Pride Month list part 2: book edition

I read a lot (and I mean a lot) of queer books, especially during my YA phase ages 15-17, but here are a few that have particularly stood out to me, and why you should read them:

Maurice by E.M. Forster (published posthumously in 1971): everything you'd want from an early 20th century romance, except it's gay, and arguably the best piece of 20th century queer literature

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (2019): absolutely heartwrenching, will have you gasping for air in between sobs, and it's written by a poet so you KNOW the prose is amazing

Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart (2022): set in 1990s Glasgow, will absolutely rip your heart out and tear it to shreds

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo (2021): 1950s lesbian coming of age during the red scare, need I say more?

Don't Cry for Me by Daniel Black (2022): written in the form of letters, from a Black father to his gay son

Swimming in the Dark by Tomasz Jedrowski (2020): for some reason, no one seems to have read this, and they absolutely should have. will, once again, leave you in sobs (I am beginning to suspect I might cry easily)

My Government Means to Kill Me by Rasheed Newson (2022): another underhyped one, about race and sexuality during the AIDS crisis

Un Garçon d'Italie by Philippe Besson (2003): one of the narrators is literally a rotting corpse, that should be intriguing enough

A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood (1964), Confusion by Stefan Zweig (1927), Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown (1973) and Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin (1956) because, if you're like me, you're desparate to find queer literature from before the 1990s

Angels in America by Tony Kushner (1993), much quicker to read than to watch though, unfortunately, you do not have Andrew Garfield as Prior Walter in the written version

Ace of Spades by Faridah Abiké-Iyimidé (2021) starts with a quote from Get Out and that tells you everything you need to know

Ziggy, Stardust and Me by James Brandon (2019) is surprisingly rich for YA, exploring homosexuality in the 1970s, conversion therapy and Native American identity

Crush by Richard Siken (2005) if you're more into poetry, particularly the kind that will bring you physical and emotional pain

Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel (1986) because you can't not read Alison Bechdel

The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun (2021), The Feeling of Falling in Love by Mason Deaver (2022), and She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen (2021) are the perfect romcoms if you want to switch your brain off for a few hours (or emotionally recover from half of the other books on this list)

Thanks for joining me on this ride through 2022! When I started my reading spree in autumn 2021 I did not expect to find so much joy (and sometimes frustation) to motivate me to write hundreds of words about books every month. I read and write what I want and because I want to, but it's nice to know that sometimes there’s actually someone interested in what I have to say. So thank you for even the small interactions. :)

I had to edit this overview like five times because whenever I thought I was done I found another book I missed. So if I counted correctly I have read a total of 93 books (written and audio, not including manga, comics and non-fiction). That is ... a damn lot! Like 6 years combined compared to before. I also reread two of those books and while editing my novel I read it two whole times. That counts, right? (That’s why there’s 94 covers up there. Because i snuck it inbetween. Because I can. uAu) Only 14 of all these books I would categorise as non-queer. Funnily enough, 6 of those I didn’t like very much. Of the remaining 75 queer books I only found 1 book really bad and I’m picky about 2 more. Huh.

On to the award ceremony! (But don’t expect laudations. I wouldn’t shut up.)

(from: The Song that moves the Sun, Darius the Great (probably the 2nd) and the third time I already blocked from my mind (Here the Whole Time???)) That sentence came up fucking three times! Seriously. WHY?! I hate it. 8D

(from: The Darkness Outside Us) I laughed so hard at this sentence. Finally someone who gets it! All stupid YA heroines should listen to this.

Trivia:

○ The obvious starting point for this project was Jusin Beiber's "Beauty and a Beat", which Tony and Layne had performed as part of VoicePlay's "Wow! Vol. 1" medley during the 2015 Sing-Off tour, but one song does not a full plot make. The guys delved into his extended catalogue to find songs that fit certain story beats and would blend well with the animated movie's score.

○ This was an incredibly ambtious undertaking. According to the PattyCake guys, preparations took five months, and filming spanned "six long days" (and nights, clearly).

○ All that hard work paid off, though, since they were able to time their YouTube release for the same day that the Emma Watson movie hit theaters.

○ VoicePlay recorded a Beauty and the Beast medley for "Once Upon an Ever After" (2012), their first album with Tony as a member of the group. Excerpts from that arrangement later appeared in their music videos "Be Our Guest", "Aca Top 10 – Disney Sidekicks", and "Aca Top 10 – Disney Villains". They also included "Belle" in their "Aca Top 10 – Broadway" countdown.

○ "Love Yourself" was the first song in VoicePlay's PartWork series, which they started as preparation for Tony leaving the group.

○ Layne occasionally used "Baby" as his interruption at the end of VoicePlay's "Road Trip" medley / comedy sketch.

○ On top of their usual studio work, this production required multiple location shoots:

The outdoor village scenes were filmed at the Casa Feliz museum.

Beast's castle interior was the Ballroom at Church Street, which closed in 2019, and was demolished 2023.

The tavern was an actual bar, the Tap Room at Dubsdread.

○ Between the main cast and dozens of background folks, they needed so many costumes that Tony enlisted his sister Anita to help wrangle them all.

○ There are several of Tony's fellow "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni among the main cast:

Michael (Gaston) played Dracula and Frankenstein's monster.

Joey (LaFou) played Wolfman and Dracula.

Brad (Prince Adam) was a dancer in the final "Mashup" iteration of the show.

○ There are also many friends and family among background cast and crew, including several cast members from previous Unexpected Musicals. Olivia Adkins and Leah Lowman are among the village crowd as Snow White and Cinderella. Rachel Copeland and Matthew Buckner are in the tavern crowd, but not as their previous characters. Many of the other villagers were clubgoers in "Hocus Heathens".

Aiden was an only child until he was four years old, when his little sister was born.

He absolutely adored his sister and she quickly became his favorite person. Though she couldn't understand what anyone was saying, Aiden insisted that he read Rose a bedtime story every night.

When Aiden was six and Rose two, Aiden's father got let go from his job and refused to get another. Instead, he sat on the recliner with a cigarette in his mouth and a beer in hand while he watched TV.

Aiden helped out as best as he could at six years old, offering to take care of Rose and make them dinners - it usually consisted of just cereal with milk everywhere.

Things with his parents got tense and the yelling at each other every night started.

The yelling turned into physical fighting though, and the first time Aiden saw his father strike his mother was the first of many times that Aiden would try to protect his mother. Being six at the time, he couldn't do much other than try to get in the way, throw something at his father or try to push him away.

For six years after that, Aiden grew to resent his mother for allowing his father to beat her around the way she did. Aiden was twelve when he was struck by his father for the first time. He was happy to take the hits as long as it meant that Rose would be safe. But he did fight back and since his dad was drunk most of the time, it wasn't rare that Aiden would come out on top between the two of them.

This continued on until Aiden was eighteen. His father still wasn't contributing anything but pain to the household, so Aiden got a job and worked as hard as he could so he could take care of the bills and everything else. On his way home from work, Aiden was met by a slew of police officers and firefighters on his lawn and behind them, his house burned to the ground.

Aiden tried running into the house but was held back by the firefighters, he kept fighting them to get inside until three stretchers rolled out of the house in body bags. Falling weak against the firefighter, Aiden broke down. He didn't care that his dad was dead, but his mom and more importantly, Rose.

He later found out that his dad, in a drunken rage killed his sister and mom before settling the house aflame.

Aiden didn't cope well with his moms or sisters death, and to get his anger out he would pick random fights in bars and participate in underground fighting rings.

Once Aiden started making some money from the fighting rings, he kept doing that until he was twenty-six years old. Unknown to him at the time, a known supernatural group of vampires (unknown to Aiden at this point) had been watching him fighting for the last year or so, deciding they wanted to recruit him to be a part of their group.

After a fight, he and his friends were celebrating at a bar before they decided to go somewhere else for the night. He and his friends were ambushed by the group of vampires, Aiden took some pretty serious hits but was still alive, and that was more than he could say for his friends who were all dead.

The leader of the group then approached Aiden, forcing bloodied wrist to his mouth then killing him.

What felt like hours later, Aiden woke up in a warehouse. His head was hurting and his throat was raspy as he looked around, one of the vampires then shoved a bleeding woman into Aiden's arms and told him to feed. Aiden was disgusted by it, but couldn't stop himself as he did just that, finishing his transition.

From that point on, he was trained on how to be a better vampire than he was but they made sure not to train him to his full potential for fear that he would turn against them and kill them. Aiden was informed that they were 'Vampires for hire' and when a client wanted someone dead, they would hire the vampires to do it.

He refused at first, because why the hell would he do that? He learned that day why you didn't refuse when an order was given.

He despised working for the group and for the first few years, Aiden would train on his own before he was confident enough in his abilities.

As Aiden was leaving the warehouse, set to leave them for good he was caught by a handful of the vampires he's worked with. It was against the rules to leave, and punishable by death - they said. Aiden thought not, and a fight broke out between all of them. It was a nasty fight, but Aiden came out on top and left.

The leader of the group was still alive, and Aiden knew he'd hunt him down to finish the job. So, without a single trace, he left the state and just when he stayed too long, or caught wind that the leader was catching up to him, he'd leave again.

He learned how to enjoy the nicer things about being a vampire, the immortality, the strength, the speed sometimes even the compulsion. And with the compulsion came money.

A few years later, Aiden met Natalia. She was a spitfire and brave and everything Aiden liked in a person. The two went on a few dates for awhile before they got serious. On the year mark of them being together, Aiden confessed to Natalia about what he was, in doing so, opening her up to the supernatural world. He explained where he came from, the things he's done and even that he was on the run from the eldest vampire. He explained to her that there might be a day where he needs to up and leave, and he wanted her to come with him. She told him she'd go anywhere with him.

And she did. When Aiden got word that the leader was closing in, he'd erase his entire existence from anyone he's met aside from Natalia and run again. Things were going good for four years after that.

Until he came home one night, flowers and the nine yards in hands to celebrate their fifth year anniversary. Instead of being met with her contagious laughter, he was met with the horrific scene of her bloodied body, limbs and all strewn about.

Aiden was done, sick and tired of losing people and sick and tired of running. He couldn't see anything but rage as he found the leader, and when he did, the two fought before Aiden finally drove a stake home through his chest and just to make sure he was really dead, Aiden ripped his head off and tossed his head, and body in the river.

For years and years after that, Aiden continued to travel the world. He met a good handful of people along the way, hooked up with a majority of people but never had it in him to start anything more than that.

Deciding to leave again, Aiden left to Mystic Falls.

Finding an underground club specifically for the supernatural, Aiden would spend his nights there with a lot of people, hanging out, drinking the night away and having an all out good time. There, he met Josie Saltzman.

She seemed to be an intriguing person, and Aiden and Josie soon became friends, playful banter being tossed around every now and then. As time progressed, they went from friends, to friends with benefits. The two seemed to be content where they were with each other, both not wanting to take that extra step to be something more. Josie wasn't ready and neither was Aiden.

That changed a few years later when they became official. It was a scary, nerve wracking thing but Aiden was ready for that step with her, and excited to explore that with her.

He was introduced to Parker when he was four years old and Aiden knew that was a big step. He promised Josie that he would keep her and Parker safe as long as there was air in his lungs.

Deep down, Aiden knew he wasn't biologically Parker's father and that was okay. He never intended to replace his father, but Aiden did raise him as his own son and counts Parker as his son.

A few years later, Josie was attacked and Aiden found her. It was Natalia all over again and he couldn't lose her, couldn't let her die and leave Parker an orphan. Aiden then fed her his blood, turning Josie into a heretic. For the last thirty years, Aiden has been living with Josie here in town.

“Charmed,” “Dynasty,” “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In the Dark” have been canceled at The CW, Variety has learned.

Both “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In the Dark” have already completed filming on their upcoming seasons and will conclude after those episodes have aired.

“Roswell, New Mexico” will premiere its fourth season June 6, which following Thursday’s cancellation news that it will be its last. Another reboot of a classic teen show, the drama stars Jeanine Mason, Nathan Dean, Michael Vlamis, Lily Cowles, Tyler Blackburn, Heather Hemmens, Michael Trevino and Amber Midthunder.

The show hails from Warner Bros. TV and CBS Television studios. Christopher Hollier, Julie Plec, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, Lawrence Bender and Kevin Kelly Brown executive produce.
