Boston Herald columnist suspended after Tom Brady agent hoax SOMETIMES a source is just too good to be true. Boston Herald columnist Ron Borges landed what he thought was a major scoop last week: Tom Brady’s agent texted him to say the New England Patriots quarterback wanted a new contract in light of former back-up Jimmy Garoppolo signing a $177 million mega-deal with the 49ers, and the five-time Super Bowl champion was willing to sit out off-season team activities until he got it.

WEEI removes audio of host Christian Fauria doing racist Asian impression for Tom Brady’s agent
WEEI in Boston has removed audio of one of their hosts doing a racist Asian impression of Don Yee, the agent for Tom Brady.
Christian Fauria, a former tight end with the Patriots, is a co-host on “Ordway, Merloni & Fauria” on WEEI. He got into some hot water Friday for a racist segment he did. The trio did a skit where they reenacted how they envisioned the prank going down that led to the Boston Herald writing a false story about Tom Brady threatening to hold out.
Fauria decided to take the role of Yee for the skit, and he used a racist/stereotypical Asian voice and tones when playing the role of the agent (audio can be heard at Deadspin). The show also included some bamboo flute music in the background while doing the skit.
WEEI initially promoted the audio on their Twitter account, even calling it “fake Don Yee.”
AUDIO: OMF – Lou and Christian read texts between Ron Borges and fake Don Yee, 2-9-18 https://t.co/74atpfZB3Q pic.twitter.com/61ch5b6kjJ
— WEEI (@WEEI) February 9, 2018
The link used to direct listeners to the audio, but that page has been removed by the company. A visit to the page says “The requested page “/file/392251″ could not be found.”
The audio is pretty despicable, and it’s a wonder they even promoted it in the first place before realizing they should remove it.

Boston Herald Runs Ron Borges's Tom Brady Hoax Story
Boston Herald Runs Ron Borges's Tom Brady Hoax Story #Patriots
Thursday night Boston Herald reporter Ron Borges penned a story with this headline “Tom Brady wants to get paid like Jimmy G, or he’ll skip OTAs”. A headline and a story that was uncovered as a hoax on Friday. The Kirk and Callahan show on WEEI revealed that one of their texters pretended to be Tom Brady’s agent Don Yee when texting Borges. Jimmy Garoppolo signed a lucrative new contract Thursday with the San Francisco 49ers. Now, his former teammate reportedly wants one of his own.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is seeking a deal comparable to that of his former backup and is prepared to skip the team’s voluntary offseason practices if he doesn’t receive one, Ron Borges of the Boston Herald reported Thursday night.
“According to sources close to the league’s Most Valuable Player,” Borges wrote, “Brady is ready to sit out all of this year’s offseason organized team activities unless he receives a contract extension that carries with it up-front money similar to what his former protege, Jimmy Garoppolo, will receive from the San Francisco 49ers.”
Garoppolo, whom the Patriots traded to the 49ers in October, now is the owner of the richest contract in NFL history: five years, $137.5 million. Brady, meanwhile, has two years remaining on his current deal. He’s set to make $14 million in base salary in 2018 and again in 2019.
“Brady is hopeful this will not become a public battle where he is forced to stay away from OTAs for the first time in his career to be paid what he’s earned and fully deserves,” Borges wrote. “But he has always been a master of leverage, as fretting defensive coordinators in the NFL have learned the hard way the past 18 years.”
Borges also reported that Brady, who won his third NFL MVP award this season at age 40, was instrumental in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ decision earlier this week to spurn the Indianapolis Colts and remain with the Patriots. Brady, per Borges’ sources, insisted McDaniels “be retained as head-coach-in-waiting” behind Bill Belichick.
Brady and McDaniels have known each other since 2001 and began directly working together in 2004, when McDaniels was promoted to quarterbacks coach. Their close relationship recently was featured in an episode of Brady’s documentary series, “Tom vs. Time.”
UPDATE (11:36 p.m. ET): Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston and NESN’s Doug Kyed disputed Borges’ report.
I was told that @RonBorges report Brady would skip OTAs unless he got paid like Jimmy G. is "off the reservation." https://t.co/Fc3b43Gg3V

April 5, 2017
After much speculation and uncertainty, the rematch between Andre Ward (31-0, 15 KOs) and Sergey Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs) has been signed, sealed, and delivered. The fight will take place on June 17th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The venue is smaller than the T-Mobile Center that held the first match last November. Big fights such as the Oscar De La Hoya-Felix Trinidad welterweight unification bout took place at the Mandalay Bay.
As soon as the scorecards were read awarding Ward the controversial unanimous decision the only thought on the minds of boxing fans was when the rematch would be taking place. The scores highlighted how controversial the fight was as Kovalev lost only by one point on each of the judge's scorecards after having scored a knockdown and seemingly dominating the first half of the match. Afterward, Ward spoke to some publications about the thought of retiring and leaving boxing altogether. Now that the rematch has been officially announced the full attention can be put on what will happen inside the ring rather than outside the ropes.
The first fight between Kovalev and Ward highlighted the large division between boxing fans that has a strong racial component. Art imitates life, and in America, race and racism have always divided people. Maybe more so with a lack of discussion and understanding having caused more derision. Regardless, lines have been drawn within the Kovalev-Ward fight. This has brought fans to create correlations between how one scores a fight and their race and political values.
In this era, one does not need to be able to write an article to cover a sport. All you need is a social media account on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, or Twitter. Anyone can cover the sport that has an agenda against certain fighters or fans of certain fighters. Racism takes place on the front stage and the backstage. The Internet has allowed many to express their often racist opinions publicly while hiding behind a screen name or Twitter handle.  This has led to more hatred being spewed between fans.
This hatred between boxing fans has stemmed over to the fighters themselves. No one would have considered Kovalev and Ward friends before their first fight, but there seemed to be a mutual respect between the two. The rematch will be different; the level of respect has gone down the drain. Both men have gone to social media expressing their thoughts on the match. Many may remember that Ward as the challenger had the higher purse in the first fight. Now that Ward is going into the fight as the champion the difference in purses may be greater than the first time.
For Kovalev, this was inconsequential as the important aspect was to get the fight signed so he can get Ward back in the ring. The Russian was never known as a nice fighter before facing Ward and now with the added motivation to win back his titles against a man he doesn’t particularly care for makes him dangerous. Going into the rematch, with Kovalev the 2004 Olympic gold-medalist could be the underdog for the first time since facing Mikkel Kessler (46-3, 35 KOs) in 2009. There was a perception that Ward was the better boxer between the two but through long stretches of the first fight, Kovalev was able to out jab Ward. Ward isn’t the bigger puncher, and Kovalev could equal him in boxing ability.
The build-up and the press conferences for the rematch should be interesting. The tension between the two camps could be as high as boxing fans have seen in quite a while. The first fight showed how hatred could spill over to fans and the fighters themselves. Without a clear winner in the rematch, hate will be stronger than love when it comes to Kovalev, Ward, and boxing fans.
Below is a look at a tally of boxing media that scored the first Kovalev-Ward fight.

Ron Borges’ fake Tom Brady holdout story went to print, made front page
Longtime Boston Herald reporter Ron Borges was catfished by a fan who posed as Tom Brady’s agent on Thursday night, and the result was a bombshell story that claimed Brady is planning to hold out for more money this offseason. The story has since been pulled from the internet, but we have some unfortunate news.
It made it to print.

For those of you who haven’t heard the backstory, it is truly surreal. A Patriots fan named “Nick in Boston” called into WEEI’s “Kirk & Callahan Show” on Friday morning to explain how he pulled off the prank. It started when someone tweeted out Borges’ phone number, so Nick texted the reporter and pretended he was Brady’s agent, Don Yee. The prankster was then able to convince Borges that Brady plans to hold out for a new contract because he’s angry over how much money Jimmy Garoppolo got paid with the 49ers.
Borges’ column claimed he had multiple “sources,” but the text messages Nick shared make it seem like he was the only source.
Obviously, this is as bad of a look as it gets for Borges. He didn’t find a way to confirm that he was actually speaking with Yee nor did he use common sense, as Brady has always taken less money to allow the Patriots to build contending teams. But apparently Borges didn’t go above an editor’s head and publish the story on his own, otherwise it never would have made it to print.

Fan posed as Tom Brady’s agent, tricked reporter into thinking QB will hold out
A local reporter in Boston thought he had enough information to break one of the biggest stories of the NFL offseason on Thursday night, but he has been left with his face completely covered in egg after he was duped by a prankster.
Late Thursday evening, longtime Boston Herald reporter Ron Borges dropped a bombshell story citing sources who informed him that Tom Brady is so angry about Jimmy Garoppolo’s massive contract extension with the 49ers that the Patriots quarterback is planning to hold out until he gets paid more. The report was quickly refuted by Tom E. Curran, who confidently labeled it “off the reservation.”
I was told that @RonBorges report Brady would skip OTAs unless he got paid like Jimmy G. is "off the reservation." https://t.co/Fc3b43Gg3V
— Tom E. Curran (@tomecurran) February 9, 2018
Here’s a screenshot of what the column looked like:
Here's the @bostonherald column @RonBorges wrote that @KirkAndCallahan say was based only on some random guy texting Borges pretending to be Don Yee, Tom Brady's agent. pic.twitter.com/7YuI3MOx4U
— Hilary Sargent (@lilsarg) February 9, 2018
The story was eventually taken down, and neither the Herald nor Borges had addressed it as of Friday morning. Now we know why.
A man who revealed himself as “Nick in Boston” called into WEEI on Friday and explained how he catfished Borges into thinking he was Brady’s agent, Don Yee. The caller explained that someone had tweeted out Borges’ phone number, so he decided to play a prank on Borges by reaching out to him and posing as Yee. Nick shared the surreal text messages that explain how the whole thing went down:
Goodbye @RonBorges. pic.twitter.com/4h7bdRpTdq
— Kirk & Callahan (@KirkAndCallahan) February 9, 2018
It gets worse. Borges did the responsible thing by trying to call “Yee” on the phone to get more of the story. The prankster wasn’t going to answer at first, but he eventually decided to pick up the phone and assumed Borges would realize at that point that he had been duped. He still didn’t.
“Somebody tweeted Ron Borges’ phone number and I just picked it up and for some reason I just thought, ‘Hey, I’ll text him and say I’m Don Yee.’ And he just went with it for some reason,” Nick in Boston told WEEI, as transcribed by Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “Here’s the funny part. Well, it’s all funny but here’s the funnier part: He tried to call me three times and I just didn’t answer. But then I was just like, whatever, screw it, I’ll just call him and he’s gonna know it’s not Don Yee. But I called him and I was just like, ‘Hey, Ronnie, it’s Don.’”
Dear Lord.
While you have to feel sorry for Borges for getting played that hard, a little common sense could have gone a long way in this instance. Borges has been around the team long enough to know that Brady is constantly taking less money so the Patriots can build contending teams. He also doesn’t seem like the type of guy to hold out, and he certainly wouldn’t be the type of guy to have his agent put the word out to the press in February — just days after the Super Bowl.
We know that there has been a lot more drama than usual going on with the Patriots, and Brady hinted that he may be unhappy with Bill Belichick with some of his social media activity this week. Still, Borges should have known that the story was so outlandish that he needed to do a much better job of confirming that he was actually speaking to Yee. Those are the types of mistakes that a journalist may never recover from.

Hall of Fame voter cites dropped passes as reason for Terrell Owens’ exclusion
Terrell Owens has been lambasting the media after he failed to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame this time around, and one voter has seen fit to respond.
Ron Borges of the Boston Herald penned a column criticizing Owens’s supporters and offering a few rebuttals as to why the wide receiver was not elected.
Borges argued that players such as Michael Irvin, Cris Carter, and Art Monk were made to wait longer than Owens has to be elected to the Hall of Fame. In addition, he cited the fact that Owens once led the NFL in dropped passes and finished in the top four seven other times.
It should be noted that drops aren’t an officially tracked NFL statistic, and it could be argued that if you’re dropping that many passes, you must be doing something right to get that many chances to catch them.
Owens has a Hall of Fame resume, but has been dogged by character questions, which he’s addressed with some of the media. Calling him out for drops just seems silly.
