hello 💓 do you know what happened with Near after everything? I finished Death Note days ago and his relationship with Mello left me hooked. I am reading BB Los Angeles case and I am stunned by how many times he referred to Near as the only one who could read his case.
Hi!! You're in luck, because there IS actually an in-universe answer to this. If you only watched the anime, you might not have seen this scene:
Tumblr media
This is exactly a year after the end of the Kira case. Near is 19 here and has now taken over the role of L. He's also eating chocolate to pay homage to Mello.
Then there are two one-shots that take place years later. I'm assuming you haven't read those so I won't spoil them, but essentially they both show Near solving Kira-related cases. The first one takes place in February 2013, three years after Light's death, when Near is 21:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nothing is explicitly stated about what he's been doing over the past three years, but there are some clues. He's clearly still working as L, and he seems to be working mostly by himself, with occasional visits from Rester and Lidner. Gevanni is shown watching a broadcast from an office with Rester and Lidner, so presumably he still works with them too. In the panel on the right, we can also see that Near kept L and Mello's puppets from the original Kira case.
The second one-shot is set in May 2019, when Near is 27:
Tumblr media
Gevanni does not appear in this story, but Rester and Lidner visit Near again, so it seems like they have continued to work with him. Either way, Near is definitely still working as L.
So those are all Near's post-canon appearances! What we can gather from all of this is that Near started working as L a maximum of six months after the end of the Kira case and continues to do so ten years later, that Rester and Lidner (and possibly Gevanni) continue to work with him in some capacity, and he does still think about Mello.

for @mellowtheoristpainter. answering here because price brain go brrr
notes: this is only about reboot!price. i'm not super knowledgeable about the military. this is 100% my opinion. would love to hear other's thoughts. and, some of this is conjecture because we just don't know enough about price.
this recent post of mine is an intro on my thoughts re:price: posty post. cap price is my favorite cod man and a complicated character. he's an insidious motherfucker.
i think to expand upon it, i want to talk about price and gaz specifically.
in the post you're referring to, i also use the tag #he's all business all about the mission. 'old comrades' in mw 2019 is a good illustration that shows how far price is willing to go to accomplish a mission. he'll use whatever means he has to to achieve it and in that case, it's the butcher's wife and child - 'truth serum'. price even makes a comment (i don't have the transcript in front of me) that boils down to "the butcher has no problem hurting children" - a callback to the embassy mission, where early on, we see a child run from the butcher and is presumably shot and killed (the death is hidden by smoke iirc). now i don't think price had intentions to kill the butcher's family, but something tells me it's not the first time he's used the 'truth serum' tactic.
i won't get into the full gloves off speech in mw 2019, but i AM looking forward to seeing how it continues in the franchise. see here for a scrap of what i'd like to see in future games: posty post
also, tats (@stuffireadandenjoy) added great commentary to that post about the embassy line.
when we first meet price in the reboot, it's at piccadilly, where he throws a man with a bomb locked to his chest over a railing to save the lives of other hostages. ngl when i play, i feel awful, but i still rationalize it. not getting into a philosophical debate on morality here, but the scene's upsetting. it's supposed to be upsetting. the entire franchise is upsetting.
but that's not the only interesting thing about that mission to me. gaz tries and fails to open the locked suicide vest. price makes the decision for gaz. gaz, even though there's only ~5 secs left on the timer, insists he can get it. price doesn't just outrank him - he's older and more experienced. price shoves gaz away, pitches the guy over the balcony, thus saving the rest of the hostages. again we can see where this was a good decision despite it being an awful one. it establishes john price as a character that can 'rise above' to make the hard choices.
gaz is a great character, hands down, love the man. (also a war criminal. anyway.) but i think he's especially interesting in these interactions with price. we see this young sergeant, fairly early career (compared to price), who is frustrated by the limitations and red tape of his job. joins price when price validates his anger post-piccadilly. gaz was probably like "fucking finally someone higher up who gets it". the way price looks at him in that scene too -- the man is listening. observing. he sees someone he can bring under his wing and help shape him. there is a reason he recruits gaz for tf 141. i think price sees gaz as a protege/successor.
ok this is getting long so here's an unceremonious wrap-up: in conclusion, price has had to make fucked up choices in pursuit of The Mission™. some he doesn't want to make (see: mwiii, i blame shepherd for EVERYTHING) and some he seems to have no problems making (piccadilly, using 'truth serum'). he learned at some point in his career he can take the gloves off and get dirty because what matters is mission success. the end justifies the means.
i haven't even touched on the military propaganda of it all, either. but smarter and hotter people than i have done that on this site.
unfortunately, i am still riddled with a disease called priceaholicism.
if you read this far and don't hate me, thank you! 🫶

The zionist settler colony and regime is a white surpemacist establishment. zionists are white supremacists. (caption under reel)
from essad_68, 19/Feb/2024:
🇵🇸Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to “liberate” black people in Africa, after killing over 10,000 children in Gaza within 100 days.
⏩ Let’s be clear: Israel is not Africa’s friend, and here are some separate yet related facts to support this statement:
⭕ Haftom Zarhum was the first African refugee to be lynched by Israelis in a public place in full view of CCTV cameras, but he would not be the last. It is worth noting that Zarhum was a 19-year-old Israeli soldier, yet all the perpetrators saw was the colour of his skin. The following year, two Israeli teens killed another African refugee, Babikir Ali Adham-Abdo, beating him to death right outside of the city hall of Petach Tikvah, a Tel Aviv suburb. Source: Al Jazeera. Black lives do not matter in Israel.
⭕ On March 17, 2018, one of Israel’s two chief rabbis, Yitzhak Yosef, called black people “monkeys” and the Hebrew equivalent of the N-word in his weekly sermon. Source: Al Jazeera. Black lives do not matter in Israel.
⭕️ On March 19, 2018, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a public speech that the arrival of non-Jewish African refugees was “much worse” for Israel than “severe attacks by Sinai terrorists.” Source: Al Jazeera. Black lives do not matter in Israel.
⭕️ Under Israel’s Law of Return, any Jew anywhere in the world has the right to immigrate to Israel. But there’s one notable exemption: Ethiopian Jews. For years, Ethiopian Jews have been blocked from joining their relatives living in Israel, while other white Jewish migrants and refugees from Ukraine have been welcomed in their thousands. Put simply, Ethiopian Jews have the wrong skin colour for Israel’s ethno-religious demographic project to be considered fully Jewish. Source: TheNewArab. For Israel, black Ethiopian Jews are not Jewish enough.
⭕️ In 2019, further Black Lives Matter protests took place after 18-year-old Ethiopian Israeli Solomon Teka was shot and killed by an off-duty Israeli police officer. Source: TheNewArab. For Israel, black Ethiopian Jews are not Jewish enough.

Wolves They Both Must Be
Jon Snow x Sansa Stark
Summary: “Did you bend the knee to save the North, or because you love her?”
Jon snaps his head up at Sansa’s question. Her eyes are brimming and hot and he can suddenly see this is not the argument he thought they were having. This is something else. Something deeper and much more intimate.
OR
The missing scene we deserved in 8x01
Author's Note: I first published this one shot on AO3 in 2019 and then a few years later I wrote a sequel that just sat in my google docs collecting digital dust. I may turn it into a series if there's enough interest so please let me know by liking, commenting, and reblogging if you want more.

part one - part two
“Did you bend the knee to save the North, or because you love her?”
Jon snaps his head up at Sansa’s question. Her eyes are brimming and hot and he can suddenly see this is not the argument he thought they were having. This is something else. Something deeper and much more intimate.
She tries to conceal the dread in her eyes, but he knows her. This attempt to hide her heart from him makes her pain all the more transparent. He sees in her eyes that she is breaking and the sight of it breaks him too.
It cracks him wide open.
Every memory and every touch, every heated quarrel like the one they are having now, every smile and tear, and every racing heart. Every night he took himself in hand when the temptation was too intense to ignore. Every shameful, possessive, and obsessive thought he tried to bury deep has been unearthed by this moment, by this unspoken admission of hers. By the unshed tears in her pale blue eyes, and the foreboding he finds in them.
He fears he is mistaken to think that she might love him the way he has tried not to love her. But they have so little time before the dead march down their doorstep, and he has grown beyond weary of this lie.
So he treads carefully and takes a measured step forward.
“Sansa, I don’t love her.”
A heavy, shuddering breath escapes from her lips. The undeniable relief is evident in the softening of her shoulders and the smoothing of the crease between her brows. In the way the corner of her mouth lifts slightly.
It gives him a surge of hope and he realizes this may be his last chance. As hard as he will fight he knows they may very well die in this battle. He wants not for either of them to perish without Sansa knowing how desperately and deeply she is loved.
“There is only one woman who possesses my heart, Sansa,” Jon confesses, her name rolling softly off of his tongue before his voice takes on a guttural tone, “and it is not her. It has never been, and never will be her.”
Sansa’s eyes narrow and she draws in a slow breath, her chest gently heaving in what looks like defense, and he hopes more than any hope that his instinct has not deceived him.
“To whom does your heart belong?” She asks him, trepidatiously.
“You know,” Jon whispers, so quietly he thinks she may not have heard him.
But then she reaches out her trembling hand to him and he clasps it in both of his. Gazing down at the soft skin cradled between his calloused palms, a teardrop lands upon her knuckle and he brings it to his lips to kiss the cool saltiness away.
She sweeps her fingers over his forehead, pausing to gently rub her thumb across the scar above his eyebrow. His eyes slowly slide shut at the sensation of her attentive touch. And when she cups his bearded jaw he leans into it, releasing a breath he hadn’t realized he had been holding since first he laid eyes on this red-haired specter at Castle Black.
Sansa steps gingerly into his space, careful and cautious as if he were an untamed animal. And maybe he is. What came back from death must have been half-beast at least. There is no other way to explain the twisted affections he has held for his father’s daughter all of these many moons.
But she is leaning into him as well. She is pressing her forehead to his, setting his heart to race, pounding wildly back to life again (and again and again). If this love makes him a beast, then wolves they both must be because she is whispering his name like a honey-sweet song. And hers are the fingers twining through the curls at his neck as she softly bumps her nose against his.
Her breath, hot upon his mouth, beckons him to open his eyes and when he does he finds the fear in her own has been replaced by a wild hunger he never imagined she would possess for him. A sudden ferocity claims him and he tempers a growl. His fists find her hips and he pulls at her skirts, tugging her body closer to his.
He breathes her name. It’s almost a groan and definitely a question. Pulling his forehead from hers, he finds the answer in her eyes, now a deeper blue than he has ever seen them. They shift swiftly from his lips to his eyes and back again. She inclines her head forward ever so slightly and it is enough to give him the courage to lift his hands to her face and take her lips softly, gently into his.
The kiss is tentative and soft at first like drifting snowflakes brushing his skin. She opens her mouth to him and he relishes the taste of her lips, committing the sweetness of her perfect mouth to memory as he sweeps his tongue across hers.
Their hands roam, slow and careful at first. Releasing her face from his gentle grasp, he runs his fingers through her hair and slides his rough palms to cradle her neck and grasp the small of her back. He clutches her tightly to him, so close he knows not where he ends and she begins. The realization of it overwhelms him and he whimpers in relief. She hums in response.
Her delicate fingers pull at the leather strap in his hair and she grabs fistfuls, tugging gently at the freshly unbound curls.
A pulsating heat spreads from the core of Jon’s belly, intensifying at the sounds of Sansa’s soft, melodic moaning. The vibration of her song emanates into the lips that she begins to bite. He snarls at the delicious throbbing her teeth creates. It is everything Jon can do to keep from curling himself into her. From grabbing the back of her thighs and wrapping them around his waist to carry her into her bedchamber. From laying her down beneath him so that he may kiss the soft skin of her thighs and the wetness between them until she is breathless and howling his name.
But he refuses to test her limits, allowing her to take control and show him what she wants.
And as if sensing his intentions, she pushes herself into him until the back of his thighs bump against her desk. She grabs him by the waist and steers him to her chair. As she breaks away from their kiss she drags her hands up his chest and to his shoulders, pressing him down slowly onto the seat, all the while never taking her dark and heady eyes away from his. He gazes up at her perfect lips, swollen and reddened by his own. She is breathless and radiant and panting as heavily as he is.
And as he whispers her name, she pulls her skirts up to her knees and climbs onto his lap. He is hard beneath her and if she hadn’t noticed before she surely knows it now, and yet it doesn’t deter her from relaxing into him. She cradles his face in her hands and proceeds to kiss him deep and slow. It makes him bold enough to take hold of her hips and rub circles into the sharp bones there with his thumbs. She moves her mouth to his neck and tastes his racing pulse with her hot tongue, licking and nipping a trail up to his ear where she breathes his name on a quivering sigh.
He knows it’s wrong but the thrill that sends wave after wave of chills, and the deep-seated coiling in his gut at her ministrations, make him forget his honor. Or hers. And when she begins to arch and grind herself into his lap he can’t help but dig his fingers into the flesh of her thighs, pushing himself up to meet her movements and claim her mouth once again.
He has wanted this for too long, longer than he can even admit to himself. The feel of her softness, of her heat so close to his, sends his desire climbing so high and so fast he nearly spills right then like a green boy.
“Sansa,” he groans, reluctantly pulling away from the sweetness of her lips.
“Hmmm?”
He meant to put a stop to this most depraved entanglement, to tell her that he will not dishonor her. But as he gazes into her hooded eyes, so full of hope and desire, and remembers that soon they might both be dead, he can’t think of any reason to end a moment so deliciously akin to his shameful fantasies. And maybe the fact that he knows this is not just a reverie makes him daring enough to speak his most hidden secret into existence.
“Sansa, my heart is yours. Only ever yours.” The confession staunches the relentlessly bleeding ache in his chest and he is desperate for the relief of it.
“It has been yours since the moment I clapped eyes on you at Castle Black. It was then I knew why I was brought back from the nothingness of death. It is why I pushed myself out of that pit of men on the battlefield that day you came to save me. Why I swam to the surface of the freezing wight-infested water. It was for you. To protect you as I promised I always would. Everything I have done since then, all of it, has been to return home... to you.”
Sansa releases a tremulous breath and gently sweeps her thumbs across his cheeks. She kisses away the lingering dampness that the tears he hadn’t even realized he shed left upon his skin. With her hands on his chest, she pushes herself up and climbs away from his body. It aches from her sudden absence. And then she takes his hand in hers, pulls him up from the chair, and leads him quietly to her bedchamber.
Jon knows he should stop her. When she closes the door behind her. When her dress falls to her feet. When she undresses him and lays him down upon the furs atop her bed. But when he kisses her scars, and she kisses his, he forgets to care about all the reasons why they should stop.
And when he buries himself inside of her and draws her pleasure out, bringing silent tears from her shining eyes, he refuses to regret any love they make between them, forbidden or not.
And if they soon should die, at least for now they truly live.

(Billy Hargrove x fem¡OCMayfield)
Samantha Danielle Mayfield finally decides to move to Hawkins with her sister and mother, as well as her mother's new husband and his arrogant son, William "Billy" Hargrove. What they are unaware of is that, gradually, these step-siblings will discover that the line between contempt and passion is more fragile than they supposed, and what begins as shared hostility turns into an intense and undeniable attraction that both find themselves unable to reject.
warnings: read at your own risk, as it includes a continuous sexual environment, profanity, mention of death and suicide, stepsibling relationship, sex, and all its derivatives.
autor’s note: this work is entirely my own creation. that is to say, i have not based it on anyone else, so any resemblance to any other work is purely coincidental, as i have been using this format for all my stories since 2019. i hope you enjoy the story. if you find any translation errors, something you don't understand, or similar, please let me know :p
━━ ✧♡✧ ━━ ✧♡✧ ━━ ✧♡✧ ━━
Chapter One: Shot Throught The Heart - Bon Jovi
Samantha Danielle Mayfield. Yes, Mayfield. She found the surname Hargrove detestable.
Ever since that fateful day when Neil Hargrove took Susan from the arms of the two young girls' father, Samantha has been unable to forgive her mother. She chose to stay with her father indefinitely, firmly resolved not to see her mother's face again, or so she believed. Susan had "betrayed" the Mayfields, fracturing the relationship between Max and Samantha to the point of only allowing them sporadic encounters, plunging both sisters into deep sadness.
As the years passed, they got used to seeing each other only on weekends, and everything seemed to be going well. Until one day, a letter arrived at the Sam residence, which read:
"Hello Sammy,
I am writing to invite you to my wedding with Neil in a few months. We are very happy and wish to share our joy with you. Also, there are some things we need to discuss in person that you should know.
With love,
mom."
Samantha received the news with displeasure, but over time she understood that everyone is free to decide about their life and that she had to respect it, as nothing would change to please her wishes. So, swallowing her pride, she began the search for a dress for the occasion.
The ceremony went off without incident. Max and Sam were playing cards when Susan stealthily approached her eldest daughter and whispered the dreaded words:
"We need to talk."
Upon hearing her mother's prepared speech, Samantha burst into tears. She couldn't bear the idea of her mother taking Maxine away from her. Her sister was almost her best friend; separating them was an act of selfishness, wasn't it?
Samantha's reaction was intense. She screamed how great her hatred was for that family, capturing the attention of all those present and ruining part of the wedding. She insulted everyone for the last time and fled in search of a phone booth to call her father, who consoled her, equally affected, trying to convince her that it wouldn't be so bad, that they could keep in touch and visit occasionally.
After the incident, they decided to postpone the move for another year, until early 1984, due to the girl's immature behavior and the deterioration of her father's health, whose lung cancer was advancing inexorably. Months later, at the end of 1984, the girls' father died, unable to fight the cancer that rapidly consumed his weakened body, leaving a huge void in both, but especially in Samantha. She decided not to inform anyone, except her sister through a letter that would arrive a month later, which meant that Samantha lived alone during that time, surviving with difficulty.
The news devastated Maxine, who informed her mother. Susan, very worried, called Samantha repeatedly, not knowing that her daughter had escaped. She called all the authorities in California to find her daughter.
Samantha distanced herself from everything and everyone. She left behind friends and family, taking with her only a letter from Max, some clothes, and the little money she had left. Just the day before Christmas, guided by the offers at the bus stations and the address in Maxine's letter, Sam decided to go to Hawkins, Indiana. Her arrival on December 24, '84, was a Christmas gift for her distressed mother, who interrupted her prayers upon hearing the doorbell. Seeing the familiar face, Susan burst into tears, hugging her daughter tightly and shouting for joy. The commotion attracted everyone present, who ran to witness the emotional reunion between the two redheads and the brunette at the door.
═══════ .˚♡˚. ════════
Six months had passed since the death of their father, and five since her arrival in Hawkins.
Samantha had settled just in time for the start of the second academic term. Despite the widespread interest in befriending her, she only forged ties with a select and quite different group, as most did not pique her interest. Among her new friends was the one she liked best, Keith, the affable young man in charge of the game room, the Arcade, who offered her employment during the school year upon seeing her go there so often, forging a solid friendship based on common interests; two ruby-haired girls, Vicki and Nicole, with whom she shared lunch in the cafeteria and moments of hidden cigarettes under the staircase; and the charming Nancy Wheeler, who became a great ally during Sam's first days of adaptation. Obviously, in the best position was her little sister, Maxine, whom she sneaked into the Arcade and would give everything for. Despite all this, Danielle was quite flirtatious, so she liked to attract the attention of boys, flirt and play with their feelings when she went out at night with Vicki and Nicole. On the other hand, there were people that the brunette couldn't stand, the most notable being her stepbrother, Billy, and his close circle, except for the two redheads mentioned earlier. Exhausted by his arrogant attitude, the girl promised herself that one day she would punch that stupid face. The animosity was mutual. Even when Neil, her stepfather, forced Billy to take the sisters home and bring them from the institute, he occasionally "forgot" his duty, leaving them stranded there, returning on foot. To top it off, the intensity of their two characters caused constant altercations at home, always ending with Neil hitting and scolding Billy or yelling and blaming Susan for the behavior of his eldest daughter, which caused even worse behavior on the part of the eldest, who couldn't stand her mother, but after all, she was the one who had brought her into the world, so she didn't quite like the idea of someone raising their voice to her progenitor.

Preference is the Fruit of Love
So as Jikookers we all know one thing to be true! Jikook gravitate towards one another, often showing a very clear preference for each others company over others. This preference is made more obvious when members are around because it is in these moments that we see them form this almost exclusive impenetrable bubble around themselves creating an “Us” and “Them” environment.  While unintentional, it nevertheless happens.
One of the best examples of this the 2019 Boys with Luv Comeback Special filmed in NYC. Before I get into my opinions of this moment, I want you to watch the moment I am speaking about. It starts at 5:03 and ends at 7:01 (P.S. I chose this video because it clips out the parts I am talking about).
youtube
Now this moment starts off with Jikook being separated. Jk is seated with Jin and RM, while Jm is seated with Tae and Hobi. They don’t look unhappy separated they are laughing and goofing around, mostly JK poking fun of JM’s origin story.
Tumblr media
However, when teams are decided JK becomes incredibly happy. He’s super giddy to change teams. One can say it’s because he also is happy about being on a team with the entire Maknae line but the proof of why he’s really happy is what he does when switches sides. He walks over smiling at JM and then proceeds to tap JM’s shoulders with his paper.
Tumblr media
JK is happy to be on a team with JM. Which is funny seeing that JM is notorious for losing games, while JK is the Golden Maknae who enjoys winning. That aside...JK is happy to be on the same team as JM. And JM is clearly happy to be on the same team as JK seeing as his whole body language shifts and his attention turns away from Tae and the rest of the group to 100% JK. Not 50% or 80%...100%.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jikook spend the entire game in their own little bubble, sadly leaving Tae out the entire time. They don’t consult him about answers, they spend the game whispering to each other and acting as though the team is just them! I mean look at  the distance they’ve created between themselves and Tae, and look at Tae’s expression. He looks bored and not happy because he’s being left out. Even the editors noted it with the “Guys, please play with V.” I genuinely don’t think Tae likes being paired with Jikook for games because this happens. You put them together they enter their own world. I am almost certain Jimin said as much on a live once. He said something along the lines of “I would call JK but when we are together we become laser focused and forget to communicate with Army.” And we see that very statement come to life all the times when they are together.
Tumblr media
Above is another example of them forgetting others exist. You might think they are alone but spot the broad shoulders peaking from behind Jimin and you’ll find RM. The entire time he’s paired with them it’s like he doesn’t exist.
Or...what about the time they invited Hobi to join them to practice Busan Dialect with them and then forgot they invited him. Or the time they were live as a group and Tae had to separate them.
Tumblr media
This is a habit they have that is not exclusive to one member. i do think it bothers Tae and Rm the most but still they do it to all members. The Boys with Love Comeback Special shows it the best to me though...because from the get go JK showed how happy he was to be sitting with JM and JM alone, and JM showed his happiness by closing any and all distance between them. Also sadly, Tae’s displeasure makes it very obvious.
I’ve honestly never seen two people so naturally create a sort of force field around them the way Jikook do. If you let them get in their zone it’s hard to break them out of it, and from what I gather members rarely try to. They just let them do their thing. In all the behind the scenes moments, rehearsal moments what do we see? We see Jikook goofing off while members don’t bother/willfully ignore them. They don’t ask many questions, they do occasionally give them a death glare (tried to find a clearer shot but trust me Hobi is glaring hard at them) but mostly they leave them be because it becomes more awkward when you break them up.

Alabamians woke up Sunday with the right to carry a gun without a license.
The change, implemented by a state law passed last year, marked a major milestone: half of America’s 50 states now allow people to carry handguns without first seeking a permit.
Thirteen years ago, only two states — Vermont and Alaska — allowed its residents the unfettered right to carry a gun, relying on the Constitution’s Second Amendment as a blanket permit for all.
Since 2010, however, nearly two dozen states have followed suit, with 11 of them passing permitless carry laws in the last three years alone.
The growing movement has chalked up wins in state legislatures with remarkable speed, drawing cheers from gun rights advocates while raising fears among reformers that the changes will lead to more guns in the street — and likely more violence.
“If you are a law-abiding citizen, you should fully be able to exercise all of your constitutional rights,” said Andi Turner, legislative director for the Texas Rifle Association. “Half the states of the union are now recognizing it.”
Permit systems generally require applicants to demonstrate safe gun handling, as well as show knowledge of often-complicated gun laws and the use of lethal force.
“We’ve seen in the past decade a very concerted effort by the corporate gun lobby, especially the NRA,” said Nick Wilson, a gun violence researcher at the Center for American Progress. It has been a very successful campaign for the gun lobby. It helps their bottom line… But it’s very concerning to anyone worried about public safety.
The state legal changes have dovetailed with two other trends that auger well for gun advocates. First, the COVID-19 pandemic unleashed an unprecedented surge in sales. And second, people of color and women made up a larger share of the buyers, diversifying a gun-buying public that has traditionally skewed male, white and conservative.
Gun violence has also spiked since the pandemic began, with firearm deaths jumping 20% from 2019 to 2021, according to a recent study published by JAMA Network Open.
With big-ticket gun reforms like the Assault Weapons Ban or universal background checks stalled in Congress, the spate of state laws marks a defeat for the reform movement, which views the trend as a public security threat.
Sociological studies tend to show that increases in gun ownership generally track with increases in violence.
“It’s no coincidence that in states with very permissive approaches to guns in public, you have higher rates of gun death,” said Adam Skaggs, chief counsel for the Giffords Law Center, a nonpartisan reform group.
Over the last five years, researchers have increasingly shown that loosening restrictions on carrying handguns is also associated with problems like increased gun theft and road rage incidents, according to Stanford Law professor John Donohue.
Letting more people carry guns also impedes police work, Donohue said – partly from upticks in their caseloads of gun thefts and accidental shootings and partly because ramping up the risk of getting shot reduces police efficiency.
“One of the unintended consequences of putting more guns on the street is degrading police performance,” Donohue said. “You see clearance rates for all crimes drop when states move in the direction of letting more people carry guns.”
Tallying the number of states with permitless carry laws can exaggerate their reach, Skaggs noted. They tend to be small states with rural populations, while larger, more urban states like California and New York tend to favor a more restrictive approach toward firearms.
Just over one-third of Americans live in the 25 states embracing permitless carry.
And in the same way that gun rights groups have made speedy progress with permitless carry laws in red states, liberal-dominated legislatures have pushed opposing measures.
New York tightened its gun restrictions after last year’s mass shooting in Buffalo. Delaware enacted a state-level Assault Weapons Ban last year. A ballot measure passed last year by Oregon voters requires a permit for all gun purchases and restricts magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, though the law is tied up in the courts.
But the conservative-stacked Supreme Court’s landmark decision in the New York State Rifle and Pistol Co. v. Bruen case last year has also made it harder for state legislatures to keep people from carrying handguns. The ruling struck down a New York law that required applicants for concealed handgun licenses to demonstrate a specific need for carrying a weapon.
The ruling stopped short of scrapping permits for carrying handguns altogether, however.
“The opinion made very clear that there’s nothing in the Constitution that requires permitless carry,” Skaggs said. “Constitutional carry may sound good with its alliteration and the way it rolls off the tongue, but it’s fundamentally untrue and misleading. Guns in public have always been significantly regulated.”
Still, the Bruen decision could have major impacts on state-level gun debates, according to Mark Oliva, spokesman for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the firearm industry trade group.
“Left-leaning and right-leaning states will probably become more polarized,” Oliva said. “And you’re going to keep seeing them go to the courts and say, ‘what’s the truth here?’ And if the truth follows what came out of Bruen, they’re going to find assault weapons bans are unconstitutional, magazine restrictions are unconstitutional, age restrictions and background checks for ammunition purchases are unconstitutional.”
States with permitless carry could become the majority before the year’s end.
Virginia Delegate Marie March (R) pre-filed a constitutional carry bill in November for this year’s legislative session. However, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants the issue prioritized when Florida lawmakers reconvene in April.
In Nebraska, a permitless carry bill failed to break the threshold for overcoming a filibuster in the state Senate last year by two votes. Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) plans to try again this year.

Lost Souls chapter 8
Tumblr media
If you missed the beginning
Chapter 7 on AO3
SUMMARY CHAPTER 8
We're back in the present. Jake hasn't forgotten the night he spent with Mina, but she seems determined to keep their relationship platonic. Sasha and Ari are already making bets about Jake and Mina, while Jake doesn't know how to behave with Tess. Notes: I just want to say that to those who don't like Tess very much because of what she did at the end of Sweetbitter season 2 not to worry: as I'm telling the story from Jake's point of view, who still knows nothing about what she did, I'm still cuddling her... But I promise that when the day of revelation comes, she'll get her due!

New York, February 2019
Despite a rocky start, Mina quickly proved to be a competent and efficient partner for Jake. As they navigated the lunch shift together, he couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at her unfamiliarity with some basic aspects of bartending. Her lack of knowledge about cocktails in particular surprised him, considering her years of experience in a high-end Los Angeles restaurant.
Their shift coming to an end, they went out to smoke a cigarette. Jake chose this moment to  voice his concerns but she responded defensively, claiming that in L.A., her role had been more specialized and she hadn't been required to work behind the bar often. Her irritation was palpable as she brushed off his questions.
Jake let out a chuckle, breaking the tension. "No need to get so defensive. Howard was probably desperate to find a replacement for Nicky, or..."
"Or what?" Mina prompted.
"Or he had some ulterior motive when hiring you," Jake mused.
Taking a step closer, he couldn't help but be drawn to the curve of Mina's neck. Leaning in, he whispered near her ear, his voice low and playful, "Not that I blame him..."
Mina shot him an irritated look, her cheeks tinged with a blush, and her breath slightly hitched. "I'm sure he did a background check before hiring me back. Now back off, playboy. Your girlfriend's watching," she retorted, nodding towards Tess, who was indeed keeping an eye on them from a nearby table she was cleaning.
Jake let out a sigh, his playful demeanor fading. He wanted to respond with something witty, but Tess's gaze held a mixture of pain and unrealistic hope that gave him a pang of guilt. He had hoped that Tess might have been too high the night before to remember the confession of love she had made. He could choose to pretend that he hadn't heard anything, but that might not help if Tess decided to bring up the subject again.
"And the other woman, the one who didn't bother to say hello but instead quizzed me about wines during the... What do you call it? "Family lunch"?" Mina inquired.
"Family lunch, yep, we've got family dinner too. That would be Simone. She loves terrorizing newcomers, asking them wine-related questions," Jake explained with a touch of amusement.
"Oh, I thought she was probably that Simone," Mina replied, casting a curious glance at Jake. He suddenly realized he had mentioned Simone to her before, multiple times even. Anxiety crept in as he couldn't recall everything he might have said.
Mina continued, her tone sly, "She kept giving me those death stares when she came to the bar later. Quite the welcoming party. Did you spill the beans to her already? I could practically feel the jealousy radiating off her."
Jake frowned, taken aback by Mina's assumption. His response carried a casual tone, though he was slightly unsettled. "Nah, you've got it all wrong. Simone couldn't care less about who I fuck. Our relationship is... different. And no, I haven't told her anything about you."
"But she knows something happened, right? You two seem pretty close, the type that shares everything," Mina probed, displaying an unexpected astuteness that caught Jake off guard. Not ready to delve into the topic just yet, he subtly gestured toward the wedding ring adorning Mina's left hand.
"I see the ring's still on… Is your husband coming to New York?" He inquired.
Mina, taken aback, fiddled nervously with her wedding ring, sliding it up and down her finger as she responded with evident anxiety, "Johnny, in New York? Good Lord, no. He has never left California, probably never will! I needed time far away from him, and I think he felt the same way about me. Hopefully, we can figure it out! We probably just need time."
Jake suspected that she was trying to convince herself that her marriage was not over yet, but he didn't feel that it was his place to tell her otherwise. Even if he had wanted to say something, he wouldn't have had the opportunity because Sasha, a Russian server with a distinctive accent, burst onto the scene, his voice loud and slightly high-pitched, and interrupted their conversation to complain about Howard. Throughout the shift, Sasha had been somewhat rude to Mina; Jake assumed it was likely due to the stress of the job.
Others had also shown a mixture of curiosity and skepticism toward Mina as she stepped into Nicky's former role. Mina was still unaware that they were mourning Nicky's absence due to his wife's illness. Only Heather and Tess had welcomed her, with Heather being a mutual connection through a friend who had tipped Mina off about the job opportunity.
Sasha's interruption continued as he exclaimed, "Awwww! Pussy Cat and Baby Jakey! Taking a little break together, huh? Did I catch you two in the act?" He grinned suggestively at them before lighting his own cigarette. Jake rolled his eyes at Sasha's teasing, refusing to take the bait. Mina, on the other hand, simply shrugged and responded with a mix of annoyance and curiosity, "We were just smoking. And what did you call me?"
"You got a problem with Pussy Cat? Prefer Big Whore? What's your preference?" Sasha shot back.
Mina grumbled, "I don't know, do I look big to you? You could just call me Mina, that's my actual name, but whatever."
Sasha didn't seem to take a hint as he continued his teasing, "So, when's the big event happening? Need to know so I can win my bet against Ari. I could use some new shoes, but I have no money!"
Jake groaned, a mix of annoyance and amusement. The topic of his romantic life had been a favorite subject of speculation among his coworkers for years. He retorted, "Screw off, Sasha," though his tone held more exasperation than actual irritation. They were all behaving like children, he thought.
Mina's response jolted him, making him feel like he had stepped on a landmine. "Been there done that already! You won your bet, go tell her!" she declared, her face deadpan and seemingly unfazed.
Both Sasha and Jake stared at her, their expressions a mix of surprise and disbelief. Jake, in particular, felt his heart skip a beat. He wasn't prepared for the world to learn about him and Mina like this, especially from Sasha, of all people.
Sasha couldn't contain his excitement. "Really? That was fast!" he exclaimed, his eyes gleaming with mischief.
"Yeah, you know, just a quickie in the locker this morning! Jake is just that irresistible," Mina retorted, a playful tone in her voice.
Jake immediately realized that Mina was joking, and his tense shoulders relaxed. He decided to play along, trying to mask the relief in his voice. "Why the surprise, Sasha? That's me!"
Sasha squinted at them suspiciously, sensing their exchange of complicit looks. "You guys are messing with me!" he accused, his tone a mixture of amusement and annoyance.
Mina giggled while Jake playfully blew a puff of smoke in Sasha's direction. Sasha responded by blowing a playful kiss back at Jake.
Sasha then offered Mina a piece of advice, "I should probably warn you not to get involved with this slut. He's dating Tess, and Tess is my friend. But honestly, I don’t care."
Mina stubbed out her cigarette in the ashtray, moving closer to Sasha with a mischievous smile. "What a caring friend you are! But don't worry, even if it were your concern, you'd have nothing to worry about," she replied, her gray eyes fixed on Jake, a hint of challenge in her gaze. "I don't sleep with coworkers."
We'll see about that, Jake thought, while keeping a straight face.
Mina then walked back into the restaurant with a confident stride. Jake's attention was momentarily drawn to her graceful movements before he realized Sasha was still looking at him.
"You're not planning to let this go, are you, Baby Jakey?" Sasha asked with a sly grin.
Jake sighed. "Does Tess know about your bet?" he asked Sasha, his concern evident.
"Nah, we're not assholes! But she knows who you are. We all do!" Sasha replied.
"Yeah, everyone thinks they've got me all figured out," Jake muttered under his breath. But the truth was, nobody really understood him.
As he finished his cigarette, he flicked the butt into the ashtray and headed back inside the restaurant. Upon entering, he spotted Howard conversing with Mina in the dining room. Jake could feel Howard's eyes on him, assessing the situation. When he walked by his boss, Howard didn't say a word to him.
Jake wasn't just joking about the possibility that Howard might have ulterior motives for hiring Mina. He had once viewed Howard as a tightly-wound, overly serious man and a hopeless romantic mourning his wife's death for years. However, the revelation of Howard's affair with Becky, the previous manager, had cast a different light on his boss.
The way Howard had treated Becky was repulsive. After seducing her, he had orchestrated her transfer to the Smokehouse, a barbecue restaurant with TVs plastered on its walls. For Becky, it had felt like a downgrade even though the wages were rumored to be better there compared to what they offered at the 22W. Still infatuated with Howard, she had continued seeing him until it was painfully apparent that he was using her. At least, this was what the grapevine said; not much was heard from Becky after her departure from 22W. There were whispers that she had recently left the Smokehouse as well, but Jake wasn't invested enough in her personal drama to keep up with the latest gossip. He had never been particularly close to Becky, despite having shared some heated moments with her a few years back. Their interactions had been more physical than verbal. After a few weeks of casual encounters, she had ended it with him, citing a "serious" relationship with a guy she had refused to name. When Jake had later learned about her affair with Howard, he had wondered if Howard was the same guy she had dumped him for. The timelines seemed to align.
Not wanting to appear nosy, Jake decided to head to the locker room. Inside, he found Heather and Tess preparing for a shopping trip with Ari waiting for them outside.
"Hey, handsome!"
Tess called out to him, her arms encircling his neck as she placed a tender kiss on his lips. Seeing the affection in her eyes, Jake felt both touched and uneasy. Gently pushing her away while he loosened his tie, he responded,
"Hey, princess. What's going on?"
Tess sounded casual, but there was a hint of fading happiness in her smile, as if she had sensed his hesitation.
"How's the new girl doing?" Tess asked, keeping up the pretense. Her smile was fading, a mix of curiosity and worry flickering in her eyes.
"Fine, I guess," Jake replied, maintaining the facade. "You can ask her yourself when you see her. She's still talking with Howard."
"Really? What are they talking about?"
Jake detected a slight flinch in Tess's eyes, but she quickly brushed it off, murmuring that she was just curious. He wondered if Tess was worried that Mina might outshine her as a server. She had mentioned previously that she was hoping for a promotion from Howard.
Offering his professional analysis, Jake quipped, "If you want my expert opinion, she's about as good at bartending as you were at waiting tables when you started." This made Heather laugh, who chimed in,
"Oh, she's that bad?"
"Hey!" Tess playfully protested before joining in the laughter.
"Honey, nobody thought you'd last a week," Heather confessed.
"I didn't even think I'd last two days," Tess admitted with a grin.
Jake found himself reminiscing aloud,
"I remember the first time I saw you. You surprised me."
Why did I say that? Jake immediately questioned himself. It had just slipped out, but now he was second-guessing his choice of words. He remembered Tess's arrival vividly. At the time, he hadn't thought much of her, aside from noticing that she seemed as innocent and vulnerable as a deer caught in headlights. She didn't seem to fit into the atmosphere of the restaurant. Yet, he couldn't deny finding her cute. He had seen the way she looked at him, a mix of curiosity and attraction, and he had known that winning her over wouldn't require much effort on his part.
Tess responded with a soft smile, gazing at him fondly as he changed into a black shirt. "I remember you too." The memory brought a smile to her lips.
"You liked that oyster, didn’t you?" Jake teased. Tess had once shared that while tasting the oyster he had offered her, she had wondered if his kisses would be as salty.
As their playful banter continued, Ari's impatience finally interrupted them. Her head popped into the locker room, her voice laced with annoyance.
"Are you done? Where's Sasha?"
Ari's attention then shifted to the entrance of the room, and she adopted a sultry tone. "Oh, hello there, new person!"
All eyes turned toward Mina, who made quite the entrance, her embarrassment evident. With a soft-spoken "Hey!" she slipped into the room, throwing Jake a fleeting glance before heading to her locker. Unaware of Ari's appreciative look as she scrutinized her from head to toe, Mina's focus was elsewhere. Jake couldn't help but smirk at the situation. He had a hunch that Ari might soon make her move on Mina – a pattern she had followed with other newcomers, those who were backwaters like her at least. Ari liked to regularly remind her friends about not dating coworkers who had a different position in the hierarchy.
Frankly, Jake found that logic hard to grasp. Among his friends, like Tess and Simone, the distinction between being a server and a backwater was a big deal. It wasn't just about the better pay at month's end; they believed it gave them a certain status. Simone believed that  her extensive wine knowledge and her 15 years at the restaurant made her indispensable. Jake thought it was a naive error in judgment. No one was truly irreplaceable, especially in a place like 22W. Customers and the director saw no real difference among servers, bartenders, and backwaters – all were just serving staff to them.
Heather extended an invitation to Mina, inviting her to join her, Tess, Ari, and possibly Sasha for a shopping trip. Caught off guard, Mina glanced hesitantly at Tess and Ari, both awaiting her response. Ari seemed enthusiastic, likely sensing a chance to uncover more about Mina's sexuality. For what felt like an eternity, Jake held his breath, fearing Mina might accept. It was clear that she had no intention of revealing their intimate connection established just a week ago at the Omega Lounge. But Ari had a knack for reading situations. If she sensed their secret, Jake was certain she'd spill the beans to Tess, driven by her bet with Sasha and Scott that Jake and Tess would break up within a month.
Finally, Jake suppressed a sigh of relief as Mina diplomatically replied, "Sounds nice! But I promised Keisha I'd babysit Zahra so she could hit the hair salon. Can you believe she hasn't had time to cut her hair since the baby was born?"
"Oh, poor thing! That's exactly why I'm in no rush to have kids. They're amazing, but say goodbye to your free time," Tess chimed in.
Mina nodded and bid them a pleasant shopping trip before Ari declared she wasn't waiting around for Sasha any longer. Mina's smile seemed sincere, yet Jake couldn't quite gauge if she was truly disappointed to miss out on the outing. He wondered about her typical social dynamics at work – was she more of a loner like him? She felt different from the Mina he met at the Omega Lounge a week ago, appearing more reserved, even cautious.
As Tess left the locker room with Heather and Ari, Jake and Mina were finally alone. Lost in his thoughts, he watched her as she undressed. With her back turned, he caught a glimpse of her cherry tree tattoo running down her spine and felt a sting of desire.
"I know you're ogling, you perv," Mina playfully called out, still facing away from him.
"Not my fault the men and the women’s lockers aren’t separated," he retorted in the same teasing tone. Shrugging into his leather jacket, he added, "Besides, I saw you sneaking a peek while I was still sans pants. You naughty girl."
Mina giggled, slipped into a white tank top and black jeans, and quipped with a grin, "What can I say? You were just in the way!"
As she untied her hair, Jake's desire surged, ignited by the tantalizing perfume that wafted from her. The room was empty, everyone else seemed to have left – so what was holding him back? Closing the distance between them, he took a few steps towards her, observing her reactions intently. She maintained an artful pretense of not noticing, retrieving a gray pullover from her locker. When he gently brushed her hair aside to gain access, she momentarily froze. The absence of protest encouraged him, and as he let a finger trail down her alluring neck, he detected the telltale quickening of her breath. The attraction was mutual, he knew it. His lips hovered tantalizingly close to her neck...
"Don't."
The single word, delivered with a cold and resolute tone, landed on him like a bucket of ice. He immediately stepped back, though he inquired, "Why?"
"Earlier, I was serious. I don't date coworkers. Especially not you," Mina retorted sharply. "I have enough problems of my own; I don't need to deal with yours."
"Understandable," Jake conceded reluctantly. "But who said anything about dating?"
He craved physical contact. Feeling a surge of boldness, he slipped his hand under her tank top, grazing the velvety skin of her back. He knew he'd found a sensitive spot when she shivered beneath his touch. She eluded his grasp quickly, pulling on her pullover. Gazing into his eyes with an unwavering resolve, she issued a clear statement, "No dating, no sexing. Just work."
Jake's jaw clenched, and though he yearned to assert that he didn't care – a blatant falsehood – he was interrupted by the abrupt intrusion of Sasha, his demeanor sour.
"Is it just you in here?! Where are the other bitches?" Sasha blurted out angrily.
"They left already. Where were you, anyway?" Jake responded, equally irritated by the Russian's untimely intrusion.
"I was on the phone, damn it! I swear, Baby Jakey, they're going to pay for this!" Sasha raged.
"Baby Jakey…" Mina echoed, thoroughly amused.
"That's my nickname for him; no one else can use it! Still need to come up with a new name for you," Sasha quipped.
"Anything but PussyCat works for me…" Mina countered. While Jake stewed in his grumpiness, Mina seemed to relish Sasha's entrance, effectively breaking the thick tension that hung in the air. She mentioned she was running late, exchanged a quick farewell, and hurried out of the locker room.
Sasha's giggles rang out as he taunted Jake, "Oops, let me guess – you were about to fuck, and I ruined it?"
Jake managed a wry chuckle and retorted, "You're the one in this room who needs to get laid, Sasha."
"Oh Baby Jakey, sweetie, that's sweet but you know we're incompatible!"
Jake slipped behind Sasha and replied with a teasing voice, "Your loss… Anyway, I've got to run. I promised Chris and my goddaughter I'd meet them after my shift."
Without a parting word, he exited the locker room, ignoring Sasha's playful complaints, "Yeah, sure, just abandon me here, like the others!"

my ideas on "Anomaly Found - Chase Brody" and the jse egoverse
ok so it's time for me to gather my thoughts regarding The Iris Project and everything that has just happened. unfortunately i couldn't participate in the livestream cause i was in class, but i have just watched "Anomaly Found - Chase Brody" and i feel like i have a decent idea of what has happened so far.
obviously, this contains spoilers for "Anomaly Found" as well as other videos already published by Seán!
before we start, we have to go back to two important videos: "Chase" (released october 13, 2019) and "You're Not Ready For These Scary Games" (released october 19, 2019, which i'll be reffering to as "You're Not Ready" from now on). "Chase" was so incredible when it came out, and the thumbnail for "You're Not Ready" is literally Henrik's face, so i couldn't be more hyped.
in "Chase", we begin with a note of eviction. the note states that anyone living in the house (namely, Chase) is ordered to "vacate the premises not later than September 2019". according to the notice, it's August 8, 2019. things are definitely not going ok, judging by the state of his car and the bottle of whisky inside the glove compartment. more importantly, his reaction to seeing the picture he just found shows us something terrible has happened. he drives to the woods and walks for a while (with many beautiful shots from the mountains and the forest itself). more importantly, he walks towards a very specific set of rocks, mounted on top of eachother like a memorial of some kind. he rests the photo over it and drinks from the bottle of whisky, before being abruptly teleported from the woods to what seems like a parking lot.
on the other hand, the part that makes "You're Not Ready" interesting is the ending of the video, where Seán's screen is abruptly cut by static followed by a black screen. Henrik immediately appears, worried and writing on a piece of paper in front of a computer screen. we can see he's been woking on mathematical equations, by the papers on his desk; all the ones we can see have the letter 'T' in some capacity. after many mistakes, something in the screen fires up and it glitches. Henrik seems desperate and, after typing something, is presented with a psychedelic tunnel of lights; something seems to have worked.
with this, we can analyze "Anomaly Found" with a little more info. we're told throughout the scenes that Chase's family has been murdered (both his wife and kid, according to Arin's character as well as the photo in "Chase") and he has been somehow involved. at first, he says he's killed them, but then retorts a "i didn't kill them". after the ending, it seems pretty clear that the one responsible for their death was Anti - but Chase took the blame, since no one would believe him if he told the truth. this event is obviously the catalist to all the bad things happening with him, from the eviction note to the heavy drinking.
during one of the scenes in the "Project Iris" livestream, we're presented with a poster saying that "ALTR 5914 IS A TIME THIEF!". since we're already aware that Anti's number is ALTR 114209 because that's how his name is written in numbers (A = 1, N = 14, T = 20, I = 9), 5914's translation is either EIAD or EIN. EIN as in Henrik von Schneeplestein. Henrik is a "time thief" - or, more likely, a time manipulator.
in "You're Not Ready", he seems to be working with time equations (remember the 'T'?), or something along the lines of manipulating time using both math and some weird machine. he seems to be a physicist more than a physician - and that's why i think Henrik is responsible for Chase's teleportation. meddling with time is, essencially, meddling with space, since they're both indissociable. if Henrik's machine did work at the end of "You're Not Ready", he has successfully changed time - or stolen it, in some capacity. the success of Henrik's machine is responsible for Chase's teleporting and, consequently, for his inprisonment in the IRIS facility during "Anomaly Found".
now, on to the best part of this whole ordeal: my baby Anti. he looks great, he looks terrifying, but more importantly: he looks exactly like Chase. if anyone saw him commiting any crime, they would obviously blame it on Chase, since it's "impossible" for such a creature to exist. Anti seems to be making a hell out of Chase's life long before the murder of his wife and kid - "showing him awful things", making him hear strange voices and whatnot. we were already aware of Anti's interest in Chase - my question is: why? why Chase? why is Chase so important to Anti?
i am also very intrigued in the whole "i feel like i've been here before" bit, as well as "i have been in this exact place before, we need to leave". this implies some sort of time cognizance from Chase's part, almost as if he's able to glimpse into the future. that could be either the reason for Anti's interest in him or an effect of his influence. either way, Chase has something special to him - and we don't know what yet.
finally, i wanna take this last paragraph to say how incredibly proud i am of seán for making this. the "Project Iris" livestream as a whole was incredible, an amazing feat that definitely will change the way we think youtube content and viewer interactions for the next years. the cinematography of "Anomaly Found" is also phenomenal, and don't even get me started on that ending scene - I NEED MORE ANTI, SEÁN!!!! WE NEED MORE ANTI CONTENT!!!!!
if anyone has anything to add, feel free to comment/rb with it. let's go JSE stans, we're finally being fed!!!!

OC name meanings tag!
Stealing from @albatris :3
Rules: Search and post the meaning of your OCs’ names (if you made their name up or they go by a nickname, post an explanation of how it came to you)! Bonus if you can find something for their last name too
Emerald "Emmy" Acero:
"So, uh. Don't think I ever got the chance to give you my name. It's Emerald—" "—Like the gemstone?" "-Yeah like the gemstone. You can just call me Emmy though. Everyone else does."
Emmy's first name is pretty self-explanatory. His last name, Acero, is Spanish for Steel. His father, Orion Acero, picked it out when transitioning as a way to distance himself from his dead identity and any ties to Emmy's other father (whom has no idea he even is a father). Therefore, once Emmy was born, it became his last name as well. The only thing Emmy has even been told about his other biological parent was that he is a 'deadbeat musician' and that Orion didn't want Emmy to end up going down the same path.
OOC, Emerald was an import of my D&D rogue, Immeral (Immi), when I was invited to my first VtM game and had trouble coming up with a character thanks to Long Covid brainfog. What started as a modern clone of an existing character ended up evolving into his own being and is hardly recognizable from his D&D origins. The most notably being Emmy is an absolute heart of gold, dumb of ass. And Immi is a Lawful Evil dumpster fire. Which brings us to...
Immeral Ethanasath:
The character that would become one of my most replayed and AU'd to death (quite literally in most of his games) was a last minute randomly generated lawful evil rogue as a loyal subordinate for my buddy CerberusKnight's Conquest Paladin, Ajexs. Everything from his appearance to his subclass was randomly assigned in a scramble to have the character ready for a D&D one-shot. I had so much fun playing him I put him in a longform campaign to determine his origin story. Then COVID absolutely bodied me in mid 2020 and left me with less than stellar focus or creative function. I stopped playing spellcasters altogether because I couldn't keep up with the complexity and found it hard to create even new martial classes that didnt feel like cardboard cutouts. So I played Immi again. And again.
As for how he got his nickname, English is not CerberusKnight's first language and he had a lot of trouble pronouncing Immeral, often adding a 'd' to the end and accidentally calling him 'Immerald'. So we made it canon that Immeral loves nicknames because Common is also not his first language, so he told the paladin Ajexs that he could just call him 'Immi' as long as Ajexs let him call him 'A.J.' in return.
So of course, you can see where once I imported him to a 'human' setting, 'Immeral' naturally became 'Emerald'. I've only just recently gotten into a place of recovery where I can create new characters again, but I've been playing iterations of this disaster since 2019 and he holds a special place in my heart.
And as far as I know, the name means absolutely nothing and in canon, Immi picked it out himself when he hit a century old, aka elf adulthood.
Javier Andres Peña:
Emmy remembers the little message he found once he was awake again. Scrawled on a sticky note and left stuck to his cracked phone screen: Don’t walk home by yourself anymore, okay? —Javier
Javier, the Spanish derivative of Xavier, means 'new house'. Andres is a derivative of Andrew, meaning 'manly' or 'warrior' (hilarious, considering this man is the walking personification of toxic masculinity). Peña originates from 'de la Peña' or 'by the cliffside' or 'by the rocks'
I can't take the credit for this one. Javier started as a backstory character for Emerald (the one responsibly for Emmy's turning, specifically) created by that game's Storyteller. However, the original version of that game flopped horribly and I left it after being treated quite poorly by the storyteller and one of their players. Myself and two other folks from the game liked our character interactions so much we decided to split off and keep running the game, set in a new city. And of course, Emerald ended up reaching out to his renegade ex to escape one court and arrive safely half a country away.
Javier's role ended up being upgraded from a backstory character to a proper NPC by @zeeseal, but while sorting out Javier and Emerald's history, Javier ended up becoming our shared brainchild. Our beautiful disaster son. And of course, Emmy endearingly refers to him as 'Javi'.
I finally got a chance to play Javier as a true PC when I was invited to a game set in 1982 Melbourne Australia, as Javier's backstory included being turned in the 1980s and it seemed fun to explore what he was like before he became jaded with his new lot in unlife as an eternal 20something. I often poke @zeeseal for her input on how our terrible terrible son would react to certain things for the first time and the game has been a blast so far. Especially being American and playing an American character stuck with no home and no money in Australia with other Australian players/PCs and Storyteller.
As for tags, I'm sniping @bludoods, @whispering-jabberwocky @mayaminamoto, @sayonaramidnight, @raceofhearts and @ichithecupcake.
(And anyone else who wants to do it)

Zachary Cordell Harrison, California inmate BK8726, born 1990, incarceration intake in 2019 at age 29; sentenced to life
Homicide
Zachary Harrison, the man convicted of murdering an Alderpoint resident in Southern Humboldt County and fleeing authorities for nine months afterward, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Harrison, 29, will serve 50 years before receiving the opportunity for parole. His sentence was doubled from the standard 25-to-life because he used a firearm to carry out the killing of 58-year-old Robert Holtslclaw on Sept. 23, 2017.
Judge Kaleb Cockrum denied a motion by the defense to remove the additional 25 years. Cockrum alluded to Harrison’s familial history, acknowledging that the Alderpoint resident was abused as a child by both his biological mother and brother, but said it would be “inappropriate” to discount Harrison’s use of a firearm in the killing.
“But for the use of a rifle, it would have been very difficult to carry out a murder in this case,” Cockrum said, noting that Harrison fired from distance when he shot and killed Holtsclaw.
If Harrison is ever granted parole, he will serve it over a 10-year probationary period.
Harrison wore an orange jumpsuit to court, standing in silence with his head raised high. He wore handcuffs and a heavy cast over one of his hands. Cockrum said in court that Harrison had sustained the injury during a recent fight at the Humboldt County jail.
In arguing for a 50-year minimum sentence, Deputy District Attorney Adrian Kamada said Harrison has displayed no remorse and has never provided a reason for killing Holtsclaw.
It remains unclear whether Harrison was even looking to kill Holtsclaw specifically, since eyewitness Tory Hennings, a friend of Harrison’s, testified in court to seeing Harrison aim the rifle at him moments before firing.
Over the next nine months, Harrison would evade authorities, swapping license plates and slipping away from a near-arrest. His eventual capture near the Bayshore Mall in Eureka.
During trial, Harrison’s defense had argued that eyewitness Tory Hennings could have framed Harrison for murder. Investigators had found no forensic evidence tying Harrison to the murder, but did recover 30-30 copper rifle bullets from Harrison’s trailer — the same ammunition fired to kill Holtsclaw.
The bullets, along with Hennings’ testimony and images of Harrison’s car leaving the site of Holtsclaw’s death, were enough to secure a conviction.
Jury foreperson Dean Troutte later told local media that he and other jurors were confident in their decision.
“As long as he’s not back on the streets, even if he’s an old man… I’m safe with life imprisonment,” Troutte said last month.

Time and Chase
Pairing: Five Hargreeves x Fem! OC
Author's Note: Hello and welcome. This is a major throwback but we are kicking off my TUA series of fics all the way from season one so that this story actually makes sense. Or about as much sense as it can be. I will be posting daily. *Please note that I am well aware that Elliot Page portrays Viktor, but due to season one being before his transition, that is why his character is still Vanya. I am not deadnaming him and I sincerely hope I don't come across as such. I will transition when I write season three.*
Warnings: Long post, mentions of Reginald's death, blood, violence (looking at you Diego and Luther), and cursing.

We Only See Each Other At Weddings And Funerals
~ * ~
On the first day of October, 1989, forty-three women around the world simultaneously gave birth. None of the women showed any prior signs of pregnancy. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and playboy adventurer, made it his personal mission to find and adopt as many of these children as possible.
He got seven of them.
~ * ~
March 24th, 2019
A bright blue light flashed outside the window, causing all the Hargreeves to abruptly pause their dance party. Crashes and the sound of shattering windows occurred from the crazy winds.
Luther, Diego, Allison, and Vanya Hargreeves all rushed outside into the courtyard to see what exactly was going on. A bright, blue orb was forming in the darkening, swirling clouds in the sky.
"What is it?" Vanya yelled above the howling wind.
"Don't get too close!" Allison warned.
"Yeah, no shit," Diego shot.
"Looks like some sort of temporal anomaly. Either that or a miniature black hole. One of the two!" Luther tried to make sense.
"Pretty big difference there, Paul Bunyan," Diego remarked.
Suddenly, Klaus Hargreeves came scurrying out of the house with a fire extinguisher in his grasp. "Out of the way!"
"What are you…?" Luther trailed off.
Klaus chucked the fire extinguisher at the portal with all his might and the portal just swallowed it.
"What is that gonna do?" Allison cried.
"I don't know. Do you have a better idea?"
The portal began to crackle as two figures seemed to be forming.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Everyone get behind me!" Luther instructed with authority, pushing his siblings behind him.
"Yeah, get behind us," Diego spoke up with a hint of jealousy.
"I vote for running! Come on!" Klaus exclaimed.
More electricity crackled as the two people fell out of the portal and screamed when they landed. The thunder faded, along with the clouds and the blue portal. The siblings slowly crept over as their long-lost brother, Five Hargreeves, along with a young blonde girl groaned and stumbled to their feet.
"Does anyone else see little Number Five and a random teenage girl, or is that just me?" Klaus questioned.
Five and the girl looked at one another, seeing that they were back in their thirteen year old bodies.
"Shit!" they both exclaimed in disbelief.
Five led the girl off, leaving their rather speechless siblings to process the fact that their brother returned. More or less brought a girl with him.
They fumbled after the two as Five blinked himself and the girl into the basement kitchen. The rest of his family piled onto the other side of the table. Rather hungry, Five began making some peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches.
"What's the date?" Five questioned.
"The exact date," the girl added.
Vanya frowned. "The 24th."
"Of what?" Five prodded her onwards.
"March."
"Good."
"So, are we gonna talk about what just happened?" Luther wanted to know.
Five ignored him, still fixing his sandwich. The girl was sitting next to him, awkwardly watching him and his siblings. The others exchanged a glance, wondering who she was.
"It's been 17 years," Luther stood up.
Five scoffed. "It's been a lot longer than that." He blinked around the male to grab some peanut butter and marshmallows.
"I haven't missed that," Luther sighed as Five blinked back to the table where his sandwich awaited.
"Where'd you go?" Diego asked.
"The future. It's shit, by the way," Five replied.
"Called it!" Klaus piped up.
"I should've listened to the old man. You know, jumping through space is one thing, jumping through time is a toss of the dice," Five rambled, looking at his family.
"Nice dress," the girl complimented Klaus almost shyly.
"Oh, well, danke!" Klaus beamed.
"Wait, how did you get back?" Vanya inquired.
"In the end, I had to project our consciousnesses forward into a suspended quantum state version of ourselves that exists across every possible instance of time," Five explained.
"That makes no sense," Diego shot.
"Well, it would if you were smarter," Five shot back instantly.
"Five," the girl chided him in a warning tone as Diego sprang to his feet, though Luther held his arm out to block Diego.
"How long were you there?" Luther wanted to know.
"Forty-five years. Give or take," Five glanced at the girl and she nodded.
"So what are you saying? That you're both 58?" Luther continued.
Five eyed him. "No, our consciousnesses are 58. Apparently, our bodies are now 13 again."
"Wait, how does that even work?" Allison was confused.
"Rina kept saying the equations were off," Five handed her a sandwich. She thanked him softly. "Eh. Bet you're laughing now," he remarked.
"Rina?" Vanya echoed in confusion.
"Hmm. Guess I missed the funeral," Five picked up a newspaper, missing Vanya's question completely.
"How'd you know about that?" Luther looked at him.
"What part of the future do you not understand?" Five scoffed. "Heart failure, huh?"
"Yeah. No," Luther and Diego answered in unison.
"Hmmm," Five clicked his tongue. "Nice to see nothing's changed." He began to walk away with a sandwich in his hand.
"Uh, that's it? That's all you have to say?" Allison called after him.
"What else is there to say? The circle of life," Five left the room.
The siblings turned to the girl now.
"Okay. Who are you?" Diego crossed his arms.
"Um…I'm Karina Hargreeves," she replied nervously, slowly getting to her feet.
"Hargreeves?" they all echoed.
Five blinked into the room and to her rescue. "Karina, meet the Umbrella Academy. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, and Vanya? Meet my wife: Karina."
"WIFE?!" they all shrieked.
"You're thirteen!" Allison cried.
"No we're not!" Five remarked.
With that, he blinked out of the room with Karina before his siblings could interrogate the two any more.
"Your siblings seem like something," Karina commented after he blinked the two into his bedroom.
"That's one way to put it," Five shifted around in his closet to find something new to wear that wasn't the suit three times his size. "Ah, shit." He pulled out an Academy uniform. He looked over at her. "You can probably just borrow something from Allison."
Karina looked down at her clothes that surprisingly weren't overly large for her body. Just a bit baggy. "No. I'll be fine."
Five just nodded before she stepped out to let him change. A few minutes later the door swung open.
"You know, our rings are probably a bit too big," he commented as he came out.
"I don't think I have an extra chain for you," Karina bit her lip.
Five paused for a moment, suddenly blinking out. She waited for him and after about five or ten minutes, he reappeared.
"Problem solved. Allison let me have them," he handed a chain to her.
They slid their rings onto the chains and slipped the necklaces on. They tucked the rings beneath their shirts.
And with that, Five blinked them downstairs to go to the funeral. Along the way, he stared up at the portrait of himself hanging above the fireplace. Karina just stood next to him before Vanya joined the room.
"Nice to know Dad didn't forget me," he commented, turning to his sister. "We read your book, by the way. Found it in a library that was still standing."
"I thought it was pretty good, all things considered," Karina added quietly.
"Yeah, definitely ballsy, giving up the family secrets. Sure that went over well," Five continued.
Vanya was looking down. "They hate me."
"Oh, there are worse things that can happen," Five pointed out.
"You mean like what happened to Ben?" Vanya eyed him.
"Was it bad?" Five wanted to know.
She nodded sadly and he was grief stricken. Karina gazed at them sadly before he glanced at her and shifted over, gently tucking her hand into the crook of his arm to guide her out into the courtyard.
His siblings, Pogo, and Grace filed out into the rainy courtyard. Karina was between Klaus and Five, with Five sharing an umbrella with her.
"Did something happen?" Grace looked around confusedly, causing everyone to glance at her in concern.
"Dad died. Remember?" Allison frowned.
"Oh. Yes, of course."
"Is Mom okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, she's fine. She just needs to rest. You know, recharge," Diego assured.
"Whenever you're ready, dear boy," Pogo told Luther, who had the urn with Sir Reginald's ashes.
Luther dumped the ashes and tried to sprinkle them around. "Probably would have been better with some wind."
"Does anyone wish to speak?" Pogo inquired, though he was met with silence. "Very well. In all regards, Sir Reginald Hargreeves made me what I am today. For that alone, I shall forever be in his debt. He was my master…and my friend, and I shall miss him very much. He leaves behind a complicated legacy."
"He was a monster," Diego bitterly cut in and Klaus gave a laugh. "He was a bad person and a worse father. The world's better off without him."
"Diego," Allison warned him.
"My name is Number Two. You know why? Because our father couldn't be bothered to give us actual names. He had Mom do it."
"Would anyone like something to eat?" Grace asked.
"No, it's okay, Mom," Vanya replied.
"Oh, okay."
"Look, you wanna pay your respects? Go ahead. But at least be honest about the kind of man he was," Diego continued, stepping forward.
"You should stop talking now," Luther spoke up coldly.
Diego whipped to face him. "You know, you of all people should be on my side here, Number One."
Klaus, Five, and Karina exchanged a glance.
"I am warning you," Luther seethed.
"After everything he did to you? He had to ship you a million miles away," Diego was taunting now.
"Diego, stop talking."
"That's how much he couldn't stand the sight of you!" Diego shouted before Luther grabbed his arm and swung at him, but Diego ducked.
The brothers began to fight now. Vanya pulled an oblivious Grace back while Klaus tried to push Five and Karina back. Five swatted his hand away, though he nudged Karina behind him.
"Boys, stop this at once!" Pogo scolded loudly.
The two ignored him, punching and hitting one another.
"Come on, big boy!" Diego shot arrogantly.
"Stop it!" Vanya exclaimed.
"Hit him! Hit him!" Klaus cheered his brothers on.
Pogo sighed and scoffed, shaking his head before leaving.
"Get off me!" Luther cried. He and Diego were still fighting it out.
"We don't have time for this," Five was disgusted, taking Karina with him before the two left the "funeral".
Later on, Klaus, Five, and Karina were in the basement kitchen. Things had been slowly calming down after the funeral, but the three of them wanted to further avoid Luther and Diego at the moment.
Currently, Five was raiding the cabinets for coffee and Karina was sipping a cup of tea he brewed for her.
"Where's Vanya?" Allison suddenly came into the room.
"Oh, she's gone," Klaus answered.
"That's unfortunate," Karina took a sip of her tea. Out of all the siblings, Vanya seemed the quietest and calmest to her.
Allison nodded. "Yeah."
"An entire square block. Forty-two bedrooms, 19 bathrooms, but not a single drop of coffee," Five complained.
"Dad hated caffeine," Allison pointed out.
"Well, he hated children, too, and he had plenty of us," Klaus laughed bitterly.
"I'm taking the car," Five announced, causing Karina to eye him.
"Where are you going?" Klaus immediately sat up.
Five eyed him narrowly. "To get a decent cup of coffee."
"Do you even know how to drive?" Allison crossed her arms.
"I know how to do everything," Five boasted and then looked at Karina. "Care to join me?"
Karina sighed. "I need to get some things first. Care to drop me off at home?"
He nodded, offering his arm for her. She smiled and took it, letting him lead her out.
Klaus and Allison watched in some astonishment.
"I feel like we should try and stop them, but then again, I also just kinda want to see what happens," Klaus commented in their wake, wondering when Five got a soft side.
Five blinked out of the house and in front of another house, terrifyingly familiar to Karina.
"Are you sure you want to be here?" Five asked her in deep concern.
Karina sighed. "I'm just getting some personal items. I'll be quick. You go on and get your coffee."
"Are you sure you want me to leave?"
"Yes. Go on, I'll be fine. You'll know where to find me later on, I hope?"
"I have an inkling. You're more than welcome to stay at the mansion with us though. After all, you are family," Five returned.
"I'll think about it."
Five sighed and nodded. He gave her forehead a quick, small, but soft kiss and blinked out. Karina looked up at the house nervously, before she climbed the steps up to her first home. She let herself inside quietly. The place was dark, cold, and empty. She sighed and quickly went into her room. She packed a suitcase of clothes and personal items before she left the house, lucky that nobody was home or knew she was home.
~ * ~
Karina liked the idea staying at the luxurious Hargreeves Mansion, but she wasn't feeling up to the partial scrutiny and partial interrogations of Five's rather intimidating siblings. So instead she sought out her second, though true home: a small, cozy living space above the bookstore and next to the storage room her mother arranged in case she needed the place. Or her mother used to own. She wasn't sure if her mother was still around, to be honest.
Five was out getting his cup of coffee, so, she suspected he'd probably either stay at the mansion to sort his family out or come find her as he told her. One of the two.
It probably deemed suspicious to see a thirteen year old, out at night, letting herself into a seemingly closed bookstore. She already knew it might raise questions if she was caught. That was why she went through the back. The front was easier to access, of course, but she didn't want to draw any unwanted attention.
Karina sighed, unlocking the door (she was shocked her seemingly outdated key still worked) and slipping inside. The smell of books, leather, pages, and stories filled the air which calmed her. Though, she also caught a whiff of something else. She shook her head, heading past the shelves and up the stairs in the back. She got to the upstairs part and unlocked the door.
Five was already sitting there, drinking a cup of coffee with a book in his hand.
"Hello there…" Karina slowly greeted. "How did you find this place?"
"I remember you telling me and showing me. Well, at least what remained of it. By the way, your store door and your apartment door were unlocked," he commented nonchalantly.
Why were you even checking them in the first place? Kind of creepy she thought.
"Since when did locks keep you out?" Karina returned, slipping inside.
"Just wanted to let you know for your own safety, dear."
"You have such a strange way of showing your care sometimes," she shut the door.
"Well, to be honest, I thought you'd be at the Academy," Five watched her slide her coat and scarf off.
"I considered it. But, I didn't want to overstay my welcome after what happened," Karina hung up her purse and keys.
"I would have made sure my family left you alone."
Karina hummed lightly as she sat down on the couch. She looked at Five and her eyebrows furrowed when she saw a bloodstain on his collar. "Is that blood?" she was concerned.
"It's nothing," Five played it off casually.
"Okay, let me ask you this. Why are you here instead of with your siblings?" Karina decided not to press him.
"Did you not see the shit show of a funeral we were at earlier?"
She sighed, bothered by the sight of blood. She went over to the medical cabinet and pulled out a little kit before going back to Five. He wordlessly rolled his sleeve up, revealing the cut where he dug out his tracker. Karina grimaced when she saw the wound, removing the bloodied cloth and starting to clean/patch him up. Five silently watched her.
"Are you going to tell me what happened?" Karina asked after she was done.
"They found me. At that restaurant. They know what we did," Five answered.
She shook her head. "I had a feeling they would catch on. I just didn't expect it to be this soon."
"Did they attack you?"
"No. I'm okay."
"It won't be too long before they'll be after the both of us. You know that."
"I'm sure we can handle it together."
Five gazed into her eyes. "I have to stop the apocalypse first. The world ends in eight days, Rina."
"We have to stop it. I know I'm ordinary, but I'm still here to help," Karina retorted.
"I know. I just can't risk seeing you hurt."
"I worked at The Commission. Same as you. I don't think avoiding getting hurt is going to be as easy as your heart desires."
"I'll take my chances," Five just held up his cup and Karina gave him a look.
"Really making yourself at home, I see," she mused.
"Got anything stronger?"
"Why, you haven't already raided my liquor cabinet?" Karina lightly mocked him.
"It was the only thing in your home that was locked."
Karina rolled her eyes, going over into the kitchen. She unlocked the cabinet and pulled out a bottle of whiskey. She poured two glasses and returned to the sofa, handing Five a glass. He gave her a nod and the two downed the drinks rather quickly.
"So what happened to you?" Karina wanted to know.
"Just a shoot out. Got a bit messy, but, I removed the tracker from my arm. That was it," he explained.
"At least you were able to get out."
"I'm still surprised they haven't gone after you yet."
"Well if they do, I'll make sure to lock the doors," Karina grabbed the glasses and got up to wash them.
Five blinked in front of her, stopping her in her steps. "I have a lead. On who or what may cause the apocalypse so we can stop it."
"I thought you said you didn't know how to stop it."
"I don't. But maybe I can start with this," he held up a prosthetic eye.
"Ugh, how long have you've been carrying that thing around in your pocket?" Karina wrinkled her nose in some disgust.
"I cleaned it when we got to The Commission. I want to find the company that made the eye."
"Okay. And?"
Five sighed in very slight irritation. "I would like you to come with me."
"Oh. You could have just said that to begin with," Karina pointed out, gliding past him to the kitchen.
God help me he thought.
"I thought you would have known."
"When you use I instead of we, of course not."
Five could be stubbornly independent. Even though the two have been together for longer than their current ages, he still struggled with verbally including Karina in his plans sometimes.
"Okay, okay. We. I get it."
Karina softly smiled and pressed a gentle kiss on his cheek.
"Wait. Where are you going?" Five called after her, watching her head to the bedroom.
"It's late? I'm tired? I was going to try to get some sleep."
"Oh. I was going to pay Vanya a visit."
"You were?" Karina glanced at the clock.
"Someone needs to know why we're here."
"And you want me to go with you?"
"If you want."
"Sure. Why not. Guess I should get to know the in-laws while I have the chance."
Five nodded, taking her hand into his arm and blinking the two out of her home and into Vanya's place. He plopped down on the sofa with Karina by his side. Soon the door unlocked and Vanya slipped in. Five turned on the lamp.
"Jesus!" Vanya jumped, not expecting to see the couple in her apartment.
"You should have locks on your windows," Five casually told her and Karina gave him a look for it.
"I live on the second floor," Vanya sighed.
"Rapists can climb."
"You are so weird," Vanya voiced what Karina was thinking. "Is that blood?" Vanya then noticed the bloodstain on his collar.
"It's nothing. Rina took care of it," he replied.
"Why are you here?" Vanya wanted to know.
Five sighed. "I've decided you're the only one I can trust out of all the siblings."
"Why me?" Vanya sat down across from them.
"Because you're ordinary," Five responded almost matter-of-factly.
Vanya winced and Karina nudged his side.
"Because you'll listen," he corrected himself.
"Okay," Vanya nodded.
"When I jumped forward and got stuck in the future, do you know what I found?" Five continued.
"No."
"Nothing. Absolutely nothing. As far as I could tell, I was the last person left alive. Until Rina came around. We never figured out what killed the human race, but…we did find something else. The date it happens. The world ends in eight days, and I have no idea how to stop it," he said.
Vanya stared at them for a moment and took a deep breath. "I'll put on a pot of coffee."

It boggles my mind that people are still trying to deny that Near is trans because it wasn’t directly stated in the text. Last time I checked people don’t develop breasts randomly in their late twenties and the pronouns that people call you by don’t change for no reason.
Near has also grown their hair out to an absurd length and are wearing some feminine clothing as well as her signature white Pjs. While those two things don’t necessarily make a person trans adding these two facts to the first two I mentioned and keeping in mind that in a visual medium you’re meant to show as much as tell like manga is; that is almost an explicitly telling you What’s up people.
Characters don’t need to be explicitly said to be trans for it to be obvious that a character is in fact trans. The fact of the matter is that Near being trans was not apart of the plot of the 2019 Death Note one shot and because Near has clearly been undergoing HRT for a long time and has probably for an even longer amount of time been out it wouldn’t have been anything new to Near’s team of FBI and CIA agents who’ve been by her side for over half her life at this point. So no one would have brought it up.
This is the way representation should be. Just having it there without it being a big deal. I like the way they did this. They didn’t have a big long scene where they talked about how Trans Near was then got back to the plot. They didn’t spend forever trying to show look how progressive we are. They didn’t try to make it a sex thing. They had her just exist like any other character. Her personality hasn’t changed at all as a result of her transition either. She’s still the same toy loving super genius we’ve always loved.
The only downside to representation like this are the morons who wanna deny that its a basic fact of Death Note that Near is Trans.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. (p.s I worked really hard on the spelling and grammar, but I’m dyslexic and would appreciate any constructive criticism on how to improve, please be respectful while doing so and don’t insult my intelligence because of a learning disability. Thank you)

Best space operas to watch that aren't Firefly
So while I have made long winded rants about how much I hate Firefly with a whitehot passion to death, one might ask are there space operas that I like? Well,I have quite a few actually. Now just sit back and allow me to make four of my recommendations!
Killjoys (2015-2019)- this series is one of my favorite space operas from the mid-2010s, as it has everything about it that is modernized for the time. It has space gunslingers, queer romance(s), alien invasion, space hippies, artificial intelligence computers with a sense of humor and more! The series is a live-action Cowboy Bebop, about a trio of space bounty hunters, who go on missions concerning loot retrieval, to assassinations, and of course, hunting down bounty heads. However, the series builds up to an epic storyline that entails a showdown with an alien invasion. It's also worth noting that this was an entirely Canadian production.
Dark Matter (2015-2017)-this series is Canada's answer to Firefly (much like Killjoys, it too is an entirely Canadian production). And like Killjoys, Dark Matter is concerned with some of the same themes above, though it never quite made it to its final 2 seasons worth of storylines. Nonetheless, Dark Matter is concerned with a group of space pirates/mercenaries who wake up from suspended animation with amnesia, and are off on a mission to put down a revolt. I would say that this show is philosophical in the concept of personal identity, especially if one who loses their memories is an entirely new person, and whether or not they are to be held accountable. Also, after watching this show, I came up with three rules which I like to coin as the Space Pirate Creed: Rule #1. Kill or be Killed; Rule #2. Get rewarded for your deeds, and Rule #3. Cowards and traitors are to be shot or spaced (thrown out the airlock). Why's this important? It's the rules the characters play by of course!
Starhunter (2000-2004)-now this Canadian space opera predates Firefly by 2 years, and actually lasted for 44 episodes over 2 seasons. While not as well known today, Starhunter is notable since it has many plot-beats that are reminiscent of Firefly. For one, there is an episode about a family trying to outrun a mysterious cadre which involves a child with telepathic powers (sounds like River Tam eh?!). Other similar episodes include an abandoned space outpost, that was left deserted because of an experiment that went awry, and gave a teen girl powers (similar to River once again). Now what makes Starhunter different from Firefly is that, it's set in a semi-realistic environment, in which space travel is limited to our solar system, spaceships are like cars that can travel between planets in a matter of days, and that it's mainly about space bounty hunters like Killjoys. Although, the plot is more about a group of space bounty hunters who are used as unwitting pawns for a shady corporate entity that seeks bounty heads who have telepathic powers.
Lexx (1996-2002)- A parody of Star Trek, Blake's 7, Space: 1999, and Space Patrol, Lexx is a Canadian space opera about a group of fugitives who hijack a dragonfly-shaped, semi-organic warship from a space dictator with the ability to reincarnate himself. The show ran for 4 seasons, and started off for the first 2 seasons in standard space opera fare with traveling to distant planets and cultures, and in the end the characters use the titular Lexx to blow-up the planet. Although, the last two seasons are a mixed bag. Most of its humor though, is derived from toilet humor and sexuality. However I do have to concede that some of its humor and situation are horribly dated which are transphobic and homophobic by today's standards as a warning. One of the highlights of the series would be how in season 2 when the show parodied slasher films! It's humor is not for everyone, though I do recommend watching it for how it does make fun of the space operas listed above!
And that's it for now!
