Miss Domme
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: sub!jay x dom fem!reader
genre: smut (+ fluff)
word count: 2.9k
warnings: MINORS DNI, unprotected s3x (wrap it before you tap it irl daahhlliingggs), dom reader, submissive husband jay, usage of toys (ribbons and c0ck rings), mild degradation (reader teases jay a lot and calls jay a filthy s*ut, but is mostly a soft dom throughout. definitely heavy on the petnames!), sub top x dom bottom dynamic
synopsis: you’re a famous international beauty pageant winner. you’re incredibly successful and beautiful. you’re kind, charitable, and giving. you’re the epitome of beauty and brains. a real-life princess. you also happen to be the wife of a very wealthy, prominent, powerful gentleman - jay! some people think he has lost his mind and become possessed by you because of how deeply in love he is with you. I mean, do we blame him? you’re literally so gorgeous, intelligent, and gracious.
and of course………………….you two share an extremely filthy secret together. you may be miss *[y/c] to the rest of the world. but behind closed doors? you’re Miss Domme…..
*[y/c] = your country
A/N: you know….i’ve been binge watching a LOT of beauty pageants lately. i was in the middle of watching the swimsuit segment of a miss universe show. and suddenly this idea randomly STRUCK me ……..… literally out of NOWHERE 😳……………………………………………
A/N #2: my debut fic alas! miss-conjayniality hot debut let’s goooo! 🤪🥰 this took me sooooo long to complete 😮‍💨 good gawd….I intended for this to be shorter but i kept adding more and more ideas to it, briefly encountered writer’s block in the midst of it, AND kinda rewrote some of it too…..nonetheless, it’s finally out! 🤌🏼
you confidently strut into your shared bedroom, igniting the scene with your sexy, flirty walk. the same charming walk that made you win over the nation. you’re donning a silk blush pink bikini with a sarong, beige chinese laundry teaser2 tippy top platform heels, black acrylic nails, curled hair, dewy makeup with pink lip gloss, a mouawad diamond crown, and a sash that says Miss Domme on it. yup, you read that right - miss domme…….
jay, sitting on the bed, takes the time to just stop and stare. to let the moment sink in. to appreciate your beauty. your regal and poised nature, your ethereal presence, and the way you light up the room the moment you enter it. he has so much love inside for his mesmerizing wife. every day, he is immensely grateful for you.
he then notices the two black ribbons and vibrating ring in your hands and already knows what’s gonna happen next. he unbuttons his dress shirt and you’re welcomed by the sight of his stunning, tanned, godlike top half. he leans back against the plush pillows of his smooth, luscious black silk bedsheets, and spreads his arms out, demonstrating his eagerness to get tied up already.
and don’t even lie….it’s tempting to just cut to the chase and devour him right away just at the sight of his bare chest and his needy temperament. but you know it’s best to maintain your decorum and start out with your foreplay of long-winded seduction before the big attack. you give him a content smile and tie the ribbons around his arms against the metal headboard of your shared bed.
you do a quick check-in with him and ensure he’s still feeling comfortable before proceeding. no matter what, it is always of utmost propriety and proper decorum to you that consent is granted.
“are you feeling okay pumpkin?” you ask as you softly look him in the eyes and scratch his head. “do you still wanna do this?”
“yes miss domme. i am all yours as always.”
“good. let me know if at any moment you aren’t feeling okay and I’ll stop. got it angel?”
“of course. I love you so much, miss domme. I always trust you no matter what. you are my everything.”
you flash a relaxed, content grin and a peck a playful kiss on his forehead. he’s so effortlessly adorable sometimes. it drives you crazy. you can’t tell if you wanna pinch his cheeks or devour his soul with a flurry of butterfly kisses all over his body. we’ll wait and see!
you are jay’s trophy wife - a beauty queen who is the living personification of elegance, intelligence and glamour. you’re a real life princess. someone passionate about community service, and advocating for social justice causes close to your heart. miss [y/c] indeed - a proud representative of your home country. someone who aims to create change in the community and spread awareness to the issues that matter to you and your country the most.
you have a heart of gold and it’s evident in the way you treat both yourself and others with respect. some even find you cold and intimidating because of how beautiful you are, how you conduct yourself, and how much you’ve accomplished in your life. but the moment you smile at them and converse with them, their nerves are eased.
people either love you or hate you. there is no between. you’re either seen as the epitome of beauty and brains, or you’re seen as a superficial gold digger who leveraged her sex appeal and beauty queen status to ensnare a wealthy, dignified man like jay. others see beyond that and know the value you bring to the community and acknowledge that the inner beauty of your soul shines just as much as the outer beauty of your charming smile.
either way, jay is extremely head over heels in love with you. he sees you as a living goddess. he views you as a poised lady with the magnetism of aphrodite and the wisdom of athena. some people swear he’s lost his mind ever since he met you because of how deeply he is in love with you. but he doesn’t care because you’re his precious, beautiful wife whom he’d move the earth and sky for. he’s highly protective of you. he’s a VERY passionate lover. you’ve seduced him into a trance. you are his spoiled princess whom he adores with all his heart. he will lavish you with grand gestures as a tribute to his seismic adoration for you. he worships the ground you walk on.
that being said, you two share an extremely filthy secret together that contributes to the some of the aforementioned traits of your marriage. while it certainly isn’t the only reason why he’s so whipped for you, it sure is a major weakness of his….
and what was that dirty secret again? 🤨 oh right - miss domme. the moment he sees you donning your skimpy little swimsuits, chinese laundry tippy top platform heels, your rhinestone crown and your signature miss domme sash, he crumbles. he’s at your mercy. whenever he’s on a business trip where he can’t bring you, he packs one of your bikinis and uses it to get off in order to blow off some steam at the end of his long days filled with busy projects and mind-numbing meetings. he then films himself doing so and sends it to you. but HMMM…that’s a story for another day daahhllinggsss…..
whenever you seduce him with your velvety, graceful words, he is done for. you may be Miss [Y/C] to the rest of the world. but behind closed doors? you’re Miss Domme…..
“so cute seeing such a powerful, dignified gentleman like you turn into someone so needy for my touch,” you coo to a tied up jay. “beneath that cold, chic, manly dilf exterior of yours is a filthy slut who thrives off of getting pleasured to oblivion by his pretty little princess. isn’t that right, buttercup?”
“hnngh- ….. y-yes miss domme. you’re right,” he softly winced.
his top half is bare, yet his suit trousers still remain on. you rub your crotch on his clothed bulge, and then lean into his shoulders, start caressing his bare skin, and start moaning into his ear as a way to incite more arousal. you then face him and begin making out with him, leaving behind the taste of your buttery lipgloss that he LOVES.
you then move down his neck, and to his chest because you want to leave behind even more of your beloved shimmery, buttery gloss until it’s fully wiped away. the sight of his tanned, toned body marked by your lip gloss is indeed a priceless work of art worth ogling at forever……….
jay winces at the sensations. “m…m-miss domme? when can I touch you?”
“soon, i promise,” you reassured.
you continue showering jay with kisses all over his body for another minute. then, you pull down his pants and are welcomed with the sight of his freed, erect shaft sprung up by your provocations….
before beginning, you adjust your crown. you start off by licking your way up to the tip. jay releases a hiss because despite it being such a minuscule action, he will take absolutely anything from you because of how needy he is right now.
now….here comes the fun part. first, you grab the vibrating cock ring and insert the ring around his throbbing member. with the remote in your hands, you turn it on at the lowest setting.
jay gasps at the sensation of the sudden change. whiny moans & cries IMMEDIATELY leave his mouth the moment you press that button.
the sight is endearing. it takes you every ounce of willpower to not stop, stare and drool at the sight in front of you because truthfully? you’d cum just at the sight of that. but we still have so much more left to do……
next, you slowly engulf his cock into your mouth. jay DESPERATELY wants to thrust his hips down your throat so he can feel even more of your heavenly mouth alongside the vibrating ring. but he’d rather not risk it because he wants to be a good boy to his beloved miss domme and not get punished. 🥺
jay’s breathing becomes more frantic, chest heaving really fast.
“AH-……hnnnng. ugh F-FUCK …..miss domme please spare me,” jay begs with tears sliding down his face. you briefly take his girth out of your mouth and strike a smirk at him, your hands on his cock temporarily replacing your mouth as you respond to him.
not yet cutie. be a good boy and take whatever i give you. understood?” you assert before heading (no pun intended) back to engulfing his length.
“yes m…mi- AH…..m….miss domme,” he struggles to let out through choked sobs.
what a sight to behold. a sweaty, whiny, needy jay shuddering at the verge of tears because of how deadly you are….how cute….
you allow all the drool from your mouth to salivate itself onto his girth to make it even more wet, and start bobbing your head deeper - still taking it slowly, but gradually picking up the pace. you choose to continue taking it slowly and just……having fun with it. playing around with his kisses, licks, and moans around his shaft that make his brain short-circuit at the sudden vibrations of your voice and sends shivers down his spine. his buzzing cock ring certainly adds more fuel to the fire….
“AH- miss domme…p-please…fuck…I don’t think I can take it any longer.” he pleads. his winces and grunts continue to get louder and louder.
you continue moaning around his length and pleasuring him with your tongue. it seems like his orgasm was around the corner. therefore, you slyly take your mouth off his cock and turn off the toy. he lets out a loud wince at the orgasm denial because he was so close.
“don’t cum yet my love,” you chuckle, “we aren’t finished yet.”
“when will i finally be able to?” he pouts.
“I haven’t even untied you yet cupcake. don’t worry. we’re getting there.”
as you untie the restraints from the headboard, jay immediately gets up, wraps his arms around you, and starts kissing you.
“Mmm…..love…you….miss…..domme…” he says in between each kiss.
his cute, mushy kisses are hard to resist. after all, he is a very affectionate sweetheart. but you still pull away because you had other intentions in mind. “aw buttercup, I love you too. but let’s make out later because right now, i am eager to get you ruined like a slut.”
you lightly push him back against the pillows. you start strip your swimsuit off, piece by piece. starting with the untying of your sarong, then your bikini top, and of course, sliding away your soaked thong. because your thong was so tiny and skimpy, your wetness is prominent from all the provocations you’ve made tonight.
you look him in the eyes as you caress your miss domme sash to draw special attention to it. then, you swiftly slide it off and carefully place it on the nightstand beside your shared bed, alongside your crown. the shoes stay on though….cuz you LOVE the way those sexy beige platform stilettos elongate your body AND complement the warm, golden complexion of your naked body.
despite his eagerness for the slow and painful teasing to stop, he drools at how you striptease your way into your raw, wet, and naked glory. his heart skips several beats and his breath hitches a little. his erection stiffens as each part of you gets revealed one by one. his desires ignite him into a trance.
once you’re complete with the unveiling, you grab his dick and position it so that it’s in front of your stomach. your arms make your way around his shoulders and you’re leaned against him.
“alright loverboy. show me how desperate you are to fuck my soaking pussy. you’ve been such a good little whore for your beloved miss domme,” you chuckle. “it must’ve been hard work to try and hold back all your lustful impulses. I consider that a significant feat, considering how irresistible i am. you did a great job at demonstrating restraint. you’re now free to let go of those stipulations and let loose.”
jay is speechless and bewildered by your words. he expected you to ride him because he was ready to fully surrender and whore himself out to you. only to realize that you want him to prove to you how desperate and needy he is to get his dick wet to you. to prove to you how much he craves the raw feeling of your soaked cunt.
“ah, m-miss domme. i-….i don’t know if i can. you always feel so good and it makes me so weak and-,” he nervously utters.
“it’s okay jay. you got this. i have full faith in you. i can help you start,” you respond with encouragement.
before inserting it in, you first slide your folds back and forth on his shaft. a couple moans exit your mouth, and it isn’t helping jay’s antsy feelings one bit.
“m-miss domme. please….i’m so needy that it hurts. i need it so much. i-”
“don’t worry, we’re getting there.”
you intertwine your hands with his and give him a reassuring kiss, and continue holding his hands throughout.
once it’s been slid inside you, he doesn’t hold back one bit. you enjoy staring him down - seeing his frantic, fucked out expressions as he wets his painfully stiff cock, desperately jerks himself off, and whores himself away to the sensation of your tight heat.
“fuck, jay. you’re doing so well. so…s-….so well for miss domme. keep going babe…you got this,” you praise.
for a while, he’s able to plunge himself erratically because it helped him release his pent up desperation. but eventually, he tires himself out, yet still wants more.
“miss domme….miss domme….m-…miss domme,” he keeps sputtering over and over again like a broken record.
that’s when you finally start riding and bouncing on his dick, skin slapping noises inundating the room. his wails get even louder with each undulation of yours. jay is writhing for you.
it really boosts your ego to see such a strong, sexy, powerful man like jay get reduced to a pretty little slut who can’t live without your touch. he loves to let you use him for your own personal pleasure and milk every drop out of him until there’s none left. he finds it so hot how much power you possess over him. it gets him off just as much as it gets you off.
gradually, the excessive ramming led you close to your climax.
“jay,” you grunted, “m’ close. just let it all out love.”
jay’s eyes were left wide open at the sight of you convulsing and the sensations of your heat throbbing. the sound of your moans and grunts are pure music to his ears. he loves that he makes you feel good.
your release led to his own orgasm shortly thereafter. you kept bouncing through his climax to keep milking his seed and overstimulate him a little.
“AHH-…M- ….. I-…SSSS D-…..DOMME,” jay screams out. each undulation of yours intensifies the spasming sensations, gradually leading to a second peak for both of you.
jay slides out of you and both of you lay on the bed, hurried breathing being the only sound to take over the room.
“how are you feeling pumpkin?” you worriedly ask as you face his direction, “are you feeling any pain?”
“nope. you made me feel so good tonight miss domme. just a little soreness but it’ll go away. what about me? did i make you feel good?”
“of course jay!” you exclaim as you wrap one arm around him, “there isn’t a single moment when you don’t make me feel good.”
jay blushes at that remark and leans in for a hug, “i love you miss domme. i love you with all my heart. every day, i am so grateful and blessed to be married to a woman like you. i can’t stress this enough. you are my everything.”
“awe jay, you’re so cute when you get all mushy after getting all fucked out,” you giggle, “you’re the sweetest husband ever and every day I am grateful to be married to a man like you. you’re a kind, selfless, protective gentleman who has done so much for me. now let’s get cleaned up shall we?”
you grabbed the two water bottles and chocolate chip granola bars on the nightstand.
“here, have some water and have a granola bar or two. need to ensure we both stay hydrated and that none of us get dizzy.”
you two take a moment to sip some water and briefly snack. you two were gonna massage each other but decided to reserve that for the next morning when both of you are more well-rested. you head to the edge of the bed and slip off your tippy tops to head to the bathroom with him to wipe each other with warm towels, pee, remove your makeup, and then head off into a cozy, cuddly, good night’s sleep! 🥰

Pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x OFC (Reader)Word Count: 1.8k
Warnings: Swearing
Written for @sailor-aviator writing challenge. Scrooge was my prompt.
Masterlist
Have a cup of cheer!
You don't hate Christmas exactly, more a high dislike layered over forced tolerance. No appreciation for the holiday. When you think of Christmas, your memory isn't filled with cinnamon scented Hallmark moments like baking cookies or decorating fresh pine trees.
Christmas was the ultimate swap holiday between your not amicably divorced parents. An only child shuffled from coast to coast, neither parent really wanting to invest wholesale for an occasional holiday. Half assed fake trees and takeout Chinese for Christmas dinner was more the norm than big family feasts. Eventually your parents gave up the motions of holiday celebrations and would bring you on a vacation they wanted to go on as a way to supposedly celebrate. You went skiing, a lot.
Which is how you find yourself waiting in line at your favorite coffee shop, grinding your teeth as everyone in front of you orders the most elaborate Christmas flavored mega-multi- gingerbread-peppermint-mocha-latte with almond milk and real whipped cream and all you want is an iced coffee, black. You live in San Diego for Christ's sake, it's 78 degrees outside.
You snort to yourself, you like your coffee black, like your soul. You feel like black cloud on a sunny day, a Scrooge at a Christmas pageant,a turd in the punch bowl as you wait in this excruciatingly slow line as Mariah Carey warbles in the background and you're surrounded by tinsel and fake pine garland.
You have five days left till Christmas, five days till your life goes back to normal and there is no more Santa, no more cinnamon scented gag-inducing pine cones hanging out in the entry of your local grocery store, and blissfully, no more Christmas music.
"Five more days," you breathe in and out, a calming mantra in this melee of forced cheer and commercialism.
"Five more days," breathe in, breathe out.
Finally, you're next in line, so close to getting your caffeine fix and getting out of here.
Finally, you order and wave off the barista's efforts for you to try a holiday themed drink and muffin and scone and bagel bites. Is everything peppermint flavored?
"I'm good, just a large black iced coffee. Thank you," you say through a forced smile. She shrugs and gets your order ready. You tip well and turn to quickly exit.
A blond man in a Navy, you think, uniform is behind you and instantly reads your resting bitch face. He smiles a dazzling grin, so beautiful that if you weren't trying to remember breathing exercises from yoga to keep from losing your shit, it might make you a little weak in the knees at any other time of year. And then he opens his mouth, a Southern lilt wrapped around his words,
"Cheer up, Doll. Christmas is almost here. Have you been a good girl this year for Santa to bring you a nice present?"
This is it, this is the moment you do something that will either get you arrested and on the news or a become a regrettable viral video on the Internet with the title, "ChriSTtmAs FreeK-OUT SouNd on!"
You really don't find it in yourself to care about the results of what's about to happen, this poor unsuspecting schmuck is about to have all your shiny, gift wrapped emotional baggage labeled "Christmas!" unloaded on him while he's probably waiting to get a mega-multi- gingerbread-peppermint-mocha-latte with almond milk and real whipped cream.
"Don't call me doll, dick. And I really don't give a flying fuck about Santa or whatever shitty pick up line you're trying to use. This whole fucking time of year is bullshit and I don't need you telling me to cheer up. I haven't been happy at Christmas for the last 32 years, doubt it's going to change now. So leave me alone and you can enjoy your Christmas sugar bomb and spread your fake cheer somewhere else!"
The rage flows through you making you tremble as you hold back tears.
The man in front of you has lost the smile and is reaching out his hands in what you realize is a feeble attempt to comfort you. Pure concern blankets his face, making your rage fizzle, like a match thrown in water.
"I'm sorry. I was just trying to get you to smile…" he pauses as he retreats hands and runs one through his hair,
"I'm really sorry I caused you pain. Sorry this isn't a good time of year for you."
His sincerity deflates you entirely and the tears you're holding back flood out and flow down your cheeks.
"It's fine, it's fine," you mumble as you frantically search for the exit. Now you're noticing that the entire coffee shop is silent and watching you. You flee out the door, cringing as you hear the jingle bells on the door ring. You walk just far enough to get out of the view of anyone in the coffee shop.
Apparently, this weird moment in time is when you decide to unpack your shitty childhood. Slumping down against the brick wall behind you, you sit down and take a long sip of your iced coffee, your hands shaking as you wipe away the tears.
"You look like you could use something stronger," a now familiar voice says softly.
Looking up you see your unwitting emotional punching bag holding out his hand,
"I know a place close by if you want to take me up on the offer."
"Why are you being nice to me? I called you a dick in front of 50 people," you say, sniffing to keep the snot at bay.
"Call it the Christmas spirit. You seem like you could use someone to talk to and I do feel like a dick for making you cry in a coffee shop. I'm Jake, by the way."
You ponder his offer for a second,
"This isn't one of those self aggrandizing things you're going to brag about on social media later, is it?"
He laughs, a deep and true laugh.
"Nope, I was trying to talk to you to get your number because I think you're beautiful. Plus, who drinks iced coffee black? You're obviously a complex character or a serial killer. Call me curious."
You laugh a small sniffling laugh and take his hand, and say as he helps you up,
"Well, Jake by the way, I'm Y/n, but you can call me Scrooge, I guess, because I feel like I've ruined Christmas."
"Don't give yourself that much credit. There's still five days to make it better. How about that drink? Scroogey?"
"Sure, let's go. But if you try to make me drink a peppermint martini I will lose it….again."
"I wouldn't dream of it. It's the Hard Deck, just down the block. I don't think that's the type of drink that Penny would be any good at it."
Jake leads the way towards the bar. You've seen it as you live in the area, but didn't really think it was your scene.
As you sit in a cozy booth and talk with Jake, you enjoy the atmosphere, simple and unpretentious and blissfully lacking Christmas music you realize it is exactly the kind of place you like to hang out at. You and Jake talk so long about your lives that you eventually order food. One drink turns into several.
You learn he is a fighter pilot for the Navy and is stationed out of North Island, he grew up in Texas, and he absolutely loves Christmas. He learns that you are in marketing, grew up in Connecticut, and why Christmas sucks for you.
When you finally notice the time you realize you've been talking to Jake for three hours.
"Oh crap, I've got to get going. I've got an early morning," you chuckle to yourself thinking about your sunrise yoga class and how you used some of the techniques trying to stay calm in the coffee shop.
Jake stands up with you and waves you off as you try to pull some cash from your wallet for the tab.
"My treat, call it a Christmas gift,' he says, absolutely pushing his luck. For some reason it comes across as charming and makes you laugh.
"Would it be okay if I got your number? I'd like to see you again, Y/N."
You hold yourself together to not let out a girlish giggle of glee,
"I'd like to see you again too, Jake," you readily agree, trying to sound breezy. You quickly exchange phones and send a text to each other. Jake walks you out of the Hard Deck and gives you a chaste peck on the cheek as he hugs you goodbye.
You're getting ready for bed, a giant smile plastered on your face when your phone dings, a new message popping up.
Jake Seresin: 🎄 Merry Christmas, I'm thankful for the gift of meeting you today. I must have a good boy this year for Santa to bring us together. Owe the old man one.
You: Merry Christmas, Jake. 🎅
"Merry Christmas, y/n," Jake hums into your ear curling himself around your back.
One Year and Five Days Later
"Merry? This early? What time is it?" you croak back.
"5 am, my nieces and nephews are going to wake up shortly. "
"Thought I'd let you see what's in Santa's package," he says, trying not to laugh, as he lightly thrusts at you.
"Jacob Thomas Seresin, you got me, the ultimate Scrooge, to come to Texas for Christmas with you, bake cookies, cut down a tree, sing carols, and I'm even wearing Christmas pajamas with fucking elves on them that match your whole family, but I have to, have to draw the line at Christmas themed dirty talk."
You feel Jake's smile on your temple as you talk.
"I think you enjoy it, maybe even love Christmas a little now," Jake teases.
You roll over,
"I love you and you love Christmas, so therefore by transitive properties I should love Christmas."
He laughs,
"I'm glad this Christmas has been your best one yet."
"You're confident, maybe a little cocky, that this is my best Christmas ever," you tease.
"I mean, the bar was so low that I think I've knocked out of the park."
"You have, Jake. Thank you for doing all this for me, I might even be starting to like Christmas," you hold up your fingers, "A little bit."
Jake grins and kisses you as the door bursts open,
"Uncle Jake! Uncle Jake! Santa came last night," his five year old niece, Sophia, screams, knocking the last vestiges of sleep off your brain with her volume. You and Jake sit up as she bolts out the door to wake up the rest of the house.
Jake is looking at you, his heart warm, and it gets even warmer when he thinks of a small velvet box sitting under the tree with your name on it.

Behold Mongolia's Camel Beauty Contest
Humps and hair. That's the scene in Bulgan Soum, a tiny Mongolian town in the middle of the Gobi Desert about 160 miles north of the Chinese border.
Bactrian camels arrive in all directions on foot, bearing bundled-up riders wedged between their two humps. It's early March. While the sky is cloudless, the wind can pick up quickly. Officially called the Thousand Camel Festival, the crowd that arrives for the kickoff appears to consist of 100 camels.
The two-day festival begins with a camel beauty pageant.
"Mostly young people participate in the Beautiful Couple Contest. But we wanted to represent the older generation of herders," says lifelong herder Enkhbaatar Dashnyam. At 59, he and his wife, Dulamsuren Yunden, 47, have been herding all their lives. They rely on their animals as a form of transportation and sell products from their wool and milk.
The judges are looking for earmarks of tradition; contestants who wear herding decorations and utensils will have a better chance of winning. Both members of this husband and wife duo wear leather boots with upturned tips and fur hats. Enkhbaatar's belt is slung with an ornate knife and a silver bowl.
When visiting a herder, it's customary to be offered milk tea. "Since old times," he says holding a silver bowl, "Mongolians would carry their own cup."
Enkhbaatar and Dulamsuren will showcase two of their most gentle camels, Mashan Huren and Hos Yagaan. Translated, that means "floppy brown one" and "double pink." Their Chewbacca-colored hair, which hangs like a beard, is brushed. Their humps are draped in gold fringe. A harness is kept in place with a nose peg.
Bactrian camels were domesticated thousands of years ago to carry goods and people across Asia. Adapted for desert conditions, the camels can perform Olympic-like feats: carry over 400 pounds on long journeys, withstand 100-degree Fahrenheit summers and -20-degree winters and, when nourished, go without eating and drinking for weeks. Their humps act as fat reserves for energy.
The camels kneel down so Enkhbaatar and Dulamsuren can climb atop. They enter the festival grounds, a dusty square cleared of camels with spectators now packing the perimeter. Music swells over the loudspeaker. After a burst of applause, the pageant begins.
When it's their turn, the couple ride proudly across the square. The beards of their camels billow. Everyone is taking their picture, which matters more to the couple than winning. Enkhbaatar wants future generations — his grandchildren included — to have photographic proof of their lifestyle.
"Since no one lives forever, I wanted to leave our pictures behind for future generations and my descendants," he says, "so they can feel proud. That's what we were thinking when we decided to participate in this contest."
The judges don't announce the winners until the following day. But there's plenty to do at the Thousand Camel Festival until then. Herders sell fermented camel milk, alongside camel toys stitched from felt. Sporting events — like the camel polo tournament and camel race — continue into the afternoon. In 2016, the festival broke a mark recognized by the Guinness World Records for largest camel race. Over 1,100 camels crossed the finish line.
Why this regional craze for the two-humped creature? The origin story is intertwined with Mongolia's transition to democracy.
Under socialism, herding was centrally planned. Herders sold their animal products to the state. With the onset of capitalism in 1990, herders faced new pressures within the free-market economy. For some, their camels were worth more dead than alive.
"Camel herders couldn't get a good amount of money selling products from camel milk and wool," says 35-year-old festival organizer Ariunsanaa Narantuya.
Camel milk and wool wouldn't sell, but camel meat would. Some herders began slaughtering their camels. The festival was created a few years later, in 1997, by the newly formed Camel Protection Association — a local nongovernmental organization — to reverse that trend and protect the desert creature.
Bulgan Soum is now distinguished by its love and stewardship of Bactrian camels.
After the pageant, Dulamsuren tells NPR that she and her husband have 200 camels in their herd. The birthing season is coming. While most newborn camels make it, some don't or are stillborn. When that happens, she says, the mother camel will mourn.
"The mother camel literally weeps with tears in their eyes," Dulamsuren says. "The camel has a big body, but they have a very soft heart."
Dulamsuren has a song for moments like these, one herders have used for generations to soothe camels over heartbreak. The full practice of "camel coaxing," to unite mothers with calves, was captured in the 2003 German film, The Story of the Weeping Camel.
This bond — between herder and camel — is hard to put into words. But you know it when you see it, and the judges definitely noticed. The next day, Dulamsuren and her husband were declared the winners of the 2019 Camel Beauty Pageant.

At this time, the Daughter Kingdom was facing a natural disaster, and the scorpion spirit must absorb the Yin spirit of Princess Anna of the Daughter Kingdom to avoid it. Only by taking one's own body can one escape the catastrophe. At this time, Tang Seng's master and apprentice happened to pass through the country of daughters. At a beauty pageant, Anna fell in love with Tang Seng at first sight. Anna encountered many things while helping Tang Seng get the abortion water, which made Tang Seng and Anna fall in love with each other. Pageant by Autumn Chen
============= Links
Play the game See other reviews of the game See other games by Autumn or follow her @cyberpunklesbian
============= Synopsis
Your name is Qiuyi (Karen?) Zhao, and you’ve just been signed up by your parents for a beauty pageant. You’re not ready, not even close, but you don’t have a choice. But perhaps you can make the best of it. Maybe it’s the one opportunity to create a “hook” for your college application. Maybe you can reinvent yourself, get rid your anxiety and become someone new. Or maybe you can find true love (or some approximation thereof).
============= Other Info
Pageant is a Dendry* game, first published in 2018 and completed in 2020. *Autumn is also an unofficial maintainer of the Dendry format.
Status: Completed Genre: Dating-sim, Slice-of-life, LGBT
CW: / Note: homo/trans-phobia, talks of suicide, passing out from exhaustion, anxiety.
============= Playthrough
First Played: Some time in 2022? Last Played: 27-May-2023 Playtime: around +2h(-ish) - two proper playthroughs Rating: 5 /5 Thoughts: Winning the pageant is not everything, but the journey is worth the anxiety.
============= Review
Pageant follows Qiuyi (Karen) Zhao (mentioned as Karen below), a Chinese teenager living in the US, as she navigates through school and extra-curriculars, relationships and identity, family expectations and community, and the pageant her parents signed up for. Through limited storylets choice, you can carve Karen's priorities and relationships.
Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.
Did I once again read the Post-Mortem before writing this? Yes. Couldn't help myself. Also this is a bit more eclectic, tried hard to put my thoughts in order, didn't workl...
Pageant was created with Dendry, a storylet narrative program, where the player get to experience linear side-stories in fragmented way. Every week, the player can pick up to three options from the storylet lists to start or continue a path. As the list is often longer than three options, the player is forced to make choices and prioritise a certain path (a recurring gameplay type in Autumn's games). This makes for great and interesting replayability!
The story start with Karen being summoned by her parents, revealing that they signed her up for a pageant, happening in three months. There is no bargaining no quitting (it's good for college apps!). In three months, Karen will be on that podium*. During that prep period, she still needs to balance school (a full AP curriculum), the Science Olympiad, doing an understudy with a college professor (also set up by your parents), having dinner with your family, going to bible study on the weekend, and etc... Doesn't this sound like too much for a high school student? And was it yet mentioned that Karen is a socially awkward mess, who has trouble making relationships, is full of anxiety and self-loathing, struggling with her identity as a Chinese teenager in the US (her used name not being her birthname, and having the option to butcher your name's pronunciation) and a closeted lesbian (or something like that says the game). *well, there is a way.
Along the way you are introduced to a handful of characters: Emily, a trans woman still in the closet, Aubrey, a girl Karen had a crush on also part of the Science Olympiad team, and Miri, Karen's only friend. There is also Karen's parents and her little brother, Kevin; Professor Chen and his grad student; the rest of the Science Olympiad Team; and the other families attending the Church. Through out the game (and your choices) you get to learn more about these characters, like how Emily deals with her family's trans/homophobia, or Miri's feelings towards you, your family's history...* The storylets really shine here, giving you crumbles here and there, forcing you to piece those back together (and forces you down a certain path to learn everything). *Even after playing multiple times, I have yet to found all variations.
And at the centre of it all, Karen, the very flawed teenager. Yet, even with her self-deprecation and anxious spirals, with the awkward way she interacts with other people, with dealing with different cultural values and expectations about her life, or with her inability to stand up to herself (partly because of her guilt of "having it easy" compared to older generations), Karen stays a character you want to root for. You want to help her win that pageant and be more sure of herself. You want her to be more confident in her identity (and get a girlfriend). You want her to find her passions (in science?) and win accolades. You want to pluck her from her stressful world, wrap her in a blanket, kiss her on her forehead, and tell her that everything will be ok.
The whole game is filled with such genuine interactions, with teenagers blurting out their deepest secrets to strangers, declaring their love to one another even after but a few meetings, being self-loathing with a self they don't recognise or don't want to be anymore but unable to leave that shell, trying to handle the stress and anxiety of the expectations of others and not being able to reach those. And those are made all the more vibrant through Karen's inability to react "properly". Faced with bad and worse choices, you get to experience that anxiety of what would happen if I say or do the wrong thing. It feels genuine, because it feels real and lived through.
As the ending came around, and you get the rundown of Karen's actions, it felt like, while winning the pageant is definitely one/the goal, the journey was much sweeter than the destination. And that's what keeps making me want to come back to it...
Some other notes:
The visual of Dendry is quite reminiscent of ChoiceScript games, with its simple and contrasting colours and choice box or its achievements list; as well as Ink games in the story/storylets parts, as the text linked to the chosen option is appended to the main body, breaking only when the storylet ends and you need to pick another one or the story needs a break. It's honestly fun to see how two program can be merged (visually) and work this way.
There's kind of a fun parallel between Pageant and Great-grandmother and the war in the way the characters of Karen and Emily are portrayed similarly to Zhang and Yan. The first is socially awkward, introverted and filled with anxiety; the second is out-going, harbouring a secret, and yearning to live their truth. But this is only obvious if you do interact with Emily in this game.

AAPI Heritage Month: Mysteries to Read
The Red Palace by June Hur
Joseon (Korea), 1758. There are few options available to illegitimate daughters in the capital city, but through hard work and study, eighteen-year-old Hyeon has earned a position as a palace nurse. All she wants is to keep her head down, do a good job, and perhaps finally win her estranged father's approval. But Hyeon is suddenly thrust into the dark and dangerous world of court politics when someone murders four women in a single night, and the prime suspect is Hyeon's closest friend and mentor. Determined to prove her beloved teacher's innocence, Hyeon launches her own secret investigation. In her hunt for the truth, she encounters Eojin, a young police inspector also searching for the killer. When evidence begins to point to the Crown Prince himself as the murderer, Hyeon and Eojin must work together to search the darkest corners of the palace to uncover the deadly secrets behind the bloodshed.
Homicide and Halo-Halo by Mia P. Manansala
Things are heating up for Lila Macapagal. Not in her love life, which she insists on keeping nonexistent despite the attention of two very eligible bachelors. Or her professional life, since she can't bring herself to open her new cafe after the unpleasantness that occurred a few months ago at her aunt's Filipino restaurant, Tita Rosie's Kitchen. No, things are heating up quite literally, since summer, her least favorite season, has just started. To add to her feelings of sticky unease, Lila's little town of Shady Palms has resurrected the Miss Teen Shady Palms Beauty Pageant, which she won many years ago--a fact that serves as a wedge between Lila and her cousin slash rival, Bernadette. But when the head judge of the pageant is murdered and Bernadette becomes the main suspect, the two must put aside their differences and solve the case--because it looks like one of them might be next.
Four Aunties and a Wedding by Jesse Q. Sutanto
Meddy Chan has been to countless weddings, but she never imagined how her own would turn out. Now the day has arrived, and she can't wait to marry her college sweetheart, Nathan. Instead of having Ma and the aunts cater to her wedding, Meddy wants them to enjoy the day as guests. As a compromise, they find the perfect wedding vendors: a Chinese-Indonesian family-run company just like theirs. Meddy is hesitant at first, but she hits it off right away with the wedding photographer, Staphanie, who reminds Meddy of herself, down to the unfortunately misspelled name. Meddy realizes that is where their similarities end, however, when she overhears Staphanie talking about taking out a target. Horrified, Meddy can't believe Staphanie and her family aren't just like her own, they are The Family--actual mafia, and they're using Meddy's wedding as a chance to conduct shady business. Her aunties and mother won't let Meddy's wedding ceremony become a murder scene--over their dead bodies--and will do whatever it takes to save her special day, even if it means taking on the mafia.
Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li
History is told by the conquerors. Across the Western world, museums display the spoils of war, of conquest, of colonialism: priceless pieces of art looted from other countries, kept even now. Will Chen plans to steal them back. A senior at Harvard, Will fits comfortably in his carefully curated roles: a perfect student, an art history major and sometimes artist, the eldest son who has always been his parents’ American Dream. But when a mysterious Chinese benefactor reaches out with an impossible—and illegal—job offer, Will finds himself something else as well: the leader of a heist to steal back five priceless Chinese sculptures, looted from Beijing centuries ago. His crew is every heist archetype one can imagine—or at least, the closest he can get. A con artist: Irene Chen, a public policy major at Duke who can talk her way out of anything. A thief: Daniel Liang, a premed student with steady hands just as capable of lockpicking as suturing. A getaway driver: Lily Wu, an engineering major who races cars in her free time. A hacker: Alex Huang, an MIT dropout turned Silicon Valley software engineer. Each member of his crew has their own complicated relationship with China and the identity they’ve cultivated as Chinese Americans, but when Will asks, none of them can turn him down. Because if they succeed? They earn fifty million dollars—and a chance to make history. But if they fail, it will mean not just the loss of everything they’ve dreamed for themselves but yet another thwarted attempt to take back what colonialism has stolen. Equal parts beautiful, thoughtful, and thrilling, Portrait of a Thief is a cultural heist and an examination of Chinese American identity, as well as a necessary critique of the lingering effects of colonialism.

Another request/ask/answer thingy:
The Bat fam are shopping and a lady stops them frantically and excitedly asking if Dami was between the ages of 7-19 and when Bruce confirms he is the lady hands him a paper and holds out a clip board telling him all about their talent show (like how little girls do beauty pageants and stuff, Since Damian has numerous talents: playing violin, numerous instruments, painting, I’m sure singing and dancing (I doubt Talia wouldn’t make sure he knew how to do such things) and that she’s always observed just how talented the Wayne’s are and that Damian would be perfect to enter in the contest and that the deadline is 5:00pm. And Bruce politely declines and a couple of kids-snotty rich ones that Dami recognizes form his class come up to make fun of him and snicker saying Dami wouldn’t really do too well in a talent show, while making racist comments about his heritage. So Dami decides to go back and sign up PURELY to prove to them that whether he’s fully white, Arabic, Chinese, or whatever it doesn’t matter because in a talent show…having talent and confidence is ALL that matters…two things Damian definitely excels perfectly in.
1.) how does the Batfam (this includes Anastasia) react to Damian entering a talent show, because he’s never done something like that before?
After entering word gets out that Damian Wayne entered and the list went from 4 contestants to 20-30, so The entire Batfam (Alfred as well) show up to support their little gremlin, go back stage to see Dami and see him getting ready. Dick is helping out on anything he needs his outfit, makeup to help his green eyes pop more, and Alfred his helping with his hair.
Dami’s outfit: https://nataliarw2004.tumblr.com/post/686169086929108992/what-damian-would-wear-while-figure-skating-for-a
2.) how does the Batfam, Kent’s, & Diana react to Damian’s outfit and hair in the link?
Dami apologizes to Jon about canceling their afternoon movie for this and Jon is okay with it because this is cooler and they should both enter again.
Batfam leave they make fun of the other talents because the age range is 7-19 (so form Jon & Damian to Tim and Steph) and they were bullying Dami so payback, even the Kent’s and maybe a little of the JL show up especially Clark and Diana.
The Batfam think dami will do the violin or paint, but their not sure because Dick and Alfred coached Damian on choosing what he was gonna do and kept it from everyone else as a surprise….so when it’s Damian’s turn….he’s smiling brightly like a regular child his age looking happy and excited before confidently pulling off an amazing singing and ice skating act and it was amazing because the Batfam didn’t even know Dami could sing or ICE SKATE!-they were sure he could dance but not sing..he def got Bruce’s singing voice.
Dami’s determined to win because he wants to prove to those rich kids that he’s capable of competing and winning in talent shows regardless of his race.
Damian’s Performance: https://href.li/?https://youtu.be/q_c3hBrrcOs
(
3.) how does The Batfam, the Kent’s, & Diana react to Damian’s ice skating performance?
4.) at 2:29-2:36 Damian flirts with the crowd with such charisma it would make Dick proud as it gets an especially large cheer from the crowds, how does the Batfam, kent’s, & Diana react to Damian’s flirting?
5.) how do they react to the crowd cheering loudly when Damian flirts with the crowd?
Damian’s singing and song he chose: https://youtu.be/hsmHt7vD4QE
6.) how does the Batfam & Kent’s & Diana react to Damian’s singing voice?
Let’s be honest Dick is prolly in the walk way holding a huge camera in his hand recording and reciting some of the dance moves like a mom just like the mom did in Mean Girls during the plastics Christmas dance.
7.) how does the Batfam, Kent’s, & Diana react to seeing Dick holding a huge camera and dancing in the walkway like the mom from Mean girls did during their Christmas dance?
Damian wins of course.
8.) how does Dami, Batfam, Kent’s, & Diana react to Damian wining getting a 10/10, 11/10, & a 11/10 as his score?
some of them were holding back their laughter, after all Damian again proving that he doesn't take shit home and that he has several talents, Dick was a little worried because Damian didn't do this before maybe Damian got hurt with the comment
They' find the outfit the cutest, some.of them talk some not, but i can say that everyone got a lot of photos, and i can also add that now Jon can brag to everyone in the contest that his friend have so many talents and didn't saw anyone doing better
Clark and Lois at first we're worried that Damian might fall but after some time they started to cheer and cheer up Damian from the audience, Bruce is quite proud and every other siblings looks surprised but well they're proud of their lil bro, Diana is cheering in loud voice, and if anyone even dare say something bad about her almost-nephew she gonna seriously start a fight.
They're all laughing, Jason is recording to save for Bribery, Damian is really good at the performance and talking to people
They're all just can't keep but also cheer to him, seriously if Damian didn't win this somehow something is really wrong with the Contest
Bruce loved it, well sincerely he was totally marveled, his dad used to sing to him when was sleep time so he was totally proud, Tim is putting this on YouTube and better Damian receive all the likes he deserves, Cass may or may be thinking on starting pick Damian to her Dance performances too, Dick is actually recording and saving it to himself.
They can't help but cannot stop the smiles of appear on their faces, Jason and Stephanie are legally thinking on go dance with Dick too, Diana is actually going and everyone is crackling.
They are not surprised but this doesn't mean they're not happy, they're literally cheering with everyone, Damian deserved this and deserved a lot more
Batfam is concerned and proud of having this little jewel on family and now knowing that he gonna do everything if you tease him enough, this knowledge gonna be saved.
Diana totally thinks on invite the Wayne's to any party that shows up to see the reactions of the rest of the fam to Damian's singing voice
Now that the Kents know that Damian can dance let just say that he can't Avoid participating in the festival dances

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo - Book Review
Tumblr media
8/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
TW: homophobia, racism (slurs), miscarriage, misogyny, sex (non graphic), underage drinking
(TWs are ranked in order of severity, please take them seriously!)
Last Night At The Telegraph Club had been sitting in my virtual TBR for months, and my bookshelf even longer. I’m so glad I finally got around to it this pride month!
I will say right off the bat that after reading I don’t necessarily agree with how it was marketed; the back of the book labeled it a thriller, whereas I felt like it was way less thriller and more historical fiction (I like both so this wasn’t a problem, just a heads up)
I fell in love with the characters, and even though it was a pretty slow-paced read I liked that I could enjoy it leisurely, put-it-down-and-pick-it-back-up-later type of vibe.
The story is set in California during what’s known as the “Red Scare” - when the U.S. government was firing employees and detaining anyone suspected of communist ties. Because of this national suspicion, Chinese Americans were especially at risk of discrimination and sudden deportation. In the midst of this, there’s teenage girl - Lily Hu - coming to terms with her sexuality and falling in love for the first time.
The book is incredibly well researched, and it was cool to get the stories of other members of Lily’s family. It really rounded them out as characters, as people instead of plot devices.
I think this book is a great read for anyone coming to terms with their sexuality or people who enjoy reading coming of age. I’ve also always been really interested in the history of queer nightclubs during the 50s, as “safe spaces” and this book taught me a lot! (Not to mention the aesthetic is just gorgeous)
Tumblr media
Summary:
“That book. It was about two women, and they fell in love with each other. And then Lily asked the question that had taken root in her, that was even now unfurling its leaves and demanding to be shown the sun: Have you ever heard of such a thing?
Seventeen-year-old Lily Hu can't remember exactly when the question took root, but the answer was in full bloom the moment she and Kathleen Miller walked under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club.
America in 1954 is not a safe place for two girls to fall in love, especially not in Chinatown. Red-Scare paranoia threatens everyone, including Chinese Americans like Lily. With deportation looming over her father--despite his hard-won citizenship--Lily and Kath risk everything to let their love see the light of day.”
TL;DR Two girls (one Chinese American, one white) fall in love at a gay nightclub in San Francisco during the 1950s amidst the Red Scare and fight to stay together despite their circumstances.
Tumblr media
^lots of smoking & drinking in this book bc.. it was the 50s
So on to representation:
(Not really an own voices review, just saying what I noticed)
A good portion of the book takes place in Chinatown, either in Lily’s home or the greater community. Lily’s family celebrates the Chinese New Year while her best friend Shirley takes part in the Miss Chinatown Beauty pageant. The edge of Chinatown is located close to a gay nightclub called The Telegraph Club, and these are all historically accurate- the beauty pageant actually happened as an effort for the Chinese American community to better assimilate during the Red Scare.
There are moments when Lily is in predominantly white spaces that she has uncomfortable encounters with white queer people - they call her things like “China doll” as if it’s a compliment. Today this is definitely not okay to call someone, and even back then it made Lily uncomfortable, despite her wanting to fit in with those queer spaces. I think Malinda Lo did a really good job of showing this reality - the difficulty queer POC face when entering white queer spaces.
Kath, Lily’s love interest, is Italian. This isn’t touched on too much aside from sharing food from their respective cultures.
One thing I appreciated about the lgbtq+ rep in this book was it really addressed how difficult it is fight comphet, or compulsory heterosexuality. Even when someone isn’t in the closet, your family, friends, and community can try to force you back inside for their comfortability. What Lily and Kath go through is far from easy and reflects situations still faced by LGBTQ+ people today.
Finally, here’s a pic of some actual Ms. Chinatown contestants that was in the author’s bibliography/after notes (always read those!)

What I Loved:
For this book, I loved that it told more than one story. Sure, there’s the obvious storyline of Kath and Lily’s romance. But there’s also the story of Shirley and Lily’s tumultuous friendship, the story of Lily’s aunt and her life in a new country, the flashbacks to the story of Lily’s mother and father. There’s the story of Tommy Andrews, male impersonator and performer at The Telegraph Club, the story of queer women who boldly went out at night to an illegal establishment to watch those performances.
There’s the story of love in there because of this. All these people are tied together in such different ways, all just trying to love the best they can. I think that’s beautiful.
I also liked how the book didn’t idealize romance. There were times when Kath and Lily fought, when they made up, when they made out in janitor’s closets and it wasn’t at all like in the movies. They had to be vigilant with how they loved eachother, aware of every brush of their hands, and as a queer girl myself I felt really seen. It’s hard loving in a way that your world condemns as “wrong” or “sinful”. Especially as teenagers, when the LGBTQ+ scene is so dominated by adults, it’s difficult to find a place for us.
Back then, and now, it’s challenging to find spaces to celebrate queerness that aren’t also populated by mature themes (drinking, smoking, s*x, etc).
Note: Gay relationships are so taboo that society has dubbed them “mature content” to the point where a simple gesture like holding hands or a peck on the cheek can be labeled Rated R, making it hard for queer youth to preserve the innocent part of themselves and their relationships. Ex. People losing their minds over the lesbian grandmas from Lightyear.
The imagery was raw and there were definitely some scenes that left me emotional, especially when it came to Lily and her family/friends. Reconciling queer identity within communities of color is difficult because two kinds of love appear almost opposed to each other. Lily’s struggle with this hit close to home for me.

^my face during every scene where Shirley was talking (ily Lan Wangji😭)
Why I couldn’t give it a 10:
Honesty it came down to pacing. There were some parts where I felt the story was moving too slowly, or that certain copious amounts of detail were unnecessary and detracted from figuring out what was going on. At times I simply felt bored, because a page or two read like a history textbook or article. I understand needing to set the scene with historical fiction, but placing that in the middle of something happening took me out of the moment. I felt like it could have been better done if a character had given that background in dialogue (shorter) or if it was at the beginning of the scene. Putting it in the middle made it feel abrupt, and having a mini history lesson as one character’s thoughts (?) read more like the author trying to give me all of this (admittedly interesting) information about the event and political environment of the time.
I appreciate it, but here there’s a time and a place and I felt like it could have been done separately. That being said, I am in awe of how much effort was put into researching. This is by far one of the best researched historical fiction books I’ve ever read - I enjoyed reading the author’s note a lot!
Tumblr media
I sincerely recommend to:
History buffs (especially if you’re curious about Chinese American/queer history)🔎
Fans of historical fiction novels (ex. Number the Stars, Promises to the Dead)📕
Fans of Luck of the Titanic/The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee 🚢
Closeted gay people (get a false cover if you need to!)🚪
Anyone looking to diversify their LGBTQ+ reading selection (y’all can’t all just be reading The Ones We Burn 🤢)
In hindsight, it could be that the background felt abrupt because I haven’t read historical fiction in a while - can’t even think of a time when I’ve read queer historical fiction before! Grateful to Lo for bringing this much needed representation ❤️
Overall, it was a good book and I enjoyed it! It definitely reinforced by desire to move to California (rip to my wallet) 🕊 Lily is a space nerd like me so that was awesome too 🪐
I also made a Pinterest board for this book since I kept thinking about it, here are some of my favorite additions:

“The vast majority of fiction about queer women is contemporary because until very recently, most people denied the fact that queer people even existed before modern times. Historical fiction in America and in the West is certainly very white-centric - just like all fiction - and I’d definitely love to read more historical fiction about queer people of color.”

Toku Tuesday 47 - Michelle Yeoh
Hi friends!
Very quick intro to Toku Tuesday tonight, since we’ve basically already covered what is to be said of Daniels on Toku Tuesday 45 and the followup post; moreover I wrote about Everything, Everywhere yesterday. Now it’s available on streaming services, which means in turn it can spread to the pirates, and that means it’s taking up about half the remaining space on my SSD.
I should probably do something about that...
To accompany that, let’s make our theme tonight the cornerstone of the film, lead actress Michelle Yeoh. Which makes this also an excuse to watch the film we didn’t manage to watch on TT #45: Yes, Madam (1985), her debut film. Yeoh would of course go on to be a huuuge martial arts star taking an enormous variety of roles in both China and the US.
Conveniently, Accented Cinema, go-to ‘youtuber who knows about the Chinese film industry’, just released a video about her...
youtube
So, as Accented discusses...
Yeoh got her start in beauty pageants and then shooting ads - starting with one alongside Jackie Chan! - but she was eager to take on action roles at the time nigh exclusively male; and got her opportunity when D&B Films decided to make an action film starring two women to set itself apart from the other ‘heroic bloodshed’ films of the time (c.f. TT #32). Hence Yes, Madam; Yeoh did all her own stunts and generally made everyone sit up and take notice.
She performed in a few more films with D&B, in each one wearing a similar short-haired look in contrast to her previous image. In this period, there was a heavy expectation that women movie stars in Hong Kong should marry and retire early, and Yeoh accordingly married the head of D&B films... but divorced him five years later to return to acting, landing alongside Jackie Chan once again in Police Story III (1992) as a military commander. This set up an extraordinarily prolific 90s; at first mostly action movies but starting with The Stunt Double (A Jin de gu shi) in 1996, increasingly more drama-oriented roles, leading up to going to Taiwan for her famous performance as conflicted matriach (and elite martial artist, some things don’t change) Yu Shu Lien in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000.
Tumblr media
Parallel to this, there is another strand. I hate to talk about James Bond in any capacity whatsoever, but hey, it’s part of this story. James Bond movies, one of my country’s most odious exports after like... colonialism, have a tradition of ‘Bond girls’, (at least) one in each movie; the designated Hot Girl who inevitably ends up getting fucked by the avatar of aspirational British masculinity. So, Accented reports, in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), they attempted to cash in on the kung fu trend by hiring Michelle Yeoh for the role; a love interest but in a new model of more action-oriented Bond girl.
The positive upshot of this is that, well, it established her internationally in the role of ‘glamorous ass kicker’ as Accented puts it. But from this point it seems she ascended to a power level where she could play pretty much anyone, and tracing her filmography at this point sees her playing in both US and Hong Kong productions pretty much equally: wuxia, historical dramas, quite a lot of sci-fi, even animated films (from comedy-wuxia to... minions, huh?)...
OK, what more to say than ‘dang, this actor sure acted in a lot of films over her acting career’? Usually when I write these things I end up focusing on directors, or perhaps studios or countries, perhaps since you can tie the story to the content of the art in a fairly direct way. Yeoh’s definitely had her influence: from the very beginning she pushed hard for, as an example, women to get more action roles, and was extremely successful not just in getting her own career out of it, but in that ugly mercenary system, establishing that this could sell to help open the possibility of other women getting such roles. The same goes for, well, the more-than-a-little fraught history of Asian characters in American movies; she’s evidently made quite a point of not getting pigeonholed. (Something relevant to Everything, Everywhere, which is in part about reintroducing depth to such limited roles.)
Tumblr media
If you watch the video essay above, there’s a really interesting part at the end where Accented contrasts two superficially similar performances, one as the experienced geisha Mameha in Memoirs of a Geisha, the other as rich matriarch Eleanor in Crazy Rich Asians, and highlighting the different kinds of confidence that Yeoh performs in e.g. walks. I really like this kind of observation, because it’s the kind of breakdown I’m going to need to learn to perform more and more if i’m gonna git gud an animator. Anyway, it’s not merely that she insists on getting cast in different roles, but that she has the immense skill needed to give those distinct performances appropriate to each one.
Still, does the success of one actor really make that much difference to the ebb and flow of the ~film industry~, let alone society at large? Well, maybe. Perhaps more so than anyone in a film, even the director, actors are not just the people themselves, but elaborate clusters of symbols build up by the reproduction of their image and insertion into narratives. Michelle Yeoh isn’t just the flesh-and-blood human, who very likely none of us will ever meet, but the constructed icon ‘Michelle Yeoh’ built by the camera and the marketing machine who comes to represent certain things in the world. Is the magic power invested in this supervening egregore the result of the personal choices and talents of Yeoh herself, or did the historical moment of the mid 1980s with its various gender, economic etc. dynamics have a slot in it for someone a bit like her, and she’s the one who had the luck to get selected by history? Well, probably something of both, eh.
Regardless of what contingent history led us to this point, she’s really fucking good at acting and it’s a joy to watch her in movies.
So!! If you’d like to do just that, at around 8pm (ish) UK time, roughly five hours hence, we will gather to observe the two ends of Yeoh’s career (so far!) with Yes, Madam (1985) and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once (2022) at twitch.tv/canmom !
(considering switching to picarto but let’s stick with what we know for now since i’m not sure how copyright enforcement works there).

"DR. NO" (1962) 60th Anniversary Review
Tumblr media
Last month, October 2022, marked the 60th anniversary of "DR. NO", the first James Bond movie produced by EON Productions. Here is my review of the movie:
"DR. NO" (1962) 60th Anniversary Review This 1962 movie marked the cinematic debut of EON Production's James Bond franchise, created by Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. Sean Connery also made his debut in this film as the MI-6 agent, James Bond. Although many critics and fans consider film as one of the more impressive in the franchise, I honestly cannot say that I share their opinion. Based on Ian Fleming's 1958 novel, "DR. NO" begins with the murder of MI-6 agent Strangeways and his secretary by a trio of assassins in Jamaica. Fellow MI-6 agent James Bond is ordered by his superior, "M", to investigate the agent’s death and eventually stumbles upon a plot by Dr. Julius No, an agent of the criminal organization SPECTRE, to disrupt the U.S. space program for the Chinese Republic. As I had stated earlier, I have never considered "DR. NO" as one of the more impressive entries of the Bond franchise. In fact, it is one of my least favorite Bond movies of all time. The main problem I had with "DR. NO" was the schizophrenic script written by Richard Maibaum, Johanna Harwood, and Berkely Mather that featured an unbalanced mixture of genres. I suppose they had no choice. After all, they simply wrote a close adaptation of Fleming's novel. And Fleming never struck me as the world's greatest novelist. The story began as a mystery thriller, as Bond tried to figure out who was behind Strangeways' death. Unfortunately, the movie transformed into a fantasy-style adventure when Bond and one of his CIA contacts, Quarrel made their way to Dr. No's Crab Key Island in order to disrupt the villain's plot. A part of me wishes that Young and the screenwriters had made changes in Fleming's story. The stilted dialogue peppered throughout the movie only made matters even worse for me. The worst line came out of the mouth of former beauty pageant winner, Marguerite LeWars, who portrayed a photographer working for SPECTRE.  I take that back.  Miss LeWars never spoke that line.  It came from the mouth of the actress hired to dub her voice.  Although Miss LeWars never spoke the line, it struck me as so bad that I will not even repeat it. Even Connery was guilty of spewing some wooden dialogue. In fact, his performance seemed as uneven as the movie’s story and production style. In many scenes, he seemed to be the epitome of the smooth British agent. And in other scenes – especially with Jack Lord, who was the first actor to portray CIA agent Felix Leiter – he came off as gauche and wooden. Mr. Lord, on the other hand, gave a consistently polished and performance as the sardonic Agent Leiter. Much has been made of Ursula Andress’ performance as "Bond Girl No.1" Honey Ryder – especially her famous first appearance when her character emerges upon a beach. Frankly, I have never been able to sense the magic of that moment. Nor did I find Andress' presence in the movie particularly impressive. Not only was her character irrelevant to the story, but she failed to aid Bond’s attempts to defeat Dr. No. I first became a fan of Joseph Wiseman ever since I noticed his sly and subtle performance as a 1960s gangster in the Michael Mann TV series, "CRIME STORY". But I was not that impressed by his Dr. Julius No, a character that simply bored me to tears. I might as well say the same about Anthony Dawson’s performance as SPECTRE agent, Professor Dent. Many fans have been waxing lyrical over a scene featuring his death at Bond's hand. Personally, I found Bond's actions unprofessional. The MI-6 agent could have easily drugged the SPECTRE operative, removed any inconvenient cyanide pills and had MI-6 "question" him.  Instead, Bond killed him in cold blood . . . and lost any chance to get more information from Dent.  Moron.  "DR. NO" can boast first-class performances by American-born John Kitzmiller as the exuberant Jamaican CIA contact, Quarrel. And Zena Marshall gave a solid, yet subtle performance as Professor Dent’s Eurasian secretary and SPECTRE agent, Miss Taro. It is only too bad that the producers and Terence Young could not find genuine Eurasians for both the Dr. No and Miss Taro roles. But I guess that would not have been possible in 1962. "DR. NO" featured some beautiful photography of Jamaica from cinematographer Ted Moore. Monty Norman not only provided a first-rate musical score, but he also delivered the original "James Bond" theme. However, some of the movie's flaws – namely the uneven script and direction by Terence Young, along with the wooden dialogue, makes "DR. NO" vastly overrated in my eyes. But what can I expect from a movie that consistently threatens to put me to sleep two-thirds into the story?
