Ok i was looking through the coloured death note version and I think we have to include mello in the can´t-sit-normally-conversation too – not just L and near, because (a) he can´t seem to sit still – he is constantly adjusting his seating position sometimes from panel to panel (while the other mafia guys just sit there with both feet on the floor) and (b) he never has both feet on the floor while sitting. Most of the time they are up on the couch table, or he has at least one leg up on the couch/table he is sitting on. The most usual version is him sitting with his legs crossed – i´m assuming because there is no couch table available at that moment. Anyway, my conclusion, mello can´t sit normal either, he has just found ways to do it that make him look cool instead of weird

About a month ago, you made a post asking(?) the original japanese for Mello's answer on Ryuk's journal, and i've made it my life's mission to find it. After hours of googling random words in japanese, i didn't find an actual screenshot, but i did atleast find the text.

......i found this on a random japanese thread from 2006 discussing whether Near and Mello were gay or not btw. Needless to say, it's 2 am and my hyperfixation on these guys is going to kill me.

ANON!!! I am, for starters, SO grateful that you did all this digging for my sake, and second of all very impressed by your dedication!! I have a feeling that the post in question originally came from an ask sent by @asmilethatshines, and I definitely spent a solid 20 minutes digging for an answer myself before I gave up and sent the request out into the broader fandom. Suffice to say, I very much admire your commitment to the cause (not to mention that I’m also really excited to have an answer to this!! It seems to me that English is one of the only translations that didn’t include “being mean to get the attention of the person he likes” or something to that effect, so I would say it’s pretty much confirmed that this was the original meaning behind the line).

Also the ending of this ask got an audible laugh out of me 😭 I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve spent hours upon hours scouring the manga for one minor detail and ended up plunging into an existential crisis. The 2003 yaoi hyperfixation is REAL and it is a powerful force 😔🤝

morgan's quick and messy "timeskip timeline" notes

hello! providing my very off the cuff notes for what we know about the things Mello and Near got up to during the time between L's death and when we see them again in canon. one day i will do a more thorough timeline covering the second arc in detail but for now i want to focus just on the timeskip :3

please note that i think it is great to play with the timeline and i vigorously support canon divergence. including just straightup ignoring the timeline. do whatever you want forever.

In December 2004, Mello and Near learn of L's death. Mello runs away from Wammy's and strikes out on his own.

From this point until March 2009, Near is working on his own [the FBI director tells the president this in the manga during Near's meeting w/ the president that precedes the formation of the SPK]. We aren't given any clues as to where this work was taking place; my assumption has always been that he was doing this at Wammy's since no governmental agencies are implied to be involved in his work until March 2009 [though presumably he's in contact with the FBI a little earlier than this to set up the meeting that precedes the formation of the SPK]. Light has taken the official role of L, so there's no way for anyone outside of Wammy's to know that Near is [as the FBI director puts it] "L's true successor."

On Mello's side, we have no specifics on what he's up to from December 2004 to approximately April 2008. Rod says in the manga that Mello has been with them for a year and a half; he says this in October 2009, so that makes April 2008 roughly when Mello succeeded in joining Rod's gang [by "bringing in the head of a rival mob boss even Kira couldn't kill" or something to that effect]. The only other thing we really know Mello does in between December 2004 and October 2009 [when he has the NPA director kidnapped] is that he gets in contact with Ill Ratt [lmao] shortly after the formation of the SPK, and has Ratt acting as his spy within the SPK to feed him information about Near's progress. Matt doesn't begin to work with Mello until November 2009.

there's a chance i'm missing something here because again these are Quick And Messy notes but !! there is my rapidfire overview of the canon info on the matter. i have my own thoughts / headcanons on the specifics, but that is not within the scope of this post so i will save that for another day :3

SO anon in the time that you have sent this, while holding the hand of tumblr user @neallo i have moved from 'haha wouldn't it be funny if light and matt were friends' to 'they should get married for real.' here is my pitch: this would be The Death Note Fluff Ship of all time. also, and i am so serious about this, it would fix light.

ok so. in most ships, the other partner relates to light on the basis of his brilliance and neuroticism. they see beneath his mask and find something a little cruel and they love him for it. however!! this is not the only side to light. he is also just some guy with very regular interests. he loves consommé chips and video games and MMA. he apparently watches enough television to record a whole shelf of VCRs. he may or may not have been involved in some minor delinquency. (at minimum, his friends don't think he'll be bothered by their own.)

i think light hides these things just as much as he hides all of his cruelty and fear, because before he was a serial killer he was invested in being a serious, straight-a model teenager.

matt would love these things. we know like seven things about matt but literally all of them suggest that their interests would align perfectly. matt is also brilliant, which is a quality light likes, and i think he'd really like meeting someone who is both extremely competent in the way he values and entirely unashamed of playing gameboy all day. also, we can see from the way he interacts with mello that matt absolutely knows how to handle people who are a bit volatile. he seems to let it happen without responding either positively or negatively, and i think that's basically the one and only thing you could do to wind light down.

idk!! i think they'd get along for real, romantically or otherwise. i think they'd like sitting in the couch together, drinking soda and trading off the controller for a one-person game. this would of course have to be an au for the obvious reason (dead) but i think it would actually be great.

would you ever consider writing for a different ship?

thanks for the ask!! technically speaking i already have - i have an anonymously posted fic featuring natebit in addition to meronia - but in terms of ships that don't involve mello and near, it really just depends. the thing about meronia that made me want to write for it in the first place is the fact that i feel like there's so much untapped potential for it in canon. i am very compelled by the musical version of remisa, for example, but i really enjoy the way it's done in canon, and i don't feel there's any particular value that i can add by writing for it. with meronia, on the other hand, i feel there's a lot i can do that expands on their existing dynamic.

the other ships in death note that appeal to me in that way are mikavanni and ide/aizawa. both of those, in my opinion, would be viable within the canon timeline. the problem really is just that i find the ships to be more compelling than the characters themselves. i absolutely adore mello and near independently, so it's a lot more enjoyable for me to write their perspectives and dwell on their thoughts & feelings. ide and aizawa in particular are just not high on my list of fun characters to write or think about. i'd be a little more open to a mikavanni fic so that could be on the horizon eventually, but it won't be anytime soon.

the only rarepair that i have actually made an earnest attempt at is matt/light, which i'm sure is incredibly niche but it was this post that got me thinking about it (which i am just now realising that i haven't actually interacted with at all????? i will be remedying that IMMEDIATELY after i'm done with this ask). the ship evidently does not make a whole lot of sense in canon, but i'm fascinated by the premise of it and if i can get the hang of writing light, i would love to have at least one AU for them finished at some point.

anyway!! apologies for the insanely long response, but i hope this answers your question well enough :-)

near is internally mortified but delivers a long and outwardly calm monologue about shipping culture and how it's not worth becoming upset over or even giving a second thought to, because the internet will ship any two public figures who are vaguely associated with each other and thus the existence of the ship should not be interpreted as any genuine commentary on their compatibility but rather an inevitable product of their presence in the public eye, and the only means mello has of shutting him up is to kiss him

I think the concept of fictional characters breaking the fourth wall to find out about their own ships is always funny, but I need you to imagine lawlight learning about lawlight for a second. Light's face goes completely blank save for a violent eye twitch while he internally cycles through all five stages of grief and at least 10 emotions not yet recognised by the field of psychology within a matter of seconds, after which he plasters on a very strained polite smile and asks what "law" stands for in the most fake saccharine voice you've ever heard. L tries to murder Light with his bare hands. Light decks L in the face while getting choked out and weasels away, politely excusing himself for a minute, then L drops dead immediately after. Love loses, roll credits
