as much as i find the Mello-Matt friendship dynamic charming, i think the Near-Matt friendship dynamic is CRIMINALLY underexplored, and may i also say i think the Matt-L dynamic could be really fun as well. there is an AU that exists just in my brain in which Near, Mello, and Matt all work for L, and for the sake of efficiency / practicality / safety, they live in some weird headquarters kind of building like the setup in arc 1. in this hypothetical AU Matt and L are smoking weed and playing Wii tennis while Near and Mello are off playing five-dimensional psychosexual chess [or, rather, Mello is playing five-dimensional psychosexual chess, and Near thinks he is doing SO good at flirting.]

I've only ever read it in one AU fic before, and it wasn't really for me! I just don't get the feeling there's a ton of interesting stuff to work with by putting these two together, either narratively or personality-wise? But I don't get the no feeling from it or anything
