the art styles crash into the pages until he brings it back home in one final breath taking scene where Smallwood collects them again and sends them off.

Gonna fucking cry here. Gimme a minute.

So anyways: The Lemire run. (Lunatic, Reincarnations, Birth and Death.) Three volumes in which we see Marc Spector's mental break down, the fall out, and how he builds himself back up. We see his friends from the past, we see Steven and Jake find their place, and we see Marc start to accept that he is a broken man. It's a beautiful story. It's hard to follow sometimes and a little confusing at first, but once you get to the end it all makes sense and it's so beautiful. Lemire is what inspired the MCU show, in case you were unaware.

Ugh. Next. BEMIS. 2017. Fucking Bemis. "Legacy" (Crazy runs in the family and Phases) Bemis took what Lemire did and shit all over it. I swear this man did no research into the character. He just went, "Crazy huh? What if he's SUPER CRAZY AND EATS RABID DOLPHINS" (this happened. I'm not kidding). He tries to reboot Moon Knight. He fucking UGH. He tries to explain what caused his DID. He just… UGH. Antisemetic bullshit and he should have known better. UGH. Only good thing to come out of it is that you find out Marc and Marlene had a daughter and she's pretty badass.

Then in 2018 we got "Avengers Age of Khonshu" by Jason Aaron. This was a marvel tie in event. I have THOUGHTS about tie in events and none of them are good. Basically Khonshu tries to take over the world. He uses Marc. Now the Avengers think Moon Knight is a threat and needs to be watched in case his god tries to do anything again. Khonshu gets locked up in Asgard and Marc is now on his own.

Jason Aaron, much like Ellis, is also known for his incredibly dark and gritty comics. He also did Punisher Max and is a huge name in the comic world, but you have to have the stomach for him. I guarantee there will be vomit, spitting, and blood in everything he does. It's like a trademark.

This brings us to 2021" MACKAY! (Midnight Mission, Too Tough to Die, and Halfway to Sanity)

Mackay looks back at Lemire and goes, "Hey… what happened?" This man does the unthinkable. He doesn't reboot. He starts with the Mr. Knight that was given to us by Ellis and Wood, takes the story that Lemire gave us, and then acknowledges the bad in Bemis and Aaron.

HE TIES IT ALL TOGETHER. We see Marc that has started his heaing journey from Lemire but stumbled into his old bad habbits from Bemis. We see Marc trying to repair his reputation from Aaron and desperate to hate himself and forget himself.

We see him build back to his old habbits until Jake and Steven re-enter the picture and I couldn't be happier with how he does it.

He understands and runs with real DID awareness. He talks about Marc's PTSD. He lets the work as a system. He tells a story. He's bringing in Fucking Dracula. This man knows his memes.

The run is still going and I am excited to see what he does next. Can he just keep Moon Knight in his pocket for a while? I would love that. Just… Let him hold him a while longer.

.........TLDR: Depends on what you like. If you are new to comics and just want to get your food in the door, read Lemire then skip to Mackay.

If you like what you see and want to get more in depth. You want to know who Frenchie and Gena are (I love them so much) dip your toe into the early stuff with the OG Moench. If you want to see where Marc started to break down and a more modern Moon Knight came about, go to Huston and work your way through it. If you just want to see enough to get you to Mackay, start with Ellis.

Well hello there, buttercup(s)!!

I hope y'all are having a lovely day out there 😊 Here's the dealio, I need new people to talk to. Badly 😅 Last summer I was finally able to escape a manipulative 2+ year relationship that didn't really let me have friends. Now, I've been healing, I'm in a lovely relationship, and I'm looking to find some new people to chat with!

The only real rules I have are no minors and no dry convos! Seriously, if you get me going, I can send paragraphs. You do not have to be that invested, but I can't take small talk every time.

So now, where do I start?

My name's Ally! I'm 24, a bi gal from the North East US. I have a cat named Eleanor Rigby, or Ellie for short. I recently moved in with my S/O, but I will soon be bringing over my other cat, a deaf boi named Logan. I'm a huge animal lover, so please spam me with photos of your animals!

At heart, I'd say I'm an artist. I do love to look at things from a different perspective, and one trait I'm confident about is that I am creative! It's been a lot harder for me to truly focus on my arts the past few years, but I'm finally starting to get back into the swing of things. When I feel the pull, I write, paint, Doodle, crochet, collage, journal, take photos, makeup, and creating in general. That's certainly not all as I love to try new things, but those are my favorites at the moment

I'm also a neopagan witch! I've been in the Practice for about 9 years, but I have been through a rollercoaster with it. I'm finally able to have time to sit and study, so I would love anyone to talk to about that! I have traces of Hellenic polytheism in my faith, but I'm very eclectic and my beliefs are pretty consistently changing. I respect all walks of life as long as you respect mine and do not harm anyone, including yourself. I am also very eclectic in my studies of the Craft. I am always open to new information, so please, enlighten me!

I'm also a stoner, so any 4/20 friends are rad :) I tend to be an oddball with a somewhat dark sense of humor, but I also like to try and be somewhat positive and bubbly. It depends on the day.

A+ youtube video! I feel like this is a dumb question, but what other sources, exercises, etc would you suggest for a writer wanting to get better at, like, everything you do in that video? I feel like I'm just not intelligent when it comes to writing and reading. I slap down whatever seems fun and I'm sure it makes for a bland story full of stupid plot holes and everything you talked about, so how does one get better at dissecting this stuff and...writing/reading intelligently?

Thank you so much!! There’s a tendency to consider analytical people just “smart”, as if the observations they make come naturally to them. But that super isn’t true: being thoughtful and critical about media, like drawing or writing or playing a sport or learning an instrument, is a skill that you pick up by absorbing reference, learning the language of the art form, and then practicing replicating it through your own perspective.

ABSORBING REFERENCE

My two biggest critical inspirations are Lindsay Ellis, a video essayist who covers film and culture, and Film Crit Hulk, a screenwriter and movie critic, and I’ve been consuming their work since I was 15. (I’m 25 now! that’s a wholeass decade.) I've picked up many, may other sources along the way: other video essayists, pop culture commentators, TV critics, spirited roasts of 50 shades of gray, actual “writing craft” books and blog articles, long goodreads reviews of books I thought I had a pretty good grasp of the flaws on, funny booktube reviews, even “anti” posts. I read “how the last season of game of thrones went the fuck off the rails” articles til my eyes bled, not because I cared about game of thrones, but because there was so much good, insightful reporting being done on How And Why A Story Fell Apart.

LEARNING THE LANGUAGE

Not all of this is good or useful. There’s a lot of bad faith or shallow criticism out there. The cinemasins clickbaity style of nitpicking “plot holes” or penalizing a work for the mere presence of tropes without regard for broader artistic intent and cultural context is particularly insidious and should die. The people who think twilight is stupid because it has sparkly vampires are missing the point. A LOT of people critique YA in particular from a place of bitterness or bias or misplaced expectations (and so did I, to some degree, for a long time. I’ve worked really hard to grow out of that, I hope). But the point is to seek out content in this vein-- not what I consumed necessarily (I would not wish that many GOT thinkpieces on anyone), but stuff that interests you. The more of this you mindfully consume and the more perspectives you collect and compare, the more context you’ll have for what’s being discussed and the more you'll naturally start to form your own opinions on it. You will learn, slowly, by osmosis, to pull what strikes a chord with you from the noise.

REPLICATING IT THROUGH YOUR OWN PERSPECTIVE

The cool and fun part is that to some extent, your brain will start doing this on its own. You’ll read a book and you'll just notice more. You’ll call plot twists faster, or be more cognizant of the pacing, or connect dots you might not have otherwise connected. You’ll see the logistic scaffolding in your own work more clearly and you’ll be more aware of choices you’re making subconsciously. You’ll recognize thematic hypocrisy or worldbuilding inconsistencies and have the language to name them.

And you’ll also have the tools to explore your less clear-cut, more emotional reactions to art. And this is the most important but “hardest” part of this: sitting with vague feelings and unformed thoughts trying to suss out what’s at the heart of them and why, using your hard-won critical “training” and your contextual knowledge.

I like to frame them as questions:

Why did the end of [book] feel disjointed? Why didn’t I connect with the main character in [book]? What really resonated with me about the plot of [book]? Why does [character] appeal to me more than [other character]? Why does [book]’s use of [theme] make me uncomfortable?

Sometimes it comes down to just preference or subjective taste, and that’s fine and good to know. But more often than not, you’re reacting to something concrete that can be identified:

The ending of HOUSE OF SALT AND SORROWS feels disjointed because it comes out of nowhere and has nothing to do with our heroine’s efforts in the larger story. I didn’t connect with the main character in HEARTLESS because within the context of the worldbuilding, her choices didn’t make sense. What really resonated with me about the plot of UPROOTED is its thematic coherency. The Darkling appeals to me more than Mal because the villain romance power fantasy aspect of the series is better fleshed out and ultimately more rewarding to read than the love story of two flawed teenagers. ACOWAR’s use of trauma and recovery makes me uncomfortable because it ceases to be a sincere element of anyone’s arc or characterization and becomes yet another tool to make Rhys look like the best and coolest and wokest fae boyfriend.

Pulled from an old Captain Awkward article, this is something I have in a sticky note on my desktop as sort of a criticism guide:

One of the things we try to do is to push past “I liked it”/”I didn’t like it” as reactions to work. What is it? What is it trying to be? Is it good at being that thing? Was that a good thing to try to be in the first place? Did the artist have a specific agenda? How did it play with audiences at the time? Does it play the same way now? What stereotypes does it reinforce/undermine?

Even if it’s only for your own personal growth rather than intended for an audience, I recommend putting burgeoning critical thoughts or questions you’re trying to ��work through” down in writing somewhere: goodreads reviews! tweets! blog posts! spamming your group chat! Even just a private word document. The synthesis of thoughts into written content forces you to identify and choose a specific articulation of your idea(s). If it’s in a pubic or semipublic forum, you’ll also be able to see which of your ideas resonate with other people, and that can (isn’t always, but CAN) be useful information as far as having an external barometer for when you’re onto something.

And then..... you do that a bunch of times in different ways for many years, with a lot of different books and movies and games and whatever else. Like any other skill, you will get better the more you do it. (Again: I have been doing this for ten years now, and it still took me three months to write that video script. Forming nuanced, informed opinions and then articulating them coherently is hard.)

As kind of a footnote tip, seek out peers who have the same goals and feelings, and try to connect with them! Lots of my current internet friends found me back when I was posting on my personal blog about problems i had with THE SELECTION or RED QUEEN and we bonded over having similar opinions and being in similar places in our writing/ reading/ careers. These people now beta read my scripts and posts and help me brainstorm or refine ideas. I strongly believe that creatives (and critics) do their best work and grow the most within a network of support and feedback.

But also, in regards to creative writing in particular, i want to be clear that having fun is the most important thing. I absolutely think creators need analytical skills to improve their craft, but without the enjoyment of doing the thing at the core of it, there is no craft at all. If you have to choose between the "smart” thing and the fun thing, choose the fun thing. Tbh, if you’re worried your work is bland, analysis probably isn’t the solution-- figuring out how to have more fun is the solution. And letting yourself lean into the stuff that’s wild and awesome and so incredibly you that it sets you on fire to write is a skill of its own :)

Personality wise, I'm quite a shy person, I get anxious quite easily as well and I don't do too well around louder groups and environments. I'm often the quiet one that notices things that others don't and I also think things through a lot before I do or say anything. I also just want to make sure the people around me are okay and happy and I've gotten quite good at reading people, especially more stoic people too. I also really love hugs, physical affection and I'm really giggly! As well as that, I'm very creative and I like to explore a lot of creative mediums.

Appearance wise I'm very short (4ft11!) I have wavy ginger hair, I have quite rounded features, big round gold glasses and I tend to wear quite minimal makeup. I also really love to wear cosy jumpers and skirts. I also wear a lot of dark green, it's my favourite colour to wear!

Additionally, I adore tea and coffee and I often carry a notebook with me because I like to write and doodle whenever and wherever. I'm terribly sorry if I waffled on a bit 😬 I adore you Holly and thank you for bringing something lovely and bright to the end of the year 💖💖 - teawiththeweasleys

Alright, so I can definitely see you with Neville. Possibly Oliver Wood, but definitely Neville. He would ADORE when you get shy, especially if your cheeks got all pink and you started to hide a little. His heart would be melting.

He, too, is quiet, but he would be so interested in knowing what your thinking. In all honesty I feel like if you two were hanging out with the golden trio/the twins/ginny/etc. he wouldn’t really be following the main conversation as he would be watching you the entire time trying to figure out what you’re thinking.

He loves your caring nature and how willing you are to comfort/care for any of your friends, even random students around the castle if you had stumbled upon them in a bad mood. He’d be quick to remind you to take care of yourself though. He knows how caring for others in like second nature to you, but he also sees how it can drain you at times. He’d be so in tune with you and your emotions that the second you start feeling even a little bit down/drained, he’d tell you to relax and do something for yourself - usually in the form of your art (whatever medium you prefer to use that day).

On top of that, he would go ABOVE AND BEYOND to cuddle you and share little touches here and there. He would pepper kisses all over your face (his favourite place being your nose! he would so be the guy to just place a cute lil kiss to your nose making you scrunch it up and giggle) until you’re giggling nonstop and can’t wipe the smile from your lips. & cuddles? He lives for them. He would always, ALWAYS find a way to have his arms wrapped around your waist or his head on your shoulder/on top of your head. His favourite way to hold you, whether you guys are cuddling or standing around talking to friends, is him standing behind you so he can wrap his arms around you and rest his head on your shoulder, occasionally burying his face into your neck. Especially since you’re so tiny compared to him, he’d just love being able to wrap you right up tight in his arms.

He would love your style by the way too! It’s never in a sexual way, but he’s just so amazed at how beautiful and sweet you look, both in your physical features and in how you dress. He wouldn’t quite understand how he was chosen to date an angel. Also, with green being you’re favourite colour to wear? He would melt. Every time you wore green, whether it be in a sweater, pants, a skirt, t-shirt, even your shoes?? he would smile to himself and call you his little plant (or his own little x - whatever his favourite plant is/what he sees you as and it’s be the cutest thing)

You two would just be really freaking cute together, and he would love you to the ends of the earth and then some.

ELLIE: Ellie’s best friends are Tonks, Badeea, and Bill! She’s also pretty close with the other Hufflepuff girls and Charlie.

8. Is there anyone at Hogwarts that they can’t stand?

ADELIA: Adelia can’t stand Cillian Lynch and Ernest Ellison (the brothers of Tadhg and Teddy) who are unfortunately in her house.

ELLIE: Merula definitely annoys Ellie with her bullying and ‘most powerful witch at hogwarts’ gloating. I like to think they eventually becomes friends though. There’s also Emily Tyler who is just horrible!

23. What is their opinion of muggles?

ADELIA: Even though Adelia grew up under her father’s strict Pureblood ideals, she is a very open minded person and thinks some of the things Muggles come up with are quite ingenious! She’s not particularly interested in them but does not think they’re lesser than wizards either.

ELLIE: Ellie thinks Muggles are very creative and likes going to their art museums. She even owns a few Muggle items which she inherited from her mother (who was Muggleborn), like a record player and some books.

42. What do they do during the summer?

ADELIA: In the summer Adelia returns to her family’s home in London. She loves the city and is even able to spend time with a few of her friends from school who also live there! Adelia and her sister Cecily always spend around a month in France with their grandparents who live on the western coast.

ELLIE: Ellie spends each summer at her Aunt Orla’s cottage in County Galway, Ireland. Her aunt works during the week so Ellie entertains herself by painting, reading, and swimming in the nearby lake.
